- 1:25tracked down I don't know, it's about fifty runners and in no particular order.
- 1:30I'm going to try and squeeze them in. They're all local runners that
- 1:32have done the London Marathon on Sunday, so don't go away. Time to
- 1:38get that bru going. Two sugars for me music right here in Kents by
- 1:46local artists on Academy, the local music there. Glymyas are beginning to end.
- 2:06Now were joined in the studio. Now she was in last week before
- 2:08the London Marathon and she was so excited to be running on the day.
- 2:14So welcome to Louisa. Hello, Louisa, how are you good? Thank
- 2:16you very much? And now there did it live up to your expectations?
- 2:21Absolutely? I'm still in euphoria, are you really? Yeah? Okay,
- 2:24so you'll be climbing on the ceiling nottspect during this interview recap in the day.
- 2:30So last week we discussed all the neaty gurty about your training. You
- 2:35was really you was kind of bring it on. So runners through your day?
- 2:39How did your day start? Very early? So I got up at
- 2:43quarter pus five. I was picked up by a friend and brought down to
- 2:46the coach down at three Hills, where you could tell already there was a
- 2:51bit of excitement in the air, a lot of nerves in the air people
- 2:53trying to get back to sleep. Knew there was no chance of me going
- 2:58back to sleep, so chatted away. I had a few laughs and arrived
- 3:04very quickly, very quickly. We were suddenly at Blackheath, but very early,
- 3:07and it was very cold, really cold. So how long did you
- 3:13have to wait before you actually hit the road? I think we were about
- 3:17half past seven ish and I didn't start till ten thirty four. Oh,
- 3:22really quite some time. But we managed to find a place to sit,
- 3:28wrapped ourselves in luckily foil blankets that Nicki Goodwin had brought. So those full
- 3:32blankets you normally get them at the inn, but I suppose Nicky has done
- 3:36enough marathons now to have like a bag full of them. I think I
- 3:38think she got them from. They weren't they were just playing foil blankets.
- 3:42I think she got them from. So they were absolutely fantastic. We sat
- 3:45on one We all huddled together, so you had a bit of company at
- 3:47the start. Then, yeah, how many of you? You know?
- 3:51There were three males and three and four four females there, so it was
- 3:54yeah, it was great. We buzzed off each other, silly little things
- 3:59like somebody and a banana and we were like, should I eat a banana?
- 4:01It started a bit of hysteria. Or somebody was like, have you
- 4:05got your number on? I've got my number on. I'll better get my
- 4:08number on? Y. Have you stripped off yet? Stripped off yet?
- 4:13But actually, although some of people started before each other, we sort of
- 4:16all put our bags in and then went near our waves. Because so Nicky
- 4:20and I are with even though she went off on three, I was on
- 4:24off for eight. It was the same pen that we were going to.
- 4:27So you go into you get a color zone, don't you. Yeah?
- 4:30So what you So? I was blue with a black heath. You were
- 4:31blue. So you was able to stay with your with your friends there until
- 4:35it was time to split up into your zone. Yeah yeah, okay,
- 4:39And then once we got in our zone, I kept it was so cold,
- 4:44I don't think. I think usually I'm a leggings and long sleeves if
- 4:47it's cold, but obviously it was marathon there, so short, so vest
- 4:50it was. But I did. I had my joggers and a top on
- 4:54which are given to a charity once you take them off, and I literally
- 4:58took them off as we walked through to go to the start line and wore
- 5:02some old gloves on her headband because I felt like if I was my head
- 5:05was warm, my hands was warm, I'd be Okay. Yeah, they
- 5:08say that if you put a hat on or a headband, and because all
- 5:11the heat goes out your head, doesn't it. But you just saying that,
- 5:14I was just reminded me. I did a I think it was a
- 5:16half marathon in Paris, and that was a staggered start. And as we
- 5:21went off because all these jumpers and leggings all was lying in the air,
- 5:26and all the down and outs of Paris were all the tramps in Paris were
- 5:30walking around and edded as to the tops. Okay, so you get underway,
- 5:35So I mean that first mile, how did tales about that? So
- 5:40emotional? It was because I've wanted this for so long. I ran for
- 5:43a mile going wow. I actually ran with a lady who'd ran Boston,
- 5:46and she was saying London was far better already. The first mile in she
- 5:50said, the streets I can tell already are lines, whereas Boston was very
- 5:55much hit and miss, she said, with the crowds. So that was
- 5:57quite good. I had a couple of chats with different people. Had my
- 6:00music on at this point, and then I think about Maltwo. My music
- 6:06stopped, told me it was shutting down, did sort of quirrics. I
- 6:11charged it the night before, so I thought I'll just leave it for a
- 6:14little bit. Got to mile four, I thought I'll try and turn it
- 6:15on again. Turned it on. It sang three lines of super Trooper by
- 6:20Abbat, and then to shutting down again. Then I sort of had a
- 6:24thought back to actually when i'd looked that night to see if they were charging,
- 6:28that red light wasn't on. I'd done nothing about it, so it
- 6:30served me right. So for me telling everyone I can't run without music,
- 6:34I just ran twenty four miles without music. Yeah, but that was the
- 6:39one race that you can't affords to, right. Yeah, Okay, so
- 6:44you first saw a rephrase that when did you first see sort of friends that
- 6:48you knew? So six miles? Could he suck? So that was probably
- 6:51by that. Until that point, I was happy as Larry anyway, muscling
- 6:56along, passing people, just taking it all in. It's just every little
- 7:00bit I just took in. I thought, you know, I may never
- 7:02do this again. So I'm going to enjoy every bit, and then I
- 7:05saw the club at Unfortunately I wasn't wearing the club colors because I was wearing
- 7:11my charity vest, so I had to shout and say it's me and wave
- 7:15to them. And then pretty much from then on, I think every few
- 7:19miles there was somebody. If it wasn't my family, my husband and my
- 7:23son, it was the club, my hairdresser on the way around, and
- 7:31then next so I did. I did know she was going up, but
- 7:36I didn't think i'd see her. But yeah, so when I just got
- 7:40all excited as soon as I saw somebody as well, so that kept me,
- 7:44really kept me going, oh great, great, And yeah, I
- 7:46must admit that we saw you at the cutty shop. And it's a great
- 7:49spot because everyone is buzzing, isn't it. It hasn't got into the toy
- 7:54zone at six six miles and you know, you know if you get on
- 7:59that right end and as you come around, you know you're going to see
- 8:01us. So yeah, I was there with the folks that running club,
- 8:05and I think we just about saw everybody. Yeah, well we're gonna do
- 8:09We're gonna take a little break now because I've got this one lined up for
- 8:11you because this might sum up your day? Is take that? Could it
- 8:16be magic? That would take that? Could it be magic? Probably sums
- 8:39up the day on Sunday and I hit the right button. There's times.
- 8:43Okay, Luisa, back to you just for a minute. Where did we
- 8:48get to We've we've done cutty Sock and so I mean you were floating around
- 8:54at cutty Sock. When did it really start to get tough? I don't
- 8:58know. I really don't know. I to tell you truth, I think
- 9:01I fueled really well and had mentally, I really prepared myself well. So
- 9:07every five miles I took a gel in between that's one of the salt tablet
- 9:13things, and drank and then gave myself targets. So when I hit twenty,
- 9:18I was like, imagine it's the end of a school day and I'd
- 9:20had to have gone out and run a seven miler and then and then just
- 9:24it ticked down. It just ticked down. I think I honestly, the
- 9:28whole way around, I loved every minute. If you see my photos,
- 9:31I'm literally in I thought you were running with your hands. I thought you
- 9:35were running with your hands in the air because I never saw you any other
- 9:39picture, but without the hands of the air, I'm smiling and every picture
- 9:43I think, as I say, I just took it all in. And
- 9:48there's sights of London and are fantastic. You know, I'm round Canary while
- 9:50thinking, oh, yeah, I lovely. You know it's all Tower Bridge
- 9:54and you know there are yeah, everything. I sort of took right in
- 9:58the whole way around. Yeah, no walls hit right, brilliant. Okay,
- 10:01now we're going to be We're joined now by another runner, Lisa Smith.
- 10:05Hello, Lisa, how are you? Hey? I'm good. How
- 10:07are you? Yeah? Good, excellent? Right now. You were there
- 10:11and we're going to talk to you in depth later on. But you're a
- 10:13bit of a reluctant marathoner, weren't you. How did you get your place
- 10:16for the marathon? Oh? I was really lucky. I got the club
- 10:20ballot place right, and so you didn't have any pressure to get any money
- 10:24or anything like that. All you had really was the pressure from your colleagues
- 10:28was lit. Yeah, well not from them directly, but you probably thought
- 10:31that you don't want to let them down, do you. No, I
- 10:33had to. Everybody wants that place, so I had to prove that I
- 10:37deserve to have that place, even though I don't like running. No,
- 10:41because I remember, well, I didn't actually speak to you, but my
- 10:46partner Su said, oh, Lisa's just done twenty miles and she hated it.
- 10:52But I mean, it's all over now. Did you enjoy the day?
