- 0:07can say, okay? Just because my dream seems to
- 0:09be telling me to ditch my family and move to the West Indies and
- 0:15stop working that maybe the dream message.
- 0:18I have to have. Now a negotiation between my
- 0:21ego, my responsibilities, my commitments, my integrity, and
- 0:26still honoring, the desire of the dream.
- 0:29If we We work with the dreams, they open us to knowing on a
- 0:33very different level. Welcome to sellers wolf a

- 0:51Lived a most astonishing animal, a lone wolf takea as he would be
- 0:57named survived and thrived in an And we're likely, no wolf had
- 1:01ever set foot in the process. He captured the hearts of a
- 1:05community and showed us even the most unlikely as possible.
- 1:09His story is not dissimilar to those of the individuals
- 1:12interviewed on this podcast. At some point, they each had to
- 1:15turn to their inner Lone, Wolf from there, they were able to
- 1:18lead. And Inspire my intention is to

- 1:43After our riveting conversation in the last episode Laurie Eve,
- 1:46the Char and I are back again. This time to drop more deeply
- 1:50into archetypes and into the world of dream interpretation,
- 1:54in a real-life dream consultation laurieann weaves
- 1:57the chaos of an hour's old dream to help me find within the
- 2:01threat of my shadow archetype and Stitch together.
- 2:04A logical Narrative of its message and I'm not talking
- 2:07about an oh, that's cute. But useless message instead, it
- 2:11has me turning tricks trying To maneuver a successful Landing,
- 2:15my head spinning with thoughts of integration.
- 2:17And at the potential magnitude of all the other dreams, I have
- 2:20given barely a passing notice. Dreamtime is not the only focal
- 2:25point of this conversation. We also continue with the
- 2:27exploration of archetypes that we began last episode and
- 2:31because of my dream interpretation, we specifically
- 2:34examine the concept of the Shadow archetype and those of
- 2:37the trickster and Mercury using her alchemical healing Wizardry,

- 3:51welcome back to the show. It's great to be here.
- 3:53Todd. I was looking forward to this me
- 3:56too. I don't know what we're going to
- 3:58talk about. I have a completely blank page.
- 4:00We segwayed into it from our last interview by saying, we're
- 4:04going to talk about dreams and dream work which I know nothing
- 4:08about other than I dream a lot and not more than.
- 4:13Once one of my healers or practitioners who said I should
- 4:17write my It's down and I have it.
- 4:21So I feel like I'm going to learn a lot.
- 4:24Good, well, yes, and a blank slate is such a great way to
- 4:30step into the dream world. I mean, one of the things that
- 4:37I, that I've been thinking a lot about lately because I think
- 4:43about dreams, it's a big world for me.
- 4:46It's important part of my work, some of the people I work with.
- 4:49It's the main focus of what we do.
- 4:53But I've been thinking a lot about how our culture is kind of
- 4:57addicted to being awake, addicted to that sort of
- 5:02activation of the thinking mind and the rational mind.
- 5:07And what we're looking at with dreams is opening to this there,
- 5:13a different level of seeing and knowing.
- 5:17So coming in with a blank, I like that what you said, like
- 5:20you don't go in no way. you go in, you know, being willing to
- 5:28discover Well, let's just go into it, tell me about the work
- 5:35that you do and and how it how it all comes together.
- 5:40Yeah, well, I mean, it's, you know, I started out as an
- 5:44acupuncturist so I mean I started out as a poet really
- 5:48that's where my earliest sort of Explorations were and then
- 5:55family way to being a gardener and then found my way to Chinese
- 5:58medicine and For me Chinese medicine.
- 6:02Among many other things is a kind of world that brings us
- 6:06into a different way of being and knowing More images stick
- 6:14and more mythical and, you know, less linear and rational so that
- 6:19it was a very comfortable place for me.
- 6:23But from there, I got into depth psychology and jungian depth
- 6:28psychology working with What's called the archetypes this
- 6:32domain of myth and symbol. And it started just to bring a
- 6:37lot of pieces together for me, what we were actually doing when
- 6:40we About say, for example, the elements in Chinese medicine,
- 6:45fire and water and Earth and metal and wood as as actual
- 6:51parts of our humanity. And when I began to understand
- 6:55that they're living symbols in our souls, a lot of pieces
- 7:01started coming together in my practice.
- 7:06And then somewhere in there, I just started getting fascinated
- 7:09by dreams. My patients would bring them in,
- 7:12or I have kept dream journals. I have boxes of them sequential
- 7:18through the years and their, I'm working on a book now, or I'm
- 7:23going back into the dream world as a source of kind of
- 7:27chronology and lineage. and it's just I mean, I think For me to
- 7:34say, okay, you know, I'm not a PHD psychologist.
- 7:39I'm a practitioner of Chinese medicine, I'm an alchemist on
- 7:42the Healer and to say, oh I can actually engage in this work was
- 7:51that was a was taking a stand for me and where I've come with
- 7:55that is actually this idea of liberating the dream.
- 8:01Because I think in our culture we have this idea that you need
- 8:04to study for 10 years and be 10 postgraduate analytical
- 8:11understandings to work with dreams but the truth is for me
- 8:16dreams or our Birthright. And every traditional healing
- 8:22modality has recognized dreams as a source of healing and
- 8:27information and wisdom. So I guess I have a pretty
- 8:32radical position right now of, you know, liberating the dream
- 8:37so that everyone can take back this amazing source that is free
- 8:43and we get every night, you know, it's like it comes to us
- 8:46and even the Chinese would say they come to us from the Stars,
- 8:50it's like a direct link. To Greater sources of
- 8:55information and it's freely available to every human being
- 9:00with a functioning nervous system.
- 9:04How did you go from? I can understand how poetry can
- 9:09arise organically and how gardening can.
- 9:12But how did that then transpire into Chinese medicine.
- 9:16Well, what was your influence? It was so it was a bit of a leak
- 9:26for me. I mean it wasn't well it wasn't
- 9:29just this Easy Flow from one to the other.
- 9:32Although for me, Chinese medicine is like gardening and
- 9:36it is like poetry when I'm in treatment room or when I'm
- 9:40working with it. But what happened for me was in
- 9:43addition to poetry, and gardening.
- 9:45I was a pretty impassioned. Radical activists all through my
- 9:4920s and Was in that state of kind of rage and beating my head
- 9:59against the wall and expending a lot of energy in what I would
- 10:03call the fight the fight mode. And by the my later 20s, I was
- 10:10pretty burned out already. I was feeling very disappointed
- 10:17that I mean, this was several decades ago, but I was feeling
- 10:20like we were moving Fast enough. I was already in a high state of
- 10:26alarm about the environment about the what I felt was
- 10:35misogyny of the culture and a good friend of mine.
- 10:40Said to me, you know, you need to try acupuncture.
- 10:44I was getting headaches, daily headaches and anxiety and but I
- 10:49was like, it's really nothing wrong with me.
- 10:51I don't know why I should We try acupuncture, but she said, well,
- 10:55you don't, you don't get it, you don't get it.
- 10:57This is like it's not just about fixing symptoms.
- 11:00It's it will touch you in all these different ways.
- 11:04So I got into Chinese medicine because it changed my life.
- 11:10My life, my first session, my practitioner cheated me at on
- 11:16liver 3, which, as you know, is a point to really A the liver
- 11:23and modulate when we called the wood element.
- 11:25And right there on the table, I felt so much of that rage that
- 11:30tension, it dissipated with the first treatment.
- 11:34And I felt like, I could smell the air, coming through the
- 11:39window. And I could hear in a way I
- 11:42hadn't heard in years and it's a gardener, and a poet.
- 11:46I was like, okay, yes, yeah, well, in there is the poetry.
- 11:52Tree of Chinese medicine because liver three.
- 11:54Taichung is the great Surge and soon as you had that treated,
- 11:59you felt this great surging of your energy and a release of it.
- 12:03So to speak, which is something that as you write about in your
- 12:07books, the language behind Chinese medicine, The Poetry of
- 12:11it is, It's extremely symbolic and how it functions and how it
- 12:18helps. And there are certain
- 12:19practitioners who. And I think you might be one of
- 12:22them who really live in that poetic world of it, because then
- 12:26you can, I feel more inspired and called you certain points in
- 12:32certain herbes based on the names.
- 12:34And especially if we go back into classical Chinese back to
- 12:38the characters of the points. So, it's really incredible how
- 12:43multifaceted the medicine is and how There's just so much more
- 12:50complexity to it than what we're used to in allopathic medicine.
- 12:55But anyway, that's that's a whole nother Divergent paths.
- 12:57Go down. Yes.
- 13:01I want to go back there because you said you were an activist,
- 13:06you're angry, you got burnt out after about a decade of being an
- 13:11activist and being angry because you just weren't seeing change
- 13:15that you wanted to see in the world.
