- 1:11Speaker 2: Blazar from Lazarre. Hello, everybody nailed it, joined as always
- 1:14Speaker 2: our bark. Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars and
- 1:22Speaker 2: now the Patriots are chasing one point. The higher game
- 1:25Speaker 2: script is altered from that point because seven weeks in
- 1:30Speaker 2: you can't line up on sides on a pat I
- 1:32Speaker 2: love this well, this is where you roll your eyes
- 1:35Speaker 2: and those special teams. But the inspired game was altered
- 1:40Speaker 2: by because he lined up half the yard off side.
- 1:43Speaker 2: They gave up eight points on special teams. Yeah, it's
- 1:48Speaker 2: a great start. Is this the show? It's gonna be
- 1:52Speaker 2: the whole show. I mean there's no video on YouTube,
- 1:54Speaker 2: but like, oh, but that's delayed. I think we're on
- 2:01Speaker 2: now I can tell that we're we're on.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it's okay. We couldn't hear anything in here. Maybe
- 2:05Speaker 3: the speaker is off. That might be why there. It's okay.
- 2:08Speaker 3: So you know, look, look, luckily we didn't say anything,
- 2:11Speaker 3: you know, inflammatory.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I don't know that people were not until the open
- 2:15Speaker 2: ended was just perfect timing.
- 2:17Speaker 3: There you go, all right, excellent, Now everybody can just
- 2:19Speaker 3: hear me say that, So that's great, excellent.
- 2:21Speaker 2: What's up everybody?
- 2:22Speaker 3: Hello, Evan Lazarre, Alex Bars Patriots Cast twenty two with
- 2:26Speaker 3: you for the next couple of hours. Here, we're gonna
- 2:28Speaker 3: talk Patriots football a lot of time.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Some news to discuss today.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Very exciting to see Drake May back out at Patriots
- 2:36Speaker 3: practice on Thursday. We will get the injury report probably
- 2:40Speaker 3: shortly after we sign off today, so we don't know
- 2:43Speaker 3: exactly what his participation is going to be labeled as,
- 2:48Speaker 3: but it's a great sign that he is back out
- 2:50Speaker 3: there and looked pretty good in the ten minutes that
- 2:53Speaker 3: we got to see him throwing the football against air.
- 2:56Speaker 3: So riveting stuff, but still a good sign. And we'll
- 3:00Speaker 3: talk about the game last week as we always do,
- 3:03Speaker 3: and you know, take your phone calls and your lovely emails.
- 3:06Speaker 3: So let's kick it off. And hey, Patriots fans, if
- 3:09Speaker 3: you want to see Toyota's best offers, including those not
- 3:11Speaker 3: seen on TV, go to buy at toyota dot com,
- 3:14Speaker 3: Toyota's official website for deals for the official vehicle of
- 3:18Speaker 3: the New England Patriots, Toyota Let's Go places and easy
- 3:21Speaker 3: to drink, easy to enjoy, bud Light, the official beer
- 3:24Speaker 3: sponsor of the New England Patriots. All right, Alex, so
- 3:27Speaker 3: I just teed it up. Let's start here, not where
- 3:29Speaker 3: I planned on start aring. But news is news, News
- 3:32Speaker 3: is news. Yep, Drake may back out at Patriots practice
- 3:35Speaker 3: on Thursday. I always am weary of playing doctor and uh,
- 3:39Speaker 3: you know, speculating about these sort of things. But based
- 3:43Speaker 3: on the concussion protocol, uh, it's trending in the right direction.
- 3:47Speaker 3: It felt like based off of Drowd Mayo's comments, and
- 3:50Speaker 3: again this is just purely a speculation on my part.
- 3:54Speaker 3: But based off of Drowd Mayo's comments yesterday, it sounded
- 3:58Speaker 3: like he was probably in phase three of five of
- 4:01Speaker 3: the concussion protocol.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Uh.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Now that he was there at the beginning of practice,
- 4:06Speaker 3: and I want to mention leading off drills at the
- 4:08Speaker 3: beginning of practice, it does signal that he might be
- 4:12Speaker 3: moving along here and trending in the right direction for Sunday.
- 4:16Speaker 2: So this is I'm with you. I always hate playing doctor, Like,
- 4:20Speaker 2: all right, he hurt his knee, he hurt his arm,
- 4:22Speaker 2: he hurt his whatever. Like we can tell sessions too, right,
- 4:25Speaker 2: So but for me now, it's just knowing the protocol.
- 4:28Speaker 2: And like you said, we knew Drake may was in
- 4:30Speaker 2: phase three yesterday. And you know that there's that chart
- 4:34Speaker 2: from NFL dot com that is doing viral numbers among
- 4:37Speaker 2: the Patriots beat Handy as everybody tries to learn the
- 4:40Speaker 2: NFL concussion Protocol. So you know, I like think we
- 4:44Speaker 2: I'd like to think we've become pretty well versed in
- 4:46Speaker 2: this week. Yeah, so Phase one to two you can't
- 4:50Speaker 2: be on the field, so he's clearly past that. Correct.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Phase three you can get back on the field for
- 4:55Speaker 2: up to thirty minutes. So credit to Andrew Callahan. When
- 4:58Speaker 2: we were asking Girod Mayo about this yesterday, Callahan kind
- 5:03Speaker 2: of talked about it and then at the very end
- 5:05Speaker 2: ask him like, well, Drake may practice for more than
- 5:07Speaker 2: thirty minutes, and Girod Mayo said no, So that means
- 5:09Speaker 2: he was at phase three yesterday. Yes, so he was
- 5:12Speaker 2: on the field. But and the team can choose whatever
- 5:14Speaker 2: thirty minutes they want, It doesn't matter. He was on
- 5:17Speaker 2: the field was he wasn't on the field when we
- 5:19Speaker 2: were out there, So he wasn't on the field for warmups. Okay,
- 5:22Speaker 2: he was on the field for warm ups today. So
- 5:25Speaker 2: that definitively means one thing, and then there's another thing
- 5:28Speaker 2: we have to assume. Okay, it to fin means he
- 5:31Speaker 2: didn't have a setback. Right, if you had a setback
- 5:33Speaker 2: in phase three, he'd go back to phase two, he
- 5:35Speaker 2: wouldn't be on the field. So no setback. Good, Like,
- 5:37Speaker 2: that's good, that's good. The question is, without being out
- 5:42Speaker 2: there and without knowing how long he stays out there,
- 5:45Speaker 2: is he still in phase three and they just chose
- 5:49Speaker 2: the first thirty minutes of practice today or is he
- 5:51Speaker 2: in phase four and he's going to be out there
- 5:53Speaker 2: all day now, there's not a ton of upside in
- 5:57Speaker 2: them choosing stretching as the thirty minutes, right, because what
- 6:02Speaker 2: does that do? Whereas you can put him out there
- 6:04Speaker 2: for the game preparation portion of practice. So I feel
- 6:09Speaker 2: safe to say we can call it a strong assumption
- 6:13Speaker 2: that Drake May is into phase four. Yes, And if
- 6:16Speaker 2: you don't mind me taking this one step further, I
- 6:18Speaker 2: don't know if you have another take to your theory
- 6:21Speaker 2: about he's going to play this week. So there which
- 6:23Speaker 2: I've thought all week long, this is my opinion. There
- 6:25Speaker 2: is a Loophole's not the word, what's the word?
- 6:31Speaker 3: Are you talking about it? For quarterback quarterbacks? Yeah, it's
- 6:33Speaker 3: not a loophole. It's a different set of rules because
- 6:35Speaker 3: they're not gonna get contact.
- 6:37Speaker 2: It's the same set of rules, but there's a unique
- 6:39Speaker 2: circumstance for quarterbacks. It's a by law. It's a bi bilo.
- 6:43Speaker 2: I can't I'm going with by law. I actually thought
- 6:45Speaker 2: I wrote it here by law. The point being, so
- 6:49Speaker 2: Phase three is you're allowed on the field non contact
- 6:51Speaker 2: for thirty minutes. That's it, Like you can't be on
- 6:53Speaker 2: the field for thirty minutes. Yes. Phase four is you
- 6:57Speaker 2: can go through a normal practice, non contact, and then
- 7:02Speaker 2: what you do to clear the phase is like, okay,
- 7:03Speaker 2: phase three thirty minutes, your symptoms don't increase, you don't
- 7:07Speaker 2: have old symptoms come back. Like, that's how you move
- 7:09Speaker 2: to phase four, right, Yes, so phase four you go
- 7:11Speaker 2: through non contact practice, full practice, and then do your
- 7:14Speaker 2: symptoms come back? Yes? Or no? You go to phase five,
- 7:17Speaker 2: Phase five, full practice, do your symptoms come back? No,
- 7:20Speaker 2: you're cleared? Right. So for quarterbacks specifically, they're always non
- 7:25Speaker 2: contact every practice. So phase four and phase five are
- 7:28Speaker 2: the same thing that doesn't May can get cleared quicker.
- 7:33Speaker 2: He doesn't get to skip a phase. But what it
- 7:35Speaker 2: means is if it were like alignment, right, Yeah, being
- 7:39Speaker 2: out for a full practice, even if it's non contact,
- 7:42Speaker 2: you may not be able to go through what you
- 7:45Speaker 2: normally go through as a player, and you may not
- 7:48Speaker 2: be able to get the full game prep that the
- 7:49Speaker 2: coaching staff wants you to get to be able to
- 7:51Speaker 2: play on Sunday. Assuming Drake May is in Phase four today,
- 7:56Speaker 2: it's probably and maybe they hold him back a little
- 7:58Speaker 2: bit if he's dealing with this, but like he has
- 8:00Speaker 2: the opportunity to go through a normal practice so he
- 8:03Speaker 2: would have if he clears that does phase five on Friday.
- 8:06Speaker 2: He could in theory, we don't know for sure, because
- 8:08Speaker 2: we don't know what's going on out there, he could
- 8:10Speaker 2: in theory have two full days of practice this week.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think what I understand that the policy
- 8:17Speaker 3: or the protocol I should say, is that because he's
- 8:20Speaker 3: a quarterback, basically he has to just stack consecutive days
- 8:24Speaker 3: of practice without symptoms. So if he practices today and
- 8:28Speaker 3: is fine, and practices tomorrow and he's fine, then based
- 8:31Speaker 3: off the protocol, theoretically he should be cleared.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 3: So that that's that's sort of the minutia of it.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I would also just add on top of that, and
- 8:40Speaker 3: then I want to, you know, go back to last week,
- 8:43Speaker 3: but I just want to add on top of that.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Thursday and Friday from a game plan perspective, are the
- 8:49Speaker 3: real nitty gritty detailed days. So Wednesday for the Patriots
- 8:54Speaker 3: and for most teams, I would assume they do it
- 8:56Speaker 3: this way. Wednesday is an early down day and it's
- 9:00Speaker 3: a lot about base concepts, Right. You usually go some
- 9:04Speaker 3: of Wednesday's practice, which is in PAD, so it's the
- 9:07Speaker 3: it's the only fully padded practice of the of the
- 9:09Speaker 3: week most likely. Uh, But most of the time what
- 9:13Speaker 3: you do is you go good on good right, just
- 9:15Speaker 3: like in training camp ones versus one. Yeah, they do
- 9:18Speaker 3: that a decent amount on a on a Wednesday. But
- 9:21Speaker 3: you're talking about first and second down based concepts, so
- 9:26Speaker 3: you're not talking necessarily about game plan install Thursday is big,
- 9:31Speaker 3: big third down day. Thursday is all about third down
- 9:35Speaker 3: and in a little bit red zone. And if you
- 9:38Speaker 3: talk to coaches, they will tell you that that's really
- 9:42Speaker 3: where the game changes week to week. It's not necessarily
- 9:46Speaker 3: first and second down. Everybody kind of has their base runs,
- 9:49Speaker 3: their base pass concepts, their play pass concepts, their early
- 9:53Speaker 3: down quick game like, they all kind of do all that.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Everybody does it across the league. Third down is where
- 10:00Speaker 3: things might get unique, you know, different coverage tendencies for
- 10:03Speaker 3: the opponent, different pass plays for the Patriots. Van Pelt
- 10:07Speaker 3: mentioned this morning that the quarterbacks rank their favorite third
- 10:11Speaker 3: down plays. So Drake May's favorite third down plays are
- 10:14Speaker 3: gonna be different from Jacoby Burssett's favorite third down plays.
- 10:17Speaker 3: So if he long story short, we were talking about
- 10:21Speaker 3: this a little bit yesterday on Unfiltered, would Drake May
- 10:24Speaker 3: have enough practice time to make you feel comfortable with
- 10:28Speaker 3: him playing on Sunday. Not is he healthy and enough
- 10:30Speaker 3: to play on Sunday, but just was he going to
- 10:32Speaker 3: be able to prepare enough to play on Sunday? And
- 10:36Speaker 3: I think practicing today would tell you that he would
- 10:39Speaker 3: have enough time if he.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Does the full practice right, And that's what people need
- 10:43Speaker 2: to understand. It's not as like and girod Mao did
- 10:46Speaker 2: say yesterday, he's like, yeah, I'd be comfortable you know
- 10:48Speaker 2: when he's ready, And that could mean a number of things.
- 10:50Speaker 2: But it's not just about being cleared. You can't get cleared. Like,
- 10:55Speaker 2: even if you're cleared, if the coaches say, well you
- 10:56Speaker 2: didn't practice enough for us to put you in the game,
- 10:58Speaker 2: being clear doesn't mean it. Maybe you get to be
- 11:00Speaker 2: the backup, but like being clear doesn't mean anything. So
- 11:03Speaker 2: he has to be cleared and the team has to
- 11:04Speaker 2: feel he's prepared enough to be ready to go. This
- 11:07Speaker 2: is a rather complex defense. I think, what would they
- 11:09Speaker 2: call it to an unpredictable defense? Right, So there's obviously
- 11:13Speaker 2: some wrinkles to be ready for now. He even be
- 11:15Speaker 2: in the film room yep, at least with Phase three
- 11:17Speaker 2: at the early on with the concussion, like you want
- 11:19Speaker 2: to be in a dark room watching a movie, obviously,
- 11:22Speaker 2: but yeah, it it could come down to just whether
- 11:27Speaker 2: or not they feel he's prepared. If if he gets cleared.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, and we'll get to that Titans defense, which
- 11:33Speaker 3: I think is a nice test if he does play,
- 11:35Speaker 3: I'm pretty excited to see how he plays against this
- 11:39Speaker 3: type of defense because the defenses that he's faced Houston, Jacksonville,
- 11:44Speaker 3: a little bit of the Jets are not necessarily what
- 11:48Speaker 3: I would call spin the dial defenses. Those three defenses
- 11:52Speaker 3: kind of do what they do. They have their system,
- 11:55Speaker 3: they have their tendencies, and they don't really stray too
- 11:58Speaker 3: far away from that too often, whereas the Titans throw
- 12:01Speaker 3: a lot at you schematically, like they're going to be
- 12:03Speaker 3: in a lot of different coverages, a lot of different fronts,
- 12:06Speaker 3: a lot of different things to process from a mental standpoint.
- 12:09Speaker 3: So if he does play on Sunday, I am looking
- 12:12Speaker 3: forward to seeing how he handles that from a mental
- 12:14Speaker 3: load capacity. It's different, you know, different than those like
- 12:18Speaker 3: do what we do type of defenses like he's faced.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I want to go back to last week. I have
- 12:23Speaker 3: a little bit to say about last week as I'm
- 12:25Speaker 3: sure you do as well. But I want to stick
- 12:27Speaker 3: on Drake May because that's the topic of the day today.
- 12:32Speaker 3: So a few things. We talked about it briefly out
- 12:34Speaker 3: at practice. We've talked about it in the past. And
- 12:38Speaker 3: I went back and I had grated his ten dropbacks,
- 12:42Speaker 3: his eighteen plays in this game on Sunday, just like
- 12:45Speaker 3: I would if he had played the entire game. I
- 12:47Speaker 3: had him with four plus plays already. He was cooking, yeah,
- 12:51Speaker 3: a little bit. But with that being said, three of
- 12:55Speaker 3: his four plus plays were out of structure, meaning two
- 13:00Speaker 3: scrambles I had plus plays on, and I had a
- 13:03Speaker 3: plus play on the Thornton throw right, which are all
- 13:06Speaker 3: these the stuff we talk about all the time. The
- 13:09Speaker 3: Josh Allen's, the Patrick mahomes is, he's scrambling, he's out
- 13:12Speaker 3: of structure. It's not how you drew it up playground football.
- 13:17Speaker 3: And it was a topic this morning that was brought
- 13:20Speaker 3: up to Van Pelt a little bit, and I do
- 13:22Speaker 3: think it's an interesting conversation. I have to say, as
- 13:26Speaker 3: much as he was cooking in that game on Sunday,
- 13:29Speaker 3: and as great as the seventeen yard touchdown run was,
- 13:33Speaker 3: I actually came away and granted he didn't get to
- 13:36Speaker 3: play the whole game. I came away from this game
- 13:39Speaker 3: being like, okay, you know, I was a little bit
- 13:41Speaker 3: more impressed kind of by the Jaguars tape, you know,
- 13:44Speaker 3: like I know he can do all this kind of stuff, right, Like,
- 13:47Speaker 3: this is why I wanted to draft him in the
- 13:49Speaker 3: first place. Right is because he can play this way,
- 13:52Speaker 3: and he can be an athlete, and he can turn
- 13:54Speaker 3: a well covered man coverage down into a seventeen yard touchdown.
- 13:57Speaker 3: And he can take a covered play action shot play
- 14:01Speaker 3: down the field and run around for three seconds, three
- 14:04Speaker 3: and a half seconds by himself time and flick it
- 14:07Speaker 3: fifty yards down the field to Taekwon Thoron. Right, Like,
- 14:10Speaker 3: we knew he could do all those types of things.
- 14:12Speaker 3: But it brings up the conversation of risk reward of
- 14:19Speaker 3: he gets hurt.
- 14:20Speaker 2: He got hurt.
- 14:21Speaker 3: He ran three times in this game for eleven, seventeen
- 14:24Speaker 3: and eighteen yards, three big games on the ground with
- 14:27Speaker 3: his legs, but he got hurt and got knocked out
- 14:30Speaker 3: of the game. Van Pelt also mentioned that unless it
- 14:33Speaker 3: was like a special circumstance or a certain situation, the
- 14:37Speaker 3: Patriots probably aren't gonna call very many designed quarterback runs
- 14:41Speaker 3: for Drake May and they haven't called very many of them.
- 14:44Speaker 3: There's been a few where he's kind of holding the
- 14:46Speaker 3: backside of the defense, like at the mesh point, but
- 14:49Speaker 3: I'm not sure if it's really scripted for him to
- 14:51Speaker 3: actually keep it, if he wants to keep it or not.
