- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory. Foul Territory Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Zajada Charma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:12Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic Patrick. It is
- 0:18Speaker 1: not even mid May, but look, we're gonna talk about
- 0:24Speaker 1: what every what's on everyone's mind. The Cubs lost two
- 0:28Speaker 1: of three to the Rangers. I mean, if you look
- 0:32Speaker 1: at how those games went, if you want to be
- 0:35Speaker 1: concerned about the offense, you can be concerned about the offense.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Two games getting shut out in a row. You know, yeah,
- 0:41Speaker 1: I think offense. I tried say this every season when
- 0:45Speaker 1: the offense is doing really well, like these things go
- 0:48Speaker 1: in waves with offense. I still think this is a deep,
- 0:51Speaker 1: talented offense and they're gonna score a lot of runs
- 0:55Speaker 1: and continue to score a lot of runs. But we
- 0:58Speaker 1: know what the need is on this team. Everybody knows
- 1:01Speaker 1: what the need is on this team. Matthew Boyd's out
- 1:04Speaker 1: for six ish weeks, Kate Horton is out for the season.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Edward Cabrera looks okay but not great. It doesn't look
- 1:14Speaker 1: like a dominant force out there, and that's kind of
- 1:18Speaker 1: like jameson Tian's are really good, like mid rotation arm
- 1:22Speaker 1: showed him and Agua has been great. You need more arms.
- 1:25Speaker 1: We don't know when Justin Steel is coming back exactly,
- 1:28Speaker 1: so let's talk trade. I know it's not gonna happen today.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I think Patrick Bailey was traded by the Giants. That
- 1:36Speaker 1: was an early trade, aggressive move by Cleveland, a defense
- 1:40Speaker 1: first guy that you know, arguably one of the best
- 1:43Speaker 1: defensive catchers in the game, So that there was a
- 1:47Speaker 1: move that happened. But I don't know if the Giants
- 1:51Speaker 1: are in full cell mode. But that's a team that
- 1:54Speaker 1: even before this trade, that trade went down, that you
- 1:57Speaker 1: and I had kind of circled as Hey, here as
- 2:00Speaker 1: a team that is struggling and you know, may start
- 2:04Speaker 1: selling some pictures at some point. And they have two
- 2:07Speaker 1: names that make a lot of sense. One that's an
- 2:10Speaker 1: impending free agent and Robbie Ray, who I know the
- 2:13Speaker 1: Cubs have had at least interest in. I don't know
- 2:17Speaker 1: if they were aggressive in trying to sign him when
- 2:19Speaker 1: he was a free agent. I don't think that was
- 2:20Speaker 1: the case, but they liked Robbie Ray at that time,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and now he's an impending free agent. Would make a
- 2:26Speaker 1: lot of sense.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't read too much into the Bailey deal
- 2:33Speaker 2: in terms of like timing or that things are being accelerated.
- 2:38Speaker 2: The Giants are right now one of those just outlier organizations,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and that when you have Buster Posey, a Hall of
- 2:48Speaker 2: Fame caliber player in the Bay Area who's also part
- 2:52Speaker 2: of the ownership group of the Giants, seemingly having issues
- 2:59Speaker 2: with the player manning the position that he handled so
- 3:03Speaker 2: well for so long, it felt to me like a
- 3:06Speaker 2: large scale version of some of the like David Ross
- 3:09Speaker 2: Wilson Contreras stuff of how kind of you know, Ross
- 3:13Speaker 2: wanted certain things from Wilson, and Wilson brought different things
- 3:16Speaker 2: to the table. Not to go down that rabbit hole,
- 3:21Speaker 2: but just like the Giants do things differently, so like
- 3:25Speaker 2: they're not a.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Group think organization.
- 3:29Speaker 2: But when you look at you know, they have a
- 3:30Speaker 2: manager who had no experience of professional baseball.
- 3:36Speaker 3: They're off to a bad start.
- 3:39Speaker 2: They could really use an infusion of young talent. They're
- 3:44Speaker 2: kind of stuck with a lot of big contracts that
- 3:48Speaker 2: right now appear to be underwater, and no doubt Ray
- 3:55Speaker 2: I feel like through the year, you know, like they're
- 3:57Speaker 2: just names that you hear. I don't know between social media,
- 4:01Speaker 2: talking to scouts, talking to club officials, like Robbie Way
- 4:04Speaker 2: was just one of those names like oh yeah, that's
- 4:06Speaker 2: a guy you know, we'd like, would make sense, appears
- 4:09Speaker 2: to be healthy, back on track, would check a lot
- 4:14Speaker 2: of boxes.
