- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I really need to recharge my batteries.
- 0:02SPEAKER_02: Recharge my batteries.
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: My meditation in the morning.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I w I went to a uh seven day uh silent meditation.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Silent retreat.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Whenever someone does that, like I I did a I did a cleanse and uh If you don't have kids, what the hell are you talking about?
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: Anyone needs a silent treat, anyone with young kids.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: They're so loud and obnoxious.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: What do you have an adult?
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: You're by yourself and you need to go like, dude, just be in your house.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: There's no one talking.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: There's no one living with you.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: What you have you like half these guys, no but they don't even have dogs.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: No.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what what are you getting away from?
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: What do you just stop reading comments for a minute?
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: All right, good morning, Joshua.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: How are you doing?
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: All right, so we uh you just brought up uh a uh a comment from our our friend Todd Plas in the Goo crew.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: And uh I hope I'm saying his last name right, but anyway, he had a question about he's doing an estimate for a rental property, and then we were talking right before we hit record here on uh like doing different types of estimates for different types of work, and I do have some thoughts on this, and basically he's just trying to not get screwed doing this work, and it is in riff shape.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: So, Joshua, you had some insights on this type of thing here.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so Todd posted a question in the goo, and it's a 1900 square foot interior of a house, it's two stories.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, some of the walls need priming for some nasty stuff.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, the ceilings, walls trim, doors, everything needs to be painted.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: And uh he was asking, How much and how long for one person to paint?
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: And I I think you're just trying to look for some feedback.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: And so he said, Next, the next comment was uh the owners of the house, I believe his two brothers were trying to get uh 20 like get the whole place painted for$2,400, which is like a dollar twenty-five a square foot, which is insanely low.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: And if you like you're flying if you could do that, and for reference, if the his comment or his uh post right underneath this first one is pictures of this place, and it is in it needs some serious work.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: There is like soot damage everywhere.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's smoke damage, there's like holes.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: It's like I think it's soot damage, there's big like holes in the drywall, there's all kinds of stuff going on.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: Like this is and so I followed up with I'm just asking a question.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, and his issue was it's hard for him to drop the quality because if you're gonna go fast, you have to drop the quality for something like that.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: And he said that's just tough for him to do, which is the same we find as whenever we quote for a rental.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: It's hard for us just to do a worse job than we normally do.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: And the problem is when you keep the quality that high, you end up going too slow for the like what they want, right?
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: Because they're not gonna pay premium top dollar uh for a rental.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Most most at least most people won't.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: Some will.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, and so uh we kind of asked him some questions, and he I said, Well, like what what do you need to charge to make money and get through it?
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: And he was thinking around 5k, which is still really inexpensive for that big of a property.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, dude.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: But then when he filed up, he said he works more trying more on um time and materials of like they provide the paint, and I actually they provide the paint, I believe, and he just will charge hourly.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: That's kind of where he ended up.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: So that way you can't beat your time, but you also don't lose money.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: If you say I charge this much per hour, and if it takes me this many hours, we'll we'll do it.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Uh so that is where he kind of ended up, which I think is a very smart move for that.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: If it's like a good client, they're and they'll actually pay you.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: I it yeah, I mean to me, it doesn't really sound like a good client.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: So it's it's more of what I don't know the whole situation.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: Is this a repeat business?
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Have you done uh like did you paint from other places, or is it like a tons of rental properties?
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: That's what I don't know.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but just this kind of reminds me because we do quotes all the time for usually we're residential repaints, or besides someone who just had their kitchen redone and now they spend tons of money on their kitchen, and then they're trying to get a nice paint job where they went all the prep and we just do a very nice, it's focused on quality.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but then like I remember doing quotes throughout even this last year, like for either rentals or someone's apartment, and then we've done it for commercial that's more apartment setup, and there's like huge ranges of painting.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Because I'll know, like, if you want to go like high quality what we do, and like we're not as fast, versus uh like if you want to go all speed and no quality, it's like a toll brothers, yeah.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: Or uh like um not just toll brothers, but like any type of track homes being built.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: So I talked to our guys at Sheron Williams, and I was like, yo, man, this is who buys and this is a commercial store.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: This is a commercial store.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: I was like, Well, who's your biggest client here?
