Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to a Murders to Music snapshot.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: 10 minutes of something fun, entertaining, or just something that I want to get off my chest.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: On this week's snapshot, this last week, episode number 139, we had Mr.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: David Jarvis on.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: And if you listen to that episode, you know that he's a military man.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: He was a British soldier, 22 years in the military, kicked out, and only to find that he had a life-altering medical condition.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: And it's not the medical condition, but it's the purpose and the gold medal that he won following that.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: The next four minutes of your life is going to be when he was speaking to the Scottish Parliament in 2025.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: And uh I just want you to listen to him.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: He's a great motivational speaker.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: If you haven't listened to episode 139 last week, listen to it because uh I think it will give you great insight on how the significance of the goal must match the scale of the challenge ahead of you.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: And then next week, episode 141, is going to be his military story.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: What happened in the military?
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: What did he do?
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: What why did he get kicked out?
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: And uh what happened after the fact?
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: What about that transition from military to civilian world?
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Lessons can be learned, yet another turning point in life.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad to have him back on, but give the next four minutes a great listen.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: You guys, peace out, love you.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Thanks for supporting the show.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Good afternoon.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: The first item of business is time for reflection, and our time for reflection leader today is David Jarvis speaking SBC.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Presiding officer, members of parliament, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Three years ago, I faced one of my biggest challenges, a medical discharge for the British Army.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Multiple injuries, PTSD, and the life I'd known for over two decades, gone.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: I was in a dark place mentally.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: A year later, thanks to an array of veterans' charities, I was heading for the Invictus Games.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: I had purpose again, direction.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: And the training wasn't just about sport, it was about recovery.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Three months before the Games, however, I became seriously ill.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: My body, which I thought I knew well, had suddenly become unpredictable.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: I lost over a quarter of my body weight inside two weeks.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Turned out I was almost days from death, only days from death.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: The doctors diagnosed me with type 1 diabetes.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: I was recommended to consider quitting, to accept that the dream was over.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: It felt like the world was against me at every turn.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: But then I had an epiphany.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: If the challenges wouldn't stop, then I would need unwavering focus.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Which meant the target could no longer be about recovery.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Because and the epiphany, the significance of the goal must match the scale of the challenge.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: So it was go big or stay at home.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Gold or nothing.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: You see, I needed that target to keep me focused because I was learning about this new life-threatening condition through trial and error.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And let me tell you, it was mostly error.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Over 40 blood tests a day, countless insulin injections, days when my blood glucose levels just crashed without reason or cause, leaving me shaking and struggling to stand, let alone train.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Nights lying awake with anxiety and questioning my own sanity.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: When I arrived in Germany for the Invictus Games in September of 2023, I'd learned enough to bring it all together.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And I stood on that podium with a gold medal around my neck, not because the road got easier, but because I refused to step off it.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Here's the thing: resilience is not glamorous.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: It is not a motivational poster.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: It's showing up when quitting feels easier.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Stepping forward when the world pushes you back.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I learned through my challenges an important truth.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: The world does not get easier.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: I have to get better at dealing with it.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: I could have relied more on doctors, on my teammates, my coaches, I could have relied more on my family.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: I, we, could delegate can delegate responsibility.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: But accountability is where the buck stops.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And in my case, it had set up residence in the form of type 1 diabetes.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: I know I wasn't responsible for my diagnosis, but I am accountable for how I respond to it.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: I'm not responsible for every single mistake, but I am accountable for applying every lesson learned.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: My accountability is important because the challenges will just keep coming.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: There is no respite.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Every day is still a school day.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: The world can still feel relentless.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: But my focus remains resolute.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Your adversity may be very different from mine.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: But remember, you don't need perfect conditions to achieve something extraordinary.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: You just need the courage to be accountable by owning the outcome regardless of circumstances.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Because resilience is not about avoiding the storm, it's about pushing through, despite the challenges, and you will come at a winner on the other side.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