- 14:53Speaker 3: But he hasn't really had very many, if at all,
- 14:57Speaker 3: true designed quarterback runs, Like there's been no keepers, no draws,
- 15:03Speaker 3: no any of that. Right, So I guess the long
- 15:06Speaker 3: winded way or short way to say this long witted
- 15:10Speaker 3: take is like, how do you feel about him playing
- 15:15Speaker 3: the way he played on Sunday because he had more
- 15:18Speaker 3: rushing yards than he did passing yards when he got
- 15:20Speaker 3: knocked out of the game.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Yeah, he was only two yard shy being their leading
- 15:23Speaker 2: rusher for the game even though he only played a
- 15:25Speaker 2: quarter I so, like you said, having that club in
- 15:29Speaker 2: the bag is important, but he can't be the only
- 15:32Speaker 2: thing you do. And I wonder if some of it
- 15:36Speaker 2: is just what's around him and feeling like, you know,
- 15:41Speaker 2: drops can be mentally tough for a quarterback as much
- 15:44Speaker 2: as they can be for a receiver, because you know,
- 15:45Speaker 2: now you wonder well, you know, can I trust thrown
- 15:48Speaker 2: to this guy? That sort of thing, and if you
- 15:49Speaker 2: have guys dropping passes and the protection is great, it's
- 15:51Speaker 2: been better. But it's like, I think there's gonna be
- 15:54Speaker 2: more of that just in your brain, Like I all right, fine,
- 15:56Speaker 2: I'll do it myself, right, that sort of thing. So I,
- 16:01Speaker 2: like you said the Jaguars game, there's some good instructure stuff,
- 16:04Speaker 2: like he's shown flashes of that. That stuff's exciting what
- 16:07Speaker 2: he did against the Jets, but it's got to come
- 16:08Speaker 2: with some in the script plays too. And he only
- 16:11Speaker 2: played a quarter, so who know, maybe he plays the
- 16:13Speaker 2: rest of the game in script and he plays super well,
- 16:16Speaker 2: Like who the hell knows. So I'm not gonna knock it.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I think I said this to you. I said as
- 16:20Speaker 2: somebody I was walking out, like, if there's one thing
- 16:21Speaker 2: I'm gonna knock from that performance, really, it's slide like
- 16:25Speaker 2: a second sooner that one yard's not worth it. In
- 16:27Speaker 2: a week eight game against the Jets, it was a
- 16:29Speaker 2: little off balance, and yeah, it's the super Bowl, so
- 16:31Speaker 2: that's right. And Van Pelt talked about this this morning, like,
- 16:34Speaker 2: and I know people will say, well, he doesn't need
- 16:36Speaker 2: to do a better job taking care of himself. It
- 16:37Speaker 2: was a dirty hit. Dirty hits are gonna happen, like
- 16:40Speaker 2: you want to avoid those two. Van Pelt mentioned that's
- 16:43Speaker 2: a situation where some quarterbacks might just like fall down, Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 2: head first, crumble that sort of thing. He'll learn, like
- 16:48Speaker 2: learning experienced rookie quarterback. That's going to be part of
- 16:50Speaker 2: this whole thing. Absolutely, But you want to see more
- 16:53Speaker 2: of the instruction stuff. But it's not like we haven't
- 16:55Speaker 2: seen it through three games, like it's been there, you
- 16:58Speaker 2: just didn't really see it in that in that game.
- 17:00Speaker 2: If it becomes a you know, repeated thing, if he
- 17:03Speaker 2: plays this week or you know, if it's against the
- 17:05Speaker 2: Bears and he's sixty minutes of playground football, we have
- 17:08Speaker 2: more to talk about it. I'm not overly concerned with
- 17:11Speaker 2: it right now.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not either, But it's a it's an inner
- 17:17Speaker 3: it's an inner battle for me at times when I'm
- 17:19Speaker 3: when I watch this film back of how do I
- 17:23Speaker 3: really feel.
- 17:25Speaker 2: When assessing me? How do you feel? How do we
- 17:28Speaker 2: kind of say like that, how do we feel? How well?
- 17:31Speaker 3: I'm no, I'm not going ah yeah yet, I'm conflicted.
- 17:35Speaker 3: I am because I wanted this. I'm gonna be frank
- 17:39Speaker 3: like I I or you know, be objective. I wanted
- 17:43Speaker 3: Josh Allen and you didn't, and I got God, do.
- 17:47Speaker 2: You get to turn your back on this place? Style?
- 17:50Speaker 3: But then at the same time, I I see what
- 17:55Speaker 3: you know, maybe now that I'm seeing it up close
- 17:57Speaker 3: every single week, I see more of your side of
- 17:59Speaker 3: the street on it. Because there are times and I
- 18:02Speaker 3: didn't have any like real issues with his decisions to
- 18:06Speaker 3: run when he ran, Yeah, but there are just times
- 18:09Speaker 3: where I do I should he have stayed in the pocket?
- 18:13Speaker 3: Should he not have stayed in the pocket?
- 18:15Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Like it's hard to tell uh.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Down in and down out, like if he's doing if
- 18:20Speaker 3: it's right, you know, if it's smart for him to
- 18:22Speaker 3: do these things.
- 18:22Speaker 2: This is this is the line I always use with
- 18:24Speaker 2: Setch Allen. It's not sustainable, doesn't mean it's not working
- 18:28Speaker 2: in the moment, but you worry. And there may be
- 18:30Speaker 2: some games were like background football is what works and great,
- 18:33Speaker 2: but you can't always rely on that being there. For
- 18:37Speaker 2: a number of reasons. You can't. It needs to be
- 18:41Speaker 2: I'm gonna do what I need to do in structure,
- 18:44Speaker 2: and if I have to bail out and do it
- 18:46Speaker 2: myself like that options on the table. It can't be
- 18:49Speaker 2: the other way around. Yeah, that's an unsustainable way to
- 18:52Speaker 2: play football. And I'm not saying Drake May's there, but
- 18:55Speaker 2: you mentioned like seeing the Josh Allen love it. That's
- 18:58Speaker 2: kind of always been my point with him, and they've
- 19:00Speaker 2: gotten better about it the last couple of years. They
- 19:01Speaker 2: were best at it with Brian day ball.
- 19:03Speaker 3: But like I would say, with the biggest difference, and
- 19:06Speaker 3: look at some of it is that.
- 19:08Speaker 2: He's also a rookie too, like he's got to see
- 19:10Speaker 2: a lot more.
- 19:11Speaker 3: But some of it against Jacksonville is that guys dropped
- 19:14Speaker 3: interceptions right right. But Josh Allen always had a turnover problem,
- 19:17Speaker 3: like that was that was really the big thing with him,
- 19:21Speaker 3: was that the recklessness was leading to turnovers and at
- 19:24Speaker 3: least so far, and again some of it's drop kicks
- 19:27Speaker 3: and luck and all that kind of.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Stuff, but at least so far. Uh.
- 19:31Speaker 3: And I know he turned the ball over a little
- 19:32Speaker 3: bit in his first game, but the last two games
- 19:34Speaker 3: he has not been.
- 19:35Speaker 2: The other thing with Alan for me and I can't
- 19:38Speaker 2: I can't believe we're doing the Josh like I apologize
- 19:40Speaker 2: people who've heard this a thousand times, so I guess
- 19:41Speaker 2: it's new context. The other thing for Alan with me,
- 19:45Speaker 2: and some of this is not necessarily on him, it's
- 19:47Speaker 2: on the team's approach. Yeah, playing that way, you get
- 19:51Speaker 2: beat up, you get hit, and he's I don't want
- 19:53Speaker 2: to say he's never suffered a concussion like we don't,
- 19:55Speaker 2: but like he hasn't had that like injury that's cost
- 19:58Speaker 2: him time. But every year you get to the end
- 20:00Speaker 2: of the year and it's his elbow, or it's his shoulder,
- 20:03Speaker 2: or it's his ankle, right, and it adds up. And
- 20:06Speaker 2: that's why that's another reason why it's not even turnovers.
- 20:08Speaker 2: You go to that well too often when you're running
- 20:11Speaker 2: around outside the pocket, when you're actually taking off and scrambling,
- 20:14Speaker 2: you are gonna get hits. Now, May has shown a
- 20:16Speaker 2: willingness to slide. He needs a slide sooner, but he's
- 20:18Speaker 2: shown a willingness side. Alan takes on every tackler that
- 20:21Speaker 2: comes his way, and that May doesn't seem to have
- 20:23Speaker 2: that problem. That was more of a Jayden Daniel's problem.
- 20:25Speaker 3: When we got back, I have like a little defense
- 20:28Speaker 3: of so he breaks like a tackle right and then
- 20:32Speaker 3: about I think it's like eight or nine yards down
- 20:34Speaker 3: the field. So he breaks the tackle and he's like
- 20:36Speaker 3: stumbling off balance. So like as much as you want
- 20:39Speaker 3: him to slide sooner, like he's not. He doesn't have
- 20:42Speaker 3: his feature.
- 20:43Speaker 2: But this is my well one, so do you My
- 20:45Speaker 2: point is, though, is that if you wanted him to slide,
- 20:48Speaker 2: then he would have slided before the initial content slider
- 20:51Speaker 2: you can just go down and keep yourself up like
- 20:53Speaker 2: you can.
- 20:54Speaker 3: But like I don't as an athlete, like I don't
- 20:56Speaker 3: think that it was that he was fighting for every
- 20:58Speaker 3: single yard. I think he was trying to like get
- 21:01Speaker 3: his balance.
- 21:01Speaker 2: So and even within that again, like if you play
- 21:04Speaker 2: this way, these things are gonna happen. Yeah, And that's
- 21:07Speaker 2: that's where I get concerned with being becoming too reliant
- 21:10Speaker 2: on it is these kind of players are gonna happen.
- 21:14Speaker 2: And look, I know we did this whole thing when
- 21:16Speaker 2: when it was started or not about like, yes, it's football,
- 21:19Speaker 2: guys get hurt. Yeah, all that, there is a balance
- 21:23Speaker 2: of risk reward and you do want to limit it.
- 21:25Speaker 2: And do you like there's gonna be a handful of
- 21:28Speaker 2: those plays every game? How many you're Okay, two or three, Yeah,
- 21:32Speaker 2: you can probably even go up from there. We're gonna
- 21:34Speaker 2: start talking like eight to ten of those plays a game.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Now you're probably talking under nenecessary risks unless we're talking
- 21:39Speaker 2: about like the super Bowl and what is the happy medium?
- 21:42Speaker 2: I don't know. This is what I've always bashed the
- 21:44Speaker 2: Bills for is that they think there's just this do
- 21:47Speaker 2: doesn't have to be a bit day. Well know because
- 21:49Speaker 2: now I'm on the other side of it, and I
- 21:51Speaker 2: just because people, oh, you're a Bills hater. No, I'll
- 21:52Speaker 2: say the same thing about the Patriots. John. Is there
- 21:55Speaker 2: an equilibrium where you do it enough that it's impactful,
- 21:59Speaker 2: but you don't do it too much where it becomes reckless.
- 22:01Speaker 3: So we've sort of talked about this enough that I
- 22:05Speaker 3: feel like I have narrowed down my take on it.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 22:08Speaker 3: What I didn't love about this game was that he
- 22:11Speaker 3: this was early and often that he was taking off
- 22:13Speaker 3: running right like this was rose quarter, right out of
- 22:16Speaker 3: the shoot if it I would like to see him
- 22:21Speaker 3: save these things for those gotta have it moments like
- 22:24Speaker 3: fourth quarter they need to drive and look the touchdown
- 22:29Speaker 3: run that he had on Sunday against the Jets. To me,
- 22:31Speaker 3: that's in a little bit of a different category because
- 22:34Speaker 3: like he just sees the end zone.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Like, I don't think he's gonna get lit up in
- 22:38Speaker 2: this issue.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Good to say it, right, But what I'm talking about
- 22:41Speaker 3: is between the twenties, you know, taking off unless you
- 22:44Speaker 3: really see the sea's part and you have like forty
- 22:47Speaker 3: yards of green grass in front of you, and obviously
- 22:50Speaker 3: you know, I'm all for taking the that uh that
- 22:53Speaker 3: those yards, But what I think both of us would
- 22:57Speaker 3: like to see is it's fourth down or it's it's
- 23:00Speaker 3: fourth quarter, two minute drive, game on the line.
- 23:04Speaker 2: The only way that you're.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Gonna convert this third down is if he takes off
- 23:08Speaker 3: or if he makes an eye of structure play or
- 23:10Speaker 3: something like that. But the rest of the game, for
- 23:12Speaker 3: the most part, he's playing within himself. Ironically, think that's
- 23:15Speaker 3: where they need to get him to.
- 23:17Speaker 2: So ironically, I'm talking about to drive Jacoby Brissett let
- 23:21Speaker 2: at the end of the day. That's basically and he
- 23:22Speaker 2: had the one play where he ran and it was
- 23:24Speaker 2: a good run, nice little scoot there from Jacoby Brissett,
- 23:27Speaker 2: But besides that, it was you know, back foot or
- 23:31Speaker 2: defender at your legs, balls out Kishan, but he makes
- 23:34Speaker 2: a great catch. But yeah, that's yeah. Honestly, like that
- 23:38Speaker 2: last drive from Jakoba, the heck of the dry that
- 23:41Speaker 2: is not a bad blueprint.
- 23:42Speaker 3: It's very conflicting for me because I love watching it,
- 23:45Speaker 3: Like I look, I'm infatuated by guys that can do
- 23:50Speaker 3: what Drake can do. I think, especially because I know
- 23:56Speaker 3: when the scheme doesn't work or the receivers don't do
- 23:59Speaker 3: their jobs and they don't get open, like to have
- 24:01Speaker 3: that quarterback that has a left hand like that can
- 24:05Speaker 3: just okay, there's really nothing here on this play, but
- 24:08Speaker 3: it's not a dead play with Drake may it's a
- 24:11Speaker 3: seventeen yard touchdown, or it's a thirty yard dump off
- 24:14Speaker 3: to Hunter Henry off script or like whatever the case
- 24:17Speaker 3: may be. The amount of like margin for error, like
- 24:21Speaker 3: the way that that increases like almost like your expected
- 24:25Speaker 3: points is like just insane because it adds so much
- 24:29Speaker 3: to what you're just doing schematically. Like it's one thing
- 24:32Speaker 3: to just have a quarterback that can go out there
- 24:34Speaker 3: and hit the layups and like move the offense that way.
- 24:37Speaker 3: When you have a quarterback that's a true playmaker, at
- 24:40Speaker 3: the position. Ye, it's so much easier for everybody involved,
- 24:43Speaker 3: including the play call.
- 24:44Speaker 2: There's there's there's some that comes with that too that
- 24:48Speaker 2: makes it tougher to manage, I guess, which is what
- 24:49Speaker 2: you're learning watching him.
- 24:51Speaker 3: Tough to manage for him, Like he's obviously has to
- 24:53Speaker 3: stay healthy, right, and and that's that's number one thing
- 24:56Speaker 3: with any quarterback. And h it did cross my mind
- 24:58Speaker 3: across all of our minds sitting there watching the game,
- 25:01Speaker 3: like god, dang it, like now he's freaking hurt, like right,
- 25:04Speaker 3: Like you know, you're two games into this thing, two
- 25:06Speaker 3: plus games he's played great, well watch and then he
- 25:09Speaker 3: gets hurt.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Like you talk about how Patriots fans are gonna have
- 25:13Speaker 2: to learn to watch a different style of quarter Yeah, right,
- 25:17Speaker 2: it's a big thing and brat like obviously Matt Jones,
- 25:20Speaker 2: Tom Brady very different skill set, but the prototype is
- 25:24Speaker 2: the same. Yeah, And I think there's always been this
- 25:26Speaker 2: expectation to way the quarterback stays healthy. Right, that's just
- 25:29Speaker 2: because Brak was always because he was never really in
- 25:32Speaker 2: harm's way. This is not the first time Drake May
- 25:34Speaker 2: is gonna get banged up. Oh no, it's not. It's
- 25:37Speaker 2: not the last time, not even the first time this
- 25:39Speaker 2: year he was on the injury reportment. That's right, and
- 25:41Speaker 2: like there there might be times Josh Allen's kind of
- 25:44Speaker 2: an anomaly in this like the guys that play that way
- 25:46Speaker 2: when Patrick Mahomes, I guess, but like.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Well, I think the difference and this is you know,
- 25:50Speaker 3: this is well down the road and probably like not
- 25:52Speaker 3: that important right now, but the better comparison is and
- 25:59Speaker 3: he obviously ran a lot by design, but Cam Newton
- 26:04Speaker 3: his career was shortened because the body blows that he took,
- 26:08Speaker 3: like eventually, he was not a guy that played twenty
- 26:10Speaker 3: years at the position like Brady, like Manning, Like I'm
- 26:14Speaker 3: assuming Mahomes is probably gonna make it pretty far because
- 26:18Speaker 3: you know, those guys have made it this far because
- 26:20Speaker 3: they weren't running all the time like Cam Newton was.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Josh Allen is an interesting second litmus test of that
- 26:28Speaker 3: to a degree, like is he going to have a
- 26:30Speaker 3: twenty year He should based off of the way the
- 26:33Speaker 3: rules are now and everything you can't touch the quarterback,
- 26:36Speaker 3: he should have a twenty year career. But if he
- 26:38Speaker 3: keeps playing the way that he plays, will he And
- 26:42Speaker 3: same goes for Drake May. Now, I know we're putting
- 26:44Speaker 3: the car before the horse a little bit because they
- 26:46Speaker 3: he hasn't proven that he can have a five year career,
- 26:48Speaker 3: let alone a twenty year career just yet. But I
- 26:51Speaker 3: think where all of us see that he's gonna be
- 26:54Speaker 3: pretty good. We think, and now you're starting to talk
- 26:58Speaker 3: about longevity not only over the course of a season,
- 27:00Speaker 3: but over the course of his career as well. So
- 27:03Speaker 3: I don't want to make a too big a deal
- 27:04Speaker 3: out of it. That makes it sound a lot more
- 27:07Speaker 3: of a big deal than it probably is. But it's
- 27:10Speaker 3: an important point and it was something that I was
- 27:13Speaker 3: actually going to bring up even before Van Pelt spoke
- 27:15Speaker 3: this morning, because that I told you I had four
- 27:18Speaker 3: plus plays for him in this game. Three of them
- 27:21Speaker 3: were out of structure. They had one plus throw from
- 27:24Speaker 3: the pocket, you know from that instructor on script type
- 27:27Speaker 3: of throw.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's only sixteen place dropbacks, eighteen plays, ten dropbacks.
- 27:32Speaker 3: All right, So moving on from that, and if you
- 27:35Speaker 3: want to weigh in on that, of course, eight five
- 27:37Speaker 3: to five. Pat's five hundred is the phone number and
- 27:40Speaker 3: podcasts plural podcast we're getting some questions about that. It's
- 27:43Speaker 3: not podcast. It's podcasts at Patriots dot com. So give
- 27:48Speaker 3: us a call, give us a ring, give us an email,
- 27:50Speaker 3: and we'll get to you guys here in a second.
- 27:53Speaker 3: But I do want to talk a little bit about
- 27:54Speaker 3: this game outside of the eighteen plays that Drake May played.
- 27:58Speaker 2: So we've done the Drake May of it all. I
- 28:00Speaker 2: want to talk about the response. And I get it.
- 28:05Speaker 3: They won the game, so you're gonna get well, they
- 28:09Speaker 3: responded to their coach and they were the soft comments,
- 28:13Speaker 3: and you know, they bounced back and the resilience, and
- 28:16Speaker 3: I really do believe that they showed great mental toughness
- 28:21Speaker 3: in this game. They had all the reason in the
- 28:23Speaker 3: world for the week that they had off the field,
- 28:26Speaker 3: They had all the reason in the world to let
- 28:28Speaker 3: go of the rope. They lose their starting core or
- 28:30Speaker 3: back a quarter into the game, that's another reason to
- 28:32Speaker 3: let go of the rope. And they didn't, and did
- 28:35Speaker 3: Jegoi Brissett's credit. He was a big part of that.
- 28:38Speaker 3: He came in and he made sure that they stayed
- 28:40Speaker 3: on the tracks and they stayed pulling in the same direction.
- 28:44Speaker 3: That to me though, is different than well, now they're
- 28:48Speaker 3: not soft anymore. You know what I mean, like it's
- 28:52Speaker 3: it's a different They're not mentally soft, maybe, but I
- 28:57Speaker 3: want to go over some of the things that I
- 28:58Speaker 3: saw in this game that suggests that in terms of physically,
- 29:03Speaker 3: like they didn't necessarily respond. You know, I'm trying to
- 29:07Speaker 3: get at like mentally, I give him a lot of credit.
- 29:11Speaker 3: They still didn't cover kicks well, forty yard punt return happens.
