Knaw County comission Ben Selango is going to be stopping by with an update on
2:25
several things, including the Capitol Sports Complex, also some renovations to the Canawa
2:30
County Courthouse and the latest at Shawnee, some things going on out there.
2:34
We'll talk to Commissioner Selango about state Democratic Party chair and deligate Mike Pushkin will
2:38
be stopping by the show as well. But I want to bring in now
2:40
Tim Brady from the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau. Tim, good morning,
2:45
Welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave, Thanks for having me lt
2:47
I appreciate you being here and I also appreciate you letting us postpone for just
2:53
a couple of days. Originally I told the listeners I had your schedule on
2:55
the show on Monday, but with the events that happened with the former president
3:00
and the assassination attempt on Sunday Saturday rather in Butler, Pennsylvania, I got
3:05
with you and said, yeah, maybe we ought to put that off a
3:07
couple days. So I appreciate you being flexible with this man Absolutely, Manny,
3:10
anytime I can, I can help it out. And I think you
3:13
made you made the right call clearly. So yeah, so let's talk some
3:15
numbers. Numbers, and I guess the press release probably went out last week
3:20
or so. The numbers are in for the Pro Road Bike Championships in Charleston
3:23
in May. And please listeners note that the numbers are going to be crunched
3:28
even further over the next several months. But overall, Tim, give us
3:31
the overall how are we looking? Well? I mean, it was a
3:35
home run, Dave. It was. We calculated a four point six million
3:38
dollar economic impact to our city during those six days of USA Cycling's Pro National
3:43
Championship that included you know, twenty eight hundred overnight visitors. Specifically for the
3:50
cycling event. We saw twenty plus percent increase in visitor spending while the event
3:53
was going on in our city. You know, just all around, very
3:59
solid, very you know, numbers that we're very enthusiastic about. We're bullish
4:03
on year two because now we have proof of concept. We had a successful
4:08
year one with great numbers, and I think that's only going to grow in
4:11
year two. Is now people are more familiar with what the event is,
4:14
and there's excitement for next year, which the dates have been set now and
4:18
it will be May twentieth to the twenty fifth of twenty twenty five, that
4:23
event returns to Charleston, West Virginia. And now, what exactly, and
4:27
this is what you do for a living, among other things, what exactly
4:30
goes into these numbers? When you hear I think you said the three point
4:33
six million dollar economic impact than twenty eight hundred overnight overnight visitors unique visitors for
4:39
this event? What goes into calculating those How do you get those numbers?
4:44
Kind of break that down for the folks. Sure it was four point six
4:46
million. You shorted me a million time. I'm sorry, I'm sorry,
4:48
I'm so let that one fly this time. Yeah, So no, this
4:51
calculates everything from you know, lodging expense, retail and restaurants, spending,
4:58
the economic impact of having these events in the city, and the vendors that
5:01
get paid off of these events. You know, one of the things that
5:03
I'm you know, most proud of when we talked about this event last year
5:08
is that in every instance possible, we used local vendors. Radio communications,
5:14
used a local vendor for all of our auto needs, you know, local
5:18
vendors, low enterprise mental cars, past org we use, we use local
5:25
people. We use local people for ice, for beverage. So it's all
5:28
of these local vendors and contractors that get paid off of the event. It's
5:31
the increase in spending at say the hotel because of the influx of guests,
5:36
so they're you know, paying more hours out when it comes to housekeeping services,
5:43
linen services, things like that. So the economic impact number has you
5:46
know, some multipliers in it that are based on national averages. You know,
5:49
one overnight guests fits much spending, so it takes into account a lot
5:54
of factors, and you know, we certainly do don't do that on our
5:57
own. We use an Economic Impact Calculator is a module created by Destinations International,
6:01
which is an internationally recognized tours and research company. And we get data
6:06
from a company called Zarctico and they track third party anonymous cell phone and credit
6:11
card data that gives us zip code information, so we can see how many
6:14
people are in town for the event, but also where they come from.
6:17
So there's a lot that goes into it. And that's why it doesn't happen
6:20
overnight. These calculations and these reports. It takes some while. That takes
6:25
a while rather to collect all of this data. So you know, we
6:30
were very thorough. It's pretty scientific, and you know, we can confidently
6:32
say that we generated nearly five million dollars in spending in the city of Charleston
6:38
during those six days, which to me is just awesome. It is again
6:41
we're talking to Tim Brady from the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau, and you
6:45
know, there's always those and everybody's got opinions, and everybody's got their right
6:48
to say, whether it's this, or whether it's Regatta or any of the
6:51
activities that go on throughout the region, the state, the nation, whatever.
