- 0:03We get a lot of people who come in and they're like, I don't really know what I am,
- 0:08but I'm interested in all of this.
- 0:10And that's where Courtney and August have created this amazing community that there are just so
- 0:15many people to ask and so many people that come to these kinds of things.
- 0:18And Courtney and August are so knowledgeable that they can usually point you in the right direction
- 0:23and be like, oh hey, there's this book over here, there's book over here.
- 0:26That's what I love the most about the shop is that Courtney and August, they run it not just
- 0:31as a shop but as a community meeting place.

- 0:40Hi, Caitlyn.
- 0:41Hi, Cassie.
- 0:42Hi, creepy people.
- 0:44Hello.
- 0:45If you're new to our creepy corner of the world, this is PNW Haunts and Homicides, where we chat about
- 0:51true crime, paranormal, and all things creepy or witchy in the Pacific Northwest.
- 0:59We do a tarot reading at the end of every episode for deeper insight into the topic.
- 1:05So make sure you stick around if you're into that.
- 1:08And if you're not, then I'm not even really sure why you're here, but I guess welcome.
- 1:14Thanks.
- 1:15You can listen to the other stuff, I guess it's fine.
- 1:20But this episode, we actually did an Oracle reading and a rune reading.
- 1:26Yes.
- 1:28And Caitlyn missed it all.
- 1:32Oh, it hurt.
- 1:35Her heart hurt. I felt really bad.
- 1:36We even talked about you because I was like, I feel so bad because she had to sit through all
- 1:43of the creepy dolls interview and then she doesn't even get to do the witchy interview.
- 1:48Yeah, you know what? That is my luck. That's what that is.
- 1:54And so I'm sorry, also, spoiler alert, there might be some creepy dolls coming.
- 1:59I'm just going to throw that out there.
- 2:00I was wondering why you said that rather than their names.
- 2:03And I was going to say they're such lovely people.
- 2:06And I remember.
- 2:06Because we haven't talked to them yet, technically.
- 2:09That you guys have heard on this timeline.
- 2:14But this time we are talking with a local witchy shop called Through the Veil.
- 2:21And they are in Hillsboro in the Orenco area.
- 2:24They're kind of tucked back in from the main strip, but very easy to find.
- 2:29And it's just magical and they sell magical things.
- 2:34Yeah.
- 2:34And I am so excited for future.
- 2:38Caitlyn.
- 2:40And also Cassie.
- 2:42She will be there.
- 2:43But yeah, very excited for future us tomorrow us.
- 2:48We're going to go.
- 2:49And Caitlyn's never been.
- 2:50I've been a bunch of times.
- 2:52Actually, in this episode, we're going to talk about it.
- 2:54But they have gatherings.
- 2:57And they had a full moon gathering that I went to.
- 3:00It was really fun.
- 3:03The moon was just out.
- 3:04It was shining on all of us.
- 3:06We had a fire pit.
- 3:07We did a meditation, a group meditation.
- 3:10It was really fun.
- 3:12That just sounds so lovely.
- 3:14Yeah.
- 3:15Do you want to know what I did?
- 3:19No.
- 3:20I gave my dog antibiotics and I gave her an Epsom salt soak.
- 3:31So that was.
- 3:32If you want to know about that story, join our Patreon and listen to Book Discussion.
- 3:37Yeah, I cannot tell that story twice.
- 3:40Yeah.
- 3:41I intentionally did not tell Cassie everything that occurred because I was like,
- 3:48I can't keep telling this story.
- 3:50And dog mom problems.
- 3:54No.
- 3:54So yeah, she couldn't join because of dog problems.
- 3:59But never fear, I was not alone.
- 4:02Because when she know it, I ran into our Patreon Courtney.
- 4:09Amazing.
- 4:10Who we ran into also at the two girls one go show.
- 4:13I just, I can't with this.
- 4:16It was so funny.
- 4:17I saw her and I was like, oh my god again.
- 4:19Like, yeah.
- 4:20But it was really excited because I was like, thank gosh,
- 4:24I have someone here with me that I know.
- 4:26And not like people were not friendly and not nice.
- 4:29But you know, you just don't know anybody.
- 4:31And it's, yeah, I'm sure ability.
- 4:33You know?
- 4:34So it's nice.
- 4:35Thank you Courtney.
- 4:35Thanks for being my buddy for the night.
- 4:38Buddy.
- 4:38My full moon buddy.
- 4:40Yeah.
- 4:41Because her other full moon buddy was having a real full moon night.
- 4:46No.
- 4:46Yeah.
- 4:47Like an ER doctor.
- 4:48Moon night.
- 4:50So.
- 4:50Oh boy.
- 4:51Lovely.
- 4:52Yeah.
- 4:54That was fun.
- 4:54Should we get into this episode?
- 4:57I suppose so.
- 4:59All right.
- 5:00Bye, Caitlyn.
- 5:00Get outa here.
- 5:01Okay.
- 5:02Okay.
- 5:04So today we're with Courtney and Lizzy.
- 5:08And Courtney is owner of a local shop called Through the Veil.
- 5:13And Lizzy runs some of the events there.
- 5:16Is that correct?
- 5:16Yes.
- 5:17All right.
- 5:19Well, Courtney, do you want to tell us a little bit about your beautiful shop
- 5:22and how it all came to be?
- 5:23So it is a witch shop.
- 5:26I guess how it came to be a few years ago.
- 5:30My husband and I were dating then.
- 5:32Of course, we weren't married yet.
- 5:34And we went to Salem, Massachusetts.
- 5:36And I saw all the witchy shops there and just fell in love with that whole
- 5:39environment and such.
- 5:43How could you not?
- 5:44I know.
- 5:45And Salem is like the best place for it.
- 5:47So.
- 5:47So yeah, so he had owned a spiritual shop before.
- 5:52It was more of like all different spiritualities and religions.
- 5:55So he he'd done that for like, I think four years or something.
- 6:00And he'd worked in other metaphysical shops.
- 6:02So he was very adamant that he was done with that life.
- 6:05And he did not want to do it again.
- 6:09I don't know how I put the bug in his ear, but the whole drive back
- 6:14from Massachusetts to Michigan.
- 6:19It's like a seven hour drive.
- 6:20I was like, well, if we had a shop, we would carry these items.
- 6:26And like, we're making a list in a journal and doing all this stuff like totally hypothetically.
- 6:33But eventually, I think he he warmed up to the idea.
- 6:36And even moving to Oregon, he did not want to come to Portland area right away.
- 6:41He had lived here in the past.
- 6:43Oh, really?
- 6:44I can't imagine why.
- 6:45Right.
- 6:46Yeah.
- 6:47So.
- 6:47But yeah, eventually we ended up out here.
- 6:51We first moved to Salem.
- 6:53We were kind of thinking, like I said, he didn't really want to do Portland again.
- 6:56And we were kind of thinking, oh, we'll make a Salem Massachusetts of the West.
- 7:00And so we were there a few months.
- 7:03We just weren't finding a good property really for a store and the situation that we wanted,
- 7:09which was like a live work type situation.
- 7:12And then we found this building here and
- 7:15everything just kind of fell into place.
- 7:17It was meant to be.
- 7:19It was like it.
- 7:22So Hillsboro is probably like 20 to 30 minutes from Portland.
- 7:27So you guys aren't in the main main city.
- 7:30Right.
- 7:30And then even then you're kind of back from the main road too.
- 7:36So I feel like you're kind of like tucked in this little magical section of Hillsboro.
- 7:43It's awesome.
- 7:44It's really close to everything.
- 7:46But it doesn't feel like it is.
- 7:47Right.
- 7:48And we love that about it.
- 7:49This neighborhood, it is a neighborhood.
- 7:52So it's, you know, regular houses all around us were the last like
- 7:56but hold of a commercial type place in this this neighborhood from way back when.
- 8:02And like this neighborhood has fought against like modernizing.
- 8:08Like they fought against putting in sidewalks.
- 8:10They fought against putting in street lights.
- 8:12So it's really awesome that we're kind of like
- 8:15keeping a hold of that.
- 8:17Ruleness.
- 8:19You love that.
- 8:20It's like your own little bubble and kind of like what is basically a city now.
- 8:26So it's growing so fast out here.
- 8:28It's crazy.
- 8:28And yes.
- 8:30So I understand there was some remodeling involved when you when you first got the place.
- 8:35Oh yeah.
- 8:36Yeah.
- 8:37It's just it's an old building.
- 8:38So it's from 1908.
- 8:40It was originally like a mercantile,
- 8:43grocer type building when it was built.
- 8:46It was built by the Oregon nursing company.
- 8:51Oh wow.
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:53And so the previous owners, I think they had gotten it in the 80s.
