- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Ah, a little change of pace.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Good afternoon, brother.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Afternoon.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: So uh we got off to a rip-roaring start this morning because uh we're gonna be talking today on the podcast about painting in the cold slash as the season wanes and some things that we have learned to uh do and not do.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: And then uh uh like this morning I had to get the color selection from the client and get the paint made up, and then it was too cold to paint right away this morning.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: So we'll get into that in a little bit.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: But then when I rolled back into the job site, ready for we're painting shutters.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: There's I told Josh there's 10 shutters and then the garage door.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: So I was like, well, and you beat me there because you we were said, all right, what should I do?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: You told me to prep.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: And I was like, prep just like I looked at the quote on my phone on Jobber, and I had the address, and I was like, okay, and I looked, I was counting the shutters.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: All right, so I just start prepping the shutters.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: So I'm sanding them, I'm wiping them down, and I'm going along this house and I look around the corner, I'm like, man, this house has two driveways.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: That's so weird.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: What's going on here?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Then I'm like, mm, because you sent me pictures of the actual shutters, like you sent me the front, and you said there's stuff around the side, and then I did my rough math.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: I'm like, why are there 12 on the front?
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I've looked over, I'm like, oh, it's like a it was a twin home.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, oh, this is somebody else's house.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: So I was uh prepping someone else's shutters.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Josh, heck of a job prepping.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: And in your defense, in your defense, it the it's a little bit of a weird house setup, and the shutters uh were all the same color.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: They were all the same color.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And but luckily they were so faded that you couldn't really tell that I sanded them.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: I looked at them like, okay.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: But then to top it off, I go around the side and I'm working trying to uh put a ladder underneath a shutter, but they have one of those it's like uh like a basement window and has one of those plastic covers over top.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Yep so I go to move it, but the thing's been baking in the sun for 20 years.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just went crack.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And I just cracked it immediately.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: It cracked in like half a second.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And so I'm like, well, I'm gonna be replacing that.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And then I started, I didn't have a tape measure, so I was trying to measure it.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So I took a paint pole out and just like then I put tape, and then you saw me with this huge eight-foot paint pole because I was like marking it.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Like, what are you doing?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I'm trying to have you not see it so I could just go buy it tonight and replace it without you knowing.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Because I'm just gonna go to Home Depot and buy a new one.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: So but I'm like, I just I got caught hammer.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, dude.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Because you quoted the job.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I don't want to make more problems.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Oh no, it's fine.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: But like you saw me with this eight-foot paint pole, but we were not using one with tape wrapped around for no reason.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, anytime you see a painter with something that he shouldn't have, like, well, especially like there's first off, we're not rolling anything on this job.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: So I was like, what are you?
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: You're trying to be sneaky, but you came out, you came out of where your job like, damn it, why are you here?
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: What are you doing?