6:55
They are always those that'll say, well, I mean, I think
6:58
sometimes ten people get the focus wrong and they think about, well, there's
7:01
not that many bike riders in Charleston. Okay, well, I mean there
7:05
are that's mistake number one. But again you're talking about people that came in
7:11
specifically for this event. And I was downtown on the Thursday night with our
7:16
sister station in the Mountain. We did our live broadcast we do at Bar
7:19
one on one and I saw for Steve Animal that night and the people that
7:24
I saw not only in there, but also around the air because there was
7:28
a beautiful evening. I was actually we were outside more than what we were
7:30
inside. And the people that I saw that came in for this event,
7:35
many of whom were just fans. I mean, we talked to some people
7:39
from Virginia that came in just to watch this event. Yeah, that's amazing.
7:46
Yeah. One of the things we learned early on is that the cycling
7:47
community is very passionate, and we did see that. We saw a lot
7:50
of people who weren't competitors, weren't family of competitors, just their cycling enthusiasts
7:56
and they came to town specifically for the race and they traveled to where the
8:00
race is each year. You know, we talked about nearly five hundred athletes
8:05
competing, which is more than they had in Knoxville when the event was hosted
8:09
there, so we increased our rider registration in Charleston, West Virginia. But
8:13
you know it is it's the teams, it's the families, it's the friends,
8:18
it's the cycling enthusiasts that are all coming to town. But it's more
8:20
than that too, Dave, And I'll throw out another statistic to you.
8:24
We saw visitors spending increase during the event, but the percentage of visitors in
8:30
downtown Charleston was actually down compared to other time segments. And what that tells
8:35
us is there were so many locals who came out and were engaged and also
8:39
spending money. By the way, so many locals that were out and engaged
8:43
that it took this influx of visitors and actually sort of watered it down because
8:48
there were so many local people out cheering and ringing cow bells and out enthusiastically
8:54
supporting the event. So from a community development standpoint, yeah, we brought
8:58
in great numbers, greatomic impact. Also had significant community impact because people in
9:03
Charleston just embraced this race and it was wonderful to see. And that's again
9:09
part of why we're so enthusiastic about your two because now the locals are engaged
9:13
and excited about it, and everybody wants to know when is it going to
9:16
be next year, and we're able to now tell them. So it generated
9:20
a lot of community impact as well. And oh, by the way,
9:22
we raised some money for the Mountaineer Food Banks to help fight hunger in our
9:26
community. We partnered with the Stern Wheel Regatta to give away two hundred bikes
9:30
to children from families that need that kind of assistance from low income family So
9:37
we gave away a bunch of boy we got kids on bikes. We helped
9:41
raise money for our statewide food pantry, and we had a great successful event.
9:46
I mean top to bottom, soup to nuts. This was just an
9:48
outstanding week for the city of Charleston. Dave Allen showing five Any Live brought

I guess we're about at the halfway point of summer. We could look
10:13
at it that way. Give her take a little from regatta uh to festival
10:18
to upcoming events like multifest and concerts and the events at Shawnee. Countless other
10:22
festivals going on, too many to mention in the closing seconds here. Our
10:26
stations are going to be a part of the events this weekend with water Days
10:30
at Ladley Field. I know there's things going on over to Gobmark at the
10:33
Gomart Ballpark this weekend. It's been a great summer here in Charleston and the
10:37
entire Canal Valley, and there's there's plenty more to come. Yeah, it's
10:43
it's you're right, it's been a great summer. It's going to continue.
10:46
We've got we bought you failed to mention, and we can talk about this
10:48
at a later day. Yeah. The Harley Ownership Group Eastern Rally is coming
10:52
to Charleston in August. In October, we'll welcome USA Karate with a national
10:58
juniors tournament where we anticipate in the neighborhood of a thousand competitors coming into our
11:03
city. So summer continues strong, and that's going to roll right into a
11:07
really great Paul in the city of Charleston. And then you get into October
11:11
with all of the great October events in our city. So you know,
11:13
we're rolling, Dave, and it's fun and it's exciting, and I couldn't
11:18
be more bullish about where we are as a city and where we're headed.
11:20
Good to leave you with this, text says, Okay, Dave, I'm
11:22

17:10
Start your journey towards better health Today. Commissioner Selango is here. Hey man,
17:15
I'm here having a good summer so far. Yeah, actually getting a
17:18
little family time in. I'm family time and mostly indoors. It's one hundred
17:23
degrees. Well it's looking. I mean if you step outside this morning,
17:26
we had a little fog and little little human this morning. Bit it's going
17:29
to be the next couple of days are going to be good. My yard
17:30
needed it. Yeah yeah, really yeah really. So let's get to the
17:34
Capital Sports Complex no pool now. Yeah, So basically what we did,
17:40
we had a lot of difficulty, that's to put it mildly, acquiring the
17:45
parking garages we tried actually offered him more than they got at the auction.
