- 1:10Well, now it's time for us to go ahead and take a listen
- 1:14to an episode of Pursuit. There were seven missing episodes between last week's show
- 1:19and this week's, so here from April eleventh of nineteen fifty is Pursuit and
- 1:26the Man who confessed Pursue Pursuit, a criminal strikes and fades quickly back into
- 1:49the shadows of his own dark world, and then the men from Scotland yard
- 1:55the dangerous, relentless Pursuit. When men hunts man. Now it had to
- 2:07cost you a start as the famous inspector Peter Black of Scotland. John,
- 2:10we bring you tonight's story of violence and murder, pursuit and the man who
- 2:15confessed. Yes, sir, oh, good morning Marvin. Would you step
- 2:45in for a moment. Good morning, sir, Good morning Martin. Everything
- 2:57quiet last night? I said, good. I heard a rather good one
- 3:00last night, really, sir, Yes, those flying saucer thinking the moms,
- 3:06yes, sir, know what they really are? No, well,
- 3:09Martha, there the horseshoes from the Riders in the sky, really, sir,
- 3:17horseshoes, Marty. Do you know that American song riders in the sky
- 3:24harshoes? Very good, sir. Now did you see this memorandum from Berkeley?
- 3:34Yes, sir, I put it on your desk. Well take care
- 3:37of it. You tell Faster to put a couple of men on watch tonight.
- 3:39I don't think it will mount to anything. Yes, yes, inspector.
- 3:47It's mister Ross gave in about five minutes ago. I think you better
- 3:51speak to him, all right, sergeant, Yes, mister Ross, what
- 3:57can I do for you? There's nothing you can do from an our inspector.
- 4:01I killed a woman last night. I come to give myself up when
- 4:05you say that again, I killed a woman in my house last night.
- 4:10You'll find her there thirty one Cricklewood Lean. Why didn't you report it last
- 4:14night? I don't know. I've been walking most of the time trying to
- 4:18think. How did you kill at mister Ross? That choked? Why did
- 4:23you kill it? That'd been an argument? That's all. Her name is
- 4:28Selena, Selena Graham. All right, mister Rass, if you don't mind,
- 4:31will run out of your house. I don't want to go back there.
- 4:35I've done it. I've told the police. Now let's get it over
- 4:39with all in your time, after yourself. Martha and I took the haggard
- 4:53mister Russ to the house in crittle Woodland and Cha he sat throughout the entire
- 4:58trip, staring numbly through the window. I asked him no questions, and
- 5:01he puffered no further information. Criminal Records Office has an extensive file devoted to
- 5:09men and women who have killed, usually in passion, and subsequently given themselves
- 5:13out. But more than a simple confession is necessary. It was hard Jody
- 5:17to examine the scene of the crime and then proceed with a formal charge of
- 5:21men. Thirty one. Cricklewood Lane was a person's little house set apart some
- 5:33hundred and fifty feet from its nearest nail. I noted that the window sheds
- 5:39were drawn. Mister Russ reached into his pocket for his night key and locked
- 5:43the door, and we went inside. You're genetone, mister Russ. Yes,
- 5:51don't you think you'd better answer? Why should I? I? Well,
- 6:01well, mister Ross, she's through there. Stay here with him.
- 6:14Hm hmmm mm hmm. How did you say you killed her? Mister Ross?
- 6:25I told you that my head? And when what was this last night?
- 6:30I suppose it was about eight o'clock. I can't remember. Now.
- 6:32Can we go? I'm afraid not to? Would you step inside for you?
- 6:35No? I shall have to insist. I won't. I told her
- 6:39I killed her, and that's enough to come past me to look at her
- 6:41again. You won't have to, mister Ras. She's not there. She's
- 6:45not there, not there, sir, No, the girl has been here.
- 6:49I found a bruise on the handtown in the laboratory. She's dead.
- 6:53I know she's dead. You must believe me, assuming that you did kill
- 6:56her, mister Ross, how soon after. What did you leave the house?
- 6:59I don't know. I don't know what I did. What's the use
- 7:00of all this? And that's the question of a body, mister. I
- 7:03don't know what happened. All I know is that I killed her and I'll
- 7:06pay for it. I can't stand it here any longer. Take me away.
