- 0:00Speaker 1: Alma, chapters twenty one through twenty four. Alma Chapter twenty one. Now,
- 0:06Speaker 1: when Ammon and his brethren separated themselves on the borders
- 0:09Speaker 1: of the land of the Lamanites, behold Erin took his
- 0:11Speaker 1: journey towards the land which was called by the Lamanites Jerusalem,
- 0:15Speaker 1: calling it after the land of their father's nativity. And
- 0:19Speaker 1: it was away joining the borders of Mormon. Now the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Lamanites and the Amalekites and the people of Amulan had
- 0:25Speaker 1: built a great city which was called Jerusalem. Now the
- 0:29Speaker 1: Lamanites of themselves were sufficiently hardened, but the Amalekites and
- 0:33Speaker 1: the Amulnites were still harder. Therefore they had cause the
- 0:37Speaker 1: Lamanites that they should harden their hearts, that they should
- 0:40Speaker 1: wax strong in wickedness and their abominations. And it came
- 0:44Speaker 1: to pass that Erin came to the city of Jerusalem
- 0:46Speaker 1: and first began to preach to the Amalekites. And he
- 0:49Speaker 1: began to preach to them in their synagogues, for they
- 0:52Speaker 1: had built synagogues after the order of the Nihores. For
- 0:55Speaker 1: many of the Amalekites and the Amulanites were after the
- 0:57Speaker 1: order of the Nihores. Therefore, as Erin entered into one
- 1:01Speaker 1: of their synagogues to preach unto the people, and as
- 1:04Speaker 1: he was speaking unto them, behold their arose and a
- 1:06Speaker 1: melakite and began to contend with him, saying, what is
- 1:10Speaker 1: that thou hast testified? Hast thou seen an angel? Why
- 1:15Speaker 1: do not angels appear unto us? And behold? Are not
- 1:18Speaker 1: this people as good as thy people? Thou also sayest,
- 1:21Speaker 1: except we repent, we shall perish. How knowest thou the
- 1:25Speaker 1: thoughts and intents of our hearts? How knowest thou that
- 1:28Speaker 1: we have cause to repent? How knowest thou that we
- 1:31Speaker 1: are not a righteous people? Behold, we have built sanctuaries,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and we do assemble ourselves together to worship God. We
- 1:38Speaker 1: do believe that God will save all men. Now Erin
- 1:41Speaker 1: said unto him, believest thou that the Son of God
- 1:44Speaker 1: shall come to redeem mankind from their sins. And the
- 1:48Speaker 1: man said, unto him, we do not believe that thou
- 1:51Speaker 1: knowest any such thing. We do not believe in these
- 1:53Speaker 1: foolish traditions. We do not believe that thou knowest of
- 1:57Speaker 1: things to come. Neither do we believe that thy fathers,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and also that our fathers did not concerning the things
- 2:03Speaker 1: which they spake of that which is to come. Now
- 2:06Speaker 1: erin began to open the scriptures unto them concerning the
- 2:09Speaker 1: coming of Christ, and also concerning the resurrection of the dead,
- 2:13Speaker 1: and that there could be no redemption for mankind save
- 2:16Speaker 1: it were through the death and sufferings of Christ and
- 2:19Speaker 1: the atonement of His blood. And it came to pass
- 2:22Speaker 1: as he began to expound these things unto them, they
- 2:24Speaker 1: were angry with him and began to mock him, and
- 2:27Speaker 1: they would not hear the words which he spake. Therefore,
- 2:30Speaker 1: when he saw that they would not hear his words,
- 2:32Speaker 1: he departed out of their synagogue and came over to
- 2:35Speaker 1: a village which was called Daniante, And there he found
- 2:38Speaker 1: Milakai preaching the Word unto them, and also Amma and
- 2:41Speaker 1: his brethren. And they contended with many about the Word,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and it came to pass that they saw that the
- 2:46Speaker 1: people would harden their hearts. Therefore they departed and came
- 2:49Speaker 1: over into the land of Madona, and they did preach
- 2:52Speaker 1: the word unto many, and few believed on the words
- 2:55Speaker 1: which they taught. Nevertheless, Arin and a certain number of
- 2:59Speaker 1: his brethren taken and cast into prison, and the remainder
- 3:03Speaker 1: of them fled out of the land of Medona unto
- 3:05Speaker 1: the regions roundabout. And those who were cast into prison
- 3:09Speaker 1: suffered many things, and they were delivered by the hand
- 3:12Speaker 1: of Lamona and Amon, and they were fed and clothed,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and they went forth again to declare the Word. And
- 3:19Speaker 1: thus they were delivered for the first time out of prison.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And thus they had suffered. And they went forth whithersoever.