- 4:15Speaker 3: But you also have Logan Webb, who.
- 4:20Speaker 2: If he becomes available, would I think, jump to the
- 4:23Speaker 2: top of that list of just like a no doubt ace.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I feel like we spent a lot of times at
- 4:28Speaker 2: the trade deadline talking about, you know, sort of middling
- 4:33Speaker 2: players or like they can just like you plug a hole,
- 4:37Speaker 2: fill a gap. But I mean this would be he
- 4:40Speaker 2: would not be just a rental. It would be like
- 4:42Speaker 2: just a foundational piece and really kind of a talent
- 4:49Speaker 2: that's disappearing across the game, just like a workhorse, number
- 4:53Speaker 2: one starter.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe I'm looking at up right now. Three
- 4:57Speaker 1: straight seasons with two hundred innings. I mean that that
- 5:01Speaker 1: does not happen anymore. So three straight he's on the
- 5:04Speaker 1: IL right now with Presidas. I believe in his knee
- 5:10Speaker 1: that doesn't I don't want to speculate we're not there
- 5:12Speaker 1: covering that team, but just listen hearing that doesn't sound
- 5:18Speaker 1: like something that's, oh no, that's going to keep him
- 5:20Speaker 1: down for the season type thing. The numbers, the result numbers.
- 5:24Speaker 1: You know, his his era is not great right now,
- 5:28Speaker 1: but his ground ball rate is great. He's got like
- 5:32Speaker 1: the peripherals. Kind of suggests like, look, get this guy healthy,
- 5:36Speaker 1: you know, in two three weeks and he's going to
- 5:38Speaker 1: be just He's the same pitcher he's gotten Cy Young
- 5:41Speaker 1: votes the previous four seasons, finished second in twenty three.
- 5:48Speaker 3: This is a.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Guy that you'd want starting Game one of the playoffs.
- 5:54Speaker 1: He would be maybe I'll say this, this is a
- 5:58Speaker 1: guy you would trust starting Game one of the playoffs
- 6:01Speaker 1: and in front of that Cubs defense. A guy that
- 6:04Speaker 1: gets like fifty five sixty percent ground ball rate. That's insane,
- 6:08Speaker 1: Like he'd be so good with the Cubs defense. I
- 6:12Speaker 1: just think it would if there's any chance that he's available.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I believe two years after this his contract goes, so
- 6:19Speaker 1: it's gonna be tough. I don't think this is the
- 6:21Speaker 1: type of thing where the Giants are gonna be like, yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 1: we're we gotta sell them Robbie Ray. Robbie Ray would
- 6:27Speaker 1: be more in that category if the Giants are still
- 6:30Speaker 1: if they're if they continue down this path, and it's
- 6:33Speaker 1: early July, mid July. Robbie Ray's almost certainly, assuming he's healthy,
- 6:37Speaker 1: is almost certainly gonna be available, But he does have
- 6:40Speaker 1: a longer injury history Logan Web, this is a rarity
- 6:43Speaker 1: for him. Like I just said four straights or did
- 6:45Speaker 1: I say three? Three straight seasons of a two hundred innings.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I think the year before that was like one hundred
- 6:50Speaker 1: and ninety plus the like one hundred and eighty right
- 6:52Speaker 1: now is the new two hundred. If you get to
- 6:54Speaker 1: under and eighty, that's your workhorse in today's game. It's
- 6:58Speaker 1: it's like him and Zach Wheeler. I don't think there's
- 7:01Speaker 1: really anyone else that you can trust. If they're healthy,
- 7:04Speaker 1: they're going two hundred. These guys are rare. Now. I
- 7:09Speaker 1: would take Web in a second, and I think he'd
- 7:11Speaker 1: be huge for this for the Cubs if you can
- 7:15Speaker 1: somehow prime away, there's another ground ball artist of it
- 7:19Speaker 1: that could be available. The Mets, we know that they're struggling.
- 7:24Speaker 1: They're they're rough right now. Clay Holmes, he a former
- 7:32Speaker 1: reliever for the Yankees, signed with the Mets and start
- 7:36Speaker 1: is starting now. He doesn't miss a lot of bats,
- 7:38Speaker 1: but he's he's getting results right now, and he gets
- 7:40Speaker 1: a ton of ground balls as well. I think the
- 7:44Speaker 1: Mets are a team that make, you know, a ton
- 7:46Speaker 1: of sense, go see what's available for them. You know,
- 7:49Speaker 1: David Stearns, he's done this before where the team struggled.
