- 4:26Speaker 10: The fifth season in Seattle, cracking history is finally in
- 4:29Speaker 10: the rearview mirror, and it's time to dive into as
- 4:31Speaker 10: far as what happened, how it happened, why it happened,
- 4:34Speaker 10: and what we're looking here to the future. That conversation
- 4:38Speaker 10: will come later. I welcome back in our crew, Everett
- 4:43Speaker 10: now from the booth, joining us for one last time
- 4:45Speaker 10: before we break here for the summer. Fellas, have we
- 4:48Speaker 10: had a little bit more sleep under us now these days?
- 4:51Speaker 1: I have a three almost four year old, so no,
- 4:54Speaker 1: I've gotten less sleep.
- 4:56Speaker 5: I teed it up for you right there.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I've gotten less sleep in the last week than
- 5:01Speaker 1: I probably have gotten in the last month and a half.
- 5:04Speaker 1: But hey, I love every second of it. So I'm
- 5:07Speaker 1: definitely my plan to make up for lost time has begun.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Yeah, two and a half days of good sleep for
- 5:14Speaker 4: me and sunny Arizona got me, got my take filled
- 5:18Speaker 4: back up.
- 5:18Speaker 11: Both boys.
- 5:19Speaker 5: And you're looking at a little more bronze these days.
- 5:21Speaker 10: Al he's ready to go a little more bronze next game.
- 5:26Speaker 4: No, I lots of walks outside in seventy two degree
- 5:30Speaker 4: weather over the last few days.
- 5:32Speaker 11: But I'm back. I'm back in Seattle and ready to
- 5:35Speaker 11: dig into this stuff.
- 5:36Speaker 10: Hockey life is a great thing, Dad, life is an
- 5:38Speaker 10: even greater thing as well, the travels that we take it.
- 5:41Speaker 10: It's all fe for lost time. I kind of fell
- 5:43Speaker 10: in the same category. I finally slept in my own
- 5:46Speaker 10: bed for the first time in roughly a week.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Not this last evening, but the.
- 5:49Speaker 10: Night before after we got right back in off the
- 5:52Speaker 10: plane end of season media availability clean out day, and
- 5:56Speaker 10: then right in the car to Yakama, Washington for a
- 6:00Speaker 10: kids baseball tournament. A lot of hotel logged in here
- 6:03Speaker 10: from this last week. So great to be back home
- 6:05Speaker 10: once again. Let's get to this year fellas as usual
- 6:09Speaker 10: our opening thoughts. I'll begin and I'll let you guys
- 6:11Speaker 10: here take it away as far as our reaction from
- 6:14Speaker 10: the season, how this all unfolded, first year under Lane Lambert,
- 6:18Speaker 10: and we'll get to more reaction from a Jason Botterill's
- 6:21Speaker 10: press conference again as we get toward the tail end
- 6:23Speaker 10: of the show and give our final goodbyes here for
- 6:26Speaker 10: the summer.
- 6:27Speaker 5: My opening thoughts begin with eighty two games in.
- 6:30Speaker 10: Hiring Lane Lambert, and I think this is the most
- 6:32Speaker 10: important hire they made for this season. It was the
- 6:35Speaker 10: most important maybe I think higher that they're going to
- 6:38Speaker 10: make for this team in the next two, maybe even
- 6:40Speaker 10: three years, because what we saw was a change in
- 6:43Speaker 10: attitude from the top, more of an edge, more of
- 6:47Speaker 10: a bite, more strength, and more pushback as well.
- 6:51Speaker 5: I think that we began to see a bit.
- 6:53Speaker 10: Of a change in the roster and how this was
- 6:56Speaker 10: all put up and set up under Lane Lambert. But
- 7:00Speaker 10: yet I think this season was one of disappointment with
- 7:03Speaker 10: how things ended after the Olympic break. And it's fair
- 7:05Speaker 10: to certainly say because disappointment leaves a change, plenty of
- 7:10Speaker 10: change potentially is going to be coming, and this team.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Right now needs it.
- 7:14Speaker 10: You would argue, maybe in the worst kind of way,
- 7:17Speaker 10: But Lane Lambert was the most important hire for me.
- 7:20Speaker 10: I thought out of this whole picture because how many times,
- 7:23Speaker 10: not just this year, how many times, not just last year,
- 7:27Speaker 10: how many times, maybe going back into the past, we
- 7:30Speaker 10: heard this locker room was maybe a bit on the
- 7:34Speaker 10: quiet side, or we as in hearing this from players,
- 7:39Speaker 10: came out flat. This is I think where the usher
- 7:43Speaker 10: a change is going to begin to take place because
- 7:47Speaker 10: before the Olympic break, with this roster largely unchanged, say
- 7:51Speaker 10: Mason marshmint in and out. By December, Ryan lin Gren
- 7:54Speaker 10: knew Bobby McMahon added back of the trade deadline, largely
- 7:58Speaker 10: an unchanged roster. Twenty seven to twenty and nine was
- 8:02Speaker 10: their record before the break. Goals against two point eight
- 8:06Speaker 10: team say, percentage fifth at nine to zero.
- 8:09Speaker 1: One.
- 8:09Speaker 10: Defensive structure helps out your goaltending, in this case, after
- 8:13Speaker 10: the Olympic break, last twenty six games seven seventeen and
- 8:17Speaker 10: two penalty kills seventy five percent major issue all season,
- 8:23Speaker 10: but the goals against up to three point six teams
- 8:26Speaker 10: say percentage fell from fifth down to twenty six in
- 8:31Speaker 10: the NHL, and I think here in this from Lane
- 8:34Speaker 10: Lambert last week where he mentioned several guys weren't in
- 8:38Speaker 10: this kind of a position before next year. Training camp
- 8:41Speaker 10: will be harder, next season will be harder. They want
- 8:45Speaker 10: to move more pucks toward the net. This is again
- 8:47Speaker 10: a direction of strength where they're trying to address. I
- 8:50Speaker 10: think for this next offseason and I question, maybe in
- 8:54Speaker 10: a very fair way, how much change will be coming.
- 8:58Speaker 10: I think a lot of it is needed, especially at
- 9:01Speaker 10: the top for their top six, for not just how
- 9:04Speaker 10: you produce offense, but the willingness of strength also to
- 9:08Speaker 10: produce that kind of offense. I said this one year ago.
- 9:12Speaker 10: Bully ball is coming back in the NHL. Look at
- 9:15Speaker 10: the Florida Panthers. They only miss because injuries bit them
- 9:19Speaker 10: hard this year, but they're going to be around. And
- 9:22Speaker 10: how many times did we say the tougher teams always
- 9:25Speaker 10: rise to the top. This is where I think change
- 9:28Speaker 10: is coming, not just physical but also mental.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Guys, take it away.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean listen, that was all you know, well,
- 9:40Speaker 1: said Mikey. And I feel like for me, there is
- 9:44Speaker 1: a thirty two thousand foot view that I'm going to
- 9:46Speaker 1: take here. I think that I'm going to start with
- 9:49Speaker 1: the positives. While it's annoying that this team did not
- 9:53Speaker 1: make the playoffs, and while it's very frustrating that there
- 9:55Speaker 1: was that collapse at the end of the year, ultimately
- 10:00Speaker 1: I think this team achieved that that bare minimum goal.
- 10:03Speaker 11: Right.
- 10:03Speaker 1: You wanted to be playing games that meant something in
- 10:07Speaker 1: March and in April in the last three years. You've
- 10:11Speaker 1: been in their last two years, I guess you've been
- 10:12Speaker 1: out of it by Christmas right. You know, year one,
- 10:16Speaker 1: year three, and year four, the Krakens spent a combined
- 10:20Speaker 1: twenty seven days in a playoff spot. This year you're
- 10:23Speaker 1: in one hundred and seventeen, one hundred and eighteen days
- 10:27Speaker 1: in a playoff spot. So I think when you look
- 10:29Speaker 1: at it from that perspective, you know you have to
- 10:33Speaker 1: call this season on the whole somewhat successful. Compared to
- 10:39Speaker 1: the last couple of years. We saw big strides made
- 10:41Speaker 1: for Manny Bediers, obviously, for the Grubauer got his groove back.
- 10:46Speaker 1: You know, Lane Lambert, you cannot overstate the importance and
- 10:51Speaker 1: what he brought to this culture, to this room, and
- 10:55Speaker 1: from a structural standpoint, so all of that I think
- 10:58Speaker 1: are seen largely as positive. However, my favorite saying, the
- 11:02Speaker 1: goalposts are allowed to move. And when you come back
- 11:06Speaker 1: from an All Star, from an Olympic break and you're
- 11:08Speaker 1: three points out of first place, you're you're planning, you're
- 11:11Speaker 1: designing your banner potentially right, You're you're you're getting ready
- 11:15Speaker 1: to book playoff travel, you're your your mind is already
- 11:20Speaker 1: toward all right, guys, let's just not let's not screw
- 11:23Speaker 1: it up. Let's not get too high let's not get
- 11:25Speaker 1: too low. Let's kind of stay on this plane or
- 11:27Speaker 1: we're gonna be good. Well, unfortunately got too low. And
- 11:31Speaker 1: I think for me, when you didn't have a ton
- 11:34Speaker 1: of injuries the second half of the year, when you
- 11:36Speaker 1: nothing changed, you got better your broad Vogue McMahon you
- 11:40Speaker 1: talked about, you know, addition by subtraction with with Mason
- 11:44Speaker 1: marshmoth leaving at least in my opinion, you got better.
- 11:48Speaker 12: Uh.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And I think it's kind of inexcusable to see what
- 11:52Speaker 1: we saw at the end of the year. Now you
- 11:55Speaker 1: look at the metrics, which we can get into a
- 11:56Speaker 1: lot later, but offense was still a problem. You have
- 11:59Speaker 1: to score on the NHL score page. You have to
- 12:02Speaker 1: scroll all the way to page five until you find
- 12:06Speaker 1: the first Seattle Kraken on the NHL points leaderboard, one
- 12:09Speaker 1: hundred and third place in the NHL Jordan everly with
- 12:11Speaker 1: fifty five points. You mentioned the kracking defensively, they were
- 12:14Speaker 1: peaking at five I think this year, and then they
- 12:17Speaker 1: ended the season in the twenties for goals against or
- 12:22Speaker 1: were they twenty I can't find it right here, but
- 12:25Speaker 1: they were in the twenties for goals against. And you
- 12:28Speaker 1: look at goals four this season, they peaked it, you know,
- 12:33Speaker 1: twenty eighth or twenty four, I think twenty twenty two,
- 12:37Speaker 1: but they ended up ending the season in the bottom
- 12:40Speaker 1: third of the bottom you know, quarter of the league.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Two point four goals per game after the Olympic break.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Yeah, So I think for me, largely overall, I would
- 12:49Speaker 1: say that there was some success this year. But I
- 12:52Speaker 1: do think if you really take a micro look at
- 12:55Speaker 1: this season, it wasn't good enough. And we've said that
- 12:58Speaker 1: time and time again the last couple of years, whether
- 13:01Speaker 1: on the whole or whether at points during the season,
- 13:04Speaker 1: it wasn't good enough. And I think next year, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 1: the krakend, you kind of paint yourself into a bit
- 13:11Speaker 1: of a quarter because you played competitive games, you played
- 13:15Speaker 1: meaningful games. But now after this late season collapse, you're
- 13:18Speaker 1: putting yourself into a position where your bottom barrel goal
- 13:23Speaker 1: needs to be a playoff berth. You don't really give
- 13:25Speaker 1: yourself a lot of wiggle room, I don't think coming
- 13:28Speaker 1: into year six. So it was frustrating how it ended.
- 13:32Speaker 1: But I think on the whole, there are gonna be
- 13:35Speaker 1: some positives that I'm going to take away from the
- 13:37Speaker 1: entirety of this season before you really start to get
- 13:41Speaker 1: the microscope out and really dissect this thing.
- 13:45Speaker 11: One comment four things I learned this year.
- 13:48Speaker 4: First, like the comment fits great point one hundred and
- 13:51Speaker 4: seventeen hundred eighteen days in a playoff spot this year.
- 13:54Speaker 11: I think the piece that.
- 13:55Speaker 4: You have to add to the middle of that is
- 13:57Speaker 4: one hundred and seventeen to one hundred and eighteen days
- 14:00Speaker 4: in a weak division in a playoff spot this year,
- 14:03Speaker 4: thank you.
- 14:04Speaker 11: Yeah. In fact, I mean.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Everybody believes the Pacific Division was very weak this year.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I wonder how that played into that number. Regardless, the
- 14:12Speaker 4: number is still the number. Four things I learned goaltending
- 14:17Speaker 4: Philip Grubauer with a huge rebound year this year. It
- 14:21Speaker 4: seemed like Joey Decord was on path to be this
- 14:23Speaker 4: team's number one goaltender for years to come, and this year,
- 14:28Speaker 4: out of you know, out of the blue, Philip Grubauer says,
- 14:30Speaker 4: holding my beer and you know, hold my stein, and
- 14:34Speaker 4: off he goes to end the season with better numbers
- 14:37Speaker 4: than Joey Decord. So I love that competition between the
- 14:40Speaker 4: two of them. But Philip Grubauer's rebound was definitely something
- 14:43Speaker 4: I learned this year. Secondly, Lane Lambert's system. It's hard,
- 14:48Speaker 4: but it's effective, and I think this team has to
- 14:52Speaker 4: decide if if they can play that way for a
- 14:54Speaker 4: two games plus playoffs to have success, or if they
- 14:58Speaker 4: can bring in personnel where may if you do take
- 15:01Speaker 4: a night off and I want to say you, I
- 15:02Speaker 4: mean one or two players, not twenty players from the
- 15:05Speaker 4: Lane Lambert system, you can still win hockey games because
- 15:08Speaker 4: you can score your way out of taking those nights off.