- 7:20It was rather an odd situation. I found it hard to disbelieve rand
- 7:25the Rossi's statement. Yet there were some as aspects to the case. It
- 7:30were, to say the least puzzling, aby being remanded into custody up in
- 7:33his own insistence and ours. Marfatt and I started from the hotel Empire,
- 7:38which mister rossid given as the residence of miss Selina Graham. You see,
- 7:45Marfatt, if the man is telling the truth, were incredible dicament that had
- 7:49occurred to me, sir the body maffe if there is one, Sir,
- 7:53you think it a delusion on his part for such before since I know transitioning
- 8:00too. But assuming that it's not an elusion, could someone have come in
- 8:05and taken the body after mister ross had run from the house, possibly to
- 8:09protect him rather a grizzly thought, he aren't you forgetting that the door was
- 8:15locked when we went in, and that mister Ross had the key. Quiet
- 8:18right, thank you, sir, which springs up another point. Would a
- 8:22man of Ross's obviously and central temperament kill then methodically obliterate all signs of possible
- 8:28struggle, extinguished the lights, locked the door, and then allegedly walk the
- 8:33streets all night in the funk before coming into contestaty A bit contradictory, sir.
- 8:39It he may have done all that, but where is the body?
- 8:43Yes? And he may not have done all that market, in which case
- 8:48we returned to you. Are there delusion? Yes, sir? Well here
- 8:54it is, sir, the empire a bit run. That is treason matting.
- 9:01Come along, Yes, sir, so I says I'll take five off
- 9:09on parsonal over Southampton. And you know what he says? He says,
- 9:11I want odds coo what cheap? I ring a right that person? Morning,
- 9:18gentlemen, With all with that now, I think you is miss Selena
- 9:22Graham staying here? That's shot? Would you see if she's in? Please?
- 9:26Poor art who try to say is Cory? She didn't speak them black
- 9:28scut and jam. Oh well you must know my brother in law. He's
- 9:33on the fourth police Constable Smithers. I don't believe I do know him.
- 9:37Do your mount it? No, sir, Well you will write lad you'll
- 9:41be commissioner one of these days, mark my words. I shall have to
- 9:45keep my eye on him. Then. Hmm, that's funny. No answer.
- 9:50When did you when I see her? Mister? The name is wel
- 9:52And it was the day before yesterday. I was off for himself yesterday.
- 9:56Oh wait a minute, wait a minute. The nightmare left a note of
- 10:00uh I remember, But where did that put it? Oh? Where it
- 10:03is? Well, you're too rate. She paid her bill and left last
- 10:07evening at six o'clock. Did she leave her new address? Mister Welker can't
- 10:11say that she did. They often forget and ring us later if she does.
- 10:15Do you want me to tell police? Comfortable Smith? Extremely good of
- 10:18you, mister Welk, but I'd rather you notified me. Oh, thank
- 10:22you very much. Well. Used to know one thing there is or was
- 10:31a miss Selina Graham. See what you can find out about it here.
- 10:35I'm going back to the yard. And he asked to see anyone consortable noseph
- 10:48guide as a morse. There was his brother in the missage. Doctor lewis
- 10:54here, but they wouldn't see them. All right'm Constable, thank you so
- 11:05gorette. Mister Ross, Yeah, you don't mind. Why did miss Graham
- 11:18leave her hotel last night? I don't know. When did you meet her?
- 11:24She came over at seven o'clock. Did you have any luggage with her?
- 11:28No? What did you argue about? What does it matter? Did
- 11:31it matters a great deal? Mister Ross. Let me alone. I've told
- 11:33you what you want to know. She's dead. I murdered her. Where
- 11:37was missus Graham employed? I'm not going to tell you. I'm not helping
- 11:39yourself, Sir, with this attitude, I don't want to. I want
- 11:43to be hanged and that's all. Now get out and let me alone.
- 11:52Constable. I think perhaps the ute better relieve mister Ross his tied delton shoemaces.
- 12:03Think you might try. I'm not sure, but we'll take no chances.
- 12:13I left the detention room and the brooding and ningbo of mister Ross and
- 12:18returned to my office. There were three people waiting for me. Mister Michael
- 12:22Ross scour or, five years older than his brother, but bearing a mark
- 12:26resemblance miss Mara Hayes, whom I learned was the suspects fiance and a man
- 12:31from Harley Street for whom I held a great respect, the noted psychiatrist doctor
- 12:35James Lewis. He won't see me and said he won't speak to any of
- 12:41us. She couldn't have done it. I can't believe that he even you
- 12:43the girl. He's admitted to both facts, sir, and at this point
- 12:48I have no choice but to either prove or disprove his confession. Disprove,
- 12:52Inspector, are you entertaining the thought of fantasy? We have weighed that possibility,
- 12:56doctor, Do you mean that grandall imagined he killed someone? It's a
- 13:00possibility, then that must be it because there was no girl. I know
- 13:05you see where to be married in two weeks, Inspector. He's very much
- 13:11in love with me as I am with him. She's right, I'm his
- 13:15brother. I know he would have told me we were very close. Did
- 13:18anyone have you see him last night? I know I spoke to him on
- 13:22the telephone at one time. It must have been a little cart date.
