Transcript
- 0:00G n I five. It's the Erica Show. iHeartRadio, and I'm so
- 0:03honored. So I have o Mar my buddy who we've done many projects together.
- 0:06But you brought your son Miles in with you this time because I've been
- 0:09hearing about these camps and I've been seeing you on social doing your things,
- 0:13So you got to tell us all about the camps. What is going on
- 0:15with these camps. So this year would be our third annual year doing the
- 0:20M two Youth Mentoring Camp, and we just invite kids from everywhere to come.
- 0:26It's like mostly elementary school, some middle school. We just invite them
- 0:30to come. It's a free camp we do at NC State and they just
- 0:33come and learn and get better and have fun. Okay, So that's incredible.
- 0:36So wait, you got to back up though, how did all of
- 0:38this start? Because you're a young adult yourself and you're already mentoring young kids,
- 0:42which is so inspiring because you are still quote cool, you know,
- 0:45like you're not old like some of us, and so the kids really look
- 0:49up to you. So how did it all start? It was just I
- 0:51was always like kids were like, hey, let's throw the ball, let's
- 0:54do this, let's hang out, and I was like cool. So I
- 0:57talked to my dad and I was like, I think we should do a
- 0:59camp for kids. You know, him, just being the type of dad
- 1:02he is, he got it all together and just helped me. Oh yeah,
- 1:04at to bring some tears up in here. That's amazing. Okay,
- 1:07so this was your brain child where you came up with it, and then
- 1:10Dad's like, all right, I'll put the pieces in place to make it
- 1:12happen. How do other kids in the community get involved? And like,
- 1:17what do you do? When is the camp? The camp is July twentieth.
- 1:21We have some other kids that are from our school, some other players
- 1:23who come who have like already have offers and stuff like that, coming down
- 1:29to share their wisdom and what they've been through with the kids. So that's
- 1:32cool to have them also come and help. How long does it last?
- 1:34It's a one day camp. That's awesome. So what if your kids have
- 1:38no football skills? Can I still come? Yes? Like my son has
- 1:42yet to play football, but I'm like he would come. What are the
- 1:44ages? So we do like eighth grade and anywhere down. Okay, so
- 1:49eighth and below starting with kindergarten. I'm assuming y, but we try to
- 1:52do around fourth grade more so okay, because if we go too far down
- 1:56and kids they don't pay attention. I get it, yeah, over the
- 2:00place, and we don't want to be at the indoor facility and you know,
- 2:02somebody bump into something. So probably about the youngest we goers about fourth
- 2:07grade, even though I had a call with the coach yesterday and I say,
- 2:09if you have third grades and they know the game and they kind of
- 2:14played ball, then it's okay. But you don't have to have a lot
- 2:16of experiences, you know, wanting to come out. Now, how did
- 2:21you get n C State wrapped in? Like? How did they agree to
- 2:23this? You know, it was tough because you have to kind of jump
- 2:28through, uh the n C Double A rules and things like that. So
- 2:31it's just a lot of paperwork and a lot of creating proposals and submitting it
- 2:37to them to get the approval to use that to do it at their facility.
- 2:42At the first year when Myles brought it up to me, we did
- 2:45at ninth Tale Station Park. It was a great camp area. Yeah,
- 2:47fun, but you know, we wanted to level level it up and give
- 2:53the kids an experience that uh that other people, you know that you don't
- 2:58usually get. It's not every day that you get to participate in the camp
- 3:01at a D one facility like Kensey State. So right, it's an inspirational,
- 3:06you know, opportunity. Miles tells part of the story. You know,
- 3:08sometimes when Mile's supposed to be practicing, he'll be over there throwing the
- 3:13ball around with kids. He's always kind of had that you know, fun
- 3:16element. I'm like, listen, we gotta get to work, and he'll
- 3:20be over there, you know, helping little kids out and flipping the ball
- 3:23around with them. And then it was after that he came say, you
- 3:27know, Daddy's guys always ask me for corners and tips and stuff, So
- 3:31can we do a camp? Because I really want to help him out.
- 3:34And so you know, you're a parent, so anytime your kids shows interest
- 3:38in something, right, do everything you can to uh to move that forward.
