- 0:53pick up your copy of Slime Incorporated. It's my first full length mystery novel,
- 0:58and really I endeavor in that book to book write a book that honors
- 1:03the traditions of so many great detective stories while still telling a very modern story.
- 1:11You can pick it up as a paperback or as an e book,
- 1:14including for the kindle on the Eye Bookstore and for the Nook, or through
- 1:18smash words dot com. Well, now it's time for today's episode of the
- 1:23Adventures of Philip Marlowe, where there's a will. When the will was read,
- 1:27everybody's figured she'd been crazy when she wrote it, and that included me.
- 1:33But I changed my mind after spending a night on an island with a
- 1:36pig, a cat, and an ape, because in reality they were people
- 1:42from the pen of Raven Chandler, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his
- 1:46most famous character as CBS presents the Adventures of Philippio and Now, with Gerald
- 2:04Moore startist Philip Marlowe, we bring you tonight's n usual story where there's a
- 2:08will. I had spent the whole day on a noisy job which had concerned
- 2:25itself with a lot of people who talked a lot and said nothing. When
- 2:30I finally locked up my office for the night, I was born out.
- 2:34As I drove slowly along the street, I was glad to be heading for
- 2:36home, a little peace and quiet, at least that's what I thought.
- 2:40But when I pulled up for a full stop sign only half a block from
- 2:44my apartment, something happened which brought my little dream of peace and choiet to
- 2:47an end. A car door opposite me flew open, and something mighty excited
- 2:52jumped in. I'm drive on, please along, no, please drive on?
- 2:55Okay, lady, get a good grip on the upholstery. Had ought
- 3:10to do it. Now, what's it say? You look a little pale
- 3:16and beautiful. I'm always pale when my heart's in my mouth. Now,
- 3:21why don't you swallow once? Take a deep breath, and tell me who
- 3:23is after you. There isn't much to tell. Who's a nasty little man,
- 3:25That's all I know. So thanks for making like Barnie Oldfield and good
- 3:30night. Hey, hey, not so fast. It's impolite to hitch and
- 3:32run. Look, mister, right now, I'm up to my earrings in
- 3:36trouble and that leaves very little time for small talk with strangers, even nice
- 3:39ones. But in that case the name is Philip Mallow, which takes care
- 3:43of the stranger part. And I'm a private detective, which makes trouble my
- 3:45business. Where do we go from there? No place? Three hundred thousand
- 3:49dollars worth of pidden bonds, a screwy old lady and a sculptor with a
- 3:52red beard, or too much for any one man police force, mister Mallow,
- 3:55So again, good night. Before I could say anything, she was
- 3:59out, and it was only the heavy scent of taboo in the air and
- 4:09the memory of a gorgeous profile with jet black hair and pale blue eyes.
- 4:15I sighed like a schoolboy and decided to put her under the heading of things
- 4:18that pass in the night. But I couldn't why, out of all the
- 4:24cars in Los Angeles, should she have picked on mine well. The next
- 4:28morning, as I was walking down the car to to my office door,
- 4:30I was still seeing pale blue eyes. Maybe that's why I didn't notice the
- 4:34man who waited outside my door until I was almost on top of him.
- 4:39He was well dressed in about thirty five. He looked like a man who
- 4:42had forgotten how to smile. Mallow right, I want to compliment you on
- 4:46your behavior last night, mister Marlow. Barbara told me about it. Oh,
- 4:50come on in, mister Shields, Edward Shields, would you be interested
- 4:56in aiding three people in the search for more than a quarter of a million
- 4:59dollars in the negotiable bonds, one percent of which will be yours if the
- 5:01bombs are found. Being a fairly fast man with figures, yes, yes,
- 5:05I was splendid. I'd like to view details. Well, mister Morlow,
- 5:11my aunt Bernice Mayhew Shaw died, leaving her entire fortune to charity.