- 10:58I did. I expected to be tired physically. I didn't expect the
- 11:03emotional tiredness that came with it. So I think the whole week leading up
- 11:07to the marathon, I cried all the time. Nobody could look at me
- 11:11or talk to me, or I couldn't even look at my mamathon my shoes
- 11:15that was wearing for the marathon without crying. So I was just exhausted.
- 11:20But I've completed it. Now, I've completed running onto the next thing,
- 11:24hanging trainers up. Okay, coming back to you, Louisa, would you
- 11:28agree with that that even that the build up was emotional as well? I
- 11:31mean, I mean when you was at school, was you kind of teaching
- 11:35the kids but thinking what should I do it? Absolutely? Yeah, I
- 11:39think every night I went home and thought about it and had I got all
- 11:41the right equipment? I was doing anything right? And yeah, just things
- 11:46like you know, everyone's all the time saying oh, good look, good
- 11:48look, and you don't want to let people down. You want to complete
- 11:52it, you know, you want to complete it for your charity or for
- 11:54the club, or just for your own self. I mean for me,
- 11:56it was very much about me as well, doing it something I'd wanted to
- 12:01do. All those rejections and yeah, just remind her listeners how many rejections.
- 12:05Eighteen rejections. Yeah, okay, so right, so we were talking
- 12:09about the running through the sites of London, so you did have time to
- 12:13focus on having a look round. It distracted me. I suddenly would see
- 12:18something and then another mile had gone, or I'd see something else and I
- 12:22was like, oh, one of my husband. I knew he was going
- 12:24to be at Deptford, so I was looking for him for ages and that
- 12:26whole mile just disappeared because I was too busy looking for my husband. So
- 12:31yeah, I really took in things and tried to distract myself. I find
- 12:35that with any of my runs if I'm distracted. Hence I like running with
- 12:39people because we talk and I get very distracted. Then it passes by.
- 12:43Yeah, so you saw your family, did you actually start or did you
- 12:46keep going? Quick cuddles twice? Two quick cuddles twice. On the third
- 12:50I was twenty four. He was at twenty four miles with my charity.
- 12:54I didn't stop there because it was twenty four miles and I was, yeah,
- 12:56in absolute passion of I'm nearly then, so I just high five there.
- 13:01Yeah, but lots of high fives on the route. Yeah. This
- 13:03is another thing. I remember when year we managed to actually get onto the
- 13:07Embankment and this chep said to me, ever ago, I said, well,
- 13:11you've only got half a mile. He went all for a mile.
- 13:15Oh no, I don't know if I can do all for a mile.
- 13:18I thought it would be really pleased, but he did so a few choice
- 13:20words. But no, But the Embankment we tried to get to. Well,
- 13:24we got to the Embankment, but from experience, you cannot get near
- 13:28the front row on the Embankment. So we then went back to the Haymarket.
- 13:31So okay, so you've seen your family in Deptford and when was the
- 13:35next point at Call? So the next part us Call eleven miles was my
- 13:41cheer station from my charity. Right, So again I hunted them down and
- 13:45got to the right side where they were stood. But again looking for them
- 13:48distracted me because I didn't know where they were because it's all the charities,
- 13:52isn't it. So again found them just I just did again a hands up
- 13:58yeah yeah, but clearly ended up has through the air and then yeah just
- 14:03then again carried on. I think the next at fourteen the hairdresser appeared again.
- 14:09Seventeen was it was you lot this likes me chuckle that it's like you
- 14:16got planned all along the route, you know, nail varnish their message.
- 14:20That would have been nice. Yeah, okay, so we saw you we
- 14:24were about sixteen or seventeen, and you look really good and happy and was
- 14:30to be honest, was that a show? Oh you saw people? You
- 14:33bit down and saw people. Yeah. I just enjoyed it, enjoyed I
- 14:37think, as I said, it was just the thing I'd wanted for so
- 14:41long that I thought, you need to enjoy every minute of this because it
- 14:43may never may never happen again. You know, you never know, do
- 14:46you? But yeah, I absolutely, because I think I saw people a
- 14:52lot. I was lucky. I was lucky that I had so much support
- 14:54along route. Really right, so you saw us about sixteen seventeen. Oh,
- 15:01then you saw your husband again eighteen he's a canary wolf. Yeah.
- 15:05I actually made a friend called Tom as well. Tom was from Swindon.
- 15:07He was doing cancer research. He had two children. But we ranntled twenty
- 15:11together as well. And then he said my legs are getting heavy, and
- 15:16I said, I'm just going to keep blood. Yeah. So that was
- 15:18really nice as well because we kept quite a good pace together. Right,
- 15:22So you're coming up into the embankment now, I mean it was crazy at
- 15:26the amendment and you probably turned that right turn. It's all big bin.
- 15:30How does it feel? Then? Oh? Amazing? And then the countdown
- 15:33of six hundred, eight hundred and four hundred wow, And I feel like
- 15:35I can't really remember them all. I think I was in such a like,
- 15:39oh my god, oh my gosh. And I knew i'd come under
- 15:41four then, not quite as I thought I'd know nowhere near got the time
- 15:46i'd got, but I knew I was under four, So I my watch
- 15:50at that point. I decided to be silly at that point because you look
- 15:54at it the clock, and the clock's not really right for your time,
- 15:56isn't it, Because there's so many different start times. Many people have started
- 16:00different waves and things like that. So can you remember what the clock said?
- 16:04No, No, it was probably a bit for thirty or something.
- 16:07Yeah, and I did know I was being again distraction. Oh look at
- 16:11the clock. How I was at thirty four past? Has it gone past?
- 16:15That? Has it not? But I could see a three fifty five
- 16:18person with you know, in front of me, and I thought I could.
- 16:22I got to him at one point, but then we got funneled.
- 16:26They funneled you across because people crossing, and he got ahead and it all
- 16:30sort of very much slurred and I couldn't keep with him. So I thought,
- 16:33well, I'm under three I'm under four hours. So when did you
- 16:37find out that you were under four hours? So I stopped. I stopped
- 16:38my watch. But they text you the London Marathon, text you straight away
- 16:42as soon as you've gone over that line. And I could not It was
- 16:45like three p fifty one. I could not believe it because you, yeah,
- 16:49well the three fifty five and I had finished before, but it was
- 16:52in a different wave. That was why I'd got confused. Oh yeah,
- 16:57I sobbed literally couldn't believe it. I still I can't believe it. I
- 17:02can't believe it. I think a surprise for you people. I think people
- 17:04are quite shocked as well. So when did you first see your family after
- 17:11that? Oh they have to walk miles. That is a shock. Yeah,
- 17:15I got And the thing was sillily. Being not a regular marathon runer,
- 17:18I've never done one before, I'd taken so much things. So I'd
- 17:22taken a whole change of clothes, shorts, joggers, jumpers, you name
- 17:27it. I had this great, big bag full of stuff, and of
- 17:30course then I had to pick that up and carry it with my foil around
- 17:34me. Then they gave me a Lucas say Dana water, so I had.
- 17:37I literally was like this with my bag, like trying to get through
- 17:41people down to my family, like knocking into people who were getting in my
- 17:47way because it is so busy, and I'm like, I felt like saying
- 17:51people, I was just run a marathon. You get out of my way,
- 17:53you get out of my way. I'm just run a marathon. And
- 17:56eventually found my husband a mile later with the Luckily, he went to E,
- 18:02which is our last name, and some running club went to F.
- 18:06So I went across to everybody, so that was Yeah, to see them
- 18:08again. I cried and friends from my friends had coming to watch as well,
- 18:12so they were all there waiting for me. Brilliant. Okay, well,
- 18:15Luisa, what was the next step you had to you you went back
- 18:18on the train. You had to walk to charing Cross. Yeah, watch
- 18:21charing Cross. The only train that is canceled is the Folkston train. Every
- 18:25other trains there. So then my husband's like, okay, let's get to
- 18:27pick Adilly Underground and March is off. I've now sought myself out, so
- 18:33I've got so many bags now, but still I'm then like, now any
- 18:37step that you have to go down is like oh and then obviously down into
- 18:41the tube. I have to go downsteps. Luckily you've got your medlar and
- 18:44people are like oh so yeah yeah, and obviously free travel with my medal,
- 18:49which was amazing. Brilliant. Yeah. Okay, so the day is
- 18:52nearly over, but I don't think you switch off in it probably doesn't sink
- 18:57until the next day properly know what you've done. So you're a school teacher,
- 19:02what was the next move? You went into school? Absolutely, yeah,
- 19:06there's chance of getting the day off, so I didn't sleep well either
- 19:10because I think where you're taking all the caffeine and the glucase and all the
- 19:12energy drinks, I couldn't get to sleep on the night either, and obviously,
- 19:15oh my god, I've actually done this. I felt like it was
- 19:19a bit like your wedding. You plan for like months and months and it's
- 19:23all over with. Yeah, so it was a bit like But I was
- 19:26really lucky. At schooling staff briefing, everyone clapped me in and got me
- 19:30stand up and they all clapsed again, and then I went into assemblies and
- 19:33since then, lots of children I just did a year eleven this morning about
- 19:37their GCSS and revision, saying, you know, for a short period of
- 19:41time, get the revision done, it's not long, and then you get
- 19:44the outcome out of it. I said, similar to me, you know,
- 19:47the determination of wanting something. Then, Louisa, it has been brilliant
- 19:52having you back in the studio and it's been lovely hearing your story. And
- 19:56I think this year, more than ever that I've noticed that so so many
- 20:00people have been emotional. There were some great times, and I mean,
- 20:03you've told a wonderful story. And there's a big question. Your last question
- 20:08of the interview is would you do another one? Definitely enter the ballot straight
- 20:12where I think I'd really like to do abroad if I do another one,
- 20:17because it is really special. It's something really special and you train a lot.
