Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Is this sponsored h No, but it should be.
- 0:04Speaker 2: It's Radio from Hell with another list because people love
- 0:08Speaker 2: a good list. X ninety six.
- 0:11Speaker 3: We've been doing this for several days because it's a
- 0:13Speaker 3: long list and The New York Times was only releasing
- 0:16Speaker 3: like ten at a time to try to string you along.
- 0:19Speaker 3: It's there a list of one hundred best movies of
- 0:23Speaker 3: the twenty first century. I've put a link to the
- 0:26Speaker 3: whole list on my Facebook page and on my twitter feed.
- 0:31Speaker 3: If you would like to read it yourself, share that around.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And they didn't. They didn't just put it together themselves.
- 0:36Speaker 2: They asked all kinds of actors and directors and you know,
- 0:41Speaker 2: just what they're what they considered the best movies of
- 0:44Speaker 2: the twenty first century were, and then they kind of
- 0:46Speaker 2: picked and chose.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Which is kind of nice because if you can find out,
- 0:50Speaker 3: like an actor that you really like or director and
- 0:52Speaker 3: you wonder what their their picks are, you can see
- 0:54Speaker 3: all of those. So we're on number twenty nine of
- 0:57Speaker 3: one hundred. It's a Rival, which is a fantastic sci
- 1:03Speaker 3: fi Yes it is. It's Dennis Villeneuve and Amy Adams
- 1:07Speaker 3: is in it.
- 1:08Speaker 2: It's really it's sort of a perplexing movie. At first,
- 1:11Speaker 2: it's kind of it's sort of it's it's.
- 1:15Speaker 3: It's an it's an it's an alien movie.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and you have to think about it. And then
- 1:19Speaker 2: the end of it is like you go, wait a minute.
- 1:21Speaker 3: What a timeline kind of shifts.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty fast, really good though.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Number twenty eight also a favorite, The Dark Knight Christopher
- 1:29Speaker 3: Nolan's The Dark Knight. This is, of course the one
- 1:32Speaker 3: that has he pledger is the Joker?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Is that the only that's the only time he was
- 1:37Speaker 2: the Joker? Right? Yeah?
- 1:38Speaker 3: It was Yeah, that was though, and he posthumously won
- 1:41Speaker 3: the Academy Award for The Dead Yeah. Number twenty seven
- 1:46Speaker 3: adaptation This.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Is oh man, that's a great movie.
- 1:50Speaker 3: A it's a written by Charlie Kaufman, and it's a
- 1:54Speaker 3: Spike Jones movie. It's got Nicholas Cage in it.
- 1:56Speaker 2: It's it's where one of those movies where you can say,
- 1:58Speaker 2: oh yeah, Nicholas Cage and really act when he can.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Number twenty six Anatomy of a Fall. I love this movie.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I don't think I so.
- 2:08Speaker 3: It's Sander Huhler who that year she was nominated for
- 2:12Speaker 3: two different movies for her acting she's not a really
- 2:15Speaker 3: well known actress. This movie it's about so her husband
- 2:21Speaker 3: falls and dies at their house. Have you seen it, Katie,
- 2:23Speaker 3: I've seen it, yes, And the whole movie is trying
- 2:26Speaker 3: to figure out what happened? Did he did he jump?
- 2:30Speaker 3: Was he pushed?
- 2:30Speaker 2: Did he just was a like out of a window
- 2:33Speaker 2: or something? Okay?
- 2:34Speaker 3: And I mean and it goes like through a trial
- 2:37Speaker 3: and at the end of the movie you still don't
- 2:41Speaker 3: really know what happened, Like it could have been this,
- 2:44Speaker 3: or it could have been that.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Lots of no good No, No, it's great. You want
- 2:47Speaker 2: don't you want resolution?
- 2:48Speaker 3: No, it's it's because it's about more than that. It's
- 2:50Speaker 3: about it's a kind of a snapshot of a marriage
- 2:53Speaker 3: and how you don't really know people what they're like
- 2:55Speaker 3: behind closed doors. And there's a dog in it. That's
- 2:59Speaker 3: a great actor. Yep, number twenty five. I didn't care
- 3:03Speaker 3: for this Phantom Thread. It's another Paul Thomas Anderson.
