- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: So thanks to Volvo Cars Marin for sponsoring the show, which today has not the best audio.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: My audio was a little hot.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: It means like a little distorted.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: So we do what we could to fix it to improve it.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully the content is worthwhile.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: I think it is.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: This is a great game, so let's get to it.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: back from Seattle after calling the game, Niners Seehawks, and basically now, like 13 months, I've called four Niners Seehawks games.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: Well, three of them.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: One of them also on the sideline because Greg Popper called the last regular season game last year.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: But being a part of the broadcast for all four, they all have the same rock fight feeling where you know nothing's gonna be perfect.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: You know the game is going to be more about overcoming mistakes than being able to just overwhelm the team.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: Now, it's not what happened in the playoff game last year.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: Seattle overwhelmed the 49ers, but this game felt like those games, and yet was 32 to 29.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I saw somebody, I think maybe Bill Barnwell from the SPN said it was like the high-escoring defensive battle, you know, he's ever witnessed.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: 61 points 3229.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: It definitely felt that way.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: Like at one point I look up and I go the nine or scoring drives are 11 yards or 18 yards and 24 yards like what is going on in 11 yards and minus four yards because they recovered a fumble the end zone like what is going on.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: And it was, there's a lot to talk about, I mean, the game specifically, some big themes from it, the Niners now are tied to the top of the NFC with the weird Minnesota Vikings, and what has to be the most bizarre,
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: NFC standings after five months of the Shanahan era, like it's just it's it's weird.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's where I don't know if you look at the standings.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really look at the standings on October 12th.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: But go look at the standings.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's Minnesota and the 49ers of five and oh, the giants at the top of the NFC east at three one and one.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: The Panthers were good, but they're two and two they're top the south.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: three north teams, the packers, the lines and the bears at three and two, Seattle now out of the playoffs.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, again, we're not really having that conversation, but they're three and two, and then the Rams who who played tonight.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: at two and two.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: Then Atlanta, who might be good at two and three and Philly, who's almost good at two and three and Washington, who's like their one-way to Seattle.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's just, it is a bizarre NFC.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: And so this is why you go back to, I didn't know exactly what to think of the NFC.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly exactly, but I get what be this order.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: This is why I've been saying it at the beginning of the year.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: We say like, well, you sure this is a contender?
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, go look at the other teams.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: nobody's perfect and clearly especially in week five given that their run game isn't even close to what it was last year because they're down the guy that's supposed to replace Kenneth Walker, J. J. J. J. J. and Price, J. Drian came and say it.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: And Zack Sharpening was coming back and you figure they'll both be back by week 12 when you play again.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_00]: But the
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: I don't it's not solved, but it doesn't need to be solved.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: It is a breakthrough.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's a major breakthrough.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: You didn't score a of touchdown in the last eight quarters and you scored 32.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: Now, some of that was on defense, but it just felt like as as good as Kyle Shanahan is.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: and his good as Mike McDonald is and it turns out is human what he did at the end of the first half was stunning and it turned into a dessert it was very risky and I know you know he said that half way through last year I'm going to start pushing in a little bit more
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: But it was a major mistake, and it was a risk, and I understood him taking it, you know, buddy paid the price.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: So this game to me was just such a great reminder of something we've been talking about.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: And this is why I think one of the reasons why I think, you know, as Brock Perty evolves, it's not just about Kyle helping the quarterback.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's about having a quarterback that helps him.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: And this game was about Jimmy's and Joe's.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: and the coaches make a major difference, but Mike Evans, like Jackson Smith and Jigba, covered or not, can go off.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, you come into the game and even after the game, you say, who's the best receiver they had a foul?
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: You could have debate, but JSN is in that conversation truly untouchable.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like he's very different than Mike Evans.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: You can't touch him.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: But if you didn't know anything and just arrived, and this was your first NFL game, you would think that my Kevin's, you'd be like, is that kind of the best receiver?
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: In the NFL?
