- 0:14Timothy and as you're turning, there may also add that just
- 0:17because we are doing membership in this church.

- 0:24And so, if you are a guest or visitor here this afternoon,
- 0:27welcome. We're so blessed that you can
- 0:29sing with us and receive God's word together.
- 0:35We hope that you would leave here loving Jesus more than when
- 0:38you came in. That is our prayer for guests
- 0:41and members. So God bless you.
- 0:44If you're there in, second Timothy meet me in chapter 3.
- 0:48Anna meet me in verse 6 of chapter 3.
- 0:54And let's read and then we will pray.
- 0:58The spirit of God says, for among them are those who creep
- 1:01into households and capture weak woman burdened with sins and led
- 1:09astray by various passions. Always learning and never able
- 1:14to arrive at a knowledge of the truth just as jannes and jambres
- 1:19opposed Moses. So, these men also oppose the
- 1:22truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the
- 1:26faith. But they will not get very far
- 1:30for their Folly will be playing to all.
- 1:33As was that of those two men? Lord, we ask you today.
- 1:41Lord, we ask you today to help us understand these verses, but
- 1:45we thank you for a place for people that love your word and
- 1:49love. Would you honor our hunger for
- 1:51righteousness and Phyllis this afternoon?
- 1:54Lord. We confess our weakness or
- 1:56inability to understand or even to communicate this truth apart
- 2:01from the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 2:03And so Lord, we just we just call upon you with desperation.
- 2:07In our hearts, we want to know your mind, your heart, your will
- 2:12we want to know your character, your ways.
- 2:14So we pray o. God, that you would give us the
- 2:16attention that would be able to receive this word and totality
- 2:21and then the power to obey it the power to obey it, but we
- 2:26submit ourselves to you in this time in Jesus name, we pray.
- 2:30Amen. after Paul, for won't for Warren's of the deceptions that
- 2:37will come in the last days and the characteristics that will
- 2:41describe those who will Populate, the Earth. that will
- 2:46become normal, that will become praised and commended These past
- 2:53few weeks, we've been trying to understand these things
- 2:55separately but we we haven't touched on each of them.
- 2:57That's okay. But we come to the final portion
- 3:01of this text and we see that before the, the verses we read,
- 3:05we recognize that Paul is given Christians.
- 3:07A brief instruction in relation to how we should respond to the
- 3:11Future corruption, that has been prophesied in the scripture.
- 3:16And the summary of how Christians should apply this
- 3:19long list of Despicable practices.
- 3:22And attitudes is found at the end of verse 5, it's only three
- 3:25words really but it is deeply meaningful important for us to
- 3:28grasp. Paul tells Christians, Paul
- 3:31tells Believers. Paul tells Timothy after hearing
- 3:35about lovers of self and pride and by those who are
- 3:38disrespectful towards Authority and slanderous, he says avoid
- 3:43such people Avoid such people, that is the Christians take away
- 3:49of how we are to properly counter.
- 3:53The flood of Filth, that will that will come our way, maybe
- 3:57even our lifetime to avoid. Simply means to turn yourself
- 4:02away to keep yourself at a safe distance from those who are
- 4:05dominated by the flesh. But how was Timothy supposed to
- 4:09avoid something that was supposed to happen in the
- 4:11future? Is this not telling us of a day
- 4:14to come? Is that telling us about the
- 4:16people that will surface in a future time?
- 4:20Surely absolutely but for there to be a present application,
- 4:25implies something very important that the things, the evil
- 4:29beliefs and behaviors, that will be known, then are in operation
- 4:33right now. They are here, they were there
- 4:36in Timothy's day. They were there long before that
- 4:39and they're, they're here in America and 2022.
- 4:45So the understanding here is not is not to just see it as a
- 4:47future thing, but as a present reality and as we heard week
- 4:50after week, those things that we learn in verse 1, to verse 5
- 4:54will only intensify as we race towards the final hour before
- 4:58the return of Jesus Christ. Avoid such people is that really
- 5:04the best way to relate to those who are spiritual blindness?
- 5:09Who aren't hypocrisy, who are consumed with wickedness?
- 5:14Are we not supposed to reach those people?
- 5:16Are we not supposed to relate to those people?
- 5:19The answer is yes or no the answer is yes or no.
- 5:24God clearly tells us to avoid such people but remember back a
- 5:27few verses when he says that the servant of the Lord must I'm to
- 5:31everyone able to teach with patients with the hopes that
- 5:36some of them might be able to Escape From The Snare of Satan.
- 5:41Our participation and seeing people liberated from darkness
- 5:45is not possible unless we interact with such individuals.
- 5:51And therefore, we cannot mistakenly think that to avoid
- 5:54such people is equivalent to not engaging with these people.
- 6:01At the same time, Christian listen to me, there is a warning
- 6:05in these words to be extremely careful about who we entertain
- 6:12in our lives about who it is that we allow to have close
- 6:16proximity to us who we associate with, who we allow to be in our
- 6:20Inner Circle because I want to tell you today that there are
- 6:23many Christians who believe they have the restraining power.
- 6:27To resist, being influenced by others.
- 6:30And I want to tell you, you don't There are those who are
- 6:35convinced that they are impervious to the influences of
- 6:38attitudes and the actions of others, that it doesn't matter
- 6:42who they are around, who is around them.
- 6:44He had the Holy Spirit speaks candidly to Christians about
- 6:48this being a deception. This is a deception that
- 6:53Christians can fall under. And we are told by Paul in First
- 6:56Corinthians 15, do not be deceived Bad Company.
- 7:01Ruins good morals. We always emphasize on the
- 7:05second part Bad Company ruins good morals.
- 7:08And we forget the first aspect of that.
- 7:10Verse do not be deceived. Implying what Christians can be
- 7:17misled and thinking that I can have bad company without Then
- 7:21consequences. This is dangerous.
- 7:27There are many reasons why Christians would believe this.
- 7:30That they have some inner fortitude, where they can't be
- 7:33swayed by a person or a crowd into the wrong direction.