- 20:21I'm not going to be a willy nilly marathon run. I like some
- 20:23people love to run one every other weekend or you know, three a year
- 20:26or whatever. For me, it's something really special and I definitely will do
- 20:30another one. Maybe Paris will be the next, Luisa. Thank you so
- 20:34much. Once again, Please keep us informed and we'll tell us when your
- 20:40next one will be. Thank you so much. Okay, we've got another
- 20:42song now, and I think these are two guests are going to like this
- 20:45one. There you go. There's a Bruce Springsteen and and a little song
- 21:11for our two guests today, Born to Run, which is what they were.
- 21:15Okay, now we're We spoke briefly just now to a Lisa, but
- 21:19she ran the marathon on Sunday and she's so good she's coming to join us
- 21:25today and so welcome to the show. Lisa. How are you then?
- 21:27You're all right? Yeah, I'm not too bad I feel today, so
- 21:30I'm okay. Yeah, So you told us, you've got a ballot place.
- 21:37But I'll tell you what. We turned the clock back a little bit.
- 21:40I think we go back to if you like your early days, how
- 21:42did you you know your sporty background? How did you get into running?
- 21:47On so growing up? I was all sporty, anything to do with sport.
- 21:52I was in it, every school team going. I played netball for
- 21:56Carlisle. I loved athletics, not so much the run in. I loved
- 22:00cross country because you could smoke in the bushes when the teachers weren't there.
- 22:07I loved the relay. I was excellent on the second leg of the relay,
- 22:11absolutely rubbish at one hundred meters though, which was really weird. And
- 22:15then I went to UNI and my sport kind of fell by the wayside,
- 22:21didn't really do very much. We used to live in Sangay and my husband
- 22:27used to run along Sangay and I'd be like, God, if I ever
- 22:30do that, shoot me, that is so boring, so dull. But
- 22:33I used to do the Raceful Life every year and I would usually walk it.
- 22:37And then one year my friend unfortunately passed away, she had cancer,
- 22:44and another friend of mine said, if you run it Lisa, I will
- 22:48give you a lot more sponsorship money, so I couldn't say no. At
- 22:53the time where I worked Kevin Newman, so he used to be a member
- 22:57of folks In Running Club. I used to work with him for a very
- 23:00short period of time and he said, oh, I think the running club
- 23:04do a free race for life training up at the LEAs. Let me find
- 23:08out and I'll let you know. And he came in the following week gave
- 23:11me this leaflet. I'm like, I really don't want to do that.
- 23:15Kevin. I hate running. And by this point I'd got into the couch
- 23:21to five k. So a friend of mine Gary, he had done couch
- 23:23to five k and it worked. He managed to do Folks in half.
- 23:26And it's like, oh, maybe it's a real person doing it, so
- 23:30it does work. It's not just a runner saying oh yeah, it does
- 23:33work if you build it up. So I turned up on this Sunday morning.
- 23:37My husband had driven me. Both my daughters are in the car and
- 23:41everybody is really sporty and I'm not getting out of the car. It's really
- 23:45daunting. I can't do it for the training. This is the free training
- 23:51the running club provided, but everybody there was just they were all runners and
- 23:56it was quite daunting, so I refused to get out of the car.
- 24:00And then all of a sudden, at the side, I saw somebody who
- 24:03was familiar and she was a mum at the nursery. She looks like me,
- 24:07So we don't look like runners. We're not six foot tall, dead,
- 24:11skinny and everything. We're both or I'm relatively short. She's taller than
- 24:15me. And it was my now best friend Kate, so I recognized her
- 24:18and it just gave me the boost to get out the car. And yeah,
- 24:23from there, I did the training. I ran the Race for Life
- 24:26that year, I carried on and managed to complete the couch to five k
- 24:30training. Kate at the time almost bullied me into doing park Run. I
- 24:38did Park Run, couldn't walk the next day, couldn't sit on the toilet.
- 24:41And then at the time, Folks and Running Club used to do a
- 24:45circuit training, so I joined Folks and Running Club just for the circuit training,
- 24:51and then it just eked out. I turned up to a couple of
- 24:55sessions and then yeah, so when she got over that barrier of being a
- 24:59big confident and if you like knowing that you could run five k I suppose
- 25:03you could almost class yourself as a runner. And then you went on to
- 25:07other things. Yeah, okay, yeah, and right, so I was
- 25:12going to say, what's the furthest you've run? But it's obviously a marathon.
- 25:15So you did you do a lot of local races in between, you
- 25:18know, before before the marathon? I used to do the odd race,
- 25:23so Ashford ten's the Folkston ten. I don't tend to race now only because
- 25:30I don't have the time, and usually most of the races happen over this
- 25:34spring and summer months and I'm usually at a competition with my kids, so
- 25:38they both do athletics, right, So that's another little thing I want to
- 25:41talk about. So you know, you've got a sporty family and so you've
- 25:45kind of turned it around a little bit. You've gone from a runner to
- 25:48coach, is that right? Yeah? So I coached the Folkston Athletics juniors.
- 25:52Oh okay, in I mean juniors do some I'm not straight sports,
- 26:00but they're not quite conventional sports. Sports that when I was growing up as
- 26:03a kid never heard of. So tell her what do you coach then?
- 26:06Yeah, so we coach anything athletics, so all of the run in from
- 26:11the short sprints to usually about fifteen hundred meters with our juniors, long high
- 26:17jump, triple jump we've just started with a few of our juniors, and
- 26:23then all of the throws. So my daughters actually prefer the throw in so
- 26:27javelin, shot, discus, hammer, and yeah, we coach everything.
- 26:33Okay, and can you see that with the advent of the running track,
- 26:37now that you're going to get have you had more interest for youngsters? We've
- 26:41had a lot more juniors signing up or unfortunately having to go on the waiting
- 26:45list because we can only accept so many juniors. One for a safeguard in
- 26:49we need so many coaches per per groups, but also just having that many
- 26:56kids on the track at one time. Yeah, there are waiting lists now,
- 27:00okay, well you wouldn't have thought that. Really, it's amazing that
- 27:06you've got the track and now you've got a waiting list. But you I
- 27:08recently saw a little picture of you with a coaching badge, is that right?
- 27:12Yeah, so I'm now a fully fledged coach and a coach athletics coach
- 27:17well with adults as well. Yeah, I can coach adults so I have
- 27:21had a couple of adults approach me and say, oh, I'm quite fancy
- 27:25having a go at the javelin, for example, would you be able to
- 27:27coach? And yeah, we can. It's juniors and adults alike. Okay,
- 27:33so there you go. You've gone from shying away from running to being
- 27:36a coach what they call it poacher turned gamekeeper. Okay, well we're going
- 27:41to play a bit more music now, a bit more running music, and
- 27:45this is absolutely spot on for you. This is level forty two and it's
- 27:48called running in the Family. So there's a special song for Lisa there,
- 28:11running in the Family, which just susid down to the ground. Now,
- 28:15Lisa, you told us that you've got this a marathon place from the club
- 28:21when you went away, you know, you didn't really expect to do a
- 28:25marathon. What was your first feelings for the first week or so. So
- 28:29I've actually applied to the London ballot seven years on the trot and always had
- 28:34that sigh of relief when you get the rejection email. And then towards the
- 28:38end of last year my name was picked out the ballot and I was actually
- 28:42ill at the time, so it was the last thing that I could have
- 28:45needed that week, and I had a look, it's like, right,
- 28:49sixteen week training plan. That's fine, I can have a good Christmas.
- 28:53January first it or start, and I just kept putting it out of my
- 28:57mind. It didn't really happen. It wasn't exist. January first came round
- 29:02and Kate and I went to Park Run with my new trainers on that I
- 29:06was going to start training with the marathon, and it is it does dawn
- 29:08on you. It's oh, this is it. But it's only five k
- 29:11that first run, so it's fine and anyone can do a five k,
- 29:15but yeah, it does dawn on you that this is the start of a
- 29:18long sixty. Say, okay, so let's jump now to the day itself.
- 29:22You've done the training. I mean I saw you at the leads Lid
- 29:25twenty you did twenty, so I mean that's excellent. You need a twenty
- 29:30in your legs if you're going to do twenty six. So how did you
- 29:33tell us about your day? How did you get up there? And things
- 29:36like that? So I went to London on the train. The coach was
- 29:41too early and I didn't think i'd be finished in time to get the running
- 29:44coach back. So Kate, I'm really fortunate. Kate planned all the travel
- 29:49for me, so we bought the tickets the day before. She said,
- 29:53don't worry, I know what train we're getting, I know how we're getting
- 29:56to black Keith. Kate picked me up about twenty to seven. We picked
- 30:02up our other friend Hazel, and then got to Folkston West. It was
- 30:06really empty, so we were a bit worried because last year Kate turned up
- 30:10to do her marathon and the train had been canceled and she had to quickly
- 30:14drive to Ashford. But it's nice. You turn up to the train station,
- 30:18there's a big sign from Southeastern saying welcome to London marathoners. We got
- 30:22on the train, the slow train all the way up to London Bridge.