- 5:15With the exception of the bonds I mentioned, Those are to be divided equally
- 5:18among three of us, the soul heirs, if we find them within twenty
- 5:24four hours. Hmm, that sounds like something you dream about after a midnight
- 5:28snack of pizza. In pigs knuckles, perhaps, but you didn't know my
- 5:30aunt. Beside myself, the beneficiaries are Barbara Haynes, the girl you met
- 5:35last night. She was and Bernice's personal secretary. And another nephew, Harlan
- 5:41Crane, who at the moment happens to be a sculptor, happens to be
- 5:46six months ago he was a sailor before that a writer without even a rejection
- 5:50slip to his name. My cousin is irresponsible, impetuous, and completely self
- 5:56in the world self, mister Shields, what are the exact conditions? At
- 6:00precisely noon today? The three of us are to meet with Luther Willard and
- 6:03my beloved aunt's lawyer, who will give us each a large sheet of tissue
- 6:08paper covered with specific markings. Individually, the sheets mean absolutely nothing, but
- 6:14combined one over the other, the transparent sheets form a coherent map to the
- 6:17location of the bond. But why all the intrigue. My dear departed aunt
- 6:23had a peculiar sense of humor. In addition to this, she was never
- 6:27particularly fond of any of us. She was sure that our individual shortcomings would
- 6:31make cooperation among us impossible, even for so short a period. As twenty
- 6:35four hours and the fact that a man followed Miss Haynes last night convince you
- 6:39that there was something too there. Convince me no, he may have been
- 6:43nothing but a personature. Nevertheless, I do feel that to play safe for
- 6:46fourth party, a custodian of the map, so to speak, would be
- 6:50advised that that's fine. When do I go to work mister Shields at noon
- 6:54at the lawyer's office. However, I regret the first you must be approved
- 6:59by the third heir. I don't like to ask us, mister Marlow,
- 7:02but would you mind very much calling on my cousin Alan personally? Not at
- 7:08all. As a matter of fact, I think he might prove very interesting.
- 7:11Yes, I am sure he will as interesting as an eighth in the
- 7:15zoo. I felt like saying, look, Shields and not as gullible as
- 7:27I look. But then I thought a client's a client, and I decided
- 7:30to play along. Holland Crane, six foot red bearded giant, talked as
- 7:34he worked, wielding a ten pounds sculptor's mallet like it was an eighteenth century
- 7:40quill. I Frank Marrow one hears and everything to me and never has been
- 7:46over one hundred thousand dollars will buy a lot of marble. Has the state
- 7:48of Amada, I'd say, But tell me the point, mister Crane.
- 7:51Do I get your seal of approval? Oh? I imagine you'll be all
- 7:56right. Anyone who can get buy Shields the all Americans screwge ought to do.
- 8:01Thanks a million. Not being personal where you're concerned, it's just a
- 8:05matter of facing a fact bluntly. Edward Shields is conniving, avaricious, and
- 8:11doll I hardly recommend him to nobody. And the girl Barbara feel the same
- 8:16way about her, Oh I don't. And the truth of the murder Marlow
- 8:22is that I know very little about Barbara Haynes. What I do know I
- 8:26like very much that I can understand. Well, do you realize that once
- 8:31you have the whole map in your possession, you're worth an awful lot of
- 8:35money? Of course I do the whole map. I have a market value
- 8:37of exactly three hundred thousand dollars. That's right for her, three hundred thousand
- 8:43dollars, dead or alive. I know it was small of me, but
- 8:54I didn't exactly see the joke. And things got less funny as time went
- 8:56on later as me in my trio get off the elevator. At the lawyer's
- 9:01office, Old Luther Willard and Bernice's attorney was waiting for us, so excited
- 9:05he could hardly talk. I've been held up for a little man. He
- 9:11wanted the mass. Yes, yes, he had a scar on the side
- 9:15of his neck. How are the maps all right? The maps? Yes,
- 9:18yes, they're all right. Wait a minute, Wait a minute,
- 9:20everybody give them a chance, mister Willard. Tell us exactly what happened.