- 7:52Speaker 1: He spent a lot of money. The team struggling got
- 7:55Speaker 1: to move guys, and Clay Holmes is one of those
- 7:59Speaker 1: names that up immediately.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Both names obvious, obvious fits. I just don't see them
- 8:06Speaker 2: making that call anytime soon when you're that far invested
- 8:13Speaker 2: with a payroll what north of three hundred million, and
- 8:18Speaker 2: I don't even know what the luxury tax taxes on
- 8:22Speaker 2: top of that equate to, off the top of my head,
- 8:25Speaker 2: but obviously an enormous sum from a demanding owner in
- 8:32Speaker 2: a kind of relentless market, And so I would imagine
- 8:38Speaker 2: they would certainly wait that out a lot longer. Nothing
- 8:43Speaker 2: imminent the way it was sort of portrayed briefly on
- 8:46Speaker 2: social media last week.
- 8:49Speaker 3: But both names make a ton of sense. I still
- 8:53Speaker 3: think we know this from history.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I think it comes to probably lean more towards a
- 8:57Speaker 2: rental starter when they're going to look at the price
- 8:59Speaker 2: for someone Logan Web and Peralta would be a rental.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Yeah, Freddy Peralta, you.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Probably have a You probably get a nice audience with
- 9:09Speaker 2: him too, when he becomes a free agent, given a
- 9:12Speaker 2: good relationship with Craig Counsel and you know, just kind
- 9:15Speaker 2: of his familiarity with the region. I mean, the Mets
- 9:20Speaker 2: have to treat Holmes as a rental type player because
- 9:24Speaker 2: he has a player option for next year. I believe
- 9:26Speaker 2: it's worth twelve million dollars and assuming he's healthy, he's
- 9:31Speaker 2: got opt out and that would be kind of like
- 9:32Speaker 2: a no brainer.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Yeah, when so you talk about that rumor. A friend
- 9:37Speaker 1: texted me about the Freddy Peralta rumor and I was like, let's,
- 9:42Speaker 1: you know, let's revisit that in July. That it's a
- 9:45Speaker 1: little early, but he's definitely a name to keep on
- 9:47Speaker 1: the radar. And he's like, I got he was at
- 9:50Speaker 1: the playoff game and he was like, we gotta we
- 9:53Speaker 1: gotta adjust those Freddy Chance, Gotta adjust those Freddy Chance.
- 9:57Speaker 1: So so he he's already excited for Freddy Peralta in
- 10:02Speaker 1: a Cubs uniform. I don't look, I think he's another
- 10:05Speaker 1: guy you'd be very comfortable starting game one of a
- 10:07Speaker 1: playoff game. He has owned the Cubs a lot. I
- 10:11Speaker 1: don't I didn't look up the numbers on there. I'm
- 10:13Speaker 1: going off my gut and feel about how he's done
- 10:16Speaker 1: against the Cubs. Obviously the playoff game they got to him,
- 10:20Speaker 1: but it feels like it's very rare that the Cubs
- 10:23Speaker 1: would get to Freddy Peralta. He seemed to stymy them
- 10:27Speaker 1: for the most part. I think he'd be a great addition,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and you talk about like you'd have an audience with him,
- 10:34Speaker 1: whether it's an impending free agent or someone that's under control,
- 10:37Speaker 1: they're gonna have to talk to, like they need pitching
- 10:40Speaker 1: beyond this year. Remember Matthew Boyd jameson Tyewn, I'm missing someone, obviously,
- 10:47Speaker 1: Showdai Monaga. They're all they're all free agents at the
- 10:50Speaker 1: end of this season. The Cubs are gonna need more
- 10:54Speaker 1: rotation help after this season. So if they can either
- 10:59Speaker 1: get someone where they lay the groundwork as a free
- 11:01Speaker 1: agent like Freddy Peralta and say hey, you loved your
- 11:04Speaker 1: two and a half months in Chicago, let's add on
- 11:09Speaker 1: and then like make this a long re you know,
- 11:13Speaker 1: a long term thing, or someone that's available beyond this
- 11:18Speaker 1: year as well. That's that that has to be something
- 11:22Speaker 1: that is in the back of their mind, primarily twenty
- 11:24Speaker 1: twenty six. When you're playing this, well, you gotta look
- 11:27Speaker 1: at twenty twenty six obviously. All right, let's take a
- 11:29Speaker 1: quick break and come back and talk about some other
- 11:33Speaker 1: players that may make sense.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Big Dog, you know how it is, man, We're always
- 11:37Speaker 4: hungry and how do we get our food. We don't
- 11:40Speaker 4: want the stuff that makes our bellies hurt. We go
- 11:42Speaker 4: to Hello Fresh. We find out specifically what we love
- 11:46Speaker 4: to eat, and guess what, Cratzy, I know it helps
- 11:48Speaker 4: you out the house. Old Wifey is happy and the
- 11:50Speaker 4: kids are extra happy.
