Speaker 4: ten o six this morning. Let's welcome into the show
3:14
Speaker 4: now our good friend Millie Snyder.
3:15
Speaker 2: How you doing?
3:16
Speaker 6: Milly doing wonderful? Dave, how are you?
3:18
Speaker 2: I'm doing fine? Did you miss me last month?
3:20
Speaker 6: I not only missed you, but I also wanted to
3:22
Speaker 6: say congratulations for a great medical report. All you have
3:28
Speaker 6: to do is stay cancer free.
3:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, and you will.
3:31
Speaker 4: I will, absolutely I will. Yeah, I got a good
3:34
Speaker 4: bill of health. I mean, well as good as it gets,
3:36
Speaker 4: you know, for me. But yeah, I told all the
3:39
Speaker 4: listeners about that a couple of weeks ago. I'm actually
3:42
Speaker 4: with completed radiation treatments. They say I'm good to go,
3:44
Speaker 4: and so nothing until I don't have to go back
3:47
Speaker 4: until December.
3:49
Speaker 3: You know.
3:49
Speaker 6: That's the best goossible news, and just keep on keeping on.
3:52
Speaker 4: That's great, That's It's one of those things, guys. Get
3:56
Speaker 4: yourself checked because I had zero symptoms whatsoever, none, And
4:01
Speaker 4: I went in for a blood test and that's when
4:03
Speaker 4: they sent your PSA levels very high. And then I
4:06
Speaker 4: ignored it and went back the next year and they said, okay,
4:10
Speaker 4: your PSA lebel PSA level is getting off the charts.
4:14
Speaker 4: You got to get it taken care of it again.
4:16
Speaker 4: No symptoms. That's why they call prostate cancer the silent killer,
4:19
Speaker 4: because I had absolutely zero symptoms of anything. So bottom
4:23
Speaker 4: line is, get yourself checked. Natalie Tennant sent in for
4:27
Speaker 4: me last month, of course County Commissions. She pretty is delightful.
4:30
Speaker 4: She's pretty comfortable around a microphone. Yeah, you guys had
4:33
Speaker 4: a good good time. I was at a beach in Georgia,
4:36
Speaker 4: so I'm sorry for you.
4:38
Speaker 2: What's new with you?
4:39
Speaker 6: Well, I went to the Jersey Shore, all right, and
4:42
Speaker 6: got a little bit color, little tan, okay, And there's
4:45
Speaker 6: a very good friend who has a condo there for
4:48
Speaker 6: the summer months, and she invited me, so of course
4:52
Speaker 6: I couldn't say no. And it was just a wonderful time,
4:55
Speaker 6: just just to get out of get out of Dodge
4:58
Speaker 6: for a.
4:58
Speaker 4: Few days, like the Jersey Shore, because I've heard I've
5:00
Speaker 4: heard mostly good but.
5:01
Speaker 6: It was growing up in Baltimore, That's yeah. We always
5:05
Speaker 6: went to Atlantic City, uh huh. But the part of
5:07
Speaker 6: the Jersey Shore that I was at was Longport, and
5:11
Speaker 6: Atlantic City was like another twenty five thirty miles going north,
5:17
Speaker 6: and I've heard that, you know, it's kind of down trodden.
5:21
Speaker 6: So we didn't even go to Atlantic City. But in
5:24
Speaker 6: my younger years, growing up, going to the boardwalk and
5:27
Speaker 6: getting saltwater taffy and riding your bike on the boardwalk,
5:32
Speaker 6: that was a big deal. Yeah, and I remember those
5:35
Speaker 6: those thoughts, you know, very very fondly. My brother was
5:39
Speaker 6: always arguing with me, and I was always losing because
5:42
Speaker 6: he was always ald.
5:43
Speaker 2: Some things never change, that's for sure.
5:46
Speaker 5: You know.
5:46
Speaker 4: It's I have never been to a beach like north
5:50
Speaker 4: of Virginia, because I've been to Carolina's in Florida and Georgia,
5:55
Speaker 4: but I've never been to one north of Virginia. I'm
5:57
Speaker 4: presuming that you have what's the big differences between everything?
6:01
Speaker 6: Nothing?
6:02
Speaker 4: Nothing same ocean, I guess just the stuff around it
6:06
Speaker 4: changes a little bit.
6:07
Speaker 6: Yeah, but the ocean.
6:08
Speaker 2: Looks the same.
6:09
Speaker 6: But I tell you, when you lie outside to get
6:11
Speaker 6: some tan and the ocean air is blowing, you don't
6:16
Speaker 6: feel the sun, and it's just a great feeling, wonderful.
6:20
Speaker 6: But I do want to tell you, you know, you had
6:22
Speaker 6: no indication about prostate cancer, and I had breast cancer,
6:27
Speaker 6: and I went for a routine mammogram and two days
6:30
Speaker 6: later I got a phone call that I needed to
6:31
Speaker 6: come back in and that's how they discovered that I
6:35
Speaker 6: had early stages breast cancer. So I too, am very
6:38
Speaker 6: very fortunate.
6:39
Speaker 2: How long if you don't mind asking, how long ago was?
6:41
Speaker 6: That was in nineteen ninety seven, okay, but my problem
6:46
Speaker 6: was called Ductyl's carcinoma in situ, so there was no
6:50
Speaker 6: lymph node involvement. But when I had surgery, my surgeon
6:55
Speaker 6: got a clean margin and all I required was thirty
6:59
Speaker 6: three treatments of radiation. And ninety seven was a long
7:03
Speaker 6: time ago, and I'm very grateful.
7:05
Speaker 4: Well, and you know a lot of that has evolved
7:07
Speaker 4: even more, you know, since then. That's what I've learned
7:10
Speaker 4: about when I went through prostate cancer. I learned because
7:12
Speaker 4: I would talk to people, and Danny Jones was one
7:15
Speaker 4: that I talked to because Danny, you know, of course
7:17
Speaker 4: I had prostate cancer. Is prostate removed and Danny was
7:19
Speaker 4: one of the ones.
7:20
Speaker 2: I talked to. And it's just come.
7:23
Speaker 4: The treatments for cancer in general have come so far.
7:28
Speaker 4: There's way were twenty years ago, you know, let alone,
7:30
Speaker 4: you know, going back a long time ago.
7:34
Speaker 2: So how's classes going. You're still teaching the Mediterranean.
