- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. We got so much basketball to talk about.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We're going to get to the Kevin Durant trade in
- 0:25Speaker 1: just a little bit, but I don't think there's any
- 0:28Speaker 1: other place for us to start than with your 2025
- 0:31Speaker 1: NBA championship. Oklahoma City Thunder. Well, actually, there is a
- 0:38Speaker 1: place to start, but it connects to the Thunder right fast.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Send a birthday shout out to the biggest Oklahoma City
- 0:45Speaker 1: Thunder fan that I know, my mama, right? So the
- 0:49Speaker 1: night before her birthday, she gets the Thunder with a victory.
- 0:52Speaker 1: And now on her favorite podcast, she gets a birthday
- 0:56Speaker 1: shout out. I see you, darling. I see you. You
- 0:59Speaker 1: got this. And they went and they made it happen.
- 1:02Speaker 1: And I'm going to tell you, I wasn't really sure
- 1:05Speaker 1: that they were going to get that at any particular point.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Indiana raced out. Obviously, Halliburton got hurt. We'll talk about
- 1:13Speaker 1: that a little bit more later. But the Pacers being
- 1:16Speaker 1: as relentless as they were, you couldn't be sure no
- 1:20Speaker 1: matter what happened that the Thunder were going to get this.
- 1:23Speaker 1: On top of the fact that, like, it's that season
- 1:28Speaker 1: where things, like, You know, during the winter, you just
- 1:33Speaker 1: have it where, you know what I'm saying, somebody gets
- 1:37Speaker 1: a little cold or the flu or whatever, and it
- 1:39Speaker 1: kind of bounces its way around the locker room, and
- 1:41Speaker 1: you just got to hope your team can survive it,
- 1:44Speaker 1: even though a couple people have been afflicted. Like, of course,
- 1:47Speaker 1: the worst of that was in COVID-19 when they was
- 1:50Speaker 1: out there picking up dudes in front of the Home
- 1:51Speaker 1: Depot in order to fill out the roster because they
- 1:54Speaker 1: wouldn't pass in the test. You dig what I'm saying?
- 1:57Speaker 1: The Thunder... at points during that game went through something else.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And luckily for them, it was a mild situation that
- 2:06Speaker 1: was bounced around. However, um a cute situation of lemon
- 2:11Speaker 1: booty was moving through the squad right like you could
- 2:14Speaker 1: you could just tell like if somebody had like the
- 2:16Speaker 1: blue light or the infrared or like one of the
- 2:19Speaker 1: 4k videos that they'd be putting on the internet to
- 2:21Speaker 1: show you how things work you'd have just seen it
- 2:24Speaker 1: it'd been a bunch of lemon peel going around right
- 2:27Speaker 1: and then you just see booties like it's all tight
- 2:30Speaker 1: You can see it. The MVP in the first half,
- 2:33Speaker 1: that man booty was looking drummy. You know what I'm saying?
- 2:36Speaker 1: Like it was tough for him. That thing contracted on
- 2:40Speaker 1: your man. You saw it with other cats on the team, man. Look,
- 2:44Speaker 1: the magnitude of trying to close out a championship is crazy.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Adding to the fact that the Thunder were the team
- 2:51Speaker 1: that already had all the pressure. And look, this is
- 2:54Speaker 1: something that I've talked about before. And I want to
- 2:56Speaker 1: make sure that I get this exactly right. because it's
- 2:59Speaker 1: very easy to mess up on these sorts of things,
- 3:03Speaker 1: but it's the real. Guys, this is only the second
- 3:08Speaker 1: year that they made the playoffs. You've seen the statistic
- 3:14Speaker 1: that this is the second youngest team ever to make
- 3:16Speaker 1: the finals, the other being the Portland Trailblazers in 1977,
- 3:21Speaker 1: who also won with Bill Walton on that squad. But
- 3:27Speaker 1: You got to normally do some things, overcome some things
- 3:31Speaker 1: to get to where you are going. And yeah, maybe
- 3:33Speaker 1: you could count losing in the second round last year
- 3:36Speaker 1: to Dallas as a thing that was overcome. But no, no, no, no.
- 3:40Speaker 1: These guys got to the top fast. I don't care
- 3:42Speaker 1: if this is the era of parody or anything else.
- 3:45Speaker 1: They got to where they were going. And then once
- 3:47Speaker 1: they were there, every now and then they look young.
- 3:50Speaker 1: They look young when they didn't put it away in
- 3:52Speaker 1: game six, which looks like something they were going to
- 3:54Speaker 1: pay for.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:55Speaker 1: But they didn't. They got here. They held this together.
- 3:59Speaker 1: They have a real live, legitimate superstar. And as I
- 4:04Speaker 1: struggled with the idea of whether or not he was
- 4:06Speaker 1: the superstar and all that stuff.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:08Speaker 1: The guy that I actually think is interesting, perhaps as
- 4:11Speaker 1: a comp to Shay in part because they physically look
- 4:14Speaker 1: so different. OK, and I'm just talking about on offense.
- 4:20Speaker 1: The guy I think about is Kawhi Leonard. And the
- 4:23Speaker 1: reason I think about him in the context of Kawhi
- 4:25Speaker 1: Leonard is they're both playing the same game. I'm just
- 4:28Speaker 1: trying to get to this spot. And then when I
- 4:30Speaker 1: get to this spot, it's cash for me.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Kawhi gets you over there to that right wing to
- 4:37Speaker 1: get that jump shot. It's cash. Shea, not exactly the
- 4:40Speaker 1: same spot, but he's trying to get you to the elbow.
- 4:44Speaker 1: And then once he gets to the elbow, he's got
- 4:46Speaker 1: that shot. Now, of course, the thing with Kawhi is
- 4:48Speaker 1: he gets there because he's strong like bull. It's not
- 4:51Speaker 1: exactly the same thing that's going on over there with
- 4:54Speaker 1: Shea Gildas Alexander. But he can get to his spot.
- 4:58Speaker 1: He can get those shots. He had– I looked up
- 5:01Speaker 1: at one point, Ryan, and they had the graphic and
- 5:03Speaker 1: said it was in the third quarter and he had
- 5:05Speaker 1: 22 and 10. And I was like, wow, that was
- 5:07Speaker 1: a quiet 10, 10 being assists. I was like, that
- 5:10Speaker 1: was a quiet 10.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's a very bizarre performance because you
- 5:16Speaker 4: never felt that he was dominating the game. But at
- 5:19Speaker 4: the same time, like he– The stats were there, and
- 5:22Speaker 4: he was clearly the best player on the floor.
- 5:24Speaker 1: You looked up and you saw those stats, and in
- 5:26Speaker 1: the end, just so we're clear, it was 29 points
- 5:29Speaker 1: and 12 assists. 8 of 27 shooting, but he got
- 5:32Speaker 1: 12 foul shots, right? When guys put up the quiet 29,
- 5:38Speaker 1: we only call it a quiet 29 when you win.
- 5:44Speaker 1: When we lose, we call them empty calories. Like, did
- 5:48Speaker 1: it really impact the game? Well, clearly on some level,
- 5:51Speaker 1: it did. My man Chet came through, holding it down
- 5:54Speaker 1: for the skinny folk. I've been seeing all y'all out there.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I don't see it with Chet, what they be talking
- 5:59Speaker 1: about with Chet. Chet put up 18 on eight field
- 6:02Speaker 1: goal attempts, and he had five blocks, right? When McConnell
- 6:07Speaker 1: Ladova was in there doing his thing, it seemed the
- 6:10Speaker 1: only thing that could do it to him was a
- 6:12Speaker 1: little white on white cry. You know what I'm saying?
- 6:15Speaker 1: Like apparently somebody, the brothers apparently didn't feel like they
- 6:18Speaker 1: was allowed to block the white man's shot. Chet was like, man,
- 6:21Speaker 1: fuck that shit, cuz. I got you. You know, he's
- 6:25Speaker 1: still white. He just talked like that. You can get
- 6:28Speaker 1: into the nuts and bolts of the basketball. I honestly
- 6:30Speaker 1: don't think that too many people came away from that
- 6:32Speaker 1: game for a number of reasons, thinking in that context
- 6:36Speaker 1: about this. But I want to throw something out here
- 6:40Speaker 1: that I... The story of how the Thunder got here
- 6:44Speaker 1: is so interesting to me. And going into the finals,
- 6:49Speaker 1: you saw a lot on the internet. I know Jamel
- 6:52Speaker 1: Hill wrote a column about this for The Atlantic. But...
