Transcript
- 0:33I'm so drunk. Hello, dear listener.
- 0:40And welcome back to a hamster with a blunt.
- 0:42Penknife the only Doctor Who commentary podcast whose hosts
- 0:46are each packing. A compact laser Deluxe which
- 0:49might be why we're sitting so uncomfortably I'm Nathan, ah,
- 0:55and I'm Joe. So Joe, what are we watching
- 0:58today? I don't know.
- 1:00But I really felt like I was never.
- 1:01So, dove fly for a charity run. I felt that last line was
- 1:06Untitled Star Trek projects, you know.
- 1:11We've had a lot of this together now.
- 1:12And what would you fix a question?
- 1:14You've not, you've not appeared in my schedules for ages.
- 1:17Where the hell have you been? Well, I did a briefing with
- 1:21Steven be to talk about haunting ability audacity, but I mean,
- 1:25we've been putting out a Star Trek episode a week, and I guess
- 1:29that left a bit less time for hamster than we had hoped.
- 1:35Then leave aisle criticisms of the chip.
- 1:37No, are all around in that hole. I'll tell ya I can bring it up
- 1:43here I'm back. But this is one like where I'm
- 1:49watching. What is most of the time?
- 1:53My favorite ever Doctor? Who story?
- 1:54I think ever as in classic new ever mmm, certainly I think this
- 2:00era is my favorite era. The Russell T, Davies era.
- 2:05You know without question and I think I think that this is just
- 2:10magnificent and just watching it not just the production values
- 2:14and stuff but I get taken back to 2005.
- 2:17And the thing that I think of is I'm at work in 2005 sitting in
- 2:21the lunchroom. And someone says to me you look
- 2:26really happy for some reason and I kind of think about it for a
- 2:30second and say I think the only possible reason for that is the
- 2:36talk to who is finally back on and it's It's good.
- 2:40You know, it sounds crazy. Yeah, we got it.
- 2:44Obviously, I mean, people will know because they'll be really
- 2:46on their podcast catches, the we're doing bad wolf and parting
- 2:49of the ways so the end of series 1 but this is like we made it
- 2:54like the show was bad, it was good.
- 2:57And then it built to an incredible climax like we could
- 3:01never a fossil that it would be this Groot.
- 3:04Yeah, yeah. And and you know that that it
- 3:07would become the biggest thing on TV.
- 3:09I think until Downton Abbey comes a lot along.
- 3:13This is the biggest thing on British television and in this
- 3:16episode it even encompasses other popular television
- 3:20programs. The what is super cheeky.
- 3:23It's like doctor who comes back on television and then starts to
- 3:27take over television. You know, the Daleks are
- 3:30secretly producing. Half of the favorite program.
- 3:36Reducing your all of the reality TV out there Yeah, I do not at
- 3:40all. Surprised.
- 3:41Have you seen something? Yeah, well I I was a big fan of
- 3:45the weakest link and we had a version of it in Australia where
- 3:51and Robinson's role was played by Cornelia Francis who she was
- 3:59Alf. Sister in the early years of
- 4:03home and away. Oh my God!
- 4:06She is a particularly terrifying.
- 4:09A A lead actress who I think it was probably scarier than and
- 4:13Robinson if you can believe such a thing.
- 4:16So I really like that. I thought that was pretty good
- 4:18and I liked What Not to Wear as well and I think I was watching
- 4:21that at the time training suits. Are y'all gonna watch that my
- 4:25call the Fatal mistakes that they point out, you know?
- 4:28Yeah, no, I'm terrible. I'm terrible.
- 4:29But I like it's that version of reality TV where someone lovely
- 4:35and expert comes in and fixes you and you No.
- 4:39It's like queer eye. Or where the Gordon Ramsay?
- 4:43Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:44Or Gordon. Ramsey comes in and calls.
- 4:46You a fucking idiot and then restaurant.
- 4:56It's really good. This isn't it.
- 4:58But the best. Wow.
- 5:00That's that's a big statement, you know.
- 5:02Well, you know, like I'm not, I'm not the person who has, you
- 5:06know, rankings and spreadsheets and thing.
- 5:09Like that. And so come to me on another day
- 5:11and I'll say it's power of the dialects, or, or I'll say, it's
- 5:14aliens of London because I'm like that, or maybe here you are
- 5:19the Angels two-parter in series 5 or something like that.
- 5:23But this, I think, you know, it has a really special place in my
- 5:28heart. I think just because of, when it
- 5:30appeared in the history of the show, Well I think we should go
- 5:35ahead and watch the thing that don't you.
- 5:37Yeah, absolutely. So like how the in like liking
- 5:41someone title Star Trek project. All right, it's nice.
- 5:45Five, four, three, two, one. And we're off, you know, we
- 5:53don't know about those who very often you baby.
- 5:54We talked so often on a podcast, but this is the easiest thing in
- 5:58the world. I think, okay is elongate the
- 6:02long term. So I remember going to a
- 6:05friend's place and watching the long game and it was one of
- 6:07those ones where, you know, every episode had to be
- 6:10fantastic. And otherwise it was going to be
- 6:14a real problem. And in retrospect I think the
- 6:17long game is is fantastic because it's right, isn't it?
- 6:20I think yeah. Only what?
- 6:21Like, okay, this isn't quite a show you what's going on around
- 6:24it but actually you go back and watch it.
- 6:26There's quite a few layers there.
- 6:28Yeah look at the cast. Look at, you know, the The
- 6:33doctor does, his trick of inspiring, someone to solve the
- 6:37problem, by doing her job correctly, the beautiful cathica
- 6:41once or twice in series one Denis, but I think that's a good
- 6:44thing that he's called the doctor.
- 6:46It makes people better, it leads up to that bit part of the ways
- 6:50where he has to make the choice. Yeah.
