- 0:13in a Wednesday doubleheader at the Polo Grounds.
- 0:15The Dodgers entered the game on a hot streak
- 0:17with a 31 -15 record, although they were still
- 0:20a game behind the Giants. They were managed by
- 0:22Walt Alston in his ninth year as skipper. The
- 0:25Mets, managed by Casey Stengel, were struggling
- 0:27in their inaugural season with a 12 -27 record.
- 0:30In this first game of the doubleheader, the Dodgers
- 0:32sent 26 -year -old Sandy Koufax to the mound
- 0:34to face the Mets' Jay Hook. This audio recording
- 0:37is from the New York Radio Broadcast featuring
- 0:39announcers Bob Murphy, Lindsey Nelson, and Ralph
- 0:42Kiner. Well, hi everybody. This is Bob Murphy
- 0:45with Lindsey Nelson and Ralph Kiner, all set
- 0:48to bring you all the action from the jam -packed
- 0:51polo grass this afternoon as the New York Mets
- 0:53welcome back into New York. the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 0:56Now in just a very few moments, the entire Los
- 0:59Angeles Dodgers squad, the coaches and manager
- 1:02Walter Alston, will be presented to the standing
- 1:05room crowd at the polo ground. Right now would
- 1:08be a good time for you to check up on your supply
- 1:10of fine coal wrangle. Wrangle extra dry. Yes,
- 1:15sir, put some wrangle on ice. It can add a lot
- 1:18to your enjoyment of today's doubleheader. Now
- 1:20here is a beer with a clean, clear taste, brisk
- 1:24and bright all the way through. Rheingold is
- 1:27beer as beer should taste. Dry tells you why.
- 1:31And say, right now would be a good time to light
- 1:34up a Viceroy. Viceroy's not too strong, not too
- 1:38light. Viceroy's got the taste that's right.
- 1:42That's right. Now it's just about game time,
- 1:45so settle back with a tall, cold glass of Rheingold,
- 1:48and we'll check the starting lineup. and the
- 1:50batting order for the opening game. Right now,
- 1:59at home plate, our broadcasting colleague, Ralph
- 2:01Kiner, is introducing the entire Los Angeles

- 2:09Wills at short leading off. Jim Gilliam will
- 2:13be at third, batting second. Willie Davis in
- 2:16center field, batting third. Johnny Davis will
- 2:20be in left field, batting fourth. Ron Fairley
- 2:26will be at first base, batting fifth. Frank Howard
- 2:30in right field, batting sixth. Johnny Roseboro

- 3:10in center field batting sixth. Felix Mantilla
- 3:16will be at second base hitting seventh. Sammy
- 3:20Taylor behind the plate, batting eighth. Pitching
- 3:24and batting ninth, right -hander Jay Hooks. The
- 3:28umpiring assignment today, Ed Sudoil works the
- 3:30plate in the opening game. Al Foreman will call
- 3:34the plays around first. Tom Gorman, head of the
- 3:39umpiring team, will be facing the second. And
- 3:42Big Bill Joukowsky will be calling the plays
- 3:45around third. Ed Sudol, Al Foreman, Tom Gorman,
- 3:49and Bill Zukowski of the Men in Blue for today's
- 3:53big Memorial Day doubleheader here at the polo
- 3:55ground. And every seat is going to be taken.
- 4:01The Dodgers and the Giants coming into the polo
- 4:06ground for seven games in five days. We certainly
- 4:11hope you're planning to be a part of the excitement
- 4:12here at the polo ground. We are continuing with
- 4:18the introduction of the Los Angeles Dodgers to
- 4:23the fans here at the Polo Grounds. In the opening
- 4:26game, Sandy Koufax will be on the mound for the
- 4:29Dodgers. Sandy has won six and lost two this
- 4:31year. His last time out, he struck out 16 in
- 4:35beating the Philadelphia Phillies to win his
- 4:3716th game. And already this year, Sandy has struck
- 4:40out 100 men in 83 innings. Big ovation for Duke
- 4:47Snyder as the Duke is introduced to the crowd.
- 5:02Tremendous ovation for Duke Snyder as Duke gets
- 5:06his introduction and moves out on the third base
- 5:08line to take his place with his Dodger teammates.
- 5:17As yet, the coaches and manager Walter Alston
- 5:20have not been introduced, but now Ralph is introducing
- 5:22the coaches. Big hand now for Pete Riesler. Leo
- 5:37DeRosa. Following the introduction of the Dodgers
- 5:50squad, we will have a moment of silence in honor
- 5:58of our war dead and then the playing of our national
- 6:01anthem. That completes the introduction of the
- 6:07Dodgers to the crowd here at the polo ground.
- 6:09The Dodgers swept the series on the West Coast,
- 6:12but two of the three games were tense, bitter,
- 6:15and exciting ball games. As a matter of fact...
- 6:18Now here are the Mets moving out to the field.
- 6:34New York Mets moving out to the playing field.
- 6:37Jay Hook moving to the mound. He'll be caught
- 6:40by Stanley Taylor. time out against the San Francisco
- 6:53Giants. That was the opener of the series in
- 6:55San Francisco. The game, Felix Mantilla put the
- 6:58Mets in front in the 10th inning with a home
- 7:00run, only to have Willie Mays come back with
- 7:03his second home run of the game to win it for
- 7:05the Giants 7 -6 in the last half of the 10th
- 7:07inning. A ball game that Jay pitched all the
- 7:10way. Jay Hook has been pitching real good baseball
- 7:13for the New York Mets. Hook and Miller for the
- 7:17last three weeks have been outstanding. Now the
- 7:22crowd here at the photograph is being asked to
- 7:24rise for a moment of silence on this Memorial
- 7:27Day and then our national anthem. baseball excitement
- 9:06here at the polo ground. Jay Hook throwing in
- 9:09his final warm -up tosses for Sammy Taylor. Setting
- 9:12up the New York Mets defensively, Gil Hodges
- 9:14playing first, Felix Mantilla at second, Elio
- 9:18Chacon at short, and Cliff Cook will be at third.
- 9:21In the outfield, Frank Thomas in left, Jim Hickman
- 9:25in center, and around and right, Joe Christopher.
- 9:28Hook on the mound, and Sammy Taylor behind the
- 9:31plate. And on this Memorial Day... San Francisco
- 9:36will be playing a doubleheader against the Phillies
- 9:38in Philadelphia. The St. Louis Cardinals and
- 9:41Pittsburgh Pirates play a single game at Pittsburgh.
- 9:44The Houston Colts 45s and Chicago Cubs have a
- 9:48single game at Wrigley Field, Chicago. The Cincinnati
- 9:51Reds and Milwaukee Braves play two games in Milwaukee.
- 9:55The Yankees have a noon game and a 9 o 'clock
- 9:58tonight game against the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis.
- 10:01The White Sox and Tigers play two in Detroit.
- 10:03Cleveland and the Orioles two in Baltimore. Washington
- 10:06and Kansas City two in Kansas City. The Red Sox
- 10:09and the Angels two on the West Coast. And now
- 10:13we are all set to get going as Maury Wills steps
- 10:15in to lead off in the game. Maury hitting at
- 10:24239. He's off to a tremendous start. in base
- 10:31stealing. Jay Hook out of his land at the first
- 10:37pitch of the game. He runs up the bun and misses.
- 10:39Strike one. Maury Wills has already stolen 23
- 10:44bases this year. Anytime he gets on, it creates
- 10:47a ballpark full of excitement. Cliff Cook in
- 10:53very close at third against the switch hitting
- 10:54Maury Wills. The outfield, not too deep, maybe
- 10:58a step toward right. The windup pitch by Hook.
- 11:01Inside and low. One ball, one strike. The Dodgers
- 11:05have stolen 50 bases in 46 ballgames. The runner
- 11:10-up to Maury Wills in stolen bases is Willie
- 11:14Davis with 11. Next pitch to him, a ground ball
- 11:17base hit through the hole going into right field.
- 11:20Joe Christopher up with it. And Maury Wills is
- 11:23on, leading off with a doubleheader with a base
- 11:25hit to right. Here's Jim Gilliam. A happy return
- 11:40to New York for Jim Gilliam and the other members
- 11:42of the Dodgers who have fond memories from their
- 11:44playing days at Ebbets Field. Gilliam hitting
- 11:48left -handed against Jay Hook. Leo DeRocher on
- 11:51the coaching lines at third and Greg Malevia
- 11:53coaching at first. Now throw to first by Jay.
- 11:57Wilson usually comes back to the base head first
- 12:00and does so. Gilliam hitting a .267 with 17 RBIs.
- 12:12Now Hook delivers to the plate. Blazing fastball
- 12:16taken inside down around the knees. Gilliam laying
- 12:20off of it. Now checks with Leo DeRozan. The Dodgers
- 12:25have won 16 of their last 20 ballgames. They're
- 12:28a red -hot team. Today they are starting an 18
- 12:31-game road trip. They are riding an eight -game
- 12:34winning streak. First, but it's not in time.
- 13:03One ball and no strikes on Jim Gilliam. Now Jay
- 13:13up in pitching position. Hodges holding against
- 13:15Maury Wills. Here comes the pitch and it's taken
- 13:19outside. He lays off of it. Two balls and no
- 13:21strikes. Anytime Maury Wills is on base, it puts
- 13:25a lot of pressure on that pitcher to keep Wills
- 13:27close, to keep an eye on him, and at the same
- 13:29time, to get that pitch in the strike zone with
- 13:32something on it. 2 -0 delivery. Gilliam takes
- 13:53it, and it's right in there for a call strike.
- 13:55Two balls and one strike. Jay Hook, hard -throwing
- 14:00right -hander from Grayslake, Illinois. Jay's
- 14:04just 25 years old. And with Jay Hook, Bob Miller,
- 14:09and Al Jackson, the Mets feel they have three
- 14:11very fine young pitchers for a long time. Now,
- 14:16Jay varying the things that he does on the mound
- 14:18to make it difficult for Maury Wills to read
- 14:20him. Two balls and a strike. Now hook up in pitching
- 14:31position, makes the stop. Wells holding up the
- 14:34pitch. Ball three, just out of the strike zone,
- 14:37and now the count goes three and one. Let's check
- 14:41that umpire. Ed Sudol says the count is two and
- 14:45one. Scoreboard count says three and one. Elias
- 14:50Cohen shaded a bit towards second. Cliff Cook
- 14:53playing even with the bag, wide of the line at
- 14:54third. Mantilla up a couple of steps on the right
- 15:01side of the infield. A throw to first, and it's
- 15:03not in time. There he goes. A high fly ball at
- 15:14the short left field. Frank Thomas walking in
- 15:16to settle under this one. Makes the catch. One
- 15:18man down. Maury Wells was running, and now he
- 15:21comes back to first base. One man away, that'll
- 15:25bring up the flying Willie Davis. Willie hitting
- 15:27at .331. He took six home runs and knocked 17
- 15:30runs in. Many people consider Willie the fastest
- 15:36man in the game today. Left -hand hitter. The
- 15:40left side of the infield will be pulling up a
- 15:41bit for him to allow for that speed. Night game
- 15:48with the Dodgers tomorrow night. There are good
- 15:50seats available. Certainly hope you're planning
- 15:52to be on hand. The Giants are here Friday night,
- 15:55two games, Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Willie
- 16:02Davis, tall, center, left -hand hitter, stands
- 16:04upright, feet close together. Holds the bat straight
- 16:08up and down. There goes Maury Wells, the ground
- 16:10ball hits the second base. Mantia has but one
- 16:12play. Over to Gil Hodges in time, getting Willie
- 16:15Davis. The Dodgers playing hit and run on the
- 16:18first pitch to Willie, and he bounces out. Now
- 16:21there are two away, and coming up to hit will
- 16:23be Tommy Davis. He had a hot bat against the
- 16:28New York Mets on the West Coast. Tommy hitting
- 16:30a .324, and he leads the Dodgers in the power
- 16:33department with 10 home runs and 45 runs batted
- 16:36in. Orlando Cepeda of the Giants leads the National
- 16:48League in RBIs of 49, and Tommy Davis is the
- 16:51runner -up with 45. Giants have three men in
- 16:57the top five and runs batted in. Pitched by Jay
- 17:02Hook. A pop -up outside first and fouls around.
- 17:05Gil Hodges moving over, moving over to the warning
- 17:07path. He's there and makes the catch. Dodgers
- 17:15are out with no runs, one hit, no errors, one
- 17:19left on. The score in the middle of the first
- 17:22inning, the Los Angeles Dodgers nothing and the
- 17:25New York Mets coming to bat. And now coming right
- 17:29up, jazz variations on a favorite tune. It's
- 17:46not bitter. It's not sweet. It's a dry flavor
- 17:49treat. Won't you try extra dry rhizome beer?
- 17:57Won't you try extra dry rhizome beer? Like the
- 18:04song says, people everywhere sing out, my beer
- 18:07is Rango the dry beer. And dry tells you why.
- 18:12Yes, sir, Dry tells you Rheingold has a brisk,
- 18:15bright, clean taste all its own. Discover the
- 18:18difference Dry makes. Pour yourself a tall, refreshing
- 18:22glass of Rheingold Extra Dry. Enjoy it along
- 18:25with our doubleheader. Sandy Koufax on the mound
- 18:42for the Dodgers in the opener of the doubleheader.
- 18:44Johnny Padres will be pitching the nightcap against
- 18:46the New York Mets' Bob Miller. Sandy, of course,
- 18:50is striking out hitters at a faster pace than
- 18:52anybody in Major League history. A lot of wonderful
- 19:02fans here at the polo grounds, wasting no time
- 19:05in trying to get some action going. Joe Christopher
- 19:08stepping in to lead off against Vandy Koufax.
- 19:11Vandy has won six, lost two. His last time out,
- 19:18he struck out 16 as he went the route to beat
- 19:21the Philadelphia Phillies. Now, Vandy, as he's
- 19:32signed, the wind -up and pitch to Christopher
- 19:34in there at the knee is a call strike one. Setting
- 19:37up the Dodger defense, Ron Fairley at first,
- 19:40Larry Burry playing second, Maury Wills at short,
- 19:43and Jim Gilliam at third. Sandy out of his windup
- 19:48pitches. An off -speed delivery taken outside
- 19:51by Joe Christopher. One ball, one strike. In
- 19:54the outfield, Tommy Davis in left, Willie Davis
- 19:56in center, and Frank Howard is in right field.
- 19:59Tophax on the mound with Johnny Roseboro working
- 20:02behind the plate. Pitching one and one. Off speed
- 20:07again outside. Two balls and a strike. Last year,
- 20:11Sandy won 18, lost 13. This is his first appearance
- 20:17against the New York Mets. He has had three previous
- 20:20appearances at the polo grounds. Lost one game
- 20:23as a starter back in 56. A high infield pop fly.
- 20:27Jim Gilliam in behind the mound is under it waiting.
- 20:30And Gilliam takes it, retiring Joe Christopher.
- 20:37One away, nobody on. That brings up little Elio
- 20:39Chico. One out, nobody on. Elio stepping in.
- 20:56Here's the windup. In comes the pitch to him.
- 20:58Inside, down around the knee, it's ball one.
- 21:01Elio was very concerned as to how he would be
- 21:03treated here at the polo grounds after his scrap
- 21:05with Willie Mays out in San Francisco. Willie
- 21:08being such a great favorite here, he's afraid
- 21:09the crowd might look with disfavor on it. But
- 21:13he got a very nice reception as he came up. Two
- 21:16balls and no strikes. Now Elio checking with
- 21:21Sally Hemus. Sally coaching at third and Cookie
- 21:23Lavagetto coaching at first. Sandy Colfax winds
- 21:28and pitches. Blazing fastball popped a mile high
- 21:31in the air and fouled on the third baseline.
- 21:33Gilliam is waved off by Maury Wills, and it goes
- 21:36out of reach at the last moment just beyond the
- 21:38tarp and into the field boxes, no play. Cliff
- 21:45Cook waiting in the on -deck circle, and then
- 21:48Frank Thomas. Walter Alston brings a red -hot
- 21:52Dodger ball club into the polo grounds. They've
- 21:55won eight straight, 16 of their last 20. Yep,
- 21:58they've been unable to close the gap on San Francisco.
- 22:02Curve is over, strike three called. Check that
- 22:05strike two, beg your pardon, two and two. Even
- 22:12count to two on Elio Chacon. Pitching two and
- 22:19two. Inside and low, it's ball three. Sandy really
- 22:23came into his own last year in posting 18 wins
- 22:26for the Dodgers. Not once but twice, Koufax has
- 22:31struck out 18 in one game. 3 -2 delivery, a little
- 22:35bit outside, ball four, and Chaton walks. Amazing
- 22:53but true about Sandy Koufax is the fact that...
- 22:5734 times during his brilliant career, he has
- 23:00struck out 10 or more batters. He's done it three
- 23:03times already this season. Now, Elio Chacon on
- 23:07first, Cliff Cook waiting. A face through the
- 23:10hole, a base hit to left field. He hit a curveball.
- 23:12Chacon around second is going to try for third.
- 23:15Here's the throw coming in. The slide head first.
- 23:17He's safe on the second goal, Cook. When Conley
- 23:32Davis, the left fielder, juggled the ball just
- 23:34for a moment, Chacon took off like a shot for
- 23:37third base. Davis fired towards third, and Elio
- 23:40left his feet and made a long hit first slide
- 23:42to get in there, and Cook goes to second base.
- 23:47We'll wait for the official scoring on the play.
- 23:49Frank Thomas coming up to hit with runners on
- 23:52second and third, one down. by Tommy Davis. He
- 24:07just kind of juggled it just for a moment, and
- 24:09that was all Saccone needed. It will be scored
- 24:10as a hit and an error. Play scored one and one,
- 24:18a base hit and an error, and they're going to
- 24:20put Thomas on. Frank Thomas will get the intentional
- 24:23pass, and that will bring up Gil Hodges. The
- 24:29Dodgers want to fill that open base at first
- 24:30and set up a possible double play. and also eliminates
- 24:34Frank Thomas, who is in the midst of a tremendous
- 24:37hot streak. Frank has hit safely in 17 straight
- 24:40ballgames. His 13 home runs, back 30 runs in.
- 24:44Now Gil Hodges comes up with the bases loaded.
- 25:09A wonderful reception for Gil Hodges. Gil hitting
- 25:12a 3 -0 -4. He's done a remarkable job considering
- 25:15that he has had to play on a very sore knee.
- 25:19A knee that on some days really bothers him a
- 25:21lot, and there never is a day that it doesn't
- 25:23hurt him. Crowd really enthusiastic now. Three
- 25:28runners take a lead. One man down. Last of the
- 25:30first, no score. Kofax winding. Here's the pitch.
- 25:34Ball one. The overhand fastball outside and low.
- 25:43Hodges batting with Jim Hickman on deck. Now
- 25:51Koufax has his fan from Roseboro, the pitch.
- 25:54Curve outside and low, ball two. 2 -0. Sandy
- 26:09Koufax, a seven -year veteran at the age of 26,
- 26:12trying to pitch out of a jam here in the last
- 26:13half of the first inning. Two balls and no strikes
- 26:16to Gil Hodgins. Now Sandy, into his windup, here's
- 26:19the pitch. And the ball is popped high in the
- 26:22air to short left field. Infield fly rolling,
- 26:24not invoked. Under the ball now, Maury Wills,
- 26:27he grabs it for the out. Elio Chacon just draws
- 26:30the throw and then scampers back to third. Ball
- 26:35carried deep enough into left field so that the
- 26:37infield fly ruling was not invoked. Now there
- 26:40are two away, and Jim Hickman comes up with the
- 26:42bases loaded. Jim hitting a .250. Jim hit a three
- 26:53-run homer off Mike McCormick in the second game
- 26:56of the Sunday doubleheader in San Francisco.
- 26:58It was his sixth homerun of the year. 25 -year
- 27:04-old long striding outfielder bats him right
- 27:06-handed. Dodger infield back deep and straight
- 27:10away. The pitch by Koufax. Swing and a miss.