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Like just uh found this paint pole over here.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I was like, yo.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Been measuring something.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I was like, yeah, dude, I just cracked this thing.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Sorry.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Stop doing breaking things today.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: It's one of those days.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Uh and then we have like four shutters left that are in a very precarious position.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna see if we can get to them tomorrow with our our big ladders.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: 32s and 28.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is not our favorite.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Um brings us back around to uh painting uh in the cold slash like towards the end of the season.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: And I'd say like one of the things that we say every year that we I don't think we've successfully done once is we're like, we're like, I'm like Josh, you're like germ, we're not gonna we're gonna finish our exterior in like September.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: September, we're gonna be done, don't book any more exterior work, and and we're both in a hundred percent agreement, like yes, we will, because we don't particularly like painting in the cold, uh, because it sucks.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And uh like the days are shorter, it's just a pain in the butt.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: And then inevitably that never happens, and we have jobs that tail into October, and we are in the northeast outside of Philadelphia, so like depending on how the season goes, it can be like super cold.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: We've been very fortunate to have not a lot of rain the last couple weeks, and uh the temperatures have been semi-cooperative, but it's still like in the 30s in the morning, and then uh it'll like in the sun, it gets pretty warm and it's in like the 60s, which is nice.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: But then as soon as the sun goes down, temperatures plummet and it's back into the like the low 40s, high 30s at night, which is an issue for paint.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Uh so if you are like doing that, uh what we've been doing is uh showing up to the job a little bit later so that it's warmed up a bit and see if we can do any prep work that doesn't matter if it's especially on other people's shutters that we're not painting.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Josh did a heck of a job prepping those out.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: So um, but uh the other thing is so usually if you're looking at whatever paint you're putting on the surface, it's gonna have a temperature rating, and the temperature is rated for uh they'll have one for like the ambient temperature, so like the actual like temperature of the air, but also the one that's more important is the surface temperature of whatever thing that you're painting.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: So we were painting vinyl shutters in a garage door today, and you don't want that to be like 30 degrees.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: It's not the paint's gonna hit it, and then generally paint doesn't do well in the cold, particularly uh as far as curing goes or adhesion uh or durability or a lot of so like a lot of bad things can happen in the cold where like uh I remember one time we painted like a windowsill and we had to have it open and then like this freezing cold, you know, oh yeah, and then it crackles out, especially like on interior paint.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: So they do make some specialty project or pro uh products that are more uh have a wider uh kind of like they can tolerate higher temperatures and lower temperatures, even on like the surface, like that latitude paint from Sheron Williams.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Um, but the usually for exterior, we're using like soft gloss from uh Benjamin Moore, which is like their more glow product.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And uh I think the surface temperature has to be like between 45 and 50.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Ideally, ideally, to start going.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Uh so how we do it is we just wait, and you kind of want the morning dew to burn off as well, so it's not wet, so the surface isn't wet, but you can wipe that down.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: You just want the server the surface temperature to warm up.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then the big tip is like it's not just about when you apply it, but if you are painting late in the day and then the temperature's starting to drop, and then you you know you lay down a second coat or whatever, and then bounce, sun goes down, and if it drops to like 30 that night, the paint might not have time to cure.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: So a lot of times you want to kind of work in the midday, and then we rolled out at like three o'clock ish today off that.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: It wasn't because of uh the temperatures, because we didn't have the big enough ladders.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Well, we are we are also very But yeah, yeah.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Well what we can considered it, it was a the safer play.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And right now we're not in daylight savings or however that goes.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: I think that ticks over in November.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: That's very soon.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: It's like November's Sunday.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: I think it's this weekend that it ticks over.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: So it's gonna that sucks.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: It gets darker an hour earlier.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Well, the problem is it's like we we go through like our here's our exterior jobs, and then like at the end of the season, at the end of August, and begin at September, we get a couple good clients will call you, like, hey, could you get this done?
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, and then it just takes a little longer to get to, and then you're November.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: It happens.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Like I got one, it was like on a Friday that they called this past Friday.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Good client of ours, can you take care of this?
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: For yeah, yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Well, it's hard to say no.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think yours was a recent quote that you did.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: It was within the last couple weeks.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: And uh, all of them.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I don't think there's any of them that were past.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: We almost have to say no exterior if you're gonna do that, which we never do, and we're just not gonna do.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Uh, but then it's more of like you were trying to put some other jobs that were interior before.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: You were trying.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: I'm like, no, we need to do exterior, no, because you don't want to do them.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Like, well, it's a pain, but then you just keep pushing it back.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: You're like, no, I'm gonna schedule.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: It was like, you just did the quote.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Make them wait.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: This basic room's been waiting longer.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: No, it's like right now, but it's nice interior work.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: It was a real nice chair, but it's gonna be worse for us in like December.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: You're like, oh, I'm doing it now.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Like, we did the quote yesterday, we don't need to schedule it.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, we're almost done.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: We're almost done.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: We're we should by the end of the week, we should be all right.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think we should be wrapped up.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Well, in the one that we did last week, I had some exterior pieces, but there was a big chunk that was interior.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: So um more pushing those earlier, but we're we're doing okay, just a few late additions.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then I uh I looked at one, the one that called me Friday, and then I looked at it on Tuesday, and I was like, you know what?