- 7:37Some think that it's just harmless that is just
- 7:40relationships. It's just, it's just just having
- 7:43time together. Others would think that, well,
- 7:48you know, it's just me being kind and, and that is what they
- 7:53work with. When in fact, they are really
- 7:54wanting to satisfy a fleshly pleasure by being associated.
- 7:58To some And yet, there are other good-hearted Christians that
- 8:03have good intentions, and they are willing to link themselves
- 8:07to others and be present. Have them be present in their
- 8:10lives for the sole purpose of saying, I want to win them to
- 8:12Christ. I want to I want to attract them
- 8:16to the gospel. I want to bring them closer to
- 8:20the truth and that is a noble, cause that is something that we
- 8:24should apply. That is something that we should
- 8:26Endeavor to do. But let me remind you this
- 8:29afternoon that as much as you might be trying to win some
- 8:32people, there are some people who want to win you There's some
- 8:38people who want to win, you away from Christ.
- 8:42When you away from Holiness who want to win, you away from the
- 8:46principles of God's word, you have to understand that today.
- 8:51But at the same time we also want to be present and those who
- 8:56are arrested by Satan and his lies.
- 8:58So what do we do? How do we work this out?
- 9:02Very simple, get wisdom. That is what Jesus told his
- 9:08original band of Soul winners, while he was on the earth.
- 9:11He says, behold, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves
- 9:14and what did he say? Be wise as what serpents and
- 9:18innocent as doves. That is very famous verse but
- 9:23people don't often quote what he says, next.
- 9:25The first few verse in Matthew 10, 17, that was Matthew 10:16
- 9:29after he says, be wise as serpents and innocent as doves,
- 9:34he goes on to say, beware of men.
- 9:39Beware of men. In other words, in your
- 9:44endeavors to relate build relationships.
- 9:49And your decisions are who you're going to let in, who
- 9:50you're going to keep at a distance.
- 9:52Be cautious, be alert, be Discerning, be realistic about
- 9:57people. There are some who actually want
- 10:00to lure, you away from the truth that you want to share as much
- 10:03as you want to help people. Can I remind you today that
- 10:05there are people out there that want to harm you I want to harm
- 10:09your testimony your relationship with Christ.
- 10:11You even physically, As much as you want to see people saved
- 10:16realize that there are some people who want to take
- 10:17advantage of your sacrificial love.
- 10:22So, this calls for a discernment, this calls for a
- 10:26wisdom. and if we don't, We may be inviting life-altering
- 10:32problems. That could have been avoided and
- 10:33that is exactly what Paul is. Teaching Timothy here in those
- 10:37verses that we read. The potential threats of some of
- 10:42those who are driven by carnal desires and those carnal desires
- 10:46are listed in verse 12, verse 5. And that's in essence.
- 10:50What Paul is telling Timothy is, hey Timothy, listen to me.
- 10:55Understand what I'm trying to say that you and your people
- 10:58need to learn to avoid other, some specifically, because as
- 11:04much as they might be spiritually, blind, there are
- 11:07some within that camp that are not just unaware, unbelieving.
- 11:10They are vicious. And they're out for blood.
- 11:16And they actually want to do more damage than you can
- 11:19imagine. And Timothy, I want to tell you,
- 11:22they are not immediately recognizable.
- 11:25Some of them have the appearance of godliness and that is the way
- 11:29they have their way, with those who are truly Godly.
- 11:32Didn't we read it? And verse 6 we are told for
- 11:36among them among who again the list of those people in verse 1
- 11:41to verse 5, notice how honest the Bible is, it doesn't say all
- 11:45of them, it says some of them. In other words, not everybody
- 11:50who is outside of Christ is a lethal threat to you.
- 11:54Not, everybody is a danger to you.
- 11:56Now everybody's going to lead you into deception or two ways
- 11:58of life that will be destructive, not everybody but
- 12:01some of them will Because some of them will that alone requires
- 12:04for us to be on guard and to seek God, for discernment.
- 12:09Who to avoid who to allow, who to permit and who to disregard.
- 12:15And these people here, some of them though, not all of them
- 12:19have the potential, they have a goal, they were Twisted
- 12:22ambition, and that is what we read to capture certain people.
- 12:27Timothy, I need to tell you something that there are people
- 12:29within the camp of those who do not obey Jesus Christ as Lord,
- 12:33who don't just not believe in the gospel, but they actually
- 12:36seek to take people captive And Paul is warning here, not a
- 12:45physical kidnapping but about those who are skillful and
- 12:49seducing, the Mind those who are able to trick people, the
- 12:54Apostle is most likely primarily warning about those who have
- 12:58false teaching and lure people into their damning Doctrine but
- 13:03it's not just limited to that. He could very well be speaking
- 13:07about those who have a cloak of Holiness, but it has since come
- 13:12to those who are naive in order to manipulate them so that they
- 13:15can take advantage of them physically.
- 13:21Financially. And everything in between, can I
- 13:25prove that to you go to the book of Jude with me right before the
- 13:28Book of Revelation? 1 chapter verse for Jude verse
- 13:334, we are told as we turn our Bibles there.
- 13:45For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were
- 13:49designated for this condemnation, ungodly people who
- 13:54pervert the grace of our God, into sensuality and deny, our
- 13:59only master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
- 14:03So there are people out there who not only attack the
- 14:06authority of God's word, but there are false people out there
- 14:09who take God's word twist it and Jude uses the word perverts it
- 14:14perverts. It isn't, it isn't a language to
- 14:17milk a verse for here who pervert, the grace of God.
- 14:20Right. Look at before that, who have
- 14:22crept in unnoticed, isn't it the same language that Paul uses in
- 14:26second Timothy? Verse 6 and chapter, 34 among
- 14:30them are those who creep into households.
- 14:35So what's the idea here is that they cunningly come off as
- 14:40knowledgeable and spiritual people?