- 3:25Speaker 1: They were led by the spirit of the Lord, preaching
- 3:28Speaker 1: the Word of God in every synagogue of the Amalekites,
- 3:31Speaker 1: or in every assembly of the Lamanites, where they could
- 3:34Speaker 1: be admitted. And it came to pass that the Lord
- 3:37Speaker 1: began to bless them insomuch that they brought many to
- 3:39Speaker 1: the knowledge of the truth. Yea, they did convinced many
- 3:42Speaker 1: of their sins and of the traditions of their fathers,
- 3:45Speaker 1: which were not correct. And it came to pass that
- 3:48Speaker 1: Amon and Lamona returned from the land of Medona to
- 3:50Speaker 1: the land of Ishmael, which was the land of their inheritance.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And King Lammonae would not suffer that Amon should serve
- 3:57Speaker 1: him or be his servant, but he caused that there
- 4:00Speaker 1: should be synagogues built in the land of Ishmael. And
- 4:04Speaker 1: he caused that his people, or the people who were
- 4:06Speaker 1: under his reign, should assemble themselves together. And he did
- 4:10Speaker 1: rejoice over them, and he did teach them many things.
- 4:14Speaker 1: And he did also declare unto them that they were
- 4:16Speaker 1: a people who were under him, and that they were
- 4:19Speaker 1: a free people, that they were free from the oppressions
- 4:22Speaker 1: of the king his father, for that his father had
- 4:25Speaker 1: granted unto him that he might reign over the people
- 4:27Speaker 1: who were in the land of Ishmael and in all
- 4:29Speaker 1: the land round about. And he also declared unto them
- 4:33Speaker 1: that they might have the liberty of worshiping the Lord
- 4:35Speaker 1: their God, according to their desires, in whatsoever place they
- 4:38Speaker 1: were in, if it were in the land which was
- 4:41Speaker 1: under the reign of King Lamonae. And Ammon did preach
- 4:44Speaker 1: unto the people of King Lamonae. And it came to
- 4:47Speaker 1: pass that he did teach them all things concerning things
- 4:50Speaker 1: pertaining to righteousness, and he did exhort them daily with
- 4:53Speaker 1: all diligence, and they gave heed unto his word, and
- 4:56Speaker 1: they were zealous for keeping the commandments of God. Almah
- 5:01Speaker 1: chapter twenty two. Now, as Ammon was thus teaching the
- 5:05Speaker 1: people of Lamona continually, we will return to the account
- 5:08Speaker 1: of Erin and his brethren. For after he returned from
- 5:12Speaker 1: the land of Madona, he was led by the spirit
- 5:15Speaker 1: to the land of Nephi, even to the house of
- 5:17Speaker 1: the King, which was over all the land save it
- 5:20Speaker 1: were the land of Ishmael, and he was the father
- 5:22Speaker 1: of Lamonae. And it came to pass that he went
- 5:26Speaker 1: in unto him into the king's palace with his brethren,
- 5:29Speaker 1: and bowed himself before the king and said unto him, behold,
- 5:33Speaker 1: O King, we are the brethren of Amine, whom thou
- 5:36Speaker 1: hast delivered out of prison. And now, O King, if
- 5:39Speaker 1: thou wilt spare our lives, we will be thy servants.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And the King said unto them, arise, for I will
- 5:46Speaker 1: grant unto you your lives, and I will not suffer
- 5:49Speaker 1: that ye shall be my servants. But I will insist
- 5:52Speaker 1: that ye shall administer unto me. For I have been
- 5:54Speaker 1: somewhat troubled in mind because of the generosity and the
- 5:57Speaker 1: greatness of the words of thy brother Ammon, and I
- 6:00Speaker 1: desire to know the cause why he has not come
- 6:02Speaker 1: up out of Medonna with thee. And Erin said, unto
- 6:05Speaker 1: the King, behold, the Spirit of the Lord has called
- 6:09Speaker 1: him another way. He has gone to the land of
- 6:12Speaker 1: Ishmael to teach the people of Lamonai. Now the King
- 6:15Speaker 1: said unto them, what is this that ye have said
- 6:18Speaker 1: concerning the spirit of the Lord. Behold, this is the
- 6:21Speaker 1: thing which doth trouble me. And also what is this
- 6:24Speaker 1: that Ammon said? If ye will repent, ye shall be saved.