- 30:26That was fine, and then you get to London Bridge and there are so
- 30:30many people, but there are also marshals directing you. So if you're going
- 30:34to black Heath you go this way. If you go into Greenwich it's this
- 30:38way. We got up onto the platform, missed the first train only because
- 30:44of the sheer volume of people. We physically couldn't get on the train.
- 30:48There are so many people. We got on the next train. We thought
- 30:53to Greenwich and the train stopped at is it may Hill? I think it
- 31:00was May's Hill, and we just all looked at each other and thinking,
- 31:03well, it was meant to be Greenwich, Why is it May's Hill.
- 31:04Luckily there was a man there and said, we drove through Greenwich. This
- 31:08train doesn't stop, but don't panic. You're actually closer to where you need
- 31:14to be. This way, you just have to go up a massive hill.
- 31:17And this hill we hawked up this hill and I was out of breath
- 31:19by the time I got the it's just to the side. I got to
- 31:25the top of the hill, out of breath and thought, oh my god,
- 31:26how am I going to run a marath out of breath? Walking up
- 31:29a hill? And then I had to leave. I had to leave Kate
- 31:33and Hazl there and I cried. I mean I'd cried all week. I
- 31:37wasn't prepared for the emotional side of the marathon, so yeah, they left
- 31:42me, and I was a bit I don't want to do bit panic.
- 31:48And then Harry Styles as it was played on the massive speakers. My daughter
- 31:53is a massive Harry Styles fan, so it almost felt like I was having
- 31:56a cuddle off her. It was lovely. And then, as you will
- 32:00always do when you go to a race, go and join the toilet king.
- 32:04It's the first thing you do, right, So you finally get to
- 32:07the line and where you go. So tell us about this first couple of
- 32:12miles. It was weird. You walk right up until the very start line,
- 32:17and then everyone starts running and there's a lot of police around, obviously
- 32:22making sure everyone's okay. There's a few spectators. I think they are the
- 32:29people who drop off their runners and just hang around and you're running. It's
- 32:36downhill at that point. The first three three four k feels like it's downhill,
- 32:40so it's quite nice. You settle into your running. When you get
- 32:44to about mile three, that's when the waves joined together. So I was
- 32:50in the red wave. You get to mile three and all of a sudden,
- 32:53from your right, all of these runners just appear from nowhere. That
- 32:58was a bit weird. And then loads of people just stood in the middle
- 33:01of the road. And luckily I was on a Facebook fum beforehand, so
- 33:07I knew what they were doing. They were people who were waiting for friends,
- 33:10for different friends, yeah, yeah, who might have started in at
- 33:15the same or similar time, but just in different areas of the park.
- 33:19So yeah, they agreed to wait and then run together. So where was
- 33:23the first time you saw somebody? Lisa York had already told me she was
- 33:29at the first water station a few weeks ago. Yeah, so she did
- 33:31the first water station at about mile three. She told me she was on
- 33:38the right, so I stayed on the right and had a big cuddle off
- 33:42her, and then off I went. And then there was the next one
- 33:45there Cutty Sark, or just before Cutty Sark. I saw my husband and
- 33:49my youngest daughter. We were lucky. They were just crossing the road,
- 33:53so they were in one of those pens that they have to wait to get
- 33:57from one side to the other. So I was really lucky I saw them.
- 34:00And then just around the corner Kate Hazel and then yourself. Yes,
- 34:06yes, yeah, it's funny. I saw Kate and Hazel and they were
- 34:08about ten yards away from me, and I couldn't get to them. I
- 34:12thought, I'm not leaving this spot, and I never actually spoke to them,
- 34:15but I did see them there. Yeah, So we went underneath it
- 34:19and popped up at seventeen. Did we see you at seventeen, I think,
- 34:22yes, did just a bel you're on the other side of the road.
- 34:24Yeah, yeah, I mean, how does it feel when you see
- 34:27people? Did it really lift you? It does lift you. I mean
- 34:30I was lucky. I saw my husband and daughter three or four times.
- 34:35I saw Kate and Hazel three times, my sisters. I didn't realize she
- 34:38was coming up until two days before the marathon. I saw her a couple
- 34:43of times. Did you ever hairdresser up there? I didn't have a hairdresser.
- 34:46Somebody I work with in our London office. I saw him at Canary
- 34:51Wharf and I don't know how he spotted me, but he really shouted.
- 34:55You couldn't miss him. It was really loud. And then I I saw
- 35:00the club support three times, so it does give you a lift. And
- 35:06then on the course, an Ashford and District runner ran past me. Because
- 35:09I had my folks and top on, I got a pat on the back
- 35:13from him as he ran past, and I hadn't realized that Chris Hogwood,
- 35:17who is a Tunbridge coach for athletics. I didn't realize he was running until
- 35:22he ran past me. And then we ran for a couple of minutes.
- 35:25Together and then oh he was way faster than me, so he took off
- 35:30her. Okay, so right, so you you're running up the embankment.
- 35:32Now you turn right and you see big pin. So how did you feel
- 35:37then? Well, my main thing was I wanted my watch to say five
- 35:40something when I finished. Even if it was five point fifty nine, I
- 35:45didn't mind. I had a couple of injuries going into the day, so
- 35:49just finishing in five something hours was going to be amazing. And then I
- 35:54got to just before Westminster, looked at my and I had the pacer wristband
- 36:01on my wrist, and for the last few miles i'd had a stitch.
- 36:05Couldn't get rid of that. But I was underneath five hours on my pacer
- 36:08wristband, but every mile, for about the last four miles, I was
- 36:13losing about two and a half minutes. So I got to Westminster, looked
- 36:19at my watch and just thought, oh my god, I might actually do
- 36:22this in under five hours. And I got to the eight hundred meters to
- 36:28go, and obviously, being a track athlete or track coach, that's only
- 36:32two times around the track, and I ran and then it's six hundred meters
- 36:37and then it's four hundred meters and then I got to the Mau and bucking
- 36:42In Palace a lot on my left. It's like, Lisa, you've just
- 36:45got to go. And I literally, well, in my head, I
- 36:47was using bolt sprinting down the mouth. My dad has showed me my finishing
- 36:52video from the Telly. I'm not using bowling, but in my head I
- 36:57was. And then I finished. I was fifty nine and thirty four seconds.
- 37:01It's absolutely fantastic from being a reluctant runner to a sub five marathona.
- 37:07Yeah, and so the next you know, you saw your family afterwards.
- 37:10That must have been magical? Was it? It was? But like Louisa
- 37:14says, I don't understand why they make you walk so fear. I picked
- 37:17my bag up, and like Louisa, I'd packed everything. I'd packed a
- 37:22whole change of clothes, trainers, snacks, a drink and then trying to
- 37:28with the foil bank on carry that with a bottle of lucas they'd given you
- 37:30with your medal, a bottle of water. I couldn't open any of the
- 37:35drinks. I was shaking, So every time I walked past an official,
- 37:38they had to open my drinks for me. Luckily, my husband and daughter
- 37:44were waiting just at the end of the lorries, so before horse guards parade,
- 37:50and so I met them and then he took everything off me and carried
- 37:52everything, which okay, so the euphoria of the day, I mean,
- 37:58when did it kind of really hit you that you'd actually was it like a
- 38:02couple of days afterwards when you really really sunk in with all your emotion.
- 38:06You know, when did that kind of hit you? I think probably Tuesday,
- 38:10Wednesday, or probably yeah, yesterday Wednesday. I think Monday I was
- 38:15tired and hungry. I hadn't eaten after the marathon. I felt so sick
- 38:19after all of the sugar that you take on So Monday I was just tired.
- 38:23Tuesday I was tired and still a bit sore. So I think yesterday
- 38:28it's like I actually am a marathon and and you actually came down the stairs
- 38:31just now, do you use I did? It's good? Yeah, okay,
- 38:35before we go now and we are running out of time, and it's
- 38:38been so good of you. Been trying to track you down a week,
- 38:40so good of you to take the time to come in. Lisa, just
- 38:45got any thank you to say before you go obviously, my husband, children
- 38:50to Kate, I couldn't have done it without her and Hazel, the whole
- 38:52folks and running club for obviously believing him and giving me the ballot place and
- 38:58then come in and supporting me on the day. Caroline Curtis for massaging me
- 39:01throughout the whole of my training to make sure I got there with my legs,
- 39:06my sister for coming in surprising me, so everybody it was. It's
- 39:10done. Now the big question, would you do another one? Never again?
