[upbeat rock music] All right. All right.
0:16
That catchy tan tune from Road opening the show here. Full Spectrum Cycling, show number 34. 3-4. 3-4. Yeah. It's a good time [laughs]. Yeah, one, yeah, one more show, we leave the demographic.
0:30
Isn't that, like, near beer? [laughs] Isn't that 24 beer? 3-2, man. Then you're not the 18 to 20, 18 to 35 demographic. No, three, four time on your, uh, on your- Come on.
0:38
That's what it is, three, four time on your music. Right? The number. Uh, it's, uh, Sven here. We got JK. Hello, hello, hello. Josh. Hi, there. Guest, guest Josh today in the studio here.
0:48
Brought his fancy electric bike we'll probably talk about a little bit later, and, uh, T-Burger. Hola. Holy mackerel, was it cold out this week. Jesus Christ. [laughs] Too early. Too early.
1:00
Yeah, you know it's coming, but- Too soon It doesn't need to be right now. No. You don't have to hasten it. Uh- It's- This is February weather. Look at all- Oh, yeah... look at all that new- No, but-...
1:10
45 North stuff on the wall just in case you guys are cold over there. Yeah. Ooh. Hey.
1:16
Yep, got lots of, lots of stuff for your head, hands, and feet, 'cause those are the, those are the three areas that require the most attention when you're riding in the cold.
1:24
So Therese, she came in a day too early [laughs] apparently to buy her gloves. [laughs] We still love you. Uh, yeah, besides the cold. I don't know. So Zeno and I did a pretty good ride on Monday in the, in the snow.
1:37
That looked almost Photoshopped, like, from a different year, but- Nope. Nope. I was right down at Bradford Beach. Just asking. Yep. Hey. Hey. Pulling wheelies. [laughs] Pulling wheelies.
1:48
Yep, Bradford Beach, baby, and- I, A, it- It was a, it was a day when the wind was coming off the lake, so there was tons of waves. Oh, sure.
1:55
And it was really changing the shoreline much different than, uh, the normal beach there, which is still, there's still sand for the- It's still a little beach... quarter mile of- Yeah...
2:03
sand that there is, but- You just do it 10 times. Well, it was pretty soft in some spots and frozen in others, so it's fun trying to find the right line through it.
2:11
Did some trail riding and [clanking sound] did some, uh, Hooligan stopping. Nice. Very cool. What'd you have at Hooligan? Just curious. Uh, they had a pizza burger on special, so.
2:22
Their macaroni and cheese is outstanding. Oh, I love- Pizza burger... Better Butterburger. Yeah, that's usually my go-to, for sure. Yeah. If anybody- It is...
2:30
go to Hooligans, if you're visiting Milwaukee and you want Hooligans- It's either Hooli burger or the Butterburger. No, I disagree with that. One or two. The- The, uh- Monterey chicken sandwich- I know you-...
2:38
or a Hooli burger [laughs]... I know you disagree, but- The blue cheese- What about the ostrich burger? They don't have the ostrich burger on the menu anymore, so I get the, um, what- Bison...
2:45
the buffalo blue cheese macaroni and cheese. They got a bison burger. So it's, uh, they do have a bison burger, but yeah, it's, it's chicken bites that are blue cheesed and spicy. Oh my God, it's good.
2:56
Yeah, but you get a Cubano from Osters. Damn you. Also delicious. I only do it once- Burger in your plate-... about every 10 stops... and you're getting a damn drink. Yeah, there's, there's no point.
3:06
Which is also awesome, mind you, so- I do it, like, once every 10 stops... I'm just gonna shame you a little bit. But yeah, that, it's, you gotta get with jalapenos.
3:12
[laughs] So have any of you tried the Impossible Burger? No. No. No. No. I was- Used to, huh? No, no. No. I just haven't had a, you know, chance. I- You like it? It's okay. You know, I- I almost-...
3:24
as a vegetarian would do, I'm sure... I almost, I almost did the, uh, White Castle Impossible Slider. Oh, shit, I know that was a thing. I mean, it still is. I actually go back to White Castle.
3:33
Uh, but they said- I get-... it'd be 15 minutes before they'll get it, and I'm like- Fuck that, give me back my $1.20 [laughs]... dude, dude, no, this is a fucking fast food place, man. Yeah. And that's not fast.
3:45
I, I guess my- That's 'cause they have to run down to the store- I-... buy it- Yeah... bring it back, cook it- Or not good food done quickly- Yeah... or anything. I mean, yeah, you can spin it any way.
3:54
Wow, digressing to food rapidly. Right? My God. Well, my whole thing about the Impossible Burger is it costs more than real meat, so I guess unless you're a vegetarian, I'm not sure I see a benefit to it.
4:02
Well, apparently, apparently it's like, uh, what is it? It's like the, the beet [laughs] has, like, this thing that replicates a hemoglobin. It's, like, an enzyme. It's a, I think it's like an enzyme.
4:12
Yeah, it, like, like, like, like a hemoglobin- Is it grown in a test tube, or- So it makes it look like- Something of that nature, yeah... yeah. Yeah, it's like weird.
4:19
I don't know that it's necessarily better [laughs]- Right... eating meat, but it's an option that actually tastes like meat, uh, from a vegetarian, uh, standpoint. Well, it sounds like a good time. It tasted great. Yeah.