- 15:11Speaker 11: But I believe the system is effective.
- 15:13Speaker 4: I think the players think it's effective and I think
- 15:15Speaker 4: they stand behind it.
- 15:17Speaker 11: Third, killing penalties is hard.
- 15:20Speaker 4: This team ended thirty one out of thirty two for
- 15:23Speaker 4: the penalty kill this year, and you know, to get
- 15:26Speaker 4: to thirty you'd be at LA spot, which was about
- 15:29Speaker 4: two and a half percent better LA's in the playoffs.
- 15:32Speaker 4: So you know, Vancouver and Seattle thirty two and thirty
- 15:35Speaker 4: one at the bottom of the list. That's got to
- 15:37Speaker 4: get better. It had a big impact on the outcome
- 15:40Speaker 4: of games. And then the fourth thing was Bobby mcmaht man.
- 15:44Speaker 4: He's the real deal.
- 15:46Speaker 11: Ten goals, four.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Assists in the eighteen games he played with Seattle, and
- 15:50Speaker 4: you can look at his stats previously and had them
- 15:52Speaker 4: together and say, well, he was on pace for acts.
- 15:55Speaker 4: I just looked at the Seattle stats. Ten goals, four
- 15:57Speaker 4: assists in eighteen games. That puts them on a pace
- 16:00Speaker 4: for sixty four points, which would.
- 16:02Speaker 11: Have been ahead of Jordan Everly.
- 16:03Speaker 4: So playing in the Seattle system puts them on pace
- 16:07Speaker 4: for sixty four points. You gotta find a way to
- 16:09Speaker 4: keep this guy around.
- 16:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean again, folks, if you're asking us, why
- 16:12Speaker 5: are you talking about the audit?
- 16:13Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Trust me, trust me.
- 16:15Speaker 10: We're getting to this all in chronological order, and we're
- 16:17Speaker 10: gonna get to the audit, the reaction all of this
- 16:19Speaker 10: from Jason botterrel later on in this show.
- 16:22Speaker 5: But again, we're gonna be going in order as.
- 16:24Speaker 10: Far as how we're you know, feeding our thoughts from
- 16:28Speaker 10: reaction from this past season into prognostications and what's also
- 16:33Speaker 10: needed here for the future. Again, Mike Benton ever fits
- 16:36Speaker 10: you al Kiniski here on Cracking Weekly. I want to
- 16:40Speaker 10: go back, first off, not just to Matty Benier's but
- 16:43Speaker 10: also to Jordan Eberley, who cracked nearly sixty points, was
- 16:48Speaker 10: sniffing thirty goals on top of that Chandler Stevenson sniffing
- 16:51Speaker 10: fifty points once again, Jared McCann forty point guy, twenty
- 16:57Speaker 10: goal guy in just fifty two games. Copple Coco turned
- 17:00Speaker 10: it on after the Olympic break in was also a
- 17:04Speaker 10: sniffing career highs On top of that, how much did
- 17:08Speaker 10: this kind of drive our thoughts, guys from the end
- 17:11Speaker 10: of this last season. And I want to be careful
- 17:14Speaker 10: waiting into the what they need pooled that will be
- 17:17Speaker 10: later on here for this show. But the fact that
- 17:21Speaker 10: again you've been in this playoff mix over and over,
- 17:25Speaker 10: and I think a change in attitude and change in
- 17:27Speaker 10: leadership behind the bench helped out. But also for the
- 17:30Speaker 10: most part on this roster, you got several pieces already
- 17:34Speaker 10: in place where you fortify.
- 17:37Speaker 5: Him and move them a bit down the lineup. You're
- 17:39Speaker 5: doing yourself as a big favor.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think there's lots of pieces to
- 17:48Speaker 4: the puzzle that still need to come into play their Mikey,
- 17:51Speaker 4: two other notes I wrote down while while you were
- 17:53Speaker 4: mentioning that, and I think they aligned to what you're
- 17:55Speaker 4: saying is Berkeley Cotton. You know, Berkeley Catton made some
- 18:00Speaker 4: big strides forward this season, He's still got lots of
- 18:03Speaker 4: big strides to make, like lots of development over the
- 18:07Speaker 4: games he played this season. I know there was talk
- 18:09Speaker 4: early in this season about to would he go back
- 18:11Speaker 4: to junior or would he go to the World Juniors.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Where would he go? And I think that part of
- 18:17Speaker 4: that decision to keep him full time as a crack
- 18:19Speaker 4: and was a result of injuries early in the season.
- 18:21Speaker 11: But that is that wasn't necessarily the wrong decision.
- 18:24Speaker 4: I think he made a lot of positive strides, but
- 18:27Speaker 4: you can see in his game when he makes the
- 18:29Speaker 4: next three to five big strides forwards, he can start
- 18:32Speaker 4: having a regular contribution to these games. And then the
- 18:36Speaker 4: other the other piece of youth that I just want
- 18:41Speaker 4: to comment on as well, Jacob Monson. This team plays
- 18:44Speaker 4: better when he's in the lineup, And yes, I want
- 18:47Speaker 4: to see his game get better as well.
- 18:49Speaker 11: I know that.
- 18:50Speaker 4: You know, maybe Lane doesn't trust him completely. He trusts
- 18:53Speaker 4: his physical game. I know that, and he loves that
- 18:56Speaker 4: part of it. But he's going to trust every single
- 18:58Speaker 4: guy on the ice when they're out there. And so
- 19:00Speaker 4: if his defensive game gets better and he's able to
- 19:03Speaker 4: start contributing a little bit more to fourth line offensive responsibilities.
- 19:09Speaker 4: He could be a full time part of this team
- 19:11Speaker 4: just because of the effect he has on this team
- 19:13Speaker 4: when he's in the lineup.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I thought that everly, what he did
- 19:18Speaker 1: at age thirty five was amazing and coming back from
- 19:22Speaker 1: you know, forty games miss the injury that he had
- 19:24Speaker 1: last year, to lead the team and scoring. He was
- 19:29Speaker 1: led the team and goals, led the team in points,
- 19:31Speaker 1: and he was third on the team and assists, which
- 19:34Speaker 1: I mean, again for a thirty five year old coming back,
- 19:37Speaker 1: I think that was amazing. The strides that Matty Beniers took,
- 19:41Speaker 1: I mean it was a sophomore slump, it was first
- 19:44Speaker 1: semester junior year slump as well for him. And then
- 19:48Speaker 1: I think he really showed last half of last season
- 19:52Speaker 1: and definitely this season. The Matty Beneers and I think
- 19:55Speaker 1: that this team is going is going to be happy
- 19:58Speaker 1: with and appreciate for a long time time. Having said
- 20:02Speaker 1: all that, and again, I'm not trying to jump the
- 20:05Speaker 1: gun here, Mike, you so please forgive me or shut
- 20:07Speaker 1: me up if you need to. But the fact that
- 20:10Speaker 1: Jordan Eberley and I'm not saying that every isn't a
- 20:13Speaker 1: good player We all know he's a good player, But
- 20:16Speaker 1: the fact that Jordan Eberley led your team with twenty
- 20:19Speaker 1: six goals and fifty five points, that's not necessarily a
- 20:25Speaker 1: recipe for sustained success, right.
- 20:28Speaker 5: I love that phrase.
- 20:29Speaker 10: The stained success also they had it about three years ago.
- 20:32Speaker 10: But sustained success.
- 20:34Speaker 1: The fact that you've got three twenty goal scores, won
- 20:39Speaker 1: twenty six, two twenty goal scores, and ten double digit scores.
- 20:45Speaker 1: No one above thirteen outside of Ebbs, Beeneers, McCann and
- 20:52Speaker 1: Stevens said, right, you need to find more offense. It
- 20:56Speaker 1: just wasn't enough offense. And I'm gonna go back to
- 20:59Speaker 1: saying it. This year just wasn't enough. And that's the
- 21:03Speaker 1: frustrating part. Because Ley Lambert squeezed every drop out of
- 21:08Speaker 1: this lineup that he could. This team on most nights
- 21:14Speaker 1: were outworking their opponents, but at the end of the night,
- 21:18Speaker 1: they didn't have enough gas to find that third goal.
- 21:21Speaker 1: We said it multiple times. I found myself saying this
- 21:23Speaker 1: multiple times on the broadcast in the last month of
- 21:27Speaker 1: the season. Your top line is spending a minute and
- 21:31Speaker 1: a half killing in their zone, trying to get the
- 21:34Speaker 1: puck out of their zone and you felt bad because
- 21:37Speaker 1: at the end of it, you're back in the offensive end.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Maddy Benier's at the end of a shift. He's down
- 21:42Speaker 1: on one knee giving it all she's got for a
- 21:46Speaker 1: fifty mile hour slop shot right like, because he's just
- 21:49Speaker 1: so gassed. That is the part of the system that
- 21:53Speaker 1: I think is very, very tough, and al said it perfectly.
- 21:58Speaker 1: The system works right works, and when this team plays
- 22:02Speaker 1: that system, this is one of the best teams in
- 22:04Speaker 1: the league on a night league consistent basis. But you
- 22:07Speaker 1: gotta find some horses, and again we're gonna, we're gonna
- 22:11Speaker 1: get into it. This team just didn't have the top
- 22:15Speaker 1: level horses it takes to win you the race on
- 22:18Speaker 1: most nights. And it showed.
- 22:20Speaker 10: We're gonna hear from Jordan Eberlee Coppocaco and again a
- 22:22Speaker 10: snippet of Jason Bottererols press conference coming up in just
- 22:25Speaker 10: a bit here.
- 22:26Speaker 5: But going back here to the rookie component of this.
- 22:28Speaker 10: Now, you brought up Berkeley Catton, you brought up Jacob
- 22:31Speaker 10: Alanson as well. There's a player in the NHL who
- 22:35Speaker 10: is now ascended to superstar level status. And if you
- 22:39Speaker 10: look at the numbers in Year one, Berkeley Catton sixty
- 22:44Speaker 10: six games, seven goals, ten assists, seventeen points.
- 22:51Speaker 5: This player now in a superstar tier.
- 22:54Speaker 10: Year one sixty one games, seven goals, fourteen assists, twenty
- 23:00Speaker 10: one points. Next season thirty one points, fifty six games.
- 23:06Speaker 5: Year three fifty six points, forty nine games.
- 23:10Speaker 13: Banged up that.
- 23:11Speaker 10: Year, then the very following season, year four for him
- 23:17Speaker 10: ninety nine points in seventy eight games.
- 23:20Speaker 5: Folks, that name we speak of.
- 23:23Speaker 10: One of Berkeley Catton's idols growing up in Jack Hughes.
- 23:27Speaker 10: We're not saying Jack Hughes is going to be Bertley
- 23:29Speaker 10: Catton and so and you know, vice versa. But again,
- 23:33Speaker 10: it's comparable to the learning experience and the learning curve
- 23:36Speaker 10: that you've got to go through in the NHL. Here
- 23:38Speaker 10: for year one, where again I say you bring him
- 23:41Speaker 10: Jacob Alanson, let him make his mistakes, put plug him
- 23:45Speaker 10: in bigger ICEE time, maybe round his game mount he's
- 23:49Speaker 10: going to be a component here and he's going to
- 23:50Speaker 10: be a factor for this team. Oscar Fisker, Molgard Anton
- 23:54Speaker 10: Londel's one comparison. I think for him, you plug him
- 23:57Speaker 10: in certain spots. He turned a lot of ads with
- 24:00Speaker 10: his brains this season. His skill give him more ice
- 24:04Speaker 10: time under the conditions where he can get it. He's
- 24:06Speaker 10: going to be a big, big factor here for this
- 24:08Speaker 10: team as well.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Well. Yeah, I mean you're going to need time to
- 24:13Speaker 1: develop unless your last name is McDavid or Badard or Celebrini.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Very few players, I mean give me enough time. I
- 24:24Speaker 1: can probably count on one hand, maybe two hands, the
- 24:28Speaker 1: number of guys in the NHL right now that had
- 24:31Speaker 1: an immediate impact year one. We're talking fifty sixty plus
- 24:36Speaker 1: points in year one. I don't think that list is
- 24:39Speaker 1: very high, and then continued that success, you know, through
- 24:44Speaker 1: years two, three and so on and so forth. So
- 24:47Speaker 1: I think the strides that Berkeley Cat made this year
- 24:50Speaker 1: were amazing. I think the playing time that he got
- 24:53Speaker 1: was deserved. I like the spots they put him in,
- 24:57Speaker 1: you know, I do. I would not have been opposed
- 25:01Speaker 1: to see what he would have looked like on the
- 25:03Speaker 1: top line a little bit more often. But I also
- 25:06Speaker 1: understand that, hey, maybe you're just not ready for that assignment,
- 25:09Speaker 1: and that's okay, you're not maybe that that's not against you.