- 27:12Strike one. Ed Soudal taking time to brush the
- 27:24plate off now. No score. Base is loaded. Two
- 27:29down. Last half of the first inning. Sandy starts
- 27:34winding, now the pitch. Checked swing and a foul
- 27:36ball hit him behind Cookie Lava Jetto. No balls
- 27:39and two strikes down to Jim Hickman. So Jim Hickman
- 27:47has his work really cut out for him now, behind
- 27:49on Koufax, two strikes. Andy winds and pitches.
- 28:03Just off the outside corner, a blazer. One ball
- 28:06and two strikes. Helio Chacon, the lead runner
- 28:18on third. Cliff Cook on second, Frank Thomas
- 28:21on first. Two walks and a base hit by Cook, loading
- 28:25the bases. Now Koufax working in front of Jim
- 28:34Hickman. Around comes the left arm and it's bounced
- 28:38foul. He just got a piece of it to stay in there.
- 28:40The count remaining at one ball, two strikes.
- 28:46Jim Hickman came out of the St. Louis Cardinal
- 28:50organization. The expansion draft, 25 -year -old
- 28:53outfielder from Henning, Tennessee. He has been
- 28:56a very pleasant development and surprise to the
- 28:58New York Mets. Pitching one and two. Changeup.
- 29:08He started to go, then held up just in time,
- 29:10and it breaks outside. Two balls and two strikes.
- 29:13Off -speed curve thrown by Sandy Koufax. That
- 29:17changeup has been a great deal of help to Sandy
- 29:19Koufax, and he credits Norm Sherry with convincing
- 29:22him that he should go more with that changeup,
- 29:24and it's made a much better pitcher out of him.
- 29:30Count two and two on Jim Hickman. Chacon leading
- 29:34down from third. In comes the pitch. Foul ball,
- 29:37right straight back, no play. The first game
- 29:45at Philadelphia today is Juan Marichal against
- 29:47Cal McLeish. Giants nothing and the Phillies
- 29:50nothing at the end of two and a half innings.
- 29:52They'll have a single game at Pittsburgh with
- 29:54Ray Washburn for the Cardinals and Earl Francis
- 29:56pitching for the Parrots. Pitching 2 -2. Fouled
- 30:03again, right straight back. Ed Hickman in his
- 30:06duel against Sandy Koufax stays in there, two
- 30:08balls and two strikes. And now Johnny Roseboro
- 30:11goes about halfway out to the mound to see Sandy
- 30:13Koufax. With one out, Elio Chacon walked on three
- 30:18and two. Cliff Cook then hit the first pitch,
- 30:20a curveball into left field for a base hit. When
- 30:23Tommy Davis juggled the ball for a moment and
- 30:25left, Elio Chacon went on to third, and Cook
- 30:27took second. They intentionally passed Frank
- 30:30Thomas. Then Koufax got Gil Hodges on a high
- 30:33fly to short left field. Two balls and two strikes
- 30:45to Jim Hickman. Koufax out of his wind at the
- 30:50pitch. A high fly, the scoring foul hit down
- 30:54the left field line and into the feet. He had
- 30:58a real polo ground stroke on that one. Pull the
- 31:01ball up into the seats, but it was foul probably
- 31:03by about eight or ten yards. And that one draws
- 31:07the excitement. Pickman has a real good stroke
- 31:13for the polo ground. Beautiful sight to see today.
- 31:19You can't find an empty seat anywhere. Now he
- 31:43winds. Here's the pitch. Outside, it's ball three.
- 31:48Now something has to give. Three and two to Jim
- 31:52Hickman. Bases loaded. Two men down. And three
- 32:06and two. Everybody will be running. The runners
- 32:08start going. The full windup. Now the pitch.
- 32:10Foul back into the screen. Koufax used a full
- 32:13windup, and by the time the ball was fouled back
- 32:16by Jim Hickman, Cliff Cook was practically on
- 32:19third. Elio Chacon drifting back into foul territory
- 32:22to be out of the way of the full hitter was practically
- 32:24home. One of the great Dodger favorites of all
- 32:32time just came in, too. Watch today's doubleheader,
- 32:35Roy Campanella. This time, Kofax will work off
- 32:44the stretch. Here's the pitch. Fouled again back
- 32:47into the screen as Hickman really wages a war
- 32:49against Randy Kofax. Well, it's nice to see Campy
- 32:55here for the big doubleheader. He'll enjoy renewing...
- 33:02Acquaintanceship with all his old buddies on
- 33:03the Dodgers. Count remains, three and two. Bases
- 33:10loaded, two down. Hickman the batter, the runner's
- 33:12lead. Here's the pitch. Struck him out, swinging.
- 33:16But Koufax wins the duel. He got him with a high
- 33:18hard one. And the Mets threaten, but fail to
- 33:21score in their half of the first. No runs, one
- 33:23hit, one error, and three left on. No runs, one
- 33:28hit, one error, and three left on. So at the
- 33:31end of one, the score, the Mets nothing and the
- 33:34Badgers nothing. Well, on a day like that, we're
- 33:38certainly all mighty glad to have National League
- 33:41Baseball back in town. And of course, the people
- 33:44at Liebman Breweries are as happy about bringing
- 33:46you the New York Mets on radio and TV as well
- 33:49as we are about bringing you refreshing Rheingold
- 33:52on tap in cans and bottles. New York is certainly
- 33:55taking to the Mets the way they've taken to Rheingold.
- 33:58You know, Rheingold is New York's largest selling
- 34:01beer year after year after year. And you've made
- 34:04it that way. What's the reason for such popularity?
- 34:07Two little words tell you. Extra dry. They tell
- 34:11you that Rheingold is brewed the long, slow,
- 34:14costlier way with a clean, clear taste that is
- 34:17Rheingold's alone. So what do you say, fans?
- 34:20Why not join me in toasting New York's new favorites,
- 34:23the Mets, with a glass of Rheingold, the longtime
- 34:26favorite of New Yorkers. And people everywhere.
- 34:48At the end of five innings at Metropolitan Stadium
- 34:52in the Twin Cities, the New York Yankees are
- 34:54leading the Minnesota Twins 5 -1. Johnny Blanchard
- 34:58hit a two -run homer in the third inning. Bill
- 34:59Stafford pitching for the Yankees. Joe Bonacoski
- 35:02was the starter for the Twins and lefty Jack
- 35:04Kralik relieved in the sixth inning. That's the
- 35:07only American League score to post right now.
- 35:10The only thing going in the National League right
- 35:12now, Giants nothing and the Phillies nothing
- 35:13after two and a half. Ron Farrelly swings and
- 35:19misses on a curve, strike one. Farrelly wielding
- 35:23a hot bat. He sits safely in 10 straight ballgames
- 35:25for the largest... Longest hitting streak by
- 35:27a Dazzer this year. Fairly hitting at .320. Hit
- 35:31.322 over the full season last year. Former Southern
- 35:35Cal star left -hand batter waiting. A high fly
- 35:38hit deep to left center. Back at full speed goes
- 35:40Hickman. Way back, way back. It's over his head
- 35:43for an extra base hit. Back on the warning path
- 35:45and left center. Fairly around second going to
- 35:47third. The relay by Chacon. He is in safely with
- 35:50a triple. Long triple hit deep to left center
- 36:07field. The ball landed right on the edge of the
- 36:10warning pass. Hickman, after a long run, found
- 36:13the ball just a little bit out of his reach.
- 36:16Ron Fairley has let off here on the second with
- 36:19a three -way fifth. That brings up big Frank
- 36:21Howard. He's been on a batting rampage. He's
- 36:24now hiked that batting average to .317. But as
- 36:28you can imagine, the entire Dodger ball clip
- 36:30has been hot. You don't win 16 out of 20 unless
- 36:32everybody does a lot. Hook into the windup, now
- 36:36the pitch. A ground ball hit hard, a base hit
- 36:39beyond the reach of Elio Chacon. Burley comes
- 36:41in to score, and Howard's down with a run -scoring
- 36:43base hit. So the Dodgers quickly have a run home
- 36:51on the 18th RBI of the year for Frank Howard.
- 37:02Nobody out. Frank Howard on first and Johnny
- 37:05Roseboro coming up. Johnny Roseboro stepping
- 37:17in now to bat against Jay Hook. Roseboro hitting
- 37:21a .264. Frank Howard leading off first. Hodges
- 37:29back about a stride off the bat. Quickly moves
- 37:31up. For a pickoff play that brings Howard back,
- 37:34no throw was made by Jay Hook. Missed defense
- 37:37in the event of a bunt, and the pitch is outside.
- 37:39Ball one. Leo DeRocher on the lines of third.
- 37:52Greg Mulledy coaching at first. Now hook up in
- 37:59pitching position. Checks the runner. The pitch
- 38:02thrown. A high fly. Hit deep to right center.
- 38:05It's a mile out there. Running hard to Pickman
- 38:07and Christopher. It's over their head and bounces
- 38:09up into the crowd. It bounces up into the crowd.
- 38:17For a ground rule double. And that means Frank
- 38:21Howard will have to go back to third. The Mets
- 38:25got a good bounce on that one. Howard easily
- 38:27would have scored on the play. Oh, did he ever
- 38:29hit that. Over the head of Jim Hickman in right
- 38:32center, the ball landed on the warning path and
- 38:34bounced up into the center field bleachers. It
- 38:38is a ground rule double for Johnny Roseboro.
- 38:41He undoubtedly, had the ball not bounced into
- 38:43the crowd, would have had a triple and a run
- 38:45would have scored. Ron Farrelly and Johnny Roseboro
- 38:50have hit long, long drives, both reaching the
- 38:54warning path. First in left center and then in
- 38:59right center. Three hits in a row off Jay Hook.
- 39:11Dave Hillman giving the sign now to start warming
- 39:13up for the New York Mets. The batter is the second
- 39:16baseman, Larry Burright. He's hitting a .317.
- 39:19Infield playing at halfway. The pitch to Burright,
- 39:22a curve over a strike one call. Dave Hillman
- 39:29cranking up in the bullpen as the Dodgers tee
- 39:31off on Jay Hook here on the top of the second.
- 39:34Two booming 400 -foot triples. And a single by
- 39:38Howard sandwiched in between. Chopper off the
- 39:42plate, coming off the mat of Hook. He holds the
- 39:43runner at third. He throws to first in time.
- 39:45They've got Burright. One man away. Baltimore
- 39:48Chopper, the ball hitting home plate and going
- 39:50high in the air. One man away, runners on second
- 39:56and third, and the hitter now will be Sandy Koufax.
- 40:00Sandy has three for 32 on the year. Cook made
- 40:11a good pitch on Burr -Wright. He had him fooled.
- 40:13Burr -Wright tried to check up and bounded the
- 40:16ball into the plate. Sandy batting right -handed
- 40:21must have the infield in close now. Frank Howard
- 40:26on third, Johnny Roseboro on second, one down.
- 40:30Curve over, strike one call. Jay Hook going with
- 40:34that curveball, trying to pitch out of this,
- 40:36Jim, on the top of the second. As Jay looks around
- 40:43before getting up on the pitching slab. Hook
- 40:51into his windup to pitch to Koufax. Strike called.
- 40:53He slowed up on it, got the outside corner with
- 40:56it, and the count strike, too. They will be reaching
- 40:59back for that little something extra, trying
- 41:01hard to strike out Koufax in this spot. Mari
- 41:13Wills is the on -deck batter. Winding and pitching.
- 41:20Inside and low. Koufax lays off of it. One ball
- 41:23and two strikes. The Giants got a run off Cal
- 41:27McClish at the time of the fourth inning to lead
- 41:29the Phillies 1 -0 at the end of three and a half.
- 41:36That's with the infield in tight. Howard on third.
- 41:38Roseboro on second. Now the pitch. Downer hits
- 41:42slowly down the first baseline. Will it roll
- 41:43foul or letting it roll? Foul ball. Foul ball.
- 41:47That ball was off the plate. and just trickled
- 41:50down the first baseline. Since Jay Hook had no
- 41:53chance at all to get Howard at the plate, he
- 41:55let the ball roll when he saw it might go foul,
- 41:57and it did. So the count remains at one ball
- 42:01and two strikes for Sandy Koufax. Here are the
- 42:05warm -ups at Milwaukee. Jim O'Toole for surging
- 42:07Cincinnati, and for the Milwaukee Braves, Ron
- 42:10Fouché. A two -run homer by Dick Stewart in the
- 42:14first inning, and the Pirates lead the Cardinals
- 42:152 -0 at the end of one. Washburn against Francis.
- 42:23One ball and two strikes on Sandy Koufax. The
- 42:26Dodgers lead one to nothing. Runners on second
- 42:29and third one out. The pitch down to Koufax.
- 42:33Breaking ball taken up high. Two balls and two
- 42:35strikes. They've gone six and a half now in Minnesota
- 42:49with the Yankees leading the Twins by a score
- 42:51of six to one. Here's Hook into his windup, pitch
- 42:56to Koufax. Bouncing ball, slowly hit toward third.
- 42:59Cook grabs it, juggles the ball, throws to first
- 43:01in time. He had a play at the plate, but he couldn't
- 43:04get the ball out of his glove. He had to pick
- 43:05at it about three times. By the time he got it
- 43:08out of his glove, he lost his chance on Frank
- 43:10Howard. He then fired the ball to Gilhoud just
- 43:12in time, getting Koufax. They'll give Koufax
- 43:18an RBI on the play. Dodgers lead 2 -0. Roseboro
- 43:22moving over to third. And Maury Wells comes up
- 43:25to hit. Cook wanted to make the play at the plate.
- 43:36Howard was running. But he couldn't get the ball
- 43:39out of his glove in time to make the throw. Ball
- 43:58setting with a runner on third, two men down.
- 44:00Maury's single to right field leading off in
- 44:01the game. Dodgers two and the Mets nothing, half
- 44:04-half of the second. Jay into his wind -up pitches.
- 44:14A little bit low, ball one. Jay hurried his wind
- 44:17-up that time when he caught Roseboro streaking
- 44:19down the line from third. Dodgers with tremendous
- 44:27speed. Looks like the Dodgers are pitching in
- 44:33the speed against the Giants' power. Now the
- 44:36pitch on the way. Inside and low to Maury Wills.
- 44:38Two balls to dust right. Night game against the
- 44:46Dodgers tomorrow night. Giants come in Friday
- 44:48night. Two games Saturday. Single game Sunday.
- 44:55Maury left -hand hitter standing close to the
- 44:58plate. Slightly open stand. The pitch by a hook.
- 45:00Ground ball hit down to first. Gil Hodges knocks
- 45:03it down. It'll be close at first. Out at first
- 45:05base. Hodges to Hook in time. The ball was good
- 45:09hard into the midsection of Gil, but he recovered
- 45:11in time to flip to Jay Hook. Hook can run fast,
- 45:14and he had to to get over there ahead of Maury
- 45:16Wells. In the second inning, the Dodgers get
- 45:18two runs. There were three hits. No errors as
- 45:22such, and one man left on. And now at the end
- 45:25of an inning and a half, the score of the Dodgers
- 45:272 and the Mets nothing. Well, tavern owners all
- 45:32over town have dusted off their welcome mats,
- 45:34given their glasses a little extra shine. Yes,
- 45:37sir, they're all set to welcome you during National
- 45:40Tavern Month with the same friendly hospitality
- 45:43they show all year round. Be sure now to drop
- 45:46into your neighborhood tavern soon. Plenty of
- 45:49relaxing atmosphere and always on tap. Plenty
- 45:52of cold, refreshing Rangold Extra Dry. Rangold
- 45:57is beer as beer should taste. And dry tells you
- 46:01why. It tells you that Rheingold is brewed the
- 46:03long, slow, costlier way for a taste that's brisk
- 46:07and bright and clean, clear through. What better
- 46:11way to fillet National Tavern Month than with
- 46:13a glass or two of Rheingold Extra Dry? Enjoy
- 46:17some today. Now, before Felix Mantilla comes
- 46:24out to bat in the last of the second, let's pause
- 46:26for station identification. This is WGY, the
- 46:31General Electric Station's connectivity. 810
- 46:33on your radio dial. On behalf of the second inning
- 46:48now, a man to lead off against Andy Koufax. Koufax
- 46:52pushed out of a tough jam in the last half of
- 46:54the first inning. It's to Felix, the foul ball
- 46:58back, strike one. Felix hitting a 3 -0 -1. The
- 47:05opener of that game out in San Francisco, the
- 47:07Saturday game, Willie Mays hit a home run on
- 47:11the eighth inning, tied the game 5 -5, and Felix
- 47:13came up with a home run into that strong wind
- 47:15to put the Mets in front 6 -5, only to have Willie
- 47:19come back with a two -run number in the last
- 47:20of the tenth inning to win it for the Giants.
- 47:28and low. One ball, one strike. The last time
- 47:31Mantea faced Dodger pitching, he had four for
- 47:34four. The one run pitch by Koufax. An off -speed
- 47:41delivery taken. Ball two, two, and one. Dodgers
- 47:49two runs on four hits, one error. New York Mets
- 47:51no runs, one hit, and no errors. Now Koufax with
- 47:59his sign winds and pitches to Mantilla, and it's
- 48:02a fly ball at the left center field. Moving over,
- 48:04the left fielder, Tommy Davis, into the alley
- 48:06in left center. He makes the catch for the out.
- 48:10On the way, nobody on. Tommy Taylor coming up.
- 48:18And Jay Hook moves out of the on -deck circle.
- 48:33Sammy Taylor. Left -hand hitter. Facing Sammy
- 48:39Koufax. Fastball inside. One ball and no strike.
- 48:44Sammy hitting a 2 -0 -6. Feet wide apart. Chokes
- 48:52up just a little bit on the handle of the bat.
- 48:54Swing and a miss. One ball, one strike. Dodgers
- 49:01starting on an 18 -game trip as the New York
- 49:03Mets open their homestand. The 1 -1 delivery.
- 49:08Blazer in there, strike two calls. One ball and
- 49:11two strikes. The Mets loaded the bases with one
- 49:14out in the first inning, but Sandy Koufax got
- 49:17Gil Hodges on a fly ball. The short left fielder
- 49:20then struck out Jim Hickman. Breaking ball over,
- 49:25strike three calls. And that's the second strikeout
- 49:29for Koufax. Two outs, nobody on. Jay Hook coming
- 49:32up. Now Jay Hook batting for the first time in
- 49:53the game. Jay hitting a .273. Oh, did he ever
- 49:58hum that one. A blazing fastball right in there
- 50:00for a call strike. Two outs, nobody on. The windup
- 50:10and pitch by Koufax. Strike two, another fastball
- 50:13zipped right in there. He is really firing. Two
- 50:22strike delivery. Strike three called. He went
- 50:25to a curveball and broke it over. Randy Koufax
- 50:28looking as sharp as you can look. Gets Mantilla,
- 50:33Taylor, and Hook in order. No runs, no hits,
- 50:35no errors, then left on. And now at the end of
- 50:38two, the score of the Dodgers 2 and the New York
- 50:40Mets, nothing. Night game with the Dodgers tomorrow
- 50:47night, and there are good seats available. We
- 50:49certainly hope you're planning to be here. Tickets
- 50:51are on sale, of course, at the Advanced Ticket
- 50:53Window on 8th Avenue here at the Polo Grounds.
- 50:55They're also on sale at Grand Central Station
- 50:58at the 42nd and Vanderbilt Ramps and the Long
- 51:01Island Waiting Room of the Penn Station. Remember,
- 51:03too, that for all home games here at the Polo
- 51:05Grounds, ticket reservations may be made at all
- 51:08Howard clothes stores in the New York area. And
- 51:11if you find it even more convenient to purchase
- 51:13your tickets by mail, select any plan that you
- 51:15like, any number of games. any particular nights
- 51:20or days, and address your correspondence to Ticket
- 51:24Manager, the Polo Grounds, New York 39. Box seats
- 51:28are $3 .50, reserve seats $2 .50, include $0
- 51:30.25 for postage and handling. Of course, the
- 51:34Dodgers are here tomorrow night. Sid Alvin Dark
- 51:36brings the first -place San Francisco Giants
- 51:38in on Friday night, two Saturday and one Sunday.
