Transcript
- 0:01Last time in episode 46, I shared my three most
- 0:05embarrassing Parkinson's symptoms.
- 0:07Things like masked face, forgetting words, that sentence,
- 0:10and not being able to multitask. And wow, the comments went
- 0:15crazy. Many of you said yes, Bryce,
- 0:17that's me too. But an overwhelming number of
- 0:19you had three other symptoms that you said were most
- 0:22embarrassing to you. So today we're flipping it.
- 0:25The first video was mine and this one is yours.
- 0:28These are the three most embarrassing Parkinson's
- 0:30symptoms according to you, the Doing Life Today community.
- 0:34And stick around till the end because the Bryce ISM in this
- 0:36one might be the most real one I've ever shared.
- 0:41Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad,
- 0:45and the Reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 0:49community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 0:53Well, welcome back everyone. If you're new here, my name is
- 0:55Bryce and I've been living with Parkinson's now for over 15
- 0:58years. And on this channel, we talk
- 1:00about the good, the bad, and the reality of life with
- 1:02Parkinson's. So if you're looking for
- 1:04honesty, hope, and maybe even a laugh or two along the way,
- 1:08you're in the right place and hit subscribe and come along for
- 1:12the for the journey. But today, I want to dive right
- 1:15in to the three things that you said.
- 1:18You said we're bothering with the most embarrassing symptoms
- 1:21to you. And the number 11, the number
- 1:23one, one was drooling. Now, this one came up over and
- 1:26over again in the comments. And it's not the kind of thing
- 1:29you want to bring up at a dinner party, right?
- 1:31I call it like the Niagara Falls surprise.
- 1:34One minute you're fine, and the next minute, well, let's just
- 1:37say you're grateful if you're not wearing a dark shirt.
- 1:41I remember being at a family gathering one time, and I was
- 1:43sitting there with my coffee and suddenly realizing that I had a
- 1:46Little River making its way down my chin.
- 1:48And of course, that's exactly what someone always asked for.
- 1:51A picture, right? Smile, Bryce.
- 1:53Sure, Let me just wipe off the evidence first.
- 1:55So how do you deal with it? Well, for me, keeping tissues
- 1:59close by is a must. Some people swear by chewing gum
- 2:03or hard candy to keep swallowing more.
- 2:05Regular speech therapy can help too, because it actually trains
- 2:09those swallowing muscles. And I do have a bracism on this
- 2:14as well. And I did the speech therapy and
- 2:16it really helped me immensely, immensely.
- 2:20But here's your bracism. With Parkinson's, sometimes
- 2:23dignity is as simple as remembering to keep napkins in
- 2:26the glove box. So don't forget that.
- 2:29Don't be embarrassed. Make just make sure you have the
- 2:32right precautions around to wipe it up.
- 2:34OK? The second symptom that was the
- 2:37most embarrassing to you was this dyskinesia.
- 2:41Now this one I didn't include in my first list, but you sure did.
- 2:45Dyskinesia is that involuntary movement, often from long term
- 2:48levodopa use, where your body feels like it's dancing without
- 2:51permission. I once joked that I was
- 2:54auditioning for river dance at a wedding and let's just say
- 2:57nobody was clapping along. The hard part is you feel it so
- 3:01much bigger than it sometimes looks.
- 3:03You know, people ask if I'm nervous or if I've had too much
- 3:06coffee. Nope, just Parkinson's showing
- 3:09off again. So what do I do?
- 3:12What helps? For me, working with my doctor
- 3:14on Med timing made the big difference.
- 3:17Sometimes a small adjustment is all it takes.
- 3:20And find comfortable seating If if I know that I might be
- 3:25moving, I'd rather be in a chair with arms than perched on a bar
- 3:28stool that I'm about to wobble off.
- 3:31So think ahead, Always think ahead.
- 3:34OK, quick pause here. If you related to either of
- 3:37these first two symptoms, hit the like button so more people
- 3:40can find this video and realize that they're not alone.