- 6:53And then these are hundred years later is so so random and we had
- 6:58big brother and we have an Australian version, Big Brother
- 7:00that didn't have this music. So I didn't recognize this
- 7:03Immediately and I didn't, I don't believe that.
- 7:06I knew that this was going to be happening.
- 7:09So I think browser. Yeah.
- 7:13They usually die really Sinister way in this.
- 7:15Yeah, yeah, yeah, it means something.
- 7:18Terrible's gonna happen. Oh, look at that terrible vacuum
- 7:20form. Chair of the hand that hand.
- 7:22Yeah, I don't know that. I want to sit on it like that.
- 7:28Yes. That do you think that's
- 7:30deliberate? The Daleks are producing this
- 7:32after all. Hello.
- 7:33You made it. Yeah.
- 7:41So here's our first gay character in Doctor Who that's
- 7:44not quite true. But, isn't his name, I remember,
- 7:54she's strewed, isn't she? I can't remember his name.
- 7:58Yeah. That's what we're all thinking a
- 8:06hard, but yeah, it's Channel 4000 or forty four thousand or
- 8:11something instead of channel for yeah. 44,000, please do not
- 8:15swear it. So sure reference to swear.
- 8:17Well, you know, do things that are style things.
- 8:22I've loved it so much. Yeah.
- 8:24Me too. It's got a lot of energy to it
- 8:26music and visuals. Yeah and it is the sort of thing
- 8:29you know, this version of Doctor Who isn't based so much on
- 8:33doctor. Who as it is based on our
- 8:35memories of Doctor Who and it. Like, I think that becomes very
- 8:38important in episode 2 of this story where the Daleks are, how
- 8:42we always imagined, they should be a not how they actually
- 8:44appeared on TV and this, you know, we're traveling too fast
- 8:53day of the Daleks is 3, he's such a great, Addison, Jason.
- 9:03Roofs of, isn't he? He does loathsome really well.
- 9:07I think have you seen him in Peep Show?
- 9:10I think David Mitchell's character kind of falls in love
- 9:13with him in Peepshow because he's so sexy and I think he can
- 9:18be really sexy and of course you noted for the doxa.
- 9:21Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:23People used to mention him as a possibility, but here, he's
- 9:26doing his best job of just being loathsome.
- 9:30And he's not doing it yet, that which is really interesting,
- 9:32like, He's being kind and sort of helping her because she's
- 9:36waking up and like this just thrusting Us in made.
- 9:42Our surveys Strider straight away.
- 9:44You know, we have literally no idea how they end up in these TV
- 9:48shows, and they're just love when they explain it.
- 9:51And it's just tells you everything you need to know, you
- 9:57know, and yeah, yeah, yeah, it's Exposition done, right?
- 10:00It's just throw us in the middle confuses.
- 10:03Make this a mystery and not Moffat star mystery, he would
- 10:08start at the beginning and then keep going.
- 10:12I've been taken away by I, trust me, but this thing we recognize
- 10:20sort of the visual language of the week, the state.
- 10:22Yeah. All right.
- 10:23And then it builds up to the ad and then the Android such a
- 10:29shitty joke but who cares? And she's not Trinny and
- 10:35Susannah robot, I've Got Fabulous cleavage, You Know,
- 10:40Jack does fondle one of their breasts.
- 10:43And again, like these are weird costumes, they're sort of
- 10:47plasticky and stuff like that. I hated them.
- 10:50Did you hear all the Russia's came in for these two parts,
- 10:53right? And he was gonna love it.
- 10:55I love it was marvelous. Fantastic.
- 10:57And then, on the last day, when all the sets have been struck
- 10:59down, this footage came in, he was like that.
- 11:05Bitchy robots kind of terrible, aren't they?
- 11:12I don't know if I should mention John Barrowman getting naked.
- 11:14Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Poor old John.
- 11:17He has been canceled, and kind of rightly.
- 11:19So I belong to him. Being naked in create no, no, my
- 11:25it. Yeah, and it is, it's funny.
- 11:27Like it's a funny be State. Well, either jokes of like, you
- 11:31know, guns coming out of exhaust and things like that.
- 11:33But They actually took out the all shop, didn't they?
- 11:36Yeah. Yeah so they can say it but we
- 11:38can't see his butt crack. He's shy, I'll join us.
- 11:43Okay, let's talk about living with why briefly.
- 11:46So she's what soap is she in? She's famous now or more famous
- 11:50now than she was. Then I have issues have been our
- 11:52work. You never show you on it, your
- 11:54name of theater. She's been in it.
- 11:57So I mean you had Toby hey you know, con hamster, didn't you?
- 12:01And he cared about her. As the unkillable character, she
- 12:05absolutely can't be killed and Russell.
- 12:10Like this is fun and funny but it's also kind of impossibly
- 12:15Bleak this story like and at the end it's really very dark and we
- 12:20see sort of an Unleashed Russell.
- 12:23I think in things like midnight and love and monsters where he's
- 12:28riding on his own, he's not writing, you know, like a big
- 12:30two-parter, a big event story, he's just writing something.
- 12:33You know, in the middle or towards the end of the season,
- 12:36and he's really Bleak, and really miserable.
- 12:39And there's this real tension between the big Jolly Russell.
- 12:42Everything's marvelous marvelous, you know, and and
- 12:48population. Yeah, yeah, Davis.
- 12:52Yeah, well, I think I think that, you know, this doctor is
- 12:55like Russell. I've said this before that both
- 12:57of Russell's doctors are Russell in the sense that there's a deep
- 13:01kind of dark cynicism at their Tha.
- 13:04And then there's a jolliness that he's a facade.
- 13:07Is this beautiful saying that? Was it like 5 Seconds like that
- 13:11we know why there's like, you know, like I know face of evil,
- 13:14the doctor would appear in the Big Brother house and hears his
- 13:17ready-made companion, you know? And, yeah, episode.
