- 2:27Speaker 1: of things. Sam Adams will be the Texas A &

- 2:49Speaker 1: A couple of administrators, Rick Baker, longtime CEO Bruce Gadd,
- 2:55Speaker 1: longtime president and volunteer and former Richardson High School quarterback,
- 3:00Speaker 1: Mack Brown. Lance McElhaney, the Honey Badger Tyron Matthew, and
- 3:06Speaker 1: Aaron Taylor of Notre Dame will be part of the
- 3:10Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl class inducted this spring. Okay, I promised you
- 3:17Speaker 1: I'm going to deliver. Bucky Ball is just around the corner.
- 3:22Speaker 6: I think we're talking to Jalen Shelley here in a
- 3:26Speaker 6: few minutes. Just, you know, what really drew you guys
- 3:29Speaker 6: to him out of the portal and just... How has
- 3:31Speaker 6: he maybe lived up to what y'all envisioned him just
- 3:35Speaker 6: through this summer as y'all get ready for the season?
- 3:39Speaker 7: 6'9, went long, highly skilled. We had to get bigger
- 3:42Speaker 7: and longer, but we still don't want to sacrifice our
- 3:45Speaker 7: skill because skill at the end of the day is
- 3:47Speaker 7: going to win. Our team last year had a pretty
- 3:50Speaker 7: good season, and we were very undersized, but we had skill.
- 3:53Speaker 7: So whenever you can find length with skill, you've got
- 3:55Speaker 7: to grab that up. He can play a point guard.
- 3:59Speaker 7: He can play a forward. in what we do, which
- 4:01Speaker 7: is four guys on the perimeter. Really has developed a shooting,
- 4:06Speaker 7: really sees the game well, and a really good defender.
- 4:09Speaker 7: He's dealing with a little small injury right now, but
- 4:14Speaker 7: he's been pretty dang good. I expect him to have
- 4:16Speaker 7: a good season.
- 4:17Speaker 8: How challenging is it to find a guy, kind of
- 4:19Speaker 8: to what you were saying, who's that tall but can
- 4:21Speaker 8: play the style of defense that y'all.
- 4:23Speaker 9: Want to play?
- 4:23Speaker 7: Yeah. It's tough. That's why you see a lot of
- 4:29Speaker 7: European players coming over. Because, like, when you have taller
- 4:32Speaker 7: players in Europe, they don't just put them on the
- 4:33Speaker 7: block at an early age. A lot of times here
- 4:36Speaker 7: you have a tall player, they put them on the block.
- 4:37Speaker 7: So that's why you don't see the skill with long
- 4:40Speaker 7: players as much. But, you know, he's somebody that I'd
- 4:43Speaker 7: heard about throughout the season. We're just watching players. And
- 4:48Speaker 7: I knew my coach, assistant coach, Bill Armstrong, coached me
- 4:52Speaker 7: in college. He's head coach at McNeese. Coached him in
- 4:55Speaker 7: high school at Link, you know.
- 4:57Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 4:58Speaker 7: When he went in, I asked him a lot about him,
- 4:59Speaker 7: and he had a lot of good things to say
- 5:01Speaker 7: about his potential. And so not many out there we
- 5:04Speaker 7: had to get him. Texas kid, you know, right here
- 5:07Speaker 7: from Dallas. You mentioned how you.
- 5:09Speaker 6: Could play one through four just in an ideal setting.
- 5:12Speaker 6: What maybe position would you all envision him being in, like, if.
- 5:16Speaker 7: You had it your way? Our one through four is
- 5:19Speaker 7: kind of interchangeable, but three position, pretty good. Like, he'll
- 5:23Speaker 7: probably guard the other team's three, their biggest guard. So
- 5:26Speaker 7: it probably will fit the most.
- 5:28Speaker 10: How do you feel like his defensive rebounding has translated
- 5:31Speaker 10: to the SEC? Obviously he was a great defensive rebounder
- 5:34Speaker 10: in the WCC, but is that something you all needed
- 5:37Speaker 10: here this year?
- 5:38Speaker 7: Yeah, I think he'll be good, and I think we'll
- 5:40Speaker 7: be bigger at the four. So that's going to help
- 5:43Speaker 7: him rebound because he'll be guarding those teams three more
- 5:46Speaker 7: than the four. Like when you had Reuben at the
- 5:49Speaker 7: four last year, which is hilarious that that's what we had,
- 5:51Speaker 7: you know, and just size-wise, like I can't expect Reuben
- 5:55Speaker 7: to get many rebounds. I just can expect him to
- 5:57Speaker 7: try to do everything he can to stop his man
- 5:59Speaker 7: from getting rebounds. But, like, when you've got a Mack
- 6:02Speaker 7: and a Zach playing the four or a Cade, well,
- 6:04Speaker 7: now it frees up those threes to come down there
- 6:06Speaker 7: and get the ball.
- 6:07Speaker 8: A couple weeks in now, what's your assessment of how
- 6:11Speaker 8: the team's looked and just how you guys are coming together?
- 6:14Speaker 7: You know, they're getting better. Our defense has got to
- 6:17Speaker 7: get better in the half court particularly. They've got a
- 6:22Speaker 7: good vibe for understanding people's player strengths and weaknesses. You know,
- 6:27Speaker 7: if we have the whole roster together and all the players,
- 6:29Speaker 7: I think we can space the floor really well. And
- 6:32Speaker 7: I think the returners from last year improved a lot.
- 6:34Speaker 7: So freshmen probably a little ahead of where I thought
- 6:37Speaker 7: they'd be at this time. So I like our group, but,
- 6:40Speaker 7: you know, we'll see when the bullets start flying.
- 6:41Speaker 11: Does the start of practice this year, does it feel
- 6:44Speaker 11: different than last year as far as, you know, how
- 6:47Speaker 11: far along you guys are?
- 6:49Speaker 7: Or is it just because there are so many new guys,
- 6:50Speaker 7: like a starting over? Yeah, I think we're way further ahead.
- 6:54Speaker 7: The foreign tour helped, obviously. You know, Ryland couldn't go
- 7:00Speaker 7: on the deal this summer, and neither was Pope. But
- 7:03Speaker 7: Ryland's played here. Pope's been in the SEC. But everybody
- 7:06Speaker 7: else has played some type of game together down there
- 7:09Speaker 7: in the Bahamas. I think they know what I value,
- 7:12Speaker 7: and so I don't think it will be like a
- 7:13Speaker 7: three- or four-game deal to understand, like, hey, I've got
- 7:17Speaker 7: to do this, and I'm going to play.
- 7:18Speaker 11: Have you had to change sort of how you think
- 7:23Speaker 11: about using personnel– before the bryson you know when you
- 7:28Speaker 11: had bryson warren here now now not having him here
- 7:31Speaker 11: how much has.
- 7:31Speaker 7: That philosophy had to change yeah i mean you got
- 7:34Speaker 7: to change throughout like even in the season with injury
- 7:36Speaker 7: like you know mckenzie went down last year so you
- 7:40Speaker 7: know we had to change all right we're going to
- 7:42Speaker 7: play four guards and really just totally space it and
- 7:45Speaker 7: live with shooting a lot of threes we can switch
- 7:47Speaker 7: everything one through four because their size is the same
- 7:50Speaker 7: right so like that's just coaching, everyone's going to do that.