- 29:16Speaker 3: They still couldn't run the ball a lick in this game.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Yeah thin, it was like two point two yards per
- 29:20Speaker 2: carry outside of May and.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, couldn't run the ball at all. I have
- 29:23Speaker 3: some stats on that we'll get to. And they stopped
- 29:27Speaker 3: the interior run game from the Jets. The Jets still
- 29:30Speaker 3: carved him up on the edges in this game in
- 29:33Speaker 3: the run game, So they stop the run, run the ball,
- 29:36Speaker 3: cover kicks, toughness mantra. Uh, they really didn't check very
- 29:42Speaker 3: many of those boxes, if we're gonna be honest. But
- 29:44Speaker 3: I do have some things that I think that they
- 29:45Speaker 3: did better in this game. But I just want to
- 29:48Speaker 3: hear your take on that whole thing. And I have
- 29:50Speaker 3: some numbers, like I said that I want to read off.
- 29:52Speaker 3: But you know, I felt like it was a response,
- 29:55Speaker 3: but I don't necessarily think it was responding to the
- 29:57Speaker 3: thing that people thought it was.
- 29:59Speaker 2: If that makes sense. Look, it's it's definitely a response,
- 30:01Speaker 2: and I think that the message got through. You know,
- 30:04Speaker 2: you mentioned some of the stuff in the game. Was
- 30:06Speaker 2: it the toughest football game I've ever seen played? Certainly not.
- 30:10Speaker 2: I think they were tougher than they've been the last
- 30:13Speaker 2: few weeks. But you can't. So Gerdmeo pressed that button right,
- 30:17Speaker 2: He went out and you know, said in the media
- 30:20Speaker 2: the team was soft, and he'd set it behind closed doors,
- 30:23Speaker 2: went out, said it in the media, like that button's
- 30:27Speaker 2: been pressed, right, Yeah, that that's been said, and you
- 30:30Speaker 2: our response, well, now does it continue? Right, Because if
- 30:35Speaker 2: you're gonna respond for one game and go back to it,
- 30:37Speaker 2: that doesn't really mean anything. He can't call them soft
- 30:40Speaker 2: media every week. He could, but eventually it's gonna lose,
- 30:43Speaker 2: it's gonna look weird, it's gonna lose his power all that. So,
- 30:45Speaker 2: you know, to get that buy in for one game
- 30:48Speaker 2: from the coaching staff is good, but you gotta be
- 30:50Speaker 2: able to sustain it. If you're this coaching staff and
- 30:52Speaker 2: you've got to now build towards that just being the
- 30:54Speaker 2: level and that's my thing. Like it's a good first
- 30:57Speaker 2: step towards digging out of what ailed them the previous
- 31:00Speaker 2: few weeks. It's a good first step. But if that's
- 31:02Speaker 2: as far as they're gonna go, no, the coaching staff
- 31:04Speaker 2: needs to continue to push, uh, because I don't think
- 31:07Speaker 2: that that identity is fully set yet.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Okay, so I'll get to their flowers in the second,
- 31:12Speaker 3: I promise. I know they won the game, and I'm gonna.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Come ups and downs or are we just doing big pictures?
- 31:17Speaker 3: A big picture for us. I have my ups and
- 31:18Speaker 3: downs and then we're gonna do ups and downs to
- 31:20Speaker 3: actually do it. Of course, because they got a new phone.
- 31:22Speaker 3: I don't know if they went in the new phone.
- 31:23Speaker 3: Of course you didn't have it. You didn't do it,
- 31:25Speaker 3: they did.
- 31:25Speaker 2: No, I have him, I have them. I did it,
- 31:27Speaker 2: but I did it before I got the new phone.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Okay, loving this new pid. All I hear about, like
- 31:33Speaker 3: five years, all I hear about is how he has
- 31:35Speaker 3: a new phone.
- 31:35Speaker 2: One. Look at this one does this? It does that?
- 31:39Speaker 3: Like you're like a kid on Christmas that that gets
- 31:41Speaker 3: a new PlayStation. Oh my god, look a you're you're
- 31:45Speaker 3: you're all too old for.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Toys, all right, never too Olterra toys, never two Altra toys.
- 31:50Speaker 2: You're never too old Candy, Happy Halloween.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Alex Bars mission statement. There you go, all right, so quickly,
- 31:59Speaker 3: and then I do want to give them, give them
- 32:00Speaker 3: some flowers, all right, because I have some positive things
- 32:02Speaker 3: to say to the Patriots rushing attack, their rush offense.
- 32:08Speaker 3: You're ready for this stat? Hit me minus thirty one
- 32:12Speaker 3: yards before contact? Would they finish with minus thirty one?
- 32:18Speaker 3: And that is by the running backs, just the running bait.
- 32:20Speaker 2: So that doesn't include Drake may like getting hit and scrambling. Correct,
- 32:24Speaker 2: minus thirty one. I hadn't seen that.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Wow, So minus thirty one yards before contact. So that
- 32:31Speaker 3: means that they're going backwards. Okay, And to his credit,
- 32:34Speaker 3: Ramandre Stevenson broke seven tackles in this game and just
- 32:38Speaker 3: kind of.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Putting the team on backwards. Doesn't that mean like they
- 32:40Speaker 2: were hit behind the line of Yeah, So.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Minus thirty one yards before contact in this game. That
- 32:47Speaker 3: is the lowest number of the season outside of one game,
- 32:52Speaker 3: the second lowest number of the season for the entire
- 32:55Speaker 3: NFL league through eight weeks that the Titans against the
- 32:59Speaker 3: Dolphins the Titans had the lower that they had.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Well, do you remember after week two there was that
- 33:04Speaker 2: stat that went around that Ramondre scenes that he probably
- 33:06Speaker 2: did again had more yards after contact than total yards.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Sure did.
- 33:10Speaker 3: He had fifty nine yards after contact, he had forty
- 33:13Speaker 3: eight total yards.
- 33:14Speaker 2: That's okay.
- 33:16Speaker 3: So they still can't run the ball at all offensively,
- 33:21Speaker 3: that that's a big problem. Okay, Defensively, run the ball,
- 33:27Speaker 3: stop the run cover kicks, right, those are the those
- 33:29Speaker 3: are the three bucks, hits, three boxes. Defensively on runs
- 33:35Speaker 3: outside the tackles, not runs on the interior, runs on
- 33:40Speaker 3: the outside outside the tackles. The Jets had eighty four
- 33:43Speaker 3: yards on sixteen carries. That's five point three yards per carry.
- 33:48Speaker 3: So they came into this game, the Jets, and to
- 33:50Speaker 3: their credit, they had some game plan plays. It seemed
- 33:53Speaker 3: like early on out of their two back sets, a
- 33:56Speaker 3: couple of the tosses outside to breassee Hall that worked.
- 34:00Speaker 3: But they still for the most part pretty much gashed
- 34:03Speaker 3: the Patriots on the outside run game.
- 34:05Speaker 2: So we have not run the ball.
- 34:08Speaker 3: We have only stopped half the runs, right, we stopped
- 34:12Speaker 3: half the runs, and then on special teams they gave
- 34:15Speaker 3: up another forty yard punt return in this game. So
- 34:18Speaker 3: when I say that this wasn't a soft response, this
- 34:22Speaker 3: was a better version of the football that they've been playing.
- 34:26Speaker 3: That's what I'm talking about, and those are the numbers
- 34:29Speaker 3: to back it up. So as much as I want
- 34:31Speaker 3: to give them their flowers, I don't think they won
- 34:33Speaker 3: this game because the coach called us soft and we're
- 34:36Speaker 3: going to show him right Like, I don't feel that way.
- 34:39Speaker 3: I feel like they did some things better that they
- 34:42Speaker 3: were already doing right and that was the big thing.
- 34:46Speaker 3: So on the positive side, I do think this coaching
- 34:50Speaker 3: staff deserves some credit for some things that they've done. Mainly,
- 34:54Speaker 3: I would say the number one thing that has improved
- 34:57Speaker 3: for this entire Patriots team right now over the last
- 35:01Speaker 3: couple of weeks is pass protection. They have gotten much
- 35:03Speaker 3: much better. It is basically stabilized in the pass protection
- 35:07Speaker 3: going on almost a month now of football game. So
- 35:09Speaker 3: I'll give you the stats. Last week. They allowed a
- 35:13Speaker 3: thirty point six pressure rate in Week eight. Yep, that's
- 35:17Speaker 3: pretty good. Right around thirty percent is where you want
- 35:20Speaker 3: to be.
- 35:20Speaker 2: I've talked about a lot. You've heard me use the
- 35:22Speaker 2: word baseline, right, It's yeah, solid.
- 35:27Speaker 3: In the first five weeks of this season, they were
- 35:30Speaker 3: allowing a league worst pressure rate of forty six percent.
- 35:34Speaker 2: What is that off? Is that PFF next Gen? I
- 35:37Speaker 2: thought next Gen had them, somebody had them at fifty.
- 35:38Speaker 2: They were like it, exactly fifty. Oh, we are not
- 35:40Speaker 2: getting bogged down by which so no, you know it
- 35:43Speaker 2: was Brissette's last start was fifty. It was the exact game.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Forty six percent. That's too high. Either way, it's too high.
- 35:48Speaker 3: So almost half the dropbacks are getting pressured in the
- 35:50Speaker 3: first five weeks two and the last three games they're
- 35:54Speaker 3: down to thirty five percent. So that's an eleven percent
- 35:59Speaker 3: UH improvement, which is significant significant. So they've gotten a
- 36:03Speaker 3: lot better in pass protection. I would say that the
- 36:06Speaker 3: biggest thing that they've improved is free runners to the quarterback.
- 36:09Speaker 3: You don't see guys coming through the a's and the
- 36:11Speaker 3: b gaps as often. UH free and and cart blaunched
- 36:14Speaker 3: the quarterback. H Vederian Lowe when he's been healthy, has
- 36:17Speaker 3: been solid. At left tackle. Ben Brown has been fine.
- 36:22Speaker 3: I mean, I don't want to get too jazzed up
- 36:24Speaker 3: about Ben Brown, but where he's come from, and you know,
- 36:29Speaker 3: getting him off a practice squad and bringing him in
- 36:31Speaker 3: here and you know, thrusting him into starting duties and
- 36:35Speaker 3: all that more than okay. Right for the circumstance, I
- 36:40Speaker 3: think Trey Jacobs has been okay wherever they've put him
- 36:43Speaker 3: over the last couple of weeks. So those three guys
- 36:46Speaker 3: have really stepped up and they've gotten a lot better.
- 36:48Speaker 3: Their continuity has gotten a lot better, and they are
- 36:52Speaker 3: giving this passing game a chance. And now that I
- 36:56Speaker 3: see some protection and some time for these places to develop,
- 37:01Speaker 3: you're starting to see some of the passing designs and
- 37:05Speaker 3: concepts that they're running. From a schematic perspective, you're starting
- 37:09Speaker 3: to see the method to the madness, right, Yeah, You're
- 37:13Speaker 3: starting to see some open receivers. You're starting to see
- 37:16Speaker 3: Van Pelt scheme up some stuff and cook up some things,
- 37:19Speaker 3: and all of a sudden, you're like, Okay, I can
- 37:21Speaker 3: see what they're doing. You know, they're high low in
- 37:23Speaker 3: this guy, they're reading off that guy there. You know,
- 37:26Speaker 3: the basic game winning throw to Kaysehan Booty. Uh, it's
- 37:31Speaker 3: a it's a all out pressure cover zero check five
- 37:35Speaker 3: per set and they have the two incuts and then
- 37:38Speaker 3: they have the deep post and if the safety comes
- 37:40Speaker 3: down on the incut, He's gonna throw the post and
- 37:42Speaker 3: vice versa. The safety stays back, I'll throw the incut.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Like you can start to see the uh, the schematic
- 37:49Speaker 3: like taking hold right, the scheme, taking hold of like
- 37:53Speaker 3: what coverage defenders they're trying to conflict and all that
- 37:56Speaker 3: kind of stuff. So I know that's all like pretty,
- 37:59Speaker 3: you know, dense, But my point is is that it's
- 38:03Speaker 3: all it's working hand in hand that the pass protection
- 38:06Speaker 3: has improved. So now all of a sudden, I'm starting
- 38:09Speaker 3: to see Alex van Pelt come out right like and
- 38:11Speaker 3: be like, Okay, this is what I can give van
- 38:13Speaker 3: Pelt credit for for what they're doing. So their their
- 38:16Speaker 3: route combinations are suddenly working again, right, and and that's
- 38:21Speaker 3: great to see. So this whole passing game looks a
- 38:24Speaker 3: lot better, and I think it starts up front.
- 38:26Speaker 2: And I think it's the continuity. I know people have said,
- 38:28Speaker 2: well it got better with Drake May to kide to
- 38:30Speaker 2: this stat and it's a good one. So the pressure
- 38:32Speaker 2: rate on May last week was thirty percent. With Persette
- 38:35Speaker 2: it was thirty point eight, so nearly identical. Yeah, I
- 38:40Speaker 2: just think you last week was the same time they
- 38:42Speaker 2: put the same unit out twice, Yeah, and that means
- 38:44Speaker 2: something like that matters. These guys get used to playing
- 38:46Speaker 2: with each other. We were talking about this earlier. I'd
- 38:49Speaker 2: stick with this group. I would not touch this group
- 38:52Speaker 2: as it exists right now. Leyden Robinson's gonna come back. Great.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Let them watch, Let them watch. I think you have
- 38:59Speaker 2: what it's low low, Jorge Jordan Browrown to Winn Jacobs.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Let it ride. Let it ride until they give you
- 39:07Speaker 2: a reason not to. Because you're actually building some continuity
- 39:10Speaker 2: now and that can help, and that's gonna impact. Like
- 39:13Speaker 2: the free Rushers thing, guys know where to be. They're
- 39:15Speaker 2: getting understanding of how the guys on their left and
- 39:17Speaker 2: their right play and it it makes it easier. So
- 39:21Speaker 2: I think that they have kind of found a best
- 39:24Speaker 2: five yeah, and are letting them work together. That that's important.
- 39:28Speaker 2: That makes a difference. And you're seeing that lay out
- 39:30Speaker 2: in real time, Yeah, you are.
- 39:32Speaker 3: And you know it's a bummer because the play got
- 39:34Speaker 3: wiped out by a holding penalty on Michael Jordan. That
- 39:37Speaker 3: was like borderline, but for the first time maybe all season.
- 39:41Speaker 3: The explosive that they ran the Hunter Henry that got
- 39:44Speaker 3: called back because of the penalty. That was one of
- 39:47Speaker 3: the first times all season where I was like, Holy hell,
- 39:51Speaker 3: is at a good scheme right? Like dang, So you
- 39:53Speaker 3: know they're running spot concept, so flat little curl inside
- 39:59Speaker 3: like an inside hitch, and with the usually it's pair
- 40:01Speaker 3: with like a corner post, right, it kind of can
- 40:03Speaker 3: break it either way depending on the coverage. And so
- 40:06Speaker 3: Henry fakes like he's gonna sit in between the zone
- 40:10Speaker 3: and then like spins out of it and just wheels
- 40:13Speaker 3: out of it up the sideline, and it's just a
- 40:16Speaker 3: great counter to the spot concept. But it only works
- 40:20Speaker 3: if they have some time in the pocket for it
- 40:22Speaker 3: to matriculate down the field. Otherwise you're not gonna be
- 40:25Speaker 3: able to run what's essentially like a double move by
- 40:27Speaker 3: Hunter Henry. You're not gonna have time to do it.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Now had to avoid pressure and then throw the football.
- 40:32Speaker 3: But the general point I'm getting at is that when
- 40:36Speaker 3: you have time in the pocket, shocker, you actually are
- 40:39Speaker 3: able to run some things in the passing game that
- 40:41Speaker 3: you might not be able to run before. And it's
- 40:43Speaker 3: been good to see that because now I feel like
- 40:46Speaker 3: I can really start to properly evaluate Alex Van pelt
- 40:50Speaker 3: As a schemer in the passing game, whereas the first
- 40:52Speaker 3: you know, four or five weeks of the season, it
- 40:55Speaker 3: felt difficult to do that at times because of how
- 40:57Speaker 3: bad the pass pro was. And I also give kudos
- 41:00Speaker 3: to Scott Peters, Coogler's Peters, those guys. They're doing a
- 41:03Speaker 3: really good job too of getting these guys ready to
- 41:06Speaker 3: play and taking these scrap heap guys that Elliot Wolf
- 41:10Speaker 3: has gotten for him and turning Ben Brown into a
- 41:13Speaker 3: competent center and Trey Jacobs into a competent tackle, and
- 41:17Speaker 3: you know, so on and so forth. That's not easy
- 41:18Speaker 3: to do and they've been able to do it. So
- 41:20Speaker 3: credit to Peters as well as a VP to that department.
- 41:23Speaker 2: That's kind of one big picture take I have on
- 41:26Speaker 2: this season as a whole is that. And this was
- 41:30Speaker 2: on so your take at the beginning of the year
- 41:32Speaker 2: was like trusting Scott Peters strike system, baby, Like, not
- 41:36Speaker 2: that the line's been great, but when you look at
- 41:38Speaker 2: what they've been given, like you said, there's a new
- 41:39Speaker 2: guy coming in off the street. It feels like almost
- 41:41Speaker 2: every week and every week we're saying like it's not great,
- 41:44Speaker 2: but it probably could have been worse. It probably should
- 41:46Speaker 2: have been worse. Imagine this offensive line staff when they
- 41:50Speaker 2: get like five, you know, high caliber players that are
- 41:54Speaker 2: out there every single week and can work together. Right,
- 41:57Speaker 2: you're just scratching the surface. So one thing I will
- 41:59Speaker 2: say is I feel very good about Scott Peters through
- 42:02Speaker 2: the first eight weeks. I'm actually very encouraging his staff
- 42:05Speaker 2: by extension. Yeah, I'm very encouraged by what I've seen
- 42:07Speaker 2: from Scott Peters through the first eight weeks.
- 42:09Speaker 3: Yeah, Look, their system works. We know it works because
- 42:12Speaker 3: it worked in Cleveland. So like what they're teaching their tenants,
- 42:16Speaker 3: their fundamentals, their scheme.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Clearly it works.
- 42:21Speaker 3: You just have to have the right guys to be
- 42:23Speaker 3: able to execute it. You have to have the personnel
- 42:25Speaker 3: to be able to execute it. So that's why I
- 42:28Speaker 3: at the beginning was maybe a little bit you know,
- 42:32Speaker 3: bullish on Scott Peters, was because I've seen this scheme,
- 42:37Speaker 3: this Bill Callahan scheme we will talk about later take
- 42:41Speaker 3: hold and work in other places. So it's not the scheme,
- 42:44Speaker 3: it's not the coaching, it's not the fundamentals, it's not
- 42:47Speaker 3: the tenants of the scheme. You just have to get
- 42:49Speaker 3: the right guys in here that can actually go out
- 42:51Speaker 3: there and execute it. And when I asked Van Pelt
- 42:53Speaker 3: about it this morning, that's sort of what he was
- 42:56Speaker 3: mentioning was, you know, we've been able to build and
- 42:59Speaker 3: now we have eight weeks of games and eight weeks
- 43:02Speaker 3: of practices and drills and reps and reps and reps
- 43:05Speaker 3: and reps, and it's starting to settle down a little bit,
- 43:08Speaker 3: which is good to see. All Right, Moving on to
- 43:11Speaker 3: the other side of the ball. I have two bouquets
- 43:14Speaker 3: to give to the defense, all right. The first one
- 43:18Speaker 3: I've been clamoring for it for weeks. I'm glad that
- 43:21Speaker 3: we're finally coming to this point in time with this
- 43:24Speaker 3: defense a forty eight percent man coverage rate in this
- 43:28Speaker 3: game against the Jets. Right, you go out there and
- 43:32Speaker 3: play man to man. You have the guys to do it.