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: And I'd say, maybe.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: The atmosphere was everything you'd want from a rivalry game.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: There was a lot what's interesting about it in Seattle is there's a lot there was a really good of my view watching on TV.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: It certainly fell this way in person a good amount of red in the stadium, especially, uh, you know, between like the end zones, you know, along the field, to play the the length of the field behind the night or bench.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: And yet, when it was time to get loud,
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: you just heard Seattle fans.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: And when it was time to get quiet when Seattle was on offense, you didn't hear a thing.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's actually a little disorienting how quiet it is.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: And then there was no rhythm to the game.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: It felt like after the 49ers got an interception at the beginning of the second half or an auto-green second.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: Here they go.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_00]: and we were having a conversation with the commercial break and I say to Tim Ryan, like, I know this feels like the time to take a shot, but I think the 49ers should run the ball.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: There was things to feel great about, and things that tell you it's never, it's just not gonna be easy anytime soon with the Seahawks.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: And just like I think if you're Seattle, it's not gonna be easy anytime soon with the 49ers.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: But to be 5-0 and 3-0 in your division, five weeks into the season, with away from home wins against the Rams and Seattle.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: Given everything, right, given that the others have missed more games to injury than any team of the league, they have more games, more guys on the higher than any team of the league.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: And now it sounds like maybe Bose is going to come back against Washington on Monday.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: Here's the other thing I came out of that stating thinking, it really sucks that Deja and Striblings hurt.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's great news that he's not out for the year.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: I really hope he's back by week 12.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think Deja and Striblings is built to beat the Seahawks.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying you're guaranteed to beat them when you have him.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: I am saying, having him,
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: it's specific to playing this team.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: Cause you can see with my govins, you first of all you see how fast their defense is.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my God, right?
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: Every spot where Brock used to pick and some of these other games to run, then I really there, ground close as quickly.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: Even some of the run game, the stretch run from K-lon black, he got tackled in the back for the three-year loss on a play, you never get a three-year loss on.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's the first thing, but I think my govins is such a great example of
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: It can be unguardedable even if you're well guarded.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: I, you know, those Seattle DBs got cooked by my evidence and also had pretty good coverage.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't know what they're going to.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not DB guy.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't DB you, but my guess is in those defense of the DBs, they're going to go in their meeting room.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to watch a film and be like, what else am I supposed to do, where else am I supposed to be?
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: Mike Evans was covered on a lot of his big catches as well as he could be covered, and there's nothing anybody can do about it.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's a superstar.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: He's a superstar.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's a superstar.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so there were things that, you know, wild plays, mistakes, weird decisions, weird calls and ejection.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_00]: A controversial spot, actually there were several bad controversial spots.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: I won't say, I don't know, but the last one I thought when they reviewed the Cooper Cup was going to be a first now because it just feels like that always ends up.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: But I, there were a few things you come out of the game like next time around.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers lack of commitment to the run game.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: really was surprising.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't until the end of the third quarter of the beginning of the fourth quarter, the drive they end up tying the game on where Mike Evans has four catches plus the two point with the 49ers feel like finally committed to some consistency in the run game.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: Come out of that game thinking, I think Klan Black does need a few more carries.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: But as a team, they just didn't run at that much anyway.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Christian had 11 carries, Klan Black had six.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: Debo had two.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: by Caleb Black, the box, this is a, I don't even don't even tell me about the box score.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: Except for two guys, Mike Evans and Jackson Smith and Jig, but an even JSN's box score doesn't really tell the story.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think Perti's does.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: And Caleb, I don't think it's six carries or six and yards 2.7 a carry, but he just had some pop.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: This is as long as Kerry was 11, but I think it was 14.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_00]: It must have been 11.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: but it just has some pop in us like so like it just feels like Mike Evans makes such a difference in this series.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: Brock Perti, I told you guys this week, rewatching the playoff game in the week, a team game that Brock Perti, I think this many times, so I know I repeated myself, but it was just it was so obvious and such a good reminder, rewatching those games how poised and in control he actually was.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: in the face of some holacious pressure and he did it again.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_00]: He did it again and I'm going to do a video a separate video looking at some of the wow plays that Brock Perti made from within the pocket.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: I mean it was watching the film back on the flight home.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: Tim Ryan gets the old 22 delivered to him immediately and because he's a great team and he turns the iPad towards me like watch this, watch this, watch this and I'm just I'm writing down on the play numbers.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: that I want to go back and make a cut-up off because it was just nineteen to twenty nine one eighty nine two touchdowns a pick in twenty-year so-and-all check the box can be like guess Brock was okay that day he was special he was really he displayed special now if you're a sea ox fan
