- 0:01First Corinthians Chapter 7 Let us pray.
- 0:08Our Father who is in heaven, holy is your name, your Kingdom
- 0:24come, your will be done on earth just as it is in heaven.
- 0:41Give us this day Our Daily Bread.
- 0:49Forgive us of our trespasses as we forgive those who have
- 1:01trespassed against us. Lead us not in temptation, but
- 1:15deliver us from the evil. 1 For yours it's the Kingdom, for
- 1:28yours is the power, for yours is the glory forever.
- 1:39Amen. Well, let's start in verse one.
- 1:45Now, concerning the things, wherever you wrote unto me, it
- 1:50is good for a man not to touch a woman.
- 1:54OK, Paul, Paul's going to talk about a letter he received from
- 2:00the Corinthians. They were wanting to know if it
- 2:03was more pious for them to put away their wives or to have
- 2:09celibacy and to not touch women. And what you need to understand
- 2:15here is that Paul is going to take them to task.
- 2:19He's going to show them their futile efforts to try to please
- 2:22God, and what he is going to expound upon them is that
- 2:28whatever situation they were called in, to remain in that to
- 2:36be content. And that is the whole crux of
- 2:39the whole situation, friends, is to be content.
- 2:42Many of us were just not content and we think that the grass is
- 2:47greener on the other side and we're constantly pursuing A
- 2:51loftier idea or we're constantly trying to please God and we need
- 2:56to rest in the finished work of the cross.
- 3:00And we need to know that we don't have to manufacture a
- 3:03single thing that if we'll rest in the promises of God that by
- 3:07and by he's going to lead us home.
- 3:09And we don't need to fear on missing out on anything.
- 3:12Or we do not need to fear being the ones who stand before God
- 3:15one day saying that we prophesied in your name.
- 3:19We cast out demons in your name. And we do not need to fear him
- 3:25saying depart from me. If we will just rest in the
- 3:29finished work of the cross, If we will make sure that we know
- 3:33that we know that we're covered in the blood of Jesus Christ,
- 3:36then no matter if you're a garbage collector, a janitor, or
- 3:40if you are a rocket scientist, brain surgeon, you can please
- 3:49God no matter what situation you find yourself in.
- 3:54And if you are living in a sinful lifestyle, if you are
- 3:57living in complete reprobate situation, you must flee from
- 4:03that. You must get out of that.
- 4:05And Paul is going to show us throughout this chapter how God
- 4:09feels about it all. And this is not just Paul's
- 4:14opinion. This is divinely inspired.
- 4:17Friends, this entire chapter here, the entire word of God is
- 4:22infallible in an errand, and Paul is hijacked by the Holy
- 4:25Spirit and he's going to show us what God thinks about it all.
- 4:30Verse 2. Nevertheless, to avoid
- 4:34fornication, let every man have his own wife and let every woman
- 4:39have her own husband. So there.
- 4:42That is why we do not practice polygamy.
- 4:44That is why we are not like the patriarchs of old who took
- 4:48concubines and wives. This is God's perfect and
- 4:52pleasing plan for us as Christians, friends.
- 4:56This monogamous relationship is what pleases God more than
- 5:00anything else is that whenever we will get in a relationship
- 5:06with the opposite sex, this is not same sex marriage, friends.
- 5:12It is one woman and it is one man, and that is God's plan and
- 5:17we make no apologies for it. And it is for the procreation
- 5:21and it is for the enjoyment. And God makes the marriage bed,
- 5:26holy friends. And He is the only one that can
- 5:29institute marriage and He is the only one that can actually sever
- 5:33the marriage relationship. Court systems do not get that
- 5:37right. Unrighteous judges do not have
- 5:40that privilege. It is God's holy matrimony.
- 5:45It is a holy institution that God put together in the
- 5:49beginning. Friends, go and read Genesis and
- 5:53you will find that God is the one who started marriage and God
- 5:57is the only one that can recognize marriage and God is
- 6:00the only one that can dissolve marriage.