- 13:20She looks like she's being built up to be a compact.
- 13:22Yeah, you can't kill her. She's gonna go off on adventures
- 13:25with the doctor and then when the moment cups and we'll get
- 13:28there, bloody hell, she's so adorable.
- 13:32Like, she's so. Audibly lovable and so, real
- 13:35even got food, try and do love a ball and like that, sometimes it
- 13:39could be saccharin and just unbearable but she's just, it's
- 13:43just right. I picture just right.
- 13:46And look at that doctor here. It's like he liked him looking
- 13:53out of the TV the way that that trout and does all the time or
- 13:57you know him looking at a weird reflection like the the
- 14:00marshaling in Armageddon fact. And look at that TV.
- 14:07Holy crap. So he's the floor manager who
- 14:13will have a big role in episode 2.
- 14:17I think that this scene is absolutely fucking incredible.
- 14:21This whole sequence is so good because she doesn't know what's
- 14:26at stake at the beginning, but everyone else does and she's
- 14:32kind of she thinks this Is as silly as long as the weakest
- 14:44link and he studied its structure.
- 14:46Yeah, it wasn't just like he goes, he goes, you know, you
- 14:49think you just be able to write and if so do we think that that
- 14:51would be really easy because he's absolutely structured that
- 14:55quiz show. But look at, look at rise
- 14:59compared to everyone else's think because it's not just the
- 15:02structure like it's Is this sort of back and forth and stuff like
- 15:05that. The questions are really well
- 15:07designed to because some of them are playing.
- 15:10Did you not hear talk to ya? Yeah, Torchwood gets mentioned.
- 15:15Here it is. The great Cobalt pyramid is
- 15:17built on the remains of which old Earth Institute and he
- 15:22guessed wrong. The I stopped Galaxy is well,
- 15:24yes, the oldest in happened to the ice of galaxies and it the
- 15:30face of BOE. He gets it, right?
- 15:32Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:33Yeah, Val's. But if you're shopping, this is
- 15:37Charles to put all these little Easter eggs, isn't it?
- 15:39Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:41And look. Oh my God.
- 15:44I love this. You know, this, this panel.
- 15:49I don't even know if I get names.
- 15:50I'll know. He does.
- 15:51No, they don't. No, no, no, no, no.
- 15:54Yeah. So, and I think they're really
- 15:57well written as well. So, you know, they're here.
- 16:01Why are they here? They're here as a sort of
- 16:03Intriguing stuff, but they play a massive role in part 2 as
- 16:06well. He's a child.
- 16:08So John Barrowman to stretching, leave this Castle.
- 16:19This man injected, a fuck. Ton of Charisma into Doctor Who
- 16:24did. Yeah, we are used to having it
- 16:26Doctor. Who no, no.
- 16:28And like, like a male companion, who is like sexy and sell Of
- 16:33confident like as that ever has there been a character in Doctor
- 16:37Who before this is sexy and self-confident like it.
- 16:40It's really good. So maybe maybe but like it look,
- 16:44he just rubs her breasts there, which is pretty awesome.
- 16:48Oh my God, it's like here where she goes.
- 16:50Are you unemployed? You are unemployed you still got
- 16:53tired but good but that's the thing.
- 17:02I mean that's exactly what Days. You had trash people and she's
- 17:06she's a little bit defensive, but she also thinks it's kind of
- 17:10funny, like, look I reaction to it.
- 17:12Yeah, yeah. It's just like she's just
- 17:15sentences woman to death. And yes, I'm not saying, you
- 17:19know, that's the game after all. Yeah.
- 17:21What have I mean? She's such a bitch.
- 17:24Oh, bitch is so good. Holy shit.
- 17:27This is a tiny, tiny part and it's so brilliant and we still
- 17:32don't know. No, do not have been a now she's
- 17:34begging and that's the thing. Like, that's the point at which
- 17:37we realize that something's wrong because that never
- 17:39happens, you know, like the please please help me.
- 17:43And this like in Rose can't quite get.
- 17:45It's so good. Of course I can look her in the
- 17:49eye. Yeah.
- 17:51Android was gonna spit the laser of her mouth.
- 17:54That's where we're bad. Oh my God.
- 18:02This is, oh my God. This is illegal.
- 18:08It's actually so ridiculous. Michael.
- 18:15And yet is so Sinister the way, he's yeah, yeah.
- 18:25I'll totally very different and yeah, I think he's incredible in
- 18:29every single one. Oh yeah, yet.
- 18:32No, he's the star of this season.
- 18:34The way the Graham Harper is the star of the next season, I
- 18:37think, Do not worry about who exactly the same thing.
- 18:41But big brother the doctor sit there go well that worried she's
- 18:44going to release an exercise video.
- 18:47It's the thing that has to happen.
- 18:49We have three separate plots. And so the same reveal has to
- 18:51happen in three successive scenes in the plot.
- 18:54So we see, but Jack doesn't see that they're going to sort of,
- 18:57carbon me to pieces with big scissors, and chain, saws and
- 18:59stuff. Then we see there, we see Fitch
- 19:03being disintegrated. And now, we see poor old strewed
- 19:07was A cross B. You know whose cross because
- 19:10he's crossed be 90s. Probably screwed.
- 19:12So it's true. The gay one.
- 19:13They do where they make the arch by the door and she goes.
- 19:16Yeah, there are. But that's here comes a chopper
- 19:19to chop off your head. Isn't it?
- 19:20Like, is that chip chop? The Last Man is dead.
- 19:25Yeah, so it's Crosby and strewed is the terrible gay one there,
- 19:29which is pretty great trick. Was it done all over the walls?
