- 1:42Speaker 1: if you could know one thing about um, like if
- 1:46Speaker 1: you had one question about my time up at our
- 1:50Speaker 1: fish shack, Like, what's the thing you're most dying to know? Like,
- 1:53Speaker 1: if you could ask me one thing about it? What
- 1:55Speaker 1: would you ask me? Mm hmm, I'm on this spot here.
- 2:00Speaker 1: He didn't give me any earlier. Your first question, Your
- 2:04Speaker 1: first question was was there a lot of bears around? Yeah?
- 2:08Speaker 1: And you know when I asked you that I was
- 2:10Speaker 1: actually asking more just general if you guys are out about,
- 2:14Speaker 1: you know, fishing, when you've seen a lot of bears.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But you answered, yes, there's a shipload. And then you
- 2:19Speaker 1: went into tell me about the stories about how they
- 2:21Speaker 1: were crawling underneath the shock to come towards you as
- 2:25Speaker 1: your flame fish beating off like beating off bears with
- 2:29Speaker 1: a stick, well, beating them off with rocks and slingshots
- 2:33Speaker 1: black bears. But it sounds like nothing got so aggressive
- 2:36Speaker 1: that they actually like charred nothing aggressive or pop their
- 2:39Speaker 1: teeth at nothing aggressive, just being like, uh, you fellas
- 2:45Speaker 1: are cleaning fish. That's very interesting to me, I don't
- 2:49Speaker 1: care that you're standing there. I think I'll come and
- 2:52Speaker 1: have some like a like a dog, like a stray dog.
- 3:01Speaker 1: You know that someone fed even though we didn't feed
- 3:04Speaker 1: him all the time, all times a day. It was
- 3:08Speaker 1: funny too. It's really hot. Like we've got our place
- 3:11Speaker 1: for fourteen fifteen years, and we've always had enough water
- 3:15Speaker 1: in the creek to fill our pen stock. You know,
- 3:17Speaker 1: like we divert water a couple d feet above our shack.
- 3:22Speaker 1: We divert water out of a creek into a tank,
- 3:25Speaker 1: right and then we run a holes off that. It
- 3:27Speaker 1: gives you water pressure in fourteen years. Um, never a problem.
- 3:33Speaker 1: That creek is too dry right now to uh, too
- 3:38Speaker 1: dry right now to pull water. While was I talking
- 3:39Speaker 1: about that, Oh so damn hot and dry, and uh
- 3:44Speaker 1: it was funny because like when you're bear hunting in
- 3:47Speaker 1: the spring and you get like eighty degree day it's
- 3:50Speaker 1: just blazing sun. You feel like not gonna happen, like moso,
- 3:53Speaker 1: take a nap. They're only gonna pop out like at
- 3:57Speaker 1: they're just out black hide, black hair. I wander around
- 4:04Speaker 1: in that heat and the seat waves coming off their
- 4:07Speaker 1: back man in the sun out feeding on beach ry
- 4:13Speaker 1: or walking around, you know, checking out the generator shed,
- 4:19Speaker 1: sniffing around, just around like stray dogs. Yeah, and it
- 4:23Speaker 1: would make me nervous because I know that they're you know, adults,
- 4:28Speaker 1: I don't care, but having my two little kids too,
- 4:30Speaker 1: my little kids up there, and my little kids are
- 4:31Speaker 1: always digging around the creek and they're not looking at
- 4:33Speaker 1: what they're doing. They're just looking for sculpions and these
- 4:36Speaker 1: little eels. And bear takes a body out of Ron Bay.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It's kind of like, yeah, whatever, he's good to know him.
- 4:42Speaker 1: You know, he had a good run. But a young
- 4:45Speaker 1: child like that, it was maybe nervous because it's like
- 4:47Speaker 1: not being able to anticipate what they're gonna how they
- 4:50Speaker 1: might perceive a child, you know, what they think of
- 4:54Speaker 1: when they see a child. Well, it's funny too, is
- 4:57Speaker 1: watching the deer with little fawns. You know, spawns still
- 5:02Speaker 1: got some spots on them, feeding twenty thirty yards from
- 5:05Speaker 1: those bears. It's like those bears out there, I think
- 5:09Speaker 1: they have so much food normally that they're not like
- 5:13Speaker 1: normal bears. They're not as opportunistic as normal bears. It's
- 5:17Speaker 1: like Rocky Mountain bears and so much food in the
- 5:20Speaker 1: form of all the muscles and just everything that lives
- 5:24Speaker 1: at the edge of the marine fish, shellfish and beach
- 5:26Speaker 1: ry It's like you watch them just walking down the beach.
- 5:30Speaker 1: They just flip over rocks and pick up all the
- 5:32Speaker 1: crabs that come out, and then they got lush expanses
- 5:35Speaker 1: of beach rye that's always there, it never dries up.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And then they got the salmon runs. So it's like
- 5:40Speaker 1: a bear. I think he sees something that a normal
- 5:43Speaker 1: bear would be all over, and uh, they don't do it.
- 5:48Speaker 1: And right now is when the salmon runs start. So
- 5:50Speaker 1: I think a lot of those bears are down. You know,
- 5:53Speaker 1: we have a run in our creek right silvers and panks,
- 5:57Speaker 1: well the creek next to us, and I think now
- 5:59Speaker 1: they're down waiting for it to happen. That hasn't happened yet,
- 6:03Speaker 1: but they're lurking around the area and you start cleaning
- 6:06Speaker 1: fish and there used to be in all um you've
- 6:10Speaker 1: seen them up there fighting for the premier spots. Oh,
- 6:14Speaker 1: it's some of the wildest ship I've ever seen. Um.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I'm trying to think darker. Was it dark the first
- 6:20Speaker 1: time we were there? And that was all that commotion.
- 6:22Speaker 1: We started shining lights and realized there was like four bears.
- 6:26Speaker 1: This creek is you know, it would take you three
- 6:28Speaker 1: strides and you're across it, you know, but there's one
- 6:30Speaker 1: major pool that holds all these pinks. Before they get
- 6:32Speaker 1: into the lake, they're backed up by a beaver dam. Yeah,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and uh yeah, we could hear the splash in and
- 6:38Speaker 1: we kind of shining a light down there. I don't
- 6:40Speaker 1: know why we were filming or something. O're there after dark,
- 6:42Speaker 1: and uh, you could see a bear. And then finally
- 6:45Speaker 1: we got closer and looked and will sure another is
- 6:47Speaker 1: like one bear in the water and three bears on
- 6:49Speaker 1: the bank kind of like waiting their turn to you know,
- 6:51Speaker 1: get in and get their own sand to get them
- 6:54Speaker 1: out from the hole. In another place, there's a there's
- 6:56Speaker 1: another creek we fished sam and at and they get
- 7:00Speaker 1: competitive over the shallow So you have like the estuary
- 7:05Speaker 1: which floods in the ebb of the tides, but there's
- 7:08Speaker 1: this one shallow gravel like kind of your first riffle,
- 7:14Speaker 1: and so it's all those fresh fish and it's the
- 7:16Speaker 1: first place, the first obstacle where they got to come
- 7:19Speaker 1: out and have their back out of the water and
- 7:21Speaker 1: scurry into the next hole and they sit there and
- 7:24Speaker 1: fight and take turns and have skirmishes over who gets
- 7:27Speaker 1: to stand in that riffle. But yeah, they don't, do
- 7:31Speaker 1: you know. I don't know. I don't I don't know
- 7:33Speaker 1: if they never have growled, snapped or teeth. But we
- 7:37Speaker 1: saw that one clack in his teeth one time and
- 7:39Speaker 1: there at us. I was with you, well, dirt or
- 7:44Speaker 1: someone was in there. Oh he was there in there
- 7:48Speaker 1: by himself. Yeah, it was clacking his teeth at him. Whatnot. Um,
- 7:52Speaker 1: So that's your main question you'd have for me. My
- 7:55Speaker 1: next question, We're gonna have to pause for a second.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I didn't want to ask it. And many of times
- 8:02Speaker 1: you talked about where it is, but I'll tell you
- 8:05Speaker 1: in greater details. Okay, we're back on good. So where
- 8:08Speaker 1: is a fish camp. It's on Prince of Wales Island,
- 8:12Speaker 1: which is a big gass island. Yeah it's Um, I
- 8:17Speaker 1: never like totally fact checked this, but it's half the size.
- 8:22Speaker 1: I think it's half the size of the big island
- 8:25Speaker 1: in Hawaii. So it's half the square miles of Hawaii
- 8:30Speaker 1: but has twice the shoreline. Wow, it's a mess. Like
- 8:35Speaker 1: a lot of the places you can't tell if you're
- 8:37Speaker 1: on the main island around a little island, you know
- 8:39Speaker 1: what I mean. Just lots of little pipas and fjords
- 8:42Speaker 1: and inlets and little islands and yeah, and so you
- 8:45Speaker 1: said you had pinks and silver's right by your place.
- 8:50Speaker 1: So all the creeks around us like in ours sort
- 8:52Speaker 1: of our zone, which is basically what you can hit
- 8:55Speaker 1: in the skiff without killing yourself, is like one too.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I don't know seven eight creeks, and they all have
- 9:03Speaker 1: some variation on Pink's chums silvers. And then there's one
- 9:09Speaker 1: that has steel head in the spring. We've never messed
- 9:11Speaker 1: with them. No king runs there though, you get there's
- 9:14Speaker 1: kings in the area all the time, resident kings, but
- 9:17Speaker 1: they're not running our rivers, okay. And then we could
- 9:21Speaker 1: get after hell of it pretty hard, and a host
- 9:24Speaker 1: of other not quite incidentals, but things that will target.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Can you still fish crab down? There is everything dungeons yeah, yeah,
- 9:35Speaker 1: dungeoness is good. And shrimping is very good. We shrimp
- 9:38Speaker 1: a lot. We always have shrimp pots out. The crab
- 9:40Speaker 1: fish is so good that Steve would be like, oh,
- 9:42Speaker 1: I think we've had enough. I'm like, bro, you must
- 9:44Speaker 1: have eaten too many crabs in your day, because I say,
- 9:47Speaker 1: load up, let's keep going. Yeah, take up a lot
- 9:50Speaker 1: of space. Though. The thing with like flying home with crabs,
- 9:53Speaker 1: Like you feel a fish box full of crab and
- 9:56Speaker 1: it's just like, yeah, it's like either fly home the knuckles,
- 9:59Speaker 1: which we'll do, or um, you pick it right. So
- 10:04Speaker 1: this time we had someone who I didn't even go
- 10:07Speaker 1: on there. I didn't I didn't go on the crab run,
- 10:09Speaker 1: but they went on a crab run and got some
- 10:10Speaker 1: crab and picked at all. So I brought home a
- 10:13Speaker 1: couple of little back bags full of pick crab and
- 10:16Speaker 1: then octopus and c cucumber. We'll die for that. We
- 10:24Speaker 1: just we dove. Oh you know what's crazy? This last
- 10:26Speaker 1: thing I want to say about this, then we'll talk
- 10:27Speaker 1: about what we're gonna talk about this is this is
- 10:30Speaker 1: the kind of the trippiest I've ever seen it. Really,
- 10:32Speaker 1: my kids got PTSD from it. So we're out. My
- 10:37Speaker 1: buddy dam Bulgan is driving our skill and I got
- 10:41Speaker 1: my two little kids in there damn again. His wife's
- 10:45Speaker 1: in there, Luisa, and me and my brother Matt are
- 10:49Speaker 1: out and it was a negative low tide, so like
- 10:52Speaker 1: the negative one low tide. And we were going out
- 10:55Speaker 1: to pick c cucumbers and look for rock scallops. And
- 11:00Speaker 1: there's this little islet, like this little teeny island out
- 11:02Speaker 1: in this big this big like that. There's this this
- 11:07Speaker 1: the mouth of a large arm that comes off this
- 11:10Speaker 1: very large bay, and there's a little islet out in
- 11:13Speaker 1: the middle of this thing, kind of isolated, and look
- 11:15Speaker 1: for the scallops. You want to try to find places
- 11:17Speaker 1: that are pretty our wave batter and there's a lot
- 11:20Speaker 1: of movement of the water there. So we pull up
- 11:24Speaker 1: and jump out there and start nosing around looking for
- 11:29Speaker 1: cucumbers and scallops. And Austin I hear screaming from the
- 11:35Speaker 1: boat and he's two knows three killer whales my kids
- 11:39Speaker 1: call him or because that's like the PC thing to
- 11:41Speaker 1: call it killer whales. Three killer whales are on my
- 11:46Speaker 1: brother checking them out like thinking he's a seal. Oh,
- 11:52Speaker 1: he's in the water, in the water in a wet suit.
- 11:55Speaker 1: And they passed in front of the boat and came
- 11:58Speaker 1: up and turned away at when they are eight feet
- 12:00Speaker 1: away from his fins. He never knew they were there.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I could hear people screaming from the boat and I
- 12:06Speaker 1: look up and it's just dorsal fins. I can see
- 12:08Speaker 1: Matt snarkle in his back and behind him is just
- 12:12Speaker 1: dorsal fins scared the ship. I mean, my daughter's crying.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I want to go back to the cabin. And even
- 12:22Speaker 1: when we were flying, you know, even when we flew
- 12:24Speaker 1: out of there, um, you know, you get it on
- 12:26Speaker 1: a floatplane. Even when we flew out of there, she
- 12:29Speaker 1: was still looking down asking if those whales are down,
- 12:33Speaker 1: they're gonna bother us. Even over up the plane. Man,
- 12:35Speaker 1: it was just and that never saw no, it wasn't
- 12:42Speaker 1: aware of there. He was just like, you know, the
- 12:44Speaker 1: visibility is not great. You can it's like wavy look
- 12:48Speaker 1: in the art direction and they just tuned in on
- 12:51Speaker 1: the noise of us in the water. But just you know,
- 12:56Speaker 1: check him out, checking out, see if he's a seal
- 12:58Speaker 1: or whatever. Dude, I feel the sealing didn't didn't you know?
- 13:01Speaker 1: I feel for your kids because we're just in those
- 13:03Speaker 1: two skiffs. Was it two years ago in the fall,
- 13:07Speaker 1: we're rolling out going deer hunting, and we see him
- 13:09Speaker 1: off in the distance, so we just you know, cut
- 13:11Speaker 1: the engines and roll up on them, and they happened
- 13:14Speaker 1: to be just kind of coming towards us, and I
- 13:15Speaker 1: mean they cut our bow by ten to you know,
- 13:19Speaker 1: the closest one there was probably five or six being
- 13:22Speaker 1: that close to those animals and just knowing the things
- 13:25Speaker 1: that are packing into my head growing up about you know,
- 13:28Speaker 1: in air quotes, the killer whale, Like it got my
- 13:31Speaker 1: heart racing for sure, Like that's a giant, giant thing
- 13:35Speaker 1: that you know, everyone has seen some sort of clip
- 13:38Speaker 1: or video of it mess with people, right. I thought
- 13:42Speaker 1: about not getting back in the water, but then I
- 13:44Speaker 1: was like that was like, is that the kind of
- 13:46Speaker 1: person I really want to be? And so I forced myself.
- 13:49Speaker 1: We stayed together because we had hit this rock and
- 13:51Speaker 1: we each we're gonna go one way and meat on
- 13:53Speaker 1: the other side of this island, and we decided to
- 13:56Speaker 1: do it a side by side, whatever protection that gives you.
- 13:59Speaker 1: But thought about not getting the water and I'm like,
- 14:01Speaker 1: I'm not really gonna live my life this way, and
- 14:03Speaker 1: then got back in there and just was not enjoying myself.
- 14:07Speaker 1: That's not enjoying myself. Oh yeah, but we picked it.
- 14:14Speaker 1: We picked a big pile of cues clean them all up.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Then how do you cook those c cucumbers? You cut
- 14:22Speaker 1: the ends off. You know what they look like, right, yea,
- 14:25Speaker 1: you cut the ends off. Then you take a knife
- 14:29Speaker 1: and open it, so you're like s batally cutting the
- 14:32Speaker 1: ends off making a cylinder, right, And then you're opening
- 14:35Speaker 1: the cylinder up and you flatten it out, and then
- 14:37Speaker 1: take a party knife, and there's five big clams. Get
- 14:40Speaker 1: all the guts out first, Yeah, there's watery guts, or
- 14:42Speaker 1: they'll expel their gut too. When they're nerves. They can
- 14:45Speaker 1: expel their gut and regenerate. But so you open them
- 14:50Speaker 1: up and take a party knife and grab it with
- 14:53Speaker 1: a pair of fish cleaning players like catfish skinning players,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and take that party knife and just scrape those five
- 15:01Speaker 1: big clam strips off in a swipe. Then just cook
- 15:05Speaker 1: him up like clams or what's better than clam? Really
- 15:10Speaker 1: arguably better than clam strips. And one cucumber yields one
- 15:15Speaker 1: c cucumber yields more meat than anything this side of
- 15:19Speaker 1: a gooey duck. And you could there's no limit on him.
- 15:27Speaker 1: There's no close season, no limit on no one's out there.
- 15:29Speaker 1: There's commercial guys that do it for the export markets.
- 15:31Speaker 1: But it's not like Joe Blow. American is not out
- 15:34Speaker 1: picking sea cucumbers. And all the time I lived in Alaska,
- 15:38Speaker 1: I never sat down to a scumber cucumber telling you
- 15:41Speaker 1: what they eat. When you're gonna start everyone that everyone
- 15:44Speaker 1: is like, once you see what's inside, was like no
- 15:46Speaker 1: ship and then people would get real interested in them.
- 15:48Speaker 1: But we were up there for years before it occurred
- 15:50Speaker 1: to us. I'm at an emergency room doctor from California
- 15:56Speaker 1: who's got a shock. It might as well be a
- 15:58Speaker 1: million miles away from my place because he can't don't
- 16:00Speaker 1: get there in a skiff, but he's got a shack
- 16:01Speaker 1: not far from our shack, and he goes out there
- 16:04Speaker 1: in his primary purpose when he's up there is diving abaloney.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Depends on who he's with. Only a resident can pick Abaloni's.