- 12:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think you come out of it like we still kind of know their place on defense.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: It felt like Seattle still had and this is why it is it's great for them, but it's also a breakthrough for the 49ers.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: The last two meetings it felt like, yes, he had to know what's coming and nothing can do about it.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: This time, and I'm sure Kyle broke some tendencies.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: He had all offseason to prepare for it.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: And he had some great time to up, I mean, but there were some plays where like, you'll see, I don't know what's coming.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: They tried to have try to run a screen to Debo, maybe I'll put it in the cut-up.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: Democracy Lawrence just runs.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: Debo was running like, parallel out of the line of scrimmage out to the right.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: And Democracy Lawrence just makes a B-line form.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: the tight end screen to kiddo like play after play after play just like do these guys know the plays and yet you want and that's why I say it's just you can know the play but it's the Jimmy's and the Joe's and even with the injuries unlike last year late the 49ers do not look like.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: Seattle has more talent than them.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think that's what it felt like late in the year last year was like, oh my god, Seattle's got too much.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: And apart, like Fred Warner's back and you know, a lot of guys were hurt.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: So that's obviously a big part of it.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I think being able to block, right?
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: Especially, this is why I thought they'd run it more like, I don't Connor Colby gave up some pressures, but everybody gets beat by these guys in the run game he was a monster.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I just think, I would guess the 49ers come out of that.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: Watch the film and go, God, we could have run the ball more.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I think makes you feel pretty good about it is not feeling like their physicality overwhelmed your physicality because the 49ers defensive line was unbelievable.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: Unbelievable.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: Five sex, all by defensive linemen.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: The first three were all by guys getting the first career sack.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we're unbelievable up front.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Raheem, like, I came out of the game but oh my God, is Raheem gonna get another job?
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: Coaching defense like this.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: So, let's get to some of the specifics of this game.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: But I would say it's so just weird things happen in the NFL.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's easy to look at the schedule and go, oh, nine and oh, eight and oh, right?
- 15:09[SPEAKER_00]: We'll get to Washington later, but this, this one felt more significant than the fact that it's five and all because it just felt like, they may get you next time, they could have won this one, whoever was going to lose this game, it was going to feel awful and whoever won the game was just going to be like, ah, I think it's a cigarette, but
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think the 49ers doubt of themselves, but they certainly prove for themselves.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like, no, we got enough.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: We can do this.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's not supposed to be easy.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_00]: This is the NFC you're trying to win here.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: This is trying to go to a Super Bowl.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to be easy.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: You may have to beat him again.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you're going to play him again, but I'm saying you may have to beat him again, like even if you lose that one in the playoffs.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: But I thought that I handled the noise really well.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_00]: They committed more penalties than they normally do.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe part of that's playing Seattle.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: But it wasn't false starts.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: They actually, the officials missed.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'll say some things for everybody.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, I'm not like bang on the officials guy.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_00]: I have a lot of respect for him.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: I've been to the officials clinics.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: I've been to their seminars.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: I've spent four days with officials at their seminar.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_00]: These guys are like, it's, you know, a bad pilot.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's not good enough to say, well, he's really trying.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not saying that.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: But they're not looking like they, they want to get it right.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: They work really hard at getting it right.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: And it is really hard.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder if there weren't the issues they had last week with a couple of suspensions that's, does, does, does, does, does Drey Greenlaw get ejected, but anyway, the 49ers got two awful spots runs where one was McAfrey, one was Kaylon Black.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think both times, I said a lie there at the first down.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: Then it was spotted like yard back.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: Watch the film, I was right.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_00]: The Cooper Cup played the, and I thought that was gonna be a first down.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_00]: But once I'm also okay, like I'm not losing my mind over it, I got on the internet a little bit today, been on big internet guy.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: And the discussion on both sides is idiot.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like the idea that it's obvious, I either direction is idiotic.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: That I mean, I saw one of the guys Brett Coleman, who, big YouTube guy, does NFL, network stuff.