- 19:33Sorry, I'm late. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:35But I mean, that's what they do in the Big Brother house, isn't
- 19:37it? It's like, it's The finger
- 19:39painting Challenge and some bullshit.
- 19:41And you say, well these are we, here is when Davina goes and
- 19:43then we're going to get you because she loves say that,
- 19:46doesn't she? She says we'll get you and it's
- 19:49kind of like we'll get you out but it we repurpose that as
- 19:52Sinister. It's so good.
- 19:55I mean there is something a bit Sinister about reality TV
- 20:00watching people's lives in this level of detail.
- 20:03Yeah, yeah, yeah. And like, you know, we used to
- 20:06quiz game shows, we had a thing called the Great Temptation here
- 20:09and then a thing called sale of the century and even like the
- 20:11chase, which is just a game show where, you know, people get
- 20:15asked questions and win money or whatever.
- 20:17But the thing about the weakest link was people voted each other
- 20:21off tactically. And so they had to fight one
- 20:23another and they had to say nasty, Things about one another,
- 20:26they're encouraged to do that. And, you know, so the that dark
- 20:31and I think that, you know, Russell doesn't come from a
- 20:34place where he has contempt for these shows at more.
- 20:39Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 20:40Like Russell loves television. Fuck.
- 20:43Yep. There goes cross B.
- 20:45Doesn't he go? The doctor goes.
- 20:47It's a Charlie house. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:50But this is him just suddenly realizing it and she said,
- 20:55Brother sex. Yeah, yeah, executed.
- 20:58She goes, but it's not like it was.
- 21:00They used to be loads more and, and we, and Drew drops his kind
- 21:04of PC game. A acting is just like genuinely
- 21:08overcome with emotion. It's really good.
- 21:10Like it's so good. The moment we know that really
- 21:13gets me is when he realizes, is he died that trout and things.
- 21:17Skipping out the story at the end when he thinks the problem
- 21:20is dealt with and then 100 years later because of what he did.
- 21:25Has all transpired, all these people up though.
- 21:27I don't been turned into dialects and that is one of the
- 21:31bleakest smoke Notions in this, you know, is everything the
- 21:34doctors fault because of when he chose to go.
- 21:37Yeah, yeah. So what happened to these your
- 21:41this the the controller? It's so good.
- 21:47It's so genius. I mean it's really simple.
- 21:50It's not just like sort of those wires.
- 21:53Yeah. Yeah yeah.
- 21:54And there's sort of like UV light or something.
- 21:57It's because it's quite simple. I think they do something.
- 22:02Yeah. A more sort of visually
- 22:04spectacular but I like us of with Yeah.
- 22:10And so these this is sort of a lisent it where you're just
- 22:15chosen randomly by transmat new end up in the quiz shows and
- 22:19your killed for his office. He went no it starts to talk
- 22:23about all the ground Falls where you get turned into compost so
- 22:29much. It's so good.
- 22:31He's kind of like my the doctor and said, you look, I'm coming
- 22:36for you. It's Chris Brown.
- 22:38Yeah, yeah yeah, yeah. It's so old armored.
- 22:41That's not a good look. I was tennis whites.
- 22:44No, no terrible. Where were you hiding?
- 22:59So what does he do? He does five five episodes this
- 23:02season like is in the last half of the Season he does the to the
- 23:06Moffitt two-parter Boom Town, which is brilliant and decided
- 23:13these two paying time, which is heal her operation.
- 23:16Is that God? It's good.
- 23:17It's really really properly good.
- 23:19And it's one of those things where we get to just rest and
- 23:21hang out with the characters and we have a very minimal mystery
- 23:24but it's basically like the scenes between rows and Mickey
- 23:27in that episode are so brilliant.
- 23:29So apparently getting in 20 Susanna and Robinson and Davina.
- 23:35It was all last minute and it was all Joe a Just go and
- 23:38challenge kowalska. Let's just say well, do like yes
- 23:42we're trusting is they? They didn't have to give like
- 23:48Great Performances and yet they're very shy.
- 23:51Yeah, you know, where are you hiding back?
- 23:56There goes Colleen. Oh here we go.
- 23:59Starting to show his colors. I want to be applicants to
- 24:01Define. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:05I mean, he's really really quite horrible in the Next episode, he
- 24:08goes full Karen anything in the next episode, but here, I think,
- 24:13I think I great. Where is go.
- 24:14Where's my money? And then it was a dollar?
- 24:16Yeah, yeah, yeah, snarling, isn't it?
- 24:22He's really obnoxious and he's got those sort of sharp looking
- 24:26teeth or something. He's really good-looking.
- 24:28Oh, here we go. Look the culmination of that
- 24:30wall throughout the season. Yeah.
- 24:33And so it turns out, it's from a nursery rhyme.
- 24:37I'm yeah, big bad wolf. Yeah, which we knew and it gets
- 24:42mentioned over and over again and the big bad wolf.
- 24:46I thought, I think at the time when we watch the unquiet dead,
- 24:50when Gwyneth looks at Rose and sees the big bad wolf that it's
- 24:56about the doctor and then and then bad wolf gets sprayed on
- 24:59the Tardis. You know, is he the bad wolf?
- 25:01Taking this innocent girl somewhere and we've already been
- 25:05primed by episode one to consider him as potentially.
- 25:07He dangerous and he's wearing the dark jacket and all of that.
- 25:10And then to discovered her since Doctor Who came off TV,
- 25:15obviously there are whole landscape of television has
- 25:17changed. We've got into our base Seasons,
- 25:20where the things I lifted about Rusty Davis is so plugged into
- 25:23that, he's watched Buffy and all this stuff and he knows exactly
- 25:26what he's doing and the speculation of what man, those
- 25:30forums where literally goes so huge.
- 25:33We'd never had that, you know, know and this is what I think.
- 25:37Couple of seasons of maybe best it coming up.
