- 0:00Hello everyone. Thanks for listening to come.
- 0:02Follow me, insights with Taylor and Tyler, presented by
- 0:04scripture Central. We use a lot of visuals in our
- 0:07videos. So if you want to see the
- 0:08visuals, we invite you to find us on YouTube.
- 0:11Thanks for listening and enjoy. I'm Taylor and I'm Tyler.
- 0:16This is scripture Central's. Come follow me insights this
- 0:19week, Luke 22 and John 18. If you look at all of Luke
- 0:23chapter 22 it begins back with the last supper and we've
- 0:28already covered that from Matthew and Mark perspective.
- 0:31So we're going to jump forward to the very end of that
- 0:35experience in the upper room with a statement that Jesus
- 0:38makes to Peter that is unique to the Gospel of Luke.
- 0:43So we're going to pick this up in verse 31 and the Lord said
- 0:47unto Simon, Simon behold. Satan has desired to have you
- 0:53that he may sift. You as wheat Joseph Smith
- 0:57adjusted that verse to say, Simon behold.
- 1:01Satan has desired you that he may sift the children of the
- 1:05Kingdom as wheat. It's not just you that he's
- 1:10after Peter, he's after you so that he can sift the children of
- 1:13the kingdom is wheat. That's, that's a prophetic.
- 1:18A powerfully prophetic addition to this idea that if Satan could
- 1:23have taken down Peter, he would have had much more power over
- 1:27over those early members of the church, following the teachings
- 1:32of Peter after the Ascension of Christ.
- 1:35It also just reminds me that all of us need to be on the lookout.
- 1:38Gout that first of all, we all be challenged tried tempted as
- 1:42part of the process of learning and getting the opportunity to
- 1:46choose God in the face of challenge but also that none of
- 1:49us should take life and our spirituality so lightly that we
- 1:53think oh well I have a testimony, all is well in Zion
- 1:57that we may also find ourselves sifted and if we're not careful
- 2:00that, continue to grow ourselves in the strength of the lord, we
- 2:04can be sifted out. So now watch what the Lord does
- 2:08to help Peter in this effort verse 32, but I have prayed for
- 2:14thee that thy faith fail, not just, isn't it amazing.
- 2:22Once again, the contrast on the scripture page, Satan is
- 2:26Desiring to have you so that he can destroy you.
- 2:30And in the process, destroy as many other people as possible.
- 2:33And Jesus is saying, but I have prayed for He that I Faith fail.
- 2:39Not both beings. Jesus and the devil are seeking
- 2:45after Peter one with the intent, to drag him down, and destroy
- 2:49the other with the intent to lift him up and strengthen him,
- 2:53and feel him with faith. I just it's obvious.
- 2:57I get it, it's obvious. But it's fun to see repeatedly
- 3:01on the scripture page that contrast and honestly it should
- 3:05it should strengthen Us in moments of Temptation to just
- 3:09pause for a moment and throw some, some thoughts heavenward
- 3:17and just analyze who it is. That's actually tempting.
- 3:20You and what is intended as what is purposes to me, it's
- 3:24empowering against the power of the devil.
- 3:28Did you see the underlying Greek word X labo here?
- 3:33Has the sense of Of to be left out, or to die out, or to come
- 3:40to an end. So when Jesus says so that you
- 3:43fail not, you could say, so you don't come to an end.
- 3:47So you don't die. Now, we all die.
- 3:49But we're talking about death, that's permanent the spiritual
- 3:52death. Those monsters that we hear
- 3:54about in The Book of Mormon. So, even the underlying Greek
- 3:57word conveys, a sense you're talking about, Tyler, it's
- 3:59beautiful. Now the second half first 32
- 4:02listen to these words and When thou art converted strengthen
- 4:08thy brethren. Once again, the contrast here
- 4:11between verse 31 and 32, the devil is wanting to sift you and
- 4:16your and many others as wheat. And Christ is trying to
- 4:20strengthen you and strengthen your brethren through your
- 4:25conversion. Now do any of you find it, odd
- 4:28that here we are three years into the savior's Ministry.
- 4:31You know, the Miracles that Peter has witnessed firsthand.
- 4:37He's been there for many of them keys.
- 4:40Listen to the teachings, he's watched the interactions, he's
- 4:43heard the sermons he's given up his business.
- 4:48He has spent three years with an itinerant preacher with not a
- 4:52way to make a living. And so, you would think that
- 4:55Peter has already converted God. And yet there seems to be more
- 5:00that Jesus is asking from. So here he is in that last
- 5:04supper event saying to Peter, when you're converted
- 5:08strengthen, your brother. And implying There's still room
- 5:12to grow fascinating when you tie it into teachings from the
- 5:17Gospel of John, his discourse, about the comforter, and the,
- 5:21the holy spirit, that would be sent.
- 5:24And his promise, that after his Ascension, he would send the
- 5:29Holy Ghost. This, this gift of the Holy
- 5:31Ghost being poured out. If you look at Peter, the
- 5:36Apostle before Acts chapter 2 and then you look at Peter, the
- 5:41Apostle after Acts chapter 2, there really seems to be a
- 5:47strengthening a deepening of his of his power as the chief
- 5:53Apostle, after the, the day of the Pentecost that outpouring of
- 5:58the spirit, which seems to by many measures be that that he's
- 6:03fully. Inverted that point after having
- 6:06witnessed, the resurrected Christ spent 40 days with him
- 6:09and then a, maybe a roughly a week later having that Pentecost
- 6:12experience the Peter, the Apostle moving forward from that
- 6:17point on seems fearless and, and powerful.
- 6:22And he is constantly strengthening his Brethren,
- 6:25which if you stop and think about it, I could be wrong here
- 6:30but I don't know of anybody in the New Testament.
- 6:33Who receives more corrective feedback more, what could be
- 6:38called gentle discipline than Peter from Jesus.
- 6:43Jesus seems to always be shaping him in correcting him.
- 6:48And yet, Peter took it so well and he adapted so, well, that
- 6:53Jesus kept giving it and we get an example in the opposite side
- 6:59of Judas who was corrected. Once when he complains about
- 7:04Mary breaking the, the spikenard ointment and putting it on the
- 7:07savior's feet, Jesus corrects him once and in the synoptics,
- 7:11the next thing he does is he goes to the chief priests to
- 7:15conspire about how he's going to betray Jesus.