7:37
Speaker 6: People are getting more excited about Mediterranean. And we meet
7:40
Speaker 6: at the American Job Center on Leon Sullivan Way, but
7:44
Speaker 6: we only do a morning meeting and that is nine
7:46
Speaker 6: p thirty. We start talking at ten and Mediterranean. Although
7:51
Speaker 6: it's called the Mediterranean diet, it's not a diet. The
7:54
Speaker 6: Greek used the word diet to describe a way of eating.
7:59
Speaker 6: But I hate the world or diet. I always have hated.
8:01
Speaker 4: We use the term diet, I think in our culture
8:04
Speaker 4: to mean you are on intentionally trying to eat better
8:07
Speaker 4: to lose weight.
8:08
Speaker 2: Diet, by its definition, is just what you eat.
8:12
Speaker 4: So you could use you say exactly, you could say
8:15
Speaker 4: I have a healthy diet or I have an unhealthy diet.
8:17
Speaker 4: It's just it's not so much an action, you know,
8:21
Speaker 4: it's not it's not it's not an action verb so
8:23
Speaker 4: to speak. I mean, it can be used that way,
8:24
Speaker 4: but diet is just basically food.
8:26
Speaker 6: Too few people say they have an unhealthy diet because
8:29
Speaker 6: they would ever give that information out to the public.
8:32
Speaker 6: They always blame it on something else like heredity or
8:36
Speaker 6: you know, they had a they had they come from
8:38
Speaker 6: people who were overweight. That's not the cause, because is
8:42
Speaker 6: what you put in your mouth. What I'm so excited about.
8:45
Speaker 6: And I stay excited because you don't come to the
8:48
Speaker 6: Mediterranean mindset, which is the name of my group, to
8:52
Speaker 6: lose weight. You come to learn how to eat healthy
8:56
Speaker 6: and the change is so dramatic that you lose weight
9:00
Speaker 6: and it's not an intention.
9:02
Speaker 2: And that's.
9:05
Speaker 6: It puts. I mean, it gives good an entirely a
9:10
Speaker 6: new definition because you're eating and tasting food as it
9:14
Speaker 6: was intended to be tasted, not with additives, not with
9:19
Speaker 6: loads of fat. Have you ever read a food label.
9:22
Speaker 6: It's pretty scary. And in many cases your mouth can
9:26
Speaker 6: pronounce the preservatives because it's got a lot of x's
9:30
Speaker 6: and z's. I can't say it seven question marks and
9:33
Speaker 6: whatever else. And I don't want to put that in
9:34
Speaker 6: my body, and our bodies don't know how to deal
9:37
Speaker 6: with that, and it causes internal inflammation, aging process, it
9:43
Speaker 6: causes organ dysfunction in many people from the stuff we're
9:48
Speaker 6: putting in, and our creator had no plans for what
9:52
Speaker 6: to do with these foreign objects that were eating. Mediterranean
9:56
Speaker 6: way of eating has been around for centuries, and really,
10:00
Speaker 6: when you think about it, that's the way they eat
10:03
Speaker 6: in that part.
10:03
Speaker 2: Of the world.
10:04
Speaker 6: Now, I say centuries, at least one hundred years. A
10:09
Speaker 6: woman and you may have heard about this. There was
10:11
Speaker 6: a lady who at ninety nine years of age went
10:14
Speaker 6: to the doctor for a checkup and he said to her,
10:16
Speaker 6: how do you eat? So she told him, and he said, well,
10:19
Speaker 6: then you eat the Mediterranean way. Nothing was wrong with her.
10:23
Speaker 6: She didn't have one inkling of a medical problem. And
10:27
Speaker 6: as the story that was in the Wall Street Journal,
10:30
Speaker 6: actually she continued living and living her life and enjoying.
10:35
Speaker 6: She made it to one hundred and seventeen and nothing
10:39
Speaker 6: was wrong. The reason she died at one hundred and
10:41
Speaker 6: seventeen everything wore out. That was it.
10:44
Speaker 2: And there's not a lot you can do about that.
10:46
Speaker 4: Although diet, although your diet can lead or lack of
10:54
Speaker 4: a healthy diet can lead to joint problems on lead
10:57
Speaker 4: to all of these things.
10:58
Speaker 6: And you know, people in today's world are using many
11:02
Speaker 6: of the weight loss medications and they just want to
11:06
Speaker 6: lose weight fast, hurry up quick, But they're not embracing
11:10
Speaker 6: food and they're not embracing the changes of how to
11:14
Speaker 6: eat in a better healthier way. Now, will all of
11:17
Speaker 6: that come to pass, Probably yes, But in the meantime,
11:22
Speaker 6: there are some side effects that are rearing their ugly head,
11:25
Speaker 6: and I'm never happy about that. I don't want to
11:27
Speaker 6: see people have to take a sad trip to gain
11:33
Speaker 6: their weight back or to have health problems. But it's
11:36
Speaker 6: an inevitability because weight loss is only a tiny piece
11:41
Speaker 6: of taking care of your health. It's not the only thing.
11:45
Speaker 6: And if we make it the only thing, then we're
11:47
Speaker 6: missing the bigger piece of the education around what to
11:51
Speaker 6: eat how much. And that's what we did, and we
11:54
Speaker 6: also I believe group support makes all the difference in
11:59
Speaker 6: the world because you find out there are people who
12:02
Speaker 6: are just like you and doing the same thing or differently.
12:06
Speaker 6: But oh maybe I could try it the way you're
12:08
Speaker 6: doing it, and it makes a world of difference. I
12:11
Speaker 6: have some great success stories in our group, and I
12:15
Speaker 6: invite people to come. The costs are very nominal, twenty
12:18
Speaker 6: five dollars to join twelve dollars a week and that's it.
12:22
Speaker 6: There's no contracts, but showing up and being consistent and
12:27
Speaker 6: living the Mediterranean lifestyle is the way to go.
12:30
Speaker 5: All right.
12:31
Speaker 2: Remind people the times and locations of the classes.
12:34
Speaker 6: Again, we are on We are at the American Job Center.

Speaker 4: cheap plug Sunday afternoons noon to seven on ninety eight
16:20
Speaker 4: to seven a month. And because you know I may,
16:22
Speaker 4: I may very well say, Bruce Springsteen, you're on the air.
