- 0:00Today.
- 0:00Let's talk about motivation.
- 0:02But not motivation.
- 0:04Like you think, because motivation to me is a buzzword.
- 0:09But it is something that I geek out about and we want to know how to motivate our teams as corporate wellness professionals.
- 0:20And it's, it's kind of an important thing, but it's tricky.
- 0:25They heard me say that before motivation is tricky.
- 0:30And today I'm going to give you ways to motivate your team.
- 0:33Especially in different stages of their life.
- 0:38As well as what.
- 0:42Is the best motivation for anybody that will last consistently.
- 0:50Yeah, that's what we're talking about today.
- 0:52You know, motivation is not just a buzzword.
- 0:55It is the key to unlocking the gold inside your team.
- 1:01But the thing is, is motivation is a word that's thrown around like confetti.
- 1:09Oh, let's motivate the team.
- 1:12Let's motivate this.
- 1:14Let's get more productive.
- 1:16Let's motivate productivity.
- 1:19What that's too abstract.
- 1:21It's too.
- 1:23Difficult to figure out.
- 1:27But the thing is, is I have been a geek about motivation since college.
- 1:33And when I first was in college, I wrote a paper on the book.
- 1:38Psycho-Cybernetics I've done a video on the book as well, but Psycho-Cybernetics is all about building self-esteem and working on building motivation within you.
- 1:52And when I first read that book, which was a long time ago.
- 1:56I got insight into motivation.
- 1:59And then I became a personal trainer.
- 2:01I became a fitness instructor and.
- 2:05A good fitness instructor, a good personal trainer knows how to motivate their clients, knows how to motivate their team.
- 2:17But what kind of motivation, Kathie?
- 2:19Because that is the key.
- 2:23We want to know their intrinsic motivators.
- 2:27Intrinsic motivation comes from the inside.
- 2:30It's going to assure me that my client is going to do what I asked them when.
- 2:37I'm trying to fill, fill their plan in their fitness routine or fill their workouts.
- 2:44The way they want to.
- 2:47But if you don't know what intrinsically motivates somebody, you're not going to get the results as a personal trainer, as a coach, as a corporate wellness professional.
- 2:59And when you are working with a team, there's a lot of intricacies that go inside there.
- 3:05Let's discuss.
- 3:08You're listening to Kathie's coaching podcast.
- 3:10I'm your host, Kathie Owen.
- 3:12On this channel.
- 3:13We talk about Reality Transurfing, corporate wellness, fitness, and more.
- 3:19And today we're talking about motivation and why it is gold for you to understand what motivates your team and your corporate wellness programs.
- 3:31Research from the Harvard business review.
- 3:34Shows that employees who are intrinsically motivated are three times more engaged and perform better than those driven by external rewards.
- 3:47So I think it would be a good idea to understand what intrinsically motivates my team, but that's where the work comes in.
- 3:57And.
- 3:59Aye.
- 4:00Like I said, I've always geeked out about motivation because I found that was the key that unlocked the success.
- 4:10Seriously across the board.
- 4:12That's not chat GPT going, oh, unlock the key to success.
- 4:16That is Kathie Owen going, Hey, this is how we find success in our clients as a personal trainer and ourselves as a person who wants to be motivated to do something.
- 4:29In our teams to find what intrinsically motivates them.
- 4:35But when we're working with a team, we've got to consider several factors.
- 4:39Number one is generations.
- 4:42Each generation has different motivators.
- 4:45So we want to compile the different motivators that go with each generation.
- 4:51We interrupt this episode, because if you are looking for ways to motivate your team, sign up for our newsletter because every week I provide information on.
- 5:03Sending an email to your team on providing motivation.
- 5:07Why I say what I say and what it goes into this.
- 5:12Now my email newsletter, it consists of my clients that are personal training clients, as well as my corporate wellness professionals.
- 5:20They coincide.
- 5:22This is how they coincide because they both go together in a fun way.
- 5:28I show I share a wellness.
- 5:32Wednesday type tip.
- 5:34Share, maybe a recipe.
- 5:36I share maybe a food label thing.
- 5:38The ideas are endless.
- 5:40Anyways, be sure to go to Kathie owen.com and sign up for our newsletter today.
- 5:47Let's get back to the episode.
- 5:49We have the baby boomers.
- 5:51They were born in between 1946 and 1964.