- 6:56Speaker 1: People kept pointing back to Paul George as being the
- 7:01Speaker 1: guy who was the reason why all of this happened, right,
- 7:04Speaker 1: for both teams. Because Oklahoma City built their team in
- 7:08Speaker 1: large part because of the Paul George trade. And then
- 7:11Speaker 1: Indiana got here. They traded Paul George for, I want
- 7:15Speaker 1: to call it what, Victor Oladipo, Sabonis, and somebody else
- 7:19Speaker 1: I can't remember off the top of my head. And
- 7:21Speaker 1: then Sabonis got traded to Sacramento in the deal that
- 7:24Speaker 1: brought back Tyrese Halliburton. Okay, I see where people are
- 7:28Speaker 1: coming from here. But the person that people need to
- 7:30Speaker 1: talk about, going back to a dude I just brought
- 7:33Speaker 1: up earlier, the dude to talk about in this is Kawhi.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Because Kawhi, we should really call him Kawhi's associate. Y'all
- 7:44Speaker 1: ever seen that movie? Kawaza Sose. Now, again, it's my
- 7:49Speaker 1: mama's birthday, so I'm going to walk her through this,
- 7:51Speaker 1: not to ruin this for the rest of y'all. But mama,
- 7:54Speaker 1: it was this movie that was called The Usual Suspects,
- 7:56Speaker 1: and you can look this up. And it's about, it's
- 7:58Speaker 1: like a heist movie, you know, about a bunch of
- 8:01Speaker 1: criminals in a robbery or whatever. But the way the
- 8:03Speaker 1: movie is done is they have a guy and he's
- 8:06Speaker 1: sitting in an office and he's being interrogated by the
- 8:11Speaker 1: local police. And the dude is I don't know any
- 8:16Speaker 1: of the modern words that you allow to use, but, oh,
- 8:20Speaker 1: he appeared to be disabled, not just mentally, but a
- 8:24Speaker 1: little bit physically. Okay. And so they, they put the
- 8:28Speaker 1: screws on it because he's also a criminal because they
- 8:30Speaker 1: think he'll break or everything else. And as this is
- 8:32Speaker 1: going on, there's a parallel investigation and they figure out
- 8:35Speaker 1: that the real guy behind what was going on there
- 8:39Speaker 1: was this worldwide master criminal named Kaiser Sosa.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And so the whole thing about the movie is the
- 8:46Speaker 1: dude is sitting in the room getting interrogated. The feds
- 8:49Speaker 1: are trying to find Kaiser Sosa. The locals are trying
- 8:51Speaker 1: to figure it out because they all caught up on
- 8:53Speaker 1: this other dude. And in the end, it turns out
- 8:56Speaker 1: that the invalid. I think that's OK. Like it sounds
- 9:00Speaker 1: very antiquated, but nobody told me you can't say it. Anyway,
- 9:04Speaker 1: they found out the guy with all the problems himself
- 9:07Speaker 1: was actually Kaiser Sosa. And in the end, he started
- 9:10Speaker 1: walking straight instead of walking with the limp that he
- 9:12Speaker 1: had in the movie. And it was like, oh, man,
- 9:14Speaker 1: he's Kaiser Sosa.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Brian, you remember it wasn't that long ago that we
- 9:19Speaker 1: ain't even know if Kawhi could talk.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I feel like I still haven't heard
- 9:24Speaker 4: him talk that much.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. A lot of people made a lot
- 9:29Speaker 1: of presumptions about the way Kawhi Leonard gets down, right?
- 9:34Speaker 2: Correct.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Then he had this uncle that was coming in and
- 9:36Speaker 1: handling his affairs. And it turns out his uncle is
- 9:39Speaker 1: actually a very accomplished man. I know somebody that actually
- 9:41Speaker 1: worked with his uncle's wife. And I think he's not
- 9:44Speaker 1: an AAU uncle. Which is what I think that people,
- 9:47Speaker 1: people just heard, man, you got an uncle, right? And
- 9:49Speaker 1: they misunderstood what time it was. But anyway, it gave
- 9:52Speaker 1: the impression that Kawhi needed somebody to like speak for him.
- 9:56Speaker 1: You see what I mean? That was the impression that
- 9:58Speaker 1: we got about Kawhi. Instead, Kawhi's associate was out here
- 10:02Speaker 1: making moves, trying to find somebody else to come with
- 10:05Speaker 1: him to play with the Clippers. And as I recall
- 10:08Speaker 1: the story, and Ryan, I ran this by you and
- 10:11Speaker 1: you remember this the same way, right? So Kawhi Leonard
- 10:15Speaker 1: was trying to find somebody to come with him. And
- 10:18Speaker 1: the way he ultimately got Paul George to decide he
- 10:21Speaker 1: wanted to come is that he called Paul George. It
- 10:24Speaker 1: was like, yo, I want you to come down here.
- 10:25Speaker 1: And he's like, no, man, me and Russ got something
- 10:27Speaker 1: going in Oklahoma City. And he was like, I don't
- 10:31Speaker 1: know how to tell you this, but your boy, he
- 10:33Speaker 1: trying to get.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Out, too.
- 10:35Speaker 1: And Paul George is like, what? He's trying to get out.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Time to go.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Fine, then I'll come with you. Little did he know.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Kawhi had called Russell Westbrook and offered him the same pitch.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And that was what Kawhi was using to say that
- 10:51Speaker 1: Russ was talking about getting out of there. Kawhi brought
- 10:54Speaker 1: it up. His gimpy ass started walking straight. Right? Like,
- 11:00Speaker 1: that was an amazing level of game. But what it
- 11:02Speaker 1: did for the Thunder that was so important was the
- 11:07Speaker 1: Thunder got this gigantic haul with all these picks and,
- 11:11Speaker 1: very importantly, Shea Gildress Alexander. They got all of that
- 11:15Speaker 1: not because of the value of Paul George, but because
- 11:18Speaker 1: that was what the Clippers had to do to get
- 11:21Speaker 1: Kawhi and Paul George. Okay? The Clippers were in a
- 11:27Speaker 1: position as they have spent the better part of the
- 11:30Speaker 1: last decade and change trying to wash all the Donald
- 11:33Speaker 1: Sterling stink off of them. They didn't have an actual
- 11:36Speaker 1: real life superstar. Kawhi Leonard had demonstrated himself at that
- 11:39Speaker 1: point with two championships, two finals MVPs to be a
- 11:42Speaker 1: legitimate superstar. A guy with an argument at that point
- 11:44Speaker 1: for being the best player in the NBA. They got him.
- 11:47Speaker 1: And then if you get Paul George as the number two,
- 11:51Speaker 1: They made the trade. I thought it was a perfectly
- 11:53Speaker 1: appropriate trade to make. They gave up the world in
- 11:56Speaker 1: order to make that happen. The next step in this, though,
- 11:58Speaker 1: now is Russell Westbrook now definitely wants to be gone
- 12:02Speaker 1: because Paul George isn't there. Nothing acrimonious, because I think
- 12:05Speaker 1: deep down, Sam Presti is looking around like, all right,
- 12:07Speaker 1: I got to get him out of here, too. But
- 12:09Speaker 1: he's kind of the most beloved player in the franchise.
- 12:11Speaker 1: So how do I pull this right? OK, made the
- 12:14Speaker 1: trade for Chris Paul. And that is always such an
- 12:17Speaker 1: interesting trade to me because I would not be surprised
- 12:20Speaker 1: if one day they retire Chris Paul's jersey in Oklahoma
- 12:22Speaker 1: City because he is perhaps the man most responsible for
- 12:25Speaker 1: them having a team in the town because of how
- 12:28Speaker 1: well it went when the Hornets were there for their
- 12:31Speaker 1: Katrina sabbatical. And the way that Chris Paul, those first
- 12:34Speaker 1: two years in the league for him, the way that
- 12:36Speaker 1: he handled himself during that time helped them get that team.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Then they brought him back. The reason I bring him up, though,
- 12:42Speaker 1: in talking about this is This was not the process.
- 12:46Speaker 1: This was not what you see happening in Utah, for example.