4:27
I actually thought it was a burger, uh- Texture-wise. Yeah, but it was- That's the first I've heard that it had that, is I could've swore it was a burger. Yeah.
4:32
I was like, "Can you just check and make sure this is right?" But, uh, it was, it was, uh [laughs]- [laughs] But I know. Full Spectrum Cycling cooking show here. Yeah. I, I'm, I'm, now I will- That you bite into...
4:42
I will try it now just because Josh gives it a thumbs up. Yeah. Yeah. You know, I will too, just for Josh. I think they had, I think they had a big bag full of them at- Not the-... Costco yesterday...
4:50
are you talking the, uh- Really?... Burger King- 'Cause they're not inexpensive... version? Is that, they, they were kind of like- No, in LA... the pilot shit on that. Yeah, I don't know about that shit.
4:57
Um, I was in LA, uh- Oh, fair enough. Yeah. La. L- you know how they say it there. LA. LA. LA. Yeah. LA. Uh, you know what I did in LA? That's it, yeah. [laughs] I had my bag with me. [laughs] 'Cause it's not a bag.
5:10
Yeah, it's a bag. It's a bag. Bag. You know what they don't do in LA? 380s. From what I can tell, ride fat bikes. No. They got lots of beaches. They're too busy living and dying in LA. Oh. Oh, nice. Mm-hmm.
5:19
I rode a bike through, down Pico, and I'm like, "Ugh." Right. I'm like, "Nobody knows how to- I'm too busy trying to escape from LA... deal with [laughs] bicyclists at all." I mean, like- It's LA.
5:33
I can't work LA Confidential in, but- Yeah, huh, let me try that. [laughs] No, they just want- We can work in-... they just love their cars... but, you know what we can work in? Some of the greatest bags in the world.
5:42
Meep. Roadrunner bags are made in LA. Meep, meep. Meep, meep. Meep, meep. In LA. Meep, meep. LA. What's their slogan? The, the worst place to ride a bike [laughs] or something? Yeah, something to that effect. That's it.
5:51
The hardest place to ride a bike. That's what I just said. Yeah. [laughs] Yeah, that's what- But they make some pretty killer bags. And their, their little slogan on their stickers are, "Hit your brakes, not people."
6:00
Yeah. [laughs] That's awesome. [laughs] Hit your brakes, not bicycles. I'm pretty sure that's what it is I don't know. Fight, why, fight for- Where is that sticker? I want one of those... tomato, tomato.
6:09
Didn't you have some of those around here? Didn't you keep one? I didn't. Oh. I got them somewhere probably. Yeah. Okay. I'll, I'll check them out when I, uh, go back and get us some more beer.
6:15
Anyway, ladies and gentlemen, we sell Road Runner bags and they are fantastic. Meep meep. Oh, hitting it early. [bell ringing] Yeah, that's 'cause I'm gonna- Top of the hill... probably get another one in a little bit.
6:26
[laughs] Okay. Top of the hill. Top of the hill. Top of the hill, folks. And it's a fancy one tonight. Thank you, Gregory. Today's show beer is Toppling Goliath's Sudosu. Oh. And I'm just gonna take a little swallow.
6:39
Hmm. Hmm. It's got a little tiny re- T-Rex arms I knew, I knew it was good, but until I looked it up on Beer Advocate and saw it was a world-class 100 on the score. That doesn't happen very often.
6:52
And how long has it been available here? 'Cause the only other- It's very new... time I've ever had it is at the brewery in- Sure... in Decorah, Iowa, which is where it's brewed. Beer is spreading out quite a bit.
6:59
Decorah's getting bigger than they... Well, not Decorah. Toppling Goliath's gotten, getting bigger and, and, and popular- Regional... because it's freaking [laughs] outstanding, so.
7:07
Yeah, I, I'm not a good describer, but it's tasty. It's muddy. It's, it's cloudy. It's not nearly as bite-y as a, as an IPA. It's definitely a pale ale. Mm-hmm, yep. Not an IPA, which I enjoy quite immensely.
7:22
Which I'm gonna now throw in a, a shout-out to Company Brewing, which did the River West, uh, Neighborhood Hops Beer, which is a basically a pale ale, where they gather all the hops from the neighborhood- Oh, right on...
7:35
and, and brew a big batch of beer. And, um, because I contributed, I got a growler the other day, and- Nice... it was, uh, I was not expecting much, 'cause they don't know what the hops are.
7:44
They're like, "Oh, it's just people bringing in hops." Bling, bling, bling, bling. I'm like, "So what is this gonna be?" And they're like, "It's an ale."
7:50
And I set my expectations very low, and I was unbelievably impressed. I'm like, "You guys make a great beer." [laughs] So is it only people that contributed hops that get beer?
8:00
No, you can get on tap at the Company Rec Center. Right on. Yep. It's probably worth a try since it's not gonna be there long. Right. Right, right down the street from the shop, folks. We're not- Yeah. Yes...
8:09
Company Brew- We're not included... excluded. So how many microbreweries are there within a mile of the shop? Oh, we've got Gathering Place. Yep. We've got Black Husky across the street. Yep. Uh, Lakefront a mile.
8:21
Probably a mile. Probably. Lakefront. Company. Company. Um, and I guess technically we could as much, like, to my chagrin, uh, Dead Bird Brewing is over by, um, Golda Meir School. Is that at, uh, is that a brewery? Yeah.