- 11:52Speaker 5: I'm good at two things, cookie is one of them,
- 11:55Speaker 5: but not trying to choose what we're gonna have. I've
- 11:58Speaker 5: gone fifteen meals and they haven't given me one repeat meal.
- 12:02Speaker 5: There's so many to choose from, and they can make
- 12:04Speaker 5: it easy for me.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think the best part of it is
- 12:07Speaker 4: is for me, I'm very particular. I'm trying new things
- 12:11Speaker 4: and I'm really really liking these things from HelloFresh. Go

- 12:34Speaker 4: I know everybody would love that?
- 12:37Speaker 1: All right, Patrick, let's keep talking about some of these
- 12:40Speaker 1: teams that make sense. How about a name that was
- 12:44Speaker 1: connected to the Cubs all a lot of the offseason,
- 12:49Speaker 1: and then another name on the Diamondbacks who the Cubs
- 12:52Speaker 1: actually had briefly. I don't think Cubs fans loved the
- 12:55Speaker 1: Michael Soroka experience, but what we're seeing right now with
- 13:00Speaker 1: Soroka is kind of what they envisioned for him. And
- 13:02Speaker 1: then obviously Zach Gallan the Diamondbacks. I thought you you
- 13:06Speaker 1: wrote this section in our piece. If people don't know
- 13:10Speaker 1: this is like I should mention that we we this
- 13:14Speaker 1: is we wrote a piece that ten trade candidates on
- 13:19Speaker 1: the athletic uh, you know, from Logan from Logan Web
- 13:23Speaker 1: to Joe Ryan. These are just names you should, you know,
- 13:25Speaker 1: keep it, keep an eye out on. But in that
- 13:29Speaker 1: piece you mentioned how the Diamondbacks aren't likely, like aren't
- 13:33Speaker 1: a team that sells aggressively or isn't going to go
- 13:36Speaker 1: about it where where they're willing to give up. But
- 13:39Speaker 1: right now maybe they're headed towards that if if they
- 13:42Speaker 1: see an opportunity, they they will make moves. Gallon and
- 13:46Speaker 1: Soroka are two names that you know could make some sense.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Yeah, they don't concede easily, and I think give their
- 13:56Speaker 2: organization a lot of credit for you. They see the Dodgers,
- 14:02Speaker 2: you know, the dynasty they built. They see what the
- 14:04Speaker 2: Padres have done in Petco Park. Things aren't working out
- 14:11Speaker 2: well for the Giants, but they've won a bunch of
- 14:13Speaker 2: World Series, you know, this century, and they're like trying,
- 14:18Speaker 2: like they're it's not working in San Francisco, but like
- 14:21Speaker 2: the Giants are trying to win, and the Diamonbacks haven't
- 14:26Speaker 2: like never rolled out like a five year rebuilding plan.
- 14:31Speaker 3: They didn't start tanking, you know, to collect draft.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Picks like and it wasn't that long ago they sneaked
- 14:36Speaker 2: into the playoffs and wound up in the World Series.
- 14:39Speaker 3: There is a ton of time left.
