Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini scroll everyone, and welcome back to my
- 0:22glitter Smokey eye. I did this makeup look like 2
- 0:26days ago and so many of you guys were like, that is a sleigh eye
- 0:31look. Please bring it back.
- 0:33So I did and actually 2 days ago, the reason why I had that
- 0:37like different type of makeup. I didn't even have a wing.
- 0:39I didn't even have a wing. I never have no wing.
- 0:44That is like the wing is my safety net.
- 0:46That is like one of my most millennial qualities is that I
- 0:50always have to have a wing. I have literally been doing a
- 0:53liquid wing, like a liquid eyeliner wing on my eyes every
- 0:57single day since I was like 15. But the reason why I didn't have
- 1:001-2 days ago and why I don't have 1 today is because I was
- 1:04copying that like viral Mary Kate and Ashley makeup look
- 1:08that's everywhere on TikTok right now.
- 1:09I think it was from a New York minute premiere.
- 1:12They're like 17. Like they're so young.
- 1:15They look so good, but it's like very fresh faced nude, glossy
- 1:20lip. And then their eyes just have
- 1:22like, the most amount of like, glitter, smoky with some thick
- 1:26mascara. So I was copying that makeup
- 1:28look, and I really love it, especially for the holidays.
- 1:30Anyways, let's get into the stories for today.
- 1:34That's enough talking about my makeup.
- 1:35So the first right that I have for you guys is that Sabrina
- 1:37Carpenter and Barry Keegan have reportedly broken up.
- 1:42OK, so this couple was together for about a year.
- 1:46They were first LinkedIn December 2023.
- 1:49And after months of rumors about them possibly being together,
- 1:54they kind of confirmed something was going on between the two of
- 1:57them when they took photos together at the Met Gala.
- 2:00They didn't attend together and they walked the red carpet
- 2:03separately, but they took a lot of photos that gave couple.
- 2:07And then one month later in June, he starred as her love
- 2:10interest in Please, Please, Please her music video.
- 2:13So that was another like, OK, something's probably going on.
- 2:17And yeah, like, they have been very low key.
- 2:19It seems like they've been on and off this whole year.
- 2:23You know, she did sing about him at one of her, I think it was
- 2:25her LA concert. She like, swapped out one of her
- 2:28lyrics and put his name in it when he was at the concert.
- 2:31So they seemed to be still kind of something.
- 2:34However, a source did tell Us Weekly that they took a break a
- 2:37few months ago. However, this reported split
- 2:40from this morning is like a new split and a recent 1.
- 2:44And I think if the tabloids like People and Us Weekly and stuff
- 2:47are talking about it now, like covering it, like sources,
- 2:50quote, UN quote are claiming that it's true and they're
- 2:53covering this as, you know, alleged fact, then I think it's
- 2:57very clear that this is probably done.
- 3:00I need to know, does anyone else feel like they were just not a
- 3:02real couple? There is just something about
- 3:04them I just never believed. I do not believe that they were
- 3:08actually in a relationship. I know she sang about him a lot
- 3:12on Short and Sweet, like her album, but I don't know,
- 3:15something about their relationship just felt so like
- 3:18fabricated PR vibes to me. And I have a very hard time
- 3:23believing that they were actually ever in a relationship.
- 3:25OK, the next story that I have for you guys, I got this story
- 3:29from LinkedIn, which is so cursed.
- 3:33LinkedIn. I actually said this a few weeks
- 3:35ago. I think it was on the pod.
- 3:37But like LinkedIn is becoming more and more like a news media
- 3:43site, like a news media platform the same way that like TikTok,
- 3:47Instagram, you know, all of these social media platforms
- 3:50eventually turn into kind of like entertainment or news
- 3:52sites. Like that is like the direction
- 3:55that LinkedIn is going in unfortunately.
- 3:57Well, or maybe unfortunately, I don't know, LinkedIn is so
- 3:59cursed. But this is really funny and I'm
- 4:03glad that I saw it on LinkedIn. So away.