- 6:03Pagan courts do not get that privilege. 3 Let the husband
- 6:09render unto the wife. Do benevolence and likewise also
- 6:14the wife unto the husband. So what you need to know is that
- 6:2099.9% of men do not deserve a submissive wife by and by.
- 6:30What you need to understand is that the degree that the wife
- 6:34will submit to the husband is only to the degree that the
- 6:39husband is submitted to God Almighty God is the head, and if
- 6:46he will bow down low and respect God and listen to God, then she
- 6:51will bow down low and respect her husband and listen to him.
- 6:56And so many times this verse has been taken out of context and
- 7:01unrighteous, sinful men who are steeped in idolatry try to use
- 7:06the Bible. And it is no different than
- 7:09Satan. It is no different than the
- 7:11certain of twist of the serpent in the garden that twist the
- 7:16words of God for their own selfish vanity and gain.
- 7:21And far be it from us. If husbands will lock eyes with
- 7:25the Lord God and not worry about anything else, then the woman
- 7:30will have no problem submitting to him because she knows if she
- 7:35goes against him, she's going up against God.
- 7:38And if she goes up against God, it'll never end well.
- 7:42And that is not to say that the husband is God, but the husband
- 7:46needs to know that he is serving God and God alone.
- 7:49And that is how you find a submissive wife.
- 7:53And she will be well pleased to share her due benevolence with a
- 8:01man who sold out to God Almighty. 4 The wife has no
- 8:08power of her own body but the husband.
- 8:11And likewise also the husband has no power of his own body but
- 8:15the wife. What studies show us that is if,
- 8:19if people who are not in love with each other will stay
- 8:22together, they will eventually fall back in love.
- 8:26And what you need to understand is even whenever you don't feel
- 8:30like it, God says that there is a great danger in withholding
- 8:41sex from your marriage partner, from your wife, or from your
- 8:47husband. You need to know that the
- 8:50devil's playground is fornication and he temps with so
- 8:58many different avenues coming at us and bombarding us in images.
- 9:04And you will see men act like animals and you will see women
- 9:10stepping out whenever there is not a healthy sexual
- 9:16relationship within the marriage. 5 defraud you, not one
- 9:23the other, except it be with consent for a time, that you may
- 9:29give yourselves to fasting and prayer and come together again
- 9:33that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.
- 9:38That is what you need to understand is that when a
- 9:41husband or a wife refuses to have sexual relations with their
- 9:46spouse, it is a playground for the enemy to come in and to lure
- 9:53them away. You've seen so many marriages
- 9:56broken up because they did not have a healthy sex life.
- 10:03And that is what you need to understand is that God makes the
- 10:07marriage bed pure and holy. And it is not something that we
- 10:14compartmentalize and we check out from worship unto God.
- 10:19It is something that you need to know that you are naked and laid
- 10:23bare before God's holy eyes, and if you are married and you are
- 10:27monogamous, it is pleasing unto the Father. 6 But I speak this
- 10:37by permission and not a commandment.
- 10:41So Paul is not less any divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit, but
- 10:46he is only building upon the things that Jesus Christ gave us
- 10:51in the Beatitudes when he was talking about marriages.
- 10:55And that is what you need to understand, is that here Paul is
- 11:03no less divinely inspired, but he is going to expound upon what
- 11:08Christ has said. 7 For I wish that all men were even as
- 11:15myself, but every man has this proper gift of God, one after
- 11:20this manner and another after that.
- 11:22So here you need to understand that Paul is saying that if you
- 11:27are single, then you can go and please God anywhere and
- 11:34everywhere that He calls you. But when you are married, you
- 11:38have a duty unto your family. You have a responsibility unto
- 11:44them. And we need to know that a
- 11:50person who will not take care of his family is worse than an
- 11:54unbeliever. Eight I say, therefore, to the
- 12:01unmarried and the widows, it is good for them if they abide even
- 12:04as I. He's saying, if you're single,
- 12:07stay single, because you can serve the God, You can serve God
- 12:10all the more. 9 But if they cannot contain, let them marry.
- 12:15For it is better to marry than to burn.
- 12:17If you have a desire to be married.