16:25
Speaker 4: I mean, I stay in a in a state of
16:27
Speaker 4: confusion with all the shows I do, but.
16:29
Speaker 2: Appreciate you being here. Let's start again. Good morning, Joe,
16:32
Speaker 2: welcome to the show.
16:34
Speaker 5: David, my brother. It's good to hear from you two.
16:37
Speaker 12: And hey, by the way, isn't it great to be
16:39
Speaker 12: in Canall Valley this weekend? I mean from one end
16:42
Speaker 12: to the other. If if you can't find something to
16:47
Speaker 12: do this weekend that is outside.
16:49
Speaker 5: And enjoyable, you're not trying.
16:51
Speaker 12: And I mean to tell you from Charleston to Saint
16:54
Speaker 12: Albans and Nitro, things are rocking this weekend.
16:57
Speaker 4: Buddy, you got a lot of stuff going on. I
16:59
Speaker 4: mean bike town, you say, I mean right here in
17:01
Speaker 4: the heart of Charleston. I mentioned the tour to Coal
17:03
Speaker 4: and Yakfast and you guys are opening up on the
17:06
Speaker 4: well of the most beautiful places around riding now a
17:09
Speaker 4: Lake talk about it.
17:11
Speaker 12: Well, now we've kind of rechristened it as the ride
17:14
Speaker 12: now Our Lake Preserved because a couple of years ago,
17:18
Speaker 12: the city council, looking ahead to the future of just
17:22
Speaker 12: playing outside in your backyard kind of thing, was able
17:25
Speaker 12: to acquire over two hundred acres of land adjacent to
17:30
Speaker 12: Riding Our Lake with a plan of expanding the trail
17:34
Speaker 12: system out there. And that trail system is now done.
17:37
Speaker 12: It was constructed by a local mountain bike trail builder,
17:42
Speaker 12: Tracy Toller with Adventure Trail Systems. He worked on it
17:46
Speaker 12: for almost eighteen months or so, and we now have
17:50
Speaker 12: twenty one trails open that surrounds Riding Hour Lake there
17:54
Speaker 12: right there on the hillside, and it's just we're cutting
17:59
Speaker 12: the red ribbon at noon on Saturday, but just to
18:03
Speaker 12: you know, kick everything off. We are starting at about
18:07
Speaker 12: ten o'clock around Shelter five and around the lake and
18:10
Speaker 12: on the trail system and everything. But we're gonna have
18:13
Speaker 12: free kayak rides. We're gonna have free paddle boat rides.
18:17
Speaker 12: DNR is going to be coming out there to make sure,
18:21
Speaker 12: you know, kids are learning how to fish the correct
18:23
Speaker 12: way and just some boat safety and that sort of thing.
18:27
Speaker 12: We don't have any gas power boats on the lake.
18:31
Speaker 12: It's all paddle boats and kayaks and that sort of thing.
18:35
Speaker 12: We're going and starting at ten o'clock, we're going to
18:38
Speaker 12: have a five k and ten k race. The cool
18:41
Speaker 12: thing about that is the city is picking up the tabs.
18:43
Speaker 12: There's no registration. Free feet the Appalachian Timing with Ricky
18:48
Speaker 12: Campbell and everything are coming out there and we're going
18:51
Speaker 12: to do a five and ten k race, the same
18:53
Speaker 12: courses for both and they will start at the same time.
18:56
Speaker 12: One lap for the five krs, two laps for the
18:59
Speaker 12: ten care and we will have gift cards for the
19:02
Speaker 12: winners in the various groups and probably some folks just
19:06
Speaker 12: showing up the runs, like Dave, if you just showed
19:08
Speaker 12: up to do the five k course, you would get
19:10
Speaker 12: a tutors gift cards. So that'll be happening. And again
19:15
Speaker 12: you don't have you can pre register at Appalachian timingap
19:19
Speaker 12: timing dot com or you can register when you come out,
19:24
Speaker 12: no fee, just strap on.
19:26
Speaker 5: The shoes and do it.
19:28
Speaker 12: We're gonna have food truck out there, We're gonna have
19:31
Speaker 12: free water, have a lot of other things going on free.
19:35
Speaker 12: We're gon do some guided heights and that sort of thing.
19:38
Speaker 12: At twelve o'clock though, we're going to be doing the
19:41
Speaker 12: ribbon cutting well the preserve right at the trailhead out
19:45
Speaker 12: at Shelter five. People might know it as also the
19:48
Speaker 12: dog park area, but right there as a trailhead, we're
19:52
Speaker 12: gonna be cutting the ribbon and about twelve thirty we're
19:55
Speaker 12: gonna be a do an eleven mile mountain bike race.
19:58
Speaker 12: So day nothing happened is riding now our Lake Preserve
20:01
Speaker 12: on Saturday and nothing at all.
20:03
Speaker 2: So I love what's going on with the preserve.
20:05
Speaker 4: Like you said, I mean to take that property because
20:07
Speaker 4: riding now our Lake is already great and people come
20:09
Speaker 4: from all around for that. But you add into that
20:11
Speaker 4: what you're doing around it, Joe, and it makes it
20:14
Speaker 4: even better.
20:16
Speaker 12: Yeah, without a doubt. And it's not only for you
20:19
Speaker 12: think of mountain bikers and everything. But yet I you know,
20:22
Speaker 12: my office is right at the twenty first Street and
20:25
Speaker 12: Second Avenue, and I count fifteen to twenty mountain bikes
20:28
Speaker 12: heading out there every day.
20:30
Speaker 5: Already. They love the trail system.
20:31
Speaker 12: And again in Canall Valley, we are blessed with some
20:34
Speaker 12: great trail systems, from the Meek's Mountain in Hurricane to
20:38
Speaker 12: riding now Our Lake here in Nitro to Canal State
20:42
Speaker 12: Forest out in the Charleston area. So we got a
20:45
Speaker 12: you know, a hat trick here for mountain bikers to enjoy.
20:49
Speaker 12: But also we've got hikers going out there all the time,
20:53
Speaker 12: We've got runners going out there all the time, and
20:56
Speaker 12: so it's just a fun way to be able to
20:58
Speaker 12: have some fun outside in this fresh air.