- 14:43They come off as innocent and so innocent, do they come off that
- 14:47they are actually able to enter into people's personal domains
- 14:52and sit and have dinner with them and sit in their living
- 14:54rooms. And so they come into people's
- 14:58personal lives under false pretenses.
- 15:01And so it's not immediately seen they worm their way and they
- 15:05convince people falsely. And some of these imposters will
- 15:09create friendships friendships in order to lure people away
- 15:14from the gospel or not tonight, even believe it in the first
- 15:16place. But not just that there are some
- 15:19who actually build relationships through the shared love of a
- 15:23supposed gospel. when in fact they perverted practically and
- 15:29they seek to cause you to join them in their perversion, Of
- 15:34Truth. So we're not just merely talking
- 15:38about people who are clearly in lies about God or false
- 15:43religions. We're talking about those who
- 15:44pervert the grace of God. And listen, as much as you and I
- 15:51should feel safe in this Community of Faith, we should
- 15:54not be foolish, we should not be foolish to believe that there
- 15:58are not some who were willing to daringly enter into your Slither
- 16:03away. In order to do just that Lure
- 16:07some away. We cannot think for a moment and
- 16:12be ignorant of the schemes of the minions of Satan, to think
- 16:15that he just lurks outside. Oh no, he didn't just lurk
- 16:18outside. He seeks to lure those from
- 16:20within, from the protective care of Elders.
- 16:23And those who make up the body of that local church, you got to
- 16:27believe it. But these wolves are clever,
- 16:29man. They are clever, they know who
- 16:32to sniff out, they know exactly who to go for as a primary
- 16:36target. They don't just go for anybody.
- 16:39Paul is about to describe the Criterion who it is that these
- 16:42men specifically gravitate towards who it is that they
- 16:47often convince and draw away from the truth, either from
- 16:51initial belief. Or because there are weak in the
- 16:55faith into destructive Behavior. Read it again.
- 17:00Would you in verse 6? For among them are those to
- 17:03creep into households and capture weak woman.
- 17:09Weak woman. You can breathe woman.
- 17:16He's not saying all woman my sister's, he's not generalizing
- 17:20your sex. He speaking about a certain
- 17:23class of woman. He speaking about those that He
- 17:28by the spirit has observed. There is a pattern here. that
- 17:32when these false teachers in these false people come after to
- 17:36devour, they often initially come after those who are women
- 17:44And somebody cleverly pointed out that even from the
- 17:47beginning, when Satan slid with his way, to the first parents of
- 17:51humanity, he did not go to Adam first.
- 17:53He went to Eve, And those who Advocate error have followed his
- 17:58example ever since. Perhaps some would mistakenly
- 18:03think that the weakness of woman.
- 18:06Here, remember he's not saying all women are weak.
- 18:08He's being about a certain category of women who are weak.
- 18:12Some would probably think that this speaks of a unique gullible
- 18:16nastas or are trustworthy spirit that just just believes anything
- 18:21that they here and that would be a misinterpretation of what Paul
- 18:24is saying here. About weakness, the weakness
- 18:27that he is describing here speaks of a Frailty and
- 18:30morality. And in spirituality, he's not
- 18:35speaking about a less than average intelligence or ability
- 18:38to reason that is not the case at all.
- 18:42What he's saying about weakness is described in these verses,
- 18:47the weakness here is and what we just read.
- 18:49And what's profound about Paul's thoughts.
- 18:51Your, by the spirit is that these characteristics of what
- 18:54makes a woman or a man week is that it is connected to
- 19:00deception. Meaning if these things are true
- 19:04in a person's life they are more prone to being deceived and
- 19:07there are evil men out there who are fully aware of that and will
- 19:10take advantage of it. So let's look at these
- 19:13characteristics. Remember weakness is not.
- 19:15Speaking of all women, let me clarify weakness is speaking
- 19:19about a category of women who through pattern have fallen
- 19:22victim primarily to these evil men.
- 19:26Number one, We are told here, they are burdened with sins.
- 19:32They are burdened with sins. The idea of being burden here,
- 19:36speaks of having sins heaped, upon them, and experiencing the
- 19:41heavy guilt that wrongdoing often causes it speaks about a
- 19:46conscience that is tormented, almost it speaks about your past
- 19:50sins, or your present sins that stir up humiliation.
- 19:56That caused you to be disappointed in yourself to the
- 19:59point where it even affects your emotional stability.
- 20:03False teachers, please pay attention and false professing
- 20:07Christians love to play on people's shame and guilt.
- 20:14They loved it. They can smell it.
- 20:18And what they do often is that they cleverly seek to discover
- 20:23your secrets, your failures of the past, maybe your struggles
- 20:28in the present, because they realize that if having these
- 20:31insights, they can easily manipulate you.
- 20:37Sometimes that manipulation looks like promising, false
- 20:40relief, or false salvation. Is it not true that many people
- 20:46seek out spiritual things? When they've made a wreck of
- 20:49their lives? When because of their decisions
- 20:53they have been LED on a path of destruction and and emptiness
- 20:56and being void, they begin to seek out Transcendent realities
- 21:00and and that can be good because they can find the gospel but
- 21:04false teachers also want to present something that is not
- 21:06true. And so, sometimes oftentimes
- 21:11people who are burdened by their way of life, crushed by what
- 21:16they've done to people into themselves, begin to now yearn
- 21:19for something else, some answers to what can fill and help them,
- 21:24not realize their shame and help them distract themselves from
- 21:28their pain. And they are introduced to false
- 21:32teaching false teachers welcome to the world of Cults.
- 21:35You know how many Cults bring in people you know how they bring
- 21:38in people many reasons, one of them is this they bring a an
- 21:43invitation into a communal life. And that's a perversion of what
- 21:49we know in the church but they try to convince you of some
- 21:53satisfaction of some kind of love which is a false love.