- 3:42And then so we sit down together and you know, I have to
- 3:46do some of the heavy lifting, but he's super involved helping me out with
- 3:49the sponsors and ideas and all that type of stuff. And he actually gets
- 3:53out there and trains during part of your camp. Like some of the videos
- 3:55that we have, So this is gonna look so amazing on your resume obviously
- 4:00or your you know, your your stuff before you head off to college.
- 4:01Do you want to play ball in college too? Yes? Man, that's
- 4:04the plan. That's the plan. Okay, I love that. And then
- 4:06as a mom of my brain's always like, all right, how many adults
- 4:10are going to be there? So do kids get dropped off by their parents
- 4:13or do they stay? We're there, but we need the parents to stay
- 4:15because I want we don't want to be responsible exactly. Yeah, because you
- 4:18know in some advance they drop them off and go shopping for three or four
- 4:23hours. But no, this is not the type of party. You need
- 4:25to stay there kids that we have a great group of high school coaches,
- 4:30some of the coaches from Mouths High School, but coaches from all around the
- 4:33area. We invite everybody because it's about the community of football more so than
- 4:39you know one team or the other team. So a great group of coaches
- 4:42every year come out and help us out with the kids. And for us,
- 4:45that's important because we want the kids to know that if you want to
- 4:49play ball, one, your grades have to be like they need to be
- 4:54right. That's why we're at university, and two, these high school guys
- 4:58are who you're going to be talking to and if you if you decide to
- 5:00play ball, So why not get information from them early. What are some
- 5:04of the things you've heard, like response, positive feedback, some things that
- 5:08stand out to either of you that you're like, Wow, that made a
- 5:11difference, or I know that that kid will remember this moment forever. Yeah.
- 5:15Oh, I had a lot of kids tell me like I remember a
- 5:17kid last year came up and he said, Myles, I feel like I've
- 5:19gotten so much better, and that really touched me and puts smile on my
- 5:23face. So it's good just to see kids that like take something away from
- 5:27the camp right in the future, and it just shows like you can go
- 5:30so much further, you know, because kids have influence in all areas of
- 5:33life now and so sometimes they'll get pulled in the wrong direction, and so
- 5:36I can't like this keeps your mind right, keeps you motivated, It shows
- 5:41kids like you, Miles that are going to do big things with your life.
- 5:43And it's so it's like I want to be more like that, you
- 5:46know, and not go in another direction because there is so much influence now,
- 5:49and I think what you said earlier is a big deal because it bridges
- 5:53the gap. Right, me and you say something to a kid at that
- 5:56age, they were like, whatever, we're old right exactly. So but
- 5:59you know this is a little bit closer to their age. So him doing
- 6:03things and working with them and still uh, you know, growing and saiff.
- 6:08There are times when you know, I still have to get on them
- 6:10on certain things, of course, but they can relate to that better right
- 6:15coming for much And it is really cool because we'll be out and you know,
- 6:19little kids will roll up on, Hey, when's the camp again?
- 6:23I'm coming back, and then they get to the points I'm gonna beat you,
- 6:27compete with It'll be to see how far they could throw the ball.
- 6:29And it's great to uh for me too to see that. In the community,
- 6:32kids and parents are like, hey, when's the camp. We had
- 6:34a great Yeah, And it's really another cool thing that Miles wanting to make
- 6:40sure that was in the camp is we're not just talking about football for three
- 6:43or four hours. That's not what it is. In between the sessions,
- 6:46we have speakers come out and speak about life. Uh. Jason Gore Pactigue
- 6:53UH, the head coach for the Carolina Covers. These are coming through.
- 6:58We have guys come through and talk about out, you know, life in
- 7:00general, not just football. That's why we make sure people know that it's
- 7:05a mentoring camp, not just a footballs So how can they sign up,
- 7:09get involved and get more details? So this is this is another youth think
- 7:13because Miles didn't know what event Bright was because he never had to buy a
- 7:16ticket, right see, I see I talked about that on the way over
- 7:20here. But it is an m too youth mentoring camp and it's on event
- 7:26Bright And I'll send you a link so that you can share it with you.
- 7:29Yeah, I'll put it on the social of course, this will be
- 7:30on the Aircashra podcast. But I'm so excited to finally meet you and like
- 7:35see where you're going to go in your life because you know you're going to
- 7:38do some big things in your life. And kudos to you, Dad.
- 7:41Sounds good. I appreciate you give us an opportunity to you know, let
- 7:43everybody know about it and come out and have a good time. Thanks y'all,
- 7:47Thank you,
