- 0:09Speaker 1: Hi, this is Robert Hayes and I'm listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:13Speaker 2: It's showtime.
- 0:19Speaker 3: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:22Speaker 3: Picture Association of America.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Kilowatts of power.
- 1:18Speaker 1: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian. I'm Phillip.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And we're coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:23Speaker 1: a very strange high school. That is the Oddity Studios,
- 1:26Speaker 1: but more on that later. normally when it's you and
- 1:31Speaker 1: I there'll be some third weirdo here and we yammer
- 1:34Speaker 1: on about horror movies and that didn't come together this
- 1:38Speaker 1: time around we were planning it and then that didn't
- 1:41Speaker 1: happen and we were planning an alternate thing and that
- 1:44Speaker 1: didn't happen so I don't know this is how things
- 1:46Speaker 1: go in the real world trying to put things together
- 1:49Speaker 1: is one of the biggest hurdles in making this show
- 1:52Speaker 1: is just getting people together in the same place at
- 1:55Speaker 1: the same time so First of all, thank you for
- 1:58Speaker 1: being here.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Oh, thank you for having me.
- 1:59Speaker 1: But it also leads to weird scenarios when we're like, well, okay,
- 2:03Speaker 1: we don't want to do that. That Nora person's off
- 2:07Speaker 1: having a fabulous vacation. So we can be annoyed at
- 2:09Speaker 1: her for that reason. Oh, I am.
- 2:11Speaker 2: But that's... But I'm more annoyed that our backup plan
- 2:14Speaker 2: fell through.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yeah, that one we're still... I won't even... We won't
- 2:18Speaker 1: reveal it yet because we still kind of want to
- 2:20Speaker 1: make it happen later.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Oh, I need that to happen.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So we'll put that.
- 2:23Speaker 2: On the back burner.
- 2:24Speaker 1: But... But then we were left with, well, now what
- 2:27Speaker 1: the hell do we do? So I was like, all right,
- 2:29Speaker 1: it's so commonplace now that all we talk about is horror.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I was like, let's not do horror. And that'll be weird.
- 2:36Speaker 1: It'll just be a weird offshoot of a normal episode
- 2:39Speaker 1: if anything on this show is ever normal.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Those quotes don't get used much around here. Right. So yeah,
- 2:46Speaker 1: for once, we don't necessarily have to talk about anything creepy.
- 2:51Speaker 1: So is there any non-creepy things that you've done or seen?
- 2:55Speaker 2: Oh, non-creepy? No. I'm trying to think. I did watch...
- 3:00Speaker 2: I watched an enjoyable movie last weekend and I can't even...
- 3:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I re-watched Mad Max Fury Road.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Nice. So.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It's almost overwhelming. Oh, yeah. Like, I remember recently going, yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 1: I want to watch that again because it was so good. And, like,
- 3:17Speaker 1: I got into it about 15 minutes. I'm like, Jesus.
- 3:20Speaker 1: It's just so nonstop and just in your face.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I watched it on a screen that was larger than
- 3:28Speaker 2: a TV, not as big as a movie theater, and
- 3:30Speaker 2: I was like, I'm getting queasy here.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just a lot to deal with. I love it, but, man,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I forget until I'm into it again. I'm like, this
- 3:39Speaker 1: is just so Non-stop craziness.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Right. Well, mine.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I'm kind of glad this happened the way it did
- 3:48Speaker 1: because I finished and I was like, man, I really
- 3:51Speaker 1: want to talk about this. Except it's not technically horror,
- 3:54Speaker 1: so I guess I can't talk about it on the
- 3:55Speaker 1: next episode. I mean, as much as I straddle that
- 3:59Speaker 1: line anyway every episode, but I was like, this definitely...
- 4:03Speaker 1: And then as I went into it today, I was like, well, good.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Now I can talk about it. And I was like, well,
- 4:07Speaker 1: you know, a lot of people will probably still consider
- 4:09Speaker 1: this creepy. And the fact I almost posted something about
- 4:12Speaker 1: it because I finished the weekend and I was like, huh,
- 4:15Speaker 1: you know, most people would be weirded out that I
- 4:17Speaker 1: just watched Head twice this weekend.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Oh, the monkeys.
- 4:21Speaker 1: The monkeys. Yeah. Again, sounds like I'm watching porn. But no,
- 4:24Speaker 1: it actually was the monkeys full length feature show. Very
- 4:30Speaker 1: different offshoot type of thing than the show.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I'm impressed you sat through it not just once, but twice.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Well.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Because it is a struggle bus of a movie.
- 4:39Speaker 1: See? It's weird. And that's the thing. This is how...
- 4:43Speaker 1: Because it's weird that I'd never seen it because it
- 4:46Speaker 1: was presented to me years ago. And it was like...
- 4:50Speaker 1: I was familiar enough with the show at the time.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I can get back to that later. But the way
- 4:55Speaker 1: it was presented to me, this guy I used to
- 4:57Speaker 1: work with, and like... we watched a lot of the
- 5:00Speaker 1: same stuff and he brought up that he like, he's like, Oh,
- 5:03Speaker 1: have you seen it? And he's like, well, let me
- 5:05Speaker 1: just put it into perspective how it's not the show.
- 5:09Speaker 1: You know, that footage of that guy getting shot in
- 5:11Speaker 1: the head. Well, it's in it a whole lot.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I don't remember that.
- 5:15Speaker 1: It's the, like the shot from Vietnam.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah. That's the thing. As he said it, it came
- 5:20Speaker 1: to my mind. It's one of those images that doesn't
- 5:22Speaker 1: really leave once it's in your head. Once you've seen
- 5:25Speaker 1: that image, you're like, Ooh, yep, that's real. So it,
- 5:30Speaker 1: It is one of those scenes because they do that
- 5:31Speaker 1: weird like split screen because it was the 70s and
- 5:34Speaker 1: they were really thrilled with that. But it does it
- 5:36Speaker 1: like it breaks it down into like 30 images on
- 5:38Speaker 1: the screen. And the last one it goes one, two, three.
- 5:41Speaker 1: And it does it like 29 times in front of
- 5:44Speaker 1: your face of that guy getting shot in the head.
- 5:46Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah, this is not what they were
- 5:49Speaker 1: putting on the TV show.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 5:51Speaker 1: So I wanted to get around to watching it anyway
- 5:56Speaker 1: because I had that presented to me so many years ago.
- 5:59Speaker 1: And then still, I was like, why haven't I seen it?
- 6:02Speaker 1: Just for movie dork completist, you know. Plus, I genuinely
- 6:06Speaker 1: like the monkeys.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I enjoy the monkeys.
- 6:08Speaker 1: The monkeys get a lot of shit. And I'm like,
- 6:10Speaker 1: you know, they're as solid a band as anybody at
- 6:13Speaker 1: that time. And people like to call them out for
- 6:15Speaker 1: not being a real band. I was like, half of
- 6:17Speaker 1: the band were legit musicians that had been working their
- 6:21Speaker 1: whole life up until then. Yeah, the other half were actors.
- 6:24Speaker 1: But I'm not pretending that they weren't put together for
- 6:26Speaker 1: this very specific purpose.
- 6:28Speaker 2: They were.
- 6:28Speaker 1: They were. But, you know, half of them were genuine, like,
- 6:32Speaker 1: songwriters and, like, trained musicians. I don't know.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Well, and they had, their songwriting team was incredible because
- 6:39Speaker 2: you had, like, Carole King and Neil Diamond and a
- 6:43Speaker 2: lot of other big acts.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Even at the time, like, as I said, my show, like,
- 6:49Speaker 1: I was right at the right, I wasn't there the
- 6:52Speaker 1: first time, obviously. I'm old, but I'm not that old.
- 6:55Speaker 1: But I was right at that, I recently gave credit
- 6:57Speaker 1: to MTV, and I'm like, For so many reasons. In
- 7:00Speaker 1: that 15 to 20 year span, MTV did so many
- 7:04Speaker 1: things that massively changed the industry. Oh, yeah. And one
- 7:07Speaker 1: of the, like, I guess lesser ones was just bringing
- 7:09Speaker 1: back the Monkees TV show. And, like, they played it
- 7:13Speaker 1: on MTV. Eventually, it got rolled over to VH1. But, like, initially,
- 7:17Speaker 1: they put it on, like, this is, like, one of
- 7:20Speaker 1: our primetime shows. Yeah. Like, you know, they were just, like.
- 7:22Speaker 1: We got rights to this. We own Nickelodeon and Nick
- 7:25Speaker 1: at Night and whatever the hell else we want to run.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And they picked The Monkees because it kind of fit
- 7:30Speaker 1: them as far as attitude and music. So they started
- 7:35Speaker 1: running it like a regular show. And I watched those
- 7:37Speaker 1: episodes and was like, this is a hell of a
- 7:40Speaker 1: lot of fun.
- 7:40Speaker 2: It is a lot of fun.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And it was interesting that it worked in a music
- 7:45Speaker 1: video every episode. When there wasn't a music video channel,
- 7:49Speaker 1: it more than... was ahead of that wave of, you know,
- 7:53Speaker 1: on MTV many, many years later, but like it was
- 7:57Speaker 1: doing that in the late sixties. So like, that's really
- 8:00Speaker 1: ahead of its time for that scale of, of just
- 8:04Speaker 1: every week. And it wasn't just a song performance. It
- 8:07Speaker 1: was cut into a music video essentially at the end
- 8:10Speaker 1: of every episode. So that, I don't know, like I
- 8:14Speaker 1: was always kind of impressed with how ahead of the
- 8:17Speaker 1: curve it was from that angle. but also how just
- 8:21Speaker 1: weird and bizarre.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Their shit was. It was the first sitcom, I found
- 8:29Speaker 2: this out recently, first sitcom to use a lot of
- 8:33Speaker 2: the camera techniques that are now cliche in TV, but
- 8:37Speaker 2: it was never seen before on TV.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Well, and they always had, which no surprise on this,
- 8:43Speaker 1: especially if you listen to our other episodes, To me,
- 8:45Speaker 1: as I watch it now, I'm like, it's just kind
- 8:47Speaker 1: of like live action Scooby-Doo.
- 8:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Sometimes they're solving mysteries. That's give or take. But it's
- 8:53Speaker 1: so silly and they get into these crazy adventures that's
- 8:56Speaker 1: almost like an animated cartoon type of wacky show. But
- 9:01Speaker 1: they brought in live actors to do it. But that's
- 9:04Speaker 1: the thing. Even as a kid watching it that first time,
- 9:06Speaker 1: I'm like... mike is cool oh yeah and i was
- 9:10Speaker 1: like he was just so like deadpan and like he
- 9:13Speaker 1: was ahead of all the jokes and like everybody else
- 9:16Speaker 1: got to be the dumb characters but usually it wasn't
- 9:18Speaker 1: mike mike was always kind of like the the one
- 9:20Speaker 1: making the weird comments along the way and being a
- 9:23Speaker 1: smart ass so it's like i always liked him and
- 9:25Speaker 1: then moving forward now when i started listening to their
- 9:28Speaker 1: music again i'm like he was the songwriter like he
- 9:30Speaker 1: was writing songs before he even got involved with the
- 9:33Speaker 1: monkeys and like Some of their best stuff, I feel like,
- 9:36Speaker 1: is written by him. So, yeah, I always give him
- 9:39Speaker 1: credit as a songwriter. Peter could play every freaking instrument.
- 9:42Speaker 1: He was a classically trained musician.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Well, they put out an album in 67 called Headquarters,
- 9:50Speaker 2: which was they had to fight to be allowed, number one,
- 9:54Speaker 2: to perform on it, and number two, to put their
- 9:56Speaker 2: own songs on it. And it is.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Amazingly good. Like, if I didn't know who the Monkees
- 10:04Speaker 2: were and somebody put it on for me, I would
- 10:06Speaker 2: be like, this is just a good record. And it
- 10:09Speaker 2: was the number two record of the year. It was
- 10:14Speaker 2: only knocked off the charts by Sgt. Pepper.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Which, again, like, when you're... fighting against the Beatles
- 10:21Speaker 1: in their peak area and like kind of holding their
- 10:24Speaker 1: own for something that people still treated like a joke.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Like something that wasn't real, which again, they initially weren't,
- 10:32Speaker 1: but they became a band whether they liked it or not.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Like they were just along the way. They're like, well,
- 10:36Speaker 1: we're going to put out these albums anyway. So too bad.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Like if you guys want to tour, that's up to you.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And even then they barely got a chance to. So
- 10:44Speaker 1: that was movie to the movie. Like that is, I
- 10:47Speaker 1: was so... And still, there's so many other weird, crazy
- 10:52Speaker 1: nonsense things that go on in that movie. But pretty
- 10:55Speaker 1: early on, you get that live performance of Circle Sky.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Which is, again, written by Mike. And it is so good.
- 11:02Speaker 2: It is not typical Monkees.
- 11:04Speaker 1: no and even it's just like it's a solid rock song.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Even the opening song that porpoise song is not what
- 11:10Speaker 2: you expect from.
- 11:11Speaker 1: It's weird but it's yeah it's not the rocker but
- 11:13Speaker 1: no circle sky is so good and like if you're
- 11:17Speaker 1: watching that and then that's what brought me back around
- 11:20Speaker 1: to the second time because i i ended up finding
- 11:22Speaker 1: a copy of it and it was one of the
- 11:23Speaker 1: ones that had commentary and then i looked through it
- 11:27Speaker 1: and i was like wait it rattled off all of
- 11:30Speaker 1: It was commentary with all four of the monkeys.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And I was like, well, so once I got into it,
- 11:38Speaker 1: it's not like they were all in the same room
- 11:39Speaker 1: watching it.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:40Speaker 1: They went to each one individually. They all did commentary,
- 11:44Speaker 1: and they cut it all together. So you get, I guess,
- 11:46Speaker 1: the most interesting comments and stories along the way, but
- 11:49Speaker 1: from all four of them. So I'm like, I kind
- 11:51Speaker 1: of want to hear that. Maybe more than watching the movie.