- 25:13Speaker 1: You're nineteen, right, I'm not gonna put you out there
- 25:16Speaker 1: against McDavid every night against Coppatar every night, and against Hughes,
- 25:21Speaker 1: against McKinnon. I'm not going to do that every night,
- 25:23Speaker 1: and and you know, kill the confidence. So I understand
- 25:27Speaker 1: the decisions and the coaching that Lane did. And for
- 25:30Speaker 1: a lot of people out there that will play the kids,
- 25:33Speaker 1: play the kids. Why are we playing these guys on
- 25:34Speaker 1: the third line? Why are we giving these guys bottom
- 25:37Speaker 1: six minutes? Well, I think you have to look a
- 25:39Speaker 1: look at this from a different angle. Can that player
- 25:43Speaker 1: handle that responsibility? Can that player consistently handle those top
- 25:49Speaker 1: line assignments? And I think that is something that when
- 25:52Speaker 1: you're looking at guys who have i think faced some
- 25:56Speaker 1: of the ire from the fan base on this roster,
- 26:00Speaker 1: to ask yourself, can they handle that responsibility? So I
- 26:02Speaker 1: think Berkeley Catton this year, for the time that he
- 26:05Speaker 1: got the positions that he was thrown in, I liked
- 26:07Speaker 1: him on the wing. I'm curious if they keep him
- 26:10Speaker 1: on the wing to take a little bit more of
- 26:12Speaker 1: the pressure off him and maybe develop that shot a
- 26:14Speaker 1: bit more. I had a zero problem with Berkeley Catt
- 26:18Speaker 1: and the game. Obviously, you want him to score a
- 26:19Speaker 1: few more points, you want him to get a couple
- 26:21Speaker 1: of more goals. But at the end of the day,
- 26:23Speaker 1: I was very happy and excited about what the future
- 26:30Speaker 1: holds for Berkeley Catt.
- 26:31Speaker 10: And also get here to this, there's a difference between
- 26:33Speaker 10: how you develop a player under a team that's tried
- 26:36Speaker 10: to make the playoffs and a player also who's trying
- 26:38Speaker 10: to develop on a team that has completely blown up
- 26:41Speaker 10: the entire blueprint.
- 26:43Speaker 5: Everything is beginning right back from square one.
- 26:45Speaker 10: Play him top line, minutes, play in, power play, penalty kill,
- 26:49Speaker 10: let him fall down, let him make mistakes, let him
- 26:52Speaker 10: learn from it. This season is all about development and
- 26:54Speaker 10: less about the wins and losses. That's where San Jose
- 26:57Speaker 10: was previously, That's where Anaheim was previous Lee Chicago as
- 27:01Speaker 10: well the Crack and.
- 27:02Speaker 5: We're playing in a different sandbox, so to speak. For
- 27:04Speaker 5: this season.
- 27:05Speaker 10: They wanted to make the playoffs, so the leash to
- 27:07Speaker 10: make mistakes unfortunately was short. But I think again, based
- 27:11Speaker 10: on those conditions, Berkeley, Catton and others did just fine.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that under the title of what needs
- 27:19Speaker 4: to happen next year, and I think that there's probably
- 27:21Speaker 4: a long list of things that you'd like to see happen.
- 27:24Speaker 4: But continuing not thought Berkeley Catton. I'd like to see
- 27:27Speaker 4: Berkeley Catton double his point output. So seventeen points this year,
- 27:31Speaker 4: let's see thirty five points next year. However that ends
- 27:33Speaker 4: up being maybe it's more, maybe it's a few less,
- 27:35Speaker 4: but third double end his point output.
- 27:37Speaker 11: That's number one number.
- 27:39Speaker 5: Basically what Jack Hughes did in a year or two
- 27:41Speaker 5: pro rated. But yeah, go on, el Sorry.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Secondly, Matty Beaneers, Matty Beaniers needs to take the reins
- 27:47Speaker 4: of this team and lead from an offense standpoint. You know,
- 27:51Speaker 4: Thanks Jordan Niberly, you know, great job helping me develop.
- 27:55Speaker 4: I'm now you know, the captain, not literally, but the
- 27:57Speaker 4: captain of the points. He's going to take the lead
- 27:59Speaker 4: next year year. Shane Wright. You know, regardless of what happens,
- 28:04Speaker 4: if he's on this team next year, if he's on
- 28:06Speaker 4: this team next year, he needs to have a breakout year.
- 28:10Speaker 4: We can't go through another year of mediocre Shane Wright.
- 28:14Speaker 4: He's got to have a breakout year.
- 28:16Speaker 11: Consistent.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Play too many ups and downs this season, too many
- 28:20Speaker 4: four or five, six, seven whatever, losing streaks and then
- 28:23Speaker 4: back on three or four or five. This team has
- 28:25Speaker 4: to play consistent. Yeah, they're not going to win every game,
- 28:28Speaker 4: but they need to be in every game and I
- 28:30Speaker 4: think that's when you have consistent play. And then the
- 28:32Speaker 4: last thing is what I want to see next year
- 28:35Speaker 4: is I want to see these special teams get get
- 28:37Speaker 4: reversed around. I want to I'm not asking for top five,
- 28:40Speaker 4: but you've got to get back.
- 28:41Speaker 11: To the middle of the league or better.
- 28:43Speaker 1: You know, you talked about the ups and downs of
- 28:45Speaker 1: the season. I mean, you go back to Thanksgiving right
- 28:49Speaker 1: out of the right around Thanksgiving the crack and we're
- 28:52Speaker 1: one five and one, or we'll sorry, one nine and
- 28:57Speaker 1: one over an eleven game stretch. Go to January they
- 29:02Speaker 1: were one five and two over an eight game stretch
- 29:06Speaker 1: and obviously you know the crack and they were able
- 29:08Speaker 1: to put together some some wins and they had some
- 29:11Speaker 1: good stretches in there. But there were far too many
- 29:14Speaker 1: one blank and ones, two blanking ones this season and
- 29:20Speaker 1: not enough nine three in ones. You know what I mean.
- 29:24Speaker 1: And I think you're right. Like Lane, I thought said
- 29:29Speaker 1: it perfectly in the last media veill was at Colorado.
- 29:33Speaker 1: You go back to the season, there's probably six games
- 29:36Speaker 1: this year that you're like, man, if they had a
- 29:39Speaker 1: gone this way or the other way, we're still playing hockey. Yes,
- 29:43Speaker 1: Lane's not wrong. But I look at one five, eight, one,
- 29:48Speaker 1: eight and two in March. I look at one nine
- 29:52Speaker 1: and one in November, all right, So that's two seventeen
- 29:57Speaker 1: and three, right, So that is twenty what's my math,
- 30:01Speaker 1: twenty two games? Twenty two games right there in which
- 30:05Speaker 1: you could have had a better You go five hundred
- 30:09Speaker 1: in those twenty two games, you go ten, ten and two.
- 30:12Speaker 1: You're in the playoffs. You don't need to be world beaters.
- 30:15Speaker 1: So I'm with you, Al, you don't need to win
- 30:18Speaker 1: every game, but you can't have these abysmal stretches multiple times.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Everyone's gonna have one, right, Everyone's gonna have a stretch
- 30:28Speaker 1: every even Colorado this year had a couple of me stretches.
- 30:31Speaker 1: You can't have more than a couple of more than
- 30:34Speaker 1: one or two match stretches. I go back to Dave
- 30:36Speaker 1: Haxtalls last year, cracking we're eight oh and two at
- 30:40Speaker 1: one point. That was that that followed up an oh
- 30:46Speaker 1: ten and one stretch, or sorry that with that preceded
- 30:49Speaker 1: in ten and one stretch.
- 30:50Speaker 11: So you go eight oh and two.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Hoy buckets, boys, here we are. We're going to the
- 30:55Speaker 1: playoffs and then you immediately fall off the table. Annaheim
- 30:59Speaker 1: did that a last year. I think they were seven
- 31:02Speaker 1: to one and whatever and then they went one, twelve
- 31:05Speaker 1: and whatever. The Arizona Coyotes their last season in Arizona,
- 31:08Speaker 1: they did that. They were I want to say, ten
- 31:11Speaker 1: to two and something and then they go one, fifteen
- 31:14Speaker 1: and three and that essentially kicks their butt out of
- 31:17Speaker 1: the playoffs. So you're right, man, the stretches. You gotta
- 31:21Speaker 1: be more flat lined or obviously more up, a little
- 31:25Speaker 1: dip down. But this isn't Disney. You can't be going
- 31:28Speaker 1: on the Credit coaster all year long, up and down,
- 31:32Speaker 1: up and down. I think that ultimately sealed the fate
- 31:36Speaker 1: for this team.
- 31:37Speaker 10: It's fun number ten. It's destructive when you're a twenty
- 31:40Speaker 10: five year old NHL player. Avoid the roller coasters. Jordan Everley,
- 31:44Speaker 10: Coppocco and snippets from GM Jason Botterol's news conference after this,
- 31:50Speaker 10: plus our reaction coming not too far after that right
- 31:54Speaker 10: here on Cracking Weekly on ninety three to three KJRFM.
- 31:57Speaker 10: All right, for all the change we're talking about, well,
- 31:59Speaker 10: you can certainly see that there is one constant as
- 32:02Speaker 10: far as playoff action. And that's what the Kracken affiliate
- 32:04Speaker 10: in ahl Coachelle Valley. The Firebirds opening up the Calder
- 32:09Speaker 10: Cup playoffs in Game one of their best of three

- 32:44Speaker 10: also on the playoff roster for them. The Firebirds once
- 32:47Speaker 10: again opening up their first round series at Bakersfield. More
- 32:51Speaker 10: information by the way at Cvfirebirds dot com. Everett now
- 32:56Speaker 10: back with us soon again GM, Jason Bottrell's reaction waiting
- 32:59Speaker 10: and a little bit Mike Benton again with you right
- 33:01Speaker 10: back here on Crack and Whekley. But we're going to
- 33:03Speaker 10: get to a couple of conversations, beginning with a look
- 33:07Speaker 10: into the future for the Kraken and what's to come
- 33:09Speaker 10: when they head overseas next season to the NHL Global
- 33:12Speaker 10: Series in Finland. Plus also what this guy learned from
- 33:16Speaker 10: the numbers, which took a massive uptick toward.
- 33:19Speaker 5: The very end of the regular season.
- 33:21Speaker 10: He was their leading score after the Olympic break with
- 33:24Speaker 10: nineteen points in twenty six games. That's cop Ocaco And
- 33:28Speaker 10: here's our one on one conversation with him from.
- 33:30Speaker 5: Clean out Day.
- 33:31Speaker 10: Coppocaco joining us here in the last of this team
- 33:33Speaker 10: comes together at Krack and Community ice Plex before this
- 33:36Speaker 10: season is all over here in Coppo. First off, I
- 33:39Speaker 10: think a lot of us are still kind of absorbing
- 33:41Speaker 10: the reaction from the frustrations of this last month, month
- 33:46Speaker 10: and a half. Where did that leave you right now today?
- 33:49Speaker 10: As far as where this team wants to be for.
- 33:51Speaker 13: This next season, yeah, I mean that was the goal
- 33:54Speaker 13: for this season also, like we want to we're going
- 33:56Speaker 13: to keep playing off the deir Glar season. We want
- 33:59Speaker 13: to make the playoffs and I mean didn't happen this year.
- 34:03Speaker 13: I mean for sure that's the goal for the next one.
- 34:07Speaker 13: We already know that. I feel like there were some
- 34:12Speaker 13: some good games, and I mean before the break the Olympics,
- 34:16Speaker 13: we were in a good spot, That's how I feel,
- 34:19Speaker 13: and just just not enough and we couldn't get it done.
- 34:23Speaker 13: And and now the season is over.
- 34:27Speaker 10: Where are you left right now with the feeling of
- 34:30Speaker 10: where this team wants to go as far as its
- 34:32Speaker 10: growth in culture for this next year under Land Lambert, Yeah,
- 34:36Speaker 10: I think.
- 34:36Speaker 13: There's a lot of good things, like you know, like
- 34:42Speaker 13: you can see some games how we played, like like
- 34:46Speaker 13: I think it was looking pretty good, and you know,
- 34:49Speaker 13: it defended hard, and I feel like all the all
- 34:52Speaker 13: the players gave all what they got, you know, Like
- 34:55Speaker 13: I'm I think that's not the that's not the question,
- 34:58Speaker 13: you know, that's how it should be. I mean, it
- 35:02Speaker 13: was just not enough. I mean, like I said, there
- 35:05Speaker 13: was some real good games I think, especially before the Olympics,
- 35:10Speaker 13: and we just couldn't find it anymore after. So I
- 35:14Speaker 13: mean that's why we are out now.
- 35:15Speaker 10: So Jordan Ebery once said, and he says us over
- 35:18Speaker 10: and over that the line between winning and losing is
- 35:21Speaker 10: so thin, especially in this league, and to win games,
- 35:24Speaker 10: especially under Lane Lambert, we're talking a lot of three too,
- 35:28Speaker 10: maybe two to one games. So when it comes to
- 35:30Speaker 10: that extra edge, is this more of a mental thing
- 35:33Speaker 10: or a physical thing or something else.
