- 0:00Felt like the old, old days. I mean, just they did such a
- 0:04great job with the car and you know, we spoke about trying to
- 0:07do something a little different this time around to try to get
- 0:11better. We've just been kind of stuck in
- 0:13a rut really over the last three years or so. 22, the fall of 22
- 0:20is the last kind of dominant car I thought I had at this
- 0:22racetrack. And you know, so since then,
- 0:26just kind of been hanging around 3rd to 5th and, you know, we
- 0:29were always the next best behind the 12 and and then, you know, a
- 0:32couple hundred cars. And so we came with something
- 0:36different. Just trying to get better and
- 0:38obviously turn back the clock. Jeremy Bianchi, the athletic,
- 0:43you're 44. You're at an age when other
- 0:46drivers, you know who they are. Have they they stopped winning
- 0:49races? I'm curious if over this last
- 0:52year or almost a year, you thought maybe that another win
- 0:55wasn't going to come. No, I mean, I'm, I probably am
- 1:02the king of irrational confidence, but I mean,
- 1:05generally speaking, I, I know that when I've got the car to do
- 1:08it, I can be the best. And so, you know, I haven't, I
- 1:16haven't felt like I've held back the car at any point.
- 1:21And certainly I'm not, you know, immune to understanding that
- 1:26Father Time is undefeated. But I just, you know, everything
- 1:31that I need to be good to be a race car driver is still really
- 1:34sharp. And so I feel like there's just,
- 1:38it hasn't happened yet. It will, but not yet in in that
- 1:43same vein, when you win these races now, do you celebrate
- 1:46differently? Do you think like, you know, I'm
- 1:48not going to have a lot of these opportunities left to to be in
- 1:50Victory Lane, to have these moments with the family, the
- 1:52team, etcetera. Yes, yeah, that that's a big one
- 1:55for sure. And certainly you learn to
- 1:56appreciate them a little bit more.
- 1:59You know, when I don't know, when you're just in your 30s or
- 2:04something and and you got such a long runway ahead of you if
- 2:07you're always thinking about. Yeah, well, we'll go win next
- 2:10week too, and the week after that, week after that.
- 2:11But certainly, you know, however many races I'm going to win
- 2:17between now and the end, I'm going to value them just a
- 2:22little bit more. Just, you know, from
- 2:25perspective, you know, from wisdom that you have and, and
- 2:28understanding, you know, the value of it, how hard it is to
- 2:31do. I don't always have my, you
- 2:33know, kids here. So I think it's been a few years
- 2:36since they were in Victory Lane. So just it's having it all come
- 2:41back at this track, you know where it was 10 years ago, 55
- 2:46where Rusty Wallace got his 55th.
- 2:49It just, you know, I'll have time to let all that stuff
- 2:52digest. But it's in the moment.
- 2:55It's really awesome. I never don't think Rusty ever
- 2:58had a two against the world flag.
- 3:02You had 11 against the world. Is that is that is that fun or
- 3:05is there any part of that like motivation or what?
- 3:09Why? I mean, you have already have
- 3:11enough going on. Why add to it?
- 3:14Why not is the question, Why not?
- 3:18I mean, it's just that's me. I mean, go shoot hoops with me,
- 3:24go play pickleball with me, go play golf with me.
- 3:27If I can't talk, then I it takes away my superpower.
- 3:31It really does. I'm not nearly as good my
- 3:35friends. It drives them absolutely crazy.
- 3:37But to me, that part of it, it fuels me and it and it just
- 3:44makes me feel good. That's it.
- 3:47And some would say off the track, it's 2311 against the
- 3:50world. So I'm curious, does winning
- 3:53amid the lawsuit mean anything and could it mean anything going
- 3:57forward? Just haven't gotten the first
- 3:59one out of the way. It really doesn't mean anything
- 4:02as far as, you know, the the court stuff is concerned.
- 4:05I mean, all that stuff is handled off off track.
- 4:07But it I mean, it feels good, right?