- 11:54Speaker 1: After I'd already gone through the movie, I was like,
- 11:56Speaker 1: and truthfully, it is arguably even more fun to watch
- 12:00Speaker 1: it and just sort of hear them go, well, here's
- 12:02Speaker 1: what was going on with this. And like, and, and
- 12:05Speaker 1: Mike more than all of them is kind of like,
- 12:07Speaker 1: he's the most grown up about it. Like, you know,
- 12:11Speaker 1: he like really came around once he like got out
- 12:13Speaker 1: of monkey business and literally he left the whole band
- 12:17Speaker 1: behind for a long time and like just got into
- 12:20Speaker 1: producing and was like doing tons of other stuff. And
- 12:23Speaker 1: like listening to him tell stories of like, Because he
- 12:27Speaker 1: also kind of came off like a jerk.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 1: When you see, like, when they show those behind-the-scenes stuff
- 12:33Speaker 1: of just him being him, he was always kind of
- 12:36Speaker 1: a dick to the, like, people running the camera and
- 12:38Speaker 1: the guys that are, like, talking to him off-screen. There
- 12:40Speaker 1: was always stuff that I'm like, I don't know if
- 12:42Speaker 1: you want to hang out with Mike. And it's funny,
- 12:44Speaker 1: listening to him tell stories, he's like, he didn't know. Like,
- 12:47Speaker 1: he was such, still, like, kind of a dumb kid
- 12:49Speaker 1: coming into the industry. So he's like, half of these
- 12:52Speaker 1: stories is like, yeah, I didn't know what was going on.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I was like, so... Listening to him be the grown
- 12:57Speaker 1: up and like call himself out for like he was
- 12:59Speaker 1: kind of being an asshole because he was covering for
- 13:01Speaker 1: the fact that he didn't know what the hell was
- 13:03Speaker 1: going on. Like he was still a dumb kid and
- 13:05Speaker 1: his way to overcompensate was just be like, screw you guys.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So I can see that.
- 13:10Speaker 1: That's way more interesting. But all of them had really
- 13:13Speaker 1: cool stuff to say. But back to Circle Sky, he said,
- 13:17Speaker 1: this is probably the best we ever were, like as
- 13:21Speaker 1: a band, because half the time, again, in studio, they're
- 13:24Speaker 1: bringing other people to play instruments half the time. Then
- 13:27Speaker 1: once you go out on them on tour, like they
- 13:29Speaker 1: barely ever had a chance to rehearse, he said, because
- 13:32Speaker 1: it was so constant and they were still shooting the
- 13:34Speaker 1: show half the time. So it's like they really didn't
- 13:36Speaker 1: even get a chance to rehearse and be good. They
- 13:39Speaker 1: just went out there and would wing it and try
- 13:41Speaker 1: to make the best of it they could. But he
- 13:43Speaker 1: said when they shot the movie, again, I guess you
- 13:46Speaker 1: have more budget by that time. They were also out
- 13:48Speaker 1: of the shooting schedule of the show.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I was going to say, I think the show had
- 13:51Speaker 2: been canceled for a year or so.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it was already kind of done. And then on
- 13:53Speaker 1: top of that, the director was just like, we can't
- 13:58Speaker 1: do it any other way. You have to go in
- 14:00Speaker 1: and we want to shoot this for real as a concert.
- 14:03Speaker 1: And they were like, well, if we're going to do that,
- 14:04Speaker 1: we need to get on this song. So they rehearsed
- 14:07Speaker 1: the hell out of that song. So what you get
- 14:09Speaker 1: is literally the live version of them playing that song.
- 14:13Speaker 1: And it's better. Like, I went back this last week.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I listened to the soundtrack album in the studio, and
- 14:19Speaker 1: it's just not as energetic. It's, like, way more low-key.
- 14:23Speaker 1: And I'm like, that kind of ruins the spirit of
- 14:25Speaker 1: the song. It's so cool in.
- 14:27Speaker 2: The live version.
- 14:28Speaker 1: So, yeah, I don't know. That won me over at
- 14:31Speaker 1: the beginning. And then as it goes on, it's the weirdest.
- 14:35Speaker 2: It's so weird.
- 14:35Speaker 1: It's so weird. But, I mean, I guess as it...
- 14:39Speaker 1: I was trying to compare it. I'm like, it's not
- 14:40Speaker 1: the fun goofiness of the show, but it's equally as random.
- 14:45Speaker 1: So it's like, it is the most weird segmented thing.
- 14:49Speaker 1: And every five minutes it becomes another thing. And like,
- 14:53Speaker 1: it barely follows any real, again, the only through line
- 14:57Speaker 1: is the fact that they constantly break that fourth wall
- 14:59Speaker 1: and they're like, hey guys, we're shooting a movie. And
- 15:02Speaker 1: they walk through the background of a set and they'll
- 15:05Speaker 1: see you out on the studio. So the real world
- 15:09Speaker 1: is the only real through line of them like, hey,
- 15:11Speaker 1: we're making this weird movie. But there's so many weird
- 15:15Speaker 1: bits that I'm just like, I don't even know what
- 15:17Speaker 1: you guys are going for. Right.
- 15:19Speaker 2: With some of that, I'm like, some of it, it's
- 15:22Speaker 2: pretty obvious because it's like, okay, you're making commentary on
- 15:26Speaker 2: how you were treated and how you were perceived. And
- 15:29Speaker 2: then some of it, it's like, okay, this is a
- 15:31Speaker 2: commentary on Vietnam. Okay, I'm down with that. And then
- 15:35Speaker 2: some of it, I'm like, I don't know what you're
- 15:38Speaker 2: talking about here.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Again, I think they were just, they were kind of
- 15:42Speaker 1: a weird artsy type of project anyway. So I think
- 15:46Speaker 1: sometimes it was just, this is avant-garde. We're being weird.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Especially then once you find out who wrote it and
- 15:53Speaker 1: was producing it. Yeah. If you're not familiar with it,
- 15:57Speaker 1: it was written, well, co-written by And I think produced.
- 16:00Speaker 1: And really the only reason I feel like that movie
- 16:02Speaker 1: got made was Jack Nicholson. Yeah. A very young Jack
- 16:06Speaker 1: Nicholson is behind the movie head.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Was it before or after Easy Rider?
- 16:12Speaker 1: This is the thing I realized. Because one of those bits,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I don't know how well you remember it if you've
- 16:16Speaker 1: been a while. But in the one where they're doing
- 16:19Speaker 1: like the war scene, which again, I guess weird Vietnam commentary.
- 16:23Speaker 1: But like. Mickey doesn't want to wear a helmet. And
- 16:27Speaker 1: then the other guy goes and gets the football helmet
- 16:29Speaker 1: off a guy. And it's a big gold ridiculous looking
- 16:32Speaker 1: football helmet. I'm like, that's the whole bit from Jack
- 16:35Speaker 1: Nicholson in Easy Rider. It's him wearing that gold helmet.
- 16:39Speaker 1: So I'm like, is it the same helmet? It has
- 16:42Speaker 1: to be like its own inside joke, if nothing else.
- 16:45Speaker 1: But I was like, is it even the same helmet?
- 16:47Speaker 1: Because it kind of looks like it actually. So then
- 16:51Speaker 1: I was like, well, which was first? So technically... Easy
- 16:54Speaker 1: Rider came out after Head, but they had to be
- 16:58Speaker 1: shooting it exactly... Because I was looking at the shooting schedule.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I was like, this is at the same time. So, like,
- 17:03Speaker 1: Jack must have been, like, over here making Head and
- 17:06Speaker 1: then would go shoot his scenes around that same time.
- 17:09Speaker 1: So much so that when they do one of those
- 17:11Speaker 1: break the scene and... At one point, Peter's like, oh,
- 17:14Speaker 1: I don't think I should do that. And he starts talking.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And the director comes in. One of the people walking
- 17:19Speaker 1: by is Dennis Hopper. Dennis Hopper. Oh, Dennis Hopper's in
- 17:22Speaker 1: it too? Yeah. Because I know you see Jack Nicholson
- 17:25Speaker 1: for like a second. And he starts talking. But you
- 17:27Speaker 1: almost have to slow it down. Again, I didn't even
- 17:31Speaker 1: notice it the first time. In the commentary, they're like,
- 17:33Speaker 1: there goes Dennis Hopper. And I was like, oh, shit,
- 17:35Speaker 1: I backed up. He's in the freaking costume from Easy Rider.
- 17:39Speaker 1: So they had to be shooting simultaneously, basically. and just
- 17:43Speaker 1: heading over there when they needed to do head stuff.
- 17:45Speaker 1: And I don't know, but yeah, it is weird. Once
- 17:49Speaker 1: you overlay that on top of it and whatever weird
- 17:53Speaker 1: commentary young Jack Nicholson wanted to be putting into this.
- 17:57Speaker 1: So like that comes into play. Very strange.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Very, very strange.
- 18:03Speaker 1: But I will say it's, it's worth the commentary. The
- 18:05Speaker 1: commentary is pretty interesting because again, they're all much older
- 18:09Speaker 1: by the time they got around to doing this version
- 18:11Speaker 1: of the commentary track. So, You get a lot more
- 18:14Speaker 1: reflection on it. If it would have been at the time,
- 18:16Speaker 1: it probably would have been just a bunch of four
- 18:17Speaker 1: goofballs being like, I remember when we shot this scene.
- 18:20Speaker 1: But they have a lot more of reflectiveness of their
- 18:24Speaker 1: whole career and what was going on with this movie
- 18:27Speaker 1: and what it means compared to now. So yeah, it's
- 18:31Speaker 1: pretty interesting.
- 18:32Speaker 2: It's one of those movies that I would recommend. It's
- 18:35Speaker 2: not for everybody.
- 18:36Speaker 1: It's definitely not for everybody.
- 18:37Speaker 2: I would recommend it to movie geeks and music geeks everywhere.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Just to say that I have seen this now.
- 18:46Speaker 1: That was kind of why I wanted it. Again, as
- 18:49Speaker 1: much as I like the band, I still was like,
- 18:52Speaker 1: I think more for the experience, I need to go
- 18:54Speaker 1: ahead and check this off my list as a geek.
- 18:57Speaker 1: I'm definitely glad I've seen it, but even more so, yeah,
- 19:00Speaker 1: I think the commentary track was way more interesting than
- 19:02Speaker 1: the movie.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I first became aware of it, I think I was
- 19:05Speaker 2: probably in high school and saw it at the, again,
- 19:09Speaker 2: old timey person talk but saw it at the video
- 19:13Speaker 2: store and thought okay well that this makes sense that
- 19:17Speaker 2: they would make a movie because that's what rock stars
- 19:20Speaker 2: did but then the beatles had several more movies and
- 19:25Speaker 2: then by the time i finally got around to watch
- 19:26Speaker 2: and i i'd even heard over the years that it's
- 19:28Speaker 2: like oh this is not like the tv show yeah
- 19:31Speaker 2: that's what i'd always heard but then somebody told me
- 19:33Speaker 2: well jack nicholson co-wrote it and i knew that he
- 19:35Speaker 2: was a loose cannon in the 60s definitely.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Back in the day he And was one of those
- 19:40Speaker 1: people who's like, whatever you got, I'm going to rebel
- 19:43Speaker 1: against it. He's an anti-establishment, especially in the 70s, kind
- 19:47Speaker 1: of a dude.
- 19:47Speaker 2: But he was... he he's good at what he does
- 19:50Speaker 2: yeah he uh he's great in one flew over the
- 19:54Speaker 2: cuckoo's nest good and easy rider fantastic in the last
- 19:58Speaker 2: detail and so it's all around that same time period
- 20:01Speaker 2: so i'm like well you know he was young and
- 20:03Speaker 2: full of energy so let's see what we got and
- 20:05Speaker 2: i watched it and i'm like i don't know what
- 20:09Speaker 2: Even having been warned that it's not your typical movie
- 20:12Speaker 2: and it's not typical monkeys, I was still not prepared.
- 20:16Speaker 1: It's definitely not. But again, it's just, if nothing else,
- 20:21Speaker 1: for movie geeks, it is that time capsule of like,
- 20:26Speaker 1: they're literally shooting this movie on the next lot over
- 20:30Speaker 1: or wherever the hell they were shooting Easy Rider, but
- 20:32Speaker 1: I'm like, that's going to revolutionize the film industry. That
- 20:36Speaker 1: is almost the dividing point of when Independent Cinema came along.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 20:40Speaker 1: When studios went, oh... I guess we've got to start
- 20:44Speaker 1: letting these weird hippies make movies, too.
- 20:47Speaker 2: That's when they started letting young people make movies.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Young people make movies and realize, well, we can do
- 20:51Speaker 1: this without as much of an investment. Instead of making
- 20:54Speaker 1: these huge, big-budget, old-timey movies, we can give you a
- 20:57Speaker 1: handful of, you know, here's a couple million bucks. Like,
- 21:00Speaker 1: go make your dumb movie. And, like, oh, wait, it
- 21:02Speaker 1: made a whole lot of money. So, like, suddenly you
- 21:04Speaker 1: get money involved and the studios are like, oh, maybe
- 21:07Speaker 1: we will let these kids make some movies.
- 21:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it definitely changed so much of it. So to
- 21:12Speaker 1: have this as like a companion piece that like, so
- 21:15Speaker 1: while they're over there doing this, this is also going on,
- 21:19Speaker 1: but this is being funded by a much bigger, more
- 21:22Speaker 1: studio run. So it's got a huge budget for that
- 21:25Speaker 1: type of movie at the time. But at the same time,
- 21:28Speaker 1: I'm like, it's also so weird. You can't believe a
- 21:31Speaker 1: studio was involved in this. Like how it came to be,
- 21:35Speaker 1: I don't know, because it's still got a good size
- 21:37Speaker 1: budget for this type of thing. But it's so random
- 21:42Speaker 1: and nonsensical that I'm like, what studio head was just like,
- 21:46Speaker 1: all right, I guess just let them finish this. They're
- 21:51Speaker 1: not going to go away until we make a movie.
- 21:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I don't get it.
- 21:55Speaker 1: But I'm glad I've seen it. Yeah.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 21:58Speaker 1: It's definitely a check off your list kind of movie. Again,
- 22:03Speaker 1: I think the commentary is kind of even better.
- 22:06Speaker 2: See, I need to watch it again just for that.
- 22:08Speaker 1: It's definitely worth listening to the commentary. yep so that
- 22:12Speaker 1: was my weird thing and i was like it seems
- 22:14Speaker 1: weird enough that i watched it once but sitting through
- 22:17Speaker 1: it a second time was an even more enlightening experience well.