- 13:17And Now, in retrospect. How do you think you could have
- 13:24done that differently? To bring about, not only a
- 13:31safer, more healing environment within you.
- 13:34But to actually catalyze more change outside of you.
- 13:39Have you ever thought about that?
- 13:42I think that I think about that every day, I think, could we
- 13:47have done something? Is there something that we
- 13:50missed? You know, those of us who were
- 13:52activists in the early 70s and I'm still and I'm, I'm also
- 13:57thinking this in contemporary terms, over anyone who is
- 14:01so-called fighting a fight because I see a lot of anger.
- 14:08I don't know if you're familiar with the work of David Hawkins
- 14:12but he's an incredible writer and he has a based on applied
- 14:17Kinesiology, he created a scale of emotions and the energetic
- 14:23frequency that those reverberate out into the world around us
- 14:27with love being the most positive.
- 14:30And I think guilt or shame being the most negative and anger.
- 14:38GE is somewhere in between it basically indicates that someone
- 14:45is coming alive within and there's something worth fighting
- 14:48for as opposed to apathy where they're just they've surrendered
- 14:51to everything. So anger is where they're
- 14:53starting to be a shift but they're still not reverberating
- 14:56out a positive frequency. That is going to positively
- 15:00impact other beings on the planet.
- 15:03It's still something that actually has a negative overall
- 15:06recourse. And it's not until we actually I
- 15:09think anger is the last step before we start to get into the
- 15:12positives. And so I'm seeing in the world
- 15:17feeling in the world. A lot of anger times.
- 15:20I'm even in that spot. I'm just trying to figure out
- 15:23how we can rise above those lower frequencies.
- 15:27I'm seeing a lot of action that's taken based on guilt.
- 15:30A lot of action that's taken based on shame, I'm seeing
- 15:34Society indoctrinating us too. Feel motivated by guilt and
- 15:40shame and to feel like we have to basically be branded with
- 15:45those identities and that if we don't recognize those then were
- 15:51were complicit, we're not helping the world were racist.
- 15:56Were you name it? Whatever it is that we are.
- 16:00And so, I'm just trying to figure out how can we rise above
- 16:02those lower energy levels? Because I I've said this before
- 16:06numerous times, I don't think, Think anything we do that is
- 16:10catalyzed by a negative energy is going to bring about a
- 16:14positive outcome. So in other words if I'm doing
- 16:17something to assuage my guilt that's the wrong reason to do
- 16:21it. Even if the act itself seems
- 16:24good on the surface if I'm doing it to avoid something - then I'm
- 16:28putting a negative energy out into the world.
- 16:31That's my belief anyway and I'm just trying to To kind of
- 16:37wrestle with that and figure out how we can do things from this
- 16:41place of more love ultimately. So that we're not being
- 16:46divisive, we're not being victims, and we are actually.
- 16:52As Gandhi says, we are being the change that we want to see in
- 16:56the world. Yeah, Well, I think that's why
- 16:59Benjamin and I lead with our tag line for a new possibility,
- 17:04which is that inner work leads to Outer change in the sense
- 17:09that any as you said, any real lasting, what I call negin
- 17:14Tropic. You know, Positive Growth
- 17:18promoting action depends on our own inner work in releasing and
- 17:25transforming alkalizing. Is the word I like to use those
- 17:32negative toxic. Energies or vibrations and
- 17:39Tropic attitudes, that's our work.
- 17:44That's the work that that we do in our community in a new
- 17:49possibility. That's the work of alchemy at
- 17:52South chemical healing. And I would say, you know,
- 17:55honestly, since that moment, where my acupuncturist released,
- 18:01you know, that great surge that Supreme rushing of the stuckness
- 18:07I was in with the Rage. That's been the focus of my
- 18:10work. so, that's Almost four decades.
- 18:19Now of trying to answer that very question that you're
- 18:23asking. How do we act skilfully?
- 18:29You know, not to become apathetic but also to not just
- 18:33perpetuate cycles of suffering. In the world, through our anger,
- 18:38or blame or guilt or fear, I would add fear yes, piano fear.
- 18:46and so, I think all the tools that we work with all the tools,
- 18:52the wisdom Traditions, give us, you know, pathways To to work
- 19:00with that question. And I would say, as far as very
- 19:03specifically the anger, which was the emotion I was stuck in
- 19:08and which we definitely see is, you know, rampant, we could say
- 19:13there's an anger pandemic on the planet that, if we look at, you
- 19:18know, the wisdom of Chinese medicine to say anger, you know,
- 19:23in its healthy expression, I loved what you said.
- 19:26It's a, it's a sprouting. It's a coming to life of the
- 19:29self. It's a emergence of me.
- 19:34That's, it's sort of positive, but then it's what we could say
- 19:38it's wisdom or its virtue is benevolence So ultimately what
- 19:45we're trying to do, how chemically is take that lead of
- 19:49anger and find within it, you know, the goals of benevolence.
- 19:56Yes. And when I sat with that and I,
- 19:59of course, like you, I sit with these things that I sit with
- 20:02them, I like, what were they saying?
- 20:05And then I look at the trees. And I, you know, if we think of
- 20:08the wood element as a surge as a pushed to reach the sun, you
- 20:14know, every tree is reaching upwards and downwards to get its
- 20:18nutrients and it's unlike, but if you look at a healthy Forest,
- 20:22the trees are also all in a kind of conversation of benevolence
- 20:28with each other. It's not like, oh, you know, one
- 20:33tree is going to grow. So another one, another one may
- 20:36not, but In the big picture of the forest, all the creatures
- 20:41are experiencing the benefit, the birds in the trees, you
- 20:46know? The like and the creatures who
- 20:49crawl on the trees, there's a sense of a I can get what I
- 20:54need, but it doesn't have to be at the expense of another.
- 21:01And I think that's what is, you know, that's the ultimate work
- 21:05here. Yeah.
- 21:06And with that anger, pandemic, you speak of, I think a lot of
- 21:10it is related to this pandemic. We also have of oxytocin
- 21:16deficiency, the last year and a half, we've been not allowed to
- 21:20have physical contact with one another and anyone who knows,
- 21:26what oxytocin is would understand that.
- 21:28But for those who don't, it's the love drug, it's the love
- 21:30hormone. That is naturally released
- 21:33within us. When we have intimate contact
- 21:36with another that's what a mother and a child bond with at
- 21:40when the child is first born. But just from giving someone a
- 21:44hug we can actually raise our oxytocin levels and raise our
- 21:49inner feeling of love. And I think with that we become
- 21:54more attuned to our shared humanity and without that We
- 21:59become again, very divisive and it's us against them and we
- 22:05focus more on what divides us rather than what unites us.
- 22:12Yeah, that benevolence the ultimate benevolence of life.
- 22:18I would say, I would just add to that, you know, for those of us
- 22:20who have kids or for me with my grandchild that, you know, we
- 22:26created this year, we were very committed to creating a bubble
- 22:30where we could be in physical contact, because I can't imagine
- 22:33not having that, but but at times, you know, when you can't
- 22:37nature is also a source. And I would say yes for people
- 22:42who have had to, you know, for immune week in individuals, or
- 22:49people who don't have that option of close family to stay
- 22:54physically in contact with nature is right there.
- 22:59Well, normally, it's right off for us and animals but as we
- 23:03also have learned during this past year and a half, sometimes
- 23:05nature is even taken away from people.
- 23:08There have been people who have been just Stuck inside.
- 23:12So I agree with you completely. There's it doesn't have to be
- 23:16inter human connection is just connecting with other beings
- 23:19other energies even the rocks and the earth and the trees.
- 23:25Yes. Yeah.
- 23:26Anyway. So it's we touched a bit last
- 23:31time and you mention it again earlier this concept of
- 23:34archetypes. But wondering if we can dive
- 23:39more into that, and if the archetypes have a role in the
- 23:44dream work that you do, as I said, I'm completely ignorant of
- 23:51DreamWorks. Oh yeah, no, that's a great
- 23:54question. The the to get kind of grab on
- 24:01in a, not an abstract you know, because archetype can start out
- 24:04as feeling like it's kind of an abstract idea that we have
- 24:10already imprinted in our brain and our nervous system.
- 24:16And the images that naturally form in a human being that there
- 24:20are symbols that we are actually born with their Genetic.
- 24:26So the I will look at one of the ways that I explain this is if
- 24:32you watch a child an infant coming into Consciousness, you
- 24:38know, so there's a very young infant already from the moment
- 24:42of birth and infant already has within them.
- 24:47This, what you would say, archetype for mother, So they
- 24:53infinite healthy infant will bond with a caregiver, you know,
- 24:58whether it's a mother. Father, you know, a caregiver
- 25:04that nurturing giving life affirming and protective being
- 25:12is an archetype already in us when we're born.
- 25:19And then as you watch a child grow, you see the fascination
- 25:23with water. The fascination with fire.
