Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks and all the nerds in between.
• 0:13
My name is Megan and I am here with another character breakdown
• 0:15
today and I will be honest with you, it is not an underrated
• 0:19
character by any means. He's just one of my favorites
• 0:23
and I feel like I don't get to talk about him enough.
• 0:25
So here we are to discuss Remy Laboe AKA Gambit.
• 0:29
Before I get started, be sure to like and subscribe.
• 0:31
So don't miss anything else I put out because I put out so
• 0:33
many things that I think you'll really dig.
• 0:36
Gambit's first appearance was an X-Men annual #14 in 1990, but
• 0:41
his first full appearance was an Uncanny X-Men #266 in June of
• 0:45
1990. He was created by Chris
• 0:47
Claremont, Mike Collins, and Jim Lee.
• 0:51
Remy Laboe, the mutant who'd grow up to be Gambit, had a very
• 0:55
rough start. He was abandoned at birth
• 0:58
because of his glowing red eyes, and then straight up kidnapped
• 1:02
from the hospital by members of the New Orleans Thieves Guild.
• 1:06
They called him LED Diable Blanc, the White Devil, because
• 1:10
they believed he was the prophesized child who had one
• 1:14
day unite the city's rival guilds.
• 1:17
Instead of raising him themselves, they handed him off
• 1:20
to a gang of St. Thieves who taught him how to
• 1:22
survive and steal. When he was about 10, Remy tried
• 1:27
to pickpocket Jean Luc Labeaux, who just happened to be the
• 1:32
patriarch of the Thieves Guild. Rather than punish him, Jean Luc
• 1:36
took him in and adopted him. As a kid, Remy also met
• 1:39
Belladonna Boudreaux, a daughter of the head of the Assassin's
• 1:43
Guild, the Thieves Guild's longtime enemy.
• 1:46
The two grew close, and Remy fell for her so hard.
• 1:51
As a teenager, he took on dangerous jobs to prove himself.
• 1:54
1 mission sent him to a Weapon X facility in Canada to steal
• 1:58
Nathaniel Essex's diary. He escaped during the chaos of
• 2:02
Weapon X breakout, but what he saw in the facility horrified
• 2:06
him so much that he burned the diary instead of handing it
• 2:09
over. Essex accepted his excuse but
• 2:12
hinted they'd have a future together.
• 2:15
At 17, Remy went to Paris to steal the Cheating Star pendant
• 2:20
as a part of a trial to enter the Thieves Guild elite ranks.
• 2:25
Things got complicated when he met Genevieve Darcineau, who's
• 2:29
also trying to steal the pendant.
• 2:31
After saving her from Sabretooth, Remy romanced her,
• 2:35
only to eventually steal the pendant himself.
• 2:37
Sabretooth then kidnapped both Genevieve and Remy's foster
• 2:41
brother Henry. Forced to choose, Remy saved
• 2:44
Henry. Genevieve fell to her death so
• 2:48
his bruised before hoes or whatever you could say to secure
• 2:54
peace between thieves and assassins guilds.
• 2:57
Remy was arranged to marry Belladonna, but her brother
• 3:01
Julian challenged him to a duel. Remy took him out in
• 3:05
self-defense and was banished from New Orleans to preserve the
• 3:09
fragile truce. Believing Belladonna wouldn't be
• 3:13
happy in exile, he left her behind.
• 3:16
From there, Remy wandered the world as a master thief, using
• 3:20
his mutant ability to charge objects with explosive kinetic
• 3:23
energy, usually playing cards. It's his thing.
• 3:27
When his power started spiraling out of control, he turned to Mr.
• 3:31
Sinister for help. Sinister surgically reduced his
• 3:34
power, putting Remy in his debt. That debt led to one of the
• 3:39
darkest chapters of his life since they had him assemble the
• 3:42
Marauders and LED them into the Morlock tunnels without telling
• 3:46
him it was supposed to be a massacre.
• 3:49
When Remy realized the truth, he tried to stop it, but Sabertooth
• 3:52
nearly took him out. The only person he managed to
• 3:55
save was a young Morlock girl who would later become the X-Men
• 3:59
  Marrow. Eventually, Remy crossed paths
• 4:03
with Storm of the X-Men, who at the time had been turned into an
• 4:07
amnesiac child. He helped her escape the Shadow
• 4:11
King, and when she was restored, she sponsored him to join the
• 4:15
X-Men. He soon fell in love with Rogue.