- 8:58They'd done a lot to the building.
- 9:01I know there was a fire at one point.
- 9:03And so they had to rebuild the storefront itself.
- 9:06And they've tried to keep everything as original as possible.
- 9:09But by the time we got to it, it had sat for a couple of years and it had some active
- 9:15roof leaks unfortunately.
- 9:17And so that's always something that's like you had to get on top of it right away or you're
- 9:22going to have problems.
- 9:23So yeah.
- 9:26And then they were using the storefront area for mostly woodworking.
- 9:31They made some wagon wheels and stuff.
- 9:34And they had a large collection of old like antiques and just various like
- 9:41oddity type things and just things.
- 9:44So it was not ready to be a store for sure.
- 9:51We had to basically go in.
- 9:52There was a couple of rooms built over there.
- 9:55And we had to take those out and just redo the whole thing.
- 9:59So you guys did such a good job.
- 10:01It's so beautifully decorated.
- 10:03I can't believe the ceiling is that's my favorite part of the whole place.
- 10:07It's so beautiful.
- 10:09It's like a black.
- 10:10Is it black ceiling?
- 10:12It's black like it's a glossy black tin ceiling.
- 10:15It is real tin.
- 10:16Oh wow.
- 10:17So but it was it's not original to the building though.
- 10:19We installed that ourselves.
- 10:21So it's beautiful in there.
- 10:23Looks like you guys just took so much care.
- 10:25The space has such good vibes.
- 10:27I love going in there.
- 10:28I do remember like the first time I was in there.
- 10:32There was a witch mask on the wall.
- 10:35And with a sign that said it was there.
- 10:37When you guys moved in, is that still there?
- 10:39It is.
- 10:40Yeah.
- 10:41It'll stay there.
- 10:42It's like a little bit of a traffic.
- 10:46So that was there when you guys bought the place?
- 10:48Yeah.
- 10:48Yeah.
- 10:49Like I said, they just had a collection of stuff.
- 10:52And so that was still hanging on the pillar right,
- 10:55roughly right where it is now.
- 10:57We took it down to paint obviously and put it back.
- 11:00But and we fixed it.
- 11:01We put batteries in it because it has a button.
- 11:03You push it and it like sings and does funny stuff.
- 11:06But yeah, it's very old.
- 11:08And the some of the I think the grandkids of the people
- 11:12who own the building for us have been in the shop.
- 11:14And one of them was like, hey, I put that there.
- 11:17And so that was fine.
- 11:18That's all I love that.
- 11:21That is so flipping cute.
- 11:23Yeah.
- 11:24Okay, so let's go into what Lizzy runs.
- 11:29You said she runs full moon gatherings and and sabbats.
- 11:34Sabbits.
- 11:35I was like, there's there's a word I can't pronounce
- 11:38and I don't want to sound stupid.
- 11:39Not at all.
- 11:41And she teaches some classes.
- 11:43Yes.
- 11:44Oh, okay.
- 11:46So tell me about all those things.
- 11:47Yeah.
- 11:47So every month we do a new moon and full moon circles.
- 11:52My friend Lisa runs the new moon ones.
- 11:55We do a lot of drumming for that.
- 11:58That's a drumming circle for the new moons.
- 12:00For the full moons, I do those.
- 12:03And then I also do the sabbats which are like to pagan holy days.
- 12:07There are eight of them a year and it follows the the wheel of the year.
- 12:13I also as Courtney said occasionally teach classes.
- 12:16I did a class on honor your ancestors even if they suck.
- 12:21A lot of people.
- 12:23A lot of people in the pagan community come from a hard background.
- 12:29Either some of their family, they get a lot of flack from their family about being pagan.
- 12:34We get a lot of evangelical castoffs.
- 12:38You know, people that didn't find a home in the church.
- 12:41And they're finding a home in paganism.
- 12:43But that creates kind of that tension within their family line.
- 12:47Or they come from religious trauma.
- 12:50And so they've split from their family because you know, they they follow a really hard religious line.
- 12:57So connecting to your ancestors even when there is kind of that tension, it's still possible.
- 13:03And so I taught a class around that around how to kind of get around
- 13:08the fact that your immediate ancestors really suck.
- 13:11I'm also going to teach a class on runes.
- 13:15I've been working with runes for about about 12 years now.
- 13:20And yeah.
- 13:23So the the sabbats that we do, the pagan holy days, we make that accessible to everybody.
- 13:30We don't have any particular like line that we follow.
- 13:34Like we don't do Wiccan sabbats.
- 13:36We don't do druid sabbats.
- 13:37We don't do Hellenistic sabbats.
- 13:38Like it's just kind of an all around pagan thing.
- 13:41We follow the wheel of the year.
- 13:44So the next one is going to be you all, which is the winter solstice or Albin Arthin.
- 13:49And I think it's a good time.
- 13:52We usually talk about what the sabbat is, the significance of it.
- 13:58And then we usually have something to do a lot of time.
- 14:02It's setting an intention for the coming year.
- 14:05For you all, especially how to kind of honor the passing of the year
- 14:10and what you want the next year to look like.
- 14:12So yeah.
- 14:14That's what we do.
- 14:16That is so cool.
- 14:17So can you just show up to these as they're exactly?
- 14:21Absolutely.
- 14:21A minor do you have to sign up?
- 14:23You don't have to sign up.
- 14:23You just show up.
- 14:24All of it is on the stores website throughtheveilshop.com.
- 14:30It's also on Facebook and Instagram.
- 14:34And then there's also a Facebook community group
- 14:37for the shop where we post about the events.
- 14:40Book clubs.
- 14:42We are also going to be doing a book club coming up again.
- 14:46Probably in January.
- 14:48Question mark.
- 14:49Yeah.
- 14:49Yeah.
- 14:50Yeah.
- 14:50Oh, that's awesome.
- 14:51That's right.
- 14:52When every year I'm like, I'm going to read more books this year.
- 14:55That's my resolution.
- 14:56There you go.
- 14:56Here's a way to keep that.
- 14:59Yeah.
- 14:59Exactly.
- 15:00Yeah, we do, we do witchy books.
- 15:03So I think the next one that we're going to do is the Morrigan book by Courtney Weber.
- 15:08Right?
- 15:08Yeah.
- 15:09So Courtney Weber actually reached out to us.
- 15:14She lives in the area so she's going to come talk to us about the book once we reread it.
- 15:18Oh, wow.
- 15:19That's awesome.
- 15:20I'll have to keep my eye out.
- 15:21That's really interesting.
- 15:23Is it the same for book clubs?
- 15:25Do you do it at the shop?
- 15:27Do you do it virtually?
- 15:28Yeah, we do both for the book club.
- 15:31So it is at the shop and then we do a Zoom link as well.
- 15:34And we often record it.
- 15:36So if people miss it, they can catch up.
- 15:38Oh, that's cool.
- 15:39I love that.
- 15:40Yeah, that's also a great place to talk about.
- 15:42Like if you have questions about the path that you're on,
- 15:47we get a lot of people who come in and they're like, oh,
- 15:49I really know what I am, but I'm interested in all of this.
- 15:54And that's where Courtney and August have created this amazing community
- 15:57that there are just so many people that ask and so many people that come to these kinds of things.
- 16:02And Courtney and August are so knowledgeable that they can usually point you
- 16:05in the right direction and be like, oh, hey, there's this book over here.
- 16:08There's book over here.
- 16:09If you're interested in Druidry, go talk to Lizzy because
- 16:12they'll try to drag you into that.
- 16:14So I love that.
- 16:16It's just like a safe space for everyone to come.
- 16:20Absolutely.
- 16:21Absolutely.
- 16:21That's what I love the most about the shop is that
- 16:25Courtney and August, they run it not just as a shop, but as a community meeting place.
- 16:29It's a place that you can come and you can ask questions.
- 16:32I've seen people come into the shop that just have
- 16:36generic questions about witchcraft.
- 16:37There are people that come in that say, hey,
- 16:40I've got something gross in my apartment.
- 16:43This feeling, how do I get rid of that?
- 16:46What would you recommend for that?
- 16:48We have people that come in that want to do,
- 16:50they want to disconnect from loved ones or ex-boyfriends.
- 16:54They want to know how the best way to do that.
- 16:57It's just such a great resource to come in and ask those kinds of questions
- 17:02that you can't really find anywhere else.
- 17:04You can throw it out to Google, but you're going to get 15 different things.
- 17:07Oh my god.
- 17:07Or you could come into the shop and talk to Courtney or August or
- 17:12anyone that's working there or if I'm hanging around that day
- 17:15and get first-hand information on the best way to go about it.
- 17:19Yeah, I feel like sometimes you don't even know what task.