- 21:55It's packaged with poison and people who are burdened by life,
- 22:00people who are lonely, people who have made decisions that
- 22:02have caused them to be in a certain place gravitate towards
- 22:05these false teachers because these false teachers gravitate
- 22:07towards them. But it's not just limited to
- 22:11that. People who are burdened with
- 22:14sins. These people who are false can
- 22:17smell it and they capitalize on it.
- 22:20Not to lead you into damning beliefs, but to use that as a
- 22:22weapon against you. And what these people will do is
- 22:26they will often smear your failures in your face especially
- 22:30when you do not give them what they ask of you.
- 22:35They know how to they know how to play on your guilt, in order
- 22:38to steer you in a certain direction.
- 22:41And if you don't believe what I am saying, this is biblical,
- 22:43this is a psychology, this isn't scripture.
- 22:45This is the strategies of those who are consumed with the Flesh
- 22:48and want to consume others to satisfy their flesh.
- 22:51Turn with me to Second Peter, chapter 2, verse 14.
- 22:55So remember there are those who come after people?
- 22:58Who are burdened with sins as Peter says, promising them
- 23:02Freedom while they themselves are slaves to corruption.
- 23:07That's the new age. That's every other religion
- 23:11apart from the true one promising, you Freedom while
- 23:14they themselves are slaves to corruption.
- 23:16But there are others who will manipulate those who are
- 23:19unsteady who are burdened in order to satisfy their sin.
- 23:25Second Peter 2, 14 proves it. This is a this is a context on
- 23:29false teachers and Peter says about these false teachers.
- 23:32They have eyes full of adultery. You know what that means?
- 23:35They are so consumed with lust that every woman they look at is
- 23:39it 10 shal fantasy to being fulfilled.
- 23:43Somebody that they can commit adultery with somebody that they
- 23:45can get to commit adultery with them there.
- 23:48Their eyes are full of adultery, they just see women as objects.
- 23:54But look how they do it. Look how they lure people, they
- 23:57have eyes full of adultery insatiable for sin.
- 23:59They entice unsteady Souls. They have hearts trained in
- 24:07greed, accursed children. I want to tell you that,
- 24:12Predators can easily detect those who have broken pasts.
- 24:21And they favor those kinds of people as prey because they
- 24:25know, they know that they have an advantage with somebody who
- 24:31is emotionally damaged. Or unstable and their soul or
- 24:36not anchored, who don't understand their identity in the
- 24:39freedom that they have in Jesus Christ have been set free by the
- 24:41knowledge of the truth. Burden with sins.
- 24:49These weak women are burdened with sins but not just burden
- 24:51with sins. They are LED was we what are we
- 24:54told and led astray by various passions.
- 24:56At the end of verse 6, this is not the same as the previous
- 24:59Point. What Paul is teaching here is
- 25:01that the communicating truth is that these women are driven by
- 25:04the flesh? Their decisions and their
- 25:09desires are not governed by the word of God.
- 25:12They are dominated by the natural mind.
- 25:16Now, by the influence of the indwelling power of the Holy
- 25:18Spirit by the Flesh, and notice he doesn't mention any
- 25:22particular sins, he says, LED astray by various passions,
- 25:27there is a wide spectrum of selfishness, that all have the
- 25:31same effect and they can include anything that we've studied over
- 25:34the past several weeks, from verses 1 to verse 5.
- 25:38It can be women, who are unrepentant of, pride of Gossip
- 25:43of slander of the Love of Money of materialism.
- 25:48But here's the main point because their lives are not
- 25:53governed by the spirit, they're easily Guided by the wrong
- 25:57people. To tolerate any sin can be
- 26:02catastrophic in many ways. But let me give you one
- 26:05consequence of sin that many do not consider When sin when a
- 26:11life of obedience is not repented of but cherished and
- 26:16embraced it blunts it. Dulls a person's ability to
- 26:21discern. It creates a fog.
- 26:28It does something to reason. It does something to your
- 26:32ability to see things as they are, as they should be seen.
- 26:37And there are so many examples, but the one verse that comes to
- 26:39mind that makes us so clear. It's found in the prophets book
- 26:45Hosea and 4:11. I believe this is worth turning
- 26:48your Bibles to to see the wisdom of God, concerning the
- 26:52consequences of sin. He speaking about his people,
- 26:58his people who were destroyed for, what a lack of what.
- 27:02Knowledge is the same chapter Hosea 4:6?
- 27:04My people are destroyed, what a powerful.
- 27:07Word destroyed shattered crushed because of a lack of knowledge.
- 27:14And then he goes on to say in Hosea, 411 and speaking about,
- 27:21The equation of lacking the truth of God.
- 27:24And the addition of this, look at this and verse 11, whoredom.
- 27:30Wine and new wine, which take away the understanding.
- 27:37Whoredom wine and new wine. It does something.
- 27:42It takes away understanding. Now, there's no debate that if a
- 27:49person is intoxicated with drink that, they lose their ability,
- 27:52at least a lot of ability to discern or to make right.
- 27:55Judgments. That's obvious.
- 27:58But what might not be obvious is that the Holy Spirit places in
- 28:01the same? Verse of the category of wine
- 28:04whoredom? A promiscuous, life Indulgence,
- 28:08sexual immorality. And would you have ever guessed
- 28:11that something like whoredom? Would have the same effects to
- 28:15the mind to the spirit of a man, as alcohol does to the body.
- 28:21Is anybody ever considered that? This sin can lead someone to
- 28:26just as much foolishness as a person?
- 28:29Who is intoxicated with alcohol can be That's why I'm Proverbs
- 28:366. We are told that he who commits
- 28:37adultery lacks sense. He lacks sense.
- 28:42She lacks sense. She didn't understand.
- 28:44He does understand what this is going to lead to.
- 28:47So there's an intoxicating influence from sin.
- 28:53And we see that in numbers 25 you don't have to turn there
- 28:55verse 1. When the sons of Israel are now
- 28:58committing whoredom with the daughters of Moab, they're
- 29:02getting involved physically with these Idol worshippers and then
- 29:06in the very next verse, we are told that they start worshipping
- 29:08these false gods. How did you go from Intimate
- 29:10Relationships to Bow before an idol?
