- 0:03Speaker 1: Hi, gain everybody. I'm Dan Horde and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth Podcast. The future is us to see. Addition,
- 0:12Speaker 1: as I talked to Sports Illustrated senior writer Connor Orr
- 0:15Speaker 1: about his bold predictions that the Bengals will win the
- 0:19Speaker 1: Super Bowl this year with MVP quarterback Joe Burrow. Plus,
- 0:23Speaker 1: I'll talk to rookie receiver Charlie Jones about the origin
- 0:27Speaker 1: of his Chuck Sizzle nickname, and then I'll introduce you
- 0:31Speaker 1: to an unsung hero in turning the Bengals into Super
- 0:34Speaker 1: Bowl contenders, strengthen conditioning coach Joey Bose. The Bengals Booth
- 0:39Speaker 1: Podcast is brought to you by Alta Fiber, future proof

- 0:54Speaker 1: reminder that you can have the latest edition of this
- 0:57Speaker 1: podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet, or computer by
- 1:01Speaker 1: subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's the greatest thing
- 1:05Speaker 1: since the Apple TV local radio option. Apple TV became
- 1:12Speaker 1: the primary home of Major League Soccer this year. Every
- 1:15Speaker 1: MLS match will be streamed on the app for the
- 1:18Speaker 1: next decade, and Apple TV has added a feature that
- 1:21Speaker 1: I love for obvious reasons. You have the option to
- 1:25Speaker 1: listen to the local radio broadcast as you watch the match.
- 1:29Speaker 1: There's a little audio icon on the screen. You click that,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and then you choose whether you want the TV announcers
- 1:36Speaker 1: or the home team's radio announcers. So, for everybody who
- 1:40Speaker 1: has told me over the years that they would love
- 1:42Speaker 1: to listen to lap in me but just can't do
- 1:44Speaker 1: it because of the annoying delay, which I totally get,
- 1:48Speaker 1: here's hoping that Apple TV has pioneered a feature in
- 1:52Speaker 1: its coverage of soccer that will soon make its way
- 1:55Speaker 1: to the NFL. Now, let's get to my first guest.
- 2:00Speaker 1: This week, Connor Or from Sports Illustrated came out with
- 2:03Speaker 1: a list of one hundred bold predictions for the upcoming
- 2:07Speaker 1: NFL season. Four of the one hundred involved the Bengals,
- 2:10Speaker 1: including his pick of Cincinnati over San Francisco to win
- 2:16Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. Connor, you have come out with one
- 2:20Speaker 1: hundred bold predictions for the upcoming NFL season. Some are
- 2:23Speaker 1: tongue in cheek, most of them are pretty serious. Let's
- 2:26Speaker 1: start with number one, The Bengals will defeat the forty
- 2:30Speaker 1: nine ers in Super Bowl fifty eight. How did you
- 2:32Speaker 1: land on Cincinnati and San Francisco making it and then
- 2:36Speaker 1: Cincinnati winning the Lombardi So I.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Think these two teams' best best in body. This trend
- 2:43Speaker 2: that I've been seeing in not just football, but in
- 2:46Speaker 2: sports as a whole, and that is, if you're aligned
- 2:49Speaker 2: with organizationally, with your coaching staff, with your scouting staff,
- 2:52Speaker 2: with your training staff, with everything, you tend to have
- 2:56Speaker 2: a hidden depth or a hidden quality of talent that
- 2:59Speaker 2: is just better than other people. And I think Cincinnati
- 3:01Speaker 2: and San Francisco are two teams that to me are
- 3:05Speaker 2: sort of your ideal, ideally set up organizations, right, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 2: especially with the Bengals. You know everyone will make fun of, oh,
- 3:12Speaker 2: they only had X number of scouts a couple of
- 3:14Speaker 2: years ago, right, But with that creates an intimacy that
- 3:18Speaker 2: doesn't exist in other departments between your scouting staff and
- 3:21Speaker 2: your coaching staff. And I can confidently say that, let's
- 3:24Speaker 2: see they get hit with a big wave of injuries,
- 3:26Speaker 2: I think that they have better players that we don't
- 3:28Speaker 2: know about than other teams would have in similar situations,
- 3:32Speaker 2: if that makes sense. And forty nine ers similarly, right,
- 3:35Speaker 2: they blow you away with their depth and there you
- 3:38Speaker 2: know their caliber of player from one to fifty two,
- 3:41Speaker 2: And so I think through the rigors of a season
- 3:44Speaker 2: that ends up meaning a great deal.
- 3:47Speaker 1: What did you think of the Bengals' free agent moves
- 3:50Speaker 1: excuse me, specifically landing Orlando Brown junior and then their
- 3:54Speaker 1: draft class led by Miles Murphy.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I think it has you know, to me, it's funny
- 3:59Speaker 2: right where you know it takes time for an organization
- 4:04Speaker 2: to shake whatever you want to call it. You know
- 4:08Speaker 2: that automatic thought that people have that comes with it,
- 4:10Speaker 2: and you know people don't consider the fact that since
- 4:13Speaker 2: Zach Taylor's been there, I think they've been a top
- 4:15Speaker 2: five free agents spending team almost every season, and the
- 4:19Speaker 2: commitment with which they've stood behind Burrow and done moves
- 4:24Speaker 2: I think specifically to be like, we're here to make
- 4:26Speaker 2: your life easier. It's just different, you know, and you
- 4:29Speaker 2: know you see that that's how the good franchises are
- 4:32Speaker 2: doing it. And so I think any time that you
- 4:34Speaker 2: can use free agency to profess your faith in your quarterback,
- 4:39Speaker 2: I think that all rolls downhill. I mean That's why
- 4:41Speaker 2: I was so happy with what the Bears did this
- 4:43Speaker 2: offseason too, because I think they're starting that the process
- 4:46Speaker 2: from the ground up, right, and whereas Cincinnati has sort
- 4:49Speaker 2: of embodied that at least over the last few years.
- 4:52Speaker 1: We are chatting with Sports Illustrated senior writer Connor or
- 4:55Speaker 1: So prediction number one Bengals over forty nine ers in
- 4:58Speaker 1: the Super Bowl go right to prediction number one hundred
- 5:02Speaker 1: that Joe Burrow will win his first MVP Award. Now
- 5:06Speaker 1: in Vegas, the top three guys in terms of the
- 5:09Speaker 1: odds are Burrow, Mahomes, and Alan not necessarily in that order.
- 5:13Speaker 1: So this is not a wildly bold prediction, but I'm
- 5:17Speaker 1: intrigued by the sentence Joe Burrow will win his first
- 5:20Speaker 1: MVP Award, implying that there might be multiple MVPs in
- 5:24Speaker 1: his career. How boldly do you consider this prediction that
- 5:28Speaker 1: Joe Burrow is going to be this year's MVP.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I thought that was kind of one
- 5:32Speaker 2: of the easier ones. And you know, I guess as
- 5:35Speaker 2: somebody who does you know who has to do one
- 5:37Speaker 2: hundred predictions, right, you know, you don't want them to
- 5:39Speaker 2: all be chalky and It's easy to say that Patrick
- 5:41Speaker 2: Mahomes is going to win the MVP Award, But I
- 5:44Speaker 2: think that there's a couple of factors in there too,
- 5:47Speaker 2: where just like Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, there becomes
- 5:50Speaker 2: a fatigue with certain players who are so great over
- 5:53Speaker 2: certain periods of time, Whereas Burrow I think still has
- 5:56Speaker 2: that element for voters that if he has a big
- 5:59Speaker 2: season and they make it to the Super Bowl and
- 6:01Speaker 2: they win the Super Bowl. I think that's something that
- 6:04Speaker 2: you know, is easier for us to accept as sort
- 6:07Speaker 2: of the voting public. It's like, Okay, here's the new guy,
- 6:09Speaker 2: here's the next whatever whatever, and so yeah, I mean,
- 6:12Speaker 2: I think it'll be the first of many. I mean,
- 6:14Speaker 2: I've you know, I did the SI cover story on
- 6:17Speaker 2: him last year for the Football Preview issue, and I've
- 6:20Speaker 2: always said, like I mean, and other people backed this
- 6:23Speaker 2: up in the story, like he's the closest thing we
- 6:26Speaker 2: have to a sort of long term talent in the league,
- 6:31Speaker 2: Like somebody that will be able to play the game
- 6:33Speaker 2: the way that he is now when he's forty years old,
- 6:35Speaker 2: and if he wants to keep doing it that way,
- 6:37Speaker 2: you know, you can have a lot of success in
- 6:40Speaker 2: between there. He's functionally mobile, he's smart, he's committed determine
- 6:44Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. So I feel like this
- 6:46Speaker 2: could be the first of a handful.