- 35:36Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean it would be nice to know. Yeah,
- 35:40Speaker 13: like you said, there was and I feel also, I
- 35:43Speaker 13: mean I was out early in the season and I
- 35:45Speaker 13: was like kind of watching op to Top or watching TV,
- 35:48Speaker 13: you know, and it's not the same like on the ice,
- 35:52Speaker 13: you know, you see different. So yeah, I mean we
- 35:56Speaker 13: defended really well. I feel like, I mean, our goal
- 36:01Speaker 13: is played great also, and there was a lot of
- 36:03Speaker 13: games we were winning, like scoring only two goals, three goals,
- 36:07Speaker 13: you know, so you I mean it's a lot of
- 36:10Speaker 13: hard work, a lot of defense, great games by goalies.
- 36:16Speaker 13: I feel that was the that was the start for
- 36:19Speaker 13: the season. That's how we got some big points for us,
- 36:22Speaker 13: and that's why we did so good before the Olympics.
- 36:27Speaker 13: And then I mean there's there's also a lot of
- 36:30Speaker 13: good teams. There's a lot of skill on the ice
- 36:31Speaker 13: when you play against against i mean any NHL team.
- 36:36Speaker 13: So so it's it's gonna be hard for all the
- 36:39Speaker 13: eighty eighty two games. You know, you're gonna have like
- 36:42Speaker 13: all the teams having a good, good stretches and then
- 36:45Speaker 13: like some bad ones. You know, that's how the season goes.
- 36:47Speaker 13: There's so many games also about it. Yeah, I mean,
- 36:52Speaker 13: like I said, you need you need to score more goals,
- 36:56Speaker 13: you know, like than two or three. I mean, but
- 36:59Speaker 13: that's how it went early in the season. Now our
- 37:01Speaker 13: goal is played really good.
- 37:02Speaker 10: The points were coming for you after the Olympic break.
- 37:05Speaker 10: What's the biggest difference in your game at the end
- 37:08Speaker 10: of the season versus say, maybe even one year ago.
- 37:13Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean it was a tough start for me.
- 37:15Speaker 13: I you know, you can see that it's not easy
- 37:20Speaker 13: get hurt early in the season and you're having a
- 37:22Speaker 13: new coach, and I mean you still get the system,
- 37:24Speaker 13: you know, like you know how you should play, but
- 37:26Speaker 13: like sometimes it takes time. I'm not saying like I
- 37:30Speaker 13: was not like I feel I was in the best shape,
- 37:33Speaker 13: Like I can't be even more, you know, like I
- 37:36Speaker 13: felt pretty good, but like when you've been missing a
- 37:39Speaker 13: lot of games just working out, I feel like the
- 37:42Speaker 13: game shape is always different than it doesn't matter how
- 37:46Speaker 13: much peop would work, you know, outside or just skating
- 37:51Speaker 13: by yourself.
- 37:51Speaker 11: You know.
- 37:52Speaker 13: So the start was hard, but then like I feel
- 37:55Speaker 13: after Olympics, I kind of find my game a little more,
- 37:58Speaker 13: got some confidence, know, I try to make more plays.
- 38:02Speaker 13: You know that's that's you know, when you feel good,
- 38:07Speaker 13: you feel like maybe a should try this, and and
- 38:10Speaker 13: like you're not worried about if you turn it over.
- 38:13Speaker 13: I mean that's in my mind, that's hockey. Also, like
- 38:16Speaker 13: you got to make some place. I mean, I feel
- 38:19Speaker 13: we are all skilled players. That's the reason we are here,
- 38:21Speaker 13: and like we get a you know if if you like,
- 38:26Speaker 13: we all know what to do out there, and mistakes
- 38:28Speaker 13: happens like this is it's part of the game. But yeah,
- 38:33Speaker 13: I feel that's what I did more after Olympics. I
- 38:35Speaker 13: try to make place and then end up working well.
- 38:37Speaker 10: We talked a lot about the hands as part of
- 38:39Speaker 10: your game, the strength as a part of your game.
- 38:42Speaker 10: So for this off season, whether it might be strength
- 38:45Speaker 10: or the cerebral side or even skill building, what means
- 38:48Speaker 10: the most to you as far as what you want
- 38:50Speaker 10: to build on for your game this off season.
- 38:52Speaker 13: I think kind of all of those. First of all,
- 38:55Speaker 13: Like just I mean, like I said, I had some
- 38:58Speaker 13: injuries early in the season, and it's it's always a
- 39:01Speaker 13: long season. You're playing a lot, I mean back to backs,
- 39:04Speaker 13: you know, like you I think all of us, like
- 39:06Speaker 13: we are not feeling the best the next, you know,
- 39:09Speaker 13: the next morning when you wake up. So it's just
- 39:12Speaker 13: the first thing is get my body in a good shape,
- 39:15Speaker 13: you know, feel healthy, and then it's time to get
- 39:20Speaker 13: some work.
- 39:21Speaker 1: You know.
- 39:21Speaker 13: Like like I mean, like I said, all those things
- 39:23Speaker 13: I feel I need, I still need more speed. I
- 39:26Speaker 13: feel I'm strong with the puck. I try to keep
- 39:29Speaker 13: it and you know, stay strong, but I think speed
- 39:32Speaker 13: is like if I have to say like one thing,
- 39:36Speaker 13: I would say, that's something I need more.
- 39:39Speaker 10: What do I mean to metal at the Olympics for Finland.
- 39:43Speaker 13: Uh, Like that was that was specially you know, like
- 39:48Speaker 13: something you were thinking about even before the season. That
- 39:52Speaker 13: I mean, it's always it's nice to come here after
- 39:55Speaker 13: a long summer. You've been doing all the work and
- 39:58Speaker 13: you know, like you excited for the season. But then
- 40:01Speaker 13: for this season was like that was one of my
- 40:03Speaker 13: goals to make the team first and then like you know,
- 40:07Speaker 13: be good there and I mean everyone wants to win.
- 40:11Speaker 13: So I mean we got something, not the.
- 40:14Speaker 11: Cold metal, but.
- 40:16Speaker 13: That that that one feels still pretty good and that
- 40:19Speaker 13: was nice. Two weeks with the team. You know, see
- 40:23Speaker 13: all the all the friends you have over there, and
- 40:26Speaker 13: I mean some guys got the nice little wikas and
- 40:31Speaker 13: you know about it. I feel that was also like
- 40:35Speaker 13: that was still hockey about something different, you know, you see,
- 40:39Speaker 13: like I mean first time for me at the Olympics,
- 40:41Speaker 13: so that was that was something special.
- 40:43Speaker 10: Well, we also heard, you know about how long it
- 40:45Speaker 10: took here for the NHL to get back to a
- 40:47Speaker 10: best on best kind of format. Now we had the
- 40:49Speaker 10: four Nations, last year, we had the Olympics, and now
- 40:51Speaker 10: the World Cup is back into the conversation, how much
- 40:55Speaker 10: do you agree that the game isn't a much better
- 40:57Speaker 10: place since we can have more of a cycle of
- 41:00Speaker 10: best on best kind of tournaments here to put the
- 41:03Speaker 10: best stars in this kind of in this kind of
- 41:05Speaker 10: a be a format.
- 41:06Speaker 13: Yeah, as a player, it's something you want to be
- 41:08Speaker 13: part of. Those are good games, you know you're playing.
- 41:14Speaker 13: We played against Canada. I mean that was one of
- 41:18Speaker 13: the hardest game I ever played. I mean we were
- 41:21Speaker 13: pretty close. Also, that was a tight game. I mean
- 41:24Speaker 13: it makes you better player also, like you you are
- 41:27Speaker 13: learning all the time and then like thinking about myself
- 41:36Speaker 13: then fifteen years ago, I was watching those games. I
- 41:39Speaker 13: was staying up if if you know Finland played against
- 41:43Speaker 13: Canada or usay at the best and best, So I
- 41:47Speaker 13: feel that's good for hockey. That's I mean, all the
- 41:51Speaker 13: all the people who knows about hockey, and even like
- 41:53Speaker 13: people who doesn't know, they they want to see those
- 41:55Speaker 13: gids like that's kind of how you get into it.
- 41:58Speaker 13: So I think it's it's it's good and that's what
- 42:02Speaker 13: we what we need.
- 42:03Speaker 10: How pumped are you finally for the Global series this
- 42:05Speaker 10: next year? And can you give us three recommendations for
- 42:08Speaker 10: restaurants out there?
- 42:10Speaker 13: Okay, there's a lot of good ones I feel. I mean,
- 42:15Speaker 13: I'm I'm excited, Like I was excited when I heard
- 42:18Speaker 13: about it first time. I have seen some other teams
- 42:21Speaker 13: doing it and and I mean a little surprised also
- 42:27Speaker 13: that it's gonna be us. I mean, like thinking about
- 42:29Speaker 13: it now, we have totally me, Joannie and Nikka at
- 42:34Speaker 13: the goal, so a lot of things also so kind
- 42:36Speaker 13: of make sense, I would say. But yeah, it's gonna be.
- 42:41Speaker 13: It's gonna be fun playing in front of my friends
- 42:43Speaker 13: and family and and kind of all Finland.
- 42:47Speaker 11: You know.
- 42:47Speaker 13: I think it's gonna be. It's gonna be exciting, and
- 42:49Speaker 13: I feel, yeah, I've been like, guys are giving me
- 42:53Speaker 13: some some pressure already, like, what what are we gonna
- 42:56Speaker 13: do out there? So at games.
- 42:58Speaker 10: We could walk around town the sauna experience, but I mean,
- 43:02Speaker 10: so the food is top notch, though I know it's there,
- 43:04Speaker 10: but I think actually like one, if I would say
- 43:07Speaker 10: one thing, you can do both sauna and a pretty
- 43:10Speaker 10: good restaurant.
- 43:11Speaker 13: It's called Lowly. I feel that's like I have seen
- 43:15Speaker 13: all the other teams been playing there. They've been doing that.
- 43:18Speaker 13: That's what I try to, you know, get the whole
- 43:21Speaker 13: team over there and get the sauna experience, jump on
- 43:24Speaker 13: the on the ocean. I mean, try the salmon soup
- 43:29Speaker 13: at the restaurant. You know there's some some finished food.
- 43:31Speaker 13: So that's something we're going to do for sure. That's
- 43:34Speaker 13: what I try to try to make sure we're gonna
- 43:37Speaker 13: get there during the summer. So if I mean that's
- 43:40Speaker 13: that's only one. There's a lot of good options, but
- 43:43Speaker 13: I mean I was not ready for this question, so
- 43:46Speaker 13: that's the only one I give.
- 43:47Speaker 1: You.
- 43:48Speaker 5: Get your mind spinning a little bit here for the summer.
- 43:50Speaker 10: Well, a lot to look forward to appreciate your time
- 43:52Speaker 10: and to look forward to seeing you once again.
- 43:54Speaker 1: If you must down the.
- 43:54Speaker 13: Rod capod, thank you.
- 43:56Speaker 10: That's Copo Coco joining us well one veteran who is
- 43:58Speaker 10: signed up here for the next seasons and looking to
- 44:01Speaker 10: be a part of turn of the page here to
- 44:03Speaker 10: better and brighter days in the standings. That's Jordan Eberley,
- 44:07Speaker 10: wrapping up his fifth season with the Kraken, second as
- 44:10Speaker 10: captain and enjoying his best goal scoring output in twelve
- 44:14Speaker 10: years with a twenty six goal campaign in eighty contests.
- 44:17Speaker 10: For this season, it wasn't easy, and Jordan Eberley up
- 44:21Speaker 10: for an NHL Award.
- 44:22Speaker 5: More thoughts here from Everley at clean out day.
- 44:25Speaker 10: Jordan, First, I would I want to congratulate you on
- 44:27Speaker 10: the nominee for the Mashington Trophy and a lot of
- 44:29Speaker 10: people were certainly in your corner for your own story
- 44:31Speaker 10: and bouncing back this year. But what was the meaning
- 44:33Speaker 10: to get back on the tracks this year after what
- 44:36Speaker 10: you had to go through last season?
- 44:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean it's that was an a oh oh oh.
- 44:44Speaker 8: I say, this just a rare case and what went on,
- 44:47Speaker 8: and I mean I think it it just I mean
- 44:50Speaker 8: it motivated me to come back and be stronger. I
- 44:53Speaker 8: think that's the biggest thing. And now you know, I
- 44:55Speaker 8: have this motivation in my head now of where this
- 44:58Speaker 8: team can get to and what I need to do
- 45:00Speaker 8: this summer to help that team do that.
- 45:03Speaker 10: What was the biggest difference, if there was any, in
- 45:06Speaker 10: how you were and how you train, how you played,
- 45:08Speaker 10: just based on the nuances that went into the procedure
- 45:11Speaker 10: and how you had to bounce back physically.
- 45:13Speaker 8: Well, I mean there's just a lot of work that
- 45:15Speaker 8: came in, and I think with that work, it just
- 45:18Speaker 8: kind of became a natural routine for me. Probably helped me.
- 45:21Speaker 8: I think, you know, the segue doesn't kill you, makes stronger,
- 45:25Speaker 8: I guess. I mean, you know, there's some moments where
- 45:28Speaker 8: I wasn't sure if I was going to come back,
- 45:30Speaker 8: and the fact that I did and I was able
- 45:33Speaker 8: to have a productive season just makes me want to
- 45:37Speaker 8: push it even further.