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: It's like, oh, these like it was like some interesting name, you know, Mama Mia's uh painting.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: I'm like, what do they do?
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: It's like they paint for all the big builders around.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: I was like, well, how much do they charge?
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: They're like about two grand to paint like a brand new$800,000 home, which would probably be like over 2,000 square feet.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, for sure.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: I'm like, how I'm like, how long does it take them to do it?
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: They're like a day.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Well, because you asked what product they use, yeah, and that they use like painter's edge.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: So they use a product, he's like, the guy for the manager from the store is like, this is the worst paint we have.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: It's about nine, I was like, nine bucks a gallon or twelve bucks a gallon, it's called Painter's Edge.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: He's like, You can't roll brush and roll it, you have to spray it.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and so I asked him, like, well, what do they do?
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: He's like, they will spray, it'll be like a crew of two or three, like three to four guys that will just come in and spray a whole house in one day.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: And he's like, that's uh you tell you touch it, it's like all chalky and it comes off on your hand.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so like whenever you go to like a new home, they have the worst paint in there.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: It'll be like a almost a million dollar home, and they have the worst paint that's in the store at Sheron Williams, and it's like two grand all in or like$2,500 all in.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it's probably over.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: If we were to paint it, it'd probably cost over$40.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, for sure.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, these are big homes, and the the way they spray them too is usually there's no windows installed, so it's just rocked, and there's not a lot of the finishes on there, and they just come in and spray.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: So there's no, I don't think they and he was even saying they don't even backroll.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I asked, I'm like, hey, do they backroll?
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: He just laughed at me.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: He's like, they don't backroll.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: What are you talking about, man?
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: They they're kind of dude, it's nuts.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: Spray and prey, baby.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: And that's but that's like the fastest speed, uh lowest quality one.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: They're in and out, so you couldn't price it like like that's how it's priced.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: And then like the next step up, because we have a guy in the group, I have to look up his name, where he's comes from an apartment painting background, like mega apartments.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Like, here's 300 apartments, and we did a bit like that years ago.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: And you're just turning them, like you have to turn those in like a day.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and that's just not, and like I pretty much now have just one setting on my paint, it's just full retard.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: That's like all that's all I have.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: It's just like there's no it's like I I'm the worst at doing that stuff.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: You're the only one that looked because I walk into something like that, I'm like, no, yeah.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: No, it's just more of where are you?
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: Do you have tons of work?
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Do you want the work?
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if you're in that spot, you can turn down work.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: But if you're like, I need a job, I have nothing going on in two weeks, this would be good.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it works for people, but it's just more if you have to adjust to the style.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and some people are used to painting super fast, they can do it and get it done.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: But I'll just say, like, like we did uh commercial painting um for a retirement community, but it was a high-end retirement community.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're paying for a three two-bedroom apartment,$500 to$600,000 to move in, six thousand dollars a month rent.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: So they had the budget to pay us, you know, four grand to paint the unit, and it would we'd make good money.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: But the problem is that account recommended me to one of their sister properties.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: Oh I didn't look into it like what kind of was, but it was like a low-income housing, which uh this and here's the mistake I made.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: I asked them it's like in my 20s, I was like, hey, uh, what kind of like painting do you want here?
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Do you want like high quality or more for speed?
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: And no one ever tells you they want low quality.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: No one, yeah, even if it's for like an apartment that they know wink wink, it's speed and not quality, right?