8:36
With a taproom? Uh, yeah. Is it only a- And they got like a game room... I suppose the Pabst has a taproom too now, right? And, well, a little extra
8:44
where, uh, Hamilton used to be over by Trocadero Zone, that's a new place. Oh, that's, uh, that, well, it's not that new. Eagle, Eagle- Eagle Trace?... Eagle Park. Eagle Park, thank you.
8:54
So within a little, a mile or a little more, there's six- Well, here, six good breweries. [laughs] So that's why, that's why we located where we did. Yeah, that's totally why we did, you know.
9:04
That way we can- JK, stop snorting. It's early. Hey, shh. I am as God made me. [laughs] Hey, I'm here to, to snort. Snort and correct your divots. Huh. [laughs] Okay. On that note.
9:18
[laughs] So anybody ride this week other than- Well, beside the Zito ride? Yeah, beside the Zito ride. Uh, what else did we do? No, I did not do it. Uh, Packer game, I went long. I was like, hey.
9:30
I left, uh, up in the Shoreweeed, and then went all the way down to Walker's Point. Nice. Where'd you go to Walker's Point to watch the game? Uh, Sabbatic. Sabbatic. Sabbatic, yeah. Have you tried Fixture Pizza yet?
9:46
Oh, yes, because they have- Caesar salad is outstanding... they have a, a, uh, a wonderful time of either Fixture Pizza or Bamboo or something.
9:58
Yeah, there's- Or, or whatever is gonna be the halftime delicacy that is there. I see. And- Hey, d- don't you folks wanna come and visit Milwaukee with all this wonderful stuff going on? You should come.
10:07
I mean- We'd love to... and, and, and the touchdowns jive are Tully, which is awesome and terrifying at the same time. Way better than the green scourge at, uh, Duke's.
10:19
Yeah, like the green Whatever, whatever that whole something. It's, it's Kamikazes at Tracks, and that's what I like. Kamikazes are okay. Yeah. At least they're...
10:25
I mean, the green scourge is, uh, you never know what it is and it's green, and you're like, "Eh." Understand. Not St. Patrick's Day. Why is it green? It's Tully. You know what you're in for. Yeah.
10:34
Actually- And then you're riding home- Yeah, well, I met-... knowing what you got into. [laughs] I met you at, uh, I met you at Up and watched the second half of the game.
10:42
Exactly, 'cause I had to get the hell out of Dodge. Gotta do a, gotta do some riding to burn off the old- Oh... alcohol calories. Good Lord. That was fun stuff. So, uh, Josh is here, and he brought...
10:54
We're, we're work- Uh, Tony and I are working on an electric bike project for a, a customer we work with that, um, we'll m- hopefully do, like, 30 of them the coming year. A year. Yeah, that's pretty outstanding.
11:03
And Josh brought, brought in his fancified, uh, Raleigh electric, um- With the greatest name ever for a bike... Tripper... the Tripper. Yeah. The Tripper. It's actually the Day Tripper. The Day Tripper.
11:12
Which is quite appropriate for me. Nice. [laughs] There's only one way you take, you know, there's something... Wait. Ah. This, this is a custom- Like my hair, thank you, Danny Lash. Yeah, I love that song.
11:25
This is a, this is a custom-made pretty nice 29er, or guess you could go 29 or 700C- Mm-hmm... DuVinci rear, front drive. What do you think it is? 72 volt? Yeah, I believe so. It's a very fast...
11:43
It's definitely a Class C electric bike. Motorcycle. Meaning that it's got a throttle, and it exceeds 20 miles an hour. [laughs] Apparently it can really exceed 20 miles an hour.
11:53
We're gonna be, uh, testing it at some point if Josh ever remembers to bring in the, uh, charger. Technicalities. Technicalities. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. But you can still ride it at, as a bike without it. Yeah, you can.
12:02
It's- Yes. It's heavy... that's one of the things about the mid-drive thing.
12:06
I know you could probably ride it if it lost a charge, but if you- So on this bike, if you broke your chain for some reason, you could still use the motor. Right. Yep. 'Cause it's a front hub. Yep.
12:16
So, um, yeah, we're, we're anxious to try this one out and, uh- It distributes weight differently too. I like the idea of having the front wheel being...
12:23
Although I read a pretty, pretty interesting story about a guy who has a front-drive bike who accidentally over-accelerated in the gravel- Mm... and, uh, politely as possible to say, ate shit. [laughs] Yeah.
12:35
[laughs] That's pretty hard. Well, that's why you're gonna wanna use your pedal assist. Right. You know. Yep. I think you only do that once, and then you learn your lesson.
12:43
I don't- Kinda like putting your bike on a rack. So- I don't think we'll, we'll have a throttle option on these ones that we're doing just for that purpose. Pedal assist is- Burn hand on stove once.
12:52
I have throttle- Once... but I never use it, mm, I keep the assist pretty low. So there's five different speeds, uh, or assist levels you can, you can choose, and I keep it pretty low. And you're commuting how far on it?
13:01
Uh, 15 miles each way, so it'd be 30 miles. Um, and I can generally get two rounds or two, uh, commutes to and from work without, uh, completely draining the battery. 30-ish miles without- It's closer to 60. Oh, 60.
13:17
Nice. That's... You got a-- and that's not a heavy battery pack. I just picked it up. It's not, I mean, it's a heavy bike, but it's not outrageously heavy.