- 43:34Speaker 3: You have Christian Gonzalez who can take any number one
- 43:38Speaker 3: receiver in the league and go to toe to toe
- 43:40Speaker 3: with that guy for four quarters. We've seen him do
- 43:42Speaker 3: that weekend and week out, going all the way back
- 43:44Speaker 3: to his rookie season. Although he got picked on a
- 43:47Speaker 3: little bit in this game. I think both Joneses can
- 43:49Speaker 3: cover pretty well in Manta. Man, you have the guys
- 43:52Speaker 3: dugger mapu. You know, if you want to go man
- 43:54Speaker 3: to man on a tight end, you have that capability
- 43:56Speaker 3: to do that as well. This defense needs to play
- 43:59Speaker 3: more manton man. They need to play more mant to man.
- 44:02Speaker 3: They need to play more post safety to get that
- 44:04Speaker 3: extra hat in the box, whether it's to stop the run,
- 44:06Speaker 3: it's to blitz the quarterback, whatever the case may be.
- 44:09Speaker 3: That's what they were able to do this week. Like
- 44:12Speaker 3: I said, Marcus Jones got picked on a little bit
- 44:14Speaker 3: in this game, but on the whole, it did its job.
- 44:17Speaker 3: And they had some really really good third down reps
- 44:21Speaker 3: in this game, kind of matching coverage right like cutting
- 44:25Speaker 3: off crossing routes and switching and bracketing guys if you
- 44:29Speaker 3: want to call it that. So they had some really
- 44:31Speaker 3: high level, I thought coverage reps in this game third
- 44:35Speaker 3: down right around the fifty yard line. Early red zone rep.
- 44:38Speaker 3: Christian Elysis sack was a big play in the game.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Really good bracket call there on Adams and Wilson. So
- 44:45Speaker 3: these are the types of things that you have seen
- 44:47Speaker 3: the Belichick defenses do in the past that are kind
- 44:50Speaker 3: of like you know, PhD level coverages that they're now
- 44:55Speaker 3: starting to be able to be able to execute in
- 44:57Speaker 3: the back end. So some of that stuff we saw
- 45:00Speaker 3: earlier on in the year, like the Mad zones and
- 45:03Speaker 3: the Baltimore stuff that they were trying to implement, we're
- 45:06Speaker 3: starting to see that phase out a little bit week
- 45:08Speaker 3: by week, and we're starting to see a lot more
- 45:10Speaker 3: of those Belichick era stuff, you know, cover seven one
- 45:14Speaker 3: cross that kind of thing, which I think is a
- 45:17Speaker 3: good sign.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I think specifically that man coverage, and you know,
- 45:22Speaker 2: is the pass rush continues to struggle, they're going to
- 45:25Speaker 2: have to cover longer playing and simple so it's a
- 45:27Speaker 2: little bit you know, man gives them some advantage. And yeah,
- 45:31Speaker 2: I'd say it's pretty good.
- 45:33Speaker 3: I just good to Covington and that staff because I thought,
- 45:36Speaker 3: you know, you can call it simplifying if you want
- 45:38Speaker 3: to call it simplifying.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Nothing wrong with simplifying if it works right it.
- 45:42Speaker 3: Just as Devon Gotshaw perfectly put it, after the game,
- 45:47Speaker 3: stop all the cute shit, right, like, stop doing all
- 45:50Speaker 3: of the like, oh we can we're gonna drop this guy,
- 45:52Speaker 3: and we're gonna rush that guy, and we're gonna spin
- 45:55Speaker 3: it this way and we're matching zones and things like
- 45:57Speaker 3: stop it, stop it. Just our guys against your guys.
- 46:01Speaker 3: I thought they did it on the interior run defense
- 46:03Speaker 3: as well, which is the other flower bouquet. I wanted
- 46:06Speaker 3: to toss to them. Yeah on Uh, well, I got
- 46:09Speaker 3: the numbers two point three yards per carry on runs
- 46:12Speaker 3: between the tacks. Dietrich Wise I thought was really good
- 46:17Speaker 3: in this game. Jeremiah Farms kind of got it started
- 46:20Speaker 3: with a nice run stuff early. Uh Tavay and Christian
- 46:23Speaker 3: Ellis were much better in this game against the run.
- 46:25Speaker 2: I thought, Uh Gotsha delivered.
- 46:28Speaker 3: That fantastic line of stopping all the cute shit, But
- 46:31Speaker 3: he also talked about getting back to some of the
- 46:33Speaker 3: basic front mechanics that they've run over the years recently
- 46:38Speaker 3: and stopping all the cute shit, you know, all the
- 46:42Speaker 3: run blitzes and stunts and games and things like that.
- 46:45Speaker 2: The thing about defense in the NFL, or just in
- 46:47Speaker 2: football in general, if you're good enough and look, they
- 46:52Speaker 2: have their talent deficiencies, but relative to the opponent, if
- 46:55Speaker 2: you're good enough line up and play it, you don't,
- 46:58Speaker 2: especially against a guy like Aaron Rodgers. You're not gonna
- 47:00Speaker 2: confuse Aaron Rodgers. You're not gonna throw off air like
- 47:03Speaker 2: he's seen everything. Sure right, just line up and play it.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Just make make a better play than the guy opposite
- 47:09Speaker 2: of you. Sometimes you can get away with that, and
- 47:11Speaker 2: this was the perfect team to do it. And I
- 47:12Speaker 2: hope they keep it against Tennessee because whoever is at quarterback,
- 47:15Speaker 2: it's two guys that haven't seen a ton of NFL football,
- 47:18Speaker 2: So there may be more motivation to go back to
- 47:21Speaker 2: throwing in some more of those wrinkles and some of
- 47:23Speaker 2: those disguises and things like that. Ball up top, line
- 47:27Speaker 2: it up, play it. I think that's kind of what
- 47:28Speaker 2: they got to do at this point.
- 47:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and when you look at their their schedule moving
- 47:32Speaker 3: forward here, and I'm not talking about, oh, they're gonna
- 47:35Speaker 3: go on a winning streak, and I'm not going there.
- 47:37Speaker 3: I'm just talking about the opponents that in the offenses
- 47:40Speaker 3: that they're gonna face. I feel like they can play
- 47:44Speaker 3: pretty simple defensively and stand toe to toe a little
- 47:48Speaker 3: bit with these teams like it might look like it
- 47:49Speaker 3: did on Sunday where the Jets made some place like
- 47:53Speaker 3: Garrett Wilson, no doubt made some place. You know, Breist
- 47:56Speaker 3: Hall had some runs. You know, I had a sixteen
- 47:57Speaker 3: yard run. He broke some runs off in this game
- 48:00Speaker 3: as well a few times.
- 48:01Speaker 2: But you know what there, it's that old Belichick like
- 48:05Speaker 2: they didn't want them to win with Devonte Adams. Right, yeah,
- 48:07Speaker 2: we're gonna go out here and make you beat us
- 48:09Speaker 2: left handed in if you beat like, you know, against
- 48:13Speaker 2: Titans week, Right, Calvin Ridley's probably got you take away.
- 48:16Speaker 2: So you look at any of those other receivers on
- 48:18Speaker 2: the Titans, you're gonna beat us throwing one of those
- 48:20Speaker 2: guys will tip oark out.
- 48:21Speaker 3: Yeah, right, they have the Titans this week, who's often
- 48:23Speaker 3: stinks and now doesn't have DeAndre Hopkins on top of that, right,
- 48:27Speaker 3: so their offense is terrible. There's no reason what's or
- 48:30Speaker 3: that Christian Gonzales shouldn't go out there and cover Calvin
- 48:33Speaker 3: Ridley and you play it straight up, right, there's no
- 48:35Speaker 3: reason to reinvent the wheel. The following week I think
- 48:40Speaker 3: is a little bit tougher because the Bears have a
- 48:42Speaker 3: decent amount of weapons, but still a rookie quarterback, right,
- 48:45Speaker 3: so I wouldn't go out there and try too much
- 48:48Speaker 3: against Caleb.
- 48:49Speaker 2: I guess we'll get to it. Do you play more zones?
- 48:51Speaker 2: Of eyes on the quarterback and that we'll get to that,
- 48:54Speaker 2: get to that, we get to it. Yeah, that's a
- 48:55Speaker 2: little more new ones.
- 48:56Speaker 3: Then you have the Rams in Matthew Stafford, who is
- 48:58Speaker 3: kind of like Aaron Rodgers, like, you're not going to
- 48:59Speaker 3: fool Matthew Staffords a betteran quarterback. You're you've got to
- 49:03Speaker 3: just kind of play him straight up. And then you know,
- 49:05Speaker 3: you got two in the Dolphins the following week, which
- 49:07Speaker 3: we've seen them be able to go out there and
- 49:09Speaker 3: cover Tyree Hill.
- 49:10Speaker 2: You have you evidence that you can play that team
- 49:13Speaker 2: straight up and be competitive.
- 49:14Speaker 3: And just lastly, then you got the Colts with probably
- 49:17Speaker 3: Joe Flacco right quarterback.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Right.
- 49:19Speaker 3: So my point is is that I hope moving forward
- 49:23Speaker 3: that this is the brand of defense that they play.
- 49:25Speaker 3: I don't think they're going to be a top five
- 49:27Speaker 3: defense playing this way, but I also don't think they're
- 49:29Speaker 3: going to be a bottom five defense playing this way either.
- 49:32Speaker 3: I think they got a little too cute early on
- 49:34Speaker 3: in the season, and they wanted to try some new
- 49:36Speaker 3: stuff and try some you know, DeMarcus Covington, I'm sure
- 49:40Speaker 3: I wanted to show off a little bit that he's
- 49:42Speaker 3: got some new schemes and he's been in the lab
- 49:44Speaker 3: and all that kind of stuff, and I know hold
- 49:47Speaker 3: it against him, but in hindsight, it's always good to
- 49:50Speaker 3: go with the simple stuff and what's been working around here.
- 49:53Speaker 2: Man, I would suck if Anthony Richards is not back
- 49:55Speaker 2: by then I feel for the guy. There's a thread
- 49:58Speaker 2: on Twitter about like, the NFL doesn't have a quarterback problem,
- 50:01Speaker 2: it has a quarterback development problem. Possible. I think it's
- 50:04Speaker 2: it's more than possible. You can't draft that guy and
- 50:07Speaker 2: then be surprised when this is the like, you gotta
- 50:09Speaker 2: be patient with him. And that's not even the whole
- 50:11Speaker 2: should he play, should he sit? Debate. It's just guys
- 50:14Speaker 2: aren't gonna come in the league and be MVPs right away.
- 50:16Speaker 2: CEJ Stroud is a massive anomaly. Massive anomaly even some
- 50:20Speaker 2: of the and I think Bill actually talked about this
- 50:23Speaker 2: the other night. I can never keep track of which
- 50:25Speaker 2: show he's on. I just see the clips on Twitter,
- 50:27Speaker 2: But on one of his shows he was talking where
- 50:28Speaker 2: he was like, you know, they threw Sam Darnold to
- 50:31Speaker 2: the Wolves, didn't like what they saw, look at him. Now,
- 50:33Speaker 2: they threw Baker Mayfield to the Wolves. Didn't like what
- 50:34Speaker 2: they saw looking at him. Now, like, these guys develop
- 50:37Speaker 2: and they get there, but you gotta show some patience.
- 50:39Speaker 2: I get it hasn't looked good with Richardson. And look
- 50:42Speaker 2: if they sat him because he checked himself out of
- 50:44Speaker 2: a game, that's one thing. But that doesn't seem to
- 50:46Speaker 2: be the case because I think Stichen said today that
- 50:48Speaker 2: that Flacco was gonna start moving forward, which implies it's
- 50:51Speaker 2: gonna be more than one game. Yeah, and you know
- 50:54Speaker 2: the same to the Patriots, Like it's looked really good
- 50:56Speaker 2: with Drake May through three games, two games in a quarter.
- 50:58Speaker 2: It's looked really good. Do I want it to look
- 51:00Speaker 2: this way the entire time? They'd be great, it'd be excellent.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Ideally a little bit better with the points, but like
- 51:06Speaker 2: he's gonna have rough patches like they're coming, and that's
- 51:09Speaker 2: not a knock at Drake May. Like nobody plays quarterback
- 51:12Speaker 2: like this consistently sure and understanding that you know, the
- 51:16Speaker 2: first miss isn't oh no, he's actually a bust. It
- 51:19Speaker 2: was just they didn't have film on a play. No,
- 51:20Speaker 2: you just gotta be patient. It takes a few years.
- 51:22Speaker 2: It takes a few years for these guys to really
- 51:24Speaker 2: develop and round out.
- 51:25Speaker 3: Okay, let's do three up, three down. You have your
- 51:28Speaker 3: your list? Did you have your list? It didn't get lost?
- 51:30Speaker 3: And you have a shiny new phone.
- 51:32Speaker 2: I wasn't sure. It's very like high Definitely, you have
- 51:34Speaker 2: a new phone. Now you like it? I like it
- 51:36Speaker 2: a little bit. All right, you get a new phone
- 51:38Speaker 2: and you tell me if you like, here's your number
- 51:40Speaker 2: one up And everyone else with Cob said me too,
- 51:42Speaker 2: because just not even for what he did on the field,
- 51:46Speaker 2: like he was good. You know, you saw some of
- 51:47Speaker 2: those issues come back that we saw the first five weeks,
- 51:50Speaker 2: but he made some plays as well. I think the
- 51:51Speaker 2: big thing was he wasn't sped up. Yeah, it looked
- 51:54Speaker 2: more like the guy we saw weeks one and two
- 51:56Speaker 2: than say, weeks four and five. But this is a
- 51:59Speaker 2: guy that you know, nobody wants to lose their job, obviously.
- 52:06Speaker 2: I think the way in which he lost it bothered
- 52:09Speaker 2: him more than usual. I understand that. And you know,
- 52:14Speaker 2: struggling team, he's not a part of the future here
- 52:16Speaker 2: the kids and the kids playing well. He had every
- 52:19Speaker 2: reason in the world to check out. And that's a
- 52:21Speaker 2: guy that stayed. What I saw on Sunday was a
- 52:23Speaker 2: guy that stayed ready, a guy that stayed prepared, and
- 52:27Speaker 2: a guy that that came to play and again not
- 52:29Speaker 2: easy to do, Like, not everybody has the mental makeup
- 52:32Speaker 2: to do that. So you talk about what makes a
- 52:35Speaker 2: good backup quarterback, it's not just what you do on
- 52:37Speaker 2: the field as a quarterback. There's a certain mentality that
- 52:40Speaker 2: comes with being a backup quarterback. And I think jakobra
- 52:43Speaker 2: Set showed it and he deserves credit for that.
- 52:45Speaker 3: I couldn't agree more. I echo everything that you just said.
- 52:47Speaker 3: I'll just add to it. You know, we've had cameras
- 52:50Speaker 3: on the sideline every week this year. They our video
- 52:53Speaker 3: team does a great job with the micd ups. Go
- 52:55Speaker 3: watch the micd ups of some of the offensive players
- 52:59Speaker 3: that we had Pop Douglas in Drake's debut, for example,
- 53:03Speaker 3: and a number one fan on the sideline when the
- 53:06Speaker 3: Patriots offense scores, Jacoby Brisset, like always off the bench,
- 53:11Speaker 3: always cheering, going right off to Drake May and giving,
- 53:14Speaker 3: you know, Drake May some love for his play. Like
- 53:17Speaker 3: I really, he deserves a ton of credit for how
- 53:20Speaker 3: he's handled this situation as a professional and how he
- 53:23Speaker 3: was ready to go into this game and play. This
- 53:26Speaker 3: is I believe his best game of the year. I
- 53:28Speaker 3: think this was better than Cincinnati Week one. I had
- 53:31Speaker 3: him with seven plus plays in this game, three of
- 53:33Speaker 3: them on the game winning touchdown. I thought the drive
- 53:36Speaker 3: starter to Hunter Henry was a pretty good ball. Put
- 53:38Speaker 3: it just in the perfect spot, you know, up on
- 53:41Speaker 3: the shelf for Henry to go out and box out
- 53:43Speaker 3: the defender there and make that catch. You mentioned the
- 53:46Speaker 3: scramble early on in the show. That was a really
- 53:49Speaker 3: good scramble on third down to pick up the first
- 53:52Speaker 3: down there. And then obviously the throw to Booty where
- 53:54Speaker 3: he checks into a cover zero beater and gets him
- 53:57Speaker 3: into the right play and then makes a really good
- 53:59Speaker 3: throw under pressure. Kudos to him like that. Whether you
- 54:03Speaker 3: want to talk about it the way you talked about it,
- 54:05Speaker 3: which I thought was great, yeah, or if you want
- 54:07Speaker 3: to talk about it from an actually going throw to
- 54:09Speaker 3: throw and seeing how he played in this game, I
- 54:12Speaker 3: can't complain about anything. You know, he played really, really well,
- 54:16Speaker 3: and frankly, it didn't start off too hot. Like first
- 54:19Speaker 3: third down of the game, he threw short of the
- 54:21Speaker 3: sticks and I was like, here we go. Right, takes
- 54:23Speaker 3: a bad sack, I thought in this game as well,
- 54:26Speaker 3: and I was like, all right, well, these are some
- 54:27Speaker 3: of the reasons why he got benched. But in the
- 54:29Speaker 3: second half, especially that fourth quarter, he really showed up
- 54:33Speaker 3: and showed out he game enough.
- 54:34Speaker 2: And that's what you gotta do, is back up quarterback.
- 54:35Speaker 2: Just give your team a chance. Right, nobody's expecting you
- 54:37Speaker 2: to go out and win the game yourself, but just
- 54:41Speaker 2: be somebody who can give your team a chance and
- 54:43Speaker 2: keep your team in the game. And he did that.
- 54:46Speaker 2: He certainly did that. Yep. Number two Christian Ellis, Yeah,
- 54:49Speaker 2: christianelle Better was all over the field in this game,
- 54:52Speaker 2: once again led the team of tackles. He had a sack.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Just seems like he might be a find. Yeah, and
- 54:59Speaker 2: I know that he's your I don't know that he's
- 55:00Speaker 2: your starting middle linebacker moving forward for the next ten years,
- 55:03Speaker 2: but could be a Matt mac wilson third down roune. Yeah,
- 55:06Speaker 2: gives you, gives you a little athleticism at that position,
- 55:08Speaker 2: gives you something on special teams as well. And we
- 55:12Speaker 2: talked a lot with Bill about the middle of the
- 55:14Speaker 2: roster guys, right, really good middle of the roster kind
- 55:17Speaker 2: of guy where he's not going to be a superstar.
- 55:19Speaker 2: But he'll he'll contribute and he'll sneaky when you game
- 55:24Speaker 2: here or there, Like he had a big time performance
- 55:26Speaker 2: on Sunday and he continues to build and it's been
- 55:29Speaker 2: encouraging a few weeks for him.
- 55:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm sure we'll talk maybe a little bit
- 55:32Speaker 3: about the rest in a second. But the DPI call
- 55:35Speaker 3: to me was tough, like he's he's on a wheel
- 55:38Speaker 3: route against the running back and Aaron Rodgers just like
- 55:41Speaker 3: short arms the throw and the running back like acts
- 55:44Speaker 3: like he's tried like he should, like that's.
- 55:46Speaker 2: What your coach to do. It was an old Joe Flaccos. Yeah.
- 55:49Speaker 3: Yeah, it really was, like I don't even know the
- 55:51Speaker 3: running back was like out of bounds like it just
- 55:54Speaker 3: to me, it was a it was a tough call.
- 55:56Speaker 3: My number two up it was Hunter Henry. I think
- 56:00Speaker 3: under Henry's outstanding, Like I just think he's a.