- 6:28Speaker 1: And if ye will not repent, ye shall be cast
- 6:31Speaker 1: off at the last day. And Erin answered him and said,
- 6:35Speaker 1: unto him, believest thou that there is a God. And
- 6:40Speaker 1: the King said, I know that the Amalekites say that
- 6:43Speaker 1: there is a God. And I have granted unto them
- 6:45Speaker 1: that they should build sanctuaries, that they may assemble themselves
- 6:48Speaker 1: together to worship him. And if now thou sayest there
- 6:52Speaker 1: is a God, behold, I will believe. And now when
- 6:56Speaker 1: Erin heard this, his heart began to rejoice, and he said, behold, assuredly,
- 7:02Speaker 1: as thou livest o King, there is a God. And
- 7:05Speaker 1: the King said, is God that great spirit that brought
- 7:09Speaker 1: our fathers out of the land of Jerusalem. And Erin
- 7:13Speaker 1: said unto him, yea, he is that great Spirit, and
- 7:17Speaker 1: he created all things, both in heaven and in earth.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Believest thou this? And he said, YEA, I believe that
- 7:26Speaker 1: the Great Spirit created all things. And I desire that
- 7:30Speaker 1: ye should tell me concerning all these things, and I
- 7:33Speaker 1: will believe thy words. And it came to pass that
- 7:37Speaker 1: when Erin saw that the King would believe his words,
- 7:39Speaker 1: he began from the creation of Adam reading the scriptures
- 7:43Speaker 1: unto the king, how God created man after his own image,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and that God gave him commandments, and that because of
- 7:50Speaker 1: transgression man had fallen. And Erin had expound unto him
- 7:55Speaker 1: the scriptures from the creation of Adam lay in the
- 7:58Speaker 1: fall of man before him and their carnal state, and
- 8:01Speaker 1: also the plan of redemption which was prepared from the
- 8:04Speaker 1: foundation of the world through Christ, for all whosoever would
- 8:07Speaker 1: believe on his name. And since man had a fallen,
- 8:11Speaker 1: he could not merit anything of himself but the sufferings
- 8:15Speaker 1: and death of Christ atone for their sins through faith
- 8:18Speaker 1: and repentance, and so forth, and that he breaketh the
- 8:22Speaker 1: bands of death, that the grave shall have no victory,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and that the sting of death should be swallowed up
- 8:28Speaker 1: in the hopes of glory. And Erin did expound all
- 8:31Speaker 1: these things unto the King. And it came to pass
- 8:35Speaker 1: that after Erin had expounded these things unto him, the
- 8:38Speaker 1: King said, what shall I do that I may have
- 8:41Speaker 1: this eternal life of which thou hast spoken? Yea, What
- 8:45Speaker 1: shall I do that I may be born of God,
- 8:48Speaker 1: having this wicked spirit rooted out of my breast, and
- 8:51Speaker 1: receive His spirit, that I may be filled with joy,
- 8:55Speaker 1: that I may not be cast off at the last day? Behold,
- 8:59Speaker 1: said he, I will give up all that I possess. Yea,
- 9:03Speaker 1: I will forsake my kingdom that I may receive this
- 9:07Speaker 1: great joy. But Erin said unto him, if thou desirest
- 9:12Speaker 1: this thing, if thou wilt bow down before God, yea,
- 9:16Speaker 1: If thou wilt repent of all thy sins and wilt
- 9:19Speaker 1: bow down before God and call on his name in faith,
- 9:23Speaker 1: believing that ye shall receive, then shalt thou receive the
- 9:26Speaker 1: hope which thou desirest. And it came to pass that
- 9:30Speaker 1: when Erin had said these words, the king did bow
- 9:33Speaker 1: down before the Lord upon his knees. Yea. Even he
- 9:36Speaker 1: did prostrate himself upon the earth and cried mightily, saying,
- 9:41Speaker 1: O God, Erin hath told me that there is a God.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And if there is a God, and if thou art God,
- 9:48Speaker 1: wilt thou make thyself known unto me? And I will
- 9:52Speaker 1: give away all my sins to know THEE, and that
- 9:56Speaker 1: I may be raised from the dead and be saved
- 9:59Speaker 1: the last day. And now when the king had said
- 10:02Speaker 1: these words, he was struck as if he were dead.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And it came to pass that his servants ran and
- 10:09Speaker 1: told the queen all that had happened unto the king.