- 25:27It's, it's already in us as humans to be intrigued
- 25:34fascinated by the elements. So, those are also archetypes
- 25:40And, you know, just coming back to the etymology because I think
- 25:43etymology is helpful. What we're the word itself means
- 25:48first former in print, and we did touch on that, in our last
- 25:52conversation type. What it's actually from the word
- 25:57typos, the Greek word, which means stamp or imprint, So
- 26:02they're saying, like energy will naturally take these forms in
- 26:08our imagination in our dreams in our souls.
- 26:13So will naturally sort of relate to fire or relate to water.
- 26:19I can say to a patient in my treatment room.
- 26:22Yeah, your Earth Constitution type and even without them
- 26:26knowing Chinese medicine meant my patients.
- 26:29That's what I would notice. Would say, yes, you know Earth,
- 26:32I know myself. I feel Earthly.
- 26:35I feel Earthbound. Or if I say to somebody, I see
- 26:38was fire and I get it in the person feels like, I'm seeing I
- 26:44resonate with that fire in me. So to begin to work at that
- 26:52level means leaving behind a kind of rational linear
- 26:57quantitative approach to the world and being willing to go
- 27:03into a more imaginative, a more symbolic approach, more dreamy
- 27:09approach, I would say, can we get stuck in a certain
- 27:15archetype? And then negative outcomes as a
- 27:22result of that. Yes, what a back up and then
- 27:29come back to that. Okay?
- 27:33Yeah, just because I think in order to really that's a great
- 27:37question and I see it all the time and I work that just worked
- 27:40with it the other day with with someone, I was doing a session
- 27:43with By the way that getting stuck in the archetype is what
- 27:50Carl Jung called getting stuck in a complex.
- 27:55So some people know that were, you know, I've a money complex
- 27:58or I have a romance complex that's getting stuck in the
- 28:03archetype. That's getting a kind of fused
- 28:06embedded or what we say identified with the archetype so
- 28:11that I'm not in a free-flowing, relational growing.
- 28:15Being kind of attitude. I'm I'm actually being run by
- 28:20the archetype. So, just to back up.
- 28:29There are two basic primary archetypes.
- 28:34Which are we could say, yin and yang masculine feminine mother.
- 28:40Father, those are the we above that, we have the Dow, the
- 28:46Oneness, the universe, and then, and coming back to that little
- 28:49baby who's born, the baby comes in when you know, you see the
- 28:54first newborn in there, they're coming in with complete Unity,
- 28:58the Dow Oneness and then begins this attachment to the mother.
- 29:04A year then attachment to the Father Figure.
- 29:06So really, it's a primal part of us.
- 29:09But then those primary archetypes, start just dividing
- 29:13and dividing and dividing into we could say any infinite.
- 29:19Array of forms, including the father archetype divides into
- 29:24the king. The hero, the warrior, the
- 29:29mother archetype divides into the made.
- 29:33The Crone, the wise woman, the the mermaid archetype there,
- 29:39they just keep going, and You know, it doesn't matter.
- 29:44I can have a hero in me and you can have a maiden and you,
- 29:48they're not strictly defined by our biological gender, but we
- 29:54could, you know, say, as a woman, I might more easily
- 29:57identify or early on with some of those feminine archetypes
- 30:02young boy, might, you know, who's identified with his
- 30:06masculinity, would sort of Orient towards some of the
- 30:10masculine archetypes. But as Make sure we want to
- 30:14actually engage with the Contra sexual opposites within us as
- 30:20well and that's movement towards wholeness.
- 30:24So I just wanted to say that because in order to get to this
- 30:27idea of getting stuck in or overtaken by, you know, you kind
- 30:34of have to know, well, what could those be And if we want to
- 30:38say looking coming back to our conversation about the pandemic,
- 30:43we could almost say that our whole culture is stuck in the
- 30:48Warrior archetype in a sort of unhealthy way, like, even this
- 30:53morning Benjamin was reading to me from the paper and he read me
- 30:58this headline. And it, you know, there's Now
- 31:00new information about how the virus is mutating.
- 31:04And the CDC said we have to Go. The war is taking a different
- 31:09tack. So we're coming into this as a
- 31:15battle as a war, you know, who's going to win as opposed to
- 31:20saying, okay, let's get curious about this very strange.
- 31:26Strangely behaving pathogen that.
- 31:31Can we understand it? Can we be into not necessarily
- 31:36relate to it but not at the same time.
- 31:39Come into it. Like we are warriors, fighting.
- 31:42Your battle. That's one archetype of that
- 31:45getting stuck in that can be limited.
- 31:47Yeah, and of course, we've heard that time and time again, with
- 31:50the war on cancer, the war on AIDS, the war, on terrorism, the
- 31:55war on you name it, it's there and yeah, I got it.
- 32:00Also goes back to the energies that I was talking about earlier
- 32:03the frequencies that were putting out.
- 32:05If we are stuck in that war replacing, there's very little
- 32:09room for Love and War Yes. And that's so that's the
- 32:14archetype that has overtaken. What?
- 32:16I call mental Consciousness, it's the Trap of dualism.
- 32:21Where does victimization fall into that?
- 32:23Is that Part of this war mentality or is it somewhere?
- 32:30I think it's the other side of it because if one side is is
- 32:34winning the battle, you know, one sides the Victor and one
- 32:38side is going to be the victim. But aren't they.
- 32:42Also I feel like there's an in Twyman as well because it it
- 32:48seems like a lot of the anger is coming from those who feel
- 32:53victimized. They're not in an apathetic
- 32:56victimhood. That's a different state of what
- 32:59was me. There's no point I give up But
- 33:03they're in the state of their energy is it is it's a higher
- 33:06energy because they are motivated to take action but it
- 33:09seems that this action is being taken because they feel like
- 33:14they are a victim. And so it is an external action
- 33:19rather than the inner Alchemy rather than working from within
- 33:24to bring about then change outside.
- 33:27Well, I think that's the key. What you just said because if
- 33:31we're going to stay With this archetype inquiry. the what I,
- 33:37when I teach archetypes, the first thing I say is the
- 33:40archetype is amoral the archetype itself, doesn't live
- 33:47in the domain of human values. It doesn't care about my
- 33:54marriage or my commitments. It what the archetype is comes
- 34:01in is in service of life in service of the movement of life.
- 34:07So it can come in as you know, the avenging Warrior, you know,
- 34:12or it can come in as we're saying is these sort of wildly
- 34:16rampant rages or it can come in as Wood as an energy.
- 34:22That allows me to stand for what I believe in this centered way
- 34:28and how the archetype manifest in my life.
- 34:32Depends on. Just what you said.
- 34:34It depends on how I work with and how I relate to it and how I
- 34:40go inside myself and develop a relationship to it.
- 34:45If I don't yeah they'll run us, they're wild.
- 34:50They're Just as wild as a tornado, you know, they're just
- 34:54as wild as a hurricane. They they are.
- 34:56Those are the energies of the cosmos, you know, that come in
- 35:00and take form in the world, but we, that is the beauty of our
- 35:05Humanity that were given this opportunity to make that choice
- 35:10to turn inward. And actually say, how am I going
- 35:15to? Am I working with this?
- 35:18And again, I come back to that moment when I had that
- 35:20acupuncture point needle, it was a choice point.
- 35:26You know, am I going to just keep beating my head against the
- 35:29wall here and have daily headaches and digestive,
- 35:33disturbances and feel like my work isn't leading anywhere?
- 35:38Or am I going to look inside and see what else is being asked of
- 35:43me? How could I channel that energy
- 35:45different? And again in Chinese medicine,
- 35:49the other side of anger is vision and planning.
- 35:53It's opening my vision and having hope and seeing different
- 35:57possibilities. So all of what we're talking
- 36:01about, I think comes back to this idea that, you know, the
- 36:04it's the inner work that makes the difference on how things
- 36:09manifest on the outside and Dream Work is part of that in
- 36:15our work. For me.
- 36:17It's very much part of it for me.
- 36:20It's very much part of it. I mean, In there, one tool,
- 36:24there's many tools, but for me again, dreams have become a
- 36:28really important part of how I get to listen to what is, what
- 36:37is the deeper wisdom approach? For me dreams, open me to a
- 36:43different level of knowing and seeing You know, when you look
- 36:51at the word dream in Chinese the character, it's a, it's a
- 36:55picture of night needs night, the graphic, and then above,
- 37:01that is the picture of eyes. So we can say, from this Chinese
- 37:07perspective, there's an understanding and archetypical
- 37:10understanding that will see reflected in English as well.
- 37:15The dream's open us to a different kind of sight, a night
- 37:19sight. And then, when we look at the
- 37:24word in English dream itself comes from an Anglo-Saxon word.