- 14:41Speaker 2: They're creeping back towards five hundred. There's a lot of
- 14:46Speaker 2: talent and experience throughout that organization. So yeah, they're not
- 14:51Speaker 2: thinking about selling. We just have to look at, you know,
- 14:56Speaker 2: sort of names that make sense. And Soroka, you were
- 14:59Speaker 2: on top of this line summer. They saw kind of
- 15:02Speaker 2: adjustments he was making, so you put him in the
- 15:05Speaker 2: right situation if he says healthy. He didn't, and that
- 15:09Speaker 2: trade was a disappointment. And then with Gallen, you know,
- 15:14Speaker 2: I thought it was important to sort of clarify the
- 15:18Speaker 2: level of interest during the off season, and he Cubs
- 15:23Speaker 2: never made an offer, but they were obviously talking to
- 15:26Speaker 2: Scott Boris throughout the off season because he represents lots
- 15:30Speaker 2: of players and one of them, Alex Bregman, obviously woud
- 15:33Speaker 2: up signing with the Cubs, and he has a training
- 15:35Speaker 2: facility in Arizona that Gallen used regularly, to my understanding,
- 15:41Speaker 2: or at least he was a friendly visitor there. So
- 15:45Speaker 2: there's been a dialogue. I think there's some background, some
- 15:49Speaker 2: history there. I think they just didn't have like twenty
- 15:54Speaker 2: one to twenty three million dollars laying around in their
- 15:58Speaker 2: budget leftover, and they didn't like the kind of give
- 16:02Speaker 2: up the draft pick for a you know, pitcher.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Uh you'll be going back into the market, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 3: months later.
- 16:12Speaker 2: And so at least with Gallen, I think he got
- 16:15Speaker 2: off to a really good start and then you had
- 16:18Speaker 2: he got knocked around at Wrigley and like so his
- 16:20Speaker 2: numbers probably aren't great overall now, but that's just sort
- 16:23Speaker 2: of the like small samples we're dealing with here. I
- 16:26Speaker 2: think with Gallon and Soroka, you probably not that the
- 16:30Speaker 2: Damacs are trading anyone anyways right now, but you'd like
- 16:32Speaker 2: to see kind of how they develop over the summer.
- 16:36Speaker 2: And I would think, you know, both names there, you know,
- 16:41Speaker 2: could make sense.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Yeah, Gallen, absolutely, you need to see more from Gallon
- 16:46Speaker 1: right now because his strikeout rate is rough. The stuff
- 16:49Speaker 1: doesn't look as crisp as it has in the past,
- 16:51Speaker 1: so you want to see him find his his rhythm
- 16:53Speaker 1: before you go after him. Uh. Soroka has like a
- 16:57Speaker 1: blow up outing, but outside of that, he's he's been
- 16:59Speaker 1: really solid this season, and the peripherals are like last
- 17:02Speaker 1: year where they're intriguing. Boston is another team that is
- 17:09Speaker 1: struggling right now.
- 17:11Speaker 3: We all know this.
- 17:12Speaker 1: They fired their you know, legendary manager and it's kind
- 17:18Speaker 1: of a mess in Boston right now. The impending veteran
- 17:22Speaker 1: free agent is Sonny Gray, who's getting some good results.
- 17:25Speaker 1: But I'm looking at these numbers. This strikeout rate is rough.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I have no idea what exactly is going on with
- 17:31Speaker 1: Sonny Gray right now. Still, you need to keep an
- 17:36Speaker 1: eye out on him. I would put him in that
- 17:38Speaker 1: category of like, where's this going? Where Canny like find
- 17:43Speaker 1: his rhythm? How does this stuff look? Why does he
- 17:45Speaker 1: have such a low strike out rate? And is that
- 17:47Speaker 1: just a blip or is this something like or is
- 17:51Speaker 1: this like a huge red flag? You have to be
- 17:53Speaker 1: aware of these things. Beyond Sonny Gray. We heard umblings
- 18:00Speaker 1: about the Cubs and the Red Sox in the offseason.
- 18:05Speaker 1: The Red Sox were one of those teams that needed
- 18:07Speaker 1: an infielder, so they were asking about Nico Horner. Nico's
- 18:11Speaker 1: not going anywhere right now. We know that he's extended.
- 18:14Speaker 1: He's the heart and soul of this team. He's not
- 18:16Speaker 1: going anywhere. But can they trade prospects? Is there a
- 18:22Speaker 1: challenge trade here? They have two arms, young arms under control.
- 18:27Speaker 1: I mentioned before the break how this team could really
- 18:31Speaker 1: use some pitching beyond twenty twenty six. Connelly, Early Peyton, Tolly,
- 18:37Speaker 1: like these are two names that you know, top one hundred,
- 18:40Speaker 1: top fifty type prospects, you'd love to have them. You'd
- 18:47Speaker 1: love to add one of those guys. I don't know.
