- 2:35That's a minute. I'll give you the identification Joe Identification Bureau Captain Roberts.
- 2:43This is the pullman guy Web captain on the riverfront beat. What's up?
- 2:46A couple of fissionmen? Just a cross out of the river down with the
- 2:50lowth on wall don huh? Yeah? And see did you identify the corpse?
- 2:54No? Yes, the man American about twenty five of where's the corpse?
- 3:00Now? Laying on the bank beside the whar I got the fishermen in
- 3:04garden until I get back. Okay, Web, hop back and stay there.
- 3:07I'll be down in about five minutes. If anyone comes nosing around,
- 3:09hold them. Also got a short call card to pick me up in front
- 3:19to get the Williams and Murphy. We're making an investigation down on the river.
- 3:38Where's it? Web? This way, sir, you better use your
- 3:39light. Captain, there's black as pitch down. There aren't there any street
- 3:44lights around here, no, sir, when you pass three blocks back,
- 3:46was the last one? In spite of the river isn't used very much where
- 3:50there's wark. You spoke up a low sun one. Yeah, over there,
- 3:53it's not used anymore except by a few Chinese fishermen. You say,
- 3:57fishermen found the body, Yes, sir, I got their names. Now
- 4:00this is and let him go where they find it under the wharf, sir.
- 4:02Was weighted down with iron. Must have been pitched off the wharf.
- 4:06That's what I figured, sir. Here's the body captain under hand here,
- 4:12Williams, and we'll drag it out of the water a little farther. Yes,
- 4:15sir, he that water looks black shit. Yeah, splash light on
- 4:20the web, young fellow, wasn't he. Yeah, I've never seen him
- 4:24before. No, sir, don't see what he has in his pockets and
- 4:27nothing's there. I went through them while I was waiting for you, man.
- 4:30I found this scrap of paper. That's all. That's it. How'd
- 4:32you light over here, Williams? Right, it's like a piece of paper
- 4:36sack. Yeah, This writing on a two captain a Chinese name sun yet.
- 4:42Key, Have you heard the sun yet? Key? Yeah, he's
- 4:46supposed to be a big shot down here in Chinatown. Never saw him,
- 4:48though. This guy's got a bump on his head, and that's pretty plain.
- 4:54What happened? You're meet it with murder? Sir? We got a
- 4:56dead man here. What does it look like, post office, Captain?
- 5:00He's a black silk or do you find it in his hand? Looks like
- 5:02it was torn off the struggle. Well, a couple of you boys stay
- 5:06until the wagon gets here. We will try to identify this guy down at
- 5:09headquarters. You come with me, Webbon right out your report, Yes,
- 5:13sir, identification gar a Captain Roberts, Oh, hello, Commissioner. No,
- 5:36sir, we haven't identified him yet. It's like it'll be another one
- 5:40of those Chinatown mysteries. Yes, sir, I will come in, Robert.
- 5:48Yeah, I'm Ferguson, No Perguson, Government of Narcotic Detailed. Oh
- 5:53yes, thanks you tell Us did some work for us a while back on
- 5:56the Dope Raide. The Chief sent me over to enlist your help again.
- 6:00Sure, what's up? Another raid now? This time missing man? Who
- 6:02is he? Tommy wood Race on the cover man he's been missing two days.
- 6:06Now. Where'd you last see him? China Town? He went into
- 6:10a restaurant down on Trent Street near the river. As far as we know,
- 6:12he never came out. Did you search the place? Yes? Who
- 6:15langs in? The Chinaman who runs it says Woods never came in at all.
- 6:18What did this Woods look like? Oh? He was a young fellow,
- 6:21about thirty, weighed about one hundred and thirty pounds, blonde hair,
- 6:26gold front two. Yes. Have you seen him not less than five minutes
- 6:29ago. We've been trying to identify him for the last twenty four hours.