- 16:13Speaker 1: But he got bodies up there's Abalonei's scalped cucumbers. You
- 16:17Speaker 1: can die for crab. That's what he does. He has
- 16:20Speaker 1: it for that purpose, and I was like, really eat those,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and then we went out and started getting them. A
- 16:25Speaker 1: nomin true believer. You just gotta get over the way
- 16:28Speaker 1: that it looks, you know, I could do that. It's
- 16:33Speaker 1: like octopus, I'll cook you some up man, now that
- 16:35Speaker 1: we're neighbors or now that we live in the same town. Yeah,
- 16:39Speaker 1: starting in one week, I'll pick you something. Oh who
- 16:42Speaker 1: I'm talking to is uh Kurt Roscoe, who's been on
- 16:45Speaker 1: the show before long ago. Thanks for having me. Devoted
- 16:50Speaker 1: listeners will know because we did um what do we
- 16:53Speaker 1: call that episode the Impossible Hunt? I think so, yeah
- 16:57Speaker 1: about Kurt's exploits keep break down just throughing and people
- 17:00Speaker 1: can break down the unlimited the unlimited sheep hunts. Um. Yeah, yeah,
- 17:06Speaker 1: I know. We had a lot more facts and figures
- 17:08Speaker 1: and when we talked about it. Yeah, it's like basically
- 17:10Speaker 1: how it goes. Basically, go out of your one around
- 17:13Speaker 1: and don't get to see anything. Yeah, anybody can be
- 17:17Speaker 1: a sheep. Yeah, yeah, that's exactly it. Yeah. There are
- 17:19Speaker 1: several districts and in the state of Montana and uh
- 17:24Speaker 1: they're all in the same general area, and they have
- 17:26Speaker 1: a limit in each unit, but unlimited people can put
- 17:31Speaker 1: in for those tags and can buy those tags. So
- 17:35Speaker 1: you know, it's one of the few places where anybody
- 17:37Speaker 1: from anywhere can just buy a sheep tag and go
- 17:40Speaker 1: sheep hunting. As a matter of fact, I'm not aware
- 17:42Speaker 1: of another place that you can do that. Um. So
- 17:45Speaker 1: you know, nonresident, nonresident alien doesn't matter. And so what
- 17:49Speaker 1: they do is they typically open it up on September
- 17:53Speaker 1: and it will be open till the end of rifle season,
- 17:56Speaker 1: which is typically you know, the third week and November,
- 18:01Speaker 1: and it's open for any weapon, rifle or archery. And
- 18:06Speaker 1: once the limit is once the quota I should say
- 18:10Speaker 1: is met in each unit, then it closes. So most
- 18:14Speaker 1: of the units hovering around between two and three sheep.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I think most of them are at two this year.
- 18:19Speaker 1: And you know it's as simple as that. That just
- 18:23Speaker 1: gives an opportunity to anybody wants to go. And sometimes
- 18:25Speaker 1: the quote never gets met. Yeah, yeah, so you know
- 18:29Speaker 1: historically we had a little bit more of these facts before,
- 18:32Speaker 1: but about half of the units don't close on a
- 18:36Speaker 1: given year. Um. And you know, but there's also a
- 18:40Speaker 1: buffer on each side. So once the quotas met, it
- 18:43Speaker 1: will close in uh usually forty eight hours, and so
- 18:47Speaker 1: sometimes in a unit, one extra ram will be taken
- 18:50Speaker 1: during that. But you know, generally speaking, it's you know,
- 18:54Speaker 1: from those units you're looking price six eight cheap in
- 18:57Speaker 1: a year total. I gotta follow ups. I don't think
- 19:01Speaker 1: we hit this last time we chatted with you. But
- 19:03Speaker 1: any idea how many are killed with archery equipment? Not
- 19:07Speaker 1: very many? Um do you even know anybody that's that?
- 19:11Speaker 1: I do? I do. UM. I know of I know
- 19:17Speaker 1: second hand of a guy who shot one just a
- 19:20Speaker 1: couple of years ago, um, out of out of one
- 19:23Speaker 1: of the units. Uh, it wasn't the bear Tooth units. Um.
- 19:27Speaker 1: And then um there is I I do know of
- 19:32Speaker 1: one other guy that shot one UM in the Barretooth's unit.
- 19:35Speaker 1: That's the only one that I know of personally that
- 19:38Speaker 1: was shot in the bar Tooth. But that was back
- 19:40Speaker 1: in the late sixties. And um, yeah, it was quite
- 19:45Speaker 1: a feat, quite a feat. You have you ever been
- 19:49Speaker 1: tempted to try with bo No? No, not at all. No,
- 19:53Speaker 1: I I don't know. There there's you know, there's so
- 19:56Speaker 1: many challenges when you go into something like that. I
- 19:58Speaker 1: just don't feel that it need that extra level at
- 20:01Speaker 1: this point. I'm with you. Yeah, yeah, and you've done
- 20:05Speaker 1: it successfully once once. Yeah, and you're going seven years ago, right,
- 20:09Speaker 1: seven years ago? Yeah, well technically eight, I guess, but yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 1: there's a seven year weight so you did it successfully
- 20:16Speaker 1: seven years ago and you had to wait that long,
- 20:18Speaker 1: and now you can try again. And you're going for
- 20:19Speaker 1: fifteen days by yourself this year. Yeah, yeah, fourteen or
- 20:23Speaker 1: fifteen days, Yeah, somewhere around there. Yeah, I guess here's
- 20:27Speaker 1: a segue. So we're gonna talk about how to look,
- 20:30Speaker 1: how to pack in a in a like, Yeah, basically,
- 20:32Speaker 1: how to pack, how to pack and approach deep kind
- 20:35Speaker 1: of wilderness hunting situations. Um. And you're going for that
- 20:39Speaker 1: many days, fourteen or fifteen days, and you won't you
- 20:43Speaker 1: won't go back to your truck at all. No, No,
- 20:45Speaker 1: I'm not planning on it. Um. Yeah, No, I mean
- 20:50Speaker 1: that's that's what I'm packing to do. That's what I
- 20:52Speaker 1: did last time. How many pounds will you have? I
- 20:56Speaker 1: don't know what the total will be? Um, I was yeah,
- 21:00Speaker 1: I was just I'm starting to get all my stuff
- 21:02Speaker 1: together right now. And so you know, my my pack
- 21:06Speaker 1: weights right about twenty six pounds before food. So you
- 21:10Speaker 1: know that that's that's all of your standard gear, your
- 21:12Speaker 1: camp gear, glass tripod doesn't include a rifle. Um. And
- 21:18Speaker 1: then you know, I'm I'm hovering between one point two
- 21:22Speaker 1: and one point four pounds of food today. So you know,
- 21:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna be north of twenty pounds on food and um,
- 21:30Speaker 1: so you know for that amount of time you're going
- 21:33Speaker 1: to Yeah, you're gonna be in that fifty pound range,
- 21:37Speaker 1: which I would be happy with that many days. Yeah,
- 21:40Speaker 1: that sounds extremely light, extremely light. Yeah, like you're fore
- 21:44Speaker 1: going a lot of loot. Well, yeah, you know, maybe
- 21:51Speaker 1: some of you. I mean you're not taking a pillow,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and you're not taking camp shoes, you're not taking some
- 21:55Speaker 1: of the creature comforts that maybe you're are nice to
- 21:58Speaker 1: have with you know, when you're within a day of
- 22:00Speaker 1: the truck or you know what el cunting is a
- 22:02Speaker 1: little bit different because you know you're going to be
- 22:04Speaker 1: making more than one trip out. So you know when
- 22:08Speaker 1: I'm well, I don't understand how's that like, what's what's
- 22:11Speaker 1: they have to do with how much you want to
- 22:12Speaker 1: carry in? Well, if you if you already know, you
- 22:15Speaker 1: know with an ELK that I'm going to have multiple
- 22:17Speaker 1: trips out taking a little bit of extra gear and
- 22:20Speaker 1: you know on each if you have three trips out,
- 22:23Speaker 1: then you want to take an extra five pounds on
- 22:25Speaker 1: each one to go in a little bit heavier. Is
- 22:28Speaker 1: all right, Oh, I get what you're saying. But when
- 22:30Speaker 1: you're coming out and you're trying to come out in
- 22:32Speaker 1: one load with a sheet by yourself, by yourself, yeah,
- 22:37Speaker 1: there's some limitations because there you're adding pounds. Yeah, yeah,
- 22:41Speaker 1: you know it's uh, um, it doesn't end up quite
- 22:45Speaker 1: being that, but it is. It is pretty heavy in
- 22:47Speaker 1: Montana because the eggs you have to take you can't
- 22:51Speaker 1: keep out the head. You can't cap the skull. You
- 22:53Speaker 1: have to take you know, the whole head and cape
- 22:55Speaker 1: and take the head of cape out on the head. Yeah,
- 22:59Speaker 1: you knowing. And it's said it dictates exactly where you
- 23:02Speaker 1: can sever the skull from the spine. Yeah. Yeah, I
- 23:07Speaker 1: would have to look at that again, but it it
- 23:09Speaker 1: it says, you know, well the last time it did,
- 23:13Speaker 1: Yeah did yet you know you can take it right
- 23:15Speaker 1: behind the head, right at the right at the base
- 23:17Speaker 1: of the spine and um, yeah, but everything else has
- 23:21Speaker 1: stay intact. Interesting, you mentioned camp shoes. Yeah. Um, my
- 23:27Speaker 1: brother when he's hunting doll sheet in Alaska, he likes
- 23:30Speaker 1: to bring uh he's al He's always messed around with
- 23:33Speaker 1: different footwear things. Where for while he's doing plastic boots,
- 23:38Speaker 1: was he off that because last time we hunted with
- 23:40Speaker 1: and he was that was his first year in plastics. Well,
- 23:43Speaker 1: I think he's not running plastics now. He liked plastics
- 23:47Speaker 1: because he could cross creeks and take the ends to
- 23:49Speaker 1: take the piece out. The man squeaky sounds of bitches.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I hunted with him in those plastic things. Yeah, they
- 23:55Speaker 1: can be. He likes like plastic boots. You can understand.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Man is like a you know, to the listener, like
- 24:02Speaker 1: some areas, hunting dolls sheep is just it's just rock.
- 24:07Speaker 1: It's just rock. There's not any there's no trail, there's
- 24:10Speaker 1: no trail at all. Everything's off trail. You know, everything's
- 24:14Speaker 1: off trail. Everything's rock. There's no sort of like sweet
- 24:18Speaker 1: kind of walking places. So it's not that much of
- 24:21Speaker 1: a detriment to run plastic boots. But he is big
- 24:24Speaker 1: on having his boots and a pair of sneakers. Yeah,
- 24:29Speaker 1: and then I got me a pair of those down booties,
- 24:32Speaker 1: those down camp booties. Oh my god, it those nice
- 24:34Speaker 1: to have. But like this year, hunting doll sheep and
- 24:38Speaker 1: not even a month, two weeks, two weeks by the
- 24:42Speaker 1: time he listened to this, will probably be in the field.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I won't. I won't be bringing my down my special
- 24:48Speaker 1: down booties. So did they have souls on the bottom
- 24:51Speaker 1: so you can get out and walk around? No, you
- 24:53Speaker 1: can't really get out and walk around. They got Yeah,
- 24:54Speaker 1: they got a soul on the bottom. But man, we're
- 24:57Speaker 1: going to the latrine that night. It's so nice. They'll
- 25:01Speaker 1: take them damn boots off. It is, but you'll just
- 25:04Speaker 1: be running boots. No extra footwear. No, huh no, I don't.
- 25:07Speaker 1: But I use plastic boots too, so you know you
- 25:10Speaker 1: have the inn So you wear plastics. Hunting down here
- 25:13Speaker 1: a lot? Yeah, who's plastic boots? I wear Scarpas. Yeah,
- 25:18Speaker 1: I wear the Scarpo Omega's they quit making them, which
- 25:22Speaker 1: was a total bummer, but I wrapped hold a couple
- 25:25Speaker 1: of pairs and but they're They're one of those things
- 25:29Speaker 1: that I've I've suggested them to several friends that have
- 25:32Speaker 1: gone on cheap hunts, and you know, it's it's it's
- 25:35Speaker 1: a fifty fifty whether or not they fix. You're not
- 25:37Speaker 1: going to break them in. You know. It's not like
- 25:39Speaker 1: a leather boot where you just wear it more than
- 25:40Speaker 1: it's gonna fit. And especially the Scarpo Omega's that they're
- 25:45Speaker 1: a real dense liner, so there isn't much to move around,
- 25:50Speaker 1: you know, to to form to your foot, so they
- 25:52Speaker 1: don't look like, yeah they are, they are, but you
- 25:56Speaker 1: know they're real light. They never get wet, um, I
- 26:00Speaker 1: don't get blisters in them. There's still the most comfortable
- 26:03Speaker 1: boots that I have, so I wear them a lot.
- 26:06Speaker 1: When you do finally hit the trail though, and you've
- 26:09Speaker 1: got like just five miles of trail to rip, don't
- 26:12Speaker 1: it almost I know, yeah, it feels so awkward because
- 26:16Speaker 1: you're kind of like, you know, because you don't bring
- 26:19Speaker 1: crampons down here to you um typically no, uh, you know,
- 26:24Speaker 1: it kind of depends on on some of the you know,
- 26:27Speaker 1: some of the area, or it depends on if there's
- 26:30Speaker 1: snow or ice on the ground. But you know, some
- 26:33Speaker 1: of the some of the smaller crampons I have. I
- 26:36Speaker 1: have a pair of crampons that I have cut down
- 26:38Speaker 1: there are only three quarter inches tall, you know, kind
- 26:41Speaker 1: of like the I'm not going to broounce it, right,
- 26:44Speaker 1: but cattla kinda there you go. You know, they make
- 26:48Speaker 1: the slip on base type. Those are really nice when
- 26:53Speaker 1: it's slick and you know, more from a state safety
- 26:56Speaker 1: standpoint than anything. But you don't depend you know there
- 27:02Speaker 1: there's still you know, especially on a sheep hunt, you know,
- 27:05Speaker 1: something down and in the bar Tooth there's there's a
- 27:08Speaker 1: lot of steep, nasty country in there, and it's it's
- 27:12Speaker 1: nice to have a little bit more foot protection. Yeah. Man,
- 27:14Speaker 1: every year. I remember a couple of years a gonna
- 27:16Speaker 1: last you guys died falling mountain go hunt. Yeah, there's
- 27:19Speaker 1: just not that many guys mountain go hunt. No, No,
- 27:22Speaker 1: you know, especially in those places that have big exposure.
- 27:25Speaker 1: It's not necessarily that you're climbing vertical ice or that
- 27:28Speaker 1: you you know, you really need them. You're just trying
- 27:30Speaker 1: to protect yourself from slipping and and there's a lot
- 27:33Speaker 1: of times, especially in September, you can get yourself into
- 27:35Speaker 1: a place when it's dry and all of a sudden
- 27:37Speaker 1: there's a skiff of snow and it can be flat
- 27:39Speaker 1: treacherous trying to get out. So um yeah, just kind
- 27:43Speaker 1: of depends on the area. But sometimes I'll carry them
- 27:45Speaker 1: down here. So when you're when you're running those and
- 27:48Speaker 1: at nighttime, when you're just kicking around camp, do you
- 27:51Speaker 1: just walk around the liners? Um? Yeah, if it's dry,
- 27:55Speaker 1: I will yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah, you said you
- 28:00Speaker 1: never get wet. We're all these plastic boots for a while.
- 28:03Speaker 1: But one last question on it. You said you never
- 28:05Speaker 1: get wet, but do you sweat enough in them sometimes
- 28:08Speaker 1: that you get them wet from the inside out? Yeah? Yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I should clarify that. Yeah, the the inside and then
- 28:13Speaker 1: I just keep rotating through socks. But the liners, particularly
- 28:18Speaker 1: on these, are dense enough. I used to use the
- 28:20Speaker 1: co Flak too, and they're super comfortable and they had
- 28:23Speaker 1: a real squishy nice but they would they the inner
- 28:26Speaker 1: boot would absorb a little bit more moisture. Scarpa bought
- 28:31Speaker 1: co Flak and now they're putting those high density type
- 28:35Speaker 1: liners in there, and those don't absorb as much water.
- 28:38Speaker 1: They'll they'll still get moist but you can open them
- 28:40Speaker 1: up and and they'll they'll dry out pretty quick. But yeah,
- 28:44Speaker 1: you have to rotate through your socks. But as far
- 28:47Speaker 1: as the boot itself, I've just had some issues with
- 28:50Speaker 1: with you know, certain types of leather boots that over
- 28:52Speaker 1: the course of a hunt, they get wet and you
- 28:54Speaker 1: can't ever get them dry again, and then it gets
- 28:56Speaker 1: cold and now they're frozen. They can't get your foot
- 28:58Speaker 1: in there, and you know that it just can't. Can
- 29:01Speaker 1: create some issues that way. Yeah, yeah, like wake up
- 29:04Speaker 1: and put your boot inside your sleeping bed to get
- 29:06Speaker 1: the thought out enough to put it on exactly. That's all.
- 29:08Speaker 1: It was fun. Yeah yeah, and then the feet are
- 29:10Speaker 1: gonna be real warm. Yeah yeah. It's a hell of
- 29:13Speaker 1: a way to start the morning. You don't wear those
- 29:14Speaker 1: plastic boots out squirrel hunting you, so you save it
- 29:17Speaker 1: for like I do save extreme. I don't want to
- 29:21Speaker 1: wear them out, only have to bear. I can't decide, uh,
- 29:25Speaker 1: I can't decide hunting sheet this year. I'm kind of
- 29:27Speaker 1: thinking about this running those uh running my timberline boots, ma'am.
- 29:32Speaker 1: You don't think it's origin. I think it's a bad idea. Yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 1: because I wore those when I went into the bear
- 29:36Speaker 1: Tooths a couple of weeks ago, and it didn't take long.
- 29:39Speaker 1: I mean again, on the trail, I was loving it. Oh,
- 29:42Speaker 1: that's They're the greatest thing in the world. Like the
- 29:44Speaker 1: older I think it's the perfect shoe man. Because we
- 29:47Speaker 1: decided to hop a pass and get into another drainage,
- 29:50Speaker 1: and as soon as we got off the trail, I
- 29:52Speaker 1: was not. They just don't have the lateral support, you know. Yeah,
- 29:56Speaker 1: it's more it's a it's like a great trail boot,
- 29:59Speaker 1: but it's so foble. I was actually kicking around doing it.
- 30:01Speaker 1: But I'm probably just gonna go with you know, go
- 30:03Speaker 1: grants to have that extra ump, but no nighttime not
- 30:10Speaker 1: bringing a nighttime comfy shoe. Well here's the deal though,
- 30:16Speaker 1: with our hunt. We're flying into what the outfit calls
- 30:20Speaker 1: his base camp, right that has definitely has he has
- 30:24Speaker 1: a weather port there. What you probably know what that is.
- 30:27Speaker 1: I didn't really know what it is, but weatherport when
- 30:29Speaker 1: we look at a picture of it, and tell me
- 30:31Speaker 1: if I just describe it wrong, Kurt, But it's like
- 30:33Speaker 1: a you know sometimes Yeah, I was going to describe
- 30:39Speaker 1: it as like when someone doesn't have enough money to
- 30:41Speaker 1: actually put up a garage. The shape it's the shape
- 30:44Speaker 1: of the shape of a clanet you're talking about. They
- 30:47Speaker 1: put up those like car forards, you know that you
- 30:49Speaker 1: can drive into. It's like a ten it's the last
- 30:52Speaker 1: five years or so. It kind of looks like that, right.