- 17:22So you're just like, what do I even type in Google for this problem?
- 17:26I don't even know.
- 17:26Absolutely.
- 17:28Absolutely.
- 17:29And that's recording August or great because they can kind of pull that out and be like,
- 17:33oh, hey, well, have you tried Palo Santo?
- 17:36Like, you know, yeah, I've got some sage over here.
- 17:38You know, here's some graveyard dirt.
- 17:40Let's try that.
- 17:41A thing that I find happens a lot, especially in some of the witchy groups I follow on Facebook,
- 17:47is you'll ask a question and you'll get a lot of judgment.
- 17:52Whereas like, you know, some people want to do something and other people have an idea that
- 17:57what you should be doing and that's going to be bad karma or all this.
- 18:01And everybody has different belief systems and we really try to honor that in our shop.
- 18:06And we just give you the information.
- 18:09You know, it's not our place to say what you should or shouldn't do.
- 18:13It's your, your own person.
- 18:15So we just give the information and we carry the supplies.
- 18:19So that's like, something that's very important to me is to do that judgment-free.
- 18:25Yeah.
- 18:27Yeah, I like that.
- 18:28I don't like rules.
- 18:29So and I'm always changing my mind too.
- 18:31So I'm like, I reserve the right to change my mind about that.
- 18:33Right.
- 18:35100% 100%.
- 18:38Do you guys collect your own graveyard dirt or do you get it sourced?
- 18:42We do not collect our own.
- 18:45I unfortunately do not have time for such.
- 18:48Can you imagine?
- 18:49Extracurricular activités.
- 18:52Courtney, let's go.
- 18:54We're going to the graveyard.
- 18:56Let's do it.
- 18:56Shops out a dirt.
- 18:57We need to go.
- 18:58All right.
- 18:59So we do, we do source it.
- 19:03We do try to get it from legitimate sources and that sort of thing.
- 19:07Of course, how much can you really know if it's legit?
- 19:10Right.
- 19:10But I am very excited, though, since we're on the topic of Grave Dirt.
- 19:15I just found a new source.
- 19:18That I've ordered from.
- 19:19And they have special Grave Dirt.
- 19:22They have Grave Dirt from Disentered Graves.
- 19:27They have Grave Dirt from Freshly Dug Graves.
- 19:31And they have a Grave Salts, which is like a Grave Dirt mixed with Salts.
- 19:35And such.
- 19:36Wow.
- 19:36That's right.
- 19:37You know, right?
- 19:38I'm very excited.
- 19:39That's awesome.
- 19:40That is super awesome.
- 19:42And they work in the Funerary business.
- 19:44So I'm pretty sure that it's legit.
- 19:46I would hope so.
- 19:47Yeah.
- 19:48Yeah.
- 19:48That's a great, great connection to have.
- 19:51I didn't even think about that.
- 19:53Great.
- 19:53Kind of a good side hustle too.
- 19:55Right?
- 19:55If you're like, if you've got your own mortuary,
- 19:57you'll be like, yo, what's up?
- 19:58Like I got the good dirt.
- 19:59Yeah.
- 20:00Yeah.
- 20:00I cannot wait.
- 20:02Because I got like spell kits and stuff too.
- 20:04That comes with things like Corpse Water.
- 20:07Like they wash down the corpses before they do stuff to it.
- 20:11So lots of things.
- 20:14Stuff like I like that weird like stuff.
- 20:17So I need to I need to all about graveyard.
- 20:20Super awesome.
- 20:21Skeletons and oh my gosh, everything creepy.
- 20:25You have to tell me about you have a coffin table
- 20:28in there with a skeleton in it, right?
- 20:31It's probably not as cool as it sounds,
- 20:33but it's just a coffin table.
- 20:35It's actually cooler.
- 20:36Yeah.
- 20:37It's really cool to look at.
- 20:40So we made that the coffin table out of like plexiglass.
- 20:44So it's clear so you can see through it.
- 20:46And then put some feet on it and all that.
- 20:50And then we got a skeleton that is gold.
- 20:55And I just decorated it in flowers and lights and low
- 20:58which had and put them in there.
- 21:01And that's where he lived.
- 21:03So awesome.
- 21:04It's so beautiful.
- 21:05Is that for sale?
- 21:06It is not.
- 21:07No, I'm sorry.
- 21:08Finally, someone tried to rent it from a slash year too
- 21:12for Halloween.
- 21:13It's like, oh, that's a good idea.
- 21:15Maybe you should just put a tutorial on how to make it.
- 21:19Yeah, I could probably come up with that.
- 21:21It wasn't, I mean, the hardest part obviously is
- 21:25is cutting the plexiglass and not breaking it.
- 21:28But yeah, I'd have to hire someone to do it.
- 21:32Right.
- 21:32Yeah.
- 21:33And plexiglass isn't cheap anymore.
- 21:35Holy cow.
- 21:36I know.
- 21:36Oh, I know.
- 21:38Do you have any other art that you make
- 21:41and put around the shop like that?
- 21:43Oh, yeah.
- 21:44Yeah.
- 21:44There's tons of art in there.
- 21:47We have like a big right above the fireplace
- 21:51is like a 3D statue thing of Hecate.
- 21:56Yeah.
- 21:56So I do a lot of bone art that we sell in the shop.
- 22:00Some of it's real bones and some of it's
- 22:03we call vegan for those people who are--
- 22:07We just want to--
- 22:08--just get bought out.
- 22:08I love it.
- 22:09Yeah.
- 22:10Vegan bone art.
- 22:12And then what else?
- 22:14I make so much stuff.
- 22:15I don't even know.
- 22:16There's a pair of wings in there I've made.
- 22:19I made like the chandelier that's in the middle.
- 22:21And you made that?
- 22:23Yeah.
- 22:24The robes, the robes and stuff.
- 22:26Yeah.
- 22:27The icing gowns that are in there I've made.
- 22:30She's incredibly artistic.
- 22:32Like she's so talented.
- 22:34She really is.
- 22:35Definitely shows when you go in there for sure.
- 22:38Nice.
- 22:38Absolutely.
- 22:39Tell my husband you can never leave me.
- 22:41[LAUGHTER]
- 22:44For the drum circle, do you have to have your own drum?
- 22:48No.
- 22:49Lisa makes her drums and brings extra ones for everybody.
- 22:54So you can just show up.
- 22:56The only thing that is good to bring her chairs
- 23:00because most of the time we're sitting and drumming
- 23:03and stuff and so having--
- 23:04there are some chairs there.
- 23:06There are benches and rocking chairs available.
- 23:09That fills up pretty quick.
- 23:10Well, that's good to know.
- 23:11OK.
- 23:12Yeah.
- 23:13Yeah.
- 23:13And you can even, as far as drums go,
- 23:16because she does have a limited number.
- 23:19So sometimes people will share or pass them around.
- 23:22But you can bring any kind of percussion type.
- 23:25We've had people bring rattles or little like--
- 23:30Dissarie doodles.
- 23:31I don't know what--
- 23:32Really?
- 23:33Thank you.
- 23:34I can never pronounce that.
- 23:36Yep.
- 23:37You can even take an old bottle, like a plastic bottle,
- 23:41and put little rocks in it, and then shake it.
- 23:44I mean, just anything.
- 23:45So--
- 23:46That's cool.
- 23:47And then do you have to know anything about drumming?
- 23:51Not at all.
- 23:52Not at all.
- 23:52So the idea of it is that the percussive kind of rhythm
- 24:00helps kind of change your brainway patterns
- 24:03to kind of get you into a more meditative state.
- 24:07And so sitting together and drumming together
- 24:09and kind of feeling that energy, the whole idea behind a new moon
- 24:14is what you want to manifest for that moon cycle.
- 24:17And so as we drum, we think about, OK, what do the last moon
- 24:22cycle look like?
- 24:23What just ended?
- 24:24This is the darker that moon, and this is the time
- 24:26to kind of rest and figure out what you want to manifest.
- 24:30And drumming kind of helps facilitate that.
- 24:32It helps you kind of go a little bit deeper.
- 24:35Then on the full moon circles, we
- 24:37talk about what has manifested.
- 24:40Like this month, it's the hunter moon,
- 24:42or the beaver moon, or whatever.
- 24:44And that's what this is around.
- 24:47And so the whole idea is to kind of live more in cycle
- 24:50with the seasons and with the moon cycle.
- 24:54And you see kind of how your own energy abs
- 24:56and flows with those cycles.
- 24:59And you see kind of how that starts to take root in your own life.
- 25:02That sounds really cool.
- 25:03I'm going to have to get down and check it out.
- 25:05Because I just need-- I need something more in my life,
- 25:09more than just podcasting and working.
- 25:13I need more witchy vibes in my life, for sure.