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: He got all 13 camera angles at a Cooper Cup play and line them all up.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, I still can't tell if he had the first down or not.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: So go with it.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_00]: They also miss some calls too.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like, this is not just the officials screwed that I'm not saying that at all.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm, if you're new here, I am not into that.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: At all, the kind of coal we got away with the fall start.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: There was one play and I was like, I saw it happen in real time.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh my god, Luke Fale does that little banana motion that dash that use chicken only does.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: And like halfway through realizes he's kind of going the wrong direction because he's running towards the line of scrimmage before the snap and nobody did not get flagged.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_00]: So it was both ways not great.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: I thought the PI that they called in the end zone on the first two-point conversion and then Mike Evans converts the next one.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, technically it's probably, I mean, the guy got there like a half a second early, kind of turned Mike Evans, generous call.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_00]: To me, it was super star call.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: Mike Evans gets that call.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_00]: You drink Jacob Coward doesn't get that call, which we had to talk about that too.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: They got all the, like the Niners special teams, it's like a rollercoer, like some weeks, it's like, this is so good in the other weeks.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: It is not.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: And that Jacob Coward, I'm off to Ponton, you could feel it coming, because he's looking into the sun, and shading his eyes.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: And my thought at that point was like, don't bother you.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't at the eight yard line.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: I know you want to make it explosive and return this thing to the 12th.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: You get like the 30 just, not now.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: Let it go.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: But look, all right, let's talk about a few specifics.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_00]: There aren't 32 people on the face of the earth that can play quarterback at an acceptable level.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: Kyle Shanahan said that several years ago before drafting train lands, and I think about that quote all the time, it's so true.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_00]: There are 32 certain quarterbacks in the NFL.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: There's like 20, probably, where you're trying to figure out, maybe this is our franchise guy.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe not.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_00]: But then there's of those 20, there's like seven of them that you know are getting
- 19:59[SPEAKER_00]: And in your one, your two, your three of the guy, you never exactly sure which one he is.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: What you want, if you're a good team, is not that your guy can slice and dice the dolphins, but that's nice.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: What you want is that your guy can handle the pressure of the biggest games.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: You know, there are 32, there are a hundred guys
- 20:28[SPEAKER_00]: but the number of guys that can take the beating, the mental and physical beating that is required to hang in and win games against championship level teams, the numbers really small.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_00]: And watching the Seattle Seahawks defense get introduced, the starting line up to the beginning of the game, a Luminfield.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: I thought I could see how even a very seasoned pro,
- 20:54[SPEAKER_00]: would be a little scared, watching to Marcus Lawrence and Leonard Williams and Jared Reed and Byron Murphy and Nicky Manwari, but especially those front four run out for introductions, you just thought, holy hell, look at the size of these guys.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: I've always been Leonard Williams and to Marcus Lawrence specifically over the years seeing them in person, watching them run around on the field pregame without their pads on.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_00]: is been an eye-opening experience right on a on a in a sport of one percenters these guys are one percenters of the one percenters just physically it's crazy the size the ferocity the speed the aggressiveness the physicality like all that stuff and I said to somebody on my cadet you know to mark uh letter Williams I don't know if
- 21:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and he's way more physical than DeForce Buckner.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just it's one thing to go in like too young and dumb to understand how hard it is.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_00]: But then you've done it a few times his broadcasts and you've been hit and hit and hit and hit.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_00]: And he still has extraordinary confidence.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_00]: Keeps his head about him for the most part.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: I thought Brock's intentional grounding was warranted.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like a lot of people disagree with me on that.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_00]: Most people, I think, said it was a receiver in the area.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_00]: I wish they officiated intentional grounding the way they officiated that Brock intentional grounding, which is in the spirit of the rule.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: You're not thrown into that guy.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_00]: Now, they don't officiate it that way.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_00]: And a bunch of other situations too, so I understand it.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_00]: But that was the only time where I thought, like, oh, kind of short circuitist.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_00]: He was so calm, and so accurate.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, you can, like I said, I'm going to pick out a bunch of plays and do a different video on it.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_00]: but there is no question that the 49ers have a quarterback physically capable and more importantly mentally capable of handling these situations.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's just that question's been answered.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_00]: His mental capability, which means intestinal fortitude, toughness,
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: and really what's required in the game like this, the ability to bounce back from mistakes.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think I said it on the pre-game show, not that you heard it, I'm just remember, I'm trying to remember, like you're not going through the whole year without giving up a sack.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: So, better sooner than later, I guess, at this point, it's gonna happen against Seattle and so what?