- 7:54Speaker 7: You lose players, you've got to change where your strengths
- 7:56Speaker 7: and weaknesses are. Adding Pope and potentially Ryland, those players
- 8:04Speaker 7: right there give you different dimensions, can space the floor.
- 8:10Speaker 6: You had told us after the season ended up in
- 8:13Speaker 6: Oklahoma City, positional length was going to be the priority
- 8:16Speaker 6: in the transfer portal. Now that you've had the summer
- 8:19Speaker 6: and you're in these preseason practices, like What's maybe the
- 8:22Speaker 6: biggest way that getting some of those guys has helped y'all?
- 8:26Speaker 7: Finishing around the rim. Like we were not good around
- 8:28Speaker 7: the rim at all last year, particularly with our guards.
- 8:33Speaker 7: We can finish and attack the basket. Like our guys
- 8:35Speaker 7: can get to the paint. Last year, I mentioned this
- 8:38Speaker 7: when I was in here last time, it's just like
- 8:40Speaker 7: to score last year, it felt like we had to
- 8:41Speaker 7: like drive, kick eight times to three more one mores
- 8:46Speaker 7: with somebody like perfectly ready to catch it and shoot it.
- 8:49Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying?
- 8:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 7: Which was how they had to play, and they bought
- 8:51Speaker 7: into that. But, like, you know, we didn't have enough
- 8:54Speaker 7: guys that go racket. Like, we have some guys that
- 8:56Speaker 7: can get to the line and racket. And then defensively
- 8:59Speaker 7: around the basket, like, things are more of a challenge. Like,
- 9:02Speaker 7: you don't have to pitch a perfect game.
- 9:04Speaker 8: What have you seen from Zach? And has he kind
- 9:06Speaker 8: of stepped into, like, a leadership role? How comfortable is he, you.
- 9:10Speaker 7: Know, in year two? Yeah, his leadership's been awesome. Like,
- 9:13Speaker 7: Zach's a tough kid. He's a team player. He's really
- 9:17Speaker 7: shooting the ball well. You know, he wants to win.
- 9:20Speaker 7: He's seen winning, right? But I think he needed just confidence,
- 9:24Speaker 7: and I think last year helped him a lot because
- 9:26Speaker 7: he went several years not getting that many minutes. So
- 9:29Speaker 7: he's been the SEC. I think he'll have a really
- 9:31Speaker 7: good year for us.
- 9:32Speaker 5: How important is it to have returners like Zach who
- 9:34Speaker 5: have played in the system before?
- 9:36Speaker 7: It matters a lot. I think that the effort that
- 9:42Speaker 7: we have to play with to make what we do work,
- 9:45Speaker 7: if you don't have players who are constantly in the
- 9:47Speaker 7: locker room demanding it the same way that I do,
- 9:50Speaker 7: then it's really hard. We're going to get there always,
- 9:53Speaker 7: but it's like how quick can we get there, right?
- 9:56Speaker 7: So I think when you've got returners like that that
- 9:58Speaker 7: are echoing the voice that you need, then you're just
- 10:00Speaker 7: going to get to where you're trying to get to faster.
- 10:02Speaker 7: And that's one of our goals. We don't want to
- 10:04Speaker 7: start the season like three weeks before we're in game
- 10:07Speaker 7: shape or three weeks before we know how hard you've
- 10:09Speaker 7: got to play, take two losses, trick a game off
- 10:12Speaker 7: the last ten minutes that we shouldn't have, come out
- 10:14Speaker 7: on a road game and not know what planet we're
- 10:16Speaker 7: on like when we played Oklahoma State last year. We
- 10:19Speaker 7: want to try to get that stuff out the way
- 10:22Speaker 7: in these scrimmages. And with returners, I think they can
- 10:26Speaker 7: vouch for it when they've gone through it and seen
- 10:28Speaker 7: the ebbs and flows of what it's like when you
- 10:30Speaker 7: don't do it the right way.
- 10:32Speaker 10: Sometimes you can have returners that you just bring back
- 10:36Speaker 10: because they know the system, but you obviously had the
- 10:39Speaker 10: chance to bring back some of your guards from last
- 10:41Speaker 10: year and chose not to because.
- 10:43Speaker 4: You felt you could upgrade in the portal.
- 10:45Speaker 10: Why did you not get complacent with bringing back just
- 10:49Speaker 10: because they knew the system?
- 10:50Speaker 7: Well, in this day and age, it's a lot of
- 10:54Speaker 7: business decisions going to it, right? And so it's like,
- 10:58Speaker 7: you know, it's not more than just who you like,
- 11:01Speaker 7: who you don't like. It's kind of what certain price
- 11:05Speaker 7: points are, and it's got to make sense to what
- 11:07Speaker 7: you're trying to do to construct an overall roster. You
- 11:10Speaker 7: know what I mean? And I think that, like, every
- 11:17Speaker 7: year you're trying to get better. We know that. Like
- 11:19Speaker 7: every team out there has to get better. And, you know,
- 11:24Speaker 7: you can't, let me say it like this, when it
- 11:29Speaker 7: comes down to business side of things that I don't
- 11:32Speaker 7: get super involved in, you can't be loose. And someone
- 11:39Speaker 7: gave this example where, let's say that everybody in here
- 11:43Speaker 7: was going to make $ 10, but everybody wants $ 11. Okay,
- 11:47Speaker 7: and I do that with 10 people. and we're going
- 11:49Speaker 7: to get 11 players. Now all of a sudden we
- 11:52Speaker 7: don't have enough money for the 11th player. I just
- 11:54Speaker 7: want this much more. At some point when it comes
- 11:58Speaker 7: down to the business side of things, you've got to
- 12:00Speaker 7: be responsible to build the roster the right way. Whatever
- 12:05Speaker 7: that means is what you've got to do. When you
- 12:09Speaker 7: evaluate it, it's got to make sense for everybody.
- 12:13Speaker 6: How would you describe Jalen Shelley's personality and the guy.
- 12:16Speaker 4: He is on your team?
- 12:18Speaker 7: He's like a really smart kid, like very smart, high
- 12:21Speaker 7: basketball IQ. Dad was a professional athlete. He, so he's
- 12:26Speaker 7: been around it. You know, he's seen high major and
- 12:31Speaker 7: then he's seen mid-major, now back to high major. He's
- 12:35Speaker 7: easy to talk to, wants to be coached, gets down
- 12:37Speaker 7: on himself more than anybody. So those are the kind
- 12:40Speaker 7: of players that you want because like, you know, it
- 12:41Speaker 7: means something to him to do right. I think that
- 12:44Speaker 7: really like he's got a very, very bright future. Like,
- 12:48Speaker 7: He can play at the highest level if he works
- 12:50Speaker 7: and has a pro mindset. Dribble, pass, shoot. Enjoy to
- 12:57Speaker 7: be around. Other players gravitate towards him. They all hang
- 13:00Speaker 7: out together. He's a good dude. I think y'all love
- 13:07Speaker 7: watching him play. Y'all can interview him, right, today? Y'all
- 13:10Speaker 7: like talking to him.
- 13:12Speaker 4: How has the cohesion of this team been?
- 13:14Speaker 11: Obviously, a lot of new faces and Learning each other,
- 13:17Speaker 11: how has it been kind of seeing them come.
- 13:18Speaker 9: Together this offseason?