- 45:38Speaker 10: Just like a pitcher without an arm, what's a hockey
- 45:40Speaker 10: player without hips?
- 45:42Speaker 6: Yeah? No, that I mean, I was miserable, was what
- 45:44Speaker 6: it was. As a captain.
- 45:47Speaker 10: How do you reflect on this last season with the
- 45:49Speaker 10: goals that you've set to finish out your career.
- 45:52Speaker 8: I think at this stage in my career, I mean,
- 45:54Speaker 8: just winning and getting to the postseason is all that
- 45:56Speaker 8: really matters, you know. Obviously we put ourselves in it
- 45:59Speaker 8: gets before the break, and that'll be kind of the
- 46:01Speaker 8: messages today is that, you know, we failed post break
- 46:04Speaker 8: and it's trying to figure out why we failed. So,
- 46:08Speaker 8: you know, it's a little bit early to start reflecting,
- 46:10Speaker 8: even though we've had maybe a week or two to
- 46:12Speaker 8: think about it. But I'm sure down the stretch here
- 46:15Speaker 8: in the next couple of weeks more will come to light.
- 46:18Speaker 8: And you know, the biggest thing for this team is
- 46:21Speaker 8: just trying to figure out how to get over that hurdle.
- 46:23Speaker 10: We were educated on a potential reset for this team.
- 46:27Speaker 10: How deep it goes? As a matter of question that
- 46:29Speaker 10: from todd light Wiki about a week and a half ago,
- 46:32Speaker 10: and you mentioned players who loved putting on this jersey.
- 46:35Speaker 10: It's a parent that you've been one of them here
- 46:37Speaker 10: ever since day once. So what does culture mean to
- 46:40Speaker 10: you and to this organization and how it can grow
- 46:43Speaker 10: and how it can evolve next year?
- 46:44Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, you want guys who want to be here.
- 46:46Speaker 6: That's simple.
- 46:48Speaker 8: You know, if you happy and enjoy the place that
- 46:51Speaker 8: you're in, you're generally gonna play better. But yeah, I
- 46:56Speaker 8: mean it's it's uh, at the end of the day,
- 47:00Speaker 8: this business comes down to winning, and we didn't get
- 47:04Speaker 8: the job done. So I'm sure you do an internal
- 47:08Speaker 8: assessment from management down and figure out how do we
- 47:11Speaker 8: get better?
- 47:12Speaker 6: And that's the key is just continue to get better.
- 47:15Speaker 10: Yeah, the linemate at points of this season to end
- 47:18Speaker 10: the year in Bobby McMahon, who turned plenty aheads of
- 47:21Speaker 10: what he can do in shooting the puck and with
- 47:23Speaker 10: his speed as well. And you mentioned that you wanted
- 47:25Speaker 10: to kind of clear the way as far as management,
- 47:27Speaker 10: and I'll put yourself in their shoes here for what
- 47:30Speaker 10: might be coming here for him. But what's your best
- 47:33Speaker 10: kind of sales pitch to any kind of player who
- 47:36Speaker 10: is interested in coming here.
- 47:38Speaker 6: I mean just the experience that I've had.
- 47:39Speaker 8: It's the fan base amazing, the facilities that we're able
- 47:43Speaker 8: to use every day, the scenery in Seattle, I mean,
- 47:49Speaker 8: the mountains of the lakes, I mean the vibe here,
- 47:53Speaker 8: that just everything. I've just really enjoyed my time here.
- 47:57Speaker 8: For me personally, I've had two kids here and you
- 48:00Speaker 8: know they've we we call this home now and you know,
- 48:04Speaker 8: I couldn't ask for more amenities, more support in the
- 48:10Speaker 8: community and the management and the ownership, just everything it's
- 48:13Speaker 8: been first class.
- 48:14Speaker 10: See you touched on that word amenities. There are teams
- 48:17Speaker 10: in this league who maybe not don't have it as
- 48:19Speaker 10: good as this team does. And there's one team that
- 48:21Speaker 10: doesn't play too far north of here that doesn't even
- 48:24Speaker 10: have a practice rink. What difference does it make to
- 48:26Speaker 10: have this kind of facility?
- 48:28Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean it just makes it a fun place
- 48:30Speaker 8: to come to. You have everything to help you, you know,
- 48:33Speaker 8: grow your game and become better. And not just that,
- 48:35Speaker 8: but I mean our climate Putch is, in my opinion,
- 48:38Speaker 8: of the best rink in the league. And the fans,
- 48:40Speaker 8: the energy that we create from that building, it's it's
- 48:43Speaker 8: it's fun atmosphere playing.
- 48:44Speaker 6: So I don't think you can ask for.
- 48:46Speaker 11: More on that.
- 48:46Speaker 10: Berkeley Capton began this season with this team, ended the
- 48:49Speaker 10: season with this team. We saw Yannie Newman and spurts
- 48:52Speaker 10: up and down. What separates a young player from entrenchment
- 48:57Speaker 10: in this league?
- 48:58Speaker 8: As far as what you've wanted over the years, you know,
- 49:02Speaker 8: I think just the more that they can play, the
- 49:04Speaker 8: experience that they gain, is only going to help them.
- 49:08Speaker 8: These kids now they have unbelievable skills that the way
- 49:11Speaker 8: that they skate and the way that they handle the
- 49:13Speaker 8: puck and shoot the puck.
- 49:16Speaker 6: This the key is.
- 49:17Speaker 8: I mean, it's a tough league to play, and not
- 49:19Speaker 8: many guys, especially at Kat says at least or nineteen
- 49:21Speaker 8: year old can step in and you know, be productive.
- 49:24Speaker 6: That's rare.
- 49:24Speaker 8: But you gain experience, you gain confidence. Then you add
- 49:29Speaker 8: all the skills and attroutes behind it. You know that
- 49:32Speaker 8: that just grows into a good player. And we're gonna
- 49:34Speaker 8: need him writer, you know, all the young guys to
- 49:36Speaker 8: take a step in order for us to have success.
- 49:39Speaker 10: Your head coach, you two have the Islanders of course
- 49:42Speaker 10: in common. But what's Lane Lambert all about? Through one
- 49:45Speaker 10: season with him as head coach.
- 49:47Speaker 6: You know, he brought exactly what I thought he was
- 49:49Speaker 6: gonna bring.
- 49:50Speaker 8: You know this, the detail, the attention to detail, His
- 49:53Speaker 8: enthusiasm is passion for winning, you know from in my opinion,
- 49:59Speaker 8: we we played to that structure for the majority of
- 50:02Speaker 8: the year until we didn't and that's when things went south.
- 50:04Speaker 8: So you know, I imagine things next year will ramp
- 50:08Speaker 8: up even more, and I hope they do. I hope
- 50:10Speaker 8: they get harder. I hope they get more difficult, and
- 50:13Speaker 8: that just makes us a better team.
- 50:15Speaker 10: You're a dad and you're also a veteran NHL player,
- 50:17Speaker 10: So what's the summer having store for you?
- 50:19Speaker 8: You know, my family gets put on the wayside a
- 50:23Speaker 8: little bit during the season, and you know it's a
- 50:25Speaker 8: part to you know, just trying to be dedicated to
- 50:28Speaker 8: one of my craft too. But you know, I try
- 50:31Speaker 8: to spend as much time as I can with them
- 50:32Speaker 8: in the summer and be around and be in one
- 50:35Speaker 8: place and make up for the time that's lost.
- 50:38Speaker 10: How are the kids, and how's your hockey going.
- 50:40Speaker 6: Yeah, it's good.
- 50:41Speaker 8: Everything is good that we Like I said, we enjoy
- 50:43Speaker 8: it here, but there's a lot of family back home
- 50:45Speaker 8: too that I know they're excited to get back to.
- 50:47Speaker 10: Looking forward a couple of more years here at least,
- 50:49Speaker 10: and what's ahead of here for the summer and the
- 50:51Speaker 10: next year as well. Jordan, always appreciate.
- 50:53Speaker 6: You, Thank you, thank you.
- 50:54Speaker 10: All right, that's our conversation with Crack and Captain Jordan Eberley,
- 50:57Speaker 10: And without further ado, the pathway to change begins right here.
- 51:01Speaker 10: In a ten am news conference from GM Jason Bottrell
- 51:04Speaker 10: meeting with the media, and here's Bottlerel and his first
- 51:06Speaker 10: words since the end of the season.
- 51:08Speaker 9: Well, I think the future of the Seattle Kraken is
- 51:11Speaker 9: very bright. Bottom line is is we're not where we
- 51:15Speaker 9: want to be after five years. It's an important time
- 51:19Speaker 9: for our franchise. We have a strong foundation here, but
- 51:25Speaker 9: changes need to be made. When I was introduced last
- 51:29Speaker 9: year as JM, we are very clear that I would
- 51:33Speaker 9: have final say in hockey operations decisions. We may changes
- 51:37Speaker 9: on and off the ice, to our players, to our
- 51:40Speaker 9: coaches to strengthen this team. When I reflect back on
- 51:44Speaker 9: the season, there are moments that I was very proud of.
- 51:49Speaker 9: Going ten to five and two in January, playing seventeen
- 51:53Speaker 9: games in a month, putting ourselves in a position to
- 51:58Speaker 9: be in a playoff spot at the Olympic break and
- 52:02Speaker 9: at the trade deadline was something that was a big
- 52:04Speaker 9: accomplishment for our group. We talked at the start of
- 52:08Speaker 9: the year about wanting to be in the playoff hunt.
- 52:11Speaker 9: We were, but ultimately we fell short. I think you
- 52:18Speaker 9: saw that with our players last week at the exit
- 52:21Speaker 9: meetings and at final interviews. There was disappointment. There was frustration.
- 52:27Speaker 9: At the end of the day, not making the playoffs
- 52:29Speaker 9: was a missed opportunity, especially for our division this year.
- 52:35Speaker 9: Looking ahead, we will be very aggressive in finding ways
- 52:39Speaker 9: to improve this team. We'll focus on players that can
- 52:44Speaker 9: help and help our team play to lane standard, a
- 52:48Speaker 9: team that plays with speed, that attacks and competes every night.
- 52:54Speaker 9: We'll look at the free agent market, but that can't
- 52:57Speaker 9: be our only avenue. We'll value trades and we'll find
- 53:02Speaker 9: creative ways of continuing to developing our young players next steps.
- 53:07Speaker 9: We've always spoken to all of our players through exit meetings.
- 53:11Speaker 9: We have begun internal discussions as an organization building towards
- 53:15Speaker 9: next year. Todd will update you guys here in a
- 53:19Speaker 9: couple of minutes just on where the audit review is
- 53:22Speaker 9: and we plan to leverage those ideas and those suggestions
- 53:25Speaker 9: in the upcoming months. I'll hand it to Todd and
- 53:28Speaker 9: they certainly look forward to answering your questions.
- 53:31Speaker 12: So that my comments at the press conference about a
- 53:36Speaker 12: week and a half ago definitely drew some interest, and
- 53:39Speaker 12: I'm happy to expand upon that. But you know, it's
- 53:44Speaker 12: we're five years into it, and it's totally appropriate to
- 53:46Speaker 12: stand back and lay fresh eyes on this. But it's
- 53:50Speaker 12: it's not just an outsider, an outside group or a
- 53:53Speaker 12: person that's going to help us do that over the
- 53:57Speaker 12: last number of days, our owner has literally met with
- 53:59Speaker 12: our team captains are coaches. And the positive thing about
- 54:04Speaker 12: that is the guy to my left here supports that
- 54:09Speaker 12: he's not threatened by the process. He's embracing it, and
- 54:13Speaker 12: we will do an audit. We're talking to multiple people
- 54:17Speaker 12: about their potential fit to help lead that. We've had
- 54:21Speaker 12: inbound calls from other enterprises, and we're going to get
- 54:26Speaker 12: it right. There's no timeline to necessarily finish it, there's
- 54:31Speaker 12: no timeline to officially commence it, but in fact it's
- 54:33Speaker 12: already begun and we have an owner who's deeply committed
- 54:37Speaker 12: to winning, and she came away I think from her
- 54:42Speaker 12: discussions with the captains and the coaches, and she's got
- 54:46Speaker 12: a clear vision that there's something great to be built
- 54:49Speaker 12: on here. But we still have work to do, and
- 54:52Speaker 12: so I'm happy to answer questions on that. I'll let
- 54:54Speaker 12: you finish your remarks, and if there's other questions I
- 54:57Speaker 12: can answer on that, I'm happy to do it.
- 55:00Speaker 10: Glory questions, Jason Todd, thank you very much for doing
- 55:07Speaker 10: this here today. And first off, Lane Lambert said that
- 55:10Speaker 10: he'd be working with you kind of with the changes
- 55:13Speaker 10: maybe coming here to this roster potentially. So we've heard
- 55:16Speaker 10: from the team about this with you know how quiet
- 55:18Speaker 10: the locker room was at some points from this past season.
- 55:22Speaker 10: So how much is culture going to be a part
- 55:23Speaker 10: of the conversation with how this roster is potentially turned
- 55:26Speaker 10: over for this next year.