- 13:26I rang him at home. We speak to each other every night. I
- 13:31wanted to go to him. He stounded upset, but he told me not
- 13:37to. That's when I called you, doctor Lewis. Yes, yes,
- 13:41And I told her inspector that Grandall was in a state of depression and had
- 13:45been for a few days. There was no need to worry. Michael,
- 13:50Michael, be a good chap and take Maya out for a cup of tea,
- 13:52will you? There are a few things I'd like to discuss with the
- 13:54inspector. Why why can't I stay my dead? The thing that I wish
- 13:58to say to the inspector her Randal, And if you remain I can't be
- 14:01able to say them? All right, I'm sorry, very well. Letter,
- 14:11Well, there was a girl, and I think there still is.
- 14:16Her name is Selena Graham. You're not of Constructor. You needn't araulge anything
- 14:22which has passed between you and your patient. No, no, I'm aware
- 14:24of that. What does he told you about her? Nothing down the fact
- 14:28that he killed her? Yeah, perhaps he did, but not physically.
- 14:33What do you mean by that? Well, I shall put it as simply
- 14:37as possible, Randall Russ since childhood has got insecure and rejected, and the
- 14:43lead the two people closest to him have only added to this. Feeling he's
- 14:48brother Michael because Randall scope to emulate him and failed. And then the Mara
- 14:52Hayes because she embodies the strength upon which he is so dependent. Then did
- 14:58Selena Graham full till his sol for independence for a time? Yes, yes,
- 15:03he found her inside the end. So I'm not being a trick when
- 15:05I tell you that from his description she's his lower class, because that's exactly
- 15:11what he wanted. He could be accepted by someone who was his social and
- 15:15intellectual inferior. I see. And does she take the place of his fiance,
- 15:20oh to the country. Once he'd found that he'd been accepted by her,
- 15:24he no longer desired her. And I knew that last week when he
- 15:28told me that he was going to break it off, and last night he
- 15:31did. Yes, Yes, I think he did terminate the relationship, and
- 15:35in so doing it was to him the end of a life. This was
- 15:41a critical curier, remember, but Lambo was gaining insight into a many of
- 15:46the things that I'm telling you you'll feel. Then after that, in the
- 15:50cutting of these ties, this fantasy, the actual murder was created. Yes,
- 15:54fantasy is strong enough to drive him here to confess to a crime he
- 15:58had never committed, knowing the tremendous conflict taking place in his mind. I
- 16:00would say yes, But if I could see him, Inspector, I think
- 16:04I could prove it to you well, doctor, and I shall take you
- 16:07to him, Inspector, Inspector Black. Oh, just a moment, doctor,
- 16:18Yes, doctor, a report just coming, sir, Well doctor,
- 16:26it seems that tannersy has given way to fact. The body of a woman
- 16:30was taken from the Thames early this morning. He's just being identified as Selena
- 16:34Graham pursue. We'll tend to cost your start as Inspector Peter Black Pursue and
- 16:52the man who confessed continues. In just a moment, the Rock and Tell
- 16:57Lady, the gal that helped inc Rosby land his first professional job, Mildred
- 17:02Bailey will beat her Bingle's special guest on the CBS Show this Wednesday night.
- 17:06Bing and Mildred Bailey will talk over all times and do some duets and solos,
- 17:11and also on hand you'll find that hot combination the Firehouse five plus two.
- 17:15Be sure you're listening this Wednesday when on most of these same CBS stations,
- 17:18The Bing Crosby Show brings you Mildred Bailey and bing in a nostalgic mood.
- 17:26Now the second act of pursuit, and the man who confessed the discovery
- 17:38of Selena Graham's body had at last taken the case from the nebulas and given
- 17:42it substance. I left the startle psychiatrists to wait for me in my office
- 17:47and made my way to the province of the Odds pathologist, doctor Bischel.
- 17:56Yes, Stephney, yes, Stephney. No, Deafney, definitely Deafney.
- 18:03Bye bye, love, I saved Black. How nice you're looking sick?