13:25
I'm also pretty slim on it, you know, and I'm on, I'm on a trail where it's pretty much straight shot all the way in. Yeah, so you're giving equal juice all the time. And I'm- There's not stopping and starting...
13:32
because it's front and I'm driving from the back too. Right. And it has the new Vinci rear hub, which is a great electric assist hub. It is the way to go. Yeah.
13:40
So what do you-- how much time do you think it shaves off your commute? Uh, to be perfectly honest, I haven't done the commute, uh, on a bike that's not e-bike. [laughs] Substantial amount, I'd imagine. Yeah, yeah.
13:51
I mean, I'm averaging probably 15 to 20, if not a bit more, um, especially there's one, one bit where I'm hitting 30 and I'm hauling ass down the trail.
14:00
Just for a little background, uh, Josh built a cargo bike and rode it from Vancouver to San Francisco. Mm, which wasn't necessarily a good idea, uh, says my knees. [laughs] Says your knees, yeah. It was, uh, what?
14:11
Eight speeds. [laughs] And that wasn't electric either. No, and it was an eight-speed internal. Internal. On a cargo bike. Hence- Yeah... where we are now. Yeah. [laughs] Yeah, that was a, that was quite a ride.
14:21
Knee surgery, uh, coming up. [laughs] So, uh, w- I'm gonna have a meeting with, uh, Schlabowski and, uh, Peter, Ian, Tony on Friday, and Peter has the hookup on parts, I think. Awesome. Oh, yeah.
14:34
He's got a direct connection to overseas because it seems to me like in the United States, I don't know what the politics of electric bike supply on the motor side of stuff is, but it just seems kind of disjointed and nobody really seems to do a great job of it that I've been- And he, his, he, he says he's got between 30 and 40,000 miles on his front electric hub.
14:56
Wow. Yeah. And his, his bullet goes by. Oh, shit. His bullet is- Oh, shit... he's got the battery pack. He can do- I, yeah... tremendous miles. He said it's a 35-ish mile an hour bike. Oh, yeah.
15:06
A cargo, a, a bullet going 35 miles an hour is, in fact, a bullet. Yeah, he makes his own battery packs. Yeah, he does cr- he makes custom battery packs. I see him ripping on, uh, on Brady, and just like...
15:19
[laughs] Matter of fact, I was- You can see like one, like, leg and wham. I'm like, "Yeah, that's 35 miles an hour."
15:26
[laughs] I, I saw a guy on a cargo bike yesterday in the cold riding back from work, and I thought, "Hmm, I wonder if it's Pete." And then I saw his lights going, I'm like, "Definitely not Pete."
15:34
The screen just blinked over here. Uh-oh. You know what that means? We got a caller. Hey, welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? Hey, this is Carrie from The Drift. Hi, Carrie. Hello, Carrie.
15:50
Hey. I was, I was trying to pretend we didn't know you were gonna call in, but- We knew you were gonna call in... we knew you were gonna call in. [laughs] Hello. This is our surprise voice.
15:57
So, uh, you, you have an Alaska phone number, huh? I, I do have an Alaska phone number. Um- Yeah... I live in Wyoming, but obviously used to live in Alaska. I love Wyoming. It's one of my favorite states.
16:13
Especially because it doesn't have- Yeah... a lot of people. Right? That's a very good reason to go there. [laughs] It's actually a highly populated state. Yep. I'm a big fan of the Buffalo area.
16:25
I lived in Colorado and I used to have to go to Cheyenne to buy liquor on Sundays because you can't buy it in Colorado. [laughs] Right. And every car in the parking lot had Colorado plates. [laughs] All right, Carrie.
16:38
So, um, we've been emailing back and forth a little bit about your event, The Drift, which is coming up in March, right? Yes.
16:47
Um, fill us in with basically what's gonna be happening at the event, how it's set up, different distances, you know, the, the location. Can you give us a little overview of the event? Yeah, absolutely.
16:59
So speaking of few people, we're kind of based out of the least populated county in the least populated state. So the race is, it's rural.
17:07
Um, but we'll start, um, just outside of Pinedale, um, on the Green, on the Upper Green River Valley.
17:14
Um, and we offer a fat bike, a run, or a ski, and we have a 13 mile out and back, um, a 28 mile loop, and then new this year we'll have a 100 mile event that we're pretty excited about. Um- Wow...
17:28
it'll go, kind of dance along the CDT trail a little bit, um, head over to the other side of the Wind River Range, um, to Dubois, and then back over to the, to the Pinedale side. So it, it should be- How many-...
17:39
a good one. It- How many people you think are gonna run the 100 miles? Um, I'm, I'm hoping for about 25 for a first year event. Um, you know, we just got our permit- Right, right, right...
17:49
um, in July, so, uh, we didn't have a lot of, um, notice for people. So yeah, we're hoping for about 25. We're capped at 50, so you'll definitely regardless have a, uh, a wilderness experience while you're out there.
18:03
Yeah. Day of show like, "Hey, come on, you really wanna do this."
18:07
[laughs] Yeah, I think that's one of the reasons why we wanted to talk to you a little earlier than perhaps, uh, you know, closer to race time is because you're gonna have a limited number of entries.
18:17
And, uh, if I remember right, you've got, uh, an early bird thing going. What does that look like? Yeah. So right now we're offering early bird registration for, um, all three distances.