- 55:28Speaker 9: Well, I think it's always You're always working on your culture,
- 55:30Speaker 9: You're always building on that. First off, I've enjoyed my
- 55:34Speaker 9: conversations with Lane two at the season, and I'm certainly
- 55:36Speaker 9: looking forward to We got coaches meetings this week assessing
- 55:40Speaker 9: our entire group, and obviously culture is going to be
- 55:43Speaker 9: a big part of it. I think it's always a
- 55:46Speaker 9: unique mix. We were proud of our culture because we
- 55:49Speaker 9: have players who want to be here. You look at
- 55:51Speaker 9: our track record of resigning players who have come to
- 55:54Speaker 9: our organization. It's, you know, whether you go Jordan Eberly
- 55:57Speaker 9: this year, Matty Benier's accord, players come here and they
- 56:01Speaker 9: want to stay here. I think, you know, we have
- 56:05Speaker 9: young players coming up through our system. I'm proud of
- 56:08Speaker 9: our young players. They're very determined individuals to get to
- 56:13Speaker 9: this NHL standard at such a young age. I think
- 56:16Speaker 9: we utilized I want to say we utilize seven players
- 56:20Speaker 9: under the age of twenty three after the trade deadline,
- 56:22Speaker 9: and that's great experience for them, but it's it's you
- 56:26Speaker 9: saw the intensity down the stretch. You saw the intensity
- 56:30Speaker 9: of playoff hockey the last couple of days. Like, it's
- 56:33Speaker 9: an experience for some of our younger players going through that,
- 56:37Speaker 9: letting sort of mentoring them, teaching them that at is
- 56:42Speaker 9: a big part of our future and what we have
- 56:44Speaker 9: to do from a hockey office standpoint and a coaching
- 56:47Speaker 9: standpoint for our younger players. Same thing within culture, like
- 56:50Speaker 9: we have to continue to help matt Emniirs continue to
- 56:52Speaker 9: become a better leader. We have good human beings, good
- 56:55Speaker 9: people in our locker room, but when they go through adversity,
- 56:59Speaker 9: we have to find different ways of helping them through
- 57:02Speaker 9: that process.
- 57:03Speaker 10: Frad market, we've heard about cap space that you can
- 57:06Speaker 10: weaponize the picks that are available out there. Do you
- 57:09Speaker 10: think that also prospects and young players are a resource
- 57:11Speaker 10: that you can deal from here with this or is
- 57:13Speaker 10: that kind of like a handsoft thing?
- 57:14Speaker 9: You think, no, one hundred percent there. We'll look at
- 57:17Speaker 9: every way to utilize our players to improve our hockey team.
- 57:21Speaker 9: It's putting them into different places and positions honor a
- 57:24Speaker 9: national Hockeyleague team, or if it's something that can help
- 57:27Speaker 9: us get more established players, we'll certainly look at it
- 57:30Speaker 9: the exciting thing where we are now moving towards here
- 57:33Speaker 9: now and then the next phase in an organization. These
- 57:36Speaker 9: players are finally ready. I know maybe our fans and
- 57:38Speaker 9: people are tired of talking about prospects, but you just
- 57:41Speaker 9: look at this year like we finally had from our
- 57:44Speaker 9: first draft, you know, Winterton and mlantson coming in and
- 57:49Speaker 9: being regulars in the National Hockey League. You look at
- 57:51Speaker 9: the twenty two draft, you know, players such as Yanni
- 57:54Speaker 9: Furcus on the defense end, jug Natan Nelson, they're finally
- 57:58Speaker 9: getting into position where they're to play. Unfortunately, we're not
- 58:01Speaker 9: the NFL. It's you know, this week the people are
- 58:03Speaker 9: players are gonna be drafted. They'll be in the in
- 58:05Speaker 9: the NFL next week. It takes a longer process for
- 58:08Speaker 9: these players to come through. What gets us excited is
- 58:11Speaker 9: they're now pushing knocking down the door to play national
- 58:13Speaker 9: hockey games. It's not just sort of oh, down the
- 58:16Speaker 9: road three or four years. They're ready to play now.
- 58:19Speaker 14: Flat cap era presented its own unique challenges now that
- 58:22Speaker 14: the CAP's kind of going up and teams going to
- 58:24Speaker 14: afford to kind of keep their stars if they want to.
- 58:26Speaker 14: What do you see as being the big challenge and
- 58:29Speaker 14: trying to go get frontline pieces with the way the
- 58:33Speaker 14: player kind of management's going with the cap and everything
- 58:35Speaker 14: at this point in time.
- 58:36Speaker 9: No, I think that's you know right there, it's one
- 58:39Speaker 9: of the big challenges moving forward here. Now there is
- 58:42Speaker 9: a lot more cap space available in the market. I
- 58:45Speaker 9: think you're gonna have a lot more budget teams than
- 58:46Speaker 9: just pure cap teams now, So those are the things
- 58:49Speaker 9: to certainly focus in on as possible trade partners there.
- 58:52Speaker 9: But I think you're just even seeing it with this
- 58:54Speaker 9: free agent market this year. Will continue to be aggressive there,
- 58:57Speaker 9: but it's it's there's not a plethora of players out there,
- 59:01Speaker 9: certainly high end players, because teams have just had the
- 59:03Speaker 9: cap space to certainly resign their own guys. So I
- 59:06Speaker 9: think it just goes to show you the importance of
- 59:08Speaker 9: drafting and development. And then also too that I just
- 59:12Speaker 9: added is like, you know, it's finding the right trade
- 59:14Speaker 9: partners to make hockey deals, and that's where we'll certainly
- 59:17Speaker 9: be aggressive on with.
- 59:18Speaker 11: That in mind.
- 59:19Speaker 14: How big a priority is it to try to keep
- 59:21Speaker 14: Bobby McMahon here. Then, given given that and the fact
- 59:24Speaker 14: that he's been here and Ben shown he can be
- 59:25Speaker 14: a scorer for you, and how does he kind of
- 59:27Speaker 14: affect during too your plans here?
- 59:29Speaker 9: You know, look, as we said before, we were very
- 59:31Speaker 9: happy of getting Bobby. You know, he he's certainly delivered
- 59:35Speaker 9: what we wanted to from that perspective. You know, we
- 59:39Speaker 9: also saw off the ice, just our interaction with Bobby,
- 59:41Speaker 9: he's very serious about his craft, about continuing to improve
- 59:46Speaker 9: his game. I think he certainly enjoyed working with our
- 59:49Speaker 9: coaching staff and our development staff on just his own game.
- 59:52Speaker 9: From that standpoint, you know, he fit for for someone
- 59:56Speaker 9: who just came in recently, sticking around with our team
- 59:59Speaker 9: for a little bit to around the area to get
- 1:00:00Speaker 9: to know a little bit more. We clearly going to
- 1:00:02Speaker 9: stand Bobby's going to have options as we move forward here.
- 1:00:05Speaker 9: We've been in touch with his agents. We'll certainly keep
- 1:00:07Speaker 9: those dialogues going on to see if we can get
- 1:00:09Speaker 9: a fit.
- 1:00:11Speaker 15: Your question about the audit you mentioned earlier, just touching
- 1:00:15Speaker 15: on it a little bit as much as you can,
- 1:00:17Speaker 15: what exactly does that look like in terms of working
- 1:00:19Speaker 15: with an entity and individual. How much can you divulge
- 1:00:22Speaker 15: about where you guys stand on the audit of getting
- 1:00:24Speaker 15: that started.
- 1:00:25Speaker 12: Yeah, and so you know it's we've we're talking to
- 1:00:28Speaker 12: a number of individuals. There are a couple of firms
- 1:00:31Speaker 12: that have we're considering will work. They will work shoulder
- 1:00:37Speaker 12: to shoulder with Jason, which is a terrific thing. He's
- 1:00:40Speaker 12: not threatened by it. He's encouraging it. The report will
- 1:00:44Speaker 12: land on the owner's desk, and it's really not going
- 1:00:48Speaker 12: to look at just near term. It's going to say what,
- 1:00:51Speaker 12: over the course of the five years have we done well?
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: What are our core.
- 1:00:54Speaker 12: Competencies, and what are the things we can improve upon.
- 1:00:57Speaker 12: We have some suspicions as what those opportunities are going
- 1:01:01Speaker 12: to be to get better, But it's really a cool
- 1:01:04Speaker 12: thing that the owner and our hockey organization want to
- 1:01:10Speaker 12: lay fresh eyes on this to not only validate what
- 1:01:14Speaker 12: we think, but also potentially uncover things that might be
- 1:01:20Speaker 12: sources of opportunity to fix, but also sources of strength
- 1:01:23Speaker 12: that we haven't fully accounted for. So it's going to
- 1:01:27Speaker 12: be a busy offseason and you know that's ongoing right now.
- 1:01:33Speaker 15: Or something you mentioned your previous experience with plenty of
- 1:01:36Speaker 15: other sports franchises. Is this something that you've engaged in
- 1:01:39Speaker 15: with some of those other teams or where did this
- 1:01:41Speaker 15: kind of company.
- 1:01:41Speaker 12: Has And you know, I've walked into some challenging situations.
- 1:01:45Speaker 12: You know, I've yet to get hired somewhere where everything
- 1:01:49Speaker 12: was running perfectly. And you know this, this situation for
- 1:01:53Speaker 12: the last eight years has had as great a challenges
- 1:01:56Speaker 12: as I've ever had in my career. But there were
- 1:01:59Speaker 12: challenges the Seahawks, or we're certainly challenges with the Tampa
- 1:02:02Speaker 12: Bay Lightning, and you know, occasionally periodically getting fresh perspectives
- 1:02:11Speaker 12: is super helpful, and.
- 1:02:12Speaker 11: That's what we're going to do there.
- 1:02:15Speaker 16: We talked a bit about some of the prospects you
- 1:02:17Speaker 16: already have in the organization, some of the constraints you're under.
- 1:02:19Speaker 16: But this offseason, based on what you see this this
- 1:02:23Speaker 16: is for Jason, based on what you think this team needs.
- 1:02:26Speaker 16: What is on your wish list my.
- 1:02:29Speaker 6: Biggest wish list.
- 1:02:30Speaker 9: Obviously We've talked about looking at everything available, like, look,
- 1:02:34Speaker 9: when you don't make the playoffs, you have to look
- 1:02:35Speaker 9: at everything that's out there. But to me, the biggest
- 1:02:38Speaker 9: thing is just changing your a mix. From a forward standpoint,
- 1:02:40Speaker 9: we're excited about some of the younger players coming in,
- 1:02:42Speaker 9: but we don't we obviously understand that young players can't
- 1:02:45Speaker 9: step into top line roles right off the bat. If
- 1:02:48Speaker 9: we can find a mix of you know, adding a
- 1:02:51Speaker 9: player or two that have more of a track record
- 1:02:54Speaker 9: of producing the National Hockey League also too, you know,
- 1:02:58Speaker 9: we know exactly how Lane wants to play, play with
- 1:03:01Speaker 9: a lot of assertiveness, aggression, speed. If we can, can
- 1:03:05Speaker 9: you find players that are going to willing to go
- 1:03:07Speaker 9: the net and just create more chances there And I
- 1:03:09Speaker 9: think that those are the biggest things that we'll be
- 1:03:10Speaker 9: focused on.
- 1:03:11Speaker 10: Jason, moving forward, what do you consider the strongest part
- 1:03:14Speaker 10: of your sales pitch to potential free agents or guys
- 1:03:16Speaker 10: who maybe you are thinking about coming here via trade.
- 1:03:20Speaker 9: Well, I think it's just things that Todd touched on already.
- 1:03:23Speaker 9: You talk about our ownership, any resources that we want,
- 1:03:27Speaker 9: we have here, our facilities, you know, and just what
- 1:03:32Speaker 9: we have coming you know.
- 1:03:34Speaker 13: It's it's it's exciting.
- 1:03:36Speaker 9: I think the growth of our young players, having these players,
- 1:03:40Speaker 9: having these not only I think what you're seeing right now,
- 1:03:43Speaker 9: it's not just first round picks who are coming in
- 1:03:44Speaker 9: dur a mix such as Shane Wright or Mandy Benier's
- 1:03:48Speaker 9: or Berkeley Caton and eventually Jcobrien. You know, it's a
- 1:03:52Speaker 9: situation of like Jacob Allanson being I want to say,
- 1:03:55Speaker 9: a fifth round pick, it's Ryan Winterton a third round pick,
- 1:03:58Speaker 9: like we have them coming, and I think that gets
- 1:04:01Speaker 9: you know, people excited and stuff about here. But at
- 1:04:04Speaker 9: the end of the day, I think NHL players they
- 1:04:07Speaker 9: want a path of where this team's going, but they
- 1:04:09Speaker 9: also want to look at.
- 1:04:10Speaker 13: A what do we have right now?
- 1:04:12Speaker 9: And I think it's an amazing balance that our players
- 1:04:16Speaker 9: have here, and I know they've talked about it. It's
- 1:04:18Speaker 9: there's a passion level in Climate Plage Arena that they
- 1:04:23Speaker 9: absolutely love right and when we give them a reason
- 1:04:26Speaker 9: to cheer, they're cheering really loudly and have a lot
- 1:04:29Speaker 9: of intensity. And then there's an ability for them to
- 1:04:32Speaker 9: live their lives outside of it. There there's you know,
- 1:04:35Speaker 9: they can get away. They can be fifteen to twenty
- 1:04:38Speaker 9: minutes away from our facilities and they feel that they're
- 1:04:41Speaker 9: on a beautiful lake or just removed from it all.