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna get there guy too and you might throw a pick.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: You might fumble, you might made a bad decision.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_00]: That game was such, it was the perfect example of like, this is what big time playoff games can feel like.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_00]: We're no one gets to have momentum.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_00]: We're nobody gets to have a rhythm.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_00]: We're nobody gets to string three drives together and spend the rest the second half just celebrating.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_00]: The game that Seattle played against the 49ers and the playoff last year for any playoff game, for any team, that is not normal.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_00]: You don't normally just get to run away.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_00]: Right, you normally have to grind it out.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I think you get a lot of like spread offense, never turn my back to the quarterback, elite 11, QB camp, everything's always going my way.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_00]: If it's not good enough, I'll transfer guys, which is understandable.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: I don't begrudge a guy like they're gonna pay me seven million over there, I'm out fine.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_00]: That's not the point I'm making.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_00]: But it's just not the way the highest level games are played.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not the way life goes, right?
- 24:45[SPEAKER_00]: This sounds like I'm making a transferring point.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just saying being perfect is so overrated, responding to the mistakes that will occur is what's rated, the whole nasty thing I love quoting, prepare for every eventuality, not every possibility, eventually something will go wrong.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_00]: and Brock Pertis ready for that.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_00]: And he can help you fix it.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: That's the important part.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's the part that I think, I'm not interested, like I don't try to do the thing where we separate Brock from Kyle, because some people wanted to defend Brock and be like, well no, or he's a system quarterback.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: And people like, no, no, no, no.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, no, it's playing for Kyle, that's great.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like every quarterback should wanna play for a Kyle guy, for McVay, for Kyle, for O'Connell, or some version of those guys, right?
- 25:40[SPEAKER_00]: But, can you elevate that guy?
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: Cause Kyle Shannon doesn't get to step on the field and make the plays.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: So the play breaks down, the play doesn't work.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_00]: Seven step drop, you turn around, oh my god.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_00]: That dude's six, five, three, 20s in my face.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_00]: What do I do now?
- 25:55[SPEAKER_00]: So, was it an MVP line score?
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: Nope, but, here's the good news.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: It was America's game in the week everybody saw it.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_00]: So no one was checking the box score on that game.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_00]: They just saw it and went, oh, okay.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was really good.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_00]: Plus Tomber, I haven't watched the TV copy yet, but it seems like Brady liked him.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: Tom Brady was there for, did they mention this on TV was there for, that was Brock's 50th start.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_00]: He was also there for Brock's first career start.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_00]: Mike Evans has 24 catches this year.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_00]: 22 of them have been for a first down or a touchdown.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_00]: Now, one of those was the toss to Debo, that counts to the touchdown.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_00]: The other two catches were a nine yard catch he had on first and 10 against Denver.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_00]: And then yesterday or Sunday, he had a 15 yard catch on first and 20.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers had not really put together a long drive.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_00]: They get the ball to start at the end of the third quarter.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_00]: And they're down what?