- 37:29That means music But for me, the real he comes from the, the
- 37:38romance language is where the word is Rev, which is the same
- 37:43root as revelation. So, dream in French is Rev, and
- 37:48in the romance languages, it's going to this place of
- 37:52Revelation, which means information, that's revealed to
- 37:56us from a Divine source. and again, coming back to Chinese
- 38:03medicine and they say they're actually Spirits the one that's
- 38:07called the Holy Spirit, the spirit of the liver and the wood
- 38:12A vision of our opening to this dream world.
- 38:17These little Spirits go up to the stars at night, this is the
- 38:21myth and they bring down information from the stars from
- 38:26the galaxies right into our night sight.
- 38:32So again all this can sound very Fantastical and as I said a
- 38:37little abstract, but in my work in the treatment room, this is
- 38:42what happens that if we work with the dreams, they open us,
- 38:48they reveal information, open us to knowing on a very different
- 38:53level. It's learning to see what these
- 38:57other eyes. It's more of a Chinese medicine
- 39:01related question. But his absinthe fit into this
- 39:07at all wormwood Artemisia its kind of unlocks this dreamy like
- 39:13state, is there anything there? I don't know, it just popped
- 39:16into my head that's you're talking and no I mean I think as
- 39:20I said at the very beginning that all traditional medicines
- 39:25We guard dreams and accessing dreams.
- 39:29I mean, it's even in the Bible. Hmm.
- 39:32You know, there's no culture before our own modern culture
- 39:36that treated dreams, you know, with the same disregard, right
- 39:41in community tribal communities, people would Gather in the
- 39:45morning and talk about dreams. That's what Benjamin and I wake
- 39:51up and we're like, okay, what did you dream?
- 39:55And does the vision of the dreams?
- 39:57Is that similar than to the vision with things such as
- 40:02absinthe or with psychedelics? These tools to the dream world.
- 40:09Yes, it's I would say the psychedelics and this sort of
- 40:17use of plant medicine opens us to a similar domain of the
- 40:25psyche. But in my work and what I stand
- 40:31for is that we can open those. I so same night eyes, while
- 40:40keeping our daytime eyes also intact which is in a certain
- 40:45other way of saying that the work that I teach and the work
- 40:50that I do with my patients is about not dissolving.
- 40:56This hard earned critical mind or ego position.
- 41:02But rather being able to hold it simultaneously alongside the
- 41:08archetypal domain because again, remember the archetypes don't
- 41:13have a value system. They're just pure energy, pure
- 41:20information, pure kinds of onions, translucent, dated data
- 41:28from other domains. Now, so that it's one of the
- 41:33reasons why shamans who actually in traditional cultures were the
- 41:39ones who held the container during say an ayahuasca
- 41:43ceremony. They train for decades.
- 41:47Rigorously, it went through tremendous hardship.
- 41:52They were trained in as much rigor as that the most highly
- 41:57trained scientists in our culture because to actually hold
- 42:02The amount of energy that comes through from these levels.
- 42:06You really, really need to have the muscle So I you know, it's
- 42:13not that, I mean I think the plants want us to use them, they
- 42:16want to give us this information but my work is more focused on.
- 42:22Let's use, let's go to these domains.
- 42:26Let's learn to walk with them safely for anybody, anybody
- 42:32because we can also keep one foot in the daytime world.
- 42:37We can say, okay? Just because my dream seems to
- 42:40be telling me to ditch my family and, you know, move to the West
- 42:45Indies and stop working. You know, that maybe the dream
- 42:49message. What if I have to have?
- 42:52Now a negotiation between my ego, my responsibilities, my
- 42:57commitments, my integrity, and still honoring, the desire of
- 43:01the dream, So that's the distinction between, you know,
- 43:07going in to, you know, the hallucinogenic domain, where we,
- 43:13we temporarily let go of all of that and just dissolve into the
- 43:18dream world and actual Dream Work from the sort of
- 43:23perspective that I teach in use and they're both good.
- 43:27I mean, I'd like, I'm whatever gets us there, whatever opens
- 43:31our conscience but just to make that distinction.
- 43:34Especially as a practitioner. How does how do we?
- 43:37Yeah. How do you work with dreams?
- 43:40Walk us through this. There's yeah.
- 43:41Okay. So much crazy information that
- 43:43comes down dreams. Yes I had some weird dreams last
- 43:47night. I guess in price.
- 43:49Well I want to hear. I just I just remember waking up
- 43:53feeling all weirded out. There was this has the what only
- 43:58part I can remember. Actually there were a few parts
- 44:01I can remember. I was late to pick up my kids
- 44:03from school. And by like an hour.
- 44:06And so I was frantically racing down the highway at night time
- 44:13and I got there and it turned out I was on my bicycle and I
- 44:18went in to get my kids and my bike got stolen and it turned
- 44:21out. It was just someone taking it
- 44:22for a joyride and they came back and then we got into a bit of an
- 44:29argument I think. And then while we are arguing,
- 44:32my bike legitimately got stolen. Ellen.
- 44:35And it was just kind of this weird stuff that I woke up just
- 44:39going, what was all of that about?
- 44:41And then there was something about an address book that I had
- 44:47when I was like a kid at look like a Snoopy address book or
- 44:51something, that had my name on it and I don't remember it, but
- 44:54somehow it came into the mix as well.
- 44:57It was just all very strange. Right.
- 45:01So that's a great because you're good, you're going to make
- 45:04something of this. All right, well I'm going to
- 45:06start by saying so this is so often how it is.
- 45:10You wake up and you go. What was that craziness?
- 45:16You know, that can't be useful. Like so often people say this to
- 45:21me like I did you but I don't think it means anything or Often
- 45:28those very dreams are the ones that have the little bit of gold
- 45:33in them. So the other when I start
- 45:37working with dreams, the first thing I say is all dreams, come
- 45:41in service of healing and home as.
- 45:44So even this dream that you had last night that seems like
- 45:47chaotic and kind of crazy nonsense.
- 45:53There's something in that dream, Todd, that's that wants you to
- 45:58come into awareness of A shift. Or a need an opening of sight
- 46:12about something in your life. Okay, so that's the first thing
- 46:17when I hear that dream. Like how is this dream coming
- 46:21and service and feel of your healing and wholeness?
- 46:26And then the next thing I ask, you know, I say dreams, it's not
- 46:31about analyzing the dream or I'm going to go in there and I
- 46:36somehow know more than the dream or I'm going to figure it out,
- 46:39it's more like let me befriend this stream.
- 46:42Let me care about this dream and see what it might.
- 46:47What that dream is asking for from you.
- 46:52What is it desire? Because it wants something, then
- 46:58the other thing. So here's this is how I work,
- 47:01you know, then I go okay, dreams kind of could be about just
- 47:06digesting and metabolizing, something that happened
- 47:10yesterday or, you know, maybe a day or two ago, they can be
- 47:16about a bigger emotional block. It's going on that I haven't
- 47:24like been able to get at and then there's what Young calls
- 47:28the Big Dreams, the life dreams, you know, those are the dreams
- 47:32like you wake up and you go holy wow you know like the giant tree
- 47:41or you're out seeing as you know the great Storm of the Century
- 47:45coming across the ocean. So my sense of your dream is
- 47:50it's you know Oh, of the first and second I don't feel like
- 47:55again. I'm not saying like I'm sitting
- 47:57here in awe struck by your dream.
- 47:59Like whoa, which sometimes I am I can you know?
- 48:04And I'm sure you've had other dreams that are of that nature
- 48:07where, you know, they come back over your lifetime.
- 48:10But I would say this dream to knees, it feels like a dream
- 48:13about something. Maybe that happened this week
- 48:18that you're metabolizing, but also Large, it has quality of a
- 48:23larger emotional. Hmm.
- 48:28Quandary or pattern? That's asking to be shifted.
- 48:34That's my sense of it. So, the first thing I do, you
- 48:41know, I say the first benefit of working with the dream is that
- 48:43you even remembered the dream, Already just by you remembering
- 48:48it. It's working a little bit on
- 48:50your nervous system. It's showing you a little
- 48:53something. And then the second benefit is
- 48:56that, you told me the dream. So, the dream now is has an
- 49:00existence in life. It's by sharing it, you're
- 49:04beginning to care a little bit about it.
- 49:09I guess the next thing that I would ask you if you're willing,
- 49:13I mean you might not have come into this thinking, you were
- 49:15going to do a Dream Work analysis.
- 49:17But if you're willing like, maybe share a little bit about,
- 49:21is there any way that you could see that dream relating to
- 49:24anything happening in your real life or anything that happened
- 49:28this week? You're late to get the, get your
- 49:32kids to school. Not what my overall feeling of
- 49:39it. Is there were a lot of things
- 49:43that I don't resonate with and don't want to be around
- 49:51franticness because I was frantic while racing to get my
- 49:54kids and just that sense of being late I don't want to I
- 50:00just don't like the energy that arises from that I guess the GT
- 50:06Racing down a highway. I don't like highways.