- 29:12Well, because whoredom Takes away.
- 29:16Understanding. What about, what about an
- 29:18individual like, Solomon? That guy remember his community
- 29:22of wives that he had. what a tragic figure a man with so much
- 29:27wisdom, wisdom from God, wisdom to build God's house, but
- 29:30because because of a lust, A lust for power, political power,
- 29:36a Lust For Women obviously. That wisdom became blurred.
- 29:43And it's not just lust, my brother and sister, it's not
- 29:46just limited to whoredom and new wine.
- 29:49So if you've been with us on Friday nights, we have a case
- 29:51study of somebody who has lost all sense of perception,
- 29:55concerning his fellow man himself and God King Saul.
- 30:01Oh, the craziness of this man, believing things about God,
- 30:06believing things about the right people about the wrong people,
- 30:08it's just unfathomable. And where does it all start?
- 30:11From all, you just trace it back.
- 30:13He allowed pride and jealousy to rein in his heart.
- 30:18And that pride in jealousy, bread deception.
- 30:20And he couldn't see God, right? He could interpret events,
- 30:23right? He couldn't see the people,
- 30:25right? Sin impairs our judgment.
- 30:31This is why we should flee from it.
- 30:33Peter tells us to war against the passions of your flesh,
- 30:36because they wore against you. Sin is not some little pet that
- 30:40you can keep in your living room and visit once in awhile and
- 30:42feed when you're hungry, when she's hungry, no sin will
- 30:46destroy your life. It will shatter your life.
- 30:52I'm just blown away by how under emphasize sin is, And many
- 30:57puppets today. And if sin is cherished, if it
- 31:02is tolerated, listen, it should be no question that it would
- 31:05lead somebody to the wrong people and even to the wrong
- 31:08beliefs especially when those beliefs allow you to hold onto
- 31:12your sin. So Paul says these false
- 31:16teachers, these people have an appearance of godliness, even
- 31:18who might even hold a Bible. These people come after those,
- 31:22who are LED, not by the spirit, not by the word, but by the
- 31:25impulses of their flesh, Lastly says something quite
- 31:31interesting. In verse 7.
- 31:34Here's a third characteristic of those who are weak morally.
- 31:38Weak spiritually. There are always learning and
- 31:43never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.
- 31:48So this verse alone deals with any controversy about the
- 31:52weakness here being spoken of of being uneducated or
- 31:55simple-minded. That's not the case at all.
- 31:59In fact, the woman that Paul has in mind, when he is teaching on
- 32:01this demonstrate, great hunger for knowledge.
- 32:09They actually eager to acquire information and let's put it in
- 32:12our context. Some of these women can have
- 32:14their beees, they're amazed their phds.
- 32:18Some of them can be Avid readers, they can be students of
- 32:20History, they can be familiar with the political landscape.
- 32:23They can debate philosophy and they can even attempt to satisfy
- 32:28their spiritual pitch by listening to gurus and teachers
- 32:34who might even call themselves Christians, when in fact, they
- 32:37are not biblical. But with all of that education,
- 32:41with all of that acquirement of general knowledge would all of
- 32:44the questionable, faith-based teachings, that they are
- 32:48plugging into their ears through podcast.
- 32:51Paul has one main concern about these women, who are weak their
- 32:55biblically illiterate They're always learning.
- 33:01But they never arrived to the knowledge of the truth and
- 33:04primary, that means that they reject the gospel all together,
- 33:09but it's not limited to that the word knowledge here.
- 33:12Speaks about a correct and precise understanding.
- 33:16It's the same thing that Paul prayed for, for the Ephesians,
- 33:18when he says, oh that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened
- 33:22concerning the knowledge of Jesus Christ that you would have
- 33:25a precise laser focus understanding of Jesus, a deeper
- 33:30grasp of Truths of God. These women never arrived there.
- 33:36They don't, it's not speaking about you having a memorized
- 33:41Systematic, Theology. It's not about you being a
- 33:43theologian. It's more than that.
- 33:47Speaking about a disinterest, in the things of God.
- 33:52Speaking about a failure, to see the beauty of the gospel and
- 33:56wanting to discover deeper things in him.
- 33:59He speaks about not being governed by the authority of
- 34:02God's Sovereign word, And Hosea said it, my people are destroyed
- 34:07for a lack of knowledge. Blend it all together.
- 34:12Now, blend all these characteristics together.
- 34:15What do you have when a person either rejects or is this
- 34:19interested in discovering the glories of God's word?
- 34:23What's going to happen eventually you will settle for
- 34:26lesser things for cheaper. Substitutes that this world
- 34:29offers namely sins, namely idols.
- 34:34And when a person is ensnared, they are arrested by their sins
- 34:38and they are void of the fulfilling Fellowship that comes
- 34:41Through Jesus Christ, their candidates.
- 34:46They are more susceptible to being led astray.
- 34:50And sometimes being led astray means to believe heresy and
- 34:54other times, it means being used and abused by merciless people
- 34:59who claim to be religious. And sometimes they will abuse,
- 35:03you financially, just look at the false teachers that are
- 35:07being funded. And other times it can mean your
- 35:11body being used by somebody Who tricked you with a few verses to
- 35:18convince you that they were a man of God.
- 35:23We've been speaking about week woman so far and again it's not
- 35:26just limited to. Men are not exempt from this.
- 35:29So, if your man in this place, you think you can be week as
- 35:32well, but Paul again is seeing a pattern throughout history.
- 35:37By the spirit. He understands something
- 35:39specific. We've been speaking about week
- 35:41woman. Let me address my sister's this
- 35:43afternoon. As a brother.
- 35:47God wants you to be strong. God wants you to be strong
- 35:53strong and and a strength that the Bible describes, not as the
- 35:57world describes. Not not financially strong, not
- 36:01physically strong. Spiritually.
- 36:05Strong. I want you to be encouraged by
- 36:08this. I want you to leave here.