- 9:22And this is mister Marlow. We told you about him, mister Willard,
- 9:26of course, yes, yes, you can't come into my office. You
- 9:30see, I was putting some papers into my safe when this little man stepped
- 9:33up behind me and demanded the maps. Were they in the same No,
- 9:35no, thank heavens, or make yourselves comfortable. The maps, mister Willard,
- 9:39Where are they now? Cossure? Right here where they were all the
- 9:43time, here under the bludder on my disk. Clever of me, wasn't
- 9:48it back seals still intact? I'll take all three of them right now,
- 9:52mister Willard. That is, if there are no objections, all right,
- 9:56then I guess we can be on our way. L mister Morlow, there
- 9:58are still two things you people must know. First, in the event the
- 10:01bonds are not recovered within the twenty four hours, I am instructed to open
- 10:05another sealed envelope, which I am happy to report is kept in my bank
- 10:09Volde. That envelope contains a complete and simplified map and is to be turned
- 10:15over to a designated charity. And Second, if any of you die before
- 10:20the allotted time is up, the bonds are to be divided among the surviving
- 10:24persons. And if none of us survives, mister Willard, why in that
- 10:28case the bonds again go to charity. You see, Harland, your aunt
- 10:33was a very generous woman. After arranging the meet with the three airs at
- 10:43Shield's place, later that afternoon, I headed for the Nice and Public Public
- 10:46Library, where I figured i'd be able to examine the maps in safety.
- 10:52By placing the three maps exactly one over the other, I saw that the
- 10:56bonds were hidden on the larger of two squares of land Old Twin Islands,
- 11:01which was a personal property of the late Bernice made Sure and located in Indian
- 11:05Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. Because I left the library with the three
- 11:09maps in my pocket eye. I felt like a well fed mallard on the
- 11:13opening day of hunting season. Then I knew I was being called. As
- 11:18I slipped into a doorway and turned, I saw it was the nasty little
- 11:22man with a sky all right, you through playing town? Yes, shorting,
- 11:28I tell you talk loud and clear. No, don't hit me,
- 11:31please please hurt me down, I'll top, I'll drive you. Everything all
- 11:33right if you're sure you can get it all straight the first time there the
- 11:39whole story beginning, middle and end. Yeah, yeah, like you say,
- 11:43whole story okay, starts through time. I figured out that it had
- 12:01been the sot off end of a broomstick that had slammed my stomach up against
- 12:05my backbone. The little man was out of side. Then another five minutes
- 12:09went by before I quit calling myself sucker, and I started to think straight.
- 12:15Nearest public locker was in the Santa Fe Trailways bus depot and Kuenda.
- 12:18I went up there and deposited two thirds of the map for safe keeping until
- 12:22we were ready to leave for Indian Lake, and I found a telephone and
- 12:26a half a dozen calls later, I knew that a caretaker named Jumbo was
- 12:31the sole inhabitant of Twin Islands, and my last call was to him.
- 12:35I wanted some kind of a well locoming committee ready for us. When I
- 12:39left the phone booth, it was only one o'clock, so I returned to
- 12:43my apartment, where I figured i'd rest until three, when we were all
- 12:46to meet at Shield's place. But that was my second mistake, because the
- 12:52moment I closed my apartment door, I was positive I wasn't going to get
- 12:54much rest. I had an unannounced visitor. Hey, you look surprised,
- 13:01mister Marlow. I am. I didn't recognize you at first without your broomstick.
- 13:05I traded that in on this twenty two target pistol here. It's more
- 13:09expensive, but it's better. Makes me as big as you are, maybe
- 13:13bigger. Yeah, but how much does it do for your personality? Quite
- 13:16a bit gives me poise, and poise gives me manners. So in asking
- 13:22for that nap in your pocket, I'll eave him say please, come on,
- 13:26Milo. I won't say please twice. No, I don't think you
- 13:28would here. Thank you. Now, before I go, one more thing.