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: And I finally was like, I just called our exterior guy who does all the tricky work for us.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: I just gave him a call.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: I'm like, yo man, can you just knock this out for us?
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: He's like, Yeah, I can do it, so he's just gonna do it.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so hopefully it does before it gets too cold.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Well, there uh I know a lot of guys like that latitude paint.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: I'm curious if uh any of our goo crew folks are like what you guys like using as like for any exterior, but also, you know, as the the season starts to get colder.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Uh because the latitude, I did the shed in that and I used awesome.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: I did the the trim was the gloss and then the fascia was like uh satin.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: So I think it only comes in flat satin and gloss.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: And uh I was pretty impressed with it.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Like it didn't flash out, it didn't like it adhered well, it was no no news to report, but it looked great because I did a combo of brushing and rolling and it and it had no like lap marks or didn't look weird at all.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: But I've noticed that the some of like Sharon Williams exterior paints, they look more like like plasticky or like rubbery or something.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know, but it looked fine.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: It looked uh like a nice, rather nice shed when I was done with it.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: So it looked like a professional did it.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: I'm like, eh, so we should charge money for it.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: That's always a good quick hey, you guys look like you can do this for a living.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: I like that joke.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Well, with exterior work too, it kind of like it's fine when it's uh if it's not too hot or cold or like you kind of need it like right in a good spot, so it can't rain, and then the summer we had a ton of storms, so then it's like and then it's gonna be 100 degrees out.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: If it's super hot, then that that's almost worse than in the cold.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: So, but it's just you I I think as the season, especially now once it's gonna tick over and we it gets darker an hour earlier, so now the paint has even less time to set up.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: You're kind of your working window gets whittled down to kind of like Especially on anything metal, late morning and so cold.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because even the garage door I was working on, thankfully I had the the sun was actually hitting it, which which warmed it up, but I'm not too worried about that.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: So it's just like it's annoying when you have to schedule around like the weather, which we always don't like, which I know some guys they do a ton of exterior, and that's all they're working around.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: So we used to do a lot more and now we're doing less cherry-pick the easy stuff, yes, interior, except what we the except these last few dude.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: The the that roof I was on today, you're like, yeah, it didn't look that steep, and I'm looking at it like it's pretty steep.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: And then thankfully, I the way I wedged the ladder, I got onto the service, and then you I'm sure if if folks have painted on a sketchy, like shingled roof, the grit starts to like you just start to slide.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: And so then thankfully the exterior of this house has like the I don't know what you call it.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Stone.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: It's stone, but it's not like it's just on like the edge.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: On the front.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: It's like fake, but it's real, whatever that is.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Half stone, half stone, yeah.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Uh it was secure enough, and some of them were jutting out a fair amount, so I like kind of rock climbed my way up, and then like I pinned my foot on the lentil and then uh or like the sill that was stone, and I was able to get the one shutter.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: So it's pretty pretty stoked with that.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Acrobatic.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: And I didn't impress, I didn't slide off.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, because then you like look down, you're like, oh, I don't want to go into that hollybush.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Why are there always holly bushes close to people's homes?