- 51:41That winds up the homestand. The Mets then will
- 51:43have a brief road trip. They'll be gone until
- 51:45June 15th. But on the 15th of June, they'll open
- 51:48a homestand here at the Polo Grounds. And the
- 51:51Chicago Cubs, the Milwaukee Braves, and the Houston
- 51:53Colt 45s will all be coming in. So we're planning
- 51:57ahead now to catch the New York Mets in action
- 51:59right here at the Polo Grounds. Right now we're
- 52:02going along to the third inning. Jim Gilliam
- 52:04is standing close by as Jay Hook throws in his
- 52:06one -up tosses for the third. The Dodgers two
- 52:09and the Mets nothing. The third inning coming
- 52:11up, and coming up to detail every exciting play
- 52:13for you, Ralph Kainer. Hey, Bob, you got a couple
- 52:19of tickets for some friends of mine here today?
- 52:24Ralph, I think for the list of things, they'll
- 52:26have to sit here in the booth with us. Boy, there
- 52:28certainly isn't any seats. Oh, it's a 2 -0 game
- 52:32as we move through two. Dodgers scored two in
- 52:34the second inning. Ron Fairley led off with a
- 52:37triple to left center field. He was scored by
- 52:39Frank Howard when he singled the left. And John
- 52:41Roseboro moved Howard to third base with a long
- 52:44double, a round road double, the ball bouncing
- 52:46in the stands. And Koufax helped his cause when
- 52:49he brought Howard in from third when he grounded
- 52:52out to third. Junior Gilliam, the first batter
- 52:55here in the top of the third. Jay hooked the
- 52:58pitcher, and his first pitch is a high slider
- 53:01that does not come down, ball one. Gilliam batting
- 53:07for the second time, quite out to left field
- 53:09in the first inning. He brought a .267 average
- 53:12into New York City. Fastball that's fouled away.
- 53:16One ball, one strike. Dodgers have an eight -game
- 53:21winning streak going, and they have won 16 of
- 53:23their last 20 -ball games. Ironic. Part of it,
- 53:28the four games they lost in that 20 -game span,
- 53:30all to the St. Louis Cardinals. The right -hander
- 53:34back with a change of pace that's outside. Ball
- 53:36two. Two balls and one. Dodgers trail the league
- 53:42-leading San Francisco Giants by one and one
- 53:45-half games. Cook returns to the play with a
- 53:51fastball, and again it's fouled straight back
- 53:54for strike two. Two balls and two strikes. Gilliam
- 53:58leading off in the top of the third inning. He'll
- 54:00be followed by Willie Davis, then Tommy Davis.
- 54:15Jay Hook with a 2 -2 pitch. Up a little bit too
- 54:18high. Ball three. So the cast goes full on Junior
- 54:21Gilliam. It's a 2 -0 game. Dodgers lead. Ed Sudol,
- 54:33a home plate umpire. Setting behind Sammy Taylor.
- 54:38The 3 -2 pitch to Gilliam is low. Ball four.
- 54:41That's the first walk issued by Jay Hook. And
- 54:45Gilliam gets first base free as he leads off
- 54:48here in the top of the third. And the batter
- 54:49coming on now, Willie Davis. Willie Davis grounded
- 54:57out to the second baseman. He is 0 for 1. Came
- 55:00in at 331. Left -handed batter. Playing in center
- 55:08field. Throw to first base, a lob draw, and Gilliam
- 55:15is back with no trouble. First pitch to Davis
- 55:26is lined to right field, but going foul. Into
- 55:28the lower outfield area, in the lower deck, but
- 55:32fouled by about 20 feet. Willie Davis getting
- 55:36around in a curveball, pulling the ball too much.
- 55:39So, Junior Gilliam, now known as... Jim Gilliam
- 55:42returns to first base, and it's a strike one
- 55:45count. In 1959, Tommy Davis, the on -deck batter,
- 55:58led the Pacific Coast Lincoln hitting. Then Willie
- 56:00Davis followed the next year and led it. Next
- 56:04pitch to Davis as he squares around to beat out
- 56:07a bump, but he takes for ball one. One ball,
- 56:09one strike. Tommy Davis for Spokane hit .345
- 56:17to lead the league in 1959. There's a drive deep
- 56:25to right. It could go all the way. Christopher
- 56:27back by the wall. He can't get to it. There it
- 56:29goes. Deep to right center field into the upper
- 56:47day. And that's his seventh home run of the year.
- 56:49And he has driven in two runs with a home run
- 56:52his 19th. So the Dodgers now out in front. Four
- 56:57to nothing. And Dave Hillman is up in the bullpen
- 57:03for the New York Mets. Now the batter, Tommy
- 57:13Davis. He's a right -handed batter. 0 for 1.
- 57:15And the first pitch is a high curve that goes
- 57:17over the top of his head. Ball one. Back to the
- 57:29plate. Ball two. So Jay Hook now trailing 4 -0.
- 57:34Balling behind Tommy Davis. Two balls and no
- 57:37strike. Tommy Davis batting .224 at the start
- 57:47of the ballgame. He lives in Brooklyn. Next pitch
- 58:02to him is high. Actually, he has moved from Brooklyn.
- 58:05He lives in Thompson, California. He was born
- 58:07in Brooklyn. 3 -0 pitch to Tommy Davis. He takes
- 58:17it automatically. Strike one, call. The cannon
- 58:20now, three balls and one strike. Still low enough.
- 58:22Two runs are in. The score, 4 -0 in favor of
- 58:25the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jay Huck looking for
- 58:35his fourth win of the season. Comes back with
- 58:37a high slider that slides out of his hand. Goes
- 58:39over the top of Davis' head. It's walk number
- 58:42two. Tommy Davis getting first base. And the
- 58:46batter is Ron Fairley. Fairley tripled to deep
- 58:55left center to score the first run in the second
- 58:57inning. And here comes manager Casey Stengel.
- 59:03Dave Hillman has been warming up in the bullpen
- 59:06for the Mets. He was up in the last inning when
- 59:08the Dodgers scored two. He's also been up since
- 59:12Davis' home run here in this inning. And there's
- 59:18the sign. Casey Stengel with the hook to Jayhook,
- 59:21taking him out of the ballgame. It'll be Dave
- 59:26Hillman coming in. So officially, Jayhook worked
- 59:33two innings. He gave up all four of the runs
- 59:36in the ballgame, allowing five hits. He struck
- 59:39out none, and he walked two. He is, at this moment,
- 59:46the pitcher of record. Well, don't forget the
- 59:54New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers will
- 59:56be playing here in a night game tomorrow night.
- 59:59Then it will be the San Francisco Giants moving
- 1:00:03in to the polar grounds for a night game Friday
- 1:00:05night, a doubleheader on Saturday, and, of course,
- 1:00:07a single game on Sunday. Four big games with
- 1:00:09the Giants. And it looks as though Roger Craig,
- 1:00:13who was involved with the Giants in that good
- 1:00:15Donnybrook out in San Francisco, will be the
- 1:00:18starting pitcher in the Friday night game. You
- 1:00:22can purchase tickets to all these games at three
- 1:00:24locations downtown. Polar Grounds, Grand Central
- 1:00:29Station, over on the Vanderbilt Ramp side, Pennsylvania
- 1:00:34Station, and the Long Island Rating Room. You
- 1:00:37can also make ticket reservations at all the
- 1:00:39Howard Groban stores throughout the New York
- 1:00:40area. Bob, what have you got in the score? At
- 1:00:46the end of two and a half, Ralph, Pittsburgh
- 1:00:48leading the Cardinals two to nothing on Dick
- 1:00:50Stewart's two -run homer. That's Washburn against
- 1:00:51Francis. Cincinnati and Milwaukee no score at
- 1:00:55the end of one or two against the Shea in their
- 1:00:56first game. Roy Seavers homered in the first
- 1:00:59inning off Juan Marichal to tie up the Giant
- 1:01:02Philly game at 1 -1 at the end of five. Here
- 1:01:05are the warm -ups for Chicago. Dean Stone, a
- 1:01:07left -hander for the Colt 45s, and rookie Cal
- 1:01:10Koontz, a right -hander for the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:01:12In the American League. They are being held up
- 1:01:16because of rain now at the end of 7 in Minnesota
- 1:01:19with the Yankees leading the Minnesota Twins
- 1:01:216 -1. Bill Stafford for the Yankees. Kralik relieved
- 1:01:24Bonikowski. Johnny Blanchard hit a two -run homer.
- 1:01:27Nothing yet on Washington at Kansas City. Here
- 1:01:30are the warm -ups at Detroit for the White Sox,
- 1:01:32Johnny Bazzard, and for the Detroit Tigers, Phil
- 1:01:34Regan. They're underway in Baltimore. Cleveland
- 1:01:37nothing. The Orioles nothing. Pedro Ramos pitching
- 1:01:40for Cleveland and Chuck Estrada on the mound
- 1:01:42for the Baltimore Orioles. The remaining action
- 1:01:47in the American League, the Red Sox meet the
- 1:01:49Los Angeles Angels on the West Coast, and that,
- 1:01:52of course, will be much later in the day. Well,
- 1:01:55the Yankees, they are playing a noon game, which
- 1:01:56has gone 7, with the Yankees in front 6 -1, now
- 1:01:59being delayed because of rain, and they will
- 1:02:01play a game that starts at 9 o 'clock tonight
- 1:02:03in New York. So that's the complete rundown on
- 1:02:06the scores of other games, and right here with
- 1:02:08our pitching change made, Dave Hellman, just
- 1:02:11about warmed up and ready to go, and all set
- 1:02:13to follow the action along for you again, Ralph
- 1:02:14Kiner. Well, Jay Hook, who had pitched complete
- 1:02:17games in his last two starts, losing 3 -2 at
- 1:02:19Houston and 7 -4 in 10 innings at San Francisco,
- 1:02:22is now out. He's the pitcher on record. And in
- 1:02:25the ballgame, Dave Hillman. Dave, a right -hander,
- 1:02:28is making his 10th appearance of the year, his
- 1:02:31eighth for the New York Ball Club. He has worked
- 1:02:36a total of 12 and one -third innings, and he
- 1:02:38has a record of no wins and no losses. And his
- 1:02:41first man will be Ron Farrelly. He goes to first
- 1:02:43base to... Move Tommy Davis back there. No one
- 1:02:50out. A runner at first to score 4 -0 in favor
- 1:02:52of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Curve ball to Ron
- 1:02:56Fairley. That's just too low. Ball one. One ball
- 1:02:58and no strike. Sammy Taylor, the catcher, thought
- 1:03:02he had that one. It's Gil Hodges at first. At
- 1:03:05second base, Felix Mantia. The shortstop, Elio
- 1:03:08Chacon. The third baseman, Cliff Cook. The outfield,
- 1:03:11Thomas, Hickman, and Christopher left to right.
- 1:03:18Now Hellman back with a 1 -0 pitch. It's swung
- 1:03:20on and fouled back, straight back of home plate
- 1:03:22for strike one. One ball and one strike. Hellman
- 1:03:25with a high fastball. Hellman was obtained from
- 1:03:43Syracuse after being sent there. After trial
- 1:03:46by the Cincinnati Reds in spring training. He's
- 1:03:52back with a fastball. It's down the line. It
- 1:03:54could be in the stands. It's over by the wall,
- 1:03:56and it's a home run. Ron Fairley with the so
- 1:04:06-called proverbial Chinese home run. It dropped
- 1:04:09into the upper deck right near the foul line,
- 1:04:12and the Dodgers lead 6 -0. Bobby Davis scoring
- 1:04:16in front of him. Guard one of the runs to Jay
- 1:04:34Hook. He's tried now with five. The other two,
- 1:04:37Dave Hillman. And the batter now, Frank Howard.
- 1:04:42Her ball to Frank Howard, catching on the outside
- 1:04:44corner, strike one. That's Ron Fairley's first
- 1:04:49home run of the year. He now has 17 runs batted
- 1:04:52in. Howard with a drive to right center. Christopher
- 1:04:58going deep there. It's way back, and he makes
- 1:05:01the catch right on the warning track. Frank Howard
- 1:05:06chasing Joe Christopher right into the warning
- 1:05:08track about two steps from the wall and deep
- 1:05:11right center. And that's out number one. Well,
- 1:05:18the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have actually won
- 1:05:20their ballgames this year on speed and not much
- 1:05:23power, showing plenty here today in the photo
- 1:05:25ground. They have had two home runs, a triple
- 1:05:28and a ground rule double. And the batter now
- 1:05:31is John Roseboro. First pitch to him, a curve
- 1:05:36that's in the dirt. Ball one. Roseboro, his first
- 1:05:40time up. doubled into the deepest area in the
- 1:05:44ballpark, and the ball bounced on the warning
- 1:05:47track into the stands for a ground rule double.
- 1:05:50Left -handed batter, and Hillman comes back with
- 1:05:52a curve, swung on and missed, strike one. Well,
- 1:06:01there's only been one ball hit into the center
- 1:06:03field stands here at the Polar Grounds in regular
- 1:06:05season play, and that was by Joe Adcock. Curve
- 1:06:11high, ball two. But if there is one person who
- 1:06:14might be able to do it, it's Frank Howard right
- 1:06:17here with a Los Angeles ball club and possibly
- 1:06:19another. Orlando Cepeda, both those boys with
- 1:06:22tremendous power to center field. And, of course,
- 1:06:25they'll be playing here throughout this weekend.
- 1:06:31Hillman with a curve that's low, ball three.
- 1:06:33Three balls and one strike. It's a 6 -0 game,
- 1:06:37top of the third inning. 3 -1 pitch to Roseboro,
- 1:06:49grounder down to Hodges. He takes it, will go
- 1:06:51all the way, makes the tag at first base himself
- 1:06:53for out number two. Two men down now, and the
- 1:06:59batter is Larry Burright. The Dodgers went out
- 1:07:08in front in the second inning when Marilyn Howard
- 1:07:11scored. Now they've added four more here in the
- 1:07:15top of the third. Larry Burride, a right -handed
- 1:07:20batter, takes a curve. It's in the dirt for ball
- 1:07:22one. Burride came in the ballgame, hitting 317.
- 1:07:25He is 0 for 1. Rookie second baseman for the
- 1:07:32Los Angeles Dodgers. Tries to check his swing,
- 1:07:38but goes too far. It's strike one. One ball,
- 1:07:41one strike. Dave Hillman on the mound for the
- 1:07:58Mets in relief of Jay Hook. Next pitch to Burlight.
- 1:08:04Lined in the center field. A base hit. Coming
- 1:08:06over to field the ball, Joe Christopher. And
- 1:08:09now the Dodgers have a man on first base with
- 1:08:12two outs in the batter, Sandy Kopach. Seventh
- 1:08:15base hit in the ballgame. The second one given
- 1:08:17up by Dave Hillman. The Mets played three games
- 1:08:25with the Dodgers prior to this one. Two of them
- 1:08:28decided in the eighth inning. The other was a
- 1:08:30course around. Danny Koufax didn't participate
- 1:08:34in any of those three games. This is his first
- 1:08:36start. He's a right -handed batter. First start
- 1:08:41against the Mets. He is 0 for 1, but he has driven
- 1:08:45in one of the six runs. Curveball, it's in the
- 1:08:50dirt, dug out by Sammy Taylor. Nice play. Holding
- 1:08:53at first base. Larry Burright. Two men down.
- 1:09:01As Hellman goes into the stretch. He throws the
- 1:09:06first base and Burright dives back in, he says.
- 1:09:18Back to the play to call strike. One ball and
- 1:09:21one strike. Hillman catching with a fastball,
- 1:09:26knee -high in the outside corner. Sandy Koufax
- 1:09:32brought a 094 batting average into the ballgame.
- 1:09:35He has had three hits this year, 32 times at
- 1:09:38bat. That's to him, swung on and missed, strike
- 1:09:40two. So the count now, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:10:03One and two to Sandy Koufax. And the pitch is
- 1:10:08taken outside. Ball two. Two and two with two
- 1:10:11outs. Dave Hellman on the mound looking for his
- 1:10:23first victory as not lost one so far this year.
- 1:10:29And he returns to the plate with a runner starting
- 1:10:31to go and holding, and he gets him on a strikeout
- 1:10:33for strike three. No average hours aside, that's
- 1:10:36the first strikeout by Dave Hellman and in the
- 1:10:39ballgame. And in the top of the third inning,
- 1:10:45the Dodgers score four runs on two hits. There
- 1:10:51were no errors. One man left in the score at
- 1:10:53the end at two and one -half innings of play.
- 1:10:55The Los Angeles Dodgers six, the New York Mets.
- 1:10:58Nothing. You know, going through the rule book
- 1:11:02the other day, we took up a Ringo Riddle for
- 1:11:05all you baseball fans. Now, you may know that
- 1:11:08when a base runner is hit by a batted ball, a
- 1:11:10batter automatically gets credit for a hit, and
- 1:11:13the runner, of course, is automatically out.
- 1:11:15But who gets credit for the put -out? Think about
- 1:11:18that one. Well, if you know your baseball, you
- 1:11:22may have known that the fielder nearest the runner
- 1:11:25gets the credit for the put -out. And if you
- 1:11:27know your beer, you'll surely know this. Two
- 1:11:31little words, Extra Dry, tell you why Rheingold
- 1:11:33has a taste no other beer can match. They tell
- 1:11:36you that Rheingold is brewed the long, slow,
- 1:11:38costlier way for a taste that's brisk and bright
- 1:11:41and clean, clear through. So why not find that
- 1:11:44out for yourself? Enjoy a cool, refreshing glass
- 1:11:47of Rheingold Extra Dry today, right along with
- 1:11:50the game. And now while we have time before the
- 1:11:52bottom of the third starts, we pause for station
- 1:11:54identification. This is WGY, the General Electric
- 1:11:59Station's connectivity 810 on your radio dial.
- 1:12:09Danny Koufax to Joe Christopher in his first
- 1:12:12pitch to swung on a miss, strike one. Motto of
- 1:12:16a third with the Mets hitting six to tie. Joe
- 1:12:19Christopher batting for the second time, popped
- 1:12:21up to the third baseman, Jim Gilliam, in the
- 1:12:23first inning. He is 0 for 1. Fast ball that's
- 1:12:27fouled away. Strike two. Koufax, who started
- 1:12:35slowly in the first inning and worked the six
- 1:12:37batters, getting Jim Hickman on the strikeout
- 1:12:40after he had hit a foul home run where the base
- 1:12:44was loaded. And the second he worked through
- 1:12:47it, one, two, three with two strikeouts. A big
- 1:12:49curveball at town long. One ball and two strikes.
- 1:12:54Koufax has the biggest and best curveball, I
- 1:12:57believe, in the major leagues. Also has a fine
- 1:13:02fastball to go along. There's a curve, but that
- 1:13:05one hung high. Ball two. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:13:08This curveball, a lot like Max Lanier's curveball,
- 1:13:11and Max pitched back in the early 40s for the
- 1:13:15St. Louis Cardinals. Right off the top. It rolls
- 1:13:20right off the table. Last year, Koufax struck
- 1:13:27out 269 batters. Fastball drilled to left field.
- 1:13:31This one moves Tommy Davis deep to left field,
- 1:13:33but he has room, and he makes a catch. That ball
- 1:13:38hits deep, away from the wall, and straightaway
- 1:13:41left field for out number one. Now one is down,
- 1:13:51and Elio Cho comes in. Elio Chacon. Elio walked
- 1:13:55in the first inning. Got as far as third base
- 1:13:58on an error by Tommy Davis in left field. Right
- 1:14:01-handed batter playing shortstop. First pitch
- 1:14:04to him, a fastball that's low inside. Ball one.
- 1:14:13Now Ed Sudol asks to take a look at the ball.