17:49
Tried very hard to get the parking garage as they simply would not would not
17:59
come to our terms. So you know, you've got to move on.
18:02
And we also who who is the bondholders? The bondholders would not come to
18:07
the term. Yeah, they simply valued it way too high. They thought
18:10
that they had us in a in a predicament where we would come in and
18:14
just throw money and you know, like it didn't matter, and it does
18:18
matter, and you in addition to the property acquisition, there's there's tremendous repair
18:25
issues. Yea, So it was gonna it was going to cost. Now
18:29
when when you look at the the potential economic impact of it, then certainly
18:33
it would make sense. But they we just could not reach an agreement.
18:37
I tried. I mean year and a half we tried. So you just
18:40
got to move on. They can buy them at auction and do whatever they
18:42
need to with them. But so what we did was we also had a
18:48
study commission and they looked at the whether or not it was economically viable.
18:52
Uh, there was going to be a lot of money in the in the
18:56
swimming pool, a substantial amount of money. And and as I've said several
18:59
times construction as our way up. They're kind they're coming down now, but
19:03
uh, they're about thirty percent higher than they were just a couple of years
19:07
ago, So you've got to take that into account as well. So it
19:10
was going to be tremendously expensive. We didn't think we would get the return,
19:14
the economic return on that part of it. So what we've done is
19:18
we're it's not over. I'm not saying we're foreclosing the idea of the pool,
19:22
but we're going to move forward with the part that we know that we
19:26
can do, which is the Macy's building. We were able to acquire,
19:27
we didn't have any issues where it's almost completely torn down, and then we
19:32
should be able to start construction on the Capital Sports Complex, which we'll have
19:36
to rebrand by the way, I've been calling the Capital Sports Complex. We
19:37
can talk about that too. I heard talking about that earlier that you can't
19:42
call it the Capitol Sports Company. Well, we could. The question is
19:45
would it be as effective, and we want something that is. There are
19:52
several other complex is already called Capitals Sports Compacts there are, and so that
19:56
that messes up your you know, for the for the tech people out there,
20:00
not one of them, but for you know, it messes up your
20:02
Google SEO results and so search engine. You know. Yeah, so you've
20:04
got somebody in Indianapolis going to Google Capital Sports Complex. They're gonna get three
20:10
of them, right, So we've got to make sure that we are unique.
20:12
And that's you know, that's the key to marketing, the key to
20:15
branding. It needs to be unique. And so we're gonna we're gonna work
20:19
on that Solango land. No, it will not have my name anywhere near
20:23
it, I promise you. So we've got to we got to come up
20:26
with a very unique name so that it stands out. Uh. But you
20:30
know the part that we're going to be able to do now, which I
20:33
call Phase A. Uh, hopefully there will be a Phase B with what
20:37
it, which would include the aquatic center. Only time will tell. Phase
20:41
A is going to be the basketball, pickleball, volleyball, the gym,
20:45
the rooms with the climbing walls so people can come and rent and you know,
20:49
have their birthday parties and whatnot there that that's going to be a significant
20:53
economic driver. And when you combine that with what the city already has,
20:57
which the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. We can have just major, major
21:03
tournaments. You know, people were right right before Vergatta started. You know,
21:07
we finished up the largest soccer tournament in the East Coast down at Shawnee
21:14
and we had to in fact, it's so big, we have to also
21:15
use Barbersville. You know. It's just a massive tournament. We had like
21:19
twelve to fifteen thousand people in town. It's you know, millions and millions
21:23
of dollars coming in. So that's what you're going to be able to see
21:26
with basketball and volleyball and some of those sports that we'll be able to come
21:30
in. We'll be able to use the Sports Complex and also the Charleston Coliseum
21:33
of Conventions. But the commistry, I mean, it's got to be a
21:37
little bit of a gut punch though, because from day one this thing,
21:40
and you were on this show two or three years ago, whenever this idea
21:41
came out talking about this aquatic center, I was disappointed, to be honest,
21:47
And all I can tell you is that the Mayor and I made tremendous
21:49
efforts to make it happen, and I'm not giving up, you know,
21:53
just because you fail the first time doesn't mean it's over. It just means
21:56
you succeed next time. So what, I'll just keep working on. So
21:59
what of the next steps now, I mean as far as I mean,
22:03
obviously there's a lot of a lot of demolition going on. There has been
22:06
for some time. So what it's almost finished. They're actually working on a
22:10
wall, so we can finish the demolition at the Macy's building, and then
22:12
the architects are hard at work with the design. We'll be able to unveil
22:17
that I believe in around August, maybe August twentieth. I may have that
22:21
date wrong, it's just off my memory, okay, And then we will
22:25
as soon as the architects are finish, we're gonna start construction. So the
22:26
goal is to have have it opened by the end of twenty twenty six.