- 6:31You mean he's dead. Somebody hit him over the head and toss him into
- 6:34the river at the foot of Trent Street. Are you sure he's in the
- 6:38mortgage? You care to look him over? Wait a minute, how was
- 6:41this man dressed? Cheap linen suit, yellow shoes, red tie. That
- 6:45was Tommy all right. Here's something we found in his pocket, scrap of
- 6:47paper the name of Sun yet key on it. In his hand. We
- 6:53also found this piece of black silk with a golden broidery. It's like a
- 6:56part of a Chinese robe. In his watch pocket, we found a few
- 6:59grains of all colored up right. That's interesting. Yeah, Captain Roberts,
- 7:04Tommy Woods was killed by an opium gang we've been trying to round up for
- 7:08the last six months. He's the second man we've lost. He got any
- 7:11evidence in the gang, nothing direct. We've been told that this son yet
- 7:14Key is the head of it. We also have reason to believed that the
- 7:16opium is dispensed from the rear of Fu Lang Sinned restaurant. Why didn't you
- 7:20send a crude erector place? Haven't enough evidence? This sonyat Key is a
- 7:25very clever man. Important stuff direct from Persia. I thought all opium games
- 7:29from China a fallacy. Captain. Persian opium of good quality contains from ten
- 7:34to fifteen percent of morphine, and Chandhu made from Persian opium would contained to
- 7:39have twenty five percent. That's why sonyat KEI deals exclusively in Persian opium.
- 7:44We can break him, We break the ring. Why did you get him
- 7:46then? No evidence? Our men can't get near him, some doubt if
- 7:49he even exists. How about one of our boys, no better? They
- 7:54seem to be able to spot a colp a mile off. Hey, I
- 7:57got it. How about a woman we thought of that too, but the
- 8:00chief vetoed it too dangerous. I know someone who'll give her a right arm
- 8:03to bust at dope ring who our police matron carry. Welch. She lost
- 8:07a younger brother down there on the river front about a year ago. A
- 8:11narcotic praise chinaman shot him. Do you think she'd take the risk? Sure,
- 8:15she'd love it. All right, Robert, we'll see that. Carry
- 8:18Welsh gets the chime, follow him, all right, missus. Welch,
- 8:39there's a restaurant, got ahead. You enter the same door, walk to
- 8:41the back. You'll steal to the door with Chinese blasters on us. Go
- 8:45through that door and ask for sun yet keys. Understand everything as well.
- 8:48Yes, yeah, here's a ten dollars business mark bun now as you can
- 8:54make a buy of opium, walk out the same door you came in,
- 8:58Roberts, and I will rush back recover the money. Your job is to
- 9:01get away with the dope, I understand. Now. If you get into
- 9:03trouble, call for us. We'll be sitting in the back of the rest
- 9:05offeating. But of course don't recognize us when you come in. Yes,
- 9:09sir, all right, give us about five minutes to get inside. This
- 9:16Foo length Sin who runs the place is a crafty fellow. I'll never get
- 9:20the idea he's not smart. He speaks English better than you or I.
- 9:24I've heard him also graduated from one of our colleges. Yes, here we
- 9:28are. I'll talk to him. That's a warning gong. It sounds whenever
- 9:33police enter the place. Becomes foo lengthin. Well, hello, foo lengths
- 9:37in. It is with much pleasure that this lowly person again has the honor
- 9:41of being visited by the police. Wise guy, aren't you, God say,
- 9:46in a realm of fools, it is easy to be wise. They're
- 9:48not interested in what you're he then, God say, you don't like it
- 9:52very much when we drop in on you that way, do you? It
- 9:54is written, my dear Lukeenant, that he that excited anger is a fool.
- 9:58He's with tortoise with anger is still a greater one. It should also
- 10:03be written to langs in it is unwise to arouse the anger of the police.
- 10:07This is Captain Roberts from headquarters. I am deeply honored by your presence,
- 10:11Captain. What may this lowly servant do for you? No, we're
- 10:15just down looking around full lengths in it is written that fate has no pity
- 10:20for them who take needless risks? What do you mean by that? Nothing,
- 10:22my dear captain. Nothing, Captain, and I came down for dinner.
- 10:26I am honored the cable for the occasion. Yes, in the back,
- 10:31where we can keep an eye on you, it shall be as you
- 10:33wish. I count the boilis You have them well trained, haven't you?
- 10:39Hey? What are all these fancy grains of rice? Merely a custom of
- 10:43my ancestors? Ceremonial rice, ceremonial rise. Eh. Yes, each grain
- 10:48is carefully polished and painted by hand, and placed in one's robe until the
- 10:52day of its tonement. Quite a job to paint all those grains by hand,
- 10:56isn't it. It is written that the work of the idol is here.
- 11:01Your table is ready, Lieutenant, Oh thank you. Come on,
- 11:03Captain, I need the word of them. You better get back to our
- 11:05table in a hurry. This is wealth, will be coming in to make
- 11:07the buye here, this is it. I'll slip face in the front.
- 11:13Hey, where did I see those rice grains before? In Tommy Wood's pocket?
- 11:18Dash it say? And this is Welsh. Look at your menu.