- 50:09I would, if I could drive on country roads whenever I drive,
- 50:13perfect, get me off a highway going into a city.
- 50:17I was definitely in a city to pick up my kids and I same
- 50:20thing, I feel the same about City's, I don't need to ever see
- 50:22a city again. I'm just happy being in the
- 50:24country and even this building where I picked them up was all
- 50:28modern and glassy and city. Like, and it felt very sterile
- 50:34And so all of those things felt just kind of icky to me look.
- 50:39Yeah, so there's an ick feeling just like this, I don't know.
- 50:45Like this is not the environment I want to be M and then things
- 50:48seem to shift, I don't even know if it was the same dream even
- 50:52necessarily or but as far as I think it was the same because
- 50:56the the environment where my bike got stolen feels kind of
- 51:00similar. But that was a very we that was
- 51:05it was a very different thing but it was also it was, I guess
- 51:10there was some frustration that something like that, like my
- 51:21bike would actually gets stolen, just frustration that someone
- 51:26would actually do that. And then this individual who I
- 51:31interacted with, who originally just took it for a joyride.
- 51:36He I feel like he kind of shape shifted or changed identities
- 51:41during but at one point, we are we were locked in a little room
- 51:45and we were discussing why he did this, but it then turned
- 51:48into something. That was not about my bike or
- 51:52taking it for a joy ride. It was trying to, it's very
- 51:56vague, but it was almost like there were, he was telling me
- 52:00ways that I was about to say out of Integrity, according to his
- 52:07perspective and I felt like I was very receptive to that
- 52:14originally going. Okay, I tell me more.
- 52:15I want to know how I can do better, but then he got into
- 52:21something or I just shut it down as I got, right?
- 52:24I'm I'm done with this conversation and that's when I
- 52:28went back outside to find that, my bike had actually been stolen
- 52:30again. Yeah.
- 52:34So I don't know. That's no.
- 52:36So in listening to you again, another thing that is That the
- 52:42dream itself to say. Okay, we're going to interpret
- 52:45this dream. There's not one interpretation
- 52:48of Any Dream. Dreams are symbolic and just
- 52:51like a symbol say, a symbol of the archetype of the circle.
- 52:56We can look at that in so many different ways.
- 52:58We can say the circle of wholeness, we can say, you know,
- 53:01the egg, we can stay. It's the circle is represents
- 53:06the South. There's so many different
- 53:09interpretations. So in this I mean, I'm going to
- 53:13nail down and say, okay, Todd, this dream last night.
- 53:16Here is what it means but we can begin to circle around it and
- 53:22when I feel like when I'm listening to a dream, I'm also
- 53:26listening with my body and what I'm aware of this.
- 53:30When you talked about this character who enters in, I mean
- 53:34getting the kids what you said, I don't like to be frantic, I
- 53:38don't like being late. That kind of it was like made a
- 53:43lot of sense that the dream is affirming and very affirming
- 53:48that that isn't a way that you want to live.
- 53:52If anything, it just feels like yes, an affirmation but then
- 53:57this guy shows up And soon as you start talking about that, I
- 54:03feel in me, like a kind of enlivening Interest, like I call
- 54:08it a click or a kind of a hum start, so it's somatic.
- 54:14It's like, okay, when something is happening here with this
- 54:19character. And to me, he feels and, you
- 54:22know, the archetype of the Shadows.
- 54:25Yes. So the shadow archetype is that
- 54:29part of us that we either because our family rejected it
- 54:34or the culture rejects it we kind of push it away.
- 54:40Like for me it was my as a as a woman.
- 54:44What was in my shadow was my aggression my ambition took me a
- 54:47long time. I would dream about these you
- 54:50know, very ambitious people and I'd be like why am I dreaming?
- 54:55Being about that or I would feel Envy of people who were finding
- 54:59a lot of success. Until I finally said, oh, you
- 55:02know, this is a shadow part of me and become integrating it.
- 55:06I know I'm jumping around a little bit here but this guy
- 55:11who's sort of taking your bike for a joyride or then possibly
- 55:16tricking you so it can be stolen while you're talking to him.
- 55:22Feels like a shadow part feels like a A part that might need,
- 55:28you know it could be a part that is actually dangerous and needs
- 55:35to be gotten rid of but my senses there might be something
- 55:38more in there, like some some awareness of how this dialogue
- 55:45with the shadow part. There's a little inner work
- 55:51around that. So, he seems a little bit like a
- 55:58trickster to me. Yeah.
- 56:04I feel that a bit and yeah and a trickster who's unconscious is
- 56:11dangerous, you know, he got you into a situation where your bike
- 56:16got stolen because you were distracted.
- 56:21Or brought into a conversation kind of LED down some kind of a
- 56:25path that first. It seemed good but then it kind
- 56:29of turned into nothing. But what I would wonder is, if
- 56:35you kind of go in a little bit and just think, is there a part
- 56:39of you? so that's like a part of you,
- 56:44that is Could be a trickster part that actually needs to be
- 56:52not ignored or pushed away because it's a dream is saying
- 56:58that by ignoring or pushing it away, something very important
- 57:02to you, your bike your mode of transportation.
- 57:06Something that gives you, you know, a way to move in the world
- 57:11could somehow be jeopardized the only thing that comes up for me
- 57:17when you say that is, I'm not very proud of a lot of things
- 57:21that I did in my youth and stealing was part of that.
- 57:25And so, I wonder if there's any sort of like karmic record there
- 57:30that's coming up. I just, I lacked what I would
- 57:34call Integrity, I didn't have any sense of I didn't carry any
- 57:41sort of sense of consequence. If I took something that I know
- 57:44didn't belong to me, it was just for my gain, and that was that I
- 57:49didn't really. I think too much else about it.
- 57:54Does that mean anything first? Yeah and first of all, I want to
- 57:57really acknowledge that you shared something.
- 58:02You know, that's that's raw and that's very honest.
- 58:07And I and I want to say I'm taking that in and really
- 58:10holding it with respect and compassion, you know.
- 58:15We don't know each other that well, this is like our first,
- 58:18this is the session s things. Yes, I can date and so
- 58:22pericardium. Cardi and you know, like like I
- 58:24really want to take that in Todd.
- 58:26Yeah, and this house and it's just going to say it's not
- 58:29something that's hard for me to share because it's it is part of
- 58:33who I am today and I learned greatly from it and I know I
- 58:40would not be the person I am today having conversations like
- 58:43this and helping other people lead more virtuous lives if I
- 58:48hadn't gone through that myself. Exactly and Bravo.
- 58:52And thank you. You like that's like, you know,
- 58:54owning your Shadow as a Healer, you know.
- 58:58And so, I love what you just said, but the other thing that's
- 59:02going on for me, of course, it's inside of me.
- 59:04I'm getting like, like my little tingle Tingle excitement, the
- 59:09real image of these dreams that was like totally grabbed me, was
- 59:14the Snoopy Dog address book that you had were young?
- 59:18And I was like, so taking that as like there's an architect.
- 59:23There. And then, when I heard you say,
- 59:25you were a theme, I was like, ah, it's noop dog, like you,
- 59:29there was a job there. And so for me, that's where the
- 59:33Poetry starts. Well, an address book is poetic,
- 59:37you know, and it's cluing us that there's something from the
- 59:41past, as you said, that still needs to be polished or reckoned
- 59:48with and I think transformed and it's the address book which I
- 59:53don't know if it was Snoopy or not, but it was very, it was a
- 59:56kids book and at first came into play in, this is really strange
- 1:00:01at a game of some sort, like a basketball or a football game.
- 1:00:06And the ref took this point, it was a football and was convinced
- 1:00:11that there was trickery afoot and felt like there was
- 1:00:16something in the ball that was altering the performance of it.
- 1:00:22So we cut it open with a razor blade reaches is feel.
- 1:00:25This is the dream. This is the dream that is yeah,
- 1:00:29he cuts it open and inside, is this little address book, this
- 1:00:36proof that there's been treachery and he pulls it out
- 1:00:40and he's looking through it and I'm for some reason, right
- 1:00:42beside. I'm like, huh?
- 1:00:43My name on the cover of that little tiny Snoopy address book.
- 1:00:47I have like I've no idea and eventually that became that cut
- 1:00:53open football became like a piece of fabric and it was like
- 1:00:58a giant duvet and I was inside it and I was examining the
- 1:01:02stitches to find out. How did someone put that address
- 1:01:04book inside of this? There must be evidence within
- 1:01:07the stitching. Right.
- 1:01:11All of these dreams now, is there unfolding and I mean, I
- 1:01:16guess for some people who are listening to this and I suppose
- 1:01:19I say this to the pedal Laurie, I don't know if anyone is still
- 1:01:22listening and it's point, it might just be for you.
