- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. And so we are
- 0:02going to be in a new episode this full month.
- 0:05And so we are doing seasons and in May in a state
- 0:08in action. And so welcome to Fostering Faith.
- 0:11This month is all about putting what you believe
- 0:13into motion. Faith is never meant to sit still.
- 0:16It was meant to move, serve, love, and shine.
- 0:20This month we learn what it means to live out
- 0:22our calling in everyday life through serving,
- 0:25generosity, kindness, and being the hands and
- 0:27feet of Christ. And our anchor verse is James
- 0:302, 17. Faith by itself is not accomplished by
- 0:35action is dead. And so in this episode, serving
- 0:38like Jesus, there is a moment in the gospels
- 0:41that still takes my breath away every time I
- 0:44read it. It doesn't happen during a miracle.
- 0:47It doesn't happen during a sermon. It doesn't
- 0:48happen when Jesus is calming a storm or raising
- 0:51the dead or multiplying bread. It happens in
- 0:55the quiet, in the ordinary. In the moment that
- 0:58no one expected, Jesus knelt down, grabs a towel,
- 1:03a basin, and washes his disciples' feet. The
- 1:06king of kings, the lord of lords, the one who
- 1:09created the galaxies, the one who farmed oceans,
- 1:11the one who holds all authority, the one who
- 1:13commands the angels, the one who will return
- 1:17riding on clouds, that Jesus got on the floor
- 1:21and took the posture of a servant. If there was
- 1:26ever a moment that revealed the heart of God,
- 1:29this was it. Because Jesus wasn't just teaching
- 1:32what to do. He was teaching who to be. Serving
- 1:36isn't something Jesus did occasionally. Serving
- 1:39is who God Jesus was. And if we follow Him, serving
- 1:44becomes who we are. Serving isn't small. Serving
- 1:49is spiritual. In our culture, serving is often
- 1:53seen as optional, extra. Something that you do
- 1:56if you have time. Something leaders delegate.
- 1:59Something that people outgrow. But in the Kingdom?
- 2:03Serving is greatness. Serving is leadership.
- 2:07It's spiritual maturity. It's warfare. It's obedience.
- 2:11It's being... Jesus said it clearly. Whoever
- 2:13wants to be great among you must be a servant.
- 2:17In Matthew 20, 26. Not might be. Not could be.
- 2:23Not should be. must be. In other words, greatness
- 2:28in the kingdom has a towel in its hand. And why
- 2:33serving is so powerful spiritually? Serving is
- 2:38not a random act of kindness. It is a weapon.
- 2:41Serving destroys pride. Serving silences insecurity.
- 2:46It kills comparison. Serving develops humility.
- 2:51Serving strengthens your identity. Serving builds
- 2:54compassion. Serving shifts your focus from yourself
- 2:57to others. Serving expands your spiritual capacity,
- 3:00and serving aligns your heart with God's heart.
- 3:03And when you serve, you become more like Jesus.
- 3:08And that enemy hates serving because building
- 3:11unity, humility, and love are three things that
- 3:17hell cannot compete with. and as we walked out
- 3:20of the Christmas season and serving Christ and
- 3:22helping people with gift giving and the angel
- 3:26trees and just allowing and just being compassionate
- 3:29and seeing people for what they have and what
- 3:32they don't have and just looking at people like
- 3:35they are children of God and that just to have
- 3:38just the ability to help people and to serve
- 3:40people and often in my office my nurse is busy
- 3:45because we are a very busy practice and so I
- 3:47will room patients a lot to the waiting room
- 3:49get a patient, I'll do my own vitals, I will
- 3:50room them. And it is so funny because I'm a nurse
- 3:53just like she is. And we are the same people.
- 3:56We're just same. We're just same. And then my
- 3:59patients get so tickled. They're like, oh my
- 4:00gosh, you came and got me? Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:03I'm a nurse. I can take vitals. I can room patients.
- 4:06I can put you on a bedpan. I can, you know, like
- 4:09to serve somebody. And that's, I'm a nurse. I'm
- 4:12a nurse at heart. I love to help people. I love
- 4:14to love on people. Just to be able to... is to
- 4:18serve people and make people feel better and
- 4:20just like to just allow them. We give haircuts
- 4:22and we shave people and we give baths and just
- 4:24to walk out of there, just walk in and you're
- 4:26filthy dirty. And God's timing is just wonderful
- 4:29because He'll put that patient in the middle
- 4:31of a day and then I will have a patient show
- 4:33up or He'll put them at the end of the day or
- 4:35near a lunch or whatever. So we have extra time
- 4:37to love on them because He sees what they need.
- 4:40And they need a bath, they need to shave, they
- 4:41need their hair washed, they need their feet
- 4:43washed. And so it's just, it's so great to make
- 4:47someone feel seen, loved, heard, and just to
- 4:51walk out of an office just making you smell good,
- 4:53you feel good, and you look better. And so it's
- 4:55just, it's just, I just love it. I just love
- 4:57it. So in that same instance, just to serve people
- 5:00and meet them where they're at. And it's just,
- 5:03I just love it. Okay. So the most powerful servant
- 5:06in scripture were not strong, but they were available.