- 1:14:16And he throws it out. Go back. last year with
- 1:14:23his 269 strikeouts, broke a record set back in
- 1:14:271903 by Christy Matthews. Four strikeouts in
- 1:14:31the season. One -all pitch to Chacon, lined in
- 1:14:38the center field, a base hit. Elio going to first
- 1:14:41base, wound deep there, and holds as Willie Davis
- 1:14:44comes up with the ball. That is hit number two
- 1:14:47off Sandy Koufax, and Chacon is safe at first
- 1:14:49base with one out, and the batter is Cliff Cook.
- 1:15:02left field his first time up. He came in at 2
- 1:15:05-0 -8. Right -handed batter playing third base.
- 1:15:08It's a 6 -0 game. Dodgers at the end of two and
- 1:15:13one -half innings of play. The goal not being
- 1:15:16held on. The first pitch to Cook is swung on
- 1:15:18a miss. Strike one. in his last outing struck
- 1:15:33out 16 Philadelphia Philly batters. Flashball
- 1:15:37is fouled away and the Cavs will go to 0 -2.
- 1:15:43So far through the season, Sandy has pitched
- 1:15:4984 and one -third innings. And in that time,
- 1:15:54he has struck out 102 batters. He's the only
- 1:15:59pitcher in... Major League history. You have
- 1:16:03averaged more than nine strikeouts a game throughout
- 1:16:07a career. Next pitch is low. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:16:13In his first ball game, his first Major League
- 1:16:15start, he struck out 14 batters. And he did all
- 1:16:20that on strictly a fastball. Cliff Cook swings
- 1:16:31at his next pitch, and it's popped up and going
- 1:16:33foul out of play. Strange thing about Koufax,
- 1:16:50last year was the first year that Koufax ever
- 1:16:52won a ball game in April. Her ball swung on,
- 1:16:57bouncing in the dirt. Runner holding there. It's
- 1:17:00strike three. That ball bounced just about on
- 1:17:03home plate. That curve snapped right off and
- 1:17:06right on down. So it's strikeout number four
- 1:17:08by Sandy Kopach. Out number two in the batter's
- 1:17:11flank, Thomas. Thomas was given an intentional
- 1:17:22walk in the first inning, which loaded the bases
- 1:17:27up. had runners at second and third at the time.
- 1:17:30So he is still batting 335, which was his average
- 1:17:38at the start of the game. Go back to Thomas with
- 1:17:41a high fastball, ball one. Thomas has hit safely
- 1:17:52in his last 17 games over that period. He hit
- 1:17:57it at a .386 clip. Had five home runs, three
- 1:18:00doubles, and two triples. Strike called. A throw
- 1:18:03pass comes in down around the knee. One ball,
- 1:18:05one strike. Bob Murphy and Lindsey Nelson from
- 1:18:24the polar grounds in the first game of two here
- 1:18:27in Memorial Day. And the first of a three -game
- 1:18:30series with a loss on the Dodgers. Curveball
- 1:18:33swung on a miss by Thomas. Roseboro catching
- 1:18:37the ball, moving out towards first base. There's
- 1:18:39a throw there. Chacon on first with two outs.
- 1:18:44Dodgers with two runs in the second, four in
- 1:18:46the third. Lead it six to nothing. There's a
- 1:18:50good curve, but just inside. Ball two. And Colfax
- 1:18:53thinks that he had that one. He comes off the
- 1:18:56mound, walks halfway in to Ed Sudol. Now Sudol
- 1:18:59with his mask off, look out, walking out in front
- 1:19:02of home plate. Now he's back, and the mask goes
- 1:19:08on, so everything is all right. When that mask
- 1:19:10comes off, you've got to get careful. They leave
- 1:19:16it on, you're not in too much trouble. 2 -2 pitch
- 1:19:20to Thomas. A change -up at just too high. Ball
- 1:19:23three. To the count of four, Secona's first base
- 1:19:25will be going with two men out. And the score
- 1:19:32of the ball game, 6 -0 in favor of the Hawkeye
- 1:19:35Massagers. The first shift that we know about,
- 1:19:41and possibly not the first of all time, but in
- 1:19:43modern days, was put on against Ted Williams
- 1:19:45by Lou Boudreau when he was the manager of the
- 1:19:48Cleveland Indians. And they used the reverse
- 1:19:50of this shift, leaving the left side open and
- 1:19:53covering on the right. Williams, the left -handed
- 1:19:56batter. 3 -2 pitch. A curveball. Got him looking.
- 1:20:02Strike three. And that's strikeout number five.
- 1:20:06Oh, that was a big curve that rolled right off
- 1:20:09the table. So at the end of three. After the
- 1:20:14Mets have no runs on one hit. There were no errors,
- 1:20:18and they left one on the score. The Los Angeles
- 1:20:21Dodgers, six. On seventh, the Mets, no runs on
- 1:20:26two. Well, plenty of action coming your way.
- 1:20:33Another game here today, and just in case you're
- 1:20:36buying nearby, you can drop in. I think you can
- 1:20:38squeeze in here somewhere, but plenty of excitement
- 1:20:40coming off. You know, you can mail in for tickets
- 1:20:43throughout the season, especially convenience
- 1:20:45here. All you have to do is be sure to tell how
- 1:20:49many tickets you want and the type. Box seat
- 1:20:52to 350, reserve seat to 250. Send a check or
- 1:20:57money order and include an additional 25 cents
- 1:21:01to handle the mailing charges. And mail to ticket
- 1:21:05manager, Hall of Grounds, 39 New York. Be sure
- 1:21:10to specify the date. And to specify the number
- 1:21:14of tickets you want in coverage with the price
- 1:21:17and its additional $0 .25. Plenty of baseball
- 1:21:21action coming your way. The Mets here with the
- 1:21:23Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:21:25And then, after a short trip, they come back
- 1:21:27on June 15th. Well, at the top of the fourth
- 1:21:31inning, the score is 6 -0 in favor of the Dodgers.
- 1:21:34And the first pitcher, first pitch by David Hellman,
- 1:21:37the pitcher is hit on the ground through the
- 1:21:38hole in the right field by Maury Wells. Coming
- 1:21:41up with the ball is Joe Christopher, and Wills
- 1:21:44comes up with his second base in. He now has
- 1:21:47two for three. Major league leader in stolen
- 1:22:08bases. That first base in the batter is Jim Gilliam.
- 1:22:11Batting left -hander, he just switches her. Batting
- 1:22:13from the left side against the right -hander.
- 1:22:15Hillman with his first pitch. It's outside low.
- 1:22:17Ball one. Dodgers now with eight bases in the
- 1:22:24ballgame. The gold arm with his sixth run. Gilliam
- 1:22:29has walked and fired out to left field. He also
- 1:22:32has scored a run. So to first base, Wills dives
- 1:22:37back in, but he is there way before the tag.
- 1:22:41Gil Hodges holding. Wills has stolen 18 consecutive
- 1:22:46bases before the Mets broke his streak in Los
- 1:22:48Angeles. He goes now. The pitch is outside. Taylor
- 1:22:54Stroll is up on the shoulder of Wills in the
- 1:22:57center field, and it goes to stolen base, and
- 1:22:59Wills holds at second. Amore Wills now with his
- 1:23:0324th stolen base. And he had quite a jump and
- 1:23:07beat the throw at second by quite a margin. Now
- 1:23:12warming up in the bullpen for the Mets, Bob Moorhead.
- 1:23:30Junior Gilliam with a count of one ball and no
- 1:23:33strike. Make that two balls in those strikes.
- 1:23:39And with Maury Wills out at second base. No one
- 1:23:42out in the top of the fourth. The score is 6
- 1:23:44-0 Dodgers. Dave Hillman looking at Wills. Now
- 1:23:54returns to the plate. It's lined on the right
- 1:23:56field line. A base hit off of the wall. Bouncing
- 1:23:58into Joe Christopher's hands. He can't make a
- 1:24:01play home as he picks the ball up and holds Gilliam
- 1:24:03at first base. Score of the ball game now, 7
- 1:24:07-0, as Gilliam picks up his first run batted
- 1:24:09in. Hit number nine, and the score now, 7 -0,
- 1:24:25as Bob Moorhead continues to throw in the bullpen
- 1:24:29for New York. Now the batter, Willie Davis, who
- 1:24:45has a two -run home run to his credit and two
- 1:24:48times up. Willie with his seventh home run of
- 1:24:50the season, a left -handed batter playing in
- 1:24:52center field. No one out. Gilliam at first base.
- 1:25:03Dave Hillman to the mound with a curveball. It's
- 1:25:06hit down through the hole in the right field
- 1:25:08of base hit. Gilliam going to third base. Does
- 1:25:11not draw a throw as Christopher comes in with
- 1:25:13the ball. And Willie Davis gets his second base
- 1:25:16hit. That's three in a row here in the top of
- 1:25:19the fourth inning. And it brings manager Casey
- 1:25:27Stengel out of the dugout. Raleigh Davis came
- 1:25:36into the ballgame batting .331. He has picked
- 1:25:39up two hits and three times up, so that will
- 1:25:41certainly aid to his batting average. At the
- 1:25:50start of today's action, Orlando Cepeda was the
- 1:25:53National League leading hitter, followed by Bill
- 1:25:57Williams of the Chicago Cubs. Opened American
- 1:26:01League, Jimenez. Manny Jimenez with the Kansas
- 1:26:04City Bar Club, formerly a Milwaukee player, was
- 1:26:08way on top. He was up around .398. Well, we're
- 1:26:13going to have a change in pitchers as Casey Stengel
- 1:26:16uses the hook for the second time. It'll be Bob
- 1:26:18Moorhead. Hillman officially pitched one inning.
- 1:26:22He came in in relief of Jay Hook after Hook had
- 1:26:27given up a walk, a home run, and a walk at the
- 1:26:30start of the third. Hillman allowed a home run
- 1:26:33to run fairly, which scored two runs. One of
- 1:26:36the runs being charged to Jay Hook. And then
- 1:26:39he got the side out. Here in the top of the fourth,
- 1:26:48Roy Wills went off with a single. Stone's second
- 1:26:50scored when Gilliam lined a single off the base
- 1:26:53of the wall by the foul line. And then Willie
- 1:26:56Davis moved Jim Gilliam to third with a single.
- 1:27:06Complete inning. Gave up five hits. All out two
- 1:27:11runs. Struck out two and walked none. Bob, what
- 1:27:15have you got in the scores? St. Louis 2 -0 on
- 1:27:21Dick Stewart's two -run homer. That's Washburn
- 1:27:23against Francis. Cincinnati scored two off Ron
- 1:27:27Pache in the top of the second. The Reds lead
- 1:27:29the Milwaukee Braves 2 -0. That's the first game
- 1:27:32of their Memorial Day doubleheader. They have
- 1:27:34gone six innings in Philadelphia. The Giants
- 1:27:36and Phillies tied at 1 -1. Mound due between
- 1:27:39Juan Marichal and Cal McClish. Roy Seavers homered
- 1:27:42in the fifth to tie up the game. They're underway
- 1:27:45at Wrigley Field. The Colt 45s did not score
- 1:27:48against Cal Coons in the first. Dean Stone pitching
- 1:27:51for Houston. In the American League, they're
- 1:27:56in the ninth inning now at Minneapolis with the
- 1:27:58Yankees leading the Minnesota Twins 6 -1. Bill
- 1:28:01Stafford hurling for the Yankees. Miranda on
- 1:28:03a relief now in the ninth inning. Johnny Blanchard
- 1:28:06hit a two -run homer. It'll be Washington playing
- 1:28:09at Kansas City. Chicago at Detroit in a doubleheader.
- 1:28:12Bazaard in the first game for the White Sox against
- 1:28:14Phil Regan. Cleveland playing at Baltimore. And
- 1:28:17in the third inning, Pedro Ramos and Al Leplow
- 1:28:21have hit home runs. That Cleveland ball club
- 1:28:22is really hitting home runs. So the Indians have
- 1:28:25moved out in front by at least three to nothing
- 1:28:27in the third inning at Baltimore. with home runs
- 1:28:30off Chuck Estrada, one by Ramos, the other by
- 1:28:33Al Leplo. In the other action in the American
- 1:28:36League, it'll be Boston playing at Los Angeles
- 1:28:38in a doubleheader on the West Coast. So that's
- 1:28:40the complete rundown on our scoreboard. Right
- 1:28:43here, Bob Moorhead, the big blind right -hander
- 1:28:46from LeMoyne, Pennsylvania, has been called in
- 1:28:48by Casey Stengel to try and cool off the red
- 1:28:51-hot Dodger bats. And as play resumes, here again
- 1:28:53is Ralph. Thank you, Bob. And the batter will
- 1:28:56be Tommy Davis. Bob Moorhead, a right -hander,
- 1:29:07will be making his 13th appearance. And he, too,
- 1:29:11has no record, no wins and no losses. Throw to
- 1:29:15first base, and Willie Davis dives back in. Moorhead
- 1:29:20has pitched 32 innings, giving up 33 hits, allowing
- 1:29:2324 runs, 18 of those earned. His first pitch
- 1:29:27to Tommy Davis is low outside, ball one. Bob
- 1:29:35Moorhead, the third pitcher used in the game
- 1:29:36by manager Casey Stengel. Jay Hook worked the
- 1:29:39first two, then Dave Hillman, now Bob. The right
- 1:29:49-hander back to the plate, a bouncing ball back
- 1:29:51to the mound. Moorhead goes to second, now to
- 1:29:53first, but the throw pulls Hodges off the bag
- 1:29:56and a run scores. Junior Gilliam coming in from
- 1:29:59third base and the score of the ball game now,
- 1:30:018 -0. Felix Mantia, in throwing to first base,
- 1:30:07pulled Hodges off the bag, which allowed Tommy
- 1:30:10Davis, the fast man, to get in. No error in the
- 1:30:12play, and the run is earned. So Tommy Davis,
- 1:30:22who leads the club and runs battered in, has
- 1:30:25picked up his 46. He's second in the National
- 1:30:28League to Cepeda. And the score is 8 -0, and
- 1:30:31the batters run fairly. Curveballs to Farrelly.
- 1:30:35He's fouled down in the dirt. Strike one. Farrelly
- 1:30:38hit his first major league home run of the 1962
- 1:30:40season in the third inning. He also has a triple
- 1:30:44to go along. He's had a perfect day. Two for
- 1:30:46two. to the left -handed batter with a curveball
- 1:31:05that drops over letter high. Strike two. No balls
- 1:31:09and two strikes. One out. Score eight to nothing.
- 1:31:13Dodgers. The two -strike pitch to Farrelly is
- 1:31:29inside. A ball. Farrelly started to go in the
- 1:31:32curve and then held up. Ball breaking off of
- 1:31:35the plate. One ball, two strikes. Tommy Davis
- 1:31:41at first base. Moorhead now tossing over to first
- 1:31:51base, but Davis gets back. One -two pitch to
- 1:32:00Fairley. Swung on and grounded down in the dirt
- 1:32:02again. So the count will stay at one ball and
- 1:32:04two strikes. And while we have time, we pause
- 1:32:07for station identification. This is WGY, the
- 1:32:12General Electric Station's connectivity 810 on
- 1:32:15your radio dial. Ralph Kiner along with Bob Murphy
- 1:32:23and Lindsey Nelson from the polar grounds. The
- 1:32:25score of the ball game 8 -0 in favor of the Dodgers.
- 1:32:28And they're batting here in the top of the fourth.
- 1:32:31One two pitch is low. Ball two. Two balls and
- 1:32:34two strikes. This is the longest batting streak
- 1:32:37of the season for any Dodgers. And during the
- 1:32:41stretch, he was 18 for 31. And he has raised
- 1:32:44his average from 136 to 320. The 2 -2 pitch to
- 1:32:53Farrelly. Lying in the center field of Bayton.
- 1:32:56Tommy Davis going to second now. Moves over to
- 1:32:59third base as... Hickman comes up for the ball
- 1:33:02and throws to Mantee at second. That puts runners
- 1:33:06at first and third with one out. And the batter
- 1:33:08is Frank Howard. Boy, this is a big man. He's
- 1:33:25bigger than Cliff Hartung was, and he was large.
- 1:33:28First pitch to Frank. Line into left center field.
- 1:33:32Base hit as Hickman goes over. Falls down. Going
- 1:33:35in the third base is Ron Fairley. Now Howard
- 1:33:37going for second. Now Fairley continues on home.
- 1:33:40And two runs scored. Tommy Davis going from third
- 1:33:46base and Fairley all the way from first. Howard
- 1:33:49hits one to left center field. And a goal as
- 1:33:53a two -base hit. 10 -0, and the batter is John
- 1:34:02Roseboro. One out, and Frank Howard out in second.
- 1:34:08Roseboro, left -handed batter, waiting now as
- 1:34:10Morehead returns to the plate. He hits the next
- 1:34:12pitch down to the second base of Mantia. Mantia,
- 1:34:14the first base for out number two, and moving
- 1:34:16over to third, Frank Howard. So two are down
- 1:34:24now, and the batter is Larry Burright. Larry
- 1:34:28Singel to center field and two times up today.
- 1:34:38Playing at second base, a right -handed batter.
- 1:34:41And the first pitch to him is a called strike,
- 1:34:44a slider over on the outside corner, letter high.
- 1:34:51Dodgers with two in the second, four in the third,
- 1:34:53and four here in the top of the fourth. Last
- 1:35:00ball at 2 -0, ball one. One ball and one strike.
- 1:35:18Now Moore heads back with a 1 -1 pitch. A swing
- 1:35:21and a foul tip into the catcher's glove. Strike
- 1:35:23two. For the ball game, the atmosphere here at
- 1:35:26the ballpark, just like a World Series. They
- 1:35:28had movie cameras, photographers, writers from
- 1:35:32all over. And manager Walt Alston saying, this
- 1:35:38certainly reminds me of 1959. One -two pitch
- 1:35:42is called, strike three. No more head strikes
- 1:35:44out for White. Got him looking to retire to side.
- 1:35:51In the inning for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Four
- 1:35:54runs on five hits. There were no errors. One
- 1:35:59man left in the score at the end of three and
- 1:36:02one half innings of play. The Los Angeles Dodgers
- 1:36:0510, the New York Mets nothing. Moving to the
- 1:36:13bottom half of the fourth inning with the Dodgers
- 1:36:15leading 10 to nothing and coming up to bat, Gil
- 1:36:17Hodges. Picks up a great aim wherever he plays,
- 1:36:29now in the batter's box. The ovation for Gill
- 1:36:31out in Los Angeles when he made his first appearance
- 1:36:33for the first time out of a Dodger uniform ever
- 1:36:36was certainly heartwarming. There's a strike
- 1:36:40call as Koufax comes back on the 1 -0 count.
- 1:36:42One ball, one strike. 1 -1 pitch to Gill as it's
- 1:36:52high in the air right down the left field line.
- 1:36:54Watching there is Tommy Davis. It's going to
- 1:36:57be a home run of its fair. It's called a home
- 1:36:59run. Gil Hodges crossing home plate with his
- 1:37:17367th home run. That one was on top of the roof,
- 1:37:21right on top of the foul ball. Now arguing at
- 1:37:24third base, Jim Gilliam and Georgetown boy Will.
- 1:37:28And Sandy Kovacs coming over to take a look right
- 1:37:32down the foul line. The tough part about the
- 1:37:36decision on that one is that the ball was in
- 1:37:39fair territory as it went down the line and the
- 1:37:41wind blowing towards left field curved it to
- 1:37:44where it hit on the roof it was. in foul territory.
- 1:37:48But as it went by, the foul line pulled. It was
- 1:37:53decided that the ball was a fair ball. The third
- 1:37:57base umpire, Bill Jachowski, signaling a home
- 1:38:00run for Gil Hodges. So the game now 10 -1 in
- 1:38:03favor of the Dodgers. And Gil now with 367 major
- 1:38:07league home runs. That's his sixth of the season.