22:30
That's the goal. So that's you know, it's a major project, but
22:34
I think it's going to have a tremendous effect, not just on Charleston,
22:37
but also Kenwall County in the state. We're gonna have people coming in all
22:40
the time for that. And how many when you say you get the rock
22:44
climbing wall, and you've got the basketball courts and the pickle court. I
22:45
mean, are there are those things in other areas? I mean, how
22:49
big is this thing going to be? That's going to have people that want
22:52
to come in from out of town. What they don't have in other areas
22:56
is the volume that we will have. So we will have you know,
23:00
numerous courts at the facility, but also across the street at the convention center,
23:04
so we'll be able to combine them both so when people come in,
23:08
they won't have to leave, you know, in other areas. And you
23:11
know, Akron has I think one of the biggest basketball travel basketball tournaments in
23:15
the country every year, but they can't have it at one facility. It's
23:18
kind of spread out all over, similar to what we're doing a Shawnee with
23:22
the with the regional tournament every USU soccer. We have to spread it out
23:27
so people, you know, one game they may be at Shawnee. The
23:30
next game they have to drive to Barbersville. We don't want that to happen.
23:33
So what we're going to do. The reason why this is going to
23:34
be quite frankly better than other regions is because we're going to have it all
23:41
under one essentially one roof. You just got to cross the street, you
23:44
know, to play, and people can stay here, you know, they
23:47
can stay at the hotels downtown. Hopefully there will be more hotels. I
23:49
know there's at least one more coming, hopefully two more, and we'll be
23:52
able to generate significant money for our local businesses. Well and for those people
23:56
that say, you know, as I deligate. Kaye Young told me one
24:00
time. She told me this, she said, and I believe it or
24:03
not, I learned something from Kaylee Young. She said, don't read the
24:07
comments on news stories, and there were those about this, Well, Charleston's
24:12
a ghost town anyway. Yeah, I disagree with that. I think Charleston
24:17
the entire Kenaal Valley for that matter. Yeah, no, I disagree,
24:22
And I see those comments, and I quite frankly, sometimes I do read
24:23
the comments, and sometimes I learned from the comments, sure, you know,
24:26
and I truthfully, some of the best ideas that we will get will
24:33
start from someone who calls in with a negative comment. We've made tremendous upgrades
24:38
with Shawnee based upon several comments that people made, and they would call me
24:41
directly. And I said this back when we built Shawnee in seventeen and eighteen.
24:47
I read the comments particularly back then, you know, and we made
24:51
significant changes and it was all for the better. So yeah, don't be
24:53
shy about the comments. You want to make them, make them. But
24:56
ave Allen Show and five any Lie Bright to you. Part by Bridge Valley.
24:59

25:02

25:10
They can also supply a skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company. There's
25:12
a Bridge Valley dot edu slash apprenticeships today. Speaking of Shannee, what's going
25:18
on out there? We have a major, well two things going on.
25:21
Number one, you know, we are still working on the security upgrades.
25:25
McNeil fence has apparently they've get all the new gates in that is going to
25:30
start on Monday. They promised me that it will be finished by the end
25:33
of the week, you know, making sure that we have those emergency exit
25:37
bars. That issue is still on the forefront, which was somewhat called into
25:41
question. What was it a month or so ago the shooting. It was
25:45
not there but away from there. Yeah, it was two blocks away,
25:48
but people thought it was there. You know, it sounded like it was
25:49
there because it was a high caliber weapons that were used nearby, and you
25:53
get that echo. You don't know where in the world people are shooting from.
25:56
Honestly, the first call that I got they said that the shooting was
26:00
at the facility, so I thought it was there as well. So anyway,
26:03
those emergency bars, those new gates are coming in. They're supposed to
26:07
be here Monday. They're going to be installed by the end of next week.
