Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily Abadi here bringing you another installment of
- 0:22Speaker 1: five Minute Friday this week.
- 0:27Speaker 2: It's been a week.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Why do I keep saying that once Friday rolls around,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I'm going to be completely transparent with you. I'm definitely
- 0:34Speaker 1: recording this later than I would like to be. Things
- 0:39Speaker 1: have been seemingly non stop and taxing and a lot.
- 0:46Speaker 2: You know.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I recorded the Hurdle session this week talking about how
- 0:51Speaker 1: to build a social media presence, and at the end
- 0:54Speaker 1: of the session, one of the participants, she said, when
- 0:57Speaker 1: I asked about their biggest takeaways, she shared, I guess
- 1:01Speaker 1: I never realized how much of a responsibility it really
- 1:06Speaker 1: is to cultivate community and show up for community. And
- 1:10Speaker 1: that's really how I feel on weeks like this week,
- 1:13Speaker 1: weeks when there's tough stuff going on in the news cycle,
- 1:18Speaker 1: I know that the people that I care about, my
- 1:23Speaker 1: community here on Hurdle, you guys, are feeling some kind
- 1:26Speaker 1: of way.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I want to show up for you.
- 1:28Speaker 1: It's hard when I don't have all of the right
- 1:30Speaker 1: things to say, and so all I guess I am
- 1:33Speaker 1: saying by putting all this out into the universe is
- 1:36Speaker 1: that I hear you. I want to create space for you.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I will continue to do it in the best way
- 1:43Speaker 1: that I know possible. And if there is ever anything
- 1:46Speaker 1: that I can do for you, any way that I
- 1:48Speaker 1: can help you, I promise that I will do my
- 1:51Speaker 1: best to do that. Of course, if you need me,
- 1:54Speaker 1: I'm always available over social media, within reason at Emily
- 1:59Speaker 1: Evadi at Hurdle podcast and via email at Emily at
- 2:03Speaker 1: Hurdle dot us for five Minute Friday this week. Before
- 2:07Speaker 1: I get to today's episode, I do want to take a
- 2:09Speaker 1: moment to give some love to my friends at Beam,
- 2:12Speaker 1: the sponsor of five Minute Friday this week. They are
- 2:14Speaker 1: a Boston based CBD company that is making waves in
- 2:19Speaker 1: the wellness industry by offering up products that combine THHC
- 2:23Speaker 1: free CBD with other high quality ingredients. My absolute favorite
- 2:30Speaker 1: product lately is their focus capsules. I have been on
- 2:34Speaker 1: a focus capsule Tangent. I don't even know if that
- 2:38Speaker 1: makes sense, but I started taking them last week and
- 2:42Speaker 1: I just feel more capable once I reach for them.
- 2:46Speaker 1: After I have my morning coffee, it's go time. It's
- 2:49Speaker 1: like morning coffee, athletic greens, Focus capsules. Let's do this.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Who doesn't want to feel more homed in on their
- 2:58Speaker 1: to do list. Am I right, get your products today

- 3:17Speaker 1: is beam TLC dot com b e A m TLC
- 3:22Speaker 1: dot com. Use the code hurdle I checkout for fifteen
- 3:25Speaker 1: percent off today. I want to focus on something that
- 3:28Speaker 1: brings me a lot of joy. I know I've mentioned
- 3:31Speaker 1: here on the show before that I go to track
- 3:33Speaker 1: practice on Tuesdays, which is kind of funny when I
- 3:38Speaker 1: really think about it, only because Emily back in high school,
- 3:42Speaker 1: Emily back in two thousand and three, she didn't make
- 3:45Speaker 1: the JV volleyball team because she couldn't run a mile
- 3:48Speaker 1: in under ten minutes. So if at the time you
- 3:50Speaker 1: were to tell her that one day she would quote
- 3:52Speaker 1: unquote belong to a track team, she would think you
- 3:56Speaker 1: were absolutely nuts. I mean, in high school, I was
- 3:59Speaker 1: in the musicals. I was in a Jewish youth group. Okay,
- 4:04Speaker 1: that's an understatement. I was the president of my region
- 4:08Speaker 1: for the Jewish youth group. Yeah, I was not a runner.
- 4:13Speaker 1: But back to the present, I will start with this.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I was really really hesitant to join the track club.
- 4:19Speaker 1: There was a lot of lingering doubt. I've been a
- 4:23Speaker 1: runner for quite some time now, over ten years, and
- 4:27Speaker 1: over the years I've done a lot of that alone.