- 25:15Absolutely.
- 25:16Absolutely.
- 25:17Yeah.
- 25:18OK, can you both recommend like what
- 25:21is one basic witchy tool or something
- 25:26that you provide in the store that you think everyone should
- 25:29have?
- 25:30Good question.
- 25:31I mean, not everyone.
- 25:32But you know what I mean.
- 25:33There's so many.
- 25:34How do you pick one?
- 25:35Right?
- 25:36You can do more than one.
- 25:37I don't care.
- 25:38There's no rules here.
- 25:39I guess I'll talk about the one I've been working on today,
- 25:42since it's like on my mind.
- 25:45We sell-- it's called a witch kit starter kit type thing.
- 25:51Oh, perfect.
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:52So we have three types.
- 25:55One is just in a regular like organ's
- 25:57bag.
- 25:58This month we'll be doing them in little mini like Christmas
- 26:01stockings for Christmas gifts.
- 26:03So two.
- 26:04And then yeah, so that it'll come with a bunch of different herbs,
- 26:09a bunch of different crystals.
- 26:10It comes with like a mini candle, candle holder, matches,
- 26:14oil, Palo Santo, salt.
- 26:19So I think that's most of it.
- 26:22And then we have a style that's inside of a mortar and pestle.
- 26:25So it comes in a mortar and pestle.
- 26:26And then one comes with a little cauldron.
- 26:29So it's just a real like beginner basic kit.
- 26:31And on each of the herbs and the stones,
- 26:34it'll tell you what it is and like one of its metaphysical
- 26:36properties.
- 26:38So it's really for people starting out who don't have a collection
- 26:40of stuff yet and they just want to get something started.
- 26:43So that's perfect.
- 26:45I love that.
- 26:47I would recommend a tarot deck as a good way
- 26:50to kind of start if you're diving into it.
- 26:53Yeah.
- 26:53If you're diving into kind of like your witchy cell
- 26:56because the whole idea behind tarot and divination
- 26:59is to kind of take you a little bit deeper inside yourself.
- 27:02And they have in a fantastic selection of tarot decks there.
- 27:05Everything you can possibly think of.
- 27:08Like they've got a tarot deck for it.
- 27:10I've gotten a few decks there.
- 27:14I got an Oracle deck there and it literally would not
- 27:17let me leave the store without it.
- 27:18I kept--
- 27:19I'd be like, no, I have enough decks.
- 27:22I guess they don't have an Oracle deck,
- 27:23but-- and I kept going back to it and I was like,
- 27:26I have to take this home.
- 27:27They won't let me leave.
- 27:28Nice.
- 27:29That's how you know that.
- 27:30That's meant for you.
- 27:31Yep.
- 27:32Absolutely.
- 27:33I know.
- 27:33And I was really bummed out because I don't have it with me.
- 27:36I think I left it at my co-host house
- 27:39because we used it for the last episode.
- 27:41And I was like, no, I need my--
- 27:43it's a moon Oracle deck.
- 27:44Ooh, nice.
- 27:45It's just gorgeous.
- 27:47But I didn't bring it.
- 27:47So I'd--
- 27:48I probably--
- 27:49I believe.
- 27:50I'd probably have it.
- 27:51I'd like six or seven Oracle decks over there.
- 27:54So chances are I can have it.
- 27:55How do you have it?
- 27:56That would be so cool.
- 27:57Is it the monology Oracle?
- 27:59I don't think so.
- 28:02It has like cartoon witches on it and like cats.
- 28:05Oh, nice.
- 28:07Just very pretty artwork.
- 28:09Like, girly creepy.
- 28:11I wonder if it's the one I picked up recently.
- 28:14Let me go get it.
- 28:15I want to see if it's best one for the first time.
- 28:18I mean, obviously I have all the decks in the store,
- 28:20but in my personal collection, I have this one.
- 28:24That's it.
- 28:26Ooh, nice.
- 28:27I had a feeling that--
- 28:29So it's just my buddy.
- 28:30I take it everywhere with me.
- 28:33And I was just like heartbroken that it wasn't in my bag
- 28:36today.
- 28:36I was like, no.
- 28:37Oh, I'm going to go--
- 28:40Like a piece of me.
- 28:41This is when I snagged for myself.
- 28:43I snagged a lot of them, unfortunately, but--
- 28:46I love it.
- 28:47Yeah, I love the artwork on this one.
- 28:48So gorgeous.
- 28:49It's so beautiful.
- 28:50That's very beautiful.
- 28:53As indie podcasters, we love to show our support
- 28:57of other awesome shows.
- 28:58So stay tuned for the promo we've
- 29:00got to share with you this week.
- 29:02Let's show them some love.
- 29:04You can find their info in our show notes.
- 29:08Good evening and welcome to “Audie's Oddities."
- 29:12Allow me to tell you some stories of true crime, conspiracy,
- 29:16and the unexplained.
- 29:18But most importantly, the names of the lives
- 29:20that we lost in these stories.
- 29:23Nothing's off the chopping block from where wolves
- 29:25when to goes to witches.
- 29:28And most importantly, the most horrifying of them all, people.
- 29:32With news stories twice a week, you'll
- 29:34be sleeping with the lights on.
- 29:36Don't be late, or you might be my next story.
- 29:38Listen to "Audie's Oddities," wherever you get your podcasts.
- 29:41You guys, we're back.
- 29:48And don't worry, we did get more wine.
- 29:51Well, of course.
- 29:54So we usually do a tarot reading or an oracle reading
- 29:57or something witchy in every episode.
- 30:00So if you guys want to pull something,
- 30:03if you're feeling it, I would love that.
- 30:05Since I don't have my pretty deck.
- 30:07Absolutely.
- 30:08So I guess I will pull from the deck that you love.
- 30:13You want to go first, Lucy?
- 30:17Sure.
- 30:18I need to do a Rune pull
- 30:19Is that work?
- 30:21Yes, please.
- 30:22So I made my own Runes out of a Preseli Bluestone.
- 30:28I carved them myself.
- 30:30It took me three months to do it, because I carved them
- 30:34in the proper phase of the moon and all that kind of shit.
- 30:38So I have a set of Runes that I made.
- 30:40And I'll do a Rune pull for you guys.
- 30:44That'll be one.
- 30:45That's so exciting.
- 30:46I give you the five of the day.
- 30:50I have to tell you about a Rune set I saw recently
- 30:53I want to get.
- 30:54Ooh.
- 30:55I think rooms are so beautiful.
- 30:57They really are.
- 30:58This is a Dagaz.
- 31:01It's the room of illumination or enlightenment.
- 31:06So Dagaz, in some parts of Eastern Europe,
- 31:10in Alaska, the sun will set.
- 31:12And it won't rise again for 30, 40, 60 days.
- 31:17So you have just months of darkness.
- 31:20And then the inverse of that is where the sun rises.
- 31:24And it never sets.
- 31:25And it's up for a while.
- 31:27But Dagaz is the illumination.
- 31:29That's the sun rising after an extremely long period
- 31:34of darkness.
- 31:35So if you're moving through a time where you're kind of questioning,
- 31:40what do I do next or where do I go?
- 31:43Dagaz is the room to lean on.
- 31:45It also looks like an hourglass or an infinity symbol.
- 31:49So it kind of encapsulates that idea that there is no beginning
- 31:52and there is no end.
- 31:54It's just-- it's all a cycle, right?
- 31:57It's all illumination.
- 31:58So you keep working and you keep learning.
- 32:01And that's how you keep moving forward
- 32:03is through the illumination of Dagaz.
- 32:08That's so beautiful.
- 32:09I love that.
- 32:10That's perfect.
- 32:13You're turn Courtney.
- 32:15So I got this card - Radiant.
- 32:20Ooh, beautiful.
- 32:21That kind of goes together, I feel like.
- 32:23It does.
- 32:24I know.
- 32:25We're just thinking, I'm going to look it up in the book
- 32:29because it is an Oracle deck.
- 32:31And Oracle's always have their own definitions for things.
- 32:34I love that--
- 32:36Let me see what questions they have for those cards.
- 32:39OK.
- 32:40Yeah.
- 32:41So it says, "Radiant illuminated glowing beacon.
- 32:44Be as radiant as the luminous full moon
- 32:47casting a shimmering glow to all below,
- 32:49blinketing the earth and dancing shadows
- 32:51as the clouds pass around her.
- 32:54Be as radiant as the gleaming suns sending her luminous rays
- 32:57to our planet.
- 32:58Both the moon and the sun are healing,
- 33:00rejuvenating, and magnetic.
- 33:02Soak in these powers, ignite your own glow
- 33:04from within and share your newly gained strength.
- 33:07Recharge your energy zones.