26:10
So that'll be a tremendous upgrade at the complex. Then we have the
26:15
new entrance building. You know, thankfully Governor Justice and Senator Joe Manson gave
26:22
us grants to build a new building. We did not have the restroom capacity
26:27
at Shawnee quite frankly that you know, people were standing in line for restrooms,
26:30
they were standing in line for concessions, and so we are essentially tripling
26:36
or quadrupling the size of that building so we'll be able to host more people
26:40
will have it. It'll change the way that you come into the park,
26:42
which will be for the better. So we're excited about that. That should
26:45
be fin It's going to take about twelve months. We think I'm hoping to
26:48
get it done in nine, but we'll see. So what's going on at
26:52
the courthouse. I mean, you've been some renovations going on there and then
26:56
speaking of comments, so at least text we got some text feed a reak
26:57
go ahead. That's fine. The the courthouse, you know, we've got
27:00
a it's going to be about a ten million dollar upgrade. So the legislature
27:04
increased the number of circuit judges. We got an additional circuit judge, rich
27:08
Lindsay won that race, and then we've got three additional mattates. So we
27:12
had to upgrade the facility. We had to expand there were some other things
27:15
we need to do. Anyway, the courthouse is a bit dated. I
27:18
think it's about forty years old. I may be wrong on that, but
27:22
it's about forty years old. And we've already made some upgrades with the HVAC
27:26
and right after COVID we're able to do that, but we have to expand.
27:30
That is a major project. So we've got three or four major projects
27:33
going on in Kanwak County that's going to start very soon. We're going out
27:36
to bid in August on that project, and we hope to have a construction
27:41
start in October. Obviously, we've got the new judges, a new magra
27:45
starting in January. So the goal is to have one new circuit judge chamber
27:48
finished in January twenty twenty five when the new judge comes in, and then
27:52
we've got hopefully the magistrate area will be finished in March of twenty five.
27:56
Now that's ambitious. And I'm sitting here, you know, I look at
28:00
these dates and I'm thinking, how in the world are they going to be
28:02
able to do that in just a couple of months. We'll see. They
28:04
told me they will, So I'll be over there, you know, monitoring
28:07
the tap of the foot. Gone, let's all right, Texas. Dave
28:11
asked the commissioner. Why why most counties have courthouse records online but not can
28:17
off. That's a good question. I think the uh, you know some
28:21
and there are two different types of court outdrugs. You got the litigation,
28:23
you know, the circuit clerk's office with the litigation. Some of that is
28:29
online, not all of it. Some of the information contains sensitive information.
28:33
For instance, when there's a deck collection. It'll include data birth and social
28:37
security. So you can't automatically upload that because it could be don't know.
28:41
Other counties do that. Sometimes they do as long as they redact the information.
28:45
So I'm in favor of having all that information online. The other part
28:49
of it are the county records, so you know, it's you can get
28:53
now all the tax informations online. You can get on there and see what
28:56
the taxes are, and you know, the personal and real property, but
29:00
the deeds aren't online. And honestly, I think that should that should happen,
29:03
and so I've commented for a couple of years now that we need to
29:07
make sure that that's available for search online. That's something that you plan on
29:11
working on, you and the other commission. There's something I'm in favor of
29:14
now. What that entails to go back and get one hundred plus years of
29:18
records and scan them in and upload and make it searchable. That's a big
29:23
project. So but it's it's got to happen. I mean, we can't
29:27
just you know, pretend like it's you know, nineteen sixty. We got
29:30
to actually upgrade Tex says going back to the sports complex. But we don't
29:36
have a pool now, the wise pool is constantly down. Why not pool?
29:40
First, we have soccer courts, we have pickle ball courts, we
29:41
have basketball courts. Where are the pools in the winter? Yeah? No,
29:45
I agree, I agree. We and you know, the county spent
29:48
a tremendous amount of money trying to keep the uc pool going. You know
29:52
that was there were construction issues, that were maintenance issues, There were tons
29:56
of problems. We spent hundreds of thousands in UH so that people would be
30:00
able to go and use that pool. So I agree that a pool was
30:06
needed. That the problem is the pool is not going to generate and we've
30:08
got study after study to show this. The pool will not generate the economic
30:11
impact that the other part will. Really I thought it would. It will
30:15
not because when you when you're talking about bringing in a girls volleyball team,
30:19
for instance, they're traveling with tons of people. You look at you know,
30:25
look at the soccer match. We had one tournament that lasted five days.
30:27
It brought in twenty four million dollars. Two weeks before that, we
30:32
had the Regional President's Cup that brought in eight million dollars. Because they're coming
30:37
in there and they're they're they're staying here for five or six days, and
30:41
they're bringing family members. So you're booking hotels, you're eating at restaurants,
30:45
you're shopping, you're getting gas, you're doing all the things. Swimming is
30:49
a big sport, but it doesn't travel like those sports do. That makes
30:55
sense, And that's just the that's just the economic reality of it. There.
30:57
You know, you can google and and see all that information, but
31:00
you know, we've studied it. We've studied it several times, and the
31:06
the truth is the other side, which I call the money making side.