- 4:30Speaker 1: It wasn't until about the last two or three years
- 4:33Speaker 1: of living in New York City, which is filled with
- 4:37Speaker 1: so many runners in such a vibrant running community, that
- 4:40Speaker 1: I even kind of opened myself up to the idea
- 4:43Speaker 1: of really running with people that I didn't know. Well,
- 4:47Speaker 1: that's a phrase that sounds so weird and wake of
- 4:49Speaker 1: what's going on in the world today. But I was
- 4:52Speaker 1: hesitant to join this track club because I was scared
- 4:54Speaker 1: to run with other people, because I was insecure about
- 4:57Speaker 1: not being quote unquote good enough, and I was also
- 4:59Speaker 1: nervous about maybe not fitting in, knowing that from my
- 5:04Speaker 1: knowledge of the community, there were definitely some, you know,
- 5:07Speaker 1: really great friend groups and great people that were around,
- 5:10Speaker 1: but these were all pre existing relationships that I wasn't
- 5:13Speaker 1: really a part of. With some encouragement from the friends
- 5:18Speaker 1: that I had made, which happened to be a part
- 5:20Speaker 1: of this track club of the running community. I literally
- 5:24Speaker 1: decided to pay my dues and join, and things were
- 5:29Speaker 1: definitely a little rough at first, you know. I joined
- 5:31Speaker 1: for the twenty twenty year, and twenty twenty has been
- 5:35Speaker 1: an interesting time to join a quote unquote team sport
- 5:39Speaker 1: of sorts, and so practices weren't happening as they were
- 5:43Speaker 1: supposed to. And finally recently things kind of got back
- 5:48Speaker 1: into a routine, of course, in a safe and socially
- 5:53Speaker 1: distant way, and we're all wearing masks and all this stuff.
- 5:55Speaker 1: But track practice on Tuesdays has become one one of
- 6:00Speaker 1: my favorite things. And it's interesting because the doubts that
- 6:03Speaker 1: I had back at the end of twenty nineteen before
- 6:06Speaker 1: I paid my dues and I was like, I'm going
- 6:07Speaker 1: to do this, I don't feel those anymore.
- 6:10Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:11Speaker 1: I'm excited for this. I feel strong when I'm at
- 6:13Speaker 1: the track, I feel amped. I feel like Tuesday is
- 6:17Speaker 1: my favorite day of the week. And I've got this
- 6:20Speaker 1: whole routine that surrounds Tuesdays. I wake up at five forty,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I journal, I drink an espresso, I take my bike
- 6:27Speaker 1: off of the wall, and I ride downtown from Point
- 6:31Speaker 1: A to Point b and I run with my small
- 6:33Speaker 1: group which is like four to six people, and again
- 6:35Speaker 1: we all wear our masks and we push each other,
- 6:38Speaker 1: and it just I like exhale thinking about this because
- 6:42Speaker 1: at the track, like all of the other stuff, it
- 6:45Speaker 1: just feels like it doesn't matter. It feels like we
- 6:47Speaker 1: can focus on the task at hand.
- 6:49Speaker 2: All right.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Actually, let me rephrase that a little bit. Other things
- 6:52Speaker 1: matter at the track, but the track is my opportunity
- 6:56Speaker 1: to focus.
- 6:57Speaker 2: On the run. That's better.
- 6:59Speaker 1: I mean, there I can let go of things at
- 7:01Speaker 1: least for just a little bit, and use my frustrations
- 7:05Speaker 1: to my advantage and throw myself into the work and
- 7:08Speaker 1: just be.
- 7:12Speaker 2: At the track.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I show up in the moment and I try really hard,
- 7:17Speaker 1: and I always go back to this saying that I
- 7:19Speaker 1: say to myself all the time. It's that all it
- 7:22Speaker 1: takes is all you've got. And there are definitely, week
- 7:25Speaker 1: after week there are reps that I'm just like, I
- 7:27Speaker 1: don't know if I can do this anymore, But week
- 7:29Speaker 1: after week I show myself and I prove to myself
- 7:32Speaker 1: time and time again.