- 22:21Speaker 2: It makes total sense when you said commentary because i
- 22:23Speaker 2: was like i don't.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Know second time in a row that's the thing like
- 22:27Speaker 1: within a day i watched both times and i was
- 22:29Speaker 1: just like yeah by itself again i don't know i
- 22:32Speaker 1: would have been back but with the commentary it's a
- 22:34Speaker 1: whole different experience so that was pretty fun.
- 22:39Speaker 2: All right.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Are you ready to get into the mood?
- 22:43Speaker 2: I think I am.
- 22:44Speaker 3: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Could the ugly, untalented gays please report to the principal's office?
- 22:53Speaker 1: Guess that's you guys. Tonight is our night. We're getting
- 22:57Speaker 1: in the cooch. I'm going to talk to Brittany. You
- 22:59Speaker 1: get the out of Isabel. What would I say?
- 23:01Speaker 2: Hey, girl, how's your boyfriend?
- 23:03Speaker 1: How's his.
- 23:06Speaker 4: Penis?
- 23:06Speaker 1: I'm going to expel you both for committing a crime
- 23:08Speaker 1: against Jeff.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Get out of the car.
- 23:10Speaker 1: You can't tell me what to do.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Get out of.
- 23:12Speaker 4: The freaking car.
- 23:17Speaker 1: We were just practicing for our self-defense club.
- 23:20Speaker 2: It's like a fight club? Yes.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Just stay in your lane until you're munching beaver at Westland. Yes, sir.
- 23:27Speaker 1: What's your plan here? Jeff is psychotic and they're picking
- 23:30Speaker 1: on the weak and defenseless. So we teach a bunch
- 23:33Speaker 1: of girls how to defend themselves.
- 23:34Speaker 5: They are grateful to us.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Adrenaline is flowing.
- 23:37Speaker 5: Next thing you know, Isabel and Brittany are kissing us
- 23:39Speaker 5: on the mouth.
- 23:42Speaker 1: You can be our club advisor.
- 23:43Speaker 2: You know, my mom did say I need to pick
- 23:45Speaker 2: up a hobby. Welcome to our fucking fight club. Let's
- 23:50Speaker 2: get it poppin' in this motherfucker.
- 23:57Speaker 4: I want that trophy. To have a safe space like this,
- 24:06Speaker 4: it means a lot to people.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I'm gonna finally reverse stalk my stalker.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Yeah!
- 24:10Speaker 1: I'll be able to kill my stepdad.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 24:13Speaker 3: You seem so supportive of women.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Especially the hot ones. Man-made therapy.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Are you cheating on me?
- 24:22Speaker 6: No!
- 24:23Speaker 2: I literally saw you yesterday.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Show nerd, I fucked your mom!
- 24:30Speaker 2: We are literally at the bottom.
- 24:32Speaker 1: We have nowhere to go but up. Your club is over.
- 24:38Speaker 4: They deserve a shot at showing everybody how fucking cool
- 24:41Speaker 4: they are.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Let's go fuck up some football players. I won that trophy.
- 24:49Speaker 2: You created a fight club to get some coochie.
- 24:52Speaker 1: You don't even know how to work that thing.
- 24:54Speaker 2: I know y'all ain't tickling the pearl.
- 24:56Speaker 6: I just don't know if you're supposed to be talking
- 24:58Speaker 6: to us like that, just like as a teacher.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Chill out what you're yelling for lay back it's all
- 25:07Speaker 1: been done before and if you could only let it
- 25:12Speaker 1: be you will see i like you the way you
- 25:17Speaker 1: are when we're driving in your car and you're talking.
- 25:22Speaker 2: To me one-on-one But you've become somebody else around everyone else.
- 25:28Speaker 1: You're washing your.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Back like you can't relax. You're trying to be cool.
- 25:33Speaker 1: You look like a fool to me.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Tell me why'd you have to go and make things
- 25:39Speaker 4: so complicated? See the way you're acting.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Like you're somebody else gets me frustrated. Well, once again,
- 26:03Speaker 1: we were going very different than our usual trips down
- 26:07Speaker 1: horror lane, creepy as they may be. So since we
- 26:11Speaker 1: didn't have a specific direction, I was like, you know,
- 26:14Speaker 1: We never do comedy, or rarely. I mean, we do
- 26:17Speaker 1: some horror comedies, but they're their own weird subcategory.
- 26:19Speaker 2: The Dead Meat or whatever we would just watch.
- 26:21Speaker 1: But just, yeah, I was like, our recent cow movie,
- 26:24Speaker 1: that was kind of a horror comedy.
- 26:25Speaker 2: What was that called? Was it Dead Meat?
- 26:27Speaker 1: The Mad. The Mad. Wow, I was way off. But the, yeah,
- 26:31Speaker 1: so we definitely get some comedy in, but we rarely,
- 26:35Speaker 1: and I've said this to you in the past, like,
- 26:37Speaker 1: I also usually don't care about most modern comedy. I
- 26:41Speaker 1: like comedies, but when I think of the ones I like,
- 26:44Speaker 1: they're all from, like, 30 years ago. Right, right, right.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Or longer. Like, it's rare that there's a common, one
- 26:50Speaker 1: that normal people out on the street that have seen
- 26:53Speaker 1: recent movie that people consider a comedy that I'm like, yeah,
- 26:56Speaker 1: that was great. It's rare that I have that.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I'm sitting here trying to think what the most recent
- 27:00Speaker 2: big budget mainstream Hollywood comedy is that I've watched. Mean
- 27:06Speaker 2: Girls is the only thing I can think of.
- 27:07Speaker 1: There you go. That's how old now?
- 27:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:10Speaker 1: It's not really a recent movie anymore. Same thing when
- 27:12Speaker 1: I think like, oh, you know, like Game Night. I
- 27:15Speaker 1: was really happy with Game Night. That's already been a
- 27:18Speaker 1: long time.
- 27:18Speaker 2: That's been a while.
- 27:19Speaker 1: So I'm like, yeah, so nothing since then? I remember
- 27:23Speaker 1: we watched Mystery Team. I really liked that. What was that,
- 27:25Speaker 1: like 12 to 15 years ago? Like, Mystery Team's really good,
- 27:30Speaker 1: by the way.
- 27:30Speaker 2: I haven't seen that one.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, that's worth watching. But again, not really recent. So, yeah. Comedies.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I like them, but it's rare that I run into
- 27:41Speaker 1: new ones that I'm excited about. And then lately I've
- 27:44Speaker 1: heard so much about this movie that I was like,
- 27:47Speaker 1: you know, if we got nothing specific to watch, it's
- 27:50Speaker 1: a good excuse for me to watch this one. So,
- 27:52Speaker 1: that's what brings us to this Sofa Theater feature is Bottoms.
- 27:58Speaker 1: The year is 2023. The director is Emma Selgeman. And
- 28:03Speaker 1: the plot, according to IMDb, two unpopular queer high school
- 28:07Speaker 1: students start a fight club to have sex before graduation.
- 28:11Speaker 1: That's pretty accurate. Yeah, that's... So with that spoiler alert,
- 28:15Speaker 1: we will, I'm sure, run the hell out of this.
- 28:18Speaker 1: And it is definitely worth seeing, so go seek it out.
- 28:22Speaker 2: You know, I feel like it's weird that we watched
- 28:24Speaker 2: what is.
- 28:27Speaker 2: I hate to use the term, but I guess some
- 28:30Speaker 2: people might call it a chick movie, and our resident
- 28:33Speaker 2: chick is not here.
- 28:34Speaker 1: I did think it was interesting as we got into
- 28:36Speaker 1: this because I would like to hear her take on it.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I would love to hear her take on it.
- 28:40Speaker 1: But once again, it's not horror, so usually the only
- 28:42Speaker 1: time we're all three here is because we're watching horror.
- 28:46Speaker 1: So I don't know.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Because I feel like the characters, I do feel like
- 28:50Speaker 2: this is a female empowerment movie.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Definitely. Definitely.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Which I want everyone to know I say that with
- 28:56Speaker 2: all respect.
- 28:58Speaker 1: We're on the good side of the Barbie people.
- 29:01Speaker 2: For now.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Because in a year that, yeah, we had so many
- 29:04Speaker 1: people lose their shit because Barbie was popular.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:07Speaker 1: And I'm like, no, I'm not on that side. You
- 29:09Speaker 1: guys can be pissy about it if you want.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:12Speaker 1: So, yeah, we're not on that side of that.
- 29:14Speaker 2: But I also feel like our lead characters were... Painfully realistic.
- 29:20Speaker 2: But I'm also saying that from a man's point of view,
- 29:24Speaker 2: and I would love to hear a woman's take on this.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Definitely. But this was, as I watched it, and I
- 29:30Speaker 1: was like, yeah, I would like to hear what she
- 29:32Speaker 1: has to say about it. Also, this is a, as
- 29:34Speaker 1: in stated in this, a very queer friendly movie.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:37Speaker 1: In its own way. Everybody gets beat up, but still
- 29:40Speaker 1: like the characters themselves.
- 29:42Speaker 2: But as they point out several times in the movie, nobody,
- 29:45Speaker 2: none of the characters got beat up because they're queer.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:49Speaker 2: So I was happy to see that.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:51Speaker 1: So it's like that in and of itself is a
- 29:54Speaker 1: different category that we don't have a lot of representation,
- 29:57Speaker 1: but you know, that's not our fault. Feel free to
- 30:00Speaker 1: join the show. But as I got into it, I
- 30:04Speaker 1: was like, well, even though there are these two big
- 30:06Speaker 1: areas that we don't fall into, I was like, that's
- 30:09Speaker 1: why I think this movie works so well is because
- 30:12Speaker 1: it doesn't matter. Like it's not asking you to like
- 30:16Speaker 1: it because of these other categories. It's just a good comedy.
- 30:20Speaker 1: And that should be like, that is why it should
- 30:23Speaker 1: be universally like praised because it's just freaking funny.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Well, on that, and yeah, it is very funny, but
- 30:31Speaker 2: on that topic, one thing that I liked is that
- 30:35Speaker 2: apart from the two main characters who they point out
- 30:39Speaker 2: right away are gay or lesbians, they don't even bring
- 30:44Speaker 2: that up with any of the others. Except for one
- 30:46Speaker 2: point where it is important to the plot to know
- 30:48Speaker 2: that she's straight.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Or eventually almost everyone's gay. Yeah. As it unfolds, it
- 30:53Speaker 1: was like, maybe that's just the takeaway. You might as
- 30:57Speaker 1: well just Consider your options. Yeah. So, I mean, I
- 31:02Speaker 1: spent half the movie. I've known Rachel Sennett is, and
- 31:07Speaker 1: I was going to look at her list and try
- 31:08Speaker 1: to figure out when, because I've known who she is
- 31:10Speaker 1: for years.
- 31:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:11Speaker 1: And, like, I know she worked with this director on
- 31:14Speaker 1: Shiva Baby, so, like, she's been doing movies. I remember
- 31:18Speaker 1: her sitcom run was probably the most screen time I've
- 31:23Speaker 1: seen of her.
- 31:24Speaker 2: What sitcom was that?
- 31:26Speaker 1: Now I better look and see because that's the sad
- 31:28Speaker 1: thing is like she was just it was such a
- 31:32Speaker 1: weird like standard regular old sitcom. And then she just
- 31:37Speaker 1: got to be like the daughter. So everything was like
- 31:41Speaker 1: so normal sitcom. It was so weird watching her like.
- 31:46Speaker 1: just kind of have to play normal, like knowing her
- 31:49Speaker 1: sense of humor, which comes through very heavily in this movie.
- 31:53Speaker 1: So try to imagine her in a regular network, half
- 31:56Speaker 1: hour sitcom scenario. It's like, and where she's not the lead.
- 32:00Speaker 1: So she really doesn't even have much to do in it.
- 32:02Speaker 1: She's just there to have funny one-liners every once in
- 32:06Speaker 1: a while.
- 32:06Speaker 2: But yeah, you got to pay your dues.
- 32:10Speaker 1: I mean, it was, it was entertaining, but so yeah,
- 32:13Speaker 1: that was call your mother. which was the Kira Sedgwick
- 32:17Speaker 1: fronted sitcom. And it was, as that type of thing goes,
- 32:22Speaker 1: it was fun. It was, you know, her and Joey
- 32:26Speaker 1: Bragg are the siblings and like they didn't live with
- 32:30Speaker 1: their mother and then their mother moves out to LA
- 32:33Speaker 1: to be near them. And then they have to put
- 32:35Speaker 1: up with their mom as sort of grownups, which the
- 32:37Speaker 1: other thing is weird because she's playing like a grownup adult,
- 32:41Speaker 1: obviously in her mid twenties woman on that sitcom. And
- 32:44Speaker 1: I was just like, Wait, are they in high school? Yeah.
- 32:47Speaker 1: So it was kind of hard for me to back
- 32:48Speaker 1: up and be like, both these leads are easily in
- 32:51Speaker 1: their mid-20s. But, I mean, that's every movie, every TV show.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Everybody in high school is played by 28-year-olds.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:59Speaker 1: So it's not unusual. It's just one of those I'd
- 33:02Speaker 1: gotten used to her being not a high schooler, so
- 33:05Speaker 1: I had to back it up a little bit and
- 33:06Speaker 1: be like, oh, well, whatever.
- 33:08Speaker 6: Right.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Out of context, I guess I could buy it. Neither
- 33:11Speaker 1: of them look old. They just don't seem like high schoolers. Right.
- 33:14Speaker 2: No, I'm looking at the pictures from the show and
- 33:17Speaker 2: I'm like, man.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it's very sitcom-y and did not last. I think
- 33:20Speaker 1: it only got that one season. But that was probably
- 33:23Speaker 1: the most mainstream thing. But I've known of her mostly Instagram.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 33:29Speaker 1: If you follow her on Instagram, and I feel like
- 33:32Speaker 1: it's a very, speaking of a nice feminist agenda... I
- 33:37Speaker 1: feel like her entire Instagram feed is just baiting idiots.
- 33:41Speaker 2: On the internet. Okay.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Because it's everything she does, like a normal Hollywood person
- 33:47Speaker 1: going out in town, going on parties, going to do fun,
- 33:49Speaker 1: cool stuff. And she's usually dressed awesome or looks, again,
- 33:54Speaker 1: she's mighty attractive. So this is her photo. She looks
- 33:57Speaker 1: that way. Almost never in the entire run of her
- 34:02Speaker 1: Instagram is she smiling. Every shot, no matter how cool
- 34:08Speaker 1: a thing she's doing, no matter how awesome a dress
- 34:10Speaker 1: she's wearing, just dead face.