31:10
It is cheaper to build, it is cheaper to maintain, and it has
31:12
the biggest bang for its buck. And as a texture followed up to what
31:17
I said earlier, Ben and wasn't the swimming pool the big selling point to
31:19
the public. It was one of the selling points. The idea was that
31:23
we were going to take a space that was dead and we're going to try
31:26
to put people in it. We're going to try to generate revenue off of
31:30
a place that quite frankly, was just growing weeds and crumbling. That was
31:33
the selling point from my perspective. But yes, I wanted to pull I
31:38
definitely wanted to pull and unfortunately it's not going to happen, at least immediately.
31:42
But you're not giving up hope. As you said the beginning of the
31:45
interview been, You're not You're not giving up hope. I don't. And
31:47
it doesn't even have to be in that location. We can have it in
31:48
a different location. I'd prefer it to be there, sure, but look,
31:52
you can't make somebody do what they don't want to do. And they
31:55
thought that they were holding, you know, all the cards, and quite
31:57
frankly, they don't. Shouldn't says the Texas should in the pool revenue had
32:00
been considered before it was promised. No, it was, it was considered.
32:06
It definitely was considered, and at that time and whenever it was we
32:08
announced it, we were looking at about an eighty million dollar project. Now
32:12
if we included the pool, it'd probably be one hundred and twenty million dollar
32:15
project because the prices have gone up or the construction has gone up. But
32:19
no, I studied pools. I even was looking at the cost of pools,
32:23
not just for not just for construction, but also for maintenance and operation,
32:29
the operational side of it. I was looking to studying them all over
32:31
the country. In fact, I looked too that were in Canada. Anything
32:35
that I could get public information on the operational cost of a swimming pool,
32:37
I studied it. So we did look at that, and at that time
32:42
I thought it was much more feasible. Of course, we did have a
32:45
feasibility study that said it's not feasible. That certainly would weigh against it.
32:52
And I can imagine what would happen if we built the swimming pool and it
32:54
wasn't feasible, and then somebody comes and calls on this show or text says
33:00
says, by the way, you more on. You had a study that
33:01
said it wasn't feasible, and yet you did it anyway. And that came
33:04
from Mississilango. Thanks honey, so that you know that happens. But we've
33:09
got a My goal is to keep looking at that because that's I think that
33:14
would definitely improve even if the even if that's not as economically feasible as what
33:20
we had hoped, I still think it's good for the residents. I mean,
33:22
any any park is not economically feasible. I promise you this, every
33:27
single park that you have, And I don't care whether state owned, federal
33:30
owned, or county owned. It loses money. Parks lose money. You
33:34
do not develop parks because you're trying to even break break even or make money.
33:38
You do that for quality of life. And so I get that part
33:42
of it too. So the people that are that are messaging me, and
33:45
there have been a number of them, they understand that too, that this
33:51
is a quality of life an issue, not an not an economic issue.
33:53
But the problem is when we're already doing several incredibly large projects Courthouse Shawnee,
34:01
you know, the one side of the Phase A of Capital Sports Center,
34:05
it's it can be a challenge to take on more and quite frankly, I
34:08
don't like debt. I'm not. The county has zero dollars in debt right
34:12
now, zero and we worked hard to get it that way. Uh So,
34:16
you know, I think I speak for all the commissioners, commission President
34:20
Wheeler and Commissioner slot Nick. We don't want to take on more death than
34:22
we can handle. Sounds good. Gotta leave it, Dereck, Commissioner Slango,
34:27
appreciate you being here. Man, Hey, thanks for mam. Don't
34:29

that. That's all right, but Dave Island Chilling five a live is brought

here. How are you man? Good morning, I'm doing well. How
39:10
are you doing? I'm doing fine. I know the State Democratic Party of
39:15
which you are the head of also Delegate might Pushkin for those who don't know,
39:19
wouldn't be anybody you release a statement condemning the assassination attempts on Donald Trump's
39:24
obviously you and other entities that your thoughts then on Saturday and your thoughts now,
39:30
well, my thoughts have not changed one bit. I mean are you
39:34
know, thoughts and prayers with the former president and his family, especially the
39:39
victims, and this horrible, horrible event, this Pennsylvania former fire chief that
39:47
died, from what I understand, protecting his family, trying to shield his
39:52
family from gunfire from an AR fifteen. You know, all he was doing
39:58
that day was trying to express his you know, his preference, political preferences,
40:05
going to a political rally, something that's very American, go to a
40:07
political rally. And that's all he was doing. And uh and and wound
40:13
up being killed. And of course the other two victims, who I've heard
40:15
are now in more stable condition, and that's that's great. But yeah,
40:20
we expressed condemned the violence, just like every uh, every good American should.