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: But no one's ever gonna say drop the quality, but they're like, no, you need to go fast, but they don't kind of tell you.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: So I gave them the price and just crickets back, and then I kind of was my contact.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: It was actually the carpet guy from Rydal who recommended me to him because he did the carpet over there.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: Of course, and then he got back to me and I'm like, hey man, I didn't even hear.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: He's like, Oh, they were just like blown away by your pricing.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: I'm like, what?
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: And it didn't seem like it was high pricing, it was still less than we charge at the um high higher end account.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: And I'm just like, oh, I was just missing because then I looked them up later.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: I'm like, oh, they're low income, they're just you know, it's paint this thing for 500 bucks and get it done in a day.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you almost need a guy in there who's doesn't know what good painting looks like to just go in and smash it.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Well, it's it's it's uh finding the right guy, but it's also knowing what they want.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Because if you're if someone runs a like uh a 300 unit apartment building, they like I need to get this.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: This is like the expense needs to be in this range, right?
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: Maybe you'll pay a couple percent more for it, but they're not gonna pay triple the price that they're used to paying.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: Like it needs to get done and look good enough so someone will rent out the unit.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think there's other so they don't tell you ahead of time, but that's what it is, but you're supposed to just know.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: But I'm just thinking that was my experience.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, almost that's just like you almost need them to give you the budget so that you can then dictate how much prep you're gonna do.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but a lot if they're good, they'll do that because a lot of times they try to keep it in a mission.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: I'm like, uh and now I'd be like, what do you need to charge for this?
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: Like, what's the range you're looking for?
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: And could I do it for that range?
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Because it then it almost needs to because your your hourly should not change regardless of who you're paying for.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: You should make the same amount of money for almost anything you do.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: Everything you're doing, and then so you if if they're like, hey, it's gonna be, I don't know, like a thousand dollars a unit or something.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: I don't even know if that would be too high.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: But then you just back then you do some math and be like, all right, what's a thousand divided by eighty-five or whatever you're trying to do.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: I want to make eighty bucks an hour all in, and then you gotta that because then you almost have to reverse engineer the estimate and you're like, okay, what what do I need to do to make this a smooth operation where I'm in and out of here in a day?
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Like that kind of a thing.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Like if you knew you could go in and blast for like I don't know, say you wanted to pull 680 bucks in a day, that covers your day rate and whatever.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Like, if they're like, okay, 680 for the unit, then you're like, what, what's because you could refine your systems and start shaving time down on your prep and whatever.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: If you because if you painted like 30 of the same unit, you could probably get pretty quick at it, and you might be able to hone your kind of skills down, be like, all right, I'm just gonna take care of the most egregious things, and then you need to be hitting these time stamps if that's if that's worth it for you to fill your 18 18-inch rollers, three-quarter nap, and you're just blowing it out.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I because now you're getting into production work.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: You are that's that's that's what it is.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: That's when you're probably gonna be using like like a colossus microfiber, you're just loading that bitch up, and the same paint is going everywhere, you're just gonna grip it and rip it mini-roll, like too.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: You're going around light switches, yeah.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just not there's nothing's coming off the wall.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: It's gonna live there.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: So that that would be so yeah.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: I get it if you need to fill your book and like, hey, they could, you know, but it's it's just whether or not you you don't want to end up making five dollars an hour where you're like painstakingly doing all this stuff.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: With that job Todd posted, there's a lot of prep in there.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Like he's gonna have to be some of it look like it needs like bench shellac, some heavy-duty primers, that that all that just I don't know if Todd's got a lot of work backed up.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: He's always busy doing stuff, so I just like I don't know, man.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: You you do you, but I'll if you can make money.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: We've made money on rentals before, but it's just there's certain ones that we're just that we're just not suited for because it's hard for us to drop the quality.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: But sometimes if guys come from a production background, they can be fast and inexpensive, but it's hard for them to up the quality.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: Yes, because they can't hit the standard that you know the builder or renovator is looking for or the homeowner's looking for.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Like, why didn't you guys prep?