- 1:38:12And now the batter is Jim Hickman, and he takes
- 1:38:15low for ball one. in the left field. Hickman
- 1:38:31rounding that first base. Now going for two.
- 1:38:34The throw by Tommy Davis. Offline and Hickman
- 1:38:36has a stand -up double. Two hits in a row and
- 1:38:49the New York Mets fans hear some 40 -some thousand
- 1:38:54finally getting a chance to cheer. And that's
- 1:38:58what they came out here for. And as you can tell
- 1:39:02right now, they're getting a good chance. Here's
- 1:39:05Felix Mantia. He takes goal, ball one. Charlie
- 1:39:14Neal has just come in from the clubhouse in center
- 1:39:17field, which means he has returned from Longview,
- 1:39:20Texas, attending the funeral of his uncle, who
- 1:39:24is very close to him. Coach Johnny Neal is now
- 1:39:27available for action. Line drive, the left field,
- 1:39:30a face hit. Tommy Davis there takes it on the
- 1:39:33first bounce, fires in to Wills and holds it
- 1:39:35at first base, Mantia. And a throw to first base
- 1:39:37gets by Farrelly. Going from third now, Jim Hickman
- 1:39:41is going to second base, Mantia. That'll be an
- 1:39:48error, Judge, the more he will. Hickman batted
- 1:39:54in as the runner had held up a third. And then
- 1:39:58after the throw got by at first base, as Wells
- 1:40:00tried to get Mantia after he rounded there, after
- 1:40:04the throw had gotten by thoroughly, Hickman came
- 1:40:06in from third. For Sammy Taylor, the catcher,
- 1:40:29it'll be Harry Chitty. Going to ballgame now,
- 1:40:3210 -2. A pinch hitter for the catcher, Sammy
- 1:41:01Taylor. And the first pitch to him is a fastball
- 1:41:03called a strike at the knee. Murray batting .333.
- 1:41:09Has eight hits and 24 times hit the plate. Wide
- 1:41:14-handed batter and a catcher on the slot. Now
- 1:41:17Koufax with a one -strike pitch. It's outside.
- 1:41:20Ball one. Finnegar Van Meisel warming up at the
- 1:41:27bullpen for the Mets. The on -deck batter is
- 1:41:32the pitcher Bob Moorhead. A 1 -1 pitch to Harry.
- 1:41:38One on, foul tip off the glove of John Roseboro.
- 1:41:41To the count now, one ball, two strikes. Felix
- 1:41:45Mangia out at second base. There's no one out.
- 1:41:50The Mets now with two runs in the bottom of the
- 1:41:52fourth inning. Off -counter back to Chidi with
- 1:42:02a curve that just misses up high. Ball two. Two
- 1:42:06balls and two strikes. Koufax back to the plate.
- 1:42:21A fastball. One on a miss. Chidi goes down swinging
- 1:42:25for strikeout number six by Sandy Koufax. One
- 1:42:29man is now out, and we'll see who they're going
- 1:42:31to send up. It's going to be Bob Moorhead to
- 1:42:39bat for himself. And sitting down now, out in
- 1:42:43the bullpen for the Mets, Finnegar Ben Mizell.
- 1:42:46So Bob Moorhead batting for himself. He's a right
- 1:42:48-handed batter. Sandy Koufax to Bob Moorhead.
- 1:43:10It's a fastball called strike one. Koufax has
- 1:43:16won six so far this year, losing only two. This
- 1:43:22is his first start against the Mets. Curveball
- 1:43:25that breaks right over the heart of the plate.
- 1:43:27Strike two. Big curve. No balls and two strikes
- 1:43:35to Bob Moorhead. Mantia out at second base and
- 1:43:38one out. And it fits back to the plate. A fastball.
- 1:43:41It's fouled away. So the Cavs will stay at 0
- 1:43:44-2. Mets with two runs in here in the bottom
- 1:43:51of the fourth inning. Now the left -hander back
- 1:44:03with a curveball. Swung on and missed. Strike
- 1:44:05three. Joe Moorhead goes down. He's the seventh
- 1:44:09strikeout victim of Sandy Koufax, and the batter
- 1:44:11now is Joe Christopher. Joe is last time up,
- 1:44:21fly deep to left field. He also has popped up
- 1:44:23to third, 0 for 2. His drive to left, chasing
- 1:44:28Tommy Davis, all the way back on the warning
- 1:44:31track, and deep, deep left field. Christopher
- 1:44:34playing in right field, bats from the right -hand
- 1:44:36side. Two men down now to score 10 -2 Dodgers,
- 1:44:42and the first pitch to Christopher, a big curveball,
- 1:44:44strike one called. Boy, this fella really rolls
- 1:44:49it off the top. Now Koufax looking at his runner.
- 1:45:03Back to the plate with a curve. It's in the center
- 1:45:05field. A base hit. Ante a rounding turn. Will
- 1:45:08score. The throw comes in the second base. The
- 1:45:11ball game now 10 -3. One of them a home run by
- 1:45:36Gil Hodges. And the batter is Helio Chacon. Helio
- 1:45:45singles to left center field in the third inning.
- 1:45:48He is one for one. He also has a walk to go along.
- 1:45:52A right -handed batter. Christopher first base
- 1:45:54not being held on. And the first pitch to Chacon.
- 1:45:56A fastball inside. Ball one. Koufax back to the
- 1:46:13plate with a low fastball. Ball two. And John
- 1:46:17Roseboro now walking halfway out to talk to Sandy
- 1:46:20Koufax. Koufax comes in, meets him halfway. and
- 1:46:42no strikes to Ilya Chacon with two outs in the
- 1:46:45bottom of the fourth. And the next pitch is high.
- 1:46:47Ball three. No action in the bullpen for the
- 1:46:58Dodgers. They lead by seven. But the Mets with
- 1:47:01a rally going in the fourth inning. The 3 -0
- 1:47:04pitch to Chacon. A fastball that screws strike
- 1:47:06one. For the count now, three balls and one strike.
- 1:47:12The on -deck batter is Cliff Cook. Chacon now
- 1:47:16looking twice for the sign. A hit -or -take sign
- 1:47:19from Salahemis. Elia Chacon, a runner at first,
- 1:47:27and the 3 -1 pitch is strike two. Chacon taking
- 1:47:31all the way as a full count at three balls and
- 1:47:33two strikes. Joe Christopher at first base will
- 1:47:37be moving on the pitch. Now Farrelly comes in
- 1:47:42to hold him on. Koufax looks at first, goes to
- 1:47:47the plate. Christopher runs. The ball is hit
- 1:47:50in the center field. A pace hit. Christopher
- 1:47:52going over to third base on the play. The throw
- 1:47:54comes in. The throw right at second. So now the
- 1:47:57runners are at first and third, and that brings
- 1:48:00out Walt Austin. Tits off of Sandy Koufax. And
- 1:48:18Walt Alston now talking to Sandy Koufax on the
- 1:48:22mound. And Ed Robuck is up in the bullpen for
- 1:48:32the Los Angeles Dodgers. Walt Alston, yesterday,
- 1:48:41said he thought he had the best team he's had
- 1:48:43in quite some time this year in the Dodgers.
- 1:48:46He figures the San Francisco Jazz to beat that.
- 1:48:50Also the Cincinnati Reds. But he feels this team
- 1:48:54can go all the way during the 1962 season. Now
- 1:49:00Alston going back to the dugout. He's effectively
- 1:49:04known as Smokey Alston. Was the first baseman
- 1:49:08in the minor leagues for many, many years. He
- 1:49:11was at that one time in the major leagues. And
- 1:49:14he was struck out by Laram Warnicke. Walt Alston.
- 1:49:20Now we're all set to go. Cliff Cook is the batter.
- 1:49:23The pitcher is Sandy Koufax. The Mets with runners
- 1:49:26at first and third. And the first pitch to Cook
- 1:49:28is popped up high in the air. Wills at shortstop
- 1:49:31is signaling for the ball. And he makes the catch
- 1:49:34to retire the time. In the inning, the New York
- 1:49:38Mets pick up three big runs. On five hits, there
- 1:49:43were no errors. Two men left in the score. Collection
- 1:49:47one error in the inning, and the score... The
- 1:49:51Los Angeles Dodgers, 10 runs on 12 hits. The
- 1:49:54New York Mets, three runs on seven. And now as
- 1:49:57we move along to the top of the fifth inning,
- 1:50:00once again, to tell you all about it, and I guess
- 1:50:04we've got a pretty good seat in this full house,
- 1:50:05is Bob Murphy. Thank you very much, Ralph. And
- 1:50:16now it is a 10 -3 ball game. The Mets breaking
- 1:50:19through against Sandy Koufax, and they hit Koufax
- 1:50:21hard. Walter Alston, after making a trip to the
- 1:50:24mound and staying out there about as long as
- 1:50:26he could to give Roebuck time to get ready. But
- 1:50:33Sandy got Cliff Cook on a high pop fly to retire
- 1:50:36the side, and now the one -up action subsides
- 1:50:38in the Dodger bullpen. We move along to the theft
- 1:50:43hunting, and for the Dodgers, They will have
- 1:50:45Sandy Koufax coming out to lead off. Eight men
- 1:50:53came up for the New York Mets. In the fourth
- 1:50:57inning, as they scored three runs on five hits
- 1:50:59with one error and two left on. Harry Chidi batted
- 1:51:02for Sammy Taylor, and now Harry stays in the
- 1:51:04game to catch Bob Moorhead. At the end of five
- 1:51:09and a half, Pittsburgh leading the St. Louis
- 1:51:11Cardinals 3 -1. At the end of three and a half,
- 1:51:14the Cincinnati Reds lead the Milwaukee Braves
- 1:51:16three to one. They're in the ninth inning in
- 1:51:19the first game in Philadelphia with the Giants
- 1:51:21leading the Phillies by a score of three to one.
- 1:51:26Houston four, the Cubs nothing at the end of
- 1:51:29two and a half. Now Sandy Koufax leading off
- 1:51:35against Bob Moorhead in the top of the fifth
- 1:51:37inning. Sandy hitting for the third time, he's
- 1:51:40over two. Head right in there for a call. Strike
- 1:51:43one. The day game at Minneapolis. The Yankees
- 1:51:48on a seven -hitter by Bill Stafford. Beat the
- 1:51:50Minnesota Twins 10 -1. Outside and low. One ball,
- 1:51:56one strike. Yankees breaking out. Got ten runs
- 1:51:59on 16 bases, including a two -run homer by Johnny
- 1:52:02Blanchard. Tigers two and the White Sox nothing
- 1:52:08at the end of two. Cleveland three, the Orioles
- 1:52:11nothing after four and a half. Pitch to Koufax,
- 1:52:15a ground ball past the mound to his right man,
- 1:52:18Pia. Felix up with it, takes the Hodges in time.
- 1:52:20Koufax is out. What a way nobody on now in the
- 1:52:27top of the fifth inning. And the hitter will
- 1:52:28be Maury Wills, the shortstop and leadoff batter.
- 1:52:32Maury has been up three times, singled twice
- 1:52:34to right field. And in the fourth inning, he
- 1:52:36stole second. He has 24th stolen base. So here's
- 1:52:41Maury Wells, who has stolen 24 bases, and the
- 1:52:44season is only about a fourth of the way along.
- 1:52:57Bob Moorhead, third pitcher used today by Casey.
- 1:53:00Wines and pitches. Inside at the knees. One ball
- 1:53:03and no strike. Now more head cranking up. The
- 1:53:18pitch to Maury Wills. A drive in the air to right
- 1:53:19field. Running back is Joe Christopher. He can't
- 1:53:22get it. It's beyond him and rolling back to the
- 1:53:24deepest point in right center field. Watch this
- 1:53:26when it may try to go all the way. Maury Wills
- 1:53:29is being waved around third. He's going to come
- 1:53:31in to score standing up without a throw. the
- 1:53:48park home run. In a hard line drive, Christopher
- 1:53:52running back into right center tried to catch
- 1:53:54the line drive by cutting over on it. Couldn't
- 1:53:57reach it and the ball then rolled to the deep
- 1:53:59point in right center beyond the bullpen. Maury
- 1:54:02Wells, who really flies, came in easily standing
- 1:54:06up with it inside the park homer. By the time
- 1:54:09Christopher could fire the ball back to Mantilla
- 1:54:11for a relay, he had no play. So the Dodgers lead
- 1:54:1511 -3 and the hitter is Jim Gilliam. Inside at
- 1:54:19lowest, ball one. That's the third home run in
- 1:54:21the game for the Dodgers. Next pitch to Gilliam,
- 1:54:32a swing and a miss. One ball, one strike. Gilliam
- 1:54:35has flied to left, drawn a walk, and singled
- 1:54:37a right, and Jim has scored two runs. Maury Wills
- 1:54:44now is three for four. The 1 -1 pitch, taken
- 1:54:49high by Gilliam, two balls and a strike. One
- 1:54:56of the few inside the park home runs I've ever
- 1:54:58seen where you could almost tell they had no
- 1:55:00chance at all to get him. 2 -1 pitch, right in
- 1:55:07there, a call strike, 2 -2 on Jim Gilliam. The
- 1:55:12Dodgers now have three hits, three runs of Bob
- 1:55:14Moorhead. They have a total of 11 runs, 13 hits
- 1:55:17in the game. Gilliam containing the bat around.
- 1:55:25In comes the pitch by Moorhead, a foul ball off
- 1:55:27the fist, back toward the screen, no play. Sensational
- 1:55:31crowd here at the polo grounds, every seat taken,
- 1:55:34and around the top of the upper deck and out
- 1:55:36in center field, up behind the bleachers, many
- 1:55:39are standing. Bob Moorhead pitching 2 -2. Breaking
- 1:55:51ball taken inside and low by Jim Gilliam, and
- 1:55:53the string is on 3 -2. Well, I don't know where
- 1:55:57you could possibly find a greater reception than
- 1:55:59the Mets have received. Mets coming home off
- 1:56:02an eight -game losing streak and not a seat to
- 1:56:04be found on the polo ground. The Dodgers have
- 1:56:07hit three home runs, Willie Davis, Ron Farrelly,
- 1:56:09and Maury Wills connecting, and Gil Hodges connected
- 1:56:12for the New York Mets. Gil now has 367. He's
- 1:56:17only two behind Ralph Kiner in the all -time
- 1:56:19home run derby. When he passes Kiner, he will
- 1:56:22have hit more home runs than any right -hander
- 1:56:23in National League history. Inside, it's ball
- 1:56:26four, and Gilliam walks. Jim Gilliam walks on
- 1:56:36three and two. That brings up Willie Davis. Willie
- 1:56:39has grounded out second to first. belted a long
- 1:56:43two -run homer in the upper deck and right center,
- 1:56:45and single to right field, two for three. Willie
- 1:56:52Davis off to a great start. Ground ball passed
- 1:56:56the pitcher towards second. Mantilla goes over,
- 1:56:58flips to Chacon, fourth at second base. Close
- 1:57:01play at second. Mantilla had to go to his right
- 1:57:03on a rather slow grounder, and when he got to
- 1:57:06it, all he could do was just flip it in the same
- 1:57:08motion to Elio Chacon, and they forced Jim Gilliam.
- 1:57:15Now there are two away, and the hitter is the
- 1:57:17cleanup batter, Tommy Davis. Tommy has fouled
- 1:57:20out to Hodges, drawn a walk and scored a run,
- 1:57:22reached on a fielder's choice but knocked in
- 1:57:24a run, and then scored again. 11 -3, Dodgers
- 1:57:30leading, we're in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:57:37There goes the runner, swing and a miss, the
- 1:57:39peg by Chidi, the slide, he is saved, but second
- 1:57:42with a stolen base. Willie Davis steals second.
- 1:57:56Second stolen base in the game for the Dodgers.
- 1:57:59They've stolen 52 bases in 47 games. Willie Davis
- 1:58:03is the runner -up on the Dodgers. Tamari Wills,
- 1:58:05and that for Willie, is his 12th stolen base
- 1:58:07of the year. One strike count on Tommy Davis.
- 1:58:15Willie Davis on second with two men down. One
- 1:58:20run in in the fifth inning, and that was on the
- 1:58:21inside of the park, home run to right center
- 1:58:23by Maury Wills. There goes Willie to third, a
- 1:58:26ground smash up the middle for a base hit. Tommy
- 1:58:28Davis singles to center. That scores Willie Davis,
- 1:58:31and the Dodgers now go in front 12 -3. Willie
- 1:58:34Davis was running on the pitch. He broke for
- 1:58:37third, but Tommy singles to center, and he could
- 1:58:39virtually... Slow up to a trot, a rounding third
- 1:58:42and coming in. So Tommy Davis has his second
- 1:58:46RBI of the game. That gives him 47 for the year.
- 1:58:49He's the runner -up to Orlando Cepeda. The Dodgers,
- 1:58:57a sizzling hot ball club. They have hit each
- 1:59:00of the three pitchers that Casey has had in the
- 1:59:01game. Ron Fairley, the batter, and he pops one
- 1:59:05up to short right field. Mantia gliding into
- 1:59:08shallow right. Turns around and makes the catch.
- 1:59:10The bat is out. In the fifth inning, the Dodgers
- 1:59:14add two more runs. On two hits. No errors. One
- 1:59:22left on. So we've come halfway at the end of
- 1:59:25four and a half innings. The score now is the
- 1:59:27Dodgers 12 and the New York Mets 3. Now we'll
- 1:59:38have a change for the Dodgers. Andy Carey will
- 1:59:41rest Jim Gilliam at third. Gilliam was one for
- 1:59:53two. Through two walks, Jim was on three times
- 1:59:56out of four. Andy Carey now playing third in
- 2:00:00the last of the fifth innings. And the banner
- 2:00:02is Frank Thomas. Frank drew an intentional walk
- 2:00:05to load the bases with one down in the first.
- 2:00:07He then took a called third strike in the third
- 2:00:09inning after hitting several real shots that
- 2:00:11were foul. Koufax winds and pitches. Swing and
- 2:00:15a miss and a breaking ball. Sandy Koufax with
- 2:00:19that blazing fastball and he has a great curveball.
- 2:00:23Koufax has walked two, struck out seven. Allowed
- 2:00:26three runs, seven hits. After Andy winding, here's
- 2:00:33his pitch on the way. Another curve, and it's
- 2:00:35over. Strike. Gil Hodges on deck, and then Jim
- 2:00:42Hickman. Mets broke through against Kofax for
- 2:00:46five hits in the fourth inning. A check swing,
- 2:00:48slow grounder, racing forward is Andy Carey.
- 2:00:50He's up with it, throws on to Farrelly, in time,
- 2:00:53and Thomas is out. Thomas didn't mean to hit
- 2:00:57that one. He was trying to hold up. But Andy
- 2:00:59Carey cut across the edge of the infield draft
- 2:01:01going to his left to throw him out. Gil Hodges
- 2:01:05coming up. Gil hit one down the left field line
- 2:01:16and way up high for a home run in the fourth
- 2:01:18inning. Gil now has one for two. That was his
- 2:01:22sixth home run of the season. Despite the fact
- 2:01:26that Gil... Has been held a part -time action
- 2:01:28with an ailing knee. Ball one. Knee is very sore.
- 2:01:33It bothers him a lot. It's hard for him to stride
- 2:01:35properly, but nonetheless, Gillis stayed over
- 2:01:37that 300 mark. Koufax out of his wind at the
- 2:01:43pitch. Fastball in there for a call strike. One
- 2:01:45ball, one strike. Last of the fifth inning, Dodgers
- 2:01:4912 and the Mets 3. Now Sandy Koufax winds and
- 2:02:00pitches a ground ball toward the hole. Terry
- 2:02:01cuts it off, going to his left. Now throws in
- 2:02:04time and Gillis out. Now before Jim Hickman comes
- 2:02:08up to hit, let's pause for station identification.