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: I guess it's like a security thing.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: And this hollybush was about 30 feet wide.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: So it could wherever you want to put the ladder, the hollybush was there.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: The prickliest bush of all.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Prickliest bush, and it's like dense.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And you can't get a ladder in there unless you break the bush.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you would have to jack that thing up.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: If I was Dix Hitter, I would just ban hollybushes.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Dude, I wouldn't, I it'd be like you can't have any plants close to the house.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Like I would need to be no plants, maybe some small flowers, no big bushes.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it should be no trees, it should be perfectly graded flat, yes, all the way around.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: That'd be law.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: Also, I don't understand on these homes, which this isn't like it's like a decent house.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: It's not like crazy.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but like they put shutters first off, there's way too many diff like different angles on the roof, and then it's impossible.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Like they put shutters on a third-story window, which I assume is in the attic somewhere, and it's look like those are gonna fade, someone's gonna have to paint them, and then it's like the biggest pain in the ass to get to it.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: It's like you just not think about the painters, they're not like designed about like the maintenance, even if the wolf the home.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, this lady's she's she's super nice, she's been a long time client, but she's very, very old, so it's like she's not, you know, it's not gonna like DIY that thing, but I always think about that when I'm looking at like all these pitches and roofs and you're like, dude, just make it normal, square, square so we can just get to it.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Easy flat surfaces to put a ladder on, yeah.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: And then launched from like a good angle.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: But I hate when everyone's got like prickly bushes, prickly bushes and steep angles, or just some like that one.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: The uh we had a couple the shutters we did at the beginning of the season on that one house that was like uh we like had to launch and it's always like a sloping yard that's going the wrong way, so you have to like stuff crap underneath the ladder.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: We had to launch it like through a tree to get up there.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: So anyway, I have some gripes about that.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: We've been doing a lot of shutters this year.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: We have.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: We get well, you always get scraped up if you don't have long sleeves on, like all the prickly stuff, and there's bugs crawling on you.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Like, man, this sucks.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: I was just glad that whatever bird built the nest.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: A bee comes, it starts hovering around and like whipping it with my brush.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: It's pain everywhere.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: I feel like every time we do it and like the shutters that are louvered, if they're actually legit louvered, that's when bees are like they just build a monster nest back there.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: I don't enjoy that either.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: So not a bird's nest.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: There was a bird's nest, and I thankfully there was no birds back there.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Didn't see any.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: So at least they were either they weren't home or they slept very soundly as I quietly painted this shutter on a very sketchy slant.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: So made it down, got it painted.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it looks good.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: But we did two two coats of uh Morglow soft gloss in uh uh something alloy.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: So it was a nice, nice powder blue color.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: It looks good, yeah.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Pretty snazzy.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty pretty happy with it.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: So but did you hear that?
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: That was a door, not a gunshot.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Okay, it sounded loud through my headphones.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Um but uh but yeah, so those are the things that we kind of run through with our exterior season that we always try and making promises you don't keep.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Not do an exterior painting in October and hopefully not November.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Well, we haven't technically broken any promises to any of the clients.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Like, we're not gonna take any more exterior work after this day.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Or if you land it, you should just be like, we'll get to it next season.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Which is what happens once it gets like Well, when we lie to them and say, Hey, we'll get to it this season, and then that's like March, like, oh I guess oh, I'm sorry.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Uh it's almost April.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I mean uh typically what we do now is like we have a few stragglers, which we probably have like maybe three more days of exterior work.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Do you think?
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: I hope so.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: You don't have anything else because we're not doing that one you looked at yesterday.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: No, sweet.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, so then technically we should have just two more days and we should be done.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: So that which will be it'll be done by this Thursday, perhaps.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: If we don't fall off a ladder.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: I had a builder call me about one piece of trim outside.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah?
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: So is it high?
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: No, super, it's like a super low door frame, but then you have to match something and paint outside work.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: The back of a basement.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: The one Brendan's on.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: It's just, hey, can you get it?
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, because they installed that door.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: That big door.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: So there's like little like eh.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: Little annoying thing.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: It's all right.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: So just be okay.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: You just whatever, just look at the product, make sure it can set up.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Uh and then there are other paints from I know so we usually use Benjamin Moore for exterior work, but they have like element guard or something, which is one that's supposed to do all like you can deter the server temperature can be way lower, and then I think the latitude paint from Sheridan Williams has like I think they call it like do detection or something.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: I'm like, dude, I the I that there's no way to prove whether or not this can do that.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: I don't know how a paint is gonna like uh put some labels on it.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Since it's like smart paint powered by AI.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: You're like, what are you talking about?
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: It's like does this have nanobots in it?
