- 0:11your faith that it helps you have more of the God perspective
- 0:14for your day. Enjoy SO.
- 0:17Today I just want to continue on the theme that we have had of
- 0:21discipleship. So Mel and I have obviously for
- 0:25this year, we've got in our hearts to direct this church
- 0:28into full alignment down the lines of discipleship in order
- 0:32for us to grow into our future. And so the title of my message
- 0:36today is belonging before believing, belonging before
- 0:40believing. And So what I'm going to do this
- 0:43morning is take us on a different angle when we are
- 0:46looking at the concept of discipleship in the life of this
- 0:50church. So Matthew 2819 says, go
- 0:53therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them
- 0:58in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
- 1:02So I have a question for us this morning.
- 1:06Where and when does discipleship biblically begin?
- 1:13Where and when does the Bible teach us that discipleship
- 1:18actually begins? So the apostle Paul wrote in the
- 1:22Bible. In Romans 10, verse 14, he says,
- 1:26How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?
- 1:30And how shall they believe in Him on whom they have not heard?
- 1:35And how shall they hear without a preacher?
- 1:38And how shall they preach, unless they are sent as it is
- 1:43written? How beautiful are the feet of
- 1:44those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of
- 1:49good things, but they have not all obeyed the gospel.
- 1:52For Rosiah says, Lord, who has believed our report.
- 1:57So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
- 2:03You can have faith that Jesus is the Son of God, but until you
- 2:09exercise evangelism you do not see the power or the evidence of
- 2:16your God flowing through your life.
- 2:20See, the reality is is God does many things for us, but there is
- 2:25a level that God calls His church up to and too many people
- 2:30don't go up to that next level. And I'm talking this morning
- 2:34about a level where our discipleship is not just for our
- 2:38fellow Christian, but we move into a an evangelistic idea
- 2:44where we are disciple in the world that God has given around
- 2:49us. In other words, discipleship is
- 2:52before people even become Christians.
- 2:55Before people have a relationship with Jesus, they
- 2:59may must hear all about him. See what it's like for someone
- 3:03who has Jesus in their life. They don't see that unless you
- 3:08and I example that. Let me tell you, being a
- 3:13Christian isn't a fad. It's not something that we go,
- 3:18you know what? I've given my life to God, but
- 3:20I'm just going to live the way I want to live or I'm going to
- 3:23come to church because that's what Christians do.
- 3:26But I'm going to hang around in my voluntary time environments
- 3:31that aren't showing Christ in me or doing things that don't show
- 3:36Christ in me. You know, I'm never hung up
- 3:39about things like drugs or smoking or alcohol and things
- 3:45like that. But the reality is, is as we
- 3:48mature in our salvation, in our relationship with God, we begin
- 3:54to live a life that examples the Christ transformation that is
- 3:58inside of us. And so every person, no matter
- 4:02how big or how small your struggle might be, we all have
- 4:06to come to a, a maturing in our faith or our relationship with
- 4:11God where we say that thing is no longer acceptable by me in my
- 4:17life because it does not evidence to the world around me
- 4:21that God is bringing, bringing, bringing transformation into who
- 4:25I am. Does that make sense?
- 4:27And so there is an onus on all Christians to allow God to
- 4:32challenge us, as Pastor Dan so greatly did today, that to allow
- 4:36God to challenge us and then transform us and grow us into a,
- 4:43a, a greater reality of what it is to live like Christ, to
- 4:48behave like Christ, to talk like Christ.
- 4:50Does this make sense? So you and I in the church, we
- 4:54are the carriers of the Holy Spirit.
- 4:56But that's not a simple byproduct.
- 5:00You have to be in your word and and in prayer to understand what
- 5:04you're carrying. Does this make sense?
- 5:06We, we are living in an era where words alone don't carry
- 5:11enough. Words alone don't carry enough.
- 5:15Saying I love Jesus, people want the proof saying that Jesus is
- 5:21he loves me in spite. People need the evidence.
- 5:25Does this make sense? And so this is what discipleship
- 5:28is about. Even before people are in the
- 5:30church, in your lunch room, at work, in your university rooms,
- 5:35in class. You know the Bible says to do
- 5:37all things as as though unto the Lord.
- 5:40So you might be in class and you might hate your class but fake
- 5:44it. This is awesome.
- 5:47You know God's transforming. I'm learning from my lecturer
- 5:52right now. You might hate it, but God is
- 5:55growing you through it. Does this make sense?
- 5:58So you might hate the thing, but you love the transformation
- 6:01God's bringing into your life. And so we have to evidence if we
- 6:06gossip and stay at the same level at lunchtime that of the
- 6:10conversations that are around us, what's the difference?
- 6:13Why would they want to come to church then alone give their
- 6:16whole lives to Jesus Christ? So we have to live as people
- 6:20that are being transformed. If God's transforming your life,
- 6:25which I know He is, He's transforming all of our lives in
- 6:28this great church. If it's transforming our lives,
- 6:32we need to let that out so it's seen by other people.
- 6:36We need to evidence what God is doing on the inside by wearing
- 6:40it on the outside. So belonging before believing
- 6:45it's it's discipleship before salvation.
- 6:50Now discipleship has many layers to it and all layers begin to
- 6:55disciple someone when there is intention behind it.
- 6:59So you might go, well, how is that discipleship like in the
- 7:02church? You I've been talking about
- 7:04discipleship groups or life groups that are discipleship
- 7:07focused. We do discipleship in our YA
- 7:10youth Friday nights. They break up into the
- 7:12discipleship. This is more influenced than
- 7:15what It's discipleship. No, if you, if you just allow it
- 7:19to stay in the word influence, there's this connotation that we
- 7:24do something and then we just walk away from it.