- 13:37The hall outside here is straightening error right to the stairs, and that
- 13:39makes it fine for shooting, so after I step out, don't do anything
- 13:45rash for a while. So loving life as I do, I didn't do
- 13:54anything rash for a while. In fact, I could have whipped up a
- 13:58nice seven minute frosting be where I moved it all and I phoned the three
- 14:01Airs to get together at my apartment. When I finally had them all seated
- 14:05in front of me, I related the saga the little Man, including my
- 14:11premonition that one of the three present was signing his paychecks. Of course,
- 14:15I got nothing but QP doll innocence out of any of them. So after
- 14:18adding that we'd get under way just as soon as the missing one third of
- 14:22the map was returned to me, I threw my trench coat of my arm
- 14:24and told them I was going for a walk. But before leaving them,
- 14:28I reminded them that whoever was behind the little Man could fire him, because
- 14:33I would never have kept all three maps in one place anyway unless all of
- 14:37the Airs were on hand to watch one another. Then I left. I
- 14:43hadn't walked more than a half a block up Franklin when I stopped at the
- 14:46sound of Barbara running after me. Phil I'm scared. Harlan and Shields were
- 14:50acting like a couple of wild men, calling each other every name under the
- 14:54tongue. What do you expect? Chit chat about the weather quite acting like
- 14:58a Bobby's sock, so within squealing distance of I'm not for and try a
- 15:00cigarette. It'll come here. What does it feel? Are you smiling like
- 15:05that? What's wrong? Nothing's wrong, Barbara and nothing. It's just that
- 15:09I found this in the pocket of my trench coat when I went for my
- 15:11cigarettes. It's the math that's right, the missing third. It's back already.
- 15:22When that missing third part of the map turned up so fast, I
- 15:24figured the Airs had decided to play ball, but I made a mental note
- 15:30to keep my eyes on them anyway. At three o'clock I went to Edward
- 15:33shields hillside house in Laurel Canyon for the scheduled meeting. Shields wasn't home yet,
- 15:39but cousin Holland was there admiring the view. Barbara showed up a few
- 15:43minutes later in a convertible. Shields arrived last by cad. It finally began
- 15:48to look as though we might actually start out all together. Well, I
- 15:52see we all arrived safe and yeah, disappointed only by your clumsy attempts at
- 15:58humor. Holly, stop it, boys, let's get started. Phil.
- 16:02If you looked at the map, where are we going? Indian Lake.
- 16:03It's a four hour drive, so if you're already, I suggest we get
- 16:07started very well. I'll go up to the garage and get the car.
- 16:08So I Anpernice hid the buns in a roost to Twin Islands. Well well,
- 16:15well, nobody seemed surprised that the location at Bernice had chosen to hide
- 16:22her bonds and Holland Barbara and I stood on the front porch watching Shields as
- 16:26he climbed the very steep driveway to his garage in the car. But Barbara
- 16:30got more of my attention than Shoels. She made a mighty dreamy picture,
- 16:37and she leaned casually back against the rail of the porch. She wasn't aware
- 16:41that I was watching her, and I suddenly I saw her go tense,
- 16:44her eyes filled with fear, and I quickly turned to follow us stare shields
- 16:48car was going at a rapid cliff down the steep driveway. I still couldn't
- 16:51figure out Barbara's concern, and then she started screaming. The car was headed
- 16:53to the edge of a cliff. The tree, the tree. Stop him,
- 17:03Shields. Are you hurt? No? No one all right? Hit
- 17:06the brakes. I tried to stop. He had and hit that tree.
- 17:08You've gone over the edge. Just have a look at those break, Shields.
- 17:12Well, no, wonder what is it? Brake lines broke and every
- 17:17drop of fluid drained out. I might have been killed. No, might
- 17:18have bought it, Shields. We stood there for a while, looking at
- 17:26one another, but nothing was said. Brake lines rarely snap accidentally. And
- 17:30I remember that Hollan had been a Shields's house early and the car had been
- 17:34in the garage, and Barbara I had to admit that she actually had anticipated
- 17:41the car going out of control. Well, the twenty four hours for finding
- 17:45the bonds were slipping by, and I knew we had to get to Indian
- 17:48Lake. We held a short power without passing the peace pipe. We decided
- 17:52to take Barbara's car. We picked up the rest of the map, which
- 17:56I checked at the bus station, and we shoved off. Four hour drive
- 18:00that was about as relaxing as the thought of an overdue time bomb in a
- 18:03day nursery. We finally pulled up to the shores of Indian Lake. Jambo,
- 18:08the caretaker, was waiting at the dock. He knew how to handle
- 18:11a boat, and a few minutes later we could see twin islands. We
- 18:15headed for the smaller of the two, where I could make out a rambling
- 18:18lodge. The other island, a quarter of a mile away, seemed deserted.