- 4:09I mean, it feels good to, you know, know that, you know, you,
- 4:13you just there's, there's probably like 50 fans that are
- 4:17out there waiting for me to get done with this right, that are
- 4:20going to stick this out. And, you know, maybe those were
- 4:23the only 50 in the in the stands that are rooting for me today.
- 4:26But it's like I do it because of them and I do it because it it
- 4:30fuels me from the inside. And and I love, you know, when
- 4:34someone says I can't do it, going out there and doing it.
- 4:38Johnny be Savage Ventures. I know this is not the first
- 4:41time that you've raced against Bubba for the win, but I was
- 4:44curious from your perspective as a driver owner, what is it like
- 4:48lining up on the front rows leader and having him on your
- 4:50right, restart after restart after restart and just seeing
- 4:54him come back and challenging you over and over?
- 4:57Yeah, I mean, I thought generally speaking, I, I didn't
- 5:01see that kind of speed out of the 23 or the 20 yesterday.
- 5:05And so I thought that I was, you know, and was for the most part
- 5:09kind of racing against, you know, the Hendrick cars, mostly
- 5:13the nine. And you know, I was waiting on
- 5:15the 12th kind of for him to show his face and I I think he got up
- 5:19towards the front. But you know it, it's certainly,
- 5:23I feel like I know what they have.
- 5:26I know what I have and if I have track position and I have my
- 5:30experience around this track, it was going to be extremely
- 5:32difficult for them to get around me at any point of that run.
- 5:37And and I was able to just kind of do what I had to do, like
- 5:41just, you know, keep them, well, close.
- 5:43You know, I'm that guy with the fishing line and not close
- 5:46enough almost, you know, like just let them creep in there.
- 5:49But, you know, knowing that I've got a little more gas left in
- 5:52the tank. And so, yeah, it's great to see,
- 5:57especially that team and, and Bubba, like they're, they're
- 6:00really good right now. I mean really, really good and
- 6:03on the edge of, of winning races.
- 6:05So it's great to see, you know, my always, my perfect scenario
- 6:11is me winning and my team cars to finish 2nd, 3rd, 4th.
- 6:15That'd be the perfect scenario. And you're not it's it's nearly
- 6:18impossible to have. But when you're able to execute
- 6:22a day where we can win and they can be in the top five and
- 6:25contending for a win, that's just like I scripted it up.
- 6:29Davy Siegel was SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
- 6:31One of the first things you said over the radio after you won was
- 6:34Attaboy Chris Gayle. And he spoke at length about,
- 6:38you know, you guys embracing him because he was the only new
- 6:40person on the 11 team and and all those things that come with
- 6:43it. What have you thought about him
- 6:45as a leader now? And, you know, just what do you
- 6:48think that he is capable of as a crew chief working with somebody
- 6:51like yourself for the rest of this year and beyond?
- 6:53Well, I mean, Chris has had a tough go at it.
- 6:55I, you know, I, I like when we didn't have a great weekend.
- 7:00Like social media, people are just out out to get him.
- 7:04And I think that, you know, that he's been the problem for all
- 7:07these years and it's just not the case, you know, So I'm
- 7:12really happy for him because I think, you know, he's had the
- 7:15tough task of having such young drivers his whole career.
- 7:20And that is really hard to do. It's it's hard to put in what,
- 7:25you know, is the fastest thing. And then expecting a rookie to
- 7:29go out there or, or someone that's really young to get the
- 7:31most out of that. And then having the racecraft to
- 7:34manage it through the whole race.
- 7:35It's really, really hard to do. And so I think, you know, him
- 7:39having someone probably as laid back as I am is for the first
- 7:43time in his career is probably making his job a lot, a lot
- 7:47easier. And he mentioned it to me at
- 7:48last week. He was like, you know, it's,
- 7:51this has been the easiest, you know, you're the by far the
- 7:54easiest driver I've had to deal with.