- 7:19I wonder if there's an element buried deep in these two,
- 7:25contrasting stories of whom the Lord.
- 7:28Loveth the Lord chasing us. He does that.
- 7:33He corrects, not because he likes punishing, but because he
- 7:38loves refining, he loves disciplining in the best census
- 7:43of that word. Turning you into a true follower
- 7:47of him means that he's not always going to Pat you on the
- 7:50back. In fact, it's fascinating to me
- 7:53how our very bodies were created.
- 7:57The Lord made it very difficult for us to Pat ourselves on the
- 8:00back or two Ourselves in the pants.
- 8:03Consequently, I think we shouldn't do too much of either.
- 8:05One of those two things, but when we turn to the Lord and say
- 8:09what lack I yet, correct me, help me.
- 8:13Then he will give us those at times chastening whom the Lord.
- 8:18Loveth, he chasteneth, he'll give us those those corrective
- 8:21moments to shape us and help us move forward.
- 8:24You draw one of your perfect circles doesn't have to be super
- 8:27big. I love watching Tyler, draw
- 8:29these circles. These these circles are fun.
- 8:31I can't I squares, right? I try to stay in shape this way.
- 8:37so on OK from a teaching and learning standpoint learning is
- 8:41a cycle and in learning you have moments of like input where
- 8:46maybe you have some content that's given to you, your read
- 8:50something, you see something or you have some kind of
- 8:52experience, but it's interesting that a lot of learning that
- 8:56happens in our world is just a lot of inputs that just the
- 8:59teacher says something, or you read something or you see
- 9:03something, or maybe you have some experience, and that's
- 9:05great, but the learning Loop Is closed.
- 9:08When you add two crucial things, which we see here in the text,
- 9:13it's feedback and reflection. So in your own life, either for
- 9:28yourself or if you're a teacher or parent or somebody who loves
- 9:31other people and you're in a stewardship role where you're
- 9:34helping people to learn, remember, we are on this Earth
- 9:38to learn to be like God, to learn, to choose him and learn
- 9:41many things. If you want to be a great
- 9:43learner, you need feedback and reflection otherwise you only
- 9:48have half the circle. And we get what we see.
- 9:51Jesus giving his disciples is feedback and an opportunity to
- 9:56reflect on that feedback so they can act and get new experience.
- 10:01Again, the experience draws you further up in the learning Loop
- 10:05for more feedback and more reflection.
- 10:08So as we as we look at that situation, as far as he got the
- 10:14feedback, now he gets to reflect on that.
- 10:18The fascinating thing is, when thou art converted strengthen
- 10:23thy Brethren. If you look at that word in the
- 10:25Greek, it opens up A New Perspective.
- 10:28For us, it's time to start with the Latin which we get into
- 10:31English is convert. And the con here, can me is an
- 10:36intensifier and vert comes from our word that your connect that
- 10:41you are aware of. You've already seen the word
- 10:43verse and we read verses and along Time ago, in the ancient
- 10:48past, people would read the scriptures.
- 10:51They had read this way and then they would turn and read back
- 10:54this way and it keep turning at the end of every line.
- 10:57And they're called versus because you would turn at the
- 11:00end of every line. It's all about turning.
- 11:03So the word, vert literally means to turn.
- 11:07So, let's write that up. So it means to turn and The Cone
- 11:18means it's kind of intensifier. So it's a very intense or very
- 11:23complete and full turning. So you could be, you could be
- 11:28verted, you could be turned or you be converted which is fully
- 11:32turned, not just part way but all the way but then
- 11:35significantly in Greek, we have this words called a piece
- 11:39Truffles and it's related to a word that you're also.
- 11:42So familiar with in English the word trophy.
- 11:46So trophies were familiar with these are items.
- 11:49We give people to congratulate them on a job.
- 11:52Well done, you've won something you're the champion or this word
- 11:57comes from ancient. Lee is in Warfare when two
- 12:00armies would come together. Eventually, one Army would begin
- 12:03to Prevail the 2nd Army sensing, they're going to lose those
- 12:08soldiers would drop all of their weapons and their Shields And
- 12:12run the other way they would turn and run and they didn't
- 12:16want to be encumbered or held back with any heavy equipment,
- 12:20you want to be able to outrun the other Army.
- 12:23That's got the heavy equipment that's trying to Now kill you.
- 12:26So you would drop your equipment and turn and run the winning
- 12:30Army. Now gets to collect these object
- 12:34lessons of their Victory, the trophies that are evidence that
- 12:39the other Army has turned. And run.
- 12:43And the question then is, what are the trophies of our
- 12:48conversion? What are we willing to drop at
- 12:51the feet of the Savior or drop behind us and turn fully to the
- 12:56Savior? So, when we are seeking to be
- 12:58converted, the full turning happens as we are willing to
- 13:04drop those things that keep us from being focused on God and we
- 13:08all can think of things that we can let go in our lives.
- 13:11And the Book of Mormon has got some Examples of Lima Knights
- 13:14who buried their weapons of war because it was keeping them from
- 13:18fully turning to God. They wanted to walk away from
- 13:21anger and and the lust of hurting other people.
- 13:26We also have another lamanite king who says, Lord, I will give
- 13:30away all my sins. I will hand over my trophies, so
- 13:34that I might Know Thee. And I love this verse that,
- 13:37Peter can represent all of us that Jesus invites us to be
- 13:41fully. Converted.
- 13:42And when we've experienced the fullness of his love and
- 13:45atonement, the invitation is help others to also turn, love
- 13:49them, encourage them. Be patient as they work through
- 13:52that long process, Jesus was patient with Peter, it took him
- 13:56some time to learn how to be fully converted.
- 13:59Jesus did not Place final judgment on Peter.
- 14:02When Peter denied him three times Jesus allowed Peter, the
- 14:06opportunity to become his best self.