- 6:48Speaker 1: For sure. You came to Cincinnati to do that cover
- 6:51Speaker 1: story last year. Joe doesn't do a ton of interviews,
- 6:54Speaker 1: one on one interviews other than the news conferences that
- 6:57Speaker 1: he has to do as an NFL quarterback. What were
- 6:59Speaker 1: some of your big takeaways from spending one on one
- 7:01Speaker 1: time with Joe?
- 7:04Speaker 2: Just how you know, and it's such a cliche, but
- 7:06Speaker 2: what you see is what you get kind of thing,
- 7:08Speaker 2: you know, and kind of how just you know, there
- 7:11Speaker 2: wasn't anything guarded, There wasn't anything dishonest. I mean, I
- 7:14Speaker 2: think with certain players, you can certainly tell that they're
- 7:16Speaker 2: trying to get something across to you. There's a message,
- 7:20Speaker 2: there's a point to why you're there or why you've
- 7:22Speaker 2: been invited there. With Joe, I mean, you know, his
- 7:25Speaker 2: day probably would have been a whole lot better if
- 7:26Speaker 2: we didn't have if he didn't have to do it
- 7:28Speaker 2: at all, you.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Know, But within that, I thought that there was a
- 7:31Speaker 3: lot of you know.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Mutual respect, you know, respectful of my time, which is
- 7:36Speaker 2: you know, I'm getting older. It's rare, you know. And
- 7:39Speaker 2: but and just this mutual consideration. I'm not someone that's
- 7:42Speaker 2: in there to ruin his day. We can have a
- 7:44Speaker 2: fun conversation and we can talk about things that really
- 7:47Speaker 2: matter to him in life, and you know, and and
- 7:49Speaker 2: he's going to be honest about it.
- 7:51Speaker 3: And you know, I just thought just.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Different, very very down to earth, very you know, the
- 7:56Speaker 2: kind of person that you could bump into and if
- 7:58Speaker 2: you didn't know he was Joe Burrow, just to have
- 7:59Speaker 2: a really nice you know, have a beer with him.
- 8:02Speaker 4: You know.
- 8:03Speaker 1: We're chatting with Connor Or from Sports Illustrated. You can
- 8:05Speaker 1: follow him on Twitter at connor Or. The cover story
- 8:09Speaker 1: on Burrow wasn't just about Burrow. There was plenty of
- 8:12Speaker 1: other Bengals stuff in there, including some great stuff about
- 8:15Speaker 1: Zach Taylor and his wife and how much they love
- 8:18Speaker 1: working and living in Cincinnati. There was a great anecdote
- 8:22Speaker 1: in there about Zach Taylor dropping the kids off at
- 8:25Speaker 1: school the morning after the AFC Championship went over Kansas City.
- 8:28Speaker 1: A couple of years, they get home at two in
- 8:30Speaker 1: the morning, He's up at six to take his kids
- 8:32Speaker 1: to school. Did it stand out to you how good
- 8:35Speaker 1: of a fit Zach Taylor is in Cincinnati and with
- 8:38Speaker 1: the Bengals organization.
- 8:40Speaker 3: You know, it's funny.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I mean, you know, some of my best friends live
- 8:43Speaker 2: in Cincinnati. There was a chance that I would have
- 8:46Speaker 2: worked in Cincinnati earlier in my career, and you know,
- 8:50Speaker 2: when you talk to people from there and you talk
- 8:53Speaker 2: to people who live there, it's just sort of that
- 8:56Speaker 2: expectation like this is how this community is, and it
- 8:59Speaker 2: just sort of brings you in, it sort of embraces
- 9:02Speaker 2: you as long as you love it back, you know
- 9:05Speaker 2: what I mean. If you know, it takes a certain
- 9:07Speaker 2: kind of person to love I think Cincinnati, but if
- 9:10Speaker 2: you do, it is you know, it's it's a it's
- 9:13Speaker 2: a heaven on Earth kind of place. And with Zach,
- 9:15Speaker 2: I mean, you know, it's funny to hear his wife
- 9:17Speaker 2: tell the story about like how we just knew that
- 9:19Speaker 2: this is where we always want it to be and
- 9:22Speaker 2: to be so definitive about that, and you know, I
- 9:24Speaker 2: think that's part of the reason why this has worked.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I think it's part of the reason that Mike Brown
- 9:28Speaker 2: was you know, patient with him, you know, and after
- 9:32Speaker 2: two of those first two seasons, you could see a
- 9:34Speaker 2: lot of guy owners moving on at that point, and
- 9:36Speaker 2: it's fostered this sort of really good relationship, and not
- 9:40Speaker 2: every coach has that where you're comfortable and you can
- 9:42Speaker 2: exist in a city like Zach Taylor can exist in Cincinnati.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Let's get back to your one hundred bold predictions. Prediction
- 9:50Speaker 1: number ninety three, Joe Burrow will do something cool with
- 9:54Speaker 1: his contract so that the Bengals can re sign all
- 9:57Speaker 1: of his wide receiver friends. Keeping Burrow, Chase, and Higgins
- 10:03Speaker 1: is probably going to cost about one hundred million dollars
- 10:05Speaker 1: a year going forward. It's a big chunk of the cap.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Do you think it's feasible?
- 10:11Speaker 2: I think anything is feasible within the salary cap. I'm
- 10:14Speaker 2: a believer in what a lot of agents have told me.
- 10:17Speaker 2: And granted this is agents right, and they want to
- 10:19Speaker 2: be paid the commission to sign the player to the contract,
- 10:22Speaker 2: but that the salary cap is ultimately sort of the
- 10:24Speaker 2: best excuse that any GM or owner has in modern times, right.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And there are teams who are willing to work around it,
- 10:31Speaker 2: work through it, spend the money now whatever you know,
- 10:34Speaker 2: however you want to structure, and there are teams that
- 10:36Speaker 2: are less willing to do it. But I mean, nothing
- 10:39Speaker 2: in the way that Cincinnati has acted over the last
- 10:41Speaker 2: three years led me to believe that they're trying to
- 10:44Speaker 2: save money here, you know, I mean, this is this
- 10:46Speaker 2: is an investment for sure.
- 10:49Speaker 1: What might something cool be?
- 10:52Speaker 3: You know, it's funny.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I mean, there are quarterbacks who come out and I'm
- 10:56Speaker 2: not saying he's gonna do what Tom Brady did, certainly not.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I mean, you know, the best quarterback, he's maybe one
- 11:01Speaker 2: of the two or three best quarterbacks in the NFL.
- 11:04Speaker 2: You know, I think you do have a responsibility to
- 11:06Speaker 2: your peers into the players Association to reset the market there.