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: What's going on?
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: It's just paint.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: It's just paint.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: So anyway, check out how it should be uh like applied and then you know if the surface temperature needs to be.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: I know some guys can take a you can take one of those like thermometers that you shoot that can tell you the temperature.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Uh usually you just put your hand on it if it feels too cold.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Like don't you?
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: I'm just come on, man.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Maybe like a big commercial job.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm talking about though?
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Like the gun, it's just a it's a laser that you just shoot and then it tells you the temperature.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: Guys use it for like meat and stuff.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: But the painters, man.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: Just touch it.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: If the paint sticks, it sticks.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Warm it up.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: So heat guns.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Get the sun.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Or or finish it earlier.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: That's ideal.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Well, I know some guys, depending on where you live, you probably have you have a shorter or longer exterior season.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: But man, if it was if you were in like, I don't know, like Maine or like some very cold place, I'd imagine your exterior painting season is rather shorter.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Shorter.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: So, but uh we're we're we're it's not it hasn't been bad.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: I think the what's the worst the worst one I remember is that big exterior we did where we had the lift and it was very cold.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: We got it up to about Thanksgiving.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: I think we were there around Thanksgiving time.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: That sucked.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: That was terrible.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Because that was when we had like you had so many layers on, and then at least around where we are, like it's freezing cold in the morning.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: We would like fill up the lift with gas, and then we'd have it'd be like long like you know, your t-shirt, a long sleeve shirt, a hoodie, gloves, gloves, a beanie, and your hood up, and then we're painting, and then during the course of the day, you're just like taking layers off, and then the sun would start to go down, then you're like relaying back up, and then the thing that I would bitch about the most is my hands being cold.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: It's tough to warm them back up.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: I hate painting with cold.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: I hate painting with gloves, uh, because then you can't like we do a lot of like tricky brush work, so it's I want to feel it.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: You know, feel that sweet corona cortez in my hands.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: My hand was seizing up today a little bit.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: I was like, ah, sathritis.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: It got stuck.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: It's like move, move, hand.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: I was up on a ladder.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: What it gets stuck in like a claw grip.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: I couldn't move it, it just froze.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: I'm like, come on, I need you, hand.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Wake up, wake up.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Like, I need to drink some water or something.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: I don't know what's going on.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Electrolyte imbalance something.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Some stupid crap.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Getting old.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: That too.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Stupid crap.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: Life.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, yeah.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: It was the the painting on that like that angle with my foot wedged in that windowsill, and then yeah, dude.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: So I know exterior painters have like way better setups.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: They'll have like a pick set up.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: We still have all that.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: We got rid of all that stuff because we didn't want to do it.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: We don't if we don't have it, we won't do it.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: But then we're like, Yeah, we'll do the job.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Well, and then we we kind of show usually on the first day, which today was, was just like we show up with kind of like what we think would work, and then we're like, I I think I could see I can make this work.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: 24-foot ladders five.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Probably do that.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, need a 32.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: They we call in our buddy who like has a bigger crew and they do a ton of exterior work and they have all these like chicken ladders and like cool little tricks they do, and you're like, that would make it easier.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're a lot faster at it, too.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, also if you don't value someone else's life and you can just be like, go up there and do that.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: Yes, get up there, dude.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Have fun.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Get get get up there, fella.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Be like, yeah, I'll foot the ladder, and then you're just like some guy on his phone, like not paying attention.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: Like, all right.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: We don't it's just you know, it's just me and Josh today, so we want to avoid injuries as well.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: So getting that used to not be a concern.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: We did a lot of real sketchy stuff when you're in your 20s, you don't think about that stuff.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Well, we got the most hurt in our 20s.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: For painting?