- 7:26We've influenced or we've put a smell or an aroma in the room
- 7:31with our words, but then we walk away from that.
- 7:35What I'm saying to us as a church is discipleship because
- 7:39more than that we are standing with those people.
- 7:43Sin is sin. So don't be shocked by that.
- 7:45But through their sin, we can still be there for them.
- 7:49We can just say, hey, here's my number.
- 7:52If you ever need me, here I am. I'm not talking about giving
- 7:55personal bank accounts and and making them your best friend.
- 7:59But what I'm saying is we don't just say God loves you and walk
- 8:03away. What we do is we say God loves
- 8:06you and then we show them through our own lives the an
- 8:09example of what God could do in their lives.
- 8:12Does that make sense? But words alone don't doesn't do
- 8:15that. It's going to skip for the sake
- 8:18of time. The system of discipleship isn't
- 8:26really all that clear in the Bible.
- 8:30And this is because discipleship is a journey that requires
- 8:33growth, learning, maturing, and the application.
- 8:39In the church. We have systems to help people
- 8:42grow in knowledge, faith, relationship with God, connect
- 8:46with other believers to disciple and big disciple to outwork what
- 8:50we learn. We do this through life groups,
- 8:52next steps courses, youth group conferences, Sunday gatherings,
- 8:57camps, counseling, so many things.
- 9:01But there's belonging before believing.
- 9:04Discipleship starts as someone hearing from you, then someone
- 9:11trusting you, and then someone following you, hearing,
- 9:16trusting, and following. But the goal is that people
- 9:21follow Jesus, learn from His word, the Bible, and live more
- 9:28and more like Jesus lived when he was here on planet earth.
- 9:32How do they understand that? It's not by telling them, it's
- 9:36by showing them. So it's the next level.
- 9:39This is a call up that our whole lives has to if we're having a,
- 9:45a party at our house or over a friend's party.
- 9:50It's not an exception card from Christian walking from your
- 9:54faith. Does that make sense?
- 9:56It's an opportunity for you to bring Christ who's in you into
- 10:00that environment. If you've been invited into
- 10:03something, you've been, you've been given an opportunity.
- 10:06If someone's invited me, that's because they want me to bring
- 10:09Christ to that situation. That's they don't, they're not
- 10:12after my dancing. I'm not a good dancer,
- 10:15definitely not after my karaoke. I make karaoke sound bad, like
- 10:19they're not after that. They've invited me because they
- 10:22want Christ to walk into that room.
- 10:25And that's the way I view it anyway, right.
- 10:27And so if you're in the shopping centre, in a workplace
- 10:30lunchroom, This is why. Now evangelism and discipleship
- 10:35are joined at the hip. Christian, let me tell you
- 10:39today, if you're in this room, you've been called to
- 10:43evangelism. Discipleship and evangelism are
- 10:48joined at the hip. 2 more minutes and we'll we'll pause.
- 10:52The relationship between discipling and witnessing is
- 10:57seamless. Evangelism without its partner
- 11:01discipleship either creates religion or rebellion.
- 11:06I'm going to say that again. Evangelism without its partner
- 11:10discipleship either creates religion or rebellion.
- 11:17Billy Hull and Bobby Harrington says evangelism is simply a form
- 11:22of pre conversion discipleship. The two evangelism and
- 11:27discipleship are the front and the back of the same coin.
- 11:33So let me tell you evangelists in the house, if you've got that
- 11:36definite gift on your life, I don't OK, but doesn't exempt me
- 11:40from evangelizing. It just means it's it doesn't
- 11:44energize me. It just means you're not going
- 11:46to see me putting in to my calendar, walking around
- 11:49shopping centres, OK, What I'm probably doing is leadership
- 11:53training and leadership resourcing, OK.
- 11:56But everywhere I go, I'm an evangelist.
- 12:01And so if you're an evangelist, well, you are right.
- 12:04So as evangelist, when we say the word evangelist, we are also
- 12:11saying the word discipleship. So everywhere you and I go,
- 12:16shopping centres, work rooms, University, School, no matter
- 12:23where it is, if you're retired, every friendship, relationship,
- 12:27every time you're out in the caravan, whatever you're doing,
- 12:30you're not leaving Christianity behind at the church on Sunday.
- 12:33And we'll get back to that in two weeks when we're back from
- 12:36our trip. Everywhere you go as a
- 12:39Christian, you're evangelizing and discipling all at once.
- 12:44You're evangelizing someone and telling them about the goodness
- 12:48of God, but you're also imparting into them Christianity
- 12:53or the faith that God or the transformation of God has placed
- 12:56in your life. We are imparting, not just
- 13:00telling. We aren't just sharing, we're
- 13:03also showing. We also giving them tips of how
- 13:07to move forward in this area of the We are not just telling them
- 13:10of the goodness of God and leaving it at that.
- 13:13If you're going to tell them of the goodness of God, you also
- 13:16need to show them that God heals, which means you need to
- 13:20pray. Does this make sense?
- 13:22And as they see the power and the wonder of God move through
- 13:26their life more and more, and God sends them people like you,
- 13:30you will find them in a church on a Sunday because the Father
- 13:33draws people to the Spirit. Does this make sense?
- 13:36And so you might be in this place this morning and you're
- 13:40hearing and watching and the testimonies and even just what's
- 13:44happened with young Jay. And you're like, man, this is
- 13:48like real stuff. This is real life.
- 13:51This is real living. Let me tell you.
- 13:54It sure is. It's very exciting, actually,
- 13:56every day. Nothing more exciting than
- 13:58getting her a text from from Pastor Rach.
- 14:02He's going all the way. I are at my house.
- 14:04My son just grew 2 centimetres. Yeah, it's pretty exciting
- 14:08stuff, being a Christian.