- 11:09Speaker 2: But is there way that you can structure the contract,
- 11:14Speaker 2: whether it's front loaded, backloaded, whether some of the you know,
- 11:18Speaker 2: some of the guarantees fall in a certain kind of
- 11:19Speaker 2: way where you create little pockets.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Of available cash.
- 11:23Speaker 2: And I think that there is and it's just a
- 11:25Speaker 2: matter of you know, Joe, I think is unique because
- 11:28Speaker 2: here's a guy who is from Ohio, who is committed
- 11:32Speaker 2: to building this thing in Ohio. Nothing about anything that
- 11:36Speaker 2: anyone around him has ever said leads me to believe
- 11:38Speaker 2: that he wants to ever be anywhere else. And you know,
- 11:41Speaker 2: maybe your opinions or life can change in some in
- 11:44Speaker 2: some different way over the course of time. But if
- 11:46Speaker 2: you know you want to be somewhere for so long,
- 11:48Speaker 2: I think certainly you can get creative with the numbers.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I mean, Patrick Mahomes signed a ten year deal and
- 11:53Speaker 2: within that creates a lot of space for them to
- 11:55Speaker 2: do different things.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Bold prediction number ninety eight. Jamar Chase will win the
- 12:01Speaker 1: Offensive Player of the Year award. It's safe to say
- 12:05Speaker 1: you expect monster numbers from Jamar Chase this year.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I think that we're going to be in one of
- 12:11Speaker 2: those situations where defensively we're going to be in one
- 12:14Speaker 2: of these years where it's year three maybe where you
- 12:18Speaker 2: want to say it's sort of the Vic Fangio thing.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And within that, I think there's going to be a
- 12:23Speaker 2: lot of evolutions defensively, And with that, I think you're
- 12:26Speaker 2: going to see offenses start to struggle anew again. And
- 12:29Speaker 2: when whenever you see kind of an offensive breakthrough, there's
- 12:31Speaker 2: always a defensive counterbalance. And during those counterbalance years, you
- 12:35Speaker 2: always see that ingrained relationships between quarterbacks and wide receivers
- 12:39Speaker 2: end up doing really well. And these are guys who
- 12:41Speaker 2: know each other, These are guys who understand each other
- 12:43Speaker 2: really well, and I just think, you know that this
- 12:46Speaker 2: could be one of those years where they have the
- 12:48Speaker 2: ability to stand out.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Non Bengals Bold Predictions. Do you think DeAndre Hopkins winds
- 12:55Speaker 1: up in Cleveland?
- 12:56Speaker 2: It's the only place that makes sense to me. And
- 12:58Speaker 2: I know that you know he wants to play for
- 13:00Speaker 2: the Chiefs and the Bills. That's great. Yeah, I do too.
- 13:03Speaker 2: You know, I would love I would love to be
- 13:05Speaker 2: the head coach of the Chiefs.
- 13:06Speaker 3: And I'm not saying that they don't want him.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I'm sure there's some interest there, But I think Cleveland
- 13:11Speaker 2: probably has the most money, and I think Cleveland probably
- 13:13Speaker 2: has the most interest in having Deshaun Watson be successful
- 13:16Speaker 2: for myriad reasons, and so I think you should feel
- 13:21Speaker 2: that responsibility to do whatever you can to make sure
- 13:24Speaker 2: Deshaun Watson is comfortable. And I don't think Amari Cooper
- 13:26Speaker 2: and Donovan Peoples, Jones and Elijah Moore is really doing
- 13:29Speaker 2: it for me as a wide receiver corps and I
- 13:31Speaker 2: wonder if he feels the same way.
- 13:33Speaker 1: You did not stack the AFC North in your one
- 13:36Speaker 1: hundred Bold Predictions. But what do you think which of Baltimore, Pittsburgh,
- 13:40Speaker 1: and Cleveland is most likely to challenge Cincinnati for the crown.
- 13:45Speaker 2: This is so hard. I think Baltimore is gonna have
- 13:48Speaker 2: a really good seaton. I mean, this division is going
- 13:49Speaker 2: to be a gauntlet, and it could be one of
- 13:52Speaker 2: those I know it's a cop out when and I
- 13:54Speaker 2: said this about the AFC West last year, so buyer beware,
- 13:57Speaker 2: but you know, it could be one of those things
- 13:59Speaker 2: where the well in, the last place team in the
- 14:01Speaker 2: division has nine wins, you know, And you know, I
- 14:04Speaker 2: think that Baltimore, to me, is probably your second place
- 14:07Speaker 2: team that's not so far behind, presuming that Lamar Jackson's healthy,
- 14:12Speaker 2: and I think that that offense is going to look
- 14:14Speaker 2: a lot different and sort of really cool and with
- 14:17Speaker 2: with Munket in there. So but I like Pittsburgh a lot,
- 14:20Speaker 2: and I've talked to a lot of people who really
- 14:22Speaker 2: like Pittsburgh.
- 14:22Speaker 3: I think Kenny Pickett could break out my I.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Would say the dividing line there would be I like
- 14:27Speaker 2: Jackson a little bit more than I like Pickett, and
- 14:28Speaker 2: so I have it I have That's how I would
- 14:30Speaker 2: have it. I would have it Cincinnati, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cleveland.
- 14:34Speaker 1: All right, final thing for Connor Or from Sports Illustrated
- 14:37Speaker 1: Bold Prediction number ninety two, The love of your life
- 14:40Speaker 1: will announce plans for a divorce midway through the second
- 14:44Speaker 1: quarter of a Cardinals game. We happen to be doing
- 14:46Speaker 1: this interview on my wedding anniversary.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Is there something anniversary?
- 14:50Speaker 1: Thank you very much. Is there something that you know
- 14:53Speaker 1: that I should be worried about?
- 14:55Speaker 3: Are the Cardinals on the schedule, because you got.
- 14:57Speaker 1: To be Yeah, the Cardinals are on the Bengals schedule.
- 15:02Speaker 1: It's a road game. I maybe I should bring Peg
- 15:06Speaker 1: with me on that road trip, just make sure. Yeah.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I mean, I think this is a good reminder for
- 15:09Speaker 2: everyone out there to just take your significant other out
- 15:13Speaker 2: and make sure they know you love them.
- 15:15Speaker 3: But no, I would say that just in general.
- 15:18Speaker 2: I think if you take your significant other to a
- 15:20Speaker 2: lot of Cardinals games, that's a hard lot in life,
- 15:23Speaker 2: you know, so at some point you can.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Think of it.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Connor, I really enjoyed the one hundred Bold predictions. Obviously
- 15:30Speaker 1: the ones about the Bengals will please my audience, since
- 15:32Speaker 1: you are very high on Cincinnati and very high on
- 15:35Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, and hopefully we will cross paths Super Bowl Week,
- 15:39Speaker 1: when you are days away from seeing that prediction come true.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Looking forward to it, and thanks for having me.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Some of Connor's one hundred bold predictions are tongue in cheek,
- 15:48Speaker 1: including this one, number thirty four. A happily rowtunnd German Man,
- 15:55Speaker 1: initially dressed as Andy Reid, will streak across the football
- 15:58Speaker 1: field in Frankfurt's stadium wearing only a mustache. That sentence
- 16:04Speaker 1: made me laugh, although the mental image is profoundly disturbing.

- 16:45Speaker 1: That's what Purdue fans started calling wide receiver Charlie Jones.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Last year. I talked to Charlie about the origin of
- 16:51Speaker 1: the nickname and his chance encounter with a Bengals legend
- 16:55Speaker 1: over the weekend. Chad Johnson tweeted a picture of the
- 17:00Speaker 1: two of you over the weekend. How'd you meet?