- 30:55Speaker 1: So where yeah, so where we're flying. Yeah, where you're
- 30:58Speaker 1: flying into you can bring and stuff like that. You know.
- 31:00Speaker 1: It's like when you're flying in, whether you have that
- 31:04Speaker 1: or not, you can um whether you have that or not,
- 31:10Speaker 1: you can bring in extra food, all kinds of stuff,
- 31:14Speaker 1: unless unless I have a couple of those extras there,
- 31:19Speaker 1: you know, because then we're gonna spike out for two
- 31:21Speaker 1: to three nights at a time, and so when I
- 31:24Speaker 1: come back, you know, I'll have that nice like you
- 31:27Speaker 1: call it creature comfort. That's a good plan. Yeah, Like,
- 31:30Speaker 1: but even when you have a pilot limits you. If
- 31:33Speaker 1: you have a pilot limits you to fifty pounds on
- 31:35Speaker 1: a flight, then it's pretty tight. But other times when
- 31:39Speaker 1: I've flown in with my brother Hunt Sheep, we flew
- 31:42Speaker 1: in extra emergency food and then like umfy shoes and
- 31:46Speaker 1: even some other nice stuff that you would like a
- 31:48Speaker 1: puffy jacket that you're never going to carry with you,
- 31:51Speaker 1: but you can just hang in a tree in a
- 31:52Speaker 1: dry bag. You know, you got to come back. So
- 31:55Speaker 1: what I'm talking more about is when you just like
- 31:57Speaker 1: strike off from the airstrip, and this case, we have
- 32:00Speaker 1: an outfit or friend who's letting us use like a
- 32:04Speaker 1: posh base camp that will then strike off from like
- 32:11Speaker 1: you're saying, for like a few days at a time.
- 32:12Speaker 1: So I'm talking about like leaving there. So you ask
- 32:17Speaker 1: me if I'm taking my crocks with me evening time,
- 32:20Speaker 1: comfy shoes, I won't. Um, Now, Kurt, how many pairs
- 32:26Speaker 1: of socks do you bring? Fourteen days? Fourteen days? So
- 32:31Speaker 1: my program is um your sock program, my sock program. Yeah,
- 32:36Speaker 1: so I I typically wear two pairs of of some
- 32:44Speaker 1: sort of hiking sock a little bit taller, and then
- 32:47Speaker 1: two pairs of once, two pairs of once. It just
- 32:50Speaker 1: it keeps the blisters down. If you haven't that many
- 32:53Speaker 1: problems with blisters, maybe should change boots. That's a good fun,
- 32:57Speaker 1: those blister inducing boots. He was just saying that they
- 33:01Speaker 1: don't give him a blisters. Yeah, so maybe it's my
- 33:05Speaker 1: socks that don't give me blisters. But not like a
- 33:07Speaker 1: liner and a hiking sock you actually double up on
- 33:10Speaker 1: like Marino blend socks. Yeah. Well, yeah, I should clarify
- 33:13Speaker 1: because I used to do the liner thing to eliminate blisters.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Silk liners, but it gives your foot like an unstable.
- 33:20Speaker 1: You don't talk about for while they made those, like
- 33:22Speaker 1: so we would run like a silk liner and then
- 33:24Speaker 1: you put a Marino blend thing over it, but every
- 33:27Speaker 1: you can't get a blister with them. But every time
- 33:30Speaker 1: you step, you feel your foot shift in a very
- 33:33Speaker 1: annoying way that leads your foot to get not blistered,
- 33:36Speaker 1: but sore because it's sliding around in there. It just
- 33:40Speaker 1: because it doesn't it doesn't grip. So it's like it
- 33:43Speaker 1: feels like it feels a little bit like every step
- 33:46Speaker 1: you feel your foot moving away. It doesn't normally move,
- 33:49Speaker 1: which I hate that feeling. So I gave up on liners.
- 33:52Speaker 1: You can eliminate blisters though, yeah, yeah, for sure. So
- 33:55Speaker 1: so I should clarify on this. They're they're basic, you know,
- 33:59Speaker 1: just above boot top height. Um. But it's it's a
- 34:03Speaker 1: lighter pair of a Merino based the type hiking sock
- 34:08Speaker 1: thinner and then a more cushioned um fuller hiking sock
- 34:13Speaker 1: on the on the outside, and and so and then
- 34:18Speaker 1: I'll just bring one extra pair of the thick pair,
- 34:21Speaker 1: rotate those in and out every day, but depending on
- 34:24Speaker 1: how long I go, you know, three pairs of the
- 34:28Speaker 1: of the lighter ones and they don't take up hardly
- 34:30Speaker 1: any room, but you can cycle them through their thin
- 34:33Speaker 1: enough that you know, if you get to a stream,
- 34:34Speaker 1: you can you can wash out one pair and just
- 34:37Speaker 1: keep rotating through so you don't get foot funking. And
- 34:40Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing that I found is on
- 34:42Speaker 1: those long hunts when that that inner pair of socks
- 34:46Speaker 1: that you have, they get so matted and they get
- 34:49Speaker 1: to the point where they get hard, but you can
- 34:52Speaker 1: by washington. That's it. So just just having enough pair
- 34:55Speaker 1: so I could cycle through them that way, Yeah, because
- 34:57Speaker 1: like wash them in the creek and then you just
- 34:59Speaker 1: hang them off your hack for the day and they
- 35:01Speaker 1: kind of refluff they do, and I just wash them
- 35:03Speaker 1: with like shampoo whatever happened to have with me. Yeah,
- 35:06Speaker 1: because I'll bring a little bit of shampoo. That's another question.
- 35:08Speaker 1: So I'll bring a little bit shampoo because my head starts.
- 35:10Speaker 1: It's the damn bad drive me creepy, that's do you
- 35:14Speaker 1: ever bring kind of soap now? But I bring wet wipes,
- 35:17Speaker 1: a little wet wipes. Um, you know that Dr bond
- 35:22Speaker 1: or soap, Like the teeniest container of that stuff is
- 35:26Speaker 1: worth it's worth quite a bit. But it really does. Man,
- 35:29Speaker 1: I feel like the face of that pepformant soap. Dude,
- 35:31Speaker 1: you're loving man. Yeah, And it kind of it gives
- 35:33Speaker 1: you a second wind, and I would imagine I've never
- 35:35Speaker 1: done a fourteen day hunt, you know. I think the
- 35:37Speaker 1: fongest I've made has been maybe seven or eight nights,
- 35:40Speaker 1: like actually living out of my backpack. But um, yeah,
- 35:44Speaker 1: like four or five days in when you're just really
- 35:46Speaker 1: getting that kind of greasy, grimy feel going and if
- 35:49Speaker 1: you're at that right creek in the sunshine to be
- 35:51Speaker 1: able to dr bees your head and your face. Man,
- 35:53Speaker 1: you're a new man, you know. Yeah that does sound nice.
- 35:57Speaker 1: One pair of pants, one pair of pants, Yeah, but
- 36:01Speaker 1: it's it's all in a layering system. So you know
- 36:04Speaker 1: usually uh you know, Marino bass layer and then um,
- 36:09Speaker 1: a down insulation layer that's typically packed away for your
- 36:14Speaker 1: leg down pants. Yeah. I started on the lower body
- 36:16Speaker 1: and then but bahoma backup because let's say you're hunting, Uh,
- 36:22Speaker 1: do you run that when you're hunting sheep in August
- 36:24Speaker 1: and Alaska? Or do you just trust it's not gonna
- 36:27Speaker 1: get that cold? No. I I always carried a part.
- 36:30Speaker 1: At that time, I was using the Patagonia synthetic micropuff.
- 36:34Speaker 1: They were some of the only ones that were more
- 36:36Speaker 1: for the August hunt because I feel like you can
- 36:38Speaker 1: stay totally warm with a marino base. Then I wear
- 36:43Speaker 1: like a wool blend like the first like cannab pant,
- 36:46Speaker 1: like a wool blend pant. Then a rain pant because
- 36:51Speaker 1: it's gonna be pretty damn cold to get cold with that.
- 36:55Speaker 1: You're absolutely right. So there's a couple of things that
- 36:57Speaker 1: The first thing for me is that I had a
- 37:00Speaker 1: couple of instances where you get a lot of got
- 37:02Speaker 1: a lot of wind, a lot of rain, and and
- 37:05Speaker 1: it just gets damn cold sitting in one spot, you know,
- 37:08Speaker 1: and you're get in spots where you have to glass,
- 37:11Speaker 1: you have to spend you know, multiple hours being in
- 37:13Speaker 1: one spot, or you get pinned down and you have
- 37:14Speaker 1: to wait him out. Even if it's sixty five degrees,
- 37:16Speaker 1: it's wet, it's cold. It's just like jumping in the ocean.
- 37:19Speaker 1: If it's sixty five degrees, you're gonna die from hypothermia.
- 37:21Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, so that's why I started carrying them.
- 37:24Speaker 1: And then and then secondly that then I know what
- 37:28Speaker 1: kind of segue into this. But it can also be
- 37:29Speaker 1: part of your sleep system. So you can shave some
- 37:32Speaker 1: weight by taking the lighter bag. Then you always have
- 37:35Speaker 1: that you know, when you have your puff layers up
- 37:36Speaker 1: and down, you know, I don't use a thirty two
- 37:39Speaker 1: degree bag. Yeah that's a good point, so you know
- 37:43Speaker 1: you could kind of get multiple use out of gear. Yeah,
- 37:46Speaker 1: that's a good point. I want to touch on that
- 37:50Speaker 1: sleeping with puffies inside of a bag, but we can
- 37:53Speaker 1: touch we can come back to that when we're talking
- 37:55Speaker 1: about sleeping bags. We don't get too off drag. So
- 37:57Speaker 1: do you run rain pants? Yeah? Yeah, the big believer
- 38:00Speaker 1: in rain pants. Yeah, yeah, that's that's I think that's
- 38:04Speaker 1: one of the key pieces of gear. And I think
- 38:06Speaker 1: they should calm wind and rain pants because yeah, let's
- 38:11Speaker 1: because a lot of times we put it on them
- 38:13Speaker 1: on just to beat the wind off of ye exactly
- 38:15Speaker 1: anytime it gets cold, you know, just keeping because so
- 38:18Speaker 1: many of the layers are permeable, you know, so that
- 38:21Speaker 1: they breathe that that that wind, you know, that air
- 38:24Speaker 1: transfer just pulls the heat you know, from your inner layers.
- 38:27Speaker 1: So it's nice to keep that barrier. I think too,
- 38:30Speaker 1: that you wind up packing when it comes to close.
- 38:34Speaker 1: You're more packing for the trip you just had than
- 38:39Speaker 1: the trip you're going on. Like you're really informed by
- 38:42Speaker 1: your last set of experiences. So if you go somewhere
- 38:45Speaker 1: and it's pretty warm and gravy, right, and then you
- 38:49Speaker 1: you're loading up for your next outing, you wind up
- 38:54Speaker 1: being like, oh, yeah, I'm cutting this out. I'm cutting
- 38:56Speaker 1: that out. If you're coming somewhere from just being wet
- 38:58Speaker 1: and cold, you think differently, like coming off if you
- 39:02Speaker 1: were going to come off a fog nack right and
- 39:05Speaker 1: go pack for a trip, no matter where it was,
- 39:08Speaker 1: you would approach it differently. After that. Definitely, you're like
- 39:12Speaker 1: driving rain and it gets in your head, you know,
- 39:16Speaker 1: the whole world like that. Yeah, it just gets in
- 39:19Speaker 1: your head and it's hard to like snap out of it.
- 39:20Speaker 1: You know. If you come somewhere and everything's like you know,
- 39:23Speaker 1: you go and you pack a pair of rain pants
- 39:25Speaker 1: and you go a week and never pull them out.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Lady Like, yeah, screw these rain pants, man. You know
- 39:31Speaker 1: you gotta So it's like you gotta like keep the
- 39:34Speaker 1: you gotta keep in mind, learn from what happened, but
- 39:39Speaker 1: not like really live it in a in a in
- 39:42Speaker 1: a big way, you know what I'm saying. Yeah, for sure,
- 39:45Speaker 1: where you're not you're not like trying to replicate, you're
- 39:49Speaker 1: not trying to do what you should have done when
- 39:51Speaker 1: you had a shitty trip. Yeah, you know, but that's
- 39:55Speaker 1: that's where a lot of the you know, the gear
- 39:58Speaker 1: hacks come from. You know, there's nothing like a real piss, poor,
- 40:01Speaker 1: miserable situation to make you change how you look at
- 40:04Speaker 1: what you have in your pack. You know, when when
- 40:07Speaker 1: you're cold for an extended period of time and you
- 40:10Speaker 1: have all that time to sit there and think about
- 40:12Speaker 1: the mistake you make because you didn't bring the right
- 40:13Speaker 1: piece of gear that tends to stick with you. Yeah,
- 40:17Speaker 1: I feel like those are the only times it's like
- 40:19Speaker 1: sunny and seventy per week, you're not thinking about what
- 40:22Speaker 1: you're sitting in your tents. There's the things I always
- 40:25Speaker 1: like a layout and look at and can't decide would
- 40:28Speaker 1: be down, can't booties, Mitts Mittens, like you spent a
- 40:35Speaker 1: few days with your fingers just froze and that's more
- 40:37Speaker 1: like a late season thing. But like Mittens, I look
- 40:39Speaker 1: at him, I'm like, really, you're gonna bring Mittens puffy pants.
- 40:43Speaker 1: We spent a lot of time debating puffy pants. A
- 40:46Speaker 1: big puffy like a down, full on down jacket, so
- 40:49Speaker 1: nice to have, and we'll debate it, but with but
- 40:55Speaker 1: with the early So if you're going if you're talking
- 40:58Speaker 1: like an early season deal, like right now or August September,
- 41:02Speaker 1: you're still saying you have Long John's. Do you guys
- 41:05Speaker 1: say Long John's where you grew up. We'll stay where
- 41:08Speaker 1: you born in here here. Yeah, you guys grew up
- 41:10Speaker 1: staying Long John's. Yeah, and my grandpa said it, Okay,
- 41:13Speaker 1: get your Long John's Brian Callahan causing long handles. Yeah,
- 41:16Speaker 1: then you got your pants and you're bringing puffies and
- 41:21Speaker 1: you're bringing rain pants and your pack ways what pounds six? Yeah?
- 41:28Speaker 1: All right, so let's let's adderstional thoughts. I was gonna say,
- 41:32Speaker 1: let's go above the above the belt. Okay, but for
- 41:35Speaker 1: you right now, you're not running. Don't tell me you're
- 41:38Speaker 1: bringing puffies on our little adventure here. Yeah? Really yeah,
- 41:42Speaker 1: and again because you know we're going we're flying in
- 41:45Speaker 1: but never but forget that. Could that'd be like saying, yeah,
- 41:50Speaker 1: you can't because think about it like this. Think about
- 41:52Speaker 1: it like this. Think about if you have a place
- 41:55Speaker 1: you could fly into and you have a base of operations.
- 41:59Speaker 1: If we were hunting right here out of town and
- 42:02Speaker 1: we're going away for two nights and I said you,
- 42:04Speaker 1: are you bringing your puffy pants? You wouldn't say, yeah,
- 42:07Speaker 1: they're in my house. It's the same thing. Okay, you
- 42:15Speaker 1: follow me, Yeah, I follow you. I'm gonna bring him.
- 42:19Speaker 1: I'm talking about when you strike out to go spend
- 42:23Speaker 1: several days, what could leave what could turn into several days,
- 42:27Speaker 1: Not what you're leaving behind in your truck or at
- 42:30Speaker 1: a weather port, or at a cabin or in your boat.
- 42:36Speaker 1: Follow me at the airstrip. It's like striking out. So
- 42:40Speaker 1: you're striking out from your truck. Say you're telling me
- 42:44Speaker 1: that you're gonna bring puffies for what reason when it
- 42:48Speaker 1: gets cold, Well, I might do. What I might do
- 42:52Speaker 1: is not bringing long handles. Yeah, because what I've like,
- 42:57Speaker 1: what I've started to do is because with long John's
- 43:00Speaker 1: always kind of like having to make the decision in
- 43:02Speaker 1: the morning on what like whether they're gonna be with
- 43:05Speaker 1: you on you for the rest of the day, right
- 43:06Speaker 1: because it's such a pain. And take your pants off,
- 43:08Speaker 1: take your boots off and get it take them off,
- 43:10Speaker 1: you know we're put them or put them on midday.
- 43:13Speaker 1: So I almost like being like hunting in my bass layer,
- 43:17Speaker 1: which is just my pants, and then that way, as
- 43:19Speaker 1: it progressively gets worse or colder, I can just add
- 43:24Speaker 1: or take off. But I always know that like, oh ship,
- 43:27Speaker 1: we're still we're gonna hike for five miles right now,
- 43:30Speaker 1: Like I can just strip down and there are my
- 43:33Speaker 1: regular pants and I'm ready to go. Yeah. That's a
- 43:35Speaker 1: good point because when you wake up in the morning,
- 43:37Speaker 1: you got your long handles on, You're you're like, dude,
- 43:41Speaker 1: I'm not taking these off because I'm so comfortable, and
- 43:43Speaker 1: then you're like, you know that within three yards you're
- 43:47Speaker 1: gonna be like, really, man, I wish you had taken
- 43:49Speaker 1: them off, right, Yeah, alright, um, and they're they're probably
- 43:55Speaker 1: way you probably know exactly, but I'm guessing they weigh
- 43:59Speaker 1: pretty close to the same amount. Yeah, yeah, because I
- 44:04Speaker 1: mean the heavier wolf stuff, you know, it's it's definitely yeah,
- 44:11Speaker 1: I don't have the exact spects on it, but that
- 44:12Speaker 1: you're right, a lot more warmth. Yeah. Uh. When you
- 44:18Speaker 1: count your pack weight, yeah, you're you're you're not counting
- 44:22Speaker 1: what you You're you're not counting your main apparel. But
- 44:25Speaker 1: are you counting the weight of your puffies? Yeah? Yeah,
- 44:28Speaker 1: my puffies are puffies and in socks, you know, gloves.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Rain gear doesn't get counted though, yeah, rain gears in there.