- 14:08And we to when we are fully converted can also learn to live
- 14:11in. Love for those who are also in
- 14:13process. So now we jump to verse 39 in
- 14:17Luke's account. We go into the guests Emily's
- 14:21Garden. He never mentions it by name.
- 14:25Verse 39, says, any came out and went as he was wont to the Mount
- 14:30of Olives that word, wo NT is an Old English way of saying as he
- 14:37was like accustomed. Often did Did.
- 14:42So they must have slept at the base of the Mount of Olives,
- 14:46they're probably in The Grotto of Gethsemane or in that region.
- 14:50Many times. This is this is a common
- 14:54occurrence for them and his disciples also followed him and
- 14:58when he was at the place. So we have to go to Matthew and
- 15:03Mark and and to John to get the location being as simony when he
- 15:08was at the police, he said unto them.
- 15:09Pray that ye enter not into To Temptation and he was withdrawn
- 15:14from them about a stone's cast and kneeled down and prayed.
- 15:20So, he doesn't give you any of the details of eight being left
- 15:23behind in Peter. James and John going.
- 15:25A little further, as you got back in, Matthew's account.
- 15:29And now here's his prayer verse 42.
- 15:31He kneeled down and prayed saying.
- 15:34Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me,
- 15:40nevertheless Not my will, but thine be done.
- 15:46And now we see what the father's will was after this prayer that,
- 15:52you know, please remove this cup.
- 15:53We know what Jesus is Will was, but he swallows his will up into
- 15:57the will of the father. And let's see what the father's
- 15:59going to do is kind of the point here, verse 43 says, and there
- 16:05appeared, an angel unto him from Heaven, strengthening him and
- 16:10being in an Agony, he prayed more earnestly and his sweat was
- 16:14as it were Great drops of blood falling to the ground.
- 16:19Joseph Smith translation says and he sweat as it were great
- 16:24drops of blood. So it wasn't he sweating and it
- 16:28looks like blood flying around josef's translation lines up
- 16:31beautifully with what we learn in the Book of Mormon as well as
- 16:36the Doctrine and Covenants. This is triangulated that he is
- 16:40bleeding from every pore. I remember some years ago I was
- 16:45talking. Into a friend, Don Perry he's a
- 16:48Hebrew scholar of Brigham Young University, and he shared this
- 16:50interested in sight with me that in the Old Testament law.
- 16:54If you were bleeding, you were technically ritually impure, and
- 16:58could not participate in Temple Services, until you had gone
- 17:02through the appropriate. Rituals to be cleansed virtually
- 17:05cleansed. Well Jesus, at this point is the
- 17:09most ritually impure person on the face of the Earth.
- 17:13It's another way that he has to send.
- 17:15Ended below all things to suffer, even more than any one
- 17:19of us ever suffered. So he might know how to succor
- 17:21us. So, so many beautiful things in
- 17:24this with, that's one takeaway. I get his willingness to
- 17:28experience far beyond what any one of us would ever experience.
- 17:33Now there's there's a little caveat here in verse 43 and 44.
- 17:39If you look at Bible Hub.com and you look at multiple English
- 17:44translation versions of the Bible, you will see that in some
- 17:49of them verse 43 and 44 are missing they don't show up in
- 17:56the in many of these English translations of the Bible.
- 18:01And the reason is, if you go back to our earliest
- 18:04manuscripts, those two verses are only in about half of those.
- 18:08Those earliest copies of the New Testament in Greek.
- 18:13So in some of them, it goes straight from verse 42 down to
- 18:16verse 45, completely, skipping, 43 and 44.
- 18:19So, it depends on which manuscript family.
- 18:23You are looking at whether or not you're going to translate
- 18:26those two verses. our friend and colleague, there BYU Lincoln
- 18:32Bloom, L wrote an incredible article a few years ago, because
- 18:37in academic circles the conclusion, Up to that time.
- 18:44Was that these verses were added later on, by people, in the
- 18:52early Christian Church to push back against the Dosa test
- 18:57Doctrine. There were actually Sunday
- 19:00School classes in that early Christian church where you have
- 19:03members of your congregation sitting there as Christians
- 19:06saying. Yeah, we're do statists.
- 19:09And some of your thinking what is a Dosa test of do?
- 19:12It's just is one who believes that Jesus never fully was
- 19:17embodied that he never actually had a body of Flesh and Bone
- 19:22because he's God and he couldn't have become that defiled by
- 19:27living in a body of Flesh. Because flesh is is unclean and
- 19:30we can't have God being unclean and tail.
- 19:32Just got through talking about that moment.
- 19:35Being the most ritually impure possible if he's bleeding from
- 19:41every port and So, the dose it's his Doctrine was such that they
- 19:45would say, it just looked like Jesus had a body, but he didn't
- 19:48really defile himself by taking upon Him flesh.
- 19:52That's you could see how people get to that, you know, without
- 19:56further light and knowledge. If all you have is a few words
- 19:58on the page and you get let people debate long enough
- 20:00without having the spirit interesting things can happen.
- 20:04Yeah. So so the philosophy in
- 20:09scholarly circles, was? Yeah, Luke would never Written
- 20:13verse 43 and 44. Somebody later on added it to
- 20:17try to show no. See, Jesus really did have a
- 20:20body and they're an angel really did come and help him because he
- 20:26needed it and to push back against that that what they saw
- 20:30as heretic Dosa to Stockton. Yeah.
- 20:33So the claim that it's a it's a late addition and it's
- 20:38interesting. What Lincoln was able to
- 20:41discover through his studies This, which was beautiful
- 20:44because he came at this from the perspective of the Book of
- 20:47Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, saying, no, Jesus
- 20:49bled from every pore, this is good Doctrine with the
- 20:53assumption that Luke, The Physician would pay attention to
- 20:58that more so than Matthew and Mark and John.
- 21:02So on that note, it has been medically documented where
- 21:07people have sweat blood when they're under extreme duress.
- 21:12And Sure, it's rare. But in the medical literature,
- 21:15it's happened. And so it's interesting that you
- 21:17have Luke who we know to be a physician, you would care about
- 21:21this, he would understand like this is such a significant
- 21:25suffering. I got to explain to you how bad
- 21:28the suffering was. This is what happened.
- 21:30He would understand the medical diagnosis.