- 12:50Speaker 1: This was not a tank in the ways that people
- 12:53Speaker 1: talk about a tank typically. They made the playoffs that
- 12:57Speaker 1: first year after they made those trades. That's the reason
- 13:00Speaker 1: why Chris Paul was there when Shea Gildas Alexander got
- 13:02Speaker 1: his MVP, because Chris Paul was Shea's OG, right, on
- 13:06Speaker 1: that squad. That's how that worked, okay? But at every turn,
- 13:13Speaker 1: you could look at what the Thunder were doing and
- 13:15Speaker 1: they were trying to win. This was not a full
- 13:18Speaker 1: on bottom out. And the way in large part that
- 13:21Speaker 1: you know that this was not a full on bottom out.
- 13:24Speaker 1: And hey, look, they went 22 and 50 that first
- 13:28Speaker 1: year after the bubble. OK, they were 24 and 58
- 13:30Speaker 1: the year after that. They were not good. But the
- 13:33Speaker 1: next year they went 40 and 42. The team that's
- 13:36Speaker 1: trying to tank is not a team that's going to
- 13:38Speaker 1: waste its time with a 500 season. They went to
- 13:42Speaker 1: the play in and they didn't get it. They went young.
- 13:47Speaker 1: which is not the same thing. The other reason for me,
- 13:51Speaker 1: this did not feel like a full on tank. Now, granted,
- 13:55Speaker 1: they changed the rules about how the lottery worked and
- 14:00Speaker 1: everything like this. But this team only has one super
- 14:07Speaker 1: duper high pick. And that's Chet Holmgren at pick two.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Nobody else on that squad is one of those. They
- 14:15Speaker 1: got this done with a the volume of having all
- 14:18Speaker 1: the picks that came from all the moves that they made.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 14:22Speaker 1: But they got this done by just having a great
- 14:25Speaker 1: eye for talent like that. They got here because they
- 14:29Speaker 1: have the best general manager in basketball. Like I felt
- 14:33Speaker 1: like that a long time. There was a point while
- 14:34Speaker 1: this was going where people were asking the question as
- 14:37Speaker 1: to why it was that he was not getting the
- 14:39Speaker 1: same hell for the tank. that say somebody like the
- 14:42Speaker 1: Sixers were, and I'm like, the Sixers were actively looking
- 14:45Speaker 1: for players to be terrible. Oklahoma City was truly looking
- 14:48Speaker 1: for players to help win, even if it didn't happen today.
- 14:51Speaker 1: For example, Ryan, Jalen Williams, that's the number 12 pick.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Same draft as Chet, but that's the number 12 pick
- 15:01Speaker 1: that they got there.
- 15:03Speaker 4: You look at the way they've built their team, it
- 15:05Speaker 4: feels very, very intentional. From Jalen Williams to Kaysan Wallace
- 15:09Speaker 4: to Brennan Caruso, They're going to throw waves and waves
- 15:12Speaker 4: of defenders at you. And I mean, that was their
- 15:17Speaker 4: clear identity from this entire season in this entire playoffs.
- 15:20Speaker 1: And don't forget about left outside Lou Dort.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:24Speaker 1: They, they, It's so funny. If you've ever watched football
- 15:30Speaker 1: players play basketball, it's so funny to watch him. Yes,
- 15:34Speaker 1: the jumper.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Got it.
- 15:35Speaker 1: It is the– And also the trajectory where it goes.
- 15:38Speaker 4: The moon ball shot he hit from 40 feet. yes
- 15:44Speaker 4: well yeah we'll take a defensive tackle yes.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Well also not pretending like he is anybody other than
- 15:49Speaker 1: who he is in terms of the way he plays
- 15:51Speaker 1: defense right like this this is what it is but
- 15:54Speaker 1: it's all these guys man and it's kind of cobbled
- 15:57Speaker 1: together when you run through and look at the names
- 16:00Speaker 1: like the question was did they have enough guys like
- 16:03Speaker 1: enough guys that could go get it for you apparently
- 16:06Speaker 1: they did I still think they can stand to get
- 16:09Speaker 1: one more. But when you had Jalen.
- 16:11Speaker 5: Williams get the 40 piece in game five, you were like, oh, okay,
- 16:16Speaker 5: this is what's happening. But the build on this and
- 16:19Speaker 5: to get these young guys and the recognition that, look,
- 16:21Speaker 5: we're not going to be able to get anybody in
- 16:23Speaker 5: free agency to really come here.
- 16:25Speaker 1: We're going to have to get young guys. They're going
- 16:27Speaker 1: to have to like each other and they're going to
- 16:29Speaker 1: have to really like basketball. And that's the way that
- 16:31Speaker 1: we're going to be able to make it here is
- 16:34Speaker 1: under those circumstances, right? We have to build a team
- 16:39Speaker 1: and build a franchise that guys want to play for.
- 16:43Speaker 1: The only thing the Thunder truly has to offer the
- 16:46Speaker 1: modern NBA player is competence. We will make this the
- 16:51Speaker 1: best team it can be. We will make you the
- 16:53Speaker 1: best player you can be. That is the only way
- 16:57Speaker 1: a franchise like that could truly function at a high level, right?
- 17:00Speaker 1: To be anywhere near where they are. And think about it.
- 17:04Speaker 1: They got Russell Westbrook to sign the second contract extension.
- 17:08Speaker 1: They got Paul George to sign an extension. If you've
- 17:11Speaker 1: ever listened to Carmelo talk about playing for the Thunder
- 17:14Speaker 1: on 7 p.m. in Brooklyn, the way he talks about
- 17:17Speaker 1: that franchise and how well run it is in the
- 17:19Speaker 1: program that they have for you. This is what you're
- 17:21Speaker 1: going to do. This is how you get to hear
- 17:22Speaker 1: there and there and everything else. Like he spoke of
- 17:25Speaker 1: that franchise already. with a certain sort of reference. You
- 17:28Speaker 1: go look at the way it is with those guys
- 17:30Speaker 1: and them hanging out. Because I'm going to be honest
- 17:32Speaker 1: with you, brother. My mother's from Oklahoma City. I got
- 17:34Speaker 1: kinfolk there. Shout out to my cousin, Weld. He sent
- 17:36Speaker 1: me a text about them winning that. He said Oklahoma. Right.
- 17:40Speaker 1: He said Oklahoma City is title tag. They happy over there.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Good for them.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Yep. That's what I'm saying. Although the irony of it
- 17:50Speaker 1: is the other title town is green Bay and Oklahoma
- 17:53Speaker 1: city might be Paris compared to green Bay. So, you know,
- 17:57Speaker 1: it all runs together, but they just had, I would
- 18:01Speaker 1: rather be rich and in the NBA and some other
- 18:03Speaker 1: places that that is me, but they got it, man.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Think about this. Shane Gilders, Alexander stuck with this for
- 18:09Speaker 1: six years. They made that trade for him six years ago.
- 18:14Speaker 1: They had to sell him at every point. This is
- 18:16Speaker 1: what we're going to do. So that at no point
- 18:18Speaker 1: does he say, hey, man, I'm trying to get out
- 18:19Speaker 1: of here. That didn't happen. Six years of him. And again,
- 18:25Speaker 1: while slowly adding players that I might necessarily have believed in. Like, hey, Shay,
- 18:30Speaker 1: just wanted to let you know, we got Isaiah Joe. Word?
- 18:35Speaker 2: Oh, oh.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Okay. Like, I don't know what I would have done.
- 18:38Speaker 4: We got a Wiggins.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Not that Wiggins.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Wiggins is coming. That would have been it.
- 18:41Speaker 1: We got Wiggins. Where?
- 18:43Speaker 4: Hell.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Well, you know. But, like, at this point, I look
- 18:48Speaker 1: at this roster, and I look at it up and down,
- 18:51Speaker 1: and I see a dude that played in a game
- 18:53Speaker 1: seven with a ducktail. And before he had a ducktail,
- 18:59Speaker 1: he had a shack. Because he's from Dallas.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I keep trying to tell y'all about Dallas. And a
- 19:07Speaker 1: lot of y'all think it's just because I'm from Houston.
- 19:10Speaker 1: It's not because I'm from Houston. It's because they wear
- 19:13Speaker 1: shags and ducktails in 2025. A dude with a ducktail
- 19:18Speaker 1: or a shag walked in and Shea Gilders did not say,
- 19:21Speaker 1: get me the hell out of here. Because I'm going
- 19:23Speaker 1: to tell you right now, if I'm in the spot
- 19:24Speaker 1: and the dude shows up with a ducktail, we're leaving.