- 3:07Speaker 2: You know. As much as I like Paul Thomas Anderson,
- 3:09Speaker 2: I didn't bother seeing it.
- 3:10Speaker 3: So oh you didn't even see No.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I just thought the premise was not So.
- 3:14Speaker 3: It's Daniel day Lewis and he's a dress maker.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Like a fancy yeah, famous dress misstress.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Maker, so kind of very pardon the pun, buttoned up,
- 3:26Speaker 3: you know, unemotional. Yeah, I didn't care.
- 3:31Speaker 2: What's what's the point of the movie.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Let's see. This film is a sumptuous, subversive recounting of
- 3:38Speaker 3: a love story between the exacting Reynolds and his unruly muse.
- 3:43Speaker 2: It's just it's supposed to be a love story, all right.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Eh. Number twenty four another movie I didn't care for her.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, that was weird is.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Joaquin Phoenix falling in Love with Ai. Basically I didn't
- 3:56Speaker 3: like Number twenty three. Boy who this is another Richard
- 4:01Speaker 3: link Letter with Ethan Hawk. Yeah, I didn't see that one.
- 4:06Speaker 3: It's it's Richard Linkletter's he has a definite style. Wels.
- 4:11Speaker 3: That was a definite style. Wes Anderson. Number twenty two
- 4:14Speaker 3: is Grand Budapest.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Hotel, which was hilarious.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Number twenty one also Wes Anderson. The Royal tenebaums that.
- 4:23Speaker 2: That's one of my favorite movies of all time. And
- 4:25Speaker 2: I never get tired of quoting Gene Hackman in it.
- 4:30Speaker 2: He talked talking to these two little kids, two twins,
- 4:33Speaker 2: whose mother has has died I forget how she died
- 4:37Speaker 2: in an accident or something, and he says, no, it's
- 4:39Speaker 2: a terrible shame about your mother. She was a terribly
- 4:42Speaker 2: attractive woman.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Number twenty is The Wolf of Wall Street. Pretty good,
- 4:50Speaker 3: Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 4:52Speaker 2: That's the first time we saw what's her name? Mark,
- 4:58Speaker 2: that's yeah, the first time I ever saw I thought
- 5:00Speaker 2: that that person is impossibly beautiful and and smart.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And good and yeah, a wonderful human.
- 5:07Speaker 3: One of my favorite directors for number nineteen David Fincher.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Everything he does is great. And number nineteen movie is Zodiac.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You know, I haven't seen it. I should see it
- 5:16Speaker 2: because I like movies like that. It's the Zodiac Killer.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Right, Yep, we watched it Camping, Lambing.
- 5:24Speaker 3: It's it's Jake Jillen Hall. It's a Robert Downey Junior.
- 5:27Speaker 3: It's Mark Ruffalo. It's it's good. Eighteen Is you two?
- 5:33Speaker 3: Mama Tombian. That's Alfonso Curion.
- 5:36Speaker 2: It's the first time we ever saw Diego Luna.
- 5:38Speaker 3: And Gail Garcia Bernala.
- 5:40Speaker 2: He was like a high school kid. Yeah.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Number seventeen Broke Back Mountain. Oh Aang Lee directed that.
- 5:48Speaker 3: You might not remember that Eith Ledger and Jake gillen Hall.
- 5:51Speaker 3: No oh yeah, Jake Jillenhall, you're right, I don't know why. No, sorry,
- 5:57Speaker 3: don't say no, I'm sorry. Number sixteen, I can't quit you.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon another Angley film.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Fascinating movie.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Really movie, it's beautiful. It's beautiful action. Yes, a number fifteen.
- 6:13Speaker 3: City of God.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Didn't see that.
- 6:16Speaker 3: This is let's see a teenager forces a younger teenager
- 6:20Speaker 3: to kill an even younger child. Yeah, heart, this is
- 6:24Speaker 3: It takes place in Rio dejan Eiro. Number fourteen, inglorious Bastards, entertaining.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It was entertaining. I wouldn't.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I had a hard time with it because it rewrote
- 6:38Speaker 2: history so much.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I loved it. It's a Quentin Tarantino Number thirteen. Ooh,
- 6:45Speaker 3: this is a good one. Children of Men, Yeah, oh yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 3: This is another Alfonso Kuran movie where babies just stop happening. Ye,
- 6:57Speaker 3: Clive Owen and I don't think she's naked in it.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Why can I think of her name? Julianne Moore not naked.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Number twelve, Zone of Interest. So this is the other
- 7:11Speaker 3: movie that Sandra Hueller was nominated for. These both came out.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Did you see this Yeah, I meant to go see
- 7:17Speaker 2: it because it's fascinating.