- 34:13Speaker 2: That's great.
- 34:14Speaker 1: And I'm like, I can see the comments coming through. Oh, yeah.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Why don't you smile? I swear it has to be.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Because I kept looking at them going, all right, this
- 34:23Speaker 1: is a conscious choice. After a few scrolls through, I
- 34:26Speaker 1: was like, this is a very conscious decision to put
- 34:30Speaker 1: this out there.
- 34:30Speaker 2: That is great.
- 34:31Speaker 1: It has to just be messing with dumb, mostly guys
- 34:34Speaker 1: on the internet.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Especially in this movie, there is a shot.
- 34:38Speaker 3: The poster?
- 34:38Speaker 2: Yeah, the poster. It says, if you're a woman, smile.
- 34:41Speaker 2: You look pretty or something.
- 34:43Speaker 1: I think I wrote it down. Let me see. Oh,
- 34:46Speaker 1: let's see. What the hell did that poster say? It
- 34:49Speaker 1: just says that she walks by in the hallway. You're
- 34:52Speaker 1: prettier when you smile.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Oh, is that what it says? Okay.
- 34:55Speaker 1: I was like, wow. I wonder who came up with
- 34:57Speaker 1: that poster. Yeah. Considering she wrote this movie, and that's
- 35:01Speaker 1: kind of her entire side story. internet business not smiling
- 35:06Speaker 1: for asshole dudes.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Tons of great one-liners like that though.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I feel like that's maybe the well it's what i
- 35:14Speaker 1: go to with any good comedy it's like if there's
- 35:16Speaker 1: something that i really do like as a comedy it's
- 35:20Speaker 1: not always and actually most of the time it's not
- 35:23Speaker 1: the big set pieces or crazy wacky stuff it's just
- 35:27Speaker 1: the weird one-off lines between characters that i'm like okay,
- 35:30Speaker 1: that was good, and wasn't even paused for a laugh moment.
- 35:33Speaker 1: It was so quick. We already went on to the
- 35:35Speaker 1: next thing, but I was like, that's my favorite part
- 35:37Speaker 1: right there.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Well, I love, oh, there were so many lines in
- 35:40Speaker 2: this movie where I was like, nope, that's my favorite.
- 35:42Speaker 1: No, that's my favorite.
- 35:43Speaker 2: And then 30 seconds later, we'd be on to something else. Yeah,
- 35:48Speaker 2: on comedy, I love having those fast quips that, sometimes later,
- 35:54Speaker 2: you're like, wait a minute.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I do want to go back and watch it again
- 35:57Speaker 1: just to catch the other ones. Like, there's so many.
- 36:00Speaker 1: It's so rapid fire that I'm like, there's ones that
- 36:03Speaker 1: have to be, like, getting lost in the shuffle there. So, yeah,
- 36:07Speaker 1: I think I want to go watch it again just
- 36:09Speaker 1: for the one-liners.
- 36:10Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 36:12Speaker 1: So, the other thing I guess we should address is
- 36:15Speaker 1: the fact that, as previously hinted at, it's almost in
- 36:19Speaker 1: a fictional universe. In what way?
- 36:21Speaker 2: It's in its own.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Little, like.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Unrealistic, filtered world where, I mean, the football douches always
- 36:32Speaker 1: wear their uniforms.
- 36:33Speaker 2: I was going to bring that up.
- 36:34Speaker 1: At all times, everywhere.
- 36:36Speaker 2: I was going to mention that.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I was like, it's its own dumb universe that like,
- 36:42Speaker 1: It's just making fun of everybody. So, like, again, it's not...
- 36:45Speaker 1: I didn't know that going in. Like, I kind of
- 36:48Speaker 1: heard it was a little different, but I didn't go
- 36:51Speaker 1: in expecting. Because then later, I think the director said, like,
- 36:54Speaker 1: I want to make my own not-a-teen movie, basically. Like,
- 36:57Speaker 1: that ridiculous level of high school where nobody... really behaves
- 37:01Speaker 1: you know real world type we just take the jokes
- 37:06Speaker 1: and the uh caricatures of these dumb people and just
- 37:09Speaker 1: turn it up to 11 so like that's what they
- 37:11Speaker 1: were going for and like as you get in you
- 37:14Speaker 1: don't notice it like not another teen movie is so
- 37:16Speaker 1: over the top that like immediately you're like oh it's
- 37:18Speaker 1: one of those movies this one eases their way in
- 37:21Speaker 1: and you're just like okay wait it takes a few
- 37:24Speaker 1: times of different things that you're like what are they
- 37:27Speaker 1: doing in this movie right Yeah, it becomes its own
- 37:31Speaker 1: crazy universe that I'm like, all right. Once again, like
- 37:35Speaker 1: the poster in the background. I'm like, that's not normal.
- 37:38Speaker 1: That's them making the jokes within the universe that they
- 37:42Speaker 1: create here. Like, yeah, there's little subtle touches there and
- 37:46Speaker 1: sometimes not so subtle that are kind of awesome.
- 37:49Speaker 2: I mean, I'm trying to figure out what order to
- 37:53Speaker 2: go into because there's so many. So many not real
- 37:57Speaker 2: world scenario or even things that it's like, okay, if
- 38:00Speaker 2: this were a real world situation, this would be a
- 38:03Speaker 2: huge red flag.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Or the fact that, I mean, just basic dialogue. Everybody
- 38:09Speaker 1: curses nonstop. And I'm like, within dumb friend groups, yeah,
- 38:12Speaker 1: most high school movies are like that. But when they're
- 38:14Speaker 1: talking to teachers, when they're giving a public address over
- 38:17Speaker 1: the loudspeaker.
- 38:18Speaker 2: When they're saying it over the morning announcement.
- 38:20Speaker 1: When they're talking to people in front of the whole gym.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Doesn't matter. Just F-bombs right and left. The most god-awful
- 38:28Speaker 1: things will be said and nobody blinks.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Nobody cares.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Nobody thinks anything about it. Even the dumb grown-ups, which
- 38:34Speaker 1: there are only a handful. But, like, they don't ever
- 38:37Speaker 1: respond and are usually also doing it. So, that, again,
- 38:42Speaker 1: it was just sort of like, this is its own
- 38:44Speaker 1: little skewed universe here.
- 38:47Speaker 2: I have to tell you, Mr. G may be one
- 38:50Speaker 2: of my favorite teachers in any movie ever. And just
- 38:53Speaker 2: the fact that his name is Mr. G.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Well, again, that's one of those that I feel like
- 38:59Speaker 1: probably hits different with other people.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Sure.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Because... Initially, I don't think I would have known who
- 39:05Speaker 1: he was, period. Again, they're pulling in a celebrity, I guess. Right.
- 39:10Speaker 1: If you're the right person. I'm assuming neither of us
- 39:12Speaker 1: are that person.
- 39:14Speaker 2: I didn't realize until the end credits rolled who he was.
- 39:16Speaker 1: I mean, I only knew because I wouldn't have known anything.
- 39:20Speaker 1: I would have maybe suspected just because he carries himself
- 39:24Speaker 1: like he's an athlete. Right. But I only knew because
- 39:27Speaker 1: I was like, isn't that guy from Stars on Mars?
- 39:32Speaker 1: which i only half watched again because it was so
- 39:34Speaker 1: ridiculous and they were putting on episodes during the writer's
- 39:38Speaker 1: strike when everything else was old and reruns yeah it
- 39:41Speaker 1: was one of the few new things and i was
- 39:42Speaker 1: like I don't like Ariel Winter. I guess I'll see
- 39:45Speaker 1: what's going on on this. And he was like one
- 39:47Speaker 1: of the main guys. And I was just like, that's
- 39:50Speaker 1: the only thing that clicked in my head. So that's
- 39:52Speaker 1: the only. There's my sports go-to. The guy from Stars
- 39:55Speaker 1: on Mars. And I'm pretty sure he was a football
- 39:58Speaker 1: guy on there. So that's probably why they brought him
- 40:01Speaker 1: in to be this coach slash teacher.
- 40:02Speaker 2: I don't even think I know anything. Oh, wow. I'm
- 40:09Speaker 2: looking at photos from Stars on Mars.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. It's dumb. Like, it is, it's an interesting idea,
- 40:16Speaker 1: but they even, within the context of that idea, didn't
- 40:19Speaker 1: really take it seriously.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:22Speaker 1: It's, I don't have any patience for reality shows, but
- 40:25Speaker 1: I occasionally make exception for celebrity reality shows. Okay. Only
- 40:30Speaker 1: because I like some of the celebrities, so I want
- 40:32Speaker 1: to see them and what they do in this dumb stuff.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Okay, I do remember the promos for this now, and
- 40:38Speaker 2: I remember thinking, well, they're not going to actually be
- 40:40Speaker 2: on Mars. I don't give a shit, so.
- 40:42Speaker 1: That's also true. Occasionally, they would blow things up, which
- 40:46Speaker 1: I was surprised. I don't know how.
- 40:47Speaker 2: I always picture him with a flamethrower.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know how they found a way to
- 40:52Speaker 1: make sure they weren't actually going to blow up celebrities.
- 40:54Speaker 1: But again, usually it's low end. No offense to Ariel Winter.
- 40:58Speaker 1: But the rest of them were like, when half the
- 41:01Speaker 1: people on these, I'm using quotes now, celebrity shows, I
- 41:05Speaker 1: don't know who the hell they are. Because they're always
- 41:07Speaker 1: from other reality shows.
- 41:08Speaker 2: And I'm like, I don't count that.
- 41:09Speaker 1: I don't know who you guys are. So you don't
- 41:12Speaker 1: really count as celebrities.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I know.
- 41:14Speaker 1: That's just cranky old man talking.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:16Speaker 1: New kids watch reality shows just like regular shows. I understand.
- 41:20Speaker 1: I just don't agree with it. Anyway, that's the only
- 41:23Speaker 1: reason I knew who that guy was. Yeah. Stars on Mars.
- 41:27Speaker 1: He is pretty damn funny. And the notes say most
- 41:31Speaker 1: of his lines were improvised, which I totally buy.
- 41:33Speaker 2: I believe that based on the little, they showed you
- 41:36Speaker 2: the extra scenes.
- 41:37Speaker 3: At the end.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Yeah, the end where they're just him just saying whatever.
- 41:41Speaker 1: I feel like there was a lot of that going
- 41:43Speaker 1: on on this set probably. No offense to the writer,
- 41:47Speaker 1: which is also our lead, and the director. Not that
- 41:51Speaker 1: they didn't write an amazing script because it is pretty awesome,
- 41:54Speaker 1: but I feel like there was room for some ad-libbing.
- 41:58Speaker 2: My only critique of the script was there's a couple
- 42:04Speaker 2: of scenes where some of the dialogue goes on a
- 42:07Speaker 2: little too long that I found myself losing interest. But
- 42:11Speaker 2: other than that, I mean, when we get into the
- 42:13Speaker 2: one-liners and the put-downs... Yeah.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Well, and just the commitment to dorkiness. Oh, yeah. As
- 42:21Speaker 1: we got into these two, I was just... Because they're
- 42:23Speaker 1: already like, they're still unpopular. I'm like, look, you're both adorable.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Don't even pretend. And then as you get into it,
- 42:28Speaker 1: you're like, oh, no. You two are a freaking mess.
- 42:32Speaker 1: When they're both trying to talk to the cool girls,
- 42:35Speaker 1: I'm just like, wow, this is painful. And that's coming
- 42:38Speaker 1: from me.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Well, that's... That's where I said this felt realistic because
- 42:42Speaker 2: having been, okay, admittedly not a teenage lesbian, but as
- 42:48Speaker 2: a teenage boy and even as an adult man.
- 42:50Speaker 1: It doesn't get any better.
- 42:54Speaker 2: I still find myself having those conversations and it's like, oh.
- 42:58Speaker 2: here's how I try to start a conversation with a girl. Nope,
- 43:01Speaker 2: that was bad.
- 43:02Speaker 1: And that's why I was like, I don't think it
- 43:05Speaker 1: should be something that only girls, only queer people are
- 43:09Speaker 1: going to talk about it. I was like, I think
- 43:11Speaker 1: it's so well done because it's universal enough that like
- 43:13Speaker 1: that stuff is like side issues that come up later.
- 43:17Speaker 1: But I'm like, for the most part, it's like, these
- 43:19Speaker 1: are our two characters. By the way, they're super dorks.
- 43:22Speaker 1: And I'm like, all right, I can get on board
- 43:24Speaker 1: with this. So yeah, I think that, is so accurately portrayed.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Even if the dialogue itself gets very ridiculous sometimes, the
- 43:36Speaker 1: level of commitment to their dorkiness is pretty impressive.
- 43:40Speaker 2: It's up there. Although I did have an issue with
- 43:44Speaker 2: the opening scene of the movie. She's wearing her arms
- 43:48Speaker 2: in a sling. And then all of a sudden, what
- 43:51Speaker 2: is I assume the next day, no sling.
- 43:54Speaker 1: And they don't address why. I did have that same...
- 43:57Speaker 1: like was she actually when they were shooting yeah and
- 44:00Speaker 1: also she was holding it wrong like why was it
- 44:03Speaker 1: at a weird angle like normally it's up here you
- 44:06Speaker 1: can't see at home but you keep it kind of
- 44:08Speaker 1: parallel where hers was like.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Kind of cranked at a weird.
- 44:12Speaker 1: Sideways angle the whole time like she was purposely trying
- 44:15Speaker 1: to do it I was like is it supposed to
- 44:17Speaker 1: be like that and why is it in a sling
- 44:20Speaker 1: and it leads to the whole weird backstory kind of
- 44:23Speaker 1: but then we never address why it just goes away
- 44:26Speaker 1: or what it was actually from or i don't know
- 44:30Speaker 1: so yeah i agree that that's a weird little all
- 44:32Speaker 1: you had to do was like work in a way
- 44:35Speaker 1: to bridge those two but we don't really get that.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Very strange but yeah i could tell um yeah during
- 44:43Speaker 2: the opening scene where they're in the girl's bedroom and
- 44:45Speaker 2: they're just talking about oh we're gonna get laid and
- 44:48Speaker 2: you know we're finally gonna get.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Laid and It's very 80s comedy.
