- 0:56You're already taking the first step. just by
- 1:00joining us here today. Yeah there's a there's
- 1:04an elementary age book that uh my kids had and
- 1:08it's a great book and I forget the exact title
- 1:10but it's the book is basically about being a
- 1:12bucket filler and in short people you interact
- 1:15with either you take out of their bucket or you
- 1:19fill their bucket and a simple smile is putting
- 1:21something in their bucket uh you know a compliment
- 1:25a notion of gratitude That's been a bucket filler.
- 1:28When people interact with you, do they leave
- 1:30that interaction feeling better about themselves
- 1:32and feeling more happy? Or do they leave feeling
- 1:34like there was a drain on their energy, right?
- 1:37If you're saying negative things to people, if
- 1:39you're telling them about your problems, that's
- 1:41a pain. And these are people you love. I'm talking
- 1:43family, friends. You may have someone who, every
- 1:47time you talk to them, you leave that conversation
- 1:50feeling drained or emotionally tapped. and those
- 1:54are the people you have to to to manage right
- 1:57and they're energy suckers or energy vampires
- 1:59so you do have to manage that and figure out
- 2:01how do you balance that and it's not to say you
- 2:04can cut off you know your your cousin or your
- 2:06mom or whoever that person is in your life who
- 2:09always is calling you with problems but you can
- 2:11minimize those interactions You can, you know,
- 2:15cut it short to a five minute, a 10 minute, whatever
- 2:17it is, and then move on and spend more time with
- 2:20people who help you feel better and, you know,
- 2:22fill your spirit and help you see things in a
- 2:25brighter way. Because ultimately you do have
- 2:27to protect your energy and that's really important
- 2:29too because you can't be the best version of
- 2:32yourself if you're giving the best version of
- 2:34yourself to everyone else and you're not taking
- 2:36the time to, you know, pour into the things that
- 2:39you need and to make sure you're taking care
- 2:41of yourself. I know. Absolutely. And it's also,
- 2:44there's a couple of other things that happen
- 2:46too. So one of the things I really live by is
- 2:50people aren't going to always remember what you
- 2:52said or what you did, but they're always going
- 2:54to remember how you made them feel. It's a my
- 2:56Angela quote, Angela quote. And I know I butcher
- 2:59it, but that's truly how I feel. I, I don't really
- 3:03care. Some of the things I say, I mean, people
- 3:06laugh, it's funny or whatever, but when people
- 3:09are no longer around me, I want them to still
- 3:11feel happy and feel like I helped them feel happy
- 3:15because that's something I want to do. I don't
- 3:16want people to feel like I tore them down or
- 3:19I made them feel bad about themselves because
- 3:20that is not something I ever want to do. And
- 3:23by knowing that about myself and showing up as
- 3:27that person when I show up places, it's been
- 3:29really helpful because there are off days. There
- 3:33are days when I've been listening to somebody
- 3:36talk about the same syndication for six months
- 3:39they're raising for the third time on the same
- 3:42freaking deal and i'm sick of hearing about it
- 3:44and i'm like oh my god are you ever going to
- 3:47be done with this thing and that happened to
- 3:49me one time and there was somebody that had just
- 3:52met me that was that heard that conversation
- 3:54and a friend came up to me later and said angel
- 3:58holy night i heard you were like yelling at somebody
- 4:01i'm like i was not somebody And this guy was
- 4:05like, well, you know, I took up for you. And
- 4:06I said, that is absolutely not Angel. That's
- 4:08not who she is. He said, I knew you were having
- 4:11an off day, but this person had never met you
- 4:13before. I was like, well, that sucks. And I don't
- 4:16know how to redeem that relationship, but I know
- 4:19I need to work on that relationship again. And
- 4:22I need to reach out to that person. I need to
- 4:23try and salvage what can be salvaged out of that
- 4:27relationship. But it was really cool to know
- 4:29that I had an off day and enough people know
- 4:33who I am and who I show up as that they were
- 4:36taken up for me. So Angela, let's talk about
- 4:38that, right? Because you and I had a conversation
- 4:40last year and we won't go into the specifics,
- 4:42but you know, when your personal brand takes
- 4:44a hit, right? And we spend a lot of time and
- 4:47energy, you know, developing this personal brand
- 4:49and being a person of character and being a person
- 4:51of a word. And when you hear stories about yourself
- 4:54or when maybe you either it's true and you you
- 4:57weren't able to deliver against the person branch
- 5:01you've built. or you hear stories that are simply
- 5:03untrue, or maybe there's information missing,
- 5:06that can be painful, right? It's hurtful when
- 5:08you feel like you're doing everything you can
- 5:09to take care of a person, a situation, and things
- 5:13like that, and you get this hit. And companies
- 5:15go through this as well, right? I mean, you have
- 5:16PR crisis. Companies, obviously, you never want
- 5:19something bad to happen with your product and
- 5:21service, but it happens, right? And how do you
- 5:24overcome that? You have a deal that maybe doesn't
- 5:26pan out as well, or people feel like they were
- 5:28misled on the communication. It's tough, right?