- 18:08Thank you? Not then? How do you are doing quite well? Thank
- 18:11you? I'm then have you had a chance to examine the body that was
- 18:15brought in this morning? I dare set which one I've been simply diluted with
- 18:21them? Taken from the Thames, A woman Selina Graham at Graham, Ah,
- 18:26yes, here we are. And no, I haven't had a chance
- 18:30yet. One of your cases, yes, oh splendid, I must get
- 18:36to it at once. I like your cases Black, so interesting? Ye
- 18:40shall we go? Well? Well, well, those knocks on the throat
- 18:52not very pronounced, but the strangulation I should say, will will no?
- 19:00This name be something risk watch yes, stopped at approximately nine o'clock, so
- 19:04it did you think that would establish time of day? Not necessarily. I'll
- 19:11take that if I may. You'll have the physical lab door over it.
- 19:15Oh, all right, take here we are anything else? I don't think
- 19:19so. Oh yes, you might send a copy of your report in when
- 19:22you're finished in Oh love to please give me, give yourself and knock at
- 19:27night, kindness. Did you see who was inspector? Not yet? Doctor
- 19:41Lewis, he'll be here in a moment. I saw the girl. She
- 19:44had been charged. The marks were there. All right, that's incredible.
- 19:48I know ross so well, at least I thought I did. Possibly there's
- 19:52a bit of murder in every one of us that even as the charactrists can't
- 19:56detect. That's true, and we often learn it too late. But look,
- 20:00he said he killed the girl in the house. What was she doing
- 20:03in the term? I don't know. And his personality negates violence. I
- 20:07can't understand it unless he's gone, well, unless he would give in to
- 20:11it some step that we know nothing about. However, from his statements concerning
- 20:18the girl, that hardly seems likely. She didn't sound the sort it would
- 20:21put up a fight at the party. Who here he is? I come
- 20:23in? Well? Thank you can't scro wait here? Please, you're very
- 20:29good, sir. Sit down, mister Rus. Have you anything to add
- 20:37to your confession? Mister Rus, no, I think you had. We
- 20:41found miss Graham's body. I want you to tell us how it got into
- 20:44the Thames. I don't come now. I don't know. I killed her
- 20:48in the house, then I ran out, that's all I inspector. Certainly,
- 20:55Rambrome, why did you quarrel with the girl? You know? And
- 21:00because you told her you didn't want to see her again? Yes, but
- 21:03she didn't want the relationship to end, that's right. What did you say,
- 21:07Rana? It must have been very important to you. You know you
- 21:11told me that you don't like physical violence. I do. I hate it.
- 21:17If she wouldn't let me go, what do you mean she said that
- 21:21she'd go to Mary her and tell her. Ah, So you choked her
- 21:26because she made you feel no longer independent? Yes, but I didn't mean
- 21:30to kill her. I wanted to frighten her to show her that I was
- 21:33the stronger. I didn't know it was so easy to kill somebody that way.
- 21:37And then she fell and I ran out brand. Did you run?
- 21:42I told you, I don't know if, as you say, you walked
- 21:45the streets all night. You must have stopped somewhere. Randall. Remember you
- 21:48told me that when you were upset, you'd take a drink to try to
- 21:52calm yourself. And yes, just perhaps I do. I think there may
- 21:56have been a problem. I can't remember, mister Rass. Where did you
- 22:04go? What was the name of that abbe? Yeah? There was not
- 22:11a house horn? How is that of birth? Right? I needed a
- 22:17drink? Everybody was looking at me. Yeah, your house? All right?
- 22:23Constable, you take mister ras back, Tominal. He didn't kill her,
- 22:33inspector choked her? Yes, but what if she regained consciousness then left
- 22:38the house, went to the river and threw herself in. But why not
- 22:41the dream of rags to riches become the nightmare she awakes to despair and suicide.
- 22:48Theoretically it sound after but according to the yard statistics not likely statistics.
- 22:55And what had that gotten? Miss Graham was wearing her coat and shoes.
- 22:59I have yet to a woman's suicide who didn't remove either one or both articles
- 23:03befo they act well, so oh luck here and so I gathern. The
- 23:18barman says, there's another pubby the next player, the Fox and Hounds.
- 23:22Of course, Marfy, yes, it might be a waste of time.
