- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith and my name is
- 0:03Tracie and we are in an episode that I think that
- 0:07is gonna check some hearts today. This isn't
- 0:09just for someone out there. This is for all of
- 0:13us because if we're honest every single one of
- 0:15us knows what it's like to get hurt. To have
- 0:18someone say something or not say something and
- 0:22that leaves a sting in your heart. Now this is
- 0:25where it gets real instead of giving the pain
- 0:28to God like we should, we replay the conversation
- 0:31in our head. We write imaginary speeches of what
- 0:35we should have said and we build our case and
- 0:38we don't even realize what we're doing, but we're
- 0:41holding on to bitterness. And so in today's episode,
- 0:44we're going to be talking about what bitterness
- 0:47does to our heart, how we resent the Holy Spirit
- 0:52nudges, and why it's vital to sit quietly in
- 0:56the presence of God and how to forgiveness frees
- 1:00us from Not just sitting there in our own hurt
- 1:05but it frees the other person So grab your coffee
- 1:08your Bible and maybe even a notebook but because
- 1:10today we're gonna go deep And so you know that
- 1:13we like to live out things Here before we talk
- 1:17about it. And so let's talk about the reality
- 1:19of hurt. So Being hurt is part of living in a
- 1:23broken world. Jesus said himself in John 16 33
- 1:27in this world You will have trouble but take
- 1:29heart I have overcome the world Notice he didn't
- 1:32say you might or maybe he said you will People
- 1:36will fail you every day. We are not perfect people
- 1:40You are not perfect. I am not perfect and even
- 1:43the ones throughout and Throughout time and people
- 1:48that you never thought would maybe it's a friend
- 1:50maybe it's a spouse, maybe it's someone in your
- 1:53church family, and that's a special kind of pain,
- 1:57isn't it? And instead of surrendering that pain
- 2:00to God, we take it and we harbor it into bitterness.
- 2:04Hebrews 12 -15 says, see to it that no one falls
- 2:08short of the grace of God and that no bitterness
- 2:11takes root and causes trouble and defile many.
- 2:16That phrase, root of bitterness, It's intentional.
- 2:20Roots grow deep. Roots are hidden. Roots spread.
- 2:24And we've done episodes on roots. And you may
- 2:27think that you're keeping it contained, but roots
- 2:30always find a crack. And bitterness spreads into
- 2:34conversations, relationships, even your prayers.
- 2:38And before long, it's not just about them anymore.
- 2:42It's affecting your intimacy with God. And as
- 2:46we were in small group this week, we were talking
- 2:49about what kids are feeling, what youth are feeling,
- 2:52and a lot of them are angry because of hurts,
- 2:56because of... Past relationships because of what
- 2:59someone said and a lot of them hold on to grudges
- 3:02a lot of them hold on to bitterness and and this
- 3:06may be Because that's what they see in their
- 3:08home that they may be because that's what society
- 3:10says to do is like How can they wrong you and
- 3:13who are you to forgive them and they you know
- 3:15all this? No, and so as we were talking, you
- 3:19know in in in group It was really much about
- 3:23like who am I? Who am I to hold on to past hurts
- 3:29and regret, you know regrets because People are
- 3:33gonna hurt us. I mean he literally says people
- 3:35are gonna hurt us. They're not perfect, but I
- 3:37often find too that God allows us to be in certain
- 3:41situations to see something in our heart, you
- 3:43know, why did that affect me so much? Why did
- 3:45I take that so personally? What what is what
- 3:47are you trying to teach me? Because he'll teach
- 3:49you he will give you wisdom He will give you
- 3:51discernment if you go to him if you take that
- 3:53hurt to him He will allow something that he is
- 3:57trying to fix in you to be illuminated and I
- 4:00was telling the kids like Used to be a super
- 4:03angry person and you know, like if you do something
- 4:07to me, you're dead to me I have no reason for
- 4:10you to my life and it was Pre Jesus post Jesus
- 4:16is who am I? Who am I to hold on to that grudge?
- 4:21Who am I to hold on to bitterness and anger?