- 44:37Speaker 1: And do you run and then do you like to
- 44:39Speaker 1: run the same basic set up for uppers Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 44:44Speaker 1: it's virtually identical. Marin Bay Marino base than like a
- 44:49Speaker 1: thing puffy yep. This year I'm thinking about going with
- 44:56Speaker 1: think about switching it up a little bit and I
- 45:00Speaker 1: have an uh, going like a T shirt Marino T
- 45:06Speaker 1: shirt and then like a heavier shirt and just have
- 45:13Speaker 1: that be my like a T shirt in my basic
- 45:15Speaker 1: because you can get so hot that time of year,
- 45:17Speaker 1: in the middle of the day walking up some never
- 45:21Speaker 1: ending hill. A T shirt can feel pretty good. It's
- 45:25Speaker 1: the same materials, Like you got like a cotton like, no,
- 45:28Speaker 1: you're just doubling up Belltown Pizza T shirt on. You
- 45:31Speaker 1: got like a Marino T shirt. That's what I used
- 45:34Speaker 1: to do. I really like them. Yeah, yeah, gonna be
- 45:38Speaker 1: careful for that is the middle of the day going
- 45:41Speaker 1: to a T shirt. Man, you gotta pull out the
- 45:43Speaker 1: sunscreen because you get worked over on some hills or bugs.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Bugs yeah yeah, but bugs aren't usually that bad up
- 45:51Speaker 1: on the wind swept ridges and stuff. You know, that's
- 45:53Speaker 1: better have you got mauled by bugs? Much hunting? Sheep
- 45:56Speaker 1: doll sheet? Oh yeah, yeah for sure, down in the
- 46:00Speaker 1: bottoms and the willow bottoms that could be pretty, and
- 46:02Speaker 1: a little white socks. I found they were more miserable
- 46:06Speaker 1: than the than the mosquitoes. There night, my we're just
- 46:10Speaker 1: getting mauled by them at our cabin. And I did
- 46:13Speaker 1: my daughter up and and bugs pray, but didn't get her.
- 46:18Speaker 1: You know when kids are bent over. Her shirt rides up.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, man, it looks like I felt like a
- 46:25Speaker 1: bad dad. Didn't just it's just nothing but bug bites
- 46:31Speaker 1: on that one strip of skin between her waistline and
- 46:34Speaker 1: her shirt line. I felt pre horrible. She's like, you
- 46:37Speaker 1: didn't box pray there? Yeah, so I stuff like that.
- 46:44Speaker 1: You bring a little sunscreen, No, I've never brought sunscreen.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Do you bring a little bug Yeah? Yeah, I did
- 46:51Speaker 1: just dent beat so you can have a small container. Yeah,
- 46:55Speaker 1: and a lot of times in Alaska and if it
- 46:57Speaker 1: was on an early hunt, um, I just bring with
- 46:59Speaker 1: those super for lightweight head nets. M you know, I
- 47:03Speaker 1: mean they can't wait but an ounce, and then once
- 47:06Speaker 1: you have your ball cap on, you don't even need
- 47:09Speaker 1: the hooped one. Yeah, you just keep them off your face.
- 47:12Speaker 1: I just found those white socks, man. They you know,
- 47:14Speaker 1: they dig and burrow underneath your hat and even when
- 47:18Speaker 1: you're wearing you know, the bug spray. Just yeah, they're
- 47:23Speaker 1: ferocious or candy. Do you like a heavy duty rain
- 47:25Speaker 1: jacket or a light duty rain jacket? I'm I'm using
- 47:28Speaker 1: a three year, A three layer, um you know, waterproof, breathable,
- 47:34Speaker 1: um use, you know, multiple different So yeah, it's probably
- 47:38Speaker 1: more on the heavy duty side than the lightweight. UM.
- 47:41Speaker 1: I've used the two layer before too, and it it worked.
- 47:46Speaker 1: The only problem was is that a lot of times
- 47:49Speaker 1: on the top of the shoulders or anywhere where your
- 47:51Speaker 1: pack was writing, it just eventually would start to wet
- 47:55Speaker 1: and and it was hard to get dry after that.
- 47:58Speaker 1: But so that was kind of why I went to
- 47:59Speaker 1: the re layer. Had a little better luck, and there
- 48:02Speaker 1: wasn't hardly any difference in the way A couple of ounces.
- 48:05Speaker 1: What do you do for gloves? Us bring light gloves?
- 48:08Speaker 1: I do? I have a I have a light pair
- 48:11Speaker 1: of the Outdoor Research I think they call them the
- 48:13Speaker 1: Peel four hundreds or something, but there are a Marino
- 48:16Speaker 1: synthetic blend and UM so even if your hands get wet,
- 48:21Speaker 1: they will you know, they stay pretty warm and they
- 48:24Speaker 1: dry out real quick. But then I take the o
- 48:26Speaker 1: R mits, the gore waterproof mits over that. So if
- 48:31Speaker 1: you do get into the alders or something, you know,
- 48:34Speaker 1: real wet conditions, um, they'll keep your hands dry. And yeah,
- 48:40Speaker 1: it's not as convenient you don't have the fingers, but
- 48:44Speaker 1: I haven't had a lot of luck with with waterproof
- 48:49Speaker 1: fingered gloves. Just seems no, it's all a lie man. Yeah,
- 48:55Speaker 1: I'm not saying that they're not out there, but I haven't.
- 48:58Speaker 1: You can buy a fish or like what do they
- 49:01Speaker 1: call grabbing gloves, you know, if you really want something
- 49:04Speaker 1: that's a hunting final Like yeah, final gloves are like waterproof,
- 49:08Speaker 1: but they're just sweaty and swampy. Yeah, and that's a thing.
- 49:12Speaker 1: That's so let's say you were hunting. Let's say you
- 49:14Speaker 1: were just hunting like archery, you're hunting September archery. Elk. Yeah,
- 49:18Speaker 1: you wouldn't bring the myths, no, no, no, And I
- 49:21Speaker 1: mean we have. That's the great thing about honey out,
- 49:24Speaker 1: you know, especially in this state, you're gonna have an
- 49:26Speaker 1: unbelievable you know, forecast. You can check everything you can
- 49:29Speaker 1: pack for the specific weather that you're going to have
- 49:32Speaker 1: opposed to what you guys are going into or you know,
- 49:35Speaker 1: even what I'm going to do. I you could be
- 49:39Speaker 1: in snow, you could be eighty degrees, you could be
- 49:41Speaker 1: anywhere in between. You know, August tenth up there. Yeah,
- 49:44Speaker 1: we've wanted We've hunted in August in the snow, which
- 49:47Speaker 1: when you're looking for a white animal really like, yeah,
- 49:51Speaker 1: it's bad. Or sitting in the tent, yep, sitting the
- 49:55Speaker 1: tent for two days and then it snows and it's
- 49:59Speaker 1: got that kind of fog. Equality Yeah, I remember in
- 50:03Speaker 1: August hunting sheep and it's snowed, and then it finally
- 50:07Speaker 1: got just beautiful. And looking at tracks on the mountain
- 50:12Speaker 1: side and just filling the tracks and my spot and
- 50:15Speaker 1: scope and trying to figure out where the tracks went,
- 50:17Speaker 1: and realized they ended because there's a sheep standing there.
- 50:20Speaker 1: I couldn't see the sheep. I can just see the
- 50:22Speaker 1: trail ended. Yes, no, man, you're but I'm glad to
- 50:26Speaker 1: have this conversation because you're reminding me of all the
- 50:29Speaker 1: bad things that can happen. Well, you know, that's the
- 50:33Speaker 1: interesting thing, especially up there, is you never know what
- 50:37Speaker 1: you're gonna be getting into, so you kind of really
- 50:39Speaker 1: have to prepare for everything, whether or not you leave
- 50:41Speaker 1: it at camp or not. Yea, but with gloves, you
- 50:44Speaker 1: know that sounds like you don't pack a pair of
- 50:46Speaker 1: gloves actually like really protect your hands. Yeah, yeah, but
- 50:52Speaker 1: that's that's the other thing that I found with the
- 50:54Speaker 1: mitst though, is that even when your hands get cold,
- 50:57Speaker 1: you know, when you have all of your fingers together
- 50:58Speaker 1: inside the mit my ends seem to warm up quicker. Yeah,
- 51:02Speaker 1: and then you canet you know, if you can keep
- 51:05Speaker 1: that warmth up that it'll help dry out the gloves
- 51:07Speaker 1: you have under it, you know, the soft shell are
- 51:10Speaker 1: So that's kind of been my program that I've stuck with.
- 51:14Speaker 1: And they're extremely light, you know. That's another added feature
- 51:19Speaker 1: I've gone to. Uh like really not unless it's like
- 51:24Speaker 1: just getting that that cold where like okay, you have
- 51:26Speaker 1: to have gloves on, which a lot of times is
- 51:28Speaker 1: getting near freezing, and so you get into usually once
- 51:31Speaker 1: it gets near freezing, you're getting into sort of a
- 51:33Speaker 1: dryer state, right because you're not looking at rain anymore,
- 51:36Speaker 1: but possibly snow. I know there's that in between and
- 51:38Speaker 1: probably seed a lot in Alaska, but I've found having
- 51:42Speaker 1: better luck just having my hands out there getting drenched
- 51:46Speaker 1: and just kind of being like, yes, this is how
- 51:48Speaker 1: it's going to be today and dealing with it, and
- 51:50Speaker 1: then at the end of the day when I get
- 51:51Speaker 1: in my tent or whatever, being able to put on
- 51:55Speaker 1: some dry gloves, or when the rain stops, put on
- 51:57Speaker 1: some dry gloves. When you get out of the willows,
- 51:59Speaker 1: put on some dry gloves, because it just feels like
- 52:01Speaker 1: if you get your liners wet, I almost feel like
- 52:04Speaker 1: that's worse having wet gloves on your hands than just
- 52:06Speaker 1: having wet hands, because the minute it stops raining, your
- 52:09Speaker 1: skin dries and you put it. And what I've been
- 52:12Speaker 1: doing two is I'll just run them inside my you know,
- 52:16Speaker 1: rain jacket pockets as I'm hiking along, you know, if
- 52:19Speaker 1: I don't need my hands, and that seems to keep
- 52:21Speaker 1: them warming up. Yeah, they're wet, but once you get
- 52:25Speaker 1: them what it takes a hell of a nice day
- 52:27Speaker 1: to ever get them dry again. Yeah, you gloves for sure. Yeah,
- 52:31Speaker 1: I'm with you there. I I do everything I can
- 52:33Speaker 1: to keep those, you know, the actual insulating layer dry,
- 52:37Speaker 1: and even as far as just wearing the mits over
- 52:41Speaker 1: a bare hand. You know, if it's if it's wet
- 52:44Speaker 1: and blowing and you know, just hovering at that forty
- 52:48Speaker 1: five super cold, or it feels cold with the wet,
- 52:51Speaker 1: you can just put those over bare hands and we'll
- 52:54Speaker 1: keep your fingers warm. Do you uh? Do you? Um?
- 53:00Speaker 1: We're in a netgator, I have uh. Yeah, Depending on
- 53:05Speaker 1: the time of year, I'll take one with me. Um,
- 53:08Speaker 1: if it's earlier, normally I don't, but um, you know,
- 53:12Speaker 1: if if there's any chance of snow, yeah, I have
- 53:15Speaker 1: a lightweight one kind of a poly blend like a belt.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Do you wear a belt or does an internal like
- 53:22Speaker 1: built in belt on my bridges apparently? Yeah? Um, yeah, yeah,
- 53:27Speaker 1: no I do. I do, But I just use some
- 53:29Speaker 1: of our webbing. I just have, you know, just the
- 53:31Speaker 1: real thin one inch webbing and the and the tension lock. Yeah,
- 53:36Speaker 1: that's the kind of belt I like for like I
- 53:39Speaker 1: I generally wear like a heavy duty belt normally for
- 53:42Speaker 1: most stuff. But I now have a super thin, dinky,
- 53:45Speaker 1: little three quarter inch webbing belt because I hate the
- 53:50Speaker 1: feeling of my backpack digging into my belt. Yeah, I
- 53:54Speaker 1: do too, And it's and it's keeping all of that
- 53:57Speaker 1: volume on the waistline as small as you can. I
- 54:00Speaker 1: mean for me at least. Um, well, you know some
- 54:04Speaker 1: pants have the doubled up belt loops, or if you
- 54:07Speaker 1: go with a thicker webbing belt, all of that stuff
- 54:10Speaker 1: creates that you know, um, that that extra thickness right
- 54:14Speaker 1: in your belt line, and it just becomes a pressure
- 54:17Speaker 1: point for for you know, when you're packing, when you
- 54:20Speaker 1: have your heavy pack, when you tighten the hip belt
- 54:22Speaker 1: on it. Yeah, especially on the belt loop areas. I've
- 54:26Speaker 1: noticed some of the pants I've used, so yeah, because
- 54:29Speaker 1: I'll get it to where I can feel like some
- 54:32Speaker 1: something like numb sensations almost like on the front of
- 54:36Speaker 1: my thighs kind of coming off my hips a little bit.
- 54:39Speaker 1: A lot of times I'll look in there and do
- 54:40Speaker 1: some wiggling around and something's just been bunched up, you know,
- 54:43Speaker 1: just to create that pinch point. Yeah, kind of dyes,
- 54:47Speaker 1: you run. I use those. I use the first light
- 54:51Speaker 1: wool ones, the ones that are a little bit longer,
- 54:54Speaker 1: I do. I do those, man, those are super comfortable,
- 54:58Speaker 1: and it's almost like having like half of a set
- 55:01Speaker 1: of law John's. It is because you've got long socks on.
- 55:04Speaker 1: You can pull up to your knees. The only thing
- 55:06Speaker 1: that's not exposed is your kneecap. Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 55:09Speaker 1: I really dig those. Yeah, they're comfortable. Do you uh,
- 55:13Speaker 1: how many extra pairs ones you bring along? That's it,
- 55:17Speaker 1: just the ones, just the one you're taking a minute
- 55:19Speaker 1: wash them on a super nice day. Yeah. No, listen
- 55:26Speaker 1: if I don't have a problem with that, I don't
- 55:29Speaker 1: have a problem that at all. That's what the wet
- 55:32Speaker 1: wipes are for that, yeaheah. Yeah, so you gotta keep up.
- 55:35Speaker 1: There's some maintenance that goes along with it. Yeah. We
- 55:39Speaker 1: used to mess around with um various powders, you know,
- 55:43Speaker 1: to powder and stuff like that. Do you do anything
- 55:45Speaker 1: like that? I don't. Just wet wipes. Yeah, just wet wipes.
- 55:48Speaker 1: You bring one wet white for every day. I bring
- 55:50Speaker 1: one of those little packages and I shower in a
- 55:53Speaker 1: bag or it's a shower and souped up wet wiper,
- 55:57Speaker 1: genuinely like, oh no, just just the regular they're unscented ones. Yeah,
- 56:02Speaker 1: you like the uncented I do. Yeah. I don't know why. Yeah,
- 56:08Speaker 1: it's not gonna I don't believe that it makes a difference.
- 56:11Speaker 1: It's just seems like the thing you should do if
- 56:13Speaker 1: you're hunting. I usually bring one. I usually bring one
- 56:16Speaker 1: for every day. But do you ever you familiar with
- 56:17Speaker 1: shower in a bag? Basically a big gass wet white. Okay, yeah,
- 56:21Speaker 1: it's a big wet white. You know, you can do
- 56:23Speaker 1: a good scrubbing, but then you up having all the
- 56:26Speaker 1: damn things unless you burn them or something. Yeah, you
- 56:29Speaker 1: ever make fires? I'm not very often? No? No, what
- 56:34Speaker 1: do you bring for a hat? Ball cap? Obviously? Yeah,
- 56:39Speaker 1: ball cap and then stocking hat? You know several different types.
- 56:42Speaker 1: And do you run like a do you run around
- 56:44Speaker 1: me Warren? Where you wear your stocking hat over your
- 56:45Speaker 1: ball cap? No? I don't. But this last year, I uh,
- 56:51Speaker 1: I had I started using and I can't even remember
- 56:53Speaker 1: who makes it, Morment or something. The hoodie the full
- 56:57Speaker 1: face not full face, be like a half faced hoodie
- 57:01Speaker 1: that you can pull up over. Yeah, and that was slick.
- 57:04Speaker 1: I like that, but kind of the same principle where
- 57:07Speaker 1: you can just pull it up over your ball cap.
- 57:08Speaker 1: And I found that I was wearing my stocking hat
- 57:11Speaker 1: rarely after having that, and it was real lightweight materials,
- 57:15Speaker 1: so you know, to dry out even after it got
- 57:17Speaker 1: snow on it. You don't wear like a wool blend
- 57:20Speaker 1: stocking cap. I do have one, Yeah, yeah, I do
- 57:24Speaker 1: have one that I carry on something like your stocking cap.
- 57:27Speaker 1: Do you ever like get rid of the stock and
- 57:28Speaker 1: cap you like because you're worried about it being too
- 57:30Speaker 1: heavy and go with a light weight stock and no,
- 57:32Speaker 1: I can't say I've done that. I left behind my
- 57:36Speaker 1: last September on my elcoin. I left behind my woolve
- 57:39Speaker 1: stock and cap and just went with the first light
- 57:42Speaker 1: Chama hoodie. Oh yeah, because I found the same thing.
- 57:45Speaker 1: You're wearing that things so when it gets chill, you're
- 57:47Speaker 1: putting that on, and then next thing you know, you
- 57:49Speaker 1: went a whole week. You never put your beanie hat on,
- 57:51Speaker 1: you know. And plus I like sleeping in that thing
- 57:53Speaker 1: because it's loose, So you don't like the stocking cap
- 57:56Speaker 1: sometimes for me on my ears, oh, if you've been
- 57:59Speaker 1: wearing all, your ears start to hurt, sleep your ears hurt.
- 58:03Speaker 1: But those hoodies are nice. I was behind the curve
- 58:06Speaker 1: on that one. Most everybody I knew. I hunted with one,
- 58:09Speaker 1: and I don't know why I did never conform, but
- 58:12Speaker 1: I know why they have them now. I uh The
- 58:14Speaker 1: reason I like the little, the thin marino net gator
- 58:19Speaker 1: is I also sleep where I wear it as my
- 58:21Speaker 1: little tuk at night. That's French for hat. I think.
- 58:24Speaker 1: I wear it at night and I pulled over my
- 58:27Speaker 1: eyes to make things extra dark. You know what I'm saying.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Keeps your ears warm, makes everything nice and dark so
- 58:33Speaker 1: you can sleep good. It's the perfect thing, especially in
- 58:36Speaker 1: Alaska this time of year. Yep, that's things like it's
- 58:38Speaker 1: sometimes hard to sleep, yeah for sure. Yeah. I remember
- 58:44Speaker 1: my brothers one time, like, yeah hunt in August. They
- 58:46Speaker 1: one time we're watching some sheep and I said, there's
- 58:49Speaker 1: no point during the night when you couldn't wake up
- 58:53Speaker 1: and find them with find him with binoculars. Yeah, always
- 58:57Speaker 1: that light out it starts to drive you crazy. Yeah,
- 59:01Speaker 1: so I like that even just upo my fish chack.
- 59:03Speaker 1: I was running my thing over my eyes at night
- 59:06Speaker 1: long still long days. I really kind of rely on it.