- 10:12Speaker 1: And she came in unto the king. And when she
- 10:14Speaker 1: saw him lay as if he were dead, and also
- 10:17Speaker 1: Erin and his brethren, standing as though they had been
- 10:19Speaker 1: the cause of his fall, she was angry with them
- 10:22Speaker 1: and commanded that her servants, or the servants of the king,
- 10:25Speaker 1: should take them and slay them. Now the servants had
- 10:28Speaker 1: seen the cause of the king's fall. Therefore they durst
- 10:31Speaker 1: not lay their hands on Erin and his brethren. And
- 10:35Speaker 1: I pled with the queen, saying, why commandest thou that
- 10:38Speaker 1: we should slay these men, when behold, one of them
- 10:41Speaker 1: is mightier than us all. And therefore we shall fall
- 10:44Speaker 1: before them. Now, when the Queen saw the fear of
- 10:47Speaker 1: the servants, she also began to fear exceedingly, lest there
- 10:50Speaker 1: should some evil come upon her. And she commanded her
- 10:54Speaker 1: servants that they should go and call the people, that
- 10:57Speaker 1: they might slay Erin and his brethren. Now, when Erin
- 11:00Speaker 1: saw the determination of the Queen, he also, knowing the
- 11:04Speaker 1: hardness of the hearts of the people, feared lest that
- 11:07Speaker 1: a multitude should assemble themselves together and there should be
- 11:11Speaker 1: a great contention and disturbance among them. Therefore he put
- 11:15Speaker 1: forth his hand and raised the king from the earth,
- 11:17Speaker 1: and said unto him, stand, and he stood upon his feet,
- 11:22Speaker 1: receiving his strength. Now this was done in the presence
- 11:26Speaker 1: of the Queen and many of the servants, And when
- 11:28Speaker 1: they saw it, they greatly marveled and began to fear.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And the King stood forth and began to minister unto them,
- 11:35Speaker 1: and heated minister unto them, insomuch that his whole household
- 11:39Speaker 1: were converted unto the Lord. Now there was a multitude
- 11:43Speaker 1: gathered together because of the commandment of the queen, and
- 11:46Speaker 1: there began to be great murmurings among them. Because of
- 11:49Speaker 1: Erin and his brethren. But the king stood forth among
- 11:53Speaker 1: them and administered unto them, and they were pacified towards Erin,
- 11:57Speaker 1: and those who were with him. Came to pass that
- 12:00Speaker 1: when the king saw that the people were pacified, he
- 12:03Speaker 1: caused that Arin and his brethren should stand forth in
- 12:06Speaker 1: the midst of the multitude, and that they should preach
- 12:08Speaker 1: the word unto them. And it came to pass that
- 12:11Speaker 1: the king sent a proclamation throughout all the land, amongst
- 12:15Speaker 1: all his people, who were in all his land, who
- 12:17Speaker 1: were in all the regions round about which was bordering
- 12:21Speaker 1: even to the sea on the east and on the west,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and which was divided from the land of Zarahemla by
- 12:27Speaker 1: a narrow strip of wilderness which ran from the sea
- 12:29Speaker 1: east even to the sea west, and round about on
- 12:32Speaker 1: the borders of the sea shore, and the borders of
- 12:34Speaker 1: the wilderness which was on the north by the land
- 12:36Speaker 1: of Zarahemla, through the borders of Mantai, by the head
- 12:39Speaker 1: of the river Sidon, running from the east towards the west.
- 12:44Speaker 1: And thus were the Lamanites and the Nephites divided. Now
- 12:48Speaker 1: the more idle part of the Lamanites lived in the
- 12:50Speaker 1: wilderness and dwelt in tents, and they were spread through
- 12:54Speaker 1: the wilderness on the west in the land of nephi Yea,
- 12:57Speaker 1: and also on the west of the land of Zarahemla,
- 13:00Speaker 1: in the borders by the sea shore, and on the
- 13:02Speaker 1: west in the land of nephi in the place of
- 13:04Speaker 1: their father's first inheritance, and thus bordering along by the
- 13:08Speaker 1: sea shore. And also there were many Lamanites on the
- 13:12Speaker 1: east by the sea shore, whether the Nephites had driven them,
- 13:15Speaker 1: and thus the Nephites were nearly surrounded by the Lamanites. Nevertheless,
- 13:19Speaker 1: the Nephites had taken possession of all the northern parts
- 13:23Speaker 1: of the land, bordering on the wilderness at the head
- 13:25Speaker 1: of the river Sidon from the east to the west,
- 13:28Speaker 1: round about on the wilderness side on the north, even
- 13:31Speaker 1: until they came to the land which they called bountiful,
- 13:35Speaker 1: and it bordered upon the land which they called desolation,
- 13:39Speaker 1: it being so far northward that it came into the
- 13:42Speaker 1: land which had been peopled and been destroyed, of whose
- 13:46Speaker 1: bones we have spoken, which was discovered by the people
- 13:49Speaker 1: of Zarahemla, it being the place of their first landing,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and they came from there up into the south wilderness.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Thus the land on the northward was called the desolate,
- 14:00Speaker 1: and the land on the southward was called bountiful, yet
- 14:04Speaker 1: being the wilderness which is filled with all manner of
- 14:06Speaker 1: wild animals of every kind, a part of which had
- 14:09Speaker 1: come from the land northward for food. And now it
- 14:13Speaker 1: was only the distance of a day and a half's
- 14:15Speaker 1: journey for a Nephyte on the line Bountiful in the
- 14:18Speaker 1: land Desolation, from the east to the west sea. And
- 14:22Speaker 1: thus the land of Nephi and the land of Zarahemla
- 14:24Speaker 1: were nearly surrounded by water, there being a small neck
- 14:28Speaker 1: of land between the land northward and the land southward.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the Nephites had inhabited
- 14:34Speaker 1: the land Bountiful even from the east unto the west sea.