- 7:55So, and I try to do that for him because I, I'd say, you know,
- 7:59I'm never going to second guess your setup, your strategy or
- 8:02anything. All I'm going to do is focus on
- 8:04giving you the best behind the wheel and giving you the best
- 8:08information so you can then go make the right decisions.
- 8:11And whatever you decide, I'm going to have your back 100%.
- 8:14And that's what you have to do. If when you have a new crew
- 8:19chief coming in, there is you got to believe in him and you
- 8:21got to let him be the leader that he is.
- 8:24Kelly Crandall, racer.com First off, Denny, what was the feeling
- 8:27Gabe Hart had today when he leaned in the car pre race and
- 8:29it was the video was posted on Instagram.
- 8:31You called him a liar, I guess he wasn't.
- 8:34Yeah, well, he, he, he says, I don't know.
- 8:39He's been, I don't know what his win percentage is, but he says,
- 8:42you know, when I get these feelings that we're going to be
- 8:47in Victory Lane, I've got that feeling today.
- 8:49And I said, oh, geez, here we go again.
- 8:52Said I've heard this before. I said I don't know what your
- 8:54win percentage is, but I think it's pretty low on your, your
- 8:57feeling. Now they're in the 2019 20 time.
- 9:02Whenever he would say, I got that feeling, I pretty much knew
- 9:06that he had a bullet of a race car they built and we were
- 9:09probably going to win that race that weekend as long as I didn't
- 9:11screw it up. But in the next genera, it's
- 9:13just it's really hard to get that gap.
- 9:16And so I don't know what he saw yesterday, but I, you know, when
- 9:21we finished our debrief after practice, I said, I think we're
- 9:26going to race pretty good tomorrow.
- 9:27And he's like, yeah, I think so too.
- 9:29And, and we at the we did not have the best car.
- 9:32We, we just didn't. But I just had some sort of
- 9:35feeling that, you know, that the direction we were going is the
- 9:39right way. And so he gave me the old, you
- 9:43know, rah rah. I feel good about it today.
- 9:45And and and then I saw Jared there videotaping and I said,
- 9:50you know, like he's a liar because we we never went in And
- 9:53now when he has those feelings, but we did today.
- 9:55The second thing I want to ask was when this win sets in more
- 10:00over the, you know, tonight or or tomorrow, the coming days,
- 10:03will it feel better because it's finally to finally breakthrough
- 10:08again at Martinsville or to because the long wait from Dover
- 10:13last year, which you mentioned a couple weeks ago, had felt like
- 10:16it's been an eternity since that one.
- 10:18It's Martinsville for me because it's so I'm telling you, I
- 10:23scratch my head and I, I study this racetrack more now than I
- 10:27ever have in my career. It was way easier to win, you
- 10:32know, 10 years ago, 12 years ago when it was me, Jimmy and Jeff,
- 10:35it just, I knew it was going to be the three of us.
- 10:38Our cars were good. We had the feeling we just were
- 10:42better than everyone else. And it was easy.
- 10:44I didn't have to put in all the work that I do now, but it just
- 10:47was aggravating to be the next best at this track for the last
- 10:53five years. Like just never having it. the
- 10:58IT is like the ability to control a race, run as fast as
- 11:01you need to to lead the race and pull away when you want.
- 11:04And today we had it. And so it's that's what feels
- 11:09good is knowing that now we've got something that like I'm not
- 11:14going to have to chase my tail in, in the in the fall trying to
- 11:18download and figure out, OK, why am I running third again?
- 11:23Like I, I need to win this race. And so, you know, sure, when you
- 11:27run in the top five, you'll, you'll have some wins fall your
- 11:29way, but I want to dominate. I don't want to, I don't want
- 11:32to, you know, I'll take any win I can get, but I want to have
- 11:35days like this where I'm in complete control.
- 11:38And so it's going to feel good coming here in the in the fall
- 11:43and knowing that like, OK, we've, we don't have to chase
- 11:46our tail. We know we need to to build a
- 11:49race winning car. Stephen stumpfrancher.com
- 11:52Speaking of dominating, you LED 274 the final 275 laps and in
- 11:57between your checkered flag in 2015 to the one here, you LED
- 12:00four 1410 laps here. You know, does dominating, you
- 12:06know, just make it that much sweeter?