- 59:12Speaker 1: A little thin neck gator. Used it for tons of
- 59:14Speaker 1: stuff and keeps down sunburn on your neck and like
- 59:19Speaker 1: you're always getting your neck cooked. It's amazing what those
- 59:21Speaker 1: thin little marino ones will do for you, just for uh,
- 59:24Speaker 1: for up in your warmth. If you lose a lot
- 59:27Speaker 1: of heat out of your necks when you put that
- 59:28Speaker 1: thing on. It really it insulates. I'll do to gushes
- 59:31Speaker 1: out of there, man, if you can kind of cork
- 59:32Speaker 1: that up with one of those things. What else? Ni, oh,
- 59:38Speaker 1: what else? I guess it's while we're still on clothes.
- 59:43Speaker 1: Talk gators. Yeah, I think people put I think a
- 59:48Speaker 1: lot of guys were gators. They think they look badass.
- 59:52Speaker 1: I think it looks like when you see a mug
- 59:54Speaker 1: walking around and it's hot out and dry out and
- 59:56Speaker 1: they got gators on, Like, what are you gatoring? Well,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: all gators are good for No, let me answer your questions,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: because you might be running like a very low profile
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: more of like almost like a running shoe, like a
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: body Rick Smith runs. And in that case, if you
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: have one of those like small tightening, they call him
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: scree gators. You know you're keeping the junk out of
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: your shoes. It's I'm talking about I'm talking about big
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: palon knee. Gators are good for the snow, they're good
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: for wading through a bunch of wet brush, and they're
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: good crossing a shallow creek. Crossing the shallow creek. But
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: to be out tromping around and gators in nice weather.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: I don't understand. It's like people who go snowshoeing when
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: there's only a photo of snow, because I just want
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: the experience of wearing the snowshoe, flipping snow up on
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: their butt. Yeah, like I'm going snowshoeing, whether I need
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: them or not. I think some people like the run gators.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: They feel like they're like a badass mountain hunter when
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: they strapped those gators on. I really think that that's true. Kurt,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: what's your take on this. Well, I'm six ft four
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: and I had a hell of a time finding pants
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: that bloods that weren't. Yeah. Yeah, so a lot of times.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: That's that's why I wore them. But that being said,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: I I totally understand where you're coming from. You know
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: when it's but if you're on a long hunt, So take,
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: for example, on this hunt, are you going to take gators?
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: No cumbering rain pants? Okay, so I always, I typically
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: always take gators. But on a nice warm day, you
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: figure out what do you what do you do with them?
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: You know, you had them on in the morning because
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: you get up in the morning and you know, everything's wet,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: so you don't want your pants to get wet or
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: you know, that's the reason that you have the gators.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: And then it gets nice in the middle of the day,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: and normally I'll wear them all day unless it gets
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: so hot that it's uncomfortable in your calves and everything,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: you know, because that's the thing is they just get like, yeah,
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: it's just things get swampy inside there. Yeah. And if
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: you've got a good pair of rain pants that you
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: can buckle down or tighten down, you get you. I
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: get my if I'm putting on, I'll even roll my
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: pants up one or two times and then put my
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: rain pants on and buckle them down. Yeah, that's a
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: pro move if it's snowy. I like the gators, especially
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: tent camping like this kind of stuff, because then you
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: get all that snow packed up, you pull your pants off,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: and you realize this guy like that wet globs of
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: basically like snowballs living between your pants and boots and stuff.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: That's that's not good. Gators are nice for that. Yeah,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: why are you looking at me like that? I'm just
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: gonna add about your time about rolling your pants up
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: and uh, I don't know why I got to do
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: in that last September. That's how they hunt in New Zealand.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: They hunting shorts and boots. Yeah, but I was. I
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: was wearing my gators. But what I was doing is
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: I had those long, tall first Light socks on it,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: and I was tucking my pants into the tops of
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: those socks so that they wouldn't be on top of
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: my boots where there's moisture coming in even underneath the
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: gators a little bit. And as soon as you know
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: that moisture hits something that's dry, it's gonna want to
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: wick and travel. And I would find that even though
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: I was all covered up, when I had my pants down,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: I would have like the bottom, you know, fullat of
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: my pants, possibly the tops of my socks would be wet.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: And You're like, can I really be sweating that much?
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: Or why? Why was that? So as soon as I
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: started doing that and bringing my cuffs up off of
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: my boots and just letting the gator be with the boot,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: I had a h percent completely dry feet and dry
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: socks and dry you know. When I got an a tent,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: I would roll down my pants and they'd be completely dry.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: People on people underestimate wicking. Yeah, water travels crazy places.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: If it's super wet and you're getting your cuffs wet,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: that's stuff of migrate way up your arm. Yeah. Well,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: John Edwards and snails telling me that he thinks a
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: lot of people complain about having wet leaky boots because
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: the water will actually come all the way up their pants,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: hit their socks, and then go down their socket into
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: their boot where they're like the top of their boots
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: better than their toes are. Do you ever look up
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: water in the dictionary? No, it's good. You think you
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: know all about water? It calls it. I think of
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: liking almost universal solvent. There's nothing new with what we're
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: talking about. Um, you good on gators. I'm gonna bring them.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: You bring them, not just your rain pants. Maybe I'll
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: bring mind too. Good idea. You agree that people like
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: the esthetics of gators. Yeah, yeah, I agree with you.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I like them. Do they realize how how sweaty they
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: can make your calves? I gotta think about it. I
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: can't decide. Um that's it for duds, I think so
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: any there are accessories that we missed, gloves, hats, shades,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: What about some shades, shades, bring shades on your sheep. No, no, no,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: it's bad luck. It will just start raining. Really no,
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: but no, I don't know. Brick chains, uh got Some
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: days are nice to have, they are, yeah, yeah, I
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: shouldn't say. I think that's that's been because you almost
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: have to bring a case, you do, and you have
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: to keep track of them, and yeah, some days are nice,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: but they're a little bit hard to maintain. But some
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: days it's just like it's so nice to have them. Yeah,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: especially if you're on the alpine not a lot of
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: shady trees to hide under. No, but it's hard to
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: glass with them, you know, you end up taking them off. Yeah,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: and I've had to be. I've had to be. There's
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: one in particularly member cause I got a couple of
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: photographs from it, like early on, as long as twenty
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: years ago, um, hunting doll sheep where we were even
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: like making taking duct tape to convert sunglasses into glacier glasses.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: It was that bad, especially when you get out in snowfields. Yeah,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: it is horrible, yep, and like trying to seal off
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: anything around, like you're like that hurting for sunglasses and
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: like keeping that in mind. If you're hanging around glaciers
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: and stuff, keeping that in mind makes you be like,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: okay with carrying around sunglass because it's just as miserable.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: I take it you're gonna bring some after that for sure.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: Where it's just horrible. There's a lot of glare. Even
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: the rock gets glary, the shale gets glary. You don't
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: believe in them. No, I wouldn't say that I don't
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: believe in them because I mean I always have sunglasses
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: with me or on, you know, all summer. But I
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: think it you just kind of get to that point
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: of you know, what can I live without? Yeah, I'm
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: with you. Yeah, boys Coast to send me some camouflage sunglasses,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: so yeah, so I'll be able to hide. Dude, don't
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: set them down. Well they got there. Hopefully it's yeah,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: hopefully it's reduced glare lens too, any any other clothing.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: So I want to move on anither clothing. I think
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: I think we can move on unless we want to
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: throw in that. Uh that I got a question about
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: how we're not a question, but I want to see
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: what you guys think about cotton. If you've ever really
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: seen somebody go down, because of cotton, right because people
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: say cotton kills and then have you figured it till
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: we ever actually seen someone gets smoked. I've seen people. Um,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: I didn't even think of the dudes. His first name
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: is Chuck. I don't want to say his last name. Uh.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: Hunting Caribou had like a lot of like Carhart type
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: stuff with them, and his just absolute system failure. What
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: heavy cold, because you can't there's just nothing like you take,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: like there's nothing better. Man like dudes like you know,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: like big time horse guys, you know, because they can,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: like horse guys can pack so much ship with them, right,
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: So horse guys will be like, you know, bring a
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: big car heart jacket, like there's nothing better when it's
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: cold to wake up and have that like wind proof
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: you know thing. But um, and I've happily owned many
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: of those things. But it's just like the kind of
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: thing like once you get something like that wet, you
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: can't get that. There's no wear in that dry. There's
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: just nowhere in the dry and you could be packing
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: around I don't know, five ten pounds of waterways jacket
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: like that for sure. Their day I had to wash
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: my daughter's sleeping bag in a five gallon bucket, you know.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: I remember putting like filled that bucket about the third
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: the way up. Remember we were beach comb and I
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: found that that joga yep jugga detergent that I think
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: came from the Japanese tsunami. Remember, because all that Japanese
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: stuff laying everywhere still five down bucket about a third
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: way up with water and just put a little splash
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: that next I didn't have you other kind of salt
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: and put that sleeping bag into that water vanished. I
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: was like, wow, man, that's like aple, Like is that
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: called pounds water? You know? More? Yeah, you can fit
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: a lot of water, I mean a whole five gallon
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: buckets forty pounds. You can fit a lot of water
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: into fabric. And the fabric that you're not going to
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: get it out of I think is no good. So
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: in that way, yeah, and then I've seen people that
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: had cotton socks. It just don't work unless you're just tough.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: But my brother can hunt cotton socks because he's impervious
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: to discomfort. It's amazing. Yeah, he defies logic sometimes. I
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: was with him, you know, a couple of weekends ago
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: for two or three nights in the woods, and I'm
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: just like, really, that's what you're wearing, and that's what
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: you're bringing, all right. Um, he's also got llamas too,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: so he's got a little bit of that horse guy
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: in the mentality, you know, bringing the bring the kitchen sink,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, he can bring extra socks with him
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: for sure. The third day, my kids found a dead
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: gunnal looks like it's like a fish. It looks like
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: an eel. They found it dead in a tide pool
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: and then they were like put a scallop shell on
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: the fire and boiled it. And it was already kind
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: of nasty, you know when they found it and boiled,
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: and he has ate the whole thing. They thought that
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: was funny, but he just like doesn't you know what
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: I mean, dude doesn't. It's nothing bothers him. So you
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: can't learn a whole lot from him, you know. I
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: remember one time he drank coffee mug full of rendered
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: bar oil. Oh my, we're just drank it because he
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: wanted the calories. There's nothing happened to him either a
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: coffee moment, a coffee mug of melted rendered bear lard
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: and just drank it. No, he said, no, ill effect,
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: it just sounds foul. Dude's impervious. Man, This conversation would
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: drive him nuts because you're just thinking, like, oh, crying out,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: wowd it's just complicated. Threw some stuff in a bag
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: and go. No, he'd never participate to this kind of
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: conversation that he just can't just like beyond his comprehension.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: People fussing over Rose, what about you? You ever seen
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Cotton really get work over someone? Yeah, a similar situation.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: I hunted with a guy when I first moved to Alaska,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: and uh, we went on I hadn't hunted with him
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: on on this type of hunt before, but we went
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: on a goat hunt and it was late October. It
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: was a registration hunt, and you know that typical heavy
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: snow um hanging on all the alders and he had
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: some sort of you know, Carhart type work pant on
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: with some gators and yeah, by the time we got
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: there was about five miles in, and you know, he
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: was borderline hypothermic, and you just got everything set up,
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: got him in a sleeping bag, you know, and then
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: of course you're stuck, is the only thing that you have.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: So the trip was over. You know, we we spent
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: the night, got him warm, waited for it to warm
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: up a little bit that day, put the same cold
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: pants on it out. You know. It's like that sucked,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: but especially since every goats in there. But yeah, yeah,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: that type of situation, it can it can become scary
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: in a hurry. Right, Yeah. Do you bring, um, anything
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: that that would qualify as survival equipment. I think the
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: biggest piece of survival equipment I take is a SAT phone,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: you know, and something like this. Um, all right, you
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: know I have an in reach to one of the
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: two and UM, I think that that's my biggest portion
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: of it, you know, and I just kind of keep
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: my route updated it with my wife and so you know,
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: have check in times and um. But yeah, as far
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: as a specific piece of equipment or you know, within
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: a first aid kit, just kind of your standard stuff. Um.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: You know, I don't have a special skill set in
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: the medical fields, so I don't take anything that I
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: don't know how to use. And that isn't far beyond
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: you know, trying to keep an infection down if you
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: get caught. Yeah, I bring with triple triple antibiotic ointment
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: and assortment of bandages. Yeah, yeah, I mean that that
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: would be probably my biggest concern of something that I
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: could take. Yeah, alcohol wipes, triple antibiotic ointment, yeah, knockle
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: band aids, regular band aids. And I bring a little
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: bit of a little role of med tape, which actually
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: doubles as just general purpose tape. Yeah, like a little
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: teeny roll of med tape, probably ten feet of it. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: I think that's the biggest thing that I think I
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: could control. Is you get in situations where you know,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: you could get an infection from a after cleaning an
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: animal or you know. But beyond that, I don't know.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: I don't carry much else. Don't care like an extra
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: lighter you have, like, oh no, I I carry a
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: couple of lighters. I always have one on me and
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: I always have one in my pack. Yeah, yep. And
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: what what other kind of stuff like that? You bring matches?
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: Just lighters? I do just bring lighters to bring fire
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: starter material, I do, yep, yep, So you know, and
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: it kind of depends year to year, but uh, typically
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: some of like a vassline coated cotton ball or um
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: some sort of gel. You know, you can buy different stuff.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: I play around with different things, but you don't have
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: a few of those, and um, trying to think of
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: what else I started using that. I take one of
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: the dirt myths chew tins and feel it full of
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: vassline coated cotton balls, because one the vassiline could be
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: good for chap lips or any kind of other problem.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: Uh to the t s A, guys, don't steal it
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: because you're not flying around with flammable stuff and burns
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: like the Dickens man. Yeah, the cotton ball impregnated with vassilin.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: That's what I found too. I was really surprised. Yeah,
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: so I think, you know, that's probably the most important
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: stuff of the situations I see myself getting into is
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: you know, being able to keep down and infection of
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: some sort or you know, being able to get warm.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: You know, you look at the number of people that
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: die of hypothermia or get into a bad situation because
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: of that, and you know, probably one of the highest
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: killers of you know, guys being out in the back country.

- 1:18:13Speaker 1: other night, do Is tell me that he he takes
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: a roast right, takes a venison roast, two pound venison roast,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: and sue vieds that thing okay to one third. Then
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: he freezes it. Then he pulls it out to sear
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: it because he's like, when it's frozen in the middle,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: you can see the living but Jesus out of that
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: thing and gets like a bark on it that you
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: wouldn't believe, and then sets it out because it's getting
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: pretty hot, and sets it out and lets it rest,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: and eventually that thing just comes to the right tempt
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: from his own heat. He's loving to get yours. Visit
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: chef steps dot com slash jewel and use code meat
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: eater to get fifteen bucks off for a limited time
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: that chef steps dot com slash j O U l
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: E code meat eater and I think they had it
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: where it's case sensitive, so run it all upper case.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: A few folks never went to school. That's the big letters.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Jewel perfect food. Every time I heard of a guy
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: hunting doll sheep last year. They had to get flown
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: out for heatstroke. Oh wow, I andn't heard of that. No,
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: it's one or the other man. Yeah, damned if you do.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: Damn if you don't. You know, pride gators on. Yeah,
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: that's what broken. So trying other things that would like
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: there would people regard as as survival gear that you'd
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: bring on say like a like an archery bow hunt
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: or sometime of big time sheep hunt. You know I
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: went hunted. Yeah, I hunted with a guy that didn't
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: know if he was allergic to bees, and we got
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: into a ground nest of wasps be you know, some
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: type of hornet in Alaska, and he got stung seven
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: or eight times. And that was the first time I
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: started thinking about, you know, having something to deal with
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: an EpiPen or what is it you know, ben at
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: drill or you know something. Oh, I carry it, that's
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: their thing, man. I carry an assortment of meds, but
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: just single like single, this single that. Yeah, you know,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: a couple little like a handful of ivy profen. Yeah,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: oh anti diar reel, you gotta have that. I haven't
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: brought that. That's a brilliant A good point. They're about
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: they're about a tenth the size of a dime. I
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: think that's a good one. That. Yeah, they are actually
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: small even for a pill, you know. But like, yeah,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: I think I carry probably I probably have four of
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: my kid, Yeah, because that'll slow you down to carry
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: traditional compass, I don't. That's like total ship hits the fan, right, yeah,
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: or you're hunting like out on the tunder or something
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: where it's hard to tell what the what. But in
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: the mountains, it's like the navigation is so different because
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: it's just because you have such start topography to kind
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: of help you figure out what's the what you do.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: If you go one and all for Cariboo, you know,
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: you could like now you quickly have no idea what's
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: going on, especially fog rolls in that type of thing,
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: you know, and when you're in the mountains, if you're
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: in that kind of country, if the fog rolls in,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: you want to be able to see where you're going.
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: You might get yourself into spot you can't get out
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: of or you can't get down through. So yeah, no,
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: I haven't. I haven't carried one. I have one of
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: those little micro compasses. It's in my survival kit along
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: with I think there's still an emergency blanket in there.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: I've got a piece of paper and in a small
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: pencil in there. There's a roll of duct tape in there,
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: one of those like rolls. It's like your pinky. I
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: gave up on emergency blankets, especially like sheep hunting. You
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: just can't leave your pack. No, you can't leave your
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: pack mm hmm, because as you got it, you're so vulnerable.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: It's you can't be going off for like a day hunt,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: you know, because you don't have an extra thing anyway.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: It's like the things is always with you, you know. Yeah,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: you know. Another good one is I carry a small
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: roll of guerrilla tape neither my ice ACKs or my
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: my walking stick, you know. And and a little bit
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: of electrical tape too, but that guerrilla tape. And I'm
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: sure lots of duct tapes the same way, but the
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: guerrilla tape seems to have a little bit more gummy
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: on it, and it's worked well to be able to
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: seal up pants when you know, you know, like tore
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: home my pants or my gators and you massage that
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: in there and hit it with the lighter a couple
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: of times and get hot and yeah it'll it'll seal
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: up a lot. But I carry those that what are
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: those patches of circle patches for the therm arrest And
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: then yeah, the name of the tape is it's the
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: greatest stuff in the world. Man. It comes these a
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: weird little roles. Is it a k isn't it? You
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: don't know it, man, you have to look it up now.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: It's basically like, yeah, it's like you're at the outer
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: textile of a rain jacket with some but you can
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: buy two inch circles of it. Yeah, it's about his
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: bulky is cutting two inch circle out of a piece
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: of printer paper. But it's the perfect patch. Yeah, that'd
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: be great patch, sleeping bag, patch, therm arrest, Yeah, patch anything.
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: I don't know, actually run a therm arrest. You bring
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: a sleeping pad, yeah, yeah, I'm not that tough. Yeah.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: I got like a little Nemo blow up sleeping pad.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: I bring it. Yeah. Well, and and when it gets cold,
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: I mean that's boy it is, yeah, sleeping on cold ground.