- 4:07The luggage brand has partnered with a bunch of the winners of
- 4:11the big celebrity look alike competitions in the US that have
- 4:14been going viral everywhere. And they've partnered with them
- 4:17as like, influencers, like in a latest influencer campaign.
- 4:21So they've tapped the winner of the Jeremy Allen White
- 4:24competition. And in his imagery, he's
- 4:27standing in front of a Mr. Beef restaurant holding the luggage.
- 4:31They got the Timothy Chalamet competition winner, and he's
- 4:33wearing a Wonka costume holding the luggage.
- 4:36And then they got the Dev Patel competition winner, and he's
- 4:39sitting at an airport gate with the luggage.
- 4:41And then the slogan of the campaign is even look, alikes
- 4:44travel with the real thing. I think this is the perfect
- 4:49example of what I talk about all the time with our clients,
- 4:52whether it's like brands that we're working with in
- 4:54advertising or like consulting, whatever it is, there is no way
- 4:58to tap into youth culture unless you have someone who is on your
- 5:02team who is like working in marketing or social, who is
- 5:06chronically online and like understands the minute to minute
- 5:10updates of the cultural zeitgeist.
- 5:12Like specifically online, because these look alike
- 5:15competitions. I bet you if I asked like half
- 5:17of my friends, probably even more than half of my friends,
- 5:20because a lot of my friends are in like finance, tech law, you
- 5:24know, like very offline, very like quote UN quote, like
- 5:27serious, like adults, you know, like industries and big girl
- 5:32jobs. They would probably have no idea
- 5:35what I was talking about If I said, have you heard of the
- 5:38viral celebrity look like competitions going on
- 5:40everywhere? So this is like the perfect
- 5:43example that away. Obviously, I mean, always,
- 5:46always been really good at this stuff, but this is specifically
- 5:50like so online and it is so of the now, right?
- 5:53Like this is something that is happening over the just like the
- 5:56last few weeks and it's going to stop happening, right?
- 5:59Like these are going to kind of come in and out.
- 6:01Like it's it's a trend that's happening right now.
- 6:03This is such an incredibly niche partnership.
- 6:07It's obviously a little bit cheesy, but it shows that they
- 6:10are super tapped into youth culture.
- 6:12They're going after that Gen. Z dollar and it shows obviously
- 6:17that they're like willing to have fun.
- 6:19They're not going to take themselves too seriously.
- 6:22I love this, OK? And the last word that I have
- 6:26for you guys. So the Raise Your Weapon
- 6:29vocalist is calling out Dead Mouse on TikTok for erasing her
- 6:34role in the iconic song. This is giving millennial.
- 6:39But I haven't seen anyone else report on this yet.
- 6:42And I think it's about to get a little bit bigger.
- 6:45I think it's like starting to gain some traction.
- 6:48So I wanted to chat with you guys about it, tell you what's
- 6:51happening and get your perspective because this is a
- 6:53really interesting story. And I don't have a lot of like
- 6:55music industry experience. Well, I don't I don't actually
- 6:58have any. But Alex, who does all of our
- 7:00partnerships at Centennial, she actually was a music industry
- 7:03girly for like 5 or 6 years before working for us.
- 7:08So I was asking her opinion on it.
- 7:10And there are just like divided opinions.
- 7:13So I just want to hear from you guys.
- 7:14OK, so artist Gretis Fabo Beck has taken to TikTok to try and
- 7:18basically like take back her voice.
- 7:20She's saying she claims that Dead Mouse has been touring with
- 7:23other women who are lip syncing over her vocals or to her vocals
- 7:28during live performances like tours and concerts.
- 7:31And these women have been basically getting the credit for
- 7:35her vocals. The song is, as I mentioned
- 7:37before, it's Raise Your Weapon, which is obviously like such an
- 7:40iconic dead mouse song. It was released in 2010.
- 7:44It has 77 million views on YouTube alone.
- 7:47I don't know what the streaming data is.
- 7:49It's one of his signature songs. And it's a song that I think a
- 7:52lot of people that really love the artist and love EDM music.