- 33:08Tap into your inspiration and creativity
- 33:11using your newly gained resources to their fullest extent.
- 33:15Choose to shine on your brightest frequency.
- 33:17Be like the sun, the moon, and the stars
- 33:19illuminating the darkness.
- 33:21Wow.
- 33:22And it says, "Intention is illuminate your heart
- 33:25with inspiration and love.
- 33:27Be a beacon of light offering strength and guidance."
- 33:30So yeah.
- 33:31That sounds an awful lot like you guys in your store
- 33:34and what you do for the community.
- 33:36Right.
- 33:36Right.
- 33:37Right.
- 33:38We hope.
- 33:39Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:40That's so perfect.
- 33:41I love when it works out like that,
- 33:43where you get to kind of like matching interpretations
- 33:48for things and they're completely different tools
- 33:52that you're using too.
- 33:53That's really cool.
- 33:54I love that.
- 33:54That's so awesome.
- 33:57Manifesting.
- 33:58We're always so amazed by them.
- 34:00What's that word?
- 34:01Oh my gosh.
- 34:02A synchronicity.
- 34:04Yes.
- 34:05I'm like, one of you has to pull it out of my brain.
- 34:08I know what I mean.
- 34:10Yeah.
- 34:11So have you guys experienced any hauntings, any ghosts,
- 34:15any creepy stuff?
- 34:18Neal.
- 34:19Oh, I mean, we could probably talk about the Ouija
- 34:22I was just saying we could probably
- 34:23talk about the last, the Ouija thing that we did.
- 34:26That was really fascinating.
- 34:28Where--
- 34:29Oh, so did stuff happen.
- 34:30Yeah.
- 34:32You kind of.
- 34:34So I will give some background first, too,
- 34:36because reasons we chose to try to do the Ouija here
- 34:40in the building.
- 34:41So lots of people have told us a story
- 34:44about the lady that owned the store in like the '40s
- 34:49and '50s.
- 34:49Her name was Bessie Brown.
- 34:51And so she was a widow when she bought the building.
- 34:55So that in itself was unique.
- 34:57That she owned and ran this store on her own.
- 35:02She didn't pass away here.
- 35:04But she had-- everybody said that she loved the store.
- 35:07They had to basically force her into retirement.
- 35:11And once they did, she passed away shortly thereafter.
- 35:14So the people have said that they've felt her presence there,
- 35:20that they've seen her.
- 35:21We've had multiple stories from random different people
- 35:24who don't know each other.
- 35:25Oh, wow.
- 35:27The guy that owned the store before us,
- 35:30he talked about her a lot and believed
- 35:32that she was here.
- 35:34And then we've had some younger people come in.
- 35:36He said, oh, I was driving by with somebody's one night.
- 35:39And we saw her out in the road.
- 35:41And like, just various things like that.
- 35:45She was very nice.
- 35:47Everyone says she gave candy out to kids that came
- 35:50in the shop and so on.
- 35:52So yeah, so we kind of did this whole Ouija board thing
- 35:57in the class as well as with friends to reach out
- 36:01and see if she was here and that sort of thing.
- 36:06But yeah, I'll let Lizzy explain the rest of what happened
- 36:11when we did the Ouija board that night.
- 36:14It was really interesting.
- 36:15It was-- we asked if we could connect.
- 36:19And there was definitely the real presence.
- 36:24Our friend, Lisa, the same one that runs the new moon circles.
- 36:29She is an experienced chaman or spirit walker.
- 36:34And does a lot with ghost hunting.
- 36:37She does a lot with cleansing.
- 36:41If you have a malevolent entity on your land,
- 36:43and you need that cleanse.
- 36:45So we felt that we were in really good hands with Lisa.
- 36:49And so she kind of helped guide the process.
- 36:52So she kind of helps make sure that we were all kind of like
- 36:55taking it seriously and things.
- 36:57And so she was asking the right questions.
- 37:00And it definitely had like a very strong sense of a presence
- 37:07and in communicating.
- 37:08What was hilarious is that they asked her if she liked what
- 37:14we did with the store, what Courtney and August did with the store.
- 37:18And it was kind of an ambiguous answer.
- 37:21And we were kind of like, how?
- 37:23Does that mean that you don't like it?
- 37:24But then we got to thinking she ran a grocery store.
- 37:28And Courtney and August store would definitely
- 37:30be the worst grocery store like a round.
- 37:32Like it is a terrible grocery store.
- 37:34So I kind of wonder if she's looking at it
- 37:36and being like, y'all are terrible at selling groceries.
- 37:39Like, this is not the worst grocery store I've ever seen.
- 37:45But they asked, are you here?
- 37:47Are you helping?
- 37:48Do you help people?
- 37:49And she's like, yeah, absolutely.
- 37:51So I think that spirit is still there.
- 37:53And still wanting to be in service as she was for so long
- 37:59in that building.
- 38:00And we definitely get the sense that it's not malevolent at all.
- 38:06It's a very protective and--
- 38:10I don't think kind is necessarily the right word.
- 38:14I think the vibe I got was kind of like stern,
- 38:18but helpful like that kind of school-marm teachery kind
- 38:22of like, you behave now kind of thing.
- 38:26But somebody who's definitely a servant.
- 38:28There was a time too that they were hopeful in the shop
- 38:33as far as we know.
- 38:35So there was somebody in our back corner
- 38:37where the tarot decks and stuff are in the oddities.
- 38:39And a book had fallen off a shelf.
- 38:42Like randomly, nobody could figure out
- 38:44why it would have just fallen off the shelf.
- 38:46And they picked it up and put it back.
- 38:48And it fell again.
- 38:50And then they were like, OK, I'm
- 38:51supposed to buy this book.
- 38:53So it was very interesting that that happened in that way.
- 38:58Because yeah, nobody could figure out.
- 39:00They didn't seem like there was any legitimate reason
- 39:02for the book to have fallen.
- 39:04But sadly, I'm a skeptic about all of the--
- 39:08that stuff I want to believe, like really badly.
- 39:14But I'm still a skeptic there.
- 39:16So we've had few things that were weird.
- 39:21We weren't at home one time.
- 39:22And we have motion sensors, of course,
- 39:25on the alarm system and such.
- 39:27And the motion detectors went off
- 39:29and it turns on the cameras and all this.
- 39:31And we're like, look in.
- 39:32And we didn't see anything that would have turned it on.
- 39:36And it was like a full alarm.
- 39:38Like the alarm company called us and everything.
- 39:40And so we're just like, yeah, no idea.
- 39:43Maybe it was a cat or something.
- 39:46I don't know.
- 39:47So we're always trying to find other explanations.
- 39:52That's healthy, though, I think.
- 39:55I think that's one of the basic tenets of paganism
- 39:59and kind of following a pagan path
- 40:02is listening to your intuition.
- 40:05That's one of the things that--
- 40:07not to get too much of my soapbox,
- 40:08because I could literally be here all day talking about that.
- 40:10Oh, for sure.
- 40:11That's one of the things that Christianity in particular,
- 40:15and a lot of the major world religions,
- 40:18they push is taking you away from that intuition.
- 40:21They teach the tenets that the heart is deceitful above all
- 40:24things.
- 40:24And so you shouldn't listen to your intuition.
- 40:26You should only listen to the priests or the pastors
- 40:29or whatever.
- 40:30And that's one of the things that I love the most
- 40:32about paganism is that it puts you back in your body.
- 40:35And it puts you back in control.
- 40:36And it puts you back in connection
- 40:39with that sense of intuition and that sense of knowing
- 40:44something that even though you may not
- 40:46have a legitimate reason to know, you just know.
- 40:50Like you avoid that guy because he's creepy.
- 40:53And then it turns out he was actually murdering people.
- 40:57Or you turn left instead of right
- 41:00because you have a bad feeling.
- 41:01And it turns out there was a car up later that day or something.
- 41:05Those are the kinds of things that I feel like a pagan path
- 41:08kind of helps you get more in connection with
- 41:11is thinking about things more in a mythological kind of mindset
- 41:14rather than only what you can see touch, taste, feel here.
- 41:19There's a lot more to the world than just what we can see
- 41:24and feel.
- 41:25And I feel like the pagan path has a lot more opportunity
- 41:29to embrace that versus the major world religions and stuff.
- 41:35That's something that I always preach is listen to that,
- 41:38particularly as women.
- 41:40Women's intuition should not be dismissed.
- 41:43And so much of the time it has been that, oh, well,
- 41:46you're just being silly or oh, you shouldn't listen to that.
- 41:48I cannot tell you how many women I have heard say, oh,
- 41:53this is probably silly, but.
- 41:55And then something profound comes out
- 41:57because they're actually listening to their intuition.
