Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are out of the gates on sport and state.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Good morning to you. Hope everyone's off to a great
- 0:05Speaker 1: start on this Thursday. He's Chad Withrow. I'm Jonathan Hutton.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We are presented by Hard Rock Bet. This is Hutton
- 0:11Speaker 1: and Withrow. Chad, good morning to you, man.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Good morning, Hutton. Good to be here on a Thursday.
- 0:15Speaker 2: That's right. That's right.
- 0:17Speaker 1: So it's not good to be Ken Ward's family. You know,
- 0:21Speaker 1: you've got the sister who's on Instagram posting that she's
- 0:25Speaker 1: being flooded with hate mail, with threats, which is never cool.
- 0:30Speaker 1: You know, Cam Ward gets a chance to talk about it, Chad,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and says people are weird. That's literally just what that
- 0:35Speaker 1: was his statement on it. I don't know if this
- 0:38Speaker 1: is a big deal or not. I would hope that
- 0:40Speaker 1: if it is a huge issue, that authorities get involved
- 0:42Speaker 1: with this because people are stupid. But if it's one
- 0:47Speaker 1: or two deals where someone's cussing out a family member
- 0:50Speaker 1: because Cam Ward plays like crap, I would say that
- 0:55Speaker 1: comes with the territory, especially whenever you have a dad
- 0:58Speaker 1: that's known for sliding up in DMs as well, going
- 1:00Speaker 1: after fans.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's usually one or two people. I mean, I've
- 1:05Speaker 2: got a guy on my Instagram and Twitter that'll just
- 1:08Speaker 2: message me at 2.36 a.m. after a Titans loss, and
- 1:13Speaker 2: he'll just post something like, you're a bitch at 2.36,
- 1:18Speaker 2: or I know about you, or just like weird veiled threats,
- 1:24Speaker 2: or I know where you go. And things like this.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Have I turned him in yet? Yeah, I don't know
- 1:31Speaker 2: his name because he hides behind an anonymous something.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Oh, of course.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Have I turned him in yet? I have not. Should I? Maybe.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I don't know. It's for your entertainment. Do I believe
- 1:40Speaker 2: Cam Ward's sister that this is happening? I mean, probably.
- 1:45Speaker 2: There's probably some weird stuff that's sent to her based
- 1:48Speaker 2: on Cam Ward.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I have no reason to doubt it. I'm not going
- 1:51Speaker 1: to call her a liar. that this is not happening.
- 1:55Speaker 1: It probably is to some extent. And I would say
- 1:57Speaker 1: whoever's doing that is a complete idiot. I would also
- 2:00Speaker 1: say that while this probably is true, this also then
- 2:05Speaker 1: becomes a convenient part of the narrative about Kim Ward
- 2:08Speaker 1: and protecting him in that, oh my gosh, guys, it's
- 2:11Speaker 1: just a game.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Take it easy. Stop going after the family. It's only
- 2:15Speaker 2: a game.
- 2:16Speaker 1: And I agree with that too. I would say from
- 2:20Speaker 1: her perspective, it's much different. than what we're seeing from
- 2:24Speaker 1: the Titans right now. And we have seen a different
- 2:28Speaker 1: swing from the Titans in their approach with Cam Ward.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I was all about Robert Sala and his message in
- 2:36Speaker 1: the preseason.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Chad, this was August 17th. I wanted to get that.
- 2:39Speaker 1: This isn't back at the draft. This isn't the day
- 2:42Speaker 1: he was hired. This is on August 17th on the
- 2:45Speaker 1: Rich Eisen Show where he is asked about the approach
- 2:48Speaker 1: to Cam Ward and why Sala is going to get
- 2:51Speaker 1: along with Brian Dable so well.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Times in this in this day and age where you
- 2:56Speaker 4: know uh you'll find that these kids are raised to
- 2:59Speaker 4: to kind of coddle in the sense that you you
- 3:01Speaker 4: know being honest with kids is kind of you might
- 3:05Speaker 4: lose a kid if you're too honest with them so
- 3:06Speaker 4: you got to sugarcoat everything and kind of coddle them
- 3:08Speaker 4: but uh you know we we've always taken the approach
- 3:11Speaker 4: dayball too that uh that they'll they'll respect you more
- 3:14Speaker 4: if you tell them the truth tell them where they
- 3:16Speaker 4: are tell them what they need to get done tell
- 3:18Speaker 4: them whether they're right or wrong and uh And, you know,
- 3:21Speaker 4: you can't be afraid about, you know, we're not trying
- 3:23Speaker 4: to make friends, but in the process, you're going to
- 3:26Speaker 4: end up finding that yourself, yourself in a very honest,
- 3:29Speaker 4: open relationship, um, that gets the most out of each other.
- 3:32Speaker 4: And I think that's where Dave all strength is with Cameron.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So that's, I love everything about that answer, right? I, we,
- 3:40Speaker 1: we discussed it on the show at length. Again, go
- 3:41Speaker 1: back to, uh, uh, August 19th is our first show.
- 3:44Speaker 1: We discussed it there. Um, But Chad, later in this interview,
- 3:50Speaker 1: I was watching this last night, later in this interview,
- 3:52Speaker 1: he is asked about something that he would like to
- 3:56Speaker 1: focus on or do different than the way he approached
- 3:59Speaker 1: something with the New York Jets. And the first thing
- 4:01Speaker 1: he says is stop caring about trying to shape the
- 4:08Speaker 1: narrative and focus on winning. Here's Salah on The Rich
- 4:12Speaker 1: Isaac Show.
- 4:13Speaker 4: I've been vocal with regard to you know, trying so
- 4:17Speaker 4: hard to, to control narrative, uh, to, to keep a
- 4:20Speaker 4: positive light around the New York jets. It was, it
- 4:22Speaker 4: meant well, you know, I was, I was trying to
- 4:25Speaker 4: try my best to, to, to work with the people
- 4:28Speaker 4: around the building, uh, outside the building to, to make
- 4:31Speaker 4: sure that the messaging around the team was in a,
- 4:34Speaker 4: a way that, uh, allowed us to go operate when
- 4:36Speaker 4: in reality, none of that shit matters. Uh, when you win,
- 4:39Speaker 4: you're a winner. When you lose, you're a loser. And then,
- 4:41Speaker 4: and the narrative will be whatever that result is. And, uh,
- 4:45Speaker 4: And so focusing on our process, focusing on our players,
- 4:47Speaker 4: focusing on us is the only thing that matters. And
- 4:51Speaker 4: if you want the narrative to change, you've got to
- 4:52Speaker 4: win football games.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah, if you want the narrative to change, you've got
- 4:56Speaker 1: to win games. That is where Cam Ward is right now.
- 4:58Speaker 1: But you wouldn't know it based on Sala this week. Again,
- 5:02Speaker 1: August 17th to the final week of September. It hasn't
- 5:06Speaker 1: been that long. And here is Robert Sala on the
- 5:10Speaker 1: OTP on TennesseeTitans.com.
- 5:13Speaker 2: With Taylor Zarzer.
- 5:14Speaker 1: When asked about the recent game, this is on Monday
- 5:17Speaker 1: or Tuesday of this week, Chad, asked about the approach
- 5:21Speaker 1: with Cam Ward.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Hold on, even as you set this up, let me
- 5:24Speaker 2: break in here for a second. When you said the
- 5:26Speaker 2: name Taylor Zarzer, I already have a little bit of
- 5:29Speaker 2: a preview about how this is going to go and
- 5:31Speaker 2: how it's going to be set up. and how probably
- 5:34Speaker 2: things are going to change because we're talking about the
- 5:38Speaker 2: homer of all homers of any broadcast, worse than the
- 5:41Speaker 2: guys at USC who thought that it was just a
- 5:44Speaker 2: knee slide by Dante Moore when he was nearly decapitated
- 5:47Speaker 2: on the field. Oh, guys, that was fine. Nothing to
- 5:49Speaker 2: see here. So I think I have an idea of
- 5:51Speaker 2: how this clip is going to go, but go ahead.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Please set it up.