- 17:04Speaker 6: He was staying at the hotel that the rookies are
- 17:06Speaker 6: staying at and so I just ran into him, said
- 17:08Speaker 6: what's up. Got to talk to him for a little bit,
- 17:10Speaker 6: So it was cool.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Are you old enough to really remember his Bengals career?
- 17:14Speaker 6: Oh yeah, Oh yeah. That was one of the guys
- 17:15Speaker 6: out that I've been, you know, watching as a kid.
- 17:19Speaker 6: So it was cool to It's cool to get to
- 17:20Speaker 6: meet him in person.
- 17:22Speaker 1: He seemed excited about the possibility of you being with
- 17:26Speaker 1: his former team.
- 17:27Speaker 6: Did he express that Yeah, definitely, definitely. Like I said,
- 17:30Speaker 6: I got talked for a little bit and he was
- 17:34Speaker 6: excited and I was excited. So it was cool, all right.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Explain the origin of Chuck Sizzle. Uh.
- 17:41Speaker 6: It started my first game last year at Purdue Gus Johnson.
- 17:48Speaker 6: We were playing Penn State and he just he just
- 17:50Speaker 6: started calling me out of nowhere, and it's stuck all year.
- 17:52Speaker 1: He loved saying it anytime he had a Purdue game.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:56Speaker 6: Yeah, he was over and over again. That was his thing.
- 17:58Speaker 1: So I see the gear. Do friends and family members
- 18:02Speaker 1: wear it? The shirt chuck Sizzel shirts and stuff like that.
- 18:06Speaker 6: Yeah, they got a good amount of shirts. Did they
- 18:08Speaker 6: wear it every once in a while?
- 18:10Speaker 1: Have guys here started calling you that?
- 18:13Speaker 6: Uh no, not really, No, not yet, not yet, not yet.
- 18:18Speaker 1: We're visiting the Charlie Jones. You've got the number fifteen,
- 18:21Speaker 1: that was your Purdue number. I think you were sixteen
- 18:24Speaker 1: at Iowa. Do you feel like there's good mojo there?
- 18:27Speaker 1: Were you happy to get it?
- 18:28Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 18:28Speaker 6: I was happy to get it. Stick with the number.
- 18:31Speaker 6: It grew on me last year, so I'm happy to
- 18:34Speaker 6: be in it again.
- 18:35Speaker 1: You reference that Perdue debut where Gus Johnson coined the
- 18:40Speaker 1: nickname twelve catches one hundred and fifty something yards against
- 18:43Speaker 1: Penn State. I believe how important was that game in
- 18:46Speaker 1: your first game at Purdue to kind of establish all right,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I'm here to do some damage.
- 18:51Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, you know, obviously it was a big
- 18:54Speaker 6: game to begin with, and then kind of, like you said,
- 18:58Speaker 6: just to prove that you know, I'm here, I'm a receiver.
- 19:02Speaker 6: I can do this in this league, and that's that's
- 19:04Speaker 6: really why I went to Purdue is to prove that.
- 19:06Speaker 6: So to come out and start off like that was
- 19:09Speaker 6: was was pretty cool.
- 19:11Speaker 1: So your Purdue quarterback in childhood buddy Aiden is with
- 19:14Speaker 1: the Raiders. Correct. You guys been in frequent contact during
- 19:18Speaker 1: the OTA.
- 19:19Speaker 6: Yeah, we're both busy, so we've called a couple of
- 19:21Speaker 6: each other a couple of times. But yeah, I'm very
- 19:26Speaker 6: happy for him. Worked really hard to get here and
- 19:29Speaker 6: he's in a good, good situation.
- 19:31Speaker 1: It's almost a year to the day since you transferred
- 19:34Speaker 1: from Iowa to Purdue, and it's obviously worked out incredibly well.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Do you reflect it all a year later about that
- 19:40Speaker 1: life changing decision.
- 19:43Speaker 6: Every once in a while, you know, I've been pretty busy,
- 19:46Speaker 6: so it's don't really get to think on it too much.
- 19:48Speaker 6: But but yeah, it's crazy that it was a difficult
- 19:52Speaker 6: decision for me in the time, and looking back on it,
- 19:55Speaker 6: you know, it's exactly why I made that decision to
- 19:57Speaker 6: be in the situation i'm at now's you know, I'm
- 19:59Speaker 6: just I'm just blessed to be in it.
- 20:01Speaker 1: So you've been with t and Jamar for a couple
- 20:04Speaker 1: of weeks. Tyler Boyd join the festivities today. Let's start
- 20:07Speaker 1: with the first two guys. Anything stand out from watching
- 20:10Speaker 1: them and studying their practice habits.
- 20:14Speaker 6: Yeah, definitely, just just getting to watch the way they
- 20:16Speaker 6: operate on a daily basis, whether I'm out, I'm on
- 20:21Speaker 6: the field with them, or we're in the meeting room.
- 20:23Speaker 6: I'm just just picking up little things, And that was
- 20:26Speaker 6: that was my goal for you know, the first couple
- 20:28Speaker 6: of weeks, just learn as much as I possibly can.
- 20:30Speaker 6: I feel like that's going to be the goal of
- 20:32Speaker 6: my whole careers. Every day I'm trying to learn, trying
- 20:36Speaker 6: to pick up new things and be in a room
- 20:37Speaker 6: with guys like this who who who've been pretty established
- 20:41Speaker 6: has been has been awesome for me.
- 20:43Speaker 1: And now the Tyler's here, that's a guy who plays
- 20:46Speaker 1: a spot that you're likely to see a lot of
- 20:47Speaker 1: snaps at. Will you really be focusing on the things
- 20:51Speaker 1: that have made him so successful?
- 20:53Speaker 6: Yeah, definitely, just just trying to be a sponge and
- 20:56Speaker 6: just trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can.
- 20:59Speaker 6: You know, see the way we worse for him, what
- 21:03Speaker 6: he does that I can do, that's gonna work for me.
- 21:07Speaker 6: So just really just being a student of the game
- 21:09Speaker 6: and and trying to take what they do and add
- 21:11Speaker 6: it to my toolbox.
- 21:13Speaker 1: So we're chatting like forty five minutes after practice ended
- 21:16Speaker 1: and you just walked into the locker room. Are you
- 21:18Speaker 1: grinding well after practice stops?
- 21:21Speaker 6: Yeah, definitely got a lot of things that need to
- 21:23Speaker 6: work on.
- 21:25Speaker 3: You know.
- 21:25Speaker 6: I feel like I'm in the position I am today
- 21:28Speaker 6: because of the hard work. So so that's not changing
- 21:31Speaker 6: at all.
- 21:32Speaker 1: What's Coach Walter's been like, it's.
- 21:34Speaker 6: Been awesome, just another guy to learn from, really really
- 21:38Speaker 6: breaks it down, makes it makes it simple for for
- 21:41Speaker 6: the new guys, and just really been helping us ever
- 21:44Speaker 6: since we we got drafted. He's been, you know, helping
- 21:47Speaker 6: us the whole time. So it's been awesome being a
- 21:50Speaker 6: room and he's someone that's done it, you know, which
- 21:54Speaker 6: is awesome. So he's got a lot of knowledge, and
- 21:56Speaker 6: same thing with with the other guys in the room.
- 21:58Speaker 6: Just been learning, taking new things.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Apprecia your time, appreciate it. If Charlie has early success
- 22:05Speaker 1: as a receiver and or return specialist, I suspect there
- 22:09Speaker 1: will be a bunch of Chuck Sizzle merchandise out there.