18:28
On December 1st, the price will, will go up. Um, so right now, for example, the, the 100-mile entry is, is 250, which is pretty good for a race of, uh, that length. But, uh, that'll pop up to 325 after December 1st.
18:42
Right on. Cool. Um, what do you expect for weather that time of year? I know it can be pretty variable, but what could a, a runner or a fat biker or a skier expect to, uh, compete on?
18:53
Um, it's probably best to just not have expectations. Um- [laughs] It can be anywhere to, um, I mean, I wouldn't expect it per se, but um, definitely, you know, we get as high as 9,800 feet.
19:10
So there's a chance that we could encounter some below zero. Um, we go over Union Pass, which is pretty notorious for some wind. So I would expect wind.
19:20
I would expect cold, and if you're out there for 48 hours, I feel like there's a distant, decent chance that you'll at least catch a little bit of sunshine. So, um- Cool...
19:28
hopefully with any luck we'll get a little bit of, um, freeze thaw going on to just harden the trails a little bit. So are you personally a runner, skier or a fat biker? I'm probably more of a runner of the three.
19:44
Um, I am not a phenomenal fat biker, and I'm not really a great skier either. None of us are. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Yeah.
19:52
That's why we do, that's why we do these goofy shows, because, uh- [laughs] Are these trails, are these trails- We're riders... groomed at all? [laughs] Yeah. Are these trails groomed at all?
20:01
No, they're, they're absolutely groomed. They're absolutely groomed. Um, they're, they're double track. There's one section that's about three and a half miles.
20:09
Um, we've been kind of, uh, endearingly calling it the gorge, sort of after the gorge on the Iditarod Trail.
20:18
Um, it's not really a gorge, but there's an ungroomed section that kind of goes down into a river valley, and that has the potential to maybe cause some racers some problems.
20:28
Um, there's a little creek in there that you're gonna have to find a snow bridge to get over, but the course will be well marked and we kind of have a plan B if that area's just a complete disaster.
20:36
But generally by March you have a, um, a good enough base that, um, again, you should have some good snow bridges, and the trail will be marked.
20:44
All of our intersections are marked, and like I said, outside of that three-mile stretch it's all groomed. Cool. Right on. So the actual date is, I said early March, but I don't remember the, the dates.
20:54
What are the dates of it? Yeah. So the 100 mile will start March 13th at 9:00 AM. Um, the 28-mile and 13-mile will start on Saturday. And then you'll have, um, the, a 48-hour cutoff, um, for the 100-mile race.
21:11
So at, at 48 hours if you're still stuck out in the middle of nowhere, you're just gonna walk away and leave people out there in the, in the woods? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Leave them out in the middle of nowhere. [laughs] Yeah.
21:20
We, we have a, um- With a headlamp and a GPS. Hey, we, we got your money, now go away. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] Find your, find your-
21:29
So, okay, Carrie, besides, uh, The Drift, which sounds like a really cool event and, um- Hell yeah...
21:35
I, I would encourage people to learn more about this and see if they wanna do it, what other kind of, since this is sort of a biking thing, this show, what other kind of biking stuff happens in your area over the, the winter season?
21:50
Well, um, we actually, we just got a brand new bike shop in town, and so kind of with their presence here I feel like biking is up and coming in this area. Um, there's definitely- Nice...
22:01
you know, if you, if you take a bike out, there's enough snow machine trails and, um, groomed snow machine trails out there that you could go ride, you know, 200 miles without ever crossing a road if you wanted to.
22:12
So it's definitely, it's out there. Right on. Um, yeah. So is the, is the, is the shop right in Pinedale? Yep, right in Pinedale, right on the, right on the main street in town. Cool.
22:24
I- Did, did, did you say 200 miles without a road? Seeing another person. [laughs] Uh- Or a car... you, you'll probably see some people.
22:33
You'll probably some, see some people, but, um, and that's a little bit of an arbitrary number, but I'm pretty sure, like, just, you know, glancing over the map I have in my head, I think that you could get, um, 200 miles without ever, you know, hitting a road.
22:46
The CVP Trail System is just- Or deal, dealing with a car... it's phenomenal. Phenomenal... angry driver. Why are we in Downtown Milwaukee? Right? That sounds- That is the key question... unbelievably cool.
22:57
[laughs] Well, we just discussed how there's six breweries within a mile of the shop. That's why we're there. So that, that, that there is that, you know. Well, we, we have a brewery too, so. [laughs] Well. Oh.
23:09
All right. What's it- And is it within a mile of the bike shop? It is literally next door to the bike shop. Gee. Bingo, bingo, bingo. What, what's the, uh, what's the brewery called? Uh, it's, uh- Big Bang...
23:20
Wind River Brewery. Wind River. Wind River. Oh yeah, that's, Wind River's a big thing out that way. Nice.
23:27
My, my dad was born in Montana and we spent a lot of time out west when I was a youth, and then, uh, once I got older, I, I kind of gravitated towards Wyoming and, and, uh, the nowheresville of it all.
23:39
Now you gotta put a- Yeah... link to the Coney in. It's, it's a really, um, it's a pretty unique area. Yeah, very cool.
23:45
Well, um, I don't know, what, you got anything else you wanna tell us about your area before we let you get back to planning this race, The Drift? Yeah.