- 4:24It says do not go to bed angry at night And I
- 4:27take that kind of literally is that we don't
- 4:29want to go to bed angry. We don't want to go
- 4:31to bed mad and it is If God can forgive me for
- 4:37everything that I have done on a daily basis
- 4:40And it says in Scripture how many times are we
- 4:42supposed to forgive somebody? You know 70 times
- 4:447, you know And so it's just that forgiveness
- 4:47and forgiveness because who am I? You know, why
- 4:49did I hold them at such a whole high standard?
- 4:51Why did I put them on a platform so they could
- 4:53fall? You know, why did I allow you know? this
- 4:58person to have so much You're gonna fall. Why
- 5:03did you put them up there? You know, and so it
- 5:06was just like you I was telling the kids like
- 5:07it's just about having that Grace that we get
- 5:11and so all the grace and mercy that god has given
- 5:14us. We've got to extend it to other people I
- 5:17mean, so if you have held that grudge if you've
- 5:19held that anger take that to god and be like
- 5:22Why did this affect me so much have I actually
- 5:25put them on a pedestal where they didn't need
- 5:26to be? um was I expecting this expectation of
- 5:30them that I They could never meet and so take
- 5:34that to god. And so why did this hurt me so much?
- 5:36Why did this? affect me in this way, like teach
- 5:39me, you know, like I'm hurt for a reason. You
- 5:44allowed this certain situation to happen. How
- 5:47can we, how can I grow from this? How can I mature
- 5:49from this? And then we have grieving the Holy
- 5:52Spirit. And so we have Ephesians 4 .30 through
- 5:5532 that says, and do not grieve the Holy Spirit
- 5:59from God with whom you are sealed. for a day
- 6:02of redemption get rid of all bitterness rage
- 6:05and anger along from every form of malice be
- 6:08kind and compassionate to one another forgiving
- 6:10each other just as the christ has forgiven you
- 6:14did you catch that holding onto bitterness doesn't
- 6:17just hurt you it grieves the spirit think about
- 6:21it in the word just grieve You can only grieve
- 6:26someone you love. You can only grieve if there's
- 6:29intimacy. So when you cling to bitterness instead
- 6:32of obeying his nudge, the Holy Spirit is literally
- 6:35grieving inside of us because he knows what it's
- 6:39costing us. Have you ever felt that? The quiet
- 6:43whisper? Don't send the text. Don't rehearse
- 6:46the fight. Just go talk to them or just let it
- 6:50go. And instead of listening, We double down
- 6:54and we say nope, not this time Friends ignoring
- 6:57the spirit. It's like hitting the snooze button
- 7:00On the alarm that you know, you can't afford
- 7:04to sleep through and so if the Holy Spirit is
- 7:06telling you to do something You're missing out
- 7:09on an opportunity for God to work in your life
- 7:12in their life And it could be months. It could
- 7:15be years. It could be a decade before you allow
- 7:18them to See that forgiveness to see that Christ
- 7:24like atmosphere and allow him to work through
- 7:27everything that he wants to work through in this
- 7:30situation and so that first nudge Do what he
- 7:33says if he says go talk to him then you go talk
- 7:35to him if he says go you know, express your hurt
- 7:39or your anger or whatever. Go do that. Go talk
- 7:43to him the first time that you're nudged. Don't
- 7:44wait for him to punch you in the face. Just take
- 7:47that quiet time with him and be in prayer from
- 7:50the initial hurt and he will walk you through
- 7:54all the hurt, all the anger, all the bitterness
- 7:57if you allow him to. If you don't allow him to...
- 8:00I mean you have to be able to just sit with him
- 8:03and allow him to work through you and by your
- 8:07disobedience you are um not helping anybody.
- 8:14I mean even just half -hearted obedience is disobedience
- 8:18and we don't want to be disobedient. We want
- 8:20to be just followers of him and allowing him
- 8:25to work through our life. And why are we resistant?
- 8:29Why are why do we resist pride, fear, control?
- 8:35We convenience ourselves. If I forgive them,
- 8:38it's saying like what they did was OK. But forgiveness
- 8:41isn't saying it's OK. It's saying I won't let
- 8:45your wrong destroy me. Corey Boom, who survived
- 8:51the Holocaust, said this forgiveness is setting
- 8:54the prisoner free only to find the prisoner.