- 56:02Speaker 2: Really good football player. Henry.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Yeah, so, you know, makes a play on third down
- 56:07Speaker 3: from Drake May early on in this game, makes the
- 56:10Speaker 3: play to get the drive started in the two minute
- 56:13Speaker 3: drill to win the game.
- 56:14Speaker 2: That's a tough catch.
- 56:15Speaker 3: You know, he's got a guy draped all over him,
- 56:18Speaker 3: goes up, makes a tough catch to get that drive going.
- 56:21Speaker 3: His run blocking in this game was really really good.
- 56:25Speaker 3: He kind of saved the bacon of the Patriots on
- 56:27Speaker 3: the game winner.
- 56:28Speaker 2: Like not the first time he's done that either.
- 56:30Speaker 3: Yeah, he kind of saved the day. Him and Michael
- 56:32Speaker 3: Jordan saved the day. I have it right up about that.
- 56:35Speaker 3: I think it's interesting scheme wise, but he kind of
- 56:38Speaker 3: saved the Patriots bacon on that goal line run by
- 56:41Speaker 3: Ramandre Stevenson. He's just an outstanding football player, Like, really
- 56:46Speaker 3: reliable guy for the quarterback. Really good feel too, of
- 56:50Speaker 3: like getting open off script. He's done that multiple weeks
- 56:53Speaker 3: in a row with both quarterbacks, Like it doesn't really
- 56:56Speaker 3: seem to matter when those guys break contain and they
- 56:59Speaker 3: get out and outside the pocket, like it always seems
- 57:02Speaker 3: like eighty five is somewhere in a good spot available
- 57:05Speaker 3: to them. I just think that he's been one of
- 57:07Speaker 3: their most consistent best football players and he deserves some love.
- 57:11Speaker 2: Yeah. I had one more ID for Christian Zalez yeap
- 57:14Speaker 2: opposite Devonte Adams, great receiver, didn't allow it catch. Yeah,
- 57:19Speaker 2: I mean he was excellent. He was just right there's
- 57:21Speaker 2: not much more to say. Like, he was right on
- 57:23Speaker 2: his hip. He's right on him the whole game. So
- 57:25Speaker 2: I had him as well, Gonzalez as my number three
- 57:27Speaker 2: up twenty three routes against DeVante Adams. He did give
- 57:30Speaker 2: up one catch for sixteen yards, but it was the
- 57:32Speaker 2: last play of the game, so if you want to count,
- 57:34Speaker 2: I might. I might have checked that number before the
- 57:36Speaker 2: last playoff. Yeah, last play of the game. That was
- 57:39Speaker 2: caught in bounds and ended the game, all right, So
- 57:41Speaker 2: he gave up he gave up no catches a consequence, Yeah,
- 57:44Speaker 2: exactly fine.
- 57:45Speaker 3: I had a pass breakup on his slant and had
- 57:47Speaker 3: the worst DPI call of all time.
- 57:50Speaker 2: So so that call was horrible. I don't think that
- 57:52Speaker 2: many people saw this. Two plays before on the cross
- 57:56Speaker 2: run first down, he clearly held yeah, Devonte ad like
- 58:00Speaker 2: you can see him get the T shirt the undershirt.
- 58:02Speaker 2: I think that was a makeup call. A brutal call.
- 58:04Speaker 2: Brutal call. Let me put it this way. I have
- 58:07Speaker 2: to believe that's a makeup call because otherwise I'm not
- 58:10Speaker 2: going to be able to live with it. Like that
- 58:12Speaker 2: was such a brutal call, it has to be a
- 58:14Speaker 2: makeup call. It can't be anything else because they did
- 58:16Speaker 2: miss a clear hold. If you go back and watch
- 58:17Speaker 2: two plays, yeah, I know what you're talking about. Yeah,
- 58:19Speaker 2: it's possible. But even still, makeup calls aren't supposed to
- 58:22Speaker 2: be that egregious. I just I'm add in contact. Yeah,
- 58:24Speaker 2: so away from the ball.
- 58:26Speaker 3: Uh, I only counted like two or three times where
- 58:29Speaker 3: I thought Adams was maybe open. Be Gonzalez got beat
- 58:33Speaker 3: on one, and both of them were non consequential, like
- 58:36Speaker 3: one of them was like a little underslant type of
- 58:38Speaker 3: route that maybe he would have been like a eight
- 58:40Speaker 3: or nine yard game.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Uh.
- 58:42Speaker 3: He was with Adams for four quarters in this game.
- 58:46Speaker 3: They're still looking for DeVante Adams. That's what I heard.
- 58:48Speaker 3: He is a missing person. So Christian Gonzalez number three
- 58:51Speaker 3: up erased him from the game.
- 58:53Speaker 2: Yep, good stuff. You got anything else, I'll throw like
- 58:56Speaker 2: a half up. Jilani Tava had one really nice run stuff. Yep,
- 59:01Speaker 2: it's been rough for him. I think he needed that one. Yeah,
- 59:05Speaker 2: I think he needed to make a play. We'll see
- 59:06Speaker 2: if if he keeps the He he had his issues
- 59:09Speaker 2: in this game as well, but he gets like a
- 59:11Speaker 2: one play up for me because it was it was
- 59:13Speaker 2: in the third quarter, right, he like reads it so well,
- 59:16Speaker 2: shoots the gap, gets in before the lineman can can
- 59:19Speaker 2: get in the way of the hole, and just brings
- 59:20Speaker 2: down the runner in the backfield. So he need he
- 59:22Speaker 2: needs to be make more plays like that, But he
- 59:24Speaker 2: made one. So I had.
- 59:25Speaker 3: I had outside the box one too as well. Okay,
- 59:27Speaker 3: So I had Kean White for the last three quarters
- 59:29Speaker 3: of the game, not that, not the first quarter. All right,
- 59:32Speaker 3: take the first quarter out last three quarters.
- 59:34Speaker 2: I feel I did one play. You at least did
- 59:36Speaker 2: forty five minutes. Yeah.
- 59:37Speaker 3: So in the first quarter, I had Kean White with
- 59:40Speaker 3: two blown edges, one blown edge just straight up and
- 59:43Speaker 3: then one blone edge where Jeremy Rucker, the third tight
- 59:46Speaker 3: end for the Jets, pancakes him on a run outside
- 59:49Speaker 3: the numbers, and I was shocked. I was like, he's
- 59:51Speaker 3: two hundred and eighty five pounds. This guy should not
- 59:53Speaker 3: be ending up on the ground.
- 59:54Speaker 2: Jeremy Rutgers not blocking tight end.
- 59:55Speaker 3: Yeah, unbelievable. So he gets pancaked and I'm like, oh God,
- 59:59Speaker 3: like here we go. Then, over the last three quarters
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: of the game, I had him with two run stuffs
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: and four quarterback pressures.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: In this game, and he was kind of a maniac.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: He had the one everywhere he got Rogers good. Yeah
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: on one of those yeah quarterback hit on the stunt.
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: So I thought he really leveled off in this game
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: after a kind of a rocky start and was able
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: to pull out of it. And I had some really
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: good plays in this game. I talked to him about
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: it yesterday and you know, look, he said, still a
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: young player, and for him, he feels like he has
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: to get into the game first, like kind of see
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: what they're doing to me, how they're blocking me, how
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: they're trying to run the ball. That day, and he
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: said that, you know, he needs to start better, like
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: he's still a little inconsistent and he needs to have
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: better starts. But he ended well and I thought he
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: was kind of a force in the second half of
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: this game.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: So there you go. Moving over to the downs. Number one,
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: every receiver not named Pop Douglas, Yeah, I had all receivers.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: I get Kishan Boodiet the one catch, but yeah, still
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: had a couple drops. And this has been building drop rate.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: So on this show, we don't believe in using and
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: I feel like I can speak for years. You've had
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: this conversation. We don't believe in using individual drop numbers
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: as a barometer because if you go and look generally,
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: if you just look at most drops, the list looks
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: very similar to most targets. Like Julie Edelman used to
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: be among the league leaders and drops every year, but
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: his drop rate, like percentage of targets that end up
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: in drops or percentage of yeah targets that end up
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: in drops, was usually bout league average, maybe a little
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: bit higher about league average. Drop rate is the number
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: you want to use because teams that even if a
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: team throws the ball less, you get a better picture
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: of it. Drop rate in the month of October by
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: team in the NFL number one, the Miami Dolphins nine
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: point nine. That might be quarterback play and might be
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: quarterback Tyreek Hills always had a drop problem. Yeah, like sneaky.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: It doesn't matter because he's so good, but he sneaks
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: had drop problem, and he also has eighty yard touchdown problem,
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: right exactly, So you let it go. Uh yeah, these
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: guys start catching eighty yard touchdowns every week, they can
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: drop like this because the Patriots are second eight point
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: seven percent. Then just to see how that number stacks up.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: The Texans were third eight point three, the Saints and
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Chargers both eight point two, and then you have a
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: big drop after the top five. You go to the
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: Seahawks at seven percent. Yeah. So, but a lot of
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: those drops are coming on third downs, on passes past
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: the sticks, both right, in some cases both just like
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: high leverage drops, right, these drops aren't And I need
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: to go back through I haven't done yet and like
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: find the individual drops and find like the situations. But
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: it's clear watching it, like, yeah, they're not just killing
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: individual plays, they're killing drives and you're gonna start losing
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: the trust of the quarterback. You gotta catch the ball.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: Guys getting open now, guys are getting open. Jaylen Poll
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: talk about all his issues with catching the ball. Fine,
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: he's been getting open. Kasehan Boody was getting open when
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: he was dropping the passes. So like Kenrick Porn Kendrick Born,
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: so close, so close, right, But you gotta catch football.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: You gotta catch the football, and you don't want it
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: to become Catching the football is as much mental as
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: it is anything else. You start thinking about having to
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: catch it, you're gonna start running sloppier routes or losing
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: track of where defenders are like that, catching it should
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: be second nature, should be muscle memory. When you start
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: dropping the ball, though, you worry about it becoming a
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: mental thing and creeping into your head.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Yes, I had them with four drops in this game.
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: Just what did you count the tae kwon one as drop?
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: Yeah, but just to be clear, I don't count every
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: throw that hits a receiver in the hands a drop.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: Like I don't count the taekwon. To me, there's a
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: difference between a drop and a ball you should catch. Okay,
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: it's fair. If there's contact from the defender, it's not
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: a drop. Yeah, because that's another variable. Yeah, that doesn't
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: mean Taekwon shouldn't have caught that he could. But when
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: I look at that's that's how I did. Like, I'll
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: knock that play. It's a bad play by Taekwon Thornton.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: I just don't consider it. I think drop gets overused.
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: Yeah, me too. So I had Kaishan Boudi with two. Yeah,
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: so one of them was on the in cut on
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: third down, the last throw of the game for Drake
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: that hit him right in the chest that he needs
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: to catch yep. The other one, he was running like
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: a slant against zone coverage and Jacoby thought he was
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: gonna sit or settle in the zone, and he kept
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: running so the ball ended up behind him. So I
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: put that on the receiver. That's a drop, it's a
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: bad route, whatever you want.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: To call it.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: And then I had one each for Bourn and for Taekwon,
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: so Bourn also dropped, and in cut on third day.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: One had a that was a clear drop.
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: Yes, And I don't think that he'll mind that I
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: share this story. But when we were in the locker
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: room earlier, Kendrick Bourne had like fifty pairs of receiver
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: gloves in his locker and he's like going through all
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: the receiver gloves and so I asked him. I was like,
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: what's up with all the gloves and he was like, well,
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: I can't catch, so I'm trying to find the right gloves.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: I was like, well, I get it, dude. Julian Edelman
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: used to have boxes and boxes and boxes of cutters
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: in his locker.
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so they're working on it, is my point, Like,
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: I know that's it was kind of funny, but it
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: was also I'm also just being sincere like I think
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: that they know it's a problem, but that whole receiver room. Look,
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: let's face it, Uh, they they got to get their
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: house in order, like in always right in all ways.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: And I would also put in this category. And I
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: don't need them to force feed to Mario Douglas like
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: this does not need to be uh, you know, he's
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: peak Randy Moss. We have to get him his ten
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: targets a game, but they need to do a better
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: job of getting him involved.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: I do think teams are starting to focus more on
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: him in coverage.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sure they are, especially when they play man
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: to man. Yeah, but in general, I just think that
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: there's ways to get him the football. And you know,
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: I look at I was watching the Lions Titans game
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: obvious for obvious reasons because week coming up, and the
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: way that the Lions and Ben Johnson use pre snap
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: motion to get Kleif Raymond and Amhras Saint Brown off
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage. Like, I don't understand why Pop
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: Douglas isn't doing that every single week, right, Like motion
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: across the formation, snap the ball, let him go at
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: a rolling start, and then he runs like an in
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: cut or something off of it, like you can't cover that,
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: like if you're in Manton man and pop Douglas is
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: running full speed at you like that, and then he
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: makes a move at the top of the route like
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: you're not covering him, like he's gonna separate. So I
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: think that there's a there's some things that they can
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: do better. But the drops were an issue, and obviously
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: Douglas's lack of involvement I thought was a little bit
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: of an issue too in this game. All right, who's
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: number two?
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: Uh? Punt coverage?
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: Yeah, you allow an eight Friday to put it on him?
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: If it happens again, I'm talking about Jeremy Springer, the
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: Patriots special teams coordinator. It's on you.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Yeah, no, you allow that that long you allow that
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: to was in ninety six, ninety eight. I can't, I can't.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: I remember the long punt return touchdown last week. This week,
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: first punt, Yeah, first punt thirteen forty two to go
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: in the first quarter. Look, Gibson's a good returner, but
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: forty yards multiple mistackles. Can't can't have it, period, full stop,
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: can't have it. You blew that lit That's exactly what
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: you blew last week. Now, I don't necessarily think this
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: was a case of I think the reason behind it
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: was different. Last week, the biggest issue was Joe Cardona
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: over not Joe Cardona. Was Bryce Brengrat kicking his coverage. Yeah,
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: this week, I thought it was a much more coverable punt.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: You had multiple guys miss tackles in there, but it
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: doesn't matter like you on your p's and q's after
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: giving up that return. So that was disappointing to see.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: I will say, though, to go back, I meant to
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: mention this at the beginning when we talk about responding
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: to the toughness element of it. Two things the defense
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: did I really liked and I think were somewhat in
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: response to that. So if you allow forty yard punt
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: return right the Jets start and plus territory three and
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: out three out by the defense, great response, excellent response,
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: and then they had another one later on. They punt
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: the ball back to the Jets with three and change
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: to go in the third quarter, down two, and that's
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: the spot last week where the Jags went on that
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: eleven and a half minute drive that essentially killed the game.
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: Jets get where it was thirteen fourteen, yards on first
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: down run stuff incomplete, incomplete with the pressure, get the
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: ball back like mentally tough, let's keep the momentum on
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: our side. Drive. So I like how the defense responded
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: because they get a short field right off the jump.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: Good test, but shouldn't have had it to begin with.
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: Yeah, a couple of good complimentary football moments in this game.
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: Marcus Jones has the punt return, they go five plays
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: right down. Yeah, A couple of good moments like that.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: I had Marcus Jones the cornerback as my last.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: So I was gonna do Marcus Jones the return of
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: Marcus Jones the corner to do. Yeah.
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: So I also had the special teams in terms of
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: the coverage like you did. I saw just go with
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: my last one. Marcus Jones five for one thirteen against
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: Garrett Wilson.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: He was waldo.
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: They are picking on him, they are finding them all
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: the time, and there in Manton Man. Look, Garrett Wilson's
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: a fantastic receiver, and Aaron Rodgers dropped some dimes.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: To get that one on the spot. Fame was as
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: good of a throw as you'll see. Yeh.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: So I I think Marcus Jones had some good coverage
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: in this game and was right there on a lot
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: of these plays. But you consistently see with him is
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: you know he's just not gonna make plays at the
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: catch point right because of his size, and that becomes problematic.
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: But you give up five for one thirteen, you know
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: you're gonna be on the downs list.
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: Uh so I have one more said, that's your last one.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Yeah again, I'm gonna go a little outside the box here,
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: but I have to do it because you know, Evan,
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: how infatuated I am and how much I value. What
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: are you gonna say? I don't know, but I know
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: I'm gonna hate it. Situational coaching. Oh god, I knew
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: I was gonna hate it. It. I'm not saying it
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: lost the Jets the game. You're up five, going for
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: and going for two is fine, Like we're not gonna
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: do the whole go for your down five, you're up five,
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: you go for two. You have two timeouts left. If
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: you score, you're up seven. Even if not, you're up five. Right,
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: you are leading with three minutes to go. How in
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: the hell do you not call a timeout to avoid
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: the delay of game and have to run your two
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: point play? From the seven. That is the only reason,
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: the only reason that's not the dumbest thing I saw
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: in the NFL this week is because the Chicago Bears
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: and Tyreek Stevenson had a generational miss in Washington. And
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: I kind of want to talk a little bit about
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: that because it's fun, But like, and then and then
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: what do they do? All right? So and Aaron Rodgers
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: said something like, well, we felt like we had a
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: good play, so we didn't want to burn it. They
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: come out, they run a two yard play from the
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: seven yard line.
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: They cover zeroed and they had a two guys unblocked
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: on the line.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: And look, I get it, you Marcus jones on on
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: Mike Williams, who's like a big physical guy, right, yeah,
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: I get that he's not scoring from the seven. Help's
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: gonna get there if they run that play from the two.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: The Jets go up seven. And then again, you don't
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: need the time out. The game's going to overtime. You
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: don't need either of those timeouts. You don't need them
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: to not call a timeout there. Evan was mind. I
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: thought they made a mistake, Like I thought the scoreboard
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: maybe was wrong that they had saying they had timeouts
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: left mind blowing by the New York Jets and the
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: Jets for I all will say, the Jets are still
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: the Jets, And that was the moment I looked at
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: and I was like, that's the Jets that not calling
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: a time out there my goodness.
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: So just to piggyback off that, and I know we
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: have callers waiting and stuff, so I apologize, but I
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: just have to.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: I have to get this off my chest. I think
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers is a joke, Like I really do. I
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: see over throw under the bus for that after the
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: game good, like the way he carries himself, uh, the
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: way that he plays. I just think it's unbelievable.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: You are a forty year old future Hall of Fame
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: quarterback and you can't get the team out of the huddle,
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: Like you can't get your guys lined up, You can't
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: how many delay of games or near delay of games
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: that they had four in that game where they burned
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: three timeouts and then they had the one at the
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: end of the because they can't get lined up. Like
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: that's you, dude, Like that you're the quarterback of this team,
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: Like that's on you. You're a veteran quarterback in this league,
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: not to mention. And he goes out there and he
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: put he puts it on Todd Downing and he says
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: that the play calls are coming into to the headset.
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: Late dude, you wanted your guy, freaking Nathaniel Hackett to
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: be the play caller who blows. And then he fired
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: him and they put Todd Downing in charge because Nay
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: Hackett blows. And now you can't get it along with
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: this guy either. It's you, You're the problem. And just
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: last thing on Aaron Rodgers, because now I'm ranting, right
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: all right, The last thing I'll just say about him
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: is that he needs to get his like he is
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: like a perfect good stats, bad team NBA player, right
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: Like it's like Paul Pierce circa two thousand.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: You're not gonna talk about Paul Peer. I want to
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: be like that, you bad teams that you could have
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: easily said, like James Harden.
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: Okay, well, James Harden was on some good teams, was okay,
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: But my point being, yeah, I'm not I'm not.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Like any Paul Pierce. I can't believe you. I know,
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: That's what I'm surprised he did it.
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: He was on some bad teams and he's on like
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: great Gilbert, all right, agent zero, all right, Gilbert, Like
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: perfect example of that in this game for the Jets.