- 1:04:43Speaker 9: And that balance, I think is something that a lot
- 1:04:46Speaker 9: of our you know NHL players appreciate.
- 1:04:49Speaker 10: All right a lot to unpack those words again from
- 1:04:51Speaker 10: Cracking GM Jason Botterrell meeting with the media. By the way,
- 1:04:55Speaker 10: full news conference podcasted via the Crack and Audio Network
- 1:04:59Speaker 10: on the iheartrate app in case you want to access
- 1:05:02Speaker 10: that a little bit deeper. This also leads us here
- 1:05:05Speaker 10: to our final pull question of the week here for
- 1:05:08Speaker 10: the season on crack and Weekly. What do you think
- 1:05:11Speaker 10: aggressive retool? Are you looking to rebuild here with the
- 1:05:14Speaker 10: young kids? Simple as that. Vote right now at crack
- 1:05:18Speaker 10: an Audio Net and we'll get to your reaction.
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: Plus Everett.
- 1:05:21Speaker 10: Now we all react here to Jason Botteroll's words from
- 1:05:24Speaker 10: earlier today up next right here on Cracking Weekly on
- 1:05:27Speaker 10: ninety three three KJRFM. Before we get to that, let's
- 1:05:31Speaker 10: check in with our radio friends. Of course, you know
- 1:05:34Speaker 10: him as the mayor of Maple Valley. Ian Farness heard
- 1:05:37Speaker 10: one to three also weekdays on ninety three to three KJRFM.
- 1:05:40Speaker 10: Great chat by the way, he had with Jason Botterol.
- 1:05:43Speaker 10: For the full length of that. You can cash that,
- 1:05:45Speaker 10: by the way at the Ian Fornest Show podcast at
- 1:05:48Speaker 10: the iHeartRadio app. But take a listen here with more
- 1:05:51Speaker 10: of that, Ian and Jason Botterol dove into with Berkeley
- 1:05:54Speaker 10: Catton the situation surrounding a possible Bobby McMahon extension and
- 1:06:00Speaker 10: the word aggressive. What does aggressive mean here for this
- 1:06:03Speaker 10: kind of an off season, you're Jason Botterrel heard earlier
- 1:06:06Speaker 10: today on the Ian for Nest Show.
- 1:06:08Speaker 6: I think it goes without saying.
- 1:06:09Speaker 17: I'd be a fool to say that Bobby McMahon wouldn't
- 1:06:11Speaker 17: be a high priority for the offseason. He's gonna have
- 1:06:13Speaker 17: a market.
- 1:06:14Speaker 13: We all know that.
- 1:06:15Speaker 17: Having a conversation with him sitting in that same chair
- 1:06:17Speaker 17: last week, he sounded really plausitivebout Seattle. I think he's
- 1:06:20Speaker 17: on a golf trip with a bunch of guys right now.
- 1:06:22Speaker 17: I think Cale Flurry, I think is in charge of
- 1:06:25Speaker 17: recruitment right now. Given him some strokes or however it's
- 1:06:29Speaker 17: gonna work out. But is there a chance you could
- 1:06:32Speaker 17: get him done if he does want to stay before
- 1:06:34Speaker 17: the draft or before the free agency. Do you think
- 1:06:36Speaker 17: that's gonna go all the way into July?
- 1:06:38Speaker 9: Look, it's something in there. We've stayed in touch with
- 1:06:40Speaker 9: his agent and communication. It's and from our standpoint was
- 1:06:43Speaker 9: a great fit. I think from Bobby's standpoint, was a
- 1:06:45Speaker 9: great fit to Just the fact that he's sticking around
- 1:06:48Speaker 9: a little bit longer, I think is a good sign.
- 1:06:50Speaker 6: From that bit.
- 1:06:51Speaker 9: Look, he's worked hard to he's a player that's gone
- 1:06:54Speaker 9: from the EHL to the HL to the HL. It's
- 1:06:56Speaker 9: a great story behind the scenes with us. It was
- 1:06:58Speaker 9: great to see just his professional how he's always working
- 1:07:01Speaker 9: on his craft too, and just getting to know him
- 1:07:03Speaker 9: a little bit more. I think he think the fact
- 1:07:05Speaker 9: that he had a relationship with Lane from Toronto last
- 1:07:07Speaker 9: year was very helpful in making the mix. The connection
- 1:07:10Speaker 9: over here got to play a little bit more than
- 1:07:12Speaker 9: and had a bigger role here than in Toronto and
- 1:07:14Speaker 9: stuff too, So I felt it went very well. Just
- 1:07:18Speaker 9: his interaction with our organization, interaction with the city, the
- 1:07:20Speaker 9: fact that he's staying around a little bit longer too,
- 1:07:22Speaker 9: just to see the environment is a good sign. And
- 1:07:24Speaker 9: you know, this is where we'll have to push things
- 1:07:26Speaker 9: with this agent for sure. At the end of the day.
- 1:07:29Speaker 9: You know he's gonna have options. This is a unique
- 1:07:31Speaker 9: environment for him from that standpoint. But no, we were
- 1:07:35Speaker 9: we were glad to get him at the trade deadline,
- 1:07:37Speaker 9: and uh no, we would certainly do that over again
- 1:07:39Speaker 9: for sure.
- 1:07:40Speaker 17: Uh and Boss, before I let you go, I just
- 1:07:42Speaker 17: kind of look at the the overall off season. There's
- 1:07:45Speaker 17: going to be changes. It's that's just the way the
- 1:07:47Speaker 17: NHL works. Yeap, what's the easiest that's the wrong word.
- 1:07:50Speaker 17: What's the best way to do it? And you kind
- 1:07:52Speaker 17: of alluded to this in the news conference, but I
- 1:07:53Speaker 17: mean it's like, hey, go out, everyone's got salary cap
- 1:07:56Speaker 17: room right attracting free agents and you can address it
- 1:07:59Speaker 17: if it's challenge here or not. You talked to Stevenson
- 1:08:02Speaker 17: and Monty and guys like that. Ebbs are stuck around.
- 1:08:04Speaker 17: It feels like if you get people here, you're good.
- 1:08:07Speaker 17: It's just like trying to convince them that it's not
- 1:08:09Speaker 17: somewhere out in Alaska or something like that. And but
- 1:08:12Speaker 17: what's the eat what's the best way to try to
- 1:08:14Speaker 17: build that? And add to what you just said earlier, Yep,
- 1:08:16Speaker 17: there's a foundation. How do you add to that?
- 1:08:19Speaker 9: So from a free agent market, we'll certainly be engaged
- 1:08:22Speaker 9: with them. But you just look at it right like
- 1:08:23Speaker 9: it's a it's not a monster year this year because
- 1:08:26Speaker 9: of the extra cap space and that cap continue to
- 1:08:28Speaker 9: go up most teams have already signed their players, So
- 1:08:32Speaker 9: are we going to be engaged? Are we going to
- 1:08:33Speaker 9: be looking at that, Yes, but it can't be your
- 1:08:35Speaker 9: only model in improving your team. I think the bigger
- 1:08:38Speaker 9: area is continuing to find creative ways of developing our
- 1:08:40Speaker 9: own players.
- 1:08:41Speaker 13: That's what we're on too.
- 1:08:42Speaker 9: And hey, it's the trade market.
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: I think that's the way to go it.
- 1:08:45Speaker 9: Looking at different teams that hey are in similar boat,
- 1:08:48Speaker 9: tusts that maybe just missed the playoffs or wanted to
- 1:08:51Speaker 9: make adjustments to their group. That's what you have to
- 1:08:53Speaker 9: focus in on and stuff a lot.
- 1:08:55Speaker 17: So the word aggressive off season has been used a lot.
- 1:08:58Speaker 17: So aggressive probably means whether it's you said earlier yep, No,
- 1:09:03Speaker 17: I mean this is you're open for business right like
- 1:09:06Speaker 17: like you know, or would you be open to trading
- 1:09:07Speaker 17: young guys? I think you said yes, a ton of
- 1:09:09Speaker 17: draft picks as equity and that's probably a really good
- 1:09:12Speaker 17: place to be, right. So to find aggressive offseason.
- 1:09:16Speaker 9: Hey, it's it's our team has to take a step
- 1:09:19Speaker 9: next year, right and we have to continue to go
- 1:09:20Speaker 9: from there. We're going to make changes from that bit
- 1:09:22Speaker 9: and we're going to be involved in look trade discussions
- 1:09:25Speaker 9: are always interesting. Sometimes it happens right away, sometimes it
- 1:09:28Speaker 9: takes time, and I can't sit here and say that's
- 1:09:30Speaker 9: going to happen on you know, June fifteenth, or June
- 1:09:33Speaker 9: twenty fifth or July fifteenth, But I can just assure
- 1:09:36Speaker 9: you that, you know, throughout the summer, throughout the fall,
- 1:09:39Speaker 9: we're going to be aggressive and trying to add to
- 1:09:40Speaker 9: our group, parent and stuff from that standpoint, because we
- 1:09:42Speaker 9: have pieces that we're very proud about. We're excited about
- 1:09:45Speaker 9: some of these pieces, how much they want to be
- 1:09:47Speaker 9: here in Seattle and their growth. Now, it's imperative that
- 1:09:50Speaker 9: we find some pieces to support them, to help them
- 1:09:53Speaker 9: and take the next step next year.
- 1:09:54Speaker 17: And I know that there's discussions taking place with assistant coaches,
- 1:09:57Speaker 17: so that's still up in the air, right with it
- 1:09:58Speaker 17: with Lane's staff that Lane is back, correct.
- 1:10:01Speaker 9: Yes, I've enjoyed working with Lane. It's as I said
- 1:10:03Speaker 9: in my press conference, he came as advertised, was very
- 1:10:07Speaker 9: direct with our players, brought the intensity, brought accountability, brought
- 1:10:10Speaker 9: structure to our group, which I like to see. And hey, look,
- 1:10:15Speaker 9: I enjoyed having that partnership with him. Over the next
- 1:10:17Speaker 9: couple of weeks here his staff, our players will continue
- 1:10:20Speaker 9: to those that dialogue then roll into pro scutting meetings
- 1:10:24Speaker 9: and amateur scouted meetings and then obviously the combine at
- 1:10:27Speaker 9: the end of May.
- 1:10:29Speaker 10: Starters June all right, reaction from GM Jason botterrel and
- 1:10:32Speaker 10: his news conference coming up here back here on Cracking Weekly,
- 1:10:35Speaker 10: last one for the entire season. Mike Benton Everett fits you,
- 1:10:39Speaker 10: Al Kaniski and our poll question once again this offseason,
- 1:10:44Speaker 10: fifty nine percent of you say retool through trades and
- 1:10:48Speaker 10: the free agency market.
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: Once again.
- 1:10:50Speaker 10: That poll still ongoing right now at Cracking Audio Net
- 1:10:54Speaker 10: without further ado. It's time to react ever written now
- 1:10:57Speaker 10: joining us right now here before we get out. And
- 1:11:01Speaker 10: I think if there is one theme that we look
- 1:11:04Speaker 10: at from this is that there are three words that
- 1:11:08Speaker 10: come to mind, and it's wake up call because we've
- 1:11:10Speaker 10: gone through five seasons, four times here missing the Stanley
- 1:11:14Speaker 10: Cup playoffs. And I think for me, the big thing
- 1:11:16Speaker 10: is you can easily look at the merits of trying
- 1:11:19Speaker 10: to rebuild tear this whole thing down, but playoffs have
- 1:11:23Speaker 10: always been a part of the conversation, and from off
- 1:11:27Speaker 10: the bat, I think that was what was answered first
- 1:11:30Speaker 10: and foremost the trade component of this.
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: The biggest challenge.
- 1:11:34Speaker 10: Will not be to add through free agency, because there's
- 1:11:36Speaker 10: just not much out there. The biggest key is going
- 1:11:39Speaker 10: to be getting Bobby McMahon locked up asap and then
- 1:11:43Speaker 10: finding whatever you can get via trade.
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: And I would even go this far to even.
- 1:11:47Speaker 10: Say, or there may be trade conversations from this last season,
- 1:11:51Speaker 10: well watch out.
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: Those could maybe spill over from last year into maybe
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: June and July.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I think the big thing that I was left
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: with this press conference was it was hope and it
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: was one of those It didn't feel like lip service.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: It felt like there was a genuine sense, if I
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: can say this, of anger, of pissed offness, of like, hey,
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: this is not good enough. And it was very upfront,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: It was very open. I felt that Jason and Todd
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: were both vulnerable in some areas as well, which I
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: think is always good as far as transparency say goes.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: But I think, you know, for like, like you said, Mike,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: free agencies off the table. I think when you look
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: at Bobby McMahon, you look at Alex Tuck. For me,
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: those are your two free agency whales. You know, Alan
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: and I were talking about maybe even a Patrick Kane.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: You're bringing a guy like that to work with, you know,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: a Berkeley Cat and a skilled guy like that. But
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: there really isn't going to be that difference maker in
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: the freegency class this year. So you're looking at trades,
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: you're looking at those relationships that you've built over your career,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: and I think with in that regard, I mean, I've
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: said this before, there are going to be some uncomfortable
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: and unpopular moves that are going to be made, whether
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: that's going to be for rostered players, whether that's going
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: to be for prospects that you've grown attached attached to. Obviously,
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: you've got your four firsts and what is it, twelve
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: overall picks in the first two or three rounds in
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: the next three drafts two or three drafts, so you
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: have a lots of play with here, but they got
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: to play with it. I mean, I remember going into
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: the draft last summer, I said, man, I really don't
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: know if the Kraken should come home with all ten
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: of their picks selected. And they did, but no, I
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: was left feeling optimistic and hopeful and this feeling of like,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: all right, everyone from the top down is now openly
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: you know, this isn't good enough and we're going to
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: fix it.