- 12:24He's saying, don't fight it, give in to it, because it's
- 12:28better for you to be married than for you to lust and to be
- 12:33caught in some kind of sinful relationship. 10 And unto the
- 12:40married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, let not the wife
- 12:44depart from her husband. This is what Christ had told us
- 12:47back there in the Beatitudes. 11 But if she depart, let her
- 12:51remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband, and
- 12:55let not the husband put away his wife.
- 12:59So Jesus told us that it was for the hardness of our hearts that
- 13:06Moses gave us the certificate of divorcement.
- 13:09It was not commanded as some of the religious scribes, the
- 13:14religious folk of Jesus's day were teaching, that it was
- 13:18commanded to divorce a wife if she did something wrong.
- 13:22He gave us only one out, which was for infidelity, which is if
- 13:26one spouse cheats on the other. 12 But I but to the rest speak I
- 13:33not the Lord. If any brother has a wife that
- 13:36believes not and she'd be pleased to dwell with him, let
- 13:40him not put her away. So if you find yourself already
- 13:43married and you find out that your spouse, if you come to
- 13:46faith and find out that your spouse is not a believer and
- 13:50that was not even really something you even talked about
- 13:53in the beginning and now it's of the utmost importance and you're
- 13:56wondering what to do. He's saying stay in the
- 13:59marriage, do not seek to get out of that marriage. 13 And the
- 14:03woman which has a husband that believes not, if he be pleased
- 14:08to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
- 14:11Think about it, friends, here he is.
- 14:14He doesn't care anything for the Lord, but she comes to faith or
- 14:20vice versa. He loves the Lord now and she
- 14:23cares nothing for him. Paul's going to tell us what
- 14:26does God think about it? 14 For the unbelieving husband
- 14:30is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is
- 14:34sanctified by the husband. Else were your children unclean?
- 14:38But now are they holy? So this is of great importance,
- 14:43friends, that if you will stay in the marriage, then there is a
- 14:49chance that your husband will come to faith.
- 14:53Your wife will come to faith if you'll stay in it.
- 14:57And unless there is grave danger and there's violence, and unless
- 15:04there is strife, you don't need to separate from them.
- 15:09But even if you find yourself in a very dangerous situation, you
- 15:14do not need to seek divorce. You need to seek help and seek
- 15:18separation and you need to try and seek reconciliation,
- 15:22friends, and here you're going to find what God thinks about it
- 15:27and look at what he says about these children.
- 15:30This is of the utmost importance.
- 15:33Friends, think about if you were to leave your unbelieving spouse
- 15:38and they somehow got custody of your children, they could lead
- 15:43them down into paths of destruction.
- 15:46But if you choose to stay in that marriage, there is a chance
- 15:51that they will grow up and grow in to the Lord and be holy.
- 15:56And you can train them in the way they should go so that when
- 15:59they are older they will not depart from it.
- 16:03And we know that God says that he does not wish that any should
- 16:12perish. 15 But if the unbelieving depart, let him
- 16:22depart. A brother or sister is not under
- 16:25bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace.
- 16:30So here, if they want to, if the unbeliever wants to leave, then
- 16:37you are free from them. Think about it, if you find
- 16:40yourself in a house, in a marriage and the unbeliever says
- 16:45I can't take it, I'm leaving. He says let them go, you are no
- 16:50longer bound to them. He wants you to live at peace as
- 16:57much as possible in this life, and that peace comes from him.
- 17:0416 For what do you know, O wife, whether you shall save your
- 17:08husband? Or what do you know, man,
- 17:10whether you shall save your wife?
- 17:12We don't save anybody, friends. God does, but it is our witness.
- 17:18And who knows? This is God's heart right here.
- 17:21Who knows that IF by you fasting and praying, and by your
- 17:29witness, by you going to church and being the church, reading
- 17:33your word, who knows if that will not be contagious unto your
- 17:38spouse? And that is the reason he wants
- 17:40us to stay in the fight for friends. 17 But as God has
- 17:46distributed to every man, as the Lord has called everyone, so let
- 17:51him walk, and so ordain I and all the churches.