21:01
Speaker 4: Talking to Joe Stevens again from the City of Nitro
21:03
Speaker 4: nine to twenty nine to Day Island Show and five
21:04
Speaker 4: any Line brought to you a part by the all
21:06
Speaker 4: New Generations ford a hurricane visit generationsforard dot com and
21:10
Speaker 4: meteorologist Brian Hughes has done his job. Joseph, the weather
21:14
Speaker 4: on Saturday looks absolutely picture perfect. I know it's Wednesday.
21:18
Speaker 4: Things can change, but right now Saturday looking really really fine.
21:23
Speaker 12: Well, drop something in Brian's tip jar for me. I
21:26
Speaker 12: do appreciate that forecast. If people want to know how
21:31
Speaker 12: to get riding our lake and they haven't been out
21:34
Speaker 12: there and they want to come out there and enjoy
21:36
Speaker 12: a really fantastic free day, it really is a free
21:40
Speaker 12: day and to have some fun, all you got to
21:42
Speaker 12: do is come on Route twenty five or first Avenue
21:45
Speaker 12: in Nitro. Find twenty first street, turn on twenty first Street.
21:49
Speaker 12: There's only one way to turn on twenty first Street
21:52
Speaker 12: and follow it out eight tenths of a mile and
21:54
Speaker 12: you will see ride now. Our lake will have a
21:56
Speaker 12: sign pointing you to either parking or the shelter five
22:00
Speaker 12: and things. Like I said, we'll be getting underway at
22:03
Speaker 12: ten o'clock, but we'll be opening at nine o'clock for
22:05
Speaker 12: people coming out for information. Uh Lafleura Lucas, the executive
22:09
Speaker 12: director of the Canal Valley uh cd B, will be
22:12
Speaker 12: joining us out there so people can find out what
22:14
Speaker 12: else is going on throughout the Canal Valley area. We had,
22:19
Speaker 12: you know, some other information but was hey, you know
22:21
Speaker 12: you you you had major rains on from the Nitro
22:25
Speaker 12: police on midday a couple of weeks ago talking about
22:28
Speaker 12: safety and the e bikes and everything. Well, actually, we're
22:31
Speaker 12: gonna have the police department out there on Saturday, kind
22:35
Speaker 12: of giving a safety class, what you need to think about,
22:38
Speaker 12: what you got to look for and and that sort
22:41
Speaker 12: of thing. So uh Patrolman McClellan uh and we'll be
22:45
Speaker 12: out there and also UH Lieutenant Ricky he'll they'll be
22:49
Speaker 12: out there and just giving an up to date on
22:52
Speaker 12: that sort of thing.
22:53
Speaker 5: We will also have the fire department out.
22:55
Speaker 12: There talking about both safety and just uh safety on
23:00
Speaker 12: on bikes and everything. And we're also kind of showcasing
23:04
Speaker 12: the rescue side by side that the fire department has
23:08
Speaker 12: that the community pitched in and that's used for various
23:11
Speaker 12: things out at the lake on search and rescues and
23:14
Speaker 12: and that sort of thing. But it's just an information
23:19
Speaker 12: family day.
23:20
Speaker 5: Come out and have fun. It's all on the City
23:22
Speaker 5: of Nitro.
23:23
Speaker 4: All right, Joe, And you guys do a great job
23:25
Speaker 4: in your social media, so I'm sure you get information
23:27
Speaker 4: about it there. And again, tell us what time everything
23:30
Speaker 4: starts out there.
23:32
Speaker 12: Well, the ten k races and the five k races
23:35
Speaker 12: start at ten o'clock, so come on out.
23:37
Speaker 5: We'll be getting out there about eight.
23:38
Speaker 12: O'clock and you can come on out. Things will be
23:40
Speaker 12: happening nine o'clock. Really when it is when it gets
23:43
Speaker 12: underway with the kayaking and the paddle boats and that
23:46
Speaker 12: sort of thing.
23:47
Speaker 4: All right, Joe, keep doing great things here in the
23:50
Speaker 4: City of Nitro. Well, by the way, how are the
23:52
Speaker 4: Orioles doing. I haven't checked them out. How your o's doing?
23:56
Speaker 12: Lost three to one last night, scored one run in
23:59
Speaker 12: the first and Gilbert Logan, Gilbert for Seattle, kept US
24:03
Speaker 12: hit List until the eighth.
24:04
Speaker 5: So let's turn the page on that subject.
24:07
Speaker 2: Okay, well, all right, let's because I know you're a
24:10
Speaker 2: baseball guy. What about those Mountaineers, Hey, you know what
24:15
Speaker 2: I mean to tell you right now?
24:16
Speaker 12: In the honor of their win yesterday, we actually had
24:19
Speaker 12: a free movie in Living Memorial Park. We had it
24:21
Speaker 12: already schedule, but it worked out pretty well and we
24:23
Speaker 12: had stand loot last night in Living Memorial Park. But
24:26
Speaker 12: I tell you what, from top to bottom, one to nine,
24:29
Speaker 12: I love watching those kids hit. I mean, I love
24:32
Speaker 12: watching those kids hit. And I love McDougal out of
24:36
Speaker 12: Bridgeport coming in and just saying here it is guys,
24:39
Speaker 12: let's line it up.
24:40
Speaker 5: And they play.
24:42
Speaker 12: Like a team. It's not one person and that's it.
24:47
Speaker 12: They play like a team. And it's fun to watch
24:49
Speaker 12: two o'clock today against the tar Heels. Let's go Buntaineers.
24:52
Speaker 2: All right, Joe, appreciate you being here, my friend. We'll
24:55
Speaker 2: talk soon.
24:55
Speaker 5: Thanks a lot, see you, brother.
24:58
Speaker 4: Thanks Thanks Joe Stevens from the City of Nitro. We're
25:02
Speaker 4: going to be talking a little bit more about the Mountaineers.
25:05
Speaker 4: Jim Workman, who is with the West Virginia Sports Writers Association,
25:08
Speaker 4: also with the state's premier sports publication, Wally and Whips.
25:11
Speaker 2: He's going to join us a little bit later on
25:12
Speaker 2: and continue and talk about sports.