- 12:08And just how frustrating was that, you know, dry spell here
- 12:11looking back on it now that you've ended it?
- 12:14Yeah. I mean, I, I somewhat answered
- 12:16it with my last question, but I, I felt all wins are created
- 12:21equal on the stat sheet. Not all wins are created equal
- 12:26in your mentality. You know, when you have a
- 12:28dominating win, it's like, Oh yeah, I, I did everything right,
- 12:34the team did everything right. The pit crew execute perfectly.
- 12:36Like when we are on it's it can be deadly.
- 12:41And and so, you know, if you go in and if you win because the
- 12:46first two took each other out and like your third, like, yeah,
- 12:50you won. And on the stat it counts all
- 12:52the same. But I'm telling you mentally, it
- 12:54doesn't give you that sense of that gratifying win that wins
- 13:00like this do for me. Danny, we've seen you get hot
- 13:04after a win. And we're going to Darlington
- 13:06and Bristol over the next couple weeks.
- 13:09So I'm just curious if it's going this win today is
- 13:12dominating as it was, gives you the pace to do what you did for
- 13:16the next couple weeks. I hope so.
- 13:18I mean, this is, you know, truthfully that the schedule's
- 13:21really nice to me over, you know, over the last month and
- 13:24then kind of the next month, you know, there's some good stuff,
- 13:27good tracks for us. I mean, all of them can be good
- 13:29tracks, but you know, tracks that I've won a lot at got great
- 13:34feels for what I need at that track.
- 13:36And then, you know, yeah, it's I hope this is a start of things
- 13:40to come and, you know, we can build upon it that, you know,
- 13:43it'd be great. But you know, we got about 24
- 13:47hours to celebrate this. And then on the Cincinnati, as
- 13:51they would say, and in the Arrow, where sponsorship is
- 13:56everything, couple races were progressive and you got them
- 13:58their first win and they went bonkers according to folks give.
- 14:02How important is that for the number 11 team to win so early
- 14:05with that? Well, I know it's a big thing
- 14:07for them. You know, a lot of the reason
- 14:09they're on my car is, you know, obviously some things, social
- 14:14media with myself and the team and they know they're going to
- 14:19be upfront. That's that's why they put their
- 14:21name on the on the car is that, you know, by the numbers, the 11
- 14:24car gets seen a lot and it's because it's upfront.
- 14:28And so we're achieving their objectives right now.
- 14:33Lots been made about all the changes that you've been through
- 14:35this offseason with the crew chief change at FedEx leaves.
- 14:38Now you bring in a new sponsor, Progressive, and you have the
- 14:41outside noise of the lawsuit. And also lots been made.
- 14:44All the talk to this weekend was, you know, it's been a
- 14:46decade since he's won a Martinsville and you mentioned
- 14:48when he walked in here, it felt like the old days.
- 14:50How I mean, every Cup 1 is special.
- 14:52You mentioned how special Martinsville is to you, but how
- 14:55good is it to come here, dominate a race and know that
- 14:58even amidst all that, you know, running well here now, winning
- 15:01here is still a constant. No matter, I guess now we can
- 15:04say no matter the area of your career because now you've won
- 15:06here with the next Gen. car and and broken that 10 year drought
- 15:08here. Well, I'm just going to have you
- 15:11touch my hip for the rest of the week because you said it
- 15:12perfectly and you said exactly how I feel it it you know, the,
- 15:17the feeling is fantastic. Life is good right now.
- 15:20I mean, I, I really have no complaints.
- 15:23Things are going well. 2311 is putting themselves in the upper
- 15:29echelon of the big three or whoever you want to say that
- 15:33have dominated the sport for decades.
- 15:35They are running with them and, and, and beating some of them
- 15:39week in week out. So things are good.
- 15:43You know, the five year plans working over there.
- 15:46I still have it over here. Couldn't ask for much more.
