- 0:28This is Haley Reitker with the Becker's Payer
- 0:31Podcast. And today, we are recording live at
- 0:33the Becker's third annual spring payer issues roundtable.
- 0:36Today, I am joined by Eric Cannon, who
- 0:39is the chief pharmacy officer at SelectHealth.
- 0:42Hello, Eric. Thank you so much for having
- 0:43this discussion with me today. Can you go
- 0:45ahead and introduce yourself and share a little
- 0:47bit about your background?
- 0:48Yeah. You bet. Thank you, for having me.
- 0:51It's great to be here. I'm a pharmacist
- 0:53by background and training.
- 0:55I've spent,
- 0:56twenty eight years now with SelectHealth
- 0:58and love every minute of it. It's great
- 1:01being part of the Intermountain system and being
- 1:02able to do the right thing for our
- 1:04clients and our patients.
- 1:06Well, thank you so much for that brief
- 1:08introduction.
- 1:08Now to get things started,
- 1:10balancing affordability and quality is a constant challenge
- 1:13for health plans. How is your organization innovating
- 1:16to manage the cost of care while maintaining
- 1:18or improving member outcomes?
- 1:21You know, taking care of our members and
- 1:23ensuring they have access to quality care
- 1:26is our top priority.
- 1:27It's one of our major commitments,
- 1:30and it guides just about everything we do.
- 1:34Our philosophy has always been if if we
- 1:37do the right thing for our patients and
- 1:39our members from a clinical standpoint,
- 1:42the cost will follow or we will see
- 1:44cost efficiency.
- 1:46As the cost of therapies becomes more and
- 1:48more expensive,
- 1:49maintaining that position is becoming more and more
- 1:52difficult.
- 1:53What we know though is we've demonstrated that
- 1:55through quality care,
- 1:58we can improve
- 1:59patient outcomes. We can improve cost. That doesn't
- 2:02always mean we adopt the most expensive or
- 2:04the latest therapy,
- 2:06but what it does mean is we follow
- 2:07the evidence, and that drives great outcomes for
- 2:10our patients.
- 2:11Well, I'd love to dive deeper into that
- 2:13with the quality of care. So in an
- 2:15ever evolving regulatory landscape, what best practices or
- 2:18tools does your organization rely on to keep
- 2:21quality of care at the forefront?
- 2:23You know, twenty seven years ago, we established
- 2:25our own PBM, Scripius,
- 2:27and we did that because
- 2:30we didn't see any what we believe to
- 2:32be ethical options in the market.
- 2:34We built Scripius to provide greater transparency.
- 2:38We share data. We run all our own
- 2:40operations. We own our own contracts.
- 2:43So our clients know exactly what they're going
- 2:45to pay,
- 2:46for a prescription drug.
- 2:48This has given us a solid framework to
- 2:50build the organization
- 2:51on, and it puts us in a situation
- 2:54where we're consistently
- 2:55doing the right thing
- 2:57for our members. I I think as you
- 2:59look at
- 3:00regulation, as that regulatory
- 3:02environment continues to evolve, evolve may not be
- 3:05the right word. It may be forced upon
- 3:07us. Yeah.
- 3:09But many of those changes that we're seeing
- 3:11proposed today,
- 3:13those are things that
- 3:15we already do as an organization. So we
- 3:17continue to work with
- 3:19regulators and legislators
- 3:20as they draft and develop policy.
- 3:24We believe
- 3:25through greater transparency,
- 3:27that's the right way for us to evolve
- 3:29the market and go forward. Thank you so
- 3:31much for sharing. Cost transparency
- 3:33is so, so important, especially in today.
- 3:36I'd like to pivot the conversation a little
- 3:38bit. So net promoter score is a powerful
- 3:41indicator of member loyalty and satisfaction.
- 3:44How are you using NPS to drive meaningful
- 3:46improvements across your health plan?
- 3:50You know, NPS has become
- 3:52such a part of what we do.
- 3:55We're constantly trying to leverage that so that
- 3:59we can enhance and provide a better overall
- 4:02experience for our members.
- 4:04As we've followed Net Promoter Score, one of
- 4:06the things we found is that
- 4:08the single biggest dissatisfier for our members is
- 4:12they don't like being surprised when they get
- 4:15to the pharmacy. And and let me give
- 4:16you a great example.
- 4:18With our Medicare membership,
- 4:20every year, they get a transition fill. Well,
- 4:22when people would get a transition fill, we
- 4:25would send out a typical
- 4:26CMS standard letter to say, you just got
- 4:29a transition fill.
- 4:31But people didn't fully understand that. They didn't
- 4:34know exactly what they were supposed to do.
- 4:36They took the letter to their doctor. The
- 4:38doctor didn't know what they were supposed to
- 4:40do. So we've started following those up with
- 4:43a personal phone call to each one of
- 4:45those members. They were gonna call us anyway.
- 4:47So we reach out to the member. We
- 4:49explain, hey. You just got a transition, Phil.
- 4:51Here's what you need to do. Here are
- 4:53the different options,
- 4:55and here's the process, and we're happy to
- 4:57help you walk through that.
- 4:59Had we not been focused on
- 5:01NPS,
- 5:03we would not have really had that opportunity
- 5:05to improve that single process for those Medicare
- 5:08members.
- 5:09Alright. And finally, looking ahead, what do you
- 5:12see as the biggest opportunity for payers to
- 5:14lead the charge in transforming care delivery and
- 5:16driving better outcomes for all stakeholders? And how
- 5:19can leaders take a step in this direction
- 5:20now?
- 5:22Pushing for greater transparency within the various
- 5:25facets of health care, I think,
- 5:28remains one of those essential opportunities.
- 5:32The more we can increase visibility
- 5:35into costs and policies
- 5:37and decision making processes, stakeholders
- 5:40can come together
- 5:42and facilitate
- 5:43a more equitable and informed environment for all
- 5:47of us to take care of the patients.
- 5:49As we take steps in those directions, I
- 5:51think as leaders,
- 5:53we need to be fostering collaboration, and and
- 5:55that's fostering collaboration with people maybe we haven't
- 5:58typically
- 5:59interacted with. That's sitting down with the administrators
- 6:03of the hospitals and really looking at billing
- 6:06practices. And how do we make sure patients
- 6:07go to the optimal side of care and
- 6:10not the cheapest side of care?
- 6:12How do we work together on all of
- 6:14that? I think as we continue to increase
- 6:17that level of transparency, we continue to demystify
- 6:20health care, and we make it better for
- 6:22everybody.
- 6:23Well, Eric, thank you so much for joining
- 6:25me today. Again, this is Haley Recker with
- 6:27the Becker's Payer Podcast recorded live at the
- 6:30Becker's third annual spring payer issuers roundtable. Eric,
- 6:33have a great rest of your day. Hey.
- 6:35Thank you.