25:15
Speaker 4: But this is not really a sports story as much
25:17
Speaker 4: as it as a societal story or sociology story. Taylor
25:21
Speaker 4: Kennedy is writer for The Gazette Mail full disclosure used
25:26
Speaker 4: to work for US and Taylor wrote a article in
25:29
Speaker 4: the appeared about a week or so ago. I guess
25:32
Speaker 4: did the gazett mail that got a whole lot of
25:33
Speaker 4: attention about the state of high school athletes and how
25:38
Speaker 4: many people think we all love high school sports. We
25:41
Speaker 4: just came off a great state softball chairnament followed by
25:43
Speaker 4: a great baseball churnament. We all cheer on our teams
25:45
Speaker 4: and our respective schools and whatever, but a lot of
25:48
Speaker 4: people got some issues with high school athletics. We're going
25:51
Speaker 4: to talk to him about that coming up a little
25:53
Speaker 4: bit later on the show. Something else that's got a
25:55
Speaker 4: lot of people talking as data centers, and you know,
25:58
Speaker 4: I mean, it's all the discussion every where you go
26:00
Speaker 4: all over the sate of West Virginia literally all over
26:02
Speaker 4: the country. Hoppy Kerchival sat down with three people with
26:05
Speaker 4: three totally different perspectives on data centers. Chris Morris, director
26:09
Speaker 4: of the West Virginia Data Economy Office, Amy Margolis, executive
26:13
Speaker 4: director of Tucker United, and Dato Sleazi, Executive vice president
26:17
Speaker 4: of Energy Infrastructure Investments at QTS Data Centers. Hoppy, he's
26:21
Speaker 4: already talk to Chris and Amy. Those are the first two.
26:24
Speaker 4: The final one in the series of three will drop
26:28
Speaker 4: tomorrow night at Metro News Television at seven thirty. And again,
26:32
Speaker 4: three totally different perspectives. You watch, you make up your mind.
26:36
Speaker 4: The first two are available on Metro News Television. The
26:39
Speaker 4: third will drop tomorrow night at seven point thirty. Download
26:42
Speaker 4: the Metro News Television app and check it out. Presented
26:44
Speaker 4: by Hope Gas and by Career Industries, Tech says this
26:48
Speaker 4: needs to be addressed by all Democrats now. Nineteen year
26:50
Speaker 4: old Tyson Proper from Ohio charged and connection with alleged
26:54
Speaker 4: plot to attack Sunday's UFC event at the White House
26:57
Speaker 4: involved explosive leaden drones near the UFC arena and shooters
27:00
Speaker 4: targeting people as they fled. Proper listed GOP lawmakers from
27:04
Speaker 4: West Virginia's congressional delegation as the people were going to
27:07
Speaker 4: focus on, including Senators Jim Justice and Shelley Moore Capito.
27:11
Speaker 4: Representatives Carol Miller and Riley Moore. Proper also made sympathetic
27:14
Speaker 4: comments about Adolf Hitler in a group chat. And I
27:17
Speaker 4: will say this, It did not stop there because I
27:20
Speaker 4: was having a conversation with a House of Delegates member.
27:23
Speaker 4: Now out of respect for his privacy, because I don't
27:26
Speaker 4: know whether he's gone public with this, but there is
27:29
Speaker 4: at least one House of Delegates member that found himself
27:33
Speaker 4: in that chat as well.
27:33
Speaker 2: Appreciate the text.
27:34
Speaker 4: Tex says, is Trump really giving a rod three hundred
27:38
Speaker 4: billion dollars to Trump spend billions to attack Iran, use
27:41
Speaker 4: a large port of missiles, raise prices and inflation, and
27:44
Speaker 4: sacrificed American soldier lives just to give a ron at
27:47
Speaker 4: least three hundred billion dollars.
27:48
Speaker 2: WTF is wrong with him? Says a texture.

31:37
Speaker 4: To take on a team that beat them on Sunday night,
31:41
Speaker 4: and they got to beat them twice, North Carolina tar Heels,
31:44
Speaker 4: and of course that game is coming up this afternoon
31:46
Speaker 4: from Omaha. What's your take on this Mountaineer baseball team
31:50
Speaker 4: in general?
31:51
Speaker 16: Well, it was really encouraging when they came back and
31:54
Speaker 16: beat Troy twelve zero after dropping that game. I know
31:57
Speaker 16: there was a lot of WU fans it kind of
32:00
Speaker 16: got discouraged when they got beat by North Carolina. But
32:03
Speaker 16: they got a chance to beat Troy again, eliminate the Trojans,
32:09
Speaker 16: and now they get another shot at North Carolina, and
32:11
Speaker 16: as you said, they're gonna have to beat them twice.
32:14
Speaker 16: But you know, after they take care of them this afternoon,
32:17
Speaker 16: they got a day off and they play them Thursday,
32:20
Speaker 16: and I'm confident they're going to the weekend and play
32:24
Speaker 16: in the three game series to win it all.
32:26
Speaker 4: Man, what has this meant for the West Virginia sports programs?
32:33
Speaker 4: You know, particularly the baseball I mean, because look, Wu's
32:36
Speaker 4: had some good baseball teams over the years, but I
32:38
Speaker 4: mean they've struggled as well, and there was some talk
32:40
Speaker 4: at one time that they might even do away with
32:42
Speaker 4: the baseball program at West Virginia University. What kind of
32:45
Speaker 4: a shot in the rm GM has this been for
32:48
Speaker 4: WVU to be able to pull off this season, that
32:52
Speaker 4: they have do what they've never done before in hoping
32:54
Speaker 4: hosting rather a super regional in Morgantown. We all know
32:58
Speaker 4: how crazy that was, and then to make it to
33:00
Speaker 4: the College World Series.
33:01
Speaker 2: What does this meant?
33:02
Speaker 5: It's huge.
33:04
Speaker 16: You know, in our lifetime, West Virginia Mountaineer baseball was
33:08
Speaker 16: sometimes an afterthought. It almost seemed like a club program.
33:12
Speaker 16: They didn't have a nice stadium, you didn't hear of
33:16
Speaker 16: you didn't really pay attention to baseball. It was just
33:19
Speaker 16: a spring sport that you know, a lot of people
33:21
Speaker 16: didn't follow very closely. And that thing changed about fifteen
33:27
Speaker 16: years ago when they made a little more commitment to baseball.
33:31
Speaker 16: Of course, Oliver luck gets a lot of credit for
33:33
Speaker 16: that because you know, he knew, you know, if we're
33:36
Speaker 16: going into this Big twelve, we have to get serious
33:39
Speaker 16: about baseball, and they did. They made the commitment. Of course,
33:43
Speaker 16: Ken Kendrick is a big supporter, and he put his
33:47
Speaker 16: money where his mouth was. And you know, that ballpark's amazing.