- 17:56So whatever situation you found yourself in when you were
- 17:59called, God says stay in that situation.
- 18:03If you are married, stay married.
- 18:06If you're single, stay single. Unless you burn with lust, then
- 18:12it is better to marry. 18 Is any man called being circumcised?
- 18:17Let him not become uncircumcised is any called in uncircumcision.
- 18:23Let him not be circumcised. 19 Circumcision is nothing.
- 18:27Uncircumcision is nothing but the keeping of the commandments
- 18:31of God. That is something, friends, is
- 18:34that's what God desires, for us to love him with all of our
- 18:38heart, all of our mind, all of our strength, to love our
- 18:41neighbor as ourselves. He's saying to us that we don't
- 18:45need to try to uphold all of the Jewish customs, friends us as
- 18:51Gentiles. And then he's also telling the
- 18:54Jews that they shouldn't seek to be uncircumcised, as some people
- 19:00did whenever Antiochus Epiphanes was on the scene and they were
- 19:04trying to hide their circumcision for fear of man.
- 19:09Far be it from us to give into that.
- 19:14We keep the commandments of God, and that is what pleases Him. 20
- 19:18Let every man abide in the same calling where he was called. 21
- 19:23Are you called being a servant? Care not for it, but if you may
- 19:28be made free, use it. Rather, he's saying just because
- 19:31you find yourself in a pitiful situation, if there is
- 19:36opportunity for you to get out of that, you should take it.
- 19:40Don't just think that. He's saying if you were called
- 19:43in poverty to stay in poverty. Friends.
- 19:47If you were called as a slave, don't stay in slavery.
- 19:52If you were called in a sinful lifestyle, don't stay in that
- 19:57sinful lifestyle. Get out of it, friends. 21 Are
- 20:03you called being a servant? 22 For he that is called in the
- 20:09Lord, being a servant is the Lord's freeman.
- 20:12Likewise also he that is called being free is Christ's servant.
- 20:17So he's saying, look at it, If you are in, if you think you
- 20:20have freedom, you're a bondservant unto Christ.
- 20:25If you think that you're a slave, he's called you a
- 20:29freeman. So he's saying, walk in Christ,
- 20:35walk in the freedom, and then you will find that you are just
- 20:39a bond servant unto him. 23 You are bought with a price.
- 20:47Be not you the servants of men. Don't worry about this sphere of
- 20:51man. He bought you with a real high
- 20:53price, friends, and now you belong to him and you live for
- 20:58Christ. 24 brothers let every man where in he is called
- 21:07therein abide with God. This is contentment friends,
- 21:11contentment in a nutshell. We need to know that whatever
- 21:15situation we find ourselves in, we need to be content in it.
- 21:19And we don't need to think that the grass is greener on the
- 21:22other side, which leads to discontentment, it leads to
- 21:25confusion, it leads to a selling our birthright for a mess of
- 21:29pottage. 25 Now concerning virgins, I have no commandment
- 21:34of the Lord, yet I give my judgment as one that has
- 21:39obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
- 21:43So this is what he's trying to say here.
- 21:45He's talking about all of the single people. 26 I suppose,
- 21:53therefore, that this is good for the present distress.
- 21:57I say that it is good for a man so to be so.
- 22:03What he's saying here is there's persecution that is coming and
- 22:08to avoid so much sorrow that if a person is single, they do not
- 22:15have to worry about trying to take care of their spouse and
- 22:22their children, and they will be free from so much distress and
- 22:26sorrow when the persecution arises. 27 Are you bound to a
- 22:32wife? Do not seek to be loosed.
- 22:35Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife.
- 22:38So he's saying whatever your situation is, stay in it. 28 But
- 22:44if you marry, though you have not sinned, and if a virgin
- 22:50marries, she is not sinned, nevertheless such shall have
- 22:54trouble in the flesh. But I spare you.
- 22:57He's trying to spare us of all the sorrow that comes.
- 23:03And we know that God's plan from the beginning was procreation.