- 13:20Speaker 7: Yeah, it's been good. I think I mentioned this last time,
- 13:23Speaker 7: but they're more like our team last year was a
- 13:27Speaker 7: bunch of older players. They were kind of a pro mindset.
- 13:30Speaker 7: They liked each other, but they just kind of showed
- 13:32Speaker 7: up to do business. You know what I mean? And
- 13:34Speaker 7: they fought a total team on the floor. You can
- 13:38Speaker 7: have it both ways. I mean, you watch the pros.
- 13:40Speaker 7: I'm pretty sure when I watched the Golden State Warriors
- 13:42Speaker 7: with Steph and all those guys when they were rolling,
- 13:45Speaker 7: They were pros. They were a dang team out there.
- 13:46Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying? You can say the same
- 13:48Speaker 7: deal with whoever team you like in any sport. And
- 13:51Speaker 7: that's one way of doing it. This group's like the
- 13:53Speaker 7: kind of group that they all like to hang together.
- 13:55Speaker 7: You know what I mean? Like they're that kind of team.
- 13:58Speaker 7: Like if you go bowling, they're all going to be bowling.
- 14:02Speaker 7: Like they're not too cool for school. Like it's, you know,
- 14:04Speaker 7: so they're kind of a younger mindset with that, you know. But,
- 14:10Speaker 7: you know, I've coached high school, so I've seen it
- 14:11Speaker 7: both ways. So they're a fun group.
- 14:15Speaker 6: Two Jalen's on your team. You come up with a
- 14:16Speaker 6: couple of nicknames to distinguish the two guys?
- 14:19Speaker 7: I just call them by their last name. You know,
- 14:21Speaker 7: now some things I call them I can't say in here,
- 14:23Speaker 7: just depending if they're getting back and blocking shots and
- 14:25Speaker 7: playing defense.
- 14:26Speaker 1: All right, that's Bucky, the owner-operator of Bucky Ball. Game
- 14:34Speaker 1: this month at SMU on October 25th, Sunday afternoon, 1 o'clock.
- 14:42Speaker 1: That's an exhibition game. But I'm planning on being there.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Not kidding. All right. Clark Eisenhower, Outdoor Edition. Let's go
- 14:54Speaker 1: to one of my favorite places, the Everglades, with Captain
- 15:00Speaker 1: Peter Lopez.
- 15:03Speaker 12: We are at Flamingo in the Everglades in Florida with
- 15:09Speaker 12: Captain Peter Lopez here on the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition show.
- 15:13Speaker 12: After a morning and a half in the Everglades, first
- 15:17Speaker 12: of all, it was hot.
- 15:20Speaker 13: It was scorching out there and not a lick of wind,
- 15:22Speaker 13: which doesn't help.
- 15:23Speaker 12: And that hardly ever happens with me. It's usually blowing 40.
- 15:29Speaker 12: You know, we talked about that, right? It's never blowing
- 15:32Speaker 12: just right. It's either too much or too little.
- 15:35Speaker 13: Yep, it's never just right, that's for sure.
- 15:37Speaker 14: Well, it is if you're on the water as long
- 15:39Speaker 14: as you are. You fight just right days.
- 15:40Speaker 13: Yeah, you get those windows where it's just right, but...
- 15:43Speaker 13: It's been slick here the past couple weeks, and it's
- 15:46Speaker 13: been really hot.
- 15:48Speaker 12: Hot with thundershowers, but we dodged all those today. It
- 15:52Speaker 12: was just a great day in the Everglades. You were
- 15:54Speaker 12: just visiting that. If it was up to you, you
- 15:57Speaker 12: would probably fish here every day.
- 16:00Speaker 13: Oh, yeah. I could spend every day of the rest
- 16:02Speaker 13: of my life here and still never be tired of it.
- 16:05Speaker 13: Every time I go anywhere else to fish, all I
- 16:07Speaker 13: could think about is being here.
- 16:08Speaker 14: What's magical to you about it?
- 16:11Speaker 13: Just the endless amount of water and every turn you make,
- 16:14Speaker 13: something different could be going on around that next corner
- 16:17Speaker 13: and just exploring and getting lost and that's what makes
- 16:20Speaker 13: it special to me.
- 16:22Speaker 14: For me, it's just the amount of life.
- 16:25Speaker 12: You know, we just saw manatees coming in, all kinds
- 16:29Speaker 12: of species of sharks. We caught snook, trout, redfish. Saw ray,
- 16:35Speaker 12: saw turtle, and bird life is just off the charts here.
- 16:39Speaker 13: Oh, yeah, it's incredible the amount of life that's here.
- 16:43Speaker 13: I think that's really what makes it really special, definitely.
- 16:46Speaker 12: And we saw, when we were back there, we saw
- 16:49Speaker 12: two boats, I think, most.
- 16:51Speaker 14: Of the morning.
- 16:52Speaker 13: Oh, yeah, it's only a couple boats out today, which
- 16:55Speaker 13: is surprising considering the weather.
- 16:56Speaker 14: It's a big area.
- 16:57Speaker 13: Yeah, it is a big area, so everybody kind of
- 16:59Speaker 13: spreads out. But with today's weather, you'd think there'd be
- 17:03Speaker 13: a lot more people out.
- 17:04Speaker 12: So you took us right into the middle of fish.
- 17:07Speaker 12: I mean, first thing, you had been there, I think, recently,
- 17:11Speaker 12: I guess. Mullet everywhere, snook everywhere, sharks everywhere. And, man,
- 17:20Speaker 12: they were spooky today.
- 17:23Speaker 13: Yeah, they were really, really finicky. I think it was
- 17:26Speaker 13: mainly because they were in clean water. And then on
- 17:28Speaker 13: top of that, it was slicked out. So they were
- 17:31Speaker 13: very aware of everything going on anywhere around them.
- 17:34Speaker 12: We needed just a little breeze, right, to cut part
- 17:38Speaker 12: of that because they were spooking at the movement of
- 17:43Speaker 12: my rod.
- 17:44Speaker 14: And I wasn't even on the platform, right?
- 17:46Speaker 8: No.
- 17:46Speaker 14: Whether it was shadows or the movement.
- 17:48Speaker 12: Of the rod or the lure hitting the water, they
- 17:52Speaker 12: were just spooky.
- 17:54Speaker 13: Oh, yeah. Some of those fish were spooking while the...
- 17:57Speaker 13: plastic was in the air before it even hit the water.
- 18:00Speaker 14: Yeah that's really unusual let's be honest about that.
- 18:03Speaker 13: Isn't it yeah it is crazy but i definitely think
- 18:05Speaker 13: it has a lot to do with just birds ospreys
- 18:08Speaker 13: trying to catch them and messing with them all the
- 18:10Speaker 13: time and so i feel like they're constantly.
- 18:12Speaker 14: Looking up yeah they're in survival.
- 18:15Speaker 13: Mode yeah they are they have to be they got
- 18:17Speaker 13: all those sharks and ospreys and bald eagles and everything
- 18:21Speaker 13: after them.
- 18:22Speaker 14: So everything is after them including fishermen.
- 18:25Speaker 13: Including us yeah.
- 18:27Speaker 12: And you told me there's a big tournament tomorrow so
- 18:30Speaker 12: there's going to be a lot of boats probably.