- 36:09Built up with these thoughts. It is very difficult to
- 36:13manipulate a woman. Who is secure in her adoption in
- 36:16Jesus Christ. Someone who has truly tasted the
- 36:21grace of God and seeks to grow in the knowledge of her savior.
- 36:25It's very difficult to move. So, study study your word.
- 36:31I know it's difficult. If you're a mom with babies
- 36:33running around, But that does not exempt you from the
- 36:38invitation of knowing your God. Jesus just as much as your
- 36:42savior, as your husband, savior, as your brother savior, there's
- 36:47this misconception that men should be more theologically
- 36:51discerning. And sophisticated and woman
- 36:55said, who asked Apollo's, how he felt when a couple came up to
- 36:59him, and the wife knew just as much as the husband study, know,
- 37:05your God be secure and understand these truths until it
- 37:09causes you to worship. Not so that you can answer
- 37:11questions. If somebody comes up to you to
- 37:13see if your knowledge, oh no to cause your heart to be ravished
- 37:17with the beauties of Jesus. Evil men will find it.
- 37:22Very problematic to persuade a lady who like Mary of Bethany,
- 37:28enjoy sitting at the feet of the Lord.
- 37:31Who is mesmerized by him, who eats his every word, how can you
- 37:34move a woman like that? When in that setting, there was
- 37:38so much distraction but she was focused on the bread of life.
- 37:43Oh, would you practice her posture?
- 37:47Even if it's just a few minutes a day before the hoodlums, get
- 37:50up. Before chores.
- 37:53Come would you learn to do it while you're doing those things?
- 37:56Just just practice the posture of looking at the Lord
- 38:01worshiping him. Spontaneously, receiving his
- 38:03words studying at talking about it with your husband talking
- 38:06about with your friends, if you're single Satan and his
- 38:11minions have little to work with. when they encounter a
- 38:15woman who is led by truth rather than emotions, Who take this
- 38:21word and determine how they discern.
- 38:25How they decide? How they even feel, no matter,
- 38:31who says what? Paul speaks of weak woman, but
- 38:36we pray that the woman of MBC would be strong strong.
- 38:41God wants you to be strong and brothers, encourage the woman
- 38:46spiritually. Encourage them, spiritually
- 38:50speak spiritual things, to them have conversations and be
- 38:53patient. Be loving.
- 38:57Ask questions, have debates. build up your sisters because
- 39:03there are evil men of there that want to manipulate take
- 39:07advantage of. We read here in verse 8.
- 39:13That if you are strong, you'll be able to avoid people, like
- 39:16who Paul is about to mention. Just as jannes and jambres
- 39:20opposed Moses. So these men also oppose the
- 39:24truth, men corrupted in mind, you might be thinking who would
- 39:28dare take advantage of people especially women Men who are
- 39:33corrupt in mind Twisted. Selfish driven by less.
- 39:38That's who they're not just out there.
- 39:42Sometimes they sit in places like this.
- 39:46Men corrupted in mind, and disqualified regarding the
- 39:49faith. Those names are not familiar.
- 39:52They're not familiar to me. It shouldn't be to you, you know
- 39:54why? Because only mentioned here, the
- 39:57only mention once in all of the Bible.
- 40:00And the debate is, where did Paul get these names?
- 40:02Because it is often believed that these men were the Two
- 40:05Chief magicians that stood against Moses, when Moses came
- 40:08against pharaoh to see his people set free.
- 40:11And so Jewish tradition claims that and we can spend the next
- 40:1515 minutes talking about the sources that Paul had and how
- 40:18that relates to this efficiency and the inerrancy of scripture.
- 40:21But we're not going to go there because that's not Paul's main
- 40:23point. Nor is it the holy spirit's?
- 40:24That's a conversation for another time.
- 40:27The main idea here is that Paul by the spirit points to these
- 40:30two men, we have their names but we know what they did in Exodus
- 40:34for a specific reason. There are many people in the Old
- 40:36Testament that have opposed truth, that have stood against
- 40:39men of God, the message of God but why?
- 40:42These two specifically? Why these two men, why that
- 40:47specific scenario? And I present to you three
- 40:50potential reasons. Number one, the ambition of
- 40:55these magicians is the same as false teachers and false
- 40:58Believers today. What were they doing?
- 41:01When Moses came and said, let my people go and God had given him
- 41:05a host of Miracles to perform what were these magicians doing?
- 41:10They were trying to perform the same Miracles with the goal of
- 41:14making sure that God's people would not be set free.
- 41:18They were trying to restrict and there are trying to cut off any
- 41:21potential of pharaoh or anybody else being persuaded that, these
- 41:25people deserve salvation and false.
- 41:27Teachers do the same day bar people from the truth.
- 41:31They don't want people to experience.
- 41:33What only Christ can provide and whether they are aware of it or
- 41:37not, whether they are intentionally doing.
- 41:38So does not justify their falsehood.
- 41:43Satan has all these false teachers with different masks
- 41:48for the same purpose, to make sure that people do not know the
- 41:52Deliverance of the Passover Lamb.
- 41:56So they have the same ambition. And what's important here is
- 42:00that it's not just a bar people from accepting the gospel.
- 42:03But it's also to ensnare people. Again, who have might have
- 42:06believed the gospel to bring you back to your former sins, to
- 42:10bring you back into the days of Egypt, where you are governed by
- 42:13pharaoh and not by the god of Israel.
- 42:16So these magicians, desire to see you enslaved, desire to see
- 42:22those two never be set free and those who have been set free to
- 42:25do, just what those people were tempted to do in the wilderness.
- 42:28Let's go back to Egypt. Some would even say that these
- 42:34magicians followed Israel Into the Wilderness that's tradition.
- 42:39And there are the voices that were continually convincing,
- 42:42these people to go back to Egypt.
- 42:46It's called the mixed crowd and the Book of Numbers and that's
- 42:49not a far-fetched interpretation.