- 39:15Never again? You know you say that, but I think in your
- 39:21case, I think you're probably right. Yeah, Lisa, it's been brilliant
- 39:25talking to you, and it's nice to get inside people's head and find out
- 39:29what the day was really like, you know, And you and Louisa have
- 39:35just really explained what it's like and the emotion and the adrenaline and the passion
- 39:38that goes in the day. Even as a spectator, it does rub off,
- 39:43you know, And so I just want to say thanks so much,
- 39:45thank you. Kevin. This is Kevin Daily back in the studio. Busy
- 40:05day to day, I tell you, Okay, we're on one of five
- 40:07point nine Academy of M and coming up. In this hour, I'll be
- 40:10joined by Max Ramsley who'll be telling us all about the Hyde Bay Triathlon.
- 40:21I've got some reports on local football, got some cricket news, Yes,
- 40:30cricket pouring the rain outside, but the cricket season has to start sometime.
- 40:42We got some news from the Folks and Rowing Club, and we got some
- 40:45news on some football Cup finals to be played at Sherton Road at the weekend.
- 40:55I've got a report on my day at the London Marathon, and I've
- 41:04got a roll of honor of many many local runners who took part on Sunday.
- 41:08I'll bound to have forgotten somebody, but I'll do my best, okay.
- 41:14In the meantime, we're going to get this second hour of the show
- 41:15on the road with a bit of local music right here in Kids by local
- 41:22artists on Academy your favorite Folkston on twelfth and A is the Hive Bay Triathlon,
- 41:37organized by the Ashford tri Club, and today we're joined by one of
- 41:39the organizers, Max Ramsley. Hello, Max, how are you n Welcome
- 41:43to the show. Welcome to the show. Now, before we turn our
- 41:45attentions to triathlon, tell us a bit about your sporty background and how you
- 41:50got into triflons. How did I get into triathlon. I'm going to go
- 41:54back probably about ten fifteen years so in my early thirties, and had only
- 42:05done sports as a child. I swam for swam for the county, and
- 42:08then played American football and basketball at school, but only really played at it.
- 42:15Went to university and didn't do any sport at all, got a job,
- 42:17came home, got married, had kids, put a bit of weight
- 42:21on, and got to that point in life was a bit like, oh,
- 42:23I need to do something about this. So I started running just on
- 42:29my own, and then I entered a five k and that led to ten
- 42:32k and then next thing you know, I've entered a half marathon on a
- 42:37whim, which I did and I completed and found quite enjoyed myself running.
- 42:39Is that around this part of the world? Yeah, well it was getting
- 42:44in. It was in Hastings. I had no idea about all the events
- 42:47that were around at the time, and I literally just plunked in a map
- 42:52Hastings It's got a half marathon and yeah, and when I entered it,
- 42:54everyone said, well I should do that. It's really hilly, but hey,
- 42:59ho, that's that's where we were. Once you come off the sea
- 43:00front of Hastings. Man, it's hilly hill than fos and I think,
- 43:04yeah, so what was next after that? So after that, basically I
- 43:09went into a trainer shop to buy a pair of trainers Pod plus in Ashford
- 43:14at the Junior Row Stadium and went in with the sole intention of buying a
- 43:17pair of trainers. Came out with a membership to Ashford Club and the entry
- 43:22into a sprint trathlon. I didn't even have a bike, but it was
- 43:27one of those things. They sold it to me and I joined the club
- 43:30completely as a novice and I had three months to train for my first ever
- 43:36trifle. Okay, so where was that then? That was at East Grinstead.
- 43:39Yes, that was a pool swim and a bike and a run.
- 43:44So I did a bit of training with the club put it all together and
- 43:46I wasn't sure whether it was for me or not. And I didn't have
- 43:50a flash bike or anything like that. Had an old steel mountain bike and
- 43:53yeah, I turned up on the day and did the event and instantly fell
- 43:59in love with trathlon. Yeah, and they could have gone one way or
- 44:02the other absolutely, Yeah, Yeah, that's why I didn't commit to buying
- 44:06a new bike. Yeah, you didn't have to take your trainers back either,
- 44:10No, exactly. Okay, so tell me a little bit. We've
- 44:15had triathletes in here before, but it always amazes me that there are different
- 44:20distances, different styles of triathlon, right up to the iron Man. So
- 44:27what sort of triathlon did you do at East Grinstead? So? East Grinstead
- 44:30was a sprint triathlon, which was a five at a time, a five
- 44:35hundred meter swim, a twenty one k bike ride and then a five k
- 44:38run. There are other distances and you progress from there. High Bay,
- 44:45which we talk about later, is a super sprint, so slightly shorter,
- 44:49but your sprint is your entry level triathlon. From there you can go to
- 44:52what's called a standard, which is a twelve hundred meters swim, forty k
- 44:58bike and a ten run, and then you go to half distance. I
- 45:04found out that's seventy point three, isn't it? Is it? The half
- 45:06distance sometimes half fire Man, that's right. Yeah, obviously iron Man is
- 45:12a branded name, but there are other events. So that's where the seventy
- 45:15thirty came from of a half distance, so yeah, and then there's the
- 45:20full distance or the iron distance, which is, yeah, a two point
- 45:23four mile swim followed by And do you find that members of your club really
- 45:29go that they're all doing triathlons, they all go for different different distances.
- 45:32Absolutely. Yeah, I mean over the years when the club you members join
- 45:37and they probably focus on the shorter distances and then a couple of years later
- 45:42they progress to the next one or go to full distance. Some don't.
- 45:47Some just pick a distance and stay at that distance and go from there.
- 45:52So yeah, yeah, it's a bit like running actually. I mean I
- 45:57did three marathons in my time, but I'm not a marathon runner and at
- 46:01the end of the day, I just used to like doing the ten ks.
- 46:06If ever I went from a ten k to a ten mile, it
- 46:08was like a huge, huge jump, so I was quite happy doing ten
- 46:13k. So we're going to have a little chat shortly about the Hyde Bay
- 46:20Triathlon. But your club is it? Is he grown in the recent years?
- 46:23Is the time you've been there? Yes, So let's just clarify its
- 46:27the Ashrad Tri Club AZRA Tri Club. Yeah. So yeah, based obviously
- 46:31in Ashford, but we have a lot of members in Shepwey in Dover,
- 46:36as well and from the surrounding towns and villages. We have a very friendly
- 46:38rivalry with Deal tri Club you're probably fully aware of. And yeah, so
- 46:45it started. It was fifteen years ago and I joined the club when it
- 46:51was about four or five years old. And at that time, Traathilon was
- 46:54very fashionable. I think, yeah, if we want of a better words,
- 47:00a lot of people in the club, lots of people. I mean
- 47:01over time, you know, people go separate ways come back, and we've
- 47:06had a resurgence in the last three or four years. And yeah, we've
- 47:10got we've got currently about one hundred members within the club. And I mean
- 47:17if you want to train for a triathlon, I mean the Hide Bay is
- 47:23in a swimming pool. Some of the bigger distances are like open water where
- 47:28would you go to train and open water swim, So open water training.
- 47:30We sometimes train down at hythe in the sea itself, but that's more for
- 47:37the experienced swimmers. What we find is we offer pool based swim training every
- 47:43week and as the tri season starts, which is about now, we then
- 47:49go open water. So we go down to lid water sports, at water
- 47:52sports. Yeah, you've seen them down there and I've heard. I've heard
- 47:58stories actually of the water and the quality of the water in some of the
- 48:04races can be a little bit if you can't I remember somebody telling me that
- 48:08they did. I think it was up at Leed's Castle and it was very
- 48:12It was a moat and it was very shallow and they couldn't really get swim
- 48:15in and the quality was like a seaweed or weeding it. And so that's
- 48:22a little hazard. I suppose if you go abroad, I've got a bit
- 48:24more space and a bit yeah, yeah, yeah, it's fun to always
- 48:29watch out for and obviously members of the club you go to various different venues
- 48:34and bits and police pieces and there's quite a famous half distance event called Outlaw
- 48:39Hulmbe which is in Hulcombe up in Norfolk. I've done it once and after
- 48:45a swim swore I would never ever swim in that lake again. Lots of
- 48:49ducks and you know what ducks making. So yeah, the only race where
- 48:54I've got out of the water and they've actually said you have to drink water,
- 49:00just wash them out that after you've come out of the water. Yeah,
- 49:02well, we won't go any further than no, no, no,
- 49:05Okay, we're going to take a little break now and then we're going to
- 49:07come back and talk about the Hive bea Triflon, So let's have a little
- 49:10listen to ten CEC Life is a ministronie from nineteen seventy five. There tenn
- 49:39CEC Life is a ministrone Okay, we're back in the studio now with Max
- 49:45and we're going to chat about this Hive Bay Triathlon. So I don't know
- 49:50where to start, Max, So we know there's a triflon, tell us
- 49:54the headquarters if you like, where is it going to be based from?
- 49:57Okay, yeah, so it's based Hide Swimming Pool, so that's where you
- 50:01start. And if you know, Hide Swimming Pool is an area out the
- 50:06back which will become what we call Transition. That's where all the entrants will
- 50:10start and register. On the morning of the event. They will then be
- 50:16allowed into Transition, which is a secure area where they rack their bike and
- 50:21get themselves ready for the swim and set their running kit up and everything like
- 50:23that. Then we will set them off in order, so is the fastest
- 50:32and it's all timed so we'll have everyone going in every thirty seconds. So
- 50:36do they stand by the pool. Do they start in the pool? Do
- 50:37they start in a transition? And the enough to get into the pool from
- 50:40the transition, they will be ushered to the pool side. They will be
- 50:44given a final race brief and a safety briefing because we've all done properly with
- 50:49adjudications and marshals, and then the first swimmer will be asked to get into
- 50:54the water and the countdown will start when push off off you go. I
- 50:59see in the water already before they Yeah, thirty seconds later, the next
- 51:02person gets in, and the next person gets in and it all goes from
- 51:07there. Now I picked up I've been looking studying this website and things.