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: So first, yeah, so for a sleep system, Yeah, I
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: go tent and I've messed around all kinds of stringing
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: tarps up with strings and stuff. But it's like, which
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: is great until things are nasty or until you're stuck
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: in the fog for days on end. Yeah, I use
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: a tent. I use an inflated a very lightweight inflatable
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: insulated pad, and I use a sleeping bag that is
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: five or ten degrees lower than what I expect the
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: lows to be. I never like gamble on good weather
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: with a sleeping bag, because once you get tired and
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: you're just not getting good sleep and you're cold all night,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: it just affects your whole game, it does. Yeah, So
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: something like this, I'll probably like you know, like like
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: say like an archery l Cohn or you know, August
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: Sheep or whatever. I'd probably bring like a fifteen degree bag. No.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: One that is probably gonna I'm probably gonna be sleeping
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: with a zipper open. Yeah, well, there isn't that much
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: weight difference between the fifteen and you know even a
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: thirty and what six eight don'ts is? And I owned
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: so many sleeping bags right now, it's like kind of ridiculous.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: That's what makes me have like I used to have
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: all sleep like when I was younger. You said, oh, bag,
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: it's a bit of bag on everywhere you went. Yeah,
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: you know. Now I'm like, who do I want? You know,
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: I can get right down to the degree, you know,
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: and it's kind of annoying, right and look at Yeah
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: you're Montana September sheet punt zero or fifteen for you,
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: I'll take a fifteen. You take a tent or no tent?
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I always take a tu Yeah, new Stone
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: glacier tent will be yeah, new Stone Glacier tent. But
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: that's a two man tent. It is a two man
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: tent and it's lighter than my one man so what yeah, yeah,
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: right right there close. So you air because I I
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: put I put a My one man is a little
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: bit modified because I put a stove jack in it,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: so it bumped it up over the weight. But so
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: you air on the side of heavy duty tent, I do.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: I had a couple of bad experiences and um, not
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: as bad as it could have been. But you know,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: that's that's a game change. It seemed that that that,
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: to me in a couple of situations, was the last
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: lifeline that if you know, if you're out there by
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: yourself and you're in a miserable miserable storm and you
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: don't have shelter. You know, hype a thermia is you
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: can die. Yeah, it's gonna happen. You bring a book
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: I have in the past. Yeah, yeah, I actually hadn't
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: thought about that this time. We got stuck hunting sheep
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: one time in the fox and I was some I
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: want to snow it after the fog. My brother had
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: a book and we cut that book in thirds because
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: there's three of us. We cut that book in thirds
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: because it was his book, his book. He got to
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: read the first part first, but like the other people
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: had to start like either the second third or middle third,
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: and we swapped that book around. Everyone read that book.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: It was like a biography of the first superintendent of
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: the Nali National Part. Not a great book, some good
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: stories in there. Um in that book, they're always out
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: hunting bears to get bear large to make biscuits. I
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: remember thinking that was interesting. But yeah, man, reading material.
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: But now it's just easy to have something not You
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: don't need a big book, you know, you don't have
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: like a sometime to keep you entertaining. Yeah, you can
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: have like a little digital reader. Yeah, and have a
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: lot of stuff on it. Yeah, but it's just someone
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: and then you're like packing stuff just in case you
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: get stuck. Yeah, and that's that was one of the
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: things that I started to look at, is you know,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: on a scale I wouldn't attend can you can you
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: live without it? You know? Or how often are you
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: going to use it? And you know, you you kind
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: of you sign a value to you have this group
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: of equipment here on the table, you don't know whether
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: to put in your pack, and you kind of sign
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: a value to it, and you're like, Okay, now I
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: can quantify whether or not I should take that book
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: or I should take whatever it might be. It falls
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: on this spectrum. Yeah, your shoes being on one end
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: and then a heart and then your book being on
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: the other end of the spectrum of like necessity. Yeah,
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: you know, yeah, it's like tough calls and a lot
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: of times I don't know until the last second, I'll
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: still have like a little bag laying there to the
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: last second and I'm still like in my mind, yeah,
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: kicking it a weighing it out. Yeah, you need to pack,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: like you feel when you're walking back to the strip,
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: you know, when you're just absolutely torn up and you're
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: thinking of all of the ship that you're carrying that
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: you didn't ever touch. You're thinking, next time, I'm not
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: going to do that. I used to and I haven't
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: here in the last few years, but I used to
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: always carry a little tablet with me and and leave
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: it at the strip and kind of go through if
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: there was something, I'd make notes about my trip, you know,
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: when I was waiting to get picked up and say
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: I didn't use this, did use this, could have used that,
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: all those little fine point I see, you'd kind of
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: forget down the road. So that that that also helped
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: to kind of refine the entire gear list program. What
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: do you what do you like for water water purification?
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: I'll say what I like. I'm telling you man, we
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: have just switched let me back up and we're talking
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: about survival stuff. Yeah. I carry a few idine tablets
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: in the little individual packs, right, a few ID one tablets,
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: but we've switched those those uh sterry pens man in
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: for red light. I've never used. It's just like you're going,
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: are you running a palm? No? Oh, you're just going. No,
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: it's drinking just drinking bear shit water. No. No, I
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: haven't done that either. No. I used a pump for
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: a while, and then I had some issues, um wow,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: with silt, and you know, they're kind of cumbersome pain
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: and as you dread it, you're like, oh, man, I
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: gotta go down to the creek in the dark pump
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: and then and then that's all I brought. And then
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: of course the things filled with water and it froze
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: and then you know, cracked, and then it doesn't work,
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: so you get white. You need to get a pen, man, Well,
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: I think I might because all I've been carrying my
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: longer trips is just tablets. Yeah, you don't want to
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: drink all that all the time. Man, this is not
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: good for you know, I figured for fourteen days. Like
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: Steve always says, it ain't gonna be the thing that
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: kills you because you ate drinking eye eyed water. No,
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: it's not gonna be what kills you. And I and
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: I regret saying that it's not good for you because
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: I don't really know, and it's not you're doing a
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: year round for your whole life. However, a starry pen
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: it's the size of, well what it's the size of
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: if you take two fingers and join it up to
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: your other two fingers. Those sons of bitches are the nicest.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: That's a great But that person should get a Nobel
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: prize in backpack. So how do you use it, dude?
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: Do you fill up analogene and then drink through the
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: straw in? No? No, no, no, no, not straws. You
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: fill a bottle up. Oh, they drop in there. Yeah,
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: it's a wand yeah it drops in there. It doesn't
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: drop in there. You wave it in there. Okay, I
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: got you. I'm following what you're saying. Now, it's a
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: it looks like it's like a flashlight, so you can
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: put it right in. It looks like a flash No,
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: it doesn't look like a flashlight. It looks like a
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: flashlight handle, lightsaber, looks like a little miniatu. It's it's
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: a lightsaber that's seven inches long. Okay, you dip your net.
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: However you go about it. You get a bottleful, get
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: a water bottleful, and put that thing in there and
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: wave it around for ninety seconds. Can you throw it
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: and like a hydration bladder? No, I think that we've
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: I've done it. Get and just hope for the best,
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: because it says it basically one. You know, I think
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: you tap it twice for half a leader and tap
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: it once for a full lead. So if you're doing,
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: you know, a gallon hydration bladder, you know, do it
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: three times and swirl it around and hope you're killing
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: everything in there. Or I guess I'm always running a
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: bladder and analogy. So I would just do my analogy
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: and poured in there and do my analogy. That we're
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: opening up another question now that has to do with water.
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: So you're running tablets. Do you run the double tablet
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: where you do the iodine, then you do the thing
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: that takes away the taste of the iodine and just
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: running the iodine. Yeah, I started bringing those. You like them? Yeah?
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: I like them. It just takes a little bit of
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: the taste away. Okay, So I have that, I have
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: my sterry pen. I bring a water bottle and then
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: I bring a a bladder that like the MSR bladders
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: because then you can go down and get a heap
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: and helping the water, especially in sheep country. Yeah man, yeah, dude,
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: you're like two thousand feet above the wall. And that's
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: that's what I do too, is I carry they're the
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: I have the two lead ones. I carry two of
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: the two lead ones, and Platypus makes them and they're
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: just a couple ounces. They're the super lightweight plastic stuff. Yeah,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: they have to guess the fails man well, but I
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: don't have to use them that often, you know. I'm
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: talking about the MSR ones that are like almost like
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: a like a fabric. Yeah. Yeah, but I just carry
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: these ones to carry extra water. So say, for example,
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: if I'm going into a spot where I don't think
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: that there's gonna be water, I'll have my regular hydration
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: bladder and then I'll have either one or two of these,
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: so you know, I can take six eight liters of
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: water up above tree line if you if you don't
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: think that you're gonna have water up there, so you
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: use a hydration bladder in your pack. No, I never
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: put it in my pack. I put it in the
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: lid because you can't be doing that if you're in
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: a place where you can't afford to have your stuff
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: at all wet. Well, and it just in my experience,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: caused nothing but issues because as the water bladder starts
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: to get smaller, you lose your compression. Things shift it
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: pinches the hose or it pinches off the you know,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: you can't tighten the pack down super freezes. The hose freezes.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: So that's the other thing. As soon as there's snow
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: on the ground and I leave the I don't bring
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: a bladder anymore. It's travel I carry eating snow, milk drink. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: I swapped. I swapped the bladder for an extra canister
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: of fuel and so you know, just you know, stop,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: heat up some water, get at my water bottle and
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: keep rolling. You only do that a couple few times.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: Do you like those plastic platypus ones? Well, I like
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: them because I can carry extra water. I won't be
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: I I never use them as a as a daily Yeah,
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: as your daily. I don't have a hose hook to them.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: They are just water. And then they laughed for that.
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you can't carrying around because in some areas,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: I'll like have my water bubble. I'll also fill up
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: the MSR jug the ms R and put that in
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: my backpack. Yeah. Depending on what your thing is going
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: on with water and water could be tough. Oh that
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: can ruin it. Huh. What do you like for a stove?
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: I got so many different stoves, man, and then the
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: pilots like like the bush pilots now not like in
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: the canisters. Has move things back? Yeah, because he used
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: to use like slot stoves, you know, then went to
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: canister stoves. But now no one wants to fly the canisters. Yeah,
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: so it's like back to slot stoves. Now. Well I
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: heard that slut. Oh well, you know, like my optimist
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: stove you can burn diesel on aviation fuel. Yeah, it's
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: not my terms, Cora McCarthy's term. Got it. What are
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: you packing for a stove? It depends on the time
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: of year of the hunt. Um, so I say, on
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: on this hunt, I'm trying to take virtue. All the
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: food doesn't have to be cooked, you know, maybe it
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: needs to be rehydrated. So you know, you need to
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: rehydrate it at noon for it to be ready in
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: the evening, but not counting on cooking and boiling water
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: every day, so then you can go lighter on your fuel. Um,
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: I'm using the msru is it is it the dragonfly
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: on what's that one called? It's just that whisper light.
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: Whisper light. Yeah, it's just that that's one. It is
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: that little triangular stap plastic container. Yeah. Yeah, well I
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: had that one too, and then they make they actually
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: came up with a smaller version of that, and I
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: just it just hits on a canister or you run, no,
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: it fits on a canister. Oh you're thinking of the
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: pocket rocket. Yeah, you're right. Yeah, that's nice little stone
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: it is. That's a great little show. So I'll carry that,
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: um one or two cans of fuel of the you know,
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: the smaller four ounce ones and um and just not
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: count on cooking much. You know, maybe if you need
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: to melt snow for water or something, so you'll go
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: the whole day and not eating anything warm. Yeah, most
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: of the time. Most of the time. I'm not into
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: that scene, man. Yeah, So tell me what you're instead
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: of having a house at night, what are you eating? Um? Well,
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: I carry a lot of bars, um, you know, and
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: there's a there's a lot of different things. And there's
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: a few of the mountain houses too that if you
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: get water in them early enough that it'll just be
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: like cold leftovers by the end of the night, you know,
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: so by the time you're ready to eat it, so
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: you're just start thinking about dinner at noon. Throw some
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: water you can. Yeah, you can do that. Um and uh,
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: you know you can do it with different ramen. You
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: can do the same thing or instant rice. It just
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: takes longer. I never thought about that with the house
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: Do you take a house packet and put cold water there?
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: Some of them? Some of them you can. The chicken
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: arryaky rice is the one that I carry. There is
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: also a that is that like all you can find
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: that information online or have you just learned that over experience? No,
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: they were just the ones that I liked and you know,
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: just tried it. You cold oatmeal in the morning, m yeah, yeah,
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: well a lot of I actually, I mean I have
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: in the past. I don't carry any oatmeal anymore. You
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: don't drink coffee, no goose shots with double caffeine. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: I don't know. I just try not to cook very
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: much because I found that cooking in the darks of
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: pain in the assid it always I don't know, I
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: would rather just be going to sleep because you know,
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: typically by the time it's dark you know what in Montana,
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: you know, nine ten o'clock. Well it's not quite that
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: late maybe in Alaska. But point being, as you know,
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: rather be climbing into the tent. And so then if
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: you're cooking during the you know, in the evening hours
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: before it gets dark, that's that's prime time to be
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: behind the glass. So I just found it was easier
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: to you know, try to get that stuff taken care
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: of dur in the middle of the day and maybe
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: it's not as you know, not as good a hund
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: and then then the same thing in the morning. Ah,
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: get up, throw something in your pocket and get after
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: it wherever, get to your glassing spot, you know, post
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: figuring out. Yeah, breakfast is pretty easy to eat that way,
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: like while you're glass and start snacking, you know, next thing,
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: you know, what's new yea, Yeah, I just try to
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: make it as low maintenance as possible. Man, you wouldn't
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: like our set up. We got mayonnaise, mustard, sandwich, thins
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: ham cheese. Yeah that sounds nice. I like, yeah, man,
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: I like I like to try to get the but
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: I like to try to get the food in. Man. Yeah,
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: there's certain I know, there's like there's certain things where
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: I think everybody breaks in their own direction when it
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: comes to like what what warrants being carried, you know,
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: and what's enjoyable because ultimately we go out there because
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: we want to have fun, and so if somebody isn't
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: having fun, because you know, they just yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: it goes psychologically. Man. That's kind of my happiest part
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: of the day. Actually, Yeah, my happiest part of the
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: day having some house. Yeah. And it's not always that way,
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: especially the elk hunting in Montana or you know where
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: you have that stuff. But on the longer hunts, the
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: sheep hunts, you know, when the weather it's a little
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: bit more of the fall and not winter. I don't know,
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: that's just the warm meal hasn't been as much of
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: a priority. Yeah, you do, you bring any you don't
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: bring any kind of fruit or anything, right, apples and
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: stuff because dried you know, a lot of you know,
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: a lot of the stuff has dried fruit in it. Um. Yeah.
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: And there's some really good bars out there. If you
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: guys have ever had the Green Belly meals, No, Man,
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: we've got every barn the planet, but I never heard
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: of that one or thought I had every every barn
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: the planet. I'll tell you they're a ship. They're so good. Um,
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: call Green Belly. Order them online. Order them online. Yeah,
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: the guy runs a really cool business and uh, well
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: we'll pull out like we'll have an assortment. Man, we
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: got like kind pro I can't name them all, tons
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: of them. Well, these zones are old schoolers. Yeah. They
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: come with two bars in each pack and there's six
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: hundred calories and the guy went through for the two
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: of them. It is so I mean, it's it's a
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: it's a meal replacement as much as it is, you know,
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: a snack, but um, they are they are balanced fats,
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: proteins and carbs across the board, and so it's a
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: really well rounded and he has a cool story on
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: the background. I'll probably butcher it if I try to
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: tell you, yeah, because you know what, I was really
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: excited about it. But if there's a if it's a
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: bar that has like the story written on the bag
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: and it's it's nauseatingly cute. No no, no, it's not here.
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: He's an ultra light guy. Okay, because now and then,
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: like you'll read like every guy that came out with
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: the bar, it feels like he's a put like a
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: very cute see like why I make these bars or
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: the marketing team that he picked up. Yeah, and so
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: we'll sometimes sit around we don't have any books to
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: be able to read those bar bags. And now it's
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: like it's like, oh my god, it's like a whole
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: it's a whole other type of literature. Man. Yeah, it
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: all started one old mom. I would like, just give
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: me the bar bro so, no coffee, no vas, drink
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: a little tea at night. Um, no, you're running cold.
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: You're cold, camping cold, camping tough, little bastard, because it's
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: not it's it's really not that bad, you know. Into it,
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: you're like, yeah, that's what I was gonna. I was
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: just gonna bring that point up. You quickly get used
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: to whatever situation you made. You get used to it.
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: But at the same time you already bringing some fuel anyway.
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: It's like a dinky bit more to be able to
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: warm up your food at night. Yeah. Yeah, And not
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: to say that I you know that I don't or
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: that you know, if time allows that, you're in a
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: good you know spot, but I plan on not doing it. Yeah.
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: It's kind of as I go through a lot of times,
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: we'll eat house, um right, pre evening glass session. Yeah,
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: an early dinner like you might hit some like four o'clock.
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: You might hit a four o'clock house, right, Yeah, and
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: then yeah, like you said, it's late. It's kind of
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: shady to go to bed on a full belly, so
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: that way, and then you just have like you know,
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: maybe another half a bar on your right at the tent. Yeah,
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: we'll go out for an evening glass and session and
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: actually grab some water, grab a stove, get up there
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: and get settled in, have a sack of food, and
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: then kind of wrap up your couple hours of prime time.
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: Then you just roll down and have a candy bar
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: or something to go to bed. Yeah. That's some pleasurable
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: evenings man. It is, you know, sitting behind the glass
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: with with you know, your food and steaming up the limbs. Yeah,
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: knowing that you're not going anywhere until like the one
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: I at ten times, when all of a sudden you
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: find what you're looking for and okay, drop everything. Yeah.
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: So do you, um, when you're going on a long hunt,
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: what do you what's your theory on binoculars and spot
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: and scope? I think it depends on the country. So
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: when when I was hunting Alaska guy, I went very
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: light weight on both, so I was ah, I wasn't
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: as concerned with glass in Alaska as I am here
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: in Montana on these hunts, just because picking out a
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: white sheep on black rock is different than it is. Yeah,
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: it is, and it's a little bit different. And and
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: you know, uh, I didn't feel confident shooting a ram
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: on age, so I did. I didn't feel like I
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: was going to be in a spot trying to count rings, um,
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: And so yeah, I I would bring something lighter that
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: was middle of the road on a spotting scope and
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: just some lightweight binoculars. I had some little like a
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: pocket binoculars and um, and you know, it was just
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: enough to scan around as you moved, and it was
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: just you know, it's just a different program. You're not
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: trying to pick sheep out of the timber. You're you're
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: you're trying to make sure you know that you don't
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: make a mistake when you come up over a ridge,
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: so you know, a quick scan to make sure that
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: you know you're not gonna be exposed. And and then
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: once you got in a spot, your glassing was more organized,
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: you had more time, you were getting a spot, you
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: set up your spotting scope. You know, it's just much
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: different than hunting through Montana, where your view is changing
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: all the time and you're you're kind of always seemed
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: to behind your glass make sure you don't blow something out,
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: and so you know, but that being said, in Montana, um,
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: this time, I'll be carrying a swarrow eighty five and
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: you know, that's that's what I've carried on these hunts.