- 8:57was you. We resist because bitterness feels powerful.
- 9:02It makes us feel like we're holding the upper
- 9:04hand. But in reality, it's just holding us. And
- 9:10the power was sitting with God. And so here's
- 9:13a pivot. And so the only way to loosen bitterness
- 9:16is to sit with God and to be still. And so Psalm
- 9:1946 10 says, be still and know that I am your
- 9:22God. Notice it doesn't say be busy and know that
- 9:25I am your God or scroll through Instagram and
- 9:28know that I'm your God. It says be still. Stillness
- 9:31is awkward. Our culture runs on it, but stillness
- 9:36is where God speaks. When you sit with him, just
- 9:39you and him, he reminds you, I saw what happened.
- 9:43I know how deeply you were hurt. I've carried
- 9:46worse for you and I can carry this too. Bitterness
- 9:50can't survive in the presence of God. it withers
- 9:54under his light. And so in class we are, in my
- 9:59seminary, we are sitting with the scripture of
- 10:03Acts 1 -8 and you get nothing but scripture.
- 10:07and the Holy Spirit. And so it's so much easier
- 10:10to use Logos or to Google or to whatever. And
- 10:13the assignment was, no, wrestle with God and
- 10:15give me 25 observations of Acts 1 -8. You know
- 10:19no knowledge before, you know no knowledge after.
- 10:23You only have Acts 1 -8. And you have to sit
- 10:26with that and look through and observe only the
- 10:30facts that are in this 37 -word scripture. And
- 10:34then you turn that in and your girl got a hundred
- 10:37And then we had to go back and so this next assignment
- 10:41is you have to find 25 more and it is about wrestling
- 10:45with this scripture and There is nothing else
- 10:48in this and I have closed my computer probably
- 10:5042 times because I cannot think of anything else
- 10:52But it's about just sitting and in prayer with
- 10:55God and just hey help me illuminate Let me see
- 10:58what you see there is something This scripture
- 11:01and so it's just me and the Holy Spirit and scripture
- 11:04and the professor you've been said, you know
- 11:06You're gonna get frustrated and you're like,
- 11:08no, there's only eight more observations and
- 11:10this and he's like there's like a hundred and
- 11:11seventy five Observations and this one text and
- 11:14I'm like bro. You are crazy. There is not a hundred
- 11:17seventy five things in there and so The next
- 11:21assignment was to do that 25 and so I sat there
- 11:24for like a good week Wrestling with this one
- 11:27scripture and I finally pulled out I think 25
- 11:30and there's probably more and so We've not got
- 11:34to the third assignment yet, but we're gonna
- 11:35see what it says and so, you know Just sitting
- 11:38with God in the presence. Okay. What are you
- 11:40trying to show me? What is this? And and as you
- 11:43just kind of put that into perspective Whenever
- 11:47you were anger, whenever you're bitter, just
- 11:49sitting with God and just wrestling with Him.
- 11:51Like I feel this certain way for a reason. I
- 11:53have this bitterness. I feel rejection. I feel,
- 11:56you know, why did they say this to me? Why did
- 11:57it hurt me so much? Like what are you trying
- 11:59to teach me? You know that they were gonna say
- 12:01this. You know that they were gonna do this and
- 12:04you allowed it to happen. So how can I learn
- 12:06from this? How can I be better from this? How
- 12:08can I and what are you teaching me? And just
- 12:10sitting with Him and whenever He nudges you,
- 12:14whenever you are spending time with Him. That's
- 12:16whenever he's gonna teach you that's whenever
- 12:18he's gonna mold you that's whenever he's going
- 12:19to illuminate You know all these things that
- 12:22are really inside of your heart and you're just
- 12:25like, oh my gosh, like, you know Thank you, you
- 12:28know, and it's just like such a great experience
- 12:30for him just to teach you and You know, it's
- 12:34just it's just wonderful And so here's some practical
- 12:37tips and exercises that we can do So here's something
- 12:40that I want you to actually do this week set
- 12:43aside 20 minutes Just 20 minutes. No background
- 12:46music. No podcasts. Not even mine. Open up Ephesians
- 12:514 or Psalm 46 and pray it out loud. Yes, out
- 12:57loud. No one judges you. No one cares. You're
- 13:00sitting in your room. You're sitting in your
- 13:02car. You're sitting on your back porch. You were
- 13:05saying it on a walk because we know that we have
- 13:07a phone that has the Bible app on there because
- 13:10whenever you speak it, you can't ignore it. Say,
- 13:14God, I don't want to carry this anymore. I release
- 13:17it to you. I want you more than I want this right
- 13:22now. And then just stop talking and just sit
- 13:25there and let him whisper back to you. 20 minutes
- 13:29with God. I'm sure that there's an app on your
- 13:32phone that you've spent more than 20 minutes
- 13:33on and you wasted your time and you came out
- 13:36no stronger from that app than scrolling or watching
- 13:41a TV show. just sitting with God for 20 minutes
- 13:45can be years uh decades of of watching tv you
- 13:50know on your favorite scrolling app whatever
- 13:52um i mean just the presence of God and just sitting
- 13:56with him and i mean you know when i tell the
- 13:59kids this and it's it's you know keep it simple
- 14:01he does not say that you have to spend five minutes
- 14:04with me, 10 minutes with me, it's not about that.