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: Why well, because I usually don't prep, or I usually don't do these tight cut-ins, right?
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's the same like the same paint, ceiling, and walls.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: So you have that issue as well, but it's sometimes it just depends on like what you're used to and what you're used to doing.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: But it's if you have speed, it's I feel like you could up the quality.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: Like as long as you have the brush skills, you could probably do that easier than someone who's slow and needs to get fast.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: No, you would need yeah.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, we because we can go fast.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: It's just that's not I mean the the issue too is especially with the work that we've been doing like I mean, pretty much all this year, it's very what I'm doing right now is one of the most meticulous jobs that I've that I do is of staining and finishing a new staircase, and it is just full autism st narrow band of focus trying to get these colors to match and like prepping everything perfectly and all of these things.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: It's very diff.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Like if you if I had to go from what I'm doing right now and then like Jeremy paint this sloppy unit, I would be like, ugh, like I couldn't, it wouldn't.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: And I I have I particularly have a hard time dropping quality, like because you the the I had this discussion with uh uh one of the guys we were talking to, I think it was a carpenter or something, but uh about when you are bringing on new guys and you're basically asking them, like, do you think that looks good?
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: And they're like, Yeah, and it looks like balls, and you're like, dude, you can't so like you're as you get deeper into your work and your skills come up, you're refining your eye for what you're looking for in the finished quality you're producing, and like you want that you want your standard to be above whatever your client wants.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: So very rarely do we paint something now and the client's like, this looks like shit.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: That almost never happens because our standards are higher than our client's standards, which is kind of where you want it to be, and then when you start playing with people that are saying, like, just blow it out, I I I'm terrible at that.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: Then I'm just gonna be like, you know, I'm gonna work a super long day and get this thing perfect, and then I can't switch that off because I'm like, this bothers me too much.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like you know, you're we're suited more for the quality side of things, and if there's certain speed we can, but if we're saying hey, blow this apartment out in a day with you know a few guys, oh it's just hard for us to do.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Like we'd have to really make some changes.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Well, and and then now we don't because we have a we don't have that kind of work.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: We have a full book, we don't do that work, yeah.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: And like we price ourselves out of that almost immediately.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then if they call me, I'm not even gonna look at it.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: So that's but as it does, it's there's like there's but there's like it's just more if there's a few modes that we have seen, but but always when it's a rental, unless it's some high-end luxury rental, but if it's like usually that's just lower budget, faster, lower quality, just make it so they the next person can rent it out.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, rental.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: And they never say reduce the quality, no one ever says that, but it's like wink wink kind of implied.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, rentals flips that kind of yeah, rentals flips apartment, like big mega apartments.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Well, and I had a I had an estimate that you actually talked me out of doing, which I was very grateful for because it was gonna take me a ton of time because it was far away.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: And uh that was it was bait, it was a rental, yes, and they were trying to get it done while the family was away, and they were gonna have every contractor in there doing all these things.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: It was just like a nightmare.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: That's another one where I was like, you because you start being like, Yeah, no, I could do this, and you're like, why?
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Why am I doing this?
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Like, that's it's fine.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: Like, we've had a lot of that this year for whatever reason.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Well, people have called us and been like, We're gonna be away on vacation.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: Can you come do the painting while we're gone?
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: But everyone's gone the same week.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: I know, and then you're like, I I mean, I would like to, and then you just told me the other day, you're like, dude, who cares if they're there or not?