- 22:40Speaker 1: It's presented by you by Cotex in partnership with Kroger
- 22:44Speaker 1: and Title Babe Period Supply Bank. My final conversation this
- 22:49Speaker 1: week is with Bengal's strength and conditioning coach Joey Bose.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Joey has been in that role since Zach Taylor arrived
- 22:56Speaker 1: in twenty nineteen, and, like the Bengals head coach, Bose
- 23:01Speaker 1: was an outstanding college football player before getting into coaching.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Joe your story is really interesting to me because before
- 23:09Speaker 1: you got into strength and conditioning coaching, you had quite
- 23:12Speaker 1: a playing career. You run back to back rose ball
- 23:15Speaker 1: winning teams at Wisconsin. You spent four years in the
- 23:17Speaker 1: Canadian Football League. You were a CFL All Star. How
- 23:21Speaker 1: unusual are you among your peers in that sense.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Oh, I don't know if I'm unusual. I was lucky
- 23:29Speaker 4: when I was younger, you know, to go to the
- 23:31Speaker 4: University of Wisconsin, be around some great coaches and be
- 23:34Speaker 4: on some really good football teams. And then I was
- 23:37Speaker 4: one of those guys that wanted to play in the NFL.
- 23:39Speaker 4: And maybe it was a step slow or a little
- 23:42Speaker 4: bit too small to do that.
- 23:44Speaker 5: So I went up to the Canadian.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Football League and played up there for you know, four years,
- 23:49Speaker 4: And really, I think my experience as a player has helped.
- 23:52Speaker 5: Me in the field of work I'm in.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Now, were you in any NFL tryout camps? Did you
- 23:57Speaker 1: get a shot with anybody? You know?
- 23:59Speaker 4: I after my second year in the CFL, I mean
- 24:02Speaker 4: the All Star team up there, and I had a
- 24:04Speaker 4: couple you know, late now looking back at it, late December,
- 24:08Speaker 4: early January workouts with teams, But no, I was never
- 24:13Speaker 4: on an NFL roster.
- 24:15Speaker 1: You played with Ron Daine when he won the Heisman Trophy.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Who are some of the best guys you played with
- 24:20Speaker 1: and against?
- 24:21Speaker 5: Oh?
- 24:21Speaker 1: Wow?
- 24:23Speaker 4: With you know, Ron Daine was a great player. Chris
- 24:27Speaker 4: Chambers was a wide receiver. He went in the second round.
- 24:29Speaker 4: He was a really good pro for Miami. Jamar Fletcher
- 24:33Speaker 4: was a year older than me, played corner. He won
- 24:36Speaker 4: the Jim Thorpe his junior year.
- 24:38Speaker 5: He was a first round draft pick. Those are a
- 24:40Speaker 5: couple of skill guys that were really good.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Michael Bennett, the running back for Minnesota, played with Michael
- 24:45Speaker 4: for a year against you know, I was obviously Tom
- 24:48Speaker 4: Brady was probably the best player.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Looking back at it, it was his I guess it
- 24:54Speaker 5: was his senior year.
- 24:55Speaker 4: He was split in time with a guy named Drew Henson,
- 24:57Speaker 4: and Drew Brees played against.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Him a couple of times.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Is it Purdue?
- 25:01Speaker 5: So I was in.
- 25:02Speaker 4: That old you know, late nineties, Big ten, early two thousands.
- 25:06Speaker 5: There's some good players that back then.
- 25:09Speaker 1: I know you had seven picks in college. I think
- 25:12Speaker 1: maybe that was the CFL. It's not seven picks somewhere.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I'll take it.
- 25:15Speaker 4: That might be a little generous generous, but I'll take seven.
- 25:19Speaker 5: Sure. That sounds good to me.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Did you get anybody good like Brady? Anybody stand up?
- 25:25Speaker 1: You know?
- 25:25Speaker 5: I don't think so.
- 25:26Speaker 4: I had a scoop and score against Indiana, but I
- 25:29Speaker 4: think we're getting beat pretty bad that game.
- 25:31Speaker 5: So I don't.
- 25:32Speaker 4: Antoine Randall L maybe was a quarterback, but I don't
- 25:36Speaker 4: know if I got any.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Of those good guys.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Antoine Randall L gave the Bengals fits when he was
- 25:40Speaker 1: a Pittsburgh Steeler. But in any case, there visiting with
- 25:43Speaker 1: Joey Bose. You're from southern California. How did you wind
- 25:45Speaker 1: up in Madison, Wisconsin?
- 25:47Speaker 4: You know, I went to I was real lucky growing up.
- 25:50Speaker 4: I went to Modern Day High School, which had a
- 25:53Speaker 4: tremendous still does, tremendous football program, great sports growing up
- 25:57Speaker 4: in Orange County.
- 25:58Speaker 5: There.
- 25:59Speaker 4: I went to mad and got recruited by a couple
- 26:02Speaker 4: of schools coming out, and after my junior year, Wisconsin
- 26:06Speaker 4: offered me a scholarship and we took a summer trip
- 26:09Speaker 4: going into my senior year there and really fell in
- 26:11Speaker 4: love with the campus and the coaching staff and committed.
- 26:15Speaker 4: I guess midway maybe November through my senior year, and
- 26:19Speaker 4: I would do it all over again. I was very
- 26:21Speaker 4: lucky to pick the University of Wisconsin. Anything stand out
- 26:25Speaker 4: about those two Rose Bowl wins? You know, I was
- 26:27Speaker 4: a young guy, was a true freshman my first year,
- 26:29Speaker 4: so going back to California was big because when I
- 26:31Speaker 4: committed to Wisconsin, I had a lot of buddies and
- 26:35Speaker 4: friends around the neighborhood, you know, saying.
- 26:37Speaker 1: What are you doing?
- 26:39Speaker 5: Why would you go to Wisconsin.
- 26:40Speaker 4: So I think our first year going back, we played Juicecla.
- 26:43Speaker 4: That was gratifying, you know, to pick a school, and
- 26:46Speaker 4: then I was a special teams kind of dying player.
- 26:49Speaker 4: Then my second year, I was the nickel and we
- 26:52Speaker 4: actually played Troy Walters Stanford in the Rose Bowl and
- 26:55Speaker 4: Troy was Blittan the cough winner.
- 26:57Speaker 5: He was the big receiver. We had to stop that game.
- 27:00Speaker 4: But I was very fortunate to be around some good players,
- 27:03Speaker 4: some good coaches, and we were those first two years
- 27:05Speaker 4: pretty good at Wisconsin.
- 27:07Speaker 1: So I mentioned you went to the Canadian Football League.
- 27:09Speaker 1: You were a Calgary Stampeder. Did you enjoy the CFL?
- 27:13Speaker 1: I did.
- 27:15Speaker 4: It was fresh out of college. I probably wasn't ready
- 27:19Speaker 4: for the working world at that time, and so football
- 27:23Speaker 4: in sports was kind of all I knew, and I
- 27:26Speaker 4: was lucky I got on Calgary Stampede's.
- 27:27Speaker 5: I played up there for four years. I had a
- 27:29Speaker 5: good time.
- 27:30Speaker 4: It's a little bit different structure than the National Football League.
- 27:33Speaker 4: I don't know what it's like now, but back then there.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Wasn't an off season.
- 27:36Speaker 4: It was showed for training camp and if you were
- 27:39Speaker 4: in shape, you had a chance to make the team.
- 27:41Speaker 5: But I had met some good people up there and
- 27:43Speaker 5: had a good experience.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Joe Burrow's dad, Jimmy, famously played in the CFL. If
- 27:48Speaker 1: you guys traded CFL stories.
- 27:50Speaker 5: You know what.
