- 0:10Hello friends, it's Shawn here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:14It is the 30th of July. And thank you for inviting me
- 0:19into the rhythm of your day so that you and I can read this
- 0:25chapter together. This is not an easy chapter to
- 0:28read. Oh, Gee, I find these hard.
- 0:31This is the chapter that John writes to record the crucifixion
- 0:36of Jesus. And as we read this, everything
- 0:40in US screams out how wrong, how incredibly wrong this was.
- 0:44But at the same time, it's because of how unjust it was
- 0:50that Jesus was able to do this to rescue you and me from our
- 0:55wrongdoing and reunite us with the Father for eternity.
- 0:59Incredible, incredible, incredible, but a tough read.
- 1:03So that is today we are going to read this together.
- 1:06And then tomorrow, oh, the glorious resurrection will be
- 1:09celebrated. But that is, then we've got to
- 1:11get through today first. So friends, let us steal
- 1:15ourselves, open our hearts as we read together.
- 1:18John chapter 19 Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead tipped
- 1:33whip. The soldiers wove a crown of
- 1:36thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on
- 1:40him. Hail King of the Jews, they
- 1:43mocked as they slapped him across the face.
- 1:47Pilate went outside again and said to the people, I am going
- 1:51to bring him out to you now, but understand clearly that I find
- 1:56him not guilty. Then Jesus came out wearing the
- 2:00crown of thorns and the purple robe and Pilate said, look, here
- 2:06is the man. When they saw him, the leading
- 2:10priests and temple guards began shouting, crucify him, crucify
- 2:15him, take him yourselves and crucify him.
- 2:19Pilate said, I find him not guilty.
- 2:24The Jewish leaders replied, By our law he ought to die because
- 2:28he called himself the Son of God.
- 2:31When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.
- 2:35He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked
- 2:38him, Where are you from? But Jesus gave no answer.
- 2:44Why don't you talk to me? Pilate demanded.
- 2:48Don't you realise that I have the power to release you or
- 2:52crucify you then? Jesus said you would have no
- 2:57power over me at all unless it were given to you from above.
- 3:03So the one who handed me over to you has the greatest sin.
- 3:08Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders
- 3:11shouted, If you release this man, you are no friend of
- 3:15Caesar. Anyone who declares himself a
- 3:17king, he's a rebel against Caesar.
- 3:21When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again.
- 3:25Then Pilate sat down on the judgement seat on the platform
- 3:28that is called the stone Pavement in Hebrew Gabatha.
- 3:33It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover,
- 3:38and Pilate said to the people, Look, here is your king.
- 3:44Away with him, they yelled. Away with him, crucify him.
- 3:48What, crucify your king? Pilate asked.
- 3:53We have no king but Caesar. The leading priest shouted back.
- 3:58Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified.
- 4:04So they took Jesus away, carrying the cross by himself.
- 4:08He went to the place called Place of the Skull in Hebrew,
- 4:13Gol Gotha. There they nailed him to the
- 4:16cross. Two others were crucified with
- 4:21him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.
- 4:26And Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read Jesus of
- 4:30Nazareth, the King of the Jews. The place where Jesus was
- 4:36crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew,
- 4:41Latin, and Greek so that many people could read it.
- 4:45Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate,
- 4:49Change it from the king of the Jews to he said, I am the king
- 4:53of the Jews. Pilate replied, No, what I have
- 4:58written, I have written. When the soldiers had crucified
- 5:04Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them.
- 5:08They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece
- 5:12from top to bottom. So they said, rather than
- 5:15tearing it apart, let's throw a dice for it.
- 5:19This fulfilled the scripture that says they divided my
- 5:22garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing.
- 5:27So that is what they did. Standing near the cross were
- 5:31Jesus mother and his mother's sister Mary, the wife of Cleopas
- 5:37and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother
- 5:41standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to
- 5:44her, Dear woman, here is your son.
- 5:49And he said to the disciple, Here is your mother.
- 5:53And from then on this disciple took her into his home.
- 5:59Jesus knew that his mission was now finished and to fulfil
- 6:03scripture. He said, I am thirsty.
- 6:07A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge
- 6:10in it, put it on a hyssop branch and held it up to his lips.
- 6:14When Jesus had tasted it, he said it is finished.
- 6:21Then he bowed his head and gave up his Spirit.
- 6:26It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn't
- 6:29want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the
- 6:32Sabbath and a very special Sabbath because it was Passover
- 6:35week. So they asked Pilate to hasten
- 6:38their death by ordering that their legs be broken.
- 6:41Then their bodies could be taken down, so the soldiers came and
- 6:45broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus.
- 6:49But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already
- 6:52dead, so they didn't break his legs.
- 6:55One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear
- 6:59and immediately blood and water flowed out.
- 7:02This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate
- 7:06account. He speaks the truth so that you
- 7:09also may continue to believe these things happened in
- 7:14fulfilment of the scriptures that say not one of his bones
- 7:18will be broken and they will look on the one they pierced.
- 7:26Afterward, Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple
- 7:30of Jesus because he feared the Jewish leaders, asked Pilate for
- 7:34permission to take down Jesus body.
- 7:37When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body
- 7:40away. With him came Nicodemus, the man
- 7:44who would come to Jesus at night.
- 7:47He brought about 75 lbs of perfumed ointment made from myrh
- 7:51and aloes. Following Jewish burial customs,
- 7:55they wrapped Jesus body with the spices in long sheets of linen
- 7:59cloth. The place of crucifixion was
- 8:02near a garden where there was a tomb never used before.
- 8:06And so because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish
- 8:09Passover, and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus
- 8:15there. Oh Jesus, our living Saviour, we
- 8:29thank you that this is not the end of the story.
- 8:32If this were the end, our faith would be utterly useless.
- 8:36But no, no, you had more in mind, more to your story than
- 8:42just this. Lord, we worship you.
- 8:47You are an almighty death conquering Saviour.
- 8:51And we are so, so incredibly excited at what you were able to
- 8:58achieve on that cross for the whole of humanity and for us,
- 9:03for each one of us, because you love us.
- 9:07The fact that it's so hard for us to wrap our heads around, but
- 9:11oh Jesus, we are so grateful for you and your sacrifice and your
- 9:15love. And we look forward to tomorrow
- 9:18continuing reading this story. But Jesus, we celebrate you, a
- 9:25loving, living Saviour, and it's in your name that we pray.
- 9:32Amen.