- 44:52Speaker 2: It was very 80s comedy, but I was like, this
- 44:56Speaker 2: is going to be an interesting take on Superbad, which
- 45:02Speaker 2: I thought was a great movie anyway. And at the time,
- 45:07Speaker 2: the more realistic of the teenagers just trying to get
- 45:11Speaker 2: laid movie. But this one turned out to be Superbad
- 45:16Speaker 2: meets Fight Club.
- 45:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:19Speaker 2: And at first I thought, well, it won't be exactly
- 45:21Speaker 2: like Fight Club. But then as we get into it
- 45:23Speaker 2: and they're building bombs.
- 45:25Speaker 1: It's a little closer, yeah, than you might expect. The
- 45:28Speaker 1: other one I was thinking, and maybe this is a
- 45:30Speaker 1: little too go-to. Because, I guess, two female leads and
- 45:35Speaker 1: one of them is gay. And so, like, Booksmart, it
- 45:37Speaker 1: has a very... Which, that's maybe my other most recent. Like,
- 45:41Speaker 1: I really liked Booksmart. And I thought it was, again,
- 45:44Speaker 1: presenting really interesting characters. And, like, they were dealing with
- 45:47Speaker 1: stuff in their own weird way. It just was a
- 45:50Speaker 1: little more grounded to a regular high school. Not our
- 45:53Speaker 1: fictional crazy world. Still pretty weird.
- 45:56Speaker 2: But, yeah.
- 45:57Speaker 1: So, that was another one that I was like, it's
- 45:59Speaker 1: a little Booksmart. But I'm like, that's not a... That's
- 46:02Speaker 1: not a bad thing. Booksmart was pretty damn smart as
- 46:05Speaker 1: a screenplay itself. I'm fine with pulling from all of
- 46:08Speaker 1: these things.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Oh, sure. No, I got no problem with that.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Which is kind of what I think. It is almost
- 46:12Speaker 1: the joke of like, well, we're going to make fun
- 46:14Speaker 1: of this dumb 80s idea of like, all we want
- 46:17Speaker 1: to do is get laid. So much so that it
- 46:20Speaker 1: seems ridiculous by the time we get to the big
- 46:23Speaker 1: reveal at the end. So wait, even when the girl
- 46:27Speaker 1: was like, the girlfriend's mad, I'm like, yeah, duh. I'm like, right? Like,
- 46:30Speaker 1: first of all, anybody, that's their goal in life. But
- 46:34Speaker 1: especially a dumb high school kid. Like, duh. Of course
- 46:37Speaker 1: they wanted to get laid. So I was just like,
- 46:39Speaker 1: is that what you guys are going to get mad about?
- 46:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:42Speaker 1: It's like, duh. Everybody's looking for that. So, yeah.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Well, it was refreshing to see that, uh, Be focused
- 46:53Speaker 2: on women instead of guys.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Definitely 80s, that's all it was. Guys getting laid, guys
- 46:59Speaker 1: getting laid.
- 46:59Speaker 3: Yeah, whatever.
- 47:01Speaker 2: Women, from what I have been told, have needs too.
- 47:05Speaker 1: I don't know. I think quite a.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Lot, actually.
- 47:11Speaker 1: Depending on who you talk to. I've heard a lot
- 47:13Speaker 1: of very frank discussions on this sort of matter.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Do you have their phone numbers?
- 47:19Speaker 1: Some of them, maybe. I don't know that any of
- 47:21Speaker 1: them want to hear from me. That's true of everyone
- 47:23Speaker 1: at those points.
- 47:24Speaker 2: I'm fine with it.
- 47:26Speaker 1: But I take that into account. I'm like, yeah, I've Again,
- 47:31Speaker 1: you will get some of the most gory details of
- 47:34Speaker 1: things going down from women. Oh, yeah, yeah. Guys just
- 47:38Speaker 1: try to, like, pull the I'm super cool move and, like,
- 47:41Speaker 1: here's what I did and nailed this girl, whatever. But
- 47:44Speaker 1: girls get into the details.
- 47:46Speaker 2: Yeah, excruciating details.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Yep, I have definitely heard some stories. So this does
- 47:53Speaker 1: not surprise me from that angle, but you don't always
- 47:55Speaker 1: see it in films. I kind of liked it from that.
- 47:57Speaker 2: I know a girl who's told me many stories that
- 48:00Speaker 2: end with me going, you know, when you started telling
- 48:02Speaker 2: me this, I thought this is awesome. And then you
- 48:05Speaker 2: got to the end and I'm like, I feel so
- 48:07Speaker 2: bad about this person that I'm never going to meet
- 48:10Speaker 2: that you just told me all about.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Sometimes not even relationship-y, which I've definitely got a lot
- 48:15Speaker 1: of those. But there was one, who shall remain nameless,
- 48:18Speaker 1: that I was around a lot, who would every time
- 48:23Speaker 1: after her trip to the gynecologist would give me the rundown,
- 48:27Speaker 1: very detailed, with specific, sometimes motion specifics. I'm using my
- 48:34Speaker 1: hand now and you don't want to see what I'm doing.
- 48:36Speaker 1: But she would somehow, sometimes describe a finishing move that
- 48:41Speaker 1: the doctor would use that she felt was a little
- 48:43Speaker 1: uncalled for. So, yeah, sometimes I was like, you know,
- 48:47Speaker 1: it's kind of weird that you tell me this, but
- 48:48Speaker 1: I'm okay with it. I like that we're this comfortable
- 48:52Speaker 1: that you can go down that road.
- 48:54Speaker 2: Sure.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not real squeamish when it comes to these discussions.
- 48:59Speaker 1: I'm fine with it.
- 49:00Speaker 2: It's not that I'm squeamish about it necessarily. I just
- 49:04Speaker 2: have to wonder if I just all of a sudden
- 49:10Speaker 2: launched into my own story unprovoked, which most of the
- 49:13Speaker 2: stories I hear are unprovoked.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Yeah. Mine are usually coming this way. That's why I
- 49:19Speaker 1: especially to that person. I usually refer to myself as
- 49:21Speaker 1: her therapist. And I was like, all right, well, we've
- 49:24Speaker 1: done pretty good today. We'll pick back up next time
- 49:27Speaker 1: and see if we can get a little deeper into
- 49:28Speaker 1: this and figure out what's really. Yeah, I tried to.
- 49:32Speaker 1: She wouldn't pay it, but I feel like my time
- 49:35Speaker 1: is worth a lot of money. Nobody agrees. But yeah,
- 49:40Speaker 1: I do like that they very quickly get into that
- 49:43Speaker 1: mode of just like, yeah, we don't care. Right. We're
- 49:47Speaker 1: going to write this the way that we talk to
- 49:49Speaker 1: each other and you guys are along for the ride.
- 49:51Speaker 2: No, I love that. Yeah.
- 49:53Speaker 1: I think that's what we need in general in screenwriting.
- 49:58Speaker 1: That is one I was going to address is definitely
- 50:01Speaker 1: one more reason to, again, most of your Barbie-hating guys
- 50:07Speaker 1: out there are going to feel differently, but I'm like,
- 50:08Speaker 1: this is why you need other people writing film, directing film, like,
- 50:13Speaker 1: creating film, because you get stuff that you're not going
- 50:17Speaker 1: to get any other time, place. When they get to
- 50:20Speaker 1: the scene sitting around, they're like, okay, so who's been raped?
- 50:23Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, a guy's not going to write
- 50:25Speaker 1: that line. Because you know what? They don't think about
- 50:27Speaker 1: that shit. This isn't something that they worry about every
- 50:30Speaker 1: day of their life.
- 50:31Speaker 2: Or if a guy were to write that line, it
- 50:34Speaker 2: would be coming from a totally different.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Yeah, or he'd try to be serious. Like, she's still being,
- 50:39Speaker 1: you know, this is a fun comedy, but I'm going
- 50:41Speaker 1: to put this in here because it's not even a joke.
- 50:44Speaker 1: This is what we deal with every day in our lives.
- 50:46Speaker 1: So I'm just like, that's... impressive that it's just in
- 50:51Speaker 1: there because it needs to be in there.
- 50:53Speaker 2: Well i even loved her follow-up line which was gray
- 50:56Speaker 2: area stuff counts yeah it was like oh because then
- 50:59Speaker 2: everybody was hands up it's like oh i'm a i
- 51:03Speaker 2: was like.
- 51:03Speaker 1: I hate the world yeah it's like hi yeah but
- 51:08Speaker 1: i was just like that's something that you're not gonna
- 51:10Speaker 1: get when you just hand it to the same people
- 51:13Speaker 1: to write movies over and over again you need to
- 51:16Speaker 1: broaden your horizons and bring some more people in because
- 51:19Speaker 1: You get shit that you don't get otherwise. So how
- 51:23Speaker 1: about Hazel? At first, as she popped up, I was like,
- 51:28Speaker 1: is she just going to be their Donnie? Yeah. Because
- 51:30Speaker 1: I kept waiting for her to be the third wheel
- 51:32Speaker 1: and everything was getting with, shut the fuck up, Hazel.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:35Speaker 1: Because it started that way. And I was like, all right,
- 51:37Speaker 1: maybe that's all she's going to be. And then eventually
- 51:39Speaker 1: I was like, no, she is her own full-fledged character.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Hazel is something else.
- 51:42Speaker 1: She's got a lot going on.
- 51:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:46Speaker 2: Especially when we see her home life.
- 51:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Which, again, like, once you get into these
- 51:52Speaker 1: people and their weird backstories, it's like, I do like
- 51:55Speaker 1: that sometimes it is just teenage drama. When we get
- 51:58Speaker 1: into the crazy girl, and she's just like, her new
- 52:01Speaker 1: stepdad wants to have movie night. And that is making
- 52:05Speaker 1: her flip the fuck out.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Well, I.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Wait, what is your problem?
- 52:09Speaker 2: Well, I'm like, what else is going on?
- 52:11Speaker 1: I know, I kept waiting for the reveal where he's
- 52:13Speaker 1: doing something creepy.
- 52:14Speaker 2: Because it came up right after the who's been raped. Yeah,
- 52:18Speaker 2: I know.
- 52:18Speaker 1: And I kept waiting for that. And I was like, no,
- 52:21Speaker 1: she's just being a super dramatic teenager, isn't she?
- 52:25Speaker 2: Well, I do want to talk more about Hazel. But
- 52:28Speaker 2: that character from the beginning where she was like, I
- 52:30Speaker 2: can finally kill my stepdad.
- 52:31Speaker 1: I know. And I was like, all right, if there's reason,
- 52:34Speaker 1: go to town.
- 52:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:36Speaker 1: Yeah, as we get into it, it's like, God, just
- 52:39Speaker 1: leave me alone. It's like, oh, no, she's just a
- 52:41Speaker 1: dumb teenager. Okay, okay, good to know.
- 52:45Speaker 2: Hazel, though, yeah, when she first appeared, I thought she's, yeah,
- 52:49Speaker 2: like you said, the third wheel, the dorky tag-along person.
- 52:53Speaker 2: But no, she's got her own things going on. The
- 52:56Speaker 2: fact that she just so casually mentions that it won't
- 53:00Speaker 2: even be a problem for her to build a bomb
- 53:03Speaker 2: to stick under dudes' cars.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Well, I do like that, oh, yeah, let's do terrorism.
- 53:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:09Speaker 1: And then, I mean, she did say those words. Now,
- 53:13Speaker 1: if you're not picking up on the way that she's
- 53:15Speaker 1: saying those words, which I guess Hazel wasn't because she
- 53:17Speaker 1: built a bomb.
- 53:19Speaker 2: But back to the, and again, back to the football player,
- 53:22Speaker 2: when Hazel comes in and she finds out that her
- 53:24Speaker 2: mom's banging the head guy who walks in wearing only
- 53:28Speaker 2: his jock strap and his shoulder pads.
- 53:30Speaker 1: And still the shoulder pads.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Still the shoulder pads.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Because never are they fully out of their uniforms. But
- 53:35Speaker 1: even when having sex. Well, see, that's another one of
- 53:39Speaker 1: those that's like such a weird detached world. Like the
- 53:42Speaker 1: way that all the football guys behave. I'm like, okay,
- 53:46Speaker 1: in the real world, if you acted like these guys,
- 53:48Speaker 1: you would get your ass kicked. Like in the real world,
- 53:52Speaker 1: none of these things they're doing and saying make any
- 53:55Speaker 1: sense or seem like any real dude on a football team.
- 54:00Speaker 1: But within the context of this movie, it's hilarious and
- 54:04Speaker 1: I love it.
- 54:04Speaker 2: And we talked about caricatures earlier. Oh, yeah.
- 54:07Speaker 1: He is such a caricature.
- 54:09Speaker 2: Every little thing that happens to the football team, the
- 54:13Speaker 2: teachers and the principals are like, why are you treating
- 54:16Speaker 2: our football players like this?
- 54:19Speaker 1: The other background thing that was alternate universe, just him
- 54:24Speaker 1: shirtless on all the posters. Like the whole school revolved
- 54:29Speaker 1: around him and him as the sex object that he is.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Sure.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Because every one of them was him shirtless. And I
- 54:35Speaker 1: was just like, yeah, I would hope a real school
- 54:38Speaker 1: would have problems with this. I don't know anymore. Weird
- 54:41Speaker 1: stuff goes on.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Well, the fact that parents at the football game are
- 54:46Speaker 2: holding up cutouts.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Of him shirtless. Cutouts of him shirtless. Like, this should
- 54:50Speaker 1: be red flags all over the place, but nobody seems
- 54:53Speaker 1: to even blink.
- 54:54Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Yep. Alternate crazy world, and I like it.
- 54:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that at his core... Was it Jeff
- 55:02Speaker 2: or Jeffrey? Was that the.
- 55:04Speaker 1: The other guy?
- 55:05Speaker 2: Well, the main football guy.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:07Speaker 2: At his core, he's such a little bitch.
- 55:10Speaker 1: I mean, nothing puts an imperfective more than his car accident.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Dink!
- 55:17Speaker 1: Oh, God. I was just like, once again, at that point,
- 55:21Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, this is not a normal movie.
- 55:23Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 55:24Speaker 1: And him screaming up to the sky, why? Or any
- 55:29Speaker 1: number of alternate takes as we got to the end.
- 55:31Speaker 1: But I was just like, yeah, this is a crazy,
- 55:35Speaker 1: over-the-top movie, and I dig it.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Well, there's a scene where the girls, the first three girls...