- 11:20Robert hmm. She walked right through without looking right or left. Roberts for
- 11:26the first time, that warning gong didn't sound good. Maybe you should be
- 11:31able to swing it. She makes a buye. We'll take in everybody in
- 11:35this joint. I've men outside to surround the place. It's the first sign
- 11:37of trouble. Good lord Gong. Who was that woman's screens? Come on,
- 11:41carry Welch is in trouble. Through the door right here. The door's
- 11:46knocked. Take your turn, break it in. It's open. Come on,
- 11:52black pitching here, better be careful. Wait a minute, what's time?
- 11:54Carry welch. She's hurt. Yeah, give me a hand and knocked
- 11:58out? Look out? What is that a knife? It just missed you?
- 12:01By name Fi behind those curtains. There he is in the back room.
- 12:03Sonya, yeah, yeady, and he's coming for you. Yeah,
- 12:05he's still moving. Give it to him again. Yeah, the gud won't
- 12:07stop him's still moving. It's no use. You might as well be shooting
- 12:11blanks. Now here's an act there. Take that to yell well, I'll
- 12:16be wax. It's a wax figure on the track. I wonder we couldn't
- 12:22find Sanya Kee. He was a wax figure. It's hollow inside. I
- 12:28got it. Whoever is passing up this door is using this figure so he
- 12:31wouldn't be recognized. He spoke to the peddler and passed out the dope through
- 12:33this wax figure up front. And here's a tin of opium. Well,
- 12:37what do you know about that? Here's something else. Look, Captain,
- 12:41well, I'll be all right for lengthin put him up about it. Yeah,
- 12:56there has been trouble. It is what I think is that one full
- 13:01length stained restaurant has been caught selling opium under the name of sun yet Ki
- 13:05and has been caught. It has written that obstinacy is the firmness of un
- 13:09reason. Oh yes, you had a pretty color gamed Joe. You use
- 13:13that white figure so nobody could see your face. You even had it fixed
- 13:16so it would move. You didn't pool us. One does not have to
- 13:20fool I've listened to another your Chinese flats. Look here, this is what
- 13:26caught you and linked you with the murder of Tommy Woods. Right, ceremonial
- 13:31rice. One of Captain Robert's bullets cut through your row. You spilled a
- 13:33trail of colored rice from the back room around the corner and back in here.
- 13:37I'm sorry for linthin, but we've got you dead to right. It
- 13:43is said that fate writes with an invisible hand, said quarters right, Hello,
- 14:05Tim, send a wrecking crew down to Fu Lang Sin's Chinese restaurant on

- 16:34to day. Hell, the worst is all over now, Chief, not
- 16:38to think you better get some sleep. Sleep. Oh, I'm good for
- 16:42the rest of the day, all right. Chief, that you've been up
- 16:45two days and nights now, sir, Yes, I'm must logan to see
- 16:51you teef. All right. Sent them in and I don't worry about me.
- 16:53Peter's not great with a terrible thing, but it looks like we have
- 16:56a situation well under control. Come in. Yes, I'm Spender Logan investigator
- 17:04for the major insurance company Logan Captain Peter. Thank you. How do you
- 17:08do, Peter? I'm glad to know you. Our company is making adjustments
- 17:11from paying policy just as rapidly as possible in the Hammonsville quake. Good that
- 17:15from speed relief work. We realize that, however, in hurrying to pay
- 17:19all claims, it's necessary to increase our vigilance you mean against fraudulent claims.
- 17:25Yes, any major disasters such as this always has its share. My company
- 17:29wants to pay all legitimate claims as soon as it can, but it's my
- 17:32job to see that there are no frauds. It's too large a job for
- 17:36one man, so I'm appealing to you for one or two men from your
- 17:40office to speed things up. Otherwise claimants will be forced to wait their turn.
- 17:44Well that's what you want from my man. Well, they will be
- 17:47asked to assist only in cases where our investigators can't handle the situation. Take
- 17:52this case, for instance. Pull up a chair Peter, Yes, sir,
- 17:56Now here's a typical case. The case of Ward Williams. Williams and
- 18:00his brother on the small shop on White Street, right in the center of
- 18:03the earthquake district. The shop, not insured, is in ruins. However,
- 18:07William's brother, Hugh Williams, is heavily insured with our company, you
- 18:11mean life insurance. Yes, late, yesterday rescuers pulled the body from under
- 18:17the ruins. This Ward Williams claims that it's the body of his brother.
