- 0:00Have a hard time with the bag around, Famous on finding new ways,
- 0:04new achieve as confidences stop, haven't a hard time put it into the blows,
- 0:14war on finally realizing you're on it's your time now. So I'm Rory
- 0:25from Foody Blue and I play the guitar and sing in the band. We're
- 0:32a bit of an alt rock indie rock outfit out of New Zealand and we've
- 0:38just had a new single come out called Hot Garbage, which is more in
- 0:41the punky realm of Fiagra boys and idols. We're super stoked to have it
- 0:45out and yeah, beautiful or thanks for joining us today, brother, Yeah,
- 0:51yeah, thank you for having me. Thank you for having me.
- 0:53It's awesome pleasure, says you. Sam Voodoo Boo recently released this single,
- 0:57Hot Garbage. Like I know, it hasn't been out that long, but
- 1:00how's the earlier reception been. Yeah, the reception, The reception has been
- 1:04great. I think one thing that we've gotten pretty often with this single is
- 1:11that it's quite reminiscent of the stuff we were originally doing about about four years
- 1:15ago. But it's just a level above sort of what we were doing,
- 1:21and it kind of from the people that I've spoken to has sort of shown
- 1:25a bit more maturity in what we're doing, even though I would like to
- 1:29say that the things that we're talking about are probably a lot less mature.
- 1:34But it's I don't know, it's just really cool to here that it's it's
- 1:38more of what people like from us, but it's it's been taken into a
- 1:41completely different direction and it sounds better than it has done before. Well,
- 1:46so let's go into that a bit deeper Musically. May like it's more of
- 1:49a punk song then than the rock song that he's been doing the last couple
- 1:52of years, isn't it. M Yeah, Yeah, absolutely, And I
- 1:57think I think that that comes down to the last to two albums, well,
- 2:02especially the last one that we did, being a lot about like themes
- 2:06and concepts and and and all of that kind of crap, and then I
- 2:08was like, wait a minute, nobody's gonna care. I need, I
- 2:15need. I need to put something out there that I am just having fun
- 2:19with And if if I can't show that I'm having fun on a record,
- 2:22then other people aren't gonna be having fun with it either. So I think
- 2:25that that was a really important part for me. Is I could obviously still
- 2:30write about things that matter. But I think I think there's not been too
- 2:34hard on myself about like, oh, but this song needs to fit with
- 2:37this song in some thematic way, and I need to talk about these things.
- 2:39It's like, no, let's let's let's put down some really cool drums
- 2:44and guitar and bass, and let's just think about what seems relevant at the
- 2:47time. So, yeah, if you say you're sort of gone back to
- 2:53your roots a little bit with the punk Star, like, did you actually
- 2:55sit down to write this song like that or did it just sort of come
- 2:59out by that the song really started how a lot of songs off of what
- 3:04we're doing now has and that is just by getting a drum machine to to
- 3:09just just play along to something really quickly, I'll layer in some bass,
- 3:14a layer and some guitar, and I'll just I'll just keep going like that.
- 3:16I think the drums are a lot more important than they have been on
- 3:20previous records. It's it's really just mean about how the groove and the beat
- 3:25sort of make the song go along, rather than thinking about, Oh,
- 3:29there's this cool riff or there's this cool vocal that I have. It's like
- 3:32it's very much driven by the drums, and you guys actually produced this song,
- 3:38is selves made. So what's what's some of the advantages and disadvantages of
- 3:42keeping that within the band. Yeah, so I think I think time management
- 3:46is probably something that doesn't go too well because we think, ah, the
- 3:50producers, the drummer, we can, we can get him in whenever we
- 3:53want to. You know, we're not We're not paying for his time or
- 3:55anything like that. So I think maybe the song took a little bit longer
- 4:00than it should have to get out there. But I think that the real
- 4:02real positive of it is, you know, a producer leaves their mark on
- 4:09an album quite significantly, and in a way, it becomes even though they're
- 4:15your songs, it becomes their version of the record. It's it's their way
- 4:18of putting pen to paper, I guess, even though everything's being pre made.
- 4:24And I think the advantage, the real advantage of having the producer be
- 4:28us as a band is that we we know what we think we should sound
- 4:33like, and that's and that's what we have to portray, is what's in
- 4:38our heads. We don't have to explain to anybody else what's in our head.
- 4:42It just comes out and we go does this sound right? Does this
- 4:45sound wrong? And we and we go from there. So I definitely think
- 4:48it's a more authentic way of us making making the songs. Now, if
- 4:54you're plan to release two more singles in the lead up to your third album,
- 4:57which comes out in June, so the next two songs sonically similar,
- 5:00like they're more down the punk road? Are they sort of a bit diverse?