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: I'm I mentioned the run numbers, right, the rush numbers.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers like Kevin in Minnesota. Sure, whatever you want
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: to use Aaron Rodgers, Paul I don't want to use
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: Paul Pierce.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers like has to cook right. So instead of
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: just the Patriots can't stop the run, we have at that.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: They couldn't stop to run last week in Jacksonville. So
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: what did Trevor Lawrence do? He passed the ball twenty
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: times and allowed his running back Tanks Bigsby to win
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: the freaking game. Instead, Aaron Rodgers is like, let's go empty,
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: like we're gonna put the Let's go empty, and let's
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: let's try to get Aaron Rodgers cooking right.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: And what do they do?
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: They give the lead right back to the Patriots instead
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: of running the ball with Breese Hall, who's their best
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: offensive player by the way I think, and just going
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: down the field exactly how Jacksonville went down the field
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: last week. No, no, no, Aaron Rodgers got to have
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: his MVP moment and we gotta do this. I just
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: think his whole act is insufferable. And he's a great
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: quarterback or was a great quarterback. But I absolutely loved
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: that the Patriots players after the game said that he
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: can't move anymore.
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: That was chef's kiss. Good for them. The guy stinks,
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: thank you. End of rant.
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: I just it's so frustrating to me that he does
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: not own anything. He throws everybody else under the bus,
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: and he makes mistake after mistake after mistake, and I'm
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: so glad this is happening to the Jets.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Did you say running back was the team's best player.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: I thinks are best offensive pot I wouldn't even go
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: that for I think Adams is better. I think there's
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: an argument we made for Wilson unning back. Adams isn't
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: the guy he used to be anywhere, fair enough, great, excellent,
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: all right, Halloween weekend has arrived, But there's nothing scary

- 1:15:44Speaker 4: Hey, guys just listening to the show. Try to make
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: this quick for you. Brief comment. I like to watch
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: a lot of different Patch shows. Yours is number one,
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: Catch twenty two, love it, thank you, and I just
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: can't give you enough about that. I second close or
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: a second would be Patriots and Filter would be better
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: if Alex was on it.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: But we got to get him on that during draft season.
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: I did it once. I've actually been on a couple
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: of times.
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I know you did it once. Yeah. Anytime Alex
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: has a show, I always listened.
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: To love it, appreciate it, thanks time.
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely. You know. At the beginning of the season,
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: my biggest concern was whether we have the right quarterback.
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: And I'm really hesitant to say that we do right now,
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: but I mean, the guys played two games and it's
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: just it's completely different from when Jacobi left the field
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: and May comes onto the field. So I'm really hesitant
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: to say that this guy is legit, that he's franchise quarterbacks.
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: I'm not going to say it, but I'm certainly thinking
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: about it. My next biggest concern is whether or not
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: we can put the right players around him and give
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: them the right coaching. For me, that's a real concern.
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: If I was Craft, and I know this might sound crazy,
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: never happened, but if dayball ever became available, I would
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: drop Avp in his second and take on day ball.
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: And the same goes with Rabel. I would love to
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: see that. I think we have some real weaknesses in
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: coaching and the other thing is the in terms of
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: general management. You know, those are my biggest concerns. So
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: I wonder what you guys think about that and what
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: you would do if you could do anything to make
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: changes to the team. Thanks again, I'll listen to the
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: talk guys.
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: Thank you, Thanks Tony. Appreciate you waiting on hold for
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: us too. Uh so uh To the first point about
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: Drake May, I'm not ready to call him a franchise
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: quarterback yet either. I think that's way premature.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: I think it takes three years to get a real
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: idea of.
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: Who yeah quarterback Like, even for the biggest Drake May
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: guy that probably exists on this planet, I'm not ready
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: to call him a franchise quarterback. At the same time,
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: he has the makings of a franchise quarterback.
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: You can like what you've seen so far and say
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: you need to see more. Yeah, so that's that's He's
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: checked all the boxes for me so far, But I'm
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: not about to I to me, it's like generally about
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: midway through that third year, I think is when guys
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: they're playing consistently and and they're in a decent enough situation,
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: that's when you really start to learn who these guys are. Yeah,
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: I just got we got a little bit of time.
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: I come away super impressed with pretty much everything that
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: he's done. So it's hard not to say that he's
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: trending in that direction. Uh, you know, physically, he obviously
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: checks every single box he could possibly want, and mentally
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: he's been really sharp. I think he's stayed in the
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: field exceptionally well. And Alex van Pelt said that this
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: morning that that is probably the part that it has
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: shocked him the most is his decision making and how
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: well he's read the field this early on.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: So but then the thing becomes is another box he
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: has a check he won't check for a while, it
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: might not be till next year. Part of decision making
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: his tendencies, and those tendencies are gonna pile up, and
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: they're gonna be on tape and they're gonna be in spreadsheets,
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: and teams are gonna start being able to prepare for
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: him better. And then what is he doing, Like that's
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: a that's kind of where it's all right. I like
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: what he's done. Now, let's see when teams have a
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: better idea of who he is, how he adjusts Because
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: that that can separate a talented quarterback from a franchise quarterback.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: By the way, I got a tweet here for Marty.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: Well done, Barth. Do not let Lazar slander Paul Pierce
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: by pomping him to Aaron Rodgers that will not stand.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: The comp by the way, is actually a good one.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: Carmelo Anthony, that's a good one. That's as my same
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: city too. Good job Martin. But not team USA, Carmelo Anthony, No,
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: like not even some of those Nuggets teams had talent. Yeah,
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: they went to Western at him and iversoned out talking
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: about a fun team. Kenyan Martin Martin there with them. Yeah,
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: all right, I like Kenny Martin, but that like NIX
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: Carmelo Anthony when he's like him and nobody, Oh yeah,
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: Washington Mari Stodemire when it was him and nobody. Like,
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: that's a that's a good comp. So good good tweet,
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: good tweet. Thanks Marty.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: You know what I was getting at, all right, And
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: I'm sorry. I you know, I'm the biggest Paul Pirice guy.
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: So the fact that that came off shocked. But that
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: I said good stats, bad team. I didn't say that
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: he was a bad player.
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: I'm not gonna like throw Antoine Walker under the bus
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: like that either. Oh, come on, big Antoine Walker ahead
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: of you. Like if he had played ten years later,
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: he would have been a stud six ' eight could
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: pull up all that. Like they didn't know what to
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: do with him back then.
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: That's not his fault, so you know how like in
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: uh youth league basketball, every want in colleg Yeah, they
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: reclely sure. You could only do numbers like one through
- 1:20:25Speaker 3: twelve or whatever like there were so I couldn't pick
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: thirty four, so I used to be I used to
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: pick eight for an one.
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: I used to pick one because it was the only
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: one that fit me because they went.
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: Up to, he's such a nerd, you're such a little Well.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: It was one or two, but I wouldn't wear two
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: because of Derek Jeter. Yeah that so it was one,
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: and then I moved on a five. I don't know
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: why I just liked five.
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: But uh, I like all the makings of what Drake
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: May is putting out there in terms of franchise quarterback
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: to get.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: This back on the Royals.
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: I also would say that I just continue to be
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: really impressed, uh with with him. Uh, the person like
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: just the mental makeup of him. I think that he
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: said all the right things. I think he carries himself
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: really well. He's got that swagger, like he's got that
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: quarterback QB one swagger, and uh, you know, after Houston,
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: after Jacksonville, it's I have to play better, right, it's
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: not It's not anybody else's fault. It's not the defense's fault.
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: It's not my receiver's fault. Like I threw a bad
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: ball to Jalen Polk, I gave up a sack at
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: the end of the game. Not that wasn't on Mike
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: on Wennu, you know, like so on and so.
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: Accountability, the account of sack that we were just talking
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: about with Roger or the antithesis of what you were
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: talking about rober clown. Yeah, exactly. So I know that
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: Carmelo was ever that selfish. I don't think so. I
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: mean he's six man on tm us that's true.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: Yeah. So yeah, I really been impressed with him. And
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: I think your your show even said this yesterday when
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: I was listening on my ride home. Patriots fans should
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: be excited about Drake May. Yeah, like it's and I
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: just not to rag on Mac Jones. I don't mean
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: to do that.
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: There's still a little Mac Jones like I don't want
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: to get hurt again kind of thing going on.
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: But he's a totally different player, right Like the thing
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: with Mac Jones is that we were never sure if
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: the physical skill set was there.
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: Drake May is not going to have that issue.
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: Drake May is not failing because he can't throw the
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: ball far enough or hard enough for run fast enough
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: or whatever. Right, It's not going to be physical attributes
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: that fail Drake May. And I really like his mental
- 1:22:22Speaker 3: makeup so right now I'm kind of trying to pick
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: nitpick like ways that he's going to fail. And I
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: think the caller was a Tony right from Canada. Uh
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: he he nailed it. It's can they put the people
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: around him?
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:22:36Speaker 3: Can they put the roster around him, the coaching around
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: him to get the best out of him? And my
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: biggest fear for Drake May, and I've said this on
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: Unfiltered a few times, is that he ends up being
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: Trevor Lawrence justin Herbert, you know, like these really uber talented.
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: Guys in a bad situation that era just constantly in
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: bad situaes well and to the callers point one last thing,
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: like he mentioned Brian day Ball, and I mean that's
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: everybody knows I feel about Dave if you listen to
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: the show, Like that's a guy I really like. You know,
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: I've said this, Alex Van Pelt one way or another
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: is not here for a long time. Yeah. It's it's
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: either not gonna work out and he's gonna get fired. Yeah,
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: or it is gonna work out and he just developed
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: a quarterback and now he becomes one of the hottest
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: names in coaching. So no matter what, Like, I don't
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: see a situation good or bad where Alex Van Pelt
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: is here for more than what three years? Yeah, I
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: still so, I still feel like Van Pel's doing his job.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: I know I think he is. But this is part
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: of what went wrong with mac Jones. They didn't have
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: you know, there was no succession playing for Josh McDaniels.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: So you've got to have the next guy in Brian
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: Daball would be ideal, I think, especially for Drake May
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: this kind of quarterback, that kind of coach.
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: But like right, but the other issue, and I agree
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: with you, but Dabell to me, like if Dabell comes
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: in and he turns Drake may into Josh Allen and
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: he's this like top five MVP candidate and the Patriots
- 1:23:55Speaker 3: are a playoff team. My guess is that Dable will
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: get a right not here long term, yeah either and
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: but like you got to have that.
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: We talked about this. I don't want to say all
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: winter because they didn't have a coach for only like
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: two weeks. But yeah, like this is part of what
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: comes with hiring a defensive coach, whether it was Mayo,
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: whether it was Rabel, whoever. Unless you're gonna hire Josh McDaniels,
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: who is not getting another head coaching job, you're going
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: you have to keep that pipeline stocked. You hope that
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: not to have the next guy ready.
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: You hope that you do it internally, right, Like you hope, Yeah,
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: you hope. And look, I know it's maybe not the
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: most inspired thing, and neither was Alex van Pelt. But
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: if push comes to shove, if it has to be
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: Ben McAdoo who's done it before and his called plays
- 1:24:37Speaker 3: before and TC McCartney, the bigger hope is probably that
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: TC McCartney continues to rise.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: He has the resume for it because he's coached offensive line,
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: he's coached tight ends, like, he coached all these different positions.
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: So to me, he is he he would in the house,
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: would be the most likely guy.
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe not yet, not right now, ways to grow,
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: but two to three years from now.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, I don't think Van it's gonna be
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: this thing where it's like Van Pelt. No matter what happens,
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: it's not gonna be Van Pelton may grown together because
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: if it goes well, somebody's gonna make Alex van Pelt
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: the head coach. All right, Patty is an ag on
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: what's up? Patty? J We doing good.
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: So I got a couple of questions as always, all right,
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: the second one might be more for Alex, but Evan,
- 1:25:21Speaker 5: of course you know I'm not gonna stay Well, it's
- 1:25:23Speaker 5: only for Alec. The first question that I got for
- 1:25:26Speaker 5: you guys is some Wednesday, it's kJ born in Taekwon
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: Thornton still on this team. I think you can possibly
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: get maybe like a conditional seventh for Osborne. I don't
- 1:25:37Speaker 5: think we're getting anything for Taykwon. And the second question
- 1:25:41Speaker 5: is brat scenario Alex and of it. Sorry he doesn't care,
- 1:25:47Speaker 5: all right, so you're able. You're able to get one.
- 1:25:53Speaker 5: You're able to get these three players. And I'm going
- 1:25:55Speaker 5: to give you A and B list. A is Ted McMillan,
- 1:26:02Speaker 5: Garrianta YERSI and Harold Standon Jr.
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: List B.
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: Is Will Campbell, Trey Harris, and my the guy that's
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: slowly becoming the guy I want to see him on
- 1:26:16Speaker 5: this team next year, and that's Tyler Warren from Penn
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: State because to me, I think he's the best tight end.
- 1:26:24Speaker 5: He might be the best tight end the last two
- 1:26:26Speaker 5: drafts coming out. I'll take it off there.
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: And do you, thanks, Patty. I was trying to keep
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: track of the names. What was the first question.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: He's had Twon Thornton on the team?
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So I wanted to kind of use
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: that as a springboard. And this is why I asked,
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: because that's an important question. We haven't talked much trade deadline.
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: The trade deadline is on Tuesday. We won't have a
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: show between then and now. Uh So I wanted to
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: talk a little trade deadline. So let's start with giving
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: away players Taekwon, Thornton, kJ Osborne, Kendrick Bourne, possibly Jonathan Jones.
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: His name has been in some rumors. How do you
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: kind of feel about that so selling?
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: I don't know, Like, if we're gonna do the list
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: of truly untouchable players, yeah, you might be able to
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: do that on one hand, right, I'm not trade Drake May.
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: I'm not gonna trade Pop, Douglas Gonzalez, ke On White,
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: ke On White, Yeah, Dugger, I probably wouldn't Tryeyle Mike One. Mike, Yeah, wouldn'trade.
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: You're not trading my best offense alignment. Guys. I would
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: have to be strongly convinced to trade. Are some of
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: those veteran leaders Jacoby Verssette Kendrick Bourne, Jonathan Jones, Devon Godshaw, Hunter,
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: Henry Dedrick Wise another one I haven't seen his name.
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: Those other five i've seen.
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: I feel like if if you're if you're a ball knower,
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: then you know that Dietrick Why is a good football player. Yeah, sorry,
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: I wouldn't be surprised.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: I just also think for coaching staff, we spent the
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: whole beginning of the show talking about is the coaching
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: staff's message getting through right? And they've always right. They've
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: obviously had their issues with that here early on. The
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: best way you can impart that messages through players, is
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: through veteran leadership. So if you're worried about, you know,
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: having issues building the culture from year one, moving on
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: from Jacoby Versett, from Kendrick Bourn, from Jonathan Jones is
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: not going to help that. Now, if somebody wants to
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: get nuts and give me like a third round pick
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: for Kendrick Bourne, sure, right, if you get the Mohammed
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: sanw trade, great, great comp thank you. Yes, Like I'm
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: not gonna say no to that. But if it's a
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: sixth round pick, I actually think Kendrick Bourne's leadership at
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: this point is worth more than a sixth round pick. So,
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: and especially in what is this is a buyer's market,
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: this is naughty seller's market. That Deontay Johnson trade is insane.
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: And I actually did a mailbag on Tuesday or on Monday.
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: I wrote it Monday, went out Tuesday morning. That was like,
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: sure the Patriots being on Deontay Johnson and I was like, well,
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: you know, he's probably gonna cost a lot. He's not
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: a bad player. Had I known it was a fifth
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: sixth pickswap, absolutely, if that's what receivers are going for.
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: But I'm not giving up Kendrick Bourne. So if that's
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: what Deantrey Johnson's worth, seventh round for Kendrick Bourne, absolutely not.
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: I value his leadership more than that. And for him
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: or Hunter Henry, these guys on multi year deals, they
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: may actually still have a role next year. So those
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: are the guys I'm not trading. I want to say
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: that first before we get to the guys that I am,
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: because I feel strongly about that. If you can't tell
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: Kendrick Bourne, you know how I feel about him. I
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: say this about him all the time. I could have
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: prime Randy Moss, Prime trel Owns, Prime, Chad Johnson. I'm
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: finding a spot of my team for Kendrick Bourne. That
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: guy just brings an in it factor and in tangibles
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: that I want him in the room. Same with guy
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: like Hunter Henry, right, I want Jonathan Jones. I want
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: those guys in the room. Yeah.
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: So I I worry about trading Kendrick Bourne because he
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: is and I don't mean this as a as a
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: slight on the younger guys, but he is like the
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: one professional in that wide receiver room right now, and
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: I think if you trade him, unless, like we said,
- 1:29:59Speaker 3: if you get a Mohammed's new offer for Kendrick Bourne,
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: then I think you have to do it. But yeah, uh,
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: trading him is going to turn that room over to
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: a bunch of twenty two year old kids. It's going
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: to be Pop Douglas, Kaishan Boody, Jalen Polk, Javon.
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: Babs becomes the most veteran member of j Osborne.
- 1:30:17Speaker 3: Yeah but still like you're you're turning the room over
- 1:30:20Speaker 3: to a very very young group that has already had
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: some issues with maturity.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: Let's just say exact, Yeah, no, exactly, like they there's
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: a lot of control in that room right now. Yeah.
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: Look a lot of that came when Kendrick Bourne was
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: out and he was still around the team, but he
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: wasn't playing, and it does make a difference.
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: Yeah, so I would have concerns about that. Look, I'm
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: on the record with this and I know it's an
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: unpopular opinion, but I'm not an f them picks guy.
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: I'm not the Los Angeles Rams. Okay, I'm not looking
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: at it that way necessarily, but i am a talent
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: acquisition guy, and if I'm a team, I'm still talent
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: in over talent out right, Like that's the most important
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: thing to me. And what I don't understand is we
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: get to this time of year and we have people.
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: We had an emailer in a couple of weeks ago
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: and Paul and I disagreed on this that said Kendrick
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: Bourne for a sixth round pick. And I'm like, why
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: am I dealing away Kendrick Born for a six round pick?
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. And you know, Paul's
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: point was that you're not going to get more than
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: a six So I said, well that I'm keeping Kendrick Borne.
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: He's on a multi year till it's not. We're at
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: a certain point. You can't just trade guys to trade him.
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: If word gets out you're trading player away without you know,
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: for less than their worth. You're never gonna be able
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: to negotiate because people will wait on you. The old
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: old Danny Ainge, and Danny Ainge went too four in
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: the other direction, pretty big Celtic showed. How about that
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: game last night? That was something right.
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: We'll get to that, but we have some things to
- 1:31:44Speaker 3: cover first. Okay, we can't get into the Boston sports Man.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: To me, it's more about, you know, I look at
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: Taekwon Thorn. I look at kJ Osbourne. You've got to
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: get Jalen Polk back on the field when he's healthy.
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: I know it hasn't been good, but there's a young
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: player that needs to develop. Jaymon Baker needs to play Eventually.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: I'm coming around. I like, I know it hasn't been great.
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: He didn't have a great start on the field. He
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: had the hiccups in London that Mike Reese reported, but
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: used the fourth round pick on the kid. You gotta play,
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: and you gotta see what he can do, and you
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: got to open up snaps and you don't want Taekwon
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: Thornton kJ Osborne sitting at the back end of the
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: depth chart behind guys that are, you know, going through
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: their growing paints. That's just gonna create more division inside
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: the room. Those two guys, I'm cool. That's more about
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: you're moving them to create opportunities for other players. I'd
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: look to move them. I don't know if I gave
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: this take on this show. I've given it on other shows.
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: That shows mixed up yeap City so Bill Belichick, Yeah,
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: I mentioned in the Guards as well, So.
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: I just I would play City. So I think City
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: show is a good player. Yeah, but it's fine. I
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: don't think they feel the same way. He's look at
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: who he's been behind this here.