- 51:14A zigzag swim. Yes, explain what that is? Okay, So it's
- 51:19really simple. You have a rectangular pool which is split into five lanes as
- 51:23you would see in a normal swimming pool. But you would start in the
- 51:28bottom corner and that's where the first swimmer goes. And in the first lane,
- 51:30they swim up and then they swim back down, and then they go
- 51:35under the lane rope and swim up again and back down, and they do
- 51:39that across the five lanes, and that when they get to the corner at
- 51:45the other end, they will have done their two hundred and fifty meters and
- 51:47they exit out of the pool. At that point they are officially in what
- 51:52we call T one and so they've exited the pool and they will make their
- 51:58way out of the pool venue into the transition area in the swimming costume,
- 52:05and then they will prepare themselves to get onto the bike. They obviously have
- 52:09to not necessarily drive themselves. Some do some down some because it's all timed,
- 52:15even the transition piece. So get their bicycle kit on, helmet,
- 52:21safety gear off, they go out of transition and then that's when the timer
- 52:25starts for the bike. Right, So the bike now the bike ride.
- 52:31Just tell me a little bit about the bike ride where they go. Okay,
- 52:35so it's fifteen k which starts at hythe and you come out and go
- 52:43along the seafront on the main road up into Sandgate. You go almost into
- 52:49Folkeston and you turn around at the roundabout which is not too far from where
- 52:53Folkston Park run is. So I can't remember naming the road or somewhere,
- 53:00turn around and then you come back down a long sandgate. But then you
- 53:06cut off the garage onto the promenade and come all the way down back to
- 53:12the swimming pool, and then you enter transition from the other side and dismount
- 53:17your bike at the correct point. Then walk your bike back into transition,
- 53:22take your helmet off, take a cycling kit off, put your running kit
- 53:24on. That's when the timer starts for because you're in T two at that
- 53:29point, and then your run starts and you go from there. So okay,
- 53:32so the next step is the run. So how long and where'd you
- 53:35go? So the run is an out and back. It's five k it's
- 53:38from the steps by the Cafe of Cafe on the Beach which is behind there,
- 53:44and you run almost back towards d C Brook petrol station. Yes,
- 53:49it's just past there. There's a turnaround point and then you run all the
- 53:52way back, just past the Imperial Hotel to the promenade and we have a
- 53:57finish area there as you go through. Right. So that's that's the course
- 54:01for every single runner, every single triathlete. But you're going to get a
- 54:07point. I don't know if it happens in a swimming pool. Could you
- 54:08make up thirty seconds when you're sort of zigzagging the fast ones? You can
- 54:15because get two fast ones. Yeah. Yeah, because of the way we
- 54:21start all the swimmers. If the swimmer has been truthful with their predicted time,
- 54:24then it means that everyone should write. There's less chance to make up
- 54:30time in the pool because it is a shorter event, there's more chance to
- 54:35make up time on the run or on the bike. So obviously some tri
- 54:39athletes they got stronger discipline than others they. I mean, we've had tom
- 54:49Bean in here. Tom Bean is a gb triathlete and he did the London
- 54:54Sunday I don't know two thirty six. I think it did, but sorry
- 55:00digressing there. If you're training for a sprint tri e flon, is this
- 55:07the ideal one to get into, Yeah, I start with to start with,
- 55:13I would say so Highe Bay Try itself. This is the fifth event
- 55:19over eight years that we've hosted and done and obviously had to stop for covid
- 55:22etctera. The whole point of the High Bay Try was an inclusive, friendly
- 55:29beginner's event. So it's a super sprint distance, so a little bit shorter
- 55:32than what I was talking about earlier in terms of a sprint distance. It's
- 55:36solely aimed at those people who want to try or try have a go.
- 55:39You know, it's it's the safety of the pool, it's a very short
- 55:44bike, it's a very short run, and it's it's open for everyone.
- 55:46So because it's quite doable really, isn't it. You you adapt yourself creptly
- 55:52and yeah yeah yeah. And then the other good thing about this event as
- 55:54well, whilst it's it's it's all beginners, we get seasons seasoned triathletes who
- 56:00will come along and enter as a little test before the season, so just
- 56:06to make sure that their their training is on track. So yeah, and
- 56:10do you get a split of male and female? Is it a mixture?
- 56:15Yes, I would say it's predominantly female. That was that was one of
- 56:22the goals that we wanted to achieve when we originally set it up, and
- 56:25it was the chairperson at the time, Julie Abbott. It was her I
- 56:31think she came on the show. Yes, yes, yeah, that and
- 56:37it has has grown from there, so right, so going beyond scenes now,
- 56:43is there an association that you know that is a governing body it looks
- 56:47after this race BT which is a British Triathlon foundation. So yeah, they
- 56:52adjudicate and keep your eye on every event. So we have official umpires come
- 56:58and we have to follow all the rules and procedures and everything like that.
- 57:01So I'll give you an example which for new people, they're always a bit
- 57:07like really why you know. They'll turn up with a bike in any any
- 57:10condition and the first thing want of the masters is to make sure that the
- 57:14handlebars are covered on the no holes and everyone says, well why do any
- 57:20thing is to be covered? And it's for safety because if there's an accident
- 57:22it could cut them and bits and pieces like that. They must have a
- 57:25helmet, you must have the correct stuff, everything like that, and and
- 57:30if the adjudicator says you haven't got that stuff, yeah, yeah, well
- 57:34they should know that the time they get their suppose if the thing is on
- 57:37the day, you get a lot of nerves and bits and pieces like that.
- 57:40So whilst well we're there, we're there to help you as well.
- 57:43So if you haven't got your bits wandering, we can make it work.
- 57:45We can help them and cover the Okay, so we've we've covered the official
- 57:51side of things, but obviously you've got people marshallying now on the course.
- 57:57Where do they come from? So they are all members of the tri club,
- 58:00So it's our event. We put it on, We we do the
- 58:05whole shebang. That makes sense. So yeah, so we're always got all
- 58:12our volunteers, we're super friendly, you know the first I think every year
- 58:16we've done that, the feedback has been that you've got great marshals, great
- 58:21support it. It's a bit of a party for us. Yeah. So
- 58:24really, I mean, I'm sure they understand, but no ash for try
- 58:28people take place, do they? No? So we it's it's our event
- 58:34to put on. It's our event, not our event to participate in.
- 58:37Every now and again we do. You know, we might raffle off a
- 58:40spot to one member World card t Yeah, exactly so, but no majority
- 58:50of well all of the club members, of the volunteers. Yeah, so
- 58:52what time does the first person? They normally quite earlier, and they was
- 58:55really early. I believe it's a seven o'clock starts. Yeah, which means
- 59:01it's a it's an early start because that's when at seven o'clock you've got to
- 59:06be in the pool ready to go. And where'd you find Do you get
- 59:09people from outside the county come around? Yes, I mean it's it's grown
- 59:15and grown. So we've had TRY clubs from other counties, Essex, Surrey,
- 59:22they've come down. You know, it is mainly a local event and
- 59:28I mentioned deal Try already. They use it as one of their little championship
- 59:30events, so you know, because for them, they they put on lots
- 59:35of events, but they don't get an event where they get to yes,
- 59:39okay, so so yeah that's the other thing. What's your role on the
- 59:45day. So on the day I've mentioned transition and I will be the transition
- 59:51captain, So I will be in the transition making sure that everyone's in the
- 59:55right place, racking their bike, making sure that the adjudicate is happy,
- 1:00:00because each area has to be controlled. So we have a transition captain,
- 1:00:05we have a swim captain, we'll have a bike captain, a one a
- 1:00:08judy cator. For the size of our event, yes, just one.
- 1:00:13So the bigger the event, more duty, yes, yeah, yeah,
- 1:00:16so we are a smallish event. From that point of view, you get
- 1:00:20to the really big events where you're in the hundreds or of thousands a lot
- 1:00:24because I mean there with the experience of the club and that it must be
- 1:00:28I mean there's always something goes wrong, but you must know exactly what to
- 1:00:30do, you know, a meeting the week before, but there's always something
- 1:00:34goes wrong on the day and that's it. And I think, you know,
- 1:00:37five events in we're relatively well experienced that in dealing with whatever happens,
- 1:00:44you know. I give you an example last year, I suppose the biggest
- 1:00:46wild card was we'd check the route the night before, everything was fine,
- 1:00:52and on the morning we've got a phone call to say, actually part of
- 1:00:55the route is unavailable and okay, so we had to quickly go and do
- 1:01:01a risk assessment and we still managed to put the event on. So yeah,
- 1:01:06you just can't tell, can you. I mean, for example,
- 1:01:08with the folks in ten ten mile race, there was a high tide and
- 1:01:13an alder shingle got thrown over along the path on the promenade there, so
- 1:01:16there was a message put out, turn up with your broom and it worked,
- 1:01:21you know. They they swept it all the way and the race went
- 1:01:22ahead. LYDD did a run down there the runnersel off really windy day,
- 1:01:29a tree come down right across the court, honestly, and the people was
- 1:01:32clambering over. Nearly nearly canceled the race, so off they went. Luckily
- 1:01:37it was twenty miler and where the tree fell down. The guy in the
- 1:01:40house he had a chainsaw and he got rid of it. It just they
- 1:01:44all mucked in and got rid of it, and the runners were coming back.