- 23:07And he know he is desirous for us to have one woman, and to for
- 23:13us to have one spouse, a man to have a wife, a wife to have a
- 23:16husband, and for them to have children which he honors.
- 23:21And you know that many, many arrows in the hand of a man is
- 23:29pleasing unto God. We know that happy is the man
- 23:33who has a quiver full of them. These children are gifts from
- 23:37God. But Paul here is showing that
- 23:41when the persecution arises, we could save ourselves so much
- 23:46sorrow if we remain single and we'll be able to serve God
- 23:52freely. That's why he says it's not a
- 23:56sin to marry, it's not a sin to have children, but you will have
- 24:01much sorrow. He's trying to spare you of
- 24:05that. 29 But this I say, brothers, the time is short.
- 24:11It remains that both they that have wives be as though they had
- 24:15none. So he's telling us that the
- 24:20circle is closing in the birth pains and the contractions.
- 24:23The end is near, friends. And if it's not in our lifetime,
- 24:28if it's not in the next 1000 years, it's still near because
- 24:321000 years is like a day and a day is like 1000 years to God.
- 24:37Do not think that God is slack in his coming.
- 24:40He's waiting for the for the full number to come in friends.
- 24:48And he's saying that if you have a wife that you don't need to be
- 24:56so preoccupied with what does she think about things?
- 25:01You need to be more preoccupied with what does the word of God
- 25:05say? And then you share that with
- 25:10her. And if she will not accept it,
- 25:14she will be fighting against God Almighty.
- 25:17That is not a place that anybody would ever want to be.
- 25:22We listen to God, we please God, we submit ourselves to God.
- 25:29And then you will find a wife that is submissive unto you. 30
- 25:37And they that weep as though they wept not, and they that
- 25:40rejoice as though they rejoice not, and they that by as though
- 25:44they possess not. So he's saying that we do not
- 25:47mourn like the rest of the world who have no hope.
- 25:50We do not look at all of our possessions as our own
- 25:53possessions. They are gods and we are just
- 25:55stewarding them and we do not just make myrrh and think that
- 26:00life is nothing but a big party. This is serious business in
- 26:05heaven and hell. Hang in the balance for every
- 26:08single person that you meet today, friends 31 and they that
- 26:15use this world as not abusing it for the fashion of this world
- 26:20passes away. That is what you need to
- 26:22understand is that the children of this world are more shrewd in
- 26:26their dealings than the children of the light.
- 26:30And we need to be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
- 26:35Friends, everything is passing away, and it is only by sending
- 26:40things ahead that we will have any kind of rewards. 32 But I
- 26:47would have you without carefulness, he that is
- 26:51unmarried cares for the things that belong to the Lord, how he
- 26:54may please the Lord. 33 But he that is married cares for the
- 26:58things that are of this world, how he may please his wife.
- 27:02That is what you need to understand is that whenever you
- 27:05are not married and God says go, you go.
- 27:09But whenever you are married, there's much deliberation, and
- 27:15you must go and reason with your spouse and with your children,
- 27:20and you must wrestle through all of those hard decisions. 34
- 27:26There is difference also between a wife and a virgin.
- 27:30The unmarried woman cares for the things of the Lord, that she
- 27:35may be holy both in body and in spirit, but she that is married
- 27:39carry cares for the things of the world, how she may please
- 27:44her husband. What he's saying is that an
- 27:47unmarried woman is free to do whatever God Almighty tells her
- 27:52to do, but a married woman has to submit herself unto her
- 27:56husband, and she has to worry about taking care and being a
- 28:00good helper unto him. 35 And this I speak for your own
- 28:07prophet, not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that
- 28:12which is comely, and that you may attend upon the Lord without
- 28:16distraction. We've got to live lives that are
- 28:18not distracted friends. And what he is saying he's is,
- 28:23he's not trying to put a noose around your neck.