- 25:41Yeah but I think the it was never more exciting because it
- 25:45yes, that's right. I think the Arc in series 3 is
- 25:48the best one. I think it's you know, easily
- 25:51the best one where the end of the night is huh, but the end of
- 25:56episode 11, the master travels back in time to the end of
- 26:01Series 2. And yeah, that's you know, like
- 26:04it's so cleverly done here here. Yeah, here it's a little light
- 26:09but it is the same thing with an event in its lies except causes
- 26:15he's introducing the idea of this.
- 26:17Yeah, right. And going all to the Warriors
- 26:20enough series and it was enough. I remember people get very
- 26:23excited when it came to that being bad.
- 26:25Sorry, good. Great, Boon town, where is Sun?
- 26:29Yo, they suddenly made us aware of all the references that here,
- 26:33you know. Okay.
- 26:34This is building to something. We know where it's going.
- 26:36This very exciting and then You see, bad wolf right on the wall,
- 26:41you li. Are we here?
- 26:42You know what? I think there's a bit of Moffitt
- 26:45re here because I think that the bad wolf thing, the main creates
- 26:51itself like she keeps hearing the words bad wolf.
- 26:54And so then she takes the name of bad wolf, this thing and
- 27:00sends it back in time again. So it doesn't have a cause or
- 27:03maybe the Daleks cause it. I mean, I think bad wolf works.
- 27:07In the context of the long game because it's about media and we
- 27:13think Fox, you know as one of the great evil media kind of
- 27:17companies in the entire world and so bad wolf is just like Fox
- 27:22you know but otherwise it just has no cause does it.
- 27:26She she causes a life. You know I love how cheekily
- 27:30just as a take that side and just wave it off into time and
- 27:33space. That's enough to explain why
- 27:36we've seen it all but Ivan spice, man, honestly, He's Got
- 27:43His Wish talking about all the other reality TV shows.
- 27:47Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 27:48But we're getting to the point where, you know, like now he has
- 27:54some idea of the scale of this. I think how about where you got?
- 27:5830 seconds, stop the bomb going off, I called my bluff with
- 28:03railguns literally blind it but it's the one it's bare with me.
- 28:11That's my favorite. Favorite one, you Bear with me
- 28:13with a bag and see the path. We found me a share emotions as
- 28:17well. There's a chemistry this bad
- 28:23then when you are using it, okay, bitches?
- 28:26So yeah, absolutely honey, Russell tell ya.
- 28:41But that thing, you know, who, Who are you?
- 28:43Dr. It doesn't matter. Like like, you know, before the
- 28:49show had so much law back, you know, like when when it was
- 28:55simple, when it didn't matter who the doctor was.
- 28:58And now, of course it's got, you know, so Central to the show,
- 29:03but it's happier times, I think, you know, where maybe things
- 29:06don't come back, who know, is there hasn't been a lot in here
- 29:09from the old series? You never another thing I really
- 29:13Thrush Davis. I think it's like a detail about
- 29:15a character that we never forget.
- 29:17You would never ever say leader. You will always say like sailing
- 29:20with the y-yeah. Yeah, it's like other other day
- 29:24silence. All right.
- 29:27Yeah, so brilliant. It is the sign.
- 29:32So hang on. So so this controller woman
- 29:34right? Help me out.
- 29:35So she has pulled the doctor and that out because she wants to
- 29:38bring down the Daleks, right? She, she put them in the game.
- 29:43Ames in order to bring down the Daleks.
- 29:45Yeah yeah yeah. So she has a triangular wave
- 29:48isn't shoes. Yeah.
- 29:50Randy. He's stolen from from
- 29:54remembrance of the Daleks here to she was.
- 29:56He used as a child it was gross when when she gets things all
- 30:05over her body, do you know? Also the other thing that is
- 30:10just brilliant is the decision to not have people.
- 30:13We're space clothes in this. Like it's like you suggested to
- 30:18me that this would not be improved by the outside Panthers
- 30:21of the season of death. Yeah, yeah, it's so good.
- 30:25Like he's wearing, he's just wearing sort of a cheap shirt
- 30:30and a tie, you know, like it. And like, they're all just
- 30:35recognizable and like, this is absolutely 2005, you know?
- 30:40But it should be, I think, you know, It really just had this
- 30:44conversation before everyone else.
- 30:46Yeah. It's very 2005, isn't it?
- 30:53Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 30:57Of course they're going to get Barrowman.
- 30:58The biggest gun. Oh my look at the size of that
- 31:03thing honestly. So, the whole tone of the piece
- 31:09changes now, doesn't it, we've had all of our fun with reality
- 31:12TV and it's gotten Source, steadily more Insidious.
- 31:16Yeah, that's right, that's it. That's exactly. and now, it was,
- 31:21um, God, I'm sorry. Oh no.
- 31:25It's it's it welp. So we still have the game
- 31:29because we have to arrive late. But this is basically, I mean,
- 31:32where are we in this? We're like 26 minutes in or
- 31:36something. We've got 20 minutes or so to go
- 31:38little bit less than that. And, and the game thing is
- 31:44finished and now something else is happening and we've got no
- 31:47idea of what it is at this point.
- 31:49And the incredible thing is this looks like a sequel to the long
- 31:52game but it's absolutely A sequel to like heaps of stories,
- 31:56you know, here and everything comes together in this finale.
- 32:00In a way that I don't think we knew would be the sort of thing
- 32:04that would happen. Certainly, the long game and we
- 32:07should have known from the name. You know the well, I mean that's
- 32:11the cheek. You think about the logo?
- 32:12I render watch that Reiner if you gotta go.
- 32:20Yeah, is so blood Any good? He just shared a joke with her.
- 32:25Then right there, both laughing. And then he literally turned on
- 32:28Syria, so that off actually, it's all gone wrong.