23:56
Uh, I don't, like I said, I think we're, it's definitely kind of up and coming. Our, our bike shop just got a Geared Up bike shop.
24:02
They've got a, uh, a groomer, so there should be some single track, um, coming out this way this summer. And, um- Okay. That's cool... yeah, come check it out.
24:10
And, um, if not, then there's always the, there's always the, there's always the summer if, if it's a little too chilly up here for you. We do put on a, uh, our sister race. Uh.
24:18
It's the Sierra Pike Adventure, so not fat bike, but- Wait, did you say, did you say too chilly?
24:25
Yeah, yeah, it's getting a little chilly out here 'Cause, 'cause, 'cause- Do you have any idea what temperature it is right now in Milwaukee? No. [laughs] Yeah, we, we've been rocking in the, uh- The single digits...
24:36
single digits for like a week now. [laughs] It seems like it's been a couple days. Fair enough. Fair enough. [laughs] We're having an uncharacteristically warm November, but I don't know.
24:45
I mean, it gets, we're at the top of the season. We're all in particle on this one, eh.
24:50
[laughs] Uh, one thing that I, I was, uh, I f- I forgot to ask when you were talking about the snow machine trails, um, how do the, uh, the snow machine people, uh, respond to cyclists on their trail, or is that any kind of an issue or is there just not enough people to really make it a problem?
25:06
I think that, yeah, there's, there's not enough people and there's enough trail to not really make it a problem. Um, I think fat biking is definitely a little bit newer in the area.
25:16
Um, so we haven't had, you know, there's not a ton of people out there.
25:20
Um, so I guess, you know, there's, well, there's always the potential but like I said, by and large, I feel like people in the area are pretty friendly. It's a, it's a massive, massive trail system.
25:30
Um, and there's just not a ton of people. So- I know there's not. I mean, fat-... to date we've not had any problems. Right on. Yeah. There's not the get off my lawn guy.
25:39
[laughs] Well, certainly fat biking's been around Wyoming as long as fat biking's been going on. I know we had the Global Fat Bike Summit there in Jackson a few years back, and that was pretty dang cool.
25:53
Um, if they would ever let us ride into Yellowstone Park, that would be a trip worth doing. Oh. Be there in a heartbeat. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Some, for some reason you couldn't, you couldn't fat bike in Yellowstone back then.
26:03
I mean, even though snow machines can go in there, there was some, probably they didn't want people to get eaten by a bear. No, you just have to go faster. [laughs] Don't listen to whoever is talking to you.
26:14
[laughs] You're not outrunning a fucking bear, dude. A bear. I don't care how fast a bike rider is. Well, there are people. Sometimes, hey, sometimes we- You and I are not outrunning a bear...
26:22
sometimes eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you. The bear eats you. You know what they don't have in LA? Bar. Bar. [laughs] All right, Carrie. Oh, yeah, they do. Well, thanks very much for being on the show.
26:35
They're just different kinds of bears. I guess we're gonna k- kind of ramble on. Yeah, thanks for having me.
26:38
Um, and then, you know, uh, folks, look for a story on the site in a couple of weeks, uh, about this event, and it'll be on the calendar if we could figure out how to get it on there. And, uh- We'll figure it out...
26:49
the Drift, March, Pinedale, Wyoming, be there or be square. Rhombus. Thank you very much, Carrie. Awesome. Yeah. Clever. Thanks for having me, guys. Right on. Thanks. Have a great day. Thanks.
26:59
Maybe we'll talk to you again a little bit before the event and get a, get an update. Yeah, an update. A count. Yeah. Sounds great. Sounds great. Right on. Okay. All right. Thanks. Have a good evening. Thanks for coming.
27:11
Bye. That sounds like a pretty damn fun event. [slurps] Although 48 hours to go 100 miles, that sounds like a pretty grueling [laughs] 100 miles. Uh, for your running purposes. Oh, I forgot about the runners. Yeah.
27:24
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know. What was it? It was, uh- I'm sorry, but the thought of 100 miles running- Bike, run, and what? Ski. Ski. Ski. Jeez. I don't know, maybe snowshoe. I, I didn't hear that, but maybe. Yeah.
27:35
It's like running, only better. I hope we get enough snow this year to snowshoe. I haven't been able to snowshoe in a couple years really. I think we're on course, you know, to potentially throw it up.
27:42
There was like eight records in the last week in Milwaukee. I only have two records. Throw it up. They're vinyl, and they're in the other room. [laughs] I think you just said, "Throw it up."
27:53
So where were we when, when, uh, Carrie called in? Were we still talking about Josh's fine ass fat bike or, or, um, electric bike, or did we, uh- It's electric. Looky, looky... did we kinda get through that thing?
28:04
I, I don't know. I'm, I'm gonna enjoy giving it a little test ride. Our friend's, uh, I, I'm, I have not- I promise I will return it to you as clean as it is right now... really... and there will be no like
28:13
stuff in the trunk. No junk in the trunk. No junk in the trunk. Come on. You gotta be kidding me. No, it wasn't junk. It was leaves and, and mice and [laughs] Kibble... stuff. Raspberries. Raspberries. Kibble.
28:26
> There's just kibble. Kibble. > There's no kibble. To be perfectly honest, I don't ride it in the winter, so.