- 1:01:45Where's the tree gone? Just so you just do not know what happens
- 1:01:49on the day, right, Okay, well we're going to wrap it up
- 1:01:52very shortly. But now I had a little little look and a little birdie
- 1:01:59told me that you've got a very sporty cousin. Is that right? I
- 1:02:02do, indeed, yes, And I did a little bit of Wikipedia and
- 1:02:06tell us a little bit about is it Tom, isn't it? Yes,
- 1:02:08my cousin Tom. He's nine years my junior, And yeah, he is
- 1:02:15or was a professional sportsman. He was a rower for Team GB and he
- 1:02:22got bronze in twenty twelve and he was a gold medalist for the men's eight
- 1:02:27in twenty sixteen. Right, So it's a bit of inspiration in the family
- 1:02:30there, it was. Yeah, yeah, But ultimately he's still my little
- 1:02:36cousin. Remember you tell him what to do? Yeah, and then his
- 1:02:39place. Yeah, absolutely good. It's nice. I were running a sporty
- 1:02:44contact that's really gone to the top, had been professional fantastic. Okay,
- 1:02:47now before we go, is there anything else you want to add? Max,
- 1:02:52We've I think we've covered most things about the day, so it just
- 1:02:57really leaves us to let everybody, you know, how they can get Okay.
- 1:03:01So yeah, we've still got entries available, We've still got spaces available,
- 1:03:05and we'd love for you to come along. You can enter via our
- 1:03:08website ww dot Ashford try club dot com or for our Facebook page. We've
- 1:03:15got a public Facebook page which is ash for tri Club and you can enter
- 1:03:19from there. So tell us when when is it again? It's Sunday for
- 1:03:22twelfth of May, so just under three weeks time, right, so not
- 1:03:27long, not long? Yeah, exactly the last thing then, Max,
- 1:03:31I know it's a big one, but I always ask people this, is
- 1:03:35there any any thank yous you want to say? Yeah, I have got
- 1:03:37a few. Thank you just I suppose first and foremost to Shaper Council and
- 1:03:44Hive Swimming Pool. You know, without the pool we can't, but also
- 1:03:51Shapwick Council in terms of allowing us to do it, in terms of the
- 1:03:53permits, bits and pieces like that. So so that's good. I've got
- 1:03:58to thank the all organizers in the club. So that's Claire Brooker, Jim
- 1:04:01Hawkins who are respectfully of a chair lady and the events director, our club
- 1:04:09sponsor Podplus and Jenna Construction who they always feel they help us out in terms
- 1:04:15of a sponsorship, but they also field their own team normally of about fifty
- 1:04:19people. Yeah, so that's great. Yeah yeah, So whilst it's all
- 1:04:24beginners as well, you get a contingent fantastic yeah yeah. So and finally,
- 1:04:30basically I've got to thank all the club members themselves because that's part and
- 1:04:33past love it is volunteer. So thank you Max. It's been absolutely really
- 1:04:39interesting talks you and finding out that there is a triathlon on our doorstep.
- 1:04:44That's the main thing is in the Folkstone and High region and you do get
- 1:04:46people coming in and they might make a weekend of it, and they might
- 1:04:49have some of them that come in for a long way obviously stay the night
- 1:04:54and can have a look around the harbor arm and places like that. So
- 1:04:58I just want to say good luck for the day on the twelfth May.
- 1:05:00Thank you very much, Kevin. Thank you. Some people call me the
- 1:05:04space Cover, some call me the Gangster Love. You're the curds thing.
- 1:05:17I have a dzy as the joker there, Steve miller band Okay, now,
- 1:05:25so I know we've done a little bit of overload with the running.
- 1:05:29That was nice to hear Max talking about the hive Be Triathlon. But the
- 1:05:34last week's guest that was Autumn Richardson and she couldn't make it today. So
- 1:05:39she sent me in this little report and it's going to read it out because
- 1:05:42it's in her own words. Now she said, this is what she said.
- 1:05:45She had the most incredible day Sunday running the London Marathon raising money for
- 1:05:50the MS Society. So far she's raised one seven hundred and thirty pounds,
- 1:05:57which you really can't believe that she did it, and she's so grateful for
- 1:06:00everyone's donations because what she did. You see, she only set herself a
- 1:06:03target of a thousand, so that's ah, that's amazing. It was a
- 1:06:06very tough day both mentally and physically, especially miles sixteen to nineteen. The
- 1:06:13last two miles I found I was needing to get my head into it and
- 1:06:15tell myself I can really finish. Post race day, I was quite achy,
- 1:06:21but stupidly I would definitely do London Marathon all over again next year if
- 1:06:26I had the chance. It was such an amazing, unforgettable experience, and
- 1:06:30the atmosphere was something else. Autumn finished the run in five hours, forty
- 1:06:34seven minutes forty five seconds. She had a wonderful day, raised oney seven
- 1:06:39hundred and thirty pounds. Now that's an incredible time for a runner who owns
- 1:06:43up to not being very fast. But what she did, she put all
- 1:06:45the effort in and all the training and it paid off. Now my London
- 1:06:50Marathon day, well, the day had finally arrived for London Marathon. I
- 1:06:55joined the folks and running an athletics club coach for a six am departure.
- 1:06:59It was a good drive up to Blackheath as the runners and spectators said their
- 1:07:01farewells and headed off to their various locations. Now you may have trained all
- 1:07:06winter with a colleague, but you may not be in the same zone as
- 1:07:11the Star. As we said earlier, there's a green, red, yellow,
- 1:07:14and blue zone, and there's every chance that you might be in two
- 1:07:17different zones and you won't see Hm until he finished. Anyway, our gang
- 1:07:21of spectators headed through Greenwich Park down to a grab front row at the railings
- 1:07:27opposite the Cutty Sark. Otherwise, well, we've had worse. But it
- 1:07:30was a chilly, bright and sunny with the fresh breeze, perfect for runners
- 1:07:34after training in all winter in cold, wet and windy days. And don't
- 1:07:40forget they used to have the dark evenings as well. That didn't help.
- 1:07:43Now. The ladies that were with they took it in turns to pop around
- 1:07:45the corner for a breakfast takeaway and a cuppa, not wanting to leave the
- 1:07:48railings for too long. As the place filled up and if people saw a
- 1:07:53gap, they were in there. The telltale sign of activity was when the
- 1:07:57noise level went up from the other side of the Cutty Sark. You knew
- 1:08:00someone was on the way. The wheelchairs came by, the elite, well
- 1:08:03they seem to float by, they do. The ladies came by, and
- 1:08:06then the masses. The Cutty Sark is around six miles ten k from the
- 1:08:11start, so the runners are fresh and buzzing. Now, spotting runners can
- 1:08:15be an art. You can blink and you can miss them. Now,
- 1:08:17I decided not to take photos of the runners for this very reason, and
- 1:08:21I'm pleased to say I spotted with the help of others. Of course,
- 1:08:25nearly every runner that was on our coach. I was specially pleased to have
- 1:08:29seen and high five all my guests from last week's show. Louisa Reid came
- 1:08:33round first, and then I think Henry Cornbill and Elie Stewart saw me before
- 1:08:38I saw them, and I grabbed a hug with Ellis. Then Autumn Richardson
- 1:08:42came round and actually came back to give me a hug. It was that
- 1:08:45kind of a day. Next step was to go under the Thames via the
- 1:08:48Greenwich Tunnel to pop up at the seventeen mile point. This is where the
- 1:08:53runners really needed a cheer as the tiredness to started to creep in. We
- 1:08:57were lucky we saw many of our colleagues, but the quicker ones by this
- 1:09:00time had passed through. We then took the Dockman's Light railway and the underground
- 1:09:03to a light at the embankment. After watching the snake light shape of athletes
- 1:09:08making their way through a bright and sunny Canary Wolf the embankment was jam pack
- 1:09:13solid and unless you're on the front row of the crowd, it was nearly
- 1:09:15possible to see your friends, and there is no way you can get to
- 1:09:18the finish line as this is by invitation only. As the runners limped and
- 1:09:24hobbled back to the pub in by the Haymarket, from where the coach departed,
- 1:09:28it was then time to hug, congratulate and swap stories of the day.