- 18:50Speaker 1: We had a question in our mail bag is Matt Shaw?
- 18:53Speaker 1: Would you trade Matt Shaw? I don't know about that.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I don't know if i'd trade Matt Shaw? Like is
- 18:59Speaker 1: Matt Shaw ailable? Is after the type of challenge shade
- 19:02Speaker 1: you could make. Does trading Kevin al Contra make sense? Absolutely?
- 19:06Speaker 1: I think that makes sense. But these are the types
- 19:08Speaker 1: of things that you have to consider when when you're
- 19:11Speaker 1: looking at a team like Boston.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I think.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Sonny Gray was sort of our entry into kind of
- 19:19Speaker 2: the more interesting stuff of what we had heard, you know,
- 19:22Speaker 2: really pretty deep into the winter, pretty close to spring
- 19:28Speaker 2: training about Boston's And obviously they made some other moves to.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Kind of rearrange their.
- 19:36Speaker 2: You know, they're still not like quite out of it yet,
- 19:40Speaker 2: but I don't have a whole lot of confidence that
- 19:43Speaker 2: they're going to figure it out and turn it around.
- 19:47Speaker 2: But they are sort of built to like compete for
- 19:52Speaker 2: the last wildcard spot, Like that's kind of how their
- 19:55Speaker 2: operation appears to be run these days. And there's obviously
- 19:59Speaker 2: a lot of familiarity between Jed Hoyer's front office and
- 20:05Speaker 2: chief baseball officer Craig Reslo's got a big, big title there.
- 20:13Speaker 2: But yeah, I think this is one where I'm curious
- 20:16Speaker 2: if you if you trade someone like Matt Shaw, I
- 20:18Speaker 2: think you're going after logan web not kind of like
- 20:22Speaker 2: a starter who's still kind of figuring it out. I'm
- 20:27Speaker 2: with you, Like Sonny Gray, I think they would certainly
- 20:30Speaker 2: kick that around. He's you know, this isn't I'm trying
- 20:36Speaker 2: to think what Sonny Gray's peak was. It was a
- 20:37Speaker 2: long time ago. I mean, it was just like basically
- 20:40Speaker 2: like I feel like like Jed and THEO were sort
- 20:43Speaker 2: of like arriving in Chicago.
- 20:44Speaker 3: I'm remembering like sort of like like last rebuild.
- 20:48Speaker 2: So I don't know if he's the guy that would be,
- 20:52Speaker 2: you know, kind of number one on your list or
- 20:54Speaker 2: your guy you plugged to start in a playoff series.
- 20:58Speaker 2: And if not that, like, I guess it depends on
- 21:02Speaker 2: how dire their pitching situation is this summer, Like do
- 21:04Speaker 2: they need guys to plug in to.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Like just you cover innings?
- 21:11Speaker 2: They need bodies, like have they locked up this division?
- 21:18Speaker 2: You know, kind of around the trade deadline, like what
- 21:21Speaker 2: are the odds there is it? Trying to win the division,
- 21:24Speaker 2: trying to win the World Series, like all of that stuff.
- 21:27Speaker 3: A lot to be.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Determined around the kind of Red Sox placement on our list.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Absolutely, let's take a quick break and then come back
- 21:37Speaker 1: and talk about some other options from a variety of teams.

- 21:55Speaker 5: whole field. I don't need to be close to the field.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Got to be a little higher out of the son.
- 22:00Speaker 5: I'm bougie that way.
- 22:02Speaker 4: Of course you are. And guess what. You have a

- 22:45Speaker 3: Patrick.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Maybe the Cubs go back to the Miami Marlins. Well,
- 22:50Speaker 1: they nearly traded for his Whu's Lozardo to two off
- 22:55Speaker 1: seasons ago. This offseason they did trade for Edward Cabrera.
- 22:58Speaker 1: We know last summer they engaged with the Marlins talking
- 23:03Speaker 1: about a variety of arms. Is Sandy al Contra available
- 23:08Speaker 1: again again? The numbers aren't blowing you away. He's not
- 23:11Speaker 1: striking guys out again yet, but we know what the
- 23:15Speaker 1: upside is and what's the price. I would also just
- 23:19Speaker 1: say that the Marlins have so much pitching depth in
- 23:22Speaker 1: the minors that maybe we don't know who all is
- 23:26Speaker 1: available with them, So just engaging them in general is
- 23:29Speaker 1: always worth worth your time.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I think that that's a great point. That's sort of
- 23:37Speaker 2: why Sandy's mentioned there like will they or won't they?