- 7:33Speaker 2: That I can, And man, that's invigorating.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Last week, after practice, I went to the place that
- 7:40Speaker 1: I usually go to to have a banana peanut butter
- 7:44Speaker 1: cacao nib muffin that's fresh baked, it's just as good
- 7:47Speaker 1: as it sounds, and hot coffee, and I sit there
- 7:50Speaker 1: and I enjoy it and I just take some time.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And so last week I was sitting there thinking about
- 7:56Speaker 1: my routine and thinking about how crazy it is that
- 8:01Speaker 1: I almost stood in my own way to just have
- 8:04Speaker 1: this thing in my life that I now appreciate so much,
- 8:08Speaker 1: And like, how many things are there in our lives
- 8:12Speaker 1: that we almost prevent ourselves from taking advantage of or
- 8:15Speaker 1: going after, just because maybe we are scared, we're unsure,
- 8:21Speaker 1: we don't feel comfortable about this idea of the unknown.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I think about like how I would feel.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I mean, I obviously wouldn't know exactly what I'm missing
- 8:30Speaker 1: out on, but how much it would suck to miss
- 8:33Speaker 1: out on this experience, this community, the endorphins, the camaraderie,
- 8:39Speaker 1: the confidence, like all of this goodness, the belief that
- 8:44Speaker 1: I myself am good as I am and that I
- 8:48Speaker 1: can do hard things. And so I'm proud of myself
- 8:53Speaker 1: for giving this a go, for continuing to show up,
- 8:57Speaker 1: for being willing to put myself out there. And just
- 9:00Speaker 1: knowing that I I'm enough. So my prompt for you
- 9:04Speaker 1: this week, when was the last time you had to
- 9:07Speaker 1: give yourself a pep talk to do something? And how
- 9:11Speaker 1: did it go? Again, when was the last time you
- 9:14Speaker 1: had to give yourself a pep talk to do something?
- 9:17Speaker 1: And how did it go? Highlights of the week. All
- 9:20Speaker 1: of the details to this stuff will be found in
- 9:23Speaker 1: the show notes, including links and such. Watch The Atlantic
- 9:29Speaker 1: and land Rover present John Mayer Goes Outside. It's kind
- 9:33Speaker 1: of as silly as it sounds. I tbh listen to
- 9:37Speaker 1: John Mayer Radio on Pandora way more than I should
- 9:41Speaker 1: admit in a public forum. I just I've always loved
- 9:45Speaker 1: John Mayer. He's from Fairfield County, Connecticut. I'm from Fairfield County, Connecticut.
- 9:49Speaker 1: He I think is hilarious. He's uber talented, not just
- 9:53Speaker 1: as a singer but also a songwriter and as a performer,
- 9:56Speaker 1: a guitarist, etc. And I just love his like wit
- 10:00Speaker 1: and sarcasm and just overall being. And so in this video,
- 10:05Speaker 1: they literally like PLoP John Mayer in the middle of
- 10:08Speaker 1: the woods and it's hilarious and it's just it's just
- 10:12Speaker 1: worth the watch. Read what your favorite teen heart throbs
- 10:17Speaker 1: look like now I know you're welcome. Basically, my commentary
- 10:23Speaker 1: on this article that was published on Marie Claire is basically,
- 10:28Speaker 1: when you get older, is it that these men actually
- 10:31Speaker 1: become more attractive or is it because that I am older?
- 10:35Speaker 1: I think they are sexier at this age. I just
- 10:37Speaker 1: want to ask this question. I mean, you have to
- 10:39Speaker 1: look at these side by side photos. They're going to uh,
- 10:43Speaker 1: They're gonna blow your mind. Listen, massay Go, I think
- 10:47Speaker 1: I'm saying that right. My friend recently turned me on
- 10:50Speaker 1: to this artist, and the way that he incorporates the
- 10:53Speaker 1: saxophone into a lot of his stuff is truly such
- 10:56Speaker 1: a vibe. I would suggest, from a track perspective, start
- 11:01Speaker 1: with the King's Rant Passport and to Dow and let
- 11:05Speaker 1: me know what you think. Also, if you're not subscribed
- 11:08Speaker 1: to the Weekly Hurdle, definitely do so by clicking over
- 11:11Speaker 1: to the show notes over there. Every week I'm giving
- 11:14Speaker 1: different active wear and gear suggestions per the requests that
- 11:18Speaker 1: I'm getting the most in my direct messages over on Instagram.
- 11:22Speaker 1: This week, I'm chatting fall cycling gear. Just because it's
- 11:25Speaker 1: getting a little chillier outside doesn't mean you have to
- 11:28Speaker 1: get off the bike. I'm offering up the items that
- 11:31Speaker 1: I myself am using in my regular rotation.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Right now, and I know I have a hunch.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I think I know you guys well enough that you're
- 11:38Speaker 1: going to like this stuff as well.
- 11:40Speaker 2: And that's it for this week.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Short and sweet as always at Emily a Body at
- 11:46Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast, another Hurdle conquered.