- 14:06It's about that relationship. It's about that
- 14:08love. It's about that just admiration and fear
- 14:11of the Lord. And fear is the awe of God. And
- 14:14we should never lose that fear. We should never
- 14:16lose that spark. We should never lose that and
- 14:19that, you know, just that awe and love of God.
- 14:23And then just sitting with him for 20 minutes.
- 14:25Okay, absolutely. The guy that just made the
- 14:27sunrise, I get a chance to sit with him. Absolutely.
- 14:30Let's go. Let's talk. Let's just love on each
- 14:33other. And I want to tell you everything. And
- 14:35you are a heavenly father. And you want to know
- 14:38all the things that are going on in my life.
- 14:39And I love you for this. Let's talk about Joseph.
- 14:45His own brother betrays him. He was thrown into
- 14:48a pit, sold into slavery. He gets lied about,
- 14:51imprisoned. If anyone has a right to be bitter,
- 14:53it would be Joseph. But years later, when he
- 14:56faces those same brothers, he said, you meant
- 14:59evil against me, but God meant it for good. In
- 15:02Genesis 50 -20. Or take David. Saul tried to
- 15:06kill him multiple times. David had the opportunity
- 15:08to strike back, but instead he said, I will not
- 15:11lay a hand on the Lord's anointed. He trusted
- 15:15God to deal with Saul. God will fight your battles.
- 15:18God will work on that person. And also too, if
- 15:21you have strife with somebody, you pray for them.
- 15:24You pray for God to change their heart. You pray
- 15:26for God to change their vision. You pray that
- 15:29God illuminates why you are so hurt or you held
- 15:33onto that bitterness because you don't know what
- 15:35that person's working through. You don't know
- 15:36the context of their life and how they were raised
- 15:39or how they were taught or whatever's going on
- 15:42in their life. So allowing that situation not
- 15:45for you to hold onto that bitterness, but to
- 15:48pray for that person. Because what happens if
- 15:50there's something going on and you don't know?
- 15:53And so allowing that strife in your life to just
- 15:59illuminate and be an intercessor for that person.
- 16:03And then of course, you have Jesus, betrayed
- 16:06by Judas, denied by Peter, abandoned by his disciples,
- 16:11mocked, beaten. crucified and yet hanging on
- 16:15the cross he said father forgive them for they
- 16:18know not what they do do you see that pattern
- 16:21God doesn't minimize your hurt but he does show
- 16:25you the way out and the way out is never bitterness
- 16:30it's always forgiveness there's sometimes there's
- 16:36some things that we don't like to admit sometimes
- 16:39our silence is just disobedience in disguise.
- 16:43The spirit prompts us to speak, to apologize,
- 16:46to reconcile, to encourage, but we just stay
- 16:49quiet. Why? Because it's uncomfortable. We don't
- 16:54like confrontation. We don't like to bring up
- 16:56old hurt. We don't like to, we just want to sweep
- 16:57it under the rug. Because we're scared of rejection.