- 42:00And that's what I love the most about the pagan path
- 42:03is that you honor that and you lean into that versus just
- 42:07being like, no, I probably shouldn't, I shouldn't
- 42:11pay attention to that.
- 42:12That's silly.
- 42:13Yeah.
- 42:13We're so powerful.
- 42:14Our minds are just--
- 42:16Persons.
- 42:17Our guts.
- 42:18They're on, I think, all the time.
- 42:20Absolutely.
- 42:22Absolutely.
- 42:22So much more fun to look at the world and see the magic in it,
- 42:26too, than to just--
- 42:28Absolutely.
- 42:29It's so--
- 42:29Absolutely.
- 42:30Because I mean, it's not like you could be dull and you
- 42:33could live under a credit score.
- 42:35And you could just pay your bills and go to work and do that
- 42:38shit.
- 42:38Or you could realize that quantum physics
- 42:41is the way that science describes magic.
- 42:45And you could realize that spooky action of the distance
- 42:48is absolutely something that's real.
- 42:50And that the energy that's all around us,
- 42:52you can kind of tap into that.
- 42:54And who doesn't want to live a life full of richness
- 42:57in magic?
- 42:59If you want to be Jess Bezos and Elon Musk and just
- 43:03be a slave to the corporate overlords--
- 43:05Sure.
- 43:06But I want magic.
- 43:08You know, I want unexplained things.
- 43:10And I want spooky action of the distance.
- 43:12I love that.
- 43:13But also the same.
- 43:15You have to have a healthy dose of skepticism.
- 43:17But I can't even talk skepticism.
- 43:20100%.
- 43:21Courtney--
- 43:21otherwise, you just kind of get lost.
- 43:24And you get a little too, like, too be free.
- 43:26Yeah.
- 43:27Courtney and I are in a lot of the same kind of Facebook
- 43:30witch groups and stuff.
- 43:31And there are so many times that people will post stuff
- 43:34and be like, what does this mean?
- 43:35And it's like, sometimes it's just one of the guys that
- 43:39ran it.
- 43:39He posted a clump of cat liver that was in the shape of a heart.
- 43:44And he was like, what do you guys think it means?
- 43:46And he waited for people to be like, oh, maybe a cat.
- 43:49And that was you.
- 43:50Or maybe a cat's trying to tell you something or whatever.
- 43:52And he was like, y'all, sometimes it's just cat pee.
- 43:55Like, sometimes it's literally just like it's just
- 43:57a turd in the shape of a heart.
- 43:59Like, sometimes it doesn't mean anything.
- 44:01Sometimes it's just cat litter.
- 44:03And you got to take it and move on.
- 44:05So there's definitely that balance that you have to live in.
- 44:10Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 44:13Yeah.
- 44:13On the other hand, I say I'm a skeptic.
- 44:16It's mostly about the actual ghost stuff
- 44:19I'm a little bit skeptical about.
- 44:20But I'm trying to see the tiny little moments too
- 44:25that could be considered magical.
- 44:28Like the quarter.
- 44:29Yeah, the quarter.
- 44:31Yeah.
- 44:32Yeah.
- 44:32Yeah.
- 44:33Recently, I wanted to buy a Curio cabinet
- 44:36for my Uranium glass collection.
- 44:38And I've been watching it for like a week
- 44:41because it's really expensive.
- 44:43And I'm like, it's black Friday.
- 44:45Maybe we'll go on sale.
- 44:45Maybe we'll go on sale.
- 44:46And so I've been watching it and watching it.
- 44:48And then like, black Friday came.
- 44:50And I was like, really watching it all day.
- 44:51And I'm like, why aren't they putting it on sale?
- 44:54Yeah, it's like a $1200 or a cabinet.
- 44:56I'm just like, I can't.
- 44:57I just don't want to pay that.
- 44:59And I just kept like him in a hog.
- 45:01And then a customer came in and her husband
- 45:06offered me a Curio cabinet.
- 45:09And they showed me the picture of it.
- 45:11And it looks just like the one I was looking at online.
- 45:13It just wasn't black.
- 45:14I'm like, whatever.
- 45:15I'll paint it.
- 45:16And they're just like, yeah, we're just going to get rid of it
- 45:18so you could have it.
- 45:19And I'm like, are you kidding me?
- 45:21Nice.
- 45:23I love us so perfect.
- 45:24The universe is just like, here you go.
- 45:27Exactly.
- 45:28Love it.
- 45:29Now you got it.
- 45:30You manifested that shit.
- 45:32Absolutely.
- 45:33So yeah, I've been keeping notes of those little moments
- 45:36and stuff in my grammar lately just to try to like see
- 45:39that magic that they have happens.
- 45:42Because you normally like that would happen to anybody.
- 45:45And they'd just be like, oh, of course it ends, you know,
- 45:47but like I'm trying to be like, oh, no, I'm
- 45:49manifested that.
- 45:51I made that happen.
- 45:52Yeah.
- 45:53And being open to it is part of it, too.
- 45:56And like understanding they're like putting that out
- 45:58there and speaking those intentions, it's so powerful.
- 46:01That's why we do that on the moon circles and on the Sabbath.
- 46:04So you actually want to say it and name it and say, this is what
- 46:09I want to call into my life.
- 46:11That's the whole point of those kinds of things.
- 46:14Yeah.
- 46:14And I feel like you can always start small, too.
- 46:18Just something super small, like a cabinet.
- 46:20That was kind of a big thing.
- 46:22But even if it's like, you know, pair of shoes that you want
- 46:25or something, I feel like you can start really small
- 46:27and just see like your potential of what you can get.
- 46:32I manifested a penny once.
- 46:33So did you just really need a penny?
- 46:39It was a Monday and we're closed on Mondays.
- 46:41And my husband's like, he doesn't like to put a zero in the books.
- 46:45So he always like, if we go out shopping, he'll be like looking
- 46:48for change on the ground.
- 46:50He's so right.
- 46:50When I get the grocery store and he's like, we're like in the
- 46:53checkout line or getting close to it.
- 46:55And he's like, I forgot to look for a penny.
- 46:58So I was like, OK, let's go down here.
- 47:00And I kept thinking and thinking he could find a penny.
- 47:02He could find a penny down this aisle.
- 47:04And he turned.
- 47:05And there was a penny on the floor right there in the aisle.
- 47:08And I was like, yes.
- 47:09Oh my god, I love that.
- 47:11Awesome.
- 47:12It's perfect.
- 47:13You just needed one penny.
- 47:14Like, now if I could just do that for a million times.
- 47:18Right?
- 47:19We'd be good.
- 47:20Good to go.
- 47:21I love those stories.
- 47:23Well, is there any last things that we didn't touch on that you
- 47:27want to talk about about literally anything you want?
- 47:31No, thanks.
- 47:32So I didn't talk too much about the good news of Druidry.
- 47:34But we can--
- 47:35Do you want to?
- 47:36We get to joke.
- 47:36Oh.
- 47:37It's a joke.
- 47:37I buy it.
- 47:38You can go into that.
- 47:39It's fine.
- 47:40[LAUGHTER]
- 47:42You should.
- 47:43I want to hear it.
- 47:45I study Druidry.
- 47:46And so every time anybody comes into the store and they're
- 47:51like I'm considering a pagan path, I'm like, have you heard the good news
- 47:55of Druidry?
- 47:56I'm like the unofficial Druid ambassador.
- 48:00So it was plugging everything off.
- 48:03Well, can you tell me--
- 48:04OK, so can you tell us what that means?
- 48:06Because I don't really know what that means.
- 48:09Solaris?
- 48:09Yeah.
- 48:10So Druidry is a nature-based religion.
- 48:14It's kind of like WCA in that.
- 48:17It celebrates the Sabbath and things like that.
- 48:19It's not like WCA in that.
- 48:22WCA has some very laid down dogma intents
- 48:27that you're supposed to follow.
- 48:29How many rules?
- 48:29The rule of three.
- 48:30Yes, exactly.
- 48:32And so Druidry doesn't really have that.
- 48:35You follow the wheel of the year.
- 48:36You follow the season's little paths.
- 48:39It's a very chill religion.
- 48:42And some people actually say that it's not a religion.
- 48:44It's more of a spiritual path.
- 48:45So it kind of depends on your viewpoint of it.
- 48:48It's all about following the seasons, the wheel of the year,
- 48:52living more in tune with nature, understanding
- 48:55how the seasons affect you on an energetic level
- 48:58and on a spiritual level.
- 49:00And kind of just learning what that is.
- 49:03The thing about Druidry is it's what you make it.
- 49:06Some people follow the path of the bard, which
- 49:09is very artistic.
- 49:11So like if you write or you do art or you make music,
- 49:17that's one path.