- 18:32Speaker 13: In that area oh yeah i think that zone will
- 18:35Speaker 13: this whole zone here will be pretty loaded up with
- 18:37Speaker 13: people i think there's probably 50 something boats fishing.
- 18:40Speaker 11: It so wow Yeah.
- 18:43Speaker 14: Good luck, by the way.
- 18:44Speaker 13: Thank you. I appreciate that. I'm going to need.
- 18:47Speaker 1: It.
- 18:48Speaker 14: Will you come to this area?
- 18:50Speaker 13: Yeah, I'm going to definitely be somewhere in this zone,
- 18:52Speaker 13: bouncing around maybe a little bit to try and get
- 18:55Speaker 13: all the species because this is the one place where
- 18:57Speaker 13: I have to come to get the redfish and the
- 19:00Speaker 13: snook and the trout and everything. Probably the black drum.
- 19:05Speaker 14: You did see a tarpon from the polling platform.
- 19:09Speaker 13: I did. I saw that one tarpon.
- 19:11Speaker 14: Nothing rolling this morning.
- 19:12Speaker 13: No rollers, and it was glassed out. It was a
- 19:14Speaker 13: perfect morning. I thought they would be.
- 19:16Speaker 12: They must have been somewhere else because in a morning
- 19:19Speaker 12: like this.
- 19:20Speaker 14: Early, and we were there pretty early.
- 19:21Speaker 13: Yeah, definitely. Once the sun pokes up, a lot of
- 19:24Speaker 13: times they lay down. Sure. But we did get out
- 19:27Speaker 13: there early enough to where the sun was low enough
- 19:29Speaker 13: to where they should have still been rolling and doing something.
- 19:32Speaker 14: So that's the other thing.
- 19:33Speaker 12: I don't know how many species you just mentioned, six
- 19:36Speaker 12: or seven, but they could all be caught.
- 19:38Speaker 14: In the area where we were today.
- 19:39Speaker 13: Yeah, pretty much all of them except for the bonefish.
- 19:42Speaker 14: Yeah, sure.
- 19:43Speaker 13: So, yeah, the bonefish will have to catch a little
- 19:47Speaker 13: in a different zone.
- 19:48Speaker 14: And you've been on bonefish.
- 19:50Speaker 13: Oh, yeah, the bonefishing has been really good.
- 19:52Speaker 12: You mentioned that, that they're everywhere along the Keys right now.
- 19:56Speaker 13: Oh, yeah, everywhere I've been and I've spoken to buddies
- 19:59Speaker 13: from Key West all the way to Biscayne Bay and
- 20:02Speaker 13: bonefish just about everywhere you go.
- 20:04Speaker 14: Why do you think that is?
- 20:06Speaker 13: Honestly, I've been thinking about it a lot lately, and
- 20:08Speaker 13: I just can't figure it out, honestly.
- 20:10Speaker 14: One of those years?
- 20:12Speaker 13: Just one of those years, I guess, where they're just
- 20:14Speaker 13: really happy for some reason.
- 20:16Speaker 12: I'd like to think that maybe some efforts that people
- 20:20Speaker 12: have taken around here is beginning to pay off, because
- 20:24Speaker 12: they pretty much disappeared for a while, didn't they?
- 20:27Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah, they did. They were scarce for a little
- 20:30Speaker 13: while there, but... Last couple of years, I feel like myself,
- 20:34Speaker 13: I personally think it's been getting better. A lot more
- 20:37Speaker 13: fish around.
- 20:37Speaker 14: Yeah, so you've seen it.
- 20:38Speaker 13: Yeah, I've been starting to see more and more fish. Obviously,
- 20:42Speaker 13: with the right conditions and everything, when the stars align,
- 20:46Speaker 13: there can be some really good bonefishing.
- 20:49Speaker 12: And one of the things that I've seen of this
- 20:53Speaker 12: area over the years is, generally speaking, Isla Morada area,
- 20:58Speaker 12: the size of those bonefish have traditionally been pretty good,
- 21:01Speaker 12: haven't they?
- 21:02Speaker 13: Yeah. Back in the day, recently, a lot of smaller fish.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Okay.
- 21:06Speaker 14: Well, you know, there's pluses and minuses for that. Oh, absolutely.
- 21:10Speaker 13: I'd rather have small fish than no fish.
- 21:12Speaker 14: Absolutely.
- 21:13Speaker 13: A lot of, like, fish from, like, one to four-pound range.
- 21:17Speaker 12: You had a really good day on the water with bonefish.
- 21:20Speaker 12: Was it yesterday you were telling me about? When did
- 21:22Speaker 12: you catch 13 bonefish?
- 21:23Speaker 13: This was, I think, three weeks ago.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 21:26Speaker 12: I mean, that's a day for people who don't understand that.
- 21:30Speaker 12: That's a career for some people.
- 21:31Speaker 13: Yeah, that was a very special day. Those are few
- 21:34Speaker 13: and far between.
- 21:35Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 21:36Speaker 13: But we had the right conditions, tons of fish around
- 21:38Speaker 13: the boat, and it just worked out.
- 21:42Speaker 14: Do you ever fish for permit?
- 21:44Speaker 1: I do.
- 21:45Speaker 14: Speaking of frustrating.
- 21:46Speaker 15: I do.
- 21:47Speaker 13: I do frustrate myself every now and then. Not recently.
- 21:52Speaker 13: I haven't been too much.
- 21:53Speaker 14: We're talking about on the fly.
- 21:55Speaker 13: Oh, on the fly, yeah. No, I haven't. Recently, I
- 21:58Speaker 13: have not been. I haven't been trying.
- 21:59Speaker 14: I mean, that's a whole other issue.
- 22:01Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 22:02Speaker 13: Usually, while you're bone fishing, you'll see permit.
- 22:04Speaker 9: Yes.
- 22:04Speaker 13: In between, but recently, I haven't been seeing a lot.
- 22:07Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:08Speaker 13: Just mainly bone fish, so I've been sticking with them.
- 22:11Speaker 13: They're a lot more cooperative.
- 22:13Speaker 14: How would you describe the health of the fishery overall,
- 22:17Speaker 14: the water? You're on the water every day. Where are
- 22:20Speaker 14: we right now?
- 22:22Speaker 16: Um.
- 22:24Speaker 13: I think there's definitely zones that are healthy, and then
- 22:27Speaker 13: there's zones that aren't due to lack of fresh water,
- 22:31Speaker 13: and they need that. So this year, compared to other years,
- 22:37Speaker 13: I haven't been seeing as many algae blooms, which is good.
- 22:39Speaker 14: That is good. Yeah, I haven't read a lot.
- 22:41Speaker 12: You know, usually every summer we're reading about that, and again,
- 22:46Speaker 12: maybe a few of the steps that have been taken
- 22:49Speaker 12: is beginning to pay off, and we're hopeful for that.
- 22:52Speaker 13: Yeah, I think so for sure. Um, but yeah, it's
- 22:56Speaker 13: definitely a plus that I haven't had to deal with
- 22:58Speaker 13: that because usually, you know, you'll lose tons of area
- 23:02Speaker 13: to fish because the water's pea green, you know, it's
- 23:05Speaker 13: nasty and nothing wants to be there. But thankfully this year,
- 23:10Speaker 13: I haven't really seen much of that going on.
- 23:13Speaker 12: You told me a python story and I, I was
- 23:15Speaker 12: ready to crawl back in the car and lock the door.