33:52
Speaker 16: It's something that's gonna when you have the facilities, you
33:55
Speaker 16: can draw the players, and when you're on television and
33:58
Speaker 16: when you're in a Big twelve conference, you can recruit players.
34:02
Speaker 16: And that's what's happened. And of course it's very important
34:05
Speaker 16: to get a good coach get amazing. He was in
34:08
Speaker 16: there and now Saban so they're on their way and
34:12
Speaker 16: you know they're gonna be one of the top four
34:15
Speaker 16: our teams left in the nation playing this week, I believe,
34:19
Speaker 16: and you know, the nation has been able to watch
34:22
Speaker 16: it on national television, and you know, it's never a
34:25
Speaker 16: bad thing when you're ending a game with an exciting win,
34:29
Speaker 16: when they're playing Country Roads, for everybody in the nation
34:32
Speaker 16: to take part of that celebration, I think we've actually
34:36
Speaker 16: grown the fan base nationwide week.
34:39
Speaker 2: And every year.
34:40
Speaker 4: And we talked about this on Midday after every year,
34:43
Speaker 4: whether it's this College World Series, whether it's the NCAA Tournament,
34:46
Speaker 4: there always tends to be one or two teams that
34:50
Speaker 4: really stick out that you know, maybe people don't aren't
34:53
Speaker 4: aware of, don't have a rooting interest in, and they
34:56
Speaker 4: just kind of get behind them. And this has been
34:59
Speaker 4: this West Virginia program. I mean, of course everybody in
35:02
Speaker 4: West Virginia is cheering them on, but I mean they
35:04
Speaker 4: have been the talk of the nation. I mean, they've
35:06
Speaker 4: been the talk of ESPN, They've been talk of baseball
35:09
Speaker 4: fans everywhere. They've just kind of adopted this team as
35:14
Speaker 4: a Loyola from a couple of years ago or one
35:16
Speaker 4: of these other teams that makes the NCAA Basketball Tournament gym.
35:20
Speaker 16: You're absolutely right, and we've seen it happen a few times.
35:23
Speaker 16: I think in twenty ten when WVU went to the
35:26
Speaker 16: final four and Deyshaun Butler was there. They won the
35:31
Speaker 16: first game they went to the finals. But you know,
35:34
Speaker 16: that was that was a tremendous boost for the basketball
35:37
Speaker 16: program because of course that was Bob Huggins and that
35:40
Speaker 16: was a good story them coming home to West Virginia.
35:43
Speaker 16: And then we've had had it in football, you know
35:47
Speaker 16: when we played in some of the big Bowls that
35:50
Speaker 16: we've played in and you get the Owen Schmidt's and
35:52
Speaker 16: the Pat Whites become, you know, household names across the nation. Yeah,
35:59
Speaker 16: we've we've had to take to this. But the way
36:01
Speaker 16: the baseball tournament works, it's sustained for about three weeks. Great,
36:05
Speaker 16: So that's that's pretty amazing.
36:06
Speaker 5: Yeah, it is.
36:06
Speaker 4: We're talking to Jim Workman again, head of the West
36:08
Speaker 4: Virginia Sports Writers Association and also a wily, wimpy sports digest.
36:13
Speaker 4: I know that you're on the road and I'm not
36:15
Speaker 4: going to keep you long, but I did want to
36:16
Speaker 4: mention I know you guys are the sports writers are
36:18
Speaker 4: handing out postseason awards, and I know you're driving right now,
36:21
Speaker 4: so I don't expect you to, you know, to try
36:24
Speaker 4: to read those off to everybody. But this is award
36:26
Speaker 4: season right now.
36:27
Speaker 16: Right, that's right. So yeah, the high school season is
36:31
Speaker 16: over now, so we are finishing off our all state team.
36:35
Speaker 16: So let's see. We release the Double A All State
36:41
Speaker 16: Softball team today the single ay of the day before that.
36:45
Speaker 16: So tomorrow we'll be releasing the Triple A All State
36:48
Speaker 16: Softball and followed by Claude on Friday, and then Saturday
36:54
Speaker 16: we're going to be naming our softball Player of the Year,
36:57
Speaker 16: so same with baseball next week on that same schedule
37:01
Speaker 16: ab A, Triple A Suada and Player of the Year
37:04
Speaker 16: next week and then yeah, we'll be done for a
37:06
Speaker 16: little while and anticipating football season. It'll be honest, before
37:10
Speaker 16: we know it.
37:10
Speaker 2: Indeed, all right, and you got an event.
37:12
Speaker 4: I want to give you a chance to plug you
37:13
Speaker 4: get an event coming up Thursday night, talk about it.
37:16
Speaker 16: That's right, Thursday night. This is our eighth year doing
37:19
Speaker 16: a Wally's and Whimpy's Night on the third Thursday of
37:22
Speaker 16: each month at Buffalo Wild Wings and Cross Lanes. We
37:25
Speaker 16: always have some great prizes. We're going to have a
37:29
Speaker 16: grand prize of movie Night for two at the Regal
37:33
Speaker 16: Theater there in Cross lanes where you if you win
37:36
Speaker 16: that prize, you get two movie tickets, you get to
37:39
Speaker 16: pick your movie, you get a large popcorn and two drinks.
37:42
Speaker 16: That's a really cool prize. Then we've got some Dirty
37:45
Speaker 16: Birds tickets and just some miscellaneous things that we give
37:48
Speaker 16: away this fall. We're going to be giving away WU
37:51
Speaker 16: football tickets, Marshall football tickets. So always a good time
37:55
Speaker 16: out there, and Buffalo Wild Wings just recently did a
37:58
Speaker 16: renovation out there and it's a great place to watch games.
38:02
Speaker 16: So I invite people to come on out.
38:05
Speaker 4: All right, Jim, let's go Reds and let's go Mountaineers.
38:08
Speaker 4: Appreciate you being here, man, Thanks a.

Speaker 4: Good morning, Sarah, welcome.
42:16
Speaker 2: To the show.
42:17
Speaker 3: Good morning Dave. How are you?
42:18
Speaker 2: I am doing fine? Are you with the mountaineers in Omaha?