- 19:28Speaker 1: That's how dedicated that man was to winning. He said, no, no, no,
- 19:31Speaker 1: we can keep this going. We can do this. And
- 19:35Speaker 1: they did. They're going to be good for a really, really,
- 19:40Speaker 1: really long time. Everybody young, man. Even the damn coach
- 19:45Speaker 1: is young. The coach is born in 1985. As much
- 19:47Speaker 1: as I've talked about, I believe that this league is
- 19:52Speaker 1: about a dynasty saga and the NBA has ruined the
- 19:54Speaker 1: potential for a dynasty. Sam Presti, who ironically, when the
- 19:58Speaker 1: 2011-2012 CBA came out, that was supposed to break up
- 20:03Speaker 1: the big market teams, actually broke up the Oklahoma City Thunder.
- 20:09Speaker 1: This guy... has apparently overcome. All the things that are
- 20:14Speaker 1: meant to tear down a team is good. They earned this.
- 20:18Speaker 1: They got it. I don't know how much I like
- 20:21Speaker 1: them as a team, and that's the best part. The
- 20:23Speaker 1: more people watch them, the more they will develop emotional
- 20:26Speaker 1: feelings about them.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Especially after they ruined everyone's sports movie moment for the Pacers.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Speaking of which... I do not know if I have
- 20:44Speaker 1: ever felt more about a team like you can never
- 20:51Speaker 1: count them out like I did about these Pacers. And
- 20:56Speaker 1: that's particularly interesting for a team where, I mean, Pascal
- 21:02Speaker 1: Siakam being your number two player is, I mean, that's
- 21:06Speaker 1: not a bad thing to be able to say. I mean,
- 21:08Speaker 1: I've already seen a team win a championship if Siakam
- 21:10Speaker 1: is the number two player. Whoever you want to call
- 21:12Speaker 1: their number three, that's where it's like, oh, okay, I guess.
- 21:19Speaker 1: But never at any point while they were down big
- 21:22Speaker 1: in the double digits in the third, down pretty big
- 21:25Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter, never thought they were out of it.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Down 12 with like four minutes left, never thought that
- 21:32Speaker 1: they were out of it. Never at any point did
- 21:34Speaker 1: I feel that way about them. And that was even
- 21:37Speaker 1: with the particular circumstances that they were under In game seven,
- 21:41Speaker 1: I just can't think of a team that I came
- 21:44Speaker 1: away from respecting more than I did that particular team
- 21:49Speaker 1: in that particular makeup, especially given that they brought it
- 21:53Speaker 1: like that after the Halliburton injury. Now, I had more
- 21:59Speaker 1: than a few people mentioned to me during the game
- 22:03Speaker 1: when they saw Halliburton hit the ground that, quote, I
- 22:08Speaker 1: called it, unquote. I did not call. I want to
- 22:11Speaker 1: be very clear about this. I did not predict this
- 22:14Speaker 1: would happen. I did not think this would happen. I
- 22:17Speaker 1: damn sure hope it wouldn't happen. The thing that I
- 22:20Speaker 1: said was maybe I'm a little scarred because after the
- 22:25Speaker 1: Kevin Durant play with calf strain, I associate the calf strain.
- 22:31Speaker 1: with being right like one train stop away from the
- 22:36Speaker 1: Achilles tear but I didn't know enough to know if
- 22:39Speaker 1: that were actually true I've seen enough Ryan. What is,
- 22:44Speaker 1: what is a point two is a trend and I'm
- 22:47Speaker 1: taking it way past tree.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Yeah. We, I saw a tweet that was like, we're
- 22:51Speaker 4: going to, I'm going to start mentally treating, uh, capturing
- 22:54Speaker 4: in the NBA, like concussions in the NFL.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. How many fingers am I holding up?
- 23:01Speaker 4: It's just so tough. Cause you don't, It's just the
- 23:06Speaker 4: image of Kevin Durant holding his leg is also fresh
- 23:08Speaker 4: in his mind. When you talk about people calling it,
- 23:10Speaker 4: people want to predict the worst-case scenario because they want
- 23:13Speaker 4: to be right, right?
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yes.
- 23:16Speaker 4: But it still didn't make it any easier to watch.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Well, especially because just like the Kevin Durant game, which was,
- 23:22Speaker 1: I believe, game five in the NBA Finals in 2019.
- 23:28Speaker 1: It was game four or game five. I can't remember which.
- 23:31Speaker 1: But he was on fire.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Yes.
- 23:34Speaker 1: It was game four. It was game four because the
- 23:36Speaker 1: game was in Toronto. He was on fire that game.
- 23:41Speaker 1: And then he just crumpled into a heap. But also
- 23:44Speaker 1: remember this about the Kevin Durant game. He missed time
- 23:48Speaker 1: in that postseason.
- 23:48Speaker 4: About a month. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Like, he missed a long time. Halliburton was trying to
- 23:53Speaker 1: play straight through this. Okay?
- 23:56Speaker 4: And was effective in game six.
- 23:58Speaker 1: He was, but that isn't the point, right?
- 24:00Speaker 5: Like.
- 24:01Speaker 1: We are not in a place, at least from what
- 24:04Speaker 1: I have seen, where the question is about the blame
- 24:08Speaker 1: game on this. I think the case was a little
- 24:12Speaker 1: bit different with Durant, especially since he was going to
- 24:15Speaker 1: be a free agent and we all felt pretty confident
- 24:17Speaker 1: he wasn't coming back to Golden State. It felt like
- 24:20Speaker 1: they were ringing the last drops out of the rag.
- 24:22Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Before they got done with
- 24:24Speaker 1: them and that that felt a little bit unseemly. Of course,
- 24:28Speaker 1: it would have been pretty cool to be able to
- 24:29Speaker 1: get some insights from Bob Myers, former general manager of
- 24:32Speaker 1: the Warriors, at the halftime show as he was there
- 24:35Speaker 1: and had a role in the Kevin Durant decision, given
- 24:38Speaker 1: what happened to Halliburton. Inexplicably, ESPN didn't give us anything
- 24:42Speaker 1: about that. Like. I can only assume that Bob Myers
- 24:45Speaker 1: didn't give us anything. This is like that time Drew
- 24:48Speaker 1: Brees ran away from the set when John Gruden called
- 24:53Speaker 1: DeMar Smith some variety of a big-lipped African-American. I know
- 24:57Speaker 1: that John Gruden said it didn't have anything to do
- 24:59Speaker 1: with him being African-American, but fuck out of here, cuz.
- 25:02Speaker 1: This one felt tragic. The Durant one felt like it
- 25:06Speaker 1: just had a lot more surrounding it. I don't know
- 25:09Speaker 1: if I had evolved in the way that I look
- 25:12Speaker 1: at things since that. And now I look at it
- 25:15Speaker 1: with Halliburton where I think I think this is it.
- 25:20Speaker 1: I think I'm a little less cynical about these things
- 25:22Speaker 1: than I used to be and that I am operating
- 25:26Speaker 1: in this case on an assumption that Halliburton made an
- 25:30Speaker 1: informed decision. and decided to, this is his chance to
- 25:35Speaker 1: win a championship, and he decided he was willing to
- 25:37Speaker 1: go for it. And I think that in the 20-something
- 25:40Speaker 1: years that I've been doing this job, I have a
- 25:43Speaker 1: better understanding of athletes and what they're willing to do
- 25:49Speaker 1: to get it. And I am willing to bet at
- 25:53Speaker 1: this point that if you ask Halliburton 20 years from
- 25:55Speaker 1: now whether he would have done that, he'll probably say yes.
- 25:59Speaker 1: And I could be wrong, but that is informing the
- 26:01Speaker 1: way I look at it. But it still was tragic.
- 26:04Speaker 1: And as soon as he's laid out on the ground
- 26:06Speaker 1: face first, I have not seen the details of the replay,
- 26:09Speaker 1: by the way, because I don't do that. My brother
- 26:11Speaker 1: saw it and was like, yep, there it is right there.
- 26:13Speaker 1: You can see it. We all knew exactly what it
- 26:15Speaker 1: was when he laid down. We knew what it was
- 26:17Speaker 1: when he started crying because an Achilles tear is not
- 26:20Speaker 1: one that takes a lot to diagnose. In fact, we
- 26:21Speaker 1: have not even gotten an official word as I say this.
- 26:24Speaker 1: His daddy told Lisa Salters it was an Achilles tear,
- 26:27Speaker 1: which I don't think was the most responsible thing for
- 26:29Speaker 1: anybody involved to do. But we're all pretty confident that
- 26:35Speaker 1: that is what happened.