- 14:39Speaker 1: And thus the Nephites and their wisdom, with their guards
- 14:42Speaker 1: and their armies, had hemmed in the Lamanites on the south,
- 14:45Speaker 1: that thereby they should have no more possession on the north,
- 14:49Speaker 1: that they might not overrun the land northward. Therefore the
- 14:52Speaker 1: Lamanites could have no more possessions only in the land
- 14:55Speaker 1: of Nephi and the wilderness round about. Now this was
- 14:59Speaker 1: wisdom in the nephi Es, as the Lamanites were an
- 15:01Speaker 1: enemy to them, they would not suffer their afflictions on
- 15:04Speaker 1: every hand, and also that they might have a country,
- 15:06Speaker 1: whether they might flee according to their desires. And now I,
- 15:10Speaker 1: after having said this, return again to the account of
- 15:13Speaker 1: Amin and Arin, Omni and Hymni and their brethren Alma
- 15:21Speaker 1: chapter twenty three. Behold, now it came to pass that
- 15:26Speaker 1: the King of the Lamanite sent proclamation among all his
- 15:28Speaker 1: people that they should not lay their hands on Amin
- 15:32Speaker 1: or Arin, or Omnor or Hymni, nor either of their brethren,
- 15:36Speaker 1: who should go forth preaching the word of God in
- 15:38Speaker 1: whatsoever place they should be in any part of their land. Yea,
- 15:42Speaker 1: he sent a decree among them that they should not
- 15:44Speaker 1: lay their hands on them, to bind them, or to
- 15:46Speaker 1: cast them into prison. Neither should they spit upon them,
- 15:49Speaker 1: nor smite them, nor cast them out of their synagogues,
- 15:52Speaker 1: nor scourge them. Neither should they cast stones at them.
- 15:55Speaker 1: But that they should have free access to their houses,
- 15:58Speaker 1: and also their temples and their sayings ctuaries. And thus
- 16:01Speaker 1: they might go forth and preach the Word according to
- 16:04Speaker 1: their desires. For the king had been converted unto the
- 16:07Speaker 1: Lord and all his household. Therefore he sent his proclamation
- 16:11Speaker 1: throughout the land unto his people, that the word of
- 16:13Speaker 1: God might have no obstruction, but that it might go
- 16:17Speaker 1: forth throughout all the land, that his people might be
- 16:20Speaker 1: convinced concerning the wicked traditions of their fathers, and that
- 16:24Speaker 1: they might be convinced that they were all brethren, and
- 16:27Speaker 1: that they ought not to murder, nor to blunder, nor
- 16:30Speaker 1: to steal, nor to commit adultery, nor to commit any
- 16:33Speaker 1: manner of wickedness. And now it came to pass that
- 16:37Speaker 1: when the King had sent forth this proclamation, that Arin
- 16:40Speaker 1: and his brethren went forth from city to city, and
- 16:42Speaker 1: from one house of worship to another, establishing churches and
- 16:46Speaker 1: consecrating priests and teachers throughout the land among the Lamanites
- 16:50Speaker 1: to preach and to teach the word of God among them.