- 18:21He identified it in one of the temporary mores. He also produced a fifty
- 18:26thousand dollar policy and demanded the immediate payment. That's not strange, No,
- 18:30that part of it isn't. However, I was present when Williams identified the
- 18:36body but the clothes and coos. He appeared greatly grieved, but another merchant
- 18:40asked him if he was sure that the body was out of his brother.
- 18:42Williams was shaken and answered in a menacing tone, Sure it is, and
- 18:48nobody better say it isn't. Now. It's been my experience that anyone who
- 18:52has the least possible reason to believe a relative alive will grasp at the hope
- 18:57of any suggestion to that effect. Yes, that's right. Not only that,
- 19:02but I took the other merchant aside and asked him why. He suggested
- 19:06that the body might not beat you Williams. And he told me that as
- 19:08he the merchant ran from his store, he thought he saw you Williams and
- 19:11his brother run into the street. Oh, were there any other employees in
- 19:15the shop at the time of the quake? No, but we have only
- 19:17Williams work for that. What are you proposed to do well in this particular
- 19:21case, I propose to enlist your aid in finding you Williams, whom I
- 19:25believe to be still alive. You mean you believe him to be in a
- 19:27proper his brother to collect the insurance. Yes, in which case finding him
- 19:32will prove very difficult if he would naturally go into hiding until after the claim
- 19:36had been paid. Well, if our cooperational speed relief, I'll be glad
- 19:41to sign a few men to him. Well, thank you. Just as
- 19:42a star a chief, I'd like to take a crack at this Williams case.
- 19:47All right, Peters, if you have any ideas, and I'm sure
- 19:48that mister Logan would be grateful for your assistant. Indeed, I will all
- 19:52right, Just give me this William's address and I'll soon have a report for
- 19:55you. Yes, sir, I got some ideas of my own on this
- 19:59thing. Yes, mister Williams. Oh, yes, you're mister Ward Williams.
- 20:29Yes, I am Captain Peter at Central Police Station. Little matter I
- 20:33would like to talk to you about, certainly, Captain, come in,
- 20:37get down here, Captain. Oh, thanks, I can't stay long,
- 20:41mister Williams. One of our patrolmen picked up a man about forty five who
- 20:44had been struck by a hit and run driver. And this man regained consciousness.
- 20:48We asked his name, and he claims he is Hugh Williams. That
- 20:51doesn't know where he lives. Hugh. The doctor says he's suffering from amnesia,
- 20:55loss of memory. And I thought he might be your brother, my
- 20:57brother, Hughes. Did. I saw him with my own eyes as they
- 21:00pulled his body from the wreckage of my store. You're positive in your identification,
- 21:04I am well. I guess that's that. This fellow's name may be
- 21:08Hugh Williams, but he's probably not the person this adjuster thinks he is.
- 21:14Adjuster. Yeah, a fellow named logan investigator for the major insurance company.
- 21:18You see. His idea is that during the confusion of the quake, your
- 21:21brother ran from the building before it fell and was making his way to the
- 21:23city when he was struck by an automobile. I'm sorry, Captain Peters,
- 21:26but my brother was buried yesterday. This other is a case of mistaken identity.
- 21:32Yeah, that's what I fakured, mister Williams. A fellow oft to
- 21:33know his own brother. But the insurance company isn't taking any chances during a
- 21:37time like this. The investigator is going to have a talk with this fella
- 21:41tomorrow morning. Poor guy won't last long, and the adjuster figures he'll talk
- 21:45before he dies. You say he's in the hospital, yeah, rich one,
- 21:49I don't know. I saw the name in the paper, but I'm
- 21:52not sure. Why are you interested in? Oh no, no, well,
- 21:59I'm sorry I bothered you, mister Williams. That's all right, Oh
- 22:02so long. I'm sorry about your brother. Thanks. Well, how'd you
- 22:12take it? It's like I thought he would logan. He was startled when
- 22:15I sprung it on him, and he sort of calmed down. Just before
- 22:18I left. He tried to ask, unconcerned, like where this man was
- 22:22Oh, he's interested. All right, You hit it Peters, making him
- 22:25think that his brother was struck by hit and run driver. There is one
- 22:26way of finding out just how sure he is that the man found in the
- 22:30ruins was his brother. Yeah, and I figured that if Ward Williams knows
- 22:33his brother is alive, he'll try to see him and shut him up.
- 22:36Right, you say? He asked which hospital man was in? Yeah,
- 22:38and I told him I didn't remember, but I saw it in a newspaper.