- 27:12[SPEAKER_00]: 26-21.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, 26-21.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: And then they get, and it, uh, a penalty.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_00]: They had first in 20 on their own 16, I think that was a was at the Brandon Cook's penalty, which was a bad call on George Kittle was behind the last skirmish when he caught that ball.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_00]: So Brandon Cook should not have been penalized for blocking downfield.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: But it's first in 20, late in the third quarter, your own 16, down 2621, boom, Mike
- 27:54[SPEAKER_00]: been on a 3rd and 10, 3rd and 10 midfield, like I remember it, it's 4th quarter, like this is it, like if you don't get this and they get the ball and score again, which is not how the game was happening by the way, you were turning over you were getting stops, but it just was crunch time.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_00]: And there's Mike Evans for 23 yards, and then after the Brock intentional grounding, you're like, oh my god.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_00]: Second in 21, Mike Evans for 28 yards.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, I can't believe Mike Evans is on the 40 dinners.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I can't believe he's on the 40 dinners.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe this Mike Evans is on the 49ers.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_00]: I thought you're getting like the, you know, end of the career guy and goes to another team for a year, Mike Evans.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_00]: Now it's like, it's gonna help any more years on his contract, pretty good contract.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_00]: He has completely changed their team.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: and not just because he's a great player, not just because he's a one-on-one mismatch because you can't match him or a two-on-one mismatch sometimes, but because he's physical and because he's tough and because he's playing through broken ribs.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_00]: Every game it happens he'll make a catch You're 17 yards on the first catch the game for my Kevin's and Mike goes to the sideline gingerly and goes down to a knee and then Mike's back three snaps later What a gift to have him in that locker room?
- 29:15[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully for maybe now a couple of years, but even this year for Dave John struggling to see what it looks like and Dave John's a tough.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Dave John son of a marine like but What a gift for everybody when you see a player walking to a locker room this veteran
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: this experienced with this many like high-level leaders and a dude walks in like, oh, that's a leader too.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_00]: But he is a, he's not just a star, he's not just a great player, he's a superstar who Brock pretty really trusts because he throws him the ball, because sometimes he like pre-determments I'm going to Mike here and throws in and goes out of balance and's incomplete, but you know what?
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: On the balance, throw it to Mike more than throw it to Mike less and it's gonna be a great thing.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_00]: I was watching him again every week.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, I can't believe they got this guy.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_00]: And if I were a bucks fan, I'd be miserable about it.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, I don't think there's anything the bucks could have done to keep him.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing I thought watching it was, as great a career as he had in Tampa, he would have had even a better career plan for Kyle Shanahan for 10 years.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think you could say that he shouldn't have been, but I don't think it's really defensible.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like, once you do what he did, you might get ejected from the game.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_00]: 15 years ago, maybe more, before replay assist for sure, which is just the last few years.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_00]: you would, you probably wouldn't get ejected, and I don't even get caught what happened maybe you guys bleeding like what happened.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_00]: He got baited.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: It was funny because Kyle Shannon didn't interview with Matt Mayoco this week talking about him and he was like, uh, you know, he goes up to the line, but he doesn't cross it.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like, whoops.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_00]: You could debate, it was clearly, if the reverse had happened to Brock Perti, you don't want the flag on the sideline play.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_00]: His foot was landing out of bounds as Greenlaw hit him.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_00]: If it wasn't Ray Greenlaw, maybe you'd give the defender a little bit more of the benefit of the doubt, but, you know, I think it's really hard to be defender in these spots, because you don't know, is that guy going to fake me and go for the first down or is he going to step out of bounds?