- 16:53Speaker 1: And thus they began to have great success, and thousands
- 16:56Speaker 1: were brought to the knowledge of the Lord Yea. Thousands
- 16:59Speaker 1: were brought to believe in the traditions of the Nephites,
- 17:02Speaker 1: and they were taught the records and prophecies which were
- 17:05Speaker 1: handed down even to the present time. And as sure
- 17:08Speaker 1: as the Lord liveth so sure as many as believed,
- 17:12Speaker 1: or as many as were brought to the knowledge of
- 17:13Speaker 1: the truth through the preaching of Amine and his brethren,
- 17:16Speaker 1: according to the spirit of revelation and of prophecy, and
- 17:20Speaker 1: the power of God working miracles in them. Yea, I
- 17:23Speaker 1: say unto you, as the Lord liveth as many of
- 17:26Speaker 1: the Lamanites, as believed in their preaching and were converted
- 17:29Speaker 1: unto the Lord, never did fall away, for they became
- 17:33Speaker 1: a righteous people. They did lay down the weapons of
- 17:37Speaker 1: their rebellion, that they did not fight against God any more,
- 17:40Speaker 1: neither against any of their brethren. Now these are they
- 17:43Speaker 1: who were converted unto the Lord, the people of the
- 17:46Speaker 1: Lamanites who were in the land of Ishmael, and also
- 17:49Speaker 1: of the people of the Lamanites who were in the
- 17:51Speaker 1: land of Medonai. And also of the people of the
- 17:54Speaker 1: Lamanites who were in the city of Nephi. And also
- 17:58Speaker 1: of the people of the Lamanites who were in the
- 17:59Speaker 1: Lafe of Shylom, and who were in the land of Shemlon,
- 18:03Speaker 1: and in the city of Lemuel, and in the city
- 18:06Speaker 1: of Shymnalum. And these are the names of the cities
- 18:09Speaker 1: of the Lamanites which were converted unto the Lord. And
- 18:13Speaker 1: these are they that laid down the weapons of their
- 18:15Speaker 1: rebellion Yea, all their weapons of war. And they were
- 18:19Speaker 1: all Lamanites. And the Amalekites were not converted save only one.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Neither were any of the Ambulenites. But they did harden
- 18:27Speaker 1: their hearts, and also the hearts of the Lamanites in
- 18:30Speaker 1: that part of the land, wheresoever they dwelt Yea, and
- 18:33Speaker 1: all their villages and all their cities. Therefore we have
- 18:37Speaker 1: named all the cities of the Lamanites in which they
- 18:40Speaker 1: did repent and come to the knowledge of the truth
- 18:42Speaker 1: and were converted. And now it came to pass that
- 18:45Speaker 1: the king and those who were converted were desirous that
- 18:48Speaker 1: they might have a name, that thereby they might be
- 18:51Speaker 1: distinguished from their brethren. Therefore the king consulted with Erin
- 18:55Speaker 1: and many of their priests concerning the name that they
- 18:58Speaker 1: should take upon them, that they might be distursuished. And
- 19:01Speaker 1: it came to pass that they called their names antinyphi Lehis,
- 19:06Speaker 1: and they were called by this name, and were no
- 19:08Speaker 1: more called Lamanites. And they began to be a very
- 19:12Speaker 1: industrious people Yea. And they were friendly with the Nephites.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Therefore they did open a correspondence with them, and the
- 19:19Speaker 1: curse of God did no more follow them Elmen chapter
- 19:26Speaker 1: twenty four. And it came to pass that the Amalekites
- 19:29Speaker 1: and the Amulnites, and the Lamanites, who were in the
- 19:32Speaker 1: land of Amulon, and also in the land of Helim,
- 19:35Speaker 1: and who were in the land of Jerusalem, and in
- 19:37Speaker 1: Fine in all the land round about, who had not
- 19:40Speaker 1: been converted and had not taken upon them the name
- 19:43Speaker 1: of antainyphi Lehi, were stirred up by the Amalekites and
- 19:47Speaker 1: by the Amulnites to anger against their brethren, and their
- 19:51Speaker 1: hatred became exceedingly sore against them, even in so much
- 19:54Speaker 1: that they began to rebel against their king, insomuch that
- 19:58Speaker 1: they would not that he should be the king. Therefore
- 20:01Speaker 1: they took up arms against the people of antony phi Lehi.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Now the king conferred the kingdom upon his son, and
- 20:08Speaker 1: he called his name antonyphi Lehi. And the king died
- 20:12Speaker 1: in that self same year that the Lamanites began to
- 20:15Speaker 1: make preparations for war against the people of God. Now,
- 20:18Speaker 1: when Ammon and his brethren and all those who had
- 20:21Speaker 1: come up with him, saw the preparations of the Lamanites
- 20:24Speaker 1: to destroy their brethren. They came forth to the land
- 20:27Speaker 1: of Midian, and there Amon met all his brethren, and
- 20:31Speaker 1: from thence they came to the land of Ishmael, that
- 20:34Speaker 1: they might hold a council with Lamona and also with
- 20:36Speaker 1: his brother antony phi Lehi, what they should do to
- 20:39Speaker 1: defend themselves against the Lamanites. Now there was not one
- 20:43Speaker 1: soul among all the people who had been converted unto
- 20:46Speaker 1: the Lord, that would take up arms against their brethren. Nay,
- 20:50Speaker 1: they would not even make any preparations for war. Yea.