- 5:10And so God never said, Find the most qualified.
- 5:15Find the most impressive. Find the most influential.
- 5:18Find the most perfect. He didn't say that. God
- 5:21looked for willing hearts. He looked for the
- 5:23people that was willing to do the work. And so
- 5:26David was a shepherd. Moses was insecure. Ruth
- 5:30was grieving. Esther was afraid. Mary was young.
- 5:34And the disciples were ordinary. David had a
- 5:38past. But they were not chosen because they were
- 5:41strong. They were chosen because they were surrendered.
- 5:47And Paul was surrendered as he was going to kill
- 5:49Christians. Yeah, whenever you have your eyesight
- 5:52taken away from you, you turn to surrender. Servanthood
- 5:55begins with one sentence. Lord, here I am. Use
- 6:00me. And let's pause right there. Are you guys
- 6:03willing to pray that? And to say, God, I'm here.
- 6:08Use me as you need me. Here I am. And that is
- 6:12a bold prayer. And so serving breaks the power
- 6:15of self -focus. And so we live in a culture obsessed
- 6:18with fighting yourself and being true to yourself
- 6:20and putting yourself first, protecting your energy
- 6:23and doing what benefits you. But Jesus teaches
- 6:26the opposite. If anyone wants to come after me,
- 6:29he must deny himself in Luke 9 .23. Not deny
- 6:33your personality, not deny your purpose, not
- 6:36deny your value, deny your self -centeredness.
- 6:39deny your comfort obsession, deny the need to
- 6:42be served. Serving isn't just about being less.
- 6:47It's about becoming more like Jesus. Jesus served
- 6:50people who didn't deserve it. And this is the
- 6:53part that hits deep. Jesus washed Judas' feet.
- 6:58He served the one who was going to betray him.
- 7:00He served the one whose heart was wrong. He served
- 7:03the one who didn't appreciate it. He served someone
- 7:07who wouldn't change because of it. Because serving
- 7:13isn't about them. Serving is about you being
- 7:17shaped into Christ -likeness. And you will serve
- 7:22people that don't thank you, that misunderstand
- 7:25you. You will serve people that don't reciprocate
- 7:29it. And you will serve people who don't see it
- 7:33as a sacrifice. And you'll serve people who don't
- 7:37clap for you. And guess what? That's okay. Jesus
- 7:42sees it. Jesus rewards that. And Jesus honors
- 7:46that. Heaven keeps records of all the things
- 7:51done here on earth and that the earth overlooks.
- 7:57Jesus sees your heart. He sees what you do behind
- 8:00closed doors. He sees what you do and don't post
- 8:02on social media. He sees what the right hand
- 8:05does and the left hand doesn't know about. He
- 8:07sees what you are doing and hiding, and potentially
- 8:10you're hiding it from your husband. If my husband
- 8:12knew how we serve other people, he may, and he
- 8:19has a very generous heart, but my husband doesn't
- 8:21know everything that I do to serve others. Why?
- 8:24I don't think that he would care or mind. But
- 8:29I also... He doesn't need to know. God knows
- 8:33what I do, and He sees my heart. He's the one
- 8:35that prompts it. And I'm pretty sure I probably
- 8:38don't know what He does either, or what my daughter
- 8:40does. It's just because you don't have to post
- 8:43it on social media. You don't have to put it
- 8:45on Instagram. That's between you and God. And
- 8:48so serving is not about availability. It's about
- 8:50priority. We don't serve because we have time.
- 8:53We serve because Jesus is Lord. Serving isn't
- 8:57a leftover. Serving is a calling. And listen,
- 9:01your serving will look different than everyone
- 9:04else's. Some people are serving by leading, by
- 9:07praying, by teaching, by comforting, by giving,
- 9:10by encouraging, noticing needs, helping quietly
- 9:13through hospitality, by showing up, by mentoring.
- 9:18There is no small service in the kingdom. In
- 9:22the moment that you make God's house a priority,
- 9:24God starts prioritizing your house. And so the
- 9:28heart of the servant, I think that there's three
- 9:30Christ -like postures. One, serve with humility.
- 9:36Philippians 2 .3 says, Humility isn't thinking
- 9:44less of yourself. It's thinking of yourself less
- 9:48often. And humility says, I don't need credit.
- 9:52I don't need an applause. Jesus sees me, and
- 9:56that's enough. So take your heart. Would you
- 10:00do all the kind things if you didn't post it
- 10:03on social media? If you didn't credit for it,
- 10:05if you didn't get credit for one more good deed,
- 10:09would you still do it? Two. Serve with joy. Serving
- 10:14without complaining. Serve without roll your
- 10:19eyes. Serve without resentment. Joy -filled worship.
- 10:28Joy says it's an honor to serve God's people.
