Transcript
- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is the 17th of August, it is
- 0:17Thursday, and it's great that you have joined me so that we
- 0:22can begin a new section of Isaiah over the next.
- 0:27Well, today and most of next week, we begin the next section
- 0:30where instead of Isaiah talking very specifically about
- 0:34different nations that God will deal with, we now enter a much
- 0:38broader kind of prophecy where God begins to talk about the
- 0:43final times where God will judge the world and restore God's
- 0:48Kingdom. I'm afraid there may not be a
- 0:50whole lot of restoration today. Today is going to be a lot about
- 0:54the judgment and the destruction.
- 0:56So you're just going to have to have to bear with it and know
- 0:59that God has got actually more to say and that this chapter is
- 1:03just part of this next message. So wherever you are today, let
- 1:08us put down everything that we are holding so tightly and rest
- 1:14into the presence of our incredible God and the huge
- 1:18story of God's engagement with humanity.
- 1:24Here we are, Lord, part of that story.
- 1:28Share your truth with us today. All right, folks, let's do it.
- 1:35Let us read together Isaiah chapter 24.
- 1:49Look, the Lord is about to destroy the earth and make it a
- 1:54vast wasteland. He devastates the surface of the
- 1:58earth and scatters the people. Priests and lay people, servants
- 2:03and masters, maids and mistresses, buyers and sellers,
- 2:07lenders and borrowers, bankers and debtors.
- 2:12None will be spared. The earth will be completely
- 2:16emptied and looted. The Lord has spoken.
- 2:20The earth mourns and dries up, and the land wastes away and
- 2:25Withers. Even the greatest people on
- 2:28earth waste away. The earth suffers for the sins
- 2:32of its people, for they have twisted God's instructions,
- 2:36violated his laws, and broken his everlasting covenant.
- 2:41Therefore a curse consumes the earth.
- 2:45Its people must pay the price for their sin.
- 2:49They are destroyed by fire, and only a few are left alive.
- 2:54The grapevines waste of way and there is no new wine.
- 2:59All the merrymakers sigh and mourn.
- 3:03The cheerful sound of tambourines is stilled.
- 3:07The happy cries of celebration are heard no more.
- 3:11The melodious chords of the harp are silent.
- 3:15Gone are the joys of wine and song.
- 3:18Alcoholic drink turns bitter in the mouth.
- 3:22The city rides in chaos. Every home is locked to keep out
- 3:27intruders. Mobs gather in the streets,
- 3:29crying out for wine. Joy has turned into gloom.
- 3:34Gladness has been banished from the land.
- 3:38The city is left in ruins, its gates battered down throughout
- 3:43the earth. The story is the same.
- 3:45Only a remnant is left, like the stray olives left on the tree or
- 3:50the few grapes left on the vine after harvest.
- 3:55But all who are left shout and sing for joy.
- 4:00Those in the West praise the Lord's majesty, in Eastern lands
- 4:05give glory to the Lord, and the lands beyond the sea praise the
- 4:10name of the Lord, the God of Israel.
- 4:15We hear songs of praise from the ends of the earth, songs that
- 4:18give glory to the Righteous One. But my heart is heavy with
- 4:23grief. Weep from me, for I wither away.
- 4:28Deceit still prevails, and treachery is everywhere.
- 4:33Terror and traps and snares will be your lot, you people of the
- 4:37earth. Those who flee and terror will
- 4:40fall into a trap, and those who escape the trap will be caught
- 4:45in a snare. Destruction falls like rain from
- 4:50the heavens. The foundations of the earth
- 4:52shake. The earth has broken up.
- 4:57It is utterly collapsed. It is violently shaken.
- 5:03The earth staggers like a drunk. It trembles like a tent in a
- 5:07storm. It falls and will not rise
- 5:10again, for the guilt of its rebellion is very heavy.
- 5:16In that day the Lord will punish the gods in the heavens and the
- 5:22proud rulers of the nations on earth.
- 5:25They will be rounded up and put in prison.
- 5:28They will be shut up in prison and will finally be punished.
- 5:33Then the glory of the moon will wane, and the brightness of the
- 5:38sun will fade. For the Lord of Heaven's armies
- 5:41will rule on Mount Zion. He will rule in great glory in
- 5:47Jerusalem, in the sight of all the leaders of his people.
- 6:02Yeah, just in case we forget sometimes.
- 6:04You certainly are in charge. We just defer to you and to your
- 6:11sovereignty, Lord. And when it's all about us and
- 6:15all about what we think ought to happen, we just give that over
- 6:19to you and acknowledge that it's your will that is supreme, and
- 6:26it's your mighty hand that drags the sun from its covers each
- 6:30morning and lights our days and holds us each and everyone of
- 6:39them. You are the greatest, You are
- 6:44sovereign above everything else, and we worship you, almighty,
- 6:51everlasting God. And it's in Jesus name that we
- 6:56pray. Amen.