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Like, we do it all the time when people are there.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: I'm like, Yeah, you're right.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: Like, well, if you're yeah, putting false pressure on ourselves, like, well, we have a work already this week, we're not gonna go crazy to get be two places at once.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: We'll do the most important job and prioritize that one, and then just move on to the next one.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: It'll be okay.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just especially when there's no kids around, there's no little kids bouncing around.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: Usually they're you know, they're retired clients or their kids are grown.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's just two adults, it's fine.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, we I think the the false pressure can really it can it messes with me because then I start getting anxiety about we have all this work we need to get through, or people are gonna be mad at me.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: And then then you like talk to the client and they're like, Yeah, whatever.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't care.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Dang it, I shouldn't have been stressed about this at all.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Such an idiot.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: So, well, I hope I hope uh I'm interested to see what Todd ends up doing if he ends up doing that.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Getting the job and seeing if he actually makes money.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: Because I think the the most important conclusion you get is you want to make whatever, like whatever.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Say if you want to make 85 an hour, 75 an hour, whatever it is, you just want to make that on every piece of work that you do.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, more.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: Hopefully you can make a hundred an hour.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: That's even better.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: But more is better, and just you know, if you can do the work and make your rate, that's kind of what you're going for.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: And then if you like the work too.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and if uh and like if you're if you're starting out, you are gonna it uh you can take work to generate momentum.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Maybe you're trying to get in with somebody or like prove that you're a good painter or whatever, you might drop things a little bit, but eventually where you want to end up is that your rate is your rate, regardless of who you're working for.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: One of my uh one of my wife's friends, she uh Linda, we did work, we've done work for her before, and then she had uh talked to me about doing a god-awful job for her daughter, uh, where it was like basically the whole house needed to be been shellacked, uh, and it was it needed to get done in like a day or whatever, and it was like a 2,500 square foot house.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: I was like, you're not gonna, you know, yeah, we're not a good fit.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: You're not gonna like my price for that.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Uh it's just not gonna work out.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then she said she she said when I uh did an estimate at her house, one of the things that uh she asked, she's like, So is this is is uh do you have a like friends and family rate?
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: And then I she said what and this was must have been years ago because I don't remember saying this, but it totally sounds like something I would say.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: She she said that I said if we had a friends and family rate, you would totally get it, but we do not.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: And like I was like, yeah, that does sound like something I would say.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: Because it's still it's still the work.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the work is the work.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Like your house isn't any easier for me to paint if you're my friend or I know you.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: I don't give a shit.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: Like it's the work is the work.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: So the walls are the walls, and that's kind of that's uh hypothetically though, sometimes there's a cash discount.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: Just hypothetically.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Completely hypothetically, if there were to be a discount, cash may or may not play uh into the equation.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: But you know, that's just hypothetical.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: But none of you, none of you painters know what we're talking about.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Get out of here, guys.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Who would do that?
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Who would do that?
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: I totally love all the stuff that's taxes, taxes, yeah.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: Government, they're doing great, doing great, spending money wisely.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: They're man, they're on top-notch distribution of wealth and all of that.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Call it good resource allocation.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Oh man, yeah, yeah, they're they're great.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: We just hit 40 trillion dollars in debt or something.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: I'm sure they'll turn it around.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: Anyway, uh, yeah.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: So we'll talk about taxes another time.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: That's what I can talk about for a long time.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: Especially I think it's different when you get all the full amount, because most people, when they work, they already get all their taxes taken out.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: And they go, Oh, good, I got some back.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: But when you get the full amount gross, and then you you everything just leaves with taxes and fees and payroll this and accounting and all that stuff, you go, whoa, yeah, that's a lot of money.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: I had a thousand, now I have six hundred fifty bucks.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: What happened?
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it blows.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: You're like, this sucks.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: And then you go, what do they spend the money on?
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: And then you uh then you just cry.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: And if you live in PA, you're like, well, thank God they're staying on top of all these potholes.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Guys are just the infrastructure is yeah, yeah.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Anyway, I I think that's we're we're pretty good.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: So uh join the goo crew if you're listening to this and you hear us rant about taxes or uh or you know, quality.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: But like anyway, well, Todd was in there just asking questions and we're getting some feedback and just asking questions like uh, hey man, what what what price do you charge to make a good rating?
