I've been practicing ቡና እፈልጋለሁ every morning. Lucas: That's great! And today we're going to build on that. What if you want a snack with your coffee? Luna: Oh, I definitely want a snack. Let's learn it! What's the word for cake in Amharic? Lucas: Cake is ኬክ. Say it with me: ኬክ. Luna: ኬክ. That sounds like 'cake' but with an 'eh' sound. ኬክ. Lucas: Exactly! So if you want cake, you can say ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. I want cake. That's easy! What if I want chips? Like potato chips? Lucas: Chips in Amharic is ቺፕስ. So you can say ቺፕስ እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ቺፕስ እፈልጋለሁ. Another one that sounds similar. ቺፕስ. Lucas: Right! Now, what if you want to ask what kind of cake they have? You can say ምን አይነት ኬክ አለ? Luna: ምን አይነት ኬክ አለ? That's a bit longer. Let me try: ምን አይነት ኬክ አለ? Lucas: Perfect! And the waiter might say እንደዚያ ሁሉ ነገር የለም, meaning 'we don't have that kind of thing' or 'we don't have any.' Luna: Wait, that sounds like 'there is no such thing.' እንደዚያ ሁሉ ነገር የለም. That's useful if I ask for something they don't have. Lucas: Exactly. So let's practice a little scene. I'm the café worker. You come in and order. Luna: Okay! ቡና እፈልጋለሁ እና ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: ምን አይነት ኬክ ትፈልጋለህ? Luna: Uhh... እንደዚያ ሁሉ ነገር የለም? No wait, that's not right. I should say what kind. But I don't know the kinds! Lucas: That's okay. You can just say ምን አይነት ኬክ አለ? and then I'll tell you. So go ahead, ask me. Luna: ምን አይነት ኬክ አለ? Lucas: ቸኮሌት ኬክ እና ቫኒላ ኬክ አለ. Luna: Oh, chocolate and vanilla.