- 32:31Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Good.
- 32:32Like, I think the first half of the Season, he felt his way in a
- 32:35little bit and there was a few moments of Comedy where I was a
- 32:38little bit. Unsure, the second half is
- 32:40season, he is on fire and it is a thing.
- 32:43We're both his daughter and David Tennant's doctor.
- 32:46Um, Mom asks, you know that there's some that their
- 32:50performances designed for a particular purpose.
- 32:53So there goes a garak's. Is that a garak's?
- 32:55I can't remember? Yeah.
- 33:00Rose is Roderick. It's a great idea.
- 33:03Strikes in this deadly. Danger of the weakest link.
- 33:06Yeah yeah. And then I fell this bit the
- 33:08minute, they sell the whole sequence where they're doing the
- 33:11last round of questions. There's a brilliantly and it's
- 33:17not just built up by roses performance which is like Billy
- 33:21is just astoundingly good in it. She is so properly terrified you
- 33:26know and like the cameras close up on her, she's not chic.
- 33:29She has to kind of control it. You know what I mean?
- 33:32Because you still get up anticipating the game so she's
- 33:34not sort of visibly, she's not freaking out but she's really
- 33:37super terrified and then the the questions, you know, like the
- 33:43questions sometimes they're ridiculous.
- 33:46And there's one question I think which is truly horrible and
- 33:50Russell like it. He's absolutely most vicious Hy
- 33:53youth. It's the one about which which
- 33:57Icelandic city hosted murder spree.
- 33:59Me too. I can't remember exactly who the
- 34:04game is called. Oh, I know somewhere in Iceland.
- 34:10I'll just say that. Yes, that's right, that's right.
- 34:15And then the other city in Iceland, but none of us have
- 34:19ever heard of, but I thought you got it right when she goes.
- 34:23Boom, the face of BOE. There's a question about Jackie.
- 34:29Ones like Teeth the direction of this as well, where the music
- 34:37they are there. And when it comes to the point,
- 34:39yeah, he's one and that love Simone is like, yeah, you love.
- 34:45Then the music gets louder and louder and louder.
- 34:47They actually say the commentary that Joe I heard what did music
- 34:51as loud as possible, when Julie Gardner.
- 34:52He had a few fights about because you can't hear the
- 34:54dialogue, but I think that's the point is they're supposed to be
- 34:57alone. Yeah.
- 34:59It's willing to take their there.
- 35:01Is that saying where you where, you know, they break in just
- 35:05after just as Rose is you know, disintegrate it.
- 35:09And then we don't hear their dialogue and we don't see what's
- 35:12going on. And then there's all these
- 35:14disjointed shots like the way that the doctors kind of
- 35:18bereavement and Jack Sprague meant is, you know, affects the
- 35:23way. The story is told is brilliant
- 35:25and like, nothing we've ever seen in Doctor, Who before The
- 35:30point I'm trying to make here is a no climax to a Weakest Link.
- 35:34Episode should be this will rip you.
- 35:36Yeah empty still upon he's famous for what?
- 35:43Just the way she says shoes and you're like there's a sense of
- 35:48geography as well of the special effect going up, the satellite.
- 35:52Yeah, they're dashing into the last.
- 35:55Well Russell, very frequently adds verticality to Stories,
- 35:59like it, new Earth, just as well through the hospital Jones.
- 36:05Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 36:06So that one. A long game?
- 36:08Yep. Absolutely.
- 36:11Because, yeah, because the studio is just a flat plane.
- 36:15And so if you want to create the sense of a world that breaks
- 36:19beyond the studio, but you're in the studio, is you create a
- 36:21bigger geography for them to Traverse mmm.
- 36:25So yeah, this is then we can Cars these days.
- 36:32No, no. And it doesn't, it doesn't
- 36:35Russell say that thing in the commentary where he says, that
- 36:41that, he thinks that kids wouldn't think she was dead that
- 36:45they were. Yeah, I understand he's called
- 36:48us and said, he watched it with his nephew or niece and they
- 36:51absolutely were convinced Larose know.
- 36:53Tim has gone well, and because you're introducing Joe joiners
- 36:56character as well. I clean with a wise there is a
- 36:59kind, Kind of, but they never going to kill her.
- 37:01Holy shit. That's good.
- 37:04Just never gonna kill this woman.
- 37:06Your floor mat. Yeah, she's cool.
- 37:09But man, she has a fantastic scene in the second episode.
- 37:12Yeah, yeah. She's really gonna love it when
- 37:14she quietly steps forward and says, yeah, I'm going to fight
- 37:18but in the moment she dies and she's like, you lie to me.
- 37:22How is some good? So we can hear the dialogue, but
- 37:25the dialogue is absolutely still be emphasized by the noise.
- 37:29Like we know Not supposed to and he can because he's not
- 37:32listening. We don't hear the dialogue
- 37:34properly. You know, the guy who captures
- 37:36him, you know, like he's talking but he's not listening at all.
- 37:41And so, this whole thing Fades into this sort of and like some
- 37:44time passes, look how distant and lonely the game station
- 37:47looks, you know, in the exterior shot and I think this prison
- 37:51just looks incredible. I really love the Lions very
- 37:54Stark and it's a bit violent. Is there only it's completely
- 37:57different from where we've been And like, like I think these are
- 38:01just Studio Flats but they recently convincing as metal and
- 38:05certainly the little like the metal Grille on.
- 38:07The thing just adds a kind of level of realism to it that you
- 38:10don't get on. I love it.
- 38:12When X I'm just going right? Let's do it and then they just
- 38:15beat him. Yeah.
- 38:16And he's like, he's like And look, the lunar penal, colony,
- 38:21still operating and you never get a trial and you don't get to
- 38:25leave ever. It's, I was a turn in a second
- 38:29and I, oh my God. Yeah, trouble, they're coming
- 38:30with guns. You know.