- 23:17Speaker 12: So you're, you're grabbing pythons. How long ago was that
- 23:21Speaker 12: here in the park?
- 23:22Speaker 13: Um that one that I told you about that one
- 23:25Speaker 13: was probably five.
- 23:27Speaker 12: Years ago now okay 17 feet oh that one yeah
- 23:31Speaker 12: that one yeah that one that bit you that one was.
- 23:33Speaker 13: Probably oh yeah yeah that big one was nine years
- 23:38Speaker 13: ago I'd say yeah eight eight nine years ago and
- 23:41Speaker 13: it bit you that one didn't The smaller one did,
- 23:45Speaker 13: the six-footer.
- 23:46Speaker 14: Oh, it was only six feet.
- 23:47Speaker 13: That big one would have, if that thing bit me,
- 23:50Speaker 13: it would have been bad.
- 23:50Speaker 14: You would have known about it.
- 23:51Speaker 13: His head was like probably nine inches long.
- 23:55Speaker 14: Why do you pick these things up? That's my biggest question.
- 23:58Speaker 13: Well, I just think about everything they're killing, you know,
- 24:03Speaker 13: being out here. They're killing everything in their path, all
- 24:05Speaker 13: the wading birds, anything that moves.
- 24:08Speaker 14: Yeah, that doesn't answer my question why you picked them.
- 24:11Speaker 13: So I feel like I need to definitely.
- 24:13Speaker 14: You're doing your part.
- 24:14Speaker 13: When I see one, I have to pick it up. Otherwise,
- 24:16Speaker 13: I feel guilty.
- 24:18Speaker 14: I mean, that's fair.
- 24:18Speaker 13: Just driving away from it. That's fair.
- 24:21Speaker 12: Again, you grew up in the area. Have you seen
- 24:24Speaker 12: a decrease in the number of wildlife here as you
- 24:28Speaker 12: drive down this road to get here?
- 24:30Speaker 14: Over the years, I mean.
- 24:32Speaker 13: Definitely. I mean, you don't see any rabbits or any rodents, really.
- 24:37Speaker 13: I mean, you see birds, but that's about it, really.
- 24:41Speaker 14: And I'm told they eat a lot of deer, too.
- 24:44Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 13: I've seen out of the hundreds of times I've driven
- 24:48Speaker 13: this road, I've probably seen five, six deer.
- 24:51Speaker 12: And this is a guy that drives this road a lot.
- 24:53Speaker 12: So that means there aren't many deer left around.
- 24:56Speaker 13: They also have a lot of area, too.
- 24:58Speaker 9: Sure.
- 24:59Speaker 14: I mean, that's fair.
- 25:00Speaker 13: I feel like there's definitely more than we think, but
- 25:02Speaker 13: I don't think there's as much as there used to
- 25:05Speaker 13: be due to... Probably pythons, water. A lot of reasons.
- 25:11Speaker 13: I don't think it's specifically the pythons, but I think
- 25:14Speaker 13: they definitely do take a toll on the wildlife.
- 25:19Speaker 12: You're fairly optimistic in terms of, I mean, you make
- 25:21Speaker 12: your living doing this, in terms of the amount of
- 25:25Speaker 12: fish that are still around to be caught?
- 25:27Speaker 13: Oh, yeah. Yeah, there's definitely a lot of fish, considering,
- 25:30Speaker 13: you know, everything this place has been put through.
- 25:32Speaker 14: A lot of fishermen.
- 25:33Speaker 13: Yeah, a lot of fishermen, a lot of pressure. And
- 25:37Speaker 13: water issues, but there's still really good fishing. There's a
- 25:41Speaker 13: lot of fish around. I always like to hear that.
- 25:45Speaker 12: So how can folks get in touch with you, Pete,
- 25:47Speaker 12: if they want to come down here? And again, this place,
- 25:51Speaker 12: I'm like him. I would fish here every time. I
- 25:55Speaker 12: love this place. We didn't catch a ton of fish today.
- 25:58Speaker 14: It didn't matter.
- 26:01Speaker 12: As he mentioned before, you can come out here and
- 26:03Speaker 12: not catch a fish today. And you'll have a tremendous
- 26:06Speaker 12: day just because you're on the water every day.
- 26:08Speaker 14: You never know what you're going to see from day
- 26:11Speaker 14: to day, do you?
- 26:12Speaker 13: No, you never know, honestly. Every day is different. So
- 26:15Speaker 13: that's what makes it special, you know.
- 26:17Speaker 14: So tell me how folks get in touch with you.
- 26:20Speaker 13: I don't have a website. I don't really have anything
- 26:23Speaker 13: I don't advertise. But usually everybody just gets, you know.
- 26:27Speaker 13: through text or phone call okay.
- 26:29Speaker 14: I think you're on twitter are you not on twitter.
- 26:31Speaker 13: I have an instagram page yeah i have i have
- 26:33Speaker 13: an instagram page um but that's about it yeah through
- 26:37Speaker 13: instagram or phone.
- 26:38Speaker 14: Call okay uh give your phone number.
- 26:43Speaker 13: Real quick uh 305-492-3031.
- 26:47Speaker 12: And we'll put that up i'll have that available but
- 26:49Speaker 12: but how long have you been doing this now I've been.
- 26:52Speaker 13: Guiding full-time now for probably nine years, I would say.
- 26:56Speaker 14: Good gosh.
- 26:57Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 26:58Speaker 14: I think we were with you the first year, I believe.
- 27:00Speaker 13: It's been a while, yeah, for sure.
- 27:02Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 27:03Speaker 13: But before that, fishing a ton on my own. Before
- 27:07Speaker 13: I was doing it for work, I never knew it
- 27:08Speaker 13: was possible to do this for work. But as soon
- 27:10Speaker 13: as I realized that it was possible, I was like, man,
- 27:13Speaker 13: that's what I'm going to do.
- 27:14Speaker 12: Well, but you do get to fish some, but as
- 27:19Speaker 12: we've talked many times... Guides don't– you're not fishing for
- 27:23Speaker 12: a living. You're helping other people fish for a living.
- 27:26Speaker 14: Oh, yeah.
- 27:26Speaker 13: Most of the time, you're work fishing.
- 27:28Speaker 14: You're doing this so you can fish every now and then.
- 27:31Speaker 13: Exactly, yeah. And between my days of work, I have
- 27:34Speaker 13: a day off. I'm probably out fishing. Yeah, I'm probably fishing.
- 27:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:38Speaker 12: I mean, that's a guy who loves what he does,
- 27:40Speaker 12: and it pays off. Thank you so much, man. It's
- 27:43Speaker 12: great to be back with you. We had a great
- 27:45Speaker 12: time today. I appreciate it.
- 27:46Speaker 13: Yeah, it's always a good time to have you and
- 27:48Speaker 13: hope to do it again soon.
- 27:49Speaker 12: Captain Peter Lopez here from Flamingo in the Everglades on
- 27:53Speaker 12: the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Captain Peter Lopez from the Everglades. And just a cool place.