- 5:55Speaker 1: But Sala, he's not worried about shaping the narrative, but
- 5:58Speaker 1: he certainly is when it comes to the quarterback that
- 6:01Speaker 1: is playing like crap.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And I think that that's what everyone is wondering, Coach,
- 6:06Speaker 2: the growth you're seeing from your quarterback moving forward.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Because I know you still have a lot of confidence
- 6:11Speaker 4: in him.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 4: He's a young man. And I'm not giving him an out.
- 6:18Speaker 4: And I don't want to say there's a grace period.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Because at the end of the day, we're all looking
- 6:25Speaker 4: for production. And we're all looking for that glimmer of hope.
- 6:28Speaker 4: And I think he provides it. If you take off
- 6:31Speaker 4: the Jada glasses and you really watch his development over
- 6:34Speaker 4: the past couple of years, the young man's getting better.
- 6:36Speaker 4: He's made of the right stuff. You know, we just
- 6:40Speaker 4: got to continue getting him opportunities in those situations. It's
- 6:43Speaker 4: how many two-minute situations did he have a year ago?
- 6:46Speaker 4: You know, and this was a great opportunity for him
- 6:50Speaker 4: in week two, another great opportunity last week. And eventually
- 6:54Speaker 4: these things are going to be finishing off with touchdowns.
- 6:56Speaker 4: And we're not going to think twice about it.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I mean, I absolutely am thinking twice. I haven't seen
- 7:01Speaker 1: improvement here. And I have seen a change in the
- 7:06Speaker 1: path and the tone of Robert Sala fast. I pointed
- 7:09Speaker 1: this out in the final preseason game where he's talking
- 7:11Speaker 1: about their floor.
- 7:12Speaker 2: This is our floor.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I mean, you can go basement levels if you want.
- 7:16Speaker 1: You can have parking garages that go beneath the building here.
- 7:19Speaker 1: That's where they're headed. And we're 20 games in here.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I think Sala's viewing this as a rookie season for Ward.
- 7:27Speaker 1: He's played 20 games now. He's 3-17, and one of those,
- 7:31Speaker 1: DeMarcato or whatever his name is in Arizona, fumbled at
- 7:34Speaker 1: the one-yard line. This has been awful. And for a
- 7:41Speaker 1: coach that was, well, we're not going to coddle. That
- 7:44Speaker 1: is what has been going on here. Instead of just
- 7:47Speaker 1: answering the questions about footwork, what's going on if he's
- 7:53Speaker 1: grasping the offense, those are all fair questions. And Kaharski's
- 7:56Speaker 1: done a great job asking questions. Others have too. And
- 7:59Speaker 1: it's the same repetitive, it's almost shell shock. Because I
- 8:04Speaker 1: don't think Salah actually wants to say that everything's just
- 8:08Speaker 1: going great, because it's not. And he knows that he's
- 8:12Speaker 1: not going to have a third opportunity. Some don't get
- 8:14Speaker 1: a second. Dable wants to be a head coach again.
- 8:18Speaker 1: He needs Cam Ward to work out. But They know
- 8:25Speaker 1: that it's about Week 18 instead of Week 1. That's
- 8:27Speaker 1: how bad it was in the preseason. They were just
- 8:29Speaker 1: trying to shape the narrative again. And I hear two
- 8:32Speaker 1: different coaches speaking when I hear Salah right now.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Yes. Very different mindsets and approaches to how to win
- 8:40Speaker 2: in the NFL and how to treat players. Initially, the
- 8:44Speaker 2: clips that you laid out there very nicely, Hutton, was
- 8:47Speaker 2: we're not going to coddle. We're going to be honest
- 8:49Speaker 2: with them. We found that. A professional, honest approach with
- 8:52Speaker 2: the player is way better than telling them lies and
- 8:55Speaker 2: telling them things that aren't true. Now you fast forward,
- 8:58Speaker 2: and there's a grace period. Five weeks. We've got to
- 9:02Speaker 2: find out what's going on. All these different things. Now,
- 9:05Speaker 2: I'll give him credit that he didn't pretend that he's
- 9:08Speaker 2: done some good things, like Taylor Zarzer probably would have
- 9:11Speaker 2: preferred he pretended that he's actually been decent at times.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Or throwing out some sort of stat about, well, when
- 9:16Speaker 2: you look at him versus whatever, BS. He's been bad.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Team's been bad. He's been bad, too. And you've got
- 9:22Speaker 2: to get to the root of that. So he didn't
- 9:24Speaker 2: pretend that. It was just more of, there's a grace period.
- 9:27Speaker 2: New coaches. We're here now. We've got to see how
- 9:30Speaker 2: things go. And this and that. I do think Paul
- 9:33Speaker 2: Kaharski and others have done a good job asking good questions.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I thought Jared Stillman was doing a good job asking
- 9:38Speaker 2: the right questions until he got booted from his media availability.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Speaking of the booting from the media credential, Hudney, here
- 9:45Speaker 2: would be my question I would want. We're not there
- 9:47Speaker 2: every day. And I would want Paul Kaharski or someone
- 9:50Speaker 2: to ask. And I hope this gets clipped and thrown
- 9:53Speaker 2: out there and Titans media can ask this question. Are
- 9:57Speaker 2: you fully allowed to make a switch at quarterback position?
- 10:00Speaker 2: Or is there a checks and balances here when it's
- 10:02Speaker 2: the starting quarterback? Do you have to get approval from
- 10:05Speaker 2: Burke Nihill through Amy Adams Strunk? Do you go to
- 10:09Speaker 2: him as the mouthpiece in Nashville of ownership to get
- 10:13Speaker 2: approval to bench Cam Ward for Mitch Trubisky? Or is
- 10:17Speaker 2: this a unilateral decision? We could go back and play
- 10:21Speaker 2: our clip yesterday of Shane Beamer, and I love the answer.
- 10:24Speaker 2: When the guy's like, hey, how many people are going
- 10:26Speaker 2: to be involved in the decision to bring back Dylan Stewart?
- 10:29Speaker 2: Who makes that call? Me. Me was the answer from
- 10:33Speaker 2: Shane Beamer. I decide when he's back on the team.
- 10:36Speaker 2: I decide when he plays again. Love or hate Shane Beamer,
- 10:39Speaker 2: I freaking love that answer. From a head coach. Yeah,
- 10:42Speaker 2: it's on me. And good or bad, whether you guys
- 10:45Speaker 2: like it or not, you may hate it because we've
- 10:47Speaker 2: got a great talent who's not playing. I'm the one
- 10:50Speaker 2: who makes the decision. No one else. And no one's
- 10:52Speaker 2: going to tell me how to make the decision. Is
- 10:54Speaker 2: Robert Sala answering a question that way? If he's asked it?
- 10:58Speaker 2: Or is it, no, I've got to go get approval?
- 11:01Speaker 2: Or would he answer it honestly, one way or the other?
- 11:03Speaker 2: It's a question I'd like to have asked. Because of
- 11:06Speaker 2: all the finger pointing that's going on within the organization,
- 11:09Speaker 2: left and right, with it going from GM getting fired
- 11:12Speaker 2: to a coach getting fired to blaming somebody else, that's
- 11:16Speaker 2: where you put the blame on ownership if that's the answer.
- 11:19Speaker 2: If the answer is the coach can't make his own
- 11:21Speaker 2: decision on a quarterback, then you go back to ownership
- 11:24Speaker 2: and say, why? You're not doing it the right way
- 11:28Speaker 2: if they don't have unilateral who plays in the games,
- 11:32Speaker 2: when and where decision-making abilities. As a coaching staff. I
- 11:36Speaker 2: get the sentiment of the question. I do.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Because the marketing efforts for this stadium are all about
- 11:43Speaker 1: number one, Cam Ward. I can't tell you, just from
- 11:49Speaker 1: the players that we know, that are... I know the
- 11:52Speaker 1: voice of Jeffrey Simmons and Cam Ward.