- 27:51Speaker 4: I did not know that, but now that I do,
- 27:53Speaker 4: maybe i'll bring that up. I saw Jimmy, my brother
- 27:56Speaker 4: in law, is now the defense coordinator at Ohio You,
- 27:59Speaker 4: and so we went up there for Easter and I
- 28:02Speaker 4: saw mister Burrow out of practice and we talked for
- 28:04Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 28:05Speaker 5: And obviously he's got a big legacy at Ohio You.
- 28:08Speaker 5: So I didn't know he played.
- 28:10Speaker 1: The cefalough now to discuss the Jimmy Burrow. So your
- 28:15Speaker 1: playing career ends, It's time to get a job in
- 28:17Speaker 1: the real world. Did I read correctly that you started
- 28:20Speaker 1: out selling cars?
- 28:21Speaker 4: My father was in the car dealer business, and at
- 28:26Speaker 4: that time I kind of thought maybe that's what I
- 28:29Speaker 4: wanted to get into, So I started working for my dad.
- 28:31Speaker 5: I worked there for three months and was miserable. Two
- 28:35Speaker 5: and a half of those months, I realized I had.
- 28:38Speaker 4: No passion for what my dad had a passion in
- 28:40Speaker 4: and quickly realized that that something in athletics.
- 28:44Speaker 5: Was the way I wanted to go.
- 28:46Speaker 4: And so I went in and told my dad, Hey,
- 28:48Speaker 4: I don't think this is working for me.
- 28:49Speaker 5: He said, I thought you would have quit, you know,
- 28:51Speaker 5: two months ago.
- 28:52Speaker 4: So I got done with that, and then my brother
- 28:55Speaker 4: in law was a defensive line coach at Importia State University,
- 28:59Speaker 4: and so I went there as the safety's coach and
- 29:01Speaker 4: assistant strength coach.
- 29:04Speaker 5: As a GA.
- 29:05Speaker 4: I was there for one semester and then that summer
- 29:08Speaker 4: I got a job at the University of Nebraska. And
- 29:11Speaker 4: that's really when my coaching career started.
- 29:14Speaker 1: And is that when you met Zach.
- 29:16Speaker 4: I did meet Zach that year. He was just getting
- 29:18Speaker 4: done playing. He was around for maybe the first three
- 29:22Speaker 4: or four weeks of the season, and then he went
- 29:24Speaker 4: to the CFL. And then the following year we both
- 29:29Speaker 4: went to Texas A and M University together.
- 29:32Speaker 1: So you guys are both kids at that point realistically,
- 29:35Speaker 1: did did you think this guy is going places someday?
- 29:39Speaker 5: You know, we hit it off right away.
- 29:41Speaker 4: It was one of those guys that we had a
- 29:43Speaker 4: lot in common, whether we sports or football or whatever.
- 29:49Speaker 4: And so we hit it off. And then he went
- 29:51Speaker 4: to the CFL. And then the next year he went
- 29:54Speaker 4: to Texas A and M as a graduate assistant, and
- 29:57Speaker 4: I went there as an assistant strength coach, and two
- 30:00Speaker 4: young coaches that were Uh he was engaged at the time,
- 30:04Speaker 4: but I was single. And we spent a lot of
- 30:06Speaker 4: a lot of weekends together and and you know, time.
- 30:09Speaker 5: Around the office. Uh, those are some good times at
- 30:12Speaker 5: Texas A.
- 30:12Speaker 1: And now, how did you gravitate towards strength and conditioning
- 30:15Speaker 1: as opposed to being a secondary coach or a position coach.
- 30:19Speaker 4: You know, I thought I wanted to be a secondary
- 30:20Speaker 4: coach when I when I first started in at Nebraska,
- 30:22Speaker 4: I was a kind of a they called it video
- 30:25Speaker 4: intern at the time.
- 30:26Speaker 5: It was kind of like a quality control job.
- 30:28Speaker 4: And I realized there very quickly that I spent all
- 30:31Speaker 4: my waking, like early in the morning or late at night.
- 30:34Speaker 5: I was always in the weight room. Uh. I loved
- 30:36Speaker 5: the physical aspect of it.
- 30:38Speaker 4: I did not enjoy, you know, the three hours of
- 30:41Speaker 4: breaking down tape or some of the analytics stuff that
- 30:44Speaker 4: these guys do as much as I thought I would,
- 30:48Speaker 4: but I did realize I love the preparation of it
- 30:52Speaker 4: and on.
- 30:53Speaker 5: The field stuff.
- 30:54Speaker 4: And so that's really when I realized that Nebraska that
- 30:57Speaker 4: hey maybe I'm in the wrong I in the right place,
- 30:59Speaker 4: but in the wrong position. And then I went to
- 31:02Speaker 4: Texas A and M. I was fortunate the guy, the
- 31:04Speaker 4: Dave Kennedy, who was the head strength coach at the
- 31:06Speaker 4: University of Resk at the time, we happened to hit
- 31:09Speaker 4: it off when I was at Wisconsin, he was at
- 31:10Speaker 4: Ohio State, and so I tend to be in the
- 31:14Speaker 4: weight room a lot during those days and we would,
- 31:16Speaker 4: you know, talk, And so when he got the job
- 31:19Speaker 4: at Texas A and M, he had called me and said, Hey,
- 31:22Speaker 4: I think you'd be pretty good at this.
- 31:24Speaker 5: Come down.
- 31:25Speaker 4: I'll teach you what you don't know. And I was
- 31:28Speaker 4: very fortunate to get that opportunity.
- 31:30Speaker 1: We're chatting with Bengals strength and conditioning coach Joey Bose.
- 31:33Speaker 1: He went from Texas A and M to Fresno State,
- 31:36Speaker 1: then Illinois and then you got a call from Zach
- 31:39Speaker 1: to come to Cincinnati when he got the head coaching
- 31:41Speaker 1: job in twenty nineteen. Did you want an NFL gig?
- 31:45Speaker 1: Did you want to work with him. What appealed to
- 31:48Speaker 1: you about this job?
- 31:50Speaker 5: I think both. Obviously, you know, I knew what kind
- 31:54Speaker 5: of guy Zach was.
- 31:55Speaker 4: I knew what kind of leader he was, and so
- 31:57Speaker 4: when the opportunity to come work for him and to
- 32:00Speaker 4: be a part of his staff came up, you know,
- 32:02Speaker 4: obviously I jumped at that. And you know, the National
- 32:06Speaker 4: Football League is the top, the top, you know, level
- 32:10Speaker 4: of this field, and so as a young coach, when
- 32:13Speaker 4: I was at Fresno State or even Texas A and M,
- 32:15Speaker 4: you know, I always thought what it would be like
- 32:16Speaker 4: to be in the National Football League and be around
- 32:18Speaker 4: the most elite players on the planet. And so, like
- 32:22Speaker 4: I said, when when Zach called me, I was very
- 32:26Speaker 4: very happy to jump on board.
- 32:28Speaker 1: So you did an interview with my colleague Jeff Hobson
- 32:32Speaker 1: shortly after taking the job for Bengals dot Com and
- 32:34Speaker 1: you said, this is before you've worked with any of
- 32:36Speaker 1: the players or anything. You said, my job is to
- 32:39Speaker 1: help implement the culture that Zach Taylor is trying to implement,
- 32:42Speaker 1: which now to me seems amazing that even before all
- 32:46Speaker 1: of that talk of the Bengals culture had started, that
- 32:50Speaker 1: was your mission from day one.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I think knowing Zach for as long as I've
- 32:54Speaker 4: known him, I think that, like the word culture gets
- 32:57Speaker 4: thrown around a lot, which is kind of the energy
- 32:59Speaker 4: that he wanted in the building on a day to
- 33:01Speaker 4: day basis was important to him and something that that
- 33:05Speaker 4: I feel is very important.
