- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 16th of
- 0:16December and it's great to have your company.
- 0:18And I had someone say to me not long ago, how many people
- 0:22actually listen on the day that it's intended.
- 0:25Probably a bit under half of us listen on the day and the rest
- 0:28catch up whenever it works for us.
- 0:29So whatever day it is, it's great to have your company.
- 0:32Thank you for tapping on play. We are going to continue working
- 0:37our way through these visions that God gives to Daniel and
- 0:41today's vision has a whole lot of talk of 70 years and 70 * 7
- 0:46weeks and it all feels a little bit much.
- 0:49What are these numbers referring to?
- 0:51Well, if you cast your mind back to when God was giving His
- 0:55people the rules about how they would go about living in their
- 0:59new land, He spoke about the 7th year, the year of Jubilee,
- 1:02right? Where the land rests and the
- 1:05slaves are freed and debt is forgiven.
- 1:08So this concept of seven is, is whole, this whole number of
- 1:11seven and 10 is also a whole number.
- 1:14So when you cross this whole number of seven and this whole
- 1:17number of 10, you get the very whole number of 70.
- 1:22And so when people talk about 70 years or 70 * 7 weeks, this
- 1:28really is a complete time of rest or a complete time of
- 1:31repentance or a complete time of restoration for God's people.
- 1:36So when you hear about these amounts of time, this is a
- 1:39perfect time of rest, a perfect time of change and
- 1:42transformation that God's people have needed to go through in
- 1:46their exile in Babylon, far away from their promised land.
- 1:51So, friends, let us dive in and read all about Daniel's prayer
- 1:55and Gabriel's answer as we read Daniel Chapter 9.
- 2:10It was the first year of the reign of Darius the Mede, the
- 2:14son of Ahazuerus, who became king of the Babylonians during
- 2:19the first year of his reign. I, Daniel, learned from reading
- 2:22the word of the Lord as revealed to Jeremiah the prophet, that
- 2:26Jerusalem must lie desolate for 70 years.
- 2:30So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and
- 2:34fasting. I also wore rough burlap and
- 2:37sprinkled myself with ashes. I prayed to the Lord my God and
- 2:41confessed. Oh Lord, you are a great and
- 2:46awesome God. You always fulfil your covenant
- 2:49and keep your promises of unfailing love to those who love
- 2:53you and obey your commands. But we have sinned and done
- 2:57wrong. We have rebelled against You and
- 2:59scorned Your commands and regulations.
- 3:02We have refused to listen to Your servants, the prophets who
- 3:06spoke on Your authority, to our kings and Princess and
- 3:09ancestors, and to all the people of the land.
- 3:13Lord, you are in the right, but as you see, our faces are
- 3:17covered with shame. This is true of all of us,
- 3:21including the people of Judah and Jerusalem and all Israel
- 3:25scattered near and far wherever You have driven us.
- 3:29Because of our disloyalty to You, O Lord, we and our kings,
- 3:35Princess and ancestors are covered with shame because we
- 3:38have sinned against You. But the Lord our God is merciful
- 3:42and forgiving. Even though we have rebelled
- 3:45against Him, we have not obeyed the Lord our God, for we have
- 3:49not followed the instructions He gave us through His servants,
- 3:53the prophets. All Israel has disobeyed Your
- 3:56instruction and turned away, refusing to listen to Your
- 4:00voice. So now the solemn curses and
- 4:04judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have
- 4:08been poured down on us because of our sin.
- 4:12You have kept Your Word and done to us and our rulers exactly as
- 4:16You warned. Never has there been such a
- 4:19disaster as happened in Jerusalem.
- 4:23Every curse written against us in the Law of Moses has come
- 4:27true, yet we have refused to seek mercy from the Lord our God
- 4:31by turning from our sins and recognising His truth.
- 4:35Therefore the Lord has brought upon us the disaster he
- 4:38prepared. The Lord our God was right to do
- 4:42all these things, for we did not obey Him.