- 11:55Speaker 2: That's it, man.
- 11:57Speaker 1: That's literally the voices I would recognize. That has changed
- 12:02Speaker 1: a lot. There's been a lot of change within the organization.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I would say this, though. It is week three, and
- 12:09Speaker 1: Brian Dable deserves more time with this. I only say
- 12:15Speaker 1: that because he was hired specifically to turn this around.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And what a failure this would be so fast to
- 12:24Speaker 1: turn on and go to Trubisky in week three. Keep
- 12:28Speaker 1: in mind, Vrabel waited until week six to make a
- 12:31Speaker 1: switch with Mariota. You know, he couldn't wait to do that,
- 12:35Speaker 1: but he waited. I think it's a little early. It's
- 12:39Speaker 1: not far off, though, man. And those two sentiments will
- 12:43Speaker 1: collide at some point because this doesn't look to be
- 12:45Speaker 1: getting better. I mean, the guy doesn't throw a pass
- 12:48Speaker 1: attempt further than five yards. I mean, the numbers here,
- 12:54Speaker 1: I've got one big thing coming up later. I mean,
- 12:57Speaker 1: at one point, the Giants held a 28-minute to 9-minute advantage.
- 13:02Speaker 1: in time of possession in this game this past week.
- 13:06Speaker 1: In three first halves this season, the Titans averaged two
- 13:10Speaker 1: first downs and four points. I mean, it is atrocious. Now,
- 13:16Speaker 1: Trubisky gives them a better chance to win, but longevity
- 13:19Speaker 1: for this coaching staff and what they're wanting, they need
- 13:23Speaker 1: to turn this dude around. And I would say it's
- 13:27Speaker 1: a handful more games.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I'm not saying I think.
- 13:30Speaker 1: He deserves more time, I just think the coaching staff
- 13:34Speaker 1: is viewing this like we've got to get something rolling
- 13:37Speaker 1: and hope that something sticks. Because if not, Chad, the
- 13:39Speaker 1: locker room starts to call BS on the whole all gas,
- 13:43Speaker 1: no break. It was Vrabel that came in and told
- 13:46Speaker 1: Kevin Dodd, what are you doing sitting there? This is
- 13:50Speaker 1: for football players because Kevin Dodd didn't show up to OTAs.
- 13:53Speaker 1: First day of camp, get out in the hallway. We'll
- 13:55Speaker 1: talk to you later. He set the tone. But it
- 13:58Speaker 1: still took him six weeks to make the quarterback switch.
- 14:01Speaker 1: I just view it through J-Rob and Vrabel and compare
- 14:05Speaker 1: it to this, knowing that they've got a veteran who
- 14:08Speaker 1: nobody really thinks is great by any means. But do
- 14:11Speaker 1: I think he can run the offense and complete a
- 14:12Speaker 1: pass for five yards in the end zone?
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely.
- 14:16Speaker 1: He doesn't throw that pick. The Titans win that game,
- 14:20Speaker 1: is what I'm saying. It's been really bad, and the
- 14:24Speaker 1: excuse-making is getting old. And it's making the coaches look stupid.
- 14:28Speaker 1: With what they're saying.
- 14:28Speaker 2: 100%. And we just got done on Monday. We were
- 14:32Speaker 2: in Knoxville. We got done talking about how inept Tennessee's
- 14:35Speaker 2: offense was at moving the football against Texas, who might
- 14:38Speaker 2: be the best defense in America or one of the
- 14:40Speaker 2: three best. Tennessee, with a week to prepare in a
- 14:44Speaker 2: scripted series after Texas went down and scored, drove the
- 14:47Speaker 2: length of the field and ended up kicking a field
- 14:48Speaker 2: goal and went right down with a week to prepare.
- 14:51Speaker 2: With a week to prepare for the Giants' defense in
- 14:54Speaker 2: a little bit of rain, let's not act like it
- 14:56Speaker 2: was a monsoon– and awful conditions. The Titans managed one
- 15:01Speaker 2: first half first down, and that was with about two
- 15:04Speaker 2: and a half minutes left in the half before they
- 15:07Speaker 2: got their first first down. That takes ineptitude to a
- 15:10Speaker 2: different stratosphere. I would say fair in the question I'm
- 15:14Speaker 2: asking and waiting to ask that question. If you're Paul Koharski...
- 15:17Speaker 2: or anyone else. I hope someone sees this discussion and
- 15:21Speaker 2: it gives them an idea of what to ask. Maybe
- 15:24Speaker 2: you don't ask it right now. But when, Hutton, in
- 15:28Speaker 2: Baltimore this week, they get Houston's defense after that. They
- 15:32Speaker 2: go to Indianapolis. Let's go ahead. We don't pussyfoot around
- 15:36Speaker 2: on this show. Line of demarcation. When they lose to
- 15:39Speaker 2: Baltimore and he looks bad against Houston's defense and they
- 15:42Speaker 2: go to Indian and lose and they're 0-2 in the division,
- 15:45Speaker 2: they play the Cleveland Browns at home. On Sunday, October 25th,
- 15:50Speaker 2: Mitchell Trubisky needs to be the starting quarterback. By then,
- 15:53Speaker 2: at the very latest, and that is the furthest point
- 15:57Speaker 2: away that I would say they need to bench Cam Ward.
- 15:59Speaker 2: That is the spot to do it. I think that's
- 16:03Speaker 2: right around the area I would target. I would.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Because look, this is also, it's a great question because
- 16:10Speaker 1: the marketing aspects of the stadium, from the ownership view,
- 16:14Speaker 1: is all about Cam. Everything they're doing has his name, image,
- 16:18Speaker 1: likeness all over it.
- 16:19Speaker 2: All over it.
- 16:21Speaker 1: And so you're saying months before opening, you're going to
- 16:24Speaker 1: pull all that? It's a great topic. Because the Titans
- 16:30Speaker 1: are paying a lot of different people outside of the
- 16:33Speaker 1: team to market what they're doing now, including some of
- 16:36Speaker 1: the media members. They're trying to control this narrative And
- 16:42Speaker 1: Sala's like, hey, I learned from my– I don't want
- 16:44Speaker 1: to focus on the narrative. I want to focus on what–
- 16:47Speaker 1: then we're going to get to that. But when you
- 16:50Speaker 1: can't complete a simple pass that Clay's– Clay made me laugh.
- 16:53Speaker 1: He's like, my son could complete this pass left-handed.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Yeah. That's awful, man. I don't know about that. I
- 17:01Speaker 2: have never seen Lincoln throw a football. I know he's
- 17:03Speaker 2: good at catching the football. He's a receiver, not a quarterback,
- 17:07Speaker 2: so I can't speculate on whether or not he could
- 17:10Speaker 2: make that throw. Here's what Lincoln would do, though. He
- 17:12Speaker 2: wouldn't throw it. He wouldn't throw that interception with that
- 17:17Speaker 2: time left. He would know there's two timeouts left. This
- 17:19Speaker 2: one is in regards to the third quarter miss. The
- 17:21Speaker 2: Cardinal take, he's wide open. Yeah, yeah. Yes, I think
- 17:28Speaker 2: actually he could make that throw too. But again, Lincoln
- 17:31Speaker 2: would know not to throw that ball in harm's way
- 17:34Speaker 2: in that setting and just run it where he had
- 17:37Speaker 2: room on that last interception to lose the game. It's
- 17:41Speaker 2: been a train wreck, Hutton, and I think Titans fans,
- 17:45Speaker 2: if you're spending any money with this team, deserve the
- 17:47Speaker 2: right to know ultimately who makes that call and who
- 17:51Speaker 2: makes that decision. I don't think it's out of line
- 17:54Speaker 2: at all for someone to ask the question, Do you 100%
- 17:56Speaker 2: get the sole decision-making ability to make a change at quarterback?