- 31:32[SPEAKER_00]: So that was bad.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_00]: Then he ends up in the bench and they can't get him out of there.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_00]: Then he did kind of something that he would probably do to somebody else if they were on their bench after a bad hit like that Without a helmet on kind of bait him and he got baited in a big game He got baited and at the end of the day we could say Ah, you don't really need to get a check-in for that.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you got baited, but he got baited and He didn't play for two and a half quarters of 49 or C Hawks.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_00]: Can't have that Can't have that
- 32:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'll tell you something else about this game, about the season right now.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think Debo's open a lot.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't looked, you know what?
- 32:18[SPEAKER_00]: I should pull up the snap counts.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see here.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers are running offense.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_00]: Brock Perti, Kyle Shannon.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_00]: These guys are running offense with two receivers that basically never see the ball.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_00]: I know Jacob Cowling had one catch.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_00]: And it was a little bit of a, it was a bobble at that.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_00]: It didn't feel great about it.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_00]: Um, what do you play?
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: Half the snaps on offense, 26 snaps, walk into play 22 snaps.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_00]: That's 48 snaps.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_00]: A brand of cooks is quickly approaching them because he played 24 snaps.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_00]: But.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know, 48 snaps and one target.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's two targets, one catch between those two guys.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that's a lot of snaps for guys who just are not getting the football.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like, not even looking at them.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's hard to say, oh, when you get these guys back, and then it'll be a complete team because people are getting hurt, but that's just the nature of it.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_00]: But God, a Debo,
- 33:25[SPEAKER_00]: Stribbling to Marcus Robinson, you know, Mike Evans, receiving group, if that's what they've got at the end of the year, it's exponentially better than what they've got now.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, if you, if you use last year in Buffalo as an example where Brandon Cook's had, you know, a couple of light production games is first few games after we went to the bills late in the year and then just rock it it up.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_00]: You know, clearly, Brock threw it to him twice on the same, same touch down.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_00]: He got one was a timeout, I do think he just got to expect that he's going to come along.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_00]: uh... it's malpractice that we've got this long and i really talked about reemores in his defense uh... renaro green the interceptions uh... the due man but i don't agree and always doing something uh... he i heard him on i was driving home late after we landed in sanosa and uh... go to sanaclera grab a car when we pull into the stadium Bruno Mars concert is going on in the Levi stadium
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: Thankfully, you had probably another hour or two to go so I'm getting out of there from a traffic standpoint wasn't bad But Bruno Mars is playing so I hop in the car, serious XM and I hear it interview with Fernando Green He's the his interviews are great because he just tells you what he's thinking.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, yeah, I saw that
- 34:51[SPEAKER_00]: Sam Donalds just predetermines and I just knew what he was doing so I just ran into the spot and took the ball and it really would both Is interceptions were gorgeous like he looked like a receiver it made me think could we're not a green return punts The days of the the DB who's also the primary turn of those feel like those days are long gone like what how many Maybe maybe somebody When you want to hear someone's not an out of fan maybe your fantasy somebody know is there a DB out there returning punts now
- 35:19[SPEAKER_00]: Those guys used to do it all the time.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_00]: They're doing it anymore.
- 35:22[SPEAKER_00]: But Ronaldo's ball skills were just so good.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_00]: But I never could have thought that this defense would look this good.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_00]: Up front, like the line would look this good without Nick Bosa.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_00]: They were actually disruptive.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_00]: They had six X coming in the game.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_00]: They had five in this game.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: And it's one of the reasons, again, like in the grand scheme, the Niners and the Seahawks, the rivalry back and forth, got if you got Rahim, you get something special.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_00]: And...
- 35:52[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they don't really have anything special on offense other than JSN, which is he can single handily be almost did beat you and their run game should get better.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_00]: They can't really run to the edges with the two running backs.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_00]: They got they can't stretch it.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_00]: And Donald rocks better than right.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_00]: So they just.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_00]: And if you can keep special teams even, and not make any mistakes on special teams, they're gonna turn it over.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like, Donald specifically is gonna make mistakes.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_00]: He threw one ball that was not intercepted to Rashid Shahid in triple coverage at the goal line, double coverage at the goal line.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, what is that throw?