- 2:02:11This is WGY, the General Electric Station's connectivity
- 2:02:14810 on your radio dial. Bob Murphy with Lindsey
- 2:02:25Nelson and Ralph Kanner from the polo grounds,
- 2:02:27last half of the fifth inning. Jim Hickman laced
- 2:02:30a double to left field his last time up. A fly
- 2:02:33ball high in the air, not too deep to right center.
- 2:02:35Willie Davis calling for it in right center,
- 2:02:38and Willie has it to retire the side. So the
- 2:02:41Mets are out in order in their half of the fifth
- 2:02:43inning with no runs, no hits, no errors, none
- 2:02:45left on. And now five innings complete to score
- 2:02:48the Dodgers 12 and the New York Mets 3. Now it's
- 2:02:56the sixth inning at the photo ground. Rod Keneal
- 2:02:59will replace Gil Hodge as the first base for
- 2:03:01the remainder of the ballgame. Gil, of course,
- 2:03:05playing on a very sore knee, and the Mets treading
- 2:03:08by nine runs. Casey wants to give Gil a chance
- 2:03:10to rest the remainder of the game, hoping perhaps
- 2:03:12to be able to play him in the second game. Frank
- 2:03:16Howard leading off against Bob Moorhead at the
- 2:03:18sixth inning. Howard has really ripped the ball.
- 2:03:21Two for three. The only time they got him out,
- 2:03:23he hit a line drive to right field. He's big
- 2:03:27enough to go bear hunting with a buggy whip.
- 2:03:29Here's the wind that pitched to him. Blazer in
- 2:03:31there for a call strike one. Howard was married
- 2:03:34in a batting slump about two weeks ago, but he
- 2:03:36came out of it. And since he came out of it,
- 2:03:38he has been getting a rash of hits in just about
- 2:03:40every game. More hits pitched to him as a breaking
- 2:03:45ball outside and low. One ball, one strike. Howard
- 2:03:54came into the game hitting a 3 -17, and he's
- 2:03:56two for three. Bob Moore has won one pitch to
- 2:04:02Howard, a swing and a miss. He really gave that
- 2:04:04one the big sweeping swing. One ball and two
- 2:04:07strikes. The Dodgers have lacked for anything.
- 2:04:13With all the talent that they have assembled,
- 2:04:15it has been a right -hand home run power. Swing
- 2:04:19and a miss. He struck him out. Bob Moorhead stands
- 2:04:23Frank Howard. A lot of baseball men think that
- 2:04:31one of these days Frank Howard will break out
- 2:04:33and hit them. A lot of home runs. One out and
- 2:04:41nobody on now in the sixth inning. The batter
- 2:04:43is Johnny Roseboro. Johnny doubled to right center
- 2:04:46field in the second with a tremendous drive.
- 2:04:48Ball that landed on the warning path and deep
- 2:04:50right center and bounced up into the crowd, something
- 2:04:52you might see about once a year. Ground ball
- 2:04:55slashed to short. Chacon to his right. Plancy
- 2:04:57spikes. The long peg in time to Rod Caneo. Two
- 2:05:02up and two set aside by Bob Moorhead. I don't
- 2:05:08know where you're going to find any flashier
- 2:05:10play than Elio Chacon has given the New York
- 2:05:13Mets. Elio, a young ball player with tremendous
- 2:05:21desire. Casey feels that he's going to develop
- 2:05:25into a real good one. Outside and low to Larry
- 2:05:29Burright, the rookie second baseman. One ball
- 2:05:31and no strikes. Burright has one for three. Single
- 2:05:34to right center field in the third inning. Pitched
- 2:05:40by Moorhead. A line drive. Knocked down by Camille.
- 2:05:43He picks it up. Nobody there to cover. And so
- 2:05:46Burr ride us on. Moore had undoubtedly thought
- 2:05:49the ball was going into right field for a base
- 2:05:51hit and didn't break off the mound to cover.
- 2:05:53Canelo left the ground to jump high, knocked
- 2:05:55it down with his first baseman's mitt, picked
- 2:05:58it up and had no one to throw to. Whether he
- 2:06:03could have thrown him out or not is problematical.
- 2:06:05It'll be an error charge to ride Canelo on the
- 2:06:07play. We'll double check the scoring. It actually
- 2:06:18has not been officially posted, so let's hold
- 2:06:20off. It is an error on the play charge to Keneal.
- 2:06:27Mandy Koufax up, starts after it, then holds
- 2:06:30up at the strike. Ball actually fooled Keneal
- 2:06:37a little bit. It was not quite as high as he
- 2:06:39thought it was going to be. It was hit hard by
- 2:06:41Burr Wright. A throw to first, and not in time.
- 2:06:45Rod Caneel has been a real handyman for the New
- 2:06:48York Mets. He's played every position in the
- 2:06:50infield and also been in the outfield. A throw
- 2:06:53to first, he sprawls back in first safely. Swing
- 2:07:03and a miss, strike two to Sandy Koufax. Sandy
- 2:07:060 for 3, has grounded out third to first, been
- 2:07:09struck out and grounded out second to first.
- 2:07:13Dodgers 12 runs on 14 hits. The New York Mets
- 2:07:15three runs on seven hits. Bob Moorhead working
- 2:07:27in relief. The two -strike pitch. Strike three.
- 2:07:29He got him. Koufax knew it. Sandy started after
- 2:07:32it, and then he held up. No runs, no hits. One
- 2:07:37error, one left on. And now at the end of five
- 2:07:40and a half, the score. The Los Angeles Dodgers,
- 2:07:4212. And the New York Mets, 3. If your filtered
- 2:07:46cigarette is tasting too strong, don't you sometimes
- 2:07:49wonder if your brand is wrong? Well, Viceroy
- 2:07:52tastes the way it's like a filtered cigarette
- 2:07:54to taste. Not too strong. Not too light. Viceroy's
- 2:07:59got it. The taste that's right. That's right.
- 2:08:02That's right. Norm Sherry takes over behind the
- 2:08:12plate, replacing Johnny Roseboro as the game
- 2:08:14goes down to the last half of the sixth inning.
- 2:08:17Walter Austin making a second change in the game.
- 2:08:19In the fifth inning, he put Andy Carey in to
- 2:08:21relieve Jim Gilliam. Meninger Ben Mizell continues
- 2:08:27to warm up in the bullpen for the New York Mets.
- 2:08:29The Mets will have the tail end of their batting
- 2:08:31order coming up. Here in the last of the sixth
- 2:08:34inning with Felix Mantilla leading off against
- 2:08:36Andy Koufax. Sandy's pitch on the way is inside
- 2:08:41ball one. Felix got a base hit his last time
- 2:08:44up. Mentea has been over the 300 mark just about
- 2:08:52all year long. Now Sandy has his sign from Sherry,
- 2:09:03the wind -up and touch. A drive in the air to
- 2:09:05left field. It's fairly deep. Back goes Tommy
- 2:09:07Davis. He has room and makes the catch on the
- 2:09:10warning pass. Ball was well hit by Mantilla,
- 2:09:15and Davis back on the warning pass right in front
- 2:09:18of the left field wall grabbed it. One out and
- 2:09:22nobody on. That'll bring up Harry Chidi for his
- 2:09:24second time at bat. Harry came up to hit for
- 2:09:26Sandy Taylor. In the fourth inning, it was fanned
- 2:09:29by Koufax. Blazer right in there. Call strike
- 2:09:38one. Next pitch by Koufax. Foul tip. He just
- 2:09:51got a piece of that one on the count. Strike
- 2:09:53two. Early on, last half of the sixth inning,
- 2:10:11Dodgers leading 12 -3. Curve is fouled into the
- 2:10:16plate and coming back out of play over toward
- 2:10:18the Dodger dugout. So the count stays at strike
- 2:10:20two on Harry Chidi. Koufax winding the pitch
- 2:10:35on the way. Swing and a miss. He struck him out.
- 2:10:38He got him with a breaking ball, and that's for
- 2:10:39Fandy Koufax as his eighth strikeout of the game.
- 2:10:44So Fandy now is taking dead aim on Tenor Moore
- 2:10:47in the game, which he has already accomplished
- 2:10:49three times this year. Bob Moore had coming out
- 2:10:59to hit. This will be the second time up for Bob.
- 2:11:02He was struck out in the fourth inning by Koufax.
- 2:11:10A high pop foul. Norm Sherry flipping the mask
- 2:11:13to the side, trailing back toward the Dodger
- 2:11:15dugout under it. He has it for the out. Side
- 2:11:18retired in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 2:11:20No runs, no hits, no errors, none left on. Very
- 2:11:24strong inning for Koufax. After giving up five
- 2:11:26hits in the fourth inning, he has come back to
- 2:11:28set down seven straight hitters. And now at the
- 2:11:31end of six, the score is the Los Angeles Dodgers
- 2:11:3312 and the New York Mets 3. And now coming on
- 2:11:38to... Follow all the action for you the remainder
- 2:11:40of the way, a man who always gives you a good
- 2:11:42call of a ballgame, Lindsey Nelson. Thanks very
- 2:11:46much, Bob Murphy. We'll be going here to the
- 2:11:54top half of the seventh inning. Waiting for action
- 2:12:06to resume, here's a sports bulletin at Indianapolis
- 2:12:08today. Roger Ward won the Indianapolis 500. That's
- 2:12:13the second time that Roger Ward has won, and
- 2:12:15he set a new time record today. He won in 1959
- 2:12:18also. He took the lead from Farnelli Jones shortly
- 2:12:21after the 300 -mile mark and went on to win.
- 2:12:25Roger Ward is the winner of the famed Indianapolis
- 2:12:29500. In the top half of the seventh inning here,
- 2:12:40the Los Angeles Dodgers will have the head of
- 2:12:42the batting order up. Maury Wills, Andy Carey,
- 2:12:45and Willie Davis. Defensively, the New York Mets
- 2:12:49now have Rod Kinneal at first base, Felix Manti
- 2:12:52at second, Elio Chacon at short, and Cliff Cook
- 2:12:54at third. Mike Thomas on the left, Jim Hickman
- 2:12:58in center, Joe Christopher on right. Harry Chidi
- 2:13:01is the catcher, and Bob Moorhead is the pitcher.
- 2:13:12Switch hitter batting left. And pitches in there
- 2:13:16for a called strike. Wills has three base hits
- 2:13:23today. He's three for four. Pitch is low for
- 2:13:31the ball. One and one to count through Murray
- 2:13:34Wills. The Dodgers are leading here by a score
- 2:13:37of 12 -3. Playing a ground ball to the right
- 2:13:50side. Taken by Mancia. He plays up to Camille
- 2:13:52in time and he's out. One away and Andy Carey
- 2:13:58is coming up. This is Carey's first time up.
- 2:14:05He was brought on here to relieve Jim Gilliam.
- 2:14:07Carey, of course, very familiar to New York baseball
- 2:14:09fans. He played a lot of years at third base
- 2:14:11for the New York Yankees. Bob Moorhead is the
- 2:14:15third pitcher of the day and his first game of
- 2:14:17doubleheader for the New York Mets. Fitch goes
- 2:14:20higher for a ball. Fitch is in there for a called
- 2:14:37strike to Andy Carey. This afternoon, in case
- 2:14:45you have joined us along the way, the New York
- 2:14:46Mets loaded up the bases in the bottom half of
- 2:14:48the first inning, but could not manage to push
- 2:14:50across a run. So the Dodgers came on to the top
- 2:14:53of the second and got two, and then the Dodgers
- 2:14:55were off to the races. They got four in the top
- 2:14:57of the third, and they added four more in the
- 2:14:59top of the fourth to make it ten runs. But the
- 2:15:01Mets battled back, and in the bottom half of
- 2:15:03the fourth inning, the Mets pushed across three
- 2:15:05runs. The Dodgers coming right back in the top
- 2:15:08of the fifth to get two more to make it 12 -3,
- 2:15:10and that's where we stand right now. The Dodgers
- 2:15:13have 14 hits and the Nets have seven up to right
- 2:15:16now. Andy Carey, a right -hand batter, has the
- 2:15:23plate. Bob Moorhead looking in for a sign from
- 2:15:26Harry Chidi. Wines and fires and has a swing
- 2:15:29and a fly ball to right field. Joe Christopher
- 2:15:31will have a long run. He's still coming over
- 2:15:33near the line. And he cannot hold it. It's a
- 2:15:36fair ball. Going to second is Andy Carey. The
- 2:15:39ball is fired in and holding at second is Carey.
- 2:15:41Christopher had the long run. He did get a glove
- 2:15:44on it at the line, but could not hang on. As
- 2:15:48it dropped in, and Andy Carey pulled up at second
- 2:15:50base. It is a base hit. It is scored as a double
- 2:15:53for Andy Carey. It would have been a tremendous
- 2:15:57catch if Christopher had managed to pull it off
- 2:15:59because he had the long run on the right -hand
- 2:16:01batter. The ball was right down the line, was
- 2:16:04touched in fair territory. And that will bring
- 2:16:10up Willie Davis. Davis is two for four. He's
- 2:16:15had a home run and a single, and he's driven
- 2:16:16in three runs here today. Coming up now with
- 2:16:19a runner at second base and one man out. Here's
- 2:16:26the pitch to Davis. It goes high for a ball.
- 2:16:29Greg Malevy is coaching at first for the Dodgers,
- 2:16:31and Leo DeRocher is in the coaching box at third
- 2:16:34for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The very place where
- 2:16:38he stood. The afternoon he was managing the New
- 2:16:41York Giants and saw Bobby Thompson. Hit that
- 2:16:44home run in 1951 into the lower deck of the left
- 2:16:47field stands to win the pennant for his Giants.
- 2:16:49And if you recall, Eddie Steinke left the bench
- 2:16:52and went right down and jumped right up on top
- 2:16:53of him as he stood there and rode him all the
- 2:16:56way to the plate. There's a swing and a fly ball
- 2:17:00to the left. Frank Thomas with the sunglasses
- 2:17:02down moves over. Takes it. No advance by Kerry
- 2:17:06at second base. Willie Davis reached out there
- 2:17:08and punched that one to left. To a way around
- 2:17:11the second, and Tommy Davis coming up. And seeing
- 2:17:14DeRocha there in the coaching box at third reminds
- 2:17:16us, of course, that the old -timers game will
- 2:17:18be held at the Polo Grounds on July 14th. Players
- 2:17:21of the old Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers who participated
- 2:17:23in that dramatic pennant playoff in 1951 are
- 2:17:26being invited. Bobby Thompson has accepted. Ralph
- 2:17:28Franca has accepted. Leo will be here because
- 2:17:31the Mets play the Dodgers that day. Duke Snyder
- 2:17:33will be here. Of course, Gil Hodges will be here.
- 2:17:36They'll play a two -inning game before the regular
- 2:17:38games. July 14th. Mark that one on your calendar.
- 2:17:41As a pitch to Tommy Davis. It goes high for a
- 2:17:43ball. This is the longest winning streak that
- 2:17:48the Dodgers have ever had since they left Brooklyn
- 2:17:50and went to Los Angeles. This is popped up to
- 2:17:59the right side. Felix Mantia going out into short
- 2:18:02right field, shading his eyes with the glove,
- 2:18:03waits for it to come down and takes it to the
- 2:18:05out. That retires the side. So in the top of
- 2:18:08the seventh, the Dodgers got no runs on one hit,
- 2:18:10no errors and one left. And at the end of six
- 2:18:14and one -half innings of play at the Polo Grounds
- 2:18:16in New York, the score is the Los Angeles Dodgers
- 2:18:1912 and the New York Mets 3. Well, folks, the
- 2:18:23Mets may be New York's brand -new team, but they've
- 2:18:26got a few famous New York names going for them,
- 2:18:28as you know. New York baseball fans certainly
- 2:18:31are familiar with many of the well -known names
- 2:18:33from the past, such as Gil Hodges. And what about
- 2:18:38Rheingold Beer? Now, there's a famous New York
- 2:18:41name, Rheingold, the largest -selling beer in
- 2:18:44town, year after year after year. Why is Rheingold
- 2:18:48so popular? Because it's more refreshing, naturally.
- 2:18:52And why is it more naturally refreshing? Because
- 2:18:55it's dry. That's right. Dry tells you why Rheingold
- 2:18:59has a taste all its own. It tells you that Rheingold
- 2:19:03is brewed the long, slow, costly way to taste
- 2:19:06brisk and bright and clean, clear through. Why
- 2:19:09not try a glass of Rheingold along with the game
- 2:19:12and see that there is a difference, a difference
- 2:19:15you can really taste. You'll join the millions
- 2:19:18who already say, my beer is Rheingold. The driver.
- 2:19:26And now, in order to allow our stations to identify
- 2:19:29themselves, we pause now for station identification.
- 2:19:33This is WGY, the General Electric Station, Schenectady
- 2:19:36810, on your radio dial. This is Lindsey Nelson
- 2:19:46with Ralph Kanner and Bob Murphy at the Polo
- 2:19:48Ground. Where the Mets are coming up in the bottom
- 2:19:50half of the seventh inning, leading out for the
- 2:19:51top of the batting order, right -hand batter
- 2:19:53Joe Christopher. Sandy Koufax winds and fires,
- 2:19:56and the pitch is low for a ball. Koufax, the
- 2:20:00strikeout king of the National League, has eight
- 2:20:02strikeouts to his credit thus far in the six
- 2:20:04innings that he has worked. Pitch is high for
- 2:20:14a ball. After the Dodgers scored ten runs when
- 2:20:18the Mets pushed across three and had a couple
- 2:20:19of runners on in the bottom half of the fourth,
- 2:20:21manager Walter Olsen came out to the mound to
- 2:20:25talk to Koufax, and he had Ed Robux going in
- 2:20:28the bullpen at that time. Here's a pitch in there
- 2:20:30for a golf strike for Christopher. It's two and
- 2:20:32one. Christopher Singler driving a run in the
- 2:20:41bottom half of the fourth. Otherwise, he's 0
- 2:20:42for 2. He makes him 1 for 3 for the day. Playing
- 2:20:47a drive, going into left field for a base hit.
- 2:20:49Christopher gets his second hit. Down on one
- 2:20:52knee, Tommy Davis comes up with the ball, relays
- 2:20:54it in. And Christopher is on at first with a
- 2:20:57sharp single to left field. Elio Chacon coming
- 2:21:00up. He's been up three times. He's been on base
- 2:21:02all three times. He walked me singles wide. Now
- 2:21:05umpire Ed Soudal asks Koufax to let him see the
- 2:21:08ball. And Soudal walks about halfway to the mound
- 2:21:10to receive the shot. Going to throw that one
- 2:21:12out and gives another ball out there to Sandy
- 2:21:14Koufax. This crowd came to enjoy the baseball
- 2:21:24game, and as you can hear, they are enjoying
- 2:21:27it. The Dodgers lead by a score of 12 -3, but
- 2:21:30there's noise and enthusiasm aplenty here, which
- 2:21:33is inside for Ball. It's in there for Carl Sykes.
- 2:21:54Chacon watched it over. He choked up on that
- 2:21:56bet just a little bit. Cliff Cook now moves him
- 2:21:59beyond that circle, kneeling there. It's 2 -1
- 2:22:11now. The counter, Elio Chacon. That pitch is
- 2:22:26taken high for Baum. Three balls and one strike
- 2:22:30now to Elio Chacon as he turned and walked out
- 2:22:32of the batter's box. Looks down to Salahemis,
- 2:22:37the coach at third. See what he's doing on the
- 2:22:413 -1. He had him taken on 3 -1 a few months before.
- 2:22:43Elio's got a good eye. It's in there for a call
- 2:22:51strike. He had him taken again. It's 3 -2 now.
- 2:22:54Nobody out, and Joe Christopher is the baserunner
- 2:22:56at first. So once again, there's action in the
- 2:23:02bullpen for the Los Angeles Dodgers. With a 12
- 2:23:07-3 lead, Roebuck up and throwing the pitches
- 2:23:10high of all four. He walked in. Christopher was
- 2:23:12running on the pitch. Chacon has been on base
- 2:23:16four straight times today. That is the third
- 2:23:20walk issued by Kovac. First baseman Ron Fairley
- 2:23:24walking over to the mound to talk to Sandy Koufax.