- 28:27He's trying to get you to a place where you are free and
- 28:32free indeed. Who the Son sets free is free
- 28:35indeed. And that is what you're going to
- 28:37find is that Paul is desirous for us to live unto God and God
- 28:43alone. But he knows that it is
- 28:47beneficial to be married, and he doesn't say anything against
- 28:51marriage as a whole, but his desire is for us to be 100% sold
- 28:58out to God Almighty. That is the entire point of this
- 29:03entire chapter. It is for our profit that we are
- 29:10not distracted. 36 But if any man think that he behaves
- 29:14himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she passed the flower
- 29:19of her age and needs so require, let him do what he will.
- 29:23He sends not let them marry. So if you have a daughter and
- 29:28you're trying to hold on to her because you are fearful of what
- 29:32is all coming down the pipeline and you think that it is better
- 29:36for her to stay under your roof and for you to take care of her.
- 29:39But here she is. She is now of age, she has come
- 29:44into her maturity and things are still going on and on, and the
- 29:54Lord has not come back yet and he's still tearing.
- 29:59And there is a suitor who desires A betrothal unto your
- 30:08daughter. He's saying release her and let
- 30:10her go to be married. Quit trying to hold on to her.
- 30:14She's not your possession. She was God's before she was
- 30:17ever yours. Let them marry. 37 Nevertheless,
- 30:24he that stands steadfast in his heart, having no necessity, but
- 30:30has power over his own will, and has so decreed in his heart that
- 30:39he will keep his virgin, does well.
- 30:43So he's saying that we should not push them out if they are in
- 30:48a position where they want to stay.
- 30:51We don't need to try to push them out into the world and into
- 30:56unhealthy relationships. If your daughter desires to
- 31:02stay, does not desire to be married, then it is wonderful
- 31:08for the father to continue to take care of her.
- 31:12This explains why a man leaves his mother and father and
- 31:17cleaves to his wife, and the two become one.
- 31:21But it does not say that about the daughter. 38 So then he that
- 31:26gives her in marriage does well, but he that gives her not in
- 31:31marriage does better, because she can stay underneath your
- 31:35roof, and only you know where you stand with the Lord, And you
- 31:40really can't tell where her future spouse stands with the
- 31:44Lord. He can say it outwardly, but you
- 31:46do not know what is happening in his own heart.
- 31:49And there's so many youthful, lustful desires that come up and
- 31:54spring up after someone gets married that has to get dealt
- 31:58with and has to get completely rooted out and the
- 32:03sanctification process. But you as the Father, you've
- 32:07dealt with so much and you can see the world differently than
- 32:11the youthful can. And so he's saying it's better
- 32:16as we are nearing the end, it's better for her to stay
- 32:19underneath your leadership and direction. 39 The wife is bound
- 32:26by the law as long as her husband lives.
- 32:29But if her husband is dead, she's at liberty to be married
- 32:32to whom she will only in the Lord.
- 32:35We cannot be unequally yoked, friends, whether it's in
- 32:38business, whether it's in marriage, do not be unequally
- 32:42yoked. If a husband dies, she's free to
- 32:46remarry, but only a believer. We'll end on 40.
- 32:51But she's happier if she so abides after my judgment.
- 32:56And I think also that I have the Spirit of God.
- 33:00Paul is so humble, and here he's not trying to act like he's some
- 33:07kind of super St. He's being very modest.
- 33:11But it is no less inspired of God, and he's hijacked by the
- 33:15Holy Spirit. And God is giving us his mind on
- 33:18all these matters. And aren't we eternally blessed
- 33:21and grateful for this chapter that lays out so many principles
- 33:25of relationships and marriage and how we are to be?
- 33:30And he says that when the Son of Man returns, people will be
- 33:36doing all the things that they've always done.
- 33:38They'll be giving their daughters away in marriage.
- 33:43We need to know that He's coming soon.
- 33:49If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready, friends.
- 33:52We look up and we see our redemption is drawing near and
- 33:57He is going to keep us from the hour that is coming to test all
- 34:03the inhabitants of the earth. Just remember that.
- 34:08I hope you've been blessed by this chapter.
- 34:11I know I sure have. I love you.
- 34:14I'm praying for you. We'll see you back here
- 34:16tomorrow. God bless you.