- 7:19Speaker 3: So it's about a family that's living at Auschwitz the commandant. Yeah,
- 7:25Speaker 3: and you never see inside the concentration camp. You hear
- 7:29Speaker 3: things interesting, you hear screams, you hear gunshots, see smoke,
- 7:37Speaker 3: and this family is just living like nothing is going on.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Oh I did want to see this movie.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, okay, Well, I mean the father knows because
- 7:47Speaker 2: he's the common Yeah, and he goes off to work
- 7:49Speaker 2: every day to you know, run the gas. Yeah.
- 7:51Speaker 3: But and the wife knows what's going on because he
- 7:54Speaker 3: like brings her like for coats and things from it.
- 7:58Speaker 3: It's really really good, hard but really really good. Number eleven,
- 8:03Speaker 3: Mad Max Fury Road.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Okay, well I thought that was Furry Road.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Now Fury Road. This is the George Miller one with
- 8:11Speaker 3: Charlie's and Tom Hardy.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I thought that this one was good. Then then the
- 8:16Speaker 2: follow up, Oh I didn't care for that much.
- 8:20Speaker 3: All right. We've been running through the list the New
- 8:23Speaker 3: York Times list of the best movies of the twenty
- 8:26Speaker 3: first century. They've been releasing this a little bit at
- 8:28Speaker 3: a time throughout the week. A couple of interesting things
- 8:32Speaker 3: about how they compiled this list. They asked a bunch
- 8:35Speaker 3: of actors, directors, musicians for their list, and they used
- 8:42Speaker 3: that and you can read all of those individual lists,
- 8:46Speaker 3: which is kind of cool. The other cool thing is
- 8:49Speaker 3: when you're reading the list, there are two little boxes
- 8:53Speaker 3: you can check, like, oh, I've seen it, or I
- 8:56Speaker 3: want to watch it, kind of as a bookmark thing.
- 8:59Speaker 3: And if you want to, there's a link you can
- 9:02Speaker 3: click and it'll show you where it's streaming. Oh, so,
- 9:05Speaker 3: help you find some nice So some of them are
- 9:08Speaker 3: easy to find. Some of them, you know, especially the
- 9:10Speaker 3: foreign films and things, not so much. So we are
- 9:13Speaker 3: up to the top ten, and I have skipped ahead
- 9:17Speaker 3: and looked, and my guess is there people are gonna
- 9:20Speaker 3: not care for.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Really we'll see, And I guess are these supposed to
- 9:25Speaker 2: be the best ten? Or is this just overall a
- 9:28Speaker 2: list of one hundred great movies? You know, not necessarily
- 9:32Speaker 2: they're ranked.
- 9:33Speaker 3: They're ranked, And actually, if you go through like I
- 9:36Speaker 3: went through and looked at the individual list that the
- 9:38Speaker 3: actors and directors sent in of their favorites, and you
- 9:41Speaker 3: will see these movies pop up again and again. So
- 9:44Speaker 3: I think they just took the average of what so
- 9:47Speaker 3: they're an agreement.
- 9:49Speaker 2: And then you'll see movies that you've never heard of
- 9:51Speaker 2: or that are so weird you think, what yep.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Number ten another David Fincher film, The Social Network. This
- 9:59Speaker 3: is the one about Facebook. Jesse Eisenberg shows you what
- 10:03Speaker 3: a creep he is?
- 10:04Speaker 2: What a creep? What's his name is Zuckerberg? Mark Zuckerberg.
- 10:09Speaker 2: That's how Facebook and they're talking about. Of course, this
- 10:14Speaker 2: was written by She's I'm so tired, I'm walking, walking
- 10:20Speaker 2: and talking guy h.