- 18:02Speaker 2: Given all the marketing efforts of Cam Ward as the
- 18:06Speaker 2: number one pick and moving into a new stadium and
- 18:09Speaker 2: everything that The business side of it and the marketing
- 18:12Speaker 2: side of it has put into that, do you, Robert Sala,
- 18:16Speaker 2: get to sit there and not make a call to
- 18:18Speaker 2: the owner and not say anything else and not have
- 18:20Speaker 2: any input and make that move when it is time?
- 18:23Speaker 2: Whether that be mid-game, whether that be preparing for a
- 18:26Speaker 2: game the next weekend, whenever that time comes, are you
- 18:30Speaker 2: the one making the call? Please, God, somebody that's in
- 18:33Speaker 2: the Titans press corps ask that question.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Yep, and hey, final thought on this. Everything goes through ownership,
- 18:40Speaker 1: which is Burt Nihill. He speaks on behalf of ownership
- 18:42Speaker 1: both publicly and within the building. I mean, it permeates
- 18:45Speaker 1: through every decision. And right now, every.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Decision is about the move to the stadium.
- 18:51Speaker 1: It was just odd preseason when they're marketing, join us
- 18:54Speaker 1: for the final week one at Nice. I'm like, how
- 18:57Speaker 1: about your two first round picks from April? You've got
- 19:01Speaker 1: a former number one overall pick at quarterback that you're
- 19:03Speaker 1: trying to make happen. You've got supposedly a better offensive line,
- 19:07Speaker 1: which they do have. You have Jeffrey Simmons, who's the
- 19:09Speaker 1: best player at his position in the league. I mean,
- 19:12Speaker 1: there's so many different stories. And they're marketing the final
- 19:15Speaker 1: year at a dilapidated stadium that they can't wait to
- 19:19Speaker 1: move out of.
- 19:20Speaker 2: They can't wait to implode. It's just, the whole thing's bizarre.
- 19:24Speaker 2: But I'm with you, man. The time is coming.
- 19:27Speaker 1: And you want to see, I'm very interested in the reactions.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I'm very interested in the reaction for everybody that's been
- 19:35Speaker 1: taking up for this just abysmal play.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Oh, I'm going to go ahead and give you the
- 19:40Speaker 2: reaction from people that are still on the side of Cam,
- 19:43Speaker 2: which are fewer and further between right now. It is. Yeah,
- 19:46Speaker 2: you tell them, Sala. You go, man. You control that team.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Bench his ass. Let's go. Let's go. Mitch Trubisky era
- 19:53Speaker 2: starts right now. That's what those fans are going to do.
- 19:56Speaker 2: They're going to agree wholeheartedly with whatever decision the team makes,
- 20:00Speaker 2: and they're going to sit with their head in the
- 20:02Speaker 2: sand and not understand reality of where this team is
- 20:06Speaker 2: and what's happening. Unfortunately, The loud minority of people online
- 20:11Speaker 2: that are doing that, that are going after people who
- 20:14Speaker 2: have legitimate questions about how this team is run and
- 20:18Speaker 2: about Cam Ward, those people hurt the Tennessee Titans because
- 20:22Speaker 2: there is someone in that damn upstairs office that is
- 20:25Speaker 2: sitting there and reading those tweets aloud to their boss
- 20:29Speaker 2: and say, look, guys, we still have the public. Look
- 20:31Speaker 2: at Titans Twitter. They still have our back. Look at
- 20:34Speaker 2: these people on Facebook backing us with everything we do. See,
- 20:38Speaker 2: it's not all bad. Let me get you a dossier
- 20:41Speaker 2: of all the morons who continue to spout exactly what
- 20:44Speaker 2: we're trying to sell to the public. And we are
- 20:46Speaker 2: here to tell you as loud and vociferously as possible,
- 20:50Speaker 2: they are lying to you. And people that say that
- 20:54Speaker 2: and defend Cam Ward are liars. They are lying to you.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Your two eyes will not deceive you when you watch
- 21:03Speaker 2: this team. Your two ears, if you're a season ticket
- 21:07Speaker 2: holder like my sister and going to the Eagles-Titans game
- 21:10Speaker 2: and damn near getting arrested because of the Eagles fans
- 21:13Speaker 2: in your section and overflowing the stadium, will not deceive you.
- 21:19Speaker 2: The organization lies. These fans lie, and if you are smart,
- 21:23Speaker 2: you're watching this show, and you're understanding, we're not going
- 21:27Speaker 2: to lie to you. The Titans are a train wreck,
- 21:30Speaker 2: and until they acknowledge that, it's never going to change.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Instead of all gas, it's all ass for what we're seeing.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Now that's a shirt. That's a t-shirt. Much like our
- 21:44Speaker 2: perfect Ted Morgan shirt, the all ass shirt is going
- 21:47Speaker 2: to be a huge hit. All ass. Titans with a
- 21:50Speaker 2: Titans logo underneath it. Tighten up. All gas, all gas
- 21:55Speaker 2: to all ass. In five weeks. In literally five weeks.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I was laughing when people were responding to me and saying,
- 22:02Speaker 2: this performance is complete ass. Who is it that is
- 22:07Speaker 2: eye ass in our fantasy league? Oh, man, we got
- 22:12Speaker 2: to find that person and give them a shout out.
- 22:13Speaker 2: But yes, I do laugh at that team name. Every
- 22:15Speaker 2: time I see it. I think it's Shane Trey. Nice.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Who's doing it?
- 22:19Speaker 1: Hey, when we come back, the Titans and Derrick Henry.
- 22:23Speaker 1: The Titans told Henry to hit the road. That's what
- 22:25Speaker 1: he's saying this week when he's talking to reporters in Baltimore.
- 22:29Speaker 1: We were there.
- 22:30Speaker 2: We lived it.
- 22:32Speaker 1: We covered it and behind the scenes. We'll talk about
- 22:35Speaker 1: it next here on Hunting With Row. Coming up in

- 23:35Speaker 1: So, by the way, this offer is available through October
- 23:38Speaker 1: 4th there. Chad, what is Derrick Henry claiming? You sent
- 23:42Speaker 1: this to the group, and I was fascinated by it.
- 23:45Speaker 1: What he's saying publicly about the Titans right now.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Well, look, I think everything right now when your team
- 23:51Speaker 2: is as miserable as the Titans are feels like salt
- 23:54Speaker 2: on an open gashing wound. A Civil War wound, if
- 23:57Speaker 2: you will, Hutton. That they're just pouring salt onto over
- 24:00Speaker 2: and over again. That's what this feels like. This also
- 24:04Speaker 2: feels like an athlete who is hyping himself up a
- 24:07Speaker 2: little bit for a game against the team. And a
- 24:10Speaker 2: little bit of revisionist history there. in regards to the
- 24:13Speaker 2: Titans and the situation at the time when Derrick Henry
- 24:15Speaker 2: walked to go to Baltimore. But here was Derrick Henry.
- 24:19Speaker 2: If you need any added motivation, if you're the Baltimore
- 24:22Speaker 2: Ravens and you're Derrick Henry, especially when you see what
- 24:24Speaker 2: he's done since leaving the Titans, here's Derrick Henry when
- 24:28Speaker 2: asked about his departure from the Tennessee Titans. Nah, they
- 24:32Speaker 2: shit me out. Really?
- 24:34Speaker 5: I mean, I know I say it like that, but
- 24:36Speaker 5: it's always, but no, they didn't offer not at all.
- 24:39Speaker 2: How did that make you feel after everything you gave
- 24:41Speaker 2: to that franchise? I mean, I think it was bittersweet.
- 24:48Speaker 5: I think I knew the right ones on the wall
- 24:50Speaker 5: throughout that season, and they were ready to move on. And,
- 24:53Speaker 5: you know, good things don't last forever, so it was
- 24:55Speaker 5: time for me to find a new home. And I
- 24:58Speaker 5: knew what that home I wanted it to be, and
- 25:01Speaker 5: it was here.
- 25:01Speaker 2: So God is good.