- 28:06Speaker 1: You've never got a chance to go there. Can't recommend
- 28:10Speaker 1: it highly enough. Lucko Ranch and Farm Management is locally owned,
- 28:15Speaker 1: locally operated by Aggies here in town. And there's outreaches
- 28:20Speaker 1: all over the Southwest. They are building and stocking and
- 28:26Speaker 1: maintaining ponds and lakes for fishing, and they can do
- 28:33Speaker 1: the same thing for you. Whether you have an existing
- 28:36Speaker 1: pond or lake, maybe it's not doing so well, maybe
- 28:39Speaker 1: it needs some help. John Jones and his crew will
- 28:44Speaker 1: do that. That's what they do. Maybe it needs stocking.
- 28:48Speaker 1: They do that.
- 28:50Speaker 14: You know, they.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Maintain Aggie Lake right across the street from the stadium.
- 28:54Speaker 1: They do a lot of things. Like I said, all
- 28:56Speaker 1: over the Southwest, they build lakes and ponds and decks
- 29:03Speaker 1: and all kinds of things to make it more comfortable
- 29:06Speaker 1: for you and your kids and your grandkids. So go online,
- 29:13Speaker 1: contact them. LuckoRanch.com is spelled L-O-C-H-O-W. LuckoRanch.com.

- 32:54Speaker 10: Your beauty is beyond compare.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition. Don't forget,
- 33:01Speaker 1: tomorrow I visit with Kurt Bowles of the Houston Chronicle,
- 33:06Speaker 1: Tony Catalina of 247 Sports, like we do every Friday.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Ryan and Caleb in back on Monday with the Writer's Roundtable.
- 33:19Speaker 1: An 86-year-old Pocatello man, this Idaho, was bitten and scratched
- 33:24Speaker 1: by a raccoon after the animal approached him in a
- 33:28Speaker 1: neighborhood cul-de-sac and began acting strangely. Idaho Fish and Game
- 33:35Speaker 1: responded to the residents after receiving a report of an
- 33:39Speaker 1: unusual raccoon. What do you think that means? Witnesses say
- 33:43Speaker 1: the animal had been wandering around during the day, appeared lethargic,
- 33:49Speaker 1: did not respond to attempts to scare it away. The
- 33:54Speaker 1: man had stepped outside to retrieve his mail when he
- 33:58Speaker 1: noticed neighbors interacting with the raccoon. He thought the animal
- 34:02Speaker 1: may have been injured, but then it began moving toward him.
- 34:06Speaker 1: According to Fish and Game, the raccoon grabbed, bit, scratched
- 34:11Speaker 1: his legs and forearm. Another person who went to help
- 34:15Speaker 1: him was also scratched. Both people sought medical treatment following
- 34:20Speaker 1: the encounter. Fishing Game dispatched the raccoon, sent it to
- 34:26Speaker 1: the Southeastern Idaho Public Health for testing, and wonder of wonders,
- 34:32Speaker 1: the animal tested negative for rabies. Other tests still pending.
- 34:39Speaker 1: The incident comes after Fish and Game received several reports
- 34:42Speaker 1: in June of raccoons displaying unusual behavior, including appearing sick
- 34:47Speaker 1: or injured, acting lethargic, remaining in plain view during daylight hours.
- 34:53Speaker 1: That's not normal. Fish and Game submitted one of those
- 34:56Speaker 1: for testing. It tested negative for rabies, but positive for
- 35:00Speaker 1: canine distemper, a widespread disease that primarily affects canids, raccoons, skunks.
- 35:09Speaker 1: It's not transmissible to humans, but it can be transmitted
- 35:13Speaker 1: to dogs. And I always love these reports. Fishing Game
- 35:18Speaker 1: reminds residents that unusual raccoon behavior does not necessarily mean
- 35:25Speaker 1: an animal has rabies or distemper. People and pets should
- 35:29Speaker 1: maintain a safe distance from raccoon and other wildlife. Look,
- 35:34Speaker 1: this is Idaho, where there's still a culture of hunting
- 35:41Speaker 1: and outdoors. You know, I'm not saying it's bad to
- 35:49Speaker 1: contact fishing game because the proper thing happened. They killed
- 35:53Speaker 1: the raccoon. But, and like a lot of animals, they
- 36:01Speaker 1: like to pick on the older and the weaker. This
- 36:04Speaker 1: man was 86 and Get them before they get you, people.
- 36:11Speaker 1: I cannot stress that enough. Get them before they get you.
- 36:19Speaker 1: And here is another cute animal that we talk about
- 36:22Speaker 1: a lot attacking people. An otter may have been looking
- 36:29Speaker 1: for a fight with a group of young surfers in
- 36:33Speaker 1: Santa Cruz. The critter approached the group, climbed on top
- 36:39Speaker 1: of one of the surfers' boards a week ago. A
- 36:44Speaker 1: witness that caught the interaction on video told ABC7 the
- 36:49Speaker 1: otter appeared as though it wanted to attack the surfers.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Before things took a turn, one of the surfers charged
- 36:59Speaker 1: toward the otter to scare it away, created a little distance.
- 37:03Speaker 1: No injuries reported, but it is among a growing list
- 37:07Speaker 1: of encounters involving these kinds of animals. I call them attacks,
- 37:14Speaker 1: not encounters. Heather Gray, a woman paddleboarding off the coast
- 37:18Speaker 1: of Santa Cruz, we talked about her, suffered a nightmare
- 37:22Speaker 1: encounter with an overzealous sea lion that sent her straight
- 37:27Speaker 1: into the water. She was attacked while paddleboarding. It was
- 37:33Speaker 1: like a horror movie. She was bitten on the arm, hand,
- 37:37Speaker 1: feet before she fought off the sea lion. And you
- 37:41Speaker 1: know these things have some serious chompers. Video of the
- 37:47Speaker 1: incident captured by the website showed the moment Gray was
- 37:49Speaker 1: knocked off her board. The thing that was most bizarre
- 37:53Speaker 1: is it grabbed my hair. She managed to get back
- 37:57Speaker 1: on the board, headed straight for shore. The sea lion
- 38:00Speaker 1: followed her. a friend took her to urgent care. She
- 38:07Speaker 1: received tetanus and rabies shots. Gray told the station, I
- 38:13Speaker 1: know there are a lot of sea lions that are
- 38:15Speaker 1: sick right now. My first thought was, oh my gosh,
- 38:18Speaker 1: this is one of the sick sea lions. Look, I
- 38:22Speaker 1: can put them out of their misery for cheap. This year,
- 38:28Speaker 1: the Marine Mammal Center said sea lions and fur seals
- 38:31Speaker 1: around Monterey Bay have been suffering from from domoic acid poisoning.
- 38:36Speaker 1: They don't know why there's been an increase. The center
- 38:39Speaker 1: says the toxin caused animals to behave unpredictably. You mean
- 38:44Speaker 1: more unpredictably than normal animals behave? More than that? Caused
- 38:53Speaker 1: by algae blooms. The neurotoxin accumulates in small fish or
- 38:58Speaker 1: eaten by marine animals, including the seals. Come on, people.
- 39:05Speaker 1: They're not cute. They're vicious. Given the chance, they will
- 39:10Speaker 1: kill you. A training dive off Quebec's Gaspé region turned
- 39:18Speaker 1: into a rare shark attack that left a student injured.
- 39:23Speaker 1: The male diver in the water with another student and
- 39:28Speaker 1: the dive shop's general manager were when a great white struck.
- 39:34Speaker 1: The diver suffered injuries to his chest, shoulders, and back,
- 39:38Speaker 1: received first aid at the site, was taken to a hospital.