- 20:53Speaker 1: And also their king commanded them that they should not.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Now these are the words which he said unto the
- 20:59Speaker 1: people concerning the matter. I thank my God, my beloved people,
- 21:04Speaker 1: that our great God has in goodness sent these our brethren,
- 21:07Speaker 1: the Nephites, unto us, to preach unto us, and to
- 21:10Speaker 1: convince us of the traditions of our wicked fathers. And behold,
- 21:14Speaker 1: I thank my great God that he has given us
- 21:16Speaker 1: a portion of his spirit to soften our hearts. That
- 21:19Speaker 1: we have opened a correspondence with these brethren, the Nephites.
- 21:23Speaker 1: And behold, I also thank my God that by opening
- 21:26Speaker 1: this correspondence we have been convinced of our sins and
- 21:29Speaker 1: of the many murders which we have committed. And I
- 21:32Speaker 1: also thank my God, yea, my great God, that he
- 21:35Speaker 1: hath granted unto us that we might repent of these things.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And also that He hath forgiven us of those our
- 21:42Speaker 1: many sins and murders which we have committed, and taken
- 21:45Speaker 1: away the guilt from our hearts through the merits of
- 21:47Speaker 1: His son. And now behold, my brethren, since it has
- 21:51Speaker 1: been all that we could do, as we were the
- 21:53Speaker 1: most lost of all mankind, to repent of all our
- 21:56Speaker 1: sins and the many murders which we have committed, and
- 22:00Speaker 1: to get God to take them away from our hearts.
- 22:03Speaker 1: For it was all we could do to repent sufficiently
- 22:06Speaker 1: before God that He would take away our stain. Now,
- 22:10Speaker 1: my best beloved brethren, since God hath taken away our
- 22:14Speaker 1: stains and our swords have become bright, then let us
- 22:17Speaker 1: stain our swords no more with the blood of our brethren. Behold,
- 22:21Speaker 1: I say unto you, nay, let us retain our swords
- 22:24Speaker 1: that they may not be stained with the blood of
- 22:26Speaker 1: our brethren. For perhaps if we should stain our swords again,
- 22:29Speaker 1: they can no more be washed bright through the blood
- 22:32Speaker 1: of the son of our Great God, which shall be
- 22:34Speaker 1: shed for the atonement of our sins. And the Great
- 22:38Speaker 1: God has had mercy on us and made these things
- 22:41Speaker 1: known unto us, that we might not perish. Yea, And
- 22:44Speaker 1: he has made these things known unto us beforehand, because
- 22:47Speaker 1: he loveth our souls as well as he loveth our children. Therefore,
- 22:53Speaker 1: in his mercy he doth visit us by his angels,
- 22:56Speaker 1: that the plan of salvation might be made known unto
- 22:58Speaker 1: us as well as unto future gener Oh, how merciful
- 23:02Speaker 1: is our God. And now behold, since it has been
- 23:05Speaker 1: as much as we could do to get our stains
- 23:08Speaker 1: taken away from us, and our swords are made bright,
- 23:11Speaker 1: let us hide them away that they may be kept
- 23:14Speaker 1: bright as a testimony to our God the last day,
- 23:18Speaker 1: or at the day that we shall be brought to
- 23:20Speaker 1: stand before Him to be judged, that we have not
- 23:24Speaker 1: stained our swords in the blood of our brethren, since
- 23:26Speaker 1: He imparted his word unto us and has made us
- 23:29Speaker 1: clean thereby. And now, my brethren, if our brethren seek
- 23:34Speaker 1: to destroy us, behold, we will hide away our swords. Yea,
- 23:37Speaker 1: even we will bury them deep in the earth, that
- 23:40Speaker 1: they may be kept bright, as a testimony that we
- 23:42Speaker 1: have never used them at the last day. And if
- 23:46Speaker 1: our brethren destroy us, behold, we shall go to our
- 23:49Speaker 1: God and shall be saved. And now it came to
- 23:52Speaker 1: pass that when the King had made an end of
- 23:54Speaker 1: these sayings, and all the people were assembled together, they
- 23:57Speaker 1: took their swords and all the weapons which were used
- 24:00Speaker 1: for the shedding of man's blood, and they did bury
- 24:03Speaker 1: them up deep in the earth. And this they did,
- 24:06Speaker 1: at being in their view a testimony to God and