- 33:07Speaker 5: And so I guess I did say that back back then.
- 33:11Speaker 5: I didn't realize that, but.
- 33:13Speaker 4: You know, I feel like now going into year five,
- 33:15Speaker 4: we've really established what we do, how we do things,
- 33:20Speaker 4: the energy that's in the building, and that starts with
- 33:22Speaker 4: the players that we have in the front office, the
- 33:25Speaker 4: guys that they brought in, the drafted or free agents,
- 33:28Speaker 4: the guys that were already.
- 33:29Speaker 5: Here that are still here. And I'm just really fortunate
- 33:33Speaker 5: to be a part of it.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Year one was tough. Year ones are often tough, But
- 33:39Speaker 1: you started zero to eleven. How'd you get through it?
- 33:43Speaker 5: Ah, that was tough. You know, I got a great family.
- 33:45Speaker 4: I got three little boys that when I would come home,
- 33:48Speaker 4: you know, they weren't worried about winning a lot losing.
- 33:51Speaker 4: They just want to see Dad, And uh, you know
- 33:54Speaker 4: that that's a big part of it. And I think too,
- 33:56Speaker 4: like knowing that eventually kind of seeing what's happening now,
- 34:00Speaker 4: Did I see what has happened?
- 34:03Speaker 5: Probably not, you know, I thought we had.
- 34:05Speaker 4: A chance to kind of break through and establish being
- 34:09Speaker 4: a good team. But we stayed the course and we
- 34:12Speaker 4: were very consistent in our approach and what we've done.
- 34:15Speaker 4: You know, Year two wasn't much easier, you know, I
- 34:18Speaker 4: think we went two wins to four wins.
- 34:20Speaker 5: Uh And then obviously year three was a really big year.
- 34:23Speaker 4: But we take a lot of pride in how we've
- 34:26Speaker 4: done things and the consistency that we've done it. And
- 34:28Speaker 4: I think now we're seeing, you know, all that hard
- 34:31Speaker 4: work payoff.
- 34:31Speaker 5: A little bit.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Year three was a good year. That was an understatement.
- 34:36Speaker 1: As you guys went to the Super Bowl, what was
- 34:37Speaker 1: the highlight of that experience for you?
- 34:40Speaker 4: Well, I think the playoffs. I think I think getting
- 34:44Speaker 4: to the playoffs and then and then winning that first
- 34:46Speaker 4: playoff game was I know, in this building was a
- 34:48Speaker 4: big deal, you know. And then you know, you're kind
- 34:51Speaker 4: of playing with house money after that, you know, and
- 34:53Speaker 4: then we go to Tennessee and last second kick, and
- 34:56Speaker 4: I just remember vividly, like the locker room, the players
- 35:00Speaker 4: and how happy everybody was. I think those are the
- 35:04Speaker 4: memories when I close my eyes I think.
- 35:06Speaker 1: About Let's talk a little bit about the current team.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Joe Burrow is noticeably more well defined, I guess would
- 35:15Speaker 1: be my description of him just from being around these
- 35:17Speaker 1: OTA periods. Describe working with Joe Burrow.
- 35:21Speaker 5: Joe's great to work with. He is I've said this before.
- 35:24Speaker 4: He's got an elite work ethic and which I don't
- 35:27Speaker 4: think you know. Everyone sees how great he is on Sundays,
- 35:29Speaker 4: and he is, he's a superstar in the league.
- 35:32Speaker 5: But the way he carries himself, his leadership, and then
- 35:34Speaker 5: his work ethic.
- 35:35Speaker 4: I mean, he's a guy that puts in the work
- 35:38Speaker 4: to be as good as he is in every aspect,
- 35:41Speaker 4: whether it's in the weight room, whether it's his nutrition,
- 35:44Speaker 4: his conditioning, his speed work. Joe really does put in
- 35:49Speaker 4: the work to be a great quarterback.
- 35:52Speaker 1: He has a trainer that he's worked with for several years.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Everybody on this team has worked in college weight rooms,
- 35:58Speaker 1: a lot of great strength coaches and things like that.
- 36:01Speaker 1: How do you deal with that at the NFL level
- 36:04Speaker 1: where these guys already have programs that have been successful
- 36:07Speaker 1: for them.
- 36:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it comes down to communication and the
- 36:10Speaker 4: relationship that we have with the players and being able
- 36:12Speaker 4: to talk to them, Hey, what have you done over
- 36:15Speaker 4: the off season? What do you like doing, what do
- 36:16Speaker 4: you not like doing, explaining our program to them and
- 36:19Speaker 4: why we do what we do, and the players buying
- 36:22Speaker 4: has been really good, you know. And during the season
- 36:25Speaker 4: our job is to help make them feel as fast
- 36:29Speaker 4: and as fresh and as strong as they can on Sundays,
- 36:32Speaker 4: and so far we've had a lot of success doing that.
- 36:36Speaker 1: At the NFL Combine, they measure speed with a forty
- 36:39Speaker 1: yard dash. How do you guys measure speed?
- 36:42Speaker 5: You know?
- 36:43Speaker 4: We use a catapult system to track our players during
- 36:45Speaker 4: player during practice, and that gives us a number on
- 36:49Speaker 4: how much distance they've run, how fast they're running. A
- 36:54Speaker 4: multitude of different data points that we can look at,
- 36:58Speaker 4: but that's how we measure speed.
- 37:00Speaker 5: And we have a Garrett Swanson, it's our sports science coach.
- 37:05Speaker 4: He is always on a computer a practice, So if
- 37:07Speaker 4: you ever come to practice, he's on the computer with
- 37:09Speaker 4: a tablet in his hand, so we get instant feedback
- 37:12Speaker 4: of how fast or how well these guys are moving
- 37:14Speaker 4: during practice. That's how we track it during practice, and
- 37:18Speaker 4: then obviously how we communicate it during the week with
- 37:21Speaker 4: our players to make sure on Sunday we're moving good.
- 37:25Speaker 1: In terms of brute strength, moving mass. Who is the
- 37:29Speaker 1: strongest player on the.
- 37:30Speaker 5: Team I'm gonna get in trouble?
- 37:33Speaker 1: Feel free to name a few hurt anybody's feelings.
- 37:37Speaker 4: DJ Readers at the top of the list, BJ Hills
- 37:39Speaker 4: at the top of the list, Ted Carris, Alex Kappa.
- 37:44Speaker 4: Those are just a few guys that I can name
- 37:48Speaker 4: that that are pretty pretty strong. We have a lot
- 37:52Speaker 4: of a lot of strong players.
- 37:55Speaker 5: But those are just a few. And the fastest another
- 38:00Speaker 5: one that's gonna get me in trouble. Jamar's up there.
- 38:05Speaker 4: T Higgins is up there, Cheetoh is up there, Cam
- 38:11Speaker 4: Taylor Britt is up there. Tyson Anderson would be up there,
- 38:17Speaker 4: Dax Hill would be up there. There's a couple guys
- 38:20Speaker 4: that are battling for that twenty two mile an hour spot.
- 38:24Speaker 4: And we've seen, you know, we've seen some really high
- 38:26Speaker 4: speeds over the years, but those are a handful.
- 38:29Speaker 5: We got a really fast team right now, really fast.
- 38:32Speaker 1: And rookie DJ Turner is going to add his name
- 38:34Speaker 1: to the list, I'm sure after running a four to
- 38:36Speaker 1: two six forty at the combine. When he came into
- 38:39Speaker 1: the building, I asked him, are you looking to put
- 38:42Speaker 1: on some weight get bigger? And he said, well, speed
- 38:46Speaker 1: is my thing, not necessarily size. So how do you
- 38:50Speaker 1: balance questions like that?