- 26:36Speaker 4: They're testing for severity, not the injury.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and dude, This is another one, man. Three star
- 26:45Speaker 1: borderline superstar guys have torn ACLs in the last, excuse me,
- 26:50Speaker 1: Achilles in the last three months. Dame Lillard, Jason Tatum,
- 26:55Speaker 1: and now Tyrese Halliburton. Lillard is at an Achilles tear
- 27:00Speaker 1: age in the ways that we have thought of Achilles tears.
- 27:05Speaker 1: We talked about this with Tom Haberstroh, who had mentioned
- 27:08Speaker 1: this spate of Achilles tears that we had seen. But
- 27:12Speaker 1: the idea of seeing a 25 year old face first
- 27:16Speaker 1: on the ground with an Achilles tear. Don't forget this one. Ryan,
- 27:20Speaker 1: Luka Doncic was dealing with a calf strain this year
- 27:23Speaker 1: with the pushing to get him back out there. I
- 27:26Speaker 1: bet you Nico would have started doing press conferences.
- 27:31Speaker 4: You could have all of a sudden seen a long
- 27:33Speaker 4: media podcast tour if Luka got hurt.
- 27:35Speaker 1: If that would have happened.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Between defense winning championships and Luka turning his Achilles, we've
- 27:40Speaker 4: heard a lot more from Nico Harrison.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Nico would have put out the most heartfelt tweet. He'd
- 27:45Speaker 1: have sent that man flowers. He'd have done the whole nine,
- 27:48Speaker 1: but he'd have been like, I told y'all. But Is
- 27:54Speaker 1: this is this what the NBA is going to be?
- 27:58Speaker 1: With all these guys and all these miles. And I
- 28:00Speaker 1: was talking to a guy who worked in college basketball
- 28:03Speaker 1: after we had done the thing before about these Achilles tears.
- 28:07Speaker 1: And the point that he made was. He said the
- 28:10Speaker 1: issue isn't so much that guys play more basketball now
- 28:14Speaker 1: than they used to. He's like, the difference is they
- 28:16Speaker 1: play more basketball in gyms. than they used to, right?
- 28:19Speaker 1: Because if they weren't playing all these AAU games, they
- 28:22Speaker 1: would have been playing on the street or playing in
- 28:24Speaker 1: local runs because basketball players play basketball. That's what they do, right?
- 28:28Speaker 1: That's where it would have gone. Where he said he
- 28:31Speaker 1: thinks the mileage really comes from and where it truly
- 28:33Speaker 1: becomes a discussion is in all the time they spend
- 28:37Speaker 1: working with trainers and how hard it is. These guys
- 28:41Speaker 1: are used to not having off-seasons. Just a couple of
- 28:44Speaker 1: days ago, a good friend of mine came up here
- 28:46Speaker 1: because his son had a basketball game. His son is
- 28:50Speaker 1: a top 100 recruit. And the young homie... School year over,
- 28:56Speaker 1: like they still play, right? It's June. The school's still
- 29:00Speaker 1: playing school games. There's like the early summer. The schools
- 29:04Speaker 1: keep playing now, like April, May, like, you know, past
- 29:07Speaker 1: the regular season. Then you get into AAU season. The
- 29:10Speaker 1: last time I saw my man, he was here. It
- 29:12Speaker 1: was like late September, early October. They were already playing
- 29:16Speaker 1: basketball again. And so what the guy was telling me
- 29:19Speaker 1: is that the hardest thing for him was It's getting
- 29:22Speaker 1: the guys, okay, take a little break. Don't be in
- 29:24Speaker 1: the gym. All they do is go in the gym
- 29:26Speaker 1: because the brain is now so focused on get to
- 29:29Speaker 1: the NBA, get to the NBA. The understanding of the
- 29:32Speaker 1: level of competition around them is so strong. And it's like,
- 29:35Speaker 1: once you know these other cats are in the gym, well,
- 29:37Speaker 1: now I gotta be in the gym they putting in
- 29:39Speaker 1: these hours and they all and everybody's putting it on
- 29:41Speaker 1: instagram so you see it and you're and you're recognizing
- 29:44Speaker 1: at every moment this is how much you have to
- 29:46Speaker 1: play and i am not convinced that part is true
- 29:48Speaker 1: but this is how much that you have to do
- 29:50Speaker 1: and everything else and so these guys have an extraordinary
- 29:54Speaker 1: number of miles on.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Them and just you know the best way to uh
- 29:58Speaker 4: Keep the business of the season going is to extend
- 30:00Speaker 4: the season. If there's no off season, you can charge
- 30:04Speaker 4: for 52 weeks of training instead of 26 weeks.
- 30:05Speaker 6: That's right.
- 30:06Speaker 1: That's right. And so it goes and it goes and
- 30:08Speaker 1: it goes. And we just watch. Because Indiana, everything that
- 30:11Speaker 1: we were saying about why can't the Thunder keep this
- 30:14Speaker 1: going for a long time, it was the same feeling
- 30:16Speaker 1: about Indiana. Why can't Indiana– keep this going a long time?
- 30:21Speaker 1: And now the answer is because their best player just
- 30:22Speaker 1: tore his Achilles. Now, it is possible that they've come
- 30:26Speaker 1: a long way on these Achilles tears. I mean, Kevin
- 30:28Speaker 1: Durant tore his Achilles six years ago. Two years after
- 30:32Speaker 1: he tore his Achilles, he was playing well enough, maybe
- 30:36Speaker 1: some of the best basketball we'd ever seen Kevin Durant
- 30:38Speaker 1: play to lead a team to a championship if he
- 30:40Speaker 1: wore a shoe one size smaller.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Right.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Like we saw all of those things. But man, it
- 30:46Speaker 1: hurt to watch it, man, especially now. Like, you know,
- 30:48Speaker 1: I'm in an older age or whatever. Even though I'm
- 30:51Speaker 1: not looking at it from the standpoint of somebody to blame, man,
- 30:54Speaker 1: it hurt to watch. It was a difficult thing to
- 30:56Speaker 1: view and to see and to see that emotion and
- 30:59Speaker 1: see them carry him off the floor and everything else.
- 31:04Speaker 1: I'm going to say this one, too, and we'll throw
- 31:05Speaker 1: it out there. And I mean, we could be general.
- 31:08Speaker 1: I don't think they're the only people who did this.
- 31:11Speaker 1: But both Perk and Stephen A had a lot to
- 31:15Speaker 1: say about Halliburton on the if you can walk, you
- 31:18Speaker 1: have to play. I don't say those kinds of things
- 31:22Speaker 1: because I don't even want to do a show with
- 31:24Speaker 1: a headache. You know what I'm saying? I ain't the guy.
- 31:28Speaker 1: I'm not the one to do that. But I do
- 31:30Speaker 1: think that this is one of those moments that makes
- 31:33Speaker 1: us or requires us often to be a little bit
- 31:35Speaker 1: careful about what we say other people should do with
- 31:40Speaker 1: their injuries. If you can walk, you can play. Ryan,
- 31:44Speaker 1: that's not terribly different than the logic that sent people
- 31:47Speaker 1: out there with concussions.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, we talk a lot about it. You
- 31:54Speaker 4: mentioned that like his lack of regret, like all, all
- 31:59Speaker 4: athletes are in that position because they, they will always
- 32:02Speaker 4: make the decision to play through it.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Yes.
- 32:04Speaker 4: And when I think the similarity of it's hard about
- 32:07Speaker 4: concussions is when is it the right time for it?
- 32:10Speaker 4: the player or the organization to make that decision. That's
- 32:12Speaker 4: something we haven't figured out with calf strength yet.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Well, one thing about concussions and I've, I've said this
- 32:17Speaker 1: a while ago is that we treat that differently because
- 32:20Speaker 1: we treat the idea of like the dementia and everything else. Like, right. We,
- 32:24Speaker 1: we prioritize the head and the brain, which makes perfect sense.
- 32:27Speaker 1: I'm not saying that it's a bad idea. I'm just
- 32:29Speaker 1: saying the other stuff hurts too. And the other stuff
- 32:32Speaker 1: is why people take pain pills.
- 32:34Speaker 4: Right?
- 32:34Speaker 1: Like with football players. These are all injuries, right? They're
- 32:38Speaker 1: all bad. They're all miles that guys are going to
- 32:41Speaker 1: have to take later. And so... We look at playing
- 32:46Speaker 1: through those injuries differently than we look at playing through
- 32:48Speaker 1: head injuries. And I understand it. But we just watch
- 32:50Speaker 1: somebody endure one of the most severe injuries that you
- 32:53Speaker 1: could possibly have. And he did it in spite of
- 32:57Speaker 1: the fact that what of what appears to me to
- 32:59Speaker 1: have been an obvious warning sign. Now, again, I bet
- 33:02Speaker 1: if you ask him to do it over again, he
- 33:04Speaker 1: probably would. But that is a decision for him to make.