- 1:01:42Little small book that was hidden inside and the referee
- 1:01:47saying the game, there's something about the game, and
- 1:01:51there's something about this concern of it being rigged, or
- 1:01:56there's trickery involved. And then you tell me, you know,
- 1:02:00that as a younger person that that archetype of the thief, the
- 1:02:04trickster was, you know, active in you in.
- 1:02:09Not so involved, not such an evolved way, but where I would
- 1:02:15go with this. Now, Well, something just came
- 1:02:19up for me before you go into that.
- 1:02:21This just dawned on me. One of the moments of Deceit
- 1:02:27that I'm least. Well, now I'm not proud of any
- 1:02:30of them, but one that's still kind of bothers me is when I was
- 1:02:33in university. I was often involved in.
- 1:02:37Scalping tickets and where I grew up that wasn't illegal so
- 1:02:41that was just a thing buying tickets, cheap reselling, them
- 1:02:43high. But there was one particular
- 1:02:45football game at University that I went.
- 1:02:47To that. I sold some tickets to some
- 1:02:49people, that I knew, they probably couldn't use because
- 1:02:53they were student tickets. And these weren't potentially
- 1:02:58probably weren't students that I sold them to and that's still
- 1:03:01one that ways it still weighs on me.
- 1:03:04I'm just I feel like, yeah, that was a really I knew I was doing
- 1:03:10something rotten when I did it and I still did it and for me
- 1:03:15the greed of getting $500 on the other side, which at that time
- 1:03:20was like a fortune to me. We're however much it was.
- 1:03:23But yeah, it was it was worth it.
- 1:03:25Yeah. But now obviously looking back
- 1:03:28at like, now that that wasn't worth it. so, I'm wondering if
- 1:03:32that football at that, all of that is actually symbolic of
- 1:03:39that particular Moment In Time. I mean I do feel in listening
- 1:03:46and also the fact that the address book reminds you of this
- 1:03:51book that you had when you were young, it doesn't remind me of a
- 1:03:55particular book. No.
- 1:03:56Okay. Just would be like a book that a
- 1:03:58kid would have yes. But that's still good and even
- 1:04:02like you said, you don't know. So this is all how I work.
- 1:04:05So even though you don't know for a fact that it was Snoopy,
- 1:04:08the fact that you mentioned Snoopy in the dream world.
- 1:04:12All this is What we call the like material.
- 1:04:15It's all dream data. It's how like the brain actually
- 1:04:20works on this level of making all these intertwining
- 1:04:23connections that aren't linear. But if you stay with them, like
- 1:04:28a wholeness forms out of what seems like chaos.
- 1:04:32Okay. So you're working with
- 1:04:34associations now that are beginning to form a picture of
- 1:04:38an archetype, which is one of the primary archetypes, which is
- 1:04:43the thief, the trickster, and that archetype of courses, it's
- 1:04:50easy to see. It's negative side.
- 1:04:53And you, as we said, you know, as a teenager, we're living a
- 1:04:58sort of inefficient or uninvolved expression of that
- 1:05:03archetype, the trickster Thief, but it also has a positive side,
- 1:05:12a very positive side. You know, the, the original
- 1:05:18plant, the earlier more umbrella archetype of this.
- 1:05:24Trickster Thief is Mercury, the messenger, and the god Mercury,
- 1:05:30the god of communication. And, and Mercury was also the
- 1:05:35god of the marketplace of the, you know, the of transactions.
- 1:05:41And I'm looking at you with your podcasts and your tremendous
- 1:05:46capacity to deliver information, your dedication to information,
- 1:05:52and communication. Occation and connection.
- 1:05:54And I'm seeing the archetype of mercury, very enliven, right
- 1:05:59before me. So I feel like the dream, if I
- 1:06:04were to say what's this dream asking for of Todd.
- 1:06:10I would say that there's definitely an evolution of the
- 1:06:16archetype that's underway. There's also I feel in listening
- 1:06:23to you an invitation to action steps because that's what I
- 1:06:30always say. The ultimate work of the Dream
- 1:06:33Work is to get some information, some Revelation which I think is
- 1:06:38beginning to come through. And then asking the question,
- 1:06:43what is the dream need from you or want from you as far as an
- 1:06:48actual action step in the outer world?
- 1:06:55And that can take the form of ritual.
- 1:07:01And so, I feel like there's something around this, still
- 1:07:04this feeling that you haven't quite redeemed.
- 1:07:07The scalping tickets. It's not quite complete as a
- 1:07:13redemption or transformation. So that's one piece, but the
- 1:07:20other piece that I'm really interested in, it's hot as how
- 1:07:25does this trickster Thief Mercury, move it into an even
- 1:07:31higher octave in your life right now because it's active.
- 1:07:36I mean, you're already living in a really wonderful, you know,
- 1:07:41inspiring and livened way. But to me, the dream is saying
- 1:07:46Your maybe more. But is that the more requires
- 1:07:50that you be very careful about the danger of it becoming
- 1:07:56frantic or, you know, taking on too much of There's something
- 1:08:03also of a warning in that dream. So we need.
- 1:08:06What? How does that resonate?
- 1:08:10one thing that came up when you said the church trickster thief
- 1:08:12of mercury is I now live on a farm called Ravenhill and the
- 1:08:18Ravens are always flying by. And, and cawing, of course, they
- 1:08:25are the ultimate trickster trickster thieves, so that just
- 1:08:29popped up for me. Amazing, literally watching them
- 1:08:32fly outside of my studio. But back to the, the bigger
- 1:08:38question and before we go to the bigger question, I'm going to
- 1:08:42just interrupt to say that's a synchronicity.
- 1:08:46So in this realm of Dream Work of archetype of the deep psyche,
- 1:08:51when things start to, what are like, meaningful coincidences,
- 1:08:57that's what a synchronicity is or pieces.
- 1:08:59Start coming together. Like when I heard the word snoop
- 1:09:03see Ray. Raven trickster.
- 1:09:06You know that the Deep psyche. The unconscious is becoming
- 1:09:10activated so I feel like yes that's an affirmation that we're
- 1:09:15on track of something. Yeah so these Ravens yes and
- 1:09:21Mercury with the wing. God of course hmm.
- 1:09:26Sorry back what freshman what was the question again?
- 1:09:31No what is what could be the I'm actually left with two
- 1:09:37questions. What could be a ritual of
- 1:09:40redemption? For that scalped ticket for
- 1:09:44those tickets. Well, as I said I feel like the
- 1:09:47work that I do now is extremely related to that.
- 1:09:56Earlier archetype that, I lived out as the thief and the
- 1:09:59trickster. Because now, as a as a father as
- 1:10:06someone who guides and mentors men, I have that as my
- 1:10:12superpower, hope that sound of Integrity, that I totally lack
- 1:10:16before. So I can, I can better help
- 1:10:19people to step into their, find their sin step into their is
- 1:10:23because I had to go through it myself and And now, I'm the type
- 1:10:27of person where, if I find money on the ground, I'm going to look
- 1:10:32around and try to find Who belongs to.
- 1:10:34We were actually downhill mountain biking, the other week,
- 1:10:39and someone had dropped a full water bottle somewhere on the
- 1:10:43mountain and I picked it up and on the way down every person we
- 1:10:48pass. Like did you lose a water
- 1:10:49bottle? Did you lose a water bottle and
- 1:10:51the whole time? I know my son really wanted a
- 1:10:53water bottle for his bike but that Wasn't the way I wanted him
- 1:10:57to, to acquire it. By taking it potentially from
- 1:11:01someone who would left it on the Mountainside and it wasn't until
- 1:11:05we got to the bottom and I exhausted asking everyone that I
- 1:11:09considered giving it to him. But then I said no, let's take
- 1:11:12it to the lost and found and we'll leave it there and it was
- 1:11:15like a three dollar water bottle so I don't think anyone really
- 1:11:18was going to come looking for it but that's just what I wanted to
- 1:11:22do with it and what I felt was the right thing to do with it
- 1:11:25whereas As backup, 30 years. Anything I find is mine even if
- 1:11:31I'm not actually finding it, even if I can just get away with
- 1:11:33taking it. No.
- 1:11:36But that's a beautiful, beautiful example of a ritual of
- 1:11:41redemption that you're teaching your son just by doing that and
- 1:11:46he experiencing that choice with you, you know, and that he will
- 1:11:51get the water bottle in some other way, feels powerful and
- 1:11:58interesting that it had to do with.
- 1:12:02Well, would it should we just pick it up and take it kind of
- 1:12:06tricks? Our Thief have the bikes or in
- 1:12:10there. There's some, you know,
- 1:12:12constellation of pieces of the dream happening.
- 1:12:17So I feel like that's clearly underway in your psyche.