- 10:32So do you begrudgingly go to church and pass
- 10:34the bucket? Do you grumble and complain that
- 10:37you have to teach kids ministry? Or do you find
- 10:40it an absolute honor that God has allowed you
- 10:44this position and that you get to go serve and
- 10:48pass the buckets? You get to go stand in the
- 10:51cold weather and just greet people and be so
- 10:53high energy whenever they're coming into your
- 10:55church parking lot? that you are just so overwhelmed,
- 10:58that they picked your church. This is the day
- 11:01that they can meet Jesus and be so excited. There's
- 11:06nothing too small for God to notice. Three, serve
- 11:10with consistency. Anyone can serve once. Anyone
- 11:15can serve when they feel like they can. Anyone
- 11:19can serve when it's convenient. But Christ -like
- 11:22servants serve consistently. Consistency is kingdom
- 11:27maturity. Consistency is spiritual strength.
- 11:31And consistency is what discipleship actually
- 11:35looks like. And so what serving looks like in
- 11:38the real life. And it doesn't have to be anything
- 11:43spectacular. Serving like Jesus looks like showing
- 11:46up early, staying a little later, being willing
- 11:51to do the unseen tasks. like putting toilet paper
- 11:54in the bathroom, scrubbing a toilet, making sure
- 11:57the lights are turned off, noticing that people
- 12:00that are sitting alone, praying for someone quietly,
- 12:05or actually praying when you say that you're
- 12:07going to, giving in, giving whenever no one knows,
- 12:14picking up the trash on the church floor, helping
- 12:16a new family find a classroom, encouraging a
- 12:20teen who feels awkward, a text to someone that
- 12:25God put on your heart. Be obedient. Be obedient.
- 12:28That can literally change someone's life. And
- 12:29so God has put something on your heart, put a
- 12:32name, and you don't reach out. Please do, please
- 12:34do. Making space for people. Doing things that
- 12:37aren't your job and that, I think, is one of
- 12:40my pet peeves. That's not my job. Oh, that eats
- 12:43at my brain. Stepping up when there's a need.
- 12:48Serving is not a role. It's a heartbeat. The
- 12:52enemy cannot stop a servant's heart, and do you
- 12:54know why? Because a servant's heart is surrendered,
- 12:57and hell cannot compete with a surrendered people.
- 13:01Surrender is the greatest spiritual strength.
- 13:03Servanthood is the greatest spiritual weapon.
- 13:05And whenever you serve, pride dies, unity grows,
- 13:10and strength in church strengthens. Your character
- 13:14matures, your calling sharpens, and your faith
- 13:17deepens, and your joy increases. and your compassion
- 13:21expands. Serving grows part of you and nothing
- 13:25else can grow. And so in this week's workbook,
- 13:29and so if you don't know, we have Fostering Faith
- 13:31Media and we have a website and we have all these
- 13:35workbooks for every month, every week. I've already
- 13:37lined out. They're printable. They are black
- 13:39and white. They're super clean and crisp because
- 13:42I hate wasting ink. And so it is something that's...
- 13:45We worked on, and so we guys can have a workbook
- 13:48to get these action snaps done. And so in your
- 13:51workbook this week, where is God calling me to
- 13:53serve right now? Is it in kids ministry? Is it
- 13:56in use? Greeting? A prayer team? Your workspace?
- 14:01Your home? Your community? A person God keeps
- 14:05highlighting in your eye? What is it? Why does
- 14:07He keep putting this person on their heart? Someone
- 14:10hurting? Ask, Holy Spirit, will you reveal it
- 14:14quickly? And then write one specific way that
- 14:19you will serve someone this week. And actually
- 14:22do it. Please. If you say you're going to do
- 14:26something, you do it. Bottom line. And that way,
- 14:29you get out of the habit of signing up for stuff
- 14:32that you don't want to do. And so, not beg, not
- 14:37be nicer, not help more, be specific. Bring someone
- 14:41a meal. Volunteer on Sunday. Text someone encouragement.
- 14:45Pay for someone quietly. Pray for someone intentionally.
- 14:51Offer help before asked. One act of service can
- 14:54open your heart to God. And so as we go into
- 14:59this prayer, we hope this message encouraged
- 15:01you. We hope this message inspired you. And maybe
- 15:04this acts of service will really open the door
- 15:06for you to be a blessing to somebody else. And
- 15:09leave a comment, write a review, help our podcast
- 15:12grow because we're believing big. for this podcast
- 15:15in this year. And so we would love to pray for
- 15:17you. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much
- 15:19for a servant heart. Thank you so much that our
- 15:22hearts are humble. Thank you that you're opening
- 15:23our eyes to see the needs. Thank you that you
- 15:25are shaping us into the people who love deeply
- 15:28and serve willingly. Thank you that our life
- 15:30reflect your hands and feet in every place that
- 15:32you send us. Thank you that we use your name
- 15:35for glory. We pray all this in Jesus' name. Amen
- 15:39and amen. We hope that you guys love this episode.
- 15:42We hope that you guys return for next week as
- 15:44we are gonna be in week two of generosity and
- 15:47radical kindness. We have a great week. We love
- 15:49you guys. Bye.