- 7:56I, I was seeing a lot of people talk about how this song has
- 7:58like helped them through hard times.
- 8:00It's, it's just like, it's a really powerful song.
- 8:03So I think it's either currently right now or just happened, but
- 8:08Dead Mouse is or was touring with Canadian artist Lights.
- 8:12And so Lights I guess is the most recent woman to like lip
- 8:15sync over Greta's vocals. Fun fact, I actually loved
- 8:19Lights back in the day as a Canadian girlie myself.
- 8:22She was like one of my favorite artists for like a period of
- 8:26time in high school and I was so obsessed with her aesthetic and
- 8:29her look and I was desperate to look like her to like have her
- 8:33entire vibe. So I actually bought, I think I
- 8:36was maybe in like grade 9 or 10. I bought like real.
- 8:39So I had black hair. I went through many phases.
- 8:42I had jet black hair. I would just like box dye my
- 8:44hair black. And I had purchased like super
- 8:48long thick extensions, like black clip in extensions that I
- 8:52would use. And then of course, I would have
- 8:53the huge like emo millennial bang.
- 8:55That's exactly what Lights's hair looked like back then.
- 8:58I was obsessed with Jessica Simpson in that way.
- 9:00And I always tried to like look like her and be like her.
- 9:02And then I moved on, I guess, to Lights, and I feel like they are
- 9:05incredibly different aesthetics. But that sums up my high school
- 9:09experience. OK, so here's what Greta had to
- 9:12say. I.
- 9:12Get tagged in lots of posts from dead masters.
- 9:16In the videos it is my voice but another singer is miming.
- 9:20If she's not miming, her voice is so low in the mix you can
- 9:24only hear me. Seeing these videos made me
- 9:26realize as a singer my voice and my identity are intertwined.
- 9:32It's one thing not giving credit, but when someone else is
- 9:36actively taking credit for your voice, it's like they're taking
- 9:40a part of your body and saying it's ferrets.
- 9:43It's intentional. It feels like an assault on my
- 9:46identity and my livelihood as a singer.
- 9:49Now, there are mixed opinions on this.
- 9:52She never said what was happening was like a breach of
- 9:55copyright or anything. So I think it's pretty clear
- 9:58that, you know, whatever is happening on this tour with Dead
- 10:01Mouse and using her vocals and people lip syncing and stuff
- 10:05like that, I don't think there's any breach of contract or
- 10:09anything illegal about that. I think she's basically just
- 10:13wanting credit. If they're going to use her
- 10:15vocals in all of these tours, she's just saying like, I want
- 10:19credit for that. And I should also note she did
- 10:21not write the song. Like she didn't write the
- 10:23lyrics. She was just the vocalist.
- 10:25So in replying to a comment asking why she's never toured
- 10:29with Dead Mouse to sing the song before herself, she wrote that
- 10:32she was not offered the opportunity.
- 10:34Quote, Nope, not once. I offered for the latest tour
- 10:38but was ignored. So for this to happen, dot dot
- 10:41dot blows my mind. So yeah, I think the weird part
- 10:44it's it's like Alex was saying it's unethical.
- 10:48Like it's surely not illegal, you know, but like it is
- 10:51unethical. Like, why would these artists
- 10:53not just saying the song live themselves?
- 10:56But yeah, I would love to hear what you guys think of this
- 10:58whole situation. I feel very bad for her.
- 11:01You know, it would be hard to see that, especially coming up
- 11:05on her for you page and things. I'm assuming that's, like where
- 11:07she's seeing this. She says she's been tagged in
- 11:09videos all the time of people, like, lip syncing over her
- 11:13vocals in these shows. And she just kind of seems like
- 11:15she just got fed up. Yeah.
- 11:16I would love to hear your perspective on this.
- 11:18And that's all for today, guys. Thank you so much for listening
- 11:21to Mini Scroll. Please rate review and
- 11:23subscribe. Please star rate US on Spotify.
- 11:26We're trying to get to 500 by the end of the year.
- 11:29I love you guys and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 11:32Bye.