- 1:12:25I still wonder just given that you see you still have a sense
- 1:12:31of this memory of incompletion around the scalp tickets as part
- 1:12:38of moving to the higher Octave of the Mercury trickster
- 1:12:44archetype and even the bike. The fact that that's dream is
- 1:12:48about your capacity to move to travel to to move swiftly.
- 1:12:54Just what Mercury Likes to do, I would still say in my book, like
- 1:13:00there could be some and ritual can be extremely small.
- 1:13:04Like that's the action step that the dream asks for.
- 1:13:08So it could be something as simple as I mean.
- 1:13:11Again, I'm not going to make the ritual for you.
- 1:13:14I'm just giving an example of getting a ticket and giving it
- 1:13:19as a gift of Charity, a lot, you know, maybe finding some
- 1:13:25Organization, you know where you give that as a gift to some, for
- 1:13:31some kid, to go to something that they couldn't otherwise go
- 1:13:35to and it just or, you know, again, that's just an example of
- 1:13:39a ritual that is a response to a dream.
- 1:13:44And I'll often invite people and I'm not saying that's the ritual
- 1:13:48you should do, but just to keep in mind if that opportunity
- 1:13:52arises because Something's Cooking there, but the other
- 1:13:57piece of the dream is that I do feel Todd.
- 1:14:02Like there's some invitation that this dream is bringing to
- 1:14:09you of using your skill, using your Mercurial even
- 1:14:17gamesmanship. To take ownership of that being
- 1:14:24very aware of the potential, you know, distractions or the ways
- 1:14:32that things could speed up. So very in a very grounded,
- 1:14:37methodical way just reflecting on.
- 1:14:43How could you use that capacity to actually augment the work
- 1:14:49you're already doing? that would be my question and
- 1:14:55I'm not saying we're going to figure it out right here and now
- 1:14:58on the spa, But the integration of even this thief archetype I'm
- 1:15:07going to share something that I heard recently that I feel is
- 1:15:11relevant and it comes from a guy Baio Akumal off and if you know
- 1:15:17his work but he's a he's a really sort of incredible voice
- 1:15:22on the planet right now who I'm following a lot and he is of
- 1:15:27African descent, but he studied at Pacific College.
- 1:15:30College. He's a PHD psychologist but very
- 1:15:33rooted in African traditions and studying a lot about history of
- 1:15:40slavery and how slaves survived through and looking at, like how
- 1:15:46can we apply that now, To what's happening on the planet now and
- 1:15:52he said this thing. He said, you know, it's not at
- 1:15:56the current time on the planet it's not necessarily any more
- 1:15:59about speaking truth to power. You know there you there was a
- 1:16:03whole thing about we have to speak up and have to speak the
- 1:16:06truth and we have to say what we believe in fight for what we
- 1:16:09believe these had some of the slaves when they would run away,
- 1:16:14there's like called Meritage, they would get off the
- 1:16:17plantations or they'd run into the RS through the swamps that
- 1:16:21they would do it. They weren't going to tell
- 1:16:24everyone their plans, they kept things sort of to themselves,
- 1:16:28and they might even not tell the truth because telling the truth
- 1:16:32could jeopardize their lives. So in service of this new
- 1:16:38Liberation, or some of the work that some of us are doing now to
- 1:16:43transform Consciousness, there may be a need for the kind.
- 1:16:49Kind of subterfuge or holding back on everything that you
- 1:16:55think or know that actually furthers the healing and the
- 1:17:00transformation that's underway. And that it's a very it's
- 1:17:05contract counterintuitive for me, it makes me think a little
- 1:17:10differently but I came to me when I was listening to you,
- 1:17:15that there may be some skill sets now with the new New level
- 1:17:19of integrity and morality that you have that you can use not in
- 1:17:25this lower octave, but in a higher octave.
- 1:17:29So if I'm hearing this, right? It's basically taking what is an
- 1:17:34archetype of trickster Thief that typically would be seen as
- 1:17:37a negative and Throughout ization of that.
- 1:17:43Finding the positive? Yes.
- 1:17:49That would be an integration of the Shadows.
- 1:17:52Hmm. That shows up in that dream the
- 1:17:56quote unquote bad guy and so this is kind of mirroring what
- 1:18:03you said about the archetypes, are they're not good or bad.
- 1:18:10They just are and it's how we use them, just as a raven, the
- 1:18:15ultimate trickster thief and myth is, it's not bad because
- 1:18:19it's a trickster Thief. Nope, it's that's Chrome that
- 1:18:25that's Raven medicine but then how you know, every medicine can
- 1:18:29either heal or poison. Yes, So it's how you use the
- 1:18:36medicine that you were given. Which, I mean again I'm only
- 1:18:40getting to know you, but I feel that archetype of mercury, the
- 1:18:45communicator, you know, the mediator, you know, the one who
- 1:18:49can transmit information but also sleight of hand.
- 1:18:54But also, you know, the merchant, the one in the who's
- 1:18:57moving things from one place to another.
- 1:19:01You it's information, it's learning.
- 1:19:05It's a beautiful part of you but it had gotten distorted as a
- 1:19:08young /, you hadn't evolved it yet, right?
- 1:19:11And yet, as you say, you wouldn't be who you are.
- 1:19:13Now, you've already worked with it.
- 1:19:16Could any of that be related to, to some of the work that I do
- 1:19:20with men and that when we're on our Retreats I'm just part of
- 1:19:25that with them. And really, my biggest role is
- 1:19:30just making sure that we kind of stay on Ask, so to speak, but I
- 1:19:38like to create containers where the men can come up with their
- 1:19:41own realization, so almost tricking them into realizing
- 1:19:48where I'm trying to get them, but I'm not actually pointing it
- 1:19:51out to them. And so a lot of that comes from
- 1:19:55just having opportunities for all the men who are there
- 1:19:57together to connect and interact and to call each other out on
- 1:20:02our ship. When we are out of integrity,
- 1:20:05But I find that it often happens in our way where the person is
- 1:20:09like, oh okay, I see what's going on here and they actually
- 1:20:13connect a to zed without someone taking them through all the
- 1:20:17steps. Exactly.
- 1:20:19And also see that's your master gamesmanship because, you know,
- 1:20:25that there's a higher. There's a, there's a containing
- 1:20:29intelligence of a group that's bigger.
- 1:20:33It's greater than Your individual telling him the truth
- 1:20:38or one-man figuring it out. Once you're working with group
- 1:20:43and energies in this Mercurial way, you're actually allowing,
- 1:20:50you know, through that capacity and you to see that there's
- 1:20:54something that can develop, it isn't a way.
- 1:20:57It's a trickster ish thing but in a very positive way and very
- 1:21:02evolved, you know there's always A trickster in a fairy tale or a
- 1:21:06myth. It's a very important lynchpin
- 1:21:10of the story. And in that is knowing, you
- 1:21:14know, that, our rational mind isn't the end-all be-all of his
- 1:21:18situation. And there are a lot of other
- 1:21:22intelligences and energies that come from different levels.
- 1:21:30Not think, when I woke up this morning with his dream of
- 1:21:34rattling, in my head, love my work.
- 1:21:38I love, you know, it is a little bit like, you know, opening the
- 1:21:43dream and believe me, you know, when you told me your dream or
- 1:21:46a, my patient, send me a dream. My first initial response is.
- 1:21:50Oh my gosh. What am I gonna do with this?
- 1:21:54It does. It's like someone just like X
- 1:21:56through a whole bunch of paint on the floor.
- 1:21:59And Jackie, make a picture out of his hair.
- 1:22:01But I've learned just like you, I do the same thing.
- 1:22:05I like lean back because you know, I trust I really really
- 1:22:10trust the wisdom of the psyche. Yeah.
- 1:22:15So this in a we have an only talked about this but let's say
- 1:22:19we've been talking about this for 40 minutes or so at least
- 1:22:23yeah that's a lot of time for someone to spend end.
- 1:22:28Each day, journaling their dreams or telling someone their
- 1:22:32dreams and analyzing it and trying to get a message out of
- 1:22:35it. So how does that, what are the
- 1:22:39practical aspects of this? How does someone actually take
- 1:22:43this in a way that can be integrated into their life
- 1:22:47without it? Requiring a big chunk of time
- 1:22:52that could be spent, maybe doing something else.
- 1:22:54Beneficial Right. I mean, believe me, I don't
- 1:22:59spend an hour every day on my dreams.
- 1:23:01There are many many mornings where I'll just jot it down,
- 1:23:06literally, like, even this morning, I just jotted down two
- 1:23:11sentences because I had a dream, I was making sandwiches and the
- 1:23:16city, we need some of it was just like, okay, that's
- 1:23:19obviously, you know, my whole sort of digestive tract, you
- 1:23:23know, whatever. I'm not going to spend a lot of
- 1:23:25time. There was this one image that
- 1:23:28was I was walking down a sort of Twilight City street and there's
- 1:23:32a kind of scaffolding and then I looked and I saw on the other
- 1:23:37side of the scaffolding, where these carved figner figurines,
- 1:23:40that were hidden. That's it.