- 33:07Speaker 1: It is not one for me to encourage. So I
- 33:11Speaker 1: wish that young man the best. He had one of
- 33:13Speaker 1: the best post seasons that I can remember. One of
- 33:14Speaker 1: the most clutch post seasons that I can remember. He
- 33:17Speaker 1: helped get a team that none of us thought of
- 33:19Speaker 1: in this context to a game seven of the NBA finals.
- 33:21Speaker 1: They had a great chance to win that game before
- 33:24Speaker 1: he got hurt. He did that. And that is not
- 33:28Speaker 1: going to be something that gets him solace for a
- 33:30Speaker 1: very long time. And I understand that point. But man,
- 33:34Speaker 1: you're not going to be able to say you came
- 33:35Speaker 1: away from this postseason without a serious respect for Tyrese Halliburton.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Stop calling that man Steve Earth. That's the father of kill.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Let me tell you about Z-Biotics pre-alcohol probiotic. Z-Biotics pre-alcohol
- 33:54Speaker 1: probiotic drink is the world's first genetically engineered probiotic. It
- 33:59Speaker 1: was invented by PhD scientists to tackle rough mornings after drinking.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Here's how it works. When you drink, alcohol gets converted
- 34:06Speaker 1: into a toxic byproduct in the gut. It's a buildup
- 34:09Speaker 1: of this byproduct, not dehydration, that's to blame for rough

- 36:36Speaker 2: All right.
- 36:37Speaker 1: We are not doing, if you haven't heard this go
- 36:39Speaker 1: around on the show, and the reason is, and it's Honestly,
- 36:42Speaker 1: the first time this has ever happened. We had so
- 36:45Speaker 1: much happen that we got to kind of skip out
- 36:48Speaker 1: on that for this week. Don't worry. We'll have weird
- 36:50Speaker 1: stories for you soon. The morning of Game 7 of
- 36:55Speaker 1: the NBA Finals, the word got out that Kevin Durant
- 36:58Speaker 1: had been traded to the Houston Rockets. Damn, I wish
- 37:01Speaker 1: I had gone to Fanatics Fest. I went on Friday.
- 37:05Speaker 1: And Fanatics Fest, and if you don't know this, like
- 37:07Speaker 1: the company Fanatics, it's like their big– Expo show. They
- 37:11Speaker 1: have it at the Javits Center in New York City.
- 37:14Speaker 1: It looked like Comic-Con for athletes from the video. Yes,
- 37:17Speaker 1: and it felt like Comic-Con. Oh, goodness. It got a
- 37:20Speaker 1: little weird in there.
- 37:22Speaker 4: You saw some of the videos.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I was there. It was a little strange. They
- 37:27Speaker 1: get a lot of people to show up.
- 37:29Speaker 4: I'm sure the demographics were about 98% dudes.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Yes, dudes and very kind women, right? And so, you know,
- 37:39Speaker 1: They do the thing that is the model for content everywhere,
- 37:42Speaker 1: which is we just get famous people on stage to
- 37:44Speaker 1: talk to each other. You know what I mean? Like
- 37:47Speaker 1: there's a lot of panels. There's just a lot of
- 37:49Speaker 1: famous people talking to each other, which I don't necessarily
- 37:52Speaker 1: find to be the most interesting thing. But I saw
- 37:55Speaker 1: that my good friend Taylor Rooks was going to be
- 37:57Speaker 1: interviewing Kevin Durant on Sunday. And I thought about going,
- 38:01Speaker 1: but I've been working on a bunch of other stuff.
- 38:03Speaker 1: So I hadn't really been able to make it over there. Right.
- 38:06Speaker 1: And then, of course, the word drops that this trade
- 38:09Speaker 1: has been made while Kevin Durant is on stage. Now,
- 38:13Speaker 1: first of all, if you think Kevin Durant found out
- 38:17Speaker 1: on stage, you don't understand how things work. He may
- 38:20Speaker 1: have found out it was official while he was on stage.
- 38:25Speaker 1: But they did not trade Kevin Durant to Houston without
- 38:28Speaker 1: him having any idea that this was going down. I
- 38:31Speaker 1: feel pretty confident saying that Kevin Durant was involved in
- 38:34Speaker 1: whatever the moves were because what nobody wants to do
- 38:37Speaker 1: is to acquire a disgruntled Kevin Durant. We've seen that move.
- 38:42Speaker 1: You can win, but you're not going to like it. Okay? No.
- 38:46Speaker 1: He was up on what game was going to be
- 38:47Speaker 1: on that trade. Bottom line is Phoenix had no leverage.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Two years ago, Phoenix traded four first-round picks and a
- 38:54Speaker 1: bunch of other stuff. Was it four first-round picks? McHale, Bridges, Cam, Johnson. Like,
- 39:00Speaker 1: it was a haul for Kevin Durant.
- 39:02Speaker 4: Yeah, just remember, McHale, Bridges, who went for four first-round picks,
- 39:07Speaker 4: and they got traded for five first-round picks.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Yes, that is a great point. Yeah. This trade was
- 39:13Speaker 1: the number 10 pick in the draft, Dylan Brooks. Jalen Green,
- 39:19Speaker 1: five second-round picks in order to get Kevin Durant. And
- 39:23Speaker 1: the number 10 pick in the draft was Phoenix getting
- 39:24Speaker 1: its own pick back. What had been long forecast, and
- 39:27Speaker 1: Brian Woodhorse called this trade a year ago, that The
- 39:31Speaker 1: Rockets were getting Phoenix's got a pick, got some of
- 39:34Speaker 1: Phoenix's picks from the Nets because Phoenix is in a
- 39:38Speaker 1: position where they can't even tank to get better because
- 39:40Speaker 1: they don't have control over their picks. And so the
- 39:43Speaker 1: Rockets went to get Phoenix's picks because they're more valuable
- 39:46Speaker 1: to Phoenix than they are to anybody else. And then
- 39:49Speaker 1: Phoenix could perhaps then get those back in or in
- 39:52Speaker 1: the Rockets could use that to get Kevin Durant. They
- 39:54Speaker 1: managed to get Kevin Durant without having to give up
- 39:58Speaker 1: those picks. That is crazy. But it's because Phoenix set
- 40:03Speaker 1: themselves up in such a way that everybody knew they
- 40:06Speaker 1: had to move him. They had ultimately no leverage. The
- 40:11Speaker 1: question was just going to be whether there were teams
- 40:14Speaker 1: who would be willing to trade for Durant without him
- 40:17Speaker 1: saying he wanted to go there. Minnesota, Durant does not
- 40:20Speaker 1: want to go there. Would you be willing to do
- 40:22Speaker 1: what Masai Ujiri did when he got Kawhi Leonard? I
- 40:25Speaker 1: don't care if you want to come. We're going to
- 40:26Speaker 1: try this for a year and we're going to see
- 40:28Speaker 1: how that goes. Was that something that Minnesota was going
- 40:31Speaker 1: to be willing to do? I think that was the
- 40:32Speaker 1: question that surrounded Durant's camp. Nope. Why don't go to
- 40:37Speaker 1: the Rockets? I think this was a seal for the Rockets.
- 40:40Speaker 1: My best friend from growing up hit me and was like,
- 40:42Speaker 1: why are we giving up all of this? We being
- 40:44Speaker 1: the Rockets, like, why are they giving up all of this?
- 40:46Speaker 1: And I'm like, I didn't think they gave up all
- 40:48Speaker 1: the everything, anything. They gave up Dylan Brooks. OK, they
- 40:50Speaker 1: got Ahmed Thompson. Not that you don't want to have
- 40:52Speaker 1: two very good defensive players, but they got another one
- 40:56Speaker 1: of those that's better. OK, cool. They gave up Jalen Green.
- 41:00Speaker 1: I believe that to be addition by subtraction. I just don't.
- 41:04Speaker 1: I don't think I don't think that young man plays
- 41:05Speaker 1: winning basketball. I just don't. And I don't think Phoenix
- 41:08Speaker 1: thinks that either, because everything we hear is that they're
- 41:10Speaker 1: going to move him to a 13. What 13? Who
- 41:13Speaker 1: the hell trying to do that? Anyway, those five second
- 41:18Speaker 1: round picks, second round picks are, you know, a second
- 41:22Speaker 1: round picks are change.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Right?