- 18:22Shields was the first one to shore up here. Barbara, let me
- 18:26help you run along, boy, I'll help Barbara, thanks, Darling.
- 18:30Well, Malo, what now? Well, first we go up to the
- 18:33house. Oh, Jambo, you got everything ready for us, Hey Jambo,
- 18:37h oh oh sure, sure, everything to ready? Mister Mala.
- 18:41It's like you said, I open four of the upstairs rooms. Open the
- 18:42rooms. We're not going to sleep out here? Are we gonna try?
- 18:47But this isn't a vacation. We're here to find the bonds and get out.
- 18:49You realize it's almost nine already. That leaves us just fifteen hours.
- 18:53Mallow. Yeah, I know. I got a good watch, and I
- 18:55counted twenty four and I'm also giving orders to shred hi handed Marlow employee,
- 19:00wasn't That's all. Let's get the map together and start looking for those bonds
- 19:03right now, Take it easy, big man. The bonds are hidden on
- 19:07the other isle, and the map is his tangles, a second hand spider
- 19:08web. You wouldn't get anything at all done in the dock lot. New
- 19:12people hired me to help you find those bonds. If I have to get
- 19:15nasty to make it take orders, I can do that too. Let's play
- 19:19like we're smart and go up to the lodge and relax, all right,
- 19:22Marlon, but remember we'd better have those bonds by tomorrow or someone else will
- 19:27be nasty, very nasty, and I mean me want you two. Getting
- 19:38the three airs settled down at dinner table was quite a sure. And when
- 19:42I was sure they'd keep an eye on each other, I slipped outside.
- 19:47I hid one third of the map in a drain pipe, and I went
- 19:49upstairs to my room and I hit another third in the window shade. Now
- 19:53the maps were settled, and I began to think about other things, like
- 19:56like the accident the Shields car. There were too many accidents and coincidences to
- 20:03suit me, so I decided to drop in on cousin Holland's room to see
- 20:07what I could see. After fifteen fruitless minutes, I was about to leave
- 20:11when something in the wastebasket caught my eye, the corner of a half hidden
- 20:17handkerchief monogrammed h C. I had just picked it up when I saw Jumbo
- 20:23standing in the open door. A handkerchief there in your hand? That blood
- 20:29on it. No, it looks more like break fluid, and in this
- 20:33case it's practically the same thing. Huh. I think we'll leave it right
- 20:37here in the wastebasket, Jumbo, No, did you want something? There's
- 20:41one to say up in my own place out back if you want me.
- 20:44Okay, you know where mister Shields is. He's out in the veranda alone.
- 20:48Yeah, thanks, Johmbo. If I need anything, I'll call him.
- 20:51Good night, Shields. How about you, model? I'm wrong?
- 21:02Sounded like a man expecting trouble. It was nearly killed in my car this
- 21:04afternoon, and I don't think that was the end of it. Yeah,
- 21:07and don't stand too close to high windows. Thank you. It's comforting to
- 21:11know that I am not alone in my suspicion. Maybe. Uh, how
- 21:15are you betting I'm the beauty or the beast? Don't be absurd. I
- 21:18hope someday to marry Barbara. Yeah, the guy might be beating her time
- 21:22right now with a sculptor's mallet. You may be naive, mister Marlowe,
- 21:26but Barbara isn't. I saw them just a moment ago walking down to the
- 21:30boat house. Harlan's galloping after her like a half baked idiot as usual.