- 21:33So so the contribution that that Lincoln Bloom L made to this,
- 21:37this set of verses is that instead of assuming that it was
- 21:42Just added later on by somebody, to try to push back the Dosa
- 21:46tests, what if it had actually been removed?
- 21:50What if Luke actually originally wrote it?
- 21:52Because that would line up with our restoration scripture and
- 21:55later on certain people removed it, out of their copies of the
- 22:00Bible, as they were making them to meet their own view, their
- 22:05own View, and quite frankly to make their missionary efforts,
- 22:10perhaps a little easier because About early Christian
- 22:15missionaries, going through the Greco-Roman World preaching,
- 22:20these scriptures, and think of the Greco, Roman Pantheon of
- 22:25gods. And goddesses is there is there
- 22:28a god in the Roman, or the Greek pantheon?
- 22:32The could ever suffer Agony. I'll go Nia this intense
- 22:37suffering, any of them, even think of the legendary Hercules.
- 22:41Ultimately, he Just overcomes all these challenges to show
- 22:45that he is more than your typical human as toes pointing
- 22:49out, what good Greco Roman citizen is going to be enticed
- 22:53to worship. A God, who seems to be so earthy
- 22:58and so capable of suffering. What did Paul say?
- 23:03It's foolishness to the wise or to the Greeks and the stumbling
- 23:06block to the Jews. It just really got people
- 23:09tripped up ancient li like this is not the kind of guy that I
- 23:12would want to spend time paying attention to, so you can imagine
- 23:16that potentially, you might have some well-meaning missionaries
- 23:20or other copyists, who are trying to entice people to
- 23:23understand Jesus, without sharing some perspectives on
- 23:26Jesus. It might be hard or distasteful
- 23:29for people to understand. Yeah.
- 23:30So you basically have three things in those two verses,
- 23:34number one, and angel came and strengthened him.
- 23:37Do you see why first century missionary might have a
- 23:42difficult Ulti teaching that to Greco-Roman audiences, that an
- 23:46angel had to come and strengthen our God.
- 23:49And number two, that he was in an Agony in an uggo.
- 23:56Nia and number three, that he bled from from his sweat was, as
- 24:00it were great drops of blood falling to the ground.
- 24:03So this isn't intended to be this huge philosophical or
- 24:08scholarly discussion. It's to show the complexity of
- 24:12when you get Into biblical studies.
- 24:14They're all these differing opinions.
- 24:16And can I just say what a blessing it is to have the Book
- 24:19of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the pearl of great
- 24:21price. And more importantly, perhaps is
- 24:25living prophets who can help us understand and understand
- 24:30interpret the words that come to us in the scriptures so that we
- 24:34can have a firm foundation for our faith that Jesus Christ went
- 24:40into guest cemani. And he actually did suffer
- 24:46infinite agonies, an angel did come to strengthen him.
- 24:49He did bleed from every pore why?
- 24:52He was partaking of the bitter cup to use his wording of
- 24:57symbolism, because we put all of our bitterness into that cup.
- 25:03He's taking it into him and he's experiencing everything that we
- 25:07talked about in that previous couple weeks ago, the lesson
- 25:11from Matthew and Mark In Gethsemane, those infinite, deep
- 25:16impossible to comprehend pains and it doesn't, it doesn't
- 25:22bother us to see an angel coming to strengthen him and and to see
- 25:27him in during this infinite agony.
- 25:31So, it's beautiful. When you can not just take what
- 25:36the used to be the scholarly consensus and just say, well, I
- 25:39guess that must be true but add to To it, what we understand
- 25:43from restoration scripture and figure out what we really
- 25:47understand in the latter days moving forward.
- 25:52Now let's pick up Luke's account of the arrest.
- 25:56Verse 45, when he rose up from prayer and was come to his
- 25:59disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow and said
- 26:04unto them. Why sleepy rise and pray lest ye
- 26:07enter Temptation into temptation.
- 26:11And then verse 47. Tells you while he yet, spake
- 26:13Behold a multitude and he that was called Judas.
- 26:16One of the twelve went before them and Drew near unto Jesus,
- 26:19to kiss him. So in Luke's account, he only
- 26:22wakes them up. Once in Matthew's account, he
- 26:25goes out and finds Peter, James, and John sleeping, three
- 26:28different times and wakes them up each time and then goes back
- 26:32into the garden. And now Judas comes into
- 26:37Gethsemane. You'll remember that earlier
- 26:40Earlier in this year we talked about this concept of
- 26:45christology which is a study of the the person the the men, the
- 26:50mission of Jesus Christ who was he and a high christology
- 26:55emphasizes the Divine. The Godly the miraculous
- 27:00attributes of Jesus Christ, a low christology emphasizes the
- 27:05human, the Mortal, the Earthly aspects of Christ's life And his
- 27:11ministry, John's gospel. As we've mentioned clear back in
- 27:15January is the highest christology perspective,
- 27:20christological perspective of the four gospel writers.
- 27:23If you were to read all of John's 21 chapters in one
- 27:27sitting and ask yourself, where is John portraying, the Divinity
- 27:33of Christ and where is he showing more?
- 27:35The humanity you're going to find elements of both, but it's
- 27:38much more emphasized on this. Hi christology in verse 10, says
- 27:43when Jesus had spoken these words which is the intercessory
- 27:47prayer from John 17, he went forth with his disciples over
- 27:51the brook kedron where was a garden into the which he entered
- 27:56and his disciples. So we combined the word Garden
- 27:59here with Gethsemane for Matthews account.
- 28:02And we often refer to it all as The Garden of Gethsemane.
- 28:07And he's got his disciples with him.
- 28:09And look at verse 2 and Judas. Also, which betrayed him knew
- 28:12the place for Jesus oft times, resorted, thither with his
- 28:17disciples. In other words, Judas has spent
- 28:19many a night in Gethsemane, with the apostles, in which Jesus,
- 28:23and he knows where to find him when he brings this, this band
- 28:26of men with him. And verse 3 says, Judas, then
- 28:30having received a band of men and officers from the chief
- 28:33priests and Pharisees and they came thither with lanterns and
- 28:37torches and weapons. Fascinating.