- 41:25Speaker 1: Like, hey, man, this will cost you $ 18. Damn, I
- 41:29Speaker 1: only got a $ 20. All right, you want somebody's second-round
- 41:32Speaker 1: picks then?
- 41:33Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 41:34Speaker 1: Yeah, they're like $ 1 bills, right? You know what they're like?
- 41:37Speaker 1: They're like when you go to the casino and you
- 41:39Speaker 1: hit for blackjack and blackjack's three to two, but you
- 41:42Speaker 1: did it with some weird number, so they got to
- 41:44Speaker 1: give you a 50-cent piece. Yeah. There, that's what second
- 41:48Speaker 1: round picks are, right? They just gave them a little
- 41:51Speaker 1: change out of their pockets and said they could have
- 41:54Speaker 1: that part. But I don't think the Rockets gave up anything.
- 41:57Speaker 1: And if they are so inclined, they're still in a
- 41:59Speaker 1: position to bring Giannis to the Nigerian ancestral home of America, Houston.
- 42:06Speaker 1: He ain't got to use that funny spelling of his
- 42:08Speaker 1: last name ever again. He come back to Houston, he'll
- 42:10Speaker 1: be back amongst his homies. You know, just hanging out
- 42:12Speaker 1: with engineers all the time. Be right there for him.
- 42:15Speaker 1: And rappers. We got a few of those, too. Shout
- 42:17Speaker 1: out to the homie Toby. The Rockets now. What did
- 42:20Speaker 1: the Rockets not have last postseason? Got to get a shot. Right. Big,
- 42:25Speaker 1: big moment of the game. You need it. What the
- 42:26Speaker 1: Rockets didn't have was a guy to get that shot.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Now they have a guy to get that shot. Huge.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Huge.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Because he'll be able to get that shot for the
- 42:35Speaker 1: rest of his life.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:36Speaker 4: And also they have– they extended their coach, which is
- 42:40Speaker 4: their handle, Sulky KD Insurance. Because you know who is
- 42:42Speaker 4: not interested in Sulky Kevin Durant?
- 42:45Speaker 1: And he's already– look, he's already done it. Yeah. He
- 42:49Speaker 1: may work with him in Brooklyn. He's very aware of
- 42:55Speaker 1: who the guy is that he's getting, and Kevin Durant
- 42:57Speaker 1: likes him. I think for the Rockets, this was great.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Even if they don't get Giannis, I don't think they
- 43:09Speaker 1: gave up anything. Let me tell you the last thing
- 43:10Speaker 1: the Rockets need. The last thing the Rockets need is
- 43:12Speaker 1: the number 10 pick in the draft. In this day
- 43:15Speaker 1: and age, How long is it going to be before
- 43:17Speaker 1: that number 10 pick in the draft is contributing to
- 43:20Speaker 1: helping you win? Like they finished, what was it, number
- 43:24Speaker 1: two in the conference? They should be playing a win
- 43:28Speaker 1: now sort of game. Right now, my hot take is
- 43:32Speaker 1: if Shingun's not going to be your guy guy. And
- 43:35Speaker 1: I think there's a ceiling on how good you're going
- 43:36Speaker 1: to be with Shingun being that dude. I go trade
- 43:39Speaker 1: him to get somebody else. Like I think somebody with
- 43:40Speaker 1: the type of game he has uniqueness of it. If
- 43:42Speaker 1: you're not going to treat him like Jokic, then go
- 43:45Speaker 1: go get somebody else. Like he will be the first
- 43:46Speaker 1: thing he'll be on the first thing to Milwaukee. I think,
- 43:51Speaker 1: if they trade for Giannis. He'll be up there wearing,
- 43:55Speaker 1: what's my man's name? The Ilya Sova jersey, putting on
- 43:58Speaker 1: for the home team. You know what I'm saying? I
- 44:00Speaker 1: believe they're from the same place. But that's where I
- 44:04Speaker 1: think that goes. But I don't think Durant's going to
- 44:09Speaker 1: be guarding anybody. I think that at some point, all
- 44:11Speaker 1: the years do matter. But he'll be able to get
- 44:15Speaker 1: that shot, I firmly believe. for the rest of his life.
- 44:21Speaker 1: The Rockets made this happen, and it continues in a long,
- 44:27Speaker 1: long line of the Houston Rockets getting superstar players or
- 44:33Speaker 1: some players of that ilk. Even if you take it
- 44:37Speaker 1: back to guys like Calvin Murphy and Rudy Tom Jonovich.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Rudy Jonovich was the number two pick in the draft.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Calvin Murphy was a college superstar. That's why he is
- 44:46Speaker 1: in the Basketball Hall of Fame. But you go after
- 44:49Speaker 1: that and I can start rattling off names from year
- 44:52Speaker 1: to year. Rick Barry, Moses Malone, Ralph Sampson, Akeem Olajuwon,
- 45:00Speaker 1: Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, Scotty Pippen, Steve Francis, Yao Ming,
- 45:07Speaker 1: Tracy McGrady, James Harden, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Like, it
- 45:14Speaker 1: goes and it goes and it goes. This is a
- 45:18Speaker 1: franchise that has always been about having big names. And
- 45:24Speaker 1: they just went and got one more. Now we're going
- 45:27Speaker 1: to find out just how much he truly has left.
- 45:36Speaker 4: All right, we got an oldie but a goodie. Tell
- 45:38Speaker 4: us about that time you went up against a professional
- 45:41Speaker 4: athlete coming up. We got some good ones. Here's the
- 45:43Speaker 4: first one.
- 45:45Speaker 2: What's up, Bo? This is Eric and Andy, man. Your
- 45:49Speaker 2: prompt was about the time you ran up against somebody
- 45:53Speaker 2: who would end up being a big star. So I
- 45:55Speaker 2: was a pretty good football player in Indiana, man, decent athlete,
- 45:59Speaker 2: doing my own thing. And I thought, you know, my
- 46:01Speaker 2: senior year, All-State, I'd test my mettle against the best.
- 46:05Speaker 2: So I go to a camp in Ohio that draws
- 46:08Speaker 2: people from all across the Midwest. I'm offensive lineman. We're
- 46:11Speaker 2: out there doing our thing. I looked the part. I'm
- 46:14Speaker 2: a decent-sized guy, pretty athletic, doing our thing. So we'll
- 46:18Speaker 2: get to the one-on-one drills, and I'm going to hold
- 46:21Speaker 2: my own. There's one dude, you know, he tested me.
- 46:24Speaker 2: I can't get to my spot to cut him off.
- 46:26Speaker 2: He's a linebacker, and he keeps getting there a step
- 46:29Speaker 2: before me, and he's starting to realize he got me.
- 46:33Speaker 2: He's in my head a little bit, so he's taught
- 46:35Speaker 2: me a couple times. So we get into, like, the
- 46:37Speaker 2: Oklahoma drills and the one-on-one drills, that kind of thing.
- 46:40Speaker 2: And every time I get up against this dude, it's
- 46:44Speaker 2: a battle. But he's starting to, like, it's becoming clear
- 46:47Speaker 2: to me that he actually knows what's up. So he
- 46:51Speaker 2: thumps me a couple times. I get up and do
- 46:53Speaker 2: my thing. Everybody's cheering. Everybody's cool. But at one point,
- 46:59Speaker 2: we get up there, man. He didn't do this to me, man.
- 47:02Speaker 2: We get up there. We do our thing. I'm standing up,
- 47:04Speaker 2: and he just decided, man– He just mushed me down,
- 47:08Speaker 2: pushed me down, goes around me. And at that point,
- 47:11Speaker 2: my Division I football dream died. I realized it. I'm like,
- 47:15Speaker 2: you know what? I can hustle a little bit, but
- 47:17Speaker 2: these dudes might be a little bigger than me, just
- 47:19Speaker 2: a step faster, stronger, and maybe I'll go someplace where
- 47:22Speaker 2: I can get some playing time. By the way, that
- 47:26Speaker 2: brother's name was Thomas Pepper Johnson. All right, boy, I'll
- 47:30Speaker 2: catch you next time, man. Peace.
- 47:32Speaker 1: First of all, He sounds a lot younger than I
- 47:34Speaker 1: thought he was to be throwing out Pepper Johnson. Ryan,
- 47:37Speaker 1: are you even familiar with Pepper Johnson?