- 49:18Some people follow the path of the ovate, which
- 49:21is divination, herbalism, working with stones, shadow work,
- 49:27that kind of thing.
- 49:29And then other people will follow the path of the Druid,
- 49:31which is teaching, kind of starting their own grove,
- 49:34and things like that.
- 49:35So there's a lot of different ways that you can be a Druid.
- 49:38Mostly like an argrove, it's completely open.
- 49:42If you want to come, you can come.
- 49:43If you don't want to come, you don't have to.
- 49:45There are no attendance requirements.
- 49:46You don't have to be a member or anything like that.
- 49:50Whenever people say, I love nature,
- 49:52I really experience my spirituality when I'm outside.
- 49:56I'm awed by looking up at the trees
- 49:58or noticing the changing of the season.
- 50:00Yes, I'm like, oh, you're a Druid.
- 50:02OK, cool.
- 50:03Welcome to Druidry.
- 50:05It's pretty much whatever you make it.
- 50:09There's no central dogma of Druidry.
- 50:12There's no holy book.
- 50:14There's no one person to look to that's like, oh,
- 50:17this is the person that started Druidry.
- 50:19And this is the main Druid or whatever.
- 50:22It's all about just kind of living more in tune with yourself
- 50:26and with nature and understanding how those two things
- 50:28interact.
- 50:29So that's the good news about Druidry.
- 50:32Basically, whenever anybody comes into the shop
- 50:35and they're like, I really like nature.
- 50:38I really like growing things.
- 50:39And I think I might be a pagan.
- 50:41I'm like, you're a Druid.
- 50:42Let me tell you more about Druid.
- 50:44Here's this book.
- 50:45You should read it.
- 50:45It's great.
- 50:46Do you have a book recommendation?
- 50:49I have many book recommendations.
- 50:50I have an entire thing.
- 50:53One of the best ones that I like to start with
- 50:55is Principles of Druidry by Emma Restelor.
- 51:00She's a wonderful author.
- 51:02She's very, very sweet, very, very kind.
- 51:06It's a great way to learn about Druidry
- 51:09and kind of experience it as a living, breathing spiritual practice
- 51:15rather than something stuffy to read in a book.
- 51:18Emma Restelor's words really come to life.
- 51:20And she has a beautiful way of introducing that.
- 51:25That I think is fantastic.
- 51:26That would be my recommendation.
- 51:28Now I have a new book to read.
- 51:30Yeah.
- 51:31It's funny because I feel like we're a little bit
- 51:34on opposite sides of the spectrum.
- 51:36But I mean, I love that because that means
- 51:39that we're just covering all sides of the spectrum.
- 51:42Right?
- 51:42We're people.
- 51:43Because my path is very, very different than Lizzie's.
- 51:46Yeah.
- 51:47I'm the tree hugging hippie type.
- 51:50Do you want to talk about your path?
- 51:51Sure.
- 51:52I can.
- 51:53I'm very new to it.
- 51:55So anybody listening for Give Me,
- 51:57if I say something that is not correct,
- 51:59because I'm still learning.
- 52:02And I'm very new.
- 52:02We all are, yeah.
- 52:03Yeah.
- 52:04Right.
- 52:06But it is going to sound weird, but hear me out.
- 52:09So it's called Necromancy or the Necromancer,
- 52:13which it's not the Hollywood version of Necromancy,
- 52:17where you're trying to bring dead things back to life.
- 52:22Right.
- 52:24But basically the way I understand it
- 52:26that I'm learning about is that any kind of working
- 52:29with the dead or death energy,
- 52:32even communicating with the dead,
- 52:34such as all your forms of divination,
- 52:37even the tarot cards can be considered
- 52:40a part of this or scrying just all those various things.
- 52:48So I'm kind of excited because I just
- 52:50started learning about this.
- 52:51And I finally love it.
- 52:52I love it.
- 52:52I have a path that fits me and that goes with.
- 52:57Because I've been doing bone art and taxidermy art
- 53:01for a while.
- 53:02For me, that's a way of just sort of honoring life
- 53:06and keeping the cycle going.
- 53:08You're giving life and beauty to something that is dead and gone.
- 53:13So it's keeping that transformation of that cycle going.
- 53:18So I love that.
- 53:20I love that.
- 53:21I feel like I'm a total mix between the two of you.
- 53:25Because I'm so interested in nature
- 53:28about I'm also so interested in death.
- 53:30But I feel like they totally go together.
- 53:33It's 100%.
- 53:34It's 100%.
- 53:35It's that cycle.
- 53:36Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 53:37I feel like her and I like cover the whole spectrum.
- 53:41I know.
- 53:41And even our clothing choices, you're there all in life.
- 53:44And I'm here in green.
- 53:45That just cracks me up, man.
- 53:47So there's something funny that I--
- 53:49OK, I'll tell you about this because it's funny.
- 53:51So I've kind of wanted a human skull
- 53:54just for my collection for a long time.
- 53:57They are very expensive.
- 53:59Yes.
- 53:59I'm always telling people, if you murder somebody,
- 54:02do not let that go to waste.
- 54:04So--
- 54:04Right.
- 54:05And then do you promise?
- 54:07Do you promise?
- 54:07We got that right.
- 54:08We got you.
- 54:09But recently, I don't know why it never occurred to me
- 54:13that the human body has lots of other bones, obviously.
- 54:17I mean, the skull is the coolest part.
- 54:18And the most important.
- 54:21But so I'm studying this stuff that I'm reading this book
- 54:26called "The Bones Fall in a Spiral"
- 54:28by Mortellis.
- 54:31And so there's a thing in there where
- 54:33you make what's called a skeleton key.
- 54:36And it's to help you transverse different worlds,
- 54:40like the underworld and the liminal spaces and things like that.
- 54:43And she suggests getting a--
- 54:46what does she call-- a metacarpal bone for this.
- 54:50And I first thought that was a finger.
- 54:52It's not a finger.
- 54:53It's like this bone in your hand.
- 54:55No.
- 54:56OK.
- 54:57And you carve a sigil on it and do some stuff.
- 54:59And I was like, school, but I want a finger bone.
- 55:03Because it's like, oh, wide.
- 55:06Great.
- 55:07And it never occurred to me in the past
- 55:09that I could just buy a finger bone.
- 55:11So I got a finger and I bought a carpal,
- 55:14and I'm going to put them together.
- 55:15And then of course, I'm going to rhinestone them
- 55:17because I love things to be sparkly because they should.
- 55:20And then I'm just going to carry it around.
- 55:22And whenever I have to point at something,
- 55:25I'm just going to pull it out and use it to point at things.
- 55:29Oh my goodness.
- 55:29I love it.
- 55:30That's amazing.
- 55:31That's amazing.
- 55:33You should make like a little string so it can kind of move
- 55:36a little bit.
- 55:37Yes.
- 55:38So you can be like, come here.
- 55:39Come here.
- 55:39Somebody told me I should turn it into like a stylus.
- 55:42So I could be on my phone like with my finger bone.
- 55:45Yes.
- 55:46Yes.
- 55:48That would be incredible.
- 55:49So many things you can do.
- 55:51I love it.
- 55:52So many fun things you can do with bones.
- 55:55So yeah.
- 55:55So if anyone's listening, just know that I'm very weird,
- 55:59and you cannot necessarily be weirder.
- 56:02So if you feel like you are--
- 56:04True.
- 56:04Yeah.
- 56:05I feel like they're pretty used to it around me.
- 56:07I'm just so weird.
- 56:11Letting out the whole point of a community like this
- 56:14is that you can come as you are.
- 56:15And you don't have to worry.
- 56:17Nobody's going to give you the side eye and be like,
- 56:18wow, that weird person over there.
- 56:20Your farmer likely to get the side eye
- 56:22if you show up in like a 3-piece suit
- 56:24and you're like super stuffy normal.
- 56:26Like we're going to be like, fuck you around with that guy.
- 56:28Yeah, exactly.
- 56:29What's the normie doing here?
- 56:31What's up with that?
- 56:33You have tourists in the building.
- 56:35Yeah, exactly.
- 56:36A tourist.
- 56:37Exactly.
- 56:38Have you heard the news of Drew and Drew?
- 56:40Have you heard the news of Necro-Mancy?
- 56:42Come sit with us.
- 56:43We will tell you.
- 56:45Do you ever have people who just--
- 56:48I mean, it's probably dumb question--
- 56:50but who just wander into the shop and not
- 56:53know what it is?
- 56:54Oh, yeah.
- 56:55Like every day, every day.
- 56:57Really?
- 56:58Well, because the street that we're
- 57:01is kind of like between a park and all the Oranco
- 57:05apartment buildings.