42:21
Speaker 3: I am. I'm not here with your old Greg Carey.
42:23
Speaker 3: I'm been out here since Wednesday, so it's been It's
42:26
Speaker 3: been quite the experience, but it's been a fun trip overall,
42:29
Speaker 3: and hopefully that can continue today.
42:30
Speaker 11: Now.
42:30
Speaker 4: If you're running with Greg carry, you're in bad company, man.
42:32
Speaker 4: I'm just saying, Okay, I'm just telling you.
42:35
Speaker 3: Well, someone that's worked with him for five years before
42:37
Speaker 3: this time, I'm well aware of.
42:38
Speaker 4: That, all right, all right, So, how do you like
42:41
Speaker 4: the chances the WV against North Carolina today?
42:43
Speaker 2: Taylor's I think.
42:46
Speaker 3: It's relatively well. I think it's a good chance, just
42:48
Speaker 3: because obviously this team that has a lot of resiliency.
42:51
Speaker 3: Their response has always been good throughout the season, and
42:55
Speaker 3: where they're at right now is very similar to where
42:57
Speaker 3: they were during the Morgantown Regional when they dropped that
43:00
Speaker 3: gating to Kentucky eleven to nine, and then rittled off
43:03
Speaker 3: three consecutive wins in the morgan Time Regional which led
43:06
Speaker 3: to the Super Regional victory that won by winning the
43:10
Speaker 3: twenty nine runs combined in two games. So I think
43:13
Speaker 3: the response and the resiliency is gonna be really key
43:16
Speaker 3: for this team. And you know, whoever they thought out
43:18
Speaker 3: on the mounts, you gotta have confidence regardless. So and
43:21
Speaker 3: right now they're playing with house money. You know, you're
43:23
Speaker 3: two and a one in the College World Series. You
43:26
Speaker 3: could not pass that up. If somebody told you that
43:28
Speaker 3: earlier in the season, I say, hey, you're gonna go
43:30
Speaker 3: two and a one with a chance to play for
43:32
Speaker 3: a national championship. You're one of the four teams remaining
43:36
Speaker 3: out in Omaha. You take that every.
43:38
Speaker 4: Single day, especially when they had that blowout regular season
43:40
Speaker 4: lost to Pitt. I mean, people would have thought that
43:42
Speaker 4: you were smoking something if you would if you just
43:44
Speaker 4: said that at that time.
43:45
Speaker 2: It's just been a great story all around. Taylor.
43:48
Speaker 4: You wrote a piece last week that has gotten a
43:50
Speaker 4: lot of attention and was in the Gazette mail and
43:52
Speaker 4: you say some of our high school athletes need a
43:56
Speaker 4: reality check.
43:57
Speaker 2: Explain that.
43:58
Speaker 3: Yeah, Dan, So, I think it'll lot of ways. As
44:01
Speaker 3: a society. I think this immediate gratification that has been
44:07
Speaker 3: continued to be a theme amongst not only adults, but
44:10
Speaker 3: also now tripled down to our youth has become more
44:15
Speaker 3: and more parent. What I mean by that is just
44:17
Speaker 3: look at social media. I got said in my column.
44:20
Speaker 3: If I've seen it once, I've seen a hundred times,
44:22
Speaker 3: maybe a thousand times, I don't know. Regardless, I've seen
44:26
Speaker 3: so many kids commit. Let me say it again, I've
44:30
Speaker 3: seen so many kids commit to a high school of
44:34
Speaker 3: where they are going, whether it's locally, whether it's statewide,
44:37
Speaker 3: whatever it may be. I've seen the graphics thousands of times,
44:42
Speaker 3: and a lot of these kids, you know, from what
44:45
Speaker 3: I've seen since I do Fallow High school sports very closely,
44:49
Speaker 3: a lot of these kids don't amount to this attention
44:52
Speaker 3: that they're drawing themselves. And when they do this, now
44:56
Speaker 3: you're like, Okay, then why are you bring all this
44:59
Speaker 3: that's interest yourself in here? Not able to back it up?
45:01
Speaker 3: So they're not able to back it up? What's the
45:03
Speaker 3: point of making the graphics stuff? Just continue to bring
45:05
Speaker 3: attention towards you, continue to bring this quote unquote immediate
45:09
Speaker 3: gratification that continues to be a playful thing, and just
45:13
Speaker 3: continue to get thrown around loosely in our society. I've
45:15
Speaker 3: just been I keep telling peop about. I've been holding
45:18
Speaker 3: onto that column for a while and I don't know
45:23
Speaker 3: when it was. I don't want to call anyone out sessions,
45:25
Speaker 3: not who I am, but I saw like full consecutive
45:28
Speaker 3: one in about a week span. I'm just like enough enough.
45:32
Speaker 4: Well, and there are sites and we all see them
45:34
Speaker 4: on social media, and I'm not begrudging anybody they can
45:37
Speaker 4: make money off of it. I'm talking about the people,
45:39
Speaker 4: but about transfer portals for middle school kids. This is
45:44
Speaker 4: going to be our current lineup, and we're doing transfer
45:46
Speaker 4: announcements Taylor transfer announcements.
45:49
Speaker 2: For high school kids.
45:51
Speaker 4: They've entered the transfer portal and they're going and I'll
45:54
Speaker 4: just make up a school. They're transferring from East Canau
45:57
Speaker 4: to West Canaw And I'm just totally making that up.
45:59
Speaker 4: But you get what what I mean by that.
46:01
Speaker 2: I mean, these are high school kids. We're talking about,
46:03
Speaker 2: the majority of whom are not going.
46:05
Speaker 4: To play a single down or a single moment or
46:09
Speaker 4: single inning of sports beyond high school.
46:11
Speaker 2: The majority the numbers don't lie.
46:13
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think a large part too. I also mentioned
46:16
Speaker 3: this on my column. I mentioned two specific athletes that
46:20
Speaker 3: that didn't announce where they're going on social media, but
46:23
Speaker 3: also have a legitimate like cases as to who they are.