- 1:09:31I managed to log all of the times of the runners on our coach
- 1:09:34and congratulate them all as we headed home. The biggest share of the day
- 1:09:39on the way home went to Clive Allen and his wife Pam, who between
- 1:09:43them organized the coach, the itinery and of course a couple of celebratory drinks
- 1:09:47to toast the day. Now it's all I special day for season and first
- 1:09:51time runners, and the fast times reflected this. I'm sure there were some
- 1:09:56were saying that's it, never again, But by the time muddy around they
- 1:10:00were entering the ballot. Now I've made I've got to do this before we
- 1:10:04run out of time. A roll of honor and this is in no particular
- 1:10:09order of local runners from the folks in the Hive region that competed the London
- 1:10:14Marathon. So without further ado, we go straight into it. So big,
- 1:10:17well done. So now the first few I've just it really was a
- 1:10:19coincidence. They've a lot of them have got pbs, so well done to

- 1:12:47to add to that list, and I apologize if I left you out,
- 1:12:50but it's time for a little I'm gonna put my feet up and play a
- 1:12:53bit of music so many times to again again that was the police there.
- 1:13:21I can't stand losing you. Now. I'm going to whip through the next
- 1:13:25the little session because as usual we've overrund that our guests are so interesting.
- 1:13:30So I'm going to crack on now with some football news folks and in Victor
- 1:13:32welcome Dullage Hamletsshire and Road on Saturday for their last home game of the season.
- 1:13:38It was a fresh Sunday afternoon and a good crowd of eight hundred and
- 1:13:41twenty seven turned up. I was on PA duty with Sam and I watched
- 1:13:45Dullage tearing Victor apart with their slick passing moves, keeping the ball on the
- 1:13:48ground, and before half an hour was gone in Victor with three kneel down
- 1:13:53being Victor pauled won back eight minutes before halftime thanks to Sado so Nogo.
- 1:13:58I thought the writing was on the wall for a six one pastin, but
- 1:14:00manager Andy Drury must have given them a right roasting in his team talk because
- 1:14:04in the second half they didn't let Dullis use the ball like they had didn't
- 1:14:08like they had done in the first half, and they pushed on to get
- 1:14:11two more goals, one from Eddie Also and the equalizer in the eighty fourth
- 1:14:15minute from Dave Smith and the game ended three all. So the last game
- 1:14:20of the season is on Saturday away to Bogner who are thirteenth in Victor on
- 1:14:25our sixteenth. So it was nothing to play for really, but as I
- 1:14:28said last week, it's a good chance to blood some youngsters. Turning our
- 1:14:31attentions to hive Town now. They had a super long season and have one
- 1:14:35game left. On Saturday, they lost two nil away conceding two late goals
- 1:14:41against Broadbridge Heath, score ending too nil. They're on Tuesday they welcomed Crave
- 1:14:45Valley to reach Fields and so let's hear from this report from their man at
- 1:14:50pitchside, Tom Ellerby High toal beat comfortably but gave a good showing against new
- 1:14:56league leaders Crave Valley PM, losing four nil at reach Fields. And Tuesday
- 1:15:00evening, on his home debut, manager Sammy Moore made four enforced changes from
- 1:15:03the two nil defeet to Broadbridge Heath as Kean Garlice, Aaron Barnes, Brad
- 1:15:09Schaefer and Liam Smith were replaced by the returning Lex Allen alongside young debutants Harry
- 1:15:14Lapage, Vinnie Perry and Oliver Bussy. The match started very evenly in the
- 1:15:17first ten minutes, with the two sides having an even share of the possession,
- 1:15:21but on fourteen minutes the inevitable became reality as High lost the ball in
- 1:15:26the cray hearth, allowing Adam Coombs to charge forward on the counter attack,
- 1:15:30eventually making his way into the box and stotting home for a tight angle past
- 1:15:33Lewis Briggs. They made it two Nils six minutes before halftime as Clement assier
- 1:15:39Do sent a looping cross from inside the box onto the head of Adam Coombs,
- 1:15:43who sent it in for his second before the break. The second half
- 1:15:45started rather unfortunately as a flurry of shots in the fourty eighth minute than the
- 1:15:49visitors were saved by Lewis Briggs before Adam Coombs eventually put the ball into the
- 1:15:55net despite it taking the flection off Briggs to secure his hat trick and make
- 1:15:58it three Nils to cray Valley Hyde managed to hold out for a while,
- 1:16:01but Craye made at four nil on seventy four minutes as Sunny Black won the
- 1:16:04ball on the edge of the box and gave it to Julian Alner who put
- 1:16:09the ball into the back of the net. On eighty one minutes hythe had
- 1:16:12their best and only big chance of the game as Oscar Ware played a long
- 1:16:15ball to Josh Whisson who headed the ball down into the hands as the goalkeeper
- 1:16:19Max Ovenden. The full time whistle blue to mark Hyde's eleventh straight defeat.
- 1:16:25Despite the score line, Hyde showed good spirit in the match, especially the
- 1:16:29four young debutants. The final match of the season will take place on Saturday
- 1:16:32as Hyde host Lancing at three pm at Reach Fields. So it's been a
- 1:16:36season of two halves for Hive. The first half winning games in the league,
- 1:16:41in the cups and a great run in the FA Trophy, but the
- 1:16:44second half they struggled and mustsettle for a mid table place. However, with
- 1:16:47a new manager in Sammy Moore and several promising youngsters in the squad, it
- 1:16:51looks quite optimistic for next season. And just to recap, Hawkins Town finished
- 1:16:57runners up in the Premier Division of the Kent County Football League behind champions Halls
- 1:17:00AFC. Hawkins have one game left which is scheduled for May the fourth,
- 1:17:04which is a way at tenterd in Town. But even if they win this
- 1:17:08game, they would be just one point behind Halls. So all in all,
- 1:17:12you know, good end of the season, finishing runners up second in
- 1:17:15the league. Okay, we're going to switch our attention now to a rowing
- 1:17:17I've got some rowing news now. Last weekend was an open weekend at the
- 1:17:23Folks and Rowing Club, and I've been chatting with Sally Watkins from the club
- 1:17:26and she sent me in this report. The weekend was very successful. We
- 1:17:30had eleven people try rowing for the first time on Saturday and ten on Sunday,
- 1:17:34and with people on a list for the next open day, I showed
- 1:17:39them how to row on an ergo. Now an ergo if you wonder what
- 1:17:42EOF's an ergo. It's like an indoor rowing machine. So they tried the
- 1:17:45ergo first and then they went out in a double skull. Most of them
- 1:17:49seemed very keen and we hope to see them training or on Sunday. We
- 1:17:54were very lucky to have a flat sea, although the northerly wind made it
- 1:17:58feel very cold. After a long few months with not being able to get
- 1:18:01a float, we've been fortunate in the last ten days. We have rowers
- 1:18:05traveling to Swanage this weekend to complete in a quad skull and a one skull
- 1:18:11in the offshore racing either four K or ten K. It will be the
- 1:18:15first time our row is competing in larger offshore boats. This type of rowan
- 1:18:19is expected to feature in the Olympics in four years time. The annual friendly
- 1:18:24regatta, the Viking Shield, due to be held at Herne Bay this Saturday,
- 1:18:28was unfortunately canceled due to several clubs traveling to Swanage. Our first regatta
- 1:18:32of the season is on eleventh and May at Shoreham and the Folks And Regatta
- 1:18:36date for your diary everybody is the Sunday, the thirtieth of June. So
- 1:18:41a big thank you to Sally Watkins there from the Folks And Rowing Club for
- 1:18:44that report. Now there's one other little report I've got here somewhere that I'm
- 1:18:48just going to read out quickly if I can find it, and it's about
- 1:18:53some local cup finals. Well they're not actually local, but they come from
- 1:18:57Dover, but they're all playing the cup finals at the Folks in New Victor
- 1:19:00Round And the one that caught my eye was the park In. It's the
- 1:19:03pub on the roundabout by Central Station. And though they've got a final against
- 1:19:08Samphire Cargo FC, park In comfortably won their league by thirteen points and Samfire
- 1:19:14Cargo came third, so it should be a really good game. Now these
- 1:19:17are all Dover Sunday League Football teams. Unfortunately there's no football on Sunday morning
- 1:19:23in Folkston, so if you want to go along and the game is on
- 1:19:26the third third Sorry, that game was the third game of the day and
- 1:19:32that one kicks off at seven forty five. The other games are Crown Stove
- 1:19:35versus boars Head that's a kickoff at two o'clock, Ball of Duty versus v
- 1:19:41as Well kickoff at five pm, and as we said, Sam Fire Cargo
- 1:19:45versus Parkin at seven forty five. Well that's it for me for a few
- 1:19:50weeks now. I'm going to be in sunny Cyprus for the next three weeks.
- 1:19:55But I've already some guests lined up for next week show Sunday Made.
- 1:19:58The twenty six sees the return of the Folks in Coastal ten K and I
- 1:20:00hope to be joined by two of the Nice Work event team Race organizers Rachel
- 1:20:05Wood and chief chip timer Kevan James, and they will be telling us what
- 1:20:10goes on behind the scenes at a road race, So get out there,
- 1:20:14watch your partake in a bit of sports somewhere. And finally, good luck
- 1:20:17to Adrian Rose Under fourteen boys in their National Cup final on Sunday. So
- 1:20:23I'm gonna have a great holiday and I'll catch up with you and next time,
- 1:20:26stay safe. Sh shoe