- 38:33Yeah, we've with the controller in the background.
- 38:37That's extraordinary. I'm just really drawn to that
- 38:43visual. It's really good, isn't it?
- 38:46Yeah, yeah. And they're watching it happen.
- 38:51So they waiting for him to arrive and the lift again.
- 38:58Yeah. I mean least they said it's
- 39:01because he's learned the story, hasn't he?
- 39:05You know like it reusing the sets from parking space in
- 39:10Revenge of the Cyberman and so he deliberately is sets, you
- 39:17know, sets, two stories aboard, the satellite and just reuses
- 39:20the sets and redress is them and the sets are not massively sort
- 39:24of impressive or anything. But just the A way that they lit
- 39:27and dressed on stuff. They look great.
- 39:29Yeah, I think this is one story where you just so absorbed in
- 39:34the action. Really my hair.
- 39:36Yeah, I'm not really looking at the set of I want with your arm,
- 39:38just so incredible. But like they say tonight I
- 39:43pointed out series one and everyone was how I have doctors
- 39:46got an unlimited budget. Of course it didn't it was still
- 39:50yeah. Yeah.
- 39:51To use all the old tricks. They've definitely, of course,
- 39:55as you always say better at making television.
- 39:57Yeah, yeah. And that's the thing.
- 39:59And that's that's very simple to over there where John Barrowman
- 40:04goes from that set to the White sets of the TARDIS set.
- 40:08It's like yeah, he's just gone through three Resets he goes in
- 40:12a space of 2 so it's absolutely cells.
- 40:16The Tardis is a space to like as a sort of strange space, you
- 40:20know, like he like you're right. He goes through that tiny set
- 40:24the you know, the dark set that white set.
- 40:26And now he is and we get a little bit of roses jacket and
- 40:31staff. We just hearing a lot of jokes,
- 40:35you've got no right to wear it with that, you know, with that
- 40:40by saying that isn't it you know, you just don't think that
- 40:43characters had white redeems well even though she stays 25.
- 40:48Yeah, yeah. Like we tried wewe like her
- 40:51because she's got that sort of romance they do with the up
- 40:54that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:56But the other really funny thing, I think, is to that, the
- 40:59doctor is absolutely ferociously.
- 41:01Angry, he goes up. A big fucking gun up to the, you
- 41:05know, the up to the top floor and then why ask about the first
- 41:09thing he does is throw the gun to the guy, you know.
- 41:13Davies has been watching worries that the Deep hasn't he given
- 41:16away the gun? Yeah, me just sort of throws it.
- 41:20Throws it to. It's so good and it rides for
- 41:25ages. It control?
- 41:27Yep. Yeah, I think so.
- 41:32She's so good to isn't she? And look so strange.
- 41:37I think that is that Anaheim. Oh, I don't know.
- 41:42Well, I don't know and I hope she's not a lot of big finish
- 41:45work. You probably would do okay.
- 41:47Oh no, I think I do hope. I know, I know how it was the
- 41:50cat person in novice hame. No, novice hame.
- 41:54Yeah, yeah, yeah. So when you say yes, you're very
- 41:58good. I will have a look at the
- 42:04closing credits, sometimes when you see the graphics, you know,
- 42:06you can tell this is what 20 years ago.
- 42:09Yeah, yeah yeah yeah, yeah. But I think it still looks good
- 42:12and I think you know, like it's better to look timely when your
- 42:15first broadcast because you are always going to look dated no
- 42:18matter how you know future you try and look.
- 42:22So I think you may as well make it as contemporary and
- 42:24accessible as possible. You've got normal people
- 42:27watching this you know you don't want space people on television
- 42:30you want normal people that they can recognize as TV people.
- 42:34You know it was always that sort of thing when when I was a kid
- 42:37and my mother would see what I was watching TV.
- 42:39Should we go? What, how the hell can this?
- 42:41Even mean anything to you? There's old Robert people and
- 42:44space people and stuff. And these look at Joe join and
- 42:48doing that little thing with her foot when she gets disintegrated
- 42:51and she's doing the same thing when she reappears.
- 42:53Yeah. Yeah, very, it looks sweet as he
- 42:56was up. Makes her look like a kid, you
- 42:58know, like a nervous little kid. It's so good.
- 43:02But you know, what? When I first watched this, I
- 43:04have the garlic heartbeat. Yeah, I've made you say, it
- 43:09isn't It-it's been you have a govt shot and you're like yes,
- 43:13yeah, yeah, yeah. And we like, I don't think we
- 43:17heard the POV shot. We didn't hear that that that
- 43:22that noise the noise and I think it's just delightful.
- 43:27I did he ever had it? Okay, I think it's incredible.
- 43:30The the new shows just adopted that and it regularly uses it
- 43:33for the dialects. I think it's great and this is
- 43:35the first time we do it. Hey guys, I kind of I thought I
- 43:40caught by yeah, it's my ringtone.
- 43:45Oh, I love about these is when they kill the controller.
- 43:48This whole scene is just her talking.
- 43:49They don't say exterminate all screaming - yeah.
- 43:53Yeah, yeah. All the more scary for it.
- 43:57Yeah, it's really amazing, isn't it?
- 43:59It's really scary. It's like a pig's don't through
- 44:03her. Yeah, yeah yeah.
- 44:05I'm really love the design of the game station as well.
- 44:08It's not like 50. Yeah.
- 44:10Yeah it looks incredible in here.
- 44:11It's very heart, spinning different things but there's
- 44:15also this one has lots more spiky antennas and stuff on it.
- 44:19I think it's cute but the doctors always try to stop Jack
- 44:22from flirt with everybody as well.
- 44:30The Cliffhanger that's coming up is imminent.
- 44:31So I'm going to quickly talk about it now.