- 5:56The baby boomers are mostly considering retirement.
- 6:01But they're still in the workforce.
- 6:03There's still plenty of them and companies that I work with.
- 6:06So, how do we motivate the baby boomers?
- 6:10This is a small population, but we still want to consider what motivates them.
- 6:15Recognition and respect is number one.
- 6:18And baby boomers actually value acknowledgement of their experience and contributions.
- 6:24They appreciate traditional rewards like promotions and titles.
- 6:32They're also motivated by job security.
- 6:35Many are nearing retirement and value stability.
- 6:41And work ethic.
- 6:42They take pride in their work and appreciate when it is recognized.
- 6:47So we'll go to gen X.
- 6:51They were born in between the years of 1964 and about 1980.
- 6:58They value work-life balance.
- 7:00They value, flexibility and the ability to balance their professional and their personal lives.
- 7:06Autonomy.
- 7:07They prefer to work independently and appreciate having control over their tasks.
- 7:15And skill development.
- 7:16Opportunities for personal growth and learning new skills.
- 7:21Are highly motivating for them.
- 7:24Highly motivating.
- 7:26Let's talk about millennials.
- 7:28They also take up a big part of the workplace population.
- 7:32Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996.
- 7:38They value purpose and meaning millennials want to feel that their work has a meaningful impact.
- 7:45They value collaboration.
- 7:47They thrive in a team environments and value, open communication.
- 7:52And continuous feedback, send regular feedback and opportunities for improvement because that is important to them.
- 8:03And then we have gen Z gen Z was born in between 1997 and 2012.
- 8:10They are the smaller population in the workplace.
- 8:15They value innovation and technology.
- 8:18This generation is motivated by cutting edge technology and innovative projects.
- 8:25They value career advancement.
- 8:27They are ambitious and seek rapid career progression and workplace culture.
- 8:34A positive, inclusive and socially responsible workplace is crucial.
- 8:40Why did I discuss the different populations as you can see, there's a wide variety of motivators and we want to include everyone.
- 8:50We want to have a diversity of things in our culture that aspires to each generations motivators.
- 9:01One of the ways that I work with companies is I will do assessments and I will see what motivates the team.
- 9:08What's the biggest motivator, but I include each of these values.
- 9:14And each of these generations.
- 9:16What motivates them, because we want to know what the biggest motivator is.
- 9:21There are commonalities and there's also things that are not common.
- 9:26And we want to find what's the biggest motivator.
- 9:29Because if we provide that for them, they're going to be more productive and there are consequences for not motivating your team.
- 9:40And you want to know that that's why these assessments are so important.
- 9:44These assessments provide you with valuable ideas and tools and you have to be consistent.
- 9:50You'll hear me say that word all the time.
- 9:52Be consistent.
- 9:55Because consistent behaviors is what's going to send you to the next.
- 10:00Level and be able to motivate your team in a way that actually motivates them, not what you think motivates them, because your program is not going to work unless you realize what motivates them.
- 10:16So there are some consequences.
- 10:18For motivating your team.
- 10:21Let's talk about those.
- 10:22Unmotivated employees can significantly harm a business.
- 10:30I've seen this happen so many times and it has to do with change management a lot.
- 10:37But if you do not motivate your employees properly.
- 10:41What's going to happen is your employees are going to tell you how to run your business, as opposed to you telling them how they're going to run your business.
- 10:55And it's a tricky thing just like motivation.
- 10:58It's a very tricky thing.
- 10:59But let's discuss some of the consequences that happen when you don't motivate your team properly.
- 11:07You have decreased productivity.
- 11:09Lack of motivation leads to lower efficiency and output.
- 11:13Just like I just said it, they go into places where they just don't.
- 11:19Care.
- 11:20They're not going to try to help you run your business the way it needs to be run.
- 11:25As opposed to.
- 11:27You running your business.
- 11:30The way it needs to be run.
- 11:31You'll have an increased turnover.
- 11:33You're going to lose those prized employees.
- 11:36Unmotivated Employees are more likely to leave increasing recruitment and training costs.
- 11:43And even more, it's been proven that a loss of an employee, even at a low level in your company could cost you double their salary.
- 11:56Why...
- 11:57That's your employees telling you how to run business as opposed to the other way around.
- 12:03And then another consequence of unmotivated employees is you have damage to your morale.