- 5:31And I think the one thing you can do is always
- 5:33be honest. One, be grateful that someone brought
- 5:35it to your attention and they're expressing it
- 5:37because sometimes you just have no idea. And
- 5:39I think you want to be grateful for that. You
- 5:41also want to take the chance to address it, you
- 5:44know, give your side of the story facts. I'm
- 5:46not saying to defend yourself, but I am saying
- 5:49that understand what's happening and maybe where
- 5:51there is a miscommunication and then see what
- 5:54you can do to fix it. But I think wallowing in
- 5:59the emotional side of it, that's not really helpful,
- 6:02especially if you're running a business, but
- 6:04I do think it's really important to reevaluate,
- 6:06hey, something went on here where there was a
- 6:09disconnect in who we are, what we said we were
- 6:12gonna do, what we were gonna present, and maybe
- 6:16what this person felt or what is actually taking
- 6:18place. And then how can I correct that? Sometimes
- 6:21you can do it. Sometimes you simply can't. Sometimes
- 6:23you look at the greater picture and you say,
- 6:26hey, you know what? I know we said this, you
- 6:28know, something happened. Something's different.
- 6:32This is where we're at. And you leave it there.
- 6:34But I think it is really important to do that
- 6:36because at the end of the day, it comes back
- 6:38to character and your own, not just personal
- 6:41brand, but people want to know that even when
- 6:45things are bad, you're going to stand up and
- 6:48be there. And that's something that's not talked
- 6:50about as much. It's easy to be happy when everything
- 6:52is great. Everyone's got an easy brand when things
- 6:55are good. Who are you when things go bad? Who
- 6:57are you when things get tough? Who are you when
- 7:00there is a disagreement? That's what people really
- 7:02need to understand is that this is somebody who
- 7:05is still going to listen to you, is still going
- 7:07to be respectful, is still going to share their
- 7:10perspective, even if we disagree. Even if we
- 7:13disagree, I can at least respect you. And I think
- 7:16that's really important if you're gonna do business
- 7:18with someone is that that level of respect has
- 7:20to be there. I respect you, you respect me. We
- 7:23can disagree. Every business, you should have
- 7:25some disagreements if you're gonna work together,
- 7:27but that respect needs to be there. And there
- 7:30should be enough respect and I guess acceptance
- 7:36or understanding that you're able to talk to
- 7:39individuals to work through. whatever that challenge
- 7:42is, you know, and to be able to have those open
- 7:44lines of communication because you know that
- 7:47this person isn't coming from a malicious place.
- 7:50So I think that's always important as well as
- 7:52how do you get in front of that in your situation?
- 7:54You know, if you had that conversation with the
- 7:57person, you know, I'm sure it wasn't malicious.
- 8:00Maybe it was the timing of things. Maybe you
- 8:02said things a little harsher because we're people,
- 8:04right? You might have had a rough morning, might
- 8:06have a rough day. And you're like, ah, here's
- 8:08a guy that goes again with that, right? And maybe
- 8:11you just didn't mean it to come out the way it
- 8:13did. And maybe it wasn't as harsh, but people
- 8:15know you so well that they can read between the
- 8:19lines as far as where you were. So that's always
- 8:21a challenge, too. And I would say, we can't harp
- 8:23on it. I think you waste a lot of energy trying
- 8:26to be perfect for everyone. That's not the goal.
- 8:29The goal is not to be loved by every single person.
- 8:31But if you If you truly did something wrong or
- 8:35you miscommunicate or someone feels a certain
- 8:38way, I do think it's important to try to address
- 8:40it to the best that you can to make sure at least
- 8:43that individual knows where you're at. And again,
- 8:45it may not fix the situation, but it goes to
- 8:49show that, hey, at least this person cares. And
- 8:52they at least want to talk through it and do
- 8:54what they could. And any company with customer
- 8:56service, that's what you're going to do. You
- 8:57want to take the time to say, hey, I can't solve
- 9:00every issue. but I at least want to hear your
- 9:02concerns what happened and then see if there
- 9:05is anything that we can do if not now at least
- 9:07moving forward. Well I think that goes back to
- 9:10the idea too of yes first impressions are incredibly
- 9:13important but so are second impressions. And
- 9:17can you bounce back from what happened in the
- 9:20first impression to create a second impression?
- 9:23That's why businesses do reach out to those people
- 9:25that put up negative comments on their, on their
- 9:28Amazon or on their business page or wherever,
- 9:31because the second impression is also incredibly
- 9:34important. And so I will try and reach out to
- 9:37people like, especially if it's somebody that
- 9:40I really care about the friendship and I honor
- 9:42the friendship. I think not necessarily that
- 9:44it's my duty, but I feel like I kind of need
- 9:47to to be like, hey, I don't know if this is what's
- 9:51going on, but this person was hurt. And so they
- 9:54said this, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only
- 9:55person they said it to. And so how do I help
- 9:58you as my friend? How do I help you bounce back
- 10:02from that? And I think that that's important.