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: And that's kind of what you want to get.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and we're gonna start doing probably more at the front end of the show.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: Try to like uh with this podcast part of it, is we're gonna be uh talking a lot about what guys are talking about in the comments in the general discussion board.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Um so uh if you DM us privately, we're not gonna put you on blast, but we'll if you're in the in the community, we can talk about on the podcast.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: And then we want because we really want to make this a good touch point for everybody to like you know have us talk about what you guys are actually dealing with, what we're dealing with uh right now.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: So, like on the job I'm on, because we we have a few minutes still, uh only yeah.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm refinishing a staircase that was installed by a company that all they do is stairs.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: And uh I'm trying to do it before they put the spindles in.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: The spindles are gonna be like metal, so they're like the black, you know, wrought iron or whatever.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: And uh they installed the stairs and then they so I think the stairs the treads are all like oak, and they stapled this cork board into the treads to like protect them.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: But they're literally stapled into these new treads.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: So then like I took off a couple.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Of them yesterday.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Super hard to get off.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: And then I had to take pliers and yank these staples out.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: Like it ripped the cork off and kept them in there.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: And then they had a sheet of plastic underneath.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: And it's just like because once the installers leave and I start messing with it, I'm like taking ownership of what this thing's gonna look like now.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: And they also filled the nail holes in the treads on like the bull nose, because it's a squared-off bull nose, which is like the edge of the tread.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: Uh they filled it with non-stainable filler.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: It'd be like if you smeared the orange filler from Sheron Williams in it.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: And I'm looking at it's just when I stain it, it's just gonna look like white blotches everywhere.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: Uh so I what I get to do today is take my uh carpenter's knife and dig out all of the shit that they puttied.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, which is for every tread.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: For every tread.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: And it's around the lip of the tread because the treads are exposed on two sides, like on the front and then the sides.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: So then I've got to dig all of that out.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: There's I there's almost no chance it's gonna stain well.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: The stain's not dark enough to take in that stuff.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: So now I'm like, okay, how would I because if you're the finish guy, uh you're I can't you can't like I I because I did those so they came with it pre-assembled.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Like the the stairs came pre-assembled.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: So they did this back at I can't be like, hey, don't do that.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: They just pooped them in there and then bounced.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: So and then now I've got to like make it not look like crap.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: And you're like, hey, but if they didn't put wood filler in there, it would be a lot better.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Just don't fill it, dude.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just don't fill it.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: Let me fill it.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: Because what if if anyone's doing stain work, like the way that I do it, and I'm not saying I'm the best at it or whatever, but I'm halfway decent.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: He's pretty good.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: The I always stain first.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: I don't even touch, I don't fill any of the holes.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: I stain first, I put one coat of poly on, and then I fill with tinted wood filler.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: That's and you really want to go darker than what the stain is, it's just your eye's not going to pick it up as much.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: So fill it, and then you don't want to smear a bunch of it outside the hole.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: You keep it nice and tight, and then usually what I do is I take a little bit of mineral spirits and wipe over the hole so that it's just inside, it's it's just filled the nail hole.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: It's not like a big fingerprint smudge on the outside.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Because this the poly and stain will take that differently too.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: And then you just rip two more coats of poly over top of the uh the filled holes, and you it like they they're really hard to see.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: But so that's what I'm doing today.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: I get to dig out a bunch of, I would say I'm gonna dig out maybe 200 nail filled nail holes.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: Sounds awesome, yeah.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: So anyway, that's my little soapbox for the day.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Well, good luck, sir.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: Thanks.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you you're doing staining, but I don't know.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: It's not as it's off, yeah.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: It's much easier than that.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, cool.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: Well, is there anything else you want to chat about or wrap up or join the goo crew, make some comments, and maybe we can uh talk about what what you're working on?
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: All right, fellas, and and gals, if there are any of those around.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: There's one or two.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: All right, cool.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, shout out to all the fine goo crew folks.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: Alrighty, we'll see you all in the next one.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Peace.