- 12:10We've all felt that before everybody gets bummed out.
- 12:15Just depressed and you know what, because of the negativity bias.
- 12:20That negative in your morale is bigger than.
- 12:26The positive.
- 12:29Did you think about that?
- 12:30I know, right.
- 12:32It's weird.
- 12:33Like I said that negativity bias.
- 12:35It's always bigger than the positivity bias.
- 12:40And this disengagement can spread to other team members and create a toxic work environment.
- 12:47Seen it happen so many times.
- 12:50And it's crucial to identify you're unmotivated members and then find what motivates them.
- 12:57That's where that assessment comes into play, because you can find what exactly motivates your team.
- 13:03And then inspire them that way.
- 13:06Here's some strategies to boost motivation with your team.
- 13:11Number one personalized development programs.
- 13:16Understand what drives each team member.
- 13:20And align their roles with their personal goals.
- 13:23Offer opportunities for skill development and career advancement.
- 13:28This is where that assessment comes into play because you want to identify.
- 13:34Individual goals.
- 13:35What are their goals?
- 13:36Why are they working there?
- 13:38That's kind of important to know.
- 13:39Why do you work here?
- 13:41What do you value?
- 13:43Identifying if their values align with your values is important and that can happen in the interview process as well.
- 13:53And provide professional growth, provide ways for the team to learn their, their personal skills that they want to develop.
- 14:02And what I like about pay comm, which is what one of the companies I use uses is it has an area where you could take personal development.
- 14:13You could even take how to deal with.
- 14:16A disgruntled employee.
- 14:19Oh so much.
- 14:21And recognition and rewards.
- 14:22I just talked about this in one of my previous.
- 14:26videos and rewarding your team for things done.
- 14:31Right.
- 14:31And recognizing them is crucial.
- 14:35It's crucial for motivation because people like to be recognized and appreciated.
- 14:40You want to recognize individual and team accomplishments?
- 14:46And then customize the rewards to match the preferences of the different generations.
- 14:52As we talked about earlier.
- 14:54Number three, create a positive work environment.
- 14:59Promote work-life balance and implement.
- 15:02Flexible work arrangements.
- 15:04And foster inclusive inclusivity.
- 15:09Include everyone.
- 15:11That's what I mean.
- 15:13Create a culture where everyone feels valued and included.
- 15:17That is important.
- 15:19And, you know, I love a health fair for this reason because it gives, it gives us the opportunity to go, okay.
- 15:27We're including everybody.
- 15:28At in there, different things, you have different booths set up.
- 15:33In different areas.
- 15:34And everybody visits the one that they feel inclined to, not who you say they need to visit.
- 15:41And encourage open communication, establish regular feedback sessions, to understand employee concerns and suggestions.
- 15:51Be open to that.
- 15:52That's why I say consistent assessments.
- 15:55Is crucial.
- 15:57It's crucial just to have an understanding of what's motivating your team at the time and have an open communication be ready to take the feedback that's going to come in and make the changes necessary.
- 16:12That's where a corporate wellness professional can slide right in.
- 16:16And be your undercover boss, take care of things.
- 16:19Tell you, give you your feedback of how your team is performing, and then also give your team feedback of what your managers want, and we want to know that by having these assessments or having a rewards program that.
- 16:37Identifies this.
- 16:39And have transparent leadership.
- 16:42Leaders should be approachable and transparent about company goals and changes.
- 16:48This.
- 16:50Is one of the ones that I just really love because it, it helps us to understand.
- 16:58Where there are pitfalls.
- 17:00You're wasting money on team members that are not led effectively.
- 17:05I'm just gonna leave that there.
- 17:08On the table.
- 17:08The role of corporate wellness programs.
- 17:11Let's talk about that.
- 17:13We have several different types of wellness initiatives.
- 17:17We can have a fitness program.
- 17:19You could have a gym for your employees that can be really inspirational and motivational.
- 17:25And I'll put pictures of our gym on these slides.
- 17:29So you can see what I'm talking about because I just revamped the gym at one of the companies I worked for.
- 17:36And it's.
- 17:37My ideal was to have it be motivational and inspirational for years to come.
- 17:44Even after I'm gone.
- 17:45I want it to be a place where you walk in and you feel like you want to work out.
- 17:50That's what I wanted.
- 17:51And that's what it became.
- 17:52You want to provide mental health support.