- 21:34But if miss Hayes prefers me, what can he do about it? There
- 21:41was an answer for that, but it seemed a little obvious under the circumstances.
- 21:45A few minutes later, Shields went inside, and I made a bee
- 21:48line for the boat house to water down a certain hot headed sculptor named Harland.
- 21:53When I got with an earshot, I knew I'd be as welcome as
- 21:56hooping car for the glass Flower's convention. So I stopped and listen. Barbara
- 22:00Dulan falling in love with you. You know that. Don't you let me
- 22:04hold you close? Oh this is real, Barbara. For the first time
- 22:11in my life, I'm truly in love. I want to do things for
- 22:15you, make you happy. Please wait, I'm not completely free. There
- 22:19are still ties with Edwards. You know that fat, stingy babbit. He's
- 22:26no man for you, wife. He so much as touches you from now
- 22:29on up. Wait a minute, Barbara Marlow, you cheap snooping trapping some
- 22:36minor ice compared to some of the shenanigans going on around here. What do
- 22:40you mean by that? Words are the wiser sufficient you. I'll give a
- 22:42few more. Somebody is trying to cut our little triangle down to two sides
- 22:47before noon tomorrow. What I've seen so far I don't like. So I'm
- 22:49warning every d what are you accusing? Melun stop it. Don't be a
- 22:52fool, you cave men. Control yourselves until those bonds are found. Come
- 22:57on, Hala, let's go in. Good night, Marlow. Don't get
- 23:02your head caught in any trends. And deciding sleep wouldn't be very healthy for
- 23:11a man in my position, I decided to sit up that night, and
- 23:15it was about two o'clock when I look out the window and saw something mighty
- 23:18interesting. A light was moving on the other island opposite us. I got
- 23:23hold of jump over there as fast as we could. Yeah, here we'll
- 23:36beach. It's light, said ahead with to Marlow. Looks to me like
- 23:40it's up on the picnic shelder. Yeah, I'll see you, lady.
- 23:42Johnbo who's there? Yes? Who? Oh, Marlow, I didn't hear
- 23:52you come up winds you strong. I guess I'm glad to see you spooky
- 23:56here all along? Oh sure, sure, what's the idea I do a
- 24:00little freelance prospecting. Yeah, that's right, Bernise May you love this spot.
- 24:03And I had a hunch she hid the bonds here on the base of
- 24:06his table. Oh, I guess I was wrong. Oh, come on,
- 24:10Marlow, limber up. You can't blame me for trying. Listen,
- 24:12beautiful, don't flap your eyelashes at me. I can't see anything with double
- 24:15crosses right now? All right, if you've had your fine, let's go
- 24:18back to the lodge. Will be that way, Phil, Phil. The
- 24:22sun will be coming up in two or three hours. Why not wait for
- 24:27it here with me, Barbara, Baby, don't burn up too many calories
- 24:33with that routine, because I only keep one third of the map on me.
- 24:37You think yourself smart, bright ideas hatching that cute little brain of yours
- 24:40too. Now let's you. Oh comes the gun with a pearl handle,
- 24:44no less, stay away from me, Marlow over there, Hey, what's
- 24:47going on here? Ready, Shambo? Look on Jombo stepped into the light
- 24:53and Barbara turned. I made a swipe at her gun hand that knocked pistol
- 24:57person lamp all over the picnic shoulder. I found the gun and gave it
- 25:00the Jumbo. Then I started to pick up an assortment of kickknacks that had
- 25:03spilled out of a purse, but I never finished because one of the items
- 25:07made my eyes pop. It was the monogramed handkerchief covered with brake fluid that
- 25:11I had found in Holland's room. Ah, it all made sense now.
- 25:18It tied up everything that I suspected, right along only two of my tree.