- 15:50Got a kid coming in two months so all's well.
- 15:55What can? You say about Bubba's.
- 15:56Progress to get. Two podium finishes back-to-back
- 15:59and. He probably should.
- 16:00Have had four top 10s by now. Yeah, I mean, they're, they're,
- 16:05they're running like the 45 during the summer.
- 16:10So you know, they're, I, I, I, I told you guys that that new crew
- 16:16chief was going to be a game changer over there.
- 16:20He's getting the most out of Bubba And, and I want to give
- 16:22Bubba his due to like, it's not all the crew chief, but you
- 16:25know, Bubba is really stepped up and, and been a leader with the
- 16:29team. He's got a lot of confidence
- 16:31right now, which goes a long, long way.
- 16:34So I think he, he, he doesn't need change anything.
- 16:37Just keep doing what he's doing. He's taking a big step from one
- 16:42season to the next and and now it's like winds are going to
- 16:46fall brighten his lap the way he's running right now.
- 16:48Jacob Steelman race face digital Denny I thought today was going
- 16:53to be the day that we had all four gifts cards in the top ten
- 16:56tie up put together a really good run just didn't pan out
- 17:00because of a spin late. You've been the veteran at JGR
- 17:02and kind of I'm sure I've seen him through this, this tough
- 17:07start to the season. Have you given him any advice
- 17:10or, or what you know, have you seen out of him that may make
- 17:15you think coach was in here and said that he thinks Ty's day is
- 17:19coming soon. What have you seen from him
- 17:20lately that might agree with that?
- 17:23Well, I mean, truthfully, I don't, I don't see a whole lot
- 17:25of them outside a racetrack. But you know, he he asked today
- 17:29what what should he do? How does he turn this thing
- 17:32around? And my, my advice was just,
- 17:35you're not going to get it all back in one week.
- 17:37And you know, that's, that is what I see most young guys try
- 17:42to do is if they make a mistake, they end up compounding it with
- 17:47multiple mistakes over and over and over.
- 17:49And they just can't get out of making mistakes.
- 17:52And it's like at some point you got to just how can I get
- 17:57through the day with a green race?
- 17:59That's not, you know, he got spun today, but it's like, how
- 18:05can I just get through with a decent finish?
- 18:07I don't really want a good finish.
- 18:08You got to get a decent finish build on that.
- 18:13You know, I, I said people are going to run into you today and
- 18:16you got you can't let that stuff get to you.
- 18:18I'm going to get right into, but it's just you, you have to be
- 18:22able to be mentally strong enough to, you know, let that
- 18:27stuff go. And and certainly it's really
- 18:30easy to hit the panic button and say, you know, and things are
- 18:34going as bad as they ever have. Can't can't get through a race
- 18:38without problems. Everybody's out to get me.
- 18:43But it's just you got to just have a quiet week and build on
- 18:49that. And then then after that you
- 18:52let's have a quiet week and finish five spots better like
- 18:55it. You're just not going to get it
- 18:57all back in one week. So you don't chase that.
- 18:59Don't chase 3 wide middle if you don't have to on lap 25.
- 19:04Like these races are really really long. 30% of your
- 19:07competition will take themselves out every single week.
- 19:10If you have a 12th place car, you will finish 8th if as long
- 19:14as you don't screw up because others in front of you will.
- 19:16So just keep that in mind and and I think that if you can, if
- 19:21you can continue to have that type of mentality and not panic,
- 19:26it will eventually turn. Clary Lang, this might be a mere
- 19:29mortal kind of question, but you know, we always thought of you
- 19:31as so Dang good here. And then you started telling us
- 19:35your your information was shared amongst Joe Gibbs Racing, the
- 19:38stuff you knew about this track. Then the car changed and it was
- 19:41like, well, the car is different.
- 19:42So my secrets no longer work for those of us who don't get to see
- 19:47the data, right? I envision the headline being
- 19:49Denny is still good here. And there's so much talk about
- 19:52rhythm. Every driver yesterday talked
- 19:55about rhythm here. Is it the possibility that you
- 19:59are still just going to be able to be good at a track despite
- 20:03the new car, despite the secrets that you had?