- 24:09Speaker 1: also to men, that they never would use weapons again
- 24:11Speaker 1: for the shedding of man's blood. And this they did,
- 24:14Speaker 1: vouching and covenanting with God, that rather than shed the
- 24:18Speaker 1: blood of their brethren, they would give up their own lives,
- 24:22Speaker 1: and rather than take away from a brother, they would
- 24:25Speaker 1: give unto him. And rather than spend their days in idleness,
- 24:29Speaker 1: they would labor abundantly with their hands. And thus we
- 24:32Speaker 1: see that when these Lamanites were brought to believe and
- 24:35Speaker 1: to know the truth, they were firm and would suffer
- 24:39Speaker 1: even unto death rather than commit sin. And thus we
- 24:42Speaker 1: see that they buried their weapons of peace, or they
- 24:46Speaker 1: buried the weapons of war for peace. And it came
- 24:50Speaker 1: to pass that their brethren, the Lamanites, made preparations for
- 24:53Speaker 1: war and came up to the land of Nephi for
- 24:56Speaker 1: the purpose of destroying the king and to place another
- 24:59Speaker 1: in his stead, and also of destroying the people of
- 25:02Speaker 1: antonify Lehi out of the land. Now, when the people
- 25:06Speaker 1: saw that they were coming against them, they went out
- 25:08Speaker 1: to meet them and prostrated themselves before them to the earth,
- 25:12Speaker 1: and began to call on the name of the Lord.
- 25:15Speaker 1: And thus they were in this attitude when the Lamanites
- 25:18Speaker 1: began to fall upon them and began to slay them
- 25:21Speaker 1: with the sword. And thus, without meeting any resistance, they
- 25:25Speaker 1: did slay a thousand and five of them. And we
- 25:28Speaker 1: know that they are blessed, for they have gone to
- 25:30Speaker 1: dwell with their God. Now, when the Lamanites saw that
- 25:34Speaker 1: their brethren would not flee from the sword, neither would
- 25:36Speaker 1: they turn aside to the right hand nor to the left,
- 25:40Speaker 1: but that they would lie down and perish, and praised
- 25:43Speaker 1: God even in the very act of perishing under the sword. Now,
- 25:47Speaker 1: when the Lamanites saw this, they did forbear from slaying them.
- 25:51Speaker 1: And there were many whose hearts had swollen in them
- 25:53Speaker 1: for those of their brethren who had fallen under the sword,
- 25:57Speaker 1: For they repented of the things which they had done.
- 26:00Speaker 1: And it came to pass that they threw down their
- 26:02Speaker 1: weapons of war, and they would not take them again,
- 26:06Speaker 1: for they were stung for the murders which they had committed.
- 26:09Speaker 1: And they came down even as their brethren, relying upon
- 26:13Speaker 1: the mercies of those whose arms were lifted to slay them.
- 26:16Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the people of God
- 26:18Speaker 1: were joined that day by more than the number who
- 26:21Speaker 1: had been slain. And those who had been slain were
- 26:24Speaker 1: righteous people. Therefore we have no reason to doubt but
- 26:27Speaker 1: what they were saved, And there was not a wicked
- 26:31Speaker 1: man slain among them, But there were more than a
- 26:34Speaker 1: thousand brought to the knowledge of the truth. Thus we
- 26:37Speaker 1: see that the Lord worketh in many ways to the
- 26:40Speaker 1: salvation of his people. Now, the greatest number of those
- 26:44Speaker 1: of the Lamanites who slew so many of their brethren
- 26:46Speaker 1: were Amalekites and Amulenites, the greatest number of whom were
- 26:50Speaker 1: after the order of the Nihors. Now among those who
- 26:53Speaker 1: joined the people of the Lord, there were none who
- 26:56Speaker 1: were Amalekites or Amulenites, or who were of the order
- 26:59Speaker 1: of New but they were actual descendants of Layman and Lemuel.
- 27:04Speaker 1: And thus we complainly discern that after a people have
- 27:07Speaker 1: been once enlightened by the spirit of God and have
- 27:10Speaker 1: had great knowledge of things pertaining to righteousness, and then
- 27:13Speaker 1: have fallen away into sin and transgression, they become more hardened,
- 27:19Speaker 1: and thus their state becomes worse than though they had
- 27:22Speaker 1: never known these things. And of Alma chapters twenty one