- 55:41Speaker 2: They come up with the idea. Or they've already announced,
- 55:44Speaker 2: I think, the fight club or defense class, however you
- 55:46Speaker 2: want to call it. But they're in the bleachers and
- 55:48Speaker 2: they're talking. And if you look in the background, you
- 55:51Speaker 2: can see him walk onto the field with crutches. And
- 55:54Speaker 2: then throws them away.
- 55:56Speaker 1: Because everybody knows this is bullshit. But nobody.
- 56:01Speaker 2: God, what a movie.
- 56:02Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody questions it. Like, every one of the teachers
- 56:05Speaker 1: is just like, oh, they're so worried about him.
- 56:08Speaker 6: And.
- 56:09Speaker 1: The fact that they might even be taking attention away
- 56:11Speaker 1: from the football team. Right. And just like, well then,
- 56:15Speaker 1: this is how school works, actually. That's pretty close.
- 56:17Speaker 2: That's true.
- 56:18Speaker 1: I've seen a little more of a Matt that I'm
- 56:20Speaker 1: okay with, but yeah. But yeah, most of the rest
- 56:24Speaker 1: of this time watching the movie was just me going,
- 56:27Speaker 1: where do I know her from? Wait, where do I
- 56:29Speaker 1: know her from? Everybody in the cast, I was like,
- 56:32Speaker 1: damn it. I know I've seen them in something in
- 56:34Speaker 1: my brain. useless as it is most of the time now.
- 56:37Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, so after this, I'm going to just
- 56:39Speaker 1: spend an hour on IMDb going, oh, that one. So
- 56:43Speaker 1: most of them, that's why.
- 56:45Speaker 2: You know, we're talking about how different of a movie
- 56:48Speaker 2: it is. The fact that one of the characters fully
- 56:50Speaker 2: admits that, yeah, my entire identity is built around her.
- 56:56Speaker 1: Oh, she's the one. I knew who she was, but
- 56:59Speaker 1: I was just like, the entire movie going... Oh, my God.
- 57:03Speaker 1: There has to be cloning. Like, she is so frighteningly
- 57:07Speaker 1: exactly her mother. It is disturbing. Like, she is just
- 57:12Speaker 1: a cookie cutter of Cindy Crawford. Oh, yeah.
- 57:15Speaker 2: Oh, very much so.
- 57:15Speaker 1: Somehow they took the mole out of the process. But
- 57:18Speaker 1: other than that, like, 100% looks exactly like her. like
- 57:23Speaker 1: decades ago well yeah not that she's changed like her
- 57:26Speaker 1: mother looks frighteningly exactly the same now.
- 57:30Speaker 2: She's what you call timeless well and she has magic
- 57:32Speaker 2: melons so you know if you watch that infomercial it's
- 57:36Speaker 2: those magic melons that do it yeah they're.
- 57:38Speaker 1: French that's that's what makes them extra magic french magic melons.
- 57:43Speaker 2: Sure yeah a lot of a lot of these kids
- 57:48Speaker 2: look very familiar but Well.
- 57:49Speaker 1: That was our other lead, too. I was like, I
- 57:52Speaker 1: know I've seen her. And then I get into, like,
- 57:55Speaker 1: once I left, I was like, Iowa Deberry? She has
- 58:00Speaker 1: a very complicated name for someone who can't pronounce anyone's name.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:03Speaker 1: But I was like, oh, I've just seen her on
- 58:06Speaker 1: every award show. Yeah. I haven't watched The Bear. I
- 58:10Speaker 1: want to watch The Bear. I'm like, hey, look, it's Lip.
- 58:12Speaker 1: And now he's running a restaurant.
- 58:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:15Speaker 1: Little did I know it was like going to sweep every,
- 58:18Speaker 1: like this last season of awards, like the bear and
- 58:22Speaker 1: those actors took home freaking everything. So like she won
- 58:26Speaker 1: a Golden Globe. She won an Emmy. She won a
- 58:29Speaker 1: Critics' Choice Award. Like I've watched her give speeches over
- 58:32Speaker 1: and over over the last like two months. And then
- 58:34Speaker 1: I was like, oh, no wonder I know. Like no
- 58:36Speaker 1: wonder she's so damn familiar. I've just watched her on
- 58:39Speaker 1: every stage. Now I guess I have to watch the bear.
- 58:41Speaker 2: She's, the bear is really good.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:44Speaker 2: Well, And she's great on it. And she is a
- 58:46Speaker 2: very no-nonsense, very intense character.
- 58:50Speaker 1: And just in her presentation as herself on stage, she
- 58:55Speaker 1: seems super funny. And so again, the fact that this
- 58:59Speaker 1: is what we get from her on screen, I'm like, oh, well, yeah,
- 59:02Speaker 1: it all makes sense. And again, makes me now really
- 59:04Speaker 1: want to watch The Bear, which I want to anyway.
- 59:06Speaker 2: In The Bear, she is very lesbian. Nielsen funny in
- 59:12Speaker 2: that she comes off so dry and so serious and
- 59:17Speaker 2: she's saying funny lines but she's not saying them in
- 59:19Speaker 2: a way that is funny and that's what makes it
- 59:22Speaker 2: funny if you.
- 59:23Speaker 1: Know That's its own, yeah, that's its own brand of humor.
- 59:27Speaker 2: Like Leslie Nielsen.
- 59:28Speaker 1: Well, it's also like she's definitely the straight character, no
- 59:32Speaker 1: pun intended, in this movie. But I'm like, because, you know,
- 59:36Speaker 1: Rachel says the most outlandish foul-mouthed shit, and she's just
- 59:41Speaker 1: got to be there to be like, but no. She's
- 59:43Speaker 1: just got to be the voice of reason most of
- 59:46Speaker 1: the time, except it never works out, and she goes
- 59:48Speaker 1: along with her anyway and gets in trouble. But she's
- 59:50Speaker 1: always like, the most level-headed out of a bunch of
- 59:53Speaker 1: crazy people so like she is usually the one trying
- 59:57Speaker 1: to bring down the insanity but it doesn't work so
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: but yeah that still kind of works as her emo
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: in this too and then havana rose lou the whole
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: time like isabel i was just like oh yes yes
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: you're right she's super cute but i was like i
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: know i've seen her before I talked about it on
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: the horror show not long ago. No Exit is the
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: movie just like a year or two ago that she's
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: in and she is the lead. And it is sort
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: of horror, sort of thriller, and it's really good. And again,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: she was great in it. So that's why I was like,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: I remember after that movie going, have I seen this
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: girl before? Because she's great. And like, no, she's been
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: in other stuff, but I hadn't really seen much else.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: But No Exit was the one I was thinking of
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: as I watched this movie. I was like, I know
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: I've just seen her in something. And, yeah, so, watch
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: No Ex. She's great.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Yeah, No Ex I haven't seen. I've heard of the
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: other stuff. I'm not familiar with it.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I wasn't all that familiar with the rest. But
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: then I got to that one. I was like, nope,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: that's it. I remember looking her up afterwards going, that's
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: exactly why. I knew I'd seen her and stuff. But, yeah,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: most of the time I was just sitting there going,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: I know that one. I know that one. Where do
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: I know her from? Why does she look like a clone? Right.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: This is kind of creepy. Yeah. And what the hell
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: is Punky Johnson doing here? Her one scene, their babysitter,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: the trailer lady.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: Oh, that's who that was.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: I got to the end. I was like, I think
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: that's who that was. She was covered up mostly, so
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: you couldn't tell. I'm pretty sure that's her.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: When she pops out of the trailer, I'm like, oh,
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: my God. I might get in trouble for this, but
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: I was like, oh, my God, they got Whoopi Goldberg.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: And then the moment she starts speaking.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: There was definitely a look that, yeah, I was like,
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: I don't think so. But yeah, it kind of looks
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: like how she dresses most of the time.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: Well, now that I'm looking at pictures of her, yeah.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: So my apologies to Ms. Johnson. I love that the
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: school seems to be okay with the rival school murdering
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: the players of their team.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: That's... Maybe as we got towards the end, I was like, yeah,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: if ever there's something that is just out in its
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: own little realm where in this world that we've established,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: everybody's just kind of accepted the fact that every couple
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: of decades they murder someone and that's just what happens.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: So just stay inside that night. Don't worry about it.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: You'll be okay. So I was like, what a weird
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: world that we've put together.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: In this movie. Yeah. I mean, there's other things, too,
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: where I'm like, again, real world. Again, one of my
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: many favorite lines, but they throw the fruit cocktail at
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: the goth kid. And he's like, I wasn't going to
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: do it, but this is a last resort. And then
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: you see his notebook. plan to bomb the.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: School again something that they don't joke about much these
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: days so that was already pushing the envelope like oh
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: you're gonna piss somebody.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: Off but it was it was funny it was.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: And especially by the end as we come back around
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: there was a sort of payoff to that yeah yeah
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: it was those little like yeah the the lines along
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: the way the uh constantly catching the jock and how
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: dumb he is when it's just like i'm i'm helping
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: her with her taxes didn't you aren't you an eighth
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: grade math yeah it's like shut up those are the
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: little jokes that i was like yeah this is what
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: makes the movie it's like as much fun as i'm
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: having with all of this the little one-liners aren't you
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: eighth grade math.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Well and and the scene when mr g uh feels
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: like he's been betrayed by the girls and he gives
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: this big impassioned speech about how You know, I was
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: actually your ally and this and that. And the next
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: thing you see is him writing on the chalkboard, feminism,
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: why we should probably never have a woman president.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: Well, I liked that earlier when it was like, feminism,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: who came up with it? And then it's like, look,
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Gloria Steinem, a man, some other chick.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: That's what it was.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: Something like that. Some other lady.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: The thing about the presidents, I think, was women are evil. Yeah.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: That was his closing point. People keep telling me that's
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: not the case, but his speech was fun. I really
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: liked her little, at the very beginning, her little ramble
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: of how her life is going to go because she's
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: not ever going to get laid.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: She's going to have to marry.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: She goes into that whole huge story.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: I'm going to marry this other gay student and he's
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: going to become a preacher, but we'll both be closeted.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: Please come visit us on Sunday.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: She's being so dramatic at that point, like almost uncharacteristically
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: that I'm like, is she serious? Or is she just
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: being goofy? Because Rachel's not taking any of it. She's like, whatever. Yeah.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: She's just like, shut up. Here she comes. She just
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: doesn't even acknowledge how crazy and overdramatic that whole story is.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: I was like, that's another final.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: I think that's what I liked about this movie. There
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: is a plot, there is a through line, but it's
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: all the little pieces that come together that I think
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: was what I really enjoyed most about it.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: So here's another. I definitely wanted to hit, again, as
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: a bigger question, because there's a decent amount of music,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: but there are two very key songs, both of which
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: are older. So now I'm asking... do we get to
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: a point where it's no, like it comes back around
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: full circle and it's not used ironically because when either
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: like total eclipse of the heart, I think is an
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: amazing song. Fantastic. But is at this point almost its
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: own punchline when you use it, especially in a comedy
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: and kind of same thing. And like Avril is for
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: a while became her own joke. Like she was a
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: punchline coming out of her era very quickly. She became
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: a punchline and, And through the early 2000s, that would
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: have been an ironic joke. Sure. But we've come so
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: long since then. I'm like, is it a whole new
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: generation that doesn't remember it enough for it to be irony?
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: And now they're just using songs like, hey, I like
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: this song.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: That could very well be.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: Is that the case now? Where if you're a kid
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: watching this that actually is in high school... You might
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: remember those songs because they came up on your feed
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: somewhere along the way if you're listening to oldies. But, like,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: it doesn't even register that it would be a joke. Whereas,
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: if you're old and you remember them the first time,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: you're like, ha ha, look, they're playing Avril Lavigne.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: That's hilarious.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Like, is everyone else reading it like that?
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: That's a good point. Because I did think, oh, Avril Lavigne.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: Hilarious.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I do think Complicated's a pretty good song. This is
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: a good song. She's made some questionable decisions over the years.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: She has. Mostly her marriage. But that aside, I was
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: just like, that whole first run of her, I was like,
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: she's not bad. And what she's doing is very calculated.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: I'm not the pop princess thing. So like, it was
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: the flip side of that. Now, granted, it was equally
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: as corporate run and manipulated as the other side. So
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: I was like, it wasn't honest, really. But at the
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: same time, I was like, I just like that there's
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: another option that she's like, pretending at least that she's
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: a skateboard kid and she's into punk rock. Her songs
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: are equally as poppy as the other side, but it's
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: all presentation. So I was like, I appreciated that in
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: its own weird way when it.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Happened the first time. Yeah, and also the older I
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: get and I look at situations like that and especially
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: how young she was.
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I'm sure she didn't have a lot to do with
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: all that.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: It's hard for me to place blame on her or
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: even to say, Oh, she shouldn't have done that because,
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: you know, 16, you're trying to come up with your
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: own identity.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: And I appreciated what she was doing, that like there
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: probably were kids out there, young girls who did feel
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: that way and like didn't have anybody that was the order.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: So again, even if it was. somewhat manipulated. And again,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: we're back to the monkeys at this point. If, if
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: it's created by a corporation to appeal to the kids,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: like whatever, if you still appreciate it, if you're still
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: connecting with it because it's what you are interested in,
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: even if it was disingenuous from the beginning, you're still
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: bringing you to it and your interest to it. So
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: like it's legit from your perspective, really. So yeah, I
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: don't know. I just thought that was interesting that they're
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: so far gone at this point. definitely freaking total eclipse
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: of the heart i'm just like that's so old now
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: that like we've had a couple of generations cycle through
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: oh yeah like would have no context for its original
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: run so yeah you can kind of just do whatever
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: with it. And depending on how old your audience is,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: it may not land the same.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: I don't know. That's a good point. That's a really
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: good point actually, because yeah, we've put, We've put meaning
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: on those songs because we've seen them in other movies,
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: but the younger audience who may have never even heard
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: the song at all has no context to it.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: Or doesn't understand, speaking of an insane world, the insane
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: world of Jim Steinman.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: Well, yeah.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: Like, I appreciate on a level that is... not normal
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: but also acknowledge that it is insane and over the
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: top and if everybody was if anybody was ever tapped
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: into overdoing dramatic teenage thinking yeah it's jim steinman oh
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: yeah every one of his songs is like i don't
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: know how you distilled it especially because you weren't a
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: teenager when he wrote this he was easily in his
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: mid-20s when he started and went on and was like well,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: an old man when he was still writing these insane,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: weird teenage songs that were still caught up in that
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: bullshit world in an amazing way, in a distilled way.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: And I'm like, I don't even know how you write
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: something like this. It is so insane and amazing at
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: the same time.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: Well, if you ever take the lyrics from beginning to
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: end from Paradise by the Dashboard Light, That is a
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: teenage boy's thought process that a mature man of 25
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: or whatever should be starting to grow away from. I
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: would think, okay, I'm going to recall this. I'm going
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: to recall what it was like to be 17 because
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: they explicitly stay in the songs that they were only 17.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: But I'm going to write like that. I'm going to
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: write in that mindset. I would still think there'd be
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: that little piece of you that'd be like, I can't
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: put that in.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Or even if you did, like when you write that
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: stuff as an older person, you put perspective on it.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: And without even trying, probably, you reflect on the state
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: of mind that you were in when you were a
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: dumb kid. His never had that. They were never self-aware.