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was usually from other stuff, but like we did the sketchiest stuff when we were in our 20s.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: But the I don't know if we've gotten hurt much painting.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Just like little things.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: Well, on that exterior job, you put one of those razor scrapers on the top of an extension ladder.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: I I moved it and then it fell on my head point down.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, and you're bleeding all over the place.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Thankfully, I had a blood going down the side every day.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: I had a hat on and a hoodie on, and it landed and it pierced through.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Like, ow man, and then I looked at you, and then blood just started coming down my forehead, like underneath my head.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: I knew I put the scraper on like oh it's like you dick.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, in my 20s.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: And then you uh the one exterior you fell, the ladder kicked out in my twenties.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: In your twenties, yeah.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to I don't think I've fallen since.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Uh oh no, I did fall on someone's stairs.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Steps, yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: Well, I stepped on a drop cloth.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: It was not the sticky one, it was hardwood steps, and I fell down the steps, and then the paint went everywhere.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I had too many painting-related heads into shelves.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Heads into things, hitting anything.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: And then the one time I refinished a staircase, I waxed the treads.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then I like, you shouldn't do that.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: Because uh, you know, it makes them like super slippery.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Super slippery.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: That's what I write.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: I'm writing the newsletter for handiworks on stairs and how uh everyone gets hurt on them.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just don't The Secret.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: I I gave it a cool title too.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: Your stairs.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Your stairs.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Don't die.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we uh we did some I mean we tied you to a radiator one time down in Philly.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Well, I was up on a 32-foot ladder and we went on the top I was on the top level and we ran it through their top like second story window.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: We tied rope through that radiator through my belt loops.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: Yes, that's what we did.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Because the like we had to be at such a steep angle that felt like I was just gonna fall backwards.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Because I was painting, I guess what do they call it, the cornice, yeah, on the very top of this house in Philly, like a row home.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: And uh, I was so we were so it was almost the ladder's like straight up.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, because the sidewalk didn't go out that far.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and there's cars parked, so you couldn't get your car, your back ladder back into the street.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, dude, just I'm like, I was I could feel it going backwards.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: I'm like, dude, just get a rope and tie me that radiator.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Uh and you did.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: I put it around, I took my belt off, put uh rope through.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: I can't remember if I footed the ladder or I just held it up.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: You were trying to hold, I think we tied a rope to the ladder and held it down.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, or that we used that to hold it back so I wouldn't like tilt the other way.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we weren't worried about it kicking out.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: No, it was it actually.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Instead, I was just gonna pole vault the wrong way.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: Dude, you would have gone down to the other side of the street.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: That would have been so bad.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that would have been that would have sucked.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: I could have pole bolted all the way down though.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not too bad for two guys just figuring it out.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we got it done.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we did.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: Way undercharged, but uh, that's how it goes.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you can like factor in like danger charges as well.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Be like, hey, yeah, we do find that when you do sketchy stuff up high, you can charge more.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: And people are like, that's fine.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: They're like, yeah, it's like, you know, you can be like, I gotta get scaffold there, or yeah, or whatever.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: It what's weird is like inside, I have no like I don't care.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: It doesn't bother me like launching a huge ladder up in a foyer or being up on baker scaffold or anything.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: Because your biggest ladder is a 24.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: We've never gone above a 24-foot ladder inside that I'm aware of.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: Maybe 28 once.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Super triple story foyer.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: It's usually a 24 you can get all, which is not that high.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: I've done high for interior.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: We've done some stuff where we had like a six-foot ladder on top of baker scaffolding.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: A double story baker scaffolding.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: That's a little sketch.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: But it's not that bad.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, because you got the rails and whatever.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: But yeah.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: Anyway, on the when I've posted about the baker scaffold, people get real skeeved out.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Not in the goo crew, but in the uh L D I Y phones a picture to my family if I'm ever up on top, just down what it looks like because it looks so high.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: And uh, oh my god, dad's working hard for you guys.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: It's dangerous over here.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: Dangerous in the streets.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Rough rough in them streets.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: Speaking of streets, this has nothing to do with streets.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Uh the goo crew uh link below uh where I'm doing some cool stuff in there.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: So if you're a painter, paint contractor, first 150 are free.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: We're up to about 130.