- 20:06And you know, it's kind of hard to explain unless you're a
- 20:08driver, but maybe you could help.
- 20:11Yeah, I mean, it's a good point. You know, I've been able to win
- 20:15in many different types of cars and many different types of
- 20:19tires and aero changes and all that stuff.
- 20:22But you know, one thing is constant with this small of a
- 20:26racetrack, the approach that you make to be fast here is still
- 20:29the same. So my dad always used to tell me
- 20:33when we used to race different kinds of cars, he's like, it's
- 20:36just a different machine. Figure out how to make that
- 20:38machine go fast. And I know how to make, I know
- 20:41how to make speed at this track. It's just what do I need to get
- 20:45this next Gen. car to work and operate like I need it to to
- 20:49make the lap time so it's just it's taken a little bit longer
- 20:55yes advantages that you you know whoever finishing the top five
- 21:00is going to be studying our information from now to October
- 21:04and to and they're going to be better because of it.
- 21:06So I have to figure out how to get that little bit more of an
- 21:10edge over the field. And so did I.
- 21:13Was my car perfect today? No, we're there's definitely
- 21:16things that we can do to make better.
- 21:18And I enjoy that process of continuing to get better even on
- 21:21weekends. We went Matt Weaver, of course
- 21:23not. We saw your tweets yesterday.
- 21:26So we have a general idea of how you feel about the Xfinity
- 21:28Series race. But I'm curious now that you had
- 21:30a day to digest on that is, is this a blip of a one off a weird
- 21:35thing that happened on Saturday? Or is there something that we,
- 21:37the collective we need to do to address this so it doesn't
- 21:41happen again? Yeah, I mean, we'll talk about
- 21:44it a little bit tomorrow, but it's yeah, it's certainly I, I
- 21:49think that the sanction body needs to get involved a little
- 21:51bit and, and, you know, step in on egregious things.
- 21:55I think it's, it's continued to ramp up, right?
- 21:57It's, you know, we've seen this stuff and, and it used to only
- 22:02happen on green, white checkers. And then this place it, it
- 22:06seemed like inside 20 to go, people would lose their minds.
- 22:10And then those guys yesterday did it with 50 to go, just
- 22:14absolutely just creaming each other.
- 22:16And so it just was horrible driving by most of the people
- 22:20out there. And you know, it's, it's just
- 22:24not a good look. And certainly you shouldn't be
- 22:28able to just wipe someone out egregiously like what happened
- 22:32at the end of the race yesterday that, you know, certainly we we
- 22:35have a Black Flag for a reason. And and I think we should start
- 22:38using it. David Meadow stall news Danny
- 22:40how does it feel to to win here at your hometown, one of your
- 22:43hometown tracks for one And how hard is it to get your mindset
- 22:47from a local beating a bang short track to the lady in black
- 22:50and Dalton next week carrying the momentum from winning this
- 22:53week hopefully into getting back into vigilante Dalton next week
- 22:56yeah I mean my focus for Darlington won't start till
- 22:59really kind of Tuesday. You know even tonight and
- 23:04tomorrow will be consumed about in my mind of like how I could
- 23:08be better here. I have some ideas to to download
- 23:12with the team on how I can get a little bit better.
- 23:16And so the, the momentum is there, right?
- 23:19It surely when you win, there is momentum.
- 23:22But NASCAR racing does not care about momentum.
- 23:26You can be first one week and last the next week.
- 23:29And that's, you know, that's kind of the beauty of it is
- 23:32those that, you know, the 35 guys that lost today, you know,
- 23:36believe that seven days from now they're going to win.
- 23:38And so it's the great thing about our sport that it's got
- 23:41ebbs and flows like that. But certainly we feel like we're
- 23:44doing a lot of right things and certainly can can contend no
- 23:48matter what the racetrack, especially a track like
- 23:50Darlington.