- 25:03Speaker 5: Derek?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Chad, as I recall, they didn't offer because it would
- 25:09Speaker 1: have been insulting based on his value. And I mean,
- 25:14Speaker 1: just how everything played out that season. His best game
- 25:18Speaker 1: was his final game as a Titan that year, where
- 25:21Speaker 1: he just runs all over Jacksonville. 19 carries, 153 yards,
- 25:27Speaker 1: and a touchdown. But let me go through the season
- 25:30Speaker 1: and the whole storyline and see if you agree. The
- 25:35Speaker 1: Titans had just been boat raced by Houston. He was
- 25:37Speaker 1: held under 50 yards rushing. He had 88 yards rushing
- 25:41Speaker 1: against Seattle.
- 25:42Speaker 2: And this was the 2023 season. 2023. So this is
- 25:44Speaker 2: Rand Carthon after John Robinson fired in December of 2022.
- 25:48Speaker 2: And Gravel's final year. Yes.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Held under 50 yards to Houston, 88 yards to Seattle,
- 25:53Speaker 1: 34 yards to Miami. He rushed for 100 against Indianapolis,
- 25:58Speaker 1: 76 against Carolina, 38 against Jacksonville, 9 yards against Houston,
- 26:02Speaker 1: 24 against Tampa Bay, 63 yards against New Orleans. 26
- 26:06Speaker 1: yards against Cleveland. He had some good games. He rushed
- 26:09Speaker 1: for over 1,000 yards that year. But this was the
- 26:14Speaker 1: topic of the season. He's 29 years old. Do you
- 26:17Speaker 1: pay a running back who's about to be 30 years old? Clearly,
- 26:22Speaker 1: he has not lost any of the tread on the tires.
- 26:26Speaker 1: But He knew, and the Titans knew, the Titans gave
- 26:30Speaker 1: him the mic to speak to the crowd after his
- 26:33Speaker 1: final game at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I was at that game.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Thank you for the greatest eight years of.
- 26:43Speaker 2: My life, the ups and the downs.
- 26:45Speaker 5: Y'all been there for everything, been there personally, watching me.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Grow as a person and a player, always supporting me.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I love y'all. I love seeing those pictures in the stadium.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Hopefully, y'all was an inspiration to all the young kids
- 26:58Speaker 3: and everybody in the community.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Just thank y'all so much.
- 27:03Speaker 1: That was class on both sides, by the way. That's
- 27:08Speaker 1: really how I think he feels about the organization. You know,
- 27:10Speaker 1: the whole talk about he's going to retire a Raven
- 27:12Speaker 1: or whatever. That's the team he's with. You know, he's
- 27:16Speaker 1: got a chance to go win a Super Bowl. That's
- 27:18Speaker 1: what he deserved. And at the time, I was, I mean,
- 27:21Speaker 1: the guy, why stick around and go through this mess,
- 27:25Speaker 1: you know?
- 27:25Speaker 2: Well, and it felt like if you were going to
- 27:29Speaker 2: re-sign him, and I remember having this discussion at the time,
- 27:32Speaker 2: it felt like if you were going to re-sign him,
- 27:33Speaker 2: it was almost a ceremonial act. of we want to
- 27:36Speaker 2: keep this guy a lifelong Titan because of what he
- 27:38Speaker 2: had done and his greatness in his time there with
- 27:41Speaker 2: the team and not necessarily a strategic move for the team.
- 27:45Speaker 2: The strategic move would have been to trade him late
- 27:48Speaker 2: 2023 at the trade deadline, which maybe the Titans had
- 27:51Speaker 2: an opportunity to do that and get something decent in
- 27:54Speaker 2: return if you knew you weren't going to offer him.
- 27:56Speaker 2: But instead of doing that, they let the season play
- 27:59Speaker 2: out and then let him walk. Which, hindsight being 2020,
- 28:03Speaker 2: if you could go back, yeah, you'd love to have
- 28:05Speaker 2: this Derrick Henry that's played these last three years on
- 28:08Speaker 2: your team, racking up records and climbing the top ten
- 28:11Speaker 2: rushing leaders and doing all those things for your team,
- 28:15Speaker 2: even if your team's bad. And you know that he
- 28:17Speaker 2: would make you better, but would Derrick Henry make this
- 28:19Speaker 2: team better to the point of being a contender? No.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Not where they've been. And Hutton, if we know anything
- 28:24Speaker 2: about Derrick Henry, what is he first and foremost? He's
- 28:27Speaker 2: a winner. He's a winner, and he wants to go
- 28:29Speaker 2: to an organization and a team that gives him a
- 28:32Speaker 2: chance to win a Super Bowl. He's done that with Baltimore.
- 28:35Speaker 2: He hasn't won a Super Bowl yet, but he's gone
- 28:37Speaker 2: to an organization and a team that is capable of
- 28:40Speaker 2: getting there. He knew that was not going to be
- 28:42Speaker 2: the case with the Tennessee Titans, and I think both
- 28:44Speaker 2: sides knew that was what was best for him. Look,
- 28:49Speaker 2: he wasn't angry when he was answering the question there
- 28:51Speaker 2: with the media roundup and everything. It's not like he's
- 28:54Speaker 2: going in, oh my gosh, this organization completely screwed me
- 28:57Speaker 2: over or anything. but I do think it's just interesting
- 29:00Speaker 2: on top of all the other things with the Titans
- 29:02Speaker 2: that this is also a part of this matchup this Sunday. Yeah.
- 29:05Speaker 1: And, uh, look, uh, anytime touchdown, how about let's, let's
- 29:09Speaker 1: go for two on that. Uh, possibly look, he, he
- 29:12Speaker 1: went from 2023, 24, the season with the Titans final season.
- 29:15Speaker 1: He averaged 68 yards per game. The next year he
- 29:19Speaker 1: averaged 113 yards per game. Number one in the AFC.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Now that's the Saquon Barkley year. Um, Uh, he, he
- 29:27Speaker 1: nearly rushes for 2000 yards since he's been there. He's
- 29:31Speaker 1: the first NFL running back to rush for 1,900 yards
- 29:35Speaker 1: twice ever. That gets overlooked because he didn't hit 2,000.
- 29:40Speaker 1: He's rushed for 1,500 yards. He's got 300 right now.
- 29:44Speaker 1: A 70, 80-yard touchdown run. He had 45 more carries
- 29:47Speaker 1: his first year in Baltimore. 754 more yards. And nearly
- 29:53Speaker 1: two yards per carry more. And ends up being a
- 29:56Speaker 1: second-team All-Pro. that's tread on the tires, to say the least.
- 30:02Speaker 1: The dude's a machine. And I think it tells you
- 30:04Speaker 1: how bad the offensive line was. I don't think he's
- 30:06Speaker 1: putting up those numbers here. I think the perception is
- 30:09Speaker 1: he's just going to be Megatron. That's not the case.
- 30:12Speaker 1: He was getting hit in the backfield a lot that
- 30:14Speaker 1: final season. He's got to push up front with a
- 30:17Speaker 1: better offensive line in Baltimore immediately. And we certainly know
- 30:22Speaker 1: the offensive line issues and the quarterback woes. that this
- 30:25Speaker 1: team has gone through. I don't think it was going
- 30:28Speaker 1: to improve all that much based on the Titans' decision
- 30:30Speaker 1: to keep him, had that been the case.
- 30:33Speaker 2: It's definitely a situation where it did not work out
- 30:37Speaker 2: well for the Titans. But it worked out well for
- 30:40Speaker 2: the Ravens, and it worked out well for Derrick Henry.
- 30:42Speaker 2: So two out of three ain't bad. You know what?
- 30:46Speaker 2: That's no solace for Titans fans hunting, but as Meatloaf
- 30:50Speaker 2: once famously said, two out of three ain't bad. It
- 30:52Speaker 2: worked out for two out of three of the sides,
- 30:54Speaker 2: just not the Titans. That's part of the narrative with
- 30:56Speaker 2: that too, though, isn't it? The fact he went to Baltimore.