- 10:25Speaker 3: West Wing.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Yeah that gun, you know, so Aaron Sorkin, written by
- 10:30Speaker 2: Aaron Sorkin. He's talking about writing a sequel.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Well, there's more there. That's number ten. Number nine a
- 10:40Speaker 3: lovely film, spirited.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Away, scary film. Yeah, this is this film is a
- 10:45Speaker 2: little too scary for it's a it's an animated it's
- 10:49Speaker 2: a Miyazaki animated film, and it's a little bit too
- 10:53Speaker 2: frightening for young kids.
- 10:54Speaker 3: I like Kiki's Delivery Service.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I watched that first Gradeky's.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Delivery Say versus My our Friend Todo.
- 11:01Speaker 1: We also watched that in first grade.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Number eight, Get Out.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Jordan Peele has done very good with his movies.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Yeah, really really good. Number seven Eternal Sunshine of the
- 11:19Speaker 3: Spotless Minds. So good. Another screenpay play by Charlie Kaufman.
- 11:25Speaker 3: It's Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey. It's a hard one.
- 11:29Speaker 1: To watch, but it's beautiful.
- 11:31Speaker 3: But you know, it makes you think, is it better
- 11:34Speaker 3: to remember? It's better? It's better, it's better. Let's see
- 11:41Speaker 3: number six.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I spend my days trying to forget.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Oh, this is a great one. No Country for Old Men.
- 11:48Speaker 3: The Cohen Brothers. Javier Bardem often pops up on lists
- 11:53Speaker 3: of best villains every just a great, great film there.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Let's see number five. I have not seen this Moonlight.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I didn't see it either. People do say it's a
- 12:09Speaker 2: beautiful movie. Though.
- 12:11Speaker 3: What people remember about Moonlight, unfortunately, is this is the
- 12:15Speaker 3: year at the Oscars that Fade Dunaway and Warren Batty
- 12:19Speaker 3: were presenting the award for Best Picture. Oh, and they
- 12:23Speaker 3: misread La La Land. That's right, Moonlight. Let's see yesh
- 12:30Speaker 3: maherschela who's hit another film coming out release soon? I
- 12:36Speaker 3: thought I thought that shaw Means was telling us about
- 12:41Speaker 3: let's see number four. I've never heard of.
- 12:43Speaker 2: This movie in the mood for law.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Do you know this movie?
- 12:47Speaker 2: I do not.
- 12:48Speaker 3: This is Soon.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I know the actors.
- 12:50Speaker 3: This is Soon. After a journalist and a secretary, both
- 12:53Speaker 3: married to other people, move into the same crowded Hong
- 12:55Speaker 3: Kong building in nineteen sixty two, they brushed past each
- 12:58Speaker 3: other in a mesmerizing slow emotion. Sparks don't fly, they smolder,
- 13:03Speaker 3: they keep on burning in this rapturously beautiful romance in
- 13:06Speaker 3: which inscribes desire in every glance and unspoken word. A
- 13:11Speaker 3: sensuous curve of a woman's back becomes an emblem of longing,
- 13:14Speaker 3: while tendrils of smoke from a man's cigarette expressed the
- 13:18Speaker 3: ache of life's impermanence.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I know never, you know, That's what when I smoked.
- 13:23Speaker 2: That's what the smoke from a cigarette always said to me.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Life's impermanence really quick.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Going back to mahersha Alie, he's in Jurassic World.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Did anyone come up? That's I knew it was something
- 13:33Speaker 3: that was coming out soon. That's what it is. Sophia
- 13:36Speaker 3: Coppola of this movie says, it really blew my mind.
- 13:39Speaker 3: You could make films this way. I just I've never
- 13:42Speaker 3: even heard of this. I guess that's what these lists
- 13:44Speaker 3: are good for. Like if that many people say, no, no,
- 13:47Speaker 3: this is fantastic. When it's the top five, number three,
- 13:51Speaker 3: there will be blood. Drink your milkshake, Paul Thomas Anderson,
- 13:57Speaker 3: drink it up. It's interesting these same directors again and
- 14:00Speaker 3: again and again. This is about blood and oil. Daniel
- 14:04Speaker 3: day Lewis, of course, with the line that Bill was
- 14:08Speaker 3: staying there number two, I don't. I'm wondering if this
- 14:12Speaker 3: is because he just died. No, no, no, number two.