- 57:07So we get people who are going to the park, walk in their dog,
- 57:10that sort of thing.
- 57:11So yeah, all the time, especially in October,
- 57:14we've had people coming in looking for costumes.
- 57:17Yeah, because they think we're a Halloween shop.
- 57:21Or-- and I've gotten a lot better to just flat out be like,
- 57:26no, this is a witch store.
- 57:28Yeah.
- 57:29I think that if you're just opening up front,
- 57:33it kind of dismisses any possible negativity
- 57:36right off the bat.
- 57:39So now that we get any, we really don't, but just in case.
- 57:43But yeah, most people are just like, oh, OK.
- 57:46They wander around.
- 57:47They can appreciate that it's pretty.
- 57:49The building is nice.
- 57:50It's old.
- 57:50We did a good job making it up.
- 57:54But--
- 57:55You did.
- 57:56So they will be like, oh, yeah, this isn't for me.
- 57:58But I love what you did with the place.
- 58:02Oh, yeah.
- 58:04That is so interesting to me, because I
- 58:05thought for sure you'd be like, no, because the outside
- 58:08of the building is--
- 58:10it's kind of obvious what the place is.
- 58:14But I guess during Halloween, they could just think, oh,
- 58:17it's just decorated around.
- 58:18For sure.
- 58:19Right.
- 58:21It's like a spirit Halloween outpost thing.
- 58:24We just opened it up for one month a year.
- 58:27That was a lot of work.
- 58:29Exactly.
- 58:29Oh, my God.
- 58:30Seriously, yeah.
- 58:32I did tell August though.
- 58:34So we opened up October 1st last year.
- 58:38So we didn't have a lot of time to decorate for Halloween
- 58:40last year.
- 58:41So this year, we got a whole bunch of stuff.
- 58:43And I spent an entire month making Halloween decor and stuff
- 58:47and putting it up.
- 58:50And we spent quite a bit on it to his chagrin, of course.
- 58:53But I'm like, you know?
- 58:56And I'm like, you feel like this stuff for years.
- 58:59I didn't really tell him that I plan on doing this every year
- 59:03so that our collection grows.
- 59:06Because I'm like, one day, we'll want to retire.
- 59:09And that's when we can just set up the backyard
- 59:11hot and people come through.
- 59:13And we only have to work one month a year.
- 59:16Exactly.
- 59:17Because that's perfect.
- 59:19Long term goals, you know?
- 59:21Right.
- 59:22Yeah.
- 59:23You see the big picture.
- 59:24He wants to like--
- 59:25Yeah, right.
- 59:26He wants to like retire to some like Norwegian country
- 59:30that's freezing.
- 59:31I don't know.
- 59:32They don't even have Halloween over there.
- 59:34No, you can say you're with me.
- 59:36Can you live there like one month a year?
- 59:39Right.
- 59:39And retire there one month a year, exactly.
- 59:42Right.
- 59:42So you got married at the Witches Castle.
- 59:46Or did you just take pictures there?
- 59:49No, we actually got married there.
- 59:51Yeah.
- 59:52I think I was stalking your website.
- 59:53And I was like, no way.
- 59:56Because we did a story on that place.
- 59:58It's haunted.
- 59:59Oh, nice.
- 1:00:00Yeah.
- 1:00:00Awesome.
- 1:00:01Yeah.
- 1:00:02It was a little bit different than we expected.
- 1:00:05I think it's got a lot of graffiti on it now.
- 1:00:08Did one of the pictures online showed.
- 1:00:09But yeah, it was still a beautiful place.
- 1:00:12We did the whole--
- 1:00:15we did a hand-fasting.
- 1:00:16We were eloping.
- 1:00:17We had just moved here.
- 1:00:18So we didn't know anybody.
- 1:00:20We literally had to pay the person who did the ceremony extra
- 1:00:25to bring somebody to take pictures
- 1:00:27and some people to be witnesses.
- 1:00:29Because we didn't even have witnesses.
- 1:00:33So yeah, so we did a whole circle on the ground.
- 1:00:38We had her call in, the four directions,
- 1:00:41and the ancestors, and all that.
- 1:00:43I had it all set up there.
- 1:00:45Yeah, we did the whole nine yards.
- 1:00:47We did the jumping over the broom afterwards.
- 1:00:50One of her family members was there
- 1:00:51who kind of kept people out at least.
- 1:00:54Because it's a kind of a tourist attraction.
- 1:00:56Yeah, it's like a hiking trail, too.
- 1:00:58Yeah.
- 1:00:58Yeah.
- 1:00:59So we did go earlier in the day.
- 1:01:01But we had quite a few people just stop and watch.
- 1:01:04And like--
- 1:01:04I would.
- 1:01:05That'd be so interesting.
- 1:01:07So she at least kept them from coming
- 1:01:09into the castle where we were doing our thing.
- 1:01:13So that's so cool.
- 1:01:14This is good.
- 1:01:15Yeah.
- 1:01:16What did you call it?
- 1:01:17Hand-fasting.
- 1:01:18That's just the type of ceremony that we do.
- 1:01:21You hold hands and the officiant puts cords over your hand.
- 1:01:27We had different colors that represented different things,
- 1:01:31like gray for getting old together or stuff like that.
- 1:01:35And so she would read through all those as she put the cord,
- 1:01:38and then she tied it into a knot.
- 1:01:39And that's like symbolizing the marriage part of it.
- 1:01:43And we held our rings in our hands, too, under the knot,
- 1:01:47and that's the thing.
- 1:01:48So yeah.
- 1:01:49Oh, that's so cool.
- 1:01:50I've never seen a wedding like that before.
- 1:01:52I would love to see something like that.
- 1:01:55I don't want to get married.
- 1:01:56But I want to witness it.
- 1:01:59It seems we're going to be doing some here at the shop.
- 1:02:02Oh, wow, really?
- 1:02:04Yeah.
- 1:02:05There's people who have asked--
- 1:02:07Yeah.
- 1:02:07--and we see those.
- 1:02:08How do you officiate?
- 1:02:11Yes, I am ordained.
- 1:02:12I can do handfastings, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:02:15So if you want to get married at the shop or in the backyard
- 1:02:18or something like that, I can absolutely officiate them.
- 1:02:22We did have a couple get married in our backyard
- 1:02:26a while, like last year or something.
- 1:02:27Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:28Because they needed witnesses, too.
- 1:02:30And so we'll be your witnesses if you need witnesses.
- 1:02:34We know what it's like to not have any package deal.
- 1:02:38Toast.
- 1:02:39Well, thank you guys so much for talking with me.
- 1:02:41This was so much fun.
- 1:02:43Great.
- 1:02:43Thank you.
- 1:02:44I'll have to come to one of the moon ceremonies
- 1:02:47because that just sounds like a blast.
- 1:02:49Absolutely.
- 1:02:50We have one coming up.
- 1:02:52Yes.
- 1:02:52Yeah.
- 1:02:53Ooh, win.
- 1:02:53Let's see.
- 1:02:54Full moon.
- 1:02:55Tuesday, I think.
- 1:02:57Yep.
- 1:02:57Tuesday at 7.30.
- 1:02:59Oh my gosh.
- 1:02:59I have Tuesdays off.
- 1:03:01It's like it's meant to be.
- 1:03:02OK, I'm going to do that.
- 1:03:03There you go.
- 1:03:04Let's take it like deathly ill or something.
- 1:03:06But come by.
- 1:03:07Come by.
- 1:03:09Yes.
- 1:03:10And we have it all decorated up for Krampmas right now.
- 1:03:12Oh, yes.
- 1:03:14I love that.
- 1:03:16I feel like we get more people who like the Krampmas
- 1:03:20than the cared about how--
- 1:03:22Really?
- 1:03:23Ironically.
- 1:03:25Yeah.
- 1:03:26Yeah.
- 1:03:27I like both.
- 1:03:28They're just not used to seeing spooky stuff at Christmas.
- 1:03:30Yeah.
- 1:03:31That makes sense.
- 1:03:32Besides your family shit, that's always very spooky, right?
- 1:03:34We definitely put some fanat hats and elf hats on the skeletons
- 1:03:38because it was too much fun.
- 1:03:40You should take down.
- 1:03:41That works.
- 1:03:43Great.
- 1:03:44Exactly.
- 1:03:45Awesome.
- 1:03:46Well, thank you so much.
- 1:03:48Yeah.
- 1:03:49And have a great rest of your weekend.
- 1:03:52And I hope I will see you Tuesday.
- 1:03:54Yes.
- 1:03:55Have a great day.
- 1:03:56Have a great day.

- 1:07:39I just manifested the shit out of that.
- 1:07:41I swear, I have a response.
- 1:07:42It's just slightly stuck behind a bubble.
