Transcript
- 0:00Yeah. Cool, So I'm I played guitar in very tomorrow. We are
- 0:05coming out to your end in end of August for a run across Australia with
- 0:10Make Them Suffer. It's also got Spie and Bloom on the tour as well.
- 0:15Yeah, we're really looking forward to it, right cool. Thanks for
- 0:18joining us today, Matte. Yeah, nobody's as you say, very tomorrow
- 0:22and return to Australia for a run of shows. We'd make them stuff off
- 0:25of their stuff off like ever Australia or kicking off in Brisbane on August thirtieth,
- 0:30going through Newcastle, said Nee Melbourne Adelaide finish his pre mental on September
- 0:33seventh flight. You're only adly last year, bro, Like have you even
- 0:36unpacked from last time? It's pretty quick, yeah, just about. Yeah.
- 0:41It's funny because we actually got I think we got offered this tour when
- 0:46we were in Australia last year, so we were like out there doing that
- 0:50tour and like in the middle of that tour they sort of offer came through.
- 0:53Obviously didn't get announced until much later, but yeah, it was.
- 0:57We're just happy to be back. It's a really good time, you know,
- 1:00just saying before, like, I'm not a huge fan of a flying
- 1:03so it's like quite a big thing for me to go so far away from
- 1:07home. But it's last year was the first time I went to Australia and
- 1:11it was such a good time that it's definitely worth any of the anxiety I
- 1:15get when I fly out there. Let's I've read on that a bit,
- 1:19bro Like it's so and it's such such a pain for you. So what
- 1:22is it about Australia that makes you sort of shove them and come back so
- 1:26quick, like feasibly you could not come back for a couple of years and
- 1:29peopleould understand. Yeah, it's just it's just I think the people, the
- 1:36environment, and it's just there's just so much novelty about it that's just really
- 1:41beautiful. You know. It's just like driving through like the we had some
- 1:44very very long drives on that tour, you know, like ten hour twelve
- 1:47hour drives, you know, and because you're just driving through like Australian fields
- 1:51and at no point does it really looked like England. It just has that
- 1:55novelty of just being like this is really cool, like we're in Australia.
- 1:59Like you then you see a kangaroo on the side of the road and you're
- 2:01just like, wow, that's who was on the back of your album,
- 2:07the Seventh Son that was released around the same time. So it's also a
- 2:12sign of just how good that album was. The fact that you can come
- 2:15to a country, a foreign country twice on the one album cycled Yeah,
- 2:19I hope. So yeah. I mean, we were playing a lot of
- 2:21the album on that tour, and it seems to go down really well.
- 2:23You know. It's it's a majority of our sett list is newer stuff now,
- 2:27which is cool. Obviously we've always got time for the old stuff and
- 2:30we'll always play some of some of the older songs. But yeah, it
- 2:34seems to have been received really well, which is really really cool, you
- 2:37know. It just it felt really special when we were out there before,
- 2:39especially because we were like headlining shows and you know, we upgraded a couple
- 2:43of the venues and then sold them out, which was really unexpected for us.
- 2:46So we're just really excited to come out and play to even more people
- 2:50because obviously these these shows are much bigger. We've made themselve aheadlining them.
- 2:54It's a very just a very very cool opportunity that we're super happy to be
- 2:59on board with. The seventh Son was an album. Like a lot of
- 3:04focus around that album was the fact that he was shaping a new sound moving
- 3:07forward for the band. So from looking back on it now after you've done,
- 3:09I like it didn't work you did you sort of go away want to
- 3:14go music club? Yeah? I think so. It just I think it
- 3:17was an amalgamation of different influences from having it was the first album which had
- 3:25multiple sort of songwriters on it, as in people bringing demos to the band
- 3:30because previously Dawson was Dawson the other guitarists in the band was the one who
- 3:35would write all the music, so he would go away and write his demos
- 3:38and obviously he'd have a little bit of input from the other guys, but
- 3:40it was from him that was actually sitting down and churning out the demos.
- 3:45But at this time around, we've got Tom and I who also had demos
- 3:47to the table, and like, we've been fortunate enough that the guys have
- 3:51been receptive to those, you know, to some of the songs that we've
- 3:54written and then fleshing those out. So I think it's just a case of
- 3:59the sound maybe being a bit different is obviously coming from Tom having a different
- 4:03voice to what was previously in the band, and obviously those different influences coming
- 4:08from you know, several different people at this point. And the seven Son
- 4:13was also your first album with the band made out to join in twenty twenty
- 4:16one, So how was that experience for you? Yeah, very cool.