40:25
And again we don't know what the motives were. You know, was
40:28
this guy a Trump hater although he was a registered Republican or was he somebody
40:32
And I kind of harkened back, and you and I are the same age
40:35
to Hinckley that tried to kill Reagan just to impress Jodie Foster. I mean,
40:39
and there are now there is intel coming out that said he had also
40:43
on his phone googled things about President Biden, yet he was looking up to
40:47
both both candidates schedules. Yeah, soar And that's only just what I've speculated,
40:53
speculation. We don't know, nobody knows what the motive could have possibly
40:58
been, but we do know that uh uh, somebody with some extreme mental
41:01
illness got a hold of a high powered rifle and did some real harm,
41:06
been a lot of harm to our country. Been watching much of the r
41:09
n C, the Republican National Convention, bits and pieces about as much as
41:13
I can stomach. Well that's an honest answer. But you think of the
41:16
governor's speech Tuesday night. You know, I was troubled by the last part
41:22
of it, and I think a lot of people were, especially when there's
41:24
been all this talk of dialing down the rhetoric and then the governor has this
41:30
line about you know, we're going to go on. I can't remember exactly
41:32
what he said. I don't know if he could repeat it either, but
41:36
about we're going to you know, become unhinged. I if our guy doesn't
41:40
win, What is that supposed to mean? I already do that. In
41:45
January I had an issue with that too, and delicate Kaylee Young and I
41:49
talked about that yesterday on the show. I just I thought, again,
41:52
I'm a free speech guy, but I think I don't think that that was
41:57
something that probably should have been said in that setup in my opinion. But
42:00
the governor is not one to follow a script or he kind of goes off
42:04
of what he says, and to say the country is going to become I
42:07
mean, there are just as many people that would say that if that,
42:09
if Trump wins, the country's going to come, He's going to become unhinged.
42:14
We don't need that kind of rhetoric. In my opinion. I'm not
42:16
sure what the point of it was or what he really had to gain by
42:20
saying something like, you know, get up there and state your case,
42:22
you know, but you don't have to uh. To me, it almost
42:25
sounded like a threat. I'm not sure if that's how he meant it or
42:28
not. I don't I knows what he said, and it did not come
42:31
off well. You planning on watching tonight when the president make He's been there
42:35
every night, but he actually speaks tonight and officially accepts the nomination, I
42:38
guess, or are you planning on being there now I'm watching it? You
42:40
simply will not be there, but watching it, I'm going to tune inn
42:44
if I can stay up that late. It comes on pretty late for all
42:46
guys like I get up there. I try to get up early. I
42:50
couldn't make I tried to listen to his pick for vice president, J.
42:54
D Vance, Senator Vance, but he got kind of late. I couldn't.
42:59
I couldn't stay awake through his speech. It was. It wasn't the
43:00
most exciting speech. If you want my what do you think? I couldn't
43:04
keep me awake? But I can tell you I don't. I'm very disappointed
43:07
in that selection. To me, it's doubling down on a very far right,
43:13
extreme philosophy. I don't think that's reaching to the middle. I don't
43:16
think that's trying to bring more people into the fold by picking somebody like JD.
43:21
Vance, first of all, as being a lifelong West Virginian Appalachian,
43:27
not an Appalachian like JD Vance claims to be an Appalachian. I find a
43:31
lot of his writings to be very offensive and degrading towards people who live in
43:36
this area. He all, if you're a study of if you're a student
43:40
of West Virginia history, you know we've been often treated really like like a
43:45
like a third world nation. You know, our resources have been stripped away,
43:49
We're left with very little, little to nothing in return. People outside
43:52
of the state have gotten very rich off of our resources, in our in
43:58
our cheap labor here historically, and that has led to some long term problems
44:04
for this state, whether it's poor public health outcomes, the addiction crisis,
44:08
is abject poverty, and it's just a historical fact that the way that this
44:14
state has been treated has led to some really poor outcomes. And if you
44:17
read his book, he likes to blame it squarely on the people here.
44:22
Well, and I believe in personal responsibility too, but you gotta factor in
44:29
these other elements with the complete exploitation of this part of the country to make
44:35
other people rich. And then he gets up there and he delivers this populist
44:38
type speech. Meanwhile, he is backed by hedge fund managers, He is
44:43
backed by people in the tech industry who pump millions and millions of dollars into
44:46
his campaign in twenty two when he first ran for Senate, every politician yeah,
44:54
but the people who back him, like namely has got Peter Tiele.
45:00
That's a very interesting view. I did read some he he doesn't believe women
45:02
should be able to vote, doesn't believe women. I didn't read that bark.
45:07
He has a quote saying that he doesn't believe freedom and democracy can coexist.
