Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Imagine opening a routine software renewal for your company and seeing like
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: a 400% price increase.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: Just boom.
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: Your entire budget is completely blown out of the water.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, it sounds like a glitch, right?
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: But that is the actual reality for so many IT departments right now.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: The fallout is just massive.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Wait, 400%?
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Take Tesco, for instance.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: They are migrating 40,000 virtual machines off their current systems entirely,
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: literally just to escape those exact price hikes.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, so in today's deep dive,
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: we really need
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: to figure out how companies can actually survive this Broadcom acquisition
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: of VMware.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Because as your existing VMware terms end,
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: simply auto-renewing your contract is, well, it's just no longer an option for you.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Right, exactly.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: And to understand the corner that IT leaders are backed into,
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: you first have to look at how Broadcom fundamentally changed
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: the whole business model.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, they completely eliminated perpetual licenses.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Meaning you can't just buy the software outright anymore.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And they killed off the free version of your primary hypervisor too, PSXI.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: So now everything is this mandatory subscription.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: And it's not even just how you pay, right?
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: It's the packaging.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: They stripped away the ability to buy individual tools.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah,
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: they crammed everything into these massive bundles like VMware Cloud Foundation
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: and vSphere Foundation.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: It's like only wanting your local sports channel.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: But the cable provider forces you to buy the 500 channel mega package and charges you quadruple.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: That is a perfect way to describe it.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And the squeeze definitely goes beyond just the bundles too.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Like in April 2025, they rolled out a retroactive 20% penalty if you're late on your renewal.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: A retroactive penalty.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: That's brutal.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, it gets worse.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: On top of that, they instituted a 72 core minimum licensing requirement per command line.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Wait, what does that actually mean in practice?
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Well, it means every single environment you spin up requires you to purchase
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: at least 72 cores worth of computing power licensing.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Even if your actual physical server only has, say, 16 cores, you're paying for 72.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Yikes.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Which brings us to the enforcement mechanism,
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: I guess, because Broadcom didn't just change the pricing.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: They actually restricted who can even sell and support this software now.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: They terminated 95 percent of their premier cloud service partners.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Just cut them off entirely.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Leaving only that highly exclusive tier, right?
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: The ones they call pinnacle partners.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And the mechanism here is brutal for the end user because
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: if your current managed service provider didn't make that top 5% cut,
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: they legally cannot host
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: or support your VMware environments anymore once their terms expire.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: So your provider loses the license,
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: meaning you are forced into a migration just to keep the lights on.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: You can't just quietly renew with your old IT guy.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: No, you really can't.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So with those forced bundles and the partner call,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: plus that October 2027 end of support deadline for vSphere 8 coming up fast,
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: companies are on a serious ticking clock.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: But ripping out VMware entirely is terrifying for those companies.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: And it's not just a quick software swap.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: VMware acts as the central nervous system of your entire data center.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: It anchors your networking, your storage, backups, disaster recovery.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Tearing all that out takes, you know, 10 to 12 months.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: And the labor and downtime, that can cost up to $3,000 per virtual machine.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Jeez.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: So if the ecosystem is really that tangled,
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: migrating to a new infrastructure as
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: a service provider right now feels incredibly risky.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Like, why wouldn't a company just bite the bullet,
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: pay the 400% markup, and keep their infrastructure as is?
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: that comes down to a strategy we call stacking pain points because you have to look
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: at your broader timeline.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: What do you mean by that?
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, you likely don't just have a VMware licensing hike to deal with.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: You probably have aging hardware that needs a physical refresh soon or maybe
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: an off-site data center colo agreement that's up for renewal.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Ah, I see.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: So by moving to a certified Pinnacle partner's managed infrastructure as a service
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: or disaster recovery as a service, you basically perform a strategic risk swap.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Precisely.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: You trade the technical nightmare of ripping out your hypervisor for
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: the financial safety of offloading your hardware lifecycle.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: You skip the massive capital expense of buying new physical servers entirely.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: And you stabilize your monthly costs.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Plus, since the Pinnacle Partner manages the licensing at scale,
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: you completely dodge paying
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: for all those unneeded software features Broadcom stuffed into the new bundles.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: So the window for just passive IT management is officially closed.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And, you know,
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: looking at the macro level here,
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: this whole situation raises a really provocative question for the industry.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: If a single vendor acquisition can completely upend global IT infrastructure
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: and just hold corporate budgets hostage like this,
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: should companies start designing all future architectures
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: to be totally hypervisor agnostic from day one?
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Treating core virtualization as a disposable commodity rather than
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: a foundational anchor that you can't escape.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: That is definitely something to mull over before you sign off on a massive markup.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Well, keep a close eye on those renewal dates and whatever you do,
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: don't get caught paying for a 500 channel package you don't even watch.