- 38:53Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's a great question. I don't want to
- 38:56Speaker 4: take away the trait that's got them here, right and
- 38:59Speaker 4: for him at speed, agility and how well he moves. Now,
- 39:01Speaker 4: obviously we want to get him stronger along the way,
- 39:04Speaker 4: and if we can put a little bit of size
- 39:05Speaker 4: on him, great, because we all know it's a physical
- 39:08Speaker 4: game that they're going to play on Sunday. But we
- 39:11Speaker 4: want to keep our you know, greyhounds, greyhounds, you know,
- 39:14Speaker 4: we want to keep our big guys big. We don't
- 39:16Speaker 4: want to try to take away the trait that makes them,
- 39:20Speaker 4: you know, what they are. And so dj would be
- 39:22Speaker 4: a great example. He's not the biggest guy in the world,
- 39:25Speaker 4: but he moves really well, and so we wouldn't want
- 39:28Speaker 4: to do something in the weight room that would hinder
- 39:31Speaker 4: his ability to do what he does best.
- 39:34Speaker 1: You have some behemoths on an NFL roster, How do
- 39:37Speaker 1: you determine ideal body weight for a guy that's that big.
- 39:42Speaker 5: It's tough.
- 39:43Speaker 4: You know. We got a lot of data over the
- 39:46Speaker 4: years of different guys and by position and what they weigh,
- 39:50Speaker 4: and everyone's different, right, So you know, if you play
- 39:54Speaker 4: offensive line, you don't have to be three hundred and
- 39:56Speaker 4: thirty pounds, you know, but we would like to see
- 39:59Speaker 4: our O lignement three hundred plus depending on what position
- 40:03Speaker 4: they play in the O line obviously is another factor.
- 40:07Speaker 4: And then where the player feels most comfortable and how
- 40:11Speaker 4: well do they move at that weight?
- 40:13Speaker 5: Right, So bigger is better if they can move the same.
- 40:17Speaker 4: So you know, I always say I never want to
- 40:20Speaker 4: put on size at the expense for how well they move.
- 40:23Speaker 4: How we determine that, it's there's a number of things
- 40:27Speaker 4: we do.
- 40:27Speaker 5: We do body fat calculations.
- 40:30Speaker 4: And parameters by position, and we give all of our
- 40:34Speaker 4: players in a signed weight when they leave here for
- 40:36Speaker 4: the summertime and then they come back. But body weight
- 40:39Speaker 4: is something we track weekly here at the Bengals.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Is there an exercise or a test of some sort
- 40:46Speaker 1: that you think is the best gauge of athleticism.
- 40:52Speaker 4: I'd say pull ups, you know, being able to being
- 40:55Speaker 4: able to handle your own body weight, right, And so
- 40:57Speaker 4: in my experience. You're you're talking about your fastest guys
- 41:02Speaker 4: are gonna be able to do the most pull ups generally.
- 41:05Speaker 4: Also to being able to handle your own body weight
- 41:08Speaker 4: is a big deal. There's a number of different exercise
- 41:11Speaker 4: I'm a big single leg guy for their lower body, right,
- 41:16Speaker 4: and so we do a lot of split squats or
- 41:18Speaker 4: single leg stuff in the weight room to help, you know,
- 41:23Speaker 4: maximize their ability on the field.
- 41:27Speaker 1: Describe the meaning of FAT as in p H a.
- 41:31Speaker 4: T physical hungry, accountable teammate. And so that's something that
- 41:39Speaker 4: we came up with the first first year here. That
- 41:41Speaker 4: was the first team meeting, I believe, was that what
- 41:44Speaker 4: is a Bengal physical, hungry, accountable teammate who was willing
- 41:48Speaker 4: to do anything to get the job done.
- 41:50Speaker 5: And so you can see we put on the wall
- 41:52Speaker 5: in the weight room.
- 41:54Speaker 4: The FAT acronym just kind of came if we weren't
- 41:57Speaker 4: thinking that at the beginning, but it's kind of turned
- 42:00Speaker 4: into that, and that's something that that our scouting department,
- 42:05Speaker 4: our coaches, our strength staff, we put a premium on it.
- 42:08Speaker 5: Guys, being physical, hungry, accountable teammate.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Your job has become very high tech. How do you
- 42:16Speaker 1: keep up with the latest advancements in technology and analytics
- 42:20Speaker 1: and everything else involved.
- 42:21Speaker 4: You know, there is a lot of stuff. It's changed
- 42:23Speaker 4: tremendously since since when I played.
- 42:25Speaker 5: I mean, we didn't have any of this stuff.
- 42:27Speaker 4: I'd even say in the last geez five seven five
- 42:32Speaker 4: to seven years. It's it's really, you know, changed with
- 42:35Speaker 4: the tracking units and what we can do with the
- 42:37Speaker 4: Tendo units and stuff in the weight room. You know,
- 42:41Speaker 4: we are looking into all this stuff constantly, We're reading
- 42:44Speaker 4: about it constantly. But I also think you've got to
- 42:47Speaker 4: be able to trust your instincts and what you see
- 42:51Speaker 4: with your eyes and have some of the technology confirm that.
- 42:55Speaker 4: We don't want to go too far down the analytics
- 42:58Speaker 4: track where we're missing something right now in front of
- 43:00Speaker 4: our eyes. But it has been the Catapult system for
- 43:04Speaker 4: us has been tremendous for how we practice and giving
- 43:08Speaker 4: us a gauge of how hard a practice is for
- 43:11Speaker 4: our team.
- 43:12Speaker 1: Final thing for Bengal Strength and Conditioning coach Joey Bose,
- 43:16Speaker 1: I have a piece of a goal post from nineteen
- 43:19Speaker 1: ninety nine when the UC Bearcats were not very good.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Oh boy, but they upset ninth ranked Wisconsin at Nippert Stadium.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Doug Rossfeld, who is Zach Taylor's right hand man with
- 43:33Speaker 1: Cincinnati starting center in that game, the fans stormed the field.
- 43:36Speaker 1: They tore down the goal post. I got a chunk.
- 43:39Speaker 1: What do you remember about that day at Nippert Stadium?
- 43:41Speaker 1: If anything, it.
- 43:44Speaker 5: Was not a good bus ride home. I know that.
- 43:46Speaker 5: I know we we were. That was my sophomore year.
- 43:50Speaker 4: We were ride and high and we came in maybe
- 43:53Speaker 4: it was week three or fours early in the season.
- 43:54Speaker 5: I believe, And.
- 43:57Speaker 4: I just remember you guys, we just have any answers.
- 44:01Speaker 4: It was like you were throwing to the little slot receiver.
- 44:04Speaker 4: Was there a Chapman or I don't remember yet there
- 44:07Speaker 4: was a Chapman, Okay, but yeah, it was not a
- 44:10Speaker 4: good bus right home.
- 44:11Speaker 5: That was a I think that might have been our
- 44:13Speaker 5: only loss that season.
- 44:14Speaker 1: You lost the next week against Michigan and then didn't
- 44:18Speaker 1: lose again. Okay, And that was your second Rose Bowl.
- 44:21Speaker 5: Year Cincinnati and Michigan.
- 44:25Speaker 1: It all turned out well and Ron Dane won the
- 44:27Speaker 1: Heisman that year.
- 44:28Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, that was a good year for us at
- 44:31Speaker 4: the end, but it didn't start so good.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Joey, this has been fun. Congratulations on your success today.
- 44:36Speaker 1: You've been a big reason why the Bengals have been
- 44:38Speaker 1: so good in recent years, and I look forward to
- 44:40Speaker 1: chatting again down the road.
- 44:41Speaker 5: Appreciate it. Thank you, Dan.