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: I also do think that there's an element of like
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: twenty twenty one Ted Carris, where it's like it's the
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: best five that is worshiping and that's built the most continuity,
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: And like Mike on Wen who goes to the bench
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: that year and he's really one of your best linemen.
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: But as they little bit of that, as they were
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: trying to find that best five, there didn't seem to
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: be a ton of urgency to make city so a
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: part of it. Yeah, if that makes sense. Yeah, he
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: also struggled real bad. He did, But it's like this
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: is a lineman that he's a young guy. He's shown
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: some promise. Yeah, in the league that is a shortage
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: on lineman. He might have something like you, you probably
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: get more for him than you would for like Kendrick Borne.
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: I don't know what the offers are for interior linemen
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: these days. They don't get traded very often because it's
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: not really worth it. But if there's one position on
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: the line, the Patriots low key have a logjam at guard.
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying Jordan Robinson City and then when
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: Cole Stranger comes back too, So they have five guards
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: for two spots.
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: Yeah, they have too many guards. So and I just
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: looking at the way they've operated, I think he's the
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: odd man out. And if he's going to be the
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: odd man out, and most of those guys are still
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: gonna be here next year, so this is not like, oh,
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: well we'll put him back in next year thing like
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: they did with on Wu because Ted Carris was gone, right,
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: you knew that I might look to see what I
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: could get for City. So I don't love saying that. Personally,
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: I think he's a good player, but just the way
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: they've operated, it feels like he might be a little expendable.
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with that. I think if there's one
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: area of surplus, it's probably guard. Yeah, and and receiver.
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: But those guys are all kind of you know whatever.
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: But well, we just talked about that. You move kJ Osborne,
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: you move you move Taekwon Thornton now City so is
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: still under contract. That's a guy. Maybe you move in
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: the off season when he's worth a little bit more.
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: But you know, if somebody calls and says, like a
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: fourth round.
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: City on Sunday that loses their starting guard for the
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: season and needs a guard.
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: Fourth round pick for City, So I would do that
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: whether they took them the fourth or fifth fourth. Fourth. Yeah,
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: I flipped that absolutely. So Uh.
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: The last thing I want to say about the deadline
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: and go back to my whole philosophical approach to this
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: type of stuff. I I believe the Patriots should at
- 1:34:52Speaker 3: least be exploring. And I'm not I know everyone, I'll
- 1:34:55Speaker 3: put a name to it. I'm not Elliot Wolf, I'm
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: not on the phone. I don't know who's available, who's
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: not available. I know the whispers, I know the rumors,
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: but like none of us actually know. Okay, I just philosophically,
- 1:35:07Speaker 3: bear with me for a second. The Patriots should be
- 1:35:11Speaker 3: interested in like a Montes Sweat type of trade.
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: Okay, so I have a name that finish your ramp,
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: but I have an name I want to ask you about.
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: I just they need to add good football players to
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: this team. And when I say good football players, I
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: mean like guys that you would rank in the top
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: ten of the roster. I don't mean the middle of
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: the class guys that you see move a lot. Right
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: this time of year. I'm talking about adding some real
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: uh star power, a guy that you can consider part
- 1:35:39Speaker 3: of your core. And I would just say with Montes Sweat,
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: the Bears gave up and I know they had a
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: surplus of picks, but I think you might be having
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: running into that situation if you get a high draft
- 1:35:49Speaker 3: pick and trade down coming up here soon. If they
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: gave up a second round pick for Montes Sweat. They
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: signed Montes Sweat to a monster extension, so now he's
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: a Chicago Bear for the next four years. He leaves
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: the Bears in sacks and quarterback pressures through eight weeks
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: and they're a playoff contender. So it's worked out. It's
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: worked out for the Bears with Montes if you do.
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: It smart, like you know some T. Higgins is a
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: name that's been out there right and people, well, you
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: know they need this, they need the pick. You can't
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: trade the second round. We're probably using that pick on
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: a receiver. You're hoping that receiver that pick is used
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: on a player that's great. Team. I wouldn't touch first
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: round pick, and I'm probably not touching the second. T.
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: Higgins might be the one guy would have to be
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: for like a bona fide number one.
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: Okay, So here's the player I want to ask you about.
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: And I wouldn't trade second round pick for this guy.
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: And I think he exists somewhere between the top ten
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: in the middle of the roster or like a top
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: fifteen of the roster. Guy. How about Chase Young?
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: So he every you know, the Niners tried this with
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: him though, right, like they tried to buy low on
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: a former first over.
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: That's also the Niners who had a ton of The
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: Niners are a different situation. They had a ton of expenses.
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: They they knew going in he was going to be
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: a rental. They didn't need the pick they gave up
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: for him. If you could get so he went for
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: a third last year. Yeah, and he's had a quieter year. Yeah.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: If you could trade a fourth round pick for Chase
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: Young with a chance to extend him, I might do it.
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: Like I was looking at years yesterday, he made the
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: most sense. The other one is he's like.
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: A little bit you know, not it's probably two in
- 1:37:23Speaker 3: the weeds, but like he is a fourth three end
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: to me and not like a true like three four
- 1:37:28Speaker 3: outside linebacker. So where do you do you play? Him
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: with his hand in the dirt. Do you play him
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: up like it's kind.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: Of the key standing up in the NFL? Yeah, but
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: it's just not really so the other guys I looked
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: up both of the Bronco's edge rushers are reportedly on
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: the block. Yeah. Baron Browning right, yep, he's like a
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: josh u Ja screamer off the edge. Yeah, and then
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: there I forget the name of the guy on the
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: other side. I'll look it up. But like with Baron Browning,
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: would you be interested? Uh?
- 1:37:55Speaker 3: Probably not, just because and him are pretty similar and
- 1:37:58Speaker 3: it wasn't really working out with Like, Browning is like
- 1:38:01Speaker 3: a true situational pass rusher. He's like two and forty
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: five pounds, you know, he's a true screamer off the edge.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: I just you mentioned the the Montees sweat trade. Yeah, no,
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: pass rusher is definitely a place that Jonathan Cooper was
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: the other one. Okay, Yeah, these guys they're not like
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: it's rare for a guy like that to be available. Yeah,
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: Like you're not necessarily gonna have that guy. I think
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: if they make that trade, it's probably more a guy
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: like Chase Young for like a fourth as opposed to
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: swim for a second. But there is value because you
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: avoid for agency, right, and if there's a guy you want,
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: you know, again, Higgins would probably be the guy that
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: would be Closecalf.
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: The free agency thing is so big to me too.
- 1:38:42Speaker 3: But when it comes to this, because everybody says, well,
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: why don't you just wait and give up nothing and
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: pay him in free agency? But the problem is is
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: that now you're competing with eight to ten other teams
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: and we see how that goes, right, We've seen how
- 1:38:54Speaker 3: that goes the last couple of years. Uh So now
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: you're running into a situation where you're probably gonna have
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: to overpay the player even more Taxachusetts hello, right, and
- 1:39:03Speaker 3: all that's whole, that whole thing like it's Calvin Ridley
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: all over again. So that's the problem with gating until
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: free agency is you might not get the guy, yeah,
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: you know, and so that and now you're left with nothing.
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: But the thing about these level of players is, you know,
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: some teams are going to wait till the end of
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: the year because they want to see if they can
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: get something done. So it's just it was a unique
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: I'm not opposed to it. It was a unique situation.
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: It's a very unique situation. I just I still come
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: back to this team isn't tanking.
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: Okay, they should not have a fire sale.
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: So they're not and they shouldn't have a fire sale,
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: and they shouldn't be worried about adding talent because it's
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: gonna make them better this year. This team's not tanking.
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: So if you're not tanking, you're adding talent. That's the
- 1:39:42Speaker 3: way that you should look at it. And if that
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: means trading one of your you know, not not touching
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: the first round picky. It would have to take a
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: special player to touch the second round pick. But if
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: that means trading away like the Matthew Judah third round
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: pick for a good football player, I'm doing it.
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: Especially again, like I said, it's a buyer's market right now,
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: Like guys are going for less than I thought that
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: josh U j return was nuts, and I still think
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: it's probably low. But when you see what Deontay Johnson
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: went for and some of these other trades, what Cam
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: Robinson went for, right, and I'm anither one that I
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: would kind of I would have been in on that.
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: I didn't. I didn't think teams are gonna move tackles.
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: I would have been in on that, but it's you
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: want to be the team that's buying right now, Like
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: these guys are going for so much less than they're worth.
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: Everybody is, So if you get a chance to get
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: a player for cheap, you know you might as well
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: you do it now. You strike now. You do want
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: to be content in a year or two and he
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: can be here, right.
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: So we were talking about players that are hitting their
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: second contractor on the younger side of the third contract,
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: that are gonna be core players for you moving forward,
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: that you're planning on being here for the next three
- 1:40:43Speaker 3: to four years to be around Drake may in this
- 1:40:46Speaker 3: whole operation. And I just don't understand, like why wait,
- 1:40:50Speaker 3: Like what's why wait until the offseason to start making
- 1:40:53Speaker 3: moves to make this roster better? Why not make it
- 1:40:55Speaker 3: better now? And let's face it, if they go out
- 1:40:58Speaker 3: there and they trade even let's say T Higgins, Like
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: I don't think T Higgins is gonna make is going
- 1:41:03Speaker 3: to add four wins to this football team. Maybe he
- 1:41:06Speaker 3: adds a winn or two down the stretch to this
- 1:41:08Speaker 3: football team, but they're not all of a sudden going
- 1:41:10Speaker 3: from like losing out on a on a top five
- 1:41:13Speaker 3: pick to now picking sixteenth because they got Tea.
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: Winning a couple of games down the stretch wouldn't be
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: the worst thing in the world for this team. Yeah,
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: that's just plain and simple. Wouldn't be the worst thing
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: in the world for this team.
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: All right, let's take Nate's call and then we have
- 1:41:24Speaker 3: some emails here as well. Nay that trash Chicago.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: What's up?
- 1:41:29Speaker 5: What guys?
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: How you doing?
- 1:41:32Speaker 5: I want to throw another trade name at you.
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: Guys is here.
- 1:41:34Speaker 5: What do you think about it? And if you think
- 1:41:36Speaker 5: it would be a possibility, what do you.
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: Think we could get Christian Watson from the Packers?
- 1:41:41Speaker 5: And I'll take it off there.
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: Thanks guys.
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: It's a good one. The Packers moving Christian Watson? So
- 1:41:47Speaker 2: the Packers are they had all those others?
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: I would say that the Packers, we're gonna move anybody.
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: Maybe Romeo Dobbs, who was the receiver that was upset.
- 1:41:56Speaker 3: He had the one game suspension. I don't remember exactly
- 1:41:59Speaker 3: what it was for.
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: Did they have another guy that was upset too? I
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: don't think so. I think.
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: Because the Packers have four really solid receivers, they they're
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: doing it by committee.
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: Watson, Tavian Wicks have a thing. I don't think so.
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: I thought he's kind of like a Kendrick Bourne. Ye. No,
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: he's like their best player.
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: And now you know so, Watson, Dobbs, Reid Wicks is
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: like a really solid four foursome for the Packers right now.
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: Is there a possibility that one of those guys is
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: like a trade candidate? I suppose Dobbs is the one
- 1:42:34Speaker 3: that had the suspension. It was a one game suspension
- 1:42:36Speaker 3: for like violating team rules. I don't know the details
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: of what exactly he did, but.
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: I just have his Wikipedia up after reportedly staying away
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: from two days of practice due to frustration overlack involvement
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: in the passing game.
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: Yeah, so maybe he's a guy who's really a really
- 1:42:51Speaker 3: talented player, true outside X receiver.
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: And they liked him that year. I mean they Bill's
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: not here and he was running the draft board. But
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: there's still some carryover him. Yeah, and that grow right, Yeah,
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: and he can get down the field and make big
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: plays down the field. Liked that. An interesting player. Watson's got.
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: Did he sign an extension yet? He's got to be
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: coming up if he didn't, well, because he's the Cole
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: Strange here. Yeah, so he does not look like he did.
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: He's a pre agent.
- 1:43:17Speaker 3: He's a free agent in twenty six, so he's still
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: got two more years on his contract, including this year.
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: Yeah, this year, next year. So this offseas so he'd
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: be a guy you look at this offseason.
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: It's not a bad call. It's maybe a little bit
- 1:43:29Speaker 3: premature right now out because I think.
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: The Packers deadline's probably too early. They're a good team,
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: but the Packers are going for put him in the
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: bucket with DK Metcalf and T Higgins and the road. Yeah.
- 1:43:37Speaker 3: The only issue with Christian Watson is the soft tissue injuries,
- 1:43:40Speaker 3: Like he he'll have a random like ham strings and
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: things like that, groins like just pop up out of nowhere.
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: I put him on the injury report. But he's a really,
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: really good player and they need speed. Yeah, speed kills.
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: All right, A couple of email questions. We're not gonna
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: do Patty's drafting.
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: Oh yeah, what was Patty's drafting? I actually recognize most
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: of the players too, So Ted McMillan, Yeah.
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: You haven't watched ursery yet? Have you got Minnesota? And
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: and is it Noah Fan and the tight end from
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: no I'm thinking of no A Fan, the tight end
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: at Bowling Green. Somebody was probably Patty Yeah, called about
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: him last week, Harold Fannin and then Will Campbell, Trey Harris,
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: Tyler Warren. So so okay, not sure about tight ends,
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: but right he really wants a tight end apparently in
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: the I get it. You want the developmental guy behind
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: Henry and honestly, Tyler Warren Trey Harris. You I don't
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: know if he was, if that meant in order, but
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: Tyler Warren might go in the draft before Trey Harris.
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: Did I have talked to you about Trey Harris. Trey
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: Harris at the Colorado State receiver. No, that's Tory Horton.
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: I like it. It's same initials. Yeah, he's actually not
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: quite as fast, a little similar to Christian Watson. Trey
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: Harris is the guy at Ole miss who is setting
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: all those records. So I'll just give you from Draft
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: Network his pros and cons. You tell me who. This
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: sounds like strength, catch radius, length, dominant with contested catches, alignment,
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: versatile red zone threat concerns, ability to separate rat running,
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: vertical speed, kill Harry a little bit of souped up
- 1:45:06Speaker 2: to kill Harry, but so sign him up. That's so
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: basically exactly what we want. Will Campbell and Trey Harris
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: or Teed McMillan. Would you rather have the apex X
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: you're familiar with McMillan, right, and the athletic a little
- 1:45:21Speaker 2: more project y tackle or the you know, ideal prototype
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: ready to go tackle and Trey Harris. So I'm coming.
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: I've been trying to be consistent with my take on
- 1:45:35Speaker 3: this because I want it for once with the draft,
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: be consistent. I was pretty consistent wanting Drake, but we're
- 1:45:40Speaker 3: very consistent wanting Yeah. But in general, I want to
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: be consistent. And I've been a tackle guy like I've
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: been tackle tackle, tackle, tackle, mainly because when we talk
- 1:45:49Speaker 3: about this every week, I feel like we've talked about
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: it every year and they just keep kicking the can
- 1:45:54Speaker 3: down the road and eventually you're gonna have to take
- 1:45:56Speaker 3: the swing, like you're gonna have to take a tackle
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: early in the draft and hope that he's the answer.
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: So to keep kicking the can down the road is
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: a little bit frustrating.
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: With that being.
- 1:46:05Speaker 3: Said, I'm impressed with Tetmanmillan like, I think he can
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: really play. The one thing that I would say that
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: is a little bit concerning with him is that he's
- 1:46:13Speaker 3: a little inconsistent, Like he has these big games and
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: then he has.
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: Games where he's not he disappears at the time. Yes, yeah,
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: but oh, I'll say this that Arizona team around him
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: is yeah cool. Right.
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: So when I watch him in January and I started
- 1:46:25Speaker 3: to study the film, like, my guess is that it's
- 1:46:27Speaker 3: quarterback play, line play, and he's getting open every game.
- 1:46:30Speaker 2: Fafina is actually not bad. So there's an interesting thing there.
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: I think I've told you this, But so Noah Fafiita
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: is the quarterback in Arizona. Him and McMillan went to
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: high school together and they're the same year. So there's
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: some stuff they do that's like high level chemistry stuff.
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: The people who don't like McMillan, this is, I bet
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: he's gonna be a talking point. Well what does it
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: look like when he has a quarterback he hasn't played
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: with for eight years? Like, get ready for that one.
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: So you need to watch you need to watch Ursery
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: because again, you have a better eye for this stuff
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: than I do. Camberl and Banks haven't had amazing years.
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: They've been good. Banks struggle against Georgia, particularly against Michael Williams,
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: who might be a top ten pick in his own right,
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: and Ursery's kind of just been there. And I think
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: it's there's gonna be some people that will tell you.
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: And the reason I'm talking about this more vaguely is
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: because there's still a lot of football left to play
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: and we gotta go through the Senior Bowl. Ursery might
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: he's not Campbell and Banks, like if their tier one, Yeah,
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: it's not polished, he might be one a like he
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: might not be Tier two? Do you get what I'm
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: saying there? And it's if you can like that type
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: of even even what Fashanu was to to Joel like,
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: he's not yo' all, but it's Ted McMillan is clearly
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: Tier one receiver. I don't think depending on what you
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: want to do with with with with Travis Hunter, there's
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: no one a receiver like there's a clear drop off.
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: I like Isaiah bond Bouka is fine. He's not my
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: cup of tea, but I get why people like him.
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: There's a clear drop there, and it's do you get
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: a Tier one and a Tier two player tier one
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: being your biggest need, or do you skim a little
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: bit on the biggest need, which is what you're saying
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: you can't do, but you get Tier one and Tier
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: one A What this is all gonna come down is
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: what people think is and that's right.
- 1:48:25Speaker 3: But I think the concern then, just like listening to
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: you talk about it, is if er is can considered
- 1:48:30Speaker 3: to be that good, then he's gonna go high, like
- 1:48:33Speaker 3: tackles fly off the board. Well that's like if he
- 1:48:37Speaker 3: ends up being if he ends up rising in the
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: draft process, then now you're talking about getting not and
- 1:48:42Speaker 3: you know you're not getting attacked.
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: So you know, and this is where we'll get into
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: the really weird machinations of it. The two guys we
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: haven't talked about because I don't think either of us
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: have an interest in them drafting a right tackle are
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: Emery Jones and Cameron Williams, who are the right tackles. Ironically,
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: LSU in Texas game, you're gonna watch them. He had
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: a rough game, but for the most part those two
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: guys have been really good. Do you get teams that
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: either just want to right tackle or are you gonna
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: get teams that that see how good those guys are
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: and maybe think they can move right to left, and
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: maybe that pushes Ursery down the board because those two
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: guys are objectively better prospects, but the positional values not
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: the same.
- 1:49:17Speaker 3: I know that it drives and I want to talk
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: tight and so I want to wrap this. But I
- 1:49:20Speaker 3: know drives people crazy when we talk about flipping guys.
- 1:49:23Speaker 3: But just for the record, like jac Latham's flipped to
- 1:49:25Speaker 3: the left side for the Chargers and has been great.
- 1:49:27Speaker 3: So I I just I do I think it possible
- 1:49:31Speaker 3: that you can do that.
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: I do trust Scott Peters, but if that's what you're
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: gonna do, I'd rather take Ursery, who is a left
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: tackle similar range. Yeah, like I charge, I said charge,
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: I meant tell you. Yeah, However, you're gonna do this
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: like you're gonna have to move like Ellie Wolf's gonna
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: have to cook on draft night. Yeah, he's gonna have
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: to be on the phone. Yeah, because you're not doing
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: this with you know one in thirty three, two and
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: thirty four, three and thirty five whatever you wanna call it,
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: Like you're gonna have to move around to do it.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: But this is this is gonna be the big conversation
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: is gonna be. Is it Will Cambell and Calvin Banks?
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: And then you figure the rest out or is it
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: you're making a targeted move to get to you guys.