- 1:13:49Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: I think that one of the words that to me,
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: you know, every time we talk and we talk about
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: what was missing or what's needed for next season, it's
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: nice to hear some of that repeated in conversations like this.
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: And the word that was repeated that I liked was
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: consistency and play. I think that was a big issue
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: over the course of this eighty two game schedule, where
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: it was just too many ups and downs in the
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: in the winning and losing, and I think that's something
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: that Jason Botrell talked about wanting to fix a little bit.
- 1:14:17Speaker 11: How do you fix that?
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: He mentioned offense, This team still needs more offense. I
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: think he talked about the young players as well, specifically
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: Berkeley cat and the steps forward he made this season
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: and they're looking for more from him. I liked how
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: we talked about leadership that we may not always see it,
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: but Matty Veneers is starting to get engaged more with
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: leadership responsibility. While Jordan Ebley was extended for two more years,
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: you can see that development continuing. So a lot of
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: bright spots there. A little bit about goaltending as well,
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: you know, Joey to coord maybe had a little bit
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: of a step back. I think Philip Gruenbauber maybe a
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: step forward. I'm hoping to see that this goaltending thing
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: next season can also be consistent for a games.
- 1:15:01Speaker 10: It was said that this audit is already underway right
- 1:15:05Speaker 10: now and it's going to take several days. I think
- 1:15:08Speaker 10: where this maybe leads us is to question, where are
- 1:15:12Speaker 10: your priorities with scouting, Where are your priorities with developing
- 1:15:15Speaker 10: the nutrition, the fitness aspect. These are all around the
- 1:15:19Speaker 10: edge of stuff, but it's all going to come into
- 1:15:22Speaker 10: play ultimately, it's going to come right back to roster building.
- 1:15:27Speaker 10: And I thought this is why the question was so
- 1:15:30Speaker 10: important at the end of the news conference, what is
- 1:15:32Speaker 10: your number one sales pitch to free agents to come
- 1:15:36Speaker 10: here or get guys to wave There are no trade
- 1:15:39Speaker 10: clauses to come here, because a matter of fact is
- 1:15:42Speaker 10: you don't have any Stanley Cup banners hanging up right
- 1:15:45Speaker 10: now in the rafters. You don't have necessarily the weather
- 1:15:48Speaker 10: that say Los Angeles or San Jose or Florida can offer.
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: Now, there are different lifestyle things that come into play,
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: but I think what you have to do.
- 1:15:59Speaker 10: Is that going to back to what Jason Botteril said,
- 1:16:01Speaker 10: You have to sell where you will work, and you
- 1:16:04Speaker 10: have to sell the most appealing parts of where you
- 1:16:07Speaker 10: will live in this area.
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: Money, I think also will play a big factor too.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: I also think you're selling the idea that this is
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: still a fairly new franchise. Yes, you're five years in.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: There's been some missteps, but at the end of the day,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: you have the opportunity to be a foundational piece of
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: an NHL franchise, which is something that you don't hear
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: a lot about.
- 1:16:30Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: You know, you go to you go to Vegas, Jonathan Marcia,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: so Marc Andre Fleury, They're going to be foundational pieces
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: in the When they unearthed the Vegas Golden Knights time
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: capsule in fifty years, those are the guys that are
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: gonna pop out of that time capsule. William Carlson, Riley Smith,
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: players like that. When you look at the Seattle Kraken,
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: it's gonna be Jordan Eberley, it's going to be Matt Epeneers,
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: it's going to be you know, Philip Grubauer for his
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: play in the playoffs, Adam Larsen as of right now
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: has only missed one ever Seattle Craken game, and that
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: was due to the birth of his daughter. You have
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: an opportunity to be a foundational piece of this organization
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: like that is a legacy building opportunity, and I think
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: that there are some players out there, maybe on the
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: younger side, who are looking for that opportunity.
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: I like at Jereed McCann.
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: I'll never forget Jarreed McCann's press conference in Toronto when
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: he signed that five year deal and his sentiment was,
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: I can unpack all my boxes. I can buy a house,
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: I can set down roots, I can get married and
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: maybe have kids. And Jordan everly what all three of
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: his kids or three of his four kids were born
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: here in Seattle, Right, These are things that I think
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: you can't undervalue and you can't underestimate. So, yeah, you're
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: selling the most beautiful arena in the world, you're selling
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: the best practice rink in the world. But you're also
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: for family, You're selling the idea, and you're selling the
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: opportunity that you can put roots down here and you
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: can be a part of bringing a championship back.
- 1:18:00Speaker 11: To the city.
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that you know, whether it was intentionally
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: humorous or not. The Travel and Leisure article about the settle,
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: I thought that was interesting.
- 1:18:11Speaker 11: Looked it up. It's correct, look it up.
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: I like the fact that they talked about things they
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: can do outside of hockey here very easily listen. This
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: isn't Toronto, this isn't the New York Rangers. There isn't
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: that pressure, and I think some players play better under
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: that lower amount of pressure. So when you're looking at
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: free agencies, heck, when you're looking at the draft, you'd
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: like to try and thuss that.
- 1:18:35Speaker 11: Out about a player.
- 1:18:37Speaker 4: Can they perform in a high, high pressure environment like
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: those cities I mentioned, or would they be you know,
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: more evident it would be more advantageous for them to
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: be in a place like Seattle. So I was a
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: great question, Mike. I I like the answer that they gave,
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: and I think I could add a few.
- 1:18:52Speaker 10: More reactions here from Twitter and X. First off, from
- 1:18:55Speaker 10: just Custin, coaching is not the problem. Just leave that
- 1:18:58Speaker 10: alone and need to get better as far as outing.
- 1:19:00Speaker 10: Find a fifty goal score as well, other wingers who
- 1:19:03Speaker 10: will gel with the centers that we have. And you've
- 1:19:06Speaker 10: got to figure out chemistry, find a couple of big,
- 1:19:08Speaker 10: bad defensemen.
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: We have big, but we need the bad.
- 1:19:12Speaker 10: That from just Custen at Twitter and ex Kevin saying
- 1:19:16Speaker 10: number one priority, re sign Bobby McMahon. Secondly, make a
- 1:19:19Speaker 10: splash and sign a top line or a second line scorer.
- 1:19:23Speaker 10: And then Mike on Twitter and next saying, just too
- 1:19:24Speaker 10: many average players, big cap pets fours need an overhaul.
- 1:19:28Speaker 10: I transition that into this question before we get to
- 1:19:31Speaker 10: not our three stars, but our MVP of the season.
- 1:19:35Speaker 10: The question bears the UFAs if they all move on
- 1:19:40Speaker 10: exception Jordan Ebery, surprise or not surprised.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: I would not be surprised. I think, you know, this
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: is what I was talking about. You're gonna have to
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: make some unpopular decisions. This is now year five, going
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: into year six. I think you're transitioning from that first
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: generation of Krack and hockey onto the next. And two
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: things can be true. They you know, the ever livelies resigned.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: So now you look at Schwartz, you look at Tolvenen,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: you look at Alexiak Matt Murray. You know, three of
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: the four guys have been here essentially since year one.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: They've been a part of this. You know it can
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: very much. Be thank you for your service. You have been,
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: you know, instrumental in helping us establish this organization, this culture.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: But you know what, it's time for us to move
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: on in a different direction. I just mentioned Vegas. Vegas
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: did the same thing. How many players are on their
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: roster now that we're there year one when they went
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: to the cup final. So I would be surprised if
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: all four of them, or if the four came back,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: but especially the three that had been here the longest.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: I think they probably may want to change the scenery,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: and maybe the organization may want to change that voice
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: as well.
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: Yeah, it's interesting you mentioned they might want to change
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: scenery because I think that's an important part of the process,
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: which is trying to understand what's important to the player
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: going forward. It's one thing to say that, hey, your
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: services are no longer required here and you go out
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: and maybe get something or let them go whatever, But
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: you also want to know does the player want to
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: be here in Seattle playing for this organization, because you
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: don't want to waste a roster spot on someone that
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: doesn't have that mindset. So that's an important part of
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: the step two.
- 1:21:17Speaker 10: I think Also, what was so important was hearing Todd
- 1:21:20Speaker 10: Leiwicki about a couple of weeks ago mentioning most players
- 1:21:23Speaker 10: who are proud to wear this jersey. This is where
- 1:21:25Speaker 10: Rubbert meets the road to find out your commitment level,
- 1:21:29Speaker 10: your decision level too buy in, and sometimes players just
- 1:21:32Speaker 10: may want to move on. That's okay, that's the NHL.
- 1:21:35Speaker 10: It is kind of a mercenary type of business here,
- 1:21:37Speaker 10: so to me, ultimately, I would not be shocked to
- 1:21:41Speaker 10: see a lot of these players move on. The Hens
- 1:21:43Speaker 10: from Jason Botterol, the tea leaves here from Jason Botterol
- 1:21:46Speaker 10: back in this press conference said Ford is where we
- 1:21:48Speaker 10: have to get better. But it's pretty clear they want
- 1:21:51Speaker 10: to make room here for a lot of the younger guys.
- 1:21:53Speaker 10: Berkeley Catton's one of them, Jacob Allanson's one of them,
- 1:21:56Speaker 10: and less they move on here via trade. You've got
- 1:21:59Speaker 10: to find a way to build around players like those,
- 1:22:01Speaker 10: especially with stronger support for those like say Matty Beniers,
- 1:22:04Speaker 10: who if you move him down as an example to
- 1:22:06Speaker 10: the two c you're in pretty good position before we
- 1:22:09Speaker 10: get out not our three stars, but our MVP of
- 1:22:14Speaker 10: the season.
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: I will go first to me.
- 1:22:18Speaker 10: I'm gonna go with Philip Grubauer. As we heard, he
- 1:22:21Speaker 10: was the turnaround story of the season for this franchise.
- 1:22:24Speaker 10: It was apparent the structure that was put in place
- 1:22:26Speaker 10: for him with Lane Lambert working with Colin Zulianello, flipped
- 1:22:31Speaker 10: the switch and he dipped right back into the fountain
- 1:22:33Speaker 10: of youth and had his best numbers since his days
- 1:22:35Speaker 10: with Colorado and before the Olympic break, he was the
- 1:22:39Speaker 10: third best goalie in the NHL in say percentage at
- 1:22:43Speaker 10: nine to one six, A bit of a step back,
- 1:22:45Speaker 10: but not too much after that. When the Kraken hit
- 1:22:48Speaker 10: their slide at nine oh nine, it was pretty clear
- 1:22:52Speaker 10: the more and more he played, the more and more
- 1:22:54Speaker 10: Philip Grubauer was helping keep the Kraken in games, sometimes
- 1:22:58Speaker 10: even win games for him, and the soft goals that
- 1:23:02Speaker 10: we maybe saw as compared to the last few years
- 1:23:05Speaker 10: were much more few and far between. I gotta look
- 1:23:09Speaker 10: at this, like you, guys up close, what a professional
- 1:23:13Speaker 10: Philip grew Bauer to me, my team MVP.
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna I'm not gonna go most Valuable Player MVP.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna go most Valuable Person MVP, and that's Lane Lambert.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: I mean to be able to squeeze everything that he
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: did out of this roster, a roster that did not
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: have the superstar power, a roster that did not score
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: a ton of goals to be in a playoff spot
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: for one hundred and seventeen eighteen days this year, given
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: everything that they had, the intensity, he got the buy
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: in from everyone. You had vets like Jordan Eberley, and
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: you had youngins like Berkeley Catton and everybody in between,
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: all rowing and steering in the same direction. And I
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: think we've said this all year long. Coaching was never
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: the problem with this team. So Lane Lambert my MVP
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: Most Valuable Person of the season.
- 1:23:56Speaker 11: Yeah, I love that answer.
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: I'm not gonna go the easier route, point out Jordan
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: Everly at the top of the points list. I'm gonna
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: go second down Matty Benier's fifty points second on the list.
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: I think that Maddy Beaniers took a very positive step
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: forward this season. We talked a lot about Maddi E.
- 1:24:12Speaker 11: Beaniers.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: We're probably a little hard.
- 1:24:14Speaker 4: On him last season, but I think that he took
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: a big step past where he was last season and
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: then some to show us that he can be that
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: leader of tomorrow. He can be that points leader on
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: this team. He can be that captain down the road.
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: His defensive game developed this year as well. So I'm
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: gonna go Matt Evaniers my MVP.
- 1:24:35Speaker 10: All right, this is gonna be fun to look at,
- 1:24:37Speaker 10: fellows where this page turns here for the future, for
- 1:24:40Speaker 10: year six and beyond.
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: This ain't the end as far as Cracking Weekly.
- 1:24:44Speaker 10: We just consider it only the beginning because we expect
- 1:24:48Speaker 10: a lot of breaking news to hit and we will
