- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Thank you for taking some time from your day to tune in to this episode.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Today I was going to tackle this topic of self-limiting beliefs, um, and and sort of the top 10 that I've been hearing recently that I would like to see if we could set an intention to maybe start striking from our lives.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: So both positive and negative beliefs about ourselves truly contribute to our mindset and strongly impact how we relate to ourselves as well as to other people.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: And the subconscious belief system about ourselves, other people, and the world around us truly influence our thoughts, our feelings, and our behavior, which then in turn create the reality that we're living.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: So it determines the quality of our relationships, it say it shapes our satisfaction with ourselves, with our life, with what we're doing, and at the end of the day, it affects our emotional well-being.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: So when we think about it, most of our beliefs can be traced back to our early childhood.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: Um, and they end up those those beliefs continue to manifest through our adulthood.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: And it's not to say that all beliefs we have are negative or that they're positive.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: It's not to say that when we do have maybe a false belief or a limiting belief about ourselves that it came from some big T trauma.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: A lot of times our limiting beliefs we wouldn't even notice if we didn't take time to slow it down and understand where it came from.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Because a lot of times as children, we will be told things or we will have experiences that don't seem big at all, but they're they're still told to us or they we still experience them.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: And they get internalized and they create a false belief.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: So some limiting beliefs are you know these negative perceptions about ourselves or the assumptions that we've made about ourselves, the way that we've internalized something in our world, and they can create uh well, actually, they can prevent us from maybe achieving the goals that we have for ourselves or achieving success as we've defined it for ourselves, because what happens is is they we we see ourselves in a certain way and we uh and it almost keeps us within a box.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: So we can't we can't see how we can achieve something that we want for ourselves.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: These self-limiting scripts uh do, like I said, they do tend if we were to track them back, go back to when we were younger.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: So, an example, if you grew up in a family where um, you know, the there was a lot of joking around just um each other and it maybe in a sarcastic way, make that's not a big T trauma.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: That's just the mess that's just how the family spoke amongst themselves, but somehow you internalize it as it was it as true, it could create a self-limiting belief about yourself and one's worthiness.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Now, there could also be big T traumas that can create something similar as well.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: So your pattern of relating to yourself most probably came from just those early childhood years.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: So if, for example, you're you're um part of a family with maybe some insecure attachment styles, there may be this self-limiting belief that you're not good enough uh if you don't meet other others' expectations of you.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: So you constantly seek for that external validation.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: So how do we break free of these self-limiting beliefs?
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Well, uh a lot of this comes from how like our mindset, what we're thinking about ourselves, what we actually know to be true about ourselves, rather than the false beliefs.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Uh affirmations are a big help.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: But now I always say with the caveat of the affirmation has to come from inside out, meaning it has to resonate with your own heart space.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: We can't, you know, there are there are some affirmations that are out there that are beautifully put, they're beautiful words, but if they don't actually truly, we can't actually anchor into them, those affirmations are not going to work for us.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: But I would say that if you can come up with your own positive affirmations or your own positive mantras of how you truly know what's true about yourself, and they're rooted in self-acceptance and really a positive way of how you perceive yourself, those statements can help overcome some of that, those negative self-beliefs or limiting beliefs that you may have.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: So, what are some of the top 10 self-limiting beliefs that I've kind of come across recently?
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Well, one of them is I don't deserve to be loved.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: So, how do we how do we counteract that?
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Well, some positive affirmations might have they they might sound something like, you know, I love, I love who I am, first and foremost, or I am actually worthy of love.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Um, I am loved and appreciated, or I love and appreciate others and deserve to be love and appreciated as well.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Another self-limiting belief is I will never find the right person.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: So when we are hearing that, and that's a limiting belief that we have, maybe we counteract that with I deserve to be love and loved and respected.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Um another self-limiting belief, change is too hard.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: So maybe instead we recognize ourselves, uh, when maybe instead we're saying to ourselves something like, I'm willing to learn and I'm willing to change, I'm willing to grow.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, another self-limiting belief, there's no point in dreaming big, life will always disappoint you.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: So instead, we need to break that one down and maybe challenge it and say, well, what's actually true?
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: And then uh affirm ourselves by recognizing that I am and I am and can be intrinsically motivated to achieve my goals.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: So it's not about life disappointing me, it's about finding that intrinsic motivation for myself.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Some limiting beliefs about ourself, the big one that I come across is I'm not good enough.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: And so instead, it's about leaning into what's actually true about your gifts and your values, and then saying things to yourself, such as I trust myself, I am talented, I am kind, I am confident, I believe in my abilities, I truly know my value system.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: A few other uh self-limiting beliefs about oneself, I'm not pretty enough, uh, which comes out a l oftentimes when I'm talking to clients about uh just uh their own their own self-image, and it's recognizing and asking, you know, who well, by whose definition of beauty, first of all, and what's actually true about you.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: And so what we have to say, and it what we sh what we can say not have to, what we can say instead as a positive affirmation is you know, I am unique, I am a gift within myself, I am blessed with good health, I am beautiful defined by my standards.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: Things like that can help us shift from that negative thought space of not being pretty enough or not being good enough into what we need to know about ourselves.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Because again, what I've said over and over and over again, and I continue to say, is everything comes back to our relationship with ourselves.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: So when we have a solid foundation there, then we're able to engage in relationships authentically with others.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: We're able to set our sights forward on what we want professionally.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: We get to move forward, but it all comes back to the foundation with self has to be really strong.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: And then a couple uh limiting beliefs just around work uh that I've really heard with some of the professionals that I've been that I have as clients.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: I don't have enough experience or knowledge.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: That's a big, big self-limiting belief.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: So it's about recognizing what do I know, and then reminding ourselves of that.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: What have I learned?
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: That especially when we have the limiting belief of I don't have enough of experience, it's actually asking, and what did I do before, right?
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: And recognizing how much have I learned along the way.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Um, another really big one when it comes to the professionals that I work with is I'll never be successful at what I do or I'll never make enough money.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: And it's um it's about slowing it down, recognizing what have you seen success in already, celebrating that and honing in on what's actually true versus this belief that may have been created from a different era.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: It's about recognizing you get to choose how you're gonna write your story.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: You don't have to write the story of you know past years.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: You get to shift that.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Another one that I just wanted to throw out there about a self-limiting belief just regarding money is money's evil or money causes problems.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: And that can again be traced back to maybe some experience that you had when you were younger, and it's recognizing that that doesn't have to actually be the case for you.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: You can you can shift that into a positive affirmation or a way of looking at it as, you know, I will attract, I I not only I will attract money, but I appreciate money for the energy that it is, and I can I can then pay it forward and help others.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: So it's not that money only causes problems, money is simply just energy, and it's about how can I, if I create enough of that energy, might I might I be able to contribute it in other ways.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: So when we when we really just boil this one down, you know, all of us will eventually have some some limiting belief that'll pop up now and then.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: And some of us have persistent limiting beliefs that actually start to cause us to um play smaller than we we want to be or dim our light.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: And when we recognize that the limiting beliefs are starting to hinder us from moving forward, it's about taking steps to shift, recognize where those beliefs are coming from, challenge them, and then start shifting them into beliefs that are actually true about ourselves and that we want to live into.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: So it's about practicing the ability of becoming aware of what those false beliefs are, acknowledging that they're there, and then taking aligned action to shift into what's actually true about yourself.