- 2:23:27As Cliff Cook comes around, ready to step into
- 2:23:29the batter's box. Cook single in the first inning.
- 2:23:32Struck out and popped to short. He is one for
- 2:23:35three. Murray Wilson short is coming to the mound
- 2:23:45also. Roebuck is up and throwing in the bullpen
- 2:23:50for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Norm Sherry, the
- 2:23:52catcher, turns and looks into the dugout where
- 2:23:54manager Walter Alston is standing hands -on hips
- 2:23:56at the corner of the dugout. The oldest manager
- 2:23:59in the National League in point of continuous
- 2:24:01service with one ball club. Now this is nobody
- 2:24:04out for the match. Cook steps in, steps out,
- 2:24:07steps back in. Let's enter Sandy Koufax. Looking
- 2:24:13in to get a shot from catcher Norm Sherry. Runners
- 2:24:21leading. Here's the pitch. And it's low for Ball.
- 2:24:26Jerry calls time. Walks out toward the mound.
- 2:24:30Andy Carey, the third baseman, comes into the
- 2:24:32mound. Again to check with pitcher Sandy Koufax.
- 2:24:36Giving up a single to Christopher. And a walk
- 2:24:38to Elio Chacon. Taking the mask off now. Umpire
- 2:24:46Ed Sudol says, let's break it up, fellas, and
- 2:24:48get back to the ball game. This is the first
- 2:24:50game of a doubleheader schedule here at the Polo
- 2:24:53Gons on this Memorial Day. One ball and no strikes.
- 2:25:04The shot is took. The crowd is alive here at
- 2:25:06the Polo Gons in the bottom half of the seventh
- 2:25:08inning. This is a fastball. Blazed in there.
- 2:25:11Taken for call. Strike one. It's one and one.
- 2:25:14Mike Thomas is in the on -deck circle for the
- 2:25:16New York Mets. The swing and a fly ball to left
- 2:25:28field. Willie Davis, the center fielder, moves
- 2:25:31over. Tommy moves over. Both have called. Tommy
- 2:25:33waves him off and takes it down. No advance.
- 2:25:37First Willie Davis called, and then Tommy waved
- 2:25:39him off and took it himself out in front of the
- 2:25:40bullpen. Took a slide to left. One away. Runners
- 2:25:44holding it first and second. And Mike Thomas
- 2:25:45coming up. Mike walks, struck out, and grounded
- 2:25:49out. Nothing for two in a walk. Thomas facing
- 2:25:59Jalessi Sandy -Sofak. Swing and a foul ball coming
- 2:26:11back. Norm Sherry is giving it a run, hoping
- 2:26:13for a play. He gets back to the barrier, but
- 2:26:15doesn't have one. It's off the screen. Coach
- 2:26:18Leo DeRocher of the Los Angeles Dodgers up on
- 2:26:20the top step of the dugout. Observing the field
- 2:26:26of play. Coach Salahima for the New York Mets
- 2:26:29leaves the coaching lounge at third. Move out
- 2:26:32a step or two and yell something to Joe Christopher,
- 2:26:34his baserunner at second. Elio Chacon is the
- 2:26:37baserunner at first. Plenty of speed on the bases
- 2:26:39for the New York Mets here in the bottom half
- 2:26:40of the seventh inning. Strike one count to Frank
- 2:26:44Thomas. We want a hit is the cry that's going
- 2:26:50up from the fans here at the polo ground. Now
- 2:26:53the swings and fouls it down past Sully. He misjudges
- 2:26:56it. And Sully wisely waves at that one as it
- 2:26:59passes by. That's sort of a smash to take barehanded.
- 2:27:03Two -strike countdown. is scheduled to go for
- 2:27:19the Mets in the second game today, and Johnny
- 2:27:21Padres is scheduled to pitch for the Los Angeles
- 2:27:23Dodgers. Thomas takes it high, took the stride,
- 2:27:38but didn't unleash the bat. It's one and two.
- 2:27:50The robot continues to throw in the bullpen for
- 2:27:52the Dodgers. All is quiet in the Mets bullpen
- 2:27:56at this time. With one away, the Mets have runners
- 2:28:02at first and second. Go back to fish to Thomas.
- 2:28:06One run has a drive down the left of the line.
- 2:28:08And it is going one hop to the wall. One run
- 2:28:12has scored. Chacon is at third. He is held up
- 2:28:15there. Thomas pulls up at second base. with a
- 2:28:19drive down the left field line. He keeps his
- 2:28:21consecutive game hitting streak alive at 18 straight
- 2:28:23games now. Mike Thomas has hit safely at 18 consecutive
- 2:28:28games. He blasted Utlin down the line to drive
- 2:28:33and a run. That will bring up Rod Caneel. Makes
- 2:28:45the score 12 -4. That is the second and third.
- 2:28:51One man out, and Keneal is coming up for his
- 2:28:53first time in this game. He came in to relieve
- 2:28:55Gil Hodges. Hodges, of course, is troubled by
- 2:28:58a knee condition. And with the Mets trailing,
- 2:29:02and the ball again, Keneal was inserted to relieve
- 2:29:04him at first base. Keneal watches high for a
- 2:29:06ball. This is a rookie who played his way onto
- 2:29:09the squad at spring training in St. Petersburg,
- 2:29:11and then came on to... of foul balls, we started
- 2:29:26to say Canelo came on to set an amazing record
- 2:29:29as a pinch runner, bringing in the tying run
- 2:29:33and the winning run on numerous occasions. The
- 2:29:36game came to be regarded as something of a lucky
- 2:29:38piece for the New York Mets. One and one is the
- 2:29:46count to Canelo at the plate. As the right -hand
- 2:29:49batter faces left -hander Sandy Kofai. Action
- 2:29:54is stopped in the Dodger bullpen as Obak watches
- 2:29:56the action at the plate. Here's a swing and a
- 2:29:57foul ball. Back onto the screen. It's one and
- 2:30:00two now. Jim Hickman is on deck for the Mets.
- 2:30:09The Mets hang in there battling back here. They
- 2:30:11pushed across one run in the bottom half of the
- 2:30:13seventh inning. Strikeout number nine for Sandy
- 2:30:35Koufax. Run is holding at second and third. And
- 2:30:40Jim Hickman, right -hand batter, is coming up.
- 2:31:02into today's ballgame, leading the majors in
- 2:31:04strikeouts with 183 innings. And he has, coming
- 2:31:08into the ballgame, 1 ,052 strikeouts and 1 ,031
- 2:31:11lifetime National League innings. Here's a pitch
- 2:31:18in there for a called strike. The 18 consecutive
- 2:31:29game hitting streak by Frank Thomas is the longest
- 2:31:32in the National League this year. Great flood
- 2:31:34of the St. Louis Cardinals hit safely in 17 consecutive
- 2:31:36games. There's a swing and the ball is popped
- 2:31:39up out in front of the plate. Now Norm Sherry
- 2:31:42chases it over to foul territory, backed up by
- 2:31:44Koufax, and Norm Sherry makes the catch of the
- 2:31:47foul pop -off to batter Hickman to retire the
- 2:31:48side. In the bottom half of the seventh inning,
- 2:31:51the New York Mets got one run on two hits. There
- 2:31:55were no errors and two men left. And at the end
- 2:31:57of seven full innings of play at the Polo Grounds,
- 2:31:59the score is the Los Angeles Dodgers 12 and the
- 2:32:02New York Mets 4. So now we'll take a look at
- 2:32:05scores of other games. At the end of eight innings
- 2:32:09of play in Pittsburgh, Pilots still lead the
- 2:32:12St. Louis Cardinals 3 -1. Earl Fatch has started.
- 2:32:14He's still going in there for Pittsburgh. Ray
- 2:32:17Washburn started for the Cardinals. Ed Baroda
- 2:32:19in the fifth and Don Ferresi in the seventh.
- 2:32:21Nick Stewart over to the first inning with one
- 2:32:23on. The end of five innings in Milwaukee. The
- 2:32:27Reds and the Braves are tied 3 -3. O'Toole against
- 2:32:29Pichet. Robinson homing in the second with one
- 2:32:31on for Cincinnati. Frank Robinson. In Philadelphia,
- 2:32:36going to the bottom of the tenth. The Giants
- 2:32:39and the Phillies are still tied 3 -3. Juan Marichal
- 2:32:42for San Francisco. For the Phillies, Sal McLeish
- 2:32:46started. Balsher in the ninth, short in the tenth.
- 2:32:48Beavers homing for Philadelphia. And Davenport
- 2:32:51homing for the Giants. That's the first of two.
- 2:32:53And a single game in Chicago at the end of three
- 2:32:55innings. The Cubs four and the Houston Colts
- 2:32:5745s four. Stone went in the third for Houston.
- 2:33:01Coontz Anderson in the fourth for Chicago. Mousetown
- 2:33:03a hundred and a third with one on for the Houston
- 2:33:05Colts 45s. In the American League at the end
- 2:33:07of three and a half, Detroit Tigers two and the
- 2:33:09Chicago White Sox nothing. Bazaar against Reagan.
- 2:33:13And here's the final score. Cleveland defeated
- 2:33:16Baltimore seven to nothing. Pedro Ramos pitched
- 2:33:20the shutout. Estrada was the loser. Ramos had
- 2:33:22two home runs in the ballgame himself. We're
- 2:33:25going now to the top half of the eighth inning,
- 2:33:27and Ron Fairley is up to lead off for the Dodgers.
- 2:33:30Morehead pitches inside for a ball. In a morning
- 2:33:33game, the Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins
- 2:33:3510 -1. Bill Stafford, the winner, he went all
- 2:33:37the way, and Bonikowski was the loser. Blanchard
- 2:33:39homered him to third with one on for the Yanks.
- 2:33:41A pitch to Fairley. Check swing, foul ball. It's
- 2:33:451 -1. In Kansas City, the Washington Senators
- 2:33:49got four runs in the top half of the first inning.
- 2:33:50Kansas City now coming to bat in the bottom of
- 2:33:52the first. Osteen started against Rocco. Pfister
- 2:33:55in the first inning for the A's. Rester homed
- 2:33:57in the first with two on for the Senators. And
- 2:34:00Boston is on the coast to play the Angels, a
- 2:34:02doubleheader. So that's the way things are going
- 2:34:06elsewhere. Change of speed, and there's a ground
- 2:34:08ball to the right side. Taken by Keneally, makes
- 2:34:10the play unassisted. To get Farrelly. What a
- 2:34:13day Farrelly's had. He's had a single, a triple,
- 2:34:16and a home run, but was out on the ground all
- 2:34:17that time. Frank Howard coming up. He's had a
- 2:34:20single and a double and driven in three runs
- 2:34:22in four trips. The score here, the Dodgers 12
- 2:34:27and the New York Mets 4. That pitch is high for
- 2:34:42a ball. Jerry Hook was the starting pitcher for
- 2:34:46the New York Mets and is the pitcher of record.
- 2:34:47Bob Miller is scheduled as a pitcher in the second
- 2:34:49game. Swing and a foul ball right down into the
- 2:35:00dirt off the bat of Frank Howard. and nobody
- 2:35:18on for the Dodgers. Moyer's pitch flung on. It's
- 2:35:22a ground ball going up the middle and through
- 2:35:23for a base hit. Jim Hickman charging, comes up
- 2:35:26with it, barehanded. Hickman turns and holds
- 2:35:29it first with, or rather Howard turns and holds
- 2:35:31it first with his third base hit of the day.
- 2:35:35And coming up now is Norm Sherry, coming up for
- 2:35:37the first time. Sherry came down to relieve the
- 2:35:39starting catcher, John Roseborough. Norm Sherry.
- 2:35:46Half of the brother battery of the Los Angeles
- 2:35:48Dodgers, Larry and Norm Sherry. Moorhead now
- 2:35:57working from a stretch position as Howard leads
- 2:35:58it first. Camille holds him on, swing and a ground
- 2:36:00ball foul. Pull down past Leo DeRocher, coaching
- 2:36:03it serious. DeRocher turns, looks around the
- 2:36:12crowd here at the polo gown. He's a familiar
- 2:36:15sight down there in the coaching line. Spent
- 2:36:20lots of time right there during his baseball
- 2:36:24career. Pitch goes high for Ball. It's one and
- 2:36:33one. Dodgers have 16 hits. The Mets have nine
- 2:36:41up to right now. In case you've joined us along
- 2:36:45the way, the New York Mets saw Gil Hodges get
- 2:36:49a home run this afternoon, the 367th of his Major
- 2:36:53League career. It's your time for a ball. And
- 2:37:00the New York Mets are the only team in the majors
- 2:37:02who have not been shut out this season. It has
- 2:37:10been the character of the ball club that it does
- 2:37:12not die, regardless of what the odds may be.
- 2:37:16They're trailing now by a score of 12 -4, but
- 2:37:18they've been battling right along. Swung on and
- 2:37:21fouled off the bat at Sherry and into the stands,
- 2:37:23down back to third foul ball. The count is 2
- 2:37:31-2 to catch a non -Sherry. With second baseman
- 2:37:34Larry Burright on deck. off to the right side.
- 2:38:01So the count holds it 2 -2 to non -cherry. Charlie
- 2:38:08Neal was not here at the start of today's ballgame.
- 2:38:10He was called from San Francisco to his home
- 2:38:12in Longview, Texas by the death of his uncle
- 2:38:16who actually reared him. So Charlie went to Longview
- 2:38:20for the funeral and arrives here after the start
- 2:38:23of the ballgame. He is dressed and is now in
- 2:38:24the Med -Dugout. Playing a foul ball. Count hold
- 2:38:29at 2 and 2 to know I'm Sherry. Bet your Harry
- 2:38:45Chidi walks out in front of the plate to fire
- 2:38:46the ball back to Bob Moorhead. These same two
- 2:38:51teams meet here tomorrow night. Game time, 8
- 2:38:55p .m. We'll be on the air as usual at 7 .55 p
- 2:38:57.m. New York time. As the fly ball punches out
- 2:39:05into center field, and Jim Hickman makes the
- 2:39:06run, and he's underneath waiting. He takes it,
- 2:39:09and Frank Howard, halfway on the fly ball to
- 2:39:10center, returns to the bag at first. Two men
- 2:39:14out. And Larry Burlight's coming up. He has won
- 2:39:19before. He's been on base twice today. We're
- 2:39:26in the top of the eighth of the first game of
- 2:39:29today's Memorial Day doubleheader at the Polo
- 2:39:30Guns. There'll be another doubleheader here on
- 2:39:32Saturday afternoon. It'll be the San Francisco
- 2:39:35Giants in here for that one. Pitch is in there
- 2:39:40for a called strike. There is something about
- 2:40:03the turnout of a large crowd like this which
- 2:40:05enhances the ballgame itself. Here's a swing
- 2:40:08and a miss. Two strikeout before the ballgame.
- 2:40:11Some of the Los Angeles Dodgers were looking
- 2:40:13around and newspaper photographers were around.
- 2:40:16Newsreel cameramen were around. Newspaper reporters.
- 2:40:19The stands were filled. And they said for all
- 2:40:22the world it looked like the opening game of
- 2:40:23the World Series. 0 -2 the count to Larry Burright
- 2:40:31at the plate. She's outside for a ball. He is
- 2:40:56taken for a called strike three. Started to flank,
- 2:40:59hard to check it. It's a strikeout for Bob Moyard.
- 2:41:03And in the top half of the eighth inning, the
- 2:41:04Los Angeles Dodgers got no runs on one hit, no
- 2:41:07errors in one left. And at the end of seven and
- 2:41:09one half innings of play at the Polo Gons in
- 2:41:11New York, the score is the Los Angeles Dodgers
- 2:41:1312 and the New York Mets 4. Now a message from
- 2:41:16Ryan Golex to drive told completely with music.
- 2:42:24thinning of this first game of today's Devil
- 2:42:26Header and coming in here to take you the rest
- 2:42:27of the way once again, Ralph Kiner. Thank you,
- 2:42:31Lindsey Nelson, and on the mound for the Los
- 2:42:33Angeles Dodgers as they lead 12 -4 Sandy Koufax.
- 2:42:37And Sandy right now has struck out nine batters.
- 2:42:41He has given up nine hits and allowed only four
- 2:42:44runs. And he'll be pitching to Phoenix Mantea.
- 2:42:47The first pitch is hit on the ground now to the
- 2:42:49third baseman, Andy Carey. Andy up and over to
- 2:42:51first base, out number one. Sandy Koufax has
- 2:42:58struck out 10 or more batters in 34 games in
- 2:43:01his career. He's done it three times this year.
- 2:43:05So he needs one more strikeout to run that total
- 2:43:09up to 35 games. Now the batter in the batter's
- 2:43:14box is Harry Chitty. Harry came in the ballgame
- 2:43:19as a pinch hitter in the fourth inning. He struck
- 2:43:21out. Then again struck out in the sixth. He is
- 2:43:240 for 2. He takes a fastball for call strike
- 2:43:26one. Now the left -hander back to the right -handed
- 2:43:37batter. A change of pace that's inside. Ball
- 2:43:39one. One ball, one strike. At Philadelphia, the
- 2:43:45San Francisco Giants, who lead the league by
- 2:43:48one and a half games, all tied up at the end
- 2:43:50of 11. There's the strike call to Harry Chitty.
- 2:43:53One ball and two strikes. It's a 3 -3 ball game.
- 2:44:01Marichal still in the game for the Giants. Short
- 2:44:04now pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies. A
- 2:44:081 -2 pitch to Harry. Swung on and fouled back
- 2:44:11in the screen. So the count will stay at 1 -2.
- 2:44:13And again out in the bullpen for the New York
- 2:44:15Mets. Vinegar Ben Mizell up and drawing. of the
- 2:44:26eighth inning to score 12 -4 in favor of the
- 2:44:28Los Angeles Dodgers. Curveball just a little
- 2:44:32low. Ball two. Two balls and two strikes. In
- 2:44:39the second game, it will be Johnny Padres going.
- 2:44:41He has a 3 -3 record. He needs only four more
- 2:44:44strikeouts to reach the 1 ,000th mark. 2 -2 pitch
- 2:44:50to Chidi. Swung on and missed strike three. So
- 2:44:53Harry goes down swinging for the third time.
- 2:44:55And that is strikeout number 10. So Sandy Koufax
- 2:44:59has now struck out 10 or more batters in 35 games
- 2:45:06in his career. And that's the fourth time he
- 2:45:08has done it in 1962. Now announced as a pinch
- 2:45:20hitter for Bob Boyd, Richie Ashburn. So Vinegar
- 2:45:23Ben Mizell will come in the ballgame. He takes
- 2:45:26a called strike, strike one. Now Koufax back
- 2:45:37with a side -on turn to hit the right field.
- 2:45:39Coming on fast is Frank Howard, and he makes
- 2:45:41the catch to retire the side. So in the eighth
- 2:45:45inning, Koufax makes a quick one, three up and
- 2:45:48three down, and the score, at the end of eight
- 2:45:50innings of play, the Los Angeles Dodgers 12 -1
- 2:45:53on 16 hits. They have made two errors. The New
- 2:45:57York Mets, four runs on nine hits. They have
- 2:46:00made one error. While looking down here at the
- 2:46:05Los Angeles Dodgers in their first return engagement
- 2:46:07here at the Polar Grounds, I guess it's about
- 2:46:10time to remind you that they'll be back in town
- 2:46:12and there will be especially important added
- 2:46:16traction in the next ballgame they play here
- 2:46:19on July 14th. That will be all -timers day. And
- 2:46:24they will re -enact the famous dramatic pennant
- 2:46:28playoff of 1951. And all the people who were
- 2:46:31in that are invited to make their appearances.