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: No.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: Even when he was writing stuff much older, they were never, again,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: it was never ironic. It was always, I am knee
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: deep in this insane, angsty teenage world, and everything is
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: so heightened. That's exactly how his songs feel. And they're amazing,
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: but it doesn't bear any resemblance to the real world,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: which is maybe why it fits so well in this movie. Yeah,
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: that's true. So, yeah, I don't know. There's so many
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: levels to that that I was just like, this is
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: weird and I like it, but it's all weird.
- 1:11:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: Jim Steinman. Oh, man. What a piece of work.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: It's so easy to go back and forth on Jim
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Steinman because on the one hand, you're like, genius. On
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: the other hand, you're like, Weirdo.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: 11-year-old. Yeah. How do you write this bullshit? But, like,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: it's followed up with this line that is amazing. So... Yeah.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: Surf's up and so am I. I'm like, dude, how
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: old are you? You are ridiculous. I listened to that
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: the other day. I was like, I forgot about that one. Fuck.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: It's just... Oh, so ridiculous. So... Again. A very separate
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: little world. Oh, yeah.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: But I like that. I like watching movies where this world...
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: It's like this world doesn't exist. This is not how
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: it is. But it's close to our world.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: It's close enough that we can almost use that to
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: make the point.
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: We can... extreme everything that we need to to make
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: fun of it but at the same time it's sort
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: of nailing what we're going for here which we definitely
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: get a lot of that in this movie that it's
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: unrealistic and yet is making its point maybe more so
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: by turning everything up to 11 it's like oh this
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: is so silly oh but is it yeah is it
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: or is it just a shade over the top from
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: how the world really is and like sometimes I'm like
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: yeah kind of kind of yeah Like the, again, if
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: we're getting into, oh shit, the Hazel fight for God's sake.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: I was just like, once it started, I was like, okay,
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: isn't she the one that said like she was into
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: Taekwondo or something? So I'm like, all right, she can
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: hold her own. Dude, like by the finishing move, it's
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: like Jesus. Why did we just have to watch Hazel
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: get beaten to a pulp?
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: And what teacher is going to allow that?
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: Well, the fact that, again, in the alternate universe where
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: they keep this dude in a cage.
- 1:13:58Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: I guess that was theatrics for the pep rally, kind of.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Maybe not.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: There is a scene in the first scene in the classroom.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: You see it for like a split second. And I'm like,
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: why is this dude in a cage? And they never
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: address it until we get to the next scene.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: But yeah, that was painful, literally.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: Brutal. I'm just like, geez. Why is this okay? Which, again,
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: it's not that is the point. It's like this is
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: a little over the top, and yet grown-ups don't have
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: a problem with it. They're just like, yep, have fun
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: with your pep rally.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: Beat the hell out of that girl. It's fine.
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: I just thought of this just, again, I guess maybe
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: alternate reality, but where the kid is calling, the football
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: player is calling the juvie sinners. To get records of
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: these girls and the camera pans out and he's got
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: the yellow pages, but he's on a smartphone, which means
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: he doesn't need the yellow pages anymore. And I don't
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: know if they put that much thought into the joke.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: Well, again, who would even know what the hell a
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: yellow page is?
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: Well, okay, good point. Maybe they did put that much
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: thought into it.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: So much so that here's a real world example. They
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: handed out the, like, now they make the miniature version
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: of the phone books that they still keep throwing on
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: your porch for some reason. I'm like, how many old
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: people still pick this up? But my joke is, and
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: it's not a joke, the person down the way from
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: me It sat there for weeks because I don't think
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: they go in and out that door, but it's not
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: like their life was hurting without it.
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: It sat there and got rained on and waterlogged and
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: just became a puddle of pulp and grossness. And I
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: was just like, yeah, they're really not going to be
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: upset when they find out. They're going to have to
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: get a snow shovel to scrape it up, but they're
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: not upset because nobody uses those anymore. Why are you
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: printing them?
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: As a child, I used to get so excited when
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: the new phone books came out.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: There's a joke for old people.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: And a while ago, as an adult, the phone book
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: arrived on my front porch. I looked at it and
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: just went inside the house. And left it there so
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: long that when I finally said, you know what, I
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: should probably bring that in, the next day a new
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: phone book arrived.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: So you are that guy.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: So part of me is wondering if they were waiting
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: until I took the old phone book in. I don't know.
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: But either way, I got two new phone books in
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: the span of two days. I think I just threw
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: them both away.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: I don't get it. No. Ugh. But yeah, what? Just
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: all of these random things. Again, things that wouldn't be
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: okay in the real world. When they go to the
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: big game and they bring out, it's time for the cheerleaders!
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: And they just dump water on it. I'm like, wait,
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: this is okay? You guys are, alright, whatever. Or the
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: freaking car wash where they're selling their underwear.
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: I'm like.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: Wait, is this sanctioned by the school?
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Now, to be fair with that last one, I've been
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: out of high school for a long time, so I
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: don't know what's acceptable as a fundraiser anymore.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe it's got to that point. That's
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: the other thing that I kind of wonder in general
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: that I am so far removed from. Because I watch...
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: Now they are making a lot of high school movies
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: for people of the high school age. And in them...
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: this is one of them with, with Walker writings, notwithstanding,
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: they're just sort of accepted and everybody knows. And like
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: within the, cause again, you see the other guy that's
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: like the, the, the drama club kid that like, everybody's
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: like football guys are like, Hey, what's going on buddy?
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: And like, and I was like, that's awesome. And wait,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: does that happen? I was like, has the world changed?
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: I know. I was like, ideally that is what we
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: want for the world. But I was like, has it
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: really been that long?
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: That's okay. You know, that's not the world. I grew
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: up in high school that, and I mean, not to
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: make a big deal of this, but yeah, you're a
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: few years ahead of me.
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: But, uh, the high school that we went to, that
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: was not, I mean, when I see that movies and TVs,
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: TV shows now where they have, they talk, the gay
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: kids talk about, Oh, we've got, yeah. For lack of
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: a better term, gay club. I, Or just the fact
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: that they're openly gay. I'm not trying to roughly bite
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: feathers with that. I just don't know what they call it. Yeah,
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: just the fact that they're openly gay. I'm like, well,
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: clearly that's going to become a plot point later. And
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: it's never brought up. And I hope it's because it's accepted. Yeah,
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: because it should be normalized.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: But they're still like the decades ago version of my brain.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: that like way yeah like it still just doesn't fully
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: process because i'm like not when i go to the
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: like the reality of the world revolving around the football
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: team like no no oh i was there i was
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: in a fucking football heavy school and like The entire
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: school year revolved around football, and the team was like
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: their own little glorious group of people that kind of
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: did go by different rules than everybody else. And literally,
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: to bring it up, on the... I'm trying to remember
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: what the reasoning, there were specific days where the team
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: could wear their jersey to class. Right. And like, there
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: was otherwise a pretty strict stress policy. But like, if
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: you're on the football team, nope, you could wear your
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: jersey and that was your uniform all day, wear it around.
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: And I was like, yeah, this is its own weird
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: little world too. So like, I definitely was not in
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: a world where it would have been okay to be
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: openly gay. Now, statistically speaking, it had to be going on.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: It had to be going on.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: There were plenty of guys there, so I'm sure many
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: of them were. But yeah, it's not something you would
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: have discussed for many reasons.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: With the advent of social media, I see tons of
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: classmates that I'm like, no kidding. Yeah, because... I would
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: have never gotten that impression from you for a lot
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: of reasons.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: So I don't know. Like I, I almost want to,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: cause I at least have family kids that are in
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: school now. So I kind of want to go, so
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: is it cool? Like, does everybody talk about it? Cause
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: I don't have a window into current day high school
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: kids and I'm fine with that. I was glad to
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: get away from it the first time, but that one,
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: when I see it, like, In TV shows and movies now,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: it's usually pretty open, even if there's still hazing going on,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: which I'm sure there is.
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: There always will be.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: Because people suck. Well, and now there's a whole new
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: level of you can not only just beat the hell
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: out of them physically, but you can go online and
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: do horrible things. So it is a whole extra level
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: that I didn't have to deal with, so I'm not
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: upset that I missed that either. But, yeah, I do
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: wonder how... how much and does it vary school to
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: school state to state I'm sure it varies quite a
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: bit depending on which areas you're in so yeah I
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: don't know all of that is interesting watching it in
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: this because it is so much so even though they're
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: still dorks and nobody likes them it's not because they're
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: gay like so like I like that part of this
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: world yeah they're like no they like that guy like
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: he's very openly gay everybody thinks.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: He's awesome we suck even when the principal calls the
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: the two ugly non-talented queers to.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: The office and i was like no no no none
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: of this is true except the queer part but you're
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: both adorable and super talented so let's be.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: Real like yeah.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: But yeah i that was and also interesting part of
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: it is just sort of seeing this on one hand
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: sort of realistic and on another like an alternate version
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: of certainly how i ever viewed anything so I'm kind
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: of curious how that goes these days. Not enough to
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: go to high school, though. Do not want to relive
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: those times.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: I don't want to. I mean, I suppose I could
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: get a job as the wise janitor at a high school.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: The guy who has to keep repainting their locker.
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: Oh, that poor guy.
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: I like that they just, by the second or third time,
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: she's like, you know what to do. They don't even
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: talk about it anymore. She just points at it. You
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: know what to do. oh this movie's pretty awesome this
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: movie's great i.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: Say highly highly recommended the what little bit of uh
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: promotional material i saw that before the movie did not
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: prepare me at all no what i was getting.
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: Into again i i knew i at least knew rachel
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: so like again i figured it was going to be
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: definitely you got the impression it was going to be
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: a little brutal and kind of foul mouth but again
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: that's kind of how she rolls i get that but
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: um yeah i did not pick up on the alternate
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: universe version of it well no clearly not nor the
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: uh the commentary that's going on so they just did
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: a lot of um quick shots of them beating the
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: hell out of each other in the trailer i feel
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: like yeah so i got a i got a good
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: amount of that that i'm like well i'm assuming there's
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: gonna be some some punching and many types of brutalities
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: going on. So much. I do like that very first
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: shot of like, oh, I can hit you. It just
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: nails her. And the whole rest of the movie, she
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: still has the like, it continues to like downgrade a little.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: But even that last scene, she's still got black eyes.
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: I love that. All of these girls had nasty bruises
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: and cuts.
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: Which usually is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Any girl with a scar is like, oh, I'm on
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: board with this chick. I do like that the cheerleaders
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: were walking around a little cocky because they'd kick somebody's ass.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: And I'm like, good for you.
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: Well, that was the thing, too. It wasn't just the
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: nerdy outcast girls. It was you had the cheerleaders. You
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: had the brainiacs. You had the losers. You had the
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: psycho with the, I'm going to kill my stepdad.
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: Which.
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: And whatever category Hazel fits into.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. She is her own crazy person. But yeah,
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: because I so didn't expect it coming from Kill My
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: Stepdad Girl, because she's the most stoner of the group. Right. Like,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: she's coming in going, well, obviously she's going to play
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: that character.
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: Nope.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: I was like, again, just mixing it up. Like, just
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: when you think you've got a handle on these crazy characters. Nope.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: She is definitely a little different than I expected. Oh, yeah.
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: Ugh.
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: But yeah, by the time you get to the finale, like,
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: but I mean, the least crazy thing is that they've
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: loaded up the sprinklers with pineapple juice. That is like
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: would be ridiculous and over the top in a different movie.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: In this movie, by the time they're just a bloodbath,
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: they beat the hell out of the other team. So
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: much so.
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: That they're murdering. Well, even her comment of, no, I
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: didn't kill him.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: No, that guy right there. You killed that guy. Like, oh.
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: She runs him through with a goddamn sword.
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: She's like, I'm pretty sure you killed that guy. I
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: was like, once again, they're taking this very alternate universe casual.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: There are no cops that show up. No one faces
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: any repercussions for all the murder.
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: There's no fuss from the stands. Yeah, they just.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: Well, and also, like, the other side just flat out
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: didn't show. Yeah. They're like, well, they're murdering somebody, so
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: we're staying home. Like, just an entire empty stadium. Yeah.
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: Except for the idiots on their side.
- 1:26:00Speaker 3: Insanity.
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: I did think it was funny before we got to
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: that one that like the mascot that was on the
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: posters did have a sword I was like I feel
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: like now they probably would I mean some of the
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: older ones but again over the years they've gotten in
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: trouble for all of the older mascots so I'm like
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: I feel like even now if you were a cavalier
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: they'd probably take the sword out of his hand like
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: they'd safe make it a little safer and he'd just
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: hold a shield all the time yeah So the fact
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: that this Viking dog or whatever it was.
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: I'm trying to remember what the mascots were.
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: I thought it was Vikings.
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: It was Vikings.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: Because there is a poster that's like, get horny. I
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: was like, once again, alternate universe. I hope somebody in
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: a real school would have problems with that. Probably not
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: at this point.
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: But yeah, they were Vikings. But for some reason, it
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: was a dog? I don't know. But yeah, I was like, oh, well,
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: that sword came into play eventually.
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: I think it was the Vikings and the golden ferrets.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: The golden ferrets. I do like as they came striding
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: on the field, I was like, well, golden ferrets. That's special.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: Even just, I'm trying to remember, is this in the
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: movie or just my life? Because as I was writing
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: some random stuff down, it also says, As I've gotten older,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: it's just gotten more sad.