- 30:59Speaker 2: There have been plenty of former Titans who have gone
- 31:02Speaker 2: on to be Baltimore Ravens, right? And that stings a
- 31:06Speaker 2: little bit more.
- 31:07Speaker 1: To Titans fans, too. And you remember, I mean, Titans
- 31:10Speaker 1: fans were pissed off whenever they let him walk. We
- 31:14Speaker 1: took calls all over the place. You know, we're hearing
- 31:16Speaker 1: about it on Twitter. Tennessee Power Hour, you know?
- 31:20Speaker 2: Yeah. And look, rightfully so. Oh, yeah, sure. I mean,
- 31:25Speaker 2: he's going to go down as an all-time great. I mean,
- 31:28Speaker 2: if he plays another three years, maybe the greatest ever. Yeah.
- 31:31Speaker 2: When all is said and done, especially if he can
- 31:32Speaker 2: win a Super Bowl in one of those years. I mean, it's... Yes, it's,
- 31:37Speaker 2: it's understandable. Titans fans are bitter about it. It's also
- 31:41Speaker 2: completely understandable for Derek Henry side and the Ravens that
- 31:44Speaker 2: things have worked out the way they are because the
- 31:47Speaker 2: Titans have been an inept organization this whole, this whole
- 31:50Speaker 2: time since he left.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Two NFL rushing titles while he was with the Titans
- 31:54Speaker 1: and the 2020 NFL offensive player of the year. Um,
- 31:58Speaker 1: Not offensive player of the SEC. We wouldn't use that
- 32:01Speaker 1: description for Jared Curtis by any means. But when we
- 32:03Speaker 1: come back, can he talk? We'll find out if he
- 32:08Speaker 1: can speak.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Yes. We'll find out.
- 32:11Speaker 1: We discussed the fact that he's on mute right now
- 32:15Speaker 1: and why. That's next here on Huntington Withrow presented by

- 33:27Speaker 2: The Grundy County auction is happening over here all the time.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Was that John Michael Montgomery? I think so. I believe
- 33:34Speaker 2: you are correct, yes. John Michael Montgomery, also the author
- 33:37Speaker 2: of Life's a Dance, which is one of my favorite
- 33:40Speaker 2: 90s country songs. Who did Watermelon Crawl? I think JT
- 33:42Speaker 2: will know this. Oh my gosh, that's a great question.
- 33:47Speaker 2: If you drink, don't drive, do the Watermelon Crawl. Nope.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Who was that? Tracy Bird. Tracy Bird. No one, AI
- 33:54Speaker 2: did not write that one. Tracy Bird looks like a
- 33:57Speaker 2: younger Ted Cruz, by the way. I'm looking at him
- 34:00Speaker 2: right now. I mean, this is Ted Cruz in a
- 34:01Speaker 2: cowboy hat with watermelons behind him when you search him.
- 34:04Speaker 1: I don't think we ever used that on the Lene
- 34:06Speaker 1: Kukua Country Music Game of the Week with Paul. I
- 34:08Speaker 1: don't know how that got overlooked, but I don't recall
- 34:15Speaker 1: using that.
- 34:15Speaker 2: We should have. I feel like that's one that even
- 34:17Speaker 2: Paul would have known. Had we done the verse from
- 34:20Speaker 2: Watermelon Crawl? I don't know about that. But also, there
- 34:23Speaker 2: were some that I'm like, how have you never crossed
- 34:25Speaker 2: paths with this song at any point, walking through a store,
- 34:28Speaker 2: doing anything in the South? He had no knowledge.
- 34:32Speaker 1: I don't know why I remember this, but you were
- 34:34Speaker 1: out this day, we did this game. And he did
- 34:38Speaker 1: not know the Tim McGraw, I like it, I love it.
- 34:41Speaker 1: He thought that one was fake. Have you been to
- 34:43Speaker 1: a Preds game?
- 34:45Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 34:45Speaker 2: I've been to 100 Preds games. And you've never heard
- 34:48Speaker 2: them play this when they score a goal? It's remarkable,
- 34:51Speaker 2: his lack of knowledge. It's so great. He doesn't even
- 34:54Speaker 2: hear it in passing anywhere. It's crazy.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Also, what you can't hear is Jared Curtis's voice, the
- 35:02Speaker 1: starting quarterback of the Vanderbilt Columns. This is something I
- 35:05Speaker 1: just haven't noticed. We went to the practice. I know
- 35:08Speaker 1: there's a policy where the freshmen don't speak during camp
- 35:11Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Whatever. They're getting acclimated to camp. Whatever they're going to
- 35:16Speaker 2: say is the reason.
- 35:18Speaker 1: But I guess this is just a program-by-program deal where
- 35:24Speaker 1: they get to choose who's going to speak instead of
- 35:27Speaker 1: the SEC doing this. I didn't know that, but if
- 35:30Speaker 1: it was an SEC, if it were a rule, we
- 35:34Speaker 1: would certainly hear it. And thank you to Adam Sparks
- 35:37Speaker 1: for pointing this out. I mean, this is crazy.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and Adam Sparks says, five-star starting quarterback Jared Curtis
- 35:44Speaker 2: has not been made available to media since spring. Interview
- 35:47Speaker 2: requests have been declined. Curtis is regularly interviewed in high school.
- 35:50Speaker 2: In fact, no Vandy quarterback has been available for interview
- 35:53Speaker 2: since April 4th. The Doors have played four games already.
- 35:56Speaker 2: There is no policy or rule that requires Clark Leader
- 36:00Speaker 2: Vanderbilt to put the quarterback on any podium or make
- 36:03Speaker 2: them available for interview. It's very, very odd behavior. because
- 36:08Speaker 2: this is not just a five-star guy. It's the number
- 36:10Speaker 2: one quarterback in the country. He's getting paid multiple millions
- 36:14Speaker 2: of dollars to play football at Vanderbilt. The dude started
- 36:18Speaker 2: a Nate Bargatze movie, a theatrical release, and he had
- 36:21Speaker 2: a speaking part in the movie, but yet he's not
- 36:24Speaker 2: allowed to speak to the media after a game that
- 36:26Speaker 2: he starts. On the flip side, Tennessee has made Faison
- 36:30Speaker 2: Brandon available after every game. He started every game this year,
- 36:34Speaker 2: and he's made available in practice. He's made available leading
- 36:36Speaker 2: up to games. He was unavailable on Saturday after the
- 36:40Speaker 2: loss only because he was one of three players receiving treatment.
- 36:44Speaker 2: After the game where he exited the game, he was
- 36:45Speaker 2: getting medical treatment. Now, I will say, Hutton, for this
- 36:48Speaker 2: week's purposes, I don't know if you've seen the latest
- 36:50Speaker 2: availability report, but Jared Curtis is questionable with an undisclosed
- 36:54Speaker 2: injury for Saturday against Georgia. So that would be why
- 36:58Speaker 2: he's not available right now. They don't want... him to
- 37:00Speaker 2: be seen limping into a press conference or anything like that,
- 37:04Speaker 2: or they don't want him talking about any injury. I
- 37:06Speaker 2: would understand that, but to not let him do interviews
- 37:09Speaker 2: is very strange.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Now, is Adam saying that no quarterback has talked or
- 37:17Speaker 1: just Curtis?
- 37:18Speaker 2: No quarterback has been made available since April 4th. That
- 37:22Speaker 2: is nuts, man. So even Blaise Berlowitz, who, by the way,
- 37:26Speaker 2: they tried to make a receiver in this last game.
- 37:28Speaker 2: I don't know if you've seen that, but they're trying
- 37:29Speaker 2: to also play him at receiver now that Curtis is starting.
- 37:34Speaker 2: And there it is. No QB has been made available
- 37:38Speaker 2: since April 4th. The Doors have played four games. I just,
- 37:42Speaker 2: if you're looking at possible reasons for this, I mean...