28:32
[laughs] > When's the last time you rode that bike? Uh, the underwear ride in July. Nice. Nice. Or August. The under, yeah. It's, you know, it's a seasonal bike. It doesn't wanna be out there in the snow. Yeah.
28:45
[laughs] We did, did you do the underwear ride to see the greatest band ever, Daikaiju? No. That was, uh, August. Yeah. Yeah. No. That was my birthday. Oh. It was, you gotta see Daikaiju.
28:58
Next time you're in Town Jazz you have to come with. He, yeah, that was his re-born day. That was so good. [laughs] They are one of the hottest bands you will ever see in your life. Literally. Where are they playing? Hm?
29:08
Where, where, where are they playing? X-Ray Arcade. Uh, they play at the X-Ray Arcade. They play at Subatic. They play at, at Quarters. At Quarters. You need to check out Daikaiju. And the hot part's literally fire.
29:20
Yeah. All right. I- They start their instruments on fire... Josh. Josh, I can just boil this down very easily. It's a, uh, three-piece surf rock all in kabuki masks.
29:38
[laughs] And they light their shit on fire. Sounds like a good time. And they play the last couple of songs with people holding them above their heads. With, with absolutely no, no lyrics. It is incredible.
29:47
So wherever you think that you are in good position to see them, they move around, and then you have to pick them up and they just float. So. Yeah. All right. This is- That was pretty succinct... I'm just saying. Well.
30:01
Oh, no. [laughs] I went, I went to see them at Subatic with absolutely no expectations, and I left Subatic like, "Oh my God, I have to see this band again, again, and again, and again."
30:10
And I feel bad because I didn't see them at Quarters the day Greg did because it was a blizzard. Wait, who's Greg? I'm Sven. Oh, Sven. When Sven- [laughs]... Sven Gregory was, uh, it was... Th- they're incredible.
30:25
They're abs- You will not have a bad time. They are so good. They, it's a band that lights their shit on fire. Oh, look, we have another four-pack of pseudos. And it's just there. Greg, I love you.
30:35
I mean, Sven, I love you. I mean, Sven Gregory, I love you. Yeah. I think Sven Gregory's- It's like Svengoolie... not a bad idea. It's like Svengoolie- Oh, yeah... the next generation. You're like, uh,
30:46
uh, Lunz's cat's names. Spike Tony? Spike. Yeah, yeah. Ruffels Kenny? Ruffels Kenny. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's 'cause it's Mary Poza Dave, you know that, right? That's how that all started. Is that your...
30:57
Is that in character or what? Exactly. We were trying to name our dog, and Dave's like, "How about Dave?" I'm like, "How about Mary Poza?" Hey, hey, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
31:03
He's like, "How about Mary Poza Dave?" Wait, wait, wait. Like Dave- 'Cause every time I post a picture of that dog he's like, "Hi, Dave." Dave. What do you think, Mary Poza Dave?
31:10
Dave has, Dave has the cone of shame on tonight, which is kind of sad, but- The what? My dog had to go to the vet today, and she sliced open her foot.
31:19
So now she's got the cone of shame on, and- I thought you meant Dave had the... [laughs] Dave would be... You know what? Next time- That would be awesome...
31:26
I see Dave I'm gonna put the cone of shame on that motherfucker. Not just soon. Probably likely he does have it on right now. You should probably give him a call. [laughs] If anybody. You know what?
31:33
He's got a girlfriend now, I don't want to hear about this. If you're throwing the cone of shame on, and Dave and Dana. No. Then, then, then it gets a little, uh, sexy. [laughs] Hey. More,
31:44
in fact, more on the Milwaukee-centric portion of the show, uh- Wow, we're dovetailing here... couple of events up there on the old event thing that we didn't really talk about. Oh. I, we're- Man. Oh, yeah...
31:55
they're coming up on Sunday, right? Or is that Saturday? Uh, Thanksgiving. Granksgiving is Sunday. Granksgiving is Sunday. That's a thing that... Uh, they're still raising food for the food pantry.
32:04
You get food and clothing for the, for, um... It's actually, it is for, uh, um, Path Finders, which is, um, my wife, Molly, I love you, honey. Um, her neighbor's business.
32:18
Uh, he runs, he's the CEO of Path Finders, which is a great organization right up the street on Holton. Nice. Um, so that's, that's a very great way to do it. Um, and yeah, that's starting at the, uh, hostel.
32:33
Cream City Hostel. Cream City Hostel. Um- 11:00 AM. 8th. 11. 11:00 AM. So is that pancake breakfast right before it at Swing Park? Uh, I believe so.
32:42
Yeah, you go down there at 8:30 and then- You eat a bunch of pancakes... they're, they're probably gonna- And, uh- Um, it's a great event... bum, bum, bum...
32:49
it, you know, it's, it's just, it's really cool to help out others in need.
32:52
And, you know, unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, I'm not gonna be able to make it this year because I've got a little one at home that I need to hang out with. Tony got a new baby.
33:02
I got a new baby. [laughs] It's very small baby. Don't drink on a Sunday. It's not good for the baby. He's doing so good, man. It's not good for the baby. Ch- Chas just met the baby. He's a little boy.
33:14
He's a tiny little boy. Tiny lad, tiny human being. Uh, we had a couple of links. Did you see the- Tiny. Man, they're small, dude. Tiny. Yes, them all. Yeah. Who, who's the guy from England who just put on 100,000 miles?