- 39:42Speaker 1: His injuries are not life-threatening. It happened in a flash,
- 39:47Speaker 1: said the shop manager, Steve Melanson. who described the shark
- 39:52Speaker 1: as so big, good description, so big, and said it
- 39:57Speaker 1: was his first shark encounter in roughly 2,000 dives in
- 40:01Speaker 1: over 15 years. All dives with the center are now
- 40:07Speaker 1: halted for the rest of the season. That seems like
- 40:10Speaker 1: an overreaction. While shark attacks in the Gulf of St.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Lawrence remain uncommon, experts say great white numbers have increased.
- 40:20Speaker 1: The St. Lawrence Shark Observatory cites climate change, which keeps
- 40:26Speaker 1: seals and sharks in warmer waters longer, and protections for
- 40:30Speaker 1: the endangered species as factors. Protections for the endangered species.
- 40:36Speaker 1: There are a lot of them now. The group stresses
- 40:42Speaker 1: that the overall risk to the public hasn't changed, urges
- 40:46Speaker 1: the Basic precautions like avoiding swimming near seal colonies. That's always,
- 40:52Speaker 1: this is our lesson of the day, people. We always
- 40:54Speaker 1: have to try to have a lesson for the day.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Don't swim near the seals. Not only will the seals
- 41:02Speaker 1: attack you, the sharks who are eating the seals will
- 41:05Speaker 1: attack you. A 2020 study cited a rise in, quote,
- 41:11Speaker 1: the wildlife selfie.
- 41:13Speaker 9: Look.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Anybody taking a wildlife selfie, I call it natural selection.
- 41:20Speaker 1: If they're that stupid. Okay? I mean, we've talked about
- 41:27Speaker 1: this so often. It happens so many places. Ethel, move
- 41:33Speaker 1: a little closer. A little bit closer. Get a little closer.

- 42:20Speaker 2: The Dallas Cowboys are getting set up for a Thursday
- 42:23Speaker 2: night football matchup tomorrow night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Despite it being the third game in 12 days for Dallas,
- 42:30Speaker 2: they are getting a break facing the Bucs' backup quarterback,
- 42:34Speaker 2: Jalen Daniels. They still have several injuries on the defensive front,
- 42:39Speaker 2: most notably Kobe Durant and DeMarvian Overshone. Owner Jerry Jones
- 42:44Speaker 2: spoke on 105.3 The Fan today about potentially not playing
- 42:48Speaker 2: certain players against a backup QB.
- 42:51Speaker 9: You certainly have a better chance if the main quarterback
- 42:55Speaker 9: isn't playing. Look at some games this year, and the
- 42:59Speaker 9: backup quarterback comes in and wins a lot of games.
- 43:02Speaker 9: you really do have success with backup quarterbacks early. There's
- 43:06Speaker 9: other things that are getting teams compromised or getting them beaten.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Kickoff tomorrow is set for 7-15. Coverage on Amazon Prime Video.

- 44:46Speaker 1: Brazos Running Company. Hey, thanks for being with us on
- 44:51Speaker 1: the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition for a Thursday afternoon. Botswana's government, uh-oh,
- 44:59Speaker 1: this is going to be a problem, authorized the killing
- 45:02Speaker 1: of 23 elephants for its Independence Day celebrations this week,
- 45:07Speaker 1: drawing criticism from conservationists and one of its former presidents.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Listen to the story. The licenses to hunt the elephants
- 45:18Speaker 1: were issued in districts across the country, with each receiving
- 45:21Speaker 1: a portion of the overall quota. The elephants would provide
- 45:26Speaker 1: meat for needy rural communities. We wouldn't want to kill
- 45:32Speaker 1: an animal so people who are starving can eat it.
- 45:38Speaker 1: The license to hunt the elephants, African savannah elephants, listed
- 45:46Speaker 1: as endangered, but the Southern African nation of Botswana has
- 45:50Speaker 1: a large elephant population, listen to me, estimated at around 130,000.
- 45:56Speaker 1: The most of any country is controlled annual elephant hunting quotas,
- 46:04Speaker 1: meaning they have been doing this a while because they're
- 46:09Speaker 1: trying to manage the numbers. which is what hunting is
- 46:15Speaker 1: partially about, keeping nature in balance. Botswana lifted a ban
- 46:24Speaker 1: on hunting in 2019 because of the growing numbers. They
- 46:29Speaker 1: issued annual quotas to hunt between 200 and 400 elephants.
- 46:34Speaker 1: The government authorized this week the killing of dozens of
- 46:37Speaker 1: antelope as part of the initiative. coinciding with their 60th
- 46:42Speaker 1: anniversary of their independence from Britain. Of course, the Elephant
- 46:48Speaker 1: Protection Society is involved. Of course, elephants can be extremely
- 46:56Speaker 1: destructive and dangerous. Several African countries has to confront the
- 47:03Speaker 1: problem of growing herds, destroying farmers' crops and infrastructure. Human-wildlife
- 47:11Speaker 1: conflict is a major issue for many African countries. There
- 47:17Speaker 1: are other nations that have annual quotas to control the population.
- 47:26Speaker 1: Botswana attracts international tourists for its rich wildlife. The elephant
- 47:33Speaker 1: numbers were an international talking point two years ago. when
- 47:38Speaker 1: then-President Massisi and his government responded to criticism of trophy
- 47:43Speaker 1: hunting from the UK and Germany. I love the quote.
- 47:49Speaker 1: It's very easy to sit in Berlin and have an
- 47:53Speaker 1: opinion on our affairs in Botswana. Adding that managing elephants was, quote,
- 48:00Speaker 1: no joke. The deputy director of the government's Department of Wildlife,
- 48:09Speaker 1: Demacazo Nishibi said wildlife conservation must deliver meaningful benefits to
- 48:16Speaker 1: the communities that live alongside the wildlife and contribute to
- 48:21Speaker 1: its protection. I mean, this is what hunting does, people.
- 48:31Speaker 1: It is a conservation one way to help conservation is
- 48:42Speaker 1: by quotas and removing animals. If there's too many, they
- 48:49Speaker 1: starve to death and the people living off the land
- 48:53Speaker 1: starve to death. But the elephant huggers don't want to
- 48:57Speaker 1: hear that. A woman was on her lunch break in Brisbane, Australia,
- 49:05Speaker 1: when an unexpected guest crashed through the ceiling of her apartment. Tiana,
- 49:12Speaker 1: no last name, 23-year-old, lives and works from home in Brisbane,
- 49:17Speaker 1: began hearing noise. As the sound grew louder, she grabbed
- 49:21Speaker 1: her phone, hit record, like you do. Don't grab a gun,
- 49:27Speaker 1: grab your phone. That'll help you. Seconds later, possums, plural,
- 49:33Speaker 1: came crashing through her ceiling and landed at her feet.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Possums have become an increasingly common presence in Australia's urban areas.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Earlier this year, a study published in the Journal of
- 49:49Speaker 1: People and Nature examined 2,400 wildlife rescue reports involving animals
- 49:54Speaker 1: found in and around buildings across Australia. Australia is growing.