- 17:01We're scared of confrontation. We're scared of
- 17:03the unknown. But in James 417 says if anyone
- 17:07then knows that God, that the good, they ought
- 17:11to do and doesn't, it's a sin. That includes
- 17:17holding back forgiveness. That includes ignoring
- 17:20the Holy Spirit. And so really looking and just
- 17:24sitting with him and asking God search my heart.
- 17:26What is the bitterness? What am I holding on
- 17:28to? What what don't I trust you with what what
- 17:31battles that I'm I trying to face? Why am I so
- 17:34tired all the time and he's like cuz you're fighting
- 17:36a battle that you were never meant to fight you
- 17:37were holding on to all these burdens and forgiveness
- 17:40and bitterness and the bitterness and anger and
- 17:43resentment that we hold on to people We are never
- 17:46gonna be able to be filled up with his love because
- 17:48all the crooks and crannies of our heart are
- 17:50filled with bitterness and anger. We have no
- 17:52room for his love. And so allowing that to be
- 17:56emptied and allowing that the just to get it
- 18:00out and pour it out and just feeling that burden
- 18:02just leave you. There is no better feeling about
- 18:05just laying it at his feet and walking away.
- 18:08And so if you're listening right now and you
- 18:10feel that weight you've been holding on to for
- 18:13months even years. You need to hear this. God
- 18:18sees you. He's not forgotten you. He's not asking
- 18:22you to minimize the pain. He's asking you to
- 18:25hand it over. Bitterness wants you chained to
- 18:28it. Jesus wants you free. And the freedom always
- 18:32begins with His presence. And so what was meant
- 18:36to harm you and what was meant to divide you?
- 18:39The devil won that day because you're holding
- 18:41on in resentment and just anger and bitterness.
- 18:43And he was like, yeah, I got him where I want
- 18:45him. I don't want them to talk. I want them to
- 18:47hold on to that bitterness and anger and that
- 18:48hurt. I don't want them to talk it out. I don't
- 18:50want them to see God working in their lives.
- 18:53I don't want them to see what is on the other
- 18:56side of forgiveness. I want them to stay mad.
- 18:57I want them to hang on to bitterness. And I don't
- 19:01want the devil to win any day. I want to walk
- 19:04in freedom. I want to walk with my heart just
- 19:07full of his love because I'm not holding on to
- 19:10anything that I'm not supposed to hang on to.
- 19:13And so maybe today, instead of one more mental
- 19:16replay of what they did, open your hands and
- 19:19say, God, I release this to you. I forgive. Help
- 19:23me. I want your freedom more than I want to be
- 19:28right, more than I want to hold onto this. I'm
- 19:30tired of holding onto it. And so if this message
- 19:34helped you today, share it. Send it to a friend
- 19:36that is walking through bitterness. That is,
- 19:38you know, that friend that's always angry. Send
- 19:40it to them. Because as I can see in our youth,
- 19:43that we have a lot of angry kids. We have a lot
- 19:45of people that are holding on to hurts and grudges
- 19:47and just walking around mad all the time and
- 19:51they have anger issues and things of that nature.
- 19:53Send it to whoever you feel would benefit from
- 19:57this. And so we would love to pray for you today.
- 19:59And so dear Heavenly Father, thank you for today.
- 20:02Thank you for yesterday. Father, you see the
- 20:05deep places that we're hurt and that we're carrying.
- 20:08You see the ways of bitterness, how it's wrapped
- 20:10around our hearts. We don't want to grieve the
- 20:14spirit any longer. Teach us how to forgive, not
- 20:17in our own strength, but in your strength. Draw
- 20:20us into the silence and stillness. Heal what
- 20:22is unhealable and remind us that you are our
- 20:26God, that you are our Father and that we are
- 20:28safe with you. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
- 20:33Amen. Thank you guys so much for spending time
- 20:35with us on Fostering Faith. In this episode,
- 20:38stirred you something in your heart. Share it
- 20:40with a friend. Sit with God this week. Don't
- 20:42listen and just respond. And as always, keep
- 20:48fostering your faith. And check out our new website,
- 20:50fosteringfaithmedia .com. And until next time,
- 20:53don't let the bitterness hold you. Listen to
- 20:55the Holy Spirit, sit with God, and walk in His
- 20:59freedom. We love you guys. Have an amazing week.