- 44:35It's one of those rare times where X but the tops are a
- 44:38dangerous. The doctor saying I'm coming for
- 44:40you. I think it's an incredible
- 44:42Cliffhanger. It's really, really properly
- 44:44good and it isn't, how will the doctor get out of this?
- 44:47But what the hell? Well, it kind of is its, but it
- 44:50is. What the hell will the doctor do
- 44:51next? I think it's unbelievably great.
- 44:55One of our absolute How will the Daleks get out of this one?
- 44:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, look, I think it's I think
- 45:02it's, you know, absolutely one of the best, you know, one of
- 45:07the very best Cliffhangers in the show's history like you know
- 45:10maybe instead to the meal, they've got to be retro sources.
- 45:14All right. Yeah yeah yeah this so good
- 45:19aren't they, you know, I have behind it.
- 45:24Yeah, yeah, yeah, unbelievable. So great.
- 45:27I think the other Cliffhanger that's like that is the Matt
- 45:31Smith. There's one thing.
- 45:33You don't put in a trap Cliffhanger for time of angels
- 45:39where she gives the people are absolutely incredible.
- 45:42And he fires the gun and you don't know what he's doing.
- 45:46How about the addition of granddaughter?
- 45:48But I mean, yes, that's right. Please sit here.
- 45:53He finds his way in the show, the for the second time and
- 45:57space. When he sees them.
- 45:59Yeah, yeah. No, it's not.
- 46:02I know. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:07It's absolutely what I was saying before, it's an act, it's
- 46:10a mask. All of the, you know,
- 46:12lightheartedness is he's hiding this.
- 46:16What you can see on his face now, I'm not sure we'd seen a
- 46:23performance, this intense by, I like to play the doctor before.
- 46:27No. No, but I'd like, I think we
- 46:30have seen kids else. It seems a.
- 46:35Yeah, well, I mean, I think, you know, just about everyone has
- 46:39as, you know, like, you know, like, I think Matt Smith can be
- 46:44incredible as well. Like, you know, tenant for all
- 46:48of his teeth and hair. Can you know, deliver something
- 46:52pretty incredible? I mean, these becomes an acting
- 46:56role in a way where, you know, like whenever there's a new
- 47:00doctor, and people say, oh, it'll be mr.
- 47:02Blobby or it'll be, you know, Graham Norton or something and
- 47:05it could Paradise. Yeah.
- 47:07Yeah. Yeah, instead of, being a proper
- 47:09actor, like Christopher Eccleston and like it had never
- 47:12been a lot. It's, you know, job for a light
- 47:14entertainment actor, anyway. But but you know, ankle certain
- 47:18really kind of turned Turns it into a proper acting role.
- 47:22Remember that moment where he cries like, he tears are again
- 47:26but the world in end of the world and I just think fuck you
- 47:30know when have I ever ever been you know invited to think about
- 47:34what the doctor is like feeling emotionally.
- 47:37Look I never find the end of last week when they're on the
- 47:40High Street and he's just awesome here.
- 47:45This is so different from what we had before.
- 47:49And say, look at we're doing the next week thing.
- 47:52And like, just like those special effects are so
- 47:56incredible, like, the way that they can now just have, you
- 48:00know, they have half a million dollars in those sources and,
- 48:03like, rather than talking about it rather than just or, you
- 48:07know, the little roley can things plaque with the balance.
- 48:18It's good and I think the next episode is if anything better,
- 48:25it's really something. Do you think they managed to
- 48:32best? But at that as a knows me
- 48:35because I actually think in pretty much every season the
- 48:39penultimate episode is offer better than the male.
- 48:42Yeah, I think yeah the drums is bad last of the timelords stolid
- 48:46Earth bests. Exams.
- 48:50And all right, all right, to the Big Bang.
- 48:53Yeah, Yeah, I think like of Russell's, I don't know.
- 48:58Like, I like all of Russell's finales even the season 31 and
- 49:06like, I recognized her things that don't work in the city, you
- 49:09know, in the season 3 finale. But I still think it's fantastic
- 49:12and it's got John. See him and you know the
- 49:14Cliffhanger 2 episode 12 is unbelievably great.
- 49:19Isn't it? I mean, just so good.
- 49:22You know, is that worries her? So this quoting the Bible says
- 49:25it and it's yeah. Yeah.
- 49:28You know like it's and then the opening of season 13 with see
- 49:32the Scissor Sisters song of a doctor in the wheelchair and
- 49:35stuff and like the doctor like the master is so fun and so
- 49:40funny and so incredibly good, you know, in that and it's like
- 49:44this before. Show is Dreadful, but the thing
- 49:50is, you know, like the threat that the mouse Troy's poses
- 49:54isn't to the world of the show. It's to our world, he threatens
- 49:59to become more entertaining than the doctor, and both John simm
- 50:03and Michelle Gomez manage that. And I think Delgado manages it
- 50:07in cause vac sauce and wear heels.
- 50:10My we do it as well. Yeah.
- 50:12Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:13That's right. But you're ever win this season
- 50:143 DVD box set came out and like one side of the box.
- 50:18Is it just has, you know, Josie motto is, you know, it's like
- 50:22he's taking over as star of the show and you know, like he's a
- 50:26credible star of the show because he done, you know, life
- 50:28on Mars and stuff. So, you know, we know David
- 50:32Tennant is generous enough Max of just go.
- 50:34Well, yeah, he's still quite as insecure as Jon Pertwee.
- 50:41Yeah, I like that one place and ended in quite another.
- 50:45Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I did.
- 50:48Really did. Wow, we're about to see what I
- 50:53consider to be the darkest. Portrayal of the Daleks.
- 50:58Yeah, let me see a doctor. Who should we hop across and
- 51:02watch it? Yeah, I think so.
- 51:05Okay.