- 23:44Speaker 2: They do appear to be turning a corner competitively, Not
- 23:47Speaker 2: like they're gonna chase down the Braves or anything, but
- 23:50Speaker 2: they're kind of gradually building this up. And like you said,
- 23:55Speaker 2: they've they've had so much overlap, so much interaction.
- 23:59Speaker 3: I gotta think each side sort.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Of knows where the other stands, and it's an easy conversation.
- 24:08Speaker 3: To be had.
- 24:09Speaker 2: I think the Cubs with you know, you're hoping for
- 24:11Speaker 2: a player to get back to that cig award level
- 24:15Speaker 2: and maybe a contrac won't ever, but having that, you know, essentially,
- 24:22Speaker 2: but if he gets traded by that point, he would
- 24:24Speaker 2: have like almost a season and a half under his belt.
- 24:28Speaker 2: I think the Cubs would feel really good about the
- 24:31Speaker 2: arm talent and being able to work with that, rather
- 24:35Speaker 2: than a pitcher who's still sort of feeling his way
- 24:38Speaker 2: back out even if he's healthy, he's not wasn't quite
- 24:41Speaker 2: in rhythm last year.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and another name, And when it comes to health,
- 24:49Speaker 1: you know, he just came back from I believe back issues.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Joe Ryan. The Twins are are struggling as well. Did
- 24:59Speaker 1: they they had to sell off last summer? Do they
- 25:02Speaker 1: do that again, we know that they There was some
- 25:05Speaker 1: talk about Joe Ryan last summer. The cost was sky high,
- 25:09Speaker 1: as you should expect. He's he's the type of guy
- 25:13Speaker 1: that you know still you know, I think he's thirty now,
- 25:17Speaker 1: but still he's young enough and talented enough that he's
- 25:20Speaker 1: the type of arm that I would say is like
- 25:25Speaker 1: kind of changes the trajectory of your rotation. He's he's
- 25:28Speaker 1: an impactful arm and someone that would probably cost a
- 25:31Speaker 1: decent amount, but the type of guy that you know
- 25:35Speaker 1: that's a big move at the deadline.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Yeah, he also just got an m Ryan his right elbow.
- 25:42Speaker 3: I believe, Oh is that is that what it was?
- 25:44Speaker 2: Okay, he didn't didn't It didn't sideline him obviously. Our
- 25:49Speaker 2: guy Dan Hayes has much more info read YEP.
- 25:56Speaker 3: On the Athletic for.
- 25:57Speaker 2: His Twins coverage, which I did had a great like
- 26:01Speaker 2: kind of behind the scenes of that teardown last summer.
- 26:04Speaker 2: It was kind of staggering, and that Ryan did not
- 26:08Speaker 2: get moved would presumably put him back in play this summer.
- 26:15Speaker 2: I don't see the Twins mounting any like serious run
- 26:20Speaker 2: towards a division title, even though it's not a very
- 26:22Speaker 2: good division. I think when I look at that division,
- 26:27Speaker 2: I don't see the Tigers selling even with the school news,
- 26:32Speaker 2: Like I think they have enough there and they're so
- 26:35Speaker 2: committed to this year that they have to see that out.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Not really sold on the White Sox, but also.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Don't see them making a lot of trades with the Cubs.
- 26:45Speaker 2: And yeah, the Royals are sort of like probably gonna
- 26:49Speaker 2: be in that same position they were last year when they.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Signed Seth Lugo to an extension.
- 26:56Speaker 2: And so that's why you know, kind of our process
- 26:59Speaker 2: of elimination here that if Joe Ryan is healthy, he
- 27:05Speaker 2: would be a really nice addition to this group.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and one final name that we mentioned was someone
- 27:11Speaker 1: a name that we heard connected to the Cubs briefly
- 27:14Speaker 1: in the winter, and we know they've done their homework
- 27:18Speaker 1: on him because he was pitching in Japan and they
- 27:21Speaker 1: really scout Japan hard. Foster Griffin. He's started off really
- 27:25Speaker 1: well with Washington. Washington is going to be looking for
- 27:28Speaker 1: prospects that that's just where they are. So it doesn't
- 27:31Speaker 1: matter that he's doing well. He's on a he's on
- 27:33Speaker 1: a one year deal. I believe he's having a solid
- 27:38Speaker 1: season that this isn't a this isn't a here's your
- 27:42Speaker 1: number one starter for the playoffs type move, but it.