- 3:43And what about you? Do you deal with these things?
- 3:46Do you deal with truly, do you deal with these things?
- 3:48In the comments, I want to know what do you deal with it and how
- 3:51do you deal with it? You know, many people watch
- 3:53these videos, a lot of people watch this podcast and a lot of
- 3:56people read all the comments. So by you showing up and giving
- 4:00your tips on what you do, you're going to help somebody else.
- 4:03You really are. OK, now I'm going to move into
- 4:05like the third one, the third one, the biggest ones of what
- 4:09embarrasses you. All right.
- 4:11And that third one was bathroom urgency and or accidents.
- 4:17Now this one, yes, this one is a tough one.
- 4:22A lot of you said this was that. A lot of you said that this was
- 4:26the one that embarrassed you the most.
- 4:28And I get it. You know, you can joke about
- 4:30drooling and you can laugh off a wiggle here and there, but
- 4:33nobody wants to talk about not making it to the bathroom in
- 4:37time. All right?
- 4:39And I'll be honest, it happened to me once in a grocery store.
- 4:42I thought that I had time, and I didn't.
- 4:45And I walk. And the walk of shame from the
- 4:48aisle 7 to the exit. Well, yeah, I will never forget
- 4:52that. That was the day that I learned
- 4:54that planning ahead meant more than just making a shopping
- 4:57list. So if you've had issues in this
- 5:01area, know that you're not alone and know that you know others
- 5:07have been there. I've been there, and it's
- 5:10terrible. It's awful.
- 5:11It is embarrassing, and I totally get it.
- 5:14But here are some tips. OK, Number one, always know
- 5:19where the bathrooms are when you go to somewhere new.
- 5:22OK, I always check if I go to a restaurant, to a restaurant, the
- 5:26first thing I check is where are the restrooms?
- 5:27If I'm in a shopping center, where are the restrooms?
- 5:30I'm in the grocery store, where are the restrooms?
- 5:31Always think ahead because if you have to make that mad dash,
- 5:35you don't want to think twice. OK, here's tip #2 carry a change
- 5:40of clothes with you in the car just in case.
- 5:43Just in case. I know it's embarrassing, I know
- 5:45you feel like you shouldn't have to, but just do it.
- 5:48It'll save you in the long run. And my third tip is this, don't
- 5:55be afraid to talk to your doctor because there are actual
- 5:58strategies and medications that can help manage urgency.
- 6:02And you're going really, yes, there really is.
- 6:05Talk to your doctor, explain your issues and your problems.
- 6:08Explain how it's happening. Explain when it happens and what
- 6:11your days like. Track it, like I always say, and
- 6:15bring it up with your doctor and don't settle for anything less
- 6:17than something. Just try something, OK?
- 6:23Now, if you've made it this far, you know what that means.
- 6:26You've unlocked the Brysisms for this one, OK?
- 6:29And here it is with Parkinson's. Embarrassment will show up
- 6:34whether you invite it or not. The trick is learning how to
- 6:37keep showing up anyway. In other words, you have
- 6:43Parkinson's, you're going to be embarrassed.
- 6:46The trick is how you deal with it.
- 6:49So those are the three most embarrassing Parkinson symptoms,
- 6:52according to you in the community.
- 6:54Drooling, dyskinesia, and bathroom urgency.
- 6:58Now, which one of these have you dealt with?
- 7:00Or is there another one that you think belongs on the list?
- 7:05Drop it in the comments. I read every single one and who
- 7:08knows, maybe there's three more that we'll have to deal with and
- 7:11go through. Many can there be, right?
- 7:14How many can there? Give us a break and if you want
- 7:18to go deeper, right? And these type of things are
- 7:21they're hard to talk about in comments in public, but in the
- 7:24inner circle, they're diving deep.
- 7:26There's there's another one that I didn't mention that they're
- 7:28diving deep into right now and they're diving deep hard.
- 7:31So join it. Come on in.