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Uh, so we only have 21 more spots.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: And I'm actually been working a lot on the stuff that is not released, but will release when it's ready.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna make it simple to follow, and actually I'm trying to make it very, very good for anyone who's just starting out, or if you're under$30,000 a month in sales.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, cool.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: So yeah, helpful things helping out all the folks on the brand.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, this will come out soon, so that'll still be going.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: And um I think that's it.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: We're gonna wrap things up and hopefully not kill ourselves on these shutters tomorrow.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: If we're if we make it to the podcast next week, we're still still alive and well.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Or if this podcast goes out like on time, then it means we didn't die.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's true.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna post it Thursday morning.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: Right, yeah.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: So we'll see.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: You know.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: I'll post this our last podcast ever.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: We're talking, remember when they were alive and we love you all.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: We love you.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: They had so much potential.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Um to die like idiots.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Stupid shutter job.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: I won't be the way.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: I'll be so mad if I get if I die painting shutters.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's worse ways to go out.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, when they die at the funeral, they'd be like, oh man, these guys were painting shutters like two idiots.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: Like you slip off the roof, kick me, and we both land in that hollybush that takes us out.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: We die in a hollybush.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Trying to crawl away.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: We get holly, if we got hollybushes banned from front yards, that's a life uh worth living.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: The future painters will appreciate it.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: Founding goo crew members rise up and form a political.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: Well, the new symbol is like a hollybush with a big red X going through break the chains of hollybushes for painters across the world.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: This is no one's taking it.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Riding in the streets, just burning hollybushes, burning hollyhes, yeah.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Just people coming with like those uh just like chainsaws, just sawing them all down, just roasting in front of people's homes.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Dude, do they burn the house?
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: No, just the hollybushes, dowsing them in kerosene, stupid berries.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: No one likes these.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Do something.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Rose my legs when I rub up against it.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: It's just not properly trimmed.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: Scrape my forehead.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: Can't put a ladder in it.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: It was owie.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: I didn't like it at all.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: See, the thing is, whenever I'm like up on a high ladder, I always look at like if I have to bail, like where I'm gonna like, which what what's the worst case scenario for like this happening?
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Because usually the ladder is gonna kick out, like it goes out behind you if no one's there to foot it.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then like on this one, I feel like I would hit the slanted roof, and then like that would somewhat arrest my fall, and then I'd parkour off of it.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Dude, I I'm not sure.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Those days are far behind me.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: That's if any if either one of us is gonna pull that off, it'd be you.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it would be terrible.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, no, because if you fell, you'd just roll your ankle and be like, oh, I know.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: I was didn't a yard today.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: I was like, ow, my ankle hit a big hole in the middle of it.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: It just stepped right in, it just turned it.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: And then Josh is walking around with a hand cramp and an eight-foot extension pole.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: I'm like, what are you doing?
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: I'm measuring.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, that totally makes sense.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: Pretend I didn't break anything.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Quiet.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: I gotta go prep the neighbor's shutters before they figure it out.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: It'd been better if I had the paint I painted them.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Oofs.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'd be so mad if you painted those.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: Because then you own it all for free.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, and then there were some that were really up high.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Thankfully, you only mess with the ones on the bottom.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: The problem is I sanded them, and then I'm like, oh no.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: And I looked up.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: I was like, dude, the ones on the bottom look different than the ones on the top.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: And they did it.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: They look the same.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: They don't, they look the same.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: They're so funny.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: I was like, thank god these are chalky and old.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: It would be funny if we ended up painting those because that happens a lot when you paint shutters that are attached.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: It'll be prepped on the bottom.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: You work good, dude.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: Sweet.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: We, you know, helping our future selves out.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: So anyway, I hope I don't fall in a bush tomorrow.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: And uh, we just finish this work and hopefully one more day of exterior, and then we'll be all done.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: That's the dream.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Sweet.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: Well, until next time.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: Y'all take it easy.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: Work smart and have a good one.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: Don't fall off anything.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: See ya.