- 27:45Speaker 5: Is a.
- 27:47Speaker 1: The Cubs need starting help and this guy would go
- 27:51Speaker 1: right into the rotation. That's the type of move that
- 27:54Speaker 1: this would be. It's not like he can't help or
- 27:56Speaker 1: he would be like where do you put him in
- 27:57Speaker 1: the rotation?
- 27:58Speaker 3: He would fit.
- 27:59Speaker 1: It's just he's not as you know, it's not like
- 28:03Speaker 1: a blow you away move. But maybe maybe they need
- 28:07Speaker 1: multiple moves and maybe they can't pull off the blow
- 28:09Speaker 1: you maybe blow you away move.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Yeah, if they think this guy's a viable part of
- 28:18Speaker 2: a playoff pitching staff, maybe not a rotation, then I
- 28:22Speaker 2: guess theoretically you could go buke up.
- 28:25Speaker 3: The bullpen, like if you get another.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Another closer, a seventh inning guy and Foster Griffin all
- 28:32Speaker 2: of a sudden, like your pitching staff could look different.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Or maybe you know, you just have have a you're
- 28:39Speaker 2: getting back some of those layers that you've lost through
- 28:41Speaker 2: all these injuries here, and you know, it will be
- 28:44Speaker 2: interesting to see, you know that comes up in just
- 28:47Speaker 2: like inundated with injury news, but it'll be interesting to see,
- 28:55Speaker 2: like can they get healthy? Do they get healthy? Like
- 28:58Speaker 2: what you are what seems like kind of obvious now
- 29:04Speaker 2: could shift in a couple of weeks, a couple months.
- 29:09Speaker 2: I still think it always goes back to pitching, that
- 29:11Speaker 2: they will acquire pitchers plural before the trade deadline. But
- 29:15Speaker 2: there are gonna sound like council here ways with your innings, puzzle,
- 29:20Speaker 2: your outgetters, YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 29:22Speaker 3: There's different ways to go about it.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Yeah, Speaking of injury news, I think over the weekend,
- 29:27Speaker 1: reporters out in Texas reported that Hunter Harvey had another setback,
- 29:34Speaker 1: stress reaction in his triceps, I believe is the diagnosis.
- 29:38Speaker 1: So he's that's another he's shut down for a little while.
- 29:42Speaker 1: That's you know, that was always a risk. We knew
- 29:44Speaker 1: that when they signed him Upside, but huge injury risk.
- 29:49Speaker 1: And it seems like they're they're getting waylaid here by
- 29:52Speaker 1: the injuries with Hunter Harvey, another reliever, you know, out
- 29:55Speaker 1: for a little while. We'll see how healthy that bullpen
- 29:58Speaker 1: can get and how healthy this staff gets over the
- 30:00Speaker 1: next few weeks here. I think, you know, we got
- 30:04Speaker 1: a while before we get updates on Justin Steele and
- 30:09Speaker 1: Matthew Boyd, but we're going to be talking about pitching
- 30:13Speaker 1: for a long time, Patrick, this is this is pretty
- 30:17Speaker 1: much like you had your two ten game winning streaks.
- 30:21Speaker 1: You've done a great job of kind of setting yourself
- 30:24Speaker 1: up to be a playoff team. You were going to
- 30:27Speaker 1: hit a rough patch. That's inevitable. That's how baseball works.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Baseball is a long season. You have ups and downs.
- 30:34Speaker 1: How do you get through it? How do you like
- 30:36Speaker 1: when when issues pop up? How do you address them?
- 30:39Speaker 1: And I think we know what the issue is. The
- 30:41Speaker 1: primary issue is, you know, pretty obvious at the moment.
- 30:45Speaker 1: How do they address it? When do they address it?
- 30:48Speaker 1: It's going to take a little while. It doesn't happen
- 30:49Speaker 1: all the time, like very rarely can they do something
- 30:52Speaker 1: this early. But it has to be talked about because
- 30:55Speaker 1: it's so obvious what needs to be done, and we're
- 30:58Speaker 1: going to continue talking about it. It's going to be
- 30:59Speaker 1: a topic of conversation. This won't be the last episode
- 31:03Speaker 1: of Trade Talk. It just won't be. That's just how
- 31:06Speaker 1: it is. We will be back with more episodes this week.