- 28:41I believe it was Elder Maxwell. Who once said there, so
- 28:44spiritually blinded they need lanterns and torches in order to
- 28:48see the light of the world on that dark night and Jesus verse
- 28:554 therefore knowing all things that should come upon him went
- 28:59forth and said unto them whom seek ye he's not afraid, he's
- 29:04not cowering back. He knows what's going to go on a
- 29:06just shows up and I even think about the way John Does this
- 29:10that he's focusing on these core afterwards?
- 29:12These Divine qualities of Jesus and we shouldn't feel like,
- 29:18gosh, John you should have also told us what Matthew and Mark
- 29:21told us instead, what we get is a fuller view.
- 29:23It just like if a friend told another friend about you versus
- 29:28maybe a child or a parent said something about you, you're
- 29:31still the same person, but the emphasis may be different and
- 29:34people might get a different perspective.
- 29:36For example, my kids have a certain Who I am and people at
- 29:41work, see me in a different way and people who meet me out in
- 29:44public, it's different and I feel the glory that we have
- 29:49someone like John who so motivated in his testimony to
- 29:53witness of the Divinity of Jesus, that he would Shine the
- 29:57spotlight on the light of the world.
- 30:00And yet we also have Luke and Matthew and Mark who are willing
- 30:04to talk more about the humanity that we get the Fuller picture.
- 30:09Because of these for good and what I would say, faithful
- 30:13Witnesses of Jesus Christ. It's fascinating from John's
- 30:16perspective, the crowd standing there.
- 30:20And the implication from the, the synoptics account is that
- 30:25Judas has already given the sign and the band of men with their
- 30:28lanterns and torches and weapons are standing there and nobody's
- 30:31moving, and Jesus steps forward and says whom seek ye.
- 30:36And look at the response. This is beautiful first five.
- 30:39They Him, Jesus of Nazareth, and Jesus saith unto them.
- 30:44I am, he can I suggest you that? Once again, this is one of those
- 30:51places where the King James translators italicized words
- 30:55that they're adding of their own accord, that they're not
- 30:59translating those words, this word he is italicized because
- 31:03it's not in any of the Greek manuscripts that they're using
- 31:06to make their translation what he said in the The Greek was a
- 31:11go Amy. Now he's not speaking Greek, he
- 31:14would be speaking Aramaic. But in this context the a going
- 31:18me in Greek implies that he just used the Unspeakable name of God
- 31:26from the Old Testament from the burning bush, speaking to Moses,
- 31:29who should I tell them? Sent me, I am a go Amy, it's The
- 31:34Great I Am or the Yahweh of the Old Testament because he's
- 31:39speaking and Make he likely as using a variant of what Moses
- 31:43would have heard from God in Exodus 3:14, which is actually a
- 31:49a share FTA. And so Aramaic is not that
- 31:53different, so he would have been saying something like this and
- 31:56that's what gets the some of the Jewish leaders so much.
- 32:00So, did you catch the significance here?
- 32:03His question was whom seek. Ye they said, we seek Jesus of
- 32:07Nazareth and his answer isn't oh.
- 32:09Oh, I am he, I am Jesus of Nazareth.
- 32:12He said it. What comes to us in the Greek
- 32:14ego? Eimi.
- 32:15Which is Yahweh. Jehovah.
- 32:18The Great. I Am, you're seeking Jesus of
- 32:21Nazareth. Hey, girl.
- 32:23Amy Jesus of Nazareth is Jehovah of the Old Testament?
- 32:29Is this implication here. Now, keep in mind which group in
- 32:33this Garden that night with the moon somewhere, full moon
- 32:37overhead somewhere middle of the night here, which group is
- 32:42armed. It says verse 6 as soon as as he
- 32:49had said unto them. I am they went backward and fell
- 32:54to the ground. Again, the sign of his power and
- 32:58Divinity, and these humans have really nothing that they can do
- 33:03against him. We even consider that he knows
- 33:07everything. He doesn't even need to wait for
- 33:11Judas to betray him. He already knows what's
- 33:14happened. He doesn't need to wait for that
- 33:15kiss. If you picture this
- 33:18geographically speaking, the Mount of Olives would be going
- 33:22up behind us here, as you picture this to the top and
- 33:27guests Emma knees down here at the base of the Mount of Olives.
- 33:30And then you get the Kidron Brook, and then you get a steep
- 33:33slope up to Temple, mount to the West.
- 33:37These people came I'm from Jerusalem.
- 33:39So they would have come either down or up, the Kidron Valley
- 33:42here. Now, they're coming up into the
- 33:45garden to arrest Jesus, so that they're looking up at him and he
- 33:50says, hey, go Amy or Yahweh? They fall backwards to the
- 33:54ground looking at him. And so Jesus has to step forward
- 34:00again. Then asked, he them again, whom
- 34:05seek ye and now they're on the ground.
- 34:10We seek Jesus of Nazareth. And Jesus answered.
- 34:15I have told you that I am and once again the word he is
- 34:21italicized it you can cross it out and it makes more sense
- 34:25doctrinally. If therefore ye seek me let
- 34:28these go their way now. Can you picture this moment?
- 34:34It's dark. I mean you've got a full moon
- 34:37overhead but it but it's night. They're on the ground.
- 34:41They're looking at him. They've got the Torches.
- 34:43You an almost here. The flickering of the flames in
- 34:47your imagination. As they're looking at him.
- 34:51Have you ever wondered why they fell backwards to the ground?
- 34:53Is it just because of what he said?
- 34:56Or is it because of how he said it can I suggest to you?
- 35:02That this world has never known the kind of majesty and power
- 35:08that exuded from Jesus on that occasion in that Garden on that
- 35:14night. He just completed the first
- 35:18phase of the infinite agonies of his atonement in our behalf.
- 35:24And he's now risen from the ground in that now.
- 35:28Come to meet them having blood from every pore I'm suggesting
- 35:32to you that the people when they come they thought they were
- 35:35coming to arrest a man named Jesus of Nazareth, and now
- 35:40they've seen the sign given by Judas.