45:12
That's that's dangerous to have somebody like that backing you. And of course
45:15
you know Senator Vance has some pretty extreme views himself. He doesn't he's for
45:20
and he has said he is for a nationwide ban on abortion. He and
45:23
Trump differ on that. And now I'm not saying one won't come around to
45:27
the other. Well, try and say all he won, but all he
45:29
wants. But he is the one who appointed these three justices that resulted in
45:34
Roby. There are people I don't know whether you've heard this, Mike,
45:36
and we've got to go to break. I don't know whether you've heard this
45:37
now. There are people within the Republican Party right now, and I have
45:40
one that regularly texts this show, but it's not particularly enamored with Trump right
45:45
now, because he thinks this person he or she that texts the show thinks
45:50
that that Trump has started as some of his ideas have weakened the Republican Party
45:54
platform because he's taken in the text said he thinks Trump's taking it too liberal.
46:00
Wow, Okay, was he publicly saying this? I hold he was
46:02
a text to the show. I don't know, Probably not. I don't
46:05
know. Nobody's publicly nobody Unlike our party, they're not allowed to publicly criticize
46:08
their leader. But hey, that's a problem. That's not Democrat. Hold

dot Com. TEXTA says, ask mister Pushkin who he thinks the Democrat nominee
48:30
for president will be when Biden drops out. I'm not going to answer a
48:34
hypothetical. President Biden won every primary and he has more than ninety percent of
48:39
the of the pledged delegates. I do believe that you know President Biden is
48:45
going to do what he feels is in the best interest of the country.
48:49
And I am not privy to the same kind of data that the President and
48:53
his folks have in regards to polling, So it is definitely not my call.
48:58
But I'm not going to here and answer hypotheticals. There's one person that
49:04
can answer the question over whether or not President Biden is going to stay in
49:08
the race. Hey, President Biden. A pe Pole came out yesterday's said
49:12
three fourths of Democrats think you should step aside. Yep, I saw that.
49:15
So, I mean, I'm seeing the same stories you are about Majority
49:22
Leader Schumer and Minority Leader Jeffries Patam Schiff, Yeah, former Speaker Pelosi having
49:30
these discussions, and I'll tell you right now, great, So I am
49:34
not part of those discussions. I didn't ask you. My job is to
49:37
help elect Democrats here in West Virginia and that's what that's what we plan to
49:40
do. Tex says a Hoppy addressed this yesterday, and I agree with him
49:44
with the tone of justice used when he said we've become unhinged. I took
49:47
him to mean with everything our country has gone through the past four years under
49:51
this administration, with record inflation, gas prices and groceries, the invasion of
49:54
ten million illlegals at the southern border, et cetera. We have truly lost
49:58
our minds if we don't put Trump back in the all the things we've gone
50:01
through, like passing the Infrastructure Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, or the American Rescue Plan
50:07
that has sent a historic amount of moneys down to cities and counties throughout West
50:12
Virginia. UH the Inflation Reduction Act that led to such an announcements like new
50:16
Corps and form Energy Green motors here in Kanac County. All of the stuff
50:22
that we've gone through during the Biden administration that we should be thankful for.
50:24
I know Governor Justice is thankful for He shows up at every photo op and
50:29
ribbon cutting and with the golden shovel and some big scissors to cut ribbons.
50:32
But he never ever expresses that gratitude to President Biden, who actually got the
50:38
legislation pass. It is he has disproportionately helped us here in West Virginia.
50:45
I want I want to I want to talk about the governor as now you
50:49
firmly believed, talk about them, you firmly believe of sor I'm sure that
50:53
that you're behind Glenn elliott A. You know, for one hundred percent,
50:57
I would, and I would I would expect that if Justus win's this race,
51:00
are you are you concerned about his ability to serve? Very I think
51:05
everybody should. You know, there's been a lot of talk about the the
51:07
you know, the fitness of President Biden, about his is he going to
51:10
be able to serve the next four year term? Well, you know,
51:15
Jim Justice is running for a six year term and not had any real serious
51:19
discussion about that. In fact, I tell you what, if if there
51:22
was a foot race between President Biden and Jim Justice, I know who I
51:24
would bet on. I'd been on the president to be distrategy. But does
51:30
anybody really expect Jim Justice, who has been a no show governor for eight
51:36
years? Does anybody really expect him to show up and do the job for
51:39
six years in Washington, d C. Because you can't vote from the Greenbrier.
51:44
You have to actually be there in your seat to vote. In order
51:49
to have West Virginia represented by not one, but two senators, He's going
51:52
to have to show up. And does anybody really expect him to do the
51:55
job because he hasn't done it here in Charleston. A final text. Oh

He is a threat. In fact, just today the Foreign Minister of Russia
52:17
is out singing his praises. Why because he wants to completely cut off funding
52:22
for Ukraine. He wants to hand Ukraine over to Russia. I don't even