- 47:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:39Speaker 4: I mean, I had to look it up to confirm, but, yeah,
- 47:42Speaker 4: I mean, I certainly didn't see him play.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Yeah, Pepper Johnson played with LT.
- 47:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Yes, and you know he's old school. We ain't been
- 47:51Speaker 1: calling people Pepper for a long time.
- 47:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't know they still made those.
- 47:55Speaker 1: No, no, we might make a Pep every now and then,
- 47:57Speaker 1: but a Pepper? No, that's new or old.
- 48:00Speaker 4: All right, here's the next one.
- 48:03Speaker 2: What's up, Bomani?
- 48:04Speaker 6: This is David from L.A. This story takes place, I'm
- 48:09Speaker 6: calling about the time where you matched up with a
- 48:12Speaker 6: future professional. And I played a little Juco ball in Illinois.
- 48:18Speaker 6: And I'm coming off ACL, and we're about to have
- 48:22Speaker 6: new teammates. And one of these new teammates, he brings
- 48:27Speaker 6: his younger brother. I was like, oh, yeah, younger brother
- 48:31Speaker 6: just got a scholarship, played D1 ball. And in my head,
- 48:34Speaker 6: I'm like, I already been playing college ball, so I'm
- 48:38Speaker 6: about to welcome him to college ball, to the wonderful
- 48:40Speaker 6: world of G-Cup.
- 48:42Speaker 2: So that's what you know.
- 48:44Speaker 6: And plus, I had been seeing him on the local
- 48:47Speaker 6: news in high school, just dunking on people.
- 48:50Speaker 2: So I was like, all right, whatever, man. I'm going
- 48:53Speaker 2: to show.
- 48:53Speaker 6: This young boy what it is. And plus, I got
- 48:57Speaker 6: something to prove because I'm coming off an ACL injury.
- 49:00Speaker 6: The first time, mind you. So anyway, you know, there's
- 49:04Speaker 6: a switch and I end up guarding him. He goes
- 49:07Speaker 6: right to the post and he calls for the ball.
- 49:09Speaker 6: So now I'm like, eh, ain't no bounce in the house.
- 49:12Speaker 2: What you think this is?
- 49:13Speaker 7: Now, I'm all a 6'1. He was taller than 6'1,
- 49:16Speaker 7: but still, it was offensive to me. So I said,
- 49:20Speaker 7: all right, well, you know, he's going to jump in
- 49:21Speaker 7: the air to get the ball as soon as he lands,
- 49:25Speaker 7: forearm to the back. You know, I ain't going to
- 49:26Speaker 7: hurt him, but I'm going to meet him when he drops,
- 49:29Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying, when he comes back down
- 49:30Speaker 7: with some physicality. And sure enough, you know, they threw
- 49:34Speaker 7: him the ball. He jumped to get it.
- 49:36Speaker 1: He landed.
- 49:37Speaker 6: I hit him with the forearms. It's just his plan,
- 49:41Speaker 6: only he slithered and spun off of it so quick.
- 49:46Speaker 7: To where, you know, sometimes you gotta, you can't.
- 49:49Speaker 6: Just follow him. You have to go the other way
- 49:51Speaker 6: to recover. And by that time, he was already in
- 49:55Speaker 6: the air.
- 49:56Speaker 2: And I got boomed on.
- 49:59Speaker 6: And that future NBA Hall of Famer was Dwayne Wade.
- 50:05Speaker 2: He didn't ever since. But Love the show, bro.
- 50:11Speaker 1: First of all, I didn't know y'all said boom in Chicago.
- 50:13Speaker 1: I feel like that's a Texas way. Somebody got boomed on.
- 50:16Speaker 1: He said, I thought I got him. I've been playing
- 50:19Speaker 1: junior college basketball.
- 50:21Speaker 4: I love the visual.
- 50:22Speaker 2: That's a different man.
- 50:24Speaker 1: Yeah. He was in the Matrix.
- 50:29Speaker 4: Getting turned around like he's Roadrunner.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Where'd he go? Where'd he go? Oh, that's funny.
- 50:37Speaker 2: All right.
- 50:38Speaker 4: Here's our last one.
- 50:39Speaker 2: Mr.
- 50:40Speaker 3: Jones, I've been waiting for this one.
- 50:42Speaker 2: I grew up in Pensacola, Florida.
- 50:45Speaker 3: Now, you probably know about five, six people, famous athletes
- 50:51Speaker 3: from Pensacola, Florida. Now, my dad used to take me.
- 50:56Speaker 3: This is when my freshman year, probably around 2011. My
- 51:00Speaker 3: dad used to take me on base after school so
- 51:02Speaker 3: I can play open runs on the baby base. just
- 51:08Speaker 3: to go out there, give me something to do and
- 51:10Speaker 3: just play a ball with the Navy dudes, you know,
- 51:13Speaker 3: get some game, get better. Um, man, I'm waiting to
- 51:18Speaker 3: go in one game. We're waiting around for the next
- 51:22Speaker 3: game to start. And I'm on somebody's five. Now they
- 51:25Speaker 3: usually don't let the young dude come in, but they
- 51:27Speaker 3: let me in, you know, we win a game. And
- 51:30Speaker 3: then it was like how, uh, Charlie Murphy was talking
- 51:36Speaker 3: about Rick James or somebody with that aura. Here comes
- 51:40Speaker 3: Rory Jones Jr. coming into the gym with his five already.
- 51:45Speaker 3: They're all in Jordan gear.
- 51:48Speaker 2: And they just got next.
- 51:50Speaker 3: They didn't have to wait.
- 51:52Speaker 2: You know, they just got next.
- 51:54Speaker 3: So I'm nervous. These Navy dudes was scared. The youngest
- 52:00Speaker 3: dude and the tallest dude was me. I was probably
- 52:04Speaker 3: 5'9 at the time. I had to guard Roy Jones Jr.
- 52:09Speaker 3: And I don't know if he has YouTube clips of
- 52:11Speaker 3: him playing ball, but I swear to you, play Roy
- 52:16Speaker 3: Jones Jr.
- 52:16Speaker 2: In basketball. His shot looked like Kevin.
- 52:19Speaker 3: Duxworth or something like that. He's pulling up like Steph Curry.
- 52:24Speaker 3: He has a post game, and he was giving me
- 52:26Speaker 3: that work. And every other time if I was doing bad,
- 52:30Speaker 3: they'll switch me off. Nah, I had to get.
- 52:33Speaker 2: It the whole game.
- 52:36Speaker 3: At one point in the game, we both went out.
- 52:39Speaker 3: We both went up for a rebound. And he accidentally, like,
- 52:43Speaker 3: nudged me in my face. Not a hard elbow, but
- 52:46Speaker 3: a little one. And my lens and my glasses fell out.
- 52:49Speaker 3: And he couldn't be nicer. But I was more mad
- 52:53Speaker 3: that I had to guard him because they were some
- 52:55Speaker 3: chumps about that.
- 52:57Speaker 2: But, yeah.
- 52:58Speaker 3: If y'all in Pensacola or wherever you see Roy Jones Jr.,
- 53:01Speaker 3: play pig with him. Just play him. You'll see what
- 53:05Speaker 3: I'm talking about.
- 53:07Speaker 2: Thanks for money.
- 53:08Speaker 3: And also, I just want to say whenever I'm feeling down,
- 53:12Speaker 3: the whole ship story brings me up. Peace.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Oh, the whole ship. Brian, one day I'm going to
- 53:17Speaker 1: have to tell you the whole ship. We have a
- 53:19Speaker 1: slow day. I'll tell the whole ship. The whole ship
- 53:22Speaker 1: never fails. But he had to eat the buckets. That's
- 53:25Speaker 1: the words. They made him eat the Roy Jones buckets.
- 53:28Speaker 1: I also love the idea that Roy Jones showed up
- 53:30Speaker 1: with five and they don't wait.
- 53:32Speaker 4: There's very few things that will guarantee you to be
- 53:35Speaker 4: on the voicemails, no matter what is on this. Military
- 53:39Speaker 4: base in Pensacola, pretty high. Walked in like Charlie Murphy
- 53:45Speaker 4: or Prince Story. Almost a guarantee. If you say that
- 53:49Speaker 4: person is Roy Jones, that's an auto selection. That's the
- 53:53Speaker 4: easiest job I had.
- 53:54Speaker 1: I think it worked well. I think it worked well.
- 53:56Speaker 1: But ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us