- 37:45Speaker 2: The most likely one is usually the one. I don't
- 37:48Speaker 2: think they trust him to do interviews. Well, I think
- 37:51Speaker 2: part of it, too. I think Clark Lee wants to
- 37:54Speaker 2: control every message, which is smart. I mean, there's a
- 37:56Speaker 2: reason Nick Saban didn't allow assistant coaches to do interviews, right?
- 38:00Speaker 2: And then you didn't hear from them once they got there.
- 38:03Speaker 2: But that doesn't sound like.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Clark, though.
- 38:05Speaker 2: But what's the reason? Yeah, well, what would the reason be?
- 38:09Speaker 1: It doesn't sound like Clark to mute someone because he
- 38:11Speaker 1: certainly didn't do that with Pavia. He let the guy
- 38:13Speaker 1: just free flow, you know, like freestyle. And he was
- 38:18Speaker 1: mic'd up. Even Clark Lee's mic'd up for the SEC
- 38:23Speaker 1: show behind the scenes stuff, you know, where he's just
- 38:26Speaker 1: free flowing too. I don't think that's– that doesn't sound
- 38:30Speaker 1: like Clark Lee to me. So I'm leaning more towards
- 38:33Speaker 1: what you're saying. I would also say, like, they can
- 38:36Speaker 1: just lean back on this quarterback battle And say week
- 38:39Speaker 1: to week, we don't know who the starter is. They
- 38:40Speaker 1: can't do that anymore, right? And also, if I'm an
- 38:44Speaker 1: NIL sponsor, I want him to be forward-facing, to be
- 38:48Speaker 1: the face of the program if I pay for it.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Diego Pavia, for all of his public-facing warts and missteps
- 38:56Speaker 2: he's made and what he said, he was halfway to 50. almost,
- 39:00Speaker 2: when he was playing for Vandy. So there's a difference
- 39:03Speaker 2: between a guy who's... So is the backup quarterback. I know, yeah,
- 39:08Speaker 2: I don't get that. But Jared Curtis is 19. He
- 39:11Speaker 2: can do interviews. He's done interviews. Again, he was in
- 39:14Speaker 2: a Nate Bargatze movie. The only... The thing that I
- 39:18Speaker 2: can think is that they don't quite trust him to
- 39:21Speaker 2: not give coach speak or say the wrong thing about
- 39:24Speaker 2: what they're doing in practice. I don't know. Or about
- 39:26Speaker 2: who the quarterback is going to be. and all those
- 39:29Speaker 2: different things. They just don't trust him yet to do
- 39:31Speaker 2: that and talk about the team, which again, I will
- 39:35Speaker 2: say it pisses off the media. I don't understand it
- 39:39Speaker 2: because he is the playing face of that organization right
- 39:43Speaker 2: now with Vanderbilt. Also, there's a reason Nick Saban didn't
- 39:49Speaker 2: allow assistant coaches to speak. Because when he was coaching Alabama,
- 39:53Speaker 2: he was the lone voice. And his players said nothing
- 39:56Speaker 2: when they were made available for media because they knew
- 39:59Speaker 2: they'd be in trouble if they said anything of note
- 40:01Speaker 2: or value. I'm watching Buster Faulkner, Florida's offensive coordinator, doing
- 40:06Speaker 2: a press conference yesterday. And I'm thinking, this is why
- 40:09Speaker 2: Nick Saban wouldn't allow it. Because this dude's going to
- 40:11Speaker 2: get hired away immediately. He is killing it at Florida
- 40:15Speaker 2: right now. And I watched this young guy interviewed and
- 40:17Speaker 2: his philosophy on offense and everything. And I'm thinking everybody
- 40:21Speaker 2: who's got a possible coach opening right now is watching
- 40:24Speaker 2: that damn video and saying, hire this dude immediately to
- 40:27Speaker 2: come coach my program. He will be gone after this
- 40:30Speaker 2: year and be a head coach somewhere else.
- 40:33Speaker 1: I also would lean towards this theory that Clark Lee
- 40:37Speaker 1: doesn't want him to be the face of the program
- 40:39Speaker 1: until he is the captain leader of the program. until
- 40:44Speaker 1: he claims it. I think that's part of it. He
- 40:47Speaker 1: doesn't want this guy speaking on behalf of the team
- 40:50Speaker 1: when the leader is not at the quarterback spot. That
- 40:53Speaker 1: guy will eventually be him. But it's not like he
- 40:56Speaker 1: just comes in and everyone rallies around Curtis the way
- 40:59Speaker 1: they did Pavia. You see what I'm saying there? They
- 41:02Speaker 1: certainly didn't do it with Berlowitz. They haven't done it yet.
- 41:06Speaker 1: The moment hasn't happened yet. When it does, he's going
- 41:09Speaker 1: to do the sideline interview. Like, if they go down
- 41:11Speaker 1: and if they upset Georgia, you don't think we're going
- 41:14Speaker 1: to see him on ESPN doing an interview?
- 41:17Speaker 2: I mean, can you imagine the Vanderbilt SIDs being forced
- 41:20Speaker 2: to wave off the ESPN cameras? Holly Rose told no. No. No.
- 41:26Speaker 2: I know we're celebrating with our team. Jared can't speak
- 41:29Speaker 2: right now. Holly, we're out of here. Look, I know
- 41:32Speaker 2: people at Nashville Christian that know Jared Curtis and his
- 41:35Speaker 2: background and everything very well. I'll say this for the kid. He–
- 41:41Speaker 2: He's not going to be scared. He's going to play
- 41:43Speaker 2: in this game, I think, on Saturday. He is fearless,
- 41:45Speaker 2: and he thrives on the trash talk. He thrives on
- 41:49Speaker 2: people booing him and what's going to be said about
- 41:52Speaker 2: him from Georgia fans. Now, I don't think any of
- 41:54Speaker 2: that's going to matter when he faces Georgia's defense as
- 41:57Speaker 2: a freshman quarterback, but it's not going to be because
- 42:00Speaker 2: he's going to turtle and cower in that environment with
- 42:03Speaker 2: fans yelling and cursing at him the whole time in Athens.
- 42:06Speaker 2: He'll be just fine when it comes to that stuff. Again,
- 42:10Speaker 2: I don't fully comprehend why Clark Lee would do this.
- 42:15Speaker 2: I also know that Clark Lee is no coward and
- 42:18Speaker 2: that he's got a reason for it. I don't think
- 42:21Speaker 2: it's out of fear. I'm trying to speculate as to
- 42:24Speaker 2: what that reason would be. Also, I totally understand the
- 42:28Speaker 2: media side of this. If you follow that team... and
- 42:30Speaker 2: you're covering them, or you're a local Nashville reporter, you
- 42:33Speaker 2: want to have the opportunity to talk to Jared Curtis
- 42:34Speaker 2: to hear his voice. It took four weeks to hear
- 42:36Speaker 2: about it, though. That's what's crazy to me. It took
- 42:37Speaker 2: Adam Sparks four weeks in. Well, and Adam Sparks who
- 42:41Speaker 2: covers Tennessee. I know. It's almost when you see the
- 42:45Speaker 2: response from local Nashville people, it's like Adam was the
- 42:48Speaker 2: plant to bring it to everyone's attention within that network, right?
- 42:53Speaker 2: I guess he's still with Gannett, I'm guessing, and then
- 42:56Speaker 2: every other reporter.
- 42:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Started responding and chiming in on how ridiculous it is also.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Speaking of how ridiculous something is, Hutton, we've uncovered a
- 43:05Speaker 2: photo of a young Ted Cruz. Oh, this is old
- 43:09Speaker 2: Tracy Bird. I've got to send you one where he
- 43:11Speaker 2: looks like Ted Cruz. I'll get that to you. He's
- 43:14Speaker 2: aged into Ted Cruz. Oh, no, no, no. The photo
- 43:19Speaker 2: that I saw of Tracy Bird looks like young... Ted Cruz.
- 43:25Speaker 2: This is older. Now, he does still look a little
- 43:27Speaker 2: bit like Ted Cruz here. He does, yeah. But young,
- 43:30Speaker 2: if you search watermelon crawl and find it, it's uncanny,
- 43:35Speaker 2: this photo. I'm going to get this to Lutz right
- 43:38Speaker 2: now so you can see what I'm talking about.