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: And then go a little bit lighter on a big
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: bruiser of a spot, in the big bruiser of a
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: spotting and that's where I'm spending the majority of my
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: time as I set the spotting scope to glass. And
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: then really you just one eyeball it all day long.
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: Yeah you don't get well, yeah, it gets old. But
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: you know there's don't you feel like you'd be more
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: effective just just running like a pair of tens or
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: twelves and just picking off movement with a bigger field
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: of view and more comfortable, less eyestrain. Yeah, yeah, I
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: think when things are moving you probably would be. But
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: the problem is you spend a lot of the day
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: looking in spots where you're just trying to pick out
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: anything and ear you know, a rump. You know, you're
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: trying to find bedded animals as you move down through um,
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: you know, say spend a lot of time in the timber.
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: And so yeah, you're absolutely right. If if if you're
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: glassing for things that are feeding in the evening and
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: they're in the morning, something that's on the move, and
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: you're trying to cover a lot of country, I think
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: behind the perpon oculars would be way better. But and
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: and it depends on the distance too. You know a
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: lot of those canyons, you you might be glass and
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: you know, close to a mile away trying to pick
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: something out. And that's tough when you uh, when you
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: were hunting doll sheep a lot were you did you
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: spend a lot of time or did you just kind
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: of skim through everything? I skim. I think that was
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: the thing that I really liked about it was that
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: it was it was a higher it was a lot
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: higher paced. You know, you're you're just covering ground, and
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: you know that was the key, covering ground, get into
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: places that you can glass, you know, move to the
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: next spot opposed to you know, when you're hunting these
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: animals that are in the timber, you'll walk right by.
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: I proved that. Yeah, so you know that story. Well,
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: the same area I'm going into right now is the
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: first place I hunted ten years ago, and I didn't
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: see a sheep, and you know, and that's because I
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: was I. I just hunted it like you know, like
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: we did doll sheep. You know, try to get elevation,
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: cover as much country as you can, spend the time
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: through the glass and just systematically moved through areas. But
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: you couldn't. You had to spend a lot more time
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: in one spot. I think if you if you want
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: to find animals, and so you're saying you proved it
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: by not finding what I proved it by not finding anything. Yeah, no,
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: now knowing that they're probably were they were there, Oh
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: I'm sure, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm sure I walked by sheep.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: How many? Uh what's your thoughts on a cubic inches
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: for backpack because you got a plan on being able
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: to pack that sheet back out? Yeah, well I think
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: that that's that was kind of where my designs came
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: from for backpacks, was not having to figure that out.
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: So size your bag to the size of your gear.
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: You don't you have to size it to the gear
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: plus food if you don't want to because you can
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: carry the gear in the load shelf, but now you
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: always have the designated spot for the load shelf for
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: the meat for your pack out meat and horns. So
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: you know, instead of having to carry a seventy cubic
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: kinch bag, now maybe you only need to carry four
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: thousand cubic you know, to fit all of your gear
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: and food. And then you always know that you have
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: that three thousand cubic inches a space designated when you
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: separate the back away from the frame in the load shelf,
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: and you don't have to worry about it. And you know,
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: on the flip side, you can do the same thing
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: which I've done, is to carry all the food in
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: the load shelf in the in the same bag that
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: you carry meat out in. And you know, as soon
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: as you get to camp, everything is organized. You just
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: pulled the bag out, take what you need, keep moving.
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: Or you know, in in wilderness areas where you're required
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: to sling the food in the tree, everything's already organized.
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: You just pull it out, hut it up the tree,
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: keep moving. Do you not bring a um? Do you
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: not bring a trash bag liner? Because I don't? Yeah,
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: because man like nothing keeps blood like there's no short
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: of that nothing, He's blood out of everything. No, but
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: that's why if you have it in the load shelf,
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: you never worry about just let it go. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: I mean that, and that's that's part of the design
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: is the fact that the the load cell that you
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: that you put the meat in, the blood can drain,
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: so you don't get you know, especially in Alaska, I
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: mean if you have sixties seventy eighty degree days, you
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: get that coagulated blood in the bottom that the meat
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: is just sitting and it's constantly moist, you know, just
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: great place to grow bacteria and you know, taint meat.
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: So you're allowing the meat to drain, just drain out
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: the bottom of the bag. And then you know, in
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: between the bag and the frame, the back side of
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: the bag is hydrophobic material xpacts, so you don't ever
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: get any migration of the you know, have the blood
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: or any sort of anything that can contaminate your your gear.
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: So now you don't need that. Before you started the
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: Stone Glacier, what was the backpacks you were messing around with? UM.
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: I played with quite a few different ones, mostly the internals,
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: so you know, I had some arc tereks I had
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: some north face but just regular mountaineering bags. But you know,
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: it was it wasn't long before I figured out that
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: they just didn't quite have enough stability. You know. One,
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: once you got a hundred plus pounds in them, you
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: get a lot more roll and shift out. They didn't
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: have as many compression straps as the hunting packs had,
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: but they were lightweight, they were comfortable, and so that's
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: what I did a lot of a lot of hunting with.
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: But there you're back in the same spot. Now you're
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: putting the meat in there and right in there. So yeah,
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: it creates a tough situation. Yeah, that's where you see
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: the limitation of the pack because on those packs, you
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: know what you're gonna be carrying, and you know it's
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: only gonna get lighter. Yep, as you eat your food.
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: There's never the thing of like, oh man, you know, yeah,
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: what could happen if you get lucky? Yeah, and how
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: that's gonna go? Yeah, and you're like trying to tie
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: jump to the outside and just yeah, yeah it is
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: a mess. That can be a mess. Yeah you don't
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: but yeah, so that that's kind of the point is,
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: is you know, size the bag to the gear and
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: your food what you need at the time, and then
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: let the low shelf silk everything else up. Yeah. How
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: many how many rounds you bring with you? I usually
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: bring about ten, so you're pretty heavy on rounds. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: and no, I think that we all we all realize
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: that we run thirteen. I think there's just three because
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: you got a few. You got a couple of the magazine.
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: Three in the magazine and you grab one of those. Yeah,
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: you grab a sleeve. And that's a really good point.
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: I think we might have talked about this last time,
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: and I think I might have said third team because
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember if I was counting the ten
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: total or ten and then three. So yeah, but I'm less.
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: I usually just carry too whatever my gun is. I
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: have like two mag's full. I like my gun full,
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: and then I'll have enough in my pocket to reload.
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: Here's my thinking. My thinking is that what's always in
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: my head, it never doesn't happen, is that you're gonna
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: fall bad m hm and be like, man, I gotta
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: fire a couple rounds to check my zero. YEA have
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: a problem there. You need to fire a couple more
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: and then you're gonna have to shoot some rocks in
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: front of a grizzly bear to scare them off, and
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: then you're gonna be like, dude, I only got two rounds.
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: What if something goes wrong? Right? So that's kind of like, oh,
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: how I think about it? And I always like trying
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: to keep them, always put them a couple different places.
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: Like I'll put a couple of my magazine, I stick
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: one of my binal harness, and then I put my
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: other one somewhere else. So I sort of have like
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: like a system, like a redundancy system. If I remember, right,
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: you're the one that you're running three wind right for
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: sheep ill At the time, I was running a three
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: seventy eight weather be in a Flaska. So if you
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: lightened up your yeah, yeah, I have a I have
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: a three weather be now a lot of medicine for
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: a sheep it is. But boy, you know, with with
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: these v l d s and just the accuracy and
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: you know the lack of wind drift and the energy
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: that it carries down range. Right, Yeah, you're very shot
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: long range. Yeah, I mean I wouldn't I wouldn't shoot
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: too far. Uh, you know, conditions would have to be
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: just right. But what's too far? I think it depends
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: on the conditions. Now, in the perfect conditions, you're feeling good.
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: I think in the perfect conditions, no wind, you know,
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: I feel I feel confident out to six hundred yeah, um,
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: you know I've shot help at that range before the
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: sheep I got down there before it was at four d.
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: All confident with that, so yeah, I mean, if everything's right,
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: but I think that that's where it plays in. You know,
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: you have to make that call. What are the gear
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: categories we got for like bagpack, hunts man, Uh, we
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: haven't touched on track and poles? You carry track and pole?
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: I do? I I carry it that um Petzel used
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: to make us. They call it a snow scopic, so
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: it's yeah, yeah, I carry that and then typically one
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: trucking pole, so you carry that snowstopic like this even
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: now yeah down here, yeah, well in sheep hunts I do.
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: It's it's just so handy to have around, you know,
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: just because you know clearing out rocks are trying to
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: get a campsite ready or um you know, if I mean,
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: if you just find if you can find a wet
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: spot in the hill where you where you have some
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: moisture coming out, you can dig in there and get
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: a puddle and just you know, come back a couple
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: of hours later, and you know a lot of times
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: you'll have you'll have water that you can get to.
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: So I just just having that little bit of an
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: ice axe, is it's I found it a real useful tool. Mhmm.
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: You just told in your hand. Yeah, you just use
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: it just like a just like a trucking. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: it's funny you mention that because I remember like hunting
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: sheep digging through rock piles trying to find water. You
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: can hear it, Yeah, the cat drives you crazy, man.
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: You can hear it down there somewhere, you know, but
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: you just can't do it out you can't get to. Yeah.
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: It's kind of maddening, man, because you're like, dude, we
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: could save a lot of walk and if we can
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: find where this water is deep underground. Yeah, Curts telling
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: me when we shut down for a second earlier, Um
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: about a good little trick with track and poles. Is
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: taking this double sided velcro. It's got like the hook
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: and loop on one side and then the no, I'm sorry,
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: that is the hook right is the hard part and
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: the loop is the soft part. But anyways, just wrapping it,
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: you know, like two thirds of the way up, wrapping
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: your two poles together and then just exit them and
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: unbelievable shooting rests for shooting rest yeah, yeah, you bring
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: your tripod. I do. Yeah, but my tripod you know,
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: it's kind of back to the same thing that we
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: were talking about with layers and um. You know, my
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: tripods set up with pick tenny rail so I can
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: put my I can shoot off of it. It'll touch
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: to have a pic tiny rail on my on my rifle.
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: I have one on my spotting scope. I have a
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: little adapter for my camera, so you know, everything will
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: slide right into the one piece. So and it's the
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: it'll adjust from nine inches up to fifty four inches,
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: so you know, it gives you a wide range. What's
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: the tripod way, it's right at two pounds. Yeah, my
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: tripods happy. But I little bit man. Yeah, I think
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: that that's and that's a tough thing because you know,
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: my the spotting scope weighs over four pounds I think
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: four pounds four ounces or something, So it's a heavy
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: spotting scope for a small tripod, so you can't get
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: it too high in the air. But you know, typically
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: in those conditions you're glassing, you're you're on an angled piece,
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: so you know, on an angled hill, so you can
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: set the tripod right between your legs and it's an
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: angled eye piece, so it just sits right here in
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: your chest, so you know, it's not you don't have
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: to get it up real high. So it's a different
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: program than I think. If so, if you're out, you know,
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: trying to find meal here and had to get up
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: above the stage rush and had to have a tall spotting, let'scope, right,
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: you don't get any shake, you feel without lightweight tripod,
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: not not if I keep it low. If I keep
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: it low, and and you know normally you're kind of
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: just right there on top of it, so you're blocking
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: the wind. But yeah, you know that's it's not as
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: stable as you know, carrying a four or five pound tripod,
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: that's for certain. Yeah, I think my head and legs
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: come in right just shy at four pounds? Are they
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: really that heavy? Yeah? How how the hell heavy is mine?
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: I wonder? Is this is roughly the same? Might be
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: a little bit more, man, I like that thing. Yeah,
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: I love it. It's quality life issue. Man, Let's see,
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: that's it. That's it like being able to do some
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: power glass and you know, or just like everything's right.
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah. If your glass is not steady, it's
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: hard to hard to stay in the game the game.
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: Do you bring a Do you bring um a tart
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: beside your tent? No? I don't. Sometimes we do, but
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: for this I wouldn't. Yeah know, because for this, I
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: feel like the tent is always going to be with
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: me or pretty darn close. Usually the tarp combs with me.
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: If we're making like a base camp, I know we're
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: gonna be out for the day. Yeah. Does the guy
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: that you checked, the pilot we're flying in with he
- 2:00:16Speaker 1: doesn't let you have canisters? Or does he does? He does?
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: How could that be like a thing that they probably
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: should't talk about because maybe he's not fools too. I
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: don't know the f A rules. I don't know either.
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: You bring pepper spray? No? And you're in grizz country wow?
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: And no pistol either. Oh you have your rife? Have
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: my rifle? Yeah? No spray? No spray? Times are changing, man, Yeah? Yeah,
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: don't you feel like they're getting thicker by the day
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: around here. Yeah. Yeah, it's uh. I think we proved
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: that every fall with all the encounters that happened just
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: ending around Gallaton County doing that. The Madison's h multiple
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: encounters every year. When that big sumby comes from you,
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: I guess, yeah, your rivals gonna leaning against a tree
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: man way leaving against. I never leaved behind. I got
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: caught in Alaska one time, going down to the river
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: to wash fought out. Yeah, I got called by bear. Yeah,
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: turned around and there was a bear on the other
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: side of my tent, probably forty yards away. Yeah. My
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: rifle was laying up there. Yeah. Luckily he just kept
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: on no, he while he dropped down and started eight.
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: I mean, he wasn't charging. I don't know what he
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: was doing, but he was running at me, and he
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: was looking at me. And then he stopped at about
- 2:01:39Speaker 1: twenty yards and as soon as he ran towards me.
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: I know, they say you're not supposed to run, but
- 2:01:43Speaker 1: I you know, I ran towards my rifle. You know,
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: they're like, there was only a couple of things. I
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: was running towards him. He was running towards me, and
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: he stopped about twenty yards and stood up, and right
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: about time I got to my rifle and he was
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: just trying to catch when. I just don't think he
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: knew what was going on, but there was no doubt
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: that had he chose that he wanted me, he would
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: have had me. And uh, yeah, I just kind of
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: felt lucky figured to keep it a little closer. That's
- 2:02:11Speaker 1: the point of the story. My brothers were hunting doll
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: sheet and uh, They're sitting there by their tent and
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: all of a sudden, up over the hill comes tearing
- 2:02:21Speaker 1: at him. A wolf comes tearing at him, like, you know,
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: first like what in the world, but then like over
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: the hill because he's running because it's a grizz hot
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: on his trail. Man. And then they both saw him
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: and spun off in different directions. But yeah, that stuff
- 2:02:37Speaker 1: can catch you by surprise, man. Yeah, for sure. So
- 2:02:41Speaker 1: no pistol, no spray. I don't you know, for many, many,
- 2:02:44Speaker 1: many years I did the same thing. But now after
- 2:02:47Speaker 1: having like after you know, now I just don't think
- 2:02:50Speaker 1: that I don't think that the rifles really I think
- 2:02:53Speaker 1: there's certain times when the rifles reliable. But when you
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: sit there and you got a load of meat and
- 2:02:57Speaker 1: you got your rifle tied to the back of your
- 2:02:59Speaker 1: back backpack. But you might as well not even have
- 2:03:01Speaker 1: that something, bitch man. Yeah, it doesn't happen like that.
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: It's it's generally in my hand most times. You use
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: a sling though, Yeah, yeah, they use a sling sometimes. Yeah. Yeah,
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: but if it's a tight area, you should have it
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: in my hands, you know, if I can't see, if
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: I can't it's dark because of getting mal scratched. I
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: don't know, it's like a security blanket. Yeah. No, I
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: know what you're saying. Just happy you're walking around with
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: it in your hand. Anything we haven't touched on bad
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: country long hunt gear. Uh, you know. The only other
- 2:03:40Speaker 1: thing that I was thinking about is just how when
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: you're hunting with a partner, how your your gear. Your
- 2:03:47Speaker 1: gear choice can change because me and my bro we'll
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: each have to only carry half. One guy carries the
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: steaks and poles and the other guy carries the tent body. Yeah,
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: which is nice. One spot and scope, one spotting scope exactly,
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: one dry pod, one stove. Yeah. I don't know if
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: I'm brave enough to do one rifle. We've done it.
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: We've done it. It's like, give me that rifle my turn. Yeah, no,
- 2:04:15Speaker 1: we've done that. One guy has one rifle. You don't
- 2:04:20Speaker 1: think anything about it. Yeah, well no, I know who.
- 2:04:24Speaker 1: Uh my dad had a cheap tag last year and
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: we had talked about it and he said, I'll just
- 2:04:29Speaker 1: I'll just bring my rifle. You don't have to carry yours.
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: And I said, I'll just bring it just in case.
- 2:04:33Speaker 1: Where we got in the hell of a snowstorm and
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: we thought we knew were these sheep where And when
- 2:04:39Speaker 1: we finally came up, they had moved up closer to us,
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: and it happened really quick, and he took his he
- 2:04:45Speaker 1: took his his rifle off, his slang and his scope
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: caps were gone and it was just plugged filled with
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: snow and everything was and unfortunately I had my rifle,
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: everything was set handed it to him. Yeah he had
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: the shot, but we had just his rifle. I don't
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: know that it would have happened. Did you like scope caps?
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: You know? I have I have a scope coat on
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: the mind now new yprene a neoprene because uh, you know,
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: all my scopes have the turrets on them, and so
- 2:05:23Speaker 1: you know, it's just It's just another nice protection you
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: don't accidentally get, you know, anything turned or just kind
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: of tighter program. I've messed around with every I feel
- 2:05:34Speaker 1: like I'm messed around with every scope cap on the plant. Man.
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: I just think a neoprene a neoprene cover. You like
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: the caps, don't you. I've donald you've used them in
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: the past. Um, but yeah, I'm a neoprene scope cover guy.