- 25:22I would plan to split up the three hundred thousand dollars worth of bonds
- 25:25from the first. As I ran for the motor launch, I yelled a
- 25:27jambo to bring Bober over in the rowboat. All the way back, I
- 25:30had the panicky feeling that I was probably too late. But when I sneaked
- 25:34in the front door of the lodge, there were still two voices, and
- 25:37they came from the open kitchen door. My hand on my gun, I
- 25:41edged along the wall and peeked in. Steals your fool, perhaps, but
- 25:44I'm going to kill you and have a perfect case of self defense. What
- 25:47are you talking about? You're hopelessly framed, cousin, Harland. I ruined
- 25:51the brakes on my own car. I planted your handkerchief stained with brake fluid
- 25:53in your room. Marlow found it. He's convinced that you tried to kill
- 25:56me. He's also convinced that he was brought into this old thing by coincidence.
- 26:02He doesn't know that he was deliberately involved in our search for the bonds,
- 26:04just so he'd make a reputable ess. You're out of your mind,
- 26:07not at all. I'm going to kill you and say it was self defense.
- 26:11Marlow will testify that you tried to kill me before. What Marlow's gonna
- 26:14do is blow your head off if you don't drop that gun. Shields Marlow,
- 26:18Yeah, Marlow, who knows he wasn't brought into this thing by coincidence?
- 26:21But it stuck around to see the fireworks and almost saw them. Just
- 26:22now, Well, what's happened, Barbara? Couldn't you hold marlom on the
- 26:26Upper Island shields? Barbara's little mistake was that she should have gotten rid of
- 26:30Holland's hankerchief after she took it out of his room. So he wouldn't say
- 26:33it. Barbara, I don't understand you. You planned all this with shields
- 26:38against me. I did in the beginning, Harland, I changed my mind
- 26:44when hell in love with you. I let Marlow find the handkerchief in my
- 26:47perof I wanted him to stop. Edward. Oh, jo Helen, don't
- 26:49you I'm on, miss Blankhead. Cut the dramatics. It shows over.
- 26:52Let's have it straight. Huh, All right, we might as well if
- 26:56we're going to find those bonds before it's too late. Edward and I did
- 27:00plan it. We even hired the little man who tried to get the maps
- 27:03from you. And when that didn't work, you're planning to get rid of
- 27:04Holland and split the three hundred grand. So we failed. So what we're
- 27:08right back where we started, one hundred thousand apiece. Let's go find those
- 27:11bonds. That's so fast, beautiful. What happened to Holland just now was
- 27:15a little more serious than a hot foot. It was attempted murder. He
- 27:18can slap you two in the jug this minute if he wants to, but
- 27:22I'll leave it up to him. Okay, Holland, what do you say?
- 27:26It's your move? No, I've got a better idea. Marlo went
- 27:32to that map is mind, give it to me. Okay, there it
- 27:37is, Hallan, What are you going to do, Harland? No,
- 27:42don't burn it there? How we all lose now none of us will get
- 27:48the bonds. That's probably how Anpernice wanted it. Anyway, it was almost
- 28:08noon. I was standing on the veranda of the lodge and a scrony old
- 28:11crow was perched up on the roof. I saw Barbara and Shields quietly pull
- 28:17away in a boat with Jumbo, and I saw Howland lumbering off to the
- 28:19far end of the island to soak. And as I watched the three of
- 28:23them, couldn't help thinking a pig in a pin striped suit, an ape
- 28:27with a red beard, and an alley cat in nylon. Keep laughing at
- 28:36BERNICI, you were right. Greed, treachery and rashness don't mix, even
- 28:40for twenty four hours. And the one percent of the bonds I was to
- 28:44get, that's my contribution to charity. Who knows, maybe I can take
- 28:48it off my income. Text The Adventures of Philip Barlow, created by Raymond

- 30:59see how well this and new human nature. I don't know if I would
- 31:03term her as generous even giving all this money to charity, because it says
- 31:10no matter what sort of financial generosity she had, she had a pretty bad
- 31:15nasty streak well, particularly with setting up the opportunity where they could get more
- 31:23money by killing each other. There's definitely a lesson here for private detectives that
- 31:29they need to ask for retainers. He should have been suspicious that the ants
- 31:34beliefs about the trio may have had some truth in it, and he might
- 31:41not have been able to solve it. As it is, he wasted about