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah, actually, that could just be me.
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: I feel like it's something that one of them said.
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: I hope so.
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: I also feel like that's, I mean, that definitely is
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: my status, but.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: It might have been something Mr. G said.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: I feel like it's, yeah, I feel like it ties
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: into the plot as we get to the end of
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: it there. But I also was just like, no, that
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: was just me yesterday.
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: That's true about everything at this point. The more I
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: think about it, it's all gotten more sad. Except when
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: watching this movie. I'm pretty thrilled with this movie.
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: I enjoyed it. I don't have a rating system in
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: place to rank it.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: I usually don't go for those anyway.
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: It would get most of the whatevers out of however
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: many it's allowed.
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: Definitely. And again, for a Modern era comedy that I
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: rarely seek out anymore because most of them are really dumb.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: There's a few other ones lately I've heard decent things about.
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: So that is what brought me to this. I had
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: several people that I've seen online that I... normally would
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: be a little more willing to listen to their opinion.
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: And then there was at least one show that I
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: was listening to that they put it on their top
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: ten for the year. Oh, really? Which I was like,
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: for a comedy period, when normally it's nothing but your
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: Oscar bait kind of shows, like movies. And I'm just like,
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: the fact that a comedy... Let alone this, what I
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: know of it as a silly, brutal comedy. And I
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: was like, that says something about it. So I definitely
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: want to seek this out. So yeah, that is another reason.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: I was like, we definitely need to watch this.
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: Well, I just saw on Wikipedia that it actually turned
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: a profit.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: Which is, again, an important thing when trying to get
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: films made by women.
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. It is. If nothing else that came out
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: of Barbie is like, well, now they'll at least let some.
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: Because if it would have tanked, it's so impossible to
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: get something through as a female director anyway, or writer,
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: or actress that's fronting a movie anymore. It's such a
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: fight that like... I really.
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: Thought that Wonder Woman would change all that. That we
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: would see just like a slew of really good, not
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: that women can't make good movies, but traditionally they haven't
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: been allowed to make them.
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not given before. Chance the fucking Dean, yeah.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: Because before, if you weren't Penny Marshall, you weren't making
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: a blockbuster movie.
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: And even then, she knocked out several big ones and
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: then a bunch of other ones nobody even remembers.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: Unfortunately, that was the first person I could think of.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, there's been a handful that have broken
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: through and had some decent-sized budgets and brought in good actors,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: but it's pretty minimal still.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: Yeah. But I really did think Wonder Woman was going
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: to change that.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: It didn't help. 1984. Did you watch that one?
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: Yeah. I have some issues.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: No problems with the direction.
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: I don't think that's her fault though.
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: Mostly the writing which I think she was still involved with.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: But directing wise it still looked good. In fact it
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: was a whole different type of sparkly. It was 1984 sparkly.
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: Very cool in it's datedness. Kind of trying to do
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: a retro thing.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: Just too much going on.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: And it crosses a major line that no one should
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: be okay with. I don't know. That was just weird.
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: But this was a quality movie from start to finish.
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: I hope to see more from everybody involved.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Definitely. I liked all the performances. And again... should have
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: already been on top of at least one of the
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: other actors. I I've always liked what I've seen of Rachel.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: So it's like the rest of these, I just kind
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: of want to go back and find, and especially this,
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: I know Shiva baby got pretty good reviews. So I
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: want to watch that still. I just hadn't gotten around
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: to it.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Same here.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: But, um, again, I kind of hope this opens that
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: door even more. And like, she gets a chance to
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: write and direct, um, You know, more stuff... Again, this
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: one I feel like is so heavy with... Well, I mean,
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: she worked with Rachel in her last movie, too. So, like,
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: maybe she's always going to work with her. But, like,
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: I feel like there's so much of her just character
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: that comes through as a writer, as a person, that, like,
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: it transfers over onto her character and the movie as
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: a whole. So I don't know if she... How different
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: it would be to just kind of hand her a
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: separate movie or let her write a movie without her.
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: Well, what I would like this... to be is um
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: i can't think of a good example to compare this
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: to but every now and then you get that that
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: person who becomes that serious auteur the one that everybody's
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: like yeah and and they can say oh yeah but
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: look at this goofy thing i made decades ago or
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: whatever and whether she stays in comedy or doesn't whatever
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: I mean, that's her decision.
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: I think it would be okay to... Because again, I
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: feel like it's rare that you even have a comedy
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: auteur get a Carl Reiner that in his day made
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: some of the greatest comedies ever. Again, he's another one
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: that later did some weird questionable stuff that nobody paid
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: attention to. But half of it still made money, really.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: It's like stuff you didn't even know he directed. He
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: made tons of money at the box office and you're like, wait,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: that was Carl Reiner? So... He is one of those
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: that could put a stamp on it and do comedy
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: and yet still kind of... I mean, as much as
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: auteur gets thrown around with comedies, it's pretty rare, actually. But, yeah,
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: I think it's okay to get somebody that wants to
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: do comedy and still give them that freedom and chance
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: to do a series of movies like you do with
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: an auteur. Like you do with... Oh, man, I love Fincher. Oh, yeah.
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: I like that moment of just a random tie in
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: that like, yeah, it's attached and has nothing to do
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: with what's about to happen. Except everybody's going to get
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: beat the hell out of them. Oh yeah. But yeah,
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: you get, you know, those, those kind of directors always
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: kind of get the push and the chance to do
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: whatever they want. But yeah, I'd like to see.
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: That's a much more eloquent way to say.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Yeah. I'd like to see more comedy people get a
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: chance to follow through.
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: Sure.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: And, become almost an auteur of comedy, but again, it's rare.
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: Or if so, it's usually not good. Once again, I
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: come back to, I don't like a lot of modern
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: comedy stuff.
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: Or just give me three or four more movies that
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: were this well written and performed and.
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: This well put together.
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: All right. Anything else we need to address on this
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: one other than it's pretty awesome.
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: Pretty awesome. Uh, No, that's all I have to say
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: on it. You know, I feel like even the sort
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: of person who normally, to some degree, wouldn't want to
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: watch this sort of movie because they would afraid it
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: would be preachy, I still feel like even they could
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: enjoy it.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like it never crosses that line.
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: Preachy was in quotes, by the way.
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: Well, yeah, because there definitely are, and there have even
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: been ones in recent years I've listened to. In particular,
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: there was one that, like, just rub this one guy
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: the wrong way. And like, it is, it was a
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: queer made movie and it had a star that was
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: very openly gay and just, that wasn't the problem. It
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: was a bad movie. Right. And like, that's what pissed
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: him off. And so like, It's like one of those
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: like I want there to be one that's the other
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: hand that like doesn't need to be preachy. It's just
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: well written. And that's why you're there. And if it's
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: normalizing the fact that these women are empowered or that
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: they're gay or that. everyone's openly gay. Like all of
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: these things don't need to be the gimmick of the movie. Right.
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: It's just part of the story they're telling. I'm like,
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: that's how it needs to be.
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: I think this was the way it should be. And yeah,
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: this was pretty, this did a pretty good job of that.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: Yeah. I liked that.
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: I do think there were a couple of, and we've
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: talked about them a little bit. There were a couple
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: of clunky bits here and there, but not because of
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: gender or, uh, sexuality, not because of any of that,
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: just as a... It seemed like a really good attempt
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: by a not super experienced filmmaker.
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: Again, I feel like there's a good amount of probably
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: allowing people to throw out extra lines along the way.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: So maybe that takes away from worrying about the super
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: nailed down overarching screenplay when You're equally as invested in, oh,
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: let's just try it this way today.
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: So in a way, sometimes you get the most amazing
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: scenes from doing that. Other times, maybe it takes away
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: from you worrying about the details as much.
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that could be.
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: Yeah, a mixed bag, so.
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: I guess what I'm saying is that it flowed well.
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: And it was, again, it seems like they knew the
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: rule of like, don't do a two and a half
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: hour comedy. Like, which they do. So, you know, it's like,
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: if you know what you're doing, do it well. And like,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: just get in and out, tell your jokes, hit them
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: every step of the way. And then when you're done
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: with your story, you're done and like wrap it up.
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: So I think keeping a tight comedy is like a
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: really important part of it being a comedy. Right. I
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: think that's kind of key that they figured out. And like,
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: it doesn't overstay any of it, even as it gets weirder.
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: And like, they could have gone down a few more
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: avenues of like, well, what's going on over there? Yeah.
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: Sometimes we just touch on it and move along. What's
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: up with her mom? And why is she sleeping with
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: this weird high school kid?
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: I'm like, Nope.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: We're just like, well, that was weird anyway. No wonder
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: she's all pissed off.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: No, it takes a, to write something like that, I
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: would think would take a great amount of restraint because you,
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: you touch on it. You don't, you touch on it
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: just enough that we get a taste of what's going on.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: And then you move on to the next thing. You
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: don't dwell on it.
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: Which again, I think is the trap that some of
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: the other, and maybe it is the directors that have
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: been around for a while and nobody tells them no.
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: So that you're making a Judd Apatow, two and a
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: half hour, three hour comedy. Sometimes it's like, You are,
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: you know, people are letting you go too far with
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: your like, nobody says no. So like, oh, no, keep rolling.
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: Keep going. Yeah, let's go down this road and see
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: what's going on with this character. I'm like, oh, and another.
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: movie maybe not not now because we've already been here
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: for two hours what are you doing so yeah i
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: think it's it's finding that balance of like specifically in
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: a comedy like keeping it tight keeping it moving just
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: being funny like they they hit all of that on
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: this one so oh.
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: Yeah yeah i agree quite enjoyable Would recommend.
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: Well, normally. Now, see, this is where things might be different.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Because if you're just one of those regular people, then
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: you're probably not used to this point when we would
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: normally come up with what the next movie is. But
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: since we're not doing horror this time, I don't have
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: to roll the die. This is how we normally do
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: it in our super cool horror club. So, it is
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: a good chance to tell you what's coming up and
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: to let you know that. is what we do, and
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: why you should be involved. So in case you're not
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: part of that crew, if you want to know and
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: start planning, next time we're back probably with that Nora
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: person who's maybe back. I don't know. She might just
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: stay there.
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: You know, after today, I don't think we need her.
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: We were sent a photo from some tropical paradise that
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: I wouldn't come back if I were her.
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: Yeah, but I wouldn't have gone there in the first place.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: We'll see if she comes back. If she does, she
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: will join us for the next Horror Club where we
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: will watch Alice, Sweet Alice, which I am kind of
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: looking forward to.
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: Looking forward to.
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: And I didn't want to steal it away from Nora.
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: So that's why we threw in this in between. And
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: I'm kind of glad we did because otherwise I might
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: not have gotten to bottoms right away.
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: Yeah, this was fun.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: I like this as an extra little in between.
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: And I was joking. I do miss Nora, but I
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: feel like we survived without her.
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: I would like to hear her take on it.
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: It's kind of like when Aunt Bea went to her
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: sister's house. We made it through.
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: Maybe she will watch it and she can like, normally
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: we do horror at the top of the show, but
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: maybe we can get her take on Bottoms as a
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: little sneak peek in the intro in the upcoming episodes.
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: We'll see. In the meantime, you should join the Meltdown
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: Horror Club and then you can hear us talk about Alice,
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: Sweet Alice, which is going to be awesome. So, Go
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: do that now.
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: Do it right now.
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: Right now. Because we're almost done, so you're going to
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: have to wait until the show's over.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: Just pause. Go sign up for it. Come back and
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: you'll hear us say, otherwise that about does it. We
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: will return next time, same geek feed.
- 1:40:56Speaker 3: Thanks for listening. Bye.
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: Turn around.
- 1:41:08Speaker 6: Every now and then I get a little bit lonely
- 1:41:11Speaker 6: And you're never coming round Turn around Every now and
- 1:41:16Speaker 6: then I get a little bit tired Of listening.
- 1:41:19Speaker 5: To the sound of my tears.
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: Turn around Every now and then I get a little
- 1:41:24Speaker 4: bit nervous.
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: That the best of all the years have gone.
- 1:41:28Speaker 4: By Turn around Every now and then I get a
- 1:41:32Speaker 4: little bit terrified And then I see the light Every
- 1:41:39Speaker 4: now and then I fall apart All of the time.
- 1:42:12Speaker 4: I don't know what to do.
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: I'm always.
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: In the dark. I really need you tonight.
- 1:42:35Speaker 5: There's nothing I can do, a total eclipse of the heart.
- 1:42:53Speaker 6: Turn around Every now and then I get a little
- 1:42:55Speaker 6: bit restless And.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: I dream of something wild Turn around.
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: Every now and then I get a little.
- 1:43:02Speaker 5: Bit helpless And I'm lying like a child in your
- 1:43:05Speaker 5: arms Turn around.
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: Every now and then I get a little bit angry.
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: And I know I've got to get.
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: Down and try Every now and then I get a
- 1:43:17Speaker 4: little bit terrified But then I see the look in
- 1:43:20Speaker 4: your eyes Every now and then I You can take
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: it to the end of the line Your love is
- 1:43:57Speaker 4: like a shadow on me all of the.
- 1:44:01Speaker 5: Time Once upon a time I was falling in love
- 1:44:55Speaker 5: Now I'm only falling apart There's nothing I can do,
- 1:45:02Speaker 5: a total eclipse of the heart. Nothing I can say,
- 1:45:09Speaker 5: a total eclipse of the heart.
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: When I say dumb, yeah, I would have enjoyed it.
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: I mean, there are a lot of comedies that I
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: would refer to as dumb comedies. I don't with this one. But, like, again,
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: I don't say it's a bad thing all of the time. Right. But.
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: On the surface, I feel like this is a dumb comedy.
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: This presents itself. Again, the trailer kind of makes it
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: look like a dumb comedy.
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: But it had a surprisingly large amount of layers to it.
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: Yeah. It's way smarter than... Again, it's almost so smart
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: about how it's doing it that it's using that. Like
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: it's toying with you of like, look at this dumb comedy.
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: And then like, oh, along the way, guess what? We
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: worked in all this other stuff that maybe you weren't
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: even picking up on because you were sucked in by
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: the dumb comedy and they punch each other in the
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: face a lot. But along the way, guess what? There's
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: other smarter stuff that we've worked into the screenplay. So, haha,
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: joke's on you. You got a better movie than you
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: even thought you were going to get.
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