- 5:04Ah? So I'm not having to try and think of which. Yes,
- 5:10So each song is I would say, pretty wildly different from each other.
- 5:15Everything. It is also similar in the sense that it's just very very
- 5:21chaotic and hard hitting. All of the songs on this record are like that.
- 5:27It is just continuously full force, very very loud. But I think
- 5:32that we move you through some different different places in these next two singles that
- 5:36are about to come up. Maybe a bit groovyer and maybe a bit more
- 5:41a bit more happy on the one after, but yeah, that's sort of
- 5:46the vibe. Tell us more about the album made. Have you got a
- 5:49title for it? And then release date? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
- 5:54so this we we haven't announced it to everybody yet, so we know that
- 6:00there's more singles coming up, but it'll be it will be called Dead End
- 6:04Rodeo and it will be coming out on June seventh. And yeah, it's,
- 6:11as I said before, very chaotic, very intense, and can't wait
- 6:16to share it with everybody when the time comes. I want to go into
- 6:20the punk side of things a been more mate, Like you said that you've
- 6:24tried your return to your punk roots on the whole of the new EP.
- 6:27Like a lot of people say that punk's more of an attitude than the style
- 6:30of music. So how do you actually embrace that to go back to the
- 6:33punk style? Like is it Is it the attitude that you go into it
- 6:36with? Is it the attitude you write songs with? Ah? Man,
- 6:41I mean I think it's I think I think it's such a tough thing.
- 6:45I mean, I think I think even in it's punkin itself is a bit
- 6:50paradoxical, right because from my understanding, punk is not it's it's just anti
- 6:56anti government and a lot of those sorts of things that it's sort of anti
- 6:59established. But punk it itself has sort of become an establishment. So what
- 7:03is the attitude at the end of the day. So I don't know,
- 7:08And I mean, you look at you look at people like the Sex Pistols
- 7:12and like uh Fugazi, and they are both considered punk deed and they don't
- 7:17really even fit into the same realm. At the same time, they are
- 7:21their own elements. But I guess, I guess our punk roots it definitely
- 7:28comes from the music more than any sort of attitude. It's I think everybody
- 7:32can hear when they hear a punk song. Is sort of sort of my
- 7:38mindset about it. And I heard it for the first time and I was
- 7:40like, Okay, this is a punk song, so we'll go with that.
- 7:43We'll go. Yeah. Very Blue's still a relatively young band. Haven't
- 7:49only started back in twenty twenty, mate, So describe your musical journey as
- 7:54a band to this point. Yeah, absolutely, so a quick on it.
- 8:01The band was originally started out of the death of another band. If
- 8:05you've heard that story a million times before, it's anyway. So yeah,
- 8:11we initially started and at the time, somebody who was pretty close to me
- 8:18passed away, and I just thought that it was pretty relevant to me at
- 8:22that point in time to get an album out. I always wanted to get
- 8:26an album out before I was eighteen, So I managed to do that with
- 8:31our first album, and like said Ghosts two years ago, which you am,
- 8:37I in twenty twenty two as well, pretty much consistently the same lineup
- 8:43up until last year Bassis left to go to New York. We got a
- 8:46new basis then, and then we have recorded this new project that will be
- 8:52coming out soon and it's yeah, it delves into both elements of the first
- 8:58two hours, but I think it builds on it so so much more and
- 9:03I think it's it's Yeah, it's the mest shuit we've ever done. And
- 9:07you've got some live shows planned to sort of break in the album. Yeah,
- 9:15yeah, absolutely so we are. We're planning in New Zealand tour for
- 9:18sure. We're trying to figure out whether Australia is possible again because I'd love
- 9:24to make it back over. It was super fun to do the shows that
- 9:26we did in twenty twenty two to support the last album. So yeah,
- 9:31fingers cross for that. Ye right, well, thanks very much for your
- 9:35time today. The single Hot Garbage is out, now, can you tell
- 9:39us when the next single is going to be out so people can say Nextflox?
- 9:41Absolutely so the next single will be out March fifteenth called Cardboard Box Office.
- 9:48It's a lot Grooviyer definitely takes more inspiration from like early two thousand's sort
- 9:54of indie stuff ala Artic Monkeys or The Strokes, And I yes that that
- 10:01tracks awesome and I cannot wait for people to hear that as well. All
- 10:05right, brother, well you take carry yourself, might have looked forward to
- 10:07hearing the new stuff, and hopefully you do make it back at or even
- 10:11get to catch up for beer. Absolutely that sounds great. Thank you so
- 10:13so much for having me again. Having a hard time with the back around
- 10:16manus or not in your waist, new achieves confidence, So stop having a
- 10:26hard time. Put it into the blows you look more on finally realizing you