- 22:41He'll watch every paper that comes out. Come on, where are you
- 22:45doing now? I give the next edition of the Sun a very interesting little
- 22:48article. You get the paper, Yeah, it's the home edition, the
- 23:08one Williams will most likely read. Oh good, let's see it. It's
- 23:14on page one that so who gave it to them? Oh? Man near
- 23:18death insists he is not dead. There's a headline for you. An unidentified
- 23:22man about forty five lies dying in Providence hospital, insisting that his name is
- 23:27Hugh Williams. Police find that a Hugh Williams is alleged to have died in
- 23:32the recent Harmonsville earthquake and believe that the man is stuffering from metal attacks as
- 23:37the result of being struck by hit and run drivers sometime last night. That'll
- 23:41pull Williams out of anything. Well, yes, Providence Hospital, a chiefs
- 23:47office, Captain Peters, Oh, hell, Burt, what's that? When?
- 23:53All right? Be it over to the hospital and get into bed as
- 23:56we planned. There you are, you've got him worried already. The man
- 24:00I left to watch william says that he bought every edition of the afternoon papers
- 24:03and took them home. After about thirty minutes, he came out with a
- 24:04copy of the Sun in his pocket and started for the city in his car.
- 24:07Good. I told Burke to beat it to the hospital and get into
- 24:10bed. As we plan, we'll arrange to meet our friend mister Williams at
- 24:12the hospital and ask him why all the interests if he's so sure his brother
- 24:15is dead? Everything all, said Burke. Yeah, we'll get in the
- 24:33bed and pull the covers up around Geneck. That's did got the nurse instructed.
- 24:38Yes, when Williams asked to see the man, she needs to give
- 24:41him the room key and let him come alone. Good work. He better
- 24:45pull down that shade and turn off the light. We'll hide behind the screen.
- 24:48Williams should be here any minute, right, good, there's just enough
- 24:53light in the room to see the bed, y'all said Burke. This is
- 24:56a shine all right, Get over here with me, Logan. I figure
- 25:00we won't have to long to wait. Hey, I'm getting somebody's at the
- 25:08door. He's drying the knob. All right, we get the npon Logan
- 25:25right, say say what now, you know? Get his hand, Logan,
- 25:27his right hand. There's something in it. Give me that. Well,
- 25:30I'll be what is it? Cyanide? He was alway at the bump
- 25:33his brother off. Why are you crazy, fool? I never thought you'd
- 25:36go as far as murdered? Why not? The paper said he was going
- 25:38to die anyway. He's ran it on me. He ruined my chances of
- 25:41getting that fifty thousand. Now, you and your brother had this whole frame,
- 25:44didn't you. He was to disappear and you were to collect the insurance?
- 25:47Is that right here? Now? Who was the man whose body was
- 25:48found in the wreckage? A trip who'd come in looking for a hand of
- 25:52just just quick started and you tried to fool us with the wrong corpse.
- 25:55Huh, I guess we got back on you. Hey, wake up,
- 25:57Burke, brother, which a funny Yeah, you were checking us and we
- 26:04were checking you. Taking down Bark Welcome back. Well, a few parts
- 26:26in there particting Episode nine kind of uncomfortable to twenty first century years and in
- 26:33some ways a lot harsher racially than we would see in the post war era,
- 26:40which tended to scale things back a bit. The character, of course,
- 26:44was way overplayed with the use of proverbs and such the way that guy
- 26:48was going, and even Charlie Chan would have said he was overdoing it.
- 26:52Also, the police seemed kind of I ended bringing a wrecking crew to a
- 26:56place where they've just arrested someone but alone and I haven't obtained a conviction.
- 27:03Episode ten was an interesting scheme. I did find myself questioning why our criminal
- 27:10didn't go to where his brother was supposed to be at and see if he
- 27:14was still there. Going to the hospital would be silly, particularly if it
- 27:18turned out to be another Williams, which with that last name is definitely a
- 27:22possibility. Plus it was assuming a lot to assume that his brother would give
- 27:27him away, and if his brother did truly die, then he would get
- 27:32the insurance legitimately and just say he made a mistake in identification, but I
- 27:37guess a guilty conscience and all of that. Another thing I liked about that
- 27:41second episode was that the name of the major insurance company was a major insurance
- 27:48company. I just found that hilarious. I wonder if they bank with very
- 27:53large bank and if they would in the future contract their out there insurance investigations
- 28:00to very competent insurance investigators. And we also got a peek at what insurance
- 28:07companies did before they could call on yours truly, Johnny Dollar. All right,