- 14:16Speaker 2: There are there are I think particularly, you know, our
- 14:22Speaker 2: directors and actors think this is a brilliant movie.
- 14:26Speaker 3: So it's David Lynch's Mulholland Drive.
- 14:29Speaker 2: They say it's his masterpiece.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Yeah. David Lynch's perverse fairy Tale tracks the downward spiral
- 14:34Speaker 3: of a bright eyed, young young actress Betty a revelatory
- 14:39Speaker 3: Naomi Watson, a career defining performance, who stumbles into a
- 14:42Speaker 3: dangerous labyrinth mystery shortly after arriving in Los Angeles. Filled
- 14:47Speaker 3: with doubles. This is one of Lynch's bleakest, most terrifying films,
- 14:50Speaker 3: and among his most emotionally devastating. It's also one of
- 14:54Speaker 3: the great movies about Hollywood, a dark mirror where the
- 14:57Speaker 3: dreams turn into nightmares. Maybe that's why all the filmmakers. Yeah,
- 15:00Speaker 3: because it's it's a Hollywood movie and the number one
- 15:04Speaker 3: movie of the twenty first century so far, so far.
- 15:10Speaker 3: This is according to The New York Times. Parasite Ah, okay,
- 15:15Speaker 3: Bong June Ho, It's good.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great. It's really great.
- 15:20Speaker 3: It is. It's a tale of halves and have nots,
- 15:22Speaker 3: a ferocious rebuke on the devastations of neoliberalism. Bong June
- 15:26Speaker 3: hosts pleasurably kinked and unsettling. Shocker follows a destitute family
- 15:31Speaker 3: as it insinuates itself into a wealthy household. It's cool, yeah,
- 15:35Speaker 3: and it's it's it's oddly satisfying.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say that, but but the.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Number one movie.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Well, Julianne Moore voted for it as her number one movie,
- 15:47Speaker 2: and then you can click and see what other movies
- 15:49Speaker 2: she voted. Oh what else did she The forty year
- 15:52Speaker 2: old version, really super bad? Okay, fandom Thread, Parasite lost
- 15:59Speaker 2: in translation, Amore, the Black Swan. Uh, I can't read
- 16:05Speaker 2: that one.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Uh.
- 16:08Speaker 2: There's some of the ox MacKinnon and what's this one?
- 16:14Speaker 2: I have to open it up so I can read it.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Now. There's a whole list of all of this.
- 16:19Speaker 2: A sanctuary and a prison.
- 16:21Speaker 3: I never heard of it.
- 16:22Speaker 2: No, oh, wait a minute, No the movie. The film
- 16:26Speaker 2: is called dog Tooth. No, I never heard of it.
- 16:29Speaker 2: But Julianne Moore has.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Yeah, you've got uh Pedro, I'm Oldivar, Pamela Anderson, Elizabeth Banks,
- 16:37Speaker 3: Mike Birbiglia, mel Brooks, Tony Collette, Solo, Brian Cox.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I want to go through mel Brooks and Elizabeth Banks.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Those are those are the two i'd go through.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Uh. Stephen King, Nathan Lane, John Lethgow. It's kind of
- 16:51Speaker 3: fun to see what what.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Their favorite I would love to know what Stephen King's
- 16:55Speaker 1: favorites are. They all horror movies at this point.
- 16:57Speaker 3: I don't think they are.
- 16:58Speaker 1: I'm sure they're not.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Let me see we're Stevie. Let's do this quickly. Stephen
- 17:02Speaker 3: Kings are black Hawk Down, great movie, Broke Back Mountain,

- 17:28Speaker 3: I've never heard of that one.
- 17:29Speaker 1: That's the new one.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I just told you about it. Oh is that the
- 17:32Speaker 2: John John Liftgow and.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Uh with that weird doll.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Yeah that's his name.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Other old guy.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah, he's uh, he's you know, captain in the in
- 17:45Speaker 2: the Spirates of the Caribbean. And Jeffrey Rush there you

- 17:58Speaker 1: And guess what we can finally play after this whole
- 18:01Speaker 1: week of going through this list, we've hoped you'd enjoyed
- 18:04Speaker 1: another list with Radio from Hell on X ninety six. Yes,