- 1:23:43I'm just wrote that down in my journal.
- 1:23:45I didn't do any work with it. I barely, I mean, I sat baby for
- 1:23:51two minutes and I thought well, if those figurines are part of
- 1:23:55me They're like some Shadows that you're not paying attention
- 1:24:01to that are lurking back there or something hidden.
- 1:24:05Yeah, what's hidden? What's kind of being but also
- 1:24:10maybe needs to be protected still so that's enough.
- 1:24:13I don't need to do more with that dream today, but it's the
- 1:24:17first benefit of Dream Work is remembering the dream.
- 1:24:21The second benefit is either jotting it down or Telling
- 1:24:26somebody. So that's why Benjamin and I
- 1:24:28wake up and we'll just say what did you dream?
- 1:24:30Would you dream takes 3 minutes. Yeah.
- 1:24:34And what if the dream sorry to interrupt but what if the dream
- 1:24:38is something where you and your intimate partner?
- 1:24:40And there's something that happened in your dream, that you
- 1:24:42don't really feel comfortable sharing with your intimate
- 1:24:45Partners such as a sexual dream with another individual.
- 1:24:50Well, that's why Benjamin and I have work to be able to we
- 1:24:56actually do tell each other those dreams and there's some
- 1:25:00work there in holding your neutrality.
- 1:25:02I mean we've been doing it for so many years that we're just
- 1:25:05used to it now, you know? But what it's actually opens up
- 1:25:09for us is like I'll say, oh, so that particularly say aggressive
- 1:25:18person Your dream. That was kind of turn two, turn
- 1:25:22on. Maybe you're asking me to bring
- 1:25:25more aggression to our relationship, to be more
- 1:25:29forthcoming and what I want. And I'll actually take an accent
- 1:25:34action step in and make a change around it, or more likely with
- 1:25:40him. You know, I have this dream of
- 1:25:42someone being super, like, cuddly and affectionate and
- 1:25:46physical and he's like, oh, right, I haven't been paying
- 1:25:48attention. Into your body enough lately.
- 1:25:53But that takes a lot of work. I mean that you know, again to
- 1:25:57start with, you don't have to. You can be a tricks, you don't
- 1:25:59have to tell all your dreams. You could be, you can move into
- 1:26:05this process. Well, I'm sure in that juicy
- 1:26:08stuff is where most of the magic happens.
- 1:26:11Yeah. Can you do this on your own?
- 1:26:15Are you a good person to interpret your dreams or does it
- 1:26:18help to have? Someone to share them with who
- 1:26:22maybe is not trained and interpreting dreams.
- 1:26:26It's a both/and Todd. I think you know from you can
- 1:26:29already see for me all dream work is good.
- 1:26:32Dreams work. Yeah.
- 1:26:33So just writing them down and then there's some really simple
- 1:26:38ways that you work on your dreams without having meeting
- 1:26:43anyone else there. One of them is like, what we
- 1:26:47just did, just asking that question.
- 1:26:50How could this be related to my life today?
- 1:26:55Even like the feeling sometimes, the symbols seem like they don't
- 1:27:01mean anything. But, like, say the feeling in my
- 1:27:04dream of something behind a scaffolding, or the feeling in
- 1:27:08your dream of like things. Rushing, being late to get the
- 1:27:12kids to school, how's that feeling?
- 1:27:15Where's that feeling showing up in my life?
- 1:27:18And what maybe do I need to do to shift that a little bit?
- 1:27:24Okay. In our book, I mean, in the
- 1:27:26Alchemy of inner work, there's a chapter where I really break it
- 1:27:30down. Really simply steps to working
- 1:27:33with a dream that are totally self guided.
- 1:27:36Yes, so that's a way to start but it's also really fun like
- 1:27:43what we just did you know, just chatting with another person and
- 1:27:47going through the steps is and I feel like I know you so much
- 1:27:51better now. Like I really He'll wow like
- 1:27:55that. I know a part of Todd that I
- 1:27:58wouldn't have gotten to know if we hadn't worked with the dream
- 1:28:03that way, right? And that kind of deep intimate
- 1:28:08knowing for me that I love that, you know, I'm an introverted.
- 1:28:12I'm like I love knowing feeling level, you know, but I think
- 1:28:17it's valuable in our world. I think that kind of listening
- 1:28:21that kind of knowing each Each other is like the antidote as
- 1:28:26you're saying to. The blame to the victimization,
- 1:28:29to the anger, to the polarizing. You know, like listening to each
- 1:28:33other in a dream circle is a very connecting experience and
- 1:28:39we we do it on Zoom with our students.
- 1:28:42We have incredible dreams circles in the zoom room, people
- 1:28:47can go really deep like with you.
- 1:28:52What are you doing all this? Dream journals.
- 1:28:56Do you read that? Well, they're right here behind
- 1:29:01me in a box now, labeled, and I do read them, you know, it's
- 1:29:07pretty fascinating to go back to dream journals, I kept 20 years
- 1:29:12ago, and look at them. Now, But obviously I'm not
- 1:29:19saying everyone should do this. This is my work.
- 1:29:22You know I work with the psyche this is my passion.
- 1:29:25So but currently I'm actually going back and looking at the
- 1:29:31dream journals along with some biographical data than I'm
- 1:29:36working with and really helping me piece together a growth
- 1:29:42pattern in my own life that's underway.
- 1:29:46I mean. I will just say, a couple years
- 1:29:51ago, I had a dream about a huge tree that was leaning.
- 1:29:59And that's that's what that was a big dream.
- 1:30:01That was one of those young Big Dreams because I'm still working
- 1:30:03with that dream, two years later and how it was talking about a
- 1:30:10very radical reorganizing in my own inner being, that's
- 1:30:15underway. Yeah.
- 1:30:18So the dream journals. Yeah, I find them valuable for
- 1:30:21me as a way to go back and see you know my own growth my own
- 1:30:27shifts on a soul level, very interesting.
- 1:30:37Yeah, that was fun. That's like what I love doing
- 1:30:41that. I do it every day and I love it
- 1:30:44and you know, I think like coming back to the church.
- 1:30:48Trickster archetype for me. I think it's kind of the sleuth.
- 1:30:53So when I get that dream and I have that immediate feeling like
- 1:30:57okay, what have we got here? Then I kind of leaned back and I
- 1:31:03kind of say to the Dreamweaver right, help me out here.
- 1:31:06Let's relax into this and wait for the synchronicities to form,
- 1:31:11but it's a little Sherlock Holmes like because I'm
- 1:31:15listening for the places, like I said, where the body felt since
- 1:31:19gets activated and I'm looking for where the Poetry shapes up
- 1:31:25like the words that have double meanings places where, you know,
- 1:31:30the real life in the dream life start to synchronize.
- 1:31:35So you're actually it's a little bit of a mystery game.
- 1:31:39Yeah it is but it has big in big resonance for how people
- 1:31:46actually live their lives. Hmm.
- 1:31:50There you go. So, you mentioned and I just
- 1:31:53want to reiterate, there is a chapter and your newest book,
- 1:31:56The Alchemy of inner work and for anyone who's interested in
- 1:31:59that, we spend a whole lot of time in our previous episode,
- 1:32:03talking about it and there's a book review on my website for
- 1:32:07that. It's an incredible book so I
- 1:32:09definitely recommend it. You said you're working on a
- 1:32:13book related to dreams. Is that what I heard?
- 1:32:17Correct know this. Next book isn't so much related.
- 1:32:20It's just that I'm using the dreams as a thread in the book
- 1:32:24itself. But in that sense I would say,
- 1:32:27you know, another use of these dream journals is in our
- 1:32:31creative lives, know it. They're very activating to that.
- 1:32:37Yes. But in our community that
- 1:32:41Benjamin and I mod moderate and and cultivate and care for At
- 1:32:48the inner healing Circle it. And you possibility, we do have
- 1:32:53a week, a monthly Meetup, where people sometimes bring dreams,

- 1:33:59different acupuncture points, actually Spirit of the points
- 1:34:03that people anyone can use. Not just acupuncturists.
- 1:34:07And we have all kinds of interesting other classes.
- 1:34:11They're available to they're all about what we call Soul work
- 1:34:16working at this level that you and I have been talking about
- 1:34:19about Working with the non-physical.
- 1:34:24Aspects of our being that we believe are kind of critical
- 1:34:30aspects of our Humanity. Our souls can't be measured,
- 1:34:35can't be pinned down. And yet so much a part of our
- 1:34:39experience in a lifetime qualitative experience of being
- 1:34:44human. Great.
- 1:34:48I'll put that in the show notes for people to go and check that
- 1:34:51out. Thank you Todd.
- 1:34:54Thank you for coming back on. And spending this time with me,
- 1:34:58it's been very educational and enlightening.