- 10:05And the first person that I ever saw do it was
- 10:07Sandy Shadrian. She called me one day. She was
- 10:09like, hey, I think this happened and I think
- 10:14it was wrong because the first time it happens,
- 10:19it's a shock to you. You're like, holy crap,
- 10:21somebody's calling me out. But then you walk
- 10:25through it, you fix it. And number one, it makes
- 10:27that friendship way stronger. And it also gives
- 10:30you confidence in who you are. And it gives you
- 10:35confidence to be able to apologize and to to
- 10:38bounce back from things that happen because things
- 10:40are going to happen. And there's really no way
- 10:43around that. Yeah. Now, reputation management
- 10:46is key. I mean, if you're going to build a personal
- 10:47brand, you don't take all that time and energy
- 10:49to build it and then not manage the reputation.
- 10:52So, and whether you're doing it as an apartment
- 10:54community, you know, you want to have that online
- 10:57management system set up where you're looking
- 10:59at reviews, you're understanding what complaints
- 11:01people have. If you're a real estate investor,
- 11:04syndicator, contractor, you want to get that
- 11:06feedback from your clients, your partners, your
- 11:08investors and understand, hey, what are the concerns?
- 11:11And again, some of that you can address. some
- 11:13of that you can't. I'm not saying to defend it,
- 11:17like the goal was not to sit there and give an
- 11:19excuse for an explanation for every single thing
- 11:22that happens or complaints that people have.
- 11:25But it is to understand what's the feedback,
- 11:28how do we address this situation and assure things
- 11:30like this don't happen before. And if you can
- 11:32do that, that's what I think people really respect,
- 11:35at least to listen to them, take that under advisement,
- 11:38let them know that you hear them, you understand
- 11:40their concerns. And then if you are doing something
- 11:42to address it, I would let them know, hey, we're
- 11:45working on that right now. We're hoping to eliminate
- 11:47this issue before. If it's something that you
- 11:50really can't address or you feel like it's a
- 11:51one -off, then I think you can let them know
- 11:53that too. But again, your point to be heard,
- 11:56I think for most people, that's really their
- 11:58goal is, hey, you know, I just want to voice
- 12:01my opinion. I feel like I was wronged in some
- 12:03way. It could be a price. on something. The application
- 12:07fee was too high. It could be whatever it is,
- 12:09right? But ultimately, if you can communicate
- 12:11that, I think that goes well for you and your
- 12:14personal brand and the level of customer service
- 12:16that you're looking to deliver. Well, I think
- 12:18it also helps you get in front of a problem.
- 12:23Once you've had some experience with it, with
- 12:24someone saying, hey, this wasn't cool, and you
- 12:27start addressing, oh, sorry that that wasn't
- 12:29cool. Let's talk about it. Then you can start
- 12:31getting in front of issues. And if you're syndicating,
- 12:34again, there's going to be issues, and you can
- 12:37get in front of those and get that in your newsletter
- 12:39and address it. If one investor is having an
- 12:43issue with something more than one investor is
- 12:44having an issue with something, if that is, you
- 12:48know, decreased distributions or missing distributions,
- 12:52or maybe they're not happy with expenses or the
- 12:55NOI isn't where it should be. Maybe you're not
- 12:57meeting your projections. You need to get in
- 12:59front of that. and be able to communicate that
- 13:02to your investors. Because like I said, if one
- 13:04investor is having a problem with it, more than
- 13:06one investor is having a problem with it. So
- 13:08be grateful for the one that reached out to you.
- 13:10And then try and get in front of the problem.
- 13:13And just like you said, don't get defensive.
- 13:16But like if you can't change the price of your
- 13:19electricity contract, what are you doing to fix
- 13:22things? Are you looking at solar? Are you looking
- 13:24at adding in wind? Are you looking at some way
- 13:27to address the issue? because that's going to
- 13:29go a long way showing that you're trying to fix
- 13:31the problem. And that's part of your brand too.
- 13:36Yeah, that's a great point. But anyway, thank
- 13:39you for being here and for being a part of my
- 13:41circle and for sharing your knowledge and information
- 13:44with the people out there that are listening.
- 13:47Thank you. Absolutely. Well, I appreciate you
- 13:50having me on. And again, branding is less about
- 13:54the promotions and the pulse you're making on
- 13:56social media. it's more about understanding the
- 13:59value you bring to the table and how can you
- 14:01help people, what makes you unique, and being
- 14:03able to convey that. And if you can do those
- 14:06things, you can build a very powerful personal
- 14:08brand that allows you to grow your portfolio
- 14:11and scale anything you're doing in the real estate
- 14:13space. And quite frankly, outside of real estate
- 14:15too. So it's really important to build it. You're
- 14:17building a personal brand whether you know it
- 14:18or not. It's just a matter of how much influence
- 14:21do you want to have on what people think about
- 14:22you. Awesome. So guys, you've heard it here.
- 14:27I would say get that VIP subscription so that
- 14:30you can join us on the live side and then you
- 14:31can come back and listen to this recording again,
- 14:34take your notes and remember once you get that