- 50:00Speaker 1: The findings showed that brushtail and ringtail possums accounted for
- 50:04Speaker 1: half of all cases. By far the most common native
- 50:09Speaker 1: animals occupying human-made structures discovered in roof cavities, wall spaces, garages.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Tiana said her and her roommate have been dealing with
- 50:22Speaker 1: possums for two years. Constant noise in the ceiling. Why
- 50:26Speaker 1: have you let it go two years? We brought it
- 50:31Speaker 1: up to the real estate agency and nothing really happened.
- 50:36Speaker 1: They sent someone out to remove the possums, but it
- 50:39Speaker 1: didn't work. Tiana, call me up. Pay my airfare. I
- 50:44Speaker 1: will get rid of your possum problems in probably about
- 50:48Speaker 1: three to four minutes. Tiana jumped at the chance to
- 50:52Speaker 1: capture footage of what was causing the commotion. She never
- 50:57Speaker 1: expected to see possums crashing through her ceiling in her kitchen.
- 51:03Speaker 1: She said the section of roof had been previously damaged
- 51:06Speaker 1: during a cyclone, creating the opportunity for the possums to
- 51:11Speaker 1: move in. She suspects two possums in the roof space
- 51:18Speaker 1: had been fighting and the altercation spilled into her home.
- 51:24Speaker 1: For now, the hole has been covered with a board
- 51:27Speaker 1: bolted over the area. She's waiting further repairs, renewed efforts
- 51:32Speaker 1: to remove the possums. It's gone viral, 1.7 million views, 83,000
- 51:39Speaker 1: likes since she posted it. Tiana hopes the attention that
- 51:45Speaker 1: it's generated will lead to swift action. Don't hold your breath, Tiana.
- 51:50Speaker 1: We're talking about the government. Don't hold your breath. You
- 51:54Speaker 1: need to do it yourself, sweetheart. You need to do
- 51:57Speaker 1: it yourself. Or get somebody to do it for you
- 52:02Speaker 1: and get them before they get you. They've already gotten
- 52:05Speaker 1: you once. I can't help you if they do it
- 52:08Speaker 1: a second time. You know what I'm saying? Don't be stupid.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Shoot the possums and the noise will be gone. Does
- 52:21Speaker 1: somebody really have to tell her that? She's put up
- 52:23Speaker 1: with the noise for two years with possums in her attic. Look,
- 52:28Speaker 1: she probably didn't have a lot of money, okay? I mean,
- 52:31Speaker 1: I'm guessing. The house is not in great repair. Bullets
- 52:36Speaker 1: are cheap. I'm just saying, bullets are cheap. Our animal
- 52:41Speaker 1: attack segment is brought to you by each week by
- 52:45Speaker 1: Schulte Roofing, home of the Bulletproof Roof Guarantee.
- 52:51Speaker 16: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 52:53Speaker 16: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around, and then
- 52:55Speaker 16: I found Schulte Roofing, and boy, I'm glad I did.
- 52:58Speaker 16: The folks at Schulte guided me every step of the way.
- 53:01Speaker 16: They showed me my options. They told me what my
- 53:03Speaker 16: out-of-pocket cost would be after insurance. They took the complication
- 53:07Speaker 16: out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They took off
- 53:10Speaker 16: the damaged roof, put on the new roof, did all
- 53:12Speaker 16: the cleanup, and I had my new roof in one day.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Schulte Roofing, the home of the bulletproof roofing. Hey, welcome back.
- 53:23Speaker 1: It's the Clark Eisenhower outdoor edition for a Thursday tomorrow.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Kurt Bowles, Tony Catalina, Ryan and Caleb on the job
- 53:33Speaker 1: tomorrow on the show on Monday. Post game overreaction Monday
- 53:40Speaker 1: with the writers round table. Rusty and cease will be
- 53:43Speaker 1: with me. Mondays are always fun. We'll know how much
- 53:49Speaker 1: fun by Saturday evening. I'm sure. And this from a
- 53:55Speaker 1: concerned listener. This is in Miami. A man accused of
- 54:03Speaker 1: trying to smuggle live birds through the Miami International Airport
- 54:10Speaker 1: in his underwear. Federal authorities said Alberto Hernandez Castillo, a
- 54:18Speaker 1: legal permanent resident of the U.S., arrived from Cuba. On Sunday,
- 54:25Speaker 1: customs officers sent him to a secondary inspection after noticing
- 54:31Speaker 1: what they called an unexplained bulge near his waist. A
- 54:42Speaker 1: pat-down allegedly uncovered six plastic containers hidden in pockets sewn
- 54:50Speaker 1: into his underwear. Authorities say the containers held 10 live birds.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Hernandez Castillo allegedly said the birds were for his, quote,
- 55:05Speaker 1: personal use. I mean, man, I'd like to know what
- 55:14Speaker 1: that personal use is with the live birds. Is it,
- 55:19Speaker 1: is he eating them? They don't say what kind of
- 55:21Speaker 1: birds they are. Okay. Tropical birds, my guess, from Cuba.
- 55:28Speaker 1: Could be parakeets.
- 55:31Speaker 15: Parrots.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Had to be fairly small. Mr. Castillo is charged with
- 55:40Speaker 1: smuggling goods and released on a $ 25, 000 bond. I tell you,
- 55:45Speaker 1: remember the show? They had the show based on Miami Airport.
- 55:49Speaker 1: I really like that. I don't know if it's History, Discovery,
- 55:53Speaker 1: one of the channels. You know, 24 hours at the
- 55:57Speaker 1: Miami International Airport. Oh, my goodness gracious. I love that show.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Because you never know what's coming through there. You know
- 56:06Speaker 1: there's a lot of contraband flowing through Miami. You know that.
- 56:14Speaker 1: I mean, this isn't the first time, even close. It
- 56:18Speaker 1: won't be the last time.
- 56:20Speaker 9: Snakes.
- 56:21Speaker 1: Monkeys, cocaine, uh, all kinds of animals, weird animals tried
- 56:32Speaker 1: trying to be smuggled through. If this one guy was
- 56:35Speaker 1: caught with the 10 birds, how many animals do you
- 56:38Speaker 1: think are, are actually successfully smuggled through the Miami international airport?
- 56:45Speaker 1: I mean, it's got to be substantial, doesn't it? Um,
- 56:51Speaker 1: I just, I wish I could talk to Alberto and
- 56:56Speaker 1: let him explain what he's doing with those smuggled tin
- 57:03Speaker 1: birds from Cuba for his personal use. Love.
- 57:21Speaker 14: Is a burning thing.
- 57:25Speaker 1: And it makes presence valley flooring and design has been
- 57:29Speaker 1: around a while over 25 years chuck and the great
- 57:34Speaker 1: staff over there have been putting flooring and granite countertops
- 57:39Speaker 1: in homes and businesses they have over a million square
- 57:44Speaker 1: feet of flooring carpet tile laminates wood um Plus the
- 57:50Speaker 1: huge granite building next door where they cut everything to
- 57:56Speaker 1: exact specification. And if you're anything like us, we're not
- 58:00Speaker 1: real good at decorating, but they have people on hand
- 58:03Speaker 1: that will help you make those kinds of decisions. Whether
- 58:06Speaker 1: you're doing one room, building a new home, own a duplex,
- 58:11Speaker 1: entire office building or apartment complex. These are the people
- 58:15Speaker 1: that get it done day after day after day. It's
- 58:18Speaker 1: Brazos Valley Furniture. Flooring and Design, right there at Rock
- 58:23Speaker 1: Prairie and Old Welborn Road in College Station.