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: Now they could also go out and trade for wide
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: receiver and March and this all becomes irrelevant and then
- 1:50:09Speaker 2: it's Will Campbell or Calvin Banks end a story.
- 1:50:11Speaker 3: So if you ask me, uh, from a draft perspective,
- 1:50:15Speaker 3: the best case scenario is still trading down yeah, for
- 1:50:18Speaker 3: a haul and drafting the tackle.
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: YEP.
- 1:50:22Speaker 3: I would also say that what you just said is
- 1:50:24Speaker 3: probably the most likely scenario is that the address receiver
- 1:50:27Speaker 3: in the veteran market yep. Whether it's be a trade,
- 1:50:29Speaker 3: free agency, however that goes down with T Higgins maybe
- 1:50:32Speaker 3: going to free agency, I would expect. And look, they
- 1:50:35Speaker 3: tried it with Calvin Ridley and they didn't they didn't close.
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: But I would expect if T. Higgins is an unrestricted
- 1:50:41Speaker 3: free agent in March, which you probably will be the
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: Patriots Day one of free agency, tampering period, one hundred
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: and twenty five million dollar offered to Tea Higgins. You
- 1:50:50Speaker 3: know something crazy?
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: And I'll add this one last note on it, because
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: I know you want to move on. But if they
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: do that, so three big needs, we're pretty sure we
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: know what they're gonna be at this point. Tackle receiver, edge, Yeah,
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: all right, receivers off. I like, how use edge now,
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: edge rush or whatever? I know it well because some
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: of these guys are defensive ends, some of them are linebackers.
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: Edge all caps depends that you draft someone would be
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: all right whatever. This is a deep edge class like
- 1:51:17Speaker 2: the day too, the late day one earth you can
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: maybe get like a really good defensive end or outside
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: linebacker pass rusher without having to move back up into
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: the first round. So if you check the wide receiver,
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: now you can trade down get campbeller Banks, and maybe
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: you don't need to move back up and still get
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: an impact player. And now you get to sit on
- 1:51:38Speaker 2: that haul. And now you go into twenty twenty six
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: potentially ready to go up and strike for a second corner,
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: another pass rusher. Maybe went double up at receiver. Okay, Okay,
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: we're getting too far down the road. No, but this
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: is how you think about it. But how works I
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: last thing, and I keep on saying we want to
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: move on.
- 1:51:56Speaker 3: I wouldn't sleep on adding defense and adding edge rusher
- 1:51:59Speaker 3: in this draft. I still think tackles your biggest need
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: and you need to address that off the bat. But
- 1:52:04Speaker 3: they're thirtieth in DVA on defense, Like they haven't been
- 1:52:07Speaker 3: a good defense this year. Obviously, you're gonna get bar
- 1:52:10Speaker 3: More back, You're gonna get Bentley back, you like that.
- 1:52:13Speaker 3: But edge rusher, it's Anthony Jennings and like a not
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: a whole lot else and he's not really on white, yeah,
- 1:52:19Speaker 3: but he's sort of a tweeter. And you don't really
- 1:52:21Speaker 3: have anybody that gets up the field and rushes the
- 1:52:23Speaker 3: passer like Anthony Jennings. That's not really his game, right,
- 1:52:26Speaker 3: So I wouldn't sleep on that as being like a
- 1:52:29Speaker 3: tier one need.
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: For well, the big three needs Big three, Like we
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: have a Big three every year. Tackle. It's been tackle, receiver,
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: quarterback for a while now. Yeah, tackle in no particular order. Tackle,
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: pass rusher, yeah, and receiver. But if you signed to Higgins,
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: you checked out box, like those become the two I
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: know corners in need, linebacker, developmental tight end, maybe a
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: running back, Like that's a different kind of thing.
- 1:52:52Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, we got ten minutes to talk about
- 1:52:54Speaker 3: the Titans, which is exactly how much they deserve.
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: So the one thing, especially when we don't know who
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: their quarterback, I have three things to say about the Titans. Yeah,
- 1:53:01Speaker 2: the one nice thing I'm gonna say about the Titans
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: is that their defense is actually pretty scrappy. Their defense
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: is well ranked and the efficiency metrics, I think they're
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: ninth and DVOA they're like eleventh or twelfth and EPA
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: per play. I know that they gave up fifty two
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: points last week. I know, but trust me when I
- 1:53:18Speaker 2: tell you it was a wonky fifty two points. It
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: was big punt return, big kickoff return, big punt return
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: turnover in their own territory. Like it was a weird one.
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:53:28Speaker 3: The the Lions had like eighty passing yards in that game,
- 1:53:32Speaker 3: so it wasn't like Detroit went down up and down
- 1:53:35Speaker 3: the field. On the Titans defense, they run a lot
- 1:53:39Speaker 3: of different exotics. They are a very spin the dial
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: type of defense. These are all reasons and Girodmeo and
- 1:53:46Speaker 3: Alex van Pelt talked about it. Alex van Pelt today
- 1:53:49Speaker 3: mentioned that they don't really have tendencies, right, they just
- 1:53:51Speaker 3: kind of throw everything at you, and some teams like
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: the Jaguars are big cover two third down defense, so
- 1:53:57Speaker 3: you knew you were getting covered two on third down.
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: The Titans are not like that. The Titans play a
- 1:54:02Speaker 3: bunch of different coverages. So that's sort of why I'm
- 1:54:06Speaker 3: hoping that Drake may plays this game even more because
- 1:54:09Speaker 3: I'd like to see how he handles that. This is
- 1:54:11Speaker 3: a Baltimore flavored defense. They run a lot of pressure,
- 1:54:14Speaker 3: they run a lot of coverage, They mix it up,
- 1:54:17Speaker 3: they spin the dial, they have some wonky rotations in
- 1:54:20Speaker 3: the back end. Frankly, watching their film, it's sometimes hard
- 1:54:25Speaker 3: to identify the coverage, Like, I don't know exactly what
- 1:54:27Speaker 3: they're in. They do a lot of that, different types
- 1:54:31Speaker 3: of these fancy cover five tricks, you know, different crazy coverages.
- 1:54:36Speaker 3: So it's a tough one. It's a tough one to decipher.
- 1:54:38Speaker 3: And if Drake may gooes out there and he passes
- 1:54:41Speaker 3: this test in terms of the scheme elements and the
- 1:54:43Speaker 3: decision making and the processing, are gonna be really impressed.
- 1:54:47Speaker 3: So that was my nice thing to say about the Titans.
- 1:54:49Speaker 3: Do you have anything nice to say about the Titans?
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: Now? They gave up on my guy, Derek Henry. I
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: know I do. I'm excited. I know he's on the
- 1:54:54Speaker 2: injury report with see if he plays, but I hope
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: we get to watch Devandre Sweat. Remember how I felt
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: about him during the drafts. One of my favorite players.
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: Him and Jeffery Simmons. Inside. Jeffery Simmons another player like
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: I've always really liked. Now he's a little bit older now,
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: he's not quite what he was, but he's pretty close.
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: We talk about that. You know, the guards and Ben
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: Brown coming along, they're right there. In a spot like
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: this week, you do not want to run it between
- 1:55:17Speaker 2: the guards in this game because de Andre Sweat and
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: Jeffrey Simmons are going to be there, and those guys
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: are hard to move, so you're gonna want to run
- 1:55:23Speaker 2: it outside the tackles, and the numbers bear that out
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: going over to the offense for the Titans. This should
- 1:55:29Speaker 2: be a get right game for the Patriots defense, and
- 1:55:32Speaker 2: this should be a game where the Patriots defense comes
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: out feeling pretty good about itself. Whether it's Will Levis
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: or Mason Rudolph, the numbers are really not all that different.
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: Rudolph is a little bit more conservative, a little bit safer,
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: with the football. Will Devis is a little bit more
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: run and gun. You know, you can throw the ball
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: down the field and make some bigger plays. But for
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: the most part, from an efficiency standpoint, it's about as
- 1:55:54Speaker 2: identical as it could possibly be. They both kind of stink, right,
- 1:55:57Speaker 2: So the Patriots defense should be able to have some
- 1:56:01Speaker 2: fun in this game, I think at least, and I
- 1:56:04Speaker 2: hope they do. I want to see if they can
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: get the monkey off their back. In terms of turnovers.
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: Is not a defense that forces a lot of turnovers.
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: That's obviously very unusual. That's probably the biggest change post
- 1:56:13Speaker 2: Bill Belichick production wise with this defense. Like the turnovers
- 1:56:17Speaker 2: are not there. This Titans offense trick or treat. They
- 1:56:20Speaker 2: want to give the ball away like Halloween candy nice
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: and the Patriots should come out of this. I'm hoping
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: they come out of this game with the multiple turnovers
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: because you're not going to play the Titans every week.
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: But it's one of those things where like you get
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: a cup, regardless of how you get him, maybe you
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: start you know, maybe it starts flowing for you. Damn
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: right opens the damn you see one go in. So turnovers, turnovers, turnovers,
- 1:56:40Speaker 2: That's what I want to see if regardless who's a quarterback,
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: it'd be great if we get a Will Levis meme.
- 1:56:44Speaker 2: That'd be the cherry on top for me. But I
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: definitely want to see him go out and try to
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: get some turnovers.
- 1:56:48Speaker 3: There's two guys on this offense that where are you.
- 1:56:50Speaker 3: Tony Pollard's a good back, banged up, they can run
- 1:56:53Speaker 3: the ball. Tajay Spears also decent back. He looks like
- 1:56:56Speaker 3: he's gonna come back. And then obviously Calvin Ridley. And
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: I don't think this is hyperbole when I say that,
- 1:57:02Speaker 3: I am sure the Patriots would like it if Calvin
- 1:57:04Speaker 3: Ridley does not have a good game, right like, I
- 1:57:06Speaker 3: think one of the worst things that could happen out
- 1:57:09Speaker 3: of this game, besides somebody getting hurt or something like that,
- 1:57:12Speaker 3: is that Calvin Ridley goes for like a buck fifty
- 1:57:14Speaker 3: and two touchdowns and the Titans win, and we have
- 1:57:16Speaker 3: a week of you could have had him, You could
- 1:57:18Speaker 3: have had him, You could have had him. So my
- 1:57:20Speaker 3: expectation is that Christian Gonzales will be on Calvin Ridley
- 1:57:24Speaker 3: stop to run their run game with Tony Pollard and
- 1:57:27Speaker 3: Taja Spears, and you should be okay on the defensive
- 1:57:29Speaker 3: side of the ball. Last thing, talk a little special
- 1:57:32Speaker 3: teams because it's warranted this week.
- 1:57:33Speaker 2: Yep, this is no big punt returns.
- 1:57:35Speaker 3: This Titan special team's unit is the worst in the NFL.
- 1:57:38Speaker 3: They stink, They stink out loud. On punt coverage, they
- 1:57:43Speaker 3: are four times worse than the next closest team.
- 1:57:46Speaker 2: In terms of what yards per return.
- 1:57:48Speaker 3: In terms of DVOA on punt coverage, four times worse.
- 1:57:53Speaker 3: They are a minus twenty four on punt returns. The
- 1:57:57Speaker 3: next closest team is a minus eight. Think about that.
- 1:58:00Speaker 3: That's wild. So Marcus Jones, I think that's three times
- 1:58:04Speaker 3: where I said four. I'm terrible at math.
- 1:58:06Speaker 2: Don't make me do math. You're already using math.
- 1:58:09Speaker 3: Marcus Jones should have some opportunities in this game. They
- 1:58:12Speaker 3: had a law I can't remember at the top of
- 1:58:15Speaker 3: my head how long it was. It was a long
- 1:58:17Speaker 3: punt return touchdown by Cliff Raymond last week. I think
- 1:58:21Speaker 3: they had like one hundred and fifty yards of punt
- 1:58:23Speaker 3: return yards in this game last week for the Lions.
- 1:58:27Speaker 3: So they should have some opportunities to turn some punts
- 1:58:29Speaker 3: and this should be a game where they dominate that phase, right,
- 1:58:33Speaker 3: they should be able to really win the kicking game
- 1:58:36Speaker 3: against the Titans. I can't believe the Titans special teams
- 1:58:38Speaker 3: coordinator hasn't gotten fired. Like there're a garbage a dumpster fire,
- 1:58:42Speaker 3: like block punts, big returns.
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: It's it's been terrible. I'm trying to find the actual
- 1:58:47Speaker 2: yards per return, so but a real number to it.
- 1:58:50Speaker 3: So sorry, my fancy numbers don't work for you. Also,
- 1:58:52Speaker 3: I messed up the mat so to double edged sword.
- 1:58:56Speaker 2: Anyway, I think.
- 1:58:58Speaker 3: That about does it. So next week we'll come back
- 1:59:01Speaker 3: and trade deadline. I'm just saying this is my gut,
- 1:59:05Speaker 3: just my opinion. I think it's gonna be kind of quiet.
- 1:59:08Speaker 3: I know we all talk about the trade deadline like
- 1:59:10Speaker 3: it's the hot stove, right Like it's like.
- 1:59:12Speaker 2: The surprised if they don't move one of those two receivers.
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: I just think to get the numbers right in the room,
- 1:59:16Speaker 2: it's possible. I just don't know if they're gonna get
- 1:59:18Speaker 2: the return that's gonna make it worth it. I think
- 1:59:20Speaker 2: opening up the spot will make it worth it.
- 1:59:21Speaker 3: Yeah, he could have a josh u Ja, you know,
- 1:59:23Speaker 3: twenty twenty six to seventh for Taekwon Thorton situation, just
- 1:59:26Speaker 3: to maybe pick swap. Yeah, so we'll talk about the
- 1:59:30Speaker 3: trade line, we'll talk about this game against the Titoons,
- 1:59:33Speaker 3: and then next week.
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: Really what what was what was that? The Titos? No,
- 1:59:38Speaker 2: the Titans.
- 1:59:39Speaker 3: Okay, there you go, really looking forward to next week's game.
- 1:59:42Speaker 3: Caleb Williams against Drake May. Hopefully, hopefully neither one of
- 1:59:45Speaker 3: them gets hurt on Sunday and they play in that
- 1:59:48Speaker 3: game together one versus three. That's gonna be a lot
- 1:59:50Speaker 3: of fun. Like it's not, obviously neither team's going to
- 1:59:53Speaker 3: the super Bowl, but it's still cool to see that.
- 1:59:54Speaker 2: Give me, speaking of the Bears, give me one thought
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: on the hail Mary play.
- 1:59:58Speaker 3: My thought on the haill Mary play is that I
- 2:00:03Speaker 3: actually have a take on this, and give me two minutes.
- 2:00:07Speaker 3: My take on this is that we are failing as
- 2:00:11Speaker 3: a football Cognizanti that we are not rushing quarterbacks on hill.
- 2:00:15Speaker 2: Mary's Like, why cognisant? Like just football people, coaches. I've
- 2:00:23Speaker 2: seen this take this week. This is the new it
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: thing you should blitz on a hail Mary. I'm not
- 2:00:27Speaker 2: saying all out blitz. I'm not going Greg Willie you're
- 2:00:29Speaker 2: not going engage.
- 2:00:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not going to engage eight, But can I
- 2:00:33Speaker 3: get like a real rush, like not like a two
- 2:00:35Speaker 3: man like, okay, we're gonna kind of just like Jaden
- 2:00:38Speaker 3: Daniels had thirteen seconds thirteen seconds to throw the ball,
- 2:00:43Speaker 3: the longest time to throw of the next Gen era
- 2:00:46Speaker 3: twelve point seventy five seconds, get some pressure on the quarterback,
- 2:00:51Speaker 3: a little bit of pressure because as actually Bill said
- 2:00:54Speaker 3: it on TV on his seventeen Jobs that if you
- 2:00:58Speaker 3: can get pressure in the quarterback's face, well now he
- 2:01:00Speaker 3: can't step into the throw, and now he can't reach
- 2:01:03Speaker 3: the end zone.
- 2:01:03Speaker 2: You know who did pressure? Didn't? Didn't Dan Campbell blitz
- 2:01:08Speaker 2: on a play action the other week? Yeah?
- 2:01:10Speaker 3: Yeah, So it depends on where you are on the field,
- 2:01:13Speaker 3: because like if a go ball that like hits a
- 2:01:15Speaker 3: guy in stride can beat you, then you can't really all.
- 2:01:18Speaker 2: Out pressure like the thirty five Yeah yeah yeah.
- 2:01:20Speaker 3: But if you're like if they have to throw at
- 2:01:22Speaker 3: sixty yards like Jayden Daniels had to do on Sunday,
- 2:01:25Speaker 3: then throw the kitchen sink at him, Like what's gonna happen?
- 2:01:30Speaker 3: It's it's beyond me. Why we the to the two
- 2:01:33Speaker 3: man mush rush or I think the Chicago had a
- 2:01:36Speaker 3: spy on Jayden Daniels.
- 2:01:38Speaker 2: I get that. I'll be honest, I get that. How
- 2:01:40Speaker 2: do you get that he's not gonna run for seventy yards?
- 2:01:42Speaker 2: You can get a chunk and then you get into
- 2:01:44Speaker 2: a lateral play and on that guy specifically. I get it.
- 2:01:48Speaker 3: I'm just saying a real rush. I'm not saying all
- 2:01:50Speaker 3: out Billitz. I'm not saying game four four man.
- 2:01:53Speaker 2: Maybe you throw a stunt in there something like that. Yeah,
- 2:01:57Speaker 2: it's an interesting thought. The big thing is, don't this
- 2:02:01Speaker 2: is the way hail mary? That that part of the
- 2:02:02Speaker 2: reason that plays so perfectly. People think of hail Mary's
- 2:02:05Speaker 2: as like DeAndre Hopkins going up right in Arizona b Buffalo.
- 2:02:08Speaker 2: Make No, that's not how most hail Marys are completed.
- 2:02:11Speaker 2: Most of them are who's the who's the furthest guy back,
- 2:02:14Speaker 2: who's closest to the end line, And you're tree if
- 2:02:16Speaker 2: you're the offense trying to tip it back to that guy.
- 2:02:18Speaker 2: If you're the defense trying to tip it forward. Uh.
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: Great play by Noel Brown. Excellent, excellent play by Noel Brown. Terrible,
- 2:02:25Speaker 2: zactly terrible play by Tyren Stevenson. That is such a
- 2:02:29Speaker 2: good meme though, where he's like Sandy, do you if
- 2:02:31Speaker 2: you look and you watch it, He's actually not taunting
- 2:02:34Speaker 2: Washington fans. There's Bears fans there. He's like trying to
- 2:02:37Speaker 2: celebrate with them, and the ball gets snapped and all
- 2:02:40Speaker 2: the Bears fans are telling him like, no, go to
- 2:02:42Speaker 2: the play. It's happening. What a moment. That was awesome.
- 2:02:46Speaker 3: Okay, that's my college football. He things really really quickly.
- 2:02:49Speaker 3: Patriots injury report just came out, so he can add
- 2:02:51Speaker 3: this to the end.
- 2:02:52Speaker 2: Of the das. No changes right from Yes, there are.
- 2:02:54Speaker 3: Some changes, but in a good way. So Drake may
- 2:02:57Speaker 3: still listed as limited with the concussion, Christian Ellis limited
- 2:03:01Speaker 3: with an abdomen is a new one, Vederian low Back
- 2:03:05Speaker 3: limited participant with the ankle and shoulder, and Jacqueline Roy
- 2:03:09Speaker 3: also back with the neck injury that he missed practiced
- 2:03:12Speaker 3: last week, and Jalen Polk a full participant. So I
- 2:03:15Speaker 3: would expect that he's off the injury report by the
- 2:03:17Speaker 3: end of the week and back on Sunday. But like
- 2:03:19Speaker 3: once again, Drake may officially limited again today with the concussion.
- 2:03:24Speaker 3: So that's your Patriots injury report. That's your catch twenty two.