- 43:41Speaker 1: I was driving through Georgia in late July on a
- 43:45Speaker 1: day hot enough to make the devil sigh. I saw
- 43:47Speaker 1: a homemade sign writing in red, Ryan County Watermelon Festival ahead.
- 43:53Speaker 2: I mean, how drunk were the writers of this song
- 43:57Speaker 2: just when they wrote it? We need a VH1 behind
- 44:00Speaker 2: the music on the writing of Watermelon Crawl to see
- 44:04Speaker 2: just how messed up everyone was. Zach Turner and Buddy
- 44:07Speaker 2: Brock were the lyricists here. So Buddy Brock, and I
- 44:11Speaker 2: know a lot about the Watermelon Crawl. Heck, I could ask.
- 44:13Speaker 2: You know what? I'll ask his son right now. Caleb
- 44:15Speaker 2: Brock was one of my best friends at Mount Joe
- 44:17Speaker 2: High School. Really? Buddy's son. Buddy has a huge house.
- 44:20Speaker 2: in Mount Jewett, very accomplished songwriter for country music, and
- 44:26Speaker 2: his son, Caleb Brock, one of my good friends. Oh,
- 44:28Speaker 2: look at him. This is Ted Cruz. Look at that.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Tell me that's not young Ted Cruz. Amazing. Good pull
- 44:34Speaker 2: there from Lutz. Excellent work.
- 44:36Speaker 1: She rocked back on her heels, dropped down to her knees,
- 44:38Speaker 1: crawled across the floor, then she jumped back on her feet.
- 44:41Speaker 1: She wiggled and she jiggled, beat all you ever saw, said,
- 44:44Speaker 1: this is how you do the watermelon crawl. I mean,
- 44:48Speaker 1: it's just straight smut is what this is, a watermelon crawl, apparently.
- 44:51Speaker 2: JT, was this a big song for your early development
- 44:56Speaker 2: where you grew up out on the sticks? Was this
- 44:59Speaker 2: one that was well-celebrated? It was huge on the farm.
- 45:01Speaker 2: I know that. JT probably lost his virginity listening to
- 45:04Speaker 2: this song. Yes.
- 45:05Speaker 3: You know, speaking of watermelon, the wife has started drinking
- 45:10Speaker 3: watermelon juice and tequila. So you want to talk about
- 45:13Speaker 3: a good kicker. For a Saturday evening. I can only
- 45:18Speaker 3: imagine what it tastes like. I haven't tried it. You're
- 45:21Speaker 3: a vodka guy, right? Yeah, I'm a vodka guy. It's
- 45:25Speaker 3: something that was popped up on TikTok or whatever those
- 45:27Speaker 3: ladies watch. It's a little bit of Grand Marnier, tequila,
- 45:32Speaker 3: and watermelon juice.
- 45:34Speaker 2: It's got to be awful. I love watermelon. I will say,
- 45:38Speaker 2: and I'm going to give this to you now because...
- 45:40Speaker 2: I got probably five years ago a thing of watermelon
- 45:44Speaker 2: moonshine because I do like watermelon a lot. And I've
- 45:48Speaker 2: had one sip out of it and have not gone
- 45:51Speaker 2: back to it. So that's now for your wife, JT.
- 45:53Speaker 2: I'll give that to you. You can gift her some
- 45:55Speaker 2: watermelon moonshines. She's such a big watermelon fan. Appreciate it.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Watermelon crawl. Yeah, watermelon crawl. That was the theme of
- 46:03Speaker 2: JT's prom. Where he grew up. Instead of Under the Sea,
- 46:10Speaker 2: this year's theme will be Tracy Bird's Watermelon Crawl.
- 46:13Speaker 1: What was your prom song or whatever? Mine was You
- 46:17Speaker 1: Look Wonderful Tonight. Everybody wanted John Mayer. John Mayer won
- 46:20Speaker 1: the vote and then some teacher decided on behalf of
- 46:23Speaker 1: the class of 2002 it was going to be whatever
- 46:26Speaker 1: it is, Wonderful Tonight.
- 46:27Speaker 2: Prom is supposed to be this big event in one's life.
- 46:31Speaker 2: I've got to be honest, you get... Dark spots, blank
- 46:35Speaker 2: spots in your memory. Yeah. I remember so little about prom.
- 46:40Speaker 2: I don't know what the theme was. I want a microwave.
- 46:42Speaker 2: We had it at the Opryland Hotel in like one
- 46:45Speaker 2: of the ballrooms at Opryland Hotel. I'm pretty sure is
- 46:48Speaker 2: where we were. I remember going to Melting Pot in Nashville,
- 46:51Speaker 2: the fondue restaurant beforehand. I think there was a limo involved,
- 46:56Speaker 2: but I'm not positive. We took a stretch hummer to
- 46:58Speaker 2: Murfreesboro for dinner. That's incredible. From McMinnville to Murfreesboro? Yeah.
- 47:03Speaker 2: A white stretch hummer. uh and then uh i want
- 47:06Speaker 2: a microwave you blast in the watermelon crawl the whole
- 47:09Speaker 2: way to murfreesboro incredible.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Uh a guy named ashley moser was prom king rightfully so.
- 47:15Speaker 2: A dude named ashley with any any inspiration for later
- 47:19Speaker 2: for ashley schaefer bmw when he's coming down with the
- 47:23Speaker 2: name ashley oh.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Man i've got colby king dances ass off that night
- 47:27Speaker 1: i know that long live the king um My wife.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Angie just said, I drink that watermelon moonshine, hearing what
- 47:35Speaker 2: we're talking about. So sorry, JT, I can't give you
- 47:37Speaker 2: the watermelon moonshine. Apparently that's for Angie. I had no idea.
- 47:40Speaker 1: I don't think the flavor of watermelon tastes like watermelon.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Like the Jolly Rancher, the moonshine. It's just like a,
- 47:47Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm not a big fan of watermelon
- 47:50Speaker 1: because I don't think there's much taste to it.
- 47:52Speaker 2: There's a guy who goes to my church who his
- 47:54Speaker 2: business is flavors. And I've talked to him about it before.
- 47:58Speaker 2: I'm like, Interesting. He's like, yeah, we make, they like
- 48:01Speaker 2: scientifically engineer butterscotch, watermelon, caramel, whatever it is, like artificial
- 48:08Speaker 2: flavoring that goes into drinks, goes into beers, goes in.
- 48:11Speaker 2: I mean, everything you can think of. He's like, yeah,
- 48:14Speaker 2: my company makes flavors. But it's just not a business
- 48:17Speaker 2: you think about.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Like there's a company that does flavors for all of
- 48:21Speaker 1: these different products. And everyone has a different palette, yet
- 48:25Speaker 1: everyone can. somehow figure this out the way it tastes
- 48:28Speaker 1: for like the you know the you got the the
- 48:30Speaker 1: the wine deal where it's like if everyone has a
- 48:32Speaker 1: different palate how do you know what's great and what
- 48:35Speaker 1: you know it's great i'm fascinated by all that and
- 48:37Speaker 1: the flavor thing is interesting just how they nail it
- 48:40Speaker 1: probably not using anything natural at all yeah um Chad,
- 48:46Speaker 1: I've got to get your thoughts on Major League Baseball,
- 48:49Speaker 1: the Braves, how that game turned out last night.
- 48:52Speaker 2: I'm getting lit up like a pinata online for my
- 48:56Speaker 2: stance on this, too. I want to hear your stance.
- 48:58Speaker 2: You're going to find it hilarious as to why people
- 49:01Speaker 2: are lighting me up because they are completely misinterpreting which
- 49:05Speaker 2: team I root for. I'll explain. Okay.
- 49:10Speaker 1: That's straight ahead here on Hutton & Withrow. We are
- 49:13Speaker 1: presented by Hard Rock Bets.