- 4:20The guys have just been so welcoming of me and Tom. You know,
- 4:25it's it's I think they've just appreciated in you a rejuvenated I guess, workflow
- 4:30and work environment, I guess. And yeah, I mean when I joined
- 4:36the band, I certainly wasn't expecting to be writing music or contributing in that
- 4:41way really, because I just was kind of like, oh, I'll leave
- 4:43that to you sort of thing. And it's very nerve wracking thing to send
- 4:46demos through. Like I, if I write a demo, I don't usually
- 4:50send it through to everyone. I usually just send it to Dawson Birds and
- 4:55he's like my filter and if he really likes it, then and we'll try
- 4:59and put vocals in it and then it goes around like that. But I'm
- 5:00not like sending a demo into the group chat and then just waiting for everyone
- 5:05to listen to it. It's just terrifying. Yeah, definitely, it's definitely
- 5:11gotten better since we especially as we're like into the second album that we've done
- 5:15together now, but it's still very a nerve wracking thing. Definitely. And
- 5:20how was it initially? Bit when you came in, like you've come into
- 5:24a band, it's already established, it's already got established sound, I guess,
- 5:27an established band, But it's like, was there any extra pressure on
- 5:30you coming into that as opposed to you if you've sort of started something yourself
- 5:33you're reckon? Yeah, definitely, I'd say this. Obviously, there's always
- 5:40going to be people that compare it to how it was before, and there's
- 5:42always gonna be people that prefer it how it was before, and that's completely
- 5:44fine, Like, no problem with that at all. It's just absolutely given.
- 5:49So Yeah, I just think we're we're just like, we're just along
- 5:54for the ride, basically, That's all I can say. Yeah, Bag
- 6:00and Suffer also invited out Spike and Bloom for the cho as you say,
- 6:03like, do you know much about those bands? Do before a lot of
- 6:06this? Do you go and do research on the bands or do you rather
- 6:09wait and see them live? Yeah, I definitely do. I'll always check
- 6:12out bands before we go out. I'm watchure In my Spider band, who
- 6:16I've seen doing like touring. They've done some good touring over in the UK.
- 6:19I think they're from America and might be wrong and Bloom my Believer from
- 6:23Australia if that's if I if I'm right with that, And again i've seen
- 6:27them. I think they're out with Plaris at the moment. So these are
- 6:30bands I obviously see like on tour posters and I've seen them on social media
- 6:33occasionally. But yeah, I'll definitely be checking them out before we go on
- 6:36tour them. Yeah. So for the benefit of those who missed you guys
- 6:41when you were out of here last year, may like tell us what we
- 6:43can expect from Barry Tomorrow Live. I mean, we try and bring the
- 6:47high end show as much as we can. It's we like to have fun
- 6:53as well, you know, it's not all like serious, you know,
- 6:56I guess. Yeah, we just try and bring like a good spread of
- 7:00what we can fit into the set list of the of the back catalog,
- 7:04I guess, of new and old stuff and yeah, We're just like a
- 7:10lot of Clark crowd participation, you know, just over the years. You
- 7:14know, we don't sit down and go, right, here's a song that
- 7:15we're going to do this in, or here's a song that we're going to
- 7:17tell people to jump in or whatever. It just becomes this thing where as
- 7:21you as you play songs and over and over and over again, you go,
- 7:26this one's good for this, this one's good for that. So it's
- 7:28a good opportunity to do this. And I think we've kind of honed in
- 7:30a lot of the set in that respect of songs that are like staples of
- 7:33the set list and keeping the energy up as much as we can basically travel
- 7:41around the world, make you notice the different parts of the world, like
- 7:45different songs. In s you have to change it up much from Cotron.
- 7:50Yeah, to an extent, like when we did America last year, we've
- 7:55sort of added in some old, old songs that we hadn't played for a
- 7:58while because we've been touring Europe and we'd sort of exhausted them in Europe a
- 8:01little bit. But because we and we did the same thing with Australia actually
- 8:07because we obviously haven't been in those markets as much we're like, oh this,
- 8:09these crowds haven't heard this old song, and it's quite quite a good
- 8:11old song to add that one in sort of thing. So things that that
- 8:15definitely come into play. But ultimately it just comes down to what you can
- 8:18sort of fit into your whatever hour, whether you've got an hour, forty
- 8:22five minutes or whatever, and just picking at the more. Unfortunately, the
- 8:28more songs you release, the more difficulty gets to fig to figure out,
- 8:31like, you know, because if you release a single, obviously you have
- 8:33to add that in and you want to play that live, so that cuts
- 8:37one old song out, which is a shame obviously to do. I think
- 8:41that's the benefit of headlining is for us headlining, we can sort of play
- 8:46the longest that we'd ever play for, you know, but with the support
- 8:48set it's definitely a lot more difficult to hone that exactly. Yeah, thanks
- 8:58very much A few time. Had been the pleasure speaking with you very back
- 9:03in Australia. From August the thirtieth, we make them Suffers, Spiked and
- 9:05Bloon. There's still a couple of tikets left, so get amongst it what you had