- 4:46O Lord our God, you brought lasting honour to Your name by
- 4:50rescuing your people from Egypt in a great display of power.
- 4:55But we have sinned and a full of wickedness in view of all your
- 5:00faithful mercies. Lord, please turn your furious
- 5:04anger away from your city, Jerusalem, your holy mountain.
- 5:09All the neighbouring nations mock Jerusalem and your people
- 5:13because of our sins and the sins of our ancestors.
- 5:17O our God, hear your servant's prayer.
- 5:20Listen as I plead for your own sake.
- 5:24Lord, smile again on your desolate sanctuary.
- 5:28O my God, lean down and listen to me.
- 5:31Open your eyes and seer our despair.
- 5:35See how your city, the city that bears your name, lies in ruins.
- 5:41We make this plea not because we deserve help, but because of
- 5:46your mercy, O Lord, here, O Lord, forgive.
- 5:53O Lord, listen and act for your own sake.
- 5:57Do not delay, Oh my God, for your people and your city bear
- 6:03your name. I went on praying and confessing
- 6:09my sin and the sin of my people, pleading with the Lord my God
- 6:12for Jerusalem, his holy mountain.
- 6:15As I was praying, Gabriel, who I've seen in the earlier vision,
- 6:19came swiftly to me at the time of the evening sacrifice.
- 6:24He explained to me, Daniel, I have come here to give you
- 6:28insight and understanding. The moment you began praying, a
- 6:33command was given, and now I'm here to tell you what it is for.
- 6:38You are very precious to God. Listen carefully so that you can
- 6:43understand the meaning of your vision.
- 6:45A period of 70 sets of seven has been decreed for your people and
- 6:51your holy city to finish their rebellion, to put an end to
- 6:54their sin, to atone for their guilt, to bring in everlasting
- 6:59righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision and to anoint
- 7:03the Most Holy Place. Now listen and understand. 70
- 7:09sets of 7 + 62 sets of seven will pass from the time the
- 7:14command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler, the
- 7:19Anointed One, comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with
- 7:24streets and strong defences, despite the perilous times.
- 7:29After this period of 62 sets of seven, the Anointed One will be
- 7:34killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a
- 7:38ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the
- 7:42Temple. The end will come with a flood
- 7:45and a war, and its miseries are decreed from that time to the
- 7:49very end. The ruler will make a treaty
- 7:53with the people for a period of one set of seven, but after half
- 7:57this time he will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings.
- 8:02And as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he will set up a
- 8:06sacrilegious object that causes desecration until the fate
- 8:12decreed for this defiler is finally poured out on him.
- 8:27Oh Lord, what a beautiful image this is.
- 8:30Yes, beautiful of your servant Daniel, knees bent in prayer,
- 8:36just pleading with you, seeing your just hand through the whole
- 8:42history of his people through that terrible time of exile, and
- 8:49then coming to you with the deepest desire of his heart for
- 8:53his people to be restored back to their homeland.
- 8:58And then, Lord, we hear this wonderful response from the
- 9:01other side of the curtain that we so seldom get to see.
- 9:05And we see that you, the moment Daniel begins to pray, you know
- 9:09what his prayer will be. And you said about things to
- 9:12bring about the end of that time, and you set things in
- 9:15motion to answer His prayer. Our Lord continue to draw us
- 9:21into prayer to you. And even when it feels like
- 9:24nothing's happening, and when our prayer just lands empty,
- 9:28Lord, give us faith to know that our prayers go to you and that
- 9:31you in your perfect timing, respond before the words have
- 9:35even left our lips. You know what that will be.
- 9:38And you respond, Oh, you're a good God.
- 9:42You are a great God and you are our God, and so we come before
- 9:49you in prayer today and every day just laying down our lives
- 9:53at the foot of your throne. For you are holy and wonderful
- 9:58and loving. And thank you for showing us
- 10:00your love in Jesus, in whose name we pray all of these
- 10:04things. Amen.