- 35:42If you use the synoptic accounts, the kiss, and they
- 35:45didn't do anything. Jesus has come forward and ask
- 35:48them and they feel a Majesty that they can't describe the
- 35:53sent them backward to the ground.
- 35:54And now he's asked him again and they're still not moving.
- 35:58And can you picture this moment of Stillness of quietness on
- 36:02that night? And Peter is standing there
- 36:06thinking. Aha, this is my moment because
- 36:11earlier, in one of the synoptic accounts were told that they
- 36:16brought two swords with them to the Garden that night.
- 36:19So Peter Shing pulls out the sword and by the way it's
- 36:24actually a short sword. It's like stabbing knife.
- 36:27It might be about this big not particularly but he's a
- 36:30fisherman. So Peter rushes forward and
- 36:34We're told verse 10 then, Peter Simon.
- 36:36Peter having a sword drew it and smote the high priests servant
- 36:42and cut off his right. Ear the servants name was
- 36:47malchus Now this is fascinating because all four gospel writers
- 36:52refer to somebody getting their ear cut off that night and guess
- 36:56cemani. Only John gives you his name
- 37:00Malcolm us and tells you it's malkos right here.
- 37:04The got cut off by Peter. There's only one gospel writer
- 37:10who's going to mention that theyíre actually ended up
- 37:13getting healed by Jesus? Can any of you guess which
- 37:16gospel writer, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John would talk about
- 37:19the healing of milk has ear. If you guessed, Luke The
- 37:23Physician you're right. It's only in Luke's gospel,
- 37:26where the ear gets healed, and it's only in John's gospel here
- 37:30where we get his name again, we talked about this in previous
- 37:33episodes. I think it's significant that we
- 37:37know this man's name. It's not just a soldier or a
- 37:41random guy in this band of men. It's and his name was malchus.
- 37:48To me implies that when John's writing his gospel whenever that
- 37:53is, John knows exactly who it is and he gives us his name and
- 37:58none of the other gospel, writers do so.
- 38:01John and his audience seemed to know the name alkis.
- 38:06I'll tell you what I'm holding out.
- 38:07Hope for I'm holding out hope that Jesus healed.
- 38:12More than Mel kisses here that night.
- 38:15I'm holding out hope that when Jesus touched that ear and and
- 38:22and put it back on his head that he felt something deep in his
- 38:25heart that this becomes a converting turning fully turning
- 38:30point for milkis. Can you imagine this moment
- 38:36though? You've got a whole band of men
- 38:38armed and they're backwards on the ground, and Peter pulls, the
- 38:42sword and cuts. One of your, your comrades ears
- 38:46off. What would you expect from any
- 38:48one of that group of men that are armed to do, you would
- 38:51expect the next verse to say, and they all ganged up on Peter
- 38:55and killed him for attacking their there, buddy in arms,
- 38:59their brother, there. Do any of you find it?
- 39:03Interesting that there's only one person who comes to Mal
- 39:07kisses defense that night and guess how many only one And it's
- 39:12none of his quote. Unquote friends were comrades.
- 39:16It just so happens to be the person that milk has came to
- 39:20arrest and to haul off to be judged and condemned.
- 39:25It's Jesus who steps forward and stops Peter.
- 39:30And he says, put up thy sword into the sheath the cup which my
- 39:35father hath. Given me shall I not drink it?
- 39:39And he submits. And so now what happens is the
- 39:45soldiers, eventually get up the courage, apparently, to arrest
- 39:50him and the apostles all flee, they abandon him.
- 39:58And it says verse 3, that they led him away to Anise first for.
- 40:04He was father-in-law to Caiaphas, which was the high
- 40:06priest that same year. So he's Confer Stannis.
- 40:10The father-in-law of the actual high priest that year Caiaphas
- 40:14and while the apostles have scattered and run away in fear,
- 40:19which Jesus told them what happened, it says, verse 15,
- 40:23Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple that
- 40:27disciple was known under the high priest and went in with
- 40:30Jesus into the Palace of the high priest.
- 40:32Implication is that this is John the Beloved, the author of this
- 40:37book that he's known that he gets in.
- 40:39Somehow, I don't know for sure but he's now going to be telling
- 40:43the story from the inside and Peter is standing at the door
- 40:48without and then went out that other disciple, which was known
- 40:53to the high priest and spake unto her, that kept the door and
- 40:55brought in Peter. So, Peter is now brought in to
- 40:59this inner Court of Caiaphas is Palace where Jesus is being
- 41:04tried. Verse 17, then saith the damsel
- 41:09that kept the door unto Peter art.
- 41:12Not thou. Also one of this man's disciple,
- 41:15the disciples and he saith. I am not.
- 41:20So that point in your mind you would think okay, strike one.
- 41:24Jesus told me I was going to deny knowing him three times
- 41:28before the cock crows. Remember we did in just two
- 41:31prior lesson that the circle of learning is closed with.
- 41:36Feedback and reflection Peters receive feedback in advance but
- 41:41apparently he hasn't reflected and so he's a to keep repeating
- 41:44this mistake until he reflects enough and realizes.
- 41:48I need to make a change and be fully converted fully turned to
- 41:51the Lord. Yeah.
- 41:52So this is this is a difficult passage years ago at BYU
- 41:58president. Spencer W.
- 42:00Kimball gave a talk called Peter.
- 42:01My brother a great talk where he had Recently, some articles
- 42:08where people were were making fun of Peter for this experience
- 42:13and and dragging his name through the mud.
- 42:16And here's President, Kimball standing up for this chief
- 42:19Apostle saying and in a very similar position.
- 42:23Peter eventually had all the keys and President Kimball is
- 42:26now standing in Peters position as the chief Apostle so he has
- 42:31an affinity towards this man. Absolutely.
- 42:33He's basically saying don't point fingers Hers of scorn at
- 42:37Peter, my brother. He talked about the significance
- 42:40of Peters role in the premortal councils and at the creation and
- 42:44his role as the chief Apostle, through three years and then, if
- 42:48there was any wrongdoing here, Jesus completely forgiving him
- 42:52and he is the chief Apostle up until his death at the hands of
- 42:57Nero. So we're not, we're not pointing
- 43:03fingers of scorn or accusation of Peter, we're trying to learn
- 43:08principles that are applicable in our life from Peter story
- 43:13here, look at Verse 18 and the servants.