- 17:56There is so many different things and, and actually I do my health fair in April and it's mental health awareness month.
- 18:03So.
- 18:04Make that my theme and I provide mental health.
- 18:09Support and resources all throughout the year.
- 18:12Even on my wellness days, I provide mental health support.
- 18:16We also have the calm app available to our team that I work with.
- 18:21And that calm app is very beneficial for the team if they need some mental health support, because that's one of the things that calm prides itself on is mental health.
- 18:34And then you also want to provide nutritional guidance.
- 18:37You'd be surprised how many people don't know.
- 18:40That things about reading a food label or what is the nutritional value in this drink, as opposed to this drink?
- 18:49Why do we need this vitamin, as opposed to this vitamin, for example, we just had a wellness date with one of the companies that I worked for and our theme was.
- 18:59Immunity support.
- 19:01And I brought in a supplement person who brought in all these different supplements and explained to them.
- 19:07Why they needed this, why they needed that.
- 19:10And it's beneficial for people to understand, Hey, we're not getting all the nutrients we need from our food.
- 19:17So let's add them with a supplement.
- 19:19And.
- 19:21Let's see how that works and see how that helps your body.
- 19:24I'm also big on biohacking, which is a new wave of healthcare.
- 19:31It's a trillion dollar business.
- 19:33And what biohacking is, is being proactive in your health as opposed to reactive, which means we're going to take care of certain things like maybe taking supplements.
- 19:44Maybe doing red light therapy, maybe doing recovery.
- 19:47Ice baths all these types of things are biohacking our system.
- 19:52So we live longer.
- 19:54We feel better.
- 19:55We look better and.
- 19:57It's natural.
- 19:59That's what I like about it.
- 20:00Another thing that corporate wellness professionals can do is provide engagement activities.
- 20:07One of the things that I'm in charge of is the lunch and learns, which means they meet with an executive team member.
- 20:14And then 10.
- 20:16Team members meet with this person for during lunchtime.
- 20:20And it builds comradery.
- 20:22It builds mentorship.
- 20:24It helps with change management as well, because what happens is the team members get to see the executive in a regular position and talk to them and understand, oh, now I see why we changed this method as opposed to that method, or we're doing this now, instead of that.
- 20:43And the lunch and learns are very beneficial for this because it helps others to see what's going on inside the company all across.
- 20:51The whole company and it builds comradery.
- 20:55Engagement.
- 20:56That's what we're talking about.
- 20:58Another way you could build engagement is create a rewards program.
- 21:02And I just talked about this not too long ago, but I actually had a meeting with a company called Bonusly.
- 21:09And what they do is they provide like a social media platform where it.
- 21:16Rewards employees and they can go buy things with their rewards points.
- 21:22For example, let's say you're a team leader and somebody sends you some points for doing a great job as your team lead, or they help you help somebody.
- 21:33With a problem.
- 21:35And you got those points.
- 21:37Everybody in the team sees that.
- 21:40As well as it's like a social media feed.
- 21:42So it's like, okay.
- 21:45So-and-so got these rewards for being a good team leader and helping so-and-so with this problem.
- 21:52And.
- 21:53This helps build comradery.
- 21:56It also helps to build.
- 21:58Faith in the team and, and have a transparent leader.
- 22:03I love that platform.
- 22:06Um, I will have a link to that in the show notes and description below because it's very valuable resource for a corporate wellness professional to see how the team is doing.
- 22:18And who's winning more points as a leader, or who's winning more points for their performance in their job.
- 22:24And they want to do this because it intrinsically motivates.
- 22:28Them maybe, perhaps they want to buy an Amazon card with that, or they want to donate to their favorite charity with those points.
- 22:36This program is phenomenal.
- 22:38So, as you can tell, I'm kind of passionate about motivation.
- 22:44I think it helps so much in a team environment and understanding what motivates the team helps as well.
- 22:53And it is the cornerstone in your team.
- 22:58And if you lose that cornerstone.
- 23:00You know, what's going to happen.
- 23:02Your team is going to be lopsided.
- 23:04So we want to have that stone set in there and ready to go.
- 23:10All right.
- 23:10That's my episode for today.
- 23:11I trust that you found it helpful.
- 23:13If you know someone who could benefit from this, please share it with them.
- 23:17And until next time I will see you next time, peace out and Namaste.