46:27
Speaker 3: People know who they are. Now. I'm not saying that
46:30
Speaker 3: I'm agreeing with it. I'm just saying, for example, Natalie
46:33
Speaker 3: Smith transferred from South Charleston to Nitri for Ghost basketball,
46:37
Speaker 3: went on the lead into a state championship game. She
46:39
Speaker 3: was a household name at the Western guid Sports Writers
46:41
Speaker 3: Association's All State meetings. David Robinson, Junior one of the
46:45
Speaker 3: best running backs not only in the valley but also
46:47
Speaker 3: in the state. He's also a household name, and he
46:50
Speaker 3: committed and announce that he's transferring to Herbert Hoover. So
46:54
Speaker 3: you have certain situations where you have some kids that
46:58
Speaker 3: can back it up and then they can obviously a
47:01
Speaker 3: test to the success that they've had following a post
47:05
Speaker 3: like that. But at the same time, I'm not agreeing
47:07
Speaker 3: with it. And as I've said before in a previous column,
47:10
Speaker 3: you know you can. I'm fine if he transferred. I'm
47:14
Speaker 3: fine if he transferred, as long as you're doing it
47:16
Speaker 3: for the right reason. If you're just transferring just to transfer,
47:19
Speaker 3: you're just transferring just to get a ring. That's not
47:22
Speaker 3: coaches paying attention to that. I've spoken with several college coaches,
47:25
Speaker 3: not not just in this time frame, but just throughout
47:29
Speaker 3: throughout this whole transfer portal. Chaos and loyalty is so
47:34
Speaker 3: big in college sports. Regardless of what people think, it's
47:38
Speaker 3: still big, it's still relevant. And when they see these
47:42
Speaker 3: kids transferring to two or three different schools before this
47:45
Speaker 3: log got passed recently, they see that they pay attention
47:48
Speaker 3: to that, and these kids to get they can just
47:51
Speaker 3: get along and you know it's all fine and dandy. Sorry,
47:54
Speaker 3: news flash, it's just not going to be able to
47:57
Speaker 3: cut it whenever you whenever that day does come and
48:00
Speaker 3: you're thinking, Okay, am I going to get that college scholarship?
48:03
Speaker 3: Am I going to be able to go play at
48:05
Speaker 3: this university or play for this coach? Tough luck, because
48:08
Speaker 3: they do pay attention to that very closely.
48:10
Speaker 4: Have you gotten any blowback or any feedback from parents
48:13
Speaker 4: on this, because, I mean, let's face it, I mean,
48:15
Speaker 4: the kids aren't doing this without I mean, if they're
48:18
Speaker 4: responsible parents. If this is an issue, mommy or daddy,
48:21
Speaker 4: your grandparent or somebody's going to go and all right,
48:22
Speaker 4: take that down. I'm paying the cell phone bill. You
48:24
Speaker 4: take that down. So some of the parents are obviously
48:27
Speaker 4: on board with it. I just wonder have you gotten
48:29
Speaker 4: any any negative feedback from any parents or grandparents?
48:33
Speaker 3: You know, that's a great question, because I was actually
48:36
Speaker 3: thinking that yesterday. I started going through the different posts
48:39
Speaker 3: of people like sharing it and commenting on it and everything.
48:42
Speaker 3: I'll be surprised. I've only seen one of several thousand
48:50
Speaker 3: shares or several thousand views, I should say, I just
48:53
Speaker 3: haven't seen anything so now I'm thinking, Okay, are you
48:57
Speaker 3: just being a social media like, okay, war you're saying yeah,
49:02
Speaker 3: I was even the you're going to turn around and
49:03
Speaker 3: even go to do with your kid, or are you
49:05
Speaker 3: actually standing firm on two feet and making your own
49:08
Speaker 3: bed and saying yeah, I agree one hundred percent with
49:12
Speaker 3: what he's saying. And it's quite frankly that's for them
49:16
Speaker 3: to decide and the man above. But you know, I don't.
49:20
Speaker 3: You know, I've been very surprised in the fact that
49:21
Speaker 3: I have not seen it. I will say this though,
49:23
Speaker 3: and that's fun. That's a good question you brought up to.
49:26
Speaker 3: Someone brought this up, and it kind of made me chuckle.
49:29
Speaker 3: One person said, well, a lot of the parents that
49:33
Speaker 3: allow this type of behavioral or allow this type of
49:36
Speaker 3: stuff with their kids, are trying to live out their
49:38
Speaker 3: own dream they want to see. They want to see
49:41
Speaker 3: their life through their own kid, instead of the kid
49:43
Speaker 3: actually living their own life and being able to make
49:47
Speaker 3: their own decisions. So I thought that was really interesting.
49:50
Speaker 3: I actually kind of chuck with it, and then it
49:51
Speaker 3: just goes back to that, I know you're probably the
49:53
Speaker 3: same way, but you know, I had two parents, I
49:56
Speaker 3: have two parents I should say that were like, you're
49:59
Speaker 3: going to do this. You're not quitting, you're not leaving,
50:01
Speaker 3: you're not doing any of this. That's not who you are,
50:03
Speaker 3: that's not.
50:04
Speaker 5: Who we are.
50:05
Speaker 3: That that was a strict rule. I go all back
50:07
Speaker 3: to the fifth grade. I say that, saying, it's just
50:12
Speaker 3: one of those things where you just grew up and
50:13
Speaker 3: you're just like you were raised. And I know I'm
50:15
Speaker 3: only twenty six. I found fifty six.
50:17
Speaker 2: I say this, Hey, hey, there's nothing wrong with being
50:19
Speaker 2: fifty six.
50:20
Speaker 3: All right, No, nothing at all, No, not at all.
50:22
Speaker 4: I'll be fifty six in September. That's why I said, there,
50:25
Speaker 4: we go ahead.
50:26
Speaker 3: But it's just one of those things where you just
50:28
Speaker 3: grew up differently and now something has shifted. And again,
50:31
Speaker 3: I think it's this whole immediate gratification through social media
50:35
Speaker 3: that people are latching onto, like bear with honey. So
50:39
Speaker 3: that's just where I think it's all originating from. But yeah,
50:42
Speaker 3: some of these parents that are just living their lives
50:43
Speaker 3: with their kids, that's who means the reality check in
50:46
Speaker 3: all honesty.
50:46
Speaker 4: All right, Taylor, I got to leave it there. Let's
50:48
Speaker 4: go Mount of the Ears. Enjoy your time out in Omaha.
50:51
Speaker 4: Hope we get a couple of Mountaineer victories and if so,
50:54
Speaker 4: we'll have you back again real soon.