- 42:52The ambition of these magicians are the same of false teachers
- 42:54and Timothy's day. And today false people who come
- 42:57into the church even, secondly, The deception of these
- 43:02magicians. Has the same power as false
- 43:06teachers today. Now, the way you're going to see
- 43:09that is if you go to Exodus with me, so go with me to Exodus as
- 43:11we close in a moment here, I want you to see something, you
- 43:14know this, but I want you to see it for yourself.
- 43:16Let's begin in Exodus chapter 7. Exodus chapter 7 verse 10.
- 43:26This is after Let's begin in verse 10.
- 43:36So Moses and Aaron went to pharaoh and did just as the Lord
- 43:39commanded, Aaron cast down his staff before pharaoh and his
- 43:43servants, and it became a serpent.
- 43:47Then pharaohs summoned, the wise, men, and The Sorcerer's
- 43:49and they The Magician's of Egypt also did the Same by their
- 43:53secret Arts. Go to verse 22.
- 43:58This is after the Nile was turned into blood and all water
- 44:00sources were turned into blood. We're told an exodus 7 verse 22,
- 44:04but the magician's of Egypt did the Same by their secret Arts.
- 44:09So Pharaoh's heart remain hardened and he would not listen
- 44:12to them as the Lord had said go to chapter 8 verse 7, But the
- 44:19magician's did the Same by their secret arts and made frogs come
- 44:23up on the land of Egypt. So we see in the first few
- 44:28plagues. The first few Miracles,
- 44:30whatever, Moses did The Magicians matched it.
- 44:35Now, I want you to imagine what an onlooker would think, every
- 44:40time Moses did something The Magician's did the same, you
- 44:42know what could potentially, run through their mind, there's no
- 44:45difference between the god of Israel and the gods of Egypt.
- 44:49There's similar they can do the same things, equal power, equal
- 44:53messages, equal equal promises, maybe there's no difference
- 44:58here. And so, you see here that these
- 45:00men were deceiving people including Farrell primarily
- 45:03pharaoh, to see that the god of Israel is not as powerful as he
- 45:06says he is and listen false teachers do the same.
- 45:11To the undiscerning, they see the package, they see the
- 45:15performance, and they go, there's no difference here.
- 45:18There's no, there's no difference here.
- 45:19Very similar messages. Very similar ideas, very similar
- 45:26Concepts, maybe even the same God.
- 45:29And I want to tell you, that's not just for those who interpret
- 45:31religions all, as one different packages, leading to the same
- 45:35person you even have some Christians professing
- 45:38Christians. Who are not Discerning and all
- 45:43it takes is for somebody to come in and speak.
- 45:47Christian he's quote, a few verses and hold the Bible and
- 45:53maybe even have it highlighted and they show you.
- 45:55It's highlighted. That must be the real deal,
- 45:58really. Really.
- 46:03They have an appearance of godliness.
- 46:06Just like those magicians had an appearance of having the same
- 46:09power as the power of God. So demented, a persuade people
- 46:14with a form of power, a form of Salvation in falsehood and clear
- 46:18faucet. But even in Christendom with a
- 46:22false Christian message, by the way, can I let me just say this?
- 46:26Please please, do not think that false teachers have pulpits all
- 46:30the time. Did they creep into Pulpit?
- 46:34So they creep into households. They crept into households.
- 46:43Not all false people, where Shepherds clothing, they wear
- 46:46sheep's clothing. And so they can very well be in
- 46:51the pew. And today they don't just creep
- 46:55into household, by knock on your door, like this ancient time.
- 46:58They creep into your households through your television through
- 47:01YouTube. Lastly, not just the Ambitions
- 47:08of these magicians. Being the same as false teachers
- 47:10today, not just the deception, but also the fate and Paul ends
- 47:14this thought on an encouraging note in verse 9 back in.
- 47:17Second Timothy, he tells Timothy something that he would not be
- 47:20overly burdened by, as he brings us hopeful note concerning these
- 47:25people, we are told that after he mentions these names of their
- 47:30future and the future is clear of these men, but they will not
- 47:35get very Far for their Folly will be playing to all.
- 47:38As was that of those two men? Let me simplify what he's trying
- 47:43to say. These people that persuade the
- 47:46masses. These people that persuade even
- 47:48naive innocent burdened people within the church.
- 47:54They're not going to get away with it, they're not He says,
- 47:59their Folly will be plain to all that's what happens to those two
- 48:03magicians. What happened?
- 48:04Eventually? It came to the miracle of the
- 48:06Nats, right? Moses performs that miracle and
- 48:09they try and they couldn't. And they look at Fair, they go,
- 48:12that's the Finger of God, they've reached a limit.
- 48:17They could, they could not cross a certain line with their
- 48:20abilities and in the side of those who are Discerning, they
- 48:23said these guys are fake, they're not the real deal,
- 48:27they're not legit. And to a certain degree, God in
- 48:33this lifetime is willing and has been and can expose people.
- 48:39He can if he even think about these false movements throughout
- 48:43history, they haven't lasted, they just come and go.
- 48:47There are others who try to manipulate people from within
- 48:50and they seem Christian they seem Godly and God exposes them.
- 48:54Their Folly will be plain to all not.
- 48:58Everybody will get away. but even if Throughout a lifetime or
- 49:05throughout centuries. There are false things that are
- 49:07not. They're not going away.
- 49:09They're not being exposed. There is a day coming when God
- 49:13will expose them. Remember, this is in the
- 49:15context, here's full circle in this section of the last days.
- 49:21And in the last days, not only will Things become more ugly.
- 49:26But God will have the final say. Not only will deception be
- 49:30rampant, but truth will penetrate and bring all things
- 49:34to light. And you think about these men,
- 49:38not only did they perform these deceptive Miracles, not only
- 49:43were they exposed but in one of the Miracles were God in the 61
- 49:47precisely brings boils on the Egyptians these magicians.
- 49:51We were told were also exposed to the Boyles they were judged
- 49:54by God. And that's what's going to come.