- 2:05:49Speaker 1: Now I've spent a lot of years like when they
- 2:05:51Speaker 1: first started coming out, you know, and like Butler Creek
- 2:05:54Speaker 1: had those ones and the springs that break and the
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: pins that fall out, and you'll be trying to find
- 2:05:58Speaker 1: the parts yeah uh in the snow or whatever. And
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: now just like it's just like it's like an infallibility
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: to a neoprene cover. Yeah, yeah, there definitely as you know,
- 2:06:09Speaker 1: another nice scope cover that I've used though, is uh
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: night Force sends out. They're kind of almost a rubber
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: one that that goes on and that that's the only
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: single piece one that I've used, And I actually really
- 2:06:23Speaker 1: like that one. Yeah, but I don't I don't know
- 2:06:25Speaker 1: who makes it other than them. I just use the
- 2:06:27Speaker 1: I mean, just like a just a general like vortexes
- 2:06:30Speaker 1: has a general neoprene one you yep, pull over and
- 2:06:33Speaker 1: it's pretty good. Man. You know, for a while, I
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: got so burned out on sculpe covers. We went we'd
- 2:06:38Speaker 1: go down to the hardware store and get like PVC
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: and and caught it. So you had the kind of
- 2:06:44Speaker 1: had the reducer and so you could a POxy in
- 2:06:47Speaker 1: a piece of plexiglass in there and then use bungee cord.
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and then you had like a one pound
- 2:06:55Speaker 1: sculpe cover that was indestructible, man, indestructible. And um brother
- 2:07:00Speaker 1: made up a batch of those. We use those from Wow.
- 2:07:02Speaker 1: And now I just use like the near prent cover
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: and you just gotta be careful not to leave it land.
- 2:07:06Speaker 1: It's actually the kind of thing you can bring too
- 2:07:07Speaker 1: of because like literally ways, I would say, like literally nothing,
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: Yeah they are you could grab you could you could
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: justify sticking the extra one in your kid, yep, your
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: little gear kid, Dude. I'm excited how to go home
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: and go through all my junk. Man, I kind of
- 2:07:23Speaker 1: got a whole day set aside to pack. Something will
- 2:07:27Speaker 1: come up, and I think something will come up when
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: I will get messed up. But right I think it's
- 2:07:31Speaker 1: one of the funnest, funnest portions of you know, kidding
- 2:07:34Speaker 1: ready anticipation, your gear and the planning. If it's not
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: part of this process, as long as it's not rushed,
- 2:07:40Speaker 1: but long as like you got young kids, you can't
- 2:07:42Speaker 1: focus on anything. No, no, it's pretty accurate. Five and seven. Yeah,
- 2:07:47Speaker 1: I got one of each of those. Well five and
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: eight you can't focus. Oh no, it's after bedtime. That's
- 2:07:53Speaker 1: when that happens. Gear the gear messing. Yeah, the gear messing.
- 2:07:59Speaker 1: But when you can do it right, you're not just
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: cramming stuff in a bag. It's pretty fun, man, it is.
- 2:08:03Speaker 1: Get your gear dial you're thinking about it now, Yanni
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: can't really get packed properly because your house is torn
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: and a half. Yeah, well, luckily my little basement corner
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: where my little zone is, um my little man cave
- 2:08:16Speaker 1: zone down there. It's it's it's kept up, it's it's neatness.
- 2:08:21Speaker 1: So I don't think you should call it a man
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: cave because it's functional. Oh, man caves aren't functional. No,
- 2:08:26Speaker 1: it's like place where people go to watch TV. Yeah,
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: I hear you, you're right, But I think originally a
- 2:08:31Speaker 1: man cave was usually in the garage, like that's the
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: original man. Then it became a thing like then man
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: caves got messed up, or man caves also became things.
- 2:08:39Speaker 1: They became places where like you go down to be lazy.
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: It should be a place where you go to like
- 2:08:44Speaker 1: get your stuff dialed. Yeah, right, but it became a
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: thing where you like got big couches and TVs and
- 2:08:51Speaker 1: it's like this a place you got to be lazy
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: while your wife's being lazy upstairs. Yeah, like in your
- 2:08:55Speaker 1: basement or your kids allowed in that room that weird
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: podcasting in U No, Yeah, like that little zone of mine.
- 2:09:05Speaker 1: I mean a lot of it is safety, right, Like
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: they're shipping there that they can get hurt with, you know,
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: sharp things as well as you know other things. But yeah,
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: like they're just not allowed to be in that zone.
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: So that's why it's like the man cave, right, I
- 2:09:22Speaker 1: think you'd call it the man zone. Yeah. But look
- 2:09:27Speaker 1: if my gal, you know, I mean there's a bunch
- 2:09:28Speaker 1: of tools and stuff in there too, So my gal
- 2:09:31Speaker 1: needs anything out of there, She's more than welcome as
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: long as he gets put back in the right spot. Yeah,
- 2:09:36Speaker 1: Because I do a lot of fixing down there too,
- 2:09:38Speaker 1: and one of the kids things breaks. I go to
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: the same zone that I pack in to repair, to
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: glue their ship back together, you know, to fix stuff.
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: But it's kind of like mostly my garage set up,
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: Like I'm not set up for like ranching on old
- 2:09:53Speaker 1: tractors and ship you know what I mean. I'm set
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: up for like working on the outdoor gear. Yeah, I'm
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: like my primary thing, like I'm rigged for gear. Yeah.
- 2:10:01Speaker 1: I can mount a rifle scupe yeah. So yeah, stuff
- 2:10:04Speaker 1: like that. That's saying, you know, I don't have like
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: a three quarter inch drive ratchets down there and stuff
- 2:10:08Speaker 1: like that for you know, like rebuilding some alice chalmers
- 2:10:12Speaker 1: or something. You know, it's just not what I'm it's
- 2:10:14Speaker 1: not where I'm at when it comes to tool and
- 2:10:18Speaker 1: and you're the only guy you know that has a
- 2:10:19Speaker 1: big sewing machine in his gear room. Yeah. Yeah, that's
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: a rarity, it is, that's next level. It is. It's fun.
- 2:10:30Speaker 1: I knew one other guy to add that. I don't
- 2:10:32Speaker 1: know if it was in his man zone, but old man,
- 2:10:36Speaker 1: I hope you're listening. I hope you're still alive. But
- 2:10:38Speaker 1: there's a chance that he might not be alive, but
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: he might be dead. Donnie the wild Man, uh oh,
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: I've heard a lot of stories about this guy. His
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: last name though, it's Yeah, because he sewed into his
- 2:10:48Speaker 1: vast pistol holder. Well you know, it was like a
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: leather jacket, you know, not like a biker, kind of
- 2:10:53Speaker 1: like a biker. Yeah, I guess you could have if
- 2:10:56Speaker 1: you have just seen him Donnie on the street, you
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: could have thought that he was getting rid of jump
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: on a Harley. But yeah, he had all kinds that
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: he had, like a special pocket for like cigarettes, probably
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: had another pocket for the second pack of cigarettes, for
- 2:11:11Speaker 1: a coke can in there, and yeah, for his giant
- 2:11:15Speaker 1: forty four mag He's one of those like I think
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: it was the Rocky Mountain Special, remember that one. It's
- 2:11:20Speaker 1: like the even the cylinder had no grooves cut out
- 2:11:24Speaker 1: of it, so it's like added weight heavy and yeah,
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: you think the pockets sewn in for that thing. Um.
- 2:11:33Speaker 1: But he was like that. He was he was a
- 2:11:35Speaker 1: guy that got like tinkered with stuff. Yeah, you probably
- 2:11:38Speaker 1: would have got along with him. He just like they
- 2:11:40Speaker 1: called him the wild man, right, but I remember him.
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: He was saying at nighttime he would do nothing to
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: prepare for bed. Yeah, he would just lay down a
- 2:11:50Speaker 1: lot of times too. He didn't sleep and wake up
- 2:11:53Speaker 1: and again prepared for bed. He put his cigarette out
- 2:11:59Speaker 1: and lay down and then he way back up and
- 2:12:00Speaker 1: his lighted. Yeah, light, crack of coke go and everything.
- 2:12:07Speaker 1: He would be like, can't use that bunk. Now there's
- 2:12:09Speaker 1: dying bull. There's no ship there, there's no sleep bag. Yet,
- 2:12:12Speaker 1: dying doesn't need any of that stuff. I remember him
- 2:12:14Speaker 1: buying like a brand new Arctic Cat. You know, I
- 2:12:16Speaker 1: don't know how those things are five dollars, right, I
- 2:12:19Speaker 1: don't know how much brand new nice thing. By the
- 2:12:23Speaker 1: time I got to see it in his garage, the
- 2:12:25Speaker 1: seats ripped off. It's been chopped in half. The um
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: he's got like the whole like I don't know what
- 2:12:30Speaker 1: you call it, but like the thing that metal piece
- 2:12:32Speaker 1: that goes around the seat where you like put your
- 2:12:34Speaker 1: feet on and it kind of extends behind the seat,
- 2:12:37Speaker 1: and he's just drilling holes through it because he was
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: lightning the whole thing. So it had a seat that
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: like you could just fit like maybe two people on.
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: Well he cut it down to a seat to fit
- 2:12:47Speaker 1: a half a person. The whole thing was full of holes,
- 2:12:50Speaker 1: you know, and so and he sowed a new leather
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: seat to fit this. You know. So he had skills,
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: but he was the wild man. And did it look
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: good or did it look like someone was happening on
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: look good? Yeah, my old man hung out with guys.
- 2:13:03Speaker 1: They were like they were gear tinkers. But it wasn't
- 2:13:06Speaker 1: like they were trying to make ship light for wanding
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: around in the mountains for a week at a time.
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: They were they were tinkers like um, making your own
- 2:13:14Speaker 1: ice fish and shanties, making your own charcoal grills, you know,
- 2:13:20Speaker 1: but any kind of like building stuff, right, like building
- 2:13:24Speaker 1: outdoor equipment of big ship. So these guys were at
- 2:13:26Speaker 1: the thing where they had like welders and stuff, you know,
- 2:13:29Speaker 1: or smelters or you know, I mean like weird kind
- 2:13:32Speaker 1: of stuff. But there's this thing that makes people want
- 2:13:34Speaker 1: to go and mess with something. I never look at uh,
- 2:13:39Speaker 1: you know, I never look at me like, man, I'm
- 2:13:40Speaker 1: gonna go to devise some new way to like key
- 2:13:44Speaker 1: to ice shanty, right. But I think there's people have
- 2:13:47Speaker 1: a proclivity, right, they have a tendency to want to
- 2:13:49Speaker 1: go jury rig stuff. Do you know that jury rigg
- 2:13:54Speaker 1: and Jerry rigor interchangeable m you knew that kitty corner
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: caddy corner. No one knows what one's right. Yeah, what
- 2:14:05Speaker 1: do you think about that? Kurt? Is that an east
- 2:14:07Speaker 1: coast west coast thing? I don't think so. I don't
- 2:14:09Speaker 1: know tomato tomato things. Yeah, in the other final wells,
- 2:14:13Speaker 1: yeah no, because it's different the pronunciations, right down to
- 2:14:15Speaker 1: the spelling catty corner and kitty corner. Um. Nothing hunt
- 2:14:22Speaker 1: with a partner. You were saying, Oh, yeah, no, I
- 2:14:25Speaker 1: think I think you hit on that, just that change
- 2:14:28Speaker 1: of stuff. But you're a solo man. Yeah. How many
- 2:14:31Speaker 1: sheet punks you done by yourself? I don't know actually, um,
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: but yeah, probably you know for since it's two thousand. Yeah,
- 2:14:45Speaker 1: just a bad mofo out winding around the mountains by
- 2:14:48Speaker 1: yourself at dinnertime. No, no hogging his rifle all night.
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: It's just that of necessity, you know, when you're when
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: you're in cold grab, when you when you're taking those
- 2:15:03Speaker 1: chunks of time. A lot of times it's it's it's
- 2:15:06Speaker 1: tough to line up, you know, schedules and people who
- 2:15:10Speaker 1: want to go into the same areas. And some dude
- 2:15:13Speaker 1: came to you. Some dude came to you and said, hey, man,
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: I want to throw in with you on your sheep
- 2:15:19Speaker 1: hunt this September. You'd probably say no, because why have
- 2:15:23Speaker 1: the That's what my brother's thing is. I don't know.
- 2:15:26Speaker 1: I'm gonna pitch him right now. Will be like, look,
- 2:15:28Speaker 1: can't do that. I'll carry enough fuel so we can
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: eat hot shit every night. We'll split the weight of
- 2:15:34Speaker 1: our shelter and our spot and scope, and I'll even
- 2:15:38Speaker 1: carry an extra pair of socks and on these for you.
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: Do I get to shoot first? Yeah, in the unit
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: where one sheep closes. Yeah, I forgot about that. Yeah,
- 2:15:51Speaker 1: my brother who could out lonely you, he might not
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: out lonely if he could compy on loneliness lonely tolerance. Um,
- 2:15:58Speaker 1: he just likes, just likes not having to like consult.
- 2:16:03Speaker 1: What do you think? I don't know, what do you think? Yeah?
- 2:16:05Speaker 1: I think we should go over there. I mean, he's
- 2:16:07Speaker 1: happy to hunt with people, but he sees the upside.
- 2:16:09Speaker 1: It's not like he you know, he just sees the
- 2:16:13Speaker 1: upside and being by himself in that, just not having
- 2:16:16Speaker 1: to well, and he's mentioned that right there. He's like,
- 2:16:18Speaker 1: I never had to worry about who's shooting first. I'm
- 2:16:20Speaker 1: always up exactly. So. But anyways, if some dude came
- 2:16:25Speaker 1: to you instead, and it's a friend yours, not some
- 2:16:26Speaker 1: straight wildcat, right, some some dude came to you and said, hey,
- 2:16:29Speaker 1: I want to throw in I was thinking about going
- 2:16:31Speaker 1: to the same place anyway, would you be like, maybe
- 2:16:33Speaker 1: I'll bump into you, or would you then say, you
- 2:16:36Speaker 1: know what, let's let's coordinate. No, if it was a
- 2:16:39Speaker 1: good friend, I'd yeah, I'd welcome it. So you're not
- 2:16:43Speaker 1: You're not like pushing You're not pushing your best friends
- 2:16:45Speaker 1: on Oh no, no, no, not any not any respect.
- 2:16:49Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I have lots of good friends that
- 2:16:51Speaker 1: you know, we go on hunts, you know, throughout the year,
- 2:16:54Speaker 1: whether it be elk or or any of that. I
- 2:16:57Speaker 1: just think that you kind of have to find somebody
- 2:16:59Speaker 1: spe Siana hunt like this that's willing to take what
- 2:17:02Speaker 1: time you have for the year, because you know, for
- 2:17:05Speaker 1: all of us, between you know, work and family and
- 2:17:08Speaker 1: all that, being able to take fourteen days and go
- 2:17:12Speaker 1: possibly on a hunt where you're not going to fill
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: the freezer, a lot of people don't want to do that.
- 2:17:16Speaker 1: It's not a freezer filler. No, especially when we have
- 2:17:19Speaker 1: so much great elk hunting, you know, all around here
- 2:17:23Speaker 1: is your wife Maddie about fourteen days. No, not even
- 2:17:26Speaker 1: kind of a little bit. No, but it hasn't when
- 2:17:29Speaker 1: you come back. When you come back, is it gonna
- 2:17:32Speaker 1: be the kind of thing where it's like, oh my god,
- 2:17:34Speaker 1: he's home. It's so great. Or will it be that
- 2:17:37Speaker 1: you come in and it's kind of like, oh, hey,
- 2:17:39Speaker 1: can you take care of this? It depends if I
- 2:17:43Speaker 1: come back with the sheet actors that in. No, No,
- 2:17:48Speaker 1: but that there's I think that there is a part
- 2:17:50Speaker 1: of that where you know, when you spend that much time,
- 2:17:52Speaker 1: you want to be successful. But it's also a nice
- 2:17:56Speaker 1: knowing going into it that that really isn't the expectation,
- 2:17:58Speaker 1: you know, it's it's really more about the adventure and
- 2:18:02Speaker 1: taking that time and you figure out another way to
- 2:18:05Speaker 1: fill the fraser. Yeah, because doll sheep too, man. I
- 2:18:09Speaker 1: mean they're not that big. No, they're not freezer fillers. No, No,
- 2:18:13Speaker 1: not by any stretch. But it's pretty high quality, it is.
- 2:18:16Speaker 1: I think it's a lot of guys, Yeah, a lot
- 2:18:19Speaker 1: of guys in the Laska regarded as the finest, right
- 2:18:21Speaker 1: it is. Yeah, but it's it's just a lot more.
- 2:18:25Speaker 1: It's a bottle lot more than that. Man, It's not
- 2:18:27Speaker 1: like out filling doe TEGs. It's just a whole different deal,
- 2:18:30Speaker 1: it is. Yeah, it's a whole different deal. It's just
- 2:18:33Speaker 1: doing something that you have to be paying total attention to,
- 2:18:36Speaker 1: man and being like a little bit vulnerable all the time. Yeah,
- 2:18:39Speaker 1: and being like there is no real there's really no
- 2:18:43Speaker 1: getting lucky m hm no. And it takes you out
- 2:18:47Speaker 1: of your comfort zone. And so you know, that's the
- 2:18:50Speaker 1: one thing that I found about those types of adventures
- 2:18:53Speaker 1: is every time you push yourself, that becomes a new norm. So, uh,
- 2:18:58Speaker 1: you know, you're you're looking to ad ants, you're looking
- 2:19:00Speaker 1: to stay longer or get farther in or go by
- 2:19:03Speaker 1: yourself or whatever your next step is that you know
- 2:19:06Speaker 1: you can There's never a finite finish line. Yeah, there's
- 2:19:12Speaker 1: there's always something that you can add to it. There's
- 2:19:14Speaker 1: always some other way that you can challenge yourself. I
- 2:19:18Speaker 1: think it's kind of the cool part about it for sure. Yeah,
- 2:19:23Speaker 1: we have a new norm. Yeah, cold food, yeah, lonely nights.
- 2:19:32Speaker 1: You can you can learn how to deal with that.
- 2:19:33Speaker 1: You can learn how to deal with a lot. Man,
- 2:19:35Speaker 1: It's not that bad. No, you make it sound fun.
- 2:19:39Speaker 1: Oh yeah, any final gear thoughts, I don't have any.
- 2:19:43Speaker 1: You're tapped. Yeah, I was tearing me up with my
- 2:19:47Speaker 1: bringing my my Um no, I'm cool on that. But
- 2:19:53Speaker 1: my track and pull with the ice axe head stuck
- 2:19:56Speaker 1: to it. So I thought of as a mountain go
- 2:19:59Speaker 1: hunt and too man. Now, yeah, it's kind of got
- 2:20:03Speaker 1: me thinking excavation. I think there's a chance to that
- 2:20:06Speaker 1: we're gonna cross some glaciers, so yeah, we might want
- 2:20:08Speaker 1: to think about having more than just one with us. Yeah,
- 2:20:11Speaker 1: Danny probably carry his Oneman brother. All right, sir, Yanni's good.
- 2:20:17Speaker 1: No last thoughts, I'm good man. All right. I hope
- 2:20:19Speaker 1: you come back and your wife's like, oh my god,
- 2:20:21Speaker 1: he's home me too, and not like you'll never guess
- 2:20:27Speaker 1: what you'll never guess what the kids did. All right, Thanks,