- 43:15In the officer stood there who had made a fire of coals.
- 43:20For, it was cold. That's like what late March
- 43:24early, April late, March early, April and it was in the middle
- 43:26of the night and it don't when those dues come down and it can
- 43:30get very chilly and We can't, we can't picture all of the agonies
- 43:39that Jesus endured for us. But have you ever thought about
- 43:43the fact that we do know, a couple of details?
- 43:46It was a cold night and when Jesus was out in the garden,
- 43:51bleeding from every pore, he's it's cold to add to all of the
- 43:58infinite agonies and all of the Eternal prices that are being
- 44:01paid. There's also that physical
- 44:05element that Jesus is enduring for us.
- 44:10It's such a small detail, it was cold, but for me, it becomes one
- 44:17of these significant additions to the store because I can at
- 44:20least wrap my head around that part.
- 44:23I can at least understand him. And during that part of the
- 44:26bitter cup for us, even though it's infinitesimally small
- 44:30compared to all of the agonies that he's enduring.
- 44:33And so, here's Peter warming himself standing with some and
- 44:37then verse 19, the high priest and ask Jesus of his disciples.
- 44:40Pools and of his Doctrine and Jesus answered him, and said I
- 44:44speak openly to the world I ever taught in the synagogue and in
- 44:49the temple, whither, the Jews always Resort.
- 44:51And in secret have, I said nothing.
- 44:54So in verse 21 he says why ask us thou me ask them which heard
- 44:59me what I have said unto them behold, they know what I said
- 45:04and when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by
- 45:06struck Jesus, with the palm of his hand Saying answers Now, the
- 45:11high priest. So, oh, the irony is thick.
- 45:15Jesus is the high priest of all high priests and he just got
- 45:19struck on the face by this servant of the high priest that
- 45:25face that minutes ago, half hour ago was on the ground in
- 45:33Gethsemane suffering, intense Agony.
- 45:37And now Jesus says, if I have I've spoken evil bear witness of
- 45:42the evil, but if well Weiss mightest thou me.
- 45:47Now Anna said sent him bound unto Caiaphas, the high priest,
- 45:51and Simon Peter stood and warmed himself.
- 45:54And they said, therefore unto him art.
- 45:55Not thou. Also, one of his disciples he
- 45:58denied it and said, I am not. There's number two, More
- 46:04pressure and one of the Servants of the high priest, being his
- 46:08Kinsmen, whose ear Peter cut off says, did not.
- 46:11I see the in the garden with him and Peter, then denied again and
- 46:16immediately, the cock crew. I love something that I learned
- 46:21many, many years ago from Michael Wilcox when he was
- 46:23teaching this section. He said if if you're Peter and
- 46:28you want to make sure you're not going to be tempted to deny
- 46:33knowing Jesus. You probably want to avoid
- 46:36caiaphas's Palace that night rather than going to the very
- 46:41place where it's most likely that you're going to be tempted
- 46:45to deny him again. We're not accusing Peter.
- 46:48We're trying to take this story from Peters context and figure
- 46:51out what lessons, Peter might be able to teach us today if he
- 46:55were standing here today. I think it's possible that Peter
- 46:59might say to you and me, don't go to a place where, you know,
- 47:05you have a propensity or a weakness to to perhaps give in
- 47:11to that weakness. Avoid that place go somewhere
- 47:16else. Don't think that we're stronger
- 47:20than than the Temptations in certain settings.
- 47:25And isn't it interesting that the animal that Jesus used
- 47:28again? Not applying to Peter?
- 47:31But to Tyler in this context, the animal, as we apply, this
- 47:35story is the rooster. The caulk was going to Crow
- 47:41immediately, the cock crew. Isn't that interesting?
- 47:46How Nature has an alarm clock a wake-up call if you will?
- 47:53It's the roosters Grow and isn't it?
- 47:55Interesting, how often I go into situations thinking I got this,
- 48:02I'm going to be strong and I go in kind of cocky if you will and
- 48:09then in the moment of Temptation, sometimes turns out
- 48:13I recognize that I'm chicken and I give in and I fall I love the
- 48:20fact that for the rest of Peters life, he's not holding himself
- 48:25Hostage to these three denials. But every morning moving
- 48:30forward, the Peter wakes up. And here's a cock crowing.
- 48:35It's once again, a reminder a wake-up call for him.
- 48:40That when he was fully converted, he would strengthen
- 48:42his Brethren. And that's what we see this to
- 48:44me is not a, let's make fun of Peter.
- 48:46For a moment of denial, this is a moment of glorying in the fact
- 48:52that Jesus is willing to work with us through moments of
- 48:57weakness. And give us those wake-up calls
- 49:00and the help us be strong and faithful and more powerful than
- 49:04ever before. I love this story and this
- 49:07perspective of Caiaphas is powerless and to acknowledge the
- 49:11fact that I know certain places certain things I can't trust
- 49:15myself so it's best. I just stay away from those
- 49:19caiaphas's Palace in my life. When they move on and they lead
- 49:24in verse 28, then LED they Jesus from Caiaphas under the Hall of
- 49:28judgment and it was early and they themselves went not into
- 49:32the Judgment Hall, lest they should be defiled, but they that
- 49:36they might eat the Passover. And isn't it ironic that these
- 49:39leaders of the Jews are unwilling to go into that
- 49:41praetorium into that judgment seat area, because that would
- 49:46defile them for / taking of the Passover that night, Without
- 49:52acknowledging, the fact that they're turning, they've
- 49:54condemned and are turning over the Lamb of God.
- 49:57The Passover Lamb of all Passover, Lambs for judgment and
- 50:03to be, to be crucified, we will cover more of these experiences
- 50:10in the next episode. When we give you Matthew, Mark,
- 50:13and Luke perspective of the trial experience.
- 50:17But let's pick up John's here. So pilate went out unto them and
- 50:21he said, what accusation bring you against this man?
- 50:24And they answered and said unto him.