- 49:57That's what Paul is saying. Timothy, although, you may have
- 50:00seen people captured, although you seen people being hindered
- 50:03from being saved, and maybe even seen people from within, who
- 50:08were close to coming, who had some kind of understanding
- 50:10Christian, but where were Swept Away?
- 50:12Know this, God will have the final word.
- 50:18And whether in this life or in the life to come, people will
- 50:20see the Folly of everything or everyone who's outside of Jesus
- 50:24Christ. And so I encourage you today to
- 50:28be encouraged to be encouraged that no matter what people are
- 50:32getting away with. Do you have to face God?
- 50:39One day? They will oh many things have
- 50:43been said, but I want to steer a direction out towards the Lord's
- 50:46table. and I wanted to just prepare ourselves to meet with
- 50:50the Lord and to reflect on our Redemption know this if you are
- 50:56in this place and I want to make a gospel call here if you are in
- 51:00this place, You're visiting, you may be a Christian, you may not
- 51:05be a Christian. But this is, this is a message
- 51:09for you. And what sense maybe you are
- 51:12burdened with sins and you're trying to find relief.
- 51:17And you've picked up books and you're listening to different
- 51:20teachers and spiritist and you came out here for just for
- 51:26curiosity sake. I want to let you know that no
- 51:30one can give you Freedom apart from Christ.
- 51:32No one you will fail. You'll be disappointed.
- 51:35You will be empty. You might be happy for for a
- 51:38brief season but you will realize that nothing has the
- 51:41power to fill that void. Nothing can roll the burdens off
- 51:46your shoulders, the burden of a conscience that is troubled by
- 51:50your actions, your words Only Christ can deliver you and he
- 51:56wants to deliver you today. Maybe you are LED Away by
- 52:00various passions and it has led you into dangerous places.
- 52:03No, this, no matter where your feet have taken, you no matter
- 52:07what your hands have performed, no matter what you have, even
- 52:09believe, no matter what you might even believe.
- 52:11Now, Christ is ready to forgive you.
- 52:14He is he wants to restore your redeem, you It may be.
- 52:20You are always learning. Maybe to you Christianity is a
- 52:25hindrance to intellect. I want to let you know something
- 52:30that this book has been through intense scrutiny.
- 52:34Men have tried to bury it, men of try to burn it.
- 52:36Men of try to dismiss it, but the word of the Lord endures
- 52:40forever, this word has transformed lives.
- 52:44This word has test the stood, the test of time, this word will
- 52:48be the very thing that will last forever with God.
- 52:54And your conscience Bears witness to you this afternoon.
- 52:58That you are a sinner that you have a judge to face.
- 53:03One day, God is instilled that in man and that's why men wants
- 53:08to dismiss God as much as possible.
- 53:10They don't want to have to face the reality that when they give
- 53:12their final breath, they will meet the king of the universe.
- 53:16But may I add something to that thought that, that same King
- 53:19that man will stand before. Came into this world.
- 53:23He died on a cross. He went into a tomb heroes from
- 53:27that grave. So that he can purchase your
- 53:29Redemption. so, if your burden today, That burning can be
- 53:36lifted off of you, but only one name can save you.
- 53:39And that's Jesus call upon his name.
- 53:43I've done my part and I'm here afterwards, with Pastor Daniel
- 53:46and other leaders in this place. Other Christians in this place,
- 53:48that might lead you to that truth.
- 53:53More importantly, leads to this a living Christ who's willing to
- 53:56intervene in your life right now.
- 53:59Call upon his name Believers. Would you examine yourselves in
- 54:02this moment? Are you walking right with the
- 54:05Lord? Do you testify to the unity of
- 54:08the body of Christ? Or is there disunity in your
- 54:10language? Is there disunity in your
- 54:11actions? Is there somebody that you're
- 54:13supposed to reconcile with today?
- 54:15Is there somebody that you're supposed to sit and say, sit
- 54:17down with the say, hey, we have to deal with this before we come
- 54:19to the Lord's table. Do that.
- 54:21Don't come, don't come judge you.
- 54:23Lest you be judged. That's what the text tells us.
- 54:27And for those who are not Christians in this place, we ask
- 54:29you kindly not to participate in this because this is an
- 54:32ordinance reserved for those who have believed on Jesus Christ.
- 54:35If you're in this place and you're not a Christian, we don't
- 54:37we don't judge you. In this sense, we look down on
- 54:40you with scorn. We just ask you kindly not to
- 54:42participate because the Lord strictly reserves is for his
- 54:45children. And so as we come you're going
- 54:48to take the elements, bring it with you.
- 54:50We just ask that you don't eat or drink yet because we're going
- 54:52to sing A Hymn. And I'm Pastor Daniels going to
- 54:54lead us in a few words to reflect and then we will eat and
- 54:57drink together. Let's pray.
- 55:06Louis, thank you for this word. Thank you, that even in a word
- 55:11of warning you can encourage us. And we pray o God that we would
- 55:16be encouraged to be strong, both men and women. we pray o God
- 55:21that you would protect this assembly from those who are
- 55:24false And that Lord we would be able to discern and dissect and
- 55:31determine through the word who's for you, and who is against you.
- 55:38Father in heaven. We ask that as we come to this
- 55:39table, the Lord's table, that it would have a sanctifying effect
- 55:43on this. People on all of us, Lord, and
- 55:46Lord. If it will do anything, May
- 55:49renew a joy in your salvation that as we hold this element of
- 55:53bread and is element of the cup that we would remember that.
- 55:57It's not about our good, it's not about our Behavior, it's not
- 56:00about our performance that is purchase anything, but it's what
- 56:03Christ has done. And Lord we might be going
- 56:07through many trials, troubles, we might be wanting certain
- 56:10things, but Lord made this may this time.
- 56:12Now, remind us that we have all that we need in Jesus.
- 56:15Please Lord, make that real in us, this afternoon in Jesus name
- 56:20we pray. Amen.