- 2:46:33There have been two who have accepted the two
- 2:46:36most important men who were involved in that
- 2:46:38great pennant win for the Dodgers. Bobby Thompson,
- 2:46:50who hit the home run. And also Ralph Baranca,
- 2:46:53who was the pitcher, pitching for the Dodgers
- 2:46:58that the home run was hit off of. It's always
- 2:47:00a great win for the Giants, a win that was heard
- 2:47:02around the world. They went on to win the World
- 2:47:06Championship. Old Diamonds will play a two -inning
- 2:47:12game prior to the regularly scheduled game that
- 2:47:14afternoon between the New York Mets and the Los
- 2:47:16Angeles Dodgers. So you can pick up your tickets
- 2:47:19for this ballgame. at any of three convenient
- 2:47:24locations right here at the Polar Grounds at
- 2:47:26the Advanced Reservation window, downtown and
- 2:47:29Grand Central Station. That's over on the Vanderbilt
- 2:47:32-Glantz side. And you can also pick them up in
- 2:47:38Pennsylvania Station in the Long Island Waiting
- 2:47:40Room. You can make your reservations at all the
- 2:47:43holler -trolling stores throughout the area.
- 2:47:47Now in the ballgame, a change in the battery.
- 2:47:49Winninger Ben Mizell on the mound for the Mets.
- 2:47:53He'll be the fourth pitcher used. And catching
- 2:47:55in the ballgame, Hobie Landry. Quick check of
- 2:48:00the scores on the final game. San Francisco -Philadelphia
- 2:48:03all tied up at the end of 11 -3 -3. No final
- 2:48:07there. In the American League. Cleveland 7, Baltimore
- 2:48:13nothing as Ramos fits a three -hitter and hits
- 2:48:16two home runs in that ballgame for his own cause.
- 2:48:20And, of course, the Yankees 10 -1 over Minnesota
- 2:48:22with the winning pitcher Stafford. The loser
- 2:48:25was Bonacowski. Blanchard had a home run that
- 2:48:30ballgame in the third with one on. Those are
- 2:48:32the finals. We'll bring you up to date after
- 2:48:34the ballgame on all the others. Now we're all
- 2:48:37set to go as Laker Ben Mizell gets on the mound.
- 2:48:40He'll be pitching to Sandy Koufax. First pitch
- 2:48:48to Koufax. Dribble down to third. Up with the
- 2:48:50ball as Ducky goes over to first base. Keneal
- 2:48:53in time for out number one. So Mizell gets his
- 2:49:00first man. And the next batter is Maury Will.
- 2:49:05Morey taking plenty of time to allow Sandy Koufax
- 2:49:08time to rest up for the ninth inning. Morey's
- 2:49:15had himself quite a day here. He has singled
- 2:49:18two times, and he hit an inside -the -park home
- 2:49:21run his first of the year. He also picked up
- 2:49:23a stolen base. That was his 24th. Three hits
- 2:49:28and five times up. He's batting right -handed
- 2:49:30against Mizell. The first pitch is fouled away.
- 2:49:33Strike one. Will's a switch hitter. Now the big
- 2:49:56left -hander into the windup, and the one -strike
- 2:49:59pitch is a curveball hit down the line, but going
- 2:50:01foul. And it lands on top of the roof. So it's
- 2:50:07a long strike, strike two on Maury Wells. Bob
- 2:50:13Miller will oppose Johnny Padres in the second
- 2:50:17game. In this first game of the doubleheader,
- 2:50:24Jay Hook was the starter, and he's the pitcher
- 2:50:26of record. Change of pace, hit down the third
- 2:50:31base side, but again fouled. So the Cowboys stay
- 2:50:34at 0 -2 with one man out. It's a 12 -4 game,
- 2:50:36the Dodgers lead. In the last eight games, which
- 2:50:46the Dodgers won, Dodger pitchers have allowed
- 2:50:49only 13 earned runs. Last ball, it's inside.
- 2:50:54One ball and two strikes. They have really been
- 2:51:00hot, both in the hitting and pitching departments.
- 2:51:04Departments. One -two pitch to Wills. It's deep
- 2:51:10to left field. Way back there. Thomas is back
- 2:51:12in the warning jack. He is by the wall, and he
- 2:51:14watches it go in the stands for a home run. The
- 2:51:18ball catching on the upper deck. A long home
- 2:51:20run by Maury Wills. And that's his second home
- 2:51:23run of the game, his second of the year. Fourth
- 2:51:30home run of the ball game by the Dodgers, and
- 2:51:32the Dodger players sitting in the dugout doing
- 2:51:34nothing. They're giving him the silent treatment.
- 2:51:36No action at all. Well, it isn't often that Roy
- 2:51:39Wills hits a home run, and so the Dodgers, having
- 2:51:42a little bit of fun, gave him the silent treatment.
- 2:51:44He came in the dugout. No one said a word. No
- 2:51:46one got up. Finally, they all got up and shook
- 2:51:48his hand, and a big smile broke out of his face.
- 2:51:51A home run by Roy Wills at 13 -4. And the next
- 2:51:54batter takes low and outside. Andy Carey, ball
- 2:51:56one. Wills last year had one home run for the
- 2:52:05year, so you can see he's not used to that treatment.
- 2:52:07There's a long drive to left, but going foul.
- 2:52:10So the countdown, Andy Carey, one ball and one
- 2:52:12strike. In fact, the two home runs here today
- 2:52:22by Will topping his major league total in his
- 2:52:25major league history. He had only one home run
- 2:52:28in his major league career up till today. Won't
- 2:52:31change a face outside. Ball two. Two balls and
- 2:52:34one strike. Well, as we've said before, anything
- 2:52:46and everything happens here at the Polo Ground.
- 2:52:51High pop -up over towards the first base side
- 2:52:54going into the lower box seat. Well, they count
- 2:52:57now. Two balls and two strikes. One thing about
- 2:53:02the polar ground, you never know when the game
- 2:53:04is over. With the short fences down the line
- 2:53:07and, of course, the long area in center field,
- 2:53:09just about every type of ball can be hit here.
- 2:53:13Every type of hit can be picked up. Change of
- 2:53:17pace. One on a miss. Strike three. Andy Kier
- 2:53:19out in front. And Mizell picks up his first strikeout.
- 2:53:23That's out number two. The Mets pitchers have
- 2:53:27struck out six Dodger batters. Bob Moorhead,
- 2:53:30who worked five innings, picking up four strikeouts.
- 2:53:35Dave Hillman had one. Now Mizell won. And here
- 2:53:38is Willie Davis. Willie, a left -handed batter.
- 2:53:45And the first pitch to him. Hits Joplin through
- 2:53:48the hole in the right field at base end. Well,
- 2:53:51Willie Davis now, with three base hits in the
- 2:53:54ballgame, one of them a two -run home run. He
- 2:53:58is three for six. And coming in the batter's
- 2:54:04box, Tommy Davis. Tommy, one for three. Make
- 2:54:08it one for four in the ballgame. On right -handed
- 2:54:10batter. 13 -4 Dodgers, top of the ninth inning.
- 2:54:25First game of two, and the first pitch to Tommy
- 2:54:28Davis, outside and low, ball one. Change of pace,
- 2:54:46that's down low again, ball two. Two balls and
- 2:54:48no strikes. Obie Landers, a catcher. He has replaced
- 2:54:53Terry Petey. Mets have used three catchers in
- 2:54:56the ballgame. Sammy Taylor was a starting catcher.
- 2:54:59And they have used four pitchers. Trying to stem
- 2:55:03the red -hot Los Angeles Dodgers. Her ball is
- 2:55:07fouled, sliced into the right field seat for
- 2:55:10strike one. Two balls and one strike. A 2 -1
- 2:55:30pitch is called strike two. So Mizell with a
- 2:55:33quick one over at the knees. Two balls and two
- 2:55:36strikes to Tommy Davis. Two outs at first base,
- 2:55:39Willie Davis. Willie had a stolen base in the
- 2:55:43fifth inning. Now the 2 -2 pitch is lined in
- 2:55:51the left field. A base hit. Coming over is Thomas.
- 2:55:53He cuts it off before it gets to the wall. And
- 2:55:55holding the second base is Willie Davis. So the
- 2:55:58Davis boys on at first and second, and the batter
- 2:56:00coming on is Ron Fairley. Three hits in this
- 2:56:04inning off of Mizell. And 19 hits in the ballgame
- 2:56:13by the Dodgers to go along with their 13 runs.
- 2:56:16Mets have four runs on nine hits. And Ron Fairley,
- 2:56:21who took a 10 -game consecutive game streak.
- 2:56:24Into this ballgame, now up at bat. He has three
- 2:56:27for five. Left -handed batter, and he takes high
- 2:56:31ball. Vaughn hit his first major league home
- 2:56:41run of this season. In the third inning, he also
- 2:56:44has tripled in singles. Mizell back with a curve
- 2:56:52that drops over. Strike one. One ball and one
- 2:56:54strike. Fairley not counting his three for five
- 2:57:01here today. Has raised his average from 136 to
- 2:57:04320 over the past ten games. He's hit at an average
- 2:57:08of 581. The 1 -1 pitch to Fairley is high ball
- 2:57:16two. with a record of one win and two losses.
- 2:57:33Making his fifth appearance for the New York
- 2:57:36Mets. This is his ninth, including his Pittsburgh
- 2:57:39game. Fastball, calls, strike two, right through
- 2:57:42at the knees. Two balls and two strikes. The
- 2:58:062 -2 pitch to Farrelly. Swung on and missed.
- 2:58:08Strike three. Though Mizell strikes out two men
- 2:58:12in the ninth inning, but he gave up one run on
- 2:58:17three hits. There were no errors in the inning.
- 2:58:20Two men were left. And the score at the end of
- 2:58:26eight and one -half innings of play. The Los
- 2:58:30Angeles Dodgers 13, the New York Mets 4. And
- 2:58:35now a word from Vice Roy Cigarettes. The last
- 2:58:40of the night. Score 3 -0. The bases were loaded.
- 2:58:43Then wouldn't you know, two men fanned. They
- 2:58:45missed by a mile. Then Casey stepped up to the
- 2:58:48plate with a smile. Now Casey smokes filters,
- 2:58:50but knows it's true that even some filters are
- 2:58:53rough on you. While other brands in the filter
- 2:58:55crowd are just like smoking a warmed -over cloud.
- 2:59:01But Viceroy tastes the way you'd like a filter
- 2:59:04cigarette to taste. Not too strong, not too light.
- 2:59:08Viceroy's got the taste that's right. That's
- 2:59:11right. Well, Casey won the game with his longest
- 2:59:14homer yet. The manager's daughter said... Have
- 2:59:16a cigarette? Today they're a family with a girl
- 2:59:19and a boy, and it all began with a Viceroy. That's
- 2:59:22right. So Casey wants you to know, and he'll
- 2:59:24take all bets, if you smoke all seven filter
- 2:59:27cigarettes, you'll find some too strong. Some
- 2:59:29too light. But vice -wise, guys, the pace, that's
- 2:59:33right. That's right. That's right. That's right.
- 2:59:40Moving now to the bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 2:59:45And the Mets need nine to tie. Their first man
- 2:59:48up will be Joe Christopher. He's the leadoff
- 2:59:50man in the batting order, followed by Eddie Chacon
- 2:59:52and Cliff Cook. Danny Koufax on the mound. And
- 2:59:55his first pitch to Christopher, a called strike
- 2:59:57at the knees, a fastball. Joe two for four here
- 3:00:01today. He has singled his last two times up.
- 3:00:05He has scored a run and batted one in. Colfax
- 3:00:10working through eight innings has struck out
- 3:00:12ten men. And the next pitch to Christopher is
- 3:00:14down low. Ball one. One ball and one strike.
- 3:00:31and the pitch is called a strike, strike two.
- 3:00:34One ball and two strikes to Joe Christopher.
- 3:00:40Norm Sherry, the catcher, he replaced John Roseboro
- 3:00:43in the bar game. And Andy Sherry at third base
- 3:00:46in place of Jim Gilliam. A one -two pitch to
- 3:00:50the right -handed batter. Curve that stays high.
- 3:00:52Ball two. Two balls and two strikes. It's the
- 3:00:56first game of a doubleheader here in Memorial
- 3:00:58Day. Now Koufax back to the plate with a 2 -2
- 3:01:04pitch. Just too low. Ball three. Three balls
- 3:01:06and two strikes. 13 -4 game in favor of the Dodgers
- 3:01:23as Koufax looks for the sign on the full count
- 3:01:25pitch. And here it is. A fastball lined to the
- 3:01:28middle of a pitch. Joe Christopher rounding at
- 3:01:31first base, holds there, and he has now three
- 3:01:33hits in the ballgame. That's hit number 10 off
- 3:01:36Sandy Koufax. Joe Christopher leads off here
- 3:01:43in the 10th inning. That's needing nine runs
- 3:01:47to tie the ballgame with an ace hit. And the
- 3:01:50batter is Elio Chacon. Elio, a perfect day today.
- 3:01:53A watch, a base hit, a base hit, and a watch.
- 3:01:56Two for two. Ineos started the game with a .240
- 3:02:02average. Now Christopher's first base leading
- 3:02:14off on the pitch to Chacon. There's a strike
- 3:02:16call that Chacon watches it go by. Von Fairley
- 3:02:22at first base, not holding Christopher on with
- 3:02:24the big lead. Colfax returns a curveball that's
- 3:02:31inside and high. Ball one. One ball, one strike.
- 3:02:36It is the cone who was worried about whether
- 3:02:38or not he would be accepted back in New York
- 3:02:40after his fight with Willie Mays, who is recognized
- 3:02:42as the king here in New York. He was well -received.
- 3:02:46There's a beautiful punt. Colfax coming over,
- 3:02:49picks it up, throws late the first base. The
- 3:02:52cone, a base hit. And moving down to second base,
- 3:03:06Joe Christopher. So Elias Chacon, three for three
- 3:03:08now with a perfect punch. And on the throw to
- 3:03:11first base, Ron Fairley had to jump high to pull
- 3:03:14it down. Runners at first and second, and the
- 3:03:17batter is Cliff Cook. So the Mets, as they have
- 3:03:26done all through the season, still fighting back,
- 3:03:29never giving up in the ballgame. They have been
- 3:03:32a tough club in the latter inning. Right here,
- 3:03:35though, it's a tough fight as they need nine
- 3:03:37runs to tie. They were only out of two ballgames
- 3:03:42on the entire 12 -game road trip. First pitch
- 3:03:46to Cook is taken high, ball one. No one up in
- 3:03:50the bullpen for the Dodgers. Sandy Koufax with
- 3:04:01a 1 -0 pitch. Again, high, ball two. Few balls
- 3:04:22and no strikes. Cliff took the batter. Now Koufax
- 3:04:26into the stretch. He has runners at first and
- 3:04:28second and no one out. There's a strike call.
- 3:04:30The fastball right through the heart. For the
- 3:04:33count now, two balls and one. Joe Christopher
- 3:04:41at second base. He leers the cone at first. The
- 3:04:492 -1 -6 to Cook is hit high in the air. An infield
- 3:04:53fly. There's the sign. The batter is automatically
- 3:04:55out. Coming in to make the catch is Fairley,
- 3:04:57and he does. Out number one. So one man is down
- 3:05:08now, and the batter is Frank Thomas. Frank walked
- 3:05:11in the first inning, then was called out on strikes
- 3:05:13in the third. Running out to third in the fifth.
- 3:05:17His last time up, he needed a base hit to continue
- 3:05:20his consecutive game hitting streak. He doubles
- 3:05:24to left field, and he has now hit an 18 consecutive
- 3:05:27ball game. That's the high for the National League
- 3:05:30this year. Frank also drove in his 31st run with
- 3:05:36that base hit. First pitch to him, a big curve
- 3:05:38that's dug out of the dirt. Swung on a miss.
- 3:05:40Strike one. Here's the final score, Pittsburgh
- 3:05:513, St. Louis 1. The winning pitcher, Francis,
- 3:05:54for the Pirates. Washburn was the loser for the
- 3:05:58Cardinals. Stewart had a home run in that ballgame
- 3:06:03in the first inning with one on. Right here at
- 3:06:0813 -4, Dodgers. And the next pitch to Thomas
- 3:06:10is down low, ball one. One ball, one strike.
- 3:06:18After eight and one half innings, Cincinnati
- 3:06:20and Milwaukee all tied up at 3 -3. O'Toole and
- 3:06:24Pache. Now Sandy Koufax with a 1 -1 pitch to
- 3:06:36Thomas. Fastball right through the heart of the
- 3:06:38plate. Strike two, right around the knee. One
- 3:06:40ball, two strikes. Koufax had plenty on that
- 3:06:45one. At the end of 11 innings, San Francisco
- 3:06:52and Philadelphia all tied up 3 -3. Miller now
- 3:06:57in the ballgame for San Francisco. Short pitching
- 3:07:00for Philadelphia. One -two pitch, a curveball
- 3:07:05popped up in the air. In foul territory. Andy
- 3:07:08Carey moving over. Now makes the catch for out
- 3:07:12number two. Go after Joe Christopher and Elias
- 3:07:17DeCone. Picked up base hits, put runners at first
- 3:07:20and second. Andy Koufax now has picked up Tiff
- 3:07:24Cook and Frank Thomas for two outs. And the batter
- 3:07:26now is Rod Ganeel. Rod came in the ballgame as
- 3:07:35a replacement for Gil Hodges. Gil giving a little
- 3:07:39rest because of the sore knee. Gil had previously
- 3:07:42hit his 367th major league home run. First pitch
- 3:07:45to Keneal is ball one. Curve ball, it's small.
- 3:07:55Rod has all for one. He was the ninth strikeout
- 3:07:58victim of Sandy Kofan. Next pitch to him, a fastball.
- 3:08:10Threw at the knees, strike one. One ball, one
- 3:08:12strike. Two men out now. The Mets need nine to
- 3:08:16tie. They have runners at first and second. The
- 3:08:18score 13 -4 in favor of the Dodgers. There's
- 3:08:28a base hit in the center field. Christopher will
- 3:08:30score from second base. Going to second base
- 3:08:32and holding there. Elias is called. So Rod Caneel
- 3:08:36picks up his first base hit and drives in a run
- 3:08:39in the Mets now. At five runs to 13 by the Dodgers.
- 3:08:43And the batter coming in is Jim Hickman. Hit
- 3:09:02number 12 off Sandy Koufax. But he's been coasting
- 3:09:06with a big lead all through the ballgame ever
- 3:09:08since. The third inning when the Dodgers let
- 3:09:11it 6 -0 at that point. First pitch to Hickman
- 3:09:15is a called strike. Jim with a double and four
- 3:09:24times up. A right -handed batter. Just missed
- 3:09:27the bases on the home run in the first inning
- 3:09:29when he hit one on top of the roof. Foul by about
- 3:09:3110 feet. A check and a swing. Low ball one. One
- 3:09:38ball and one strike. reading the sign from his
- 3:10:03catcher, Norm Sherry, and the 1 -1 pitch to Hickman.
- 3:10:06Hit sharply by the shortstop in the left field.
- 3:10:08Here comes Chacon around third base. He will
- 3:10:10score. And holding at second base, Rod Ganil.
- 3:10:14And now the Mets with two runs in to score 13
- 3:10:17-6. 13 -6, and Ron Fairley now talking it over
- 3:10:37with Sandy Koufax on the mound. Still no one
- 3:10:39throwing in the bullpen for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 3:10:46Mets with two runs in and four hits here in the
- 3:10:48bottom half of the ninth inning. And the batter
- 3:10:50now, Felix Mantia. And Koufax into the windup,
- 3:10:56and the pitch is hit high in the air to left
- 3:10:58field. Coming on there, Tommy Davis by the line,
- 3:11:02and he makes the catch. That ends the ball game.
- 3:11:13So the Los Angeles Dodgers win their first encounter
- 3:11:16with the New York Mets in the polo ground. And
- 3:11:18that's the first time they've played here since
- 3:11:201957. The final score of the ball game. The Dodgers
- 3:11:2613 runs on 19 hits, 2 errors. They left 10 men
- 3:11:29on. The Mets 6 runs on 13 hits, 1 error. They
- 3:11:34left ten on.