- 23:25It's entirely possible that mister Ross is an extremely clever young man who is playing
- 23:30a short game, and what is it listen to a murder which he swears
- 23:33was committed in his house in order to make the appearance of the body and
- 23:36the Thames as uside. Seems to me it's going to be a bit difficult
- 23:40to make him change his story unless someone saw him throwing the girl into the
- 23:44river, which is extremely doubtful. You know, sir. What puzzles me,
- 23:49is it if he did te it that way, why did he contest
- 23:53to the crime at all? Well, let's see if they can tell us
- 23:56anything at the Fox and Antemist. At the Box and Hounds, we learned
- 24:04Rangeluas had been there at half past day, remained there for some fifteen minutes,
- 24:11was remembered because of his extreme agitation. The conversed killer had taken no
- 24:15pains to cover his tracks. When we returned to the yard, doctor Bishop
- 24:26was waiting in my office with his report. I say that this is delightful.
- 24:32How do you manage to do it? You do want? Doctor?
- 24:36Shut up with these extraordinary cases of yours. It's miraculous. This girl was
- 24:40drowned. Drown Oh yes, Marge and Mucket drowned. So that's it,
- 24:45doctor Bishop. Is it possible that a state of unconsciousness could be mistaken by
- 24:49a layman for death? Yes rare, but yes, oh yes, I
- 24:55see that had puzzled me then it could be. Yes. Yes, the
- 25:00condition of cataleptic is one another, although quite rare, would be telepod sinus
- 25:07syndrome, ash in gray color, respiration very light, the pulse almost indistinguishable,
- 25:12heart beat so slight. Certainly the layman's stumbling upon such a sight would
- 25:18assume that death had taken place. Oh, yes, definitely the choking,
- 25:22the poor drowning could have brought about the state. I am indebted once again
- 25:26to doctor Bishop. Ah pleasure Black any time, any time at all.
- 25:33Do let me know how you fare most interesting? Is that spirit, sir?
- 25:41I hope so muttered well, doctor Lewis, this is Inspector Black.
- 25:48Yes, I wonder if you'd be good enough to call it my eyes splendid.
- 25:55Yes, it does concern him. Oh and I wish you'd get in
- 25:59touch with mister Michael Ross and miss Hayes. Yes, I'd like to see
- 26:03them too, Thanks very much. I've called you here to explain my reason
- 26:21for withdrawing the charge of murder which was leveled at mister Randall Ross. I
- 26:26knew he couldn't have done it. He didn't kill her. I have a
- 26:30rather tragic story to tell you, A tragic story, Inspector. Yes,
- 26:33doctor, we know that mister Ross did choke miss Graham. We also know
- 26:40that he ran from the house in a stake of the stream shop. In
- 26:44that shop, he did not extinguish the knights or even close the door behind
- 26:48him, let alone eradicate the signs of violence. But someone did, I
- 26:52mean she did recovered Lea nor a doctor. She was removed by someone who
- 26:57found her body and wanted to protect mister Russ, someone who was very close
- 27:02to him and knew that he was troubled that night. But I knew that.
- 27:07My rang me it will tell me that she'd spoken to him. I
- 27:11told you instead, I wanted to go to him. He wouldn't let me.
- 27:14Exactly. You see, mister Russ reacted rather normally to a normal occurrence.
- 27:18The phone rang and he answered it that miss Hayes was in your own
- 27:22words at a little pastic I didn't lie to you, asked doctor Lewis after
- 27:26the conversation. As I say, he ran from the house. We know
- 27:30that at eight thirty he was in the tavern. He remained there until quarter
- 27:33to nine. Selma Graham's watch stopped at ninth. That was when she was
- 27:40drowned in the tenis wrong? Do you mean to say that that is the
- 27:51tragedy. She was dead, she was he must have been. I rang
- 27:56Michael. We were both worried about him, and we got this. She
- 28:00was lying in the bedroom. She was dead, she was You and Michael
- 28:06took her from the house in Cricklewood Lane and thinking to protect mister Randall,
- 28:10ross through her body in the Thames, and at the time she was still
- 28:14alive. Don't keep saying that it's not possible. There was no pulse,
- 28:18no hearty, nothing, There was water in her lunge. We didn't know.
- 28:22We didn't know, We didn't. Had you left her where she wasn't
- 28:25called a doctor, she might have recovered, but you didn't. That is
- 28:30when the murder was committed. It's my duty to formally charge you with murder,
- 28:34to warn you that anything you might say will be taken down and given
- 28:38in evidence. So two people are there, independence for the sake of a
- 28:51man who had so long said for his own and now would never find it.
- 28:57Pursue and the pursuit is in. Pursuit is produced and directed by Elliott
- 29:15Lewis and written by Gildowd and Anthony Ellis. Music was composed and conducted by