- 50:25If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up
- 50:28unto thee. It's the ultimate argument of
- 50:31look, don't worry it. Trust us if he weren't guilty,
- 50:35we wouldn't have woken you up early in the morning and brought
- 50:37him to you. It's you've just got to trust
- 50:40us. He's a bad guy.
- 50:42It's an interesting word here that the word charge or
- 50:45accusation comes to the Greek word.
- 50:49Korea and you might hear the word category and the word Agora
- 50:55in Greek means public space. And Katha means to go down you
- 50:59would go into the public place. The Agora you would go down Kata
- 51:03Agora into the public pace place to make Claim about somebody.
- 51:08And so they're trying to categorize Jesus or cues him,
- 51:12put him in a box of being a malefactor somebody who does
- 51:17evil and even We like to pile criticism on pilot, he wasn't
- 51:23the most moral of men. He does seem to try to do a
- 51:27little bit of figuring out, whether there's a reason to be
- 51:31listening to the Jews or not. Yeah, so look at verse 31.
- 51:35It says then said pilate unto them.
- 51:36Take heed him and judge him, according to your law, the Jews,
- 51:40therefore said unto him. It is not lawful for us to put
- 51:43any man to death. Well, that's not going to going
- 51:46to stop them later on. Right with Steven.
- 51:49And And other Apostles down the road because the way they put
- 51:55people to death by stoning, look at verse 32.
- 51:59That's the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake
- 52:02signifying, what death? He should die.
- 52:05He told his Apostles on at least three occasions in the synoptic
- 52:08gospels. That when they go to Jerusalem,
- 52:12he will be turned over to the, the Romans and be lifted up and,
- 52:15and slain by crucifixion. And so pilate entered into the
- 52:21Judgment Hall this praetorium again and he called Jesus and
- 52:25said unto him, art, thou the king of the Jews.
- 52:29And Jesus answered him sayest thou this thing of thyself or
- 52:33did others tell it of thee of me and pilate answered Mi a Jew
- 52:39Dino nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto
- 52:42me. What hast thou done?
- 52:44What what did you do wrong? Why are you here?
- 52:46Jesus help me understand. And this powerful response.
- 52:50I love verse 36 and 37. These are some of the most
- 52:54powerful words in all of scripture at this critical
- 52:58moment of judgment when Jesus has full power to stop all of
- 53:02this. This abuse from proceeding.
- 53:05He doesn't verse 36. Jesus answered.
- 53:10My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this
- 53:14world, then would my servants fight that?
- 53:16I should not be delivered to the Jews.
- 53:18But now is my kingdom not from hence pilot is not going to
- 53:24understand this, he's so confused.
- 53:26He says he says unto Jesus art. Thou.
- 53:28A king then. If you have a kingdom that means
- 53:31you must be a king, right? And Jesus answered thou, sayest
- 53:36that I am a king. To this end was I born and for
- 53:41this cause came I into the world that I should bear witness unto
- 53:44the truth, every one that is of the truth.
- 53:47Heareth my voice that is so profound it.
- 53:53If you bear witness unto the truth you're going to hear my
- 53:57voice but then this question from Pilot that he asks and just
- 54:02lets it hang in the air without a response.
- 54:07What is truth? That is probably one of the most
- 54:12profound questions ever asked in the history of the world,
- 54:15especially considering that moment in the audience of that
- 54:17question. Jesus standing there condemned
- 54:20by his own people's Chief priest.
- 54:23Turned. Over to the Gentile governor of
- 54:26the land. What is truth.
- 54:31And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews and
- 54:34saith unto them. I find no fault in him and the
- 54:38King James translators out of the words at all.
- 54:42So now comes the second rejection in John's account, but
- 54:46you have a custom that I should release unto you.
- 54:48One at the Passover will be there for that.
- 54:51I release unto you, the king of the Jews and they cried all
- 54:54again saying, not this man, but Barabbas now Barabbas was a
- 54:59robber. We will tell you.
- 55:00You his story in Greater detail next week, in Matthew's account
- 55:06of this story because you get a lot more detail from Matthew.
- 55:10There are a couple of interesting things here.
- 55:12You get the word of where in 38 pilot says, I find no fault in
- 55:17him. The underlying Greek word is, I
- 55:19don't see the guilt. I don't see the cause for why
- 55:22you guys should be angry with him.
- 55:25And then we have this word of release.
- 55:28And pilate is like, who share our beliefs onto you.
- 55:31The underlying Greek word there, which is a peluso is actually
- 55:36used when Jesus announces his ministry and his mission in the
- 55:42synagogue in Nazareth. He uses the same word that his
- 55:46purpose is to loose, those who are bound.
- 55:51And here's the one who is spending his life?
- 55:53A loosing people who are bound is willing to be Bound and
- 55:59delivered to death. Now we go to finish this, this
- 56:05chapter of John 18 today, I want to finish with first Nephi
- 56:11chapter 19. Actually, the words here in the
- 56:15Book of Mormon verse 9 and the world, because of their
- 56:19iniquity, shall judge him to be a thing of naught.
- 56:25Worthless that the world judges him as dross as cast him out.
- 56:32Wherefore, they Scourge him, and he suffereth it, and they Smite
- 56:35him and he suffers it. Yeah, they spit upon him, and he
- 56:37suffereth it because of his loving kindness and his
- 56:41long-suffering towards the children of men.
- 56:44And we'll talk a lot more about this next week as well, but at
- 56:47any stage along this process Jesus could have stopped it but
- 56:52he didn't, he suffereth it. He allowed it to happen, which
- 56:57meant suffering pain and anguish in agony for him.
- 57:01What a great example for us to follow because we're not
- 57:05promised to pain-free life in our own sphere and, and domain
- 57:10of mortality and what a beautiful example to move
- 57:15forward on that Covenant path in that connection was Christ and
- 57:19suffer any, and all persecution that may come upon us because We
- 57:25have our eyes firmly set on, he who taught us, how to endure
- 57:30perfectly in infinite proportions so that we can
- 57:34endure in are infinitesimally small proportions in comparison
- 57:39to him and we leaves out with you in the name of Jesus Christ.
- 57:43Amen. Know that you're loved and
- 57:47spread light and goodness.