• 4:18
We all know about. What do they call Romy?
• 4:22
Romy. They call call these two Romy.
• 4:24
That's their ship name I guess. The problem?
• 4:27
Her powers made skin to skin contact dangerous so they could
• 4:31
never touch. The feelings were mutual, but
• 4:33
the curse was very real. Over the years, Remy's past kept
• 4:38
catching up with him, especially his role in the Mutant Massacre.
• 4:42
Magneto once put him on trial, and then when the truth came
• 4:46
out, Rogue left him stranded in Antarctica.
• 4:49
He barely survived, struck strange deals to get home, and
• 4:53
eventually found his way back to the X-Men.
• 4:57
Things only got stranger, as they tend to do.
• 5:01
He discovered an alternate reality version of himself
• 5:04
called the New Son, whose out of control powers had destroyed his
• 5:07
own world. The New Son haunted other
• 5:09
versions of Remy to prevent that fate.
• 5:12
In their final battle, Remy burned out his enhanced powers
• 5:16
to defeat him, returning himself to normal levels.
• 5:19
He was framed for murder, lost his powers, regained them, went
• 5:23
blind during a mission in China, which is also not the only time
• 5:27
he goes blind, had his sight restored, became a teacher,
• 5:30
struggled through countless breakups and reconciliations
• 5:34
with Rogue, and even briefly became Apocalypse's Horsemen of
• 5:38
  Death. Which I think that's what's
• 5:41
going to happen in X-Men 97 Season 2.
• 5:44
And I know I'm not alone in that.
• 5:45
So anyone else that thinks that's happening, you're my
• 5:48
people. Though he tried to resist the
• 5:52
mental tampering, He became enslaved while still clinging to
• 5:55
pieces of himself, insisting that he was both Death and
• 5:59
Gambit. He was eventually restored, but
• 6:02
  Death persona never fully disappeared.
• 6:06
Remy drifted between hero and thief more than once, pulling
• 6:10
off heists, getting tangled with crime Lords, mystical artifacts,
• 6:14
  interdimensional monsters, and former lovers.
• 6:18
He was framed again, blackmailed, shot, nearly killed
• 6:22
like multiple times, and even secretly became a global Guild
• 6:25
master for the Thieves Guild. He rejoined different X teams,
• 6:30
joined X Factor, and repeatedly tried to build things with
• 6:34
Rogue. They even went undercover for
• 6:36
couples therapy, forced to relive each other's
• 6:39
perspectives. After a failed wedding between
• 6:43
Kitty Pride and Colossus, Remy proposed to Rogue on the spot.
• 6:46
And this time, it's stuck. They got married.
• 6:50
Their honeymoon in space was interrupted by the sheer crisis
• 6:53
involving Xandra and the bioengineer, daughter of
• 6:56
  Professor Xavier and Empress Lelandra.
• 7:00
Rogue refused a quick fix for her powers, determined to
• 7:04
control them herself. Later, the couple got dragged
• 7:08
into the Mojo verse and trapped into a genre hopping fake
• 7:12
realities where Rogue kept taking out Gambit as part of
• 7:16
Mojo's twisted programming. And with hope from Spiral, they
• 7:19
broke free by the end of it all. After time in space, alternate
• 7:23
  realities, possession, betrayals, near apocalypses,
• 7:27
Remy and Rogue finally returned home, married, still
• 7:30
complicated, but together. And before diving back into the
• 7:33
superhero chaos, Remy made sure they took a few uninterrupted
• 7:37
hours for themselves. But no matter how wildlife gets,
• 7:40
Gambit is always been two things at heart, a thief and a
• 7:45
romantic, and we all thrive with that.
• 7:49
Most recently, Gambit and Rogue are at Haven House in Louisiana
• 7:54
and Uncanny X-Men by GAIL Simone, which you absolutely
• 7:59
should check out. It's fantastic, and he is.
• 8:05
I don't want to spoil it if you haven't read it, but things of
• 8:07
his past do come back to haunt him.
• 8:11
Him and Rogue are stronger than ever and it's just been
• 8:15
fantastic to have them back. So yeah, that is my breakdown of
• 8:20
who Remy Laboe, AKA Gamba is. I hope you enjoyed this episode
• 8:25
and I hope you'll write, like, and subscribe.
• 8:26
With that being said, have a marvelous day.