- 36:34[SPEAKER_00]: Rashid Shahid is dangerous, but you'd rather they had, I mean, you're happy they have him instead of Kenneth Walker.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see, maybe by the time they get the running, but Charbon A comes back and it changes the game for them.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_00]: But as good as they're dealing, we come in and talk about their D-line, and their D-line was excellent.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_00]: And they create a lot of problems and blockhead to make a lot of plays on the move.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_00]: But the Niners D-Line match some step for step, maybe outperform to them.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it just was, it is, I would say I'm more stunned by that than anything that's happened this year for the 49ers that they looked that good in that game of front.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I know, you know, we've talked about, you know, the Yards per carry and it's not that it's good, but it's really, because that's in the second half when teams can't run as much anymore and they have been,
- 37:26[SPEAKER_00]: extraordinary without Bosa and you know I think going back to what I said to start this episode the show about the Jimmy's and the Joe's in these types of games.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's special players that stand out.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's Mike Evans that just stands out.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: Because, because nothing looks easy.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_00]: Everything's hard.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_00]: And then you see something look easy to somebody.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_00]: You see something look easy to JSN.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: You know, oh my god.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_00]: You watch Brock move in the pocket under pressure.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, whoa, that's, it looks like in games like this.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_00]: Grace and Holden.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_00]: They might have something.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_00]: No, they've got something here, they've got something here.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_00]: And he, you know, I think he was a pick when they made it that felt like value and you watched me go just quick, like he just got something, he flashes.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_00]: And then in this first preseason game, he flashes.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_00]: It was first practice, I remember he flashed and he thought, well, he's got fresh legs because he'd been hurt, he'd been out a while.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, something that can happen in training camp.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_00]: But then in games, he said, plan and he would flash.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think he's not big.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_00]: So the only question with Grace and Altan is going to be, can he hold up?
- 38:39[SPEAKER_00]: We interviewed him on the post game show after the game.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_00]: And he was talking about why he plays the way he plays with so much joy, why he's having so much fun.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_00]: And he said he had no other brothers, two years older than him, who their dream was to play football together growing up and his brother died tragically and and so that's his why like he just plays for both of them now and I don't know that I would have guessed like all that guy's got something special reason that he plays the way he plays, but once you hear that you're like, oh,
- 39:16[SPEAKER_00]: That makes sense.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_00]: That makes sense.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_00]: What was interesting too, the first question was of course grace and you forced to fumble, you recover the fumble and it was for a touchdown.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know what to call that.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if it's the right name of the wrong name.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_00]: In the moment, I called it the golden sombrero, which I know is a negative thing in baseball when you strike out three times in a game.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_00]: But it just felt like the thing to say in the moment on the broadcast.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought he was going to, like, pound his chest about scoring a touchdown.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_00]: He was like, you know, I think my teammates, Ramello pushed a guy out of the way.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_00]: He's, I don't even know what happened.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_00]: I just kind of rolled over after the fumble and I had the ball and I was laying in the end zone and I scored a touchdown.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_00]: So he's just,
- 39:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like he just fits in both in play style, great personality, and you know, has it become a player that that's really special for them.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't watched the defense of filming it, but it feels like maybe a remote height took it to another level this week.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_00]: So that would be a, that'd be a big deal for the 49ers.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_00]: But what they're doing on defense is just, it is, like I said, the fact they're 5 and 0.
- 40:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's surprising, you never say anyone's going to be 5-0.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_00]: Once they won the game, and LA, you went 4-in-1.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like that's in the bag, then you got to go to Seattle.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: And you'd feel fine at 4-in-1.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_00]: They say 4-in-1's in the bag, 4-in-0's in the bag, and then you go to Seattle.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_00]: But you could see the path.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_00]: I could not see the path to this team being a disruptive defensive line without Nick Bosa.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_00]: And here's the thing.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think Nick wants to play.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_00]: Nick wants to be out there, Nick loves to play football.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's a big year for Nick Bosa, you know, contract situation.
