- 0:45Speaker 3: On the first day, he's doing great. He sits quietly,
- 0:49Speaker 3: breathes deeply, and feels totally enlightened for about fourteen minutes.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Then his brain starts talking, This is boring. Did I
- 1:01Speaker 3: leave the off and on? I wonder what pizza tastes
- 1:04Speaker 3: like in silence? What's that guy doing with his eyebrow?
- 1:10Speaker 3: Is this what mindfulness is? By the third day he's twitching.
- 1:15Speaker 3: By the fifth day, he's convinced that the tree outside
- 1:19Speaker 3: is judging him. On the seventh day the retreat ends,
- 1:24Speaker 3: he rushes up to the instructor and blurts out, I
- 1:27Speaker 3: thought I was going to find peace, but all I

- 1:51Speaker 3: the podcast that helps you find clarity, hope, and joy
- 1:55Speaker 3: one moment at a time. I'm your host, Joe Wattis,
- 1:59Speaker 3: and in today's episode, is all about mindfulness. Mindfulness isn't
- 2:05Speaker 3: about emptying your mind simply, it's about noticing it. It's
- 2:10Speaker 3: about being here, fully present, without judgment. It's learning how
- 2:16Speaker 3: to live this moment, not one you regret or the
- 2:22Speaker 3: one you're worried about. When we learn to pause, breathe,
- 2:27Speaker 3: and tune in, life starts to feel more spacious, more grounded,
- 2:32Speaker 3: and yes, more positive. But before we dive into that,
- 2:37Speaker 3: we have this week's trivia question. Are you ready for it?
- 2:41Speaker 3: Here it is which ancient Eastern philosophy is most often
- 2:47Speaker 3: credited with the origins of mindfulness practice. Take a breath
- 2:53Speaker 3: and we'll have the answer when we come back. Hey,

- 4:28Speaker 3: happy reading. Welcome back. Do you know the answer to
- 4:38Speaker 3: this week's trivia question? The question was which Eastern philosophy
- 4:44Speaker 3: is most often credited with the origins of mindfulness practice.
- 4:50Speaker 3: The answer Buddhism. Mindfulness or sat in the original Paie language,
- 4:58Speaker 3: is a core teaching Buddhist tradition. It dates back over
- 5:03Speaker 3: twenty five hundred years and was taught by the Buddha
- 5:06Speaker 3: as a way to understand the nature of suffering and
- 5:10Speaker 3: how to free ourselves from it through awareness and compassion.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Over time, the practice of mindfulness has expanded beyond religious
- 5:19Speaker 3: contexts and entered into the world of psychology, education, and wellness,
- 5:25Speaker 3: helping people of all backgrounds to find more peace in
- 5:30Speaker 3: the present. Now you know, so what is mindfulness? Really?
- 5:42Speaker 3: It's the practice of being fully here, aware of what
- 5:46Speaker 3: you're doing, how you feel, and what's unfolding around you.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Whether rushing to change it, don't do that, Whether rushing
- 5:56Speaker 3: to judge it, don't do that. It's taking a moment
- 6:01Speaker 3: to actually taste your food instead of inhaling it on
- 6:05Speaker 3: the go. It's noticing your breath when you're stressed instead
- 6:09Speaker 3: of being ruled by it. It's choosing to respond instead
- 6:14Speaker 3: of reacting. The beautiful thing is you don't have to
- 6:19Speaker 3: do it on a retreat, wearing a robe, or on
- 6:23Speaker 3: a mountaintop. You don't need those things to be mindful.
- 6:27Speaker 3: You can practice it right now, right here. Notice your breath,
- 6:34Speaker 3: notice the sounds around you, notice your feet on the floor.
- 6:40Speaker 3: That's it. You're here, and that's where your power is.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Mindfulness can reduce anxiety, improve focus, and boost emotional resilience.
- 6:53Speaker 3: But more than that, it helps you live your life
- 6:58Speaker 3: while it's happening, and that's a pretty incredible gift. Be
- 7:04Speaker 3: where your feet are. Let me close today's podcast episode
- 7:21Speaker 3: with a beautiful quote from John cobbot Zin, one of
- 7:27Speaker 3: the pioneers of modern mindfulness. He said this, you can't
- 7:32Speaker 3: stop the waves, but you can learn to surf. Life
- 7:38Speaker 3: will always bring chaos, challenges, and change, but mindfulness teaches
- 7:44Speaker 3: us to stay steady in the storm, not by avoiding
- 7:48Speaker 3: the waves, but by writing them with presence and grace.
- 7:54Speaker 3: So today my challenge to you is this, pause, just
- 7:59Speaker 3: for a few seconds. Breathe notice, come back to the now,
- 8:07Speaker 3: because now it's all we really have and it's more
- 8:12Speaker 3: than enough. Thanks for spending this moment of time with
- 8:16Speaker 3: me here on Positively three sixty five. Be present, be patient,
- 8:23Speaker 3: and as always, stay positive.