33:27
I put a link on it. Uh, the, the, the information. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Uh- Was that on the donkey bike? Uh, no. The donkey bike's the other thing I linked to- Oh... which I think has serious potential in the United States.
33:38
I noticed that their copyright was 2012. Is that thing still available? I, it, yeah, you can buy it on their website, like, today. Oh, Mickey Mantle. Ruth Mantle. 499 pounds. 499 pounds. Looks kind of cool. You know?
33:49
And it, you know, it's a 20-inch wheel cargo bike, front and rear. It's got, it- 80... it's like- One million miles. Not- Oh my God, he's got- One million... 1 million. Yeah. Here, man. I told you 100,000. One million.
34:01
He has a million miles on a bicycle. This guy's legendary. We should get him to call in. You know who else has, uh, got over a million is, uh, Scott Dixon has to have, 'cause he ride 25,000 miles a year.
34:13
Should contact him, have him call in. He, at one point he did, like, 10 years without ever missing a day of riding, and he lives in Iowa. [snorts] Yeah, so that's eight hours a day every day.
34:23
There's some pretty- Or more... there's some pretty shitty days in Iowa [laughs] to ride a bike. Yeah. He's, he's the only American to have ever won Paris-Brest-Paris, which is a grueling 750-mile solo effort.
34:35
Not like Tour de France where you get to sleep overnight and that kind of business. You just keep going until you're done. Take a two-hour lunch and stuff like that. Draft the tandems for a while and then
34:44
leave them in the dust. A million miles on a bicycle. Yeah, man, that's crazy. And his bicycle, of course, was steel. Steel is real. That's what I was saying. And yes, that's coming up. This next 2020 year.
35:01
Well, we should probably plan that event. [laughs] That's true. I have the, I have the artwork for it. Sure. Awesome. All ready. So- Let's get T-shirts starting now... we've got that going for us.
35:10
Get them on the page, man. Yeah. Like, I'll get that rolling. Let's, let's get those T-shirts ahead of time. Eh, as soon as 2020 gets here we'll get on that. Well, I...
35:16
Christ, I mean, people are, like, like, promo-ing, like- Fucking... [laughs] They might be trying... con- con- concerts in goddamn August. Oh, yeah. Oh, ooh, uh, fucking Black Crowes are playing in August.
35:34
Can, can we- Hey. Let, let's digress slightly- [laughs]... because I know you're a huge Tool fan. I thought Counting Crows was back. Uh. Counting Crows is back. Black Crowes, Texas Blues. Black Crowes. Yeah.
35:45
First thing you know, old Jed's a millionaire. Kin folks said, "Jed-" Jed, move away from there... "California's the place you ought to be." So they loaded up the truck And moved to Beverly. [laughs] Movie stars.
35:57
Swimming pools and movie stars. Next thing you know, old Je- All right, we're stopping that. [laughs] So I, I'm digressing to the greatest radio station in the world, WMSE. Mm-hmm. And I know you're a huge Tool fan.
36:10
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. The Trap Set show this week- Oh, yeah... cannot be missed. If you do not catch that live- Ah... oh my God, is that good. Okay. If you didn't catch it live today, also catch last week. It's a two-parter.
36:24
Oh. Yeah. Really? 'Cause everything was bup, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. He did, he did have a, a beep. It, it was, everything was beeped out. I was beat out.
36:36
Like- I thought the best part was- [beatboxes] The best part was when he asked if, the, the, the interviewer's like, "So does your four-o- four-year-old listen to your music?" He's like, "He's kind of into Kraftwerk."
36:46
I'm like- [laughs] [laughs] He's like, "We Are the Robots." I'm like, "I love this guy. I love this kid." [laughs] I, I, I just, everything about it is awesome. Oh, no, it, it, it was so organic. Yeah. It was so organic.
36:59
We're just going like, "And-" It's a great show... it was just like, "Oh, and fucking fuck, and oh, and, and I talked to fucking this, and fucking this, and fucking this."
37:07
Now, we're explicit, so I can say- Well, you can say that. Fuck that. [groans] But it was like MSC annual just... [laughs] So hey, folks- And everything was like, "Yeah"...
37:17
wmc.org, you can listen to this live streaming anywhere in the world. It's great. Sydney, Australia, hope your fires are not taking everybody out. Yeah.
37:25
It is a- Uh, Honolulu, Hawaii, you know, Munich, Germany, wherever you, wherever you are, you can stream- The greatest radio station- Wmc.org... in the world.
37:33
Sweden already knows that this is, like, the best radio station in the world. Unbelievable. I mean- No, it is... and that show, everything about it is great. Yeah. Blues Drive, eh, but everything else is great.
37:44
All right, ladies and germs, ready to wrap this one up? I think we are. Final thoughts? That's it? It's cold. [laughs] I have new fleece pants and I feel very sexy. Oh, me too. Me too.
37:59
I'm wearing my new fleece pants right now. I'm wearing my new fleece pants. Sorry, Josh. [laughs] I would leave the country when this weather comes around. Yeah. Yeah. Thanks for ringing in your bike rack.
38:08
Thanks for being on the show. Right on, Josh. And thank you, Kerry, for telling us all about the drift out there in Pinedale, Wyoming. Thanks- Even-... for Mike to cough again. Yeah.
38:19
You got- you should have a cough button, dude. That's what I am.
38:30
[upbeat rock music